Wintersteiger Thin-Cutting Days attract visitors from around the world This autumn the Wintersteiger headquarters in Ried turned into an international competence centre for innovative thin-cutting technology. Customers and interested parties from across Europe, the USA and New Zealand accepted an invitation to thincutting days. "The entire range of industries was represented, from producers of boards and panels, furniture, parquet and doors to manufacturers of composite materials for the automotive industry," says a delighted Franz Haas, Head of the Woodtech Division. "The single-module band saws were able to score during the thin-cutting days. The DSB Singlehead 310 won the audience with its reversing system, and the DSB Singlehead 660 was able to arouse interest with 660mm cutting width, particularly for producers of multi-layer boards. The mobile saws for sawmills and carpentry as well as the block and band resaws were also compelling. There is a noticeable trend toward minimal use of material. As a specialist in thin-cutting, we strive for each and every bit of extra efficiency. Even 1/10 of a millimetre of timber saved is money in our customers' pockets – certainly a highly popular topic," says Haas. 0043 7752 919326

New colours and curves from Apex Apex has launched a new collection of softly curved doors, accessories and colours to its already wide and varied portfolio. The curved slab kitchen cabinet doors create a soft elegant feel, making the most of smaller and awkward shaped kitchens. The doors are complemented by a family of matching accessories including a curved plinth with flexibility to accommodate any base radius, a curved and straight cornice/pelmet with 28mm square profiles plus a multi-purpose rail with 38mm square profile. All are available in 13 distinctive Apex colourways. In addition, a further two new colours, Ivory Gloss and Odessa Oak, join the original colour range. 01704 896600 sales@apexinteriorsystems.co.uk www.apexinteriorsystems.co.uk
Severe wear on standard carbide tools used for machining fire resistant melamine was a real problem for retail joinery manufacturer Spira Projects. The company found that after only three or four sheets of the material the cutter was worn out – so the search was on for a solution. The answer came from ATA Engineering Processes who advised switching to their new Onsrud Marathon Cutter which is believed to be the longest running compression tool available. This has been achieved thanks to advances in cutting geometry and the addition of an Onsrud coating that creates a harder and tougher cutting edge. The coating is formulated to protect the cutting edge from the high temperature generated when routing laminated and composite wood products. The cutter is available in 3/8 to 1/2in sizes and comes with either two or three cutting edges. 01442 264411 sales@ataeng.com www.ataeng.com
SUPER ACCURATE SAMPLES FROM INTERPRINT
T
he Interprint Group has installed a digital décor sample production system at three international corporate locations. The method is quick and meets high visual quality demands. The use of gravure ink pigments and gravure paper ensures that all digital samples can be accurately reproduced in the final décor printing. The digital sample production significantly reduces the product development time for décors. “The handling of the digital data is very simple. A large number of colour variants of a décor can be produced in the shortest possible time. All versions can subsequently be laminated onto sample boards,” explained Salvatore Figliuzzi, Décor Development and Marketing Manager at Interprint. “This allows the customer to individually modify the décor colour directly at the computer workstation on our premises and immediately select the desired colour.” Interprint’s digital prints are free of metamerism which allows the customer to assess the colours much more accurately compared to traditional photo paper and pigments. Another advantage of Interprint’s digital method is that it is more sustainable and environmentally friendly than the conventional gravure-printed sample. Cylinder engraving can be dispensed with. The lesser use of paper and colour protects the environment. The overall energy requirement decreases significantly. Interprint is already using the digital sample production method at its locations in Germany, Italy and Malaysia. Further locations of the corporate group will follow in the near future. 0049 2932 9500

Show organiser Carlo Giobbi.
sicam 2011 review SICAM 2011 was a resounding success - Melvyn Earle gives his verdict on the international exhibition of components and accessories for the furniture industry in Pordenone last October.
F Left: Inoxa used Sicam 2011 to launch two versatile pullout, swinging, turning larders - the 818 and the 816 (a fixed version). Installation is simple because both systems are telescopic, ensuring an exact fit with the carcase. The 818 will take up to six baskets. Available to fit 30, 40, 45, 50 and 60cm units in heights from 900 to 2 metres. 0039 719 06324 www.inoxa.it

Shown here with bottom mounted hinges, it provides a very neat installation. 01295 700109 www.stabilus.com
rom the moment you step off the plane at Venice's Marco Polo airport, the influence of the Sicam organisation greets you: "You go to exhibition?" asks an unusually smileyfaced immigration officer, as if his brief had come directly from the Giobbi family; from behind a Sicam desk at the exit to the arrivals hall, Sicam staff emerge to guide you to the waiting Sicam coach; not fifty metres from the entrance where the coach drops you, check-in is progressing like a well-oiled machine. If it was Carlo Giobbi's aim to show the world how an exhibition should be organised, he and his team deserve guru status for this, the third edition of what must be Italy's premier furniture components show. For all its intensity, though the aisles were busy from start to finish, Sicam gives an air of serenity. The openness of the stands, the absence of on-stand hospitality and the simple, clear signage in the aisles overhead each stand make this one of the easiest exhibitions to navigate. It's business-like - and plenty of business was being written. "It's been a very good show for us," said an enthusiastic Acelyn Idikut on the Roma Plastik stand. "The response we've had from suppliers at Sicam has been phenomenal," echoed David Caulfield from a BA Components stand that was crowded with visitors. "This is our first

"All our very important clients from Italy, Russia and even Iran have been on the stand. We did not expect to see so many visitors from so many different countries!" It's a story we heard over and over again.
Right: Featuring runners in the 40, 60 and 80kg loading categories as well as using the same carcase drill-hole pattern throughout, the new ArciTech drawer system from Hettich is ready to meet the demands of the future. The Actro runner creates a perfect system with a unique running smoothness, stability and soft-closure while the unique prism principle sets the benchmark. The platform concept for the system allows a combination of different heights and design forms for both drawers and pull-outs. 0161 872 9552 www.hettich.com

Left: Acrimarc acrylic edgings which look like glass were the big design story from Roma and it's possible to see many applications for these novel, striking designs in upmarket and middle market furniture designs. Showing on a stand that buzzed with activity next to new owners, Egger, Roma Plastik announced the up-coming launch of their stock edgebanding programme in 2012 and showed 47 new perfect match edgings, matched exactly with Egger products. "We also produced pre-glued laser edging," added a cautious Acelya Idikut, Roma's marketing manager. "We are ready for when the market takes off." 0090 262 648 4500 www.romaplastik.com

It's clear that exhibitors are also taking Sicam very, very seriously. In the wake of Interzum, it was surprising to see quite so many new products making their debuts on stands. Although some of the major décor specialists were absent, Schattdecor, Süddekor, Impress, Kronospan, Egger and others used the exhibition as a showcase for scores of new designs, furthering the co-ordinated visual-tactile theme with ever more exciting structures. We were particularly impressed with five prototypes on the Kronospan stand - hopefully these heavily embossed and surface-treated woodgrains will make it to market. Full marks to Süddekor, too, for a stunning new cross-cut butcher block décor. And on the Schattdecor stand, Claudia Küchen and her team had been busily creating works of art, among them an exceptional new interpretation of exotic heartwood. At the cutting edge of edgebanding technology, the edgebanding suppliers are all waiting for the industry to catch up, several paving the way with an offer of new pre-glued laser edging from stock. Commented an enthusiastic Zdenek Ryzner, the Chairman of Hranipex, "We have developed our Express Collection for PP edges now. 1520 décors are available in 100 linear metre lengths. Our big laser customers are creating the demand." For sure, as soon as the cost of laser technology starts to come down - and it will when the technology becomes more widespread and matures - we'll see more and more glueline-free edging applied with laser edgebanders. Perhaps the laser edgebander manufacturers will take inspiration from the edgebanding suppliers and start to adopt a more positive approach to help create a market which, for the moment, has all but plateaued in a chicken and egg stalemate.

Fascias are big business. The Italians, once the price and style leaders, are beginning to feel the pressure. BA Components is in the overtaking lane and enjoying success after success with its made-to-measure offer, which now extends to curved doors, even concave glass curved doors. BA is also expanding its offer to include Glidor, a new sliding door range, and has installed a new pressing line so it can offer flat panel lamination. Hardware for doors and drawers is becoming more discreet, smoother and more functional. There were new hinge designs from Grass, Ferrari and Salice, new undermount drawer systems and softer soft close systems for drawers, doors, shutter doors and sliding doors. Two new products we particularly liked were the soft open, soft close Lift-O-Mat combination for bottom mount flap doors from Stabilus and the retro-fittable sliding door damper from Ferrari. The latter sits invisibly behind the top track, facilitating soft close and soft open, even with sizeable bedroom mirror doors. For the ultimate luxury product, there was little to beat Bortoluzzi's electric soft open, soft close, co-planar system, available through Salice UK. Touch to open, touch to close - there's even a remote opening system.

Right: Linak's brand new CBD6 Control Box may look remarkably similar to its older brother, the CBD4, but turn it upside down (bottom right) and the difference becomes obvious: there's a cable run in the underside of the new model which makes for altogether neater installation. designed for use with any kind of column in the Deskline range, it features two channels and standby power of just 0.1 Watts. 0121 544 2211 www.linak.co.uk
Storage solutions are advancing all the time and, in general, the quality has leapt forward in the last few years. They seem to range from the hopelessly impractical to the very sensible. Full marks to Inoxa for its neat Dynamic Corner with removable, drawer-like wooden baskets. But what were the designers thinking of on one particular German stand when they came up with a corner solution that soft-closed emphatically before the basket could be enticed from the base unit? Maybe German cooks like to play hide and seek with their vegetables... In conclusion, though the weather in the first couple of days did everything possible to dampen spirits, Sicam 2011 was intent on delivering, both for visitors and for exhibitors. Slick organisation and a great atmosphere contributed much to the resounding success of a show which has seduced its sector in a remarkably short time. If you didn't make it this year, make a mental note not to miss the 2012 edition. Sicam will not disappoint. Guaranteed!

emand for healthy, sustainable products and buildings is growing. Over the last decade, consumers, designers and furniture manufacturers have steadily adopted the idea that sustainability sells - but how does one prove that a product is sustainable? Döllken’s Greenguard certification programme provides everything you need - even for the most demanding of school environments. With its high-quality thermoplastic edging products (polyvinyl chloride, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene, polypropylene and polymethyl methacrylate), Döllken met the strenuous requirements of Greenguard Children & Schools certification programme. The acclaimed Greenguard Institute in Atlanta, USA, awarded worldwide certification which includes all production locations for edgebandings in the Döllken Group (Germany, China, Indonesia, Australia, Chile, USA and Canada). The Greenguard Indoor Air Quality Programme tests products with
regard to the emission of over 10,000 possible chemical compounds. Testing procedures are carried out in the most modern stainless steel testing chambers according to recognized ISO norms. Guidance levels and requirements derive from internationally recognized standards, such as those of the Blue Angel certification (Der Blaue Engel), ISO 14001 or the American government agency EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). Moreover products have to be tested annually to keep up certification. The Greenguard Children & Schools certification programme contains challenging certification criteria for products because in these areas there is an especially intensive use of facilities, and because “children react especially sensitive to emissions”. For more details on safe Greenguard products, trend-setting laser edgebands, or digital edgebanding, call +49 (0) 2043 9790, or visit Döllken’s website at www.doellken-kv.com

chattdecor’s presentation motto for the SICAM exhibition this October was a striking look combined with a discernible texture and there were over 40 new décors in their booth at the show in Pordenone. This included ten developed specifically to suit the location, with the Italian market and its customers in mind. The full expansive range of Schattdecor’s development and textural prowess was displayed with a top selection of new décor variations, each complemented by perfectly matching finishes in melamine, Smartfoil or Postfoil with a 3D or real pore effect. Visitors experienced trend themes titled “pure Essence”, “tomorrow’s Souvenir” and “industrial Heritage” in sections of Schattdecor’s booth which presented an interesting mix of strongselling and Italian-designed décors. Two of the new Italian décors, Olmo Laevis and the exciting Larix, attracted the greatest attention whilst the continuing demand for oak with a restrained but striking look was reflected by Riyeka Oak and Chambord Oak. 0049 8031 275 2779 www.schattdecor.de
Schattdecor enjoyed success at SICAM in Pordenone, exhibiting over 40 new décors as well as samples from the digital VISIONS collection and the second edition of its Caravan Decor collection book.
Italian-designed décors Olmo Laevis is based on a finely-grained elm with the subtle ray flecks typical for the wood. The elegant, natural look of woodgrain like the elm goes well with the patterns and colours of the furnishing style which reflects the optimistic era of the 50s and 60s.
Riyeka Oak A calm overall impression is created by Riyeka Oak, marked by realistic negative pores. The predominantly straightgrain look is enlivened by crossfires and tiny knots.
Olmo Laevis Chambord Oak Larix is a purely plain-stripe pine décor with very little movement in the grain that is finely balanced in colouration. It makes an arresting 3D effect thanks to accomplished reproduction of the wirebrushed material. The décor reflects the trend towards striking décors that work with matching textured press plates.
Larix
A rustic décor offering a touch of distinction, Chambord Oak takes its inspiration from material with a very fine porous grain with additional negative pores. The tightly-laid planking contributes to the balanced colouration and the layout is animated by numerous knots and narrow flame figures.

rend prediction is an art; one which the wood based panel manufacturer, Egger, seems to do rather well. Last year, Egger updated its UK collection with a new range of décors that raised the bar to new heights. Egger’s Product Marketing Manager, Andrew Sanderson, explains the success: “Last year we moved into a new era for MFC reproductions and this year we continue to invest in textures and new finishes in order to move the product closer and closer to the look and feel of solid wood and veneer. We have had great success with the new décors we launched over the last two years and when we show our customers our latest décors alongside those we launched even 5-6 years ago they can't believe the difference. A great example of this is H1372 Natural Aragon Oak. With its highly defined,

Our range of eye-catching décors and modern classic woodgrains can be combined with these two uni colour palettes to create stark, modern contrasts as well as softer more harmonious contrasts.” Last year Egger updated its classic woods with new Ash, Oak and Cherry designs. H1215 ST22 Brown Cassino Ash is completely different to the traditional black and white Ash effects of the 1980s. As consumers select by colour rather than by species, Brown Cassino Ash could be considered as a next generation alternative to Egger's H3703 Natural Aida Walnut. Oak remains a firm favourite.

Egger added H3660 ST9 Light Venetian Cherry to its 2011 range. The texture ST9 enhances this décor to give it the look and feel of a veneer. To provide more individuality, Egger has also introduced two eye-catching expressive décors: versatile H3012 ST22 Coco Bolo meets the needs for striking yet very natural exotic reproductions (it's been widely used in kitchens, bedrooms and living rooms, often combined with uni décors such as U727 ST9 Stone Grey or U741 ST9 Lava), and H3058 ST22 Mali Wenge providing realistic 3D character to a familiar exotic. It offers better value, and a more consistent appearance to veneers. FURNITURE JOURNAL JANUARY 2012 • 17 Stone Grey Suedette Matt with Kielder A Kielder A, a light bleached colour with undertones of grey, is ideally suited as a companion to Stone Grey Suedette Matt. The modern, fresh Kielder has a traditional woodgrain structure enhanced by a new structured surface emboss.

The depths of the small knots in Samira B create movement with its sophisticated contrast, portraying a cool yet appealing effect.
Soft Cream Suedette Matt with Lancelot C Lancelot C, a pale farmhouse oak, has 3 dimensional effect distress lines and the new surface structured emboss. Soft Cream Suedette Matt emphasises the lighter undertones in the design resulting in rustic charm with a fresh modern twist.
odern interior design is combining kitchens and living rooms together more and more and Renolit believes that kitchens are becoming as much a design statement on display as a cooking location. Mixing and matching colours and designs is used to define these continuous spaces, to bridge, shape and differentiate the atmosphere and use of an area. A connection is provided by using a colour that can continue into another zone while introducing a sharp contemporary design creates a distinctive highlight element to define a separation. The recently relaunched Renolit Alkoren range has an assortment of seven matt plain colours, with the white and two creams also available in a more satin finish. The extensive range all have a paint-effect surface texture which benefits from stain resistance and superior scratch and mar performance. The colour range starts with light whites through soft and rich creams to the deeper, more atmospheric and muted tones of mushroom, taupe and olive. All shades can be combined in an almost endless list of woodgrain designs to create a wide choice of different effects in kitchen, living rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms. 01670 718222 Email for samples: renolit.cramlington@renolit.com www.renolit.com

isitors to ZOW 2012, held in Bad Salzuflen from 6th-9th February, will find much to smile about perhaps none more so than those whose quest is to find a new edgebanding supplier. A visit to the Hranipex stand (A15, hall 21) could provide just the solution you’re looking for. On show will be the company’s complete edgebanding range from 2011, including an enriched ABS Express Collection with over 200 new décors. Hranipex holds over 900 stock décors to match with MFC boards from most of the leading European producers. These are available in thicknesses from 0.45-3mm and widths from 16-400mm - and each décor is available in 10m minimum quantity. The Express Collection also includes around 150 melamine and veneer edgings. If it’s an unusual dimension you need, Hranipex offers slitting of wood décors in widths from 16mm up to 400mm with minimum order of just one roll (in
2mm thickness minimum order is 100m and in 1mm thickness it is 200m) with production time of two to four days. For those requiring bespoke widths in smaller quantities, Hranipex can cater for your exact requirements by unwinding mother rolls - which means the whole width of the roll (400mm) can be ordered in lengths from just one metre up. Moreover, say Hranipex, they will fulfil any special requirement for a non-standard dimension in their plain colour range within one to two weeks with minimum order of just 100m. Stand visitors will also be able to see first hand the latest developments in laser technology. Although still new, thanks to a new glue application machine, Hranipex can apply a functional layer to bring laser technology to all décors from the Express Collection - in a minimum quantity of one roll. Whatever your special requirement, talk to Hranipex on +420 565 501 223 or visit Stand A15, Hall 21 at ZOW.

“W12 will be the highlight of the British Woodworking Industry’s 2012 calendar and we at Homag UK are, as always, fully supportive of this important event. The Birmingham exhibition in all its various guises has always been close to our hearts and we, more than any other company, have been keen to see this exhibition survive and prosper even through difficult times. To me it is important for the UK woodworking industry to have a quality exhibition where companies can keep abreast of technology and trends emerging from Europe and further afield. W12 will be the perfect opportunity for potential investors to view the very latest developments from the Homag Group and we will be presenting a full range of machinery and software from entry level options through to high capacity solutions – something for everyone!” Simon Brooks, Sales & Marketing Director, Homag UK
W12 comes at a crucial time Working with Wood comes in a non-Ligna year so the importance of holding the event becomes all the more relevant for British and Irish manufacturers
N
obody can argue about the fact that trading conditions are tough. The companies that find their way through and even those who strengthen their market position are those prepared to be bold. 'Think laterally', 'think outside the box' … all of these phrases apply. The thing is that market activity shifts at different economic times and many manufacturers at the moment will tell you that targeting areas of activity is essential. For this they need to be flexible in terms of their design and manufacturing abilities. This allows them to focus on the middle to upper end of particular markets when the volume end is sluggish or to move into completely new market areas. It’s called smart manufacturing. Crucially, Working with Wood comes in a non-Ligna year so the importance of holding the event becomes all the more relevant for British and Irish manufacturers. Many companies are now far more particular about the equipment they invest in. They’re looking far beyond ‘fit for purpose’. They’re looking for machinery that offers fast set-up times, software interfacing, low energy drive motors and more. At W12 Working with Wood visitors will find smart manufacturing technology at all levels under one roof with some exciting trends already emerging from exhibitors reporting back. Readers of Furniture Journal will be able to keep abreast of this news as it comes in at W12 over the coming months. One of the world’s largest machinery and technology groups, Homag, will definitely

be a must for visitors looking for methods to integrate manufacturing processes. Homag have introduced exciting new innovations in integrated production and control software. These go hand in hand with technical innovations in 5-axis CNC machining, edgebanding and automated storage systems for routers and panel saws which can result in 40% increases in production capacity so investment can be amortised in around 12 months. For anyone looking to widen their business activities Dutch widebelt sanding specialists Boere inform W12 that the design of their machines allows for amazing diversity. At Working with Wood they will be celebrating their 70th year and the ensuing expertise and experience has allowed them to develop sanding solutions as delicate as removing the aluminium coating from polycarbonate CDs for recycling … to stripping off cement, paint and other residue from scaffolding planks for re-use! In between they turn paper and waste into notice boards and also clean and brush carpet tiles for re-use at exhibitions. Looking forwards, their new electric motor fits into the CRS process meaning that only the minimum amount of power is drawn for the operation in progress. These are just two examples of signed-up exhibitors looking forward to October 2012. The “W series” of exhibitions have always seen milestones of success. At W10, for example, exhibitor Rehau held a seminar to introduce the new edgebanding material designed for bonding to the panel edge via a
laser system – important for both manufacturers and designers. As a result of W10 being used as the UK launch pad for the concept, one of the UK’s largest cabinet door manufactures became the first to install a state-of-the-art laser edgebanding machine that could apply the new material and is now enjoying phenomenal success with a range of acrylic doors with the new seamless edge. Others have quickly followed. This example also serves to underscore the vital cross-over value between W12 Working with Wood and W12 Working with Design. It’s all about bringing people and businesses together to disseminate information, exchange ideas, stimulate new methods of working and solving problems. There is no other forum where this value of face-to-face interaction can be achieved. In the months approaching the exhibition the W12 team will be bring readers further information about what they can look forward to seeing and why they should be ensuring that the dates receive priority in their diaries.
SCM will be exhibiting at W12 Working with Wood.
As we go to press another two companies have signed up to exhibit at W12:

Working with Design –

"
roduct differentiation" is becoming more than a buzz phrase in the context of the current furniture market. It’s actually the difference between winning and losing, success and failure. Any one of the top kitchen furniture manufacturers in Britain (and across Europe) today will tell you that they have to offer a highly bespoke product in order to move forwards. The UK division of one of the world’s preeminent fittings manufacturers admits the kitchen industry is difficult but, whereas they measure a 9% contraction overall, their sales are up by around 3% and a lot of this success in bucking the trend can be attributed to offering products and services that allow their customers to add special value and design/performance to their products. The board and surface materials suppliers concur. They say that important trends emerged from Interzum in May and these will now have the spotlight on them at ZOW in Germany in February. In October 2012 the W12 Working with Design exhibition will be the first and only national show to highlight and focus on these new products and trends identified by experts for the UK market. Originality will be the watchword at Working with Design and visitors can expect to see the completely new designs and products from edgebanding suppliers, surface lamination experts, solid surface exponents as well as the latest in design and CAD software with fascinating new
making a winning difference
integrated packages that make the manufacturer and designers’ projects a pleasure to accomplish. Fittings manufacturers, coating and adhesives suppliers also bring new technologies to the market via Working with Design – a vital forum for discussing advances in product technology in the context of new standards. At the same time, designers visiting Working with Design will be able to delight in an exhibition of products and ideas that, rather than placing limits and restrictions on their aspirations, open up and widen new horizons and creative opportunities. What does this all mean? It means that visitors will have a unique opportunity to view the tools of their future success in a single location. Naturally, the seamless proximity with the W12 Working with Wood technology and machinery event makes the days of 7–10 October in 2012 a must for future diary planning. The immediate uptake for space at Working with Design has meant that organisers Huddlestone have already extended available space. John Smith-Bodden of Huddlestone says: “The response to the concept of the show has been amazingly encouraging. There’s a lot of excitement about the potential opportunities that an exhibition of the format will generate.” Watch the trade press for more updates and the latest news as the W12 Working with Design exhibition continues to grow.

T
he last decade has seen a massive upsurge in the importance of warm, natural, tactile surfaces; surfaces influenced by nature which bring elements of the great outdoors into the living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms of modern homes. Highly-figured, natural timbers, roughly hewn and cross cut surfaces with ever deeper texture, planked effects - for many décor specialists, these have become the Holy Grail of the 21st century. Yet to Menen-based Decospan Group, tactile qualities, warmth, figure and naturalness have been central to everything they have done since the company was formed back in 1982. And now, through strategic acquisition and shrewd investment in new technology, Decospan Group is taking even these desirable qualities to new levels with easy-to-use
products available in quantities that are intended to match exactly with your production, large or small. Decospan Group’s young and energetic European marketing manager, Pieterjan Desmet, the grandson of the founder, is passionate and confident about the company’s latest generation of products. “Everything we do is related to 0.6mm or 2mm sliced veneer,” he enthuses. “We carry 161 wood species in stock and, regardless of whether you need one panel or 1000, we will supply in ten days. We were the first veneer manufacturer to offer 2800 x 2070mm lacquered veneered boards. We are a veneer solution, whatever problem you may have.” From their rapidly expanding base in Menen, close to the Belgian border with France, Decospan Group supplies

veneered panels, flexible veneers, ready-to-use Shinnoki (which is as easy to process as melamine) and ten species of beautifully-figured Characterwood. Here, the company’s flexible veneer, Decoflex, is also made - along with Casaleno, a contemporary alternative to wallpaper, and Par-ky flooring. Across in France, the Group’s French acquisition manufactures components from ready-to-assemble veneers to lipped table tops, preparing everything (except for the staining and finishing) to your exact requirements with minimum orders of just 50 pieces. However, if it’s oak, ash, or beech you need, Decospan’s Croatian factory specialises in cut-to-size spliced veneers from indigenous species. There’s even a Lookalike brand if your preference is a reconstituted veneer to imitate a rare exotic - and for every real wood species that’s endangered, Decospan offers an FSC certified look-alike. Between its three production facilities, Decospan Group employs around 450 personnel and lays claim to a raft of industry firsts from Formaldehyde-free, FSC compliant, ready-to-use Shinnoki panels with matching edgebanding, to flexible Decoflex veneer. Decospan’s investment in technology has provided unique grain-enhancing and splicing capabilities which can be applied to many species, adding even more depth and character when required. “If you need grooved, stained, protected, stretched or enhanced grain products, it’s all part of our service,” says Pieterjan. “Our pressing line is currently working two
shifts - that’s about 8,000 panels a day.” Decospan’s reputation for customer service - especially turnaround and delivery - is something Pieterjan is particularly proud of: “With products such as Decoflex,” he says, “we accept minimum orders of just one sheet on next day delivery - perfect if you want to veneer any thickness of panel on a curved surface at the last minute. “We have a five-strong research and development team and all the technology to test products for customers. Our team often visits customers to ensure they get the best from their machinery.” Decospan has also just finished preparing a sample box for trade customers which includes all 161 species. Decospan Group takes sustainability and environmental responsibility very, very seriously, ensuring all species are from properly managed sources, then processing them in a factory which, already the subject of a 10 million Euro investment last year, aims to have a carbon footprint of zero by 2015. “33% of our energy already comes from solar panels,” says Pieterjan, “Waste is used for heating machinery and factory heating and we have efficient lighting systems which work automatically to provide light only where and when it is needed. By 2015 we hope to have approval for our own wind turbine, which will reduce our carbon footprint to zero.” Decospan is open to discussions with customers large and small. northern ren Decorative Panels’ new factory is due to come on stream in May. In the meantime, the project is an inspiration to British industry.
I
f ever the British government needed a home-grown model to hold up as inspiration to the rest of British industry, then surely Decorative Panels must be at the top of their list. Whilst the company’s management is hardly complacent about the recessionary forces at work on world markets, their desire and determination to succeed and grow has resulted in an eyepopping £8.5 million investment in a brand new factory - at a time when many industrialists are fighting shy of investment. “We’re not complacent, that's for sure,” says Managing Director, Guy Metcalfe. “It’s evident that it's going to be a rough market for a few years yet, but the only way you can possibly open opportunities is to be as efficient as you can and to have a facility that is flexible. The new factory will allow us to get into other areas, such as producing ex-stock products. Of
course, such a level of investment brings nervousness but also opportunities. The quickest way of going backwards is to stand still. People are still buying products. If you can't get organic growth, you have to win market share and you can only do that if you are the best at what you do. That’s what the new factory is all about. We've bought the facility to grow.” Converting the heavy engineering factory into a state-of-the-art furniture component manufacturing facility demanded not only cash, a substantial portion of which Decorative Panels Group financed itself, it called upon the skills of the entire team. “We've always been keen to do this,” says Guy, speaking on behalf of himself and Chairman, Steve Gaunt. “But it’s been a team effort: Malcolm Forward, the MD of the components division, has been involved in machinery specifications

naissance on a day to day basis; our Finance Director, Tania, has been involved from the outset; Lynn Atkinson is our components sales director and she is very positive about having a new selling tool. She is very, very involved in it. As we get closer to the launch, Phil Dalton, our Group Operations Director, will become even more involved with the fit-out and evaluation of options from power supply to extraction, logistics, racking, materials availability, etc. Then, of course, all the other departments - IT function, HR, our design people - they have all been involved in the layout of the factory. It's been a real team effort headed up by Steve.” Since acquisition of the site not much more than a year ago, work on the interior has been relentless. “We’ve used local contractors throughout. The whole place is now painted. The extraction is three-
quarters finished, it's fully wired, the lighting is in, the heating is installed, the floor is being painted. The factory is painted inside, the interior cladding has been replaced and work on the exterior cladding will start soon. All exterior work starts in January and that includes stripping out and refurbishing the Marketing Design Suite, which will show product and skills from all three companies - Components, Lamination and Furniture. It will be a showcase for our current and future customers; a window onto the products we are able to offer our customers.” The new factory is one more bold, yet shrewd step in the history of a company that’s known for its foresight - and now, for its inspiration to others. Investing in newer, more efficient machinery, though often necessary, seems like a greater risk than ever. In response to this need, the Felder Group has come up with a range of finance options to spread the cost of acquiring new machinery. Mark Pope of SME Eurofinance, who works with Felder UK to offer financing solutions for woodworking machinery, answers some of the most commonly asked questions about Felder Finance. What is Felder Finance and why does the service exist? “The aim of the service is to provide a monthly payment option to help get machinery into our clients' business as quickly, easily and competitively as possible, with the minimum of fuss.” What are the benefits of using Felder finance to fund machine acquisition? “You can spread the cost of acquisition over the period you decide on, using the profits that the machinery generates to pay effectively for itself. There are no painful cash flow issues and funding is usually secured on the asset itself - no charges over your business, or property. The rates are fixed over the period and will not increase with interest rate rises. You accurately budget for your outlay and have peace of mind that these costs

G
rowing business made Lancashire-based Woodscape decide to relocate to larger more modern premises in Blackburn - just a few miles from their old workshops. The move saw the company increase its floor space from 18,000 sq. ft. to 42,000 sq. ft. allowing them to accommodate three separate group companies under one roof. Woodscape’s Managing Director, Richard Nelson, explains: “We simply outgrew our old factory and moving to the new site more than doubled our floor space. Over thirty woodworking machines had to be re-installed and a complete re-appraisal of our dust extraction requirements was necessary.” Melvyn Bathgate, sales director at Dust Control Systems said: “We were invited by Woodscape to carry out a study of their extraction needs and we put forward a distinctive proposal which centred round a filter unit which combines both reverse-jet filter and waste silo in a single space-saving package. The unit would deal with dust and chips from all 33 machines, provide waste storage and, in addition, return filtered air back into the workshop to reduce heating costs. Our proposal also included all related electrics and compressed air work as well as provision of access equipment for the installation.” The filter layout design can readily accommodate future installation of a woodwaste heater system. In addition to wood dust extraction equipment, DCS also supplied and installed a dry back spray booth. Richard Nelson says that Woodscape is more than happy with the performance of the installation and the back up from Dust Control Systems. More information: 01924 482500.

mighty minimax Three new machines with advanced features and supreme build quality join the SCM Minimax range.
T
he SCM Group's Minimax division has recently launched a range of new machines and updated existing models to give increased capacities and more features included in the standard specification. The new SCM Minimax CU 410 Elite S Combination Machine is a combination woodworking machine that guarantees ease of use, flexibility, reliability and precision. Machining is easy, thanks to a newly-positioned saw blade lifting hand wheel (in the manual version) at the front of the machine. LEDs show the rotation speed of the spindle, making the setting up of the machine easier. The sliding table is now 330mm wide. Spindle rotation has been inverted and it’s now possible to fit cutters of up to 240mm diameter to the top of the spindle itself. There’s even a new dust and shavings device guarding the planer, which now has a 410mm working width. Tables are 2200mm in length. Another new machine is the SCM Minimax Lab 300 Plus. The new saw unit, tilting 90 to 45 degrees, can now house a blade with a diameter of 315mm. With a maximum working height of the material increased to 220mm for the thicknesser, a 300mm planer width capacity, and with a maximum spindle length of 100mm, the
Lab 300 Plus is truly a high specification combination machine. The carriage, up to 270mm wide, offers increased stability, even for larger work pieces. Particular attention has been paid to ergonomics: there’s a new table opening system with 90 degree rotation towards the machine and a new scoring unit with adjustment performed outside the machine. There’s a new dust and shavings conveyor guarding the planer and the spindle moulder guard for trimming. Also new is the Advance 21 for fast precision drilling. This new single head multiple spindle drilling machine, with 21 spindles at 32mm centre distance, features a new design and a solid base that supports a 905x372mm steel worktable, to ensure precise machining to a hundredth of a millimetre, vertically or horizontally. All the controls are positioned on the front of the machine, ensuring the passage from one setting to the next is comfortable and convenient for the operator. The new extraction system, integrated in the drilling head, ensures the work area and the machine are kept clean of dust. The Advance 21 allows operators to create components, in solid wood or panels, from 10 to 85mm in height. For more details visit the website www.scmgroup-uk.com or call 0115 9770044.

innovative sergiani Increased productivity, reduced pressing times and improved gluing quality are just three of the advantages users of laminboard bars and blockboard panels will benefit from with a Sergiani press.

Sergiani’s new solution enables both individual panel production and continuous production.
horizontal pressure of 45 tons can be achieved with the new Sergiani range of presses and GSLA systems for laminboard bars and very thick blockboard panels. Sergiani, a leading press manufacturer within the SCM Group, has come up with an innovative design for the upper mobile plate and the opposing hydraulic bar which allows high pressures to be achieved. The result is increased productivity, reduced pressing times and improved gluing quality. The visible quality of the panel's surface is also improved, even for hardwoods, because the machine compensates for tolerances of the widths of the strips. The high horizontal pressure, combined with a working opening of 150mm, allows the pressing of very thick panels and laminboard bars with
the same press. With this new solution, both continuous production and individual panel work are possible. The plates can be heated with a water or oil boiler or the press may be connected to a high frequency generator for increased productivity. GSLA solutions have independent adjustments of the horizontal and vertical pressures as well as the opposing hydraulic bar, with automatic pressure recovery to guarantee correct adjustments based on the panel being machined. To increase productivity still further, Sergiani can also supply automatic lines and plants, which can reach a speed of 150metres/min when making up the strips.
