“Building regulations, such as Part G which covers sanitation, water safety and water efficiency, play a big part in driving tap trends in the new build sector. Mainstream builders must ensure that they are creating kitchens which are stylish yet costeffective, whilst meeting regulations too. High-end developers are more driven by adding value to the property, with the inclusion of more elaborate and stylish hi-tech kitchen brassware.” Barbara Osborne, Product Manager, Methven UK

“Consumers are becoming increasingly conscious of the waste they create and the impact waste has on the environment. Kettles account for nearly a third (27 per cent) of all electricity used in domestic cooking and just one millimetre of lime scale requires seven per cent more energy to boil water, reflecting the purchase trend for specialist taps.” Kevin Carr, UK Sales Manager, InSinkErator

A COOL CUSTOMER Things are hotting up in the cooling market. Accounting for 26% of the overall white goods sector, advanced technology has seen the markets worth increase to a staggering £857 million.

Baumatic’s BWC885BGL 41 bottle built-in dual temperature electronic wine cabinet has adjustable upper and lower zones that are ambient temperatures for sparkling, white and red wines. “Over the past few years, the big fashion story in cooling has been the introduction of the wine cabinet to the kitchen. For a long time these appliances were only available at very high price points and aimed toward premium kitchens but they are now firmly available in the mid-market sector.” Owain Harrison, UK head of Sales and Marketing Built-in, Hoover Candy Baumatic

“Thermo-electric wine cabinets are old news as these models are only capable of cooling to 15ºC below the ambient temperature. This can affect the flavour of your wine during extreme temperatures. Wine cabinets that mimic the conditions of a wine cellar are the latest trend as they ensure your wine remains at a constant temperature, humidity and away from light. Compressor cooling systems maintain the right temperature regardless of the ambient room temperature, allowing wine to retain its complex flavours.” Danny Lay, Managing Director, Caple

1. The Electrolux side by side cooling centre includes a fridge, freezer and wine cooler in a sleek integrated design. The stainless steel fridge ensures even temperature and humidity control, whilst FrostFree technology in the freezer ends the tedious task of defrosting. The full length wine cellar can hold 98 75cl bottles of wine and maintains the ideal humidity levels so you can preserve both red and white wines in optimum conditions. 03445 613 613

“As shopping habits change from a planned weekly shop to more frequent, smaller shops and with a heightened focus on food wastage, we are beginning to see that consumers are looking to their refrigeration appliances to provide features that can support this trend. Technology has enabled the industry to create highly sophisticated products that maintain perfect food storage environments in the home and extended foods lifespan.” Neil Pooley, Kitchen Category Manager, Miele

cooling 10 • kitchen & bathroom journal june 2016

“The refrigeration market is back at a pre-crisis level, still just short of 2007. The fridge freezer market is showing the most growth, up 3.3 per cent and this is driven by an increased demand for large size 60cm fridge freezers, and side by side models, which are up 13.4 per cent. The rise in sales of side by side models is partially fuelled by the replacement cycle as well as consumers purchasing new kitchens and houses.” Steve Macdonald, Marketing Director of Freestanding Division, Hoover Candy UK

Whirlpool Interactive Kitchen of the Future splashback

TOMORROW’S WORLD Whirlpool imagines the kitchen of the future

T

here are more than 2.5 billion people worldwide who are connected to the Internet. Back in 2008, the number of Internet-connected things overtook the number of people in the world, and at this moment, there are over 10 billion things connected to the Internet. This ever-increasing ‘Internet of Things’ continues to grow every single minute. Whirlpool has foreseen the future kitchen as a natural progression from where we are now and developed a concept kitchen to demonstrate where we might be in the near future. The Whirlpool Interactive Kitchen of the Future concept features an interactive splash back and cooktop that connects the

consumer to their social networks, favourite websites and recipes, for meal and guest planning with no additional devices or books required. The interactive splash back features a personalised touch screen which facilitates live ‘chats’ with mum for secret recipe tips and offers wine recommendations for the selected meal, while the future kitchen hob lists the dishes’ ingredients and tells you where to place each saucepan automatically. The Whirlpool concept kitchen simulates a day in the life in a smart kitchen. Whirlpool foresees sensor technology, which can measure the nutritional content in a packed lunch and an interactive kitchen, which can monitor the arrival time of the school bus and suggest breakfast ideas based on how much time a parent has to get their children out the door. A signal from the baby monitor notes when it’s time to warm the baby’s bottle on For more information please visit www.whirlpool.co.uk

the induction cooktop, and the interactive display shows cooking alerts and reminders to flip or stir ingredients when required. Smart vessels will sense their contents and automatically heat or cool to the ideal temperature, and the presence of packaged goods will auto-set a microwave. Alessandro Finetto, Senior Director of Global Consumer Design, Whirlpool EMEA, adds, “It is important that the most powerful innovations are inspired by human behaviours and are a real need. It is important that new products should empower and positively impact daily living; otherwise it’s simply technology for its own sake.” The future, according to Whirlpool, envisages more products that help you enjoy living today, releasing time to spend with friends and family, and with one foot going forward to tomorrow.

“Due to the marketplace offering more detailed and informative product information, consumers are now becoming more adept at recognising the difference in calibres, and I believe British manufacturing has been responsible for this change in consumer perception.” David Cole, Sales Director, Perrin & Rowe “When we made the decision to return the manufacture of our cooking appliances back to the UK in 2009, there were a number of raised eyebrows. It went against the accepted norm in the white goods industry, which was for brands to manufacture cheaply abroad. However, returning the manufacture of our products back to the UK has given us greater control over quality and allowed us to respond more quickly to trends in the market.” Steve Dickson, Head of Category: Range cooking, Glen Dimplex Home Appliances

HD Laurel wall and floor tiles

A LONG-STANDING Building on its heritage, British Ceramic Tile is propelling itself into the 21st Century with a multimillionpound investment and continual collaborations with iconic designers.

HISTORY A

British manufacturer for over 100 years, British Ceramic Tile has a long established history of producing unique wall and floor tiles. Formerly Candy Tiles, the company has been through several transformations since it began in the 1900s, and following a business merger in 2011, the company welcomed a new management team and with it, a new approach to manufacturing tiles. extensive white clay reserves, and it is these multiple quarries that provide British Ceramic Tile with the highest quality raw materials for its products. With the vast majority of products made in Britain rather than overseas, not only can the company assure customers of a high quality product, it makes considerable reductions in its carbon footprint and has received the highest environmental and energy saving accreditation. In a market where brands are not recognised, British Ceramic Tile is leading the way with its in-house brand development and iconic designer ranges. Over the past few years the business has focused considerably on brand development, building on its British heritage to add credibility while educating customers on how to use the tiles creatively in the home. It has enjoyed particular success with its designer brands, which have been a key driver for growth across all markets. “UK consumers have a love affair with designer brands,” explains Caryn. “Our collaborations with some of Britain’s best known designer names including Conran & Partners, Laura Ashley and most recently global lifestyle brand Ted Baker have set us apart from the competition. BA REFLECTS ON KBB BA Components treated KBB visitors to a preview of its latest door collections, available from June 2016.

W

hen is a door more than just a door? The answer has to be when it helps define the style and personality that lies behind the kitchen. With the latest additions to the Kitchen Collection by BA Components, showcased at KBB and due for official launch in June 2016, BA has purposely set out to give consumers more choice by taking the trend for contemporary lines, tactile surfaces, neutral colours and beautiful décors to the next level. Included in the new additions are handleless and J-pull options finished with sumptuously soft Supermatts; square-edged slab doors that make the most of beautiful prints; and deeply structured oak grain embosses that highlight contemporary lines. A flawless mirror door, shown for the first time on BA’s KBB stand, is also among the new additions to the Zurfiz collection and is undoubtedly the first of its kind in the market.

For more information call 028 8676 4600 or visit www.byba.co.uk

Matt Graphite, Oakgrain Light Grey and Oakgrain Cashmere are the latest additions to the Bella range of PVC wrapped doors, while the 1mm edged Zurfiz range now includes four new fabulous anti-fingerprint, HardCoat Supermatts (Cashmere, Dust Grey, Light Grey and White) and five inspired stone and wood effects with deep structure embosses (Driftwood Light Grey, Evora Stone Graphite, Halifax Natural Oak, Gladstone Tobacco Oak and the flawless Mirror). Pronto benefits from eight new additions ranging from Wilton Graphite to Rothwell and Firbeck in White, while the no compromise Valore range now includes ten new décors, among them four unicolours, Concrete and four beautifully figured woodgrains - White Swiss Larch, Mali Wenge, Coco Bolo, Grey Brown Ontario Walnut - as well as the strikingly different Grey Brown Metallo.

HARD COAT UPS THE ANTI

Anti-scratch and antifingerprint, the new Hard Coat range of PET foils from David Clouting contains the ultimate soft touch surface as well as high gloss.

G

loss looks fabulous. Of that there is no doubt. In the kitchen, reflective high gloss surfaces add a special quality and the trend is increasingly moving towards contemporary styling with high gloss doors used more and more. Handle-less, slab designs such as the new doors seen on the BA Components stand and the new designs on the O&S Doors stand at KBB, are the perfect way to show really good gloss to its best effect. But gloss has one major drawback, especially in a kitchen: the slightest touch of a finger leaves an unsightly print on its pristine surface - and for the fastidious, that means only one thing: out with the paper towels and cleaning products. Always astute and eager to stay one step ahead, BA Components found the solution

to fingerprints in David Clouting’s Hard Coat collection, a range of on-trend unicolours that brings both anti-fingerprint and anti-scratch properties to high gloss and the very latest supermatt finishes. On show at KBB were several new doors from BA that had been finished with Hard Coat in supermatt - and despite rigorous “testing” by visitors, not a fingerprint, nor a mark were to be seen on any of them. Described as having “a similar look to acrylic panels in gloss and supermatt”, the Hard Coat PET collection provides significant improvement in scratch and mar resistance when compared with regular lacquers and comes at a price that makes it a realistic, costeffective alternative to other gloss and matt panels and is intended for flat lamination.

More details will be available by autumn on colours and availability. The Interior Films, which are perfect for refurbishment projects, feature walls, etc., were presented in three groups: Magis, which includes four subtle woodgrains (including a painted-look) and three wovenlook designs; Animal, which includes six sumptuous designs ranging from a fabulous, almost matt black painted woodgrain, to metallics and a new interpretation of concrete; and Gift, a softer collection of woodgrains, subtle weaves and painted wood effects.

RECORD BREAKER

Multiwood is celebrating its most successful year yet. But what is the secret behind the company’s success?

T

hanks to the introduction of bespoke painting options, attendance at Birmingham’s KBB exhibition and continual investment in its warehouse facilities, it’s been a record-breaking year for kitchen door and accessories specialist, Multiwood. The introduction of the Lancashire-based company’s bespoke painting service has seen Multiwood’s orders increase significantly over the last 12 months. Launched in 2015, orders for bespoke colour-ways and matching accessories spiked almost immediately and have remained consistently high since the option was introduced.

“Our first year of in-house painting was phenomenal in terms of the reaction and growth to the service,” explains Multiwood’s newly appointed Creative Director, Ben Allan. “Keen to offer a wide range of on-trend designs, we currently offer 10 ranges that can be painted to the customer’s preference. This number will increase to 12 this summer, with the addition of our new smooth painted Farringdon Beaded and Farringdon Shaker ranges.” Multiwood’s presence at Birmingham’s KBB exhibition has also played its part in the recordbreaking year. Exhibiting for the first time this year, their range of bespoke painted products, new door designs and prototypes received outstanding feedback, resulting in an exclusive 12 month UK deal that will see unique Gloss and Matt ranges stocked later this year. Continual investment in its facilities has also aided Multiwood’s growth. This summer will see work commence on the 20,000 sq.ft. warehouse extension. Ben explains, “Over the last few years we have concentrated on

re-investing in new products and the bespoke spray shop. Now it’s time for us to invest in the future by increasing the capacity of our stock holding with a brand new extension. Not only can we see the company growing but we also have a clear image of our future direction too.” The extension, which will house a new state of the art racking system, promises to increase productivity and capacity utilization. It will also enable the company to increase the number of bespoke painted accessories available. After such a successful year, what does the future hold for Multiwood? Dan Evers, Marketing Manager adds, “In addition to increasing the Multiwood portfolio, the coming months will focus on developing the First Impressions brand and consumer awareness. With the introduction of a consumer website and consumer advertising campaign, we are confident Multiwood retailers will be encouraged to include branded displays within their showrooms. Look out for the FI brand in consumer magazines from September.”

Also it was seen as only the master bedroom that need fitted furniture many years ago, now it is quite popular for the remains bedrooms of the house to have a small number of fitted units, if space allows.” Doug Haswell, Furniture Manager, Caple

Orlando’s bed system in Royal Oak veneer and white lacquer

olte Delbrück has launched its new bespoke bedroom furniture range, Orlando. Offering a collection of German-made hinged wardrobes, handle designs and dimensions that can be freely combined, the new concept has been created to offer the perfect combination of minimal and classical elements. This design contrast can be seen between the ranges popular Royal Oak veneer and white lacquer, which when paired creates a powerful depth and tone through cutting edge textures. In order to create a one-of-a-kind bedroom design, veneer surfaces – which can be used both vertically and horizontally - have individual appearances thanks to its natural growth. Differences in colour and structure give the design an unmistakable sign of authenticity

which, when combined with Orlando’s bespoke manufacturing process, leads to a naturally inviting room. Orlando’s hinged door wardrobes can be created around you. Offering functional design options for your ideal storage space, the hinged design features Quadro ball bearing runners for smooth performance and self and soft closing systems. MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL Reflecting the latest bathroom trends…

“Traditionally, lighting for the bathroom would have been considered mainly as an add-on purchase, with independent retailers often missing out to the DIY sheds. However, there has been a change of emphasis in recent times, with retailers and consumers alike understanding the importance of incorporating lighting into their plans at an early stage of a new bathroom project. This has resulted in sales growth for the independent retailer, although there is still much untapped potential in this market.” Richard Nicholls UK Sales Director, Sanipex Group

A GUIDING LIGHT Sycamore Lighting’s dedication to quality has resulted in major investment in new technologies, personnel and state of the art testing and training facilities at its extended HQ in Leeds.

F

or over 17 years, Sycamore Lighting has been a driving force behind the UK’s KBB lighting industry. Today, the supplier boasts a new, state-of-theart showroom, a sophisticated in-house testing facility and impressive warehouse spanning over10,000sqft. It is this continual investment, partnered with its most comprehensive range of lighting and lighting control systems to date, that has enabled the company to cross over into different market sectors, whilst retaining its solid reputation in the industry. Sycamore’s most recent investment has been the refurbishment of its showroom, based at the suppliers headquarters in Leeds. Incorporating kitchen, bedroom and bathroom displays, each area has been connected to a RAKO lighting control system and audio unit to showcase a wide range of innovative new product. Alongside over

100 of the company’s latest products, the new layout also features a 4-zone remote control and WiFI system. It gives visitors an opportunity to control up to four different areas of lighting from a remote control or smartphone/tablet and experience the product first hand. Sycamore’s recent success has also enabled the supplier to invest heavily in its testing facilities. Sycamore’s operational laboratory, which has cost over £250,000, has been developed to test each product batch meticulously, allowing only the very best products to be stocked by the West Yorkshire-based company. As well as using a Gonio-Spectroradiometer to measure the luminous flux and intensity, beam angle, colour temperature and rendering of each product, on-going testing is also conducted in Sycamore’s Age Testing Facility. Gary Wilson, Sycamore Lighting’s Sales Director

Sycamore’s brand new showroom

explains, “Once a product has been passed by the Gonio-Spectroradiometer’s in-house Electronic Engineer, they are tested further to ensure all products meet current European standards and have attained European Certification. This time, lights are kept on, and switched on and off, for up to 20 hours a day over the course of several months, replicating the life of a light. The team looks for variations in colour temperature, as well as product longevity. This is why, thanks to our testing lab, we can stipulate the life of our lights in hours and not years. Unlike many of our competitors, we can offer a much more precise measurement, giving our customers the exact figures they need when using or selling our products.” Sycamore’s rigorous testing doesn’t stop there, with two further machines used to measure accurate output data and electromagnetic interference. and compliance check is also given to each batch before being shipped to customers, with each shipment being logged and traced throughout the manufacturing and testing process. “We’re ruthless when it comes to quality but that is why we’re who we are today,” admits Gary. “We openly invite new and existing customers to see our lab. The lighting market does offer cheap alternatives but it’s our job to educate people and show them what lengths we go to in order to offer the very best lighting options out there.” Adding another string to its bow, Sycamore Lighting has introduced a new lighting design service, which is run by a dedicated technical team. Using a CAD operated system, technicians can create wiring diagrams and design mock-ups, whilst compiling a list of materials needed to complete the project. Gary adds, “Not

only has this allowed us to offer a design service to KBB retailers, it has opened the door to new markets and has led us to work on large commercial projects. Most recently, we’ve worked on an 800-unit apartment block, a department store and several retail showrooms. It’s opened up endless opportunities and allowed us to work heavily with designers and architects in the commercial sector.” With new markets being entered and continual product development taking place, the lighting supplier’s sights are firmly focused on the future. Gary adds, “Looking ahead, it is our mission to educate the industry on the benefits of using highly tested lighting products. We want customers to visit our facilities and see the difference for themselves. We have every confidence in our products and because of this, our future looks bright.”

4. Roman’s Liber8 Hinged Door cleverly maximise the alcove space in your bathroom with the frameless hinged door with two in-line panels. Features include 8mm glass thickness, a new minimal easy fix wall profile system and integrated ‘tray to floor’ Water Safe System for sleek integration. 01325 311 318 • www.roman-showers.com

“Although consumers like the thought of a full-on wet room, we often find that on a practical level they prefer the separate drying area that an enclosure creates. For the best of both worlds they are increasingly opting for a frameless enclosure coupled with a low level tray, which poses less of an obstacle in opening up the space, while making the shower area virtually walk-in.” Georgina Spencer, Head of Marketing, Roca Group (UK)

5. Bette has launched the BetteAntislip Pro, a new anti-slip option for its enamelled steel shower floors. It meets a high safety standard of R10 and is created using an enamel layer which has a rough surface that is virtually undetectable – increasing shower safety. It can be applied to Bette’s glossy white shower areas and also matt shades in the BetteFloor Colour World. Pictured on BetteFloor flush-to-floor shower area. 0844 800 0547 • www.bette.co.uk 6. The new Eden cubicle from Saniflo features polished chrome profiles and external glass panels plus internal panels in opaque white glass. Completely leak-free with no requirement for silicone or grout, glass panels are coated with Cristal Plus, a permanent, antilimescale coating. Available in both quadrant and corner versions, with either pivot or sliding doors and left and right handed versions. 020 8842 0033 • www.saniflo.co.uk 7. The JTSOFTSTONE® aqua cushion floor from JT features an ergonomic, non-slip surface which is anti-bacterial. With a slate effect finish and available in three colours - Black, White and Cream - it comes in 12 set sizes along with a bespoke option allowing you to create a ‘wet room effect’ solution. A bespoke solution is also available. 0113 201 5090 • www.just-trays.com “There have been two main drivers in the last five years that have accounted for the evolving shower tray market, the first being the change from 80mm shower trays down to low profile trays. With this, we have seen the market completely reverse, where 90% of the market is now low profile trays whereas five years ago, low profile trays would have accounted for no more than 15 to 20% of the market. Likewise, the addition of anti-slip as an option on the mass market shower tray has been a significant game changer in terms of creating added value for the retailer and added safety for the consumer.”

7

John Schofield, Sales & Marketing Director, JT “The mainline trend continues to be for larger shower trays occupying the footprint that was traditionally devoted to the bath. More and more consumers want the luxury, convenience and speed of a full-on shower experience that can set them up for the day ahead and in the absence of a soak in the bath provide a rewarding hot shower at the end of a long COAT day. So the trend is for larger dimensions with 1000 and 1200mm trays being the favoured sizes.”
