SHOW & TELL AT
Top picks from KBB’s kitchen and bathroom exhibitors…
K
BB Birmingham 2016 has been deemed the “best show yet” by its organisers and with record visitors numbers and re-bookings, they could well be right. The four-day event, which attracted over 15,500 visitors, featured over 35% more exhibitors than 2014, all of which demonstrated a high calibre of product ranges, innovative solutions and ideas for the future of the industry. The show’s success has reaffirmed that economic and trading conditions are significantly improving and support was shown by achieving the strongest re-book figures of 65%, for KBB Birmingham 2018.
This year’s KBB not only included key industry names such as BSH, Blum, Ideal Standard, Crosswater, Roper Rhodes and Mereway Kitchens but also international brands Schüller, Bora, Neolith, Bagno Design and Scavolini. Positive feedback for KBB Birmingham 2016 has been overwhelming with many citing it as having a ‘buzzing’ and ‘buoyant’ atmosphere, whilst Graham Jones, Sales and Marketing Director at Trend Interiors deemed KBB Birmingham to be “the glue that binds the industry together.” Jon Johnston, Sales Director at KBB Birmingham concluded, “This year’s KBB Birmingham has been an outstanding
success for everyone involved and I am hugely proud of the team that helped to deliver our best show yet. KBB 2016 has reaffirmed that manufacturers are producing incredibly forward-facing and innovative solutions for the industry, and people are responding positively to these changes. We are also extremely pleased with our record re-book figures for KBB Birmingham 2018, and the team are now looking ahead to the new Kitchen and Bathroom Design event in London next year – which we hope to be as successful as our Birmingham edition.”

Schüller POS, Marketing and PR
WORD ON THE HIGH STREET Building on its brand awareness, Schüller used KBB to turn retailer’s individual voices into a collective shout.
W
e knew that 2016 was going to be the biggest KBB exhibition ever seen and that the Schüller display needed to be as unique as the brand,” begins Wayne Dance, Managing Director of Inhouse. “So we asked the question that every independent retailer must ask on a regular basis: How do we make sure our display stands out amongst the sea of other manufacturers?” Schüller answered this question with its high street showroom stand design, which had its very own shop front and windows. Inside, the InHouse team were on hand to guide you through the latest innovations and the support available to retailers. Lead generation: Ask a consumer to name a national kitchen brand and they will flounder. It is this lack of brand awareness that puts the independent retailer at risk of losing
potential business to larger sheds and national stores with bottomless advertising budgets. “Our vision is to position Schüller as the brand that springs to mind when a consumer first considers a new kitchen and it’s already working,” explains Wayne. “The search term ‘Schüller kitchens’ has increased by 380% in the last 18 months alone and when consumers pick up the phone, we direct them to their nearest independent retailer. We build the Schüller brand so that retailers can sell kitchens that consumers recognise.” Consumer education: In the independent sector, you have to compete against sheds and self-assembly stores with loud sales messages. As independent Schüller retailers, its easy to forget that consumers might not know the difference between ‘them’ and ‘us’ so its Schüller’s job to educate them. Wayne explains, “Consumers don’t necessarily know that rigid cabinets are glued and dowelled and individually tested for strength and durability, so we tell them. We let them know that every Schüller kitchen is manufactured to order and this is the only way to avoid the colour mismatch one can expect in
flat-pack kitchens. Consumers probably don’t know that German engineering ensures their kitchen will be looking as good in five years time as it does today. We tell them that too. We know that when we are confident in the level of quality and value that we offer, the customer becomes confident in choosing you.” Referrals and recommendations: Independent retailers thrive on their personal reputation and it’s critical for sustained growth. We want your customers to recommend you and there’s no better time to do that than in the honeymoon phase of a new installation. At this stage they will be keen to show off their new kitchen so Schüller has created everything you need to help your customers host their own ‘Come Dine With Me’ party. Wayne adds, “It’s a great excuse to celebrate their new kitchen and helps put your business at the front of people’s minds. We have even developed an international collection of recipes for the cookery book shelf so that your details are always close to hand. And with Schüller kitchens discretely branded, you can be sure that your reputation will be secured for many years to come.”

H
erbert Direct has exhibited at KBB Birmingham for the first time. The family-owned components distributor used the exhibition as a platform to launch a new range of Orion Grey wire components to the British market. With almost 15 years of experience in the fittings industry, the Horsham-based distributor has built its reputation on being able to source high quality, on-trend components for the KBB industry. Working closely with Italian wirework manufacturer Sige, the long-standing distributor has launched Orion Grey frames and mechanisms to its comprehensive wirework range, challenging the industry standard. John Herbert, Managing Director of Herbert Direct explains, “The old silver grey frames and mechanisms have been the norm in the industry for over 25 years. With our new range, we’re pushing the boundaries of design and the results speak for themselves.” Herbert Direct now offers a complete, comprehensive range of larders, pull-out
baskets, base mechanisms, waste bins and corner solutions all available in the new contemporary finish. In addition to this, the new Orion Grey powder-coated flat wire has been used on the Infinity Plus baskets. Designed by Sige to compliment the leading European drawer manufacturers, the design is exclusively available through Herbert Direct and offers a unique and exclusive option in wirework products. The Orion Grey textured solid base also adds a point of difference to the normal solid bases commonly found. John adds, “KBB has given us an ideal opportunity to introduce our latest products to the KBB market and to showcase our wide range of wirework, bespoke handles and tambours. As the main distributors for Sige in the UK, we work with them to create new products exclusively designed for the UK market. This allows us to offer a unique package of product, service and technical support for this brand that isn’t available from anyone else in the UK.”

TILE STYLE KBB Birmingham drives sales for British Ceramic Tile
T
he House of British Ceramic Tile enjoyed a successful show at kbb Birmingham 2016, driving sales across its new product collections as well as developing leads with a network of new kitchen and bathroom retailers. The launch of the new Laura Ashley was a particular hit with the retail audience, tapping into the UK’s affection for British brands. Laura Ashley’s Wicker floor tile proved to be the hero product, which is testament to the rising popularity of floor tiles within the home.
British Ceramic Tile’s new HD Ultra and 3D HD also caused a ripple of excitement amongst the retail audience. A commercially successful range across a range of markets from retailers through to specification channels, the new additions to the HD collection showcased the company’s latest developments in inkjet printing pushing the boundaries of designs with stunning structured tiles and detailed marble-effects. Jayne Adamson, Marketing Manager at British Ceramic Tile, says: “KBB 2016 has been our most successful to date, with orders exceeding our projections. Feedback to the new launches was positive and very encouraging with retailers listing new lines of floor and wall tiles.
“A key objective for the company was to develop relationships with a wider network of kitchen and bathroom retailers. The show provided us with an ideal platform to do just that, with new customers responding well to our trend-led collections and design ethos. Feedback suggests that kitchen and bathroom retailers are increasingly wanting to become a one stop shop that supplies consumers with everything they need to transform their rooms.” Also unveiled at KBB Birmingham was the UK’s first National Tile Week, which is being sponsored by British Ceramic Tile, and the company’s new Retailer Club, both of which created a talking point amongst retailers.

Pelipal Ed
Pelipal’s back-to-wall range has been developed to UK specifications with built-in furniture which can be made to measure.
New for 2016 is the addition of a 644mm wide mineral marble washbasin to the Balto collection, with matching mirrors and mirrored cabinets with LED lighting.
The new Krion washbasin, made from natural materials and a small percentage of synthetic resins.
REFLECTING SUCCESS New products designed solely for the UK and a strong marketing message attracted independent retailers to Pelipal’s KBB stand.
I
ndependent bathroom retailers that work with Pelipal know the key to success is working with a brand that doesn’t just meet expectations, but exceeds them and this is exactly what Pelipal aims to do. Pelipal’s bathroom furniture collection allows retailers to offer high-end European design and quality with an affordable price tag. As a result, Pelipal has announced rapid and continual growth in the UK. This is just the starting point for the independent UK retailers. It’s not simply holding the top spot that makes the Pelipal
brand so appealing. Despite phenomenal success, Pelipal makes it their job to listen to the UK retailer and understand their specific needs. They go to extra lengths to create the perfect portfolio for local markets. This year sees the Solitaire 6001 range introduced to the Pelipal collection. Designed specifically for the UK market, this new addition follows in the footsteps of the successful back-to-wall system. Pelipal retailers also benefit from UK based support from the InHouse team, a supplier website to drive sales alongside a completely free, full Sales and Marketing programme that provides invaluable trade and consumer publicity cover and directs enquiries. Options for individually branded marketing support materials are also available. This provides Pelipal retailers with a level of commitment rarely seen with other brands. When retailers stepped onto the Pelipal stand at this year’s 2016 KBB Show in
Birmingham, they saw a vast selection of innovative, stylish and functional designs. Beautiful wood finishes, gloss whites and neutral palettes were the back drop for innovations that include the rather clever Music Zone, bringing Bluetooth connectivity to the bathroom. Yet this is a mere snapshot of the staggering array of options available. A wide selection of furniture styles, sizes and finishes sat alongside a multitude of innovative LED options, washbasins and freestanding furniture which proved popular with visitors. Wayne Dance, Managing Director of InHouse adds, “With Pelipal, every customer that walks through the showroom door can have a high quality and uniquely designed bathroom at a price point they can afford. This is why we say that Pelipal is probably the best bathroom brand in the world.”

21ST BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS Marking its 21st birthday at KBB, Showerwall has launched a distinctive new range and an industry first.
T
o celebrate its 21st birthday, Showerwall, the waterproof bathroom wallpanelling brand, demonstrated the design strides made with practical surfacing material with the launch of the premium Showerwall Infinity range and seven new designs at KBB. Showerwall’s newly launched Infinity is aimed squarely at high-end retailers and designers looking for something different. The 14 new designs offer a refreshingly
new departure into bold colours, metallics and graphic prints that provide a trendier, urban look, together with the option of totally bespoke digital print designs. Infinity includes six ‘Whispering Grass’ décors of Bergamot, Metallic Grey, Snow White, Clementine, Black and Teal which have been hand selected and endorsed by the award-winning surfaces designer, Lars Contzen, to reflect the very latest design trends. Recognising the trend importance of matt textures in the bathroom, Infinity is the first bathroom wallpanelling range to offer a supermatt texture from the highly innovative surface material, Fenix NTM®. The on-trend supermatt surface boasts low light reflectivity, soft touch, anti-fingerprint and antibacterial properties. It’s also available in two
colourways, Rosa Colorado and Grigio Efeso. Seven new décors have also been previewed for the Design Selection including Urban Concrete, Silver Travertine, Black Glacial, Copper Quartz, Oxidised Copper, Volterra and Silver Bronx, a 3D snakeskin effect attracting the attention of the crowds. A new sealant, Sureseal, that provides a four-point seal system, completes the new additions. Claire Lambert, Product Director for Showerwall adds, “We feel the market is ready for a fresh injection of ideas that will appeal to a broader demographic of customers from young to old. Between our standard Showerwall range and the bolder Infinity range, we are offering a wealth of choice that can cater for a wide range of tastes and projects.”

“Soft muted colour palettes such as grey and stone continue to be popular choices for kitchen doors. There is a noticeable move towards grained finishes which are tactile and therefore add a sense of character to the kitchen. Timber is being increasingly used in the contemporary setting, but is now taking on more of a natural form rather than being combined with a gloss finish.” Steve Tough, Commercial Sales Director, Masterclass Kitchens

“The introduction of atypical materials and finishes has become the latest look in interior fashion, compelling the need for more unexpected, advantageous kitchen design at the high end of the market. As such, two tone kitchens remain a front runner for kitchen designers, creating a real design advantage to them.” Dieter Berends, Senior Designer, Urban Interior

“Top end appliances have the edge over middle or entry levels in terms of build quality, longevity, performance, looks, capacities and special features. Sub-Zero & Wolf appliances are built to last a minimum of 20 years. When you start to calculate the price per year, the higher quality brand appliances are not quite as expensive as they first seem.” Craig Davies, Managing Director, Sub-Zero “Our most trend conscious customers are looking for a design that is modern and minimalist, but with warmth and individuality. Our designers are achieving this by mixing cabinetry from different premium ranges and making a feature out of textures and finishes.” Bernard Otulakowski, Managing Director, SieMatic UK

The filler strip positioned below the base and wall units work as shelves and open compartments

Foodshelf has given rise to a ‘new horizontal linearity’ punctuated by a series of wood-effect shelves cross the length of the kitchen

hink open spaces. Think clean, contemporary lines. Imagine the openness of space reflected in furniture that makes a feature of open and closed areas. And imagine a seamless style that flows easily, transcending traditional boundaries between cooking and living areas. That’s the idea behind Scavolini’s bold, new Foodshelf - a highly customisable modular furniture system that draws its inspiration from a redefined relationship between the kitchen and the living room. Designed by top international designer Ora-ïto, Scavolini’s Foodshelf abandons the typical vertical approach to kitchen design, replacing it with a new horizontal linearity in the form of wood-effect shelves. Even the filler strip beneath base units, like that in wall units, works as a shelf or an open compartment. Low units, more commonly associated with living spaces, play a central role in the design of Foodshelf,

and include wall units measuring 18 to 36cm. Base units have also undergone dimensional reinterpretation, while open compartments, available in different colours, are another innovation that can be freely combined with T, U and L-shaped partition elements. Foodshelf includes many novel ideas, such as open-fronted larder units and units with concealed “switch” doors. Units can be opened with a specially designed handle or a recessed profile grip, coloured to match the doors. Complementing the warm aesthetics of open wood structures, Ora-ïto has chosen matt decorative melamine doors in a range of four colours as well as gloss and matt lacquers. The same finishes and colours are also available for the open compartments and other elements. The Foodshelf programme also includes a wide selection of furnishing ideas for the living area with solutions that can be integrated into the kitchen or remain independent.

With super-thin edges, the asymmetric washbasin bowl features an integrated storage with a tactile surface that provides semi-dry areas, ideal for storing soap and cosmetics.
A NEW DIMENSION Laufen pushes the boundaries of modern basin design with its new collections designed exclusively by Konstantic Grcic and Toan Nguyen.
I
ncreasingly chosen as a focal point of the bathroom, the washbasin needs to appeal aesthetically as well as practically. Where strong geometric lines have gone before, softer shapes, slim profiles and gentle curves are now being seen, with new manufacturing techniques enabling these design demands to be met. Laufen’s patented ceramic material, SaphirKeramik, allows for fine and sharp edges to be created, with production of easy to clean ceramic basins in a greater variety of shapes and sizes than have previously been possible with ceramic. Designed by Konstantic Grcic, Val from Laufen is a new bathroom collection which realises the design potential of SaphirKeramik. The Munich-based designer is not only one of today’s most influential designers, but is often
recognised for his ability to take new materials and production methods to their limits. With SaphirKeramik Laufen gave Grcic the opportunity to push back, and at the same time redefine the design boundaries for ceramics in the bathroom. “SaphirKeramik’s key elements – its precision, thin-wall thicknesses, small radii – gave us interesting challenges,” begins Grcic. “We tried different directions when creating Val, but eventually, the important turning point was to go into the surface and create patterns with a fine definition. These surface treatments and patterns are partly decoration, partly functional. They prevent objects placed on them from slipping and leaving stains. As for the products’ forms, I wanted them to be simple, functional, more architectural and not too expressive.
basin design kitchen & bathroom journal april 2016 • 47 “When they’re installed in a bathroom the products are not seen in isolation but are part of many other things around them. When it comes to bathroom furniture, I believe the simpler it is, the better it works.” Joining Grcic in his exploration of the design capabilities of Laufen’s SaphirKeramik is French designer Toan Nguyen, who has collaborated with the manufacturer to create two new countertop washbasins in the Ino collection. The new Ino washbasin has a recessed but integrated shelf, with an upwardsweeping back wall ideal for storing cosmetics and bathroom accessories. “By not having a wide rim, as we know from conventional washbasins, we were able to create a more generous basin”, explains Nguyen. “However, for the design I did not only concentrate on the volume, but rather on the lines and the surfaces of the washbasin.” Ino also includes wall-mounted washbasins with widths of 450mm and 560mm, with gentle curves creating an intriguing contrast to the angular body at the back. Thanks to their extremely thin walls the bowls appear extremely generous, radiating lightness. Nevertheless, the hard, rigid, and easy-to-clean SaphirKeramik ensures that it is more than suitable for robust, everyday use. Nguyen adds, “In the washbasins and bowls it is not only a question of surfaces, because the washbasins are made of ceramic material and have all the advantages of this material, it is a matter of materiality in the sense of a physical quality which you can touch and feel.”
The Val washbasin from Laufen has been crafted from the manufacturer’s revolutionary SaphirKeramik.
