AN

INTERNATIONAL

AFFAIR

F

or Mr and Mrs Laing, it was the space and views that appealed to them when they bought their Ayrshire property. Originally three apartments, the couple knocked down walls to create more space to create their dream kitchen. Mrs Laing had very specific requirements and wanted her kitchen to embrace the views and natural light available to them. As well as a walk-in pantry, she also wanted the kitchen to offer a practical space to cook and prepare food whilst also offering an area where Mr Laing could mix drinks, prepare breakfast or relax in the kitchen without either of them getting in each others way. Essentially, the couple wanted a ‘his’ and ‘hers’ kitchen – something award-winning kitchen retailer, Kitchens International, were keen to design. With a clear brief in mind, Helen Taylor, Senior Sales Designer at Kitchens International, segregated the kitchen design to fulfil the requirements of both Mr and Mrs Laing, whilst keeping the natural flow of the kitchen in place.

To do his, Helen incorporated a curved, organic shaped island from Stoneham kitchens, which the Laings had admired in the Glasgow showroom months before. The food preparation area was situated by the pantry, whilst the water and ice dispenser were placed on ‘his’ side of the room to offer the couple their own space. “The design was carefully planned to make the most of the view and natural light, with the TV and dining area located near the window,” explains Helen. Exotic wood veneers and warm materials were also suggested to give the space a more homely and comfortable look. “The biggest challenge from a design point of view was to fill the space without overfilling it. Working with such a large space - the footprint of the kitchen alone covers 7m by 6m – the different zones had to work independently whilst still flowing together to create one whole kitchen.” Helen adds, “The stunning island really did make this kitchen. The clients are delighted with the end result and the design allows them to use their ‘his’ and ‘hers’ kitchen with ease.”

K&B Journal talks to Helen Taylor, Senior Designer at Kitchens International about her unique ‘his and hers’ kitchen design…

traditional kitchens kitchen & bathroom journal february 2018 • 23 “It’s all about the finish! Paint effects are transforming the traditional kitchen in to more of a ‘design classic’, with in-frame panel doors and slab drawer combinations dominating this choice of finish. Additionally, matt finishes are adding a greater sense of luxury, design appeal and point of difference to most interior schemes. With no signs of abating, matt finishes continue to gain in popularity across the UK market and Daval believes this is a result of mixed material interior trends coming to the fore and providing the homeowner with a vast array of counterbalancing materials and finishes that are transferable across any kitchen style: wood, stone and metallic effects.” Simon Bodsworth, Managing Director for Daval

Whether you can’t decide between two colours or you feel two colour define your personality the most, the best way to solve this in the trendiest way is by using both. BERTAZZONI

ON THE MENU Italian kitchen appliance manufacturer Bertazzoni has supported the transformation of a much-loved community centre in Pentre, South Wales, with the donation of one of its eye-catching range cookers. The Bertazzoni Master Series 90cm range cooker was gifted to the Canolfan Pentre in the Rhondda Valley – a facility which helps to keep locals united, providing a space for community, social and learning events. Set up by mumof-three, Buffy Williams, the Canolfan Pentre aimed to lift community spirit after a run of closures in the village, including the school and post office. Formerly known as Pentre Day Centre, the facility is funded in-part by public donations and relies on support from volunteers. The refurbishment provided a much-needed face-lift of the hub’s very small, basic kitchen which caters for a range of groups, such as after-school clubs and nursery groups. Following the donation Buffy said: “We’re so overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity and you have no idea what the range cooker has done for us. We’re extremely grateful to Bertazzoni for the brand-new range cooker. The refurbishment has injected a new lease of life into the centre and we’re looking forward to welcoming visitors to the revitalised facility in the future.”

Falmec is proud to unveil Circle.Tech, a patented revolutionary system. Unlike traditional extractor systems, the Circle.Tech filtering unit works horizontally rather than vertically, allowing the air to be expelled evenly through the filters surrounding the motor. Its design offers an enhanced surface area for extraction rates of up to 86%. This compares with as little as 20% for standard charcoal filters. The even distribution of air also reduces turbulence, and therefore noise for an extremely quiet extraction system (47-67dB). Pictured: Loop 01206 849 900 • www.falmec.co.uk

EXTRACTING STYLE

Technology and design work hand in hand to create stunningly beautiful extraction hoods…

1

“Recirculation extractors are becoming a popular choice, particularly for those who are renovating their kitchen. They provide greater installation freedom for even the smallest or most awkwardly shaped kitchens. Technology in the extractor sector has developed to provide solutions that favour a more aesthetically pleasing kitchen design whilst allowing maximum flexibility of installation in the kitchen. Many brands now offer extractors that recirculate the air rather than ducting it outside, which eliminates the need for external ducts and thus improves insulation in the home. This prevents energy wastage from central heating in the home.” Fiona Barker-Scott, Brand Manager at Falmec

1. AEG’s Hob2Hood adapts automatically to keep your kitchen free of steam and vapours. Providing task lighting and illuminating the hob below is a 40W Neon light, while the washable aluminium grease filter has been designed to make cleaning easy. 0117 938 1900 • www.caple.co.uk “All manufacturers continually look at ways to refine the functionality of extraction to meet the needs of the modern consumer. Given we increasingly live in open plan spaces I think one of the most important points is curbing noise, particularly for those living within a smaller footprint. Our answer to this was to introduce a dedicated Greenline standard for hoods featuring brushless motors which not only reduce noise, but also offer an 85% energy saving compared to standard motors.” Jeanette Ward, Communications Manager, Franke

“The industrial look has been given a softer, more feminine edge of late. Industrial, urban spaces known for their clean, sleek lines and contemporary appearance are being replaced with more chic, eclectic designs where old meets new. There’s a real juxtaposition of materials with aged, distressed metals alongside smooth, high shine coppers and rose golds, polished concrete and tarnished wood. Industrial is a look that remains popular but what’s exciting about the current trend is the sense of the unexpected. Anything goes, allowing you to create that urban vibe but with bags of personality.” Claire O’Brien, Head of Design at BCT

British Ceramic Tile’s new HD Galvanised collection typifies the industrial trend and has been created using British Ceramic Tile’s latest XD high definition printer. Ten years ago the Water Efficient Product Labelling Scheme (WEPLS) launched and now, as we head out of the EU, there’s a European Water Label on the horizon. Some of our products are on the register, happily in the green categories, and some aren’t registered yet. And until manufacturers are forced to stop making the lessefficient products that consumers want, then they will continue to be made.” Stuart Gizzi, Inta
