Acimall, the Italian woodworking machinery and tools manufacturers association, has appointed Dario Corbetta as their new director. Dario joined Acimall in 1991 and as manager of promotion activities for Italian woodworking technology around the world, he directed the association’s Studies office. Since 2010 he has been serving as marketing manager of Xylexpo, the biennial international exhibition, and last year he became deputy director. He succeeds Paolo Zanibon who served as general manager of the association since 1978. Dario highlighted his two major tasks: the next Xylexpo, organised by the association next May, and the promotion of Made in Italy technology, a priority for the association where Xylexpo is of paramount importance.

business news Cefla will be exhibiting back at Xylexpo, the Milan-based exhibition in May this year. According to Alberto Maestri, Sales and Marketing Director, Cefla Finishing Group, “we believe we will find an international stage to present the results of our continuous efforts in innovation and product development, supported with significant investments in the past year”. It is good news for Xylexpo as well, providing a new opportunity to reaffirm the role of the exhibition as a showcase of Italian excellence. New Acimall director Dario Corbetta said that showed that the Italian industry was re-uniting under common intents, and working together for mutual satisfaction by focusing all resources and efforts on global competition.

The production facility in Rosate, Italy, was initially a décor paper printing plant for Schattdecor. Now, alongwith the décor printing presses and three existing impregnation lines, it will gain a fourth impregnation line in mid-2014 to expand the production of Postfoil. There have been personnel changes at Rosate too. Dieter Hüttlinger (right) has moved from his position as Managing Director and is now Chief Financial Executive at Schattdecor AG, Germany. Dieter has been Managing Director at Rosate since 2009 after becoming Commercial Manager there nine years earlier. His successor, Marco Aquino, brings his longstanding technical expertise and product knowledge to the role of Managing Director. Technical Manager, Marco’s former position, goes to Omar Paridi, formerly Production and Impregnation Manager. Joining them from a Schattdecor plant in Russia will be Dieter Schuckmann as Commercial Manager. The new management team at Schattdecor Italia hope to see further development along successful lines whilst remaining a dependable partner for its customers.

After 12 months of preparation and auditing, IDS has been awarded ISO 14001 for Environmental Management Systems (EMS). The certificate shows that the surface materials distributor is compliant with all current environmental legislation and takes its environmental responsibilities seriously - which includes having processes in place to reduce and monitor energy consumption and waste disposal costs. Paul Hyam, Business Controls Manager at IDS, said that although gaining ISO 14001 has meant a lot of hard work and investment across all 12 branches, the company would benefit now that it could add the world’s leading certificate for environmental management to the fact that over 80% of the company’s products are environmentally certified. The auditing and award of the certificate was by BM Trada, a leading multi-sector certification body accredited by UKAS.

A three-day event will take place at Ney’s headquarters in Coventry from 10 to 12 April 2014, featuring a wide range of woodworking machinery and components as part of the Spring In-house exhibition. Demonstrations of the latest machines from Ney’s established principals EBM, Harwi, Paoloni, GG Machine, Fravol, and Virutex, as well as entry-level CNC machines from new partners Cosmec and Alberti, will be available each day from 8.30am. Components will include storage solutions from Samet, Vibo, Atim and Laguna in a special kitchen and bedroom display built to showcase Ney’s own door collection. Information and advice will be available from technical salesmen and specialist engineers on the complete range of machinery and components and refreshments will be provided. For more information, or to reserve a space, call 024 7630 8100 or visit www.ney.co.uk/exhibitions and fill in a reservation form.

Valentino Villa, chief executive of CML Engineering, recently visited Daltons Wadkin’s headquarters in Nottingham to reach a new distributor agreement. Shown left shaking hands with Francis Dalton, Valentino has agreed that Daltons Wadkin now has exclusive rights to supply the entire range from his Italian Multi Rip Saw manufacturing company throughout UK and Ireland. A CML J350R Multi Rip with moveable saws will be the first machine to be dispatched from Italy, and it will be appearing at a Daltons Wadkin open day period, starting 29 April, with other machinery for the solid timber sector. The extensive CML Multi Rip Saw range features many and varied specifications from the basic J250 for the smaller workshop to moving blade machines and, at the top end of the scale, double spindle edgers with capacities up to 1200mm board width and 250mm depth of cut. Francis Dalton was delighted to have secured the deal and said that the machines fitted well into the product portfolio. “We look forward to showing them off during the forthcoming open days and at W14 later in the year.”

CHANGING STAFF At the end of January 2014, Schattdecor AG and Bernd Reuss parted with a mutual amicable agreement. Bernd had been Head of Corporate Communications at the Germany-based décor paper printer since May 2001, and will continue in consultation with the company to complete a number of projects until March 2014. There have been no reasons given for his departure and, at this time, a decision regarding his successor has not yet been reached.

Two new faces have been added to the Sales Team at East Coast Fittings Ltd (ECF): • David Starling (above left) is the Territory Sales Manager for the West, South and East Yorkshire counties. David brings a wealth of customer knowledge from his previous employments at Crestwood UK and Uber Doors, which will help ECF build positively on their reputation as a quality manufacturer and distributor to the trade. • Karl Donaghey (above right) will support ECF’s newly launched Greyhouse bathroom furniture range as Northern Regional Sales Manager. He has owned his own business in the KBB sector for the last 12 years and also brings plumbing and heating knowledge from his early career at Plumb Center.

W14 is the latest edition in an unbroken run of 40 years of knowledge-packed events for the UK joinery and furniture industries.

forty y T Exhibitions like W14 let customers meet exhibitors face to face (and vice versa), see products up close and spot new exciting developments. It allows both to share knowledge - and so delivers power to all involved.

he phrase ‘knowledge is power’ is most likely attributable to Sir Francis Bacon, who lived over 400 years ago, but in business today we might equally claim that knowledge is profit. Furniture and joinery manufacturers of all sizes will be fully aware that knowledge in their industry is changing at a faster rate than ever before, and that the competition for it is global. New product development constantly impacts on costs and capabilities with potential extinction for those left behind. Emerging micro manufacturers find that sophisticated technologies are now priced within their reach as the digital revolution reaches out to every manufacturing operation no longer competing purely on low cost. That means most UK manufacturers. So, if knowledge is essential, fast changing and far reaching, where is it to be found in the UK? First stop is often by tapping into an internet search engine. This is fine if you know the right question to ask and the question of trust in the source of the answer arises – because meaningful conversations on the web can be hard to come by. Trade exhibitions score heavily over cyberspace here. Most people enjoy and gain most from face to face conversations. For furniture and joinery manufacturers the W14 exhibition has huge value in that respect. Its 40-year heritage is so well trusted no-one stops to think about it. Of course, manufacturers could visit ten or twenty suppliers of a product in which they are interested. Or have them come along to the

y years of expert advice office with brochures and tablet computer in hand. Consider the time and resource that would take - and that’s just for one product. At W14 we all know that the key suppliers will be under one roof, within a short stroll of each other at the NEC. The job can be completed quickly before you pop off for a sandwich and coffee! Every 2 years, the exhibition halls are packed with industry professionals working for exhibitors at a W exhibition. They are going to be at the exhibition because they are considered to have knowledge which will be valuable to visiting manufacturers. They are skilled in demonstrating their products, explaining the benefits and applying all of this to the specific needs of the visitor. This is a personal tailored consultancy service which is simply unique. We should also remember that the suppliers choosing to exhibit every two years at the industry’s national exhibition are implicitly confident that the value of their product will stand comparison with their competitors in the halls. There is no greater expression of belief in your product than demonstrating it face to face alongside the competition. For this reason alone, the exhibition has an absolutely invaluable function for manufacturers.

Manufacturers can usually only make enquiries about products they know exist. At an exhibition it’s different. A wander around the halls allows visitors to see innovation, development and new methods they might otherwise not see until they find a competitor using them. In the unforgiving business climate of today that might just be too late. Of course exhibitors at the NEC are acquiring knowledge as well. They meet new customers who were previously unknown to them. They find out what existing customers are thinking of doing. They discover what the market thinks of them. And most report crucial new business relationships being formed at the show. The exhibition for the furniture and joinery industry always has been a down to earth event, essential to both suppliers and manufacturers in understanding and steering the market. Since the knowledge revolution changed UK manufacturing for good they are a unique partner to other media in delivering knowledge face to face. And knowledge is even more inclined to deliver power nowadays than it was over 400 years ago. www.w14exhibition.com

6 • FURNITURE JOURNAL MARCH 2014 Left. Have you ever heard of guerrilla knitting? No? It was new to me, too, but, apparently, the craze to knit bicycles to railings and cover tree trunks with brightly coloured knitting has really taken off - and its influence has spread to the handles of Union Knopf. On the stand were knitted, denim, even zippered handles alongside even more industrial additions to the Raw Collection. Call 0049 5205 12175. Below. Laguna launched four new profiles for sliding doors. Shown are Epsilon and Lambda. For more details talk to Ney on 024 7630 8100.

After what felt like a rather flat show, will ZOW be able to continue as an annual event without major changes?

review I

n a non-Interzum year, ZOW has traditionally buzzed with new décors. This year, with the exception of Hornschuch, LG, Interprint and a few Far Eastern manufacturers, the halls were largely empty of décor specialists as many of the main players voted with their feet to slow the pace of change in a sector that has become as fast moving as fashion and fabric. And they were not alone. Many of the big boys in hardware had also deserted ZOW 2014, leaving Titus and Samet virtually alone in the spotlight. On the Monday, the aisles were quieter than any ZOW we’ve ever attended and even on the second day when things seemed to pick up, there was nothing of the vibrancy and enthusiasm of previous events. The organisers, Clarion Events Germany, proclaimed they had extended their contracts with the Bad Salzuflen Exhibition Centre to 2018, stating boldly, “The industry can be assured that ZOW will remain its annual early season platform.” Seeking to reassure an unmistakably twitchy industry, the organisers added, “In 2015 we’ll be putting a very clear spotlight on the trend for individualised mass production.” I sincerely hope they have made the right decision. Exhibitors from various sectors seemed to be speculating on whether ZOW could survive in its present form. Several seemed to believe a two-yearly event, maybe even repositioned midway between Interzums, might serve the needs of the industry better.

For ZOW, the surface specialists Hornschuch chose Thinking Outside the Box as its motto: “This means design without restrictions on free thought, unusual creations for which the designers thought unconventionally and saw the bigger picture,” explained Axel Schmidt from the stand. The result was shown as a piece of designer furniture (above), an eyecatcher by interior decorator Imme Vogel which symbolises openness and the pursuit of new topics. Several new décor foils made their debuts on the ZOW stand, among them two striking alternatives to oak. Developed in decor association with Schattdekor, skai® Missouri Walnut (under this caption) opens a new chapter with rustic elegance in the form of large flowers, fine, sharp walnut pores and wind cracks. The fine details are emphasised by Noce embossing. In addition to typical walnut tones, the colour range also includes the trendy light gray area. skai® Missouri Walnut is a wood design that will own the future. Details from Hornschuch: 0049 7947 810 or visit www.hornschuch.de

Whilst it is hard to deliver trend news without a consensus, the search for a new alternative to oak in the décor sector, clearly signalled at Interzum 2013, has resulted in a number of new elm and walnut décors coming to market. The ultra-rustic, saw-marked effects we saw rise spectacularly a while ago have been calmed down in severity over the last year or so, although emphasis is still on high quality print with ever better embossings. With little new to shout about in the decorative hardware sector at this year’s ZOW, Union Knopf stood out again for its originality in handle design. Union Knopf’s roots in the world of apparel and high fashion have taken it into the hitherto unexplored world of guerrilla knitting. Sometimes referred to as Kniffiti or Yarn Storming, this craze apparently often results in bicycles being knitted to railings in capital cities around Europe while the owners are not looking. I joke not. Take a look at the handles on the left page: knitted covers, denim covers, zippered covers and more have been added to Union Knopf’s Raw Level collection, which also now includes even more industrial-looking handles with rough-welded joints. If your furniture offer includes a Panzer range, these could be ideal. In summary, this year’s ZOW was a bit of a let-down. From the start it felt flat and genuinely new product was hard to find. One can only hope it will not lose its product focus in order to continue as an annual event.

Also from Hornschuch, the new design skai® Sangallo Elm (beneath this caption) provides a delicate reinterpretation of the traditional elm, which Hornschuch presents in co-operation with Süddekor and Kaindl. Harmonious interplay of late wood pores, fine light areas and rings characterise this new design. Its knot-free structure looks both powerful and timeless and the Arco embossing enhances the design with a fine shimmer. Available in six fresh colours. the jowat edge Jowat launches two new adhesives for edgebanding - a PUR with high initial strength and a PO for invisible bonding with lasers.

T

he Detmold-based adhesives specialist, Jowat, chose ZOW 2014 to present the very latest addition to its family of edgebanding adhesives. For a perfect bond on all standard edgebanding and panel products, there is little to beat a reactive PUR hotmelt. For large batch production, the new Jowatherm-Reaktant® 607.60 PUR hot melt provides extra process reliability. According to Jowat, the high initial strength of this adhesive permits faster and safer downline finishing operations and the product is available in either a light beige or white (607.61). Jowat’s second launch at ZOW has been formulated with smaller batch production needs in mind - and it has

been formulated to provide optimal bonding when used with the new generation of laser edgebanders. A PObased pre-coating adhesive from the Jowat-Toptherm ® series, it is ideal for use with plastic, veneer and melamine edges and can be purchased in small lots. This product is formulated with special additives that convert the laser energy into heat, activating the underside of the edgebanding for the bonding process. The result is a superfine, almost invisible but hard bond line which Jowat says has the added benefit of excellent final strength. For further details of the new products at ZOW and all other Jowat products, call 01782 565265.

Left. HotCoating and digital printing: a winning combination. Below. High gloss and genuinely seamless edging from Kleiberit’s HotCoating technology. HotCoating also works with supermatt (bottom) and tight radii.

when the heat is on Kleiberit’s HotCoating process facilitates seamless joins between the surfaces and edges of panels, even around tight radii.

S

eamless joins between surfaces and edges have become the holy grail of the panel processing sector over the last few years. For the finishing of melamine surfaces with a deep and lustrous high gloss, Kleiberit’s HotCoating technology, launched formally in May last year, provides an entirely different solution which seems to have few rivals in the market. Not only does HotCoating provide a high gloss level and increase the depth of colour, it adds the beneficial property of scratch resistance whilst making possible a continuous form which has no visible glue line between the surface and the edge. And because HotCoat offers a high degree of flexibility, finished melamine surfaces can be shaped in the direct postforming process and even the smallest edge radius is possible.

Traditional high gloss surfaces often reach their limits while being formed over the edges of panels, sometimes because of the thickness of the décor, sometimes because of the hard or crystalline nature of some surfaces which do not lend themselves to shaping without cracking. HotCoat technology includes extremely elastic properties in the HotCoat layer, overcoming the problem simply and efficiently. Additionally, through careful formulation of the adhesive, Kleiberit has ensured that the HotCoating high gloss process provides secure adhesion to the melamine simply and efficiently with comparably low coat weight. When finished, the surface offers best microscratch resistance to Steel Wool Type 0 and good shock resistance. 01530 836699, www.kleiberit.com

Raukantex Laser Edge.

N Rehau’s Rauvisio Crystal and Rauvisio Brilliant product lines offer a new dimension in furniture surface design. At ZOW, Rehau launched a new addition to its Rauvolet Metallic tambours with a 4mm track.

ew additions to Rehau’s Rauvisio product range, Rauvisio Crystal and Rauvisio Brilliant are both polymeric surfaces which offer a new dimension in furniture surface design. Rauvisio Crystal, Rehau’s ‘glass’ laminate surface, provides a perfect solution for fronts utilising the machining advantages of polymers yet still creating the visual appearance of real glass. This product stands out primarily for its high quality appearance, ease of cleaning, impact resistance and light weight properties. Rauvisio Brilliant, on the other hand, is a high gloss laminate surface which offers with real depth. Currently available in ten colours (see below), Rauvisio Brilliant offers a genuine substitute for expensive lacquered fronts. Completing the Rauvisio offer was Raukantex Laser Edge. Using laser welding and hot air technology, a permanent bond is created between the edgeband and board without the use of adhesives and without creating a joint. ZOW saw the expansion of the Rauvolet metallic-line in a co-ordinated way. Together with Michael Schmidt of code2design, Rehau launched the frame4 tambour solution for the kitchen environment. Frame4 is the new subtle track system with a width of just 4mm. The 4mm track frames the tambour door carpet in an elegant metal finish, creating a solution appealing in design and appearance. Embossing: the next chapter. The fashion for texture in the form of embossed surfaces has been taken to a new level by Giorgio Levoni. By cleverly combining embossing and digital printing, the company has been able to create a range of patterns in a quite unique way for furniture and kitchen or bathroom flooring. review D The Surface Design Show is the place to go for cutting edge ideas. We’ve picked a few of the best to bring inspiration and USPs to your furniture designs.

espite the problems the London underground threatened to create for it, the Surface Design Show provided exhibitors and visitors with a spectacle to rival much bigger events. The Design Centre provides a cosy environment for browsing but the number of stands at this year’s event with genuinely new, interesting and quite different products compelled visitors to take a closer look. And those who did could only have been delighted at some of the gems the exhibition team had uncovered. The demand for tactile décor foils has led companies like Giorgio Levoni, Xylocleaf and Kronospan Italia to push the boundaries well beyond basic synchronisation of a print with an emboss. There was real depth and realistic feel to Kronospan’s five new Synchropore woodgrain décors, while Levoni and Xylocleaf respectively showed patterns and abstract combinations of natural products.

The way surfaces play with light has become as important as the way they feel. Translucent solid surfacing materials, glass, even translucent stone that can be formed around a curved substrate, were to be found among the stands at the Surface Design Show. ZClad and Decolan both offered thin stone in resin and fibreglass-backed sheets, perfect for imaginative contract designers. In the glass sector there were even more imaginative ideas to be found. Take a look at the ultragreen, recycled glass panels made by Bottle Alley Glass (fabulous when backlit with Appletec’s Light Sheet) and the stunning glass designs of Daedalian. And if it’s nature you want to bring to a shower screen or a splash back, Objects in Glass showcased some truly stunning ideas. Surfaces have never been so exciting. And neither has the Surface Design Show!

London-based Xylocleaf is a specialist manufacturer with a range of around 600 quite different décors, 60 embosses and matching edgebandings. The décors were originally created for Italian clients and add a touch of Italian flair to imaginative furniture designs of contemporary style. Among the more unusual you will find linens embossed with woodgrain patterning and leather effects. Valis Loizides, left, says Xylocleaf is looking for smaller distributors throughout the UK. At Euroshop 2014, décor specialist Schattdecor reaffirmed its status as a market leader in digital printing, setting the pace and hinting at the future with a stand that bristled with new ideas.

E

uroshop 2014 saw the launch of Schattdecor’s second Digital Visions collection - alongside 67 new décor highlights in an attractive new booklet. Together with the 80 décors in the first collection, the new additions will enable designers, commercial interior designers and wood panel and laminate industry customers to choose from almost 150 new décor ideas specifically developed for industrial-scale digital printing. Schattdecor showed a representative selection of its digitally-printed décors on a 54m2 stand. The five themes (Pure Pleasure, No Limits, Happy Hour, Timeless Elegance and Catwalk) were presented as large format panels. The décors in the Pure Pleasure theme bring natural forms and colours together that relax and are designed for use in

fitness lounges or wellness and spa retreats. Schattdecor’s Mountains décor, shown as the backdrop to this article, was one of several examples to draw the attention of visitors to Euroshop. The vibrant décors in the No Limits theme provide an upbeat feel for young and old. Experimental designs and textures in strong and refreshing colours, such as those in the décor Chameleon, characterise this theme. An absolute contrast, Happy Hour uses sombre hues and vivid splashes of colour to create a cool, crisp feel. Experimental designs of this type are very much en vogue in bar and lounge design. Here the décor Reflection sets the tone. With Timeless Elegance, Schattdecor presented individual interpretations of

The Palace décor, for example, offers a harmonious take on a classical design. The last theme, Catwalk, offers a mix of colourful and natural motifs. The arresting and extravagant décors awaken a zest for life and a hunger for more. The Bonfim décor epitomises this positive mood. Schattdecor’s Euroshop 2014 stand owed its character to the Schattdecor Creativity Workshop in Thansau, and through modern high-tech info systems and a lounge area for relaxation, provided pleasant surroundings for visitors to enjoy. It also provided the setting for presentation of the twelve

best results from a student project staged by Schattdecor with the School of Form, an acclaimed design high school in Poznan, Poland. In this project various tasks concerned with digital printing were tackled by 36 second-year students. The results put on show at the Euroshop 2014 were also documented in a brochure. Schattdecor's showing at Euroshop 2014 concluded with a digital print furniture foil originally exhibited at Interzum 2013. As shown by initial orders for several hundred square metres, Schattdecor’s designers have scored a particular hit with this product. Renolit Covaren is setting trends with the new and sophisticated structures of the premier 3D films. The range includes incredibly realistic woodgrain to metallic effects and matt finishes in solid colours, and high gloss films in brilliant decors and colours. Renolit Alkoren collects a classic range of woodgrains and solid colours, all in different shades and tones, from light to dark and vibrant to subtle. Exotic timbers and fruitwoods complement the traditional species of oak, beech, maple and cherry. “Yesterdays reloaded” – the trend and not fashion Texture. Like a natural fabric but with the impression of the latest technology, it gives surfaces a feeling and personality, providing visual and physical stimuli.

F

ashion is the spirit of the time, up-to-date but ephemeral. By contrast, a trend develops slowly, lasts for 5-30 years and comes into being through change in the community. Emerging trends include individuality and sustainability and, with an uncertain economic situation, as pressure to perform grows, the home becomes a place for retreat, security and sanctuary. Old values and traditions are being rediscovered and gaining in importance. Interior design is becoming more emotional – “the good old days”, our “yesterdays” are being “reloaded”. The Bausch Decor | BauschLinnemann Design Department have defined two key flows within the “Yesterdays reloaded” trend. The newly developed and trendy décors, colours and fantasy designs can be easily integrated within the worlds of “Scuffy elements” and “Peppy noble”.

Scuffy elements – dedicated to the imperfect Industrial design and recycled products define this interior trend. Cultural mix is the theme of design. Folklore pattern and expressive colours harmonise effectively with the archaic basics. “Scuffy elements” décors are natural, authentic and powerful, featuring woven textile structures and traditional artisan craftsmanship. Authentic, weathered timbers with cracks and holes highlight sustainability and the recycling concept. Authentic furniture is created with functional and indestructible qualities. The powerful textures generating the impression of imperfection are easily combined with intensive colours.

Avela. The hazelnut shades bring a sense of warmth and wellbeing that works well in furniture, flooring, doors and panels.

Tisano Oak. The dependable oak never ages and is suitable for any theme, inspiring trust and values.

Peppy noble – classic and with pep This new, classic living trend appeals with a sense of functionality and sleek modernity. Filigree and organic forms generate a cheerful feel-good atmosphere. The design of the 1950s and 1960s is being reassessed and reinterpreted with art deco elements being reloaded. Classic artisan craft is also being reloaded in “Peppy noble”. Natural materials like wood, stone, felt, leather and linen are being applied in elegant, pure designs, and knitted and woven patterns are once again becoming predominant. Tender pastel colours define the theme although metallic accents of copper, silver or gold enhance the value. Smooth surfaces are choreographed with natural materials to present a dynamic and holistic image. Peppy noble is the luxury of yesterday, with the colours and contours of today... for tomorrow.

“Rough Oak”. This new design has a unique extreme deep emboss which gives the impression of brushed wood with a feeling of real Oak.

hen you picture a painted kitchen, what do you see? Not so long ago, the painted kitchen was seen as a traditional finish for those opting for a rustic, country-style kitchen. Quintessentially English, it scored more highly on its homely appeal than its design innovation. But today, the painted kitchen is experiencing something of a renaissance, with UK consumers looking to create nostalgia and warmth in their homes. To work with the rustic sawn look, wood panel manufacturer Egger has launched a revolutionary new range of MFC boards that are virtually indistinguishable from a painted timber finish. Exclusive to the UK market, the ST27 range, which is ideal for carcasses, end panels, plinths and doors, can be used to replicate the highlypopular painted finish at a fraction of the price. It also offers a low-maintenance alternative to timber without the timeconsuming operations that cutting and working with veneers involves. The innovative range, which offers an underlying oak-grain design by using a new texture plate during manufacture, comprises ten décors in neutral heritage uni-colours, as well as a painting-grade option - effectively

a primed board that the customer can paint in any colour of their choice. “At the higher end of the market, leading manufacturers are offering a bespoke approach to design. With Egger’s ST27 range, you have the ability to paint according to requirements, giving those manufacturers with painting facilities a wide scope to keep stocks low and produce according to demand,” explains Nick McClughin, Head of Marketing for Egger UK. To add to the designs, matching 0.8mm edging and a 2mm painting-grade option are available to spray any colour, offering a simple approach to the creation of a timeless, high-value look. “There isn’t really anything like this in the market at the moment, hence the buzz around its launch,” explains Nick. “Our customers are excited about the new range as it provides them with a product that replicates the look of painted timber or veneer at a price point that may allow them to enter a new market segment, enhance or protect margins, compete at a higher price point or gain market share.” For more information, or samples, contact the Egger ZOOM® hotline on 0845 606 8888 or visit www.egger.co.uk

From moisture resistant products to kitchen carcasses, veneer and veneered panels to furniture, Finsa has a solution for you.

stablished in the UK since the early 90s, Finsa has become well known for its engineered wood - a product which has found applications in diverse products from furniture to flooring and washrooms to concert halls. Whilst its range of beautiful melamine faced décors has put Finsa at the cutting edge of style trends, it’s really boards for special applications that Finsa has become best known for - products like Fibracolour, for example. Fibracolour is an MDF product which offers solid colour through its entire thickness and Finsa is believed to be the only manufacturer in the market to offer a product which is completely black. An exclusive production process ensures this innovative product comes with supreme technical properties as well as a consistent black colour across the board. Compac Plus and CompacMel Plus (the background picture to these pages) are the natural evolution of woodbased fibreboards: compact, high density fibreboards with acclaimed mechanical properties. CompacMel Plus offers high strength melamine coating for application in panelling, cubicles, lockers, wall and door cladding and worktops. However, perhaps the most unique product in Finsa’s range is SuperPan, a hybrid panel with two outer layers of MDF and a core of particleboard. SuperPan is also the name of a product family comprising hi-tech boards like SuperPan Star, a panel with the Kaurit Light (30% lighter) technology developed by BASF. Finsa has also developed a comprehensive line of Fire Retardant wood panels for the UK market which includes raw particleboard (Fimapan), MDF, melamine faced boards, lightweight Greenpanel and laminate flooring. All Finsa products are CE marked and are available with FSC or PEFC certification. Stock is kept at the main warehouse in Birkenhead so customers are assured of prompt delivery. Daltons Wadkin has long been UK and Ireland distributors for the high profile Dutch manufactured Elcon range of vertical panel saws. The range encompasses small, manually operated machines up to fully programmable automatic models with advanced clamping, like the Elcon Quadra which is virtually a beam saw in the vertical plane. Designed to handle a range of materials, cut depths are available up to 150mm and sheet size is virtually limitless - up to 16 metres in length. Elcon also produce heavy duty horizontal machines with automatic saw travel where either the materials to be cut or the preferred methods of operation require this alternative set up.

Altendorf sliding table panel saws are another major part of the Daltons Wadkin portfolio. These famous machines, manufactured in Germany, are amongst the finest quality saws available. A wide range of models and sizes is available and specifications include such options as pre-scoring, power rise, fall and tilt adjustments, power fences and even full programming incorporating touch-screen controls. Again these machines are suitable for cutting a wide range of materials and have found favour in industries as diverse as furniture and aerospace. Daltons Wadkin also distributes the Nimac range of beam saws. Crosscut saws also feature highly in the Daltons Wadkin portfolio, in particular the fully automatic programmable Salvador range from Italy and the handoperated Wadkin Radial Arm crosscuts, which are manufactured in-house. The Salvador machines are designed for fast, accurate production and are used widely by furniture and other timber based manufacturers. The range includes simple straight cutting upstroke saws, such as the Classic 40/50, to straight and angle cutting machines like the Superpush 200 and the Super Angle 600, which include optimising and defecting systems, automatic stop systems and fully programmable controls. Wadkin BRA crosscuts have been on the market for a long time but the latest versions available in 350, 400 and

universal’s 4th U

niversal Packing Specialists (UPS), based near Heathrow, has added a fourth Standard model to its allStriebig stable of vertical panel saws, the oldest of which has been in use for 23 years. The four saws size sheet materials including plywood, Tri-Wall high performance corrugated board, foam and polystyrene, used in the production of packing cases. Universal Packing Specialists is one of the largest independent export packing and case-making companies at Heathrow. It packs everything from heavy machinery to fine art and from antiques to hazardous goods and offers its case making service to freight companies that do not have their own production facilities. The latest Standard TRK2 model the second to go into service at UPS was bought to meet an increase in business and provide added flexibility. Speaking of his latest purchase, General Manager Mark Davis commented, “I would not dream of going for another make of saw. A Striebig may not be the cheapest available but it's the very best. We operate 24 hours a day from Monday to Friday and the saws,

which are vital to us, are in constant use from 3.00pm to 5.00am. “I have stayed with Striebig for all our sawing needs because, despite the sheer amount of work we get out of them, they just never let us down. The only problem we have ever had with the oldest machine in over 20 years has been a broken bearing.” Standard TRK2s come in nine frame sizes for handling panels up to 5300 x 2240mm. The 5524 models chosen by Universal Packing have a maximum cutting size of 4300 x 2240mm. All Standard machines have a cutting depth of 80mm. The latest saw, like all three previous machines, was supplied and installed by Striebig's exclusive UK agent, TM Machinery Sales Ltd of Leicester. “It's a testament to the reliability of the Standard range that Universal Packing keeps coming back to us for more,” says TM’s Sales Director, Matt Pearce. “It's a great advertisement for the robustness and precision engineering of Striebig saws that the first saw supplied in 1991 is still going strong after all these years.” Call TM on 0116 271 7155 or visit www.tmmachinery.co.uk

The reliability of Striebig vertical panel saws over the last 20 years has convinced one of Heathrow’s largest independent export packing case manufacturers to order a fourth saw.

iben is no stranger to futuristic technology. Its supremely efficient flagship beam saw, the Prisma 6000, paves the way with eerily silent pushers and a 600 kilo saw carriage that floats along linear guides on magnetic power of 1000 kilos, accelerating through 5G to cut 15 cycles a minute - and every time the saw carriage brakes, a KERS system converts the braking action into power, reducing its electricity consumption by up to 40%. Construction is so simplified on the Prisma 6000 that wear and replacement parts are almost a thing of the past.

The tilting blade on Martin’s T75 PreX sliding table panel saw makes light work of angle cutting and, even when tilted to 45 degrees, the blade is large enough to cut to a height of 130mm.

on the tilt For cutting precise angles, Martin’s German-made T75 PreX is a sliding table panel saw that has everything you need.

I

t was back in February 2006 that Martin presented what’s believed to be the first sliding table saw with a saw blade that could be tilted to both sides. Then, in March 2010, Martin launched its high performance, flexible T75 PreX and, to date, more than 800 machines with 2 x 46° tilting technology have been sold. “Our concept has made history,” comments Martin’s Michael Mühldorfer. “With the unique combination of cutting height and tilting range, woodworkers are enthusiastic about the opportunities that the T75 PreX has to offer.” He is convinced that, with its tilting range of 2 x 46°, the T75 PreX represents a development every bit as momentous as the original T75 back in 1959. The T75 was hailed as the first sliding table panel saw to offer a oneway tiltable blade. Where once machine constraints determined work method, with the T75 PreX the operator is free to execute each angular cut at the cross-cut fence and at the rip fence exactly the way the

job demands - without compromises. The tilting drive and saw blade arbour of the T75 PreX have been refined since the launch of the saw in 2006 and now include increased motor horsepower (up to 11kW) and a cutting angle with an accuracy of 0.01 degrees. The tilting drive as well as the saw blade arbour bearings differ significantly, too, in that the saw blade arbor is moved from two sides. Michael Mühldorfer is adamant this is the only way to move the heavy trunnion over an angle of 92° so precisely and reliably. Ingenious engineering solutions have resulted in precise cutting with a very large 550mm diameter blade. Even when tilted to 45°, the machine still reaches a cutting height of around 130 mm measured vertically from the table and, despite a total tilting range of 92°, the blade guard provides complete protection at any angle. It can even be equipped with sensors. Other features include a 3-axis scoring saw. Details: 0049 8332 911 144 or visit www.martin.info

A self-contained, rigid, heavy-duty machining centre with a vibration-free fixed gantry, Hamuel Reichenbacher’s Eco offers the highest levels of flexibility. Single and twin table options are available and each machine is fully customised and built to order.

when weight is Hamuel Reichenbacher has had a rough ride in the UK but in the last three years, service problems have been overcome, customer confidence has been restored and orders are rolling in.

B Above. Bob McDermott, MD of Hamuel Reichenbacher Ltd in the UK.

ob McDermott is a real weightwatcher. Walk into the Dewsbury offices of Hamuel Reichenbacher UK and, as a potential customer, he probably won’t put you on the scales that lurk menacingly in the entrance to the smallest room - but you’ll almost certainly be introduced to the heavyweight statistics of the Germanbuilt machinery his company sells. “The build quality is second to none,” he effervesces. “Hamuel Reichenbacher machining centres are made from sectional steel that’s double the weight our competitors use. They’re overengineered by more than 100 percent. Without exception, they offer greater longevity, even when machining

heavyweight materials like solid oak day in, day out.” It’s a fact that many of his customers at the very top end of both automotive and furniture manufacturing have appreciated for decades, though he freely admits few of his clients have appreciated the levels of service Hamuel Reichenbacher UK has been able to provide in the past. When Bob took over as Managing Director of Hamuel Reichenbacher UK three years ago, he made it his mission to contact every Reichenbacher customer and offer free health checks for their machines. He prioritised customer relations, appointing a team of five experienced service engineers with a promise of four hours from callout to

s advantageous Hamuel Reichenbacher’s pin table offers simplicity and increased safety in operation. The programme drops the pin wherever there’s a cutting path. There are no pods to crash into with the spindle. “Once the material is pushed up to the stops, the machine loads and does everything,” says Bob McDermott. “Setup time is zero and this is a major advantage for manufacturers.”

arrival on site, regardless of distance. “Our service is now second to none,” says Bob. “We have five engineers and we’re already looking for a sixth. We can also get German engineers here within 24 hours for specific problems. “We are still servicing machines that are 30 years old and we hold spares for them. Anything major we don’t have in stock can be delivered to us at our customer’s premises by 9am the following morning if we order by 2pm.” He’s so serious about customer service that he is in the process of investing in a machine that will keep his stock of spindles turning constantly so there’s no danger of seizure, meaning a spindle change and recalibration can be carried out in 4 hours and the machine can be run at full tilt a few minutes after fitting. Remember that old Remington ad on TV with Victor Kiam? He liked the product so much he bought the company. Bob is so confident in the success of Hamuel Reichenbacher machines that he’s done exactly the same: he now owns 40% of Reichenbacher UK - and already its fortunes have turned around and his ten-strong UK operation accounted for 7.5% of the Group’s turnover last year. Impressed? You’ll be even more impressed with Hamuel Reichenbacher’s technology. “We have five basic machines,” explains Bob. “97% of all the machines we manufacture are bespoke and 95%

are five-axis machines. The biggest machine we’ve ever made has a 59metre bed, a two-metre z axis and is making Russian aeroplane wings; the smallest is our room-size Eco.” However, despite the statistics, it’s probably not size that is Hamuel Reichenbacher’s greatest claim to fame. The engineers would say it’s the one hundredth of a millimetre tolerances Reichenbacher machines run to for years on end without flinching. The users would probably say it’s the flexibility which results from a multitude of options, topped with bespoke design for their application. “We make a point of knowing the job our customers want to do intimately before choosing a machine which fits the job,” says Bob. “Then we look at specific features, such as three- or fiveaxis heads, pin tables, beam tables, matrix tables, parallel tables... Then we match the machine to the task. Finally, when it comes to quoting, we quote an all-inclusive price, not a price with extras for this or that. We like to keep things simple and transparent.” From the unique pin table, shown on the previous page, to the latest generation of control systems, there is a solution waiting for whatever problem you present. To cope with Flexfurn’s CNC work, RW proposed a Busellato Easy Jet.

busellato the F Flexfurn MD, Peter Whiteland, freely admits he’s not a machine buff. He put all his trust in RW, gave them a brief to solve his production problem and is delighted with the result. It not only does the job, it came within his budget.

rom humble beginnings supplying waterproof clothing and canteen tables to the builders of the M5, Cheltenham-based Flexfurn has established itself as a market leader in folding and stackable furniture. With its own 20,000 sq ft manufacturing facility and showroom, the 10-strong team creates made-to-order solutions for the events and hire market and for the education, office furniture and hospitality markets. After working with the Belgian company, Europa 2000, for several years, the two companies merged in 2007, with an aim to expand their joint product range into other European countries. Until recently, Flexfurn concentrated on small-scale manufacturing. With its sights set firmly on breaking the global market, Peter Whiteland, Managing Director of Flexfurn, decided to visit RW at the Birmingham trade show, W12, two years ago. “We spoke to several machinery companies whilst at the show,” he recalls, “But RW, unlike many of the companies we spoke to, was able to supply all the machinery we needed in one go. As a family-run

business ourselves, working with and getting to know the RW family was a strong selling point to us.” Before RW started to work with Flexfurn, the company had a beam saw and not much else. “It was all we needed to begin with,” admits Peter, “But with a view to expanding into Europe, we needed machinery that could cope with a higher capacity and maintain high standards.” Peter freely admits he's not a machine buff. His brief to RW was based not so much on specific machines as the tasks his company needed to perform, so his reliance on RW's expertise was absolute. Nesting capability was critical because of the many varied shapes in which Flexfurn produces its tabletops. Whatever the machine, it needed to work with jumbo-sized sheets of MFC, melamine MDF, HPL with a chipboard core and plywood. Coping with the machining of material that is 12mm24mm thick was another requirement and last but far from least, a compact footprint was essential as Flexfurn's unit had to hold not only the new CNC but also an edgebander and a press. RW's

easy way proposal ticked all the boxes and met Peter's affordability criteria. To cope with Flexfurn's CNC work, RW proposed the Busellato Easy Jet, a compact, entry-level machine which is perfect for small to medium-sized furniture manufacturers who want a machine that allows easy access whilst in use and simple programming to save time. Free of material loading and handling systems but with all the capability of CNC, the Busellato Easy Jet brings the cost of CNC technology within easy reach of smaller companies, yet it’s flexible enough to enable them to respond to new opportunities with ease. Available in 4’ x 8’ and 5’ x 12’ tables with two boring heads (seven vertical spindles or seven vertical and four horizontal spindles with a grooving saw), two work areas in the X-axis (complete with front and rear reference stops and a ten-position tool changer), it's well equipped without being over the top. Its 9HP electrospindle runs at 24000rpm and both the electrospindle and the tool-changer are aggregateready. The vacuum grid table is the simplest way to hold flat panels and

comes with a variety of Schmalz vacuum cups. The machine can be networked or fed through USB connection. All in all, the Busellato Easy Jet is a very versatile machine, which is exactly what Flexfurn needed. “I had no CAD experience,” explains Peter. “This wasn't a problem for RW. They enlisted the help of several specialist engineers who not only installed the machine but trained me on it, too. They even flew one of Busellato's engineers over to train me and our Production Manager on the software. We were designing complex table shapes in hours.” “It's been a steep learning curve,” admits Peter. “It's a lot to take in but the team has been great and RW is coming back to do some more training with us next month.” As part of Flexfurn's production solution, RW also installed an Orma press, an Osama glue spreader, a Casadei Flexa 37 edgebander and a Vitap Eclipse edgebander. C

ross and Sansam has recently taken delivery of a second SCM Routech Chronos HT 5-axis CNC machining centre with a larger worktable and machining area. It’s thought to be the largest machine of its type manufactured by Routech for the European market. Pattern and mould making is a large percentage of the manufacturing at Cross and Sansam but, in recent years, the company has moved into specialist wood machining and mouldings. Impressed with their first Routech, Managing Director David Sansam and CAD/CAM Director James Sansam decided to purchase an additional 5-axis CNC with a much larger machining capacity. They opted for a Chronos HT with a 4250 x 4250mm table. The new machine has a 900mm Z-axis capacity. Machining is carried out by an 8.5kW Prisma Q routing head with 5 interpolating axes and SCM's Total Torque system, capable of 24,000rpm. Tools are fed to the routing spindle from a standard Rapid 12 Automatic toolchanger. The Chronos, with its rigid portal structure, has SCM's aluminium multi-functional work table fitted, with two 250m3/hour vacuum pumps, so the nesting of panels, when required, can be carried out easily. SCM's Xilog Plus operator interface enables easy and intuitive generation of programs using a graphical editor and tool parameters.

The possibility of importing DXF files allows integration of CAD/CAM packages with Cross and Sansam using Mastercam CAD/CAM. Customers’ paper drawings, emailed drawings or scanned components are converted into programs to be sent directly to the 5axis Chronos. These can be scaled up or down as required. Patterns are made from a combination of wood, plywood and synthetic materials. For machining, a typical job uses a tool that is a 20mm end mill for roughing out, running at 14,000rpm, with a feed speed of 15m/min, stepping down 3mm at a time. When finishing, a 10mm cutter with a 1mm radius is employed, running at 18,000rpm at a 10m/min feed speed and stepping down at 0.25mm. The final finish is excellent, despite the new Chronos being around 20% faster, and all tooling is compatible between the two Chronos machines. David Sansam comments, “Since installation of the second SCM Chronos, we have again been very impressed with its accuracy and quality of finish on the patterns and components after machining, whether they are very large up to the machine's capacity or fairly small, intricate component parts. Space allowing, who knows, yet another Chronos could be on the cards in the future.” Details: 0115 977 0044 or visit the SCM website, www.scmgroup-uk.com

ith over thirty years' experience in designing and manufacturing technical furniture, Lund Halsey has become expert at providing solutions for oil and gas control rooms, industrial control rooms, air traffic control, broadcast studios and surveillance. Based in Buckinghamshire, the company meets each customer's specific requirements by combining modern materials such as composites, aluminium, Corian and steel with traditional materials. At Lund Halsey, production speed and efficiency are factors that are vital to the workings of the business. With this in mind, the production team made contact with Magi-Cut Software to discuss a software solution that could support and streamline the company’s production process. “We had been looking for an optimising solution for some time that could assist us with common issues such as cutting list errors, blank cutting errors, over ordering of materials and waste costs that we were experiencing within our process,” recalls Lee Wakely, CNC programmer at Lund Halsey. “Then we discovered Magi-Cut Express Plus”. Magi-Cut's Express Plus cutting list optimiser and sheet layout software was ideal for Lund Halsey, reducing costs through yield maximisation and simplifying moving from a part list to the final cutting pattern. With the

ability to import part lists directly into the software, the number of actions required to achieve the final cutting patterns are greatly reduced. Furthermore, Express Plus contains a library for edging and laminates and a board library against which stock can be calculated and offcuts from previous jobs considered as available stock for new jobs. The user defines what he/she considers to be a retainable offcut size. Express Plus is highly customisable to the user's tastes giving control over the settings (optimising, trim and saw kerf, offcut size, etc), reports and cutting patterns (via the pattern editor). Lee at Lund Halsey also adds, “After taking advantage of the 30-day free trial we soon realised that Magi-Cut Express Plus assisted us with all of these issues. After minimum conversations with the Magi-Cut Express Plus expert

team and the added advantage of the online support we very quickly tailored the software to our requirements, thus making it easy to create cutting lists and optimising blanks within prelogged material board sizes. The pattern previews that the saw operators follow to cut the blanks are key in this operation for maximising yield and minimising waste.” Karl Twyford from Magi-Cut Software is delighted to be able to count Lund Halsey among the company’s Express Plus users. “Their end applications are unique,” says Karl, “And it was fantastic to see that the level of communication with them during their trial enabled them to customise the software to their own specific needs.” Lee confirms, “We have been using Magi-Cut Express Plus now for a number of months and are extremely happy with the results that the software is giving us.” Magi-Cut Express Plus is available to download for a free 30-day trial from www.magi-cut.co.uk/ExpressPlus and the Magi-Cut support team is available to help you with any questions that you have during your evaluation. Why not give it a try? You can also run through the different features of the software with the Magi-Cut team in an online remote support session. a recipe for Maka’s reputation for innovative, customised solutions has made its machines a firm favourite among manufacturers with complex production tasks to perform.

The Maka CR27t

he recipe for success for many specialist furniture manufacturers lies in the continuity of its workforce: highly skilled craftsmen, able to turn their hand to designing and making both modern and traditional furniture, efficiently and reliably. The experience and skills are indispensable. The focus of many investment decisions is rightly to facilitate quick reaction to an ever changing market whilst building on the craft skills and taking advantage of different materials and tools. A Maka Machining Centre is ideal for manufacturing high quality solid wood furniture, including bespoke solid wood bedroom furniture, where orders may consist of many small quantities of diverse items such as doors, headboards, legs and cabinets of various sizes. The demands of such production are intense, requiring high quality workmanship and finish across a huge variety of jobs, quick delivery and on-budget production. Over the years, Maka has designed and built many solutions to meet such

challenges. Iain Young, Maka UK's MD, understands well the need to deliver customised solutions and the need manufacturers have for skilled engineers and support staff. “The engineers’ skills and experience are indispensable,” he says. “Many have worked in the company for decades, and generations of the same family can still be seen in 160-strong Maka today. Even in the UK, our subsidiary's service and installation team all have over 10 years' experience with the company.” “Maka also recognises the need to respond quickly to the demands of the market,” he continues. “We now provide a wider range of modular platforms as standard, all of which have recently been upgraded to provide improved performance, handling and ease-of-use, upon which specific solutions can be compiled to satisfy the end-users.” Maka, located in the Bavarian town of Nersingen for 60 years, has over 30 years of experience specialising in CNC machining centres. However, the company has never lost sight of its roots in the solid wood processing industry, where the company first started with the revolutionary “Swing Mortiser”, many of which can still be found operating today. Maka machining centres are innovative high-end solutions which provide a variety of machine formats and sizes on which to create an optimal solution. The moving table MK7s is Maka’s entry level 5-axis machine, ideally specified for efficiently processing small and medium size workpieces, in small batches. “It's a jobbing machine,” says the UK MD Iain Young, “available with single or twin tables. The MK7 is easily accessible, providing easy loading with extended tables, easy cleaning and servicing, and minimal maintenance. Even with high-end features for quick-

setting and high-speed machining, the Maka remains a down-to-earth and practical solution.” Makas are now also available with energy conserving drives, reducing operating costs. For greater capacity and versatility, larger models like the SM20, MM7, CR and CM27 are available. The SM20 is designed for high volume nesting operations and solid wood panel processing while the CM27 features the heaviest of the heavy-duty constructions for 5-axis machining. “The CM27tx combines 5-axis capability with 3-axis routers and drills. It also features twin tables for non-stop operating, twin bridges and Twin-Channel Control to enable multiple processes to be undertaken simultaneously,” says Iain. “This particular model also features Maka’s unique Tool Shuttle which acts as an intermediary magazine.” For many applications, the PE90 format is ideal, providing the power and flexibility for handling bespoke panels of all shapes and sizes. “It has the strength

You wouldn’t think water jet cutting of MDF would be a great idea but take a look at this sample: no swelling, just a super clean cut you’d struggle to make in one pass on a machining centre equipped with conventional cutting tools.

£2,500 a month N Biesse’s all-inclusive, low cost finance might make you think seriously about the benefits of water jet cutting - and you’d be amazed at the savings waterjet technology can offer you with a variety of materials.

o, it won’t cut chipboard but Intermac’s new Primus waterjet cutter will zip through MDF, HDF, laminate, fabric, foam, leather, glass, solid surfacing materials, granite and stone - even steel of up to 150mm thick - much faster and cleaner than machines equipped with conventional cutting technology. And remarkably, by partnering with Asset Finance Solutions, Biesse UK is able to offer the Intermac Primus on either hire purchase, or a five-year operating lease (walk away at the end) for just £2,500 a month with a 10% deposit, refundable on delivery. So what are the advantages of water jet cutting? The Intermac Primus is a true CNC machine, capable of processing most materials and switching between them rapidly. With a kerf of just 0.1mm and built-in nesting via the remote control console, material wastage is much lower than with conventional tooling. No special tools are required as the water jet will drill more or less any diameter hole as well as cut - and the waterjet can be placed away from other machines that require connection to a dust extraction. The five-axis options facilitate the cutting of complex shapes and, says Biesse, set up times are much

quicker than with a CNC router, not least because there are no suction cups or clamps to move. Positioning is by laser. The water jet itself exerts no thermal or mechanical stress on the material it cuts either and where garnet is required - for cutting of glass, stone and hard materials - the hopper is controlled by PLC. The less garnet you need, the less frequently you will have to change the focussing tubes - the only replaceable component in the cutting head. Maintenance costs, says Biesse, are very low indeed - but if you opt for one of the Biesse finance packages, Biesse Total Care maintenance is included in the monthly price you pay. And it is exactly what it says: a service contract which includes all service costs. Five standard machines are available from a bed size of 1840 x 4000mm to 3210 x 6000mm (a custom built machine can have a bed of practically any size you need) and there are various loading systems to suit different operations. In addition to three or five axis options, twin head configurations include two three-axis heads, two fiveaxis heads, or one of each. WG’s beam saw is a Mayer 80 PS from Ney Ltd.

a helping hand When starting a business seems like a tough task, Ney’s finance package and follow up service is there to support you as WG Kitchens found out.

“W

e wouldn't be here today without Ney,” begins Steve Green, Managing Director of WG Kitchens. With over 30 years of experience in the woodworking industry, Steve was aware of Ney's solid reputation as a woodworking machinery supplier and, through the grapevine, had heard stories about its willingness to help small businesses grow. With his sights firmly set on creating his own furniture manufacturing business, he approached Ney, hoping to have his own success story to tell. “It was now or never,” recalls Steve. “My colleague and I had just been made redundant from a contract kitchen company and we both knew that it was the right time to set up our own business.” Together, the duo put a business plan together, with the right machinery at the forefront of their minds.

“Like any new company, money was tight,” explains Steve. “From the off, we knew we wanted to make high-quality cabinetry for the retail market - less superior products were not an option for us. To do this we would need several machines but we knew that getting the right machinery at a price we could afford would be no mean feat.” After securing some funding from the government's Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Steve, like so many other small business owners, turned to Ney's ProWood Finance team. “We'd heard great things about Ney's finance agreements and the options didn't disappoint. The terms were flexible and perfectly suited to a new company. ProWood also allowed us to purchase different machines as we continued to grow, simply and economically something we have utilised in the four years we have been in business.”

Right. The Fravol Smart allows WG Kitchens to edge 50mm boards. Says Steve, “It’s the only one on the market in this price bracket.” Below. WG’s Project 310 CNC was an ex-demonstration model from Ney’s showroom. It was supplied and working within 24 hours.

Above. The Detel Prima 63 is a multi-borer, multi-head machine with one horizontal and two vertical boring groups, all with quick release spindles.

Establishing the business in a 3,000 square foot unit in Staffordshire, the workshop included four machines, all purchased through Ney. A range of new and used machines was chosen to reflect WG Kitchen's budget: a radius Edgebander and trimming machine, a Paoloni Beam Saw, an Ortza edgebanding machine and an Ortza CNC machine. Ney's engineers were also on hand to train staff on how to use and maintain each machine. Growth for the company was quick and larger premises and more staff were required a few years later. “We reached the targets of our five-year business plan in two years. We simply needed more space to cope with the orders,” explains Steve. With the company's turnover almost doubling year on year and its growth up by 225% since it opened for business, it wasn't only the premises that needed to be upgraded. “With unexpected growth we found that the machinery we originally bought was struggling with the workload. We were needing to create over 200 cabinets a week - something our machines were not designed to do,” explains Steve. “We spoke to Ney and together we came up with a solution. Within 24 hours we had new machines being delivered to the premises and old ones being taken away.”

The new machines included a Fravol Smart, which was chosen specifically for WG Kitchen's work. “Ney has made a point of getting to know us and the work we do, which has proved extremely useful when researching new machinery and components. The Smart was recommended to us because of our work with 50mm board. It's the only one on the market in this price-bracket that can work with a material this thick.” Additional growth was also taken into account with the arrival of a Project 310 CNC and a Mayer beam saw. “Each machine was demonstrated to us in Ney's showroom and both Ney and WG Kitchens were confident that the machinery would increase productivity considerably without the need for more staff - manufacturing up to 350 cabinets a week.” For now, this is where the story ends but the next chapter is in sight. The business duo has already set WG Kitchen's future targets. “With Ney by our side we are confident that we'll be able to double our output in the next two years. We're certain that we wouldn't have been able to set the company up without Ney's help and we're confident that our partnership will continue to get stronger and stronger.” For information call Ney Ltd on 024 763 08100 or visit the company’s website at www.ney.co.uk

58 • FURNITURE JOURNAL MARCH 2014 The F.A.S.T system does not require pallets or support panels yet it allows joint pick-up of multiple items in a single machine cycle. Right. The F.A.S.T warehouse management system memorises the location of each package and includes a procedure for storing on the shelf that allows placing and retrieving multiple items by means of reciprocal thrust between packages and package positioning relative to the stocking availability on the shelf being used.

From the warehouse design stage to control of every element of stock in the warehouse, F.A.S.T from Cassioli delivers high speed, just-in-time performance to streamline your operation.

Above. The pick-up device adjusts to various heights in the storing cell and can handle products of considerably different shape, weight and size.

assioli’s reputation for innovation and for developing revolutionary solutions to take your storage and picking to a new level of efficiency long since reached the status of legend. Since the Italian company realised its unique, patented, F.A.S.T automated storage solution for furniture storage, its status in this highly specialised market has grown even further. Perfect for companies that plan production based on demand, Cassioli‘s F.A.S.T system replaces manual systems completely, optimising finished product storage, customer order grouping and product shipment. The F.A.S.T system overcomes problems many conventional warehouses encounter, such as guaranteeing single package selection, handling only similarly-sized packages, or forcing a system to operate on unitary package handling. F.A.S.T system logic keeps stock in hand based on goods sold, storing

items of different sizes, shapes and weights in the same cell. There’s no handling of empty pallets and the problem created by products arriving late is completely eliminated. Space is optimised and, when unexpected variations occur in production or shipment plans, F.A.S.T allows for justin-time modification of pick-up sequences whilst simultaneously reducing lead times overall. Compared with manual handling, Cassioli say F.A.S.T reduces damage as well as errors and the risk of industrial accidents. When compared with warehouses equipped with single package picking devices, Cassioli says F.A.S.T, delivers significant time and cost advantages, allowing the simultaneous transfer of multiple items both during loading and unloading and drastically reducing the workload for the stacker crane. Compared with batch, conveyor belt, roller conveyor and fork-based warehouses,

t with cassioli F.A.S.T optimises and organises even totally random supply - and it can handle packages of different dimensions in the same grouping, even when the dimensions are significantly different. One of the major problems for many warehouses is open pallets at the end of a production line. In factories not equipped with F.A.S.T, the line follows production in the panel processing sequence. Picking is carried out in the order the components are produced and grouping is typically according to customer order. Using the F.A.S.T system, faster picking operations are possible because packages are grouped by type, which also helps to streamline and optimise machining operations. F.A.S.T handles and stores the product in the warehouse without the use of test panels or pallets, providing a unique item retrieval and deposit system based on a thrust mechanism. Physical product allocation inside the warehouse

is based on the cell access index, assignment criteria for stacker crane operations and the use of combined cycles - all key features contributing to the speed of the F.A.S.T system in operation. During warehouse project design stages, Cassioli’s simulation software allows sizing of the warehouse according to real customer requirements, beginning with concrete data and enabling easy calculation of warehouse dimensions, shelf sizes and the number of stacker cranes required. The Automod ® simulation system analyses the impact that flow timing, management policies and incoming and outgoing product distribution in the warehouse have in terms of performance, making accurate projections possible. cost-effective

cutting Investing in a tool that costs more to start with can work out a lot cheaper in the long run if it lasts longer.

E

ven with the UK construction output forecast to grow in 2014, it is understandable that the pennies have to be looked after, but Brian Maddox, UK Sales Manager of Leitz Tooling UK, believes there are massive hidden costs in compromising on tools. He says, “Our tools are sometimes perceived to be expensive but, if through quality and consistency of service they last twice as long - and in many cases longer - than the alternatives, then it has to be money well spent.” “Customers who have invested in Leitz in the UK over the last 30 years understand this,” continues Mr Maddox. “That part is simple, but there is a lot more to using Leitz tools. Everything we make is manufactured to EN847 1-3, which means that every tool is tested to a high standard of accuracy and safety which helps prolong the life of the tool and, ultimately, the machine itself. Our tools

give good finishes, which mean less sanding and rectification, less coating and ultimately, lower labour costs. “What we call 'environmental issues' - labour costs, material cost, rectification cost, downtime, setting costs, noise issues, safety issues and dust issues to name a few - far outweigh tooling budgets, but correct, quality tools can have a fantastic positive impact on other costs.” Explains Managing Director Simon Liddell, “We have many examples where customers were changing tools every shift. Now it's once per week. Other areas where we have introduced new technology, such as our MC33 coated tools, have seen dramatic improvement, with even better surface finishes, more components produced per hour and a lower tooling cost per component.” A high quality sharpening service is another key issue. Derek Statham, Leitz UK‘s service and works manager says,

“Sharpening TCT saws 12-15 times is relatively easy but the ability to sharpen the same saws to 20+ regrinds can reduce your overall tooling costs by 50% or more. The high precision grinding service we provide can also yield longer service life between sharpening or repair, resulting in fewer tool changes, less machine down-time and improved productivity - all of which are big concerns for all our customers, whether they are small joinery workshops or large manufacturers.” One Leitz customer, Grant Westfield, produces 4,000 to 5,000 domestic shower panels per week in 9mm plywood, laminated both sides and PVA glue bonded. Cutting five stacked boards at a time, demanded a change of saw blade every 300 to 400 boards. A trial with Leitz Tooling had saw blades lasting up to 1,358 boards. Makita continues to innovate in the power tool market and has developed twin 18v power to expand their range. Two more economical 18v lithium-ion batteries allow the generation of 36v power rather than the single larger battery option. This advance has already seen a converter plate allowing 18v batteries to be attached to 36v machines but now the latest bodies allow direct and compact installation of the two 18v cells into the machine itself. Using twin 18v power the 36v DC motor in the DHR263 26mm rotary hammer drill generates 2.5 Joules of impact energy and up to 4,800 blows per minute. The DHR263 has the standard SDS-PLUS chuck but there is also the DHR264 with an interchangeable quickchange SDS-PLUS to 3-jaw chuck. The DHS710 LXT 190mm circular saw also fits two 18v batteries and will run the blade up to 4,600rpm without load. The maximum cutting depth is 66mm at 90º and 49mm at 45º and the saw features a soft start and electric brake. It can also be connected to a dust vacuum system and the ergonomically designed handle allows perfect control.

Panel Systems has established a new CNC routing division with the investment of over £100K in the latest 5-axis equipment. One of the leading suppliers of decorative and composite panels in the UK, Panel Systems has seen the expansion of its capabilities and capacity after the installation of a Z5 5-axis CNC router from SCM. Chris Ibbotson, MD at Panel Systems, explained that “the latest technology will enable us to machine 3D shapes and handle materials up to 5m in length to meet the market demand for high quality routing services and rapid turnaround.” The 5-axis router can be used to machine more intricate and complex designs on timber, plastic, foam and composite materials using designs from customers’ drawings or Panel Systems’ CAD designers. The Sheffield-based company has also seen its CAD design team grow and has invested in new software systems, like Solidworks, alongside the existing Alphacam software.
