Registrations are now open for Ideal Bathrooms Race to Mauritius

THE RACE IS ON In 2015, bathroom retailers took part in Ideal Bathrooms’ Race to Dubai incentive. This year, Ideal Bathrooms is going a step further with the new Race To Mauritius.

T

here are tropical beaches, pure white sand and sapphire waters for beach lovers. There’s a world of natural wonder, culture, history, adventure, sports, spas and shopping. Tropical luxury and extravagance at its best – and Ideal Bathrooms’ retailers could be there. The new Race To Mauritius incentive – which works in the same way as the Race To Dubai – will be running for the year of 2016, with all orders placed from the 1st January going towards an individual’s turnover target. The more the retailer orders, the closer they move to joining Ideal Bathrooms for a stunning trip of a lifetime. Following registration, customers are set an individual target and are then ready to

start their race. Each customer has their own unique race microsite to check their progress over the year until the finish date of 24th December 2016. “The concept of ‘The Race to…’ certainly struck a chord with our retailers,” says Ideal Bathrooms’ Commercial Director, Danielle Lillis. “This year’s incentive retains the same theme which proved so exciting last year and the beauty and luxury on offer in Mauritius will undoubtedly be a huge attraction to all those with a love for travel to amazing destinations. We look forward to receiving registrations from existing and new customers who would like to join us in our Race to Mauritius.” To sign up for the Race to Mauritius simply visit Mauritius.idealbathrooms.com

THE GENERATION GAME Modern designs inspired by yesterday’s traditions

Catering for increasing demand for dovetail drawer boxes, Landau Holdings Brooklands (pictured) and Natures Choice door collections are available in 90mm or 150mm standard sizes and bespoke specifications. Made from solid oak, each design is finished to fit a 450mm depth runner, Blum Tandem runners and Grass Dynapro slide system. 01482 440 680 www.landau.uk.com

“Our traditional kitchen doors are in demand, outselling high-gloss kitchen doors by more than 50 per cent. Homeowners are choosing beautiful shaker kitchen doors or traditional in-frame styles inspired by handcrafted techniques and designs from the Georgian and Victorian period. Designers are swaying towards designs that marry modern and traditional elements, such as painted kitchens, rather than oak and a mix and match of different handles, door styles and colours.”

“Traditional kitchens have moved on from the cathedral style doors in dubious oak effects and we are a million miles from the days in which we thought shaker style in cream was cutting edge. Today’s designs have contemporary styling, an eclectic palette and top-notch functionality. “Demand for traditional style ranges is currently reaching 30% of sales when compared to contemporary designs. It’s a fast growing sector and based on the current projectorary, is quickly catching up with more modern designs. When put in the context of history, we are clearly experiencing a shift. Twenty years ago the traditional kitchen was the market leader, taking a 70% share of installations. That figure dropped ten years later when modern kitchens became 85% of sales and traditional style hit an all time low of just 15%. The current figures indicate yet another shift, but remember that today’s ranges incorporate the best of both design camps and therefore a more equal division is anticipated.”

“Despite a lot of emphasis being placed on contemporary, minimalist kitchen design, the market for traditional styles has never really gone away. The reason for the popularity of traditional styled kitchens is the fact that they are so welcoming; the kitchen is very much the heart of the home and classically styled kitchens with natural materials to add warmth and all the traditional trimmings really is good to come home too. The rise in popularity of home baking, thanks to TV shows such as the Great British Bake Off, has also had a big influence on this market. Customers come to us asking for a kitchen in the same cornflower blue as the one used by Mary Berry on the show, and a full walk-in larder in the most traditional sense is the latest must-have storage requirement.” Steve Tough Commercial Sales Director, MasterClass Kitchens

A WIDE RANGE Range cookers remain an aspirational product for many consumers but they are now infinitely more attainable, with appliances to suit every kitchen and budget available.

ith the range cooker market stretching considerably to appeal to a much wider demographic, the recent launch of the Glen Dimplex Home Appliances: Range Cooking division incorporating Stoves, Belling, New World and bringing Britannia and Bertazzoni brands into the fold - was timely. GDHA now offers products across the whole price and specification spectrum - from the affordable New World to the premium-priced Bertazzoni. Steve Dickson, Head of Category for Range at GDHA, says, “There are many reasons why consumers have fallen in love with range cooking - high capacity, the flexibility of multiple ovens and, of course, the aesthetic. But limited kitchen space has often prevented many people from buying a range cooker. Now, manufacturers such as Stoves have expanded their collections to include not only the traditional 90, 100 and 110cm sized appliances but also ’mini range’ products for those without sufficient space.

For more information visit www.gdha.com

“It is an exciting time in the range cooker market. Our affordable models such as the New World Vision are proving to be very popular but, as the economy recovers, retailers are seeing an increase at the premium end of the market with customers happy to spend a lot more on a big ticket item. The addition of the Britannia and Bertazzonni brands to the GDHA portfolio means we really can meet any requirement.” GDHA will be showcasing its Range Cooking division at this year’s KBB Birmingham show. Located in Hall 20, Stand K95, the large GDHA stand will feature a collection of range cookers encompassing Stoves, Belling, New World, Britannia and Bertazzoni, plus hoods from designer cooker hood brand, Best. The show will be the launch pad for some new Bertazzoni products, which have recently been upgraded and expanded to include larger size models and stand visitors will also have the opportunity to see Britannia’s newly launched retro-style side-by-side cooling range, Breeze.

MARKET INSIGHT What are the latest sales predictions for electric, gas and induction hobs in the UK? “The market for electric hobs consistently outsells gas and we can surmise that this is partly to do with the increased popularity of induction. However, sales of gas hobs are still strong in the UK and we predict that this will continue for the foreseeable future; something that differs from the rest of Europe as electric is the hob type of choice in most other mainland European countries. “Notable are the volume increases in hobs over 60cm in both categories, with a 33.2% rise for electric hobs, and 18.3% for gas versions. This trend is set to continue, thanks in the main to the fashion for kitchens with island units or peninsulas, where surface cooking is situated away from the oven, or group of ovens and compacts, which are often banked within tall cabinetry. In direct relation to the trend for wider hobs, the figures for cookers hoods over 60cm have also risen by 18.6% year on year, with chimney and island hoods up by 15.1%.” Owain Harrison Sales & Marketing, Hoover Candy Baumatic (Built-in)

3

white good market. Firstly, consumers are less likely to replace a cooker hood in the way they might upgrade an oven, hob or microwave for example. Secondly, the cooker hood market is very much reliant on the first installation, and therefore the market is slower than most. However, models that are buoyant and drive growth are those that are in vogue with the open plan living and entertaining space of today which are the chimney and island-type hoods; these are very much on-trend and create a focus and statement in the modern kitchen. This has led to manufacturers to continually strive to improve their appliance portfolio and this has increased innovation in the market place.” Jennifer Spragg Senior Brand Manager, Whirlpool

How is technology being used to develop the latest hobs and hoods? “Automatic functions such as power boosts on induction hobs are important features as are pause keys, which allow the user a short break of up to ten minutes. Multi-split zone induction hobs are one of the latest inventions - the user can cook practically anywhere on the surface within the hob zone boundaries and this can work whether there are four pans or one extra large pot. When you consider gas, gas-on-glass models will reflect the styling of an induction hob, with removable pan supports for easy cleaning and stainless steel models, which have been produced with only one sheet of steel, make this the perfect choice for easy cleaning in the kitchen.

3. Whirlpool’s ACM 928 BA has double Flexizone technology. It is designed to accommodate pans up to 38cm in length by linking each front and back zone together to maintain a consistent temperature across the whole zone. When switching to a smaller pan, the system detects which part of the zone is being used and automatically activates it. It also features innovative 6th Sense® technology that automatically sets the ideal power setting. 0344 815 8989• www.whirlpool.co.uk

“The latest cooker hoods are more powerful than ever but still have the ability to run incredibly quietly, which is perfect for a busy kitchen that is used by the family and for entertaining purposes. The demand for quieter appliances is growing as the trend for open-plan kitchens increases. An extremely quiet extractor can be switched on without distracting the conversation.” Danny Lay Sales Director, Caple

How do premium hood brands differentiate their products from the middle-market? “The main difference between premium brands and middle market is where the cooker hoods are used. Originally a functional appliance for the kitchen, there’s now a vast range of premium designer ranges on offer, reflecting the kitchen and lifestyle trends for open plan living. Premium hoods are mainly concealed in the ceiling or in the cupboard and downdrafts for the island units, or the counter extractors. Whereas for the middle market, it is still mainly the stainless steel wall units, which are used as wall hoods. Where space is at a premium and a large open plan kitchen isn’t an option, these can be a more economical option.” Geoff Baker Chairman, Air Uno UK

MARKET INSIGHT The Bathroom Shop’s Andrew Crellen talks to K&BJ about bathroom design from the eye of the independent retailer. How has the market for showers, screens and panels changed over the last 10 years and how are manufactures satisfying this change? “When it comes to the bathroom, personalised solutions have become more of a standard request, seeing graphical shower panels, custom-made screens and multi-sensory shower heads come to the fore. With manufacturers bringing this new level of luxury and heightened performance, we are seeing a greater need for flexible design and wetroom schemes have definitely helped answer this demand. Providing the homeowner with a multitude of design options, a wetroom has been recognised as a limitless proposition. Features such as doorless entry, frameless and semi-frameless enclosures or full wetroom systems (avoiding the need for a bath) are now available to cater to any size bathroom space, layout and brief. It is safe to say the bathroom has undergone a massive transformation over the last ten years: no longer a place of necessity, instead a sanctuary to relax and indulge.

“Technology has definitely entered the bathroom this year, with extravagant shower heads and body jets taking centre stage in terms of showering. Rain, waterfall, mist and chromotherapy are all design features which are elevating the once humble shower into a high performance solution for the bathroom. We must also recognise that it is these premium products which provide us retailers with a unique point of difference to easily reach our more discerning clientele, as well as offer significant benefits to the end user.”

How has the market adapted to smaller bathrooms? “The bathroom market is saturated with products that help the consumer optimise as much space as they can. As space has become more and more precious, wetrooms have grown in popularity seeing the market introduce innovative wet room systems specifically designed to accommodate any bathroom space. For compact or awkward bathrooms, full wetroom designs have become the ideal solution to eradicate the need for a bath and still provide a multi-functional area that is both on-trend and high performance. For slightly bigger bathrooms or for those who like to protect their modesty, the market offers single and double-ended shower panels which allow consumers to define areas in the bathroom in a stylish, yet practical way.

3. Ideal Standard’s Concept Freedom range now includes Easybox Slim thermostatic shower mixers, with new metal lever handles. The new range is DDA compliant and consists of three models: shower mixer (A6377AA pictured), bath shower mixer and shower with diverter, offering new solutions for accessible bathrooms. 01482 346461 • www.ideal-standard.co.uk

The shower industry has notably adapted to this change in bathroom size, seeing manufacturers offer a wide variety of shower enclosures or wet room designs that can be adapted to fit almost any size and shape.”

What advice can you give to retailers looking to display the latest showers, screens and panels in their showroom? “Consumers have copious amounts of products to choose from when looking to purchase bathroom products; this means the service provided in the showroom has to be personalised to each individual. The advantage of having a retail space, especially on the high street, is being able to engage directly with our customers. Reliable, face-to-face contact is instrumental to retailers as staff can guide customers along their journey to creating their own perfect bathroom. Consumers will also have the chance to spy before they buy, where they can touch, look and experience the products firsthand. For example they are able to visualise their potential new bathroom, as opposed to an image or diagram. Ultimately, your staff need to offer their inside knowledge to engage and hopefully sway the customer towards a purchase.”

MARKET INSIGHT K&BJ talks to Mark Larden, Geberit’s Managing Director about the UK’s growing wall-hung and back-to-wall WC market.

4

“Wall-hung sanitaryware currently accounts for around 6-7 per cent of the market in the UK. This figure is growing steadily, although of course there is a long way to go before its popularity reaches that of Europe, where wall-hung dominates. “Geberit recently surveyed a cross-section of the UK population to find out their thoughts on bathroom design, with 33 per cent of adults telling us that they would consider bathroom fittings that are hung on the wall as an effective space saving solution. Noise is another factor influencing this thought, particularly with the growing trend for en-suites added on to master bedrooms. More than half of respondents to the survey said they would change the WC for a quieter one if they could, with 11% saying they would opt for wall-hung sanitaryware as the ideal solution to the problem of noisy flushing. “There are many reasons to be confident in the potential growth of wall-hung in the UK, not least because of the space-saving advantages it offers, something that is increasingly important to consumers as the bathroom itself becomes ever smaller. The trend for hotel-inspired bathrooms is also helping the upward trajectory of this sector, as consumers seek to emulate the minimal, luxurious finish they’ve enjoyed while staying in hotels on their travels. “Traditionally, consumers have been reluctant to opt for wall-hung as they had concerns over labour costs and maintenance. However, the latest systems on the market have ensured that these concerns are eradicated. Installers find wall-hung sanitaryware simple to fit, while maintenance is also easy should it be needed, via the flush plate so as not to disturb the room’s décor in any way. This is of course where investing in a quality brand really pays off, as they can offer systems suitable for all applications and offer a great deal of flexibility to make installation and maintenance straightforward.”

3. RAK’s Resort Bathroom Collection includes six WC configurations - from space saving designs to comfort heights – which feature RAK’s next generation rimless design, Hygiene+. Matching basins, baths, tiles and accessories are also available alongside back-to-wall and wall hung models WCs. 01730 237 850 • www.rakceramics.co.uk 4.
