ith over 16 years experience in the UK surfacing market, Cosentino stands out from the crowd as the market leader in the production and distribution of innovative surfaces for architecture and design. It’s an exciting time for the company, with another strong set of financial results announced by the Group for 2017, setting more records with £901 million in revenue and £57 million in net profit. Add to this household name stars as brand ambassadors – top tennis player Rafa Nadal and renowned supermodel Cindy Crawford front the Dekton and Silestone brands respectively – and a string of new Centres
opening in the UK this year, business is very good indeed. “It’s certainly been a fantastic start to 2018 so far,” comments Paul Gidley, Cosentino UK’s new Area Director. Having been with the Spanish multinational for the past seven years, most recently as Area Manager for the North, Paul took over the role from Christophe Gontier, who after 11 years at the helm left in January to take up the role of Cosentino VP Asia & Oceania. For Paul, the company’s recent success at KBB Birmingham sums up the spirit of the moment. “KBB Birmingham was a great show for us. Despite initial concerns that

Silestone Classic Calacatta N-Boost, part of the Eternal Collection the weather might overshadow the day, the feedback we received showed that it was well worth the investment. There was a notable difference in stands being bigger and better than ever before, and we were delighted with the positive feedback on both our stand and the new colours. For us, it’s really set the tone for what is set to be an exciting year of growth and innovation.” Leading the way in innovation is a trademark of the Spanish family owned multinational, which was founded in 1979, as shown by its commitment to new product development; bringing to market exclusive technologies and on-trend colours, designs
and finishes. Recent launches include the exclusive N-Boost technology for its Silestone quartz surfaces, a revolution in nanotechnology that results in slabs with an impressive depth of colour and lustrous shine, combined with easier cleaning. This year is set to see a continual increase in Cosentino’s product portfolio, with new launches for its Dekton ultra-compact, Silestone quartz and Sensa natural protected stone brands launched at KBB, and more concrete designs coming very soon. “Whilst marble inspired designs and neutrals will always be a popular choice, this year will really see industrial interiors
Orix, part of the Dekton® Industrial Collection implode onto the mainstream market, with more customers daring to go bold with their choice of surfaces and opting for standout concrete or aged metal inspired tops. People are often surprised to hear that Dekton Trilium, our award-winning oxidised iron design, is our best-selling Dekton colour, just ahead of previous top-seller, marble inspired Dekton Aura and this is reflective of what consumers are looking for right now.” However, for Cosentino, a diverse product range is just one of its many strengths. “It’s never far from our minds that without our fantastic team and the loyalty and success of our clients and customers, we

K&B Journal talks to David Cole, Sales Director at Perrin and Rowe about the future of the kitchen tap… So many exciting developments are currently happening within the kitchen tap industry, in particular hot taps are becoming a must-have piece. However, with a rise in 4G living and fast-paced lifestyles, some customers don’t just want to settle for instant hot any more – they want everything that is required for cooking, entertaining and cleaning in one place. “Our recently launched 3-in-1s with Rinses are a popular choice that have all the functionalities of a standard mixer, plus the ability to dispense instant hot water as well as the added benefit of a side rinse; this efficient design saves on worktop space without compromising on performance. “We understand that hot taps are not just for the modern kitchen, which is why we’ve developed a range that includes traditional, country and contemporary designs. Plus, the range of special finishes in brassware allows consumers to adapt their tap to the style of their kitchen. Our Aged Brass and English Bronze finishes are typically used in traditional or shaker designs while Polished Brass and Gold finishes are more often selected to be used in modern spaces.

3. The Grohe Blue® Home from Häfele offers still, medium and sparkling filtered water from one tap. It also comes with a more streamlined tank than its predecessor - perfect for fitting into consumers’ kitchen cupboards easily offering an eco-friendly alternative to bottled water. www.hafele.co.uk/grohe
“Consumers are becoming more savvy about sustainability which is leading to increased demand for fittings that are built to last and that encourage sustainable living. Retailers can therefore encourage consumers to upgrade their traditional kitchen taps by emphasising the products’ key sustainability benefits. These include the fact that hot water taps are far more energy efficient than a traditional kettle, and that they provide a more sustainable, plastic-free alternative to bottled water.” Andrew Billingham, Sinks and Taps Product Manager, Häfele UK

“In my experience, retailers have a real appetite to learn but only if the facts are clearly qualified. There’s absolutely no point just giving the retailer a list of features about your product without also giving them all the associated benefits of each feature. Once he or she understands your product’s USPs over the competition, they will have the confidence required to sell it and/or sell up. We fully understand that when it comes to hot taps, retailers need tangible reasons to add or change supplier and that’s exactly what we provide with the HotSpot Titanium boiling water hot tap; it’s the exclusive alternative option for kitchen retailers!” Ron Blount, UK Manager for HotSpot Titanium

ooking to incorporate minimalistic design into your kitchen design? Limited on space or simply looking for a clever kitchen gadget to show your guests? Then why not take a closer look at Rangemaster’s GEO 4-in-1 tap? Available in classic or contemporary tap design with a choice of chrome or brushed finishes, it has been deigned to offer (double space?) safe dispensing of 98 degree water thanks to its childsafe key fob system. It also comes with smart antiscale technology for hassle free maintenance and it delivers over 100 cups of filtered 98 degree water an hour. That’s a lot of tea! The unpressurised system also reduces the risk of spitting, splashing and steaming and its straightforward installation means there is no need to adjust incoming water pressure, even when faced with low pressure systems.
The Rangemaster GEO offers a more family friendly alternative to traditional pressurised systems. You’ll find a consistent flow of 98° hot water from the unpressurised system. This ensures spitting, gushing and excessive steam are limited, reducing the risk of scalding to the user.

Russell Owens
All-in-Once Celsius Arc
Q&A WITH ZIP Kitchen & Bathroom Journal talks to Russell Owens, Marketing Director at Zip Water UK about Britain’s dynamic tap market… How is the market for taps evolving in the UK? The hot water tap market has risen massively in popularity – we can see this through the expanding number of manufacturers launching this type of product, rising sales as well as independent survey results. For example, over a fifth of homeowners on Houzz said a boiling water tap was their dream kitchen appliance (22%)*. No longer a luxury item, the hot water tap is now regularly becoming an on-trend appliance to have installed when updating the residential kitchen. This has allowed companies such as Zip Water UK to expand their ranges and adapt for the growing needs of consumers. What factors are influencing kitchen tap design in 2018? Consumers are continually looking for products that have the versatility to provide a solution to the user’s multiple wants and needs, while also maintaining a stylish design. This versatility is applicable to the multi-functional tap – ‘taps that can do it all’ appeal to the consumer by serving numerous purposes but only exist as one appliance. “In terms of design and finish, we are seeing a greater scope of colours and styles available ensuring the tap complements any interior style. We’re finding that warm metallics in particular are proving popular such as brushed gold and rose gold – these complement the current favoured kitchen colours of grey and navy particularly well.”
How is technology playing its part? Energy saving technologies have been truly influential to both manufacturers and the consumer market, not only for the positive effect this can have on energy bills but also for the sustainability aspect – a hot topic that is important to both commercial and residential buyers. The eco mode on Zip’s HydroTaps (which provide boiling, chilled and sparkling filtered water in an instant) save power when the HydroTap is not is use, saving money for the user but also boosting the efficiency of the product overall. While the use of air-cooling technology, rather than watercooling, means that not one precious drop of water is wasted.” How are manufactures helping to educate the market on the benefits of multifunctional taps? There is definitely more of a focus towards consumer-driven marketing, and this has helped to increase the knowledge of the products, particularly in terms of convenience. Thanks to greater showroom promotion and interior designer support, people are more aware of the benefits of having such a product. We are, however, starting to see environmental responsibility as a driver for purchasing such a product, as it helps cut environmentally damaging bottled water waste – this is a message we’ve been keen to highlight as the impact of plastic waste becomes more acute. Many people opt for buying bottled water because they dislike the taste of tap water but we offer a system that removes
the chlorine and impurities in tap water to give it a clean, fresh taste. Eradicating the need to buy expensive bottled water and with the average plastic bottle taking an average of 450 years to break down, using a reusable alternative is surely the answer. This message is extremely important, and one all manufacturers must adopt.” How can retailers encourage consumers to upgrade their traditional kitchen tap? We believe that it’s only by experiencing the product can a consumer really appreciate how fantastic multi-functional taps are. They may have heard about them, may even have seen them at friends’ houses, but it’s only when they pour themselves a glass of beautifully clean, pure-tasting chilled water, or make a cup of tea in seconds, that they understand the value these products add. The retailer needs to make it clear how multifunctional taps can complement the lifestyle of every user. Whether it’s for the keen chef looking to speed up the cooking process, for someone wanting to reduce their reliance on bottled water or for the busy family home where users are looking for the safest product available, multifunctional taps make life easier for all. Discussing the customer’s needs and really understanding their lifestyle is crucial as there will be an option that appeals to everyone and fits every type of budget.”

Neolith Arctic White Silk provides a neutral backdrop that makes vividly coloured food stand-out
Kutchiin and Campus Loft, home to one of Germany’s most visionary chefs
Neolith worktops offer versatility and durability in the kitchen
A BLANK CANVAS Neolith® Arctic White becomes an artist’s medium…
H
olger Stromberg, one of Germany’s most original and visionary chefs and leading nutritionists, has chosen Neolith® Arctic White Silk for the kitchen worktops at his new restaurant, Kutchiin and Campus Loft Stromberg was born into a world of hospitality. From the small pub founded by his great-grandparents, which his father turned into a restaurant, one might say gastronomy is in Holger’s blood. At the heart of his approach is a passion for the very best natural ingredients. Neolith Arctic White Silk was chosen for the kitchen’s surfaces by Stromberg, and interior design firm SODA, for its ability to withstand high-impact activities and constant temperature fluctuation. Particularly, he was impressed by how a hot pan can be placed on the Sintered Stone without any effect on the finish.
Chef Stromberg’s approach is idiosyncratic, but rather than ascribing a signature style to himself, he shuns labelling or being pigeonholed. For him, there is so much variety, interest and beauty in the culinary world, it would be limiting to pin his cookery to one specific cuisine. Traditional, honest and ‘truly energetic’ cooking, which invigorates the diner, is encapsulated within each dish he prepares. This philosophy underpins Kutchiin and Campus Loft. Discussing the restaurant concept Chef Stromberg said: “Our main goal and primary vision was creating a room with real character for every kind of event, being able to fulfil every idea, wish and requirement of guests and customers and not saying “no” to any kind of creative idea, however ambitious.” When it came to refurbishing the restaurant’s kitchen, Holger and his team wanted to avoid using stainless steel surfacing, ubiquitous in the hospitality sector. The team specifically looked for worktops which met the demanding requirements of a professional kitchen; this was how they came across Neolith.
A blank canvas on which to imagine new dish concepts, Neolith Arctic White Silk provided a desirably neutral backdrop which makes vividly coloured food stand-out. He demonstrated this asset, by creating a special dish in honour of the collaboration, a visually engaging pink crab pasta ravioli with a herbal jus. He further showcased the aesthetic qualities of the surface with a beautiful chopped salad of scallops, pesto and paprika. Commenting on Neolith’s advantages, Stromberg added: “Neolith is a state-of-the-art substance with many useful properties, especially within a kitchen. It is highly adaptable and unobtrusive with a huge variety of applications; the colour of the Arctic White is so pure, simple and attractive. Above all, the surface feels great to work on and complements my ethos and approach to the dining experience, a passion for high quality matched with honesty and sustainability.” For Stromberg, every day is about making the customer experience a singular moment of joy. As such, every aspect of the locations, including the kitchen, needs to embody this ethos. It’s the key to his happiness and that of his diners.

Patriotism is at an all-time high, with many consumers jumping on the band wagon to support British manufacturing and the brands that serve this sector. Not only that, but there seems to be a distinct loss of confidence across UK homeowners seeking product from the European interiors market. At a time of such uncertainty, consumers are finding comfort in actually gravitating towards British brands like Daval, and I strongly believe this is a direct result of imports pushing up prices, along with brand heritage and product lineage becoming a new concern to UK homeowners and developers.” “Speaking as a true British manufacturer, I have the pleasure to advise the recent events of Brexit have actually provided us with unexpected gain, generating a lot of new and repeat business at such an early stage of this political turn. I believe this is a direct result of the markets weakness in the British pound against the euro. Consequently, Brexit ultimately highlighted our business and brand for the better. Following the referendum on 23rd June 2016, that winter saw us forecast a 22% increase in business when compared to the previous year: with 14% of that share attributed specifically to our kitchen furniture. “In the same vein, Brexit really hasn’t impacted us in terms of business sales and revenues and the same applies to our retail network too. 2017 has exceeded preceding levels of growth with a 14% increase on 2016 with 24% of that directly apportioned to our kitchen sales and 2018 is set to be even better: predicted at 15%.

LochAnna Kitchen’s new Washington Collection
BEING BRITISH LochAnna Kitchens takes a distinctly British approach to manufacturing…
P
roud of its British heritage, Faith Furniture Company’s kitchen brand, LochAnna Kitchens, combines over 100 years of industry experience with modern-day technology to create its show stopping kitchen ranges. But, when faced with a plethora of European kitchen brands entering the UK market and Brexit rearing its ugly head, how important is the company’s ‘Made In Britain’ ethos?
“Very,” begins Paul Jenkinson, Managing Director of LochAnna. “Consumers increasingly want to know which kitchen in a showroom is directly supporting the UK economy and which are from European brands. I believe the Brexit decision is impacting on retailers in all regions of the UK, as consumers consider how they will invest.” So why should we buy British and what benefits does this give both the retailer and end

The Washington Collection is available in 27 colours user? “Pricing stability, availability and quality,” says Paul. “British manufacturers offer more relevant classic and traditional styles than most European brands. In the same way, most British brands are adopting European handle-less and contemporary designs. British companies know their markets as their manufacturing base is closer to their customers. “One of our biggest strengths is that we are a UK manufacturer who is obsessive about helping retailers to be profitable, along with being a dependable kitchen specialist with good value products, great service and a relevant and attractive range. We are unique in that we ensure our whole team is visible to the customer and we deliver on promises. And if we or the customer makes a mistake we move heaven and earth to put the situation right, quickly.”
Made in Britain, the Washington Collection can also include a boot room LochAnna Kitchens are proudly ‘built in Britain’ and this label can be found on its marketing literature, along with information on the company’s heritage, employees and production facilities, to continually reassure customers why they should buy British. All its British made kitchen cabinets are manufactured using high density 18mm MFC. In a choice of five colours, the units are built using all metal cams, pins and pegs and they add wooden dowels, strengthening the overall build process and adding to the quality of the finished product. Most recently, LochAnna Kitchens has launched its Washington Collection. The range underlines LochAnna’s ability to cater for all kitchen tastes and requirements. Featuring painted shaker doors, you can choose from 27 colours, including shades of
grey through to purple tones with Lavender and Damson, bold blues such as Aegean and Sapphire, and earthy greens including Meadow and Thicket. The kitchen can be accessorised with mantle shelves, wine and plate racks to create a traditional-style room, or for a more modern, contemporary styling you can include square end posts. And if space allows, you can even include a boot room. Paul adds, “The Washington collection brings something truly special to the market in a range of colours that cannot fail to capture the imagination. We are confident that this collection will enable us to expand our portfolio and offer our partners, who have a wider range of customers and clients with varying budgets, the opportunity to grow their business with a premium, British-made solution.

Trojan will be introducing new designs to its bath ranges in the coming months that will rationalise the range and complement consumer trends.
MADE IN YORKSHIRE Proud of its humble beginnings, acrylic bath manufacturer, Trojan, proves that its Yorkshire values are at the forefront of its global success…
W
ith over 40 years of experience behind it, British bath manufacturer, Trojan, has built its reputation on traditional Yorkshire values. Established in the 1970s by Maurice Mosley, it is now in its second generation with Maurice’s son, David Mosley, firmly at the helm. But, whilst the business has changed significantly since it first began making acrylic baths from the upper floors of an old mill over 40 years ago, the company’s core values remain unchanged. Proud of its northern roots, each bath has been made using as many locally sourced raw materials as commercially possible. Supplied by local people and companies in a bid to guarantee quality throughout its product range. “It’s easy for manufacturers to say they produce high quality products but the proof is in
the pudding and we like to think that we can show you the whole dessert cart,” says David. “We use suppliers that we know we can trust and in many cases, ones that we have been using since the very beginning,” explains David. “Experience tells us that by using local suppliers, we can keep a closer eye on quality and, by holding four weeks of raw materials on-site, we can overcome the risk of a potential materials shortage. The ‘just in time’ ethos doesn’t work for us. We would prefer to invest in stock in order to service the market.” Trojan operates across three sites in Huddersfield, with its main, 11-acre site made up of four individual units, each with its own manufacturing speciality. The whole of the company’s 140-strong workforce is responsible for performing rigorous quality checks. From the workers on the traditional

2018 sees the introduction of Trojan’s new Slimline 30 shower tray to reflect the trend for low profile show trays and wetrooms oven and rig systems (which still remain a firm favourite when moulding baths due to their unparalleled reliability), to the universal former operator that single handedly creates 45 baths an hour, each stage of the manufacturing process, however small, is completely traceable and leaves nothing to chance. Throughout the manufacturing stages, each of the 7,000 baths manufactured onsite every week is checked for imperfections in the acrylic and, if needed, any product that doesn’t meet Trojan’s exacting standards
is isolated from the production line and reworked before being completed. David adds, “Regardless of the price level of the bath, even the slightest dimple needs to be polished out before it leaves our factory. You probably wouldn’t see the flaw when fitting the bath but for us, this is still not acceptable. This attitude is inherent in our workforce and it shows the integrity of our business.” The overall build quality of each bath is also checked at separate stages of the build. David explains, “Our bath frames are hand made using FSC sourced timber from
a local supplier in Slaithwaite instead of cheap offcuts of timber used by our overseas competitors. We also chamfer our bath baseboards to enable a neat finish on the laminate. You might not see either of these things but we believe it adds to the build quality of our products and sets us apart from our competitors. “We also put a straight edge on one in every 10 baths to make sure the mouldings are correct and weigh three baths from each production line not only at the beginning of each shift but after each break to make sure

Ramsden & Mosley, Trojan’s premium solid surface bath range
Bathe Easy from Trojan is a stylish selection of accessible baths that offer maximum design appeal
140 people work in the factory, completing up to 7,000 baths a week weights are correct. All of this is recorded and filed. If the bath is underweight, we’ll let the sprayer know and they can adjust the calibration on their spray equipment. This is really important. If it is shipped underweight, we’d be short changing our customers so it needs to be right. We work to plus one, minus nothing. It might sound far fetched to some, but for us, it’s all part of our company ethos.” Social accountability is also ingrained in the Huddersfield company’s philosophy. David explains, “The by-product of making a bath is the off cut picture frame removed after trimming. All manufacturers would put this contaminated acrylic into landfill. In 2012, we created an in-house recycling system – which has since been patented that allows us to separate fibreglass from
acrylic, significantly reducing our waste. Once cleaned and processed, the acrylic can be sold back to the chemical producers. We strongly believe in investing in our recycling methods and it’s something we pride ourselves on. “I’m confident most manufacturers don’t do what we do to keep our quality levels high but we can’t afford to be inefficient. Experience in this sector has been drained and cheap imports have been driving the market to a place where consumers arguably don’t want to be. Price is important but it’s often at the cost of quality. You might be able to save a euro or a dollar on a bath but what is the long term cost of that? That’s not the way we want to work. We do offer an entrylevel range and we do drive a hard bargain
at times but we won’t scrimp on quality because we’ve worked too hard to gain the reputation we have. “We make for the manufacturer and as a result, we do have a solid reputation in the industry,” concludes David. “We’re classed as an A-Class category manufacturer in the UAE and our products are being specified in projects in the Middle East. In part, this is due to the hard work of our team but it’s the quality of our products that really sets us apart from the competition. If we can compete in the middle east against manufacturing giants and local producers and we can still be competitive, it says a lot. It’s a testament to the business and our production facilities and we’re confident that our Yorkshire values will continue to help us grow.”

The shower market is growing and with multi-generational living, a focus on saving water and energy and the fashion for hotel-inspired bathrooms taking hold, this is one trend that is set to stay… 1. STEP BY STEP
Martin Schäpermeier, Application Engineer and Instructor at Kaldewei Iconic World, demonstrates a fast and simple approach to shower tray sealing with Kaldewei’s new floor-level sealing kit… Step 1
Step 3
Preparation of the base: The surface must be completely free of dust and grease to ensure good adhesion of the corner profiles and the sealing tape. For best results, use a cleaner with alcohol or ethanol.
With the corner profiles affixed, cut the sealing tape to size. Importantly, the sealing tape and corner profiles should always overlap by around five centimetres.
Step 2:
Finish sealing the shower tray on each side with the sealing strips, ensuring that they are properly attached. Next, position the installation frame and waste fitting and secure them in place, insert the shower surface into the frame and install the waste fitting.
Remove the backing of the first corner profile, fit it to the outside of the shower surface - taking into account the tile thickness - and press in place. “I like to use a paint roller without the sleeve to achieve a secure and permanent bond with the enamel surface. You can also use a clean, soft cloth instead. The heat produced by the rubbing action will actually improve the adhesion performance of the sealing strip,” advises Martin. Do the same for all four corners.
Step 4
Step 5 For composite sealing, apply a coat of sealant broadly across the screed and the walls, just below the sealing strips, before pressing on the
corner profiles and sealing strips. The corner profiles and sealing strips are now bonded using sealant or sealing slurry. “Pay particular attention to the joints,” adds Martin
Step 6 When all sealing strips and corners are firmly bonded together, the Kaldewei sealing system is integrated into the bathroom’s composite sealing. This is done by simply applying the sealing right up to the edge of the enamelled shower surface, including over the strips. Shower surface, wall and floor are now absolutely impermeable. Once the tiler has finished the tiling, all that’s left to do is apply the maintenance joint around the enamelled shower surface – done.

Keen to offer the complete solution to their customers, the pair bought a struggling Artex and decorative coving business and with a view to source bathroom products, started their very own bathroom distribution business. From humble beginnings, which saw the siblings buy their first stock from a failing bathroom company in the midst of liquidation, to supplying over 11,000 product lines from 40 manufacturers through its 115,000 square
feet facilities in Kent, Claygate Distribution has grown rapidly – and successfully. Andrew Streek, Joint Managing Director of Claygate Distribution, attributes the company’s success to its longstanding partnerships with suppliers and the strong relationships it holds with its customers. “I always say that we’re only as good as our suppliers,” he says. “They are a fundamental part our business and without their continual commitment to us, we can’t offer a good service to our customers. This means we want suppliers that want to work with us and are open to adapting their business model if we can see missed opportunities. It’s not important

“Quality is something that is often spoken about but is rarely backed up. Lecico Bathrooms openly invites the Claygate team to its manufacturing facilities in Egypt and the UK so they can experience our company’s mentality for themselves. They are eager to learn about our products and this is reflected in the success we have with them. We’ve also worked with Claygate to create its own entrylevel sanitaryware brand that is CE compliant. You wouldn’t do this unless you had complete trust in the brand and its facilities.” James Lovett, National Account Manager for Lecico Bathrooms New Classic range by Lecico
“We’ve been working with Claygate since the very beginning. They have added value to our business and when faced with market change and company restructuring, we still remain a close-knit business. Together, we structure our approach to market and work on joint campaigns to grow the business. It’s this close working relationship that helps to drive the company forward. We’re very proud to be part of the Claygate family.” Gary Foord, Regional Sales Manager at Polypipe Polypipe is one of Claygate’s longest suppliers how long you’ve worked with a supplier for – even though we’ve been working with some for over 30 years – it’s about what has been achieved in that time. Yes, product is one thing and we want our manufacturers to supply us with the very best bathroom products available but it boils down to our relationship with them, the service we can offer our customers and the support packages available. For us, it’s about continuity, reliability and trust. Building relationships is important to us. This approach has enabled us to form mature relationships with our manufactures and gain mutual respect for one and other.”
It’s an approach that has seen the southern distributor attract a wealth of manufacturers to its door, including leading manufacturers, Kudos, Lecico and Polypipe. “We can’t work with everyone, it’s as simple as that. But, we endeavour to give our customers what they want, which means we’re often casting our net in search of new suppliers. We have certain criteria we look for in our partners and if there is any doubt on either side, we shake hands and go our separate ways.” It’s this no-nonsense approach that has led Claygate to play on its strengths. “We do three things that we believe set us apart from
the rest,” says Andrew. “Firstly, we maintain good stock levels. We hold over £6.2 million worth of stock in our warehouse, which is readily available to our 2,800 national account holders. Secondly, we pride ourselves on our delivery service. We have 35 vehicles on the road every day, allowing us to offer next day delivery to many of our customers who make an order between 7.30am to 5pm. There’s also no minimum order value. And thirdly, good customer service is paramount throughout our customers’ experience. Without that, we don’t have a service model to appreciate.”
profile 40 • kitchen & bathroom journal june 2018
“Innovation and quality are at the heart of what we do and this is a great fit with Claygate’s philosophy. The team supports us by stocking large numbers of our products and when new designs are coming out, working with a distributor like Claygate allows us to hit the market quickly and effectively. We train the sales team on our products and work together on new sales initiatives. We have great confidence in Claygate and the services they offer and as such, we encourage new and existing Kudos customers to use this distribution channel.” Nick Graville, Sales & Marketing Director at Kudos Shower Products Kudos Pinnacle Corner Hinged Door
When faced with cut-throat export prices and online competition, Claygate remains firm on its pricing strategy. “We won’t join the race to the bottom,” says Andrew. “The saying, ‘turnover is vanity, profit is sanity, cash is reality’ is very relatable in this field. It doesn’t always come down to price and price alone. Our customers are common sense driven and appreciate the added benefits of working with Claygate. Yes, you may get a shower tray for less money online but can that supplier offer you next day delivery? If it is damaged or faulty, will you get a quick response and replacement? And do they offer an aftersales service or ongoing technical support? 99% of the time, the answer is, no. We wouldn’t be here if we price matched the whole market but we also wouldn’t be here if our customers didn’t believe in us and the service we provide.” It’s clear that Claygate is growing and with that, its relationships are more important
that ever. With a clear focus on independent retailers and merchants, the company is continuing to invest in purpose-built facilities, increased stock holdings and greater product lines. But what does this mean for Claygate in the foreseeable future? Andrew concludes, “We endeavour to be as good as we can be. We are family owned and our unique approach to business is what makes us work. The only way you can continue to evolve is for people to believe in what we do. We have a great team working with us – many of whom have been with the company over 25 years – and we wouldn’t be where we are today without them. We take the same stance with our suppliers and our customers. We are a partnership and we pride ourselves on this. Our company’s ethos has helped us build our business from the ground up and we’re confident it will continue to do so for many more years to come.”
Claygate has invested £80,000 in a new racking system that features over 800 picking holes

LIGHTEN UP
Reflecting the trends with the latest mirrors and lighting solutions for the bathroom… 1

As a society, we are becoming more and more conscious of the small factors which make a big difference to our day to day lives. The connection between lighting and wellbeing has long been recognised by experts and it is now becoming a consideration for homeowners too. “The lighting of a room can have a significant effect on our mood, emotions and sleep patterns. Both the intensity and the colour of a lighting scheme can have a measurable impact on our psychological state, and in the bathroom, where relaxation is a priority, this is particularly relevant. “Alongside this is a greater appreciation of the role of lighting in creating a stylish décor. Once an after-thought, homeowners are now developing an understanding of how the right or wrong, lighting can make or break a space. “Mirrors and mirrored cabinets which feature LED lighting trims or colour-adjusting light capabilities, for example, can make all the difference. These are able to either harmonise with overhead lights or softly contrast them, depending on the customer’s preference. Furthermore, colour-adjusting LED lighting can meet wellbeing needs too, as experts advise bright lights for alertness and subdued tones for tranquillity, both of which can be achieved at the touch of a button. 1. The new Sigma strip lighting from Sensio has a unique 8mm printed circuit board that is cut in a zigzag shape, allowing the fitter to bend the strip along two axis’. M35 Top coplanar sliding system. Inset: Salice’s new ‘Slider’ mechanism
MAGNETIC
ATTRACTION Adding function and elegance to the bedroom, Salice’s new ‘Slider’ sliding door system is the perfect solution for tall wardrobes…
H
ave you noticed how the best ideas are invariably the simplest? With the new linear magnetic damper on its ‘Slider’ sliding door system, Salice has leapfrogged mechanical systems like only Salice could and the result is one of those moments of genius that make you wonder why nobody has come up with the idea before. Slowly, smoothly, silently and without hint of judder when you slide the door, the over-mounted ‘Slider’ system uses a simple magnet to create the ultimate soft close in a new sliding door system with genuine magnetic attraction.
The range starts with the standard S10 and S20 two-door co-planar systems for left or right mounting of wall cabinet doors and progresses through various options to accommodate a full height three-door system that’s as ideal for hiding complete kitchens in up-market compact flats as it is for tall wardrobes. For medium sized wardrobes, the new Slider M35 Top coplanar sliding system – which was showcased at kbb Birmingham - has been introduced. Ideal for smaller bedrooms, a remote control version is also available for sleek and stylish operation.
