From the experience, the passion and the commitment of Salice are born the innovative Silentia hinges, designed to eliminate the noise produced by the closing of furniture doors. Silentia is the hinge with a combined deceleration effect. The decelerating system is no longer an external element, but it is hidden from view and completely combined with the hinge components. It does not alter the furniture's look but does allow the door to shut slowly. With Silentia rediscover the silence in your home. I
t’s a journalists dream to interview someone who is not only open and honest but passionate about the market he works in. And for Peter Holt, Managing Director of Sylmar Technology since 2006, his straight-talking nature and enthusiasm for the KBB market has turned what was once a small solid surface manufacturing company into one of the industry’s biggest success stories. We start the interview with a brutally honest statement from Peter: “PR fluff doesn’t interest me,” he begins. “When I have something to shout about, you’ll know about it. And I feel like that time is now.” As I’m shown around a highly organised factory that stretches to more than 37,000 sqft, I find myself wondering where it all began. “It seems like a lifetime ago I was working for the Spring Ram Corporation, fitting kitchen sink showroom displays for my customers on a Saturday,” explains Peter, whose career in the KBB sector spans more than 30 years. “But if that was what it took for me to get the job done, I would do it. I was ambitious and I wasn’t afraid to work hard to get results.” His determination didn’t go unnoticed as he gradually rose through the ranks at Spring Ram to become Account Director of B&Q. His main role was analysing the shopping habits of B&Q customers - and contributing towards the design of a new range of taps. Whilst Peter admits these were fun times, his ambitious nature landed him a role at Caradon Plumbing Solutions, the name behind Twyford, Doulton, Mira Showers, Ideal Boilers and Stelrad radiators. “I was asked to develop their retail business,” he says. “To this day I still have fond memories of creating the bog in a box with our distribution partners.” Many readers will no doubt remember this as the original all in one sanitaryware concept that allowed customers to take away everything they needed to fit a WC all in one simple box. But it was Peter’s position within laminate worktop manufacturing company Orama Fabrications Ltd that paved the way for his future. As shareholder and Sales and Marketing Manager, Peter saw the company’s revenue grow from £16 million in 2001 to £35 million three years later. Growth led Orama Fabrications to acquire Sylmar Technology, a then small solid surface manufacturing company but it wasn’t long before Orama Fabrications found itself in the acquisition spotlight: “We were approached by Wilsonart and a buy out was agreed with the proviso that Sylmar Technology would not be part of the negotiations,” says Peter. The deal was done and in 2006, Peter decided to acquire Sylmar Technology himself. “When I took on the business, it employed five people.” He admits, candidly. “Today, I’m pleased to say I have 60 employees. I’ve also tripled the turnover to £10 million.” Today, the solid surface company manufactures and hand finishes solid surfaces for the kitchen and bathroom market from its premises in Alfreton, Derbyshire. Offering a seven to ten-day lead time on made-to-order standard sizes and 14 days for bespoke items, Sylmar is one of a handful of surface companies still manufacturing and hand-finishing everything in the UK - and, with no trade ties or single supplier used, Peter and his team have complete flexibility when looking for the best materials available. So why did Peter take on Sylmar? “Simple. I could see that the company was going places. There was a decline in laminate and big changes were afoot. In 1986, laminate made up 86% of the surface market but in 2012 it was only making up 56% of the market. Why? Well, I always relate this change to the car sector. Nobody makes a bad car anymore. Yes, they vary in price and spec but they’re all built to last. Buying a car now only comes down to personal preference and the performance you require. The same can be said for today’s kitchen, with solid surfaces seen by consumers as a trade up from laminate,” explains Peter. I can see his logic. The components

Sylmar’s hand-finishing department
All Sylmar products are manufactured and hand made in the UK that go into a modern kitchen are broadly similar but it’s the finishing touches – like the worktop – that make a generic kitchen truly yours. Peter adds, “Customers were starting to come around to this way of thinking when the recession hit.” Sylmar’s first solid surface range, maia®, was being used in MFI kitchen displays across the country when the multiple-retailer announced it was going into liquidation in 2008. “Over 25% of our business was with MFI but there were always going to be victims of the recession. I often get asked if I have any regrets about working with them but I don’t. “To promote a new brand in the worksurface market you either need very deep pockets or a way of getting as many consumers as possible to see your product,” says Peter. “Thanks to MFI, we were able to get our relatively new and unknown product in front of thousands of consumers and create brand awareness. What could be better than that? “MFI certainly hasn’t tarnished my views on multiple retailers and we still work with them now - but I have never allowed a customer to be 25% of our business again. That lesson has definitely been learnt.” MFI’s closure was a sign for the Derbyshire-based company to diversify. While the retail sector felt the pain of recession, the less-able market remained buoyant. “The recession didn’t impact on the aging
minerva® Carrara White population’s need for care and new and existing care homes needed durable worktops that could offer unparalleled hygienic properties. A rise in tuition fees also meant a need for universities to upgrade their student houses, which often included retro-fitting kitchen worktops to create a fresh new look. We had to work hard to gain new business but we got there in the end.” So where does that leave the independent retailer? “It’s not always easy sailing for an independent, especially when you have the internet to contend with. That’s why we do not sell our minerva® range online. We don’t want retailers to be disadvantaged by online price wars. Because of this decision, multiple and independent retailers can be assured that there is price consistency and good margins to be had,” says Peter. The company’s ability to evolve and face challenges head on has resulted in its maia® range of 3mm acrylic solid surfaces

growing. Four new designs will be launched in the coming weeks. Working alongside its distribution partners to launch the new finishes - Snow Haze, Beige Sparkle, Greystone and Brazilian Greige, the new décors all fall into the on-trend grey and white themes. With guidance from the Morris Lea Design Partnership, each new décor has been created in-house to complement current door designs and colour trends. They can also be used as part of an integrated sink design, complementary splashbacks, upstands, plinths, hot rods or chopping boards. Peter adds, “Our team saw a need to add more cream tones to the range so they can work with the current trend for grey and oak in the kitchen. We’ve also focused our attention on the natural look. Each sheet is completely unique, making us even closer to replicating natural materials” Meanwhile, Sylmar’s minerva® premium range of 25mm solid worksurfaces - which offers easy joining without a worktop bolt - is set to make its debut in the US this January. So what does the future hold for Sylmar? “Good question,” answers Peter. “The economy will be a major influence on our growth but I’m confident that we will increase our presence in the kitchen and bathroom sector. I also believe that the solid surface market in the UK is relatively immature compared to other global markets. That’s where the opportunity lies for Sylmar Technology…”

COORDINATION IS KEY EGGER UK has extended its worktop range to complement the latest kitchen décors.
E
GGER UK has revamped its worktop range to incorporate brand new décors and textures to create worktops with matching MFC, laminate and edging, enabling the customer to create coordinated doors, end panels, carcasses, shelving and even plinths with their worktop. “This is the most significant revamp we have ever made to our worktop range and we believe it will have a huge impact on the sector,” says EGGER UK’s head of décor development, Elliott Fairlie. With an increasing demand for open plan, multifunctional living, creating a coordinated look requires materials that either match or complement the worktop and because EGGER supplies the materials that are made into doors, carcasses, shelving, end panels and plinths, the resources exist to bring the coordinated look together.
“Increasingly, the choice of worktop is the starting point of a kitchen scheme,” explains Elliott. “The worktop takes centre stage, so it’s crucial to combine other furniture such as doors, end panels, shelving and flooring to create a successful look.” Rather than just tinkering with the colour palette, EGGER has developed a concept that helps designers and consumers create truly coordinated interiors. Out goes its existing worktop range of 20 décors and in comes a standard 38 mm postformed Contemporary collection of 26 décors and a Premium range of 25mm and 38mm square-edge worktops in 12 décors. “The decision to retain a tight postformed edge in the Contemporary range rather than move completely over to the even more fashionable square-edge profile reflects

customer feedback. There remains a strong demand for this type of worktop in the British market,” says Elliott. “But by using a high density protective layer along the front edge of the core board creates a front edge that is less susceptible to damage from impact, a vulnerable spot on some postformed worktops, whilst the tight 3mm radius on the postformed edge gives a contemporary look.” In the Contemporary range there is an increased emphasis on woodgrains. This is in reaction to the amount of solid colour being used as frontals, with woodgrains now becoming the accent. For customers looking for something even more on trend, the new square-edge Premium
range also offers six stone and ceramic décors – as well as synchronised pore woodgrains The process, which creates worktop designs where the texture aligns perfectly with the wood grain, gives the opportunity to betterreplicate the unique visual appearance of the real thing. As the first supplier to offer the synchronised pore worktops, the end result gives the natural look and feel of solid wood with all the durability, care and maintenance benefits of laminate. “Laminates continue to dominate the worktop market with an 85% share by volume, and we have put a lot of effort into ensuring our new products are able to replicate other finishes such as natural stone,
granite, solid surface and marble as well as woodgrains – that are now indistinguishable from the real thing,” says Elliott. EGGER’s new worktop range is available from October with the full range being held in stock nationally by EGGER’s network of distributors. Matching up-stands and splash backs are also available for every décor, as well as six new contrasting effects including quartz glass and stainless steel. A number of sales tools and point of sale material is also available to retailers.

ccording to a recent Lloyds Bank survey, almost two million homeowners are choosing to improve their home rather than move, and with kitchens being the primary focus for 40% of respondents, home upgrades are at the top of the agenda. Looking outside the UK, The European Home Report 2014 identified the kitchen as being the most prioritised room for improvement and research by Zopa has found that a new kitchen results, on average, in a 49% return on investment. With housing market reports indicating the market to be slowing down, coupled with record low rates on borrowing, home improvements are a cost-effective way to add value to your property for the long term. Howard Noh, Managing Director of Tristone UK Ltd, comments, “Homeowners are increasingly coming to us looking for affordable but effective ways of adding value to their properties. Simply replacing a kitchen worktop or a bathroom surface can dramatically transform the look and feel of any space. A change like this can be a quick and affordable fix that accommodates your changing tastes while boosting your property value.” Exploring the current trends, Mar Esteve Cortes, Marketing Project Manager at TheSize, comments, “Worktops and islands are replacing the kitchen table as the hub of a home, with marble, concrete, and timber-inspired worktops taking the centre stage as homeowners embrace classic aesthetics that have universal appeal.” Inviting textures that encourage the urge to reach out and touch are very much on-trend in 2015. Mar adds, “Timber, honed granite, marble and sintered surfaces are proving to be popular surfacing materials due to their tactile nature. This is perhaps a response to the high gloss finish that has dominated the kitchen over the last five years but has since waned in popularity as consumers seek the natural over the artificial.” Similarly, neutral tones continue to trend this year. Mar explains, “Dark charcoals, off whites and greys remain the ideal base tones to execute most design schemes, especially when used as a platform to build eye-catching aesthetics with more dynamic finishes since they provide the necessary contrast. Black is another dominant tone this year, particularly for worktops and cabinetry, used with restraint it can add sophistication to the overall design, applied in abundance the kitchen is typically perceived to carry a more masculine energy.” Finally, Timber is another emerging trend, a symptom of consumer desire for a natural feel in the kitchen environment. “Whether it’s the real thing, wood textured or a wood-inspired design, timber is in demand,” says Mar. “Oak and driftwood styles are experiencing a particular surge of interest in application to cabinetry, offering a stark feel to provide contrast to the rest of the kitchen. Just as with marble, there are better suited alternatives to timber in the kitchen; sintered surfaces being a prime example since they can match the timber aesthetic but with the essential advantage of having hygienic properties.”

MARKET INSIGHT What are the emerging door trends colours, textures, shape and finishes - for 2016? “Perfectly coordinated kitchens are being shunned in favour of spaces that contrast colours and textures. Some of the most popular kitchens will blend high gloss, wood tones and painted cabinetry to create unique and stylish rooms. Veneered doors, which offer high-gloss and grainmatching, will continue to prove popular, with high gloss and grain matching becoming an attractive option for high-end market design. “Painted kitchens, which combine modern and traditional elements, are also on trend with consumers looking to mix multiple colours within the kitchen. Greys are still very popular and will continue to be nexy year. However, we will be seeing a move to blues or a mix of lighter and darker colours on islands or wall units with a contrast on base units.” Gareth Atkin Director, Landau.
With bespoke services becoming the norm, what are manufacturers offering to differentiate themselves against the competition? “The concept of bespoke is rapidly changing, as engineering allows us to create design flexibility not previously available. Brands now use advanced technology to precision manufacture each individual kitchen to order. When a kitchen is designed for you, it is designed to fit the available space like a glove. “With so many cabinet, storage and finish options available – this is merely modern bespoke. With precisely measured designs, manufacturers can create specific width, depth or height for any flat surface and square edge door and it doesn’t have to cost the earth to do so. It’s the retailer’s job to use their savvy design skills to show some innovative combinations.” Wayne Dance Managing Director, InHouse Inspired Room Design.

How do you work with hard water?

“All Abode products are designed by our in-house UK designers with the worst possible water conditions at the front of their mind, so all taps and specifications for aerators, valve cartridges and material plating are designed to deal with the hardest water conditions. “Abode offer a range of water filter taps that use high Resin filters that counter the effects of hard water by temporarily changing the polarity of the water with the resin so the calcium does not adhere to the tap. The Granular activated carbon improves the taste and appearance of hard water whilst the inclusion of food grade polyphosphate within the filter helps ensure the calcium glides past the metallic surfaces, increasing the longevity of the mixer tap. “Abode provide maps for consumers to identify their water hardness and gives options for them to choose from. Abode also train retailers how to spot hard water conditions and refine their sales offer accordingly.”

With high levels of hard water in the UK, what is the best way for manufacturers and retailers to educate the consumer on the right products for their water type?

2. Zip has released two new tap designs, the Arc and Cube. Both designs can offer any combination of filtered boiling, chilled and sparkling water and can be situated away from a sink with the use of a font kit. They also feature a 0.2 micron filtration system for energy efficiency and a compact under-sink command centre. 0845 6005 005 • www.zipwater.com
“One of the most common mistakes when specifying a specialist tap, is not specifying one. Today the best appliances offer the very best technology, even in hard water areas, and the retailer can never assume that the customer will understand it, especially if they haven’t purchased a new appliance for a number of years. It is therefore imperative to demonstrate the appliance. Demonstrating the top of the range makes it easier to sell the features – seeing, touching and feeling the appliance develops confidence, as well as experiencing top level functionality; this may also tempt them to trade up to a higher specified model.”
3. The Vela LD Semi professional tap is pictured in a limited edition dual stainless steel finish. Also available in matte, both finishes have been hand polished by artisans with the third option available in polished black; PVD treated to form an extremely resistant finish that penetrates the metal. Its heavy-duty stainless steel flexible hose and 360° rotation means Vela can be positioned on an island, in the centre, to the right or to the left. 01772 698 111 • www.mgstaps.com

How relevant is hard water when designing a new tap? “All types of water are relevant to a design as mechanisms can be affected by water borne particles or hard water, so when designing a kitchen tap every stage of design is essential to ensure lasting performance and quality. To achieve superior results and exclusive products, we realised that it was necessary to make a fundamental change and move away from chrome plated brass, traditionally used in this industry, and use Stainless Steel. Regarded as the most hygienic of metals, stainless steel is extremely easy to clean; presenting a surface which has absolutely no pores or cracks that may harbour bacteria, mildew or collect hard water deposits.”

The Kinetico 2020c Water Softener is ideal for households with one to three bathrooms The AquaTap, designed to work with Kinetico’s unique drinking water system, offers a 1/4 turn full flow lever and removable spout.
Kinetico’s single spout and three way taps have been designed to work with a water softener or Kinetico Drinking Water system.
THE HARD FACTS Water softener expert, Mark Nepstad talks to K&BJ about the importance of water planning when creating a new kitchen and bathroom.
W
ater affects every area of our lives but it’s something that is often overlooked when considering a new kitchen or bathroom installation. “The reason for this is simple,” explains Mark Nepstad, Managing Director of Kinetico UK. “Consumers have not been educated on the damage hard water can do and the substantial benefits of having soft water in your home.” If you are one of the 13 million households in the UK living in a hard water area, limescale will be causing lasting damage to your home. In fact, if you live in a very hard water area (over 280 parts
per million) in just 12 months, you can experience up to 70kg of scale build up in your home. Any new bathroom or kitchen will not stay looking new for long with hard water - you can say goodbye to shiny taps, sparkling draining boards, free flowing showers and smear free shower screens. There is also the limescale damage you can’t see. Your boiler, heating system and appliances will work less efficiently if furred up with limescale and over time, can even cause your boiler to break down. So what is the answer? Kinetico, leaders in water treatment, specialise in the manufacturing of water softeners and water

Hard water can affect the look and effectiveness of your kitchen and bathroom appliances caused by limescale build up.

filtration systems. “At Kinetico, we believe that everyone deserves great quality water in their home and our commitment to this cause has seen us spearhead innovative water softening technology for more than 40 years, both for domestic and commercial use,” says Mark. As the inventor of the nonelectric, twin tank water softener, Kinetico’s SuperSoft water softener and award-winning 2020c softener – which has the Good Housekeeping accreditation and a House Beautiful Award – Kinetico’s designs continue to lead the market, softening the water throughout your whole home and giving you a constant supply 24 hours a day. Mark adds, “Installing a Kinetico water softener can protect your home and the investment you’ve made in a new kitchen and bathroom and ultimately save you time

cleaning. It has also been proven to help smooth your skin and soften hair.” Kinetico also specialises in multifunctional taps and Drinking Water Systems, carbon filtration systems and the more advanced Reverse Osmosis systems, both designed to take the impurities out of your drinking water such as lead, chlorine, viruses and bacteria. New to the UK market, Kinetico has just launched Kube – an innovative drinking water system that unlike many other filters on the market actually attaches to your existing tap so no need to install an additional one. It can also work very well in tangent with your water softener. The perfect replacement for the filter jug and more economical giving you a plentiful supply of pure, filtered water 24 hours a day.

What advice can you give to retailers looking to display hard water treatment products in their showroom? “When consulting with customers in the showroom, Kinetico wants to make it an engaging experience and we believe that giving the customer the opportunity to feel and experience soft water is the key to convincing them. That’s why, with the softener unit plumbed in, we would recommend an interactive demonstration, inviting the customer to wash their hands in hard and soft water so they can truly appreciate the different. Props displaying scaled-up taps, clogged appliance elements and blocked shower heads also aid the customer with the buying process. “We’ll be the first to admit that water treatment can be confusing so we’ll take out the guess work and provide the retailer with as much support as they need to convince the customer that soft water really is the key to protecting their newly installed kitchen or bathroom. “Kinetico also supports all of its retailers with a wealth of marketing collateral to assist the customer in the buying process.”
What are your predictions for the water softener market going forward? “Despite millions of households facing the daily grind of scrubbing limescale from kitchens and bathrooms, market penetration for water softeners is still relatively low, but growing. Kinetico has led the way in driving market growth by being the first water softener manufacturer to engage in a national consumer advertising campaign to increase awareness of the category, our brand and of course our award-winning products. “We have seen double digit growth over the past two years and we predict that the market will double in next three years. We are very excited about our future and unleashing the market potential hand in hand with our retailers.”

Talking trends with Wayne Dance, Managing Director at InHouse Inspired Room Design: “We don’t have the benefit of heaps of space in the UK and we tend to eat in more, so our kitchens need to have optimal levels of functionality. Demand for mid height storage solutions is growing quickly, with the emphasis on making kitchens as fluid as possible. For years we have been bending down unnecessarily to unload dishwashers and stooping to retrieve heavy items from lower levels. With designs now incorporating mid level cabinets capable of bearing heavier items and storage fixtures, those days are gone. “As we continue with our love of open plan spaces, storage will be increasingly utilised to create features and personalise the kitchen and so storage that combines with display is a fast growing trend. Island units with open corners create eye-catching features and dispense with fishing around into hard to reach spaces. Banks of door fronts are interspersed with contrasting open display cabinets, because some stored items look better on display. Storage is now coming out of the closet.” The current storage market in the eyes of Bernard Otulakowski, Managing Director, SieMatic UK: “One of the most interesting developments in interior storage solutions is the integration of technology. Our smartphones and tablets are now vital to our daily lives and so it makes sense that the kitchen, one of the most lived in areas of the home, adapts to suit this need. Tec sensitive surfaces and integrated USB charging stations in our drawers can limit the clutter in our kitchens. “Our most trend conscious customers are looking for a design which is modern and minimalist, but with warmth and individuality. Our designers are achieving this by mixing cabinetry from different ranges and making a feature out of textures and finishes. For instance, matt white handle-less cabinets work so well when teamed with subtle metallic doors or rich wood veneers and slim stone worktops. It’s not a flashy look, but elegant, simple, and understated. With these kitchens, it’s not a matter of choosing either matt or glossy, or colour or wood, but bringing together a palette of harmonious finishes which can play off each other.”

MARKET INSIGHT Tom Long, Sales Manager for Aestus talks to KBJ about the current heating and ventilation market. How have heating and ventilation products evolved to stay in keeping with the modern bathroom? “Over the past few years the market for designer radiators and towel warmers in the bathroom has rapidly expanded becoming a must-have accessory. Not only is there a greater amount of choice than ever before, but in many cases the quality and design of heating products available has also improved with new technologies and innovations becoming standard fare. We all know that it hasn’t been boom times economically but in this product sector in particular, manufacturers have created a desirability factor through a combination of unique designs and marketing initiatives which has ensured that there is more consumer awareness of designer radiators and towel warmers generally. My feeling is that once you have created a must-have product commodity, consumers will be prepared to spend more to get what they want, at the quality they demand.”
3
With many heating products becoming a style statement, what are the latest trends in design? “In terms of style, traditional and contemporary trends continue to define the market. Heating solutions that offer tiny footprints continue to lend themselves to ultra modern décors and 21st century homes where reduced profiles and minimalist designs look effortlessly stylish yet remain highly functional. Traditional designs remain popular with the younger generations where modern interiors met with retro and classic finishing touches are becoming more universal. Monochrome, graphical and geometric styling is being partnered with quality raw materials to enhance both the look and performance of the design radiator or towel rail with stainless steel and brass remaining fundamental materials for such heating solutions. Incredibly versatile and most importantly, durable, this type of material is suited to both open and closed heating circuits.”
Does technology play a part in top end market differentiation? If so, how? “High quality heating solutions are definitely influencing bathroom design, with technological advancement coming to the fore to meet the needs of the anytime, anywhere generation. This has
seen 21st century heating solutions now being manufactured with technology to allow homeowners to control the heat output much more precisely to suit individual preferences and life styles. “Features such as concealed valves, adjustable fixings or built-in thermostatic controls for practical placement and maximum user convenience, continue to gain momentum in the heating market. Bespoke design has allowed manufacturers to tailormake a designer radiator or towel rail to specific user and space requirements; such as a strategically placed thermostatic valve that can remotely control a radiator up to five metres away.”
What are your predictions for the market going forward? “Stainless steel and brass remain two fundamental materials for the design of superior heating solutions. Incredibly versatile and most importantly, durable, such material is suitable for connection to both open and closed heating circuits only adding to the growth and popularity of brass and stainless steel towel rail and radiator models.”

The Simply Silent™ Contour uses advanced Ghost™ Air Movement Technology to deliver near-silent running.
Simply Silent™ Contour effectively eliminates humidity, condensation and odour to improve air quality in bathrooms and toilets.
NOISY NEIGHBOUR? Are you being kept awake by a noisy extractor fan? If the answer is yes, then take a closer look at Xpelair’s Simply Silent™ range of fans.
The Simply Silent™ Contour avoids all forms of mechanical noise through long-life silent running motors and, thanks to advanced airflow management, irregular airflow paths are eliminated.
M
ore than 14m adults in the UK have been affected by a noisy bathroom or kitchen fan in their homes, according to new research commissioned by ventilation expert, Xpelair. The independent study highlights the scale of the problem faced by homeowners, including many who have been woken up or kept awake by a noisy fan. Just under a half of the British adult population rated their existing bathroom fan as noisy, whilst a quarter of those described it as annoyingly noisy. The survey results also highlighted the impact that bathroom fans are having on poor sleep, with over 4.5 million adults having been woken up or kept awake by a noisy fan. Lee Stones, Category Manager for Xpelair, said: “The research highlights a very real problem for many homeowners but it also suggests people are just putting up with noisy fans – perhaps because they don’t know any better. “Through extensive research and development, Xpelair has proved that a
high performance level does not necessarily mean high noise levels. Using the latest in ventilation technology, we have developed a range of domestic solutions using our innovative Ghost Air Movement Technology to deliver near-silent running, including the Simply Silent family. Lee continues, “Behind the scenes at Xpelair, there has been huge investment in our research and development teams and in our manufacturing facilities. Unlike some of our competitors that have introduced one or two silent products, our mission is to make all of our bathroom fans silent and really set the industry benchmark. We are committed to improving health and wellbeing through indoor air quality and air comfort – and this includes noise levels in the home.” Xpelair’s Simply Silent™ range is an innovative family of products. With Simply Silent Contour, Simply Silent CV, Simply Silent DX and Simply Silent Show Fan Complete, Xpelair offers a suite of near silent running products that drive down the volume for homeowners.

“While we are still a long way off our Continental neighbours in terms of wall-hung sales, volume is growing steadily in the UK, with consumers’ willingness to invest in quality bathroom fittings to make the space look as luxurious as possible rising. This means the average budget for a new bathroom, regardless of its size, is increasing.”
Mark Larden Managing Director, Geberit

MARKET INSIGHT What are the latest brassware trends on the market? “When looking at the new build market, we can see a growing European influence, with basin mixers, which are the norm on the continent, replacing pillar taps. When looking at the UK RMI (repair, maintenance and improvement) market though, pillar taps are still often the brassware of choice. In the UK it’s predominantly deck mounted basin and bath mixers whereas in Europe wall mounted products are used more frequently.
1. Chao is one of eight new chrome bathroom tap ranges for 2015 from Abode. The basin mixer – with single handed control – can be teamed with both conventional basins, as a deck mounted tap installation option and side with deck mounted basins. Easy to install with minimal disruption to bathroom walls. 01959 560 000 • www.aqualisa.co.uk
“Recent changes to Part G regulations in the UK have also meant that thermostatic products are on the increase, so that water temperature is easily controlled, increasing safety in the bathroom by reducing the potential of scalding.” Barbara Osborne Product Manager at Methven UK.
“Heritage, authenticity and the highest of quality and performance are all words synonymously linked to top end design, and for me, it is the attention to detail and level of superior quality, which set our products aside from the economy and mid-market ranges available. Contemporary British design is more subtlety patriotic, moving away from the rather trademark classical look, seeing sleek, modern British designs such as low profile spouts, deco styling and tactile finishes stand firm as the bathroom favourite.” David Cole Sales Director, Perrin & Rowe.
How has the market evolved in the last five years and what are your predictions for the market going forward?
5
“Despite the high production costs associated with stainless steel manufacturing, the market persevered, resulting in specialist suppliers like us being able to exclusively bring a range of unique taps to market. As we go forward in time I can see the green and lead free attributes of Stainless Steel becoming more essential and even more in demand.” Doug Hart Grange Design.
