One of the biggest furniture manufacturers in China, the Trayton Group, has chosen products from Lectra to help them use technology to reduce costs. The Trayton Group deals primarily with leather goods and 90% of its total production is destined for export - for the majority of its customers it provides designs for their selection, but it also produces designs that it receives from original equipment manufacturers as well as manufacturing and exporting finished products. Lectra supplied the Versalis® and Vector® packages together with product development, pattern-making and nesting software. Consultants from Lectra then worked closely with the company to pinpoint and prioritise the Group’s needs, looking at processes and working methods. The Trayton Group has already identified increased automation of its operation to reduce costs and Lectra made further recommendations on optimising the entire production chain, from pattern making to cutting. Regular meetings were held with the Trayton Group’s service team to ensure the actual implementation went smoothly with minimum disruption to production.

For Salvador, a great Xylexpo 2014 was rounded off with the win of first prize in the category of Communications in the XIA-Xylexpo Innovation Awards, as judged by visiting journalists. Christian Salvador (shown left, receiving the award from the Presidents of Eumabois, of the fair and of Acimall) said that the ‘Salvador spirit’ was “the instinctive ability to approach all the communication tools in an emotional, personal, involving and direct approach; a capacity that does not get exhausted in the promotion campaigns, but accompanies every action of the company”. Meeting people matters very much to Salvador and he was pleased with the stream of visitors to the Salvador stand at the exhibition in terms of both numbers and nationalities. He added that “if the pace of sales and orders were to remain at these levels, then 2014 could be our new ‘record year’”. The Superpush 200, Supercut 500 and Superangle 600 were all on display in Milan showing the success of the range of Salvador’s optimising saws and cross-cut saws to interpret and satisfy the needs of the users.

The integration process between the Süddekor Group and Surteco SE continues with the decision that decorative printing activities will in future be concentrated at the Buttenwiesen location. Süddekor, part of Surteco SE since the end of 2013, will see the printing division and laboratory facilities relocated from Laichingen to Buttenwiesen. The varnishing (film) business belonging to Süddekor will remain in Laichingen. Similarly, Dakor Melaminimprägnierungen GmbH is unaffected and stays at its current location. Friedheim Päfgen, a member of Surteco SE’s management board, explained that “having standardised the sales structure following the takeover of Süddekor, the focus is now on optimising our production network”. The concentration on one location will deliver noticeable improvements for customers who, as a result of the consolidation of sales organisations under the Surteco Decor group logo, have been attended to by a single source. With the alignment of painting, engraving and printing standards the speed of delivery and flexibility will be improved and a new level of high quality will be achieved. Dr Jürgen Dambrowski and Dr Steffen Griffel, members of the SGE Papier’s management team, will be leaving the company, “passing on the reins as planned, now that Süddekor has been put into good hands”.

“Sicam is a very international fair. It is very well organised; a very professional event. Everything is prepared well both for exhibitors and visitors.” Tobias Lorenz, Süddekor, 2013.

Sicam is an easy exhibition on the feet with everything close at hand, yet the spread of products and the countries from which the exhibitors travel grows with each edition.

“It [Sicam 2013] has been a very strong fair for us. We don’t usually write orders at a fair but there has been a lot of interest.” Michael Pohl, Union Knopf, 2013.

icam will take place at the Pordenone Trade Fair from Tuesday 14th to Friday 17th October 2014. A unique format, it is always recognised as a vital marketing tool by companies of the components and accessories sectors operating on global furniture and furnishings markets. Sicam has a top level, comprehensive exhibitor base with over 85% of those present at the 2013 edition returning in 2014, including all the leading international players from each sector. Searching for emerging markets is Sicam’s mission. Exhibitors from new countries are already set to visit Pordenone in October 2014, expanding the already broad range of nations represented (94 countries from all five continents last year). This year, Sicam has an impressive schedule with exhibitors from Tehran and Las Vegas,

Bangalore in India, along with Dubai, Indonesia, and Brazil. The aim is to increase the 35% of foreign exhibitors recorded at the last event. “It is understandable that it is especially decision makers of the highest levels who choose this trade fair to develop their company business,” says Carlo Giobbi, the organiser of Sicam. “These are people whose time is precious and who cannot afford to waste it. They come to Sicam because they know they can get the utmost efficiency from the time they dedicate to their visit to the trade fair.” Hotels in Pordenone sell out quickly so booking early is strongly recommended. For further information on the exhibition visit the Sicam website at www.sicam.com and see the interactive exhibitor list for the 2014 exhibition at www.exposicam.it/english

t was 1989 when Schelling UK first opened its doors,” recalled Wolfgang Rohner, speaking at the grand opening of Schelling UK’s new facility in Wetherby on the subsidiary’s 25th anniversary. Wolfgang, who is the Managing Partner of Schelling Anlagenbau GmbH, had flown in specially from Austria with Managing Director Stefan Hinterholzer to perform the opening ceremony and unveil a commemorative plaque. “It was our second daughter company,” he continued. “We now have eight daughter companies. We are especially optimistic about the UK and we have given Markus a place to create something special.”

Schelling’s owner and top manager fly in from Austria to open Schelling UK’s new showroom, workshop and offices.

The Austrian sizing specialist’s foray into the UK began with three engineers and a small base a few hundred metres from the new 22,000ft 2 Osborne House facility. Today, Schelling UK Ltd, under the leadership of Managing Director Markus Freuis, employs eight engineers and four support staff in its offices - and it offers a lot more than the supremely engineered beam saws and angle plant for which the Austrian company has become well known. “There is a strong demand for second-hand machines,” said Markus, whose determination to cater for the widest possible customer demand led to the opening of a workshop for the

Whatever your sizing requirement, new or pre-owned, Schelling UK will build a saw that has all the features you need to fulfil the task you want it to perform - including features such as board turning (top, inset) and label printing (inset) if you need them. Underwritten by Schelling’s legendary build quality, you can be sure of a tireless, reliable and consistent performer.

refurbishment of pre-owned Schelling saws in nearby Sherburn-in-Elmet four years ago. “But we needed somewhere we could show several second-hand machines alongside our new models. We bought Osborne House because it provides us with a large showroom where we can demonstrate new and used machines, a training room and a substantial workshop with the space to overhaul, test and refurbish secondhand machines.” There are many advantages to acquiring a pre-owned machine, as Markus was keen to point out: “We don’t just replace worn parts and make the machines look new, we can fit new control systems and bring older machines up to modern specifications.” That includes converting machines which have seen lengthy service in the metal or plastics industry into machinery that’s suitable for wood-based panel processing. Markus acknowledges metalworking machines are usually slower but they offer greater accuracy. “We’re effectively offering today’s technology at yesterday’s price,” he added. Demand for pre-owned machines is booming, especially since the recession came to a close, and the build quality of Schelling saws make them especially desirable in a number of sectors. In the workshop awaiting refurbishment was a 1984 model Smid beam saw that its

owners had replaced with a new Schelling FM8. It had already been snapped up by an overseas buyer. A more recent Schelling saw was awaiting refurbishment. “Two companies are interested in this machine,” commented Markus. “Another is going to a customer in Dubai and another is all but sold. Our aim at the beginning of the year was to refurbish and sell five new machines in 2014 but between January and April we’d already sold nine. We have a waiting list of people who want second-hand Schellings.” From Osborne House, Schelling UK will sell new and used sizing equipment alongside handling equipment and extraction technology. The new facility has also enabled Markus and his team to ensure a stock of £80-100,000-worth of machine parts and consumables is maintained to cover most eventualities. Anything not in stock will continue to be shipped on overnight delivery direct from Austria. But as Eric Simpson (right), a customer with two Schelling saws, found out when he dropped in with an urgent need for parts just as the 25-year celebrations were reaching full swing, many items are available off the shelf. To find out more, or to attend the customer anniversary celebrations on 18th or 19th September 2014, contact Schelling UK on 01937 586340.

“If Schelling was a football team, they’d be top division. Everyone at Schelling gives really first rate service. I’ve two Schelling saws.” Eric Simpson from Cleckheaton dropped by on the day of the official 25th anniversary celebration of Schelling UK and took the parts he needed with him - straight off the shelf. Main picture, above. The new workshop is spacious - sufficiently so for Schelling UK to be confident they can deliver fully reconditioned and upgraded, pre-owned saws that will perform even better than the day they left the factory in Austria.

eople like to make their important purchases dealing personally with other people. Furniture and joinery manufacturing is about creating value from basic materials. Bring these two facts together and the importance of W14, the national UK exhibition, is quickly apparent. Past attendees to the show know well what the exhibition delivers. Moving around the aisles of three NEC halls visitors will see manufacturers fully engaged in discussions with suppliers bringing machinery, materials and components from across the world, eager to meet UK customers. This is not an event at which visitors wander round and dream of what might be. At W14 people can try a product. Compare it. And then buy it. Because W14 exhibitors know this they bring machinery which actually runs, materials which can be handled and discussed in a myriad of forms and components which are so much more understandable when you can see and feel them.

The key element however is people. Years of experience combine with up to the minute product knowledge to the benefit of the visiting manufacturer. Instant free consultancy is available on every stand and it is clearly these benefits of close up demonstration which makes this exhibition special. More than ever the industry today is about partnerships and collaboration. Machinery suppliers can work alongside people bringing new materials and components suppliers need to understand the design elements which appeal to the UK customer. All of these involve working and talking with the manufacturer. So, amongst exhibitions, W14 is rather special. Not just because it’s the only UK exhibition dedicated to the joinery and furniture manufacturing industries - but because it’s primarily about person to person contact, with both parties sharing an enthusiasm for the products at the core of the UK industry. The signs are very good for W14 this autumn with the halls already virtually

full of exhibitors. Many exhibitors are now looking for ways of extending their space against a strong economic backdrop. For example, Isaac Lord has just doubled its show presence - profiling a new look and over 30,000 product lines. Paul Mills, E-Commerce manager at Isaac Lord, is clear that combining meetings at the show with their online presence is a vital part of Isaac Lord’s strategy. Paul’s comments typify how many marketconscious suppliers are realising that the W14 audience wants to see machinery, materials and components in the single show - and are determined to use the opportunity to meet their customers face to face. Paul Mills says, “A new beginning at Isaac Lord - Isaac Lord have seen some big changes in the last few years. We have new ownership, a new operating system, a new website and a keen eye on what is new in the market place.” Positioned next to Blum at the show, Isaac Lord have been one of their leading national distributors for three decades. “Following feedback from our customers and suppliers Isaac Lord has doubled its stand size at the show to profile more of the 30,000+ products stocked and available for next-day delivery nationwide. As distributors focus on the timber industry, Isaac Lord will have something that will interest every visitor to the show. “There will be people coming to the show looking at making a one-off big investment, but we deal with our customers on a daily basis supplying kitchen fittings, cabinet fittings hardware and tools and know the people in the workshops by name. It will be great to put faces to more of those names and meet some new ones too. “The collaboration of W14 with Timber Expo is exciting as it offers another link in the chain, showing the raw material through machinery then assembly using fixtures and fittings supplied by Isaac Lord.” Paul continues, ”Isaac Lord is working closely with some key suppliers at the show including BLUM, Mirka and Festool and will have exciting demonstrations from the innovative and productivity enhancing scribing jig from ProScribe on our stand along with exclusive show offers. “You will be able to place orders at the show for next-day delivery. We will also be demonstrating our new website with innovative features to simplify the ordering process. We will be profiling products at W14 that will save the customer time and give a superior end result making the job more cost efficient. Come and see us.” W14 provides a treat for UK manufacturers. CompacMel, the wood-based compact.

nvironmental and cost are the main advantages and benefits to Compac-Mel Plus,” says Emma LanfearWright, Laminates Product Manager at Lawcriss, the exclusive UK distributor of Finsa’s CompacMel. “What customers look for when buying CompacMel Plus is a product which is competitively priced, easy to machine but at the same time is durable and sustainable.” CompacMel Plus is available with an FSC certificate and with a low carbon footprint. At the same time, it offers an all-round cost saving from the cost of the material right through to the manufacturing and fixtures of the board. CompacMel Plus is a solution in wood, specially designed for use in high humidity indoor environments, or for applications requiring high resistance. It is a high density wooden fibreboard with excellent mechanical properties which offers high strength and an attractive melamine coating. Some experts in the industry reckon that two

out of every three projects involving compact laminate could be made more easily with CompacMel Plus, with no loss of benefits but with a clear cost advantage. This could translate into significant savings for manufacturers on many projects and might even prove to be the crucial difference between losing and winning a tender. According to Emma, CompacMel Plus is “an extremely cost-effective alternative to the solid laminate used in many public usage and contract situations”. CompacMel Plus provides high tensile strength, bending strength and elasticity as well as high impact resistance. All these are key features of a product for use in an environment where persistent high humidity is encountered. At the same time, Emma maintains CompacMel Plus machines as easily as other wood-based composites and has another advantage in that it is not nearly so abrasive as solid grade laminate. In short, you can expect

wo of James Latham’s latest additions to their surfaces solutions portfolio - Mirror Gloss and Natural Touch - both part of the innovative and ‘on-trend’ Kronodesign range - are already generating massive interest from within the A&D sector. Mirror Gloss, which pushes the boundaries of depth and definition, colour and reflective gloss, is produced using first class particleboard and high quality melamine film, achieving a gloss level of 140 points for decorative use in the furniture industry and interior design. The new range comprises 20 highly durable, scratch resistant, light and colourfast décors that include 14 sparkling gloss colours, four wood grains and two fantasy décors. Another product from the Kronodesign range, Natural Touch is an ‘embossed-in-register’ melamine board where the grain texture precisely matches the surface finish. A

s always, the Salone Internazionale del Mobile provided a plethora of new ideas but it’s becoming increasingly difficult to spot a single, dominating trend. The theme to this year’s event is probably best summed up as mix and match with no single trend dominating. Instead, variation was on view everywhere: striking surfaces in stone sat comfortably alongside plaingrain wood, with brass, gold, copper, bronze and concrete putting in a new appearance. Cubic elements contrasted with organic shapes, and large-scale solid-colour areas were juxtaposed with wood of various types. The woodgrains were particularly noticeable with surfaces ranging from high-gloss

polished to scraped, wire-brushed and sun-bleached.” For Schattdecor’s designers, the highlight of this year's Milan Furniture Show was the moooi show space: “A real insider's tip in the off-side Zona Tortona district,” says Steffi. “Here, giant photographs of an old library and palatial, ecclesiastical and weathered rooms formed the backdrop for furniture exhibits and accessories which had been arranged lovingly as foreground details, spiriting visitors away into a charming, intimate atmosphere as if by magic.” With such a strong influence, we can only imagine how Schattdecor’s designers might begin to interpret this idea. very manufacturer knows the importance of using high-quality consumables but when it comes to choosing your edging, what is important to you? Does price dominate your decision or does the assurance of rigorous expert testing, greater production quality and the promise of a perfect finish score highly on your wish list? Or is the importance of a dependable supplier that can guarantee over 10-million linear metres of in-stock edging, ready for next-day delivery a key factor? If your answer is ‘all of the above’, then Ney’s laser edging is certainly worth a closer look. Designed to create a seamless joint, Ney's laser edging is coated at the time of manufacturing to guarantee a perfect colour match with no visible glue line. By replacing the conventional glue, an edgebander with Laser, Hot Air or Plasma technology can be used to bond the edge and board together flawlessly. Manufactured from Polypropylene, Ney’s laser edging has been created to

withstand the harshest environmental conditions. Able to endure temperatures of -20 to +75oC, testing has also seen edged doors and carcasses submerged into water and used in rooms with an 85% moisture level to ensure the highest heat, water and moisture resistance possible. Available for next-day delivery in 13 colours (including white, cream and black) Ney is set to extend its range later this year to reflect new and existing trends. A speedy quotation service and a minimum order quantity of only 50 metres is also available ideal for the smaller manufacturer. Gerd Ney, Managing Director of Ney Ltd adds, “This is a new age for furniture manufacturing. the perfect pet H

igh gloss surfaces with a real mirror effect are big sellers with consumers but achieving the perfect finish can be fraut with problems. Kleiberit’s HotCoating® process is well established as a means of ‘glassing’ an otherwise non-gloss finish. By laminating a transparent polyester (PET) film onto a substrate coated with decorative paper, it’s possible to achieve a a gloss with additional depth and eliminate many of the production problems associated with laminating high gloss films. The adhesive used for laminating the PET film must remain transparent to achieve maximum depth effect and it’s here that Kleiberit’s solutions - Kleiberit PUR HM 710.1 and Kleiberit PUR SK 711.1 - stand out. Application can be with a roller coater or a wide slot nozzle. Kleiberit says optimal transparency during flat lamination with a roller

coater is achieved with Kleiberit HM 710.1 while Kleiberit PUR SK 711.1 has been formulated for use with a wide slot nozzle in a laminating system for rolled materials. Kleiberit maintains both products are established as a long-term and reliable solution for bonding film to substrate and are transparent, therefore complex and time-consuming startups/testing can be omitted in most cases. Kleiberit will undertake pretesting in its Technical Centre using original materials on industrial lines in your presence if required. Both adhesives are universal in use and can be used for bonding satin matte films or non-transparent, shiny or non-shiny decorative films, eliminating the need to time-consuming adhesive changes. For more information call 01530 836699 or visit www.kleiberit.com

Kleiberit offers two high performance adhesives for bonding high gloss PET transparent films to substrates - and both can be used successfully with other decorative films.

n for formance Confidence is high at Fen UK. From purpose-built premises the company provides production solutions and consumables, specialising in edgebanding, drilling, insertion and assembly.

F

elix Ney talks enthusiastically about the machines and the products his company, Derby-based Fen UK, provides and supports. There’s a real passion about the way he effervesces over the features on the machines he sells and it’s clear he enjoys supreme performance and the precision that comes from a well-engineered product. Operating out of brand new, purpose-built premises that Fen UK acquired a little over a year ago, Felix and his dedicated team provide production solutions from the edgebander specialist Paul Ott, drilling and insertion machines as well as carcase presses from Gannomat, veneer and hydraulic presses from Italpresse and edgebanders for the smaller workshop from the family-owned Italian company Bi-Matic. Complementing these, the company also provides associated consumables such as cleaning products for edgebanders and anti-static products for panel cleaning from LCM as well as adhesives from Kleiberit.

Talk to Felix about Ott edgebanders and his face lights up. “The Ott system is totally different,” he says, enthusiastically. “Ott has had a zero glue line for more than 11 years. Nowadays, we can’t imagine life without it. Ott’s patented Combimelt system makes it possible to achieve a zero glue line without lasers and there’s no need to use special co-extruded edgebands. Just use whichever edgebands you normally use. An Ott edgebander will run at speeds of up to 20m/min, there are no setup issues and no special programming for different thicknesses. An Ott is a very simple machine to use.” The Ott range consists of the entry level Tornado Plus, the Twister, the Quattro Line, the Storm, the Strong Edge and the top-of-the-line Top Edge. “All Ott machines are fast and offer low running costs,” says Felix. “They’re very consistent in the finish they provide and they offer easy changeover from one product to another. We’re setting sales records for Ott because of this.”

The Austrian designed and built Gannomat Index 130 (this picture and middle left) is a precision drilling and inserting machine for those who demand absolute accuracy. “Hundreds have been sold in the UK.”

Below. Fen UK also supplies consumables such as cleaning fluids and adhesives for edgebanding.

When it comes to precision drilling and assembly, Felix is confident there is little to beat the well-proven machines manufactured by the Austrian company Gannomat. “Gannomat was making boring machines over 60 years ago,” he says. “They have unparalleled experience in this sector. Hundreds of CNC controlled Gannomat Index 130 machines have been sold in the UK. Referencing is perfect every time, making assembly really easy.” Like the Protec (the modern equivalent of a multiborer), set up times and maintenance are very low. It’s very much a theme with Gannomat: “Most carcase presses tend to be awkward to set up so they are better suited to volume work,” says Felix. “A Gannomat gives a square cabinet in an efficient time frame with quick changeover for just-in-time production.” A huge smile spreads over his face as he

begins to describe the rigid frame, the precision engineering and the build quality “for which Gannomat is famous”. Under Felix’s direction, Fen UK has paid great attention to offering welldesigned and engineered machines and doing everything possible to help customers overcome production issues expediently and cost-effectively. “We work with clients to ensure a perfect match between task and product, tailoring packages and offering excellent support after installation,” says Felix. “Service is the key to ensuring customer satisfaction. We have our own factorytrained engineers - a real expert team. But don’t ask us how good our service is,” he adds, confidence written all over his face, “Ask our customers.” To find more out about what Fen UK can do for your business talk to Felix on 01332 516557 or visit www.fenuk.com

Investing in a Felder Format 4 Profit H22 has enabled a small family cabinet-making firm to increase its own productivity and diversify and capitalise on a new opportunity.

“unbelievable” profit P

eter Norris and Son is a specialist designer and manufacturer of kitchens, bedrooms, offices and bespoke furniture. Cabinet makers since 1982, Peter and his son, Jon, are also authorised fabricators of materials such as Corian, Hi-Macs and Staron Solid Surfaces. Producing small batches of orders to individual designs is their speciality and to do this they have equipped the company with a Profit H22 CNC Machining Centre from Felder UK. With its high efficiency and high flexibility, the Profit H22 is designed to offer flexibility to manufacturers of doors, windows, stairs and solid wood furniture for a modest investment. A CNC machining centre from Felder’s Format 4 range, the Profit H22 is an extremely flexible machine which optimises both standard production and design-focused nonstandard work. “It is unbelievable what the machine enables us to achieve,” says a delighted Peter Norris. “The Profit H22 is the best thing since sliced bread!” Before taking delivery of the new machine, Peter reports they were on the point of turning work away which could not be completed within customers’ deadlines but now they are “sailing through the work”. The speed and accuracy of the Felder CNC has not only increased productivity of their own designs, it’s enabled them to start manufacturing cabinets and doors for other local

kitchen companies. Trading under the name Cheshire CNC, they now perform CNC work for third parties who do not have a CNC machine of their own. Jon recalls enthusiastically how they were able to make components from simple drawings for one customer who approached them recently. In the past, this task would have taken many hours. Manufacturing everything from a simple circle to highly complex shapes and other time consuming tasks is something that now comes easily to Peter and Jon - and, entirely because of the Profit H22, they’ve diversified and capitalised on new opportunities. “The machine’s positioning accuracy gives the products the finishing touches other machines in our workshop cannot achieve,” says Jon and, adds Peter, “The Profit H22 cannot be faulted.” Peter and Jon are just as delighted with the service they’ve received from Felder UK: “Felder listened to what we wanted and let us decide things in our own time,” says Peter. “We are very happy with Felder and the honest, calm approach they take. The machine is more than paying for itself and what makes everything even better, is that Felder is only a phone call away.” To find out how a Profit CNC H22 could benefit your workshop visit www.felder-group.co.uk or call 01908 635000.

The fully automatic machine, which has long been considered the German manufacturer’s flagship model, is the first Edgebander in the range to include EBM’s first zero glue line solution, Airtronic. Designed exclusively for woodworking machinery and consumables supplier, Ney Ltd, the Airtronic system (which can also be added to the KDP 114 SLK-P, KDP 115 SLK-P and KDB 116 SLK-P models) eradicates unwanted glue lines, creating a perfect transition from edgeband to panel and providing a hygienic, seamless join. Gerd Ney, Managing Director of Ney explains, “The new system will apply premium-coated edging materials up to 3mm thick and, whilst it’s compatible with hot-melt glues, laser edges and PUR, it doesn't come with the hefty

price tag often associated with its laser counterparts. “Whilst the technology behind the design is complex, the concept is simple,” explains Gerd. “The machine heats compressed air through a fanequipped heater until it reaches its operational temperature. It then irradiates through a nozzle to the inside of the premium-coated edge. It is this process which creates a perfectly seamless edge that is highly heat, moisture and water resistant.” With a heat-up time of just three minutes, the parameters of temperature, air pressure and speed are optimised for ease of use but can be changed and saved via a touch screen console to work with different edging materials. All machines in the range feature an extendable panel support to provide stability to large panels during processing and can be specified with a touch screen controller offering the

uality operator the use of 32 pre-defined programmes as well as a full diagnostic. The flagship KDP 117 SLK-P is the most comprehensively equipped edgebander in the EBM 110 range and includes premilling and infeed stations, end trimming, top and bottom rough trim, top and bottom radius trim, corner rounding, edge scraping, glue scraping and buffing. It will work with components which have a minimum size of just 220mm and will apply edging materials of up to 3mm thick. The addition of the Airtronic system brings increased productivity and production quality. Gerd adds, “The EBM Airtronic system is a welcome addition to Ney’s woodworking machinery range and, with our new range of zero glue line edging available in stock for next-day delivery, Ney will always be a dependable partner for you to rely on.” For more information, or to arrange a demonstration, call 024 76 308100 or visit www.ney.co.uk

20 kitchens a day, 30 different models, thousands of different elements to be selected from warehouses, machined, prepared, assembled, packaged and stocked together... In Stosa’s warehouse, this seemingly humongous task is managed efficiently by using an automated system from Cassioli. One of the leading Italian kitchen manufacturers, Stosa chose the innovative FAST system by Cassioli because it completely overcomes the need for stacking objects on pallets and successively singling them out. The FAST system allows for handling many object sets simultaneously (differing in shape, weight and size), when storing and retrieving, thus drastically reducing total rack feeder workload. The warehouse at Stosa is connected to serving lines integrated with the shipment and production areas. The input line’s task is to transport packages differing in size, weight and shape to the automated area, which in turn processes the customer orders. A high performance shuttle, sheet conveyors and automated, semi-constrained-drive carts in the output line transfer goods which have already been assigned to customers from the interoperable warehouse to the truck loading area. The distinctive feature of the FAST system is that it performs faster picking by automatically grouping packages by typology, not by customer. The task of reordering packages by work order is subsequently processed to Cassioli's software system. Diamond Phoenix Automation is the sole agent for Cassioli in the UK and Ireland. Vertical CNC processing from a machine with a 5m2 footprint: that’s Holz-Her’s new Evolution 7405.

holz-her evolution Holz-Her goes vertical with its latest Evolution range of CNC machining centres, launched at Holz-Handwerk.

H Profiling on all four edges is no problem for the HolzHer Evolution 7405 - and with the 6.5kW HSK spindle upgrade it will mill profiles, point thin and engrave with full automatic tool-changing.

olz-Handwerk saw the launch of a new range of vertical CNC machining centre solutions from Holz-Her. The Holz-Her Evolution 7405 has a footprint of 5m2, an easy to use interface and a patent pending 4sided milling facility, making it versatile and flexible. A specialty of this new vertical Holz-Her CNC machine is the capability of machining cambered parts such as furniture fronts and counter tops. Precise edge routing on all four edges of a panel means panels can be formatted completely, resulting in perfectly machined, grooved components which have been profiled on all edges (patent pending). By upgrading to a 6.5kW HSK spindle with tool changer for 6 tools, the machine will mill profiles, point thin and engrave with automatic tool changing. The patent-pending vacuum-based clamping system is gentle on material. Equipped with software-controlled suction cup positioning with hole recognition, the Evolution 7405

enables workpieces with lengths of up to 1,300mm to be machined on all sides without re-clamping. This guarantees extremely short cycle times and maximum precision even on long parts. Included as standard is the latest version of Campus/NCHops software for programming. DXF/DWG drawings can be imported with ease. Built with sturdy machine columns and high quality components, the Evolution line offers standard machining dimensions of 3,500mm in the X axis and 920 mm in the Y axis, with absolute accuracy and workpiece quality. The fully automatic workpiece adaptation allows material thicknesses from 8-70mm to be processed without any set-up. Even small workpieces are no problem: parts with dimensions of only 200 x 70mm can be clamped easily. Despite the capability of the Evolution 7405, it requires surprisingly little space. A new fan-set blade design has helped Dustraction win the noise-sensitive contract for the workshops of Pinewood Studios.

hink of Pinewood studios and what springs immediately to mind? Carry-On films, Bond films, The Italian Job...? The new comedy Absolutely Anything, with Robin Williams, Kate Beckinsale and the voices of the Monty Python team? All are probable. Dustraction? That’s less likely - unless you’re one of the craftsmen making the film sets for the next blockbuster. Manufacturing in wood and woodbased panels for the film sets of movies is a major part of the work at Pinewood Studios - but it’s a job that has to be carried out with as little noise as possible because filming is always going on somewhere. Tasked with reducing the sound of dust extraction and disposal, Steve Matuska and the Dustraction team set about designing a system using the very latest filters and fans, locating them indoors and partitioning them inside a dedicated new plant room. The new installation contains several fans and duct

The sounds of waste extraction at Pinewood Studios are now housed in a dedicated Plant Room where redesigned fan-sets operate at higher pressure and at lower noise output.

mains, each serving a separate area of the shop floor in a layout that enables individual areas to be shut down when not in use. That provides Pinewood with appreciable savings in power consumption as well as noise. Work done by Dustraction’s R&D team in the drawing office at Oadby has resulted in a new generation of rugged wood-waste handling fan-sets that retain the self-cleaning characteristics of the old paddle-blade styles but which can also operate at much higher pressures with increased efficiency. Focussing on impeller noise generated by the traditional paddle-blade style of fan-set has resulted in a new blade design with increased efficiency and lower noise. It proved to be key to winning the Pinewood contract. The new cyclofilters are Dustrax 5s which between them handle a total air volume of 11.3m3/sec. This represents a spare volume capacity of almost 50% for the

future, which Pinewood’s workshop manager, Jonathan Ash, says may be needed sooner rather than later. At Pinewood, Dustraction has now installed two new indoor cyclo-filter systems together with a number of fansets. One cyclofilter handles clean wood and the other plastics and nonrecyclables. Each plant discharges to externally mounted skips via closed loop cyclones. The filter sleeves of Pinewood’s new reverse pulse cleaning systems generate good cake-waste release without significant cloth movement and meet continuous use requirements. Duct mains are run out of the new plant shop to external waste skips. The contract overall carried a completion clause for the end of May 2014, which Dustraction has met, prior to commencement of filming for the new Star Wars series.
