sicam’s 8th W
The eighth edition of Sicam, the international exhibition of components, accessories, and semi-finished products for furniture, will be held at Pordenone from 18th to 21st October.
ell before the summer holiday season got into full swing, the nine halls of Pordenone’s burgeoning Sicam exhibition were full and the layout was complete. It’s a measure of how successful this unique annual components, accessories and semi-finished products show has become in just eight short years. The organisers confirmed the rate at which exhibition spaces filled for this edition has been much faster than in previous years - a fact they put down to reasons beyond the obvious success of the exhibition. Carlo Giobbi and his team are convinced it shows the healthy status of the components and accessories sector which, at a global level, seems to have overcome the more critical moments of the last few years and now appears keen to make the most of the new openings and future markets Sicam presents. Sicam ranks as one of the easiest and most friendly shows to attend in the annual calendar. Organisation is good, road access was improved
enormously last year to facilitate swift and easy parking and the presentation within the fairground is easy to navigate and easy on the feet. It is always a busy event but organisation is slick and polished, without the queues and intense bureaucracy that dog many fairs. As usual, there will be three entrances: in hall one, alongside the new car park area; in hall nine, for visitors arriving from the city; and the usual central entrance with the main reception area, in hall five. Once inside, you can expect to see many of the big name international brands as well as a growing number of new suppliers from around the world. Anticipating the good weather that was in short supply at Sicam 2015, the organisers have moved one of the buffet restaurants to an elegant outdoor setting directly linked to pavilion nine, so, if the sun is out, you’ll have even more pleasant surroundings than usual in which to discuss business. Sicam runs from 18th until 21st October 2016. Not to be missed!

wield your influence T
he Interprint team knows how to put drama and theatre to best use in the presentation of its ideas. It excels at it. But it also excels at predicting the designs that will be future best-sellers. You only need to take a look at pages 12 and 13 of the July edition to see how many of the colours and designs that were forecast in November 2015 made a mark on the influential Salone del Mobile just a few short months later. So how does Interprint do this? The simple truth is, the Interprint team doesn’t do it alone. It doesn’t even try. It relies on your help, your expertise and your market knowledge to temper and fine-tune the ideas from its design team so they fit perfectly with demand and the most contemporary thinking in interiors. Every year, the Interprint design team invites a carefully chosen group of people from each of its key markets and presents to them a distillation of the ideas its designers have created over the year. It’s always a surprise how the designs will be presented - and often it’s an enjoyable spectacle of performing arts, which serves to underline the thinking behind each concept. Last year, it was a theatrical
presentation with dramatic stage lighting that explored a day in the life of décors. This year… I can’t tell you. Not even a hint. As always it’s a closely guarded secret. Known simply as the “Furniture Days”, the yearly presentations represent the perfect opportunity for you to see Interprint’s thinking ahead of its newest décor launches in the spring - but perhaps more importantly, it’s your opportunity to take part in the shaping of future designs. Alongside presentations are consultations, which serve to gather opinion that the designers take into consideration when deciding the décors and the colours that will be included in the new “Six Pack” - and the new unicolours that will accompany it. The Interprint “Furniture Days” will run from 31st October until 11th November 2016. There are Englishspeaking and German-speaking days and morning and afternoon presentations every day. When you get your invitation, it’s an opportunity not to be missed. Reserve your place and have your say. Wield your influence o v e r t h e d é c o r s o f t o m o r r o w. www.interprint.com

put to the test D BA Components has put David Clouting’s antifingerprint Hard Coat gloss and supermatt décors to the test - and Kieran McCracken has given it the thumbs up.
escribed as having “a similar look to acrylic panels in gloss and supermatt”, the Hard Coat PET collection from David Clouting Ltd provides significant improvement in scratch and mar resistance when compared with regular lacquers and comes at a price that makes it a realistic, cost-effective alternative to other gloss and matt panels. But just how good is it and what’s it like to work with? BA Components Ltd was one of the first to take Hard Coat décors to heart in a big way - and there’s no doubt they are impressed. “I originally heard about LG’s Hard Coat from Clair Lim in Korea,” explains BA’s Kieran McCracken. “We wanted to be one of the first door manufacturers
to bring a range of supermatt doors into the market. We went on the hunt, we asked all the foil and laminate suppliers to send samples of their supermatt finishes, then we carried out a series of tests to see which were hardwearing and which offered the best supermatt finish. There was no doubt, LG’s Hard Coat provided the best matt level and Hard Coat has a much nicer, silkier feel than the others on the market. Historically, supermatt finishes have not been very good at scratch resistance but LG’s Hard Coat really broke the barrier with its anti-scratch level. It’s very impressive.” For the moment, BA is using four of the Supermatts from the Hard Coat range (White, Light Grey, Dust Grey and
FURNITURE JOURNAL SEPTEMBER 2016 • 7
Cashmere) and three Superglosses (White, Cream, and Grey). “We thought we’d start by launching with these and possibly add more over the next year or two. We were David Clouting’s first order for Hard Coat and now they’re keeping it in stock for us. We’ve introduced four of the supermatts into each of our Zurfis and Pronto ranges and this month we’re launching our J-profile door ranges in supermatt.” Hard Coat is intended for flat lamination and BA is using PUR adhesive to ensure the best possible results. “You can’t form it,” says Kieran. “It’s not a 3d product. But from our perspective, the quality is good, it’s easy to apply and it doesn’t need any special application techniques during processing. You need
a laminating line to apply it and then edgebanders afterwards. We’re using normal settings on all our machines.” The full range of Hard Coat PET décors (currently available ex-stock from David Clouting) includes White, Pale Cream, Alabaster, Oyster, Cashmere, Mussel, Light Grey and Dust Grey in both gloss and supermatt. The Hard Coat range is available in one roll quantities (400 linear metres x 1250mm) or made to order from 3,000 linear metres (that can be a mix of supermatt and gloss). David Clouting is stocking exact colour matched edging for all the Hard Coat products. For more information contact David Clouting Ltd on 01376 518037, or visit www.davidclouting.co.uk

great gloss Want a great gloss at good price points? Take a look at the Bonlex range from Plasfilms.
H
igh gloss and supermatt are undoubtedly the industry buzzwords when it comes to décors but with so many on the market how do you differentiate? What sets them apart? Talk to Chris Green, who heads up the Plasfilms operation from Ashby de la Zouch and he’ll instantly point to the way in which Bonlex high gloss films are produced: “Bonlex is highly regarded for its extremely high gloss levels,” he says. “Typically, a gloss film is manufactured as a matt product with a gloss layer over it. Bonlex high gloss is a high gloss product before the top finishing coat is added. The top coat gives it much more depth as well as providing scratch and chemical resistance to very high levels. “Because of the unique extrusion technology used at Bonlex there are very few defects in the foil - probably the lowest in the market,” he adds. “Scratch and chemical resistance, like colour consistency, are second to none.” Having a really great product is one thing; having a range of colours that satisfies every market demand - and having them readily available from stock - is quite another. The Bonlex collection ranges from standard whites, ivories, Cappuccinos, beiges, popular colours
like Mussel, Dakar, Cashmere, light and dark greys, Stone Grey and black. Recent additions include intense high gloss colours like Mustard, Azure Blue, Burgundy and Ferrari Red. Plasfilms also offers a range of special finish products such as stainless steel, graphite and various other metallic finishes as well as a superb, mirror, first shown in the UK at KBB, that is ideal as a replacement for glass in, for example, schools and prisons. It is completely unbreakable. The other big advantage here is weight - or, rather, the lack of it. Laminate a Bonlex mirror décor to a thin board and you’ll have a perfect mirror for the backs of your cabinets and your mirror doors that’s cheaper as well as being a fraction of the weight of glass. As for availability, well, Plasfilms seem to have got that sewn up, too. Wi t h I t o c h u ’s m a s s i v e f i n a n c i a l resources behind it, Plasfilms has set up a substantial warehouse in Hinckley to provide UK manufacturers with a buffer stock, which Chris puts at more than £8 million - and it’s all available on next day delivery. I
f you’re looking for a brand new high gloss range that uses breakthrough technology to provide a mirror-like surface with exceptional scratch and UV resistance (one which comes ready laminated to an MDF substrate at a costeffective price), it’s probably time to take a closer look at Fibraplast Lucent from Finsa. Lucent, which is available in a silky smooth supermatt as well as high gloss, comes in a standard range of 16 colours and in any of the 170 décors in the Finsa Gama Duo. Minimum order quantity is just one pallet of 25 boards. It is also possible to order Lucent boards in other colours available in the market with the same minimum order quantity. Distributed by Timbmet and Lawcris, the wide range of surfaces included in Fibraplast Lucent make this product an excellent option for home interior decoration as well as for hospitality applications and shopfitting. Kitchens,
bedrooms and living rooms also benefit from Lucent, which can bring either radiance and luminosity in the form of high gloss, or cosiness and delicacy in supermatt. As modern restaurants, bars, clubs and hotels strive to offer a special atmosphere to their customers, Lucent’s place in the hospitality sector is assured, providing not only an on-trend style statement but also a touch of luxury. The range of designs and colours makes for some exciting combinations. The colour chart includes basic décors such as black and white and an array of neutral tones such as grey or cream - but look a little deeper and you’ll find a selection of beautiful woodgrains. Included are several very different oaks, pines and exotics like Ebony and Zebrano. And all are available in radiant gloss or elegant supermatt. According to Paul Thatcher, Panels Trading Director at Timbmet, “Timbmet

customers are increasingly looking for higher technical performance and ontrend décors. The new Lucent collection gives a cost-effective option and is the ideal addition to our existing range of decorative panels.” Lee Crawshaw, Key Accounts Manager for Lawcris, has also noted a very positive response from Lawcris customers: “Since launching the range, Lucent Gloss has been incredibly popular with designers who have embraced the opportunity to explore reflection with such a high gloss product. Mirroring surfaces to create both light and depth doubles the spaces they appear in. Using this high gloss collection within furniture and interior decoration goes a long way to making rooms feel naturally larger.” For more information about Lucent, contact Timbmet on 01865 860350 (www.timbmet.com) or Lawcris on 0113 217 7177 (www.lawcris.co.uk).

makes perfect sense Egger’s matching gloss and matt boards showcase the coming trend.
M
ixing and matching solid colour frontals with woodgrain accents has been gaining in popularity over recent months - but 2017 looks like being the year when the mixing and matching of solid colours and textures really comes of age. Egger UK already has plans in place to expand its newly-launched PerfectSense MDF range. “With solid colours continuing to dominate as frontals, surface texture finishes are becoming more important than ever,” commented Elliott Fairlie, the company’s head of décor development.
“Our high-quality lacquered board, PerfectSense Gloss, was a popular introduction thanks to its mirror-finish and we are looking to meet evolving customer tastes by aligning the colour palette with our high-quality PerfectSense Matt range. “PerfectSense Gloss offers high reflective values and a flawless mirror finish, along with a smooth surface that is strong in the fabrication process and particularly resistant to gloss-level changes and micro-scratches in use. At the same time, the new UV lacquer process gives the matt boards unique

properties of their own – being highly resistant to heat and abrasion, as well as having anti-fingerprint characteristics.” Egger’s gloss finishes have struck a chord with those looking for an upmarket look and feel. But as they appear more widely across the mass market, consumers are inevitably looking for something different at the higher end of the spectrum. It is here that the ‘mix and match’ concept comes into its own. Adding in Egger’s new PerfectSense Matt offers the chance to combine colour and surface finish, with contrasting textures placing the
emphasis on an opposing look and feel. “It is when you start mixing and matching contrasting gloss and matt frontals, perhaps with woodgrain accents, that things get interesting,” says Elliott. “This can provide the differentiation buyers are looking for, enabling the creation of striking and tactile designs with both a quality look and feel – and what I believe will be a major design trend in 2017.” Both versions of the super-smooth PerfectSense MDF panels come in a larger than normal sheet size of 2800 x 2070mm with a thickness of 19mm and
these larger sheet sizes really can offer both better utilisation of the board and less wastage. Coordinating ABS edging is available in 23 x 1mm and 23 x 1.3mm PMMA and some boards also come with a matching Structure 30 finish for a coordinated carcass option. Other panel thicknesses, as well as double-sided boards, are available on request and all come with a protective film on the surface of the board and on the ABS gloss edging for extra protection during handling and production. f one word sums up Ostermann’s edgebanding offer for W16, it is diversity. It’s hard to imagine a wider range of edgebanding materials available from one company but, in addition to placing emphasis at W16 on the latest edging trends, Ostermann will supplement these with adhesives, Technical Profiles and Sibu Design Surfaces. Special highlights will be the large selection of super matt and high gloss edgings, as well as metallic look edgings and unusual 3D acrylic edges. Although only introduced very recently, the Space Wave edging shown above is already becoming a design classic. Ostermann will also us W16 to demonstrate its expertise in the field of zero bondline edgings with laser, Airtec and Infratec edging options for manufacturers with laser and hot air systems. Another facet to the Ostermann stand, which perhaps you may not have seen before, is Ostermann’s range
of exclusive design boards from Sibu. Conceived for interior design and exclusive shop and trade show applications, the range includes more than 350 high-grade synthetic design boards, which provide an almost endless variety of colours and décors. Austrian made, the Sibu range includes trend-setting products like Translucent Line and Wood Line. Translucent Line has been manufactured with recesses in the sheet that allow light to pass through, making these panels ideal for situations that require backlighting. They are sure to add a sparkle to any room. The new Wood Line product range offers fashionable shades with exciting grain structure. The combination of an elegant wood appearance with modern metal strips creates a very special effect, ideal for a fresh and inspired contemporary look. when subcontracting Sandbone is reaping the benefits of subcontracting its cut, drilled and edged panel manufacturing to C Workshop and so could you!
works W
Gediminas Jasaitas has reduced his workload considerably by sending cutting lists to C Workshop.
ell-heeled and more than just discerning about the quality of the bespoke fitted bedrooms and home offices they buy, Sandbone’s clients expect something a little out of the ordinary - and Sandbone’s mission is to deliver it. Every order is different, so Sandbone’s production manager, Gediminas Jasaitas, has his work cut out translating the ideas of designer Ramiro Rocha into cutting lists and supervising the manufacture of projects that can be both demanding and complex. “When Ramiro has taken an order for a fitted bedroom wardrobe,” says Gediminas, “My job is to turn that into a technical drawing using CAD software so he can present it to the client. Once the client is happy with everything, I make the cutting list and send it to C Workshop.” Most Sandbone clients expect prompt delivery and, although Sandbone’s
workshop is well equipped with woodworking machinery and the craftsmen do undertake much of the specialised work, in order to achieve rapid turnaround and consistent quality, nowadays they subcontract pretty much all their cut and edged panel work to Borehamwood-based C Workshop. Says Gediminas, “Using C Workshop saves us a lot of time and, although we could make everything ourselves, they manufacture to a much better quality standard than we can - and they produce water-resistant edges if we need them. They have a CNC machine, so when we need CNC doors or curved components, they can make them quickly and easily, too. “One run of fitted furniture might include 300 or more individual cut, edged and, in some cases, drilled components. Once I send the cutting list by email, I can have a complete job delivered to us in four to five working days, or two to three
FURNITURE JOURNAL SEPTEMBER 2016 • 19
working days by using C Workshop’s Fast Lane service. That’s a lot faster than we could do it ourselves and it takes a lot of the weight from our shoulders. So how has Gediminas found C Workshop to work with? “They are very good,” he says. “I usually send them an Excel file but, if I need something a bit more complicated, such as CNC’d doors with mirrors behind, for example, I can send them a CAD file to work with so they can put it straight on their CNC machining centre. We have a really good relationship with C Workshop. They do everything as soon as possible. If we say it’s urgent they’ll do their best to produce what we need quicker and we always get good quality.” Does it get better than this? To find out how C Workshop could help you meet tight deadlines and take the stress out of making cut, edged and drilled components, call 020 8236 2313. Top: C Workshop is fully equipped to handle volume production of cut, drilled and edged panels, including PUR-finished components for use in kitchens and bathrooms where heat, humidity and water ingress can cause problems. Centre: A Fast Lane service is available for C Workshop clients who need top quality components urgently. Right and far right: Sandbone’s clients expect something a little out of the ordinary - and Sandbone’s mission is to deliver it.

- the latest O
n 2nd October 2016, W16 and Elements will open their doors at the NEC, bringing Britain’s only woodworking machinery and components/materials show to your doorstep. Alongside big name machinery manufacturers like SCM (see pages 29-31), Biesse (see pages 24-27), Felder (see pages 38-39), Homag, Schelling, Weinig (see page 37) and Holz-Her (see page 40), will be machinery specialists like Daltons Wadkin (see page 52), RW Machines (see pages 34-35) and TM Machinery (see page 52) - and three new and innovative zones you won’t want to miss. ‘Elements of Innovation’, sponsored by Ney, will provide a fantastic opportunity to see the latest products and design concepts as well as futuristic trends. Open to all exhibitors, a winning product will be judged in advance by a panel of industry experts. In addition, there will be a ‘W Challenge’, a four-day competition run by training experts Didac and supported by Felder and AMS machinery, that will track the progress of four apprenticeship finalists as they create a unique piece of furniture live at W16. There will be an award at the end of the competition.
And last but not least, there will be a ‘Best Practice Zone’. Working with The British Woodworking Federation, key associates will be on hand to offer you savvy business advice - and among them will be specialist recruitment agencies and apprenticeship leaders, to business finance gurus and marketing professions. Although you’ll find plenty in the pages that follow, not all the exhibitors knew exactly what would be on their stands at the time of going to press. Dalton Wadkin confirmed it would showcase an exclusive range of Cehisa edgebanders for the first time in the UK. The Cehisa Pro 12 and Cehisa Flexy edgebander will make their debuts alongside six other brands, Salvador, Wadkin, Maggi, Elcon, Altendorf and Stenner. Jowat will show its latest JowathermReaktant® 608.00 unfilled PUR hot melt adhesive for edgebanding and lamination on stand E710 alongside Riepe, the specialist in antistaticcoolant, release and cleaning agents for edgebanding. On stand E905, Vero Software is preparing to demonstrate two specialist woodworking CAD/CAM packages, Alphacam and Cabinet Vision. Look out for new and enhanced

lthough it’s not long since the referendum, there are already signs that Brexit could be prompting some manufacturers to look more closely at their own independence and what they can produce in house. Investment in machinery for the production of handle-less doors and drawer fronts is a logical extension for any panel processor to consider, as it gives back total control over product quality and choice of materials. When you look at it more closely, the softforming process involved in producing profiled doors and J-pulls is really quite a familiar one - not at all the black art some might like you to believe - but, of course, like any production process, there are issues you need to be aware of if you want to achieve consistent quality. “There are four basic steps to the soft-forming process,” explains Biesse’s Robbie O’Neill. “The first section of the machine is dedicated to profiling; then comes the gluing section where, unlike edgebanding, the glue is applied to the tape; the third section is the softforming section; and finally comes the finishing section, where the top, the bottom and sometimes the end are trimmed.” There are a number of variables relating to the materials you might want to use and the quality of the product you want to produce and they can have quite a profound effect on how the machine you choose is specified. “Sometimes it’s more about what materials are available to you and what you want to use than how much a machine costs. The wider the scope of the machine spec., the wider its scope to work with cheaper materials.” Most manufacturers will want to produce a number of different profiles like straight edges and bevels but, in the case of a J-pull, the profile is quite deep and it has an overhang, which can be quite thin. “If you machine it using a single cutter block, there is a
risk that the inertia of the cutter will tear and loosen the fibres, which has a knock on effect on the quality of finish,” says Robbie. “The basic principal is you need a rough cut, then a fine cut. If your chipboard quality is high that works 100%. If you can’t rely on it, or you’re buying a lower cost board, there are advantages to adding a third, or even a fourth cutter block, so you reduce vibration, graduate the removal of stock better and apply less force. That will reduce the chance of loosening fibres and give you a finish that’s better, even with a thinner tape and a lower grade board.” Biesse’s solution - the Stream Soft is equipped with three (sometimes four) machining heads to produce a fine finish and it will process PVC or ABS as well as PP in various thicknesses using EVA or PUR. All the major edgebanding producers supply a softforming tape. Polypropylene is the most forgiving. Apply heat to PVC and ABS and as they cool they will try to return to their original shape, potentially causing problems with the finish - but there may be reasons you want to stay with PVC, or ABS. All are perfectly workable if your machine is specified to cope with them but what factors, other than your own familiarity with a particular product line and what’s readily available from stock, could influence your choice? When producing a profiled door, the glue is applied to the tape in semiliquid form and as you apply it, it can pick up loose fibres that can exacerbate the risk of telegraphing. PVC and ABS already carry a higher risk of telegraphing. In order to overcome this, you can use a thicker tape, which telegraphs less, or machine the profile to a finer finish - or you could do both. “If you opt for a thick tape but only have a machine with two profiling motors, there’s a possibility the tape
will be too thick to mould around the sharp turns involved in a J-pull,” says Robbie. “Some curves will be almost 90 degrees. If the tape is 0.8mm thick, for example, it can’t fold easily around a tight radius. It will try to pull back because of the residual heat and its elastic nature. On Biesse machines, we have a device we call a scorer. It sits between the tape magazine and the glue application and it creates a V-groove in the back of the tape, which enables it to fold rather than bend. “The scorer also solves another potential problem: if you take a piece of plastic tape in a dark colour and bend it sharply, the plastic will distort and you’ll get a different colour. It will whiten where it stretches. To stop that, we can apply heat to reactivate the tape and that will return the colour but sometimes that doesn’t work and the tape pulls out of the profile instead. If you score the tape, the problem ceases to exist and the tape can pass easily through to the glue head.
Robbie O'Neill

Top: Soft-forming pressure section, Bottom Left: Gluing Section, Bottom Right: Finishing Section
“The tapes used for handle-less doors can be quite wide - typically 65mm. If you apply a tape like that on a normal edgebander the glue will start going hard. On a soft-former, the length of the pressure station can be as much as three metres if you are using a PUR glue and the glue needs to be kept liquid. To do that, we use hot air blowers that apply heat all the way down the pressure station. Because everybody wants their own unique profile, we design each process individually - and that includes tailoring the soft-forming section - but once you have the key factors in place, like the right tape, the right glue and the right chipboard, the process works consistently. Part of the commissioning process is tweaking the glue application and making sure the tape is aligned to the pressure section but after that it’s a simple process because there’s not much variance in it.”
While a lot of flexibility can be built into the machine, a very clear idea of both the product you want to produce especially the quality - and the materials you want to work with are essential from the outset. If you want to work with lower grade boards and still use thinner tapes, you might want to consider increasing the number of profiling heads in the first stage of the machine. If your aim is to use PUR, you’ll need a dedicated PUR section, which can be quite long compared with an EVA section. If J-pulls are on your list, you’ll need a profile depth of 35-45mm and the trimming units will need to be offset (the bottom trimmer unit will be projected nearly 45 mm out on the track where the one on the return will be about 20mm out). For some applications a single-sided Stream Soft might be adequate, while for others a
double-sided machine might be more appropriate - and that will demand a rolling track rather than a Triplex chain. The choice of tape, board and glue also needs to be decided in co-operation with your suppliers in order to achieve the best possible solution for your particular market. It’s all pretty fundamental stuff to Biesse, since each machine is designed for a specific purpose and built to order. But get all of these right and you might just find that bringing all your production under one roof, rather than buying in bars and trimming them, gives you not only better control over the quality you want to produce and the delivery times you can offer but also better margins as the market changes. ith its new soft-forming process, formally introduced to the furniture manufacturing market at Xylexpo 2016, SCM Group member, Stefani, has brought the manufacturing of J-profiles and customised panel edges within reach of the small to medium-sized w o r ks ho p. Rema rka b l y, S t e f a n i ’s engineers have achieved this with a machine of just 11 metres in length that offers switching between any of up to four different profiles in under half an hour - or five to ten minutes if you opt for the automatic version. “We have worked closely with leading European companies, including Rehau and MKT, testing materials in order to find the best possible combinations of material, thickness and decoration,” commented Stefani’s edgebanding product manager, Johnny De Leonardis. “For the processing of J-profiles with edge thicknesses between 0.5 and 0.8mm, which are the most difficult to achieve, we complete the whole process in a machine of just 11 metres. The 11-metre machine will also
process 60 and 45-degree profiles as well as step profiles [+90 degree step or -90 degree step] with an edge thickness of 1.5-2mm and the process feed speed with either chipboard or MDF is 2025m/min.” There are four versions of the machine, all of which facilitate the use of either EVA or PU adhesive and melamine tapes, PVC, PP, ABS tapes and both soft and hard veneer with a maximum edge thickness of 3mm. “For the highest quality results, the materials must have a specific formulation, suitable for application to complex surfaces,” says Johnny. “We have developed a new set of parameters and specific processing steps that enables soft-forming of materials that are rigid and not easily deformed, such as ABS and PP. “First, we create the shape with milling units. We can fit up to four profiles in the milling section. These can be semi-automatic tools with quick button release, which use HSK technology, or selection can be fully automatic with NC vertical and horizontal positioning.

Centre Left: The pressure zone is set up with a combination of air-cooled pads and rollers, which is different for each profile. Up to 4 profiles can be produced and changeover can be manual or automatic. Bottom Left: Different profiles can be achieved by using the same profiling units thanks to HSK quick release tools.
“Glue is applied to the shaped surface in a pressure zone, which can be anything from 1.5 metres to 4.5 metres, depending on the thickness of the edge to be applied and the shape. The pressure zone can be fitted with up to four different shapes and it will work with both EVA and PUR adhesive. The big advantage of the Stefani system is that the pressure zone required for PUR application is only 1.5 metres in length.” The edges and chamfers are finished in the finishing section of the machine before finishing of the remaining sides. “Depending on the shape being machined, the position of the finishing units - the fine trimming, corner rounding and edge-scraping units - can be positioned manually or automatically. We use a standard corner rounding unit with either a 45 degree profile or a tilted profile
of up to 60 degrees, or, in the case of complex shapes like the J-shape or the step, we use NC corner rounding.” With its Solution, Evolution One, Evolution SSB and Evolution SB softforming machines, Stefani has taken tried and tested technology, brought it right up to the minute and done so in a relatively compact machine that will enable you to bring trend-setting panel edge design for fascias, drawers, tops and boxes in house for a lot less than you might think. And once you have a Stefani soft-former, Johnny confirms it’s a simple matter of adding tools to the various zones if you want to change the shapes you can process in line with changing fashion. No wonder Stefani won the Xylexpo XIA Grand Jury prize in May. To find out more about the range contact SCM GB on 0115 977 0044.

Working in close partnership with SCM Group member, Stefani, Kleiberit’s specialists have introduced what’s believed to be a world first: a PUR adhesive that enables J-Pull handles to be produced using soft-forming technology.
ack in the early 1970s, when fitted kitchens really started to take off in a big way, the laminate-faced slab door was pretty much all that was available - and atop each chipboard fascia, one of the most common handle designs was a screwed-on metal profile that ran its whole width. What goes around often comes around and today, that same, simple handle style has gone through something of a renaissance. What’s emerged is a trendsetting, sleek and highly desirable handle that’s part of the fascia and matches the décor on the face: the J-Pull. Until very recently, the only way to make a J-Pull handle was to route the top edge of a foil-finished MDF fascia and paint it so it matched the décor on the face. That was until the Kleiberit team, headed up by Antonio Daltri from Kleiberit Italy, came up with a stroke of genius and entered talks with SCM to develop an innovative project that would result in a revolution in the production of the J-Pull. The result of their collaboration was the development of a new kind of soft-former – and a new kind of adhesive technology with the properties necessary to produce J-Pull handles using not paint but, for the very first time, softforming technology. The problem Kleiberit needed to overcome was how to bond an edgebanding material so it remained secure in the valley of a routed J-Pull. “Antonio Daltri and his team had to develop an adhesive that was specifically formulated for this new J-handle technology,” explains Kleiberit’s Bradly Larkan. “The process

requires a PUR with an extremely strong green tack that enables the edgebanding material to be bonded securely in the valley of the J-shape during the soft-forming process.” After many months of development work, the solution was found: a high viscosity PUR hotmelt adhesive that’s now available as Kleiberit 707.9.06 and guarantees users of the new soft-forming technology safe and easy processing. “Nobody had a solution with PUR,” continues Bradly. “Because 707.9.06 is a PUR adhesive, all the advantages of a PUR are present in a J-Pull. J-Pull doors finished with this new cross-linkable adhesive technology benefit from being waterproof and heat-resistant, so they are ideal for use in bathrooms, where conditions are warm, damp and humid, and for use in kitchens near hot stoves, tumble driers and washing machines.” Recognition for their innovation and the joint contribution they have made in the field of J-shaped edges came to Kleiberit and Stefani at Xylexpo 2016 when the presentation of a new soft-forming system in combination with Kleiberit PUR hotmelts won them the Xylexpo Innovation Award 2016 in the Panel Processing category. Commenting in Milan, the President of Xylexpo, Lorenzo Primulti added his personal applause: “It gives an excellent response to market requirements for the edge banding of ergonomic profiles, using polyurethane glues for applications involving narrow radii and thick edges.” For full details: 01530 836699.

Head to the RW stand at W16 to see the latest custom-built Dubhe throughfeed drilling line from Stema.
hen it comes to throughfeed drilling, Stema’s reputation for coming up with designs for innovative machines and custombuilding them so they perform exactly the task required is approaching legendary. There was a specially-built machine of unusual design at W14 and there will be another on the RW stand (F510) at W16: this time a Dubhe double module high speed drilling and machining centre. Designed for high speed production of cabinet carcase components, the Dubhe double module is a new concept of machine that’s capable of producing six to eight pieces every minute on a throughfeed basis. The first of the two modules performs a drilling cycle underneath the panel using two drilling heads, each equipped with two rows of
11 x 32 spindles. All the spindles operate independently. The second module takes care of side boring, also with two heads equipped with 11 x 32 independent spindles. What’s unique about it - and this is being patented by Stema - is a special system in the first module, which enables the drilling cycle to be performed across the whole surface of the panel from below in one pass. The big benefit of the Dubhe double module machine compared with a traditional throughfeed drilling line, where setup times are often a lengthy process, is the incredibly short time it takes to set the Dubhe up. In fact, it’s so short that it makes batch size one processing possible. Stema has achieved the maximum level of automation by using state-of-the-art electronics in order to guarantee absolute

ughfeed at w16 precision in positioning of the axes - and the result is very little play and a very fast and accurate machine. Stema has chosen the latest generation Sysmac platform for the Dubhe. It manages up to 64 axes; single, interpolated, linear and rotary axes; provides master-slave functions with control on a zero mark and the EtherCat network will connect with up to 192 slaves. Included in the package are CAD drawing functions as well as a tool wear database and, for enhanced productivity, full optimisation of drilling strokes and movement of axes. If you think all this makes it a complicated machine to operate, you’d be wrong: the operator scans a barcode label from the panel and this initiates movement of one side of the frame, which changes to the width of the
panel. Once placed on the feed roller, the panel is fed automatically into the first module, where all drilling is carried out on the underside. After completion, the panel is fed automatically into the second module. It’s here that edge drillings are carried out. Once complete, it is returned to the operator via an outfeed roller and conveyor. The Dubhe double module machine is no lightweight. Of gantry-type design, the solid steel frame is electrowelded with reinforced ribbing to guarantee vibration-free operation and ensure that, even in situations where dynamic stress is high (such as when the machine is simultaneously positioning machining heads at movement speeds which can reach 90m/min), it won’t buckle. The rest of the machine is similarly built: all
the machining heads slide in the three axes (X, Y and Z), driven by brushless motors and rack and pinion systems in the X axis and recirculating ball screws in the Y and Z axes. The design is sufficiently flexible to allow numerous configurations so pretty much any throughfeed drilling requirement (or level of investment) can be catered for. You could, for example, opt for two side units and different insertion groups for dowelling; or you could have a different type of shelf support that facilitates two lower units, each with two drilling heads. The Dubhe double module machine can be equipped with up to four drilling heads, if need be. To find out more, visit stand F510 at W16 or call RW Woodmachines on 01869 244943.

We’re not yet at liberty to divulge which brands Quin Global has been working with - that will be a surprise for visitors to the W16 stand but we can tell you a little about each of the three adhesives. The first of the new products is TensorGrip L19, a high performance laminate and edging adhesive that’s been formulated to give you peace of mind when bonding laminates. “With L19 both the end user and laminate manufacturer have the peace of mind that the substrates and adhesives are compatible when used as directed,” says Darren. “Used with MDF and woodbased substrates, it provides superior bond strength across a wide spectrum of decorative surfaces.” For shopfitting and commercial fitouts, Quin Global’s second new launch is TensorGrip L90, a unique formulation designed to speed up the process of solid surface bonding. Its primary purpose is for use in shopfitting applications and commercial fit-outs, especially reception
counters. “L90 enables a 3mm solid surface material to be bonded to a substrate without the need for clamping and long setting times.” TensorGrip L24 is the last of the three new formulations. Developed in conjunction with a leading veneers manufacturer, it’s an exceptionally high integrity spray contact formulation. “Tack off time is four to six minutes,” says Darren. “There’s no need for pressing. You just need to use a roller to apply pressure to the glue line. A full cure is achieved within eight hours.” The big difference between a traditional contact adhesive and TensorGrip L24 is the formulation Quin Global has used. “A traditional contact adhesive can cause issues with veneer bonding when the adhesive reacts with the lacquer that’s subsequently used on the veneer,” explains Darren. “In TensorGrip L24, we’ve used a formulation that doesn’t react with the lacquers and eradicated the problem completely in an adhesive with an exceptionally short tack-off time.”
All three new products will be available in 22ltr/17kg canisters and 500ml aerosol cans. A 500ml aerosol will bond about eight square metres - a bonded area of around four square metres. A 22ltr canister will bond around 75 square metres. To find out who Quin Global has been working in partnership with, you’ll need to visit stand K505 at W16 but, if you’d like to find out more about the three new adhesives ahead of W16 and see a video that shows just how effective they really are, take a picture of the interactive advertisement on the right using Furniture Journal’s free-todownload Clickable Paper app and it will take you straight there. Instructions on how to download and use the app are on the contents page of this edition. If you like what you see on the app, you might also want to ask about Quin Global’s loyalty programme. Every purchase earns you points, which can be redeemed against tools, canisters, etc. Call 08453 8122333 or visit www.quinglobal.com

n today’s market, if you don’t compete, you lose out - and nowhere is this more true than the interiors market, where more and more contracts are calling for a complete package of f u r n i t u r e a n d j o i n e r y. M o s t manufacturers have software to speed up the manufacturing process and convert designs that are fed directly to a CNC. But, faced with a complete custom interior project you know your workshop has the skills to make, how long will the process of quoting take and how confident are you that you’ll get every aspect of your costings right? If you feel you could use a little help, maybe it’s time to look at CAD+T’s solutions. CAD+T software is designed for custom-made projects. You input the information once and all other necessary data, from design to installation, is created by the software automatically. The heart of the system is the drawing, which is built on AutoCAD®. The CAD+T add-on gives you the facility to input parts directly in 3D and still be able to work on them in 2D. On these parts, information about materials, finishes, edges, profiles, hardware, etc., can be
saved. The final drawing consists of more than just lines and text, it actually understands what you are drawing and produces a cutting list as well as a bill of materials and many other documents. Other production lists, such as material order reports, packing lists, etc., can also be generated. CAD+T has developed a highly sophisticated interface for CNC machines, which separates all workpieces according to material and sends the information directly to the machines. The working method is determined by the materials you choose. Oversizes, starting points, tools and all other information are chosen a u t o m a t i c a l l y. C A D + T ’s s y s t e m interfaces with all common three and five-axis CNC machines as well as with tools for lipping, vacuum pod positioning, etc. A specialised nesting tool that even recognises grain direction in the various components, generates the information for nesting machines. In order to offer a complete solution, CAD+T software provides support with commercial and operational information, like material

From drawing to manufacturing - seamlessly. CAD+T’s software consists of around 60 different modules for furniture manufacturing, interior designer and furniture retailers. Modular in structure, it’s easy to customise and easy to price. You only pay what you really need.
Founded in 1990, CAD+T has its head office in Austria and now has branches in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Australia, UAE and Thailand.
consumption, wastage, labour hours, capacity planning, prices for materials and so forth, then it automatically combines it with information from the drawing and a company-specific database of prices, capacities, etc. CAD+T has included classic modules for estimation and costing, Technical Order Management for cutting lists, BOM and productions lists as well as Operations Control for automatic time calculations but the software goes further: you can even assign certain jobs to certain employees. Jobs,
deadlines, orders and deliveries are part of the system and can be synchronised with Outlook, which makes you completely independent of the office. There are additional modules from CRM and Estimation to invoice control, stock management, part tracking and picking/shipping lists, according to your company’s needs. Everything can be barcode driven for instant feedback, so you’ll know exactly where every part of a project is within the production process, what the material costs are, what’s been done and
what is still to do. Armed with this information, you’ll know exactly where you make and where you lose money, where you need to invest, or where you need to initiate changes in order to increase the productivity. Cleverly, all this information is extrapolated from the drawing, saving up to 30% of your time and cutting errors by up to 80%. It stands to reason that you’ll be able to handle and quote for more projects with higher profit margins at the same time. For a demonstration visit CAD+T at W16 or search for www.cadt-solutions.com
