“D
esign is not making beauty,” wrote Louis Kahn, one of the most influential architects of the mid-20th century. “Beauty emerges from selection, affinities, integration, love.” The newly opened Marketing Suite at Decorative Panels Group has undoubtedly been a labour of love. Stunning, beautiful, inspired and inspiring, it is a work of art in its own right; an 8,500ft2 temple of design to which customers old and new have an open invitation. But it is not a sterile environment. Neither is it a museum. It is a place in which to explore and experiment, make different selections, create affinities and integrate them into successful furniture designs of the future. “The Marketing Suite is a showcase of everything we can offer,
but not a stale concept,” says Group MD, Guy Metcalfe. “Here, visitors can develop designs into reality in an inspirational environment. Everything is made from our materials. It’s a showcase to the versatility of our products; a working tool to help customers find the right tool and partner for their projects.” The moment you step through the entrance door the first impression takes your breath away: surrounded by original design classics, Floss lamps and Le Corbusier armchairs, the Chill Zone is a space befitting the foyer of the most upmarket of luxury hotels. Relax after your journey. Gather your thoughts. And amid icons of great design, prepare to be inspired. On your way to the DP Library and the DP Virtual Zone, take a moment to

reflect on the words of Thomas J Watson, the man once dubbed The World’s Greatest Salesman, as you pass through the Heritage Zone: “Design,” he wrote, “Must reflect the practical and aesthetic in business but above all... good design must primarily serve people.” The Decorative Panels Group has been serving people with good design in one form or other since 1879. The historical timeline of the company blends seamlessly into an informative About Us zone which concludes with a real time monitor showing production KPIs from all three DP Group companies. The DP Library, the DP Virtual Zone and the Mix & Match Zone are the creative work centres in the Marketing Suite. Select hard samples from the DP Library - the entirety of the DP Décor and DP Specialist ranges are represented and the latest DP Development Foils are presented on the walls as you enter the DP Virtual Zone - and take them through. On an enormous glass screen, using a state-of-the-art projection system, it’s here that you’ll be able to pull all the elements from the DP Library together, drawing from all the designs available and displaying them at actual size in fully-dressed bedroom, kitchen and living room settings. Using interactive touch screen technology, choose any design from the on screen pallet and drop it into any panel on the furniture set. High gloss finishes, woodgrains, unicolours - the possibilities to design and modify are endless. Finally, view from any of four camera angles, save your design and the
system will print it out along with the pallet of décors you used. In the Mix & Match Zone, A1 and A3 samples of any design available in the DP Décor and DP Specialist ranges may be chosen and displayed under daylight lighting conditions on a wall mounted track system, enabling you to refine your final choice. An imaginatively decorated stairwell which pays homage to the inspiration behind DP’s products leads to the first floor of the Marketing Suite. Dedicated to displays of product from all three companies in the Group, information on each may be collected and emailed to you via an iPad. Here you’ll find displays of everything from finished furniture, exploded carcases, panel components and edging to a Senoplast TopX tunnel. The Be Creative Zone encourages you to explore further with different finishes, edgebands and hardware - but it’s at the conclusion you’ll find the very latest developments: on raised plinths, futuristic products are presented in an Innovation Zone. The latest generation of décors sits alongside presentations of new materials not yet released. It was Giorgio Armani who once said, “I design for real people. I think of our customers all the time.” That same philosophy holds true for Decorative Panels Group and nowhere is it more evident than in the new Marketing Suite. It’s designed for you. It’s designed for your customers. And DP Group openly invites you to use it. Be one of the first to revel in design: call 01484 658341.

xhibiting at W14 forms an important part of their forward-going strategy for dynamic development in a resurgent market, according to David Sanders, Sales Director of Blum UK. He explained that “the plan for W14 will be more about how Blum are able to help their front-line customers - KBB and cabinet furniture manufacturers - to plan smart ways forward with integrated partnerships with suppliers… rather than focus on products alone.” At the recent KBB exhibition, one of the most popular and fascinating elements of the Blum display was the “Investing in Innovation” section where two apprentices from Blum Austria’s international flagship training scheme demonstrated their outstanding skills to visitors. They showed how one of the world’s leading furniture fittings and systems manufacturers is able to secure their future through innovation, training and skills development. This highly successful aspect of the exhibit will be replicated at W14 with even further
emphasis. David Sanders said: “The most important question to consider is - will the design of that product still work with the customer in 10 years? That’s the challenge for manufacturers in the future.” He continued, “Carrying on from our highly successful showing at KBB, W14 will give us the next high profile opportunity in what is our ‘H to H’ (human to human) marketing strategy where we bring not only our products, but also our services and recognised expertise to our industry and business partners. “W14 is undoubtedly the best and most high profile exhibition for the furniture manufacturing industry and Blum will be there to interact with our front-line customers by demonstrating our skills in working with wood and all associated products. We will have our Austrian apprentice colleagues on the stand to show how Blum develops for the future and our partners in business but also plan to show how Blum UK want to introduce this element of co-operation into the UK.”

Following a formal education David Sanders joined his father’s business manufacturing and retailing kitchen furniture, based in Liverpool. David developed a strong understanding and respect for the quality and innovation inherent in the hardware and fittings hinges and drawerboxes - from their supplier Blum UK. In 1995 David, with agreement from his father, decided to ‘go it alone’ and joined Symphony Kitchens. The Blum UK representative for the north of England at the time, Bob Parker, tracked him down and persuaded him to apply for a job in sales with Blum, which resulted in discussions with Blum UK MD David Sanders, Sales Director of Blum UK.
Michael Powell at the 1994 ASFI exhibition. The approval of David’s plans to form a Blum distribution network for the north of England led to him taking over Blum UK distribution nationally. The way Blum plans and works worldwide mean that he was already earmarked for a future director of sales. And so in 2001 David moved with his family to the Blum UK HQ in Milton Keynes to learn and experience all company operations - from the warehouse up. In 2009 David Sanders was appointed Blum UK Sales Director with responsibility for marketing as well.

g the box Time is money when you work alone. Steve Borrett has found Unilin’s ClicBox has given him more time and enabled him to open a new market.
“I
t takes me longer to get it out of the box than it does for me to put it together,” explains Steve Borrett, owner of Great Yarmouth-based D&G Kitchens, when asked how easy Unilin’s ClicBox is to use. “I’ve never come across a product like it. It's so quick and easy to assemble, anyone could do it.” It’s not every day you hear a skilled kitchen fitter with more than 25 years experience in the trade tell you how simple part of his job is but then again, it’s not every day you are confronted with the ease and simplicity of a Unilin ClicBox.
As you walk around D&G Kitchens’ 55m2 showroom, it’s clear to see that the independent kitchen retailer and fitter knows a thing or two about kitchen manufacturing. He’s in demand. So much so, his diary is full for the next five months and, relying solely on word of mouth, he has won orders for more than 20 kitchens and 10 bedrooms in the last 12 months. But, for someone who works predominantly singlehandedly on all his projects, where does he find the time? “In this line of work, time is a valuable commodity. I have no time for gimmicks,” admits Steve. “I like to do a

job well. I openly tell people that I don’t make cheap kitchens, I make good-quality kitchens, so I’m sure it’ll come as no surprise when I say I always err on the side of caution when it comes to working with new products.” With the housing market on the move again, Steve didn’t want to turn work away but he desperately needed to find a way of saving time so he could capitalise on the upturn in enquiries. “I’d been manufacturing my own kitchen carcases for over 15 years,” he explains. “It was labour intensive but with nothing on the market that could rival the quality and effectiveness of my own carcases, I had no choice but to continue making them myself.” After seeing a demonstration of Unilin’s ClicBox at the end of last year during the May Design Series, Steve couldn’t resist giving it a go himself and in under a minute, he had created his very first ClicBox. “I was seriously impressed,” he recalls. “Not only was it quick to assemble, it was just as sturdy as my made-to-order carcases and offered my customers choice and flexibility in their designs.” ClicBox also ticked the box when it came to quality. “I was surprised how much thought had gone into the design of this product,” he adds. “Even the wall units had been made 30mm wider than a standard base
unit allowing for a full-size dinner plate to be stored easily. It’s this type of thing that gives me an edge over the competition.” Steve’s also impressed with the flexibility ClicBox gives him. Proud to offer design without limits, he needed a carcase that reflected the limitless possibilities his customers expected. The smart drilling pattern, which has been designed to match a range of fitting suppliers, means he can still offer four or five drawers and drawer liners can be added without the need to drill extra holes, providing customers with complete control over their kitchen. And, with help from Unilin’s UK distributor HPP, Steve can order from a range of forty-two cabinet sizes and formats in any colour for next day deliver. Now Steve has time on his side, he’s busy creating a new showroom that includes a ClicBox kitchen display. Without the need to manufacture carcases himself, he’s also had the time to explore new opportunities and opened a new market with a local housing developer. He readily confirms what Unilin, the makers of ClicBox, have been saying for a while: “Thanks to ClicBox, I’m able to spend more time fitting kitchens and less time creating carcases.” And that’s what it’s all about isn’t it? They have the added advantages of colour consistency over the lifetime of the furniture as well as being hard wearing and low maintenance. All three new synchronised pore textures in the Zoom 2014 update have a unique character and have been developed to offer a different tonality and feel from subtle and elegant to more rustic. “The new additions to Zoom do far more than complement the existing collection, they are truly evolutionary,” says Nick McLoughlin, Egger UK’s Head of Marketing. “When we presented our new wood developments to experienced design professionals as part of our NPD process they had difficulty telling them apart from a solid wood and veneer. This reaffirmed our belief that we have created a suite of products that not only look and
feel like the real thing but offer important performance benefits that are so important across the lifespan of the installation.” The latest décors include synchronised pore surfaces, where grain and texture are aligned, authentic and striking wood reproductions as well as soft-matt finishes and an industrial style ceramic look - in all a total of 23 new décors and six completely new textures in the Zoom laminate and melamine board range. The Feelwood Elegance ST27 texture exudes a modern and sophisticated feel whilst demonstrating the beauty and subtleness of nature. The fine, linear, yet natural texture is synchronised with the grain of a chestnut reproduction called Tortona to create an incredibly realistic finish. It is perfect for creating a high value, elegant look. Feelwood Nature ST28 texture, on the other hand, brings you closer to nature. The six new décors in Brushed Wood ST36 texture provide an irregular and very deep texture, combined with a matt appearance very similar to deeply brushed solid wood furniture. Ceramic ST87 texture explores a new direction combining concrete and ceramic, providing a contemporary, used look with a striking and industrial feel. And the fourth surface, Perfect Matt ST9 texture creates a modern, yet calming atmosphere with its tactile, matt finish and low reflection. Kleiberit PUR HM 707.9 polyurethane has been used for many years and it does provide an invisible glue line without opening, or rubber effect.
banishing the joins G
lue lines between panel and edge are what the furniture industry has long wanted to see banished. A number of solutions have been proffered over the years with varying degrees of success. When perfect processing conditions are met, classic hotmelts based on ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), polyolefin (APAO) or polyamide (PA) work well for edge banding panel materials but seem unable to provide an invisible glue line on a permanent basis, even though the glue line may appear completely closed. Over time, dust, household cleaners, humidity in the room and temperature changes take their toll, causing even a minimal joint opening to stand out. Rubber effect, caused by hand contact and daily cleaning, exacerbates the appearance, especially if light-coloured adhesives and panel materials have been used. Another relatively more expensive approach is to bond directly using laser technology which melts a matching coloured plastic layer that has been preapplied to the edge material. There's no
question that the glue line is more closed than with the classic bonding technology. However, thermoplastics remain - and with them, the rubber effect, though less pronounced, is still potentially a feature because it remains physically as well as chemically impossible to weld the edgeband to the panel. Even thermoplastics are not guaranteed to produce a zero glue line on a permanent basis. So what’s the solution? According to the adhesive specialist Kleiberit, Kleiberit PUR HM 707.9 polyurethane has been used for many years and it does provide an invisible glue line without opening, or rubber effect. The glue line from this reactive hotmelt is extremely hard, says Kleiberit, so rubber effect is unknown. Moreover, when correctly processed, it is also claimed to be permanently waterresistant because Kleiberit PUR HM 707.9 develops a real chemical bond with wood in the panel which can only be separated with excessive force. For more information call 01530 836699 or visit www.kleiberit.com
Are permanent invisible glue lines between panels and edgebands really possible? Kleiberit’s solution has been around for years.

urvomatic’s revolutionary mould making system dramatically lowers the cost of making curved components, enabling moulds to be made in a matter of minutes rather than hours. This Curvomatic system provides a simple method of constructing moulds of any size - and an equally effective and simple pressing system. Marketed primarily as a combined mould making and pressing system, Curvomatic can be used in membrane presses, withstanding extreme pressure to produce flawless curved panels using formers spaced at just 400mm apart. A modular structural surface is constructed from longitudinally connecting aluminium extrusions which join to produce a flexible aluminium skin 35mm thick with a minimum external radius of 79mm. The re-usable extrusions create a rigid, structural curved surfaces that can be used to form or bend other materials to a very high level of accuracy. If the name confuses you into thinking Holz-Handwerk is a show for the smaller end of the craft industry, a visit will convince you it’s not. This is a serious event for serious manufacturers.

review S
pring temperatures came to Bavaria’s second largest city, Nürnberg, as Holz-Handwerk 2014 opened its doors alongside Fensterbau, the window trade exhibition. Perhaps unfairly, the name Holz-Handwerk hints towards affinity with the cosy end of the industry but in truth its halls were packed with some real industry heavyweights. Maka chose to showcase an eight-metre version of its endlessly adaptable five-axis PE90; Reichenbacher showed its heavyweight Vision R; among the machines on the SCM Group stand, a heavily-specified Morbidelli Author M600 was drawing serious attention; Homag City burgeoned with machines for every sector of wood and panel processing; and Weinig demonstrated to eager crowds how its heavyweight Powermat 1200 could be tamed with its new Mouldermaster software program, linking every machine in the Weinig solid wood processing stable. Not quite Handwerk as it used to be, I think you’ll agree.
So what were the highlights? Only ten months after a Ligna that positively bristled with new machines, it’s only to be expected that genuinely new technology will be at a premium. Yet, in the edgebanding sector technology seems to be moving rapidly: two years ago, laser edgebanders were the cutting edge technology for applying glueline-free mating of panel surface to edging. At Ligna, hot air systems were being introduced, cutting much of the cost out of creating the ultimate edge (Biesse launched its latest Airforce compressed hot air system during HolzHandwerk). And now, only a few months on from Ligna, Holz-Her chose Holz-Handwerk to launch its Lumina edgebanding machine with a new, modular Ltronic NIR (Near Infra-Red) system for use with either co-extruded or standard edging - and the big benefits here are no heat up time, significantly quieter operation and faster changeover.

Heesemann’s recently launched giant LSM 10 sander didn’t make it to HolzHandwerk, though Costa Levigatrici had brought several of its larger models along, clearly in the expectation that they would be seeing clients from larger companies. The sander specialist Boere showed its Select X-Line machine for scarving and texturing of wooden surfaces - and in line with the European trend for more structure and texture in surfaces, the new machine provides even more depth on solid wood but subtlety when texturing veneers as thin as 0.6mm. Although a few major hardware and décor specialist took stand space, there is no doubt Holz-Handwerk is a machinery show. And it’s a very busy one. Over 108,000 trade visitors - about 10% more than at the previous event in 2012 found their way to Nürnberg during the exhibition. There was plenty for them to see. And despite the name, it’s far from a hand craft show!

rustic wow factor With a Boere Select X-Line, the European craze for a rustic finish is easy to produce on solid wood or real wood veneers.
B
oere’s Select X-Line might look like any other wide belt sanding machine - but a sanding machine it is not. The three heads of the Select XLine are purpose-designed brushes which, by using specially formulated materials of different shapes and dimensions, can produce a range of finishes which emphasise the natural grain characteristics of the timber, making it look weathered, cross-cut and sawn. Pore structure becomes enhanced, deeper and more tactile. Even panels laminated with real wood veneers as thin as 0.6mm can be treated on the Select X-Line, though for a deeper finish, 2mm veneer is unquestionably better. The Boere Select X-Line is not a new machine. However, at Holz-Handwerk, Boere unveiled its latest brushes. Made using new materials and different bristle shapes and dimensions, their effectiveness has been enhanced significantly as the samples on this page show clearly. Designed for serious heavy duty service, Maka’s PE90, showcased at Holz-Handwerk, is a designed and built-to-order machine.
ith its eight-metre bed, Maka’s bespoke PE90 was undoubtedly one of the largest machines shown at Holz-Handwerk. Intended to showcase the German company’s prowess in machines for special applications, the monster Maka featured a 50o five-axis head with a 400mm Z axis, NC bars and pods on the bed, a turning device for flipping panels (this particular machine was designed and built for interior door manufacturing) and a horizontal chaintype toolchanger equipped with 33 tools. Developed in close co-operation with its new Austrian owner, the PE90 at HolzHandwerk signalled the start of a new era for Maka: fifteen years ago, Maka used to build its own robust and extremely efficient five-axis machining spindles but abandoned in-house manufacture some years later. The machine at Holz-Handwerk heralded the return of the Maka-built head in 12kW and 20kW options. To discuss your own custom-built Maka machine call Iain Young at Maka UK on 01952 607700.

rominently displayed on the Salvador stand at Holz-Handwerk, the Superangle 600 optimised cutting centre for angles (main picture and above right) is fast and precise. The rotating table is fixed on a high precision mechanical construction system that guarantees exact angles and it’s managed directly by an electric motor during cutting and braking. Robust, fast and safe, the Salvador Superangle’s 600mm blade and brushless servo drive motor for angle cutting make easy work of cutting angles up to 70° (120 x 100mm or 100 x 160mm). Also on the stand, the Superpush 200 (above left) is the result of 30 years’ experience. A true technological evolution of traditional cutting methods, this automatic cutting centre provides productivity increases whilst reduce staffing and improving wood yield. Like the Superangle 600, the Superpush 200 runs on Windows software: just rest the wood on the in-feed conveyor and the Superpush 200, with its 550mm blade and special 30° inclined plane facility, takes care of the rest. Cutting capacity is up to 300 x 95mm or 240 x 150mm. For details of the Salvador Superangle 600 or the Superpush 200 visit www.salvador-machines.com or call Daltons on 0115 986 5201.

n a packed stand at the HolzHandwerk exhibition, Striebig’s new high end vertical panel saw, the 4D, was drawing crowds with its renowned Swiss build quality and demonstrations of Striebig’s enhanced Touch&Saw 2.0 control. “Our new high end saw has been extremely well received in the market,” commented Marcel Brunner, Striebig’s Managing Director, from the stand. “We’ve heard a great many positive comments here in Nürnberg.” The 4D offers a complete solution for all tasks from cut optimisation to finished workpieces. The 4D is custom built and can incorporate unique features such as the optional intelligent cut optimisation, or optional expansion of cutting depth to 130mm, permitting completely new applications for vertical
sawing technology. All the saw’s functions are operated by fingertip control using a 12” touchscreen. POP technology controls the cutting sequence and optimises both the sawing procedure and material utilisation. Both panel and strip cutting are performed automatically to a tolerance of 0.1mm. Also on the stand, and catering for all vertical sawing requirements, were the Striebig Compact, Standard, Control and Evolution models. The Compact is the entry level machine. One step up is the Compact AV which features automatic forward feed (at up to 25m/min) and automatic reverse - and like all Striebig models, compared with a traditional beam saw, it has a tiny footprint. he updated Combimat, shown for the first time on the Columbus stand at Holz-Handwerk, offers all the advantages of the previous model bending of laminates, flat pressing and veneering, pre-heating and forming of thermoplastic materials, hot forming and 3D lamination - but, according to Manfred Müller, it now comes with an even better foil laminating program for improved pressing. The new program really comes into its own when pressing deeply contoured components, such as the 300mm deep bowl demonstrated by the machine on the Columbus stand. The combination of a heating unit, a forming unit and a foil laminating unit makes the space-saving Combimat a versatile and adaptable three-in-one
machine. The heating unit and heating hood (equipped with three heaters in the 2.88m x 1.28m press at HolzHandwerk) are equipped with industrial hot air convection heating which heats up very gently, preventing discolouration of sensitive materials and reducing the likelihood of materials sticking to the working surface. Fully automatic foil laminating processes equate to short cycle times and make for cost-effective production of batches or one-off bespoke workpieces. There are seven other models in the Columbus range covering most pressing tasks. For more information call Ney Ltd on 024 7630 8100 or visit the company’s website at www.ney.co.uk

he era of the seamless edge join is upon us and Ostermann’s new Airtec technology edgebands, demonstrated live at Holz-Handwerk, has to be up there with the best. Using 25 x 25cm panels and the simplest of tabletop edgebanders, Ostermann provided visitors to the show with the opportunity to experience for themselves the ease with which a seamless joint can be made - and comparing it with a laser-applied edgeband, there’s little if anything to choose between the two. ilence is golden - or more correctly infra-red on the Holz-Her stand where the new Holz-Her Lumina edgebander was making its debut. Neither a laser edgebander nor a hot air edgebander, the new Lumina utilises a cutting edge heat/light system with near laser light length. Quite apart from the fact that the Lumina has no air pressure and runs quieter than a normal edgebander, it also benefits the user by requiring no heat-up time, by offering significantly reduced power consumption and by providing the user with complete flexibility in terms of the type of edgebanding material that can be processed. Simply enter the edgeband type and the Lumina takes care of the rest automatically. But that’s only a small fraction of the technical wizardry that Holz-Her has built into the Lumina. Designed for the cabinet-maker rather than the industrial user, the Ltronic NIR unit (right) in the Lumina can be disconnected and swapped in an instant for Holz-Her’s Glu Jet system, transforming it quickly and easily into a standard edgebander. In short, it’s as happy processing standard edging materials as it is applying co-extruded edgebands - and it will work with edgings up to 45mm wide. twin lasers for br For a continuous, interruption-free finish between panel and edge, there is little to rival the quality of a laser edgeband. Always keen to stay ahead, Browns 2000 has switched from a Stefani Slim Line to the latest Stefani Laser Line technology - and bought not one but two new machines!
T
he Stefani Edgebanding machine range, supplied in the UK by SCM Group UK, is designed for medium and large-scale firms and is characterised by its precise machining operations, reliability and efficiency. Suitable for machining both traditional and contemporary edgebanding strips and rollfeed in various materials, strips and rolls of wood, and even aluminium edges, it offers a complete range of machining operations for diversified industrial production at reduced costs. Efficient production distinguishes the Stefani edgebander range as industrial machines for the most demanding of conditions. In fact, the heavy machine frame and the working units of the industrial range allow an intensive and professional use with enduring precision and reliability - guaranteed. The reach-able working speed allows high productivity with a variable infeed speed from 12 to 30 metres/min. Equipped with PC Office that ensures maximum NC management, reducing the minimum manual setting-up time and making production extremely profitable for all manufacturers.
Stefani’s are designed to be easy to use by any operator: a very good PC touch screen interface guides the operator through self-programming features according to the logic of “what” to do and not “how” to do. There’s a convenient 17” display for fast and precise choice of all of the machine’s functions and diagnostics and production reports are also included as standard. Various rollfeed magazines are available, some with automatic changeover. For trimming the applied edges, there is a wide range of operational units available including end trimming, top and bottom edge trimming, corner rounding, moulding and grooving and buffing with automatic movement of all the top units when the thickness of the panel is changed, again avoiding long set-up times. Panels of exceptional quality, without visible glue lines, can be produced with the Stefani Laser Line edgebanding technology. There are no interruptions of tone and finish between the panel and the edging, only a uniform and continuous finish between the surfaces.

browns 2000 The Stefani Laser Line technology can be used with all traditional edgebanding techniques to ensure a rapid return on investment. Laser Line can even be installed on all the Stefani modular edgebanding and squaring edgebanding machines. The latest Laser technology is becoming more popular and one of the first manufacturers in the UK to install an edgebander with this feature was leading door manufacturer, Browns 2000, based in Cramlington, Northumberland. Peter Brown, Managing Director, totally believes in Stefani's laser technology and he has recently invested in the world's very first Stefani Double-Sided first and second pass linked combination laser edgebanding line. It was delivered in November 2013 together with the Stefani “Jprofile” Soft-Forming Single-Sided edgebander for handle-less doors another exclusive solution embraced by Browns 2000. “Laser edgebanding is one of our latest investments,” says a delighted Peter Brown. “In the last fifteen years
we have spent over 70 million Euros on new machines but I was totally blown away by laser edgebanding by Stefani! It’s a wonderful gluing method, offering fantastic results, especially for high-gloss cabinet doors. We switched from an excellent Stefani ‘Slim Line’ machine, which also ensures high quality edgebanding with a virtually invisible glue line, to a laser machine. The result was so convincing that we immediately purchased a second machine and decided we can accept higher costs if we can work with excellent results at a very high speed.” Peter Brown has selected all his machines based on the very best quality available, and always with careful consideration to the company’s production. At Browns, they never make one thousand identical cabinet doors; rather, one thousand doors that are all different from one another. For more information on the Stefani range, or to discuss acquisition of one of SCM Group’s latest generation laser edgebanders, call SCM Group (UK) on 0115 977 0044 or visit the company’s website at www.scmgroup-uk.com

a licence to print Capable of printing practically anything and building texture if required, an Anderson Cojet opens up new design options which could add value to your products and open new markets.
Inkjet print heads will overprint images up to eight times to build surface depth and texture while still covering around 20sq metres per hour.
O
wning a Cojet is a bit like having a licence to print money. The Cojet, designed and made by Anderson and sold in the UK through RW Machines, is a high definition flatbed printing machine which is capable of printing practically anything from woodgrain patterns to pictures on flat panels, doors, wood, metal, ceramics and glass, concrete - even foam. The Cojet not only prints to 1440dpi with inks that are warranted UV stable for eight years, it can add texture to the surface. The inkjet heads return to overprint the image up to eight times, building a surface with real depth. And the result on a woodgrain such as oak, or other deep-pored timbers, is very convincing. “It’s the type of machine that makes people go wow!” confirms Richard Love, Managing Director of It’s All About The Image. Richard bought the first Cojet to be sold in the UK. “I want to show people what this machine can really do.” Keen to push the boundaries of KBB
design, each display in his showroom contains uniquely printed touches from splashbacks and glass-fronted kitchen cabinets to bath panels, shower screens and glazed bedroom doors, children’s doors, headboards and backdrops. Carl Tranter, Production Director at AcoustaFoam, agrees: “Everyone is a potential customer when you own an Anderson Cojet inkjet printer,” he says. Carl needed a machine that could print high-quality design onto a range of materials which included melamine foam (because of its light weight and ‘O’ fire safety rating). “We looked at several printing solutions with a view to applying customised designs but, after a demonstration of the Anderson Cojet, the search for the right machine promptly ended. Cojet ticked all the boxes.” Available through RW Woodmachines, the Cojet is fully supported for service, spares and inks by RW’s service engineers. F
elder has become something of a hit with Dartford-based Handsie Display. The installation of a new CNC Format 4 Profit H08 from Felder UK has greatly simplified manufacturing of the unique event stand designs, barrier systems, mobile bars and more for which Handsie Display has become known. Already suppliers of bespoke catering outlets to the Chelsea Flower Show, the British Open Golf Championships and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, the company is currently working on a project for the Shard - the skyscraper in London - on a champagne bar which will feature a “high gloss black finish” and is “simple, but unique and quite cosmic,” according to Steve Jewett, Assistant Manager at Handsie Display. The CNC Format 4 Profit H08 has opened up new opportunities for a company that used to outsource all its CNC work. Steve has already seen how the Profit H08 has made the whole manufacturing process much quicker, enabling the company to take on more business. The training, provided by Felder UK's CNC Product Manager
Richard Hird, also smoothed the transition from paper to production and enabled Steve and his craftsmen to be productive surprisingly quickly after commissioning of the machine. The Profit H08 from Format-4 is an ideal CNC machining centre for nesting applications in the smallest of spaces. Offering a choice of two different sized working fields, “starter” or “professional” equipment packages for maximum productivity, three vacuum systems from 180 to 500m 3 /h vacuum power and low maintenance, it’s not hard to see why this recent introduction to the Felder range has made such a hit with the Handsie Display team. Delighted with the service he’s received from Felder, Steve Jewett anticipates further expansion in the future with the CNC Format 4 Profit H08 being the latest addition to a range of Felder machines which also includes the G400 Edgebander and a Corner-Rounding machine from the Felder group. ith six Homag beam saws, CNC drilling machines, CNC routing machines and edgebanders producing around 20 tonnes in off-cuts every week, Decorpanel of Hetton-leHole needed a boiler that would enable the company to utilise its waste fully and provide heating for the whole site. With the existing system out of action and a factory that was heated with gas and electric, Decorpanel’s Ian Ling knew there had to be a more efficient and economical alternative when he invited Mawera to come up with a solution. And in the middle of 2013, Mawera, a specialist in biomass boilers and heating plants with outputs ranging from 110kW to 13,000kW, provided the solution, installing a Mawera FSR 850 Plant with flat moving grate, fully automatic de-ashing and automatic tube cleaning. Full installation of the boiler and the site heating, together with the ancillaries, took 24 weeks. Decorpanel’s Mawera FSR 850 is able to burn both MDF and laminated chipboard products efficiently and takes
care of all the company’s heating requirements. Fully automatic handling systems ensure the boiler is continuously fed with the correct amount of waste and an electrostatic filter ensures PM emissions are reduced to the minimum. Because the Renewable Heat Incentive supports the use of wood waste as a fuel, six months after installation of its new Mawera FSR 850, Decorpanel was given RHI accreditation. The new Process Guidance Note 1/12 (13) for combustion of waste wood places exceptional demands on all new installations, requiring compliance with challenging emission levels. However, according to Mawera’s John Clissett, the Guidance Note for new plant is now in line with RHI requirements and plants that qualify and have been issued with permits are now eligible to receive RHI Scheme payments. Decorpanel is set to benefit from reduced heating and waste disposal bills - as well as RHI payments. To find out how Mawera could help you get paid for heating your factory, call 01543 258844.

There was something of a buzz surrounding Ney’s spring in-house exhibition. With over 50 machines on display over three days, the showroom was a hive of activity with several new additions to its portfolio. Gerd Ney, Managing Director, adds, “Our in-house exhibition has proved to be a fantastic platform for us to showcase our comprehensive range of products. Visitors were the first to see new developments from the likes of Cehisa, EBM, OMC and Cosmec, as we continue to build our portfolio and maintain our reputation as a single source supplier.”
The new OMC Proform press has been designed for high-volume door production. Offering a patented automatic pin system and laser sensor mapping, it boasts a pressure of 372-tons to create a perfectly formed, high quality finish.
Above. The EBM KDP 400 made its first public appearance at Ligna last year. The hot melt edgebander, which is one of the most cost effective machines on the market with a corner-rounding station, has a fully automatic board transportation system with a feed speed of 8.5m/min. Designed with a pre-milling and glue station, buffing wheel and surface scraper, it will work with panels of 10mm-40mm thick and edging from 0.4mm-2mm thick. A userfriendly PLC control for simple programming is also available.
Above. The Cehisa Compact PCS, whilst small in size at only 3050 x 870 x 1500mm, includes many of the standard features featured on Cehisa's high-end models. Made exclusively for Ney, the PCS offers an automatic feed unit which can cut up to 3mm PVC edging. It can also manually feed solid wood strips up to 5mm thick. Thanks to its high frequency motor and horizontal and vertical tracers, the PCS is suitable for corner rounding and to limit downtime, a new quick-change glue tank unit allows for installation in less than one minute. The small machine boasts the same drag chain as the Pro and System series and includes a glue scraper and buffing unit to aid a perfect finish as standard. It also includes a 3.5” touch-screen control unit that can create up to 20 work programs.
Left. The younger sister of the Paoloni P45 sliding table panel saw, the new Q45 offers precision engineering at an affordable price point. Externally the P45 and the Q45 are similar. However, the beam under the carriage is from the S300 model and the goniometer, fence and eccentric clamps have been omitted to provide an altogether more economically priced machine.

ombilift’s first pedestrian reach truck, the new multidirectional forklift Combi-WR4, won the Ergonomics Award from the UK Fork Lift Truck Association (FLTA) who praised “Combilift’s drive to keep fork lift operators comfortable and safe, while achieving the highest levels of productivity and efficiency.” The first purpose-built 4-way pedestrian stacker has a lift height of 4.2m and a load capacity of 1,450kg and can work in aisle-widths as narrow as 2.1m pallet to pallet. It features pantograph reach, side shift and tilting fork carriage for handling long loads and pallets. It is easy and effortless to operate thanks to its unique patented multi-position tiller, electronic power steering and fingertip controls, reducing the need for leaning, reaching and bending in addition to minimising general manual strain when picking and placing loads. Safety is increased together with enhanced visibility as the operator remains at the side of the truck rather than between the rear of the truck and racking. Martin McVicar, Comblift MD, explained that the company’s smallest model to date was the result of customer feedback for compact and cost-effective machines in very confined areas. Call Combilift on 07870 976758 or visit www.combilft.com to find out more about the Combi-WR4.

more from your saw By using Leitz Tooling’s sharpening service, CJ Kitchens reduced their sharpening from five blade sets a week to one set in four weeks.
“W
Above. Remember the 1960s ambulance-tocampervan episode of Channel 4’s “George Clarke's Amazing Spaces”? Specialising in carcases, CJ Kitchens was a contractor.
e tried everything to fix what we thought was an issue with our beam saw,” explained Neil Wade, owner of CJ Kitchens in Cambridgeshire. “We had a real problem: the MFC kept chipping and we were sending five sets of beam saw blades out for sharpening every week. The rectification and board trimming alone was taking up serious time - time we needed to do the work coming through. We had six sets of blades for the beam saw but were always running out.” CJ’s saw service returned the blades sharpened and wax-coated but the MFC would still chip and the edges on the blades would not last. A dismayed Neil set about trying to resolve the problem and eventually found the answer when Leitz Tooling visited his workshop. “It was a very helpful visit,” recalls Neil. “They looked at what we were producing and how we did it and took away a couple of blades for sharpening. Once the first one was back on the beam saw, we didn't change it for four weeks and the MFC cut more smoothly than we'd ever seen.” CJ Kitchens cuts around nine sheets of 2.8m x 2070mm x 18mm MFC every day. Suddenly, from sending five sets of
beam saw blades every week for sharpening, they went down to one set every three to four weeks - all by using the sharpening service from Leitz. Soon after, Neil decided to invest in Leitz Razor-cut saw blades. “Some of the slightly cheaper MFC used to chip badly and the time needed to rectify the work and check and even replace the saw blades wiped out any marginal cost saving on the product,” recalls Neil. “We are finding that by using Leitz saw blades and servicing, our work is a whole lot easier.” Brian Maddox, Leitz Tooling’s Sales Manager, is adamant Razor-Cut saw blades are among the best available. “A trial with our saw blades can make a huge difference in downtime and setting time, duration and quality,” he says. “Like CJ Kitchens, we want more manufacturers to talk to us about what we can do to transform their production lines. The time and cost saving potential in downtime is huge, particularly when combined with our expert sharpening services.” For more information on the Leitz Razor-Cut range of saw blades, or to take advantage of Leitz Tooling’s cutting service, call 01279 454530 or visit http://shopuk.leitz.uk

The fh3 saw from Schelling.
X-ray doors made by Noberne Doors.

Noberne Doors Ltd supplies bespoke, high performance fire doors, acoustic doors, external thermal rated doors, bullet resistant doors and even x-ray doors (pictured below left). Founded nearly 40 years ago as a manufacturer of timber doors, Noberne Doors recently needed to choose a new compact saw to fit their limited factory space, but without a loss in build quality, capacity and travel speed. The fh3 cut-to-size saw from Schelling was the answer, combining high technology in a compact size. The fh3 also has the advantage of an automatic short stroke pressure beam which only lifts and lowers as far as the actual book height requires, leading to faster cycle times when cutting material. This suited Noberne Doors as, due to their working shift patterns, it was important to get as much cutting as possible completed during a shift. The production output is further increased by the automatic feature which adjusts the saw height projection to the optimal cutting height after detecting the material book height. Swiftly meeting specific customer demands (such as varying sizes, widths and finishes), the fh3 can process a wide variety of timber materials using a 14kW motor that has the capacity for both small batch production and fast throughput of larger orders. Schelling offers more options to suit individual requirements. These include grooving, window cutting and an angle cut option. The viewing window in the pressure beam cover offers good visibility when cutting and, meeting Noberne Doors’ needs, there is the format device that allows for cutting material with surface overhang around the panel. This guarantees precise machining of projecting surface veneers. Overall, Trevor Watson, Production Manager at Noberne Doors, is pleased with Schelling, saying that the fh3 has delivered on all counts - a compact saw, able to achieve their production targets, without compromise. At a lower cost, the fh3 saw retains all the excellence of precision and cutting performance you expect from a Schelling machine. Schelling UK Ltd 01937 586340 info@schelling.co.uk
