Franke’s new Atmos hood features an innovative Steam Control System to solve the problem of dripping condensation by capturing rising steam before it condenses on surfaces. Ideal for use with induction hobs where condensation can be more common, the hood uses a second motor which emits air jets that create a vortex effect. This draws up the steam and eliminates water droplets forming. It is available in three sizes of 60, 90 and 120cm wide. Operated using touch controls, the Atmos has three speeds plus an intensive setting to capture rising steam and odours. 0161 436 6280 • www.franke.co.uk

IT’S IN FRANKE’S DNA Franke installs its first premium made-to-order stainless steel worksurface in the UK…

Charlie’s worktop is paired with two KWC ZOE sinks, the 110-17 and 110-50, featuring a unique ghost overflow, together with a KWC ERA soap dispenser and ERA tap with pull-down nozzle in solid stainless steel.

V presenter and architectural designer, Charlie Luxton, is known for his love of sustainable architecture and use of simple, honest materials. His latest project – the design and build of his own family home in the Cotswolds – has seen Franke install its very first bespoke stainless steel worksurface in the UK, as the manufacturer launches its new offering at the upper-mid and luxury segments of the kitchen market. “My house is inspired by the landscape around me,” begins Charlie. “I wanted to reference the rustic heritage of this area by using local stone - known for its iron rust and veining – and limit the number of materials used throughout our home to reflect the home’s passive design principles. To do this, I stripped back the design and partnered honest, hardwearing materials to create a design that would stand the test of time both aesthetically and practically. This made Stainless steel my go-to material in the kitchen.” Working with Franke to create a madeto-order stainless steel worksurface, Charlie was given complete control over the look and feel of the kitchen. The bespoke range, which launched this month, offers superior

creative scope for the premium kitchen market. Offering a choice of a PureSteel and FineSteel, several thicknesses from as little as 4mm, six different finishes and the ability to work with island units as large as 5m x 1.9m in a single element, the design possibilities are endless. Franke’s FineSteel worksurface in BandFinish worked with Charlie’s vision perfectly. He says, “From a designer’s point of view, I love the singularity of the material and the grains – similar to wood – that deepen with age. It’s important to stress that stainless steel doesn’t stay perfect forever but that adds to the character of the worksurface. Just like the lines and marks on our faces tell our story, the same can be said for materials in our home. Like all elemental materials, over time, this stainless steel surface will become richer and more textured. The natural beauty of the product does the rest.” Aesthetics aside, equally as important to Charlie are the practical benefits to the work surface. “There’s a reason why stainless steel worksurfaces are installed in professional kitchens. Stainless steel is hard-wearing and it can stand its ground when faced with the most

The range features a choice of PureSteel (pictured) or FineSteel in several thicknesses from as little as 4mm.

A material that can compete with all this and still look good deserves high praise indeed.” As well as the hygiene benefits widely associated with stainless steel, Franke’s new range goes one step further in creating a user-friendly material. It’s PearlFinish – a worldwide exclusive surface finish – is a unique glass ceramic coating that repels water, features an anti-fingerprint coating and is heat resistant up to 300°C. Plus, like all designs in this range, a choice of 20 sink options and any tap from Franke and KWC ranges can be incorporated. Gas burners can also be integrated for a luxury aesthetic. Each worksurface in the range will be precision-manufactured in Franke factories with a template and an installing service provided by F Jones of Cleveland, a longestablished UK company with expertise in the premium worksurfaces sector. Charlie adds, “I’ve commissioned a lot of stainless steel worksurfaces in my career and it’s hard to

Charlie’s kitchen was created using a FineSteel worksurface in BandFinish, custom made in a 4500 x 650 x 40mm size with a rebated end section. find fabricators that have the same eye for detail as me. It takes a lot of time, energy, effort and expenditure to make something look perfect but the results of this installation speak for themselves. F Jones of Cleveland’s attention to detail was incredible. During their initial site visit, they scanned the kitchen area to calculate the exact angles and lengths of the walls and cabinets. It looked like pretty space-age equipment but the installation was millimetre perfect. I cannot praise both Franke and the installation team enough and I will certainly be using this surface in my projects in the future.” Neil Clarke, MD of Franke UK adds, “Stainless steel is in Franke’s DNA and the worksurfaces complement our core products of sinks and taps. They are a natural design link allowing us to offer a completely bespoke solution with superior aesthetic and design value to retailers working on high calibre projects. The range strengthens our ability to serve the market with products from the mid

to luxury segments, as well as reaffirming the relevance of the Franke brand with our core studio customers. There are so many innovations in worksurfaces materials at the moment, together with a desire for creative and customised design, that it’s perfect timing to bring our high grade stainless steel worksurfaces to the UK.”

bimis is known for incorporating the very latest design innovations into beautifully bespoke stainless steel kitchens but imagine a kitchen that not only looks the part but helps you, the chef, during the preparation, preservation and serving of food. Sound to good to true? Then think again. With a profound knowledge of the professional restaurant and catering industry, Abimis has created a kitchen that replicates the practical benefits of a restaurant kitchen, whilst offering the comfort and style you come to expect from a Abimis residential kitchen. Preserving food is a priority in this 21st century kitchen. That’s why modules, drawers or doors can be equipped with cooling systems, prolonging the shelf life and freshness of food. A refrigerated bin compartment, which when set to a constant 6°C, also neutralises

unpleasant odours and reduces the spread of bacteria, especially in humid waste. When dishing up food, a heating system, which can be positioned in a compartment or beneath the stainless steel top, has also been designed to help you when dishing up your food. The integrated system keeps your dishes warm and can be set to your desired temperature. Last but not least, all Abimis kitchens are designed to house ovens, blast chillers and wine cellars. Suitable for use with all manufacturers, each kitchen is tailored to the tastes and habits of the user and, with pioneering technology and functional design that stems from the professional kitchen, Abimis continues to redefine the humble kitchen, making it as unique as the dishes you prepare.

ON YOUR METAL With the latest metallic décors from David Clouting it’s now possible to match furniture to kitchen appliances and retain hard wearing, fingerprint-free properties…

T

he rise of metallic décors in the furniture sector has been relentless over the last few years. With every exhibition, we’re seeing more and more options ranging from metallic effects in fantasy designs and shimmer effects in woodgrains to brilliant coppers, golds and stainless steels. The Korean company, LG, is one of the largest manufacturers of steel lamination grade décors for use on household appliances, so it was almost inevitable that sooner or later LG Hausys would introduce the same quality of finish you’ll find on refrigerators and freezers to the furniture design sector. Available in the UK through David Clouting Ltd, you can now buy flat lamination grade

metallic décor foils that have been specially adapted for application to MDF and match those used on appliances from the market leaders. And if you’re quick, your company could be among the first to pioneer the logical development of a trend that shows no sign of slowing down. David Clouting Ltd has introduced two embosses in four colours. The embosses are exceptionally realistic brushed stainless steel effects, one with stratified brushing that is perfect for emphasising the vertical or horizontal lines in your furniture designs, and a second with shorter, more random brush strokes. “Both décors are 0.3mm and are quite rigid because

Four colours are available including a warm tone that works beautifully with strong woodgrains. of the metal that’s in them,” explained Mike Clouting, Managing Director of David Clouting Ltd. “They have a Hard Coat finish that makes them exceptionally hard wearing and, unlike real stainless steel, the Hard Coat makes them resistant to fingerprints.” A great selling point when faced with a stylish but busy home. Cool steel is complemented by warmer tones that will enliven strong woodgrains when used in combination and, although perfect for use in the kitchen, they will also work well in bathrooms and as accents in open-plan living spaces. Both versions (in all four colours) are in stock and available now.

The softer brushed stainless steel effect is one of two embosses that will be available by the end of the year.

THE CONSUMER WISH LIST 2018 has seen the rise of the ultra-thin worktops but with 2019 fast approaching, K&B Journal asks if this trend is here to stay…

W

hat do consumers want? If we knew that, we’d be laughing all the way to the bank. But, whilst consumer trends and buying patterns can seem fickle and erratic to many, industry experts are becoming increasing confident in their ability to predict future trends – including identifying key themes, supporting palettes, surfacing aesthetics and colour combinations - highlighting global influences and foreseeing areas of growth and depletion in the market. The worktop sector is no different, as experts continue to explore future trends and provide essential insight into factors that will inevitably drive the development of surfacing material for the years ahead. 2018 has seen the rise of the superslim worktop and with that has seen the demand for slim dimensions, subtler colourways and light texture grow – luring consumers away from granite and favouring marbles and marble-esqs.

But will the trend for skinny worktops continue into 2019? Neil Horton, commercial director for the UK and Europe for Bushboard tells us more… “Clutter-free kitchens with large areas of clear and textured worktops and the must-have breakfast bar – inspired by TV Dramas and reality shows - are high on the customer wish list. Many consumers want to achieve the super-luxury look they see in films, on TV and social media but don’t have enormous budgets. Manufacturers in all sectors of the kitchen market have risen to this challenge, creating surfaces, furniture, appliances and accessories that emulate the upper levels of design at a fraction of the cost. In the worktop area, brands like our own also offer clear benefits over real stones, marbles, solid woods, concrete, steel, or copper, not just the cost savings. “The last few years have seen consumers choosing chunky, thick work-surfaces featuring significant contrasts in colour and textures.

Neil Horton

Favourite combinations have been cream, white or ivory units teamed with dark wooden flooring and dark coloured tops perhaps with a splash of orange, copper, blue or red. Standard worktops are 40mm thick, but deeper materials gave tops the chunky look of being 60-100mm or even 150mm thick. “This year, customers want far thinner worktops, with empathetic textures that remind them of nature, featuring more subtle colours with marble-type veining and lightening details. There is still a significant demand for surfaces with sparkle, but natural veining that is less densely patterned than marble and in different shades of white, grey, and sepia browns are tipped as a top trend. Thickness is anything from 22mm to 12.5mm. Whilst favoured colours in kitchen furniture are predicted to be soft greys, blue-greys, white and naturals with stainless steel continuing to lead in appliances.”

Silestone® Brooklyn - an intense grey hue with the effect of weathered concrete

CEMENTING THE TREND Cosentino launches T its Silestone Loft ®

Series, offering a softer approach to industrial design…

he industrial look is a growing trend in the KBB market and as such, is heavily influencing the look and feel of decorative surfaces in the home. Offering a fresh and contemporary take on the industrial and architectural look of concrete and cement, Consentino has launched its Silestone® Loft Series, an edit of two new colours Brooklyn and Silver Lake – and a new matt finish, Raw. The new Loft Series plays into the traditional Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi (侘寂) – which means the acceptance of transition and the ability to see the beauty in imperfections. The new colours certainly do that, as they offer both a pared back elegance and a nod to the trend for urban inspired aesthetics. They also offer all the practical benefits of other Silestone® quartz

surfaces. rey is still the colour of the moment and is set to continue its domination into 2019. This trend continues to be seen in both solid colours and woodgrains within the KBB market. Renolit’s latest range of décors allows the industry to combine exciting new tones and woodgrains that play subtly into the hands of this popular colourway. Renolit’s latest woodgrains – part of its 3D thermoformable film offering - explores different ways they can be combined with new, classic and bold modern solid colours, providing interior designers with a new array of possibilities. Rockford Hickory: Hickory wood in nature displays characteristics of being very hard, firm, dense and shock resistant. Reproduced by

Renolit as a 3D thermoformable film, the light, medium and dark colour variations represent this combination of strength, toughness, and hardness. The depth of the design is created by light pores and contrasting cathedrals. Variation of pattern and colour emphasizes the designs’ natural beauty. Light Rockford Hickory (pictured): Ideal for bedrooms and living spaces to provide a bright and airy atmosphere to either small or spacious rooms. Perfect for new build properties against magnolia or white backgrounds. For a modern statement pair with bold colours such as Dried Date Supermatt or Dried Mango Supermatt. Natural Rockford Hickory: Best suited to kitchens and interior furniture, the warm

golden tones of Natural Rockford Hickory sit comfortably in a traditional room setting. Create a classic but contemporary appearance combined with Mussel Suedette Matt, and jazz it up with Bronze Metallic. Dark Rockford Hickory (pictured): The deep rich tones create a warm sophisticated look. Pair with Stone Grey Suedette Matt for a statement look against neutral colours or mix with Conifer Green to fit with the latest nature trend. Ribeira Ash Painted Q: Presented in its own shade of taupe in a horizontal orientation, the bright and charismatic design conveys Scandinavian freshness and strong light-dark contrasts. Vibrant growth rings, prominent cathedrals and subtly curved lines give the décor a powerful elegance. The structured emboss underlines the liveliness of the design with a deep feel and natural variety. With multi-functional

appeal, this design works well in furniture, kitchen and bathroom installations in combination with Pearl Grey Suedette Matt and Cement Supermatt. Nordic Wood: A subtle design consisting of a natural grain, soft lines and neutral tones and characterised by simplicity, minimalism and functionality. White Nordic Wood: It shouts archetypical Scandinavian. Complete the crisp light look with Denim Suedette Matt or Northern Lights Supermatt. Grey Nordic Wood (pictured): This design introduces a soft natural white-grey tone for a warmer finish making a dynamic addition to bathroom furniture. The neutral tones can mix with a variety of colours to transform the atmosphere; White Grey Suedette Matt to keep it fresh and light, Century Wolfram Grey adds sophistication, or Vibration Supermatt to bring in a delightful bold trend colour.

OVENS WITH Richard Hibbert from The Kitchen Showroom in Sudbury talks about consumer reaction to wifienabled appliances…

S

urely but steadily, the influence of the internet is making its way into every aspect of our homes and our lives. Kitchen appliance manufacturers have embraced the technology, both for its capacity to make life easier, and for the potential sales advantage its cutting-edge functionality provides. But does having an oven that can be managed from a smartphone, or a coffee machine that will match your mood to your drink and make it seconds after it receives a verbal command from Alexa provide consumers with an increased incentive to buy, or is it simply a switch-off that will see technophobes turn and run for the door? The Kitchen Showroom in Sudbury, Suffolk, has been selling Siemens appliances (and others) for the last 29 years and Richard Hibbert, the son of the founder, has been with

TKS for the last 15 of them. A chef himself, Richard has presided over an era in which ovens have become more feature-packed and complex, most with the intention of making it easier for consumers who want to cook meals to perfection every time - but some, he says, in an effort to leapfrog the competition, have become nothing short of gimmicky. With their top end wifi-enabled Studioline product, he’s confident Siemens has got the balance between style, functionality and convenience right – and with typical TKS clients who spend £25-40,000 and occasionally up to £100,000 on their kitchens, it’s given him something else to talk about that doesn’t cost them more. “These days, people are more naturally used to using an iPhone and have a grasp of technology,” Richard told Kitchen & Bathroom Journal. “We’re now starting to see

APP-TITUDE

people coming in and asking for this kind of technology. Age doesn’t matter because you’ll find four year olds and their grannies who can use an iPad. Siemens’ target market is people who are looking for something a bit more stylish, classy, functional but not gimmicky. Studioline is a good fit for people who want a more modern kitchen and want to equip it with more technologically advanced appliances. Even with people who don’t want to use the benefits that come with wifi now, you’ve got the longevity angle: if it’s in there, in three years’ time they might get around to using it. “Probably 50-60% of the ovens we sell are now equipped with wifi and can be operated from the App,” says Richard. “The App is an extra you can talk about that’s built into the Studioline product. It’s not a hard sell, not at all. Most people these days have an iPad or

a smartphone, and Siemens’ Home Connect App technology is very intuitive. In general, they tend to think if it doesn’t cost them more to have it and they can grow into it, then why not? It has a perceived value because it’s genuinely useful and makes life easier. “When you start to show customers how easy it is to set up, to view, to cook their food, and explain the convenience of being able to control the oven remotely and even set it to self-clean overnight at a time that suits them, they quickly see it’s an added value product. They also like the energy-saving benefits. If you’ve got food in the oven, the convenience of being able to turn it down if you pop out and bump into a friend unexpectedly on the way back is something anyone can see, and they’ll quickly start to visualise it as a part of their lives. If they have kids, it’s not hard to imagine

ovens 28 • kitchen & bathroom journal october 2018

how easy it would be to set the oven remotely for a 12-year-old who decides he wants to cook a pizza when Mum and Dad are out.” One of the key benefits of the Siemens Home Connect App is that it provides step by step guidance and, especially for users who may find difficulty operating the controls on the oven, or might be less abled and find difficulty standing, the App brings an extra layer of convenience. “The App enables you to do everything you can do at the oven but from the convenience of your sofa,” says Richard. “Because it can be used with an iPad, everything is much larger and easier to see and, of course, once you’ve selected what you want to cook, entered the weight and the time you want it to start cooking, you don’t have to do anything until the App tells you it’s finished. “The Studioline cooker includes a range of oven types – like steam, combi and microwaves - that cut the cooking time down. The Siemens VarioSpeed function combines microwave and conventional cooking saving up to 50% of the time it takes to cook something like a jacket potato, reducing energy consumption and giving you a crispy

skin. If you use the microwave separately, a safety function of the App is it will tell you that you need to wait until the oven has cooled if you’ve used the fan oven beforehand. If you’ve just cooked a roast dinner at 200 degrees and the next thing you want to do is prove some bread, the App will also give you a visual saying the oven has to cool down first. The appliance is warning you through the App.” It’s one of a range of safety features Siemens has built in that TKS customers like. “If you’re using the meal planner, the App will choose the best cooking method. The meal planner is built into the appliance anyway, but the Home Connect App takes you through menus, meals, etc., prompting you more easily than the controls on the cooker.” It doesn’t yet tell you in which order and at what time to put a veg tray or the Yorkshires in if you’re already cooking a roast, but Richard is confident this will be the next step: “Some appliance manufacturers already do meal planning that involves three products, and the App tells you when to put each tray in and at what level. Things like that can be easily added to the App and demand will drive

development. The more people use it, the more they’ll want from it and that’s what will drive the next developments.” At TKS, Richard demonstrates the Home Connect App in conjunction with an IFTTT App controlled by Alexa. If everything in the kitchen is Siemens wifi enabled, it’s already easy to control the oven, the coffee centre, the fridge freezer, the dishwasher, the tumble drier and the washing machine. And, of course, Alexa can dim the lights, turn on the music and much more from one voice command. “The next step in the development of the App will probably enable appliances to work together a lot more,” says Richard. “I expect you’ll be able to scan your food as you put it in your fridge and that same barcode will tell your cooker what the product is and how much it weighs so it will instantly know how to cook it. There are already barcoded foods. It’s only a matter of reading the code. If it’s connected to automated food ordering, the fridge will tell you what’s missing and order it. It’s a trend that will develop because what people want from it will push the development. The market is certainly ready for it.”

Hawa Concepta pivot folding door

FLEXIBILITY FROM SLIDES Häfele UK’s Elizabeth Briggs explains how sliding door gear can help to achieve a multitude of desired room finishes…

Elizabeth Briggs

T

here has been a massive shift in recent years towards creating open plan living spaces and finding ways to bring the outside in. Sliding door systems offer one solution, and as one of the largest providers of sliding door gear in the UK, Häfele offers a particularly wide range covering mot applications. “Sliding Door systems don’t need to be restricted to structural applications,” says Häfele UK’s Product Group Manager, Elizabeth Briggs. “There are a large variety of systems that allow furniture manufacturers to complete sleek, minimal designs and provide furniture solutions that make the most use of space in the home: “At Häfele, we have been seeing a gradual increase in the trend for ‘European style’ door solutions to help hide away sections of a room – perfect for open and broken plan living where space needs to fulfil both practical and decorative functions. The Concepta system from Hawa is one solution to consider: it’s a cabinet door system that offers a pivot sliding option for one door, or

folding pivot sliding system for two or more doors. The doors recede into a pocket within the cabinet run and don’t require a floor channel so they can be used in different room settings with no obstructions. A unique scissor action is used to move the doors on the pivot sliding system and it can hold doors weighing up to 25kg each. “Sliding systems also provide a great space-saving alternative to traditional opening mechanisms in cabinets. There are mechanisms available on the market to accommodate any number of panels and sizes. The Eku Frontino system is one of Häfele’s favourite systems, as it provides a truly flush finish across cabinet doors rather than a stepped finish, and it can support door weights up to 40kg depending on the running system. “Häfele manufactures it’s own brand of sliding door gear, Slido, and these have been purpose designed to help save time and money. Our top hung Classic system is the perfect example of this, as the classic tracking can be used across all weights of door and

door design 32 • kitchen & bathroom journal october 2018

The Slido 80-S

The Slido 80-S

Room Flex system cabinet sizes and only the running gear changes depending on the weight of door required,” says Elizabeth. “This offers larger furniture manufacturers the ability to stock the track in larger quantities and use exactly the same tooling across all their cabinetry, as the easy-to-install running gear is fitted at a later stage. All of Häfele’s own brand ranges are also fully supported by a guarantee, and this is valid for 10 years across all Slido products.” Sliding Door mechanisms offer a practical solution to achieving openings in

virtually any small space and really come into their own when customers are trying to maximise the use of space through moveable walls and room dividers. “A system like the Slido Design 80-M achieves a floating finish on the wall through clever use of hidden tracks and fixings and it’s ideal for areas that leave minimal room for the swing arc of a traditional door opening,” says Elizabeth. “The Slido Design 80-S achieves the same finish with the additional benefit of increased soundproofing.

“Where there is a demand for ‘broken’ living rather than ‘open’ living, a system like the Room Flex offers a timber-framed solution that can divide spaces up to 4m wide. The folding action of the doors can be divided between two directions, or all doors can fold to the same side and, critically, this top hung system doesn’t need any channel guidance or rebating for the hangers or the hinges. It is a quick and easy installation solution that’s ideal as a retrofit room divider, or to offer as a solution for projects where laid floors already exist.”

INSPIRING UTOPIA The technical support from Grass UK was as important to Utopia as the quality, style and engineering in the latest Grass products…

Lustre, Powder Grey

F

or over 25 years, Utopia has been designing and manufacturing high quality bathroom suites, bathroom furniture, worktops, mirrors and bathroom accessories. A UK manufacturer with a dedicated production facility in Wolverhampton, Utopia Bathrooms has developed something of a reputation for being progressive in its thinking - and with its latest ranges of furniture, its designers have chosen some of the most progressive, design-led drawer and hinge systems on the market to accentuate and complement both the look and the functionality of the new cabinets it is already rolling out through a network of 600 dealerships around the UK. “When we first came into contact with Utopia on our stand at KBB, they were looking for new ideas and noticed the Nova Pro Scala drawer system,” recalls Wayne Nabal, Managing Director of the movement systems specialist, Grass UK. “They wanted something different, something fresh and innovative that would give them individuality. It was the ability to personalise their furniture that they really liked about the Novo Pro

Scala drawer system. They liked the shape and the colour – the silver was a nice neutral colour they felt they could put with a beech or oak décor panel. They decided to use an oak base and back with matching décor sides in their Roseberry range.” “During the development of the Roseberry range we were looking for a drawer system that offered something different from the normal grey/silver metal sided drawer box,” Utopia told Furniture Journal, adding, “We wanted something a little more organic, without compromising on a quality engineered drawer system – that’s what the Novapro Scala system offered with the thinner profile metal sides and ease of adjustment. The thinner profile allows us to adopt a profile side to match the drawer box base, backs and rails.” Nova Pro Scala is a very contemporary looking drawer with a sharp radius to the edges of the drawer side that gives the effect of a thin wall drawer from a double wall system. “The benefit is you have a step in the drawer side that enables you to add a décor panel to the side of the drawer, and that’s

door design 36 • kitchen & bathroom journal october 2018

The stability provided by the M9 thin door hinge enabled Utopia to design a unique high wall-mounted cabinet for its Star range that pivots completely off the wall to leave only a mirror panel.

exactly what they were looking for,” explains Wayne. “Nobody else in the market has that kind of décor side.” But Utopia went one stage further: with its latest ground-breaking collection of three modular ranges launched in June 2017 – Star, Lustre and Opula – Utopia’s designers wanted to explore combinations of exciting materials, such as glass, metal and solid surface, and some very unusual, eye-catching cabinet designs. That posed a number of technical as well as design issues, not least the familiar problem of affixing a metal hinge to a glass door. “Utopia decided to use the Grass Mirro hinge,” explains Wayne. “Their glass supplier was already working with Grass products and was able to supply glass with the Mirro adapter plate already affixed, so this way they could have the glass or mirror door they wanted with the added benefits of a soft close and damping adjustment.”

Star, Indigo

One of the really eye-catching features in the Star range is a 400mm wide x 255mm deep x 1600mm high wall-mounted cabinet that pivots completely off the wall leaving only a mirror panel. “The idea is that anyone putting makeup on can store products on the shelf inside the door and see to put it on in the mirror,” explains Andy Cartlidge, Utopia’s Design Engineer. “I don’t think there’s another product on the market that would enable us to do that. We’ve taken a lot of the weight out of the design so you can store a couple of kilos on each shelf but the beauty of the hinge is it’s more substantial, so it works really well.” The product Utopia chose was the Grass M9 thin door hinge and the result was a new design of cabinet with a 110° opening angle. Very attractive it is too, especially in the brand new 2017 colour, Indigo. Aside from the products themselves, the key issue that persuaded Utopia to work with

Grass was the availability of good technical support from the team at Grass UK. “The advice and help from Grass allowed us to find the right solutions in finding the optimum depth of runner so we could maximise the storage for both the top and bottom drawers,” Utopia told Furniture Journal. Technical support included helping Utopia make up models so they could work more freely on their designs, colours and ranges, and providing support in the factory with a Nova Pro drawer press so they could produce the drawers on the press to exacting specifications. “The technical support from our Technical Sales Manager, Tony Berrow, was key to us winning the business,” confirms Wayne. “Utopia really liked the product but they weren’t sure about the technical assembly, or how it would fit within their production line. He was the guy that made it happen for them.”

GLACIER CREATES

AN AVALANCHE The Glacier door range has become quite a success for Browns 2000 customers – and with good reason…

S

ince August 2011, when Browns 2000 launched their Glacier door range, its success in the market has provided a model many might wish they could emulate. With some 1500 loyal customers in the UK and more joining the throng whenever they learn of the benefits of the Glacier range, what started as a snowflake has progressed through the snowball stage and is rapidly becoming an avalanche. But what’s made this range of high gloss slab doors - and the more recently launched supermatts in the Glacier range - such a success story for Browns 2000? According to Graeme Brown, the answer is surprisingly simple: it’s all down to quality and the culture of good oldfashioned service Browns 2000 customers have come to expect.

“We produce a lot of wardrobe doors as well as kitchen doors,” Graeme told Kitchen & Bathroom Journal. “It’s common practice to laminate the material on the face and then use an inferior product to balance on the reverse. To eliminate the chance of bowed products, we were keen to use Senoplast acrylic. It was the best high gloss in the market, but Senoplast is 0.7mm thick. You can’t use a 0.3mm balancer on the reverse of an 18mm board or it’s going to bend.” The solution came from Peter Brown, the founder and CEO of Browns 2000: he suggested double-siding the door so both back and front were faced with Senoplast acrylic. And it worked. Then, to cap it all, the company took the plunge and invested in one of the first laser edgebanding lines to be commissioned

door design 38 • kitchen & bathroom journal october 2018

The Glacier range includes 13 solid high gloss colours

in the UK. When the first key customers were introduced to the result, so good was the finish they thought it was solid acrylic. “They saw straight away that it would be great for wardrobes because there was no movement, and they could drill either side.” Being doublesided, kitchen retailers also latched onto the benefit that, when running a plinth and an end panel to the floor, if the panel is made to the same finish as the fascias with a high gloss front and back, there isn’t an element of backing material on show to spoil the finish.” The current Glacier range includes 13 solid high gloss colours finished with Senoplast acrylic and eight supermatt finishes that use Hornschuch PVC. “We get the best supermatt finish using the Hornschuch material,” says Graeme, “And it allows us to price competitively. We deal with installers who fit £50-60k kitchens and we also deal

with those who fit kitchens up to £10k, so the product has to be versatile and work for all. “We produce a lot of concave and convex doors, as well as angled doors, using both the high gloss and the supermatt finish. Curved doors are only available in fixed widths but any height you want can be made in Glacier. That’s very useful for anyone fitting bedrooms that have especially low or high ceilings.” The beginning of 2018 saw the introduction of a third door range, a 2d product based on seven Egger MFC colours, and this is steadily making ground in the market, but what’s perhaps less well known is the investment Browns 2000 has made in its own glass division. With CNC cutting machinery from CMS, Bottero edge polishing machinery, a toughening system from Mappi and a Cefla robotic sprayline, there really isn’t much the company can’t offer. “We glaze the

made to measure doors and we do a lot of cut to size glass and mirrors,” explains Graeme. “We’ve started producing made to measure splashbacks that we polish all round, toughen and back-spray in-house. With the Cefla, we can match any colour from a RAL chart.” There’s little doubt in Graeme’s mind that the key to the success of Glacier lies in the use of the best products available and continual investment in state of the art production machinery. “We like control,” he admits candidly. “We manufacture in house and we’re not frightened of investing in the very latest equipment if it gives us a quality advantage. We’re also investing in a trade showroom that will be opened in the first quarter of next year so customers will be able to call the sales team and bring their customers in to see all our kitchens and bedrooms on permanent display.”

BA LAUNCHES The new Jayline is more than just a new J-Pull handle-less fascia, it’s a product born of huge investment in dedicated state-of-the-art production that will give you a talking point with your customers and peace of mind…

O

ver the last few years, the KBB sector has seen strong growth of a trend towards sleek, minimalist design and nowhere has this been more apparent than in door design. With handleless designs, the look and the feel are important – but, at the same time, consumers have become much more savvy about quality. They want a product that not only feels and looks good, they want a product that keeps its original good looks. With the launch of its brand new Jayline, a stunning collection of J-pull, handle-less doors with sleek, minimalist appearance, BA Components has added a real classic to its door offer that fits perfectly with the developing trend – and the really good

news is that BA Components has invested heavily in a dedicated machinery line at its Doncaster factory to control the quality and ensure you and your customer get a supremely reliable product. The core of the Jayline collection is 19mm MDF. What makes this product unique, however, is not that it’s a J-pull handle-less design; rather that it’s a fully wrapped door with the surface décor pulled down from the top of the door, deep into the J-shape without any join, seamlessly down the frontal and over the bottom edge of the door. BA Components has gone for the very best quality by using PUR adhesive that provides the highest heat and moisture resistance currently available. Even where the edges

JAYLINE

join the back face of the door, the use of PUR prevents any ingress of moisture, making it suitable for base and even wall cupboard applications above a cooker, near a hob or sink, or where the doors might be subjected to steam. And the join is guaranteed to be practically invisible for years. Allied to the Jayline collection, which will be available in all popular sizes from heights of 110mm to 1245mm and widths from 278mm to 996mm, is a range of accessories that includes plinths, internal and external corner posts, multi-purpose rails and both square end panels and J-Profile end panels. Jayline, which forms part of the ‘Super 8’ of BA Brands, was launched in September 2018

with a high gloss white door. Other gloss and matt colours will follow in January 2019. “At BA, we launch to reflect market trends by listening to our network of retailers,” David Caulfield, BA’s Sales and Marketing Director told Kitchen & Bathroom Journal. “We’re excited to introduce this new door into BA’s portfolio, as it marks further development and a fresh take on our handle-less offer. This new door looks stunning in high gloss white and is set to be a real winner in the BA range.” Nick Corlett, BA’s Chief Executive Officer, adds, “We want to excite and enthuse the KBB market whilst retaining a focus on what’s important; our products, BA’s quality service and our network of retailers. We will be

expanding our most successful product lines and introducing a range of new products and accessories into 2019 that will offer even greater choice and options for our resellers.” Ask about BA’s ‘Super 8’ brands, finishes and colours and find out how easy it is to create a stunning kitchen or bedroom that’s synonymous with great design and true innovation. #LeadingTheLine #BetterAlways

Duka has launched its libero 3000, a free-standing unit with a geometric silkscreen print on glass, reminiscent of the wrought-ironwork typical of industrial architecture. The effect is incredibly realistic, with an audacity which brings character to the ambience and positions the shower firmly on centre stage, the undisputed star of the bathroom. Designed in 6 mm or 8 mm glass and a standard height of 2000 mm, it is available in six or eight-square panelling. The glass panel support bar is mounted to the side profile, which closes the grid effect in one smooth, continuous whole, giving a clear-cut, clean result. www.duka.it

THE INDUSTRIAL

REVOLUTION Bathroom manufacturers take on the utilitarian uprising…

I

ron, wood, exposed brickwork, pipes and grunge details have never felt more at home in the bathroom. The desire to replicate industrial architecture over the last few years has proven to be the generator of irreproachable philosophies in style and has been met with increasing demand. Designers have challenged the perceptions of industrial living and as a result, have skilfully blended contemporary elements with classic details to create unique spaces with a strong sense of character that is equally as effective in the living room, kitchen and bedroom as it is the

bathroom. But, where has the desire to create an urban living concept come from and is this trend set to stay? “To answer this, you have to remember how it all started,” explains Gloria Riva, marketing manager at Duka. “Industrial styling is not the invention of something new but rather the preservation and enhancement of something that was already there, although not directly destined for the domestic environment. Space in towns and cities is limited. This means we’re looking at ways to restore old buildings and transform them into

Gloria Riva

a contemporary space that is suitable for 21st century living. This has inevitably influenced the work of architects, often called upon to restructure disused industrial environments and turn them into residential spaces. As a result, the demand for the KBB industry to replicate industrial styling has heightened in order to balance beauty and functionality in the home. Regardless of the trend in question, that notion will never go out of fashion.” So how are manufacturers interpreting the trend for industrial design? We take a closer look at the latest products that reflect this trend…

bathroom furniture & sanitaryware kitchen & bathroom journal october 2018 • 45 “Mass appeal has meant that everything from lighting and furniture to decorative finishes is benefiting from a utilitarian look. In turn, this has made it easy to adopt the aesthetic in every room of the house. In my opinion, the popularity of the industrial style comes down to several factors. The look has become familiar and inviting, particularly when compared with the stark, stripped-back interiors that dominated the early 2000s. The industrial style also allows us to connect to the past, lending our homes a sense of history. A table crafted from reclaimed wooden flooring, for example, makes for a better story than one that has rolled off the factory line along with thousands of carbon copies. In an age when consumers value individuality, pieces made from woods with natural imperfections or metals that have aged over time allow homes to their own style and identity.” Vittorio Naldi, branch manager at Scavolini UK

Laufen’s freestanding Ino bathtub, designed by Toan Nguyen, located in the Andaz London guest suites

LONDON CALLING Laufen collaborates with Conran and partners to refurbish bathrooms at Andaz London Liverpool Street Hotel…

Tina Norden, Director at Conran & Partners

S

wiss bathroom manufacturer, Laufen has collaborated with Conran and Partners on a recently completed project to equip the bathrooms of 267 sophisticated guest rooms and suites at the Andaz London Liverpool Street. Previously known as the ‘Great Eastern Hotel’, the project – commissioned by Andaz owners Hyatt – was part of a wider brief to update and refresh the rooms, bringing them in line with the Andaz DNA and the cultural changes in the local area, which is located on the edge of the City and London’s Shoreditch. The stylish bathrooms preserve the clean, timeless metro tiles from the original design and are complemented by a number of new, modern solutions. All the bathrooms feature the award-winning wall-hung Kartell by Laufen washbasins, which add a contemporary, minimalist style to the bathroom design. Known for its extremely thin but robust edges, the elegant design echoes the clean forms and expressive minimalism that are the key traits of the

collection. The basins are complemented by black Dornbracht brassware. The sleek design is further enchased by the introduction of Laufen’s freestanding Ino bathtubs. Designed by the French designer Toan Nguyen, the oval baths feature throughout the hotel and, thanks to its Sentec mineral composite material, offers a sleek anti-bacterial, easy-to-clean, resistant to chemicals and UV-resistant solution. To complement the monochrome colour scheme of the bathroom, Laufen was able to add a bespoke element to the project with a customised black finish to the waste for the bathtub, to match the black brassware. Jon Bond, Specification Manager for Laufen comments: “We worked closely with the Conran and Partners team to ensure that our products were the perfect solution for the bathrooms in this exciting refurbishment. Laufen has a long heritage of working with global designers on some of the world’s most prestigious hospitality projects and we were delighted to be able to utilise our expertise at the Andaz London Liverpool Street.”

Wall-hung Kartell by Laufen washbasins, designed by Ludovica and Roberto Palomba The Andaz London Liverpool Street Hotel

One of 267 sophisticated guest rooms and suites refurbished by Laufen

With a distinct style and urban design aesthetic to the overall hotel refurbishment project, Conran and Partners have injected a number of new elements commissioned from local East London artists. The bathrooms feature distinctive ‘Kraken’ splashbacks, based on designs by local illustration artist Sophie Mo. These elements help reinforce the

hotel’s historic relationship with its locality and reinforce the Andaz’s distinctive personality and local connections. Tina Norden, Director, Conran and Partners, says: “It’s been great collaborating with Laufen on this project to update the bathrooms to an exceptionally high quality in every guest room. In addition, artist Sophie Mo’s splashback

designs have been added to help to bring the streets of Shoreditch playfully into the bathrooms, offering a strong visual connection between the internal settings of the hotel and the streetscapes of the surrounding area. Our overall design approach has aspired to use subtle local touches like this rather than obvious theming to create an authentic ‘sense of place’ throughout.”

The Stand bathtub – which measures 160 x 70 x h 51cm - is made from innovative Living Tec® material. It includes a swivel siphon

URBAN DESIGN Ex.t’s latest bathroom collection, the Stand, channels the trend for coloured metals in the bathroom…

E

x.t is an Italian bathroom furniture brand with an extraordinary talent for creating handcrafted designs that infuse both the international vision of its designers and innovative manufacturing techniques and materials available today. Responding to the trend of urban living, it’s Stand collection has been inspired by the home design world. Created by Kasper Ronn and Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen – owners of Norm Architects – each piece is encapsulated in a metal structure and is made from Living tec®, a matt varnished metal.

With a background in commercial and industrial design, Ronn and Bjerre-Poulsen’s aim was to create a bathroom collection that was durable and timeless, whilst giving a nod of acceptance to the style and elegance of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco eras. To give a sense of lightness to the entire collection, each piece can be sold with or without the fame and can come in black, white or gold. The basin also comes in round or oval.

STEPPING INTO A TROJAN BATH A

fter a long day at work, your bathroom is often seen as a sanctuary to relax and unwind. But, while you’re submerging yourself into an oasis of bubbles and washing away the day’s stresses, have you ever thought about what goes into creating a bath? For many, the thought will never cross your mind - as long as your bath continues

to look good and remain water tight – but for Trojan’s David Mosley, the quest to create the perfect bath has been a life-long, family pursuit. Following in his father’s footsteps, he’s continuing to push the boundaries of design and imposes rigorous manufacturing processes to maintain Trojan’s exceptionally high standards.

Trojan’s new solid surface bath range, Ramsden & Mosley, is no exception to this rule. But, we all know that seeing is believing. That’s why you’re invited to explore Trojan’s unique production process and see what really goes into creating a premium bath with K&B Journal’s step by step guide…

sanitaryware kitchen & bathroom journal october 2018 • 55

5

Step 1: Preparation. Trojan has a dedicated Ramsden & Mosley production team to hand make every bath in the collection. The process begins with creating two elements - the male and female tools – which come together to create the mould and shape of the bath. Each tool weighs over 100kg. Step 2: Filling the moulds. Once merged and clamped together, a bespoke Respecta machine pours the acrylic resin and powder mix inbetween two moulds. The investment in such a specialist machine is critical for the consistency of the material and ensures that no excess air is trapped in the liquid acrylic resin mix. Step 3: Curing. Once the exact amount of resin is deposited, both the entry and exit tubes are capped. The bath is then allowed to cure for 45minutes. The curing process plays an important role in strengthening the bath and helps with the durability of the end product. The curing process takes place immediately and involves maintaining consistent conditions to prevent a runaway cure that would result in either a ruined or sub-standard bath.

6

Step 4: Inspection. Once fully cured, the bath is released from the male and female tools and inspected. The temperature is also taken and recorded for quality control purposes. The mould is then returned to the cleaning station and prepared for the next casting. Step 5: Post Curing. Prior to post curing in an oven, any excess material is removed using a saw. Whilst this step of the production process may seem small, an inaccurate cute could ruin a perfect bath. Therefore, training for such a delicate operation is crucial. Once the excess edges have been removed, the new bath casting is placed into an oven for one hour to postcure (and stabilise) the acrylic resin.

7

Step 6: Polishing. When the cured bath is removed from the oven, each bath is hand polished with varying grades of sanding and emery papers. This allows the Ramsden & Mosley team to remove any minor imperfections from the bath and create the desired premium finish. It can take up to four hours to complete a bath that is in-line with Trojan’s standards. The end result is a perfectly smooth bath that looks and feels wonderful.

8

9

Step 7: Finishing Touches. After hours of polishing, all baths are inspected by an employee who has not worked on the bath. The click clack bath waste is fitted to the drilled waste hole and the Ramsden & Mosley logo label is added. Step 8: Packaging. The premium packaging reflects the craftsmanship that goes into each bath. Blue foam trims are attached to the edges and the bath is wrapped in a plastic sheet before being placed into a nylon bag. The bag has four handles to allow the end user to lift the bath in situ easily. Finally, the bath – inside it’s bag – is slipped into the outer box. The box has been made exclusively for the range and features a solid lid to ensure complete protection throughout the distribution process. Step 9: Handling & Shipping. Once in its box, each bath is moved into our warehouse, ready to be shipped. While baths of this kind are available, they are very often made in the Far East resulting in long lead times. By investing in UK-based manufacturing facilities and Trojan can often deliver its range of solid surface baths to its distributors on their next delivery or arrange to deliver the baths direct to the showrooms on their behalf.
