Britain’s furniture and woodworking sectors are buoyant again - and the proof was to be seen on the stands at W14.

T

here is no better barometer of the British furniture and woodworking sectors than the W-series of exhibitions and from the moment the Birmingham W14 exhibition opened its doors on 5th October until the moment they closed on 8th, the needle continued pushing into record highs. Never in 22 years of attending exhibitions can I recall an exhibition of woodworking machinery, materials and components at which stand after stand was chalking up sales and breaking sales records with quite such regularity. Homag reported orders of £2.25 million from the stand. Masterwood reported enquiries totalling £3 million. SCM reported sales of almost every type of machine with some selling half a dozen or more. Striebig sold eight vertical panel saws from W14. And by the end of the first day alone, Felder had sold an incredible 37 machines. “We knew it would be much better than W12,” commented John SmithBodden, Managing Director of Huddlestone which owns the W-series of exhibitions on the last day of the show, “But W14 has even exceeded our expectations.” A 28% increase in exhibitors had led to over 20% more floor space with

nding success the W14 show filling three large NEC halls. “We reckon visitor numbers are up by at least 20% on W12,” added John. “Everyone seems very pleased that the quality of enquiries and the level of sales is even higher than expectations.” The machinery content of the event was much expanded on 2012 and the UK’s leading machinery suppliers were certainly out in full force. The organisers were especially delighted to see so many materials and components brands exhibiting for the first time. “The objective of making the show into a complete shop window for visiting UK manufacturers was achieved with W14,” said Event Director Angela McGowan. “Visitors tell us they were thrilled to see such a comprehensive show for the industry.” I don’t think there is any doubt W14 has been a fantastic show with plenty of new product for visitors to see. It just remains for us to add our congratulations to all who took part.

emonstrated from a bustling stand at W14, Maxicam showed its expertise in the manufacture of CNC routers with three wellequipped models from its range. The five-axis M8 offers a working area of up to 1220 x 2440 x 500mm in a compact footprint machine. This tiny machine packs quite a punch with its powerful 7kW liquid cooled HSD ATC spindle and large working area in full five axes. It’s perfect for furniture production and features a high flow vacuum table with T-slots, an eight-position gantry held tool-changer, closed loop AC servo drive and 0-24,000rpm Delta Inverter. Alongside the M8 model 1212 at W14 was an M6 model 1230D and a M4 Maxi 1224D. The M6 1230 is Maxicam’s all rounder for milling and drilling. finishing, sawing and drilling, the M6 1230 provides double work zones for continuous cycles and offers users the convenience of bar code scanning with automatic loading of NC files. There is a choice of 9kW or 12kW HSK ATC spindles and the M6 1230 comes Cabinet Vision ready and with an easy to use OSAI NC control system. For nesting operations, Maxicam showed a real contender with its highly automated Professional Series M4 1224 machine. The complete work cycle of loading the machine, nesting, drilling, sawing and unloading is handled automatically with the M4 and, like the M6 and M8, it comes with an eight-position tool-changer, powerful spindle (9kW) and heavyweight construction for work with wood and composites. At 12 tonnes, the Maka PE90 is no lightweight - yet Maka customers include the smallest of artisans as well as large companies.

O

ne machine, seen from all angles. That was the concept behind the Maka stand at W14. “We wanted to show every aspect of it,” said Iain Young, Maka UK’s MD. “PE90s are usually built to customer specifications so they perform the tasks required exactly. This model is specified for solid panel processing, particularly hardwood panels such as stair strings and treads. Curved hand rails too, as we’re demonstrating here, along with wreaths, end caps and volutes. It features the new CNC table which changes the pods automatically so the machine can be set-up instantly to make different components and process them efficiently using the 5-axis head for routing and compound boring and sawing, and includes a heavy duty boring head for vertical and horizontal multiboring. This particular machine takes panels up to 6m x 1.3m x 300mm. We offer the same type of machine with manual positioning - ideal for processing timber where we rely on laser projection for aligning panels, and employ this for aligning the pods too. We also offer through-feed and multi-gantry versions with 3 and 5 axis heads working in combination for high volume producers. “The PE90 is a very versatile machine. We’ve been getting enquiries from companies large and small, including specialist craftsmen.” The PE90 at W14 isn’t Maka’s largest by any stretch of the imagination but weighing in at over 12 tonnes, there’s still a lot of ultra-heavyweight engineering behind the design. It’s purposeful. It’s rock-solid. And even a cursory overview will tell you vibration isn’t something you’ll ever have to worry about. Maka service and support is equally robust. Join the 60% of Maka customers who have service contracts and Iain is confident you’re unlikely to have much to worry about at all. To find out more call Maka UK on 01952 607700.

89873.indd 9

Without rock-solid heavyweight engineering, machining components from solid wood 24/7 is likely to result in rapid wear and in no time that will lead to deterioration in cutting quality. Maka machines perform such tasks tirelessly and consistently, day in, day out.

14 was a massive success - that was the message from the Homag stand. “The buzz at this year’s show was clear for all to see and hear,” claims Simon Brooks, Homag UK’s Sales and Marketing director. “Our stand was inundated from the moment the doors opened on the Sunday until after the close of the show on Wednesday. “Interest was across the board from the small workshops looking to invest in our entry level machines to improve the productivity of their businesses, to large manufacturers wanting to introduce automated production lines to gain maximum efficiencies. After the tough market conditions of the last five years it was really encouraging to see such a positive outlook from the show visitors.” To underline the Homag Group’s marketing theme for the year, ‘Grow with Homag’, Homag UK was running a promotion at the show to raise money for children’s cancer charity, CLIC Sargent. Visitors to the stand could witness the

versatility and speed of the Weeke Vantage 100 throughfeed nesting machine as it produced one of five wooden height charts including a soldier, snake and penguin designs. A minimum donation of £5 secured a child’s height chart of choice for visitors. For adults, Homag was also making wine bottle holders for a £3 minimum donation. By the end of the show the promotion had raised an incredible £1,540 which was generously doubled by Homag UK who were able to present a cheque for £3,080 to CLIC Sargent. Homag UK showed 17 machines on the stand. Simon Brooks says, “That we were able to achieve this within such a short build-up time for the show emphasises the fact that when our machines are delivered from Germany they are tested and ready to operate straight ‘out of the box’.” Among the machines on show were entry level Highflex 1230 and Ambition 1440 FC machines from edgebander specialist, Brandt. There were also demonstrations of the KTD 720 edgebander for

25m and counting curved parts, which now has a new digital control panel. The KTD 720 can even handle complete 360 o work pieces. Weeke had its immensely successful BHX 055 and BHX 200 compact drilling and routing vertical CNC centres on show. With their automatic tool changing facility these super compact models are truly versatile and practical, and the automatic panel return system fitted to the BHX 200 certainly stirred up a lot of interest. From Bütfering, the SWT 114C and 225CC entry model wide belt sanders were shown. Holzma, meanwhile, demonstrated a machine from its most popular range of beam saws, the HPP 300 - now with the new dustEx system for sensitive boards. For the larger manufacturers, Homag UK showed its BMG 512 CNC processing centre with BAZ technology for curved edging. This versatile machine is ideal for panel processing.

89873.indd 11

On the high volume edgebanding side, Brandt showed its Highflex 1650 FC and Homag its Ambition 2272 models. Both featured the airTec system to demonstrate zero joint technology. The Ambition 2272 was paired up with the Ligmatech ZHR 05 return system. Shown for the first time in Birmingham was Bütfering’s larger wide belt sander with cross belt, the SWT 325 QX. This powerful machine is ideal for sanding solid wood, veneer, sealer and filler coats on an industrial level. Impressing the visitors was Homag’s Venture 316 5-axis CNC processing machine. Work that previously required moving to two or three other machines to be completed can now be done on the Venture 316 alone. Homag’s woodWOP 7 software with 3D graphics gives them a clear picture of what’s happening on the machine. Compared with hand spraying, the the Cefla Prima automated paint spray machine delivers 50% savings on both

paint and energy usage, and it can be run by an unskilled operator. As well as return systems, Ligmatech manufactures carcass presses and had its entry level MPH 410 press on show. With adjustable pressing pressure, two pressing speeds and a timer to set the required pressing time, it is a reliable clamp. “Overall, W14 was a fantastic show for us,” concludes Simon Brooks. “I’d like to thank everyone that visited for making it such a positive event. I’m absolutely overwhelmed by the amount of money that was raised for our chosen charity; it really was the icing on the cake for us. “Sales for the exhibition topped 35 machines at a value of over £2.25m. We came away from the four-day event feeling extremely positive about the future of the UK woodworking industry.” To arrange a demonstration of Homag Group equipment, call Adele Dixon on 01332 856424.

Gabriele De Col, SCM Group UK’s Managing Director, commented on the last day, “We have had an excellent exhibition with many orders and enquiries from across the whole range of the SCM Group’s machinery, from top of the range CNC Machining Centres and large Stefani Edge Banders down to our wide range of Classical Woodworking machines. It certainly confirms that the UK economy is picking up and customers, old and new, are investing in the very latest technology that SCM can offer.” SCM sold four of its Accord 20FX CNC Machining Centre for the production of windows, doors, stairs, solid wood parts and a Stefani single-sided edgebander, the latest laser machine, sold to Brown’s 2000 of Cramlington, was demonstrated and fully working as if on production, using materials and edge banding supplied by Browns 2000. Further sales seem assured.

Drilling panels for carcase production was a Cyflex F900 PRO BR. Productive, versatile and already renowned for fast setup and its high capacity boring head, five were sold from the stand. Gabriele De Col concludes, “After all the hard work by our sales and engineering staff before and during the W14 exhibition, all the effort certainly paid off.” The latest SCM Profiset 60 planermoulder was shown with its new feed system for higher productivity and a better finish. Several orders and enquiries were taken on this very popular machine with joinery and moulding companies. Shown for the first time was one of SCM’s latest edgebanders, the K560 TER2, a compact and productive machine with an 18 metres/min feed speed. eam Masterwood enjoyed one of the busiest shows they have experienced for years.“It was four very hard working days with so many existing and new customers wanting to speak with us about our machines and software, we had more than double the staff on the stand compared to W12, yet we still had people queueing to see us,” commented Masterwood’s Sales Director, Dave Kennard. Live demonstrations of the new Master 3D software attracted a lot of attention, especially from existing customers who could see the extra versatility that the software could add to their current CNC machines. To illustrate the Master 3D demonstrations a half football was produced on the five-axis Project 365. “This was a great demo,”added Technical Director Chris Alexander. “The half sphere and engraved hexagon shape showed the full potential of the five-axis and visitors to the stand were impressed with the quality finish that was produced from just one spiral cutter, a true reflection of the Beckhoff system that allows full 5-axis work to be run accurately and with extremely smooth movements” With further demonstrations on the “M” series MW1538 nesting machine, a Project TF CNC drilling machine, and a Tecnoma edge bander, the stand was kept busy throughout the show. “We anticipated a good show,” said Dave Kennard, “But so far the response has been far greater than we expected, with over three million pounds-worth of CNC quotes already supplied to interested customers.” For more information call 01293 402700 or visit Masterwood’s website at www.masterwood.com

n an industry where reputation is everything, celebrating 25 years in business is no mean feat. As an outsider looking in, it shows strength, determination and above all else, its customers’ unwavering seal of approval. Schelling celebrated this momentous milestone with a customer open house in its new showroom facility, followed by attendance at W14, the largest woodworking show in the UK. Keen to highlight the company’s journey over 25 years, the in-house event showcased the company’s new facilities and latest machinery, with the new S45 cut-to-size saw taking centre stage. “This isn’t just any old beam saw. It will do what other beam saws won’t,” begins Schelling UK’s Managing Director, Markus Freuis, when asked about the S45’s capabilities. “There is nothing else like this on the market.” The saw, which made its UK debut at the in-house event, has a unique saw carriage that can be tilted from zero to 46-degrees and it can mitre cut boards to size when needed. This type of work would normally require various separate

Designed for single and batch production, the new S45 saw offers the versatility of a traditional beam saw with option of mitre cuts and a tilting saw carriage. Offering precision and versatile cutting options, it offers uncompromising performance and significantly reduces the risk of errors and damage caused by multiple-machine handling.

w with more machines - a sliding table saw, router and traditional beam saw - but, thanks to Schelling’s clever engineering, the S45 is the perfect solution. “It’s especially well-suited to shopfitters, small to medium-sized joiners and kitchen manufacturers who are looking to create mitre cuts with consistently high accuracy,” adds Markus. On display at the customer open day, was the S45, an FH4 automatic infeed saw and FK6, all with live demonstrations being conducted throughout the day. “Actions speak louder than words,” explains Markus. “We have every confidence in our machines. We know our machines are good, by showing visitors live demonstrations, the results speak for themselves.” This philosophy has been echoed through the company’s presence at woodworking machinery exhibition, W14. The 132 sq ft stand, which focused on the new S45 saw, was filled with impressive examples of what the saw could achieve. From small pool tables to miniature coffins, the S45 made an impressive and popular focal point.

89873.indd 15

Markus adds, “We knew W14 would be a great launch pad for the S45. Whilst we gave our existing customers the first look at the new model at our in-house show, W14 has allowed us to introduce the saw to the whole of the UK and Irish markets. Interest in the machine has been high.” With the company’s resolute focus and new premises, the future looks bright for Schelling. But what will the next 25 years hold for the company? Markus says, “We’ve had 25 exceptional years in business but this is only just the beginning. Our new premises offer us room to grow and that’s the best birthday present we could wish for. We can now showcase a wide range of machines, offer customers in-depth demonstrations and on-going technical support, all in one centre of expertise. This, along with our experienced team, will enable us to remain at the forefront of wood, metal and plastic technology for many more years to come.” For more information on Schelling (UK) contact 01937 586340 or visit www.schelling.co.uk

and clean aesthetics are important. Alongside the Storm sat Mayer’s PS80 ‘compact class’ beam saw, which offers cutting lengths of 3200 and 4300mm and a saw blade projection of 80mm. The Gannomat Index drilling and inserting machine was the representative of a range which provides options such as multi-spindle drilling heads, routing and grooving units. 14 turned out to be a runaway success for TM Machinery, with both Striebig vertical panel saws and Viet artisan wide belt sanders proving popular with the large number of visitors to TM’s biggest-ever stand. “There was a great deal of interest in the new Striebig 4D, being shown in the UK for the first time, which offers fully automatic panel optimisation,” said TM’s sales director Matt Pearce. The show model had already been pre-sold to Lawcris Panel Products of Leeds. In total, eight Striebig vertical panel saws were sold at W14. “Optimism has certainly returned to the industry and people were prepared to spend money at W14, which was not the case two years ago,” said Matt . “In all we sold eight Striebig machines, including the Compact and Control models that were on the stand, with customers particularly impressed with the extremely small footprint of the high specification Compact.” For the first time TM Machinery showed the Italian-made Viet range of artisan wide belt sanders and, confirms Matt Pearce, they received a very positive reaction from visitors. “Customers really appreciated the competitive price of the small S1 model, given its build quality and high specification. They were also highly impressed with the fine finish delivered by the new Opera 5 machine, which we demonstrated by sanding ink off brochures without any damage to the paper. “All in all we had a great show. Visitor numbers were way up on W12, as was the quality of the enquiries we received, and we now have a great many strong leads to follow up.” To find out more about Striebig or Viet visit the website www.tmmachinery.co.uk or call Matt Pearce at TM Machinery Sales on 0116 271 7155.

going for gold T

here was no mistaking it, Felder was going for gold at W14 with a reported 37 machines sold from the stand on the first day alone - and there seemed no let-up in the pace of sales. Managing Director of Felder Group UK, Matthew Applegarth, was delighted: “W14 was a chance for us to showcase our impressive range of machinery. Quality without risk is at the core of everything we do and we demonstrated the limitless possibilities that Felder can offer.” Felder Group showcased an incredible range of machines on its 550m 2 stand including standard machines such as panel saws, planer-thicknessers, edgebanders, wide belt sanders and spindle moulders through to the Hammer N3800 and the H10 CNC machining centre near the top end of the range. The universal standard machines are compact and represent a complete solution for the smallest of spaces. Format 4, the premium line of CNC machines from the Felder Group, took centre stage with its cutting edge tech-

stwood was in fine form at W14 with a range of panel processing and joinery machines that included Wegoma, Strima, Striffler, EBS and Essetre. With more than 25 years in the sector, Astwood’s stand teamed with visitors, eager to find out more about the new machines on show. From Wegoma, the FKS panel saw with a 300mm main blade diameter and the S Series, which offers a 400mm blade, are available with sliding table capacities from 2000mm to 3800mm. The S400CNC has an intelligent CNC control system for up to eight simultaneously moving axes and diagnostic functions - all from a 7” or 10” touch screen. Customised specifications from three to eight controlled axes, with various cutting lengths and widths are available to tailor each machine to suit any requirements. The 400 Series has four hand wheels on the front of the machine to facilitate the rise, fall and tilt of the main blade while the other two control

the position of the rip fence in conjunction with a digital readout. Start/stop buttons are optional on the end of the sliding table for complete ease of use. Completing Astwood’s spotlight on saws was the Strima double mitre saw, model 2750. The entry level EBS XB-20 automatic edgebander at W14 features a quick heating hotmelt glue unit, an end-trimming unit for cutting the front and rear of the panel and a fine top and bottom trimming unit with two independent motors for trimming excess edges up to 3mm thick. The EBS range includes machines of feed speeds up to 18m/min for materials up to 15mm thick. One wall of the stand was given over to Wegoma/Striffler hand tools, including the PM2000 range of hand held gluepot edgebanding machines. The Wegoma inverter controlled power feed units were also shown for the first time in the UK. For more details call 01527 409006 or visit www.astwood-machinery.co.uk

curves

(without curses) C

urves are the in thing with designers and there’s no denying their appeal in the furniture, joinery and shopfitting sectors, but if the very thought of creating curves is enough to make you curse, take a look at what Curvomatic showed at this year’s W14 exhibition. Born from the need to make curved moulds without the usual expense and waste, Curvomatic is a system of extruded aluminium bars which are joined longitudinally to one another to form a bendable sheet. Once assembled, the sheet bends easily to form the desired curve but stays rigid along its length for perfect forming time and time again. It then takes between ten minutes and an hour to assemble the moulds. Two sheets (a top sheet and a bottom sheet) sandwich the freshlyglued laminates. When tightened with a simple ratchet around the former using straps and clamps, the sandwiched panel bends into shape. The

89873.indd 22

two new extrusions exhibited this year can form curves down to a radius of 40mm. Alternatively, with formers spaced at 400mm, the strength of the Curvomatic system enables pressing in a vacuum and hydraulic system. “Curvomatic uses a fraction of the materials and the time involved in traditional techniques and the result is easily as accurate as you’d expect to get from CNC cut moulds,” says inventor Jim Burgess. “There is no maximum size and Curvomatic works equally as well with the largest jobs.” Curvomatic is also being widely used for thermoforming acrylic solid surface. Moreover, the extrusions can be reconfigured easily to create different shapes, and used time and time again. The system can then be stored flat. The constant crowds on Curvomatic’s W14 stand said it all: this is a system worthy of careful scrutiny. Take a look. Curvomatic really does mean curves without the curse. Call 0116 269 2212.

aids for edges Riepe showed the answer to gluey edges and corners at W14 - even providing solutions for delicate acrylic or aluminium edgebands.

I

f you’ve experienced problems with glue residue during the edgebanding process, or issues with static, W14 exhibitor Riepe, whose products are distributed in the UK by the adhesive specialist Jowat UK Ltd, is almost certainly worthy of a call. For more than 30 years, the German company Riepe has been producing electronically controlled spraying systems together with chemical products to solve just such problems. Glue residue squeezed out after the application of plastic or veneer edging material quickly adheres to workpieces, spoiling the appearance and adding an absolutely unnecessary manual cleaning stage to the process. According to Riepe, the attachment of its release agent and cleaning agent spraying units guarantees a workpiece edge which is absolutely free of glue. The process is simple and automatic: Prior to formatting, an ultra fine coat of release agent LPZ/II® is applied to the edge, both top and bottom, preventing adhesion of glue which is squeezed out during the edgebanding process. Upstream of the buffing unit, in the infeed area, the cleaning agent LP163/93® - also applied electronically

89873.indd 23

- removes loose glue. Once in contact with the buffing wheels (which Riepe also supplies through Jowat UK), the edging is cleaned of residue and simultaneously polished to regain its sheen. The perfect enhancement to the release and cleaning agent spraying units is Riepe’s antistatic coolant unit which, following application of the edge, leads to faster curing of the glue joint as well as statically discharging the edging material. For sensitive edging materials, such as acrylic or aluminium, equipping the anti-static unit with a second nozzle for the application of release agent and lubricant NFLY ® will prevent damage. The application of LP113/03® onto the corner area of an edge that’s been applied to a thick workpiece will prevent the emergence of glue from the corner during the cross gluing process. Riepe also offer a release agent application unit for edgebanders that don’t have size cutters at the infeed and water/air mix sprayers to prevent veneer strips from cracking during application. For more information on Riepe’s units and fluids call Jowat UK Ltd on 01782 565265.

Through Jowat UK Ltd, Riepe supplies the units, the fluids and the buffing wheels to cure most of your edgebanding problems. Jowat offers a comprehensive range of adhesives for edgbanding, including EVA, PO and PUR and its new PUR product 607.60.

ith its bigger print head, faster printing speed and additional head for printing directly onto melamine, the very latest version of the Anderson Cojet was unveiled on the RW stand at W14. And the implications for furniture manufacturers who want to create truly customised, one-off furniture designs are significant. For the first time, it’s now possible to put a Cojet printer directly at the end of a router line where its 23m 2 per minute printing speed at 720 dots per inch resolution will keep pace with production of a doors and fascias production cell. Typically, the new 512 print head, seen for the first time in the UK at W14, prints at 1440 dots per inch and 11.5m 2 per minute but reduce the dots per inch to 360 and throughput rises to 46m 2 per

minute. For comparison, all images in this magazine, including the background picture to this feature, are reproduced at 300 dots per inch. Printing on melamine faced boards is generally considered difficult. However, Anderson’s technicians have developed a primer which is applied by the printing head only where it’s needed, enabling top quality, permanent images to be reproduced on otherwise pristine melamine surfaces. A white ink option means any colour can be printed on any colour of décor without affecting the brilliance of the printed image. The Cojet can even print on glass, permanently frosting the surface at a fraction of the price of acidetched or sand-blasted glass. Get creating! altendorf for bespoke W

hen Bespoke Interiors Made in Cheshire Ltd wanted a new sliding table panel saw, the whole production team decided to make the journey to Birmingham so they could compare all the makes and models on show at W14. Their objective was simple: to find the perfect machine - one capable of high repeat accuracy and a superb quality of cut which required no secondary checks. Having gathered all the information, the Bespoke Interiors team settled on a new Altendorf F45 Elmo from the Altendorf stand. By the time this edition of Furniture Journal had been sent to press, the F45 Elmo had been supplied and installed by Altendorf’s north of England distributor, Manchester Woodworking Machinery Ltd, and it was already being put through its paces on a variety of custom-made fitted furniture designs.

89873.indd 27

Bespoke’s Managing Director, Steve Dunn, and his Foreman, Daina Johnson, were impressed with the knowledge of Manchester Woodworking Machinery’s Eric Barr and in particular Eric’s in-depth knowledge of Altendorf’s F45 Elmo. Altendorf’s reputation for accuracy and reliability, together with ease of use, quality of cut and the low maintenance which come from Altendorf’s uncompromising build quality clinched the deal. The new F45 Elmo, equipped with its first-of-a-kind vacuum clamping table, had all the features Bespoke required. Back up support, service and spare parts from Manchester Woodworking Machinery (which extends across the whole Altendorf model range) provided reassurance and confidence in Bespoke’s new purchase. Mawera systems are designed and manufactured to meet the most challenging applications and run tirelessly so you can benefit from the significant financial advantages in the Renewable Heat Incentive. “Not every installation qualifies,” says John. “The RHI only applies to water and steam boilers and for the heating of premises or offices and/or for process heating. “However,” cautions John, “the RHI applies to the boiler, so it’s wise to ensure you purchase a boiler that is designed and built to last for at least 20 years.” Mawera boilers are built to quality standards which ensure they last. “Mawera over-engineers,” says John, “Especially with regard to the moving

grates, the size of the combustion chamber, the automation of de-ashing and the design of systems for recirculation of fire gases to ensure low Nitrous Oxides.“ As every manufacturer knows, whilst the RHI might make the decision to purchase a new system less painful, the route to installation can be fraught with issues. Mawera’s experts have more than 5,000 installations behind them. They know every aspect of the process from site survey and discussions about the right solution to meet present and future demands through to projecting the job, on-site health and safety and commissioning. hoever thought that going grey could be quite so stylish? With four new high gloss unicolours in Stone Grey, Dakar, Cashmere and Light Grey and four new matt solids with the new F3 texture in Cashmere, Porcelain, Mussel and Alabaster, David Clouting Ltd presented the very latest of the on-trend colours for autumn 2014 in two very versatile décor options. “These are brand new and available from stock,” commented Edward Quant from a busy stand. “The clever part is the unique texture which LG has developed to give the appearance of working in tandem with a pore effect. The result is a visual improvement but it’s not such a deep texturing that it will give rise to some of the manufacturing issues associated with deeper embosses.” The texture effect is also available in Interior Films for a perfect match between furniture and architectural features and really does cross the divide, adding wood texture to plains.

Although development in the woodgrains market has definitely taken a back seat in recent months in favour of burgeoning unicolours, David Clouting Ltd also showed several new prints from LG. These demonstrate clearly the influence of grey elements and tone well with the new range of unicolours. Bonafacio Oak - a Schattdecor print - was being market tested in four colourways. The deep, lustrous shine to Bonafacio Oak Gloss is more than impressive. It’s practically glass in a gloss décor film and the depth it offers compared with the more naturalfinished matt variant was exceptional under the bright stand lights. There were also four new variants of another Schattdecor winner, Chesterfield Oak. rom a pristine white, contemporary stand at W14, Rehau launched what could well be the lightest substrate panel for the 3mm Rauvisio mineral material yet to be seen in the market. “Per cubic metre, a typical lightweight MDF panel weighs in at about 126 kilos,” explained Sally Brett from Rehau. “We’ve just introduced a lightweight material substrate based on XPS (extruded polystyrene) foam which weighs just 36 kilos per cubic metre. It’s a joint development with one of Rehau’s partners. The Rauvisio mineral surface product is available in over 40 different decorative designs, with more being added.” This is a fully acrylic solid surface material with no polyester content, and, says Sally, “It’s a designers dream to work with.” The latest addition to the Rauvisio product range, the brilliant high gloss laminate, was a real highlight on the stand. Available as laminates, pressed boards or finished door fronts,

89873.indd 38

Rauvisio brilliant high gloss can be produced in bespoke sizes. Also on display was Rauvisio crystal, a polymer ‘glass’ laminate with “all the benefits of real glass but none of the processing challenges”. Like the high gloss laminate, Rauvisio crystal is also available as a pressed board or as finished panels in bespoke sizes. For the perfect finish, all bespoke Rauvisio crystal and brilliant components are edged using the latest laser edging technology and Raukantex edgeband. This opens up a new dimension in the design of furniture. “The combination of one of our surfaces, when used with Raukantex laser edgeband, provides the appearance of a totally seamless panel, creating visual perfection and enhanced performance.” From solid surfaces, laminates to bespoke components, Rehau offers the complete solution. he objective of us participating in W14 was to promote our 3D membrane pressing grades of adhesive and also our flat lamination high gloss range of adhesives,” said Bradly Larkan, Kleiberit’s General Manager for the UK and Ireland. “These have been formulated to bond ABS or PMMA to MDF which would later be converted to high gloss kitchen door fronts. “We showed two new products: a PU dispersion (431.7) that could be run in customers’ membrane presses or 3D presses - Bürkle-type presses - where the advantage would be low reactivation temperatures down to 50o Celcius. Running presses at lower temperatures saves energy but also, when high gloss foils are run at lower temperatures, the result is a better optical finish and less orange peel. Customers using membranes in their 3D presses can also expect extended cycle times and life span

from their membranes. The other innovation we showed was a product used for flat lamination (PU hotmelt 711.3) that, when bonding two non-permeable substrates (for example, HPL to sheet metal or aluminium) there are no side effects from CO2 bubble formation. That means less scrap and no uneven surfaces caused by gas formation. “Our latest products were received with great interest because we’ve managed to address common problems very simply,” added Bradly. “Our presence at W14 was extremely well received. We saw many new customers and many potential customers. We were very impressed with the resulting visitor numbers and we came away with many good value enquiries from the show.” For more information on Kleiberit’s newest formulations call 01530 836699 or visit www.kleiberit.com

he wide range of waste separation systems is continually being optimised and expanded at VauthSagel. One of the worldwide best-sellers within the programme is the Öko liner, which is now being expanded to include the innovative organisational drawer. This can accommodate beautifullyshaped plastic containers and offers flexibility, utilising limited storage space below the kitchen sink and above the waste separation system. The Öko liner stands out with its cushioned front-panel drawer and its VauthSagel guide system. Opening and closing are easy and virtually silent. Furthermore, the two installation heights and the numerous different container sizes offer customised comfort which enable users to comply with widely differing local waste disposal stipulations or to cater to customer-specific depth requirements that enable the installation of under-sink water heaters - all with the utmost ease using the modular system. Detailed step-by-step instructions permit quick and easy installation of the organisational drawer. An installation template applied to the carcass wall helps the fitter to correctly position and drill the holes for the drawer. The two pull-outs can be aligned by means of 3D adjustment and the front mounted to the frame without the use of tools. Simple! Details: www.vauth-sagel.com

ur home and the furniture that surround us are a reflection of what we are. Elegance, shine, glossy surfaces to mirror our emotions and to make a statement are de rigeur. Not fashion, but style. Not just gloss, but radiance. Fibraplast Lucent, by Finsa, gives an entirely new dimension to high gloss surfaces, outpacing many other glossy products available in the market. The exclusive breakthrough technology used in the manufacturing process is the reason for its surface quality, its high gloss level, as well as its high scratch and UV resistance. The quality of the Finsa MDF baseboard guarantees excellent machinability and consistent mechanical properties, as with all wood-based panels made by the Spanish producer. As with all decorative panels, edgings are a key complement. The availability of matching edgings make Fibraplast Lucent a completely versatile

product and a beautiful decorative solution. Fibraplast Lucent comes in a wide range of stunning and modern woodgrains as well as a number of beautiful solid colours. This extensive array of décors opens a myriad of possibilities in furniture, interior decoration and shopfitting. In the home, the main application for Fibraplast Lucent is kitchen furniture - and it fits perfectly with the current trend for glossy surfaces. The combination of woodgrains and solid colours helps create inviting and sophisticated spaces. While other high gloss products in the market are usually more expensive and/or require additional industrial processing (like pressing of the laminate onto a board, sanding, priming or lacquering), Fibraplast Lucent is conveniently priced and ready to use. But it’s not only in kitchen manufacturing that Fibraplast Lucent finds favour. Bedroom furniture

awkins Joinery in Wellingborough is benefitting from faster panel sanding together with improved quality after buying a Viet S1 wide-belt sander. The Italian-made machine was bought primarily to sand down the lippings on oak and oak-veneered panels used as retail shelving, a task it does swiftly and efficiently. This was previously carried out either manually using an electric planer, followed by hand sanding, or was sent out to a local business that had a modern sander. Said Dave Hawkins, who together with his brother Mark, owns the joinery, “In a typical contract we have to make between 100 and 150 items of shelving. It used to take one man around two days to do all the sanding by hand, so that the lippings were flush with the panels. With the Viet it takes only about an hour, with one man loading the pieces onto the sander and another taking them off. The finished quality is always spot on, much better than we could do by hand.” The Viet represents a major boost to efficiency. “It allows the men to get on with other jobs in the

89873.indd 45

workshop and there’s now no need to pay another company to do the sanding for us when we are busy.” The Viet S1 2200 heavy-duty model features two sanding belts, the first to do the initial rough sanding and the second to produce a fine finish. It has a working width of 1350mm and a sanding belt length of 2200mm. Clear and simple controls makes it easy to operate. The versatile S1 is ideal for the calibration and sanding of solid wood, veneered panels, chipboard, MDF and Melamine panels and the sanding of lacquered panels with a matt finish. Comments Dave Hawkins, “I don’t believe in skimping on costs when it comes to buying equipment, as it never pays off in the long run. I looked at a few other sanders but decided that Viet offered the best value for money. “The Viet is perfect for our needs and has upped our sanding quality whilst delivering both time and cost savings. It’s a great bit of kit.” For more information on Viet sanders call TM Machinery on 0116 271 7155 or visit the company’s website at www.tmmachinery.co.uk

hen you’ve got a problem, you go to an expert to find a solution. And that’s exactly what Parminder Singh Ranauta, the MD of Perivale-based Ranco Kitchens & Bedrooms did. “When my uncle and I started the company, we had a bad experience with a second hand machinery supplier,” he recalls. “We were a small business. We couldn't afford to pay our workers if the machines we were using stopped working. We put the feelers out for a new supplier and we found Ney to be a great help. They were there in our time of need and because of that, we've stayed loyal to them.” Ranco’s most recent problem stemmed from the standard edgebander they were using: it was creating visible glue lines. To overcome this, the team spent many hours cleaning the machine and trying different colours of glues but to no avail. “It was a time-consuming process which would have eventually started to cost us much more than man hours. We needed to find a solution.”

With Ney made fully aware of Ranco’s problem, Parminder visited Ney’s InHouse show to see the Airtronic edgebander. “We’d been told about the machine before it was launched,” recalls Parminder, “And I was keen to see what it could do. The finish got my attention immediately. You would honestly think the board was one single piece. I had seen nothing like it before so I bought it there and then. It was the first Airtronic to be sold in the UK.” The machine was bought and installed in the same week. “This is the type of service you come to expect from Ney,” adds Parminder, clearly delighted with his supplier. “That’s why we’ve worked almost exclusively with them for over nine years. I buy edging tapes, foils, glue, wirework, runners, hinges, handles and bedroom wirework from Ney.” Over the nine years Ranco has worked with Coventry-based Ney Ltd, the company has flown members of the Ranco team to Germany to meet

ney way machinery manufacturers as an aid to deciding on other machines - and Ranco now has quite a collection from Ney. “I don’t know another supplier who would do that,” he says. ”The sales staff are always on hand to help us.” Whilst Ranco’s team is highly trained and used to working with woodworking machinery, Ney’s technical engineers spent time with the team when installing the new machine to limit any downtime caused by the installation. It’s clearly paid off. Since the introduction of the Airtronic, product quality has increased and the time taken to clean the machine has been considerably reduced. “Because the Airtronic doesn’t need to use a glue pot, it’s really simple to clean,” says Parminder. “What was a major problem has been completely rectified with this machine. I can’t rate it highly enough.” To find out more about the Airtronic edgebander, or for a complete overview of all the machinery and consumables available from Ney Ltd., call 024 7630 8100 or visit www.ney.co.uk

Designed exclusively for woodworking machinery and consumables supplier, Ney Ltd, the Airtronic system (which can also be added to the KDP 114 SLK-P, KDP 115 SLK-P, KDP 116 SLK-P and KDP 117 SLK-P models) eradicates unwanted glue lines, creating a perfect transition from edgeband to panel and providing a hygienic, seamless join. Ney’s Shahana Kishver explains: “The new system will apply premium-coated edging materials up to 3mm thick and, whilst it’s compatible with hot-melt glues, laser edges and PUR, it doesn’t come with the hefty price tag often associated with its laser counterparts. “Whilst the technology behind the design is complex, the concept is simple,” explains Shahana. “The machine heats compressed air through a fan equipped heater until it reaches its operational temperature. It then irradiates through a nozzle to the inside of the premiumcoated edge. It is this process which creates a perfectly seamless edge that is highly heat, moisture and water resistant.” With a heat-up time of just three minutes, the parameters of temperature, air pressure and speed are optimised for ease of use but can be changed and saved via a touch screen console to work with different edging materials.

ey’s latest in-house event, held to coincide with W14, gave exhibition attendees an opportunity to drop-in and see the latest products for themselves. “The idea was simple,” begins Shahana Kishver. “We showcase new product twice a year in our purpose-built 25,000 sq ft showroom. It gives new and existing customers an opportunity to explore our portfolio and see what we, as a company, can offer. As we’re situated only 12 miles from the NEC, we wanted to open our doors to the public during the biggest woodworking show in the UK, offering W14 visitors the chance to come and visit us before or after the show.” With strong visitor numbers and several orders taken at the in-house show, the event did not disappoint. Over 50 machines were on show, with several models shown for the first time under the Ney umbrella, including the new OMC press and the latest machines from its new partnership with Italian machinery manufacturer, Vitap. The show also offered visitors an opportunity to talk to engineers and see the machines in action. “Nobody knows the ins and outs of a machine like the manufacturer, so we always invite the engineers to our shows,” explains Shahana. “They can talk you through the machine, offer demonstrations and give sound advice. It’s a service that most machinery suppliers can’t offer so it is a great selling point for us.” The showroom also presented the latest components available from the Coventry-based distributor, including a new kitchen and bedroom spotlight and strip light range. Shahana adds, “Components are very important to us. They allow us to be the complete solution for manufacturers. Our latest spot, strip and touch sensitive lights complement the exist range of sliding doors, wirework and kitchen and bedroom doors we have on offer and what better place to show them off than on our lifestyle display?” For more information on Ney Ltd please visit www.ney.co.uk or call 024 76 308100.

resser Mouldings manufactures timber mouldings. Realising the only way to grow the business was through differentiation, cutting edge technology and top quality production systems, Dresser engaged Schubert Technical Services Ltd, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of turnkey finishing systems, in a modernisation project for their spray finishing requirements. After discussions and exhaustive live tests, an order was placed for a new Schubert-Makor profile finishing line. The new finishing line is special in many ways: it allows hand-feeding of product up to 300mm wide and 4200mm long; the spray machine is fitted with two separate spray circuits which enable fast colour changes; the line is able to deal with MDF, softwood, hardwood and exterior timber cladding products; and, in accordance with

89873.indd 53

Dresser’s environmental policy, the new automatic coatings line is designed to run exclusively with water-based paint and clear lacquer top coats. Fitted with anthropomorphic arms, the Makor IRIDE 306 spray machine is able to coat all four sides in one pass and with special outfeed roller conveyors, that means no marking on the underside of the products. Spray film thickness can be adjusted easily on primers, base coats and top coats. Even protective exterior paints have been sprayed on the new line. The IRIDE 306 spray machine also comes with a special Teflon-coated pullout internal trolley system (on wheels) to facilitate easy access to key parts and easy cleaning of overspray tubs and gun systems. The automatic sanding machine is fitted with four Flex-Trim brush sanding heads to ensure a high quality finish. There are many cheaper copies

of Flex-Trim on the market but where quality matters most, Mark Schubert of Schubert Technical Services Ltd is adamant, there is no substitute. The sanding machine will not only pre-sand but also de-nib after the first coat has been cured in the hot air oven system. A temperature resistant Kevlar mesh infeed conveyor (before the spray machine) allows pre-heating modules to be incorporated, aiding rapid drying and promoting adhesion of certain water-based coatings. Special bi-conical outfeed rollers after the spray machine allow the processing of four-sided wet product (where necessary) without marking on the underside. Finally a cross-transfer conveyor and hot air drying oven complete the system. The line is more than capable of running up to 60m/min, but normally will run at 40m/min to give the best quality finish and allow the operators time to check the quality of each piece

Says Bill Gunn of Dresser Mouldings, “Having exhausted the market looking for the right coating/spray applicator, the name Schuberts kept coming to the top of our list. We spent three full days at the Makor factory in Italy carrying out a range of live tests. We came away knowing we had found the right machinery and working partners in Schuberts.” “Since the installation, we have been delighted by the professional and handson approach given by Schubert engineers and staff,” adds Bill. “Dresser Mouldings was already a market leader in external water-based coatings. However, we lacked the ability to compete on internal water-based lacquered coatings. Having now purchased the Makor IRIDE 306 spray-line, it has transformed the company’s ability to offer both internal and external water-based stains and lacquers.” Call Schuberts on 01226 360900 or visit www.schuberts.co.uk

esseler UK Ltd is a furniture manufacturer that prides itself on producing some of the most refined kitchens in the UK. Attention to detail and focus on quality are right at the top of the company’s priority list. The business operates nationally from premises in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, supplying exclusively to retail showrooms. When it came to upgrading the company’s existing five-year-old edgebanding machine, quality and consistency were high on the list of requirements. Operations Director Ben Slater says, “Our existing machine was producing a good finish but we wanted more consistency from the machine and to push the limit in terms of an absolutely perfect finish. A zero glue line finish on all our cabinets with no restriction in use of colours, as well as no restriction in tape thickness led us to FEN UK and the edgebanding machine from Paul Ott GmbH.”

89873.indd 56

Following an extensive consultation and selection process, Derby-based FEN UK was invited to supply a new top-of-the-range StrongEdge edgebanding machine from Austrian edgebanding machinery manufacturer Paul Ott GmbH. Included in the installation was a Translift panel return system. “The heavy duty Strongedge machine, is capable of producing a zero glue line finish with all standard edging tapes available,” says FEN UK’s Managing Director, Felix Ney. “Thanks to the LCM cleaning systems fitted, all panels leave the machine fully finished without the need for any manual cleaning intervention after edgebanding.” The machine will apply solid wood edges of up to 20mm in thickness and coil materials right down to 0.3mm. Feed speed is 20m/min including corner rounding passes. The machine is fully automatic in operation and even the tape is set automatically in its guide.

oses ott’s strongedge The Translift panel return solution deals with 100% of edgebanded panel sizes and is not limited to the normal 70-80% of panel sizes typical of other belt and roller transfer systems. “Our previous panel return fitted to our old edgebander was limited in the panel sizes it could feed back to the operator,” says Kesseler’s Ben Slater. “Once we saw the Translift demonstrated, we quickly recognised the extra capability of the system. Now it really is a one-man operation all of the time.” Commercial Director, Scott Slater adds, “Now that we are able to produce an edge finish that is really leading in the industry, and with our successful patented mortise and tenon jointing technology, we have noticed a strong uplift in interest and buy-in from our dealers. The finish we now produce on our products further strengthens the Kesseler brand commitment to high quality, refined kitchens.” For further information, or to discuss zero glue line, call 01332 516557.

56 • FURNITURE JOURNAL NOVEMBER 2014 Over the three years since the renewable heat incentive (RHI) was introduced, Talbotts have completed more than 50 installations accredited to the scheme. The RHI, a government programme that offers support for biomass boiler installations and other renewable technologies, means that a wood waste boiler unit from Talbotts will not only reduce disposal and energy costs but the user can also claim a tariff for each kW of heat produced. These claims are made quarterly year on year for a period of up to 20 years. To be eligible, the biomass boiler needs to meet strict emission limits - all the Talbotts specialist MWE series have been fully tested and certified for wood waste fuels like MDF, MFC and chipboard. The MWE199, shown right, has been installed at Wellingborough-based Robinson Manufacturing. The comprehensive boiler package, featuring automatic compressed air heat exchange cleaning, automatic de-ash and ignition, has impressed Tim Robinson so much that a further boiler unit from Talbotts is being installed at one of their other manufacturing facilities. 01785 213366 www.talbotts.co.uk

machine shop Spray finishing can often be a time-consuming and expensive job as the bottom side of a workpiece needs to be masked to prevent overspray. Martin have the solution with the speed 20/10 spray table which features a paper layer on the table top, on to which the workpiece is laid and transported. For easy removal the workpiece is pneumatically lifted and the paper is moved over statically neutral plastic rollers, with a new clean paper surface produced in seconds. Foot switches control the lifting components and feed of the paper roll pneumatically meaning that an electrical power supply isn’t necessary, and the paper roll can be changed easily without tools. The work surface measures approximately 1800 x 1000mm and the table can be rotated 180º during spraying for easy access. sales@martin.info www.martin.info

Makita have used their new ‘BL’ brushless-motor technology to improve the reliability and performance of their tools, which are also more compact and manoeuvrable due to a shorter body length. The Makita DHP481 LXT combi drill (main pic) has up to twice the run-time of traditional motors due to the brushless motor, running up to 2,100rpm in high gear and 550rpm in low. It delivers 31,500 impacts per minute in high gear and 8,250 impacts per minute in low gear, and can generate 60Nm of fastening torque (soft joint) and 115Nm (hard joint), making it the highest torque yet from the Makita 18v range. The new Makita DDF481 LXT drill driver (inset) mirrors the main features of the DHP481 but without the percussion function. www.makitauk.com

The precise grip from a barrel handle with the addition of a top pommel directly above the blade for two-handed control is now available with Makita’s new cordless jigsaws. The Lithium-ion powered DJV181 and DJV141 models have a barrel handle whilst the DJV182 and DJV142 are more traditional jigsaws with an ergonomic top handle and soft grip. The 18v models have a capacity of 360 watts and the 14.4v models 320 watts. All new jigsaws feature a safety trigger switch which will reduce accidents by automatically locking the machine if the lock-on button is not pressed within 10 seconds after releasing the trigger. All these new jigsaws weigh just 2.5kg and run from 800 up to 3,500 strokes per minute with a 26mm stroke length. www.makitauk.com
