His responsibilities will include raising awareness of the Hettich Brand Values in the UK market, continuing to expand the links with current customers and to help develop relationships with new customers. Colin has a wealth of experience and is looking forward to developing the marketing strategy and plan.

Above: FINSA UK Managing Director Rafael Willisch and Area Sales Manager Graham Howard addressed over 50 Arnold Laver staff and MD Andrew Laver with a technical presentation of Superpan Décor. The high performance FINSA board product is to be distributed nationally through the network of Arnold Laver outlets. Specially developed for the MFC products market, Superpan has a central chipboard core sandwiched between two face layers of MDF.

Left: Bushboard, the UK worktop manufacturer, has made a considerable investment at the manufacturing plant in Northamptonshire. The brand new worktop line from Homag cost £1.8m but has already achieved productivity gains and expanded the manufacturing capacity. Despite its size and complexity, the new postforming line, edgebander and handling equipment took just two weeks to install and is now up and running smoothly. Stuart White, MD at Bushboard, said that the investment-led approach of recent years gave Bushboard a strong platform for future growth.

Right: The very first Corporate Social Responsibility brochure from IDS sets out the company’s commitment to the environment, business and community. The surface materials distributor has been observing the principles of CSR for years but has now set itself a series of Key Performance Indicators to measure the actions and achievements. Over the last 5 years there have been real results in reducing carbon dioxide emissions through fuel consumption and the amount of FSC and PEFC certified product has risen in the IDS portfolio to 81%.

There has been a flood of early bookings for the W12 show in October 2012, thanks to the success of the W10 event. Priority booking for the WMSA has now ended with almost 85% of the two NEC halls already booked. The exhibition is now taking bookings from outside of the WMSA. The exhibition director John Smith-Bodden was pleased with “the enthusiasm of the leading machinery names to book their places” and promised that W12 would have a fresh and exciting concept for materials and components suppliers to meet its audience. The line for W12 exhibitor bookings is 01629 530998 and new developments and floorplans are at www.w12exhibition.com

Above: A free online service for end users of woodworking machinery has been launched by Huddlestone, owners of the W12 exhibition. The site is aimed at prospective machinery buyers, with a database analysing over 500 brands across nearly 60 machine types. W12 exhibitors and WMSA members are identified within each search. John Smith-Bodden says its “precise machine specific search capability” will make Woodmex Online a valuable tool for buyers with web links to over 400 individual suppliers. www.woodmexonline.com

üddekor is once again exhibiting at Interzum in Cologne. The entire 2D Group will be presenting its decorative surfaces innovations on a 500 square metre stand. The structured finishes on flooring and furniture surfaces form one of the focal points. Topics such as “embossed in register”, real pores for finish foils and release papers will undoubtedly make a profound impression on visitors. And visitors will be treated to the trailblazing outcome of “Perfect Profile®” laser engraving. The Group with its Süddekor Art division - will be unveiling its new décor products printed using laser-engraved cylinders with print images that are even clearer and more defined than ever before. The result is completely revolutionary, highdefinition décor images. Contact Süddekor on 0049 7333 955 261 or visit www.sueddekor.de

Above: Anubis, a sleek graphite surface with slight undulations in structure and colour, which together create a high value impression with the necessary restraint.

Below: Note the trendy, lime-washed oak with rough cut and cut cathedrals on Eiche Ortega. The narrow planking and stripy finish harmonise particularly well with linearlystructured sheet metal.

Above: Trailblazing structure changes require a revolutionising of current ideas and that’s what Heike Schlosser, left, and her team of design experts are best known for. Impressive evidence of this thesis is the décor creation Oak Lafite. In its origins rather sleek with gentle planking and powerful pores, it only develops its true character strength with striking rough cut markings crossing the direction of the grain, which acquire their full depth effect and authenticity with lateral or cross-pressed surface structures. To this end, being creatively different and traditional at the same time allows a new trendsetter to conquer the market.

Left: The idea for this creation was completely unexpected at Süddekor. The extraordinarily-beautiful basis for this décor was discovered whilst visiting a sawmill in the Polish Masuria region. Elm Gamaret is convincing with its natural overall look, its elm-like play of colours, lightly undulating movement and authentic rigidity. This highly-promising décor creation is rounded off by the cautious, but accurate, use of knots. Beautiful!

inspiring ideas T

he constant demand for new ideas, colours, patterns and décors for MFC is met by the exciting range of ideas offered in the UK by Finsa with the added benefit of the sub-surface and core being the specialised Finsa Superpan board product. Manufacturers are increasingly using MFC décors to distinguish and embellish their products both outside and within the cabinets. Colour co-ordination with other materials as well as colour off-setting and contrasting are both strong trends. As a leading multi-national woodbased board manufacturer Finsa is at the cutting edge of developments in this field and have production facilities that offer the market advanced products with real advantages. Its Superpan Décor board is one such product. Almost any colour or grade of face décor is available on request and Finsa's UK base at Birkenhead on Merseyside is increasing its standard stock range by the month.

New ideas, colours, patterns and décors: a growing range from Finsa UK. Superpan Décor differs from standard MFC in important ways. It has been specially developed for the MFC products market and is now seen as the optimum substrate for the latest high gloss finishes and photo-realistic patterns and grains. The key difference is the Superpan substrate. Finsa UK's Rafael Willisch explains that Superpan is actually a chipboard central core sandwiched between two face layers of MDF. Whereas some door manufacturers, for example, have resorted to a solid MDF substrate, Superpan offers some of the qualities of MDF at the cost of chipboard. Rafael Willisch says that with the current divergence in price between chipboard and the sharply ascending cost of MDF

Superpan has found a natural position in the market that is growing more important and becoming ever more attractive to the fitted furniture sector. The MDF faces of Superpan eliminate any irregularities or pitting associated with raw chipboard and this translates into perfect laminating for the final décor - for high gloss finishes it eliminates the risk of the dreaded “orange peel” blemish. This is Superpan Décor. The Superpan component of Superpan Décor also offers other important advantages - mainly a far superior cut than standard chipboard and a greater bending strength which prevents the bending or sagging associated with chipboard. Finsa also offers Superpan in moisture-resistant P5 and structural P6. Finsa UK holds extensive stocks of Superpan and Superpan Décor and distributes the product nationwide in minimum order quantities. New wood décors, single-colour metallic décors and haptic effects - the ingredients for successful furniture design - will be shown in combination by Interprint.

debut design Interprint@Design Post 2.0: Interprint will again present itself at Cologne's top address for Interior Design during the Interzum trade fair this year.

A

Interprint will show at Design Post Cologne.

fter its enthusiastic premiere in 2009, Interprint will again exhibit in Cologne's 'home of design' during this year's Interzum trade fair. Visitors will experience the 'Combinations' exhibition theme at different sensory levels. Wall and floor exhibits, objects or media stations will make complexity interactive. Another main feature will be the exhibition of winning furniture designs from the 'openminded' design competition, which Interprint organised with the Design Post. In the Design Post, collections from the most renowned international brands will give an overview of the most interesting interior design themes - Interprint will join this group of exhibitors during its stay there. “We are looking forward to being a guest again in the Design Post,” said Salvatore Figliuzzi, Marketing and Décor Development Manager at Interprint. “Here, we have the possibility of showing our décors in a large space

by presenting not only products but also design concepts.” The main feature of ‘Combinations’ will be combinations of wood structures with brilliant single-colour metallic décors. Look out for the extended colour range and combinations of surfaces with inspiring motifs and materials. Visitors who stroll further through the Design Post will find selected designs for modular furniture systems in the 'Competition Boulevard' - the work of students from Aachen University of Applied Sciences, Saar University of Fine Arts and Strzeminski Academy of Art in Lodz. Most striking will be the unconventional approaches to laminate design of some young designers. For further information, look for Interprint at Design Post between 25th and 28th May 2011, call 0049 2932 9500, visit www.interprint.com or www.designpostkoeln.de

Designer Paul Kelley worked in collaboration with Polyrey to produce a contemporary low storage cabinet that shows off the aesthetic qualities of their Origine Premier collection. Banian Noirci, a woodgrain laminate whose deep black printed colour is overlaid with a semi matt, gently ridged texture, has been used to present a single block of colour that on closer inspection looks like a timber. A smooth Brushed Aluminium laminate was then used for the interior finish on drawers, to produce another dimension in texture and colour. his year’s ZOW saw Roma Plastik, now majority owned by Egger, introduce no fewer than 40 new ABS and PMMA/Acrylic edgings to coordinate with Egger décors, plus the very latest innovative laser edging. The new décors seek to redefine traditional woods. Oak Veneto, Bardolino Oak and Authentic Oak form the basis of Roma’s oak collection while the company’s coniferous edging, Avola Pine, has become a small collection in its own right, including the new designs Montana Larch and Schönau Larch. All wood décors are offered in different colour combinations. The wood reproductions are characterised by elements such as branches and planks. The unfinished effect appears to have come directly from the saw. With the new unicolour décors, the focus is on neutral browns, greys, and anthracites. White has moved away from pure white to bluish-white, grey and creamy combinations. For accentuation, Roma Plastik presented a new colour range similar to that of Egger - the so-called “chalk” colours, the matt finish of which is noted for its ability to combine well with woodgrains. Perfect with Egger’s Eurodekor or laminated boards is matt finished Doppia. Unicolours Velvet, Brick, Denim and Pistachio were presented as PMMA/ Acrylic edges. Roma acrylic edges offer

all the brilliance and sparkle of acrylic in unicolours which harmonise with wood décors as well as wavy metal optical effects. Roma’s new Acrimarc collection, developed in co-operation with Spanish partner, ServiCanto, brings a touch of nostalgia with chrome-like mirror effects. These edges are available in vivid unicolours with HighGloss topcoats. For flawless bonding with the new breed of edgebanders, Roma’s Laser Edging was shown applied to various base colours. Different bonding characteristics are available to suit MFC and MDF. Lead times are standard and the same minimum order as other products applies. rand new on the Salice stand at ZOW was a range of mechanisms for sliding doors by Bortuluzzi Sistemi. In fact, Salice launched no fewer than six models - all of the quality you’d expect from one of Italy’s best known furniture fittings manufacturers - and, as always with Salice, the range contains a surprise or two. Glow, for example, is a sliding mechanism for non-coplanar wing wardrobes that differentiates from traditional mechanisms through an innovative shock absorption mechanism. In use, it’s virtually invisible, hidden behind an aluminium cover. Glow also incorporates a derailment prevention device. Like the name suggests, Folder is a sliding mechanism that incorporates a folding door opening system which, rather cleverly, makes three compartments out of four accessible. Kitchen designers will find many uses for Folder. There were three versions of Slider: the Slider M System, the Slider S20 and the Slider L. The Slider M System is a coplanar fitting for medium to large runs which features silent, cushioned opening and closing. Improved load bearing means it can be used with units of up to 50kg - all from a

system that can be rendered invisible with an innovative cover. Slider S20 is one of the most innovative developments of Bortoluzzi Sistemi’s standard production. This coplanar sliding system can be applied to cupboards of all types as well as hanging elements and offers unparalleled versatility. It can be used on the base as well as on the ceiling and suits numerous configurations. If it’s larger spaces, such as wardrobes, that you manufacture, Slider L will take panels weighing up to 70kg and can be fitted to cupboards with almost any number of doors. Opening is cushioned for easy movement and silent running. For larger size panels - and compatibility with the Slider L system - Clipper is an innovative system which allows rapid assembly of frames. Patented joints enable much reduced installation time and Clipper works with both glass and wood-based panels with a thickness of 4-8mm. Finally, if it’s a vertical sliding system you want, Mover offers discreet technology to hold the door in any position without counter-balances. An impressive new collection of designs wows the crowds of ZOW on the Impress stand.

ith an inspirational design concept, Impress dressed to impress at the ZOW exhibition. With its fresh approach to trends already seen in Cologne, new interpretations like Santana Oak - already an international success - have been further developed in co-operation with Italian customers to include a striking horizontal effect. The beauty of natural oak has not been lost. Another new oak décor on show, Sheffield Oak, offers sensitive lime pore structure in an elegant design. Carefully arranged planking creates a noble quality while subtle dark grey nuances give this décor something extra. Subtle, sawn plank effects typify Fabric Ash which, though unusual and different in a market saturated with ‘me too’ designs, was attracting much attention. Novelties make rare success stories but this one seems destined to do well.

Other striking new designs in the collection included Milford Elm (a unique interpretation with calming structure, rich colour detailing and refreshing colouration) and the rustic Storming Oak, which has something of a retro feel. There were even playful new fantasy designs for those seeking to appeal to younger furnishers. For further details of all the new designs on show, call 0049 6021 4060 or visit www.impress.biz

ood is in vogue. Immaculate, polished, high gloss surfaces are giving way to a more natural hand-crafted look. And at the very forefront of the new trend was Weißbachbased décor specialist, Hornschuch, with six new designs for ZOW 2011. For the hand-crafted look, there’s little to beat the subtle planking and solid look of Sonoma Oak, with its subtly distressed finish and saw-marked appearance. Shown alongside a new ash, Fabric Ash, the strength and three-dimensional appearance of Sonoma Oak contrasts with the soft texture and tactile surface of Fabric Ash. Another new design, Wyoming, offers a classic maple with soft colour gradients, while Sheffield offers a trendy used look in colours ranging from dark to light grey. FURNITURE JOURNAL MAY 2011 • 21

Alexandr Alexandrov talks to Furniture Journal about the benefits edgebanding specialist Hranipex can offer to UK manufacturers.

hranipex on record W

hat made Hranipex decide to focus on the UK market? “It was not a decision, it was a necessity! The success on the market has been supported by a progressive growth of the company when expanding into other attractive locations. Actually, Hranipex has a production plant in the Czech Republic and branch offices in Germany, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Ukraine and Romania. Moreover, in more than 30 countries across Europe you can find Hranipex partners. How could we omit the UK? Such a market we should have entered even earlier but we did not because we have been focused on central and eastern European markets.”

W

ith so many edgebanding suppliers already well established in the UK, what does Hranipex offer that will make the UK furniture and panel sector sit up and take notice? “There are certainly some edging suppliers in the UK already. And, as you have said, they might be well established. In fact we see it as a challenge. We would like to show there is a new, fresh, better way which offers partnership and co-operation. When Jeremy Clarkson in the programme 'Top Gear', back in January this year, put a new Skoda Yeti into comparison tests with a Maybach 57 and a Ferrari 308, he designated the Yeti as the best car in the world. Sure, it's a bit surprising, but in

the tests comparing certain criteria they found the Skoda simply beats the other cars. We believe that any criteria should meet customers needs. Quick service, perfect quality, precise matching, low order quantity, all décors always available, all dimensions always available, new décors in short time, good price... Hranipex is focused on all these parameters to give any of our customers a full package to defeat their competitors.”

H

ow large is the edgebanding offer from Hranipex and how much of the company's portfolio is available for the UK market? “In present time, Hranipex Express collection contains over 650 ABS edging décors on stock. Over 150 melamine and veneer décors and special edging. We are adding new décors too quickly (almost every day) to write a precise number. All edgings are available for the UK market from 10m. Our partners can prepare for you stock in the UK as big as you need from any of Hranipex décor. Moreover Hranipex has a flexible slitting program: any wood décor from 16-205mm with minimum quantity of 100m and dispatch in 2-4 days! We also offer custom products with only 100m minimum quantity as well.”

W

hat are the most recent developments to the Hranipex range? "We are living in the era of changes.

Every day leading companies of any segment are trying to change their production to keep the distance from pursuers. Daily, leading MFC board producers are coming with fresh ideas, new décors - and new surfaces a few times per year. Hranipex is reacting to these changes immediately and so our loyal customers are sure that they will have any new ABS edging in the shortest time available. With our Express collection you can find, for example, Kronospan Fresh décors in several dimensions.”

I

s it possible to use Hranipex edgebandings on all edgebanders? “Our edgings are on the market over 17 years and we can say they have been used on most machines on the market. Homag, Ima, Ott, Holzer, Felder, Brant… Any type of machine can use our edging but, to apply edgebandings, it is also important to choose the right glue and control temperature, speed, humidity, etc. We can deliver edging, glues, cleaners, together with free advice. You can find a lot of important hints and tips in our catalogue or on our website www.hranipex.com”

W

hat message would you like to carry to UK manufacturers? “Come on, be demanding!” For more details, call Hranipex on 00420 565 501 220, www.hranipex.cz

fuse with fusion D Döllken’s new Fusion-Edge provides invisible joints without hot-melt – cutting time, increasing quality and winning accolades.

An oscillating mirror is used to fan out the round laser beam into a line as the Döllken Fusion-Edge approaches the board. This melts the Döllken Fusion-Edge functional layer before pressing it onto the board.

öllken is ushering in a new era in edge processing with the development and series production of its Fusion-Edge. Fusion-Edge is optimally suited for covering narrow surfaces using the laser bonding process, creating an invisible and durable bond with the board. Compared with conventional glued edging, the economic advantages are convincing and visual enhancement considerable. Fusion-Edge has already been awarded the M Technology Award 2008 by the International Forum Design (IF Design) Hannover. In the development of the new edging technology, Döllken has devised a co-extruded edge with a functional coating and adhesive reinforcing agent, also enlisting scientific support in the field of laser technology. The result is visually perfect through an invisible bond, requires no additional hot-melt adhesive but offers very good dimensional stability under heat and resistance to moisture. The base layer of the co-extruded edge comprises PP, ABS or PMMA, with a thickness of 0.6 to 3mm. Different materials with adhesion and cohesion properties are used for the particularly thin, integrated functional coating containing glue-like adhesion reinforcing agents. Döllken’s Fusion-Edge creates added visual value through the accurate colour match of the base and functional layers. An oscillating mirror is used to fan out the round laser beam into a line as the

Döllken Fusion-Edge approaches the board. This melts the Döllken Fusion-Edge functional layer before pressing it onto the board. The result is convincing in all respects. Compared with comparable processing methods using conventional hot melt adhesives, the strength of the joint has been improved. This is also true for the quality of the joint with different processing speeds and the tightness of the bond. A reliable and lasting bond to all conventional wood materials is guaranteed. Because the system is fully integrated, the economic advantages and reliable production resulting from use of the Döllken Fusion-Edge are exceptional. Matching ancillary materials, such as adhesives, no longer need to be kept in stock and Fusion-Edge is compatible with all conventional laser systems. Processing is simplified, time for setting up and for maintenance is minimised and the reject rate and risk of claims are reduced. Productivity and reliability are increased. Further, the accurate colour match between base and functional layer eliminates the visible joint between edge and board. Fusion-Edge is perfect for furniture, shop fitting and interiors. The entire Döllken range of colours and décors can be supplied as Fusion-Edge. For details email info@doellken.com, visit www.doellken-kv.com or call 0049 (0) 2043 9790, fax 0049 (0) 2043 979587.

banish orange peel C Looking for an answer to the problem of orange peel effect on high gloss? Take a closer look at Chemique’s new and revolutionary dry adhesive film.

Peel strength test after the decorative film is laminated on MDF substrate.

hemique has launched a revolutionary adhesive film in the UK which, they claim, closes the gap between pre-glued foils and high quality adhesive dispersions for the production of flat and membrane pressed panels and, in particular, high gloss doors. The reactive adhesive film has been specially developed for use in the production of furniture panels and has been used by some of Italy's leading membrane press door producers for the past two years. The product has a proven track record on Orma Macchine Spa and Carrozzauto SRL - Kolmag presses with heat resistance testing to 90°C by the independent test institute CATAS Italy based on the Normativi Uni 9249:1987 + A.1:1998 “Resistenza dei bordi al calore” method. As well as simplifying the production process by removing the need for wet spraying, the adhesive film gives excellent results on high gloss foils as there is no moisture that can produce the “orange peel effect”. To produce a quality finish, consistency in coat weight is key and more spraying is now done automatically by robotic systems to achieve this. The adhesive film overcomes this issue, being totally consistent in its coat weight and reactivation, giving the perfect finish without the need for expensive application equipment. Another benefit of the adhesive film is that it prevents water from penetrating

into the fibres of the MDF substrate. This makes it much easier to attach thin decorative films to lightweight MDF - and it is also easier to use alternative substrates such as plastics, as it eliminates the problems generated by wetting with an aqueous adhesive. Unlike conventional pre-glued foils, the reactive polyurethane adhesive film contains a cross linker that is released by the increase in temperature during the bonding process. In addition, the amount of cross linker used is far higher than one-component dispersions where there is a danger of the cross linker “dropping out” if too high, giving the film excellent heat resistance. As well as the aesthetic benefits, in particular with high gloss panels, the use of the adhesive film has another major advantage in that the film is attached to the foil “in house” by means of a simple laminator set at 35-38°C allowing the operator to attach the film to foil when required. This gives the flexibility of either laminating immediately prior to pressing or on a run for stock, as the stability of the product allows pre glued foils to be stored for up to six months before use. For more information about the adhesive film and the lamination process, or to view examples of doors produced in Italy by this method please contact Chemique on 01922 459321 or email enquiries@chemique.co.uk

booming biesse B Advanced technology and the supreme build quality of their products give every Biesse Group employee immense pride in the machines they build - and it’s this grass roots attention to detail that’s enabled the Group to grow into a successful global player.

iesse is booming - quite literally. Already a huge player in global woodworking machinery markets, the Italian company has gone from strength to strength with acquisitions which serve not only to underline its status but also to give it a portfolio extending from glass and stone machining to all branches of wood and panel processing. Biesse Group’s most recent acquisition was the sanding specialists Viet - a company with a 58-year pedigree - in January 2011. But Biesse Group is not about being the biggest. Take a tour of any of the Group’s factories and you get an overwhelming sense of pride in both the technology and the quality of all of its products. From grass roots up, quality really matters. Few companies would have the confidence to adopt the

Kaizen manufacturing system but the whole of the Biesse group has taken it to heart. It demands absolute faith that the person before you in the assembly line has done his job perfectly, without which the whole line stops. It’s like a quality reassurance which carries every employee’s name. Biesse has always been known for its innovation. If there’s a wood or panel processing machine that does the job you need, takes less floor space, does it quicker and more efficiently, gives you greater flexibility or faster changeover, it’s probably got Biesse Group’s name on it somewhere - that or it has Biesse Group parts inside it. Research and development is a big thing at Biesse Group and at this year’s BiesseInside & Windays event, Biesse opened its doors to show more than

At the very top of the technology ladder, Biesse’s UniWin HP WMS windows manufacturing system provides non-stop processing with zero reprocessing for all types of frame and any type of jointing. The workpiece is locked in place and the machine works around it, providing greater precision - all without the operator being present. Also new at the open days were the Rover A, a 5-axis machine for machining complex shapes with precision; the Bre.Ma EKO 902 vertical processing machine, which also offers drilling and insertion and is ideal for customised orders; the Biesse Rover AG FT, an easy-

Makita LS1216

Biesse’s SELCO WN7 The WN7 Series has been engineered from the ground up and developed using the Biesse Group’s most advanced and innovative technology solutions to improve both production efficiency and quality. The SELCO WN7 Series is made up of the 710, 730 and 750 (shown above). Across the range of these machines there are a total of four patents, meaning the technology of WN7 cannot be found in other brands. Every component is designed to be more precise, to work faster and to produce a better finish. When paired with a turning station and twin pusher, the WN7 comes into its own for it can position the material after rip cutting and perform cross cuts while loading and rotating the next batch of panels. Once the saw has aligned the panels it then performs both cross cuts and rip cuts simultaneously which results in a massive 40% increase in productivity over a standard panel saw. 01327 300366 www.biesse.co.uk

Makita’s successful standard setting slide-mitre saw range has been enhanced with DXT deep-cutting blade technology and patented Quad-Slide cutting accuracy. The DXT blade gives the new 305mm LS1216 mitre saw an increased depth of cut of 165mm and 120mm for the 260mm LS1016 mitre saw. The main beam has been redesigned with a recess in the lower profile to allow extra stock height to be accommodated, letting the blade travel down through the stock. A secondary blade protector shields the exposed section of the blade behind the main cover when the full depth of cut is required. It recedes into the beam as the blade is lowered. The new four short-run slides in the Quad-Slide system are more accurate and more precise in operation and are more stable which improves long-life accuracy. 01908 211678, www.makitauk.com

The three stage reduction gear unit and moveable rear guard provide larger capabilities enabling easy cutting of Crown moulding and skirting board.

Giben ZERO active drive The ZERO Active Drive panel saw from Giben combines speed, efficiency, accuracy, economy, reliability, low noise, safety and innovation all in one single machine. No wonder it beat 125 entries in panel sizing to win the Challengers Distinguished Achievement Award when it was first launched. It was judged the most remarkable technology innovation in the woodworking and plastics machine industry because the ZERO Active Drive is the only panel saw in the world without motors, cables or cable tracks installed on the saw carriage. The unique concept incorporates six international patents but its innovative design makes the entry level machine easy to use with very low maintenance and running costs. By demonstrating that their design and research strategy starts at zero rather than revising existing products Giben has confirmed their worldwide leadership status in panel sizing technology. 01869 244943 www.rwmachines.co.uk

FURNITURE JOURNAL MAY 2011 • 31 The sliding table panel saw is one of the most important machines in the workshop and the variety of machines and technology available can be confusing. The Genisis sliding table, however, works using the simple principle of Newton’s Third Law: “For every action, there will an equal and opposite reaction.” Any weight exerted on to the reinforced multi chambered sliding table is directly supported by a set of dumbbell rollers which run on hardened solid steel and chromed runners. A smooth gliding action is ensured by the large diameter rollers and they are resilient to the effects of the dusty environment. Every Genisis machine, from the best selling P32 to the heavy duty flagship X3 Plus, uses this sliding table principle and the complete range of panel saws caters for all sectors of the market from small to medium-sized companies. There is now an established network of sales and installation technicians and Genisis panel saws can be found in workshops across the country.

S

triebig, the leading brand of vertical panel saw in the furniture industry, is maintaining its popularity following improvements to its Control and Evolution series. The fully-automatic Control now offers an optional Electronic Positioning System (EPS) on both axes for the automatic positioning of both the length stop and saw head. This increases the saws' productivity by delivering automatic repeat strip and upper trim cutting. New standard features include a laser-supported display for totally accurate horizontal cuts - another industry 'first' for Striebig. There's also a cutting list input function, provided via a USB memory stick. The Control offers every possible option for automatic operations. With manual feeding of the saw unit eliminated, the operator's job is made easier, giving him ample time to prepare the next job. Numerous procedures are carried out at the press of a button, including locking and releasing the beam saw, setting the horizontal cutting height, plunging and swivelling the motor, locking the support rollers during sawing and fine saw blade adjustment. Where high levels of panel throughput are needed, the Control and the Evolution now offer an optional 100mm cutting depth instead of the previous 80mm.

Control made easy - with Striebig’s Control vertical panel saw.

The Evolution has many similar features to the Control, making it one of the most advanced manual panel saws available. Both series feature as standard Striebig's user-friendly “touch and saw” operating system. This delivers easy and convenient machine control through a touch screen panel that operates all of the machine's functions. Other standard features include a digital measuring

system, accurate to 0.1mm, and an adjustable precision display that can be set to an accuracy of 1.0, 0.5 or 0.1mm, according to the thickness of the panels being sized. A unique option on both models is four-sided trimming, which enables the bottom trim cut to be carried out automatically without having to lift or turn the panel. Also in the Striebig range is the entry-level Compact, with frame sizes starting at 10ft x 5ft (3100 x 1644mm), and the Standard, available in two versions. The saws, which can be wallmounted or freestanding, cut practically all wood-based sheet materials as well as timber, plaster board, plastics and aluminium panels. They guarantee impressive dust limit values well below 1mg/m3. Strong customer demand for all Striebig models is being helped by the Swiss manufacturer's decision to hold existing price levels for the third year in a row. “By not imposing any price increases again this year, Striebig are doing everything they can to help manufacturers as we come out of recession,” said Matt Pearce of TM Machinery Sales Ltd, Striebig's exclusive UK sales and service agents. As each RS Motorhome is built to the customer's own specification, there is a huge requirement for different shapes and sizes of body panels. The Chronos takes all in its stride.

A new five-axis Chronos CNC machining centre from SCM is paying dividends for RS Motorhomes.

S Motorhomes can be seen on roads all over the world. The RS Motorhome manufacturing plant is located in Goldthorpe, South Yorkshire, and covers 70,000 sq. feet, with the business moving a short distance from their previous unit 9 months ago. As each RS Motorhome is built to the customer's own specification, there is a huge requirement for different shapes and sizes of body panels and, therefore, a considerable number of patterns for making the moulds have to be made, some of which are very complex. These cannot be accommodated on the company’s standard SCM 3-axis machine due to the height of the 'Z' axis. Therefore, Mick Rowe began to search the market for a high capacity, 5-axis CNC machine. The SCM Routech Chronos machine was ordered and the machine was installed in the previous RS Motorhome factory. The Chronos has a 'X-Y' stroke of 5100 x 2200mm with the SCM aluminium multi-purpose table for locating components, jigs, patterns and clamping equipment. The 'Z' axis stroke is 1000mm, with axis transmission using precision rack and pinions, complete with backlash recovery. The 'X-Y-Z' axis speed is 130m/min.

The SCM 'Avio M' Routing Unit is a powerful 18.5kW with spindle speeds of 900-20,000rpm, and therefore provides the utmost accuracy and the highest level of finishing quality. A Rapid 12 Automatic Tool Changer with HSK 63 tool holding supplies the various tools to the spindle of the Routing Unit. After loading the table, the front access doors are closed, providing a safe area for the operator who can view the machining through large windows. Also, dust and noise levels are reduced to a minimum. Says Mick Rowe, "The Chronos is a wonderful machine and produces the patterns for all the moulds that we need to make for our body panels. We design them ourselves and they are a distinctive feature of an RS Motorhome. SCM's engineers have been fantastic, as whenever we have a problem, they can dial into our machine from anywhere to fault-find or assist with programming." Additional SCM CNC's are planned for the future as RS's orders and production increase. "We are very happy with SCM and their high level of service,” concludes Mick. For details of SCM’s range of CNC machining centres call 0115 977 0044 or visit www.scmgroup-uk.com

exclusive buys M Stockport-based Exclusive Doors is beating the recession and getting into new markets with a little help from RW Woodmachines.

ike Austin at Exclusive Doors in Stockport has built a very special working relationship with David Thompson Rowlands at RW Machines during the (almost) quarter of a century they have worked together. During that period RW has supplied all of the principal panel working and foil wrapping machines on the floor at Exclusive Doors because, as Mike Austin is quick to confirm, “strong working relations between customers and suppliers are vital in this day and age”. By way of confirmation, Mike says, “We've had the benefit of the very best impartial advice from an independent machinery supplier on the best ways to do things and that has definitely kept us ahead of the game.” An industrial chemist by training, Mike Austin got into decorative cabinet frontals just over 30 years ago and quickly became established as a trade supplier to the burgeoning cabinet manufacturing industry of the Greater Manchester area. One of his strengths, he says, has been his willingness to try new things and this has also kept him

in front of the fashion trends of the industry. Rather than cutting back in times of recession, he is investing and has taken delivery of his latest piece of new technology from RW: a Selexx Pro XL CNC router from Anderson. The new Andi joins state of the art foilwrapping technology from Orma on the Stockport-centre shop floor, together with edge finishing by Ott on their latest Shark edgebander model all from RW Machines. The Selexx Pro XL has a worktable area of 3700 x 2150mm with six pop up location pins for workpiece positioning. Processing speed in the X axis on the new machine is 50m/min with 40m/min in the Y, all located on a full rack and pinion ball screw system. An 8x tool indexing carousel addresses CW/CCW as standard with a vacuum pump clamping system for full workpiece stability under processing conditions. The flexibility, precision and speed of throughput on his new Anderson Selexx Pro has given Mike Austin the confidence to explore new trend indications from all sectors of the cabinet

ys rw manufacturing industry. “New ideas keep you ahead of the competition,” he says, “and we have to be alert to fashion whims as they arise.” The new Orma PM/CA AIR at Exclusive Doors is on the floor for that very reason. “At our level of production,” Mike adds, “the Orma system is unrivalled for its mechanical skills in dealing with gloss foils, which are probably our biggest seller right now. Pressing gloss materials is a difficult art, because the material is so very easy to mark, spoiling the finished effect.” Orma’s pressing technology for gloss deals with the problem by minimising the amount of time the membrane of the machine is in direct contact with the foil. In a matter of seconds, it achieves optimum definition on the panel, after which compressed air takes over from the membrane, completely eliminating any further physical contact. The Shark edgebander by RW’s principal, Ott, is one of the most advanced compact edging stations in

the market in terms of automation. The system provides everything needed for highly specialised and professional processing of coiled PVC edgings, including gloss of up to 3mm in thickness. Ott's boast for their coil edge trimming device is nothing less than a zero waste factor plus latest generation combi-melt gluing technology with feed speeds up to 22m/min. Everything is easily controlled from a 5.7-inch soft touch screen monitor. Now, says Mike Austin, with all the new equipment in place, Exclusive Doors will have no difficulty in turning out a full kitchen frontals layout in three to four hours. And for the next stage of his expansion programme, Mike envisages more of the same - plus, of course, a higher visibility for the company in the consumer marketplace. “It feels good to know that RW Machines is right behind us as we begin to develop new markets,” he adds. For further details, visit the RW’s website, www.rwmachines.co.uk, or call 01869 244943.

vanti Kitchens and Bedrooms is a well established designer, manufacturer and installer of kitchens and bedrooms. The Head Office and main manufacturing plant are in Lye, Stourbridge, and the company has a workforce of 120 personnel. In the factory are two beam saws and three CNC machining centres and a twin table membrane pressing facility for doors. Edge banding is carried out on two new, identical SCM single-sided automatic edgebanders, models S2000-TE. Operations director, Scott Fallon, comments, "Before last October, we ran two SCM edgebanders, models S212, that were both 12 years old. They had given us years of loyal service but, as with any machine that old, some parts were beginning to wear, so we called in SCM. Rather than spend money on a full renovation of each machine, we decided to order 2 new SCM machines with the latest technology. After discussing their exact requirements, two model S2000-TE machines were ordered. "We prefer to have 2 machines of identical specification so that we have a back-up and also, as each customer's order progresses around the factory in one batch, we can edge all the panels for the 18mm thick carcasses in one go without having to have storage areas around the factory for different size panels, rails, etc," says Scott. Each S2000-TE applies 0.8mm thick PVC edging material, supplied in roll

form or veneer edging that is subsequently painted to give a grain effect. A feed speed of 18m/min is selected, ideal for a single operator or for two operators running both machines in tandem. Output is similar to one double-sided edgebander but with more flexibility. At the infeed is an "AA" anti-adhesive unit to prevent glue sticking to the top and bottom panel surfaces. This is followed by an "RT-E" panel edge trimming device fitted with diamond cutters and with two 2.2kW motors running at 9000rpm. These heads straighten the panel edge, removing any imperfections, chips or swelling of the panel core, thus providing an excellent panel edge for gluing. Granulated hot melt glue is applied from a gluing unit with pre-melting and a glue pot. A levelling sensor ensures glue is always available. The rollfeed materials are then trimmed, scraped and buffed to give an excellent finish to the panel edges. Included with the S2000 is the Orion 220 graphic numerical control complete with PLC which provides 100 customisable programs. It also provides statistical data available for management information purposes. "The installation and service provided by SCM was excellent,” says Scott, “And we expect many years of loyal service from our two new edgebanders." E

stablished in 1973, the Coventrybased firm offers bespoke joinery work, combining traditional joinery skills with a complete range of woodworking machines. Dealing with dust and chips from a dozen machines in the 25,000 sq ft factory was, for many years, a matter of extracting waste using two paddle-blade fans and dumping woodwaste under pressure into two storage buildings. Once full, the buildings then had to be emptied, and the waste transported to landfill. “Last year we decided to investigate the feasibility and the benefits of installing a complete woodwaste-to-energy system”, says MD Lee Summers. “By September, and with the W10 exhibition approaching, we knew our objective could be realised if we invested in the best available technology.” Following W10, Dust Control Systems carried out an on-site survey and suggested a solution comprising a new dust extraction system, complete with briquetting plant and Ecogate® extraction optimisation. And, within just a few weeks, DCS engineers were on site installing the new system. The new externally-located filter is a high-efficiency Schuko EcoVar Series 2030 modular unit, which has a filter surface area of 188m 2 and has an 18.5kW clean fanset with a capacity of 21,000m3/hr. Housed adjacent to the filter Briquetting is a Schuko press is fedCompacto directly from the800 waste briquetting press, complete with 3kW storage hopper of the filter. hydraulic drive, which is fed directly

from the waste storage hopper of the filter. Up to 45kg of wood chips and sawdust per hour is compressed to form 60mm diameter briquettes, which are automatically transported to a bagging area close to the wood burning heater. In the workshops DCS fitted each machine with an automatic Ecogate ® motorised gate and sensor, which signals the Ecogate ® greenBOX 12+ controller to open or close gates. As machines come on-line or shut down, the controller automatically detects changes in extraction load and adjusts the variable speed fan drive accordingly. This means that power is only used when needed. “We are very pleased with the installation and the professional way that the DCS team carried out their work,” comments Lee Summers. “We never lost a minute of production time; they managed to keep the old dust plant running throughout and simply switched over to the new system before removing the redundant plant. We no longer buy heating oil, we have wiped out costly landfill charges and, with the anticipated reductions in electricity and gas consumption, we are confident that significant cost savings will be achieved.” Also, helping to balance the financial equation for Lol Summers Joinery, is the fact that the scheme qualified for an interest-free Carbon Trust Energy Loan. For more details call DCS on 01924 482500 or visit the company’s website at www.dcslimited.co.uk
