A White Macaubas Quartzite surface from TNC Granite was integrated into the kitchen design
BESPOKE DREAMS Holloways of Ludlow takes us through the design and installation of a bespoke kitchen created by them in North London…
A
fter talking to Holloways of Ludlow about their ideal kitchen, the customer’s design brief was clear and concise. They wanted a central open-plan kitchen and family room that mixed classic, contemporary and luxury styling with state-ofthe-art functionality. The space also needed to reflect the rich tones, luxurious colours and fabrics that were featured in the rest of the house. Taking creative direction from his client’s brief, the initial kitchen design was created by
Robert Burnett, Head of Design at Holloways of Ludlow. “The property was situated in a carefully protected conservation area in North London which had a ban on extensions and external alternations,” begins Robert. “In order to achieve the open-plan space the client wanted, we removed walls, a staircase and a utility room, as well as levelling floors and ceilings to provide the illusion that the space had always been an open-plan kitchen and living area.”
case study kitchen & bathroom journal december 2017 • 5 A bulkhead was created to home a flush-fitting extractor above the island unit Below left: Gagganau appliances were installed throughout the kitchen, including the RB491 200 400 Series fridge freezer Below: Cabinets are painted in London Stone Estate Eggshell from Farrow & Ball
The client wanted a feature worktop on the island which looked like marble but could offer more durability. “Working alongside Interior Designer, Lauraine Shaw, we found some beautiful scants of White Macaubas from natural stone suppliers in Verona. We used a light coloured Quartzite with prominent veining, which closely resembles the look and feel of marble. To add to the allure, the dark stained oak, which features throughout the cabinet interiors, provided an element of luxury and an elegant contrast against the cabinet doors.”
Great thought was also given to the appliances used in the design, with Gagganau products being installed thanks to their unique combination of design and function. When it came to the extractor fan, Robert was keen to install a flush-fitting design so it wouldn’t compete for attention with the elegant silk drum shade with chandelier that hung above the island. Robert adds, “Usually this type of extractor requires the whole ceiling to be dropped to accommodate the appliance and ducting but since the space already had lower
ceiling, we didn’t want to lose any more height. With this in mind, we installed a bulkhead which was the same shape as the island to provide space for a flush extractor. Spotlights were also integrated into the dropped bulkhead for a sleek finish.” “To create the timeless look our clients were keen to encompass, we incorporated classic Shaker style panelled door. However, the spray finish, lay-on installation - as opposed to the more traditional in-frame application usually associated with shaker

doors - and handleless opening system, provided a contemporary twist to this design. This was further enhanced by the flat drawer fronts on the island and London Stone Estate eggshell painted cabinets.” The entire kitchen was bespoke and handmade by cabinetmakers at Holloways of Ludlow’s workshop. Robert says, “Due to the shape of room we designed and built a tall wall of cabinets between the formal dining space and the kitchen to create a symmetrical focal point for the entire space. By squaring up the main kitchen space, we also gained logical positions for island, the sink run and a spacious soft seating area at the end of the room.” To complete the look, the range of finishes and materials were chosen to create a living room feel, allowing the kitchen and seating area to flow. Robert adds, “We followed the brief to the letter and by working with our clients, were able to create a beautifully bespoke space that is now a central hub that everyone in the family can enjoy.”

MARKET INSIGHT K&BJ talks to Dave Mayer, Sales and Marketing Director of Reginox about the specialist tap market going forward… How are sales for specialist taps performing? “Speaking from a Reginox point of view, hot tap sales have grown consistently over the past few years and have more than doubled during the past two years. Boiling hot and 3 in 1 taps currently account for c. 20% of Reginox’s total tap sales and this is increasing monthly.”
How is the market for specialist taps changing and why? “A number of factors are driving increased demand for hot taps, including wider availability, lower prices, and a greater number of showrooms displaying working models. Clever marketing of hot taps is also playing a key role – they are constantly being positioned as a ‘must have’ item within the kitchen, with the result that homeowners
are actively requesting them. Home improvement TV programmes have also played a role in ‘inadvertently’ marketing them to consumers and giving them an aspirational feel. “Hot taps undoubtedly do offer a number of benefits, such as space, energy and time saving. A decent 3 in 1 tap can actually replace the need for a kettle within the kitchen, saving both energy and space, plus it will usually filter out impurities, which is a big attraction. At the high end of the market, brand remains the key differentiating factor. In the mid-market it is all down to design, style and quality of components, materials and boiler performance.”
What are your predictions for the market going forward? “Hot taps have now most certainly moved into the mainstream market and are no longer considered a luxury item which is only found in the highend kitchen. As a greater number of cheaper imports continue to arrive on the market, they will become even more accessible. 3 in 1 taps, offering boiling, ordinary hot and ordinary cold will eventually overtake those offering just boiling water, particularly as designs develop and more aesthetically pleasing models become available. “We may also see more ‘gimmicks’ starting to appear, such as infra-red operation. Most of the top-end products currently available are wholly contemporary; it would be good to also see some more classical styles appearing that would suit the more traditional Shaker style kitchen.”
specialist taps 12 • kitchen & bathroom journal december 2017 The Minerva Electronic 4-in-1 is Franke’s first digitally controlled tap.

GOING DIGITAL Franke launches its very first digitally controlled 4-in-1 tap…
F
ranke has launched the Minerva Electronic 4-in-1 tap, the company’s first digitally controlled tap with push-button functionality. The futuristic tap has been designed to enhance convenience and user-friendliness with pre-set 30 and 60 second programmes that dispense two litres of water - ideal for filling pans, teapots, cafetières and jugs with instant filtered boiling or filtered cold water. Designed to offer fast and intuitive access to the four water options, a separate electronic dial dispenses the instant filtered 100°C filtered boiling and filtered cold water, while standard mains hot and cold are operated by a single lever. Pressing in the electronic dial wakes the tap from its safety standby mode when the dial glows white. For 100°C boiling water,
selecting the red light and pressing the dial in twice will automatically dispense 60 seconds worth of water, enough to fill a pan. Select blue for cold filtered water and a double press of the dial will dispense water for 30 seconds. The flow of water in each case can also be controlled manually by turning and holding the dial to give more or less water than the pre-set options. The user can select which mode best suits the task in hand. Available in a chrome finish, the tap is suitable for low pressure systems and has a slim five litre water tank that fits behind the plinth saving valuable cupboard space. It can also be fitted in as little as 20 minutes, thanks to Franke’s MBox system which integrates five single parts into one compact box. Retailers can benefit from an extensive POS package including displays and merchandise.

DESIGN DIVERSITY 2017 sees Marpatt’s largest kitchen door portfolio to date…

L
eicester-based door manufacturer, Marpatt, has been at the forefront of kitchen design since the 1970s. Today, the name is synonymous with quality, innovative manufacturing techniques and design flexibility and, as the company embarks on its most extensive collection of door designs to date, Marpatt continues to lead in the design stakes. The family-run business has invested considerably in its in-house finishing department and workshop in recent times, which has been a distinct advantage to the long-standing manufacturer. The introduction of automated spraying and preparation machinery has resulted in a turnaround time of just three weeks for hand-finished matt painted and wood painted surfaces and just four weeks for high gloss.
Renowned for its special finishes, a colour matching service is also available to customers, allowing them to choose the exact colour required from colour charts and RAL numbers. It’s also able to match specific items provided by the customer to get an exact colour match, creating a completely unique kitchen that meets the meticulous requirements of the customer. A further 23 standard swatch colours are also available. Marpatt’s vast profile includes the Infinite Collection – which incorporates classic and contemporary, Edwardian and bespoke inframe ranges – and the Foundation, which offers a selection of competitively priced doors that are batch painted to popular Egger board colours. Both ranges are available with an extensive range of accessories to provide the perfect finish for your customer’s kitchen.

“The general interiors trend for mixing and matching materials continues to fuel strong consumer demand for matt door finishes in the kitchen. This popularity is often associated with a contemporary kitchen, however it can be successfully achieved in a painted option, adding tactile interest and offering a point of differentiation for the consumer. The vast majority of our doors from stock are painted and we find both customers and consumers preferring this to vinyl wrapped product. The fact we have an in-house spray facility allows us 4to offer customers bespoke painted colours which is an area of continual growth for us.” Neil Taggart, Marketing Manager at TKC

We will also see an increased interest into more bold, dominant colours.” Sinead Trainor, Kitchen Category Manager, Faith Furniture Company

MARKET INSIGHT K&BJ talks to Simon Bodsworth, Managing Director at Daval about the continual growth of the painted kitchen market and his predictions for 2018… How is the market for painted kitchens adapting to current market trends and fairing against the contemporary kitchen? “Value engineering is where we are seeing the most market growth, with a hand finished quality over mass production driving progression. Time-honoured techniques, hand spraying over engineering, bespoke colours and finishing continue to elevate the kitchen as new paint innovations hit the UK market and provide even more design advantage to the end user. British architecture is known for an eclectic combination of styles, fostering a unique and classic look that is spot-on for warm materials and painted finishes. Our customers are moving away from the chunkier profiles akin to painted kitchen design and instead, looking to slim, thinner contouring that is allowing shaker style doors and slab drawer combinations to dominate modern painted kitchen design.”
What product innovations will the painted kitchen market see in 2018? “Due to a direct result of technological advancement in material, the market is seeing vinyl wraps, foils and lacquers now being manufactured to replicate the look and feel of authentic natural materials. As well as being
economically priced, adding colour through lamination can also be a more durable and adaptable solution for kitchen furniture. “Some of our kitchens are designed with the option of being finished in paint grade foil: a painted wood effect. This unique laminate door has significant design advantages when compared to a painted veneer cabinet, delivering a greater consistency of colour thanks to its impregnable laminate surface texture and scratch resistant properties. Able to take on unique colour like blue, this type of door makes it possible for the latest colour trends to filter down in to the painted kitchen.”
How will you remain competitive in the market going forward? “As a British manufacturer, we carefully consider both material and technology, which is why all our furniture is built from sustainable materials and precision engineered in the UK. By having this level of control over production, we are able to facilitate novel manufacturing techniques that are completely new to the market, drive the market and are exclusive to us and our retailers. By incorporating the latest manufacturing techniques and quality raw materials, we can introduce painted kitchen concepts as a highly personalised, cutting-edge, durable proposition: ideal for the modern family. “We have invested big to ensure we continue to stay one step ahead of the competition and continue to progress throughout 2018 onwards. For instance, we have just invested a remarkable £900k to enable and boost our future business growth. In response, LEP, Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership, has afforded Daval an impressive £88,920 grant to support its dynamic and astute business drive. This investment has amplified our manufacturing facilities and doubled capacity, meaning we can now take advantage of taking the ‘first-to-market’ approach and anticipate and react to changing markets.”
Special painted finishes are our speciality. At Marpatt we have built up a reputation as one of the leading suppliers in special painted finishes across our range of kitchen doors and accessories. These painted finishes are available on a wide variety of door styles. From the impressive array of lay-on and in-frame doors in our Infinite collection to the popular designs of the Foundation range, the choice is truly endless. OPEN FOR BUSINESS Italian kitchen manufacturer, Binova, has opened its first UK showroom on London’s renowned Finchley Road…
L
ocated on one of the most famous streets in the KBB world, Finchley Road, Binova opened the doors of its very first UK showroom earlier this month. Established in Italy in 1958, the kitchen manufacturer has spent over 50 years researching and designing kitchens and, as a result, has collaborated with renowned architects and designers to ensure it remains at the forefront of kitchen design. And now, with a dedicated showroom in the UK, Binova’s inspiring designs can be experienced first hand. Its signature look – which focuses around a clean and elegant modular configuration, which sees units laid against walls or
arranged as an island – is displayed in its showroom. Designed to be a central hub for architects and interior designers to experience the use of unique materials and design concepts, the showroom features a wide range of designs from the company’s latest collections, reflecting the company’s ongoing quest to balance spatial continuity and Italian elegance. Displays include the minimalist Vesta kitchen and the architecturally carved Scava, as well as the Pancotti, Italamp and Made Amano/MadeA ranges. Keen to see the designs for yourself? The showroom is open Monday – Saturday 9.30am – 6pm.

The new Schüller utility concept has everything needed to create organised spaces for today’s homeowners
A FAMILY AFFAIR Creating clever kitchen solutions for modern day living, Schüller continues to innovate and inspire…
W
ith one of the most advanced factories in Europe, German kitchen manufacturer Schüller has the capability to mass produce any design in an instant, yet they don’t. Of course, as a leader in European design, they could attach the highest prices to awardwinning ranges, but this will never happen. And yet, Schüller are one of the largest kitchen manufacturers in Europe, exporting all over the world. So what makes Schüller different? The answer is family. With over 52 years in the industry, they remain a family run business and the belief that the kitchen is the heart of every home is the key to success. When Schüller develop a new collection, they always have the same goal, and that is simply to make life easier and more enjoyable. Schüller don’t just look at how we use a kitchen, but everything that affects our lives. They consider global trends, local influence,
what’s important to us, our interests, aspirations, tastes and values. The way we live is changing, with urban apartments, family homes, residential units and multigenerational living all redefining market trends and consumer desire. The 2018 schüller.C collection features ingenious new planning options, colours and distinctive finishes, all creating an extraordinary level of planning flexibility for the UK retailer. Designed to optimise work flow and reflect our individuality, this year’s innovations include the utility room concept. Raised appliances with a pull-out shelf for the laundry basket, storage space for cleaning equipment and creative solutions that ensure a well-functioning home, all without compromising the aesthetics of German design. By understanding modern life and placing an emphasis on how we use our homes, Schüller retailers can create kitchens that are the very heart of every home.

The Vauth-Sagel Cornerstone Maxx offers toolless assembly and simple height adjustment for quick and easy fitting. Available in chrome and white (left), the Cornerstone maxx will be available in a Lava Grey finish (inset) and with a Planero basket design early next year
CORNERING THE MARKET Vauth-Sagel maxes out kitchen storage with its clever Cornerstone design…
T
he Vauth-Sagel Cornerstone Maxx quite literally turns the corner in cabinet storage design, providing a solution that allows full access to the cabinet contents without obstructing any adjacent cabinets. Exclusively available through Häfele UK, the clever Cornerstone Maxx transforms previously awkward corner-space into a key storage asset. With shelves that are designed to extend from the cabinet in a straight line, the design provides maximum convenience without compromising access to neighbouring units.
The new solution, which is available for cabinet widths of 800, 900 and 1000mm and features toolless assembly, has also been designed to make use of kitchen height. Floor to ceiling larders and cabinets feature silent and soft-close damping while the lava-grey frames and connections exemplify the attention to detail that sets the range apart. Dramatic powder-coated steel gives the Planero cabinet system immediate visual appeal, whilst clever design enables shelves to be easily removed for cleaning, taking storage innovation to the next level.

SICAM REVIEW Sicam is becoming more influential with each year that passes and its winning formula is one its founder, Carlo Giobbi, is very proud of…
I
n an age where change and fashion have become so much a part of everyday life, sometimes it’s good to know there’s an anchor point providing stability in the annual calendar. Although it’s only been running for nine years, the annual Sicam exhibition is that anchor point in the furniture components and accessories calendar. It’s a compact show – an easy show to navigate – and the winning format is one its founder, Carlo Giobbi, sees little point in changing just because “it’s the fashion to change things”. I don’t think an exhibition must change every year. Many fairs introduce new things all the time, and we have certainly made some changes over the years - like more parking zones and different catering arrangements to make space inside the halls - but the most important thing is that an exhibition must be a meeting point between visitors and exhibitors. It must provide this service and do it well. Companies from all over the world come to Pordenone. We have a very good quality of exhibitors and visitors and we make it easy for them to find what they want here. We don’t have closed booths, everything is open and accessible. The exhibitors are very happy – 90% had already rebooked for next year by the start of the fair – and the exhibition is very successful. On the first day of the show alone we welcomed visitors from more than 90 countries.” The facts speak for themselves: over the four days of the exhibition, visitors from almost 8,000 different enterprises travelled from more
than 100 different countries to see the 583 exhibiting companies who, together, occupied over 15,000 square metres of stand space. Over 28% of the companies exhibiting at the trade fair were from outside Italy. So, what do visitors gain from visiting Sicam? Every other year we see the very latest ideas presented at that giant of European furniture component and accessories exhibitions, Interzum, but it’s often at Sicam where we learn which have found favour with furniture manufacturers and made it beyond prototyping and into production. That’s not always the case, however. More and more, Sicam is being used as an international launch pad in its own right. This year, for example, there was plenty to see from hardware components manufacturers, who showcased some brilliantly engineered and very stylish new products. You’ll find some of the best in the pages that follow from companies like Salice, Vauth-Sagel, Grass, Hawa and Ninka. Compact Sicam may be but it’s not without influence, and if you thought it was an Italian show for the Italian market, nothing could be further from the truth. Several visitors from some of Britain’s most influential northern and Irish manufacturing companies were in attendance this year, along with others from well-known giants of European furniture production, and they were definitely not there just for the Prosecco. If you haven’t yet added the dates to your 2018 calendar, I’d strongly recommend a visit. Sicam 2018 will be held from 16th until 19th October.

1. Ideal for installation behind modern handle-less doors, the new VS COR Fold from Vauth-Sagel is a push-to-open system that makes the most of hidden corner space, while VS COR Flex is Vauth-Sagel’s classic flexible design with the new tray-style Planero ‘two dimensional’ shelves instead of baskets. The Qanto® corner cabinet from Ninka provides three vertically rising trays on a linear-driven lifting mechanism, the top one being on a level with the worksurface when the others are hidden. Operation is electric but if anything overhangs the edge, or obstructs the movement of the unit Qanto® stops moving immediately. The crystal glass effect of the tray rim conveys a quality look to the product, harmonising easily with modern worksurfaces and fascia styles. It’s also supplied pre-assembled for easy fitting. 01788 542 020 • www.hafele.co.uk 3. Grass showcased its Tavinea Sorto at Sicam. The pre-mounted, powder coated frame system features anti-slip material on the bottom that fits perfectly into the drawer, keeps everything in its place but provides plenty of flexibility to accommodate changing storage needs. Also shown was Tavineo Optima, a retro-fittable dividing system for pot drawers with the same square section as Vionaro and stepless movement of dividers. Installation is tool-free. 01788 542 020 • www.hafele.co.uk 4. Engineered with all the precision of a Swiss watch, Hawa’s Concepta sliding system has been modified with new larger rollers on the double version to provide an even smoother opening and sliding action. With ServoSoft opening, simply open the door 90 degrees, leave it and it parks itself. The new version will be available early 2018 and will also be offered in black anodised aluminium. 01788 542 020 • www.hafele.co.uk 5. Have you seen the light? Wave a foot under the sensor on Hailo’s hands-free opening drawer and even with full hands you can open and close it. The system requires one slot to be routed into the base of the cabinet to accommodate the mechanism for any drawer size from 300mm wide up to 1200mm. Hailo also has an app that enables the power of the retraction to be adjusted to suit different weights and the intensity of the light to be toned down or increased. 01788 542 020 • www.hafele.co.uk 6. “Blue is a perfect shade for the kitchen and one we expect to see grow in popularity in 2018 thanks to its perfect partnership with grey and white surfaces. It’s deemed to be the colour of the moment after a review of international architecture, fashion and design trends and it’s easy to see the appeal. Blue speaks of sky and sea; a feeling of being free and this can easily translate to your kitchen colours, too. Whether you go for all-out blue on the furniture or stick to accent pieces with curtains, cushions and kitchen textiles, there are so many surfaces that will suit this shade.” Jonathan Stanley VP of Marketing, Caesarstone UK 08001588 088 • www.caesarstone.co.uk Caesarstone 5031 Statuario Maximus 1. “Just when you thought kitchens would stay neutral for good, colour is making a comeback with 2018 set to be bold and beautiful. While the trend for grey lives on this year’s must have colours provide the perfect accent, giving the space a sense of character and drawing the eye to a particular feature. Any colour from pink to green to blue will be seen in the kitchen in 2018, combining with grey, white and natural finishes for an individual look. There is also a move towards tactile, structured finishes and mixing and matching of colour tones with natural wood grain.” Steve Tough, Commercial Director, Masterclass Kitchens 01443 449 449 • www.masterclasskitchens.co.uk

This year the colour spectrum for kitchen taps has widened dramatically with introductions of more colour. Graphite, rose gold and black are just some of the colours you can expect to see in 2018.” Helen Clark, Marketing Manager, Abode 01226 283 434 • www.abodedesigns.co.uk 4. “The availability of coloured stainless steel has caused a real buzz, both in the sinks industry and amongst homeowners. OPEN PLAN LIVING 1. “Open plan design will continue to be the dominant trend for contemporary living, driven by consumers appreciating the benefits of a multi-purpose space for cooking, dining, living and entertaining. This is increasingly informing design development so that products work in harmony not just in a visually streamlined way, but also in delivering optimum functionality. This means sinks with accessories that can multi-task while being streamlined, hobs that sit flush to the worksurface with digital touch controls, integrated extraction creating clear sight lines, near-silent appliances and taps that support the workflow and user’s lifestyle, all of which add up to a total pleasure of form and function for the user. Jeanette Ward, Communications Manager, Franke 0161 436 6280 • www.franke.co.uk 2. “A modern appliance’s design is sleek and streamlined: knobs and controls have been removed and replaced by touchscreens, often with the addition of a central dial that retracts to leave the appliance looking flush to the surface and withdraw when not in use. Discreet, built-in appliance design and banks of appliances play to open-plan layouts, merging the kitchen seamlessly into the dining and living areas.” Rhys Evans, Sales Director UK & Ireland, V-ZUG UK 0843 289 5759 • www.vzug.com 3. “Open-plan living is growing in popularity thanks to its ability to make a small area seem larger and enhance the feel of ‘flow’ within your home. Removing walls also increases natural light, removes dark corners and reduces dead space. Installing a statement bath in your bedroom will maximise space in each room, while retaining privacy. It also introduces a striking, yet practical, design element.” Anthony Smith, Director, Waters Baths of Ashbourne 01332 824 166 • www.watersbaths.co.uk

KBB trends 2018 32 • kitchen & bathroom journal december 2017 “There has been something of a shift towards surfaces with thinner profiles. This was particularly evident at the European design shows at the beginning of the year and we can expect more of this going forward as consumers seek to create a minimal, streamlined look in their kitchen.” Simon Boocock, Managing Director, CRL Stone 01706 863 600 • www.crlstone.co.uk

THINSPIRATION FOR 2018 1. “Matt surfaces have become an established trend in the kitchen but they have largely been restricted to door frontals because of reservations about their practical performance on a horizontal worksurface. With advances in materials technology, such as our Fenix NTM° ultramatt product, that barrier has now been overcome. The specific nanotechnology behind this product ensures that it is anti-fingerprint, scratch resistant, ultra-hygienic and has thermal healing properties that will maintain its luxurious and tactile appeal in real time kitchen use. It’s the new ‘smart’ material for worksurfaces and the one to watch for 2018.” Sabine Mané, Marketing Manager at IDS 08457 298 298 • www.idsurfaces.co.uk 2. “We’ll see sanitaryware manufacturers continue to innovate with new materials, shapes and textures, with geometric and simple shapes leading the way. One of the main innovations that continues to gather pace at the premium end of the bathroom market, is the manufacture of ultra-thin ceramic materials, which enables bathroom brands to create new designs that push the boundaries of bathroom design. By blending a ceramic material with different substances, manufacturers can create a supreme material that goes beyond the natural qualities of clay and in the process offer endless possibilities and versatility.” Emma Mottram, Marketing Manager, Laufen 01530 510 007 • www.laufen.co.uk 3. “New production techniques and technology means that bathrooms can now tap into the fashion for sleek interiors, transferring the minimalistic trend seen throughout the rest of the household with the introduction of incredibly slim line, thin-walled ceramics. For 2018, sanitaryware will boast fine edges, crisp corners and slim, tapering profiles. Shardee Manzouri, Ideal Standard 01482 346 461 • www.ideal-standard.co.uk

The Natural Serenity concept
Annette Schumacher
CREATIVE MINDS K&B Journal talks to Annette Schumacher, Marketing Manager at Schüller, about the company’s creative influences and key trends for 2018… Our aim is to develop new collections that make life easier. To do this, we ask ourselves what interests our customers have and how this might change the way they live. We also observe different domains fashion, architecture, lifestyle and social changes such as digitalisation and urbanisation – and piece together the changing attitudes of our customers. “For 2018, we have focused on three key trends: attitude, values and style, that reflect people’s individuality and created three distinct design personalities. “Natural Serenity: We believe this type of person has an active contribution to life and the environment and feels at ease going back to basics. Sustainability is a driving force for them, with personal consumption at the heart of what they do. To emulate this into interior design, people that fit into this category are dominated by meaningful objects, personal items and fuss-free design. “Advanced Optimists: Possibilities provide excitement for an optimist. They believe that health is a priority, with exercise and nutrition playing a key role in the way they live. Striving for a clean and healthy mind but also not averse to technology as a means to help them achieve this, design is never cluttered. Instead, whether it is interior design or fashion, casual and modern designs that are integrated into their life are important. With a fresh outlook on life, bright colours are often combined with whites and greys to create the perfect environment. “Festival of culture: With culture at the heart of how this group live, they live their life by personal experience. A digital lifestyle won’t determine their life but it does help them. With a wide range of interests and a passion for travel and exploration, interior design is often filled with unique objects whilst boasting the elegance of the 50s and 60s. Timeless style with integrated technology, teamed with blacks and metals create the desired design. By focusing on these three trends, Schüller’s 2018 collection can work around you and your lifestyle, creating more space, more kitchen and more enjoyment.”

“British homes are getting smaller, with the average property standing at almost half the size of its equivalent in the 1920s.The onus is therefore on homeowners to be smarter about their furniture selection and use of space – and this is particularly important in high traffic communal areas like bathrooms and cloakrooms.” “In view of this, products which can enhance the style of the bathroom whilst also providing a spacesaving solution have become must-haves, making all the difference for homeowners. Items such as multi-functional cabinets with hidden charging points and co-ordinated lighting, or floating wall hung units opening up the floorspace are set to grow in popularity as they make the most of even the smallest of spaces. “Clever storage solutions are also a top priority for homeowners planning their compact bathroom schemes and as is often the case, some of the best ideas on the market are actually the simplest. For example, certain mirrored cabinets now come with height adjustable glass shelves and twin power sockets which allow users to charge toothbrushes and shavers, keeping them neatly out of sight. With the added advantage of steam-free mirror doors the cabinet itself serves at a stunning centrepiece for the room, providing the added illusion of even more space. “We’re also seeing a growing number of bathroom furniture ranges thoughtfully designed to specifically cater for the needs of compact bathrooms and cloakrooms. For example, our contemporary chic HiB Novum Arc collection was developed to bring big personality to smaller bathrooms, without cutting down on storage. Reduced projection into the room, a deepened basin to minimise water splashes when hand washing and distinctive recessed handles, mean this range makes all the difference in smallscale spaces.”

SIMPLIFYING THE PROCESS Armitage Shanks, has launched a new Doc M packs which make it easier for specifiers and building managers to ensure their facilities fulfil Part M of the Building Regulations and satisfy the 2010 Equality Act…

espite offering a wide range of Part M products, Armitage Shanks has developed comprehensive Doc M packs which make it quick and easy to specify what is required according to the type of facility. Itemised packs, floorplans and guidance are available online and in print for single toilet facilities, multiple toilet facilities, hotel facilities, public shower facilities and washrooms.
Tony Rheinberg, Senior Sector Marketing Manager at Armitage Shanks says, “This year sees our brand celebrate its bicentenary and as the last remaining sanitaryware manufacturer in Britain, we certainly have a lot of knowledge when it comes to meeting diverse customer needs. Our Doc M packs and our broad range of Part M products demonstrate this and offer specifiers the perfect fit, whatever their application may be. In fact, we’re so confident in the products we create that we offer a lifetime guarantee on all ceramic items and a five year guarantee on our taps, mixers, toilet seats, stainless steel and cistern fittings.” Working with industry professionals, Armitage Shanks has extended its range of Part M products which meet the stipulations of the Act, which requires that commercial and public buildings are entirely suitable for the use of disabled people. New to the Part M offering are an improved range of back-to-wall and wallhung WC pan designs, which offer a more modern and smooth-sided aesthetic. It also features an improved TMV3-approved
sequential thermostatic tap, which is easier to use, safer and better looking than its predecessor. These new products, along with the existing Part M lines available from Armitage Shanks, are supported by a new Part M brochure, which is available on IdealSpec, the Ideal Standard and Armitage Shanks online information hub and product data portal for specification and specifiers. Armitage Shanks has over two decades of experience in collating Part M products into packs and over a century of experience in the healthcare sector. Each item within the packs is approved by Local Authority Building Control, meaning specifiers do not have to worry that using any product could result in a dispute with their relevant planning authority. Each product manufactured by Armitage Shanks for Part M compliance is tested above and beyond industry standards to ensure that items can handle weight stress and offer greater general durability. These tests mean that the brand is able to offer products of the highest quality that last longer, presenting a better value purchase to a specifier.

“Many homeowners are looking to move away from the standard bath attached to the wall installation, instead creating a more open space within the bathroom to reflect the similar open plan living that many homes are now opting for. Today, consumers really take pride in putting their own personal touch on their home and are spending more on getting the look they want. This has driven the trend for personalisation and bespoke fittings within the industry.” Paul Bailey, Senior Product Manager at GROHE UK
