Ice Interiors’ Showroom in Lymington, Hampshire
FILTERING THE Matthew Parnum, Owner of Ice Interiors, talks to K&B Journal about the market for specialist taps and how his business is tackling the growing trend…
S
ince it opened its doors more than 10 years ago, bijoux kitchen studio, Ice Interiors, has seen the market for specialist taps develop into a key area of growth, with some kitchen manufacturers predicting quadruple growth in 2019. But how are retailers benefiting from the latest developments and what factors are influencing this trend? Kitchen & Bathroom Journal put these questions to Matthew Parnum, Owner of Ice Interiors. “I believe there are several factors that have contributed to the rise in the specialist tap market,” begins Matthew. “The current design trend for open-plan living and clutter-free kitchens has fallen into the hands of multifunctional tap brands. The promise of a kettle-free worktop is a huge selling point for us.” Aesthetics aside, improved performance and the latest time and cost-saving technology are often thought to be deciding factors when consumers are looking to purchase a specialist
tap. But for Hampshire-based Ice Interiors, the reality isn’t always so clear cut, with many consumers unaware of the benefits associated with the latest designs. “Even though specialist taps have been around several years, there is still a lack of understanding surrounding them,” explains Matthew. “Yes, consumer awareness has certainly increased in the last three years but it’s my job to educate them on the key features associated with these taps and how their household could benefit from installing one in their new kitchen.” Matthew continues, “I’ve found that, although customers are pleasantly surprised by the amount of money they could save in water and energy, their focus is on safety. It’s a massive concern for many but, when I take them through the different models, highlight the key safety features and let them use the taps for themselves, they become captivated by the idea.

Matthew and his team include a range of taps into their kitchen designs
MARKET “Like most new innovations to enter the market, you have to see it working to fully appreciate it. That’s why we have taps on display in our showroom,” continues Matthew. “We can talk our customers through the different features and we even make them a cup of tea with it so they can see and taste the benefits for themselves. For those that have already purchased a specialist tap in the past, they are often surprised by the quality and effectiveness of the new models on the market and go on to include one in their newly-designed kitchen. Reports from leading manufactures suggest that the retro-fit market is picking up pace in the UK. “I can see the benefits of replacing a traditional tap with a modern, multifunction tap, but the retro-fit market isn’t a big area for us,” admits Matthew. “Specialist taps still tend to be a considered purchase and people are familiar and comfortable with their kettles
Matthew Parnum, Owner of Ice Interiors
so don’t feel the need to change it until they upgrade their kitchen. With growing demand for multifunctional taps, I’m optimistic that this could change.” With an influx of specialist taps in the middle market, manufactures are continuing to create taps with four and five-in-one functions – including filtered hot, filtered cold, boiling and sparkling options - to satisfy the premium market. “They are a great tool to have in the kitchen and there is a market for them,” says Matthew. “My only concern is the servicing costs if it were to go wrong. Like with anything, the more complex the design, the trickier it can be to fix it. But, I’m a firm believer that you get what you pay for and I will always steer my customers towards reputable brands that offer a good after sales service.” Manufacturers are predicting further market growth in this area in 2019, but what does this
mean for the market going forward? Matthew adds, “Manufactures are already promoting the time and cost-saving benefits of using a specialist tap and it’s a good selling tool for retailers but I think future sales will come down to much more than this, as consumers sit up and take note of the really important issues. There has been a lot of media coverage surrounding waste and single-use plastic over the last 12 months and I think this could be a turning point for many. Reducing the amount of bottled water we buy and helping to save the environment is a key marketing message and I strongly believe this will drive future sales. In fact, we’re already experiencing more requests for filtered taps. The benefits significantly outweigh the costs. I would urge anyone that has yet to use one for themselves to pop into a local kitchen showroom and experience the difference for yourself.”

HITTING THE SPOT With safety at the forefront of its designs, HotSpot Titanium 3-in-1 boiling water taps are leading the way in secure handling and adjustable design, whilst offering impressive green credentials. Here’s a closer look at how it works…

1. Available in four or eight litre capacities, the HotSpot Titanium heater is equipped with a pure titanium water storage tank. As well as maintaining a temperature above 100˚C, the robust product is designed for low maintenance and is fully recyclable. Optimal boiling water flow can be reached with two to three bar mains water pressure connected to the system but a minimum of one bar is required.
4
2. The HotSpot Titanium Water filter is designed to ensure that only purified water enters the titanium heater. The five step filtration system incorporates double activated carbon filtration to ensure continual fresh water with no limescale build up. For extra piece of mind, the Aqua stop facility – which is built into the filter head - allows for easy replacement of the cartridge. 3. The flow meter, which is an optional extra, is directly linked to the water filter and provides the user with information about filter capacity status and advise on when the filter should be replaced. 4. The HotSpot Titanium is equipped with a unique and patented safety system, Intelliprotect®. An easy-to-operate button allows you to select from three safety levels, giving the user complete peace of mind. The design has been recognised as a Good Industrial Design (GIO) and has won the iF product design award. 5. A pan-filling function can be activated on the tap which keeps water flowing continuously. All you have to do is hold the button on the tap down for 10 seconds to active this function and push the button one more time for the water to stop flowing immediately. The function can also be adjusted on the front of the tank and is fully lit when it has been activated. 6. Boiling water remains in the tank at around five degrees above boiling point. This allows water from the HotSpot to come out at exactly 100 degrees. This results in minimal steam and a smooth flow when in use. 7. Heavily insulated, the spout on the tap will always remain cool to the touch.

The Blanco Filtra Pro tap
WATER WISDOM
Blanco fights back against single-use plastic with its range of filter taps…
*www.britishbottledwater.org/vital-statistics.asp
I
n the UK alone, we consumer 3.20 billion litres of bottled water per year*. As a nation, we drink more bottled water than fruit juice, wine or spirits and with the environmental dangers of single-use plastic grabbing media headlines following the BBC’s Blue Planet 2 series and latest government findings, it’s a stark reminder that we all need to take responsibility for the waste we create. Sink and tap specialist, Blanco, has come up with a solution to help combat the plastic epidemic. It’s range of filter taps are not only environmentally friendly but offer a cost effective solution to drinking filtered water in the home. The latest model, the Filtra Pro, processes up to 6,000 litres of filtered water
per filter, costing the consumer on average £70 per year. This means that you can enjoy one litre of filtered drinking water for just 1p. The intelligent filter has been designed to remove calcium carbonate from water, as well as other harmful toxins and chemicals, leaving you to enjoy clean and delicious water. The tap conveniently combines both standard and fresh filtered water in one tap. The fresh filtered supply is completely isolated from the regular hot and cold water and operated by a lever at the base of the tap. Suitable for use with a minimum 0.5 bar pressure, the tap is available in a polish chrome finish and comes with a five-year warranty on moving parts.

Caple’s 3-in-1 WRAS-approved, steaming water taps supply fresh cold water, regular hot water and filtered 98°C steaming water from their stainless steel spouts. The swan-necked Vapos and cubic-shaped Vapos Quad both provide 2.4 litres of steaming water, which is instantly ready to use thanks to a new standard of water filtration technology that provides accuracy for scale and PH control. The Energy Saving Trust states that 40% of households boil the kettle at least four times a day, with 75% admitting to boiling more water than they need; accounting for a significant amount of water and energy wasted every year.
FACT:
Consumers are increasingly looking for ways to decrease plastic waste in the home. Research conducted by the United Nations highlighted that plastic drinking bottles are the second most common single-use plastic found in the environment.
A GROWING MARKET
With 24% of UK consumers having installed a steaming hot water tap in their kitchen in 2017 or planning to install one in 2018* manufacturers are taking a fresh approach to water consumption… 1. The InSinkErator® 4N1 Touch tap offers instant filtered steaming hot water, instant filtered cold water and regular hot and cold water from one combined fixture. The 4N1 Touch tap is available in three different shapes; the L shape, the J shape or the U shape, to complement a variety of kitchen styles. All three 4N1 Touch shapes are available in traditional finishes of brushed steel or polished chrome, as well as the on-trend finish of Velvet Black. 01923 375 349 • www.insinkerator.emerson.com/en-gb 2. Zip’s HydroTap All-in-One Celsius Arc delivers boiling, chilled and sparkling filtered water, plus hot and cold water in one tap. The 5-in-1 tap is available in the classic, ‘swan-neck’ Arc shape with the choice of 12 finishes including nickel, platinum and gold. 03456 005 005 • www.zipwater.co.uk 3. Following the success of its Amanzi 3-in-1 instant boiling hot water tap, Reginox has introduced a brushed steel version of the tap. Amanzi dispenses both standard hot and cold water through an elegant 360° swivel mixer spout, which ensures ease of use and flexibility. Boiling hot water, which has an adjustable temperature of between 75 and 98°c, is instantly dispensed via the child-safe spring locked handle and runs independently through the centre of the spout, ensuring the tap is always cool to the touch. 01260 280 033 • www.reginox.co.uk “At Reginox, sales of hot taps have quadrupled in the last 12 months and we anticipate they will quadruple again across 2019 and again across 2020. Interestingly, however, this growth doesn’t seem to be at the expense of ‘standard’ taps. 3-in-1 hot taps are the biggest seller and, although 4-in-1 taps offer potential for growth, I don’t believe they will overtake 3-in-1 taps until prices come down significantly.” Dave Mayer, Sales and Marketing Director of Reginox *2017 Houzz Kitchen Trends Study - UK
1
“The retro-fit market is important for growth in the specialist kitchen taps market due to the demand for kitchen taps as an individual purchase, not just as part of a kitchen renovation. To meet this demand InSinkErator® products are available through a number of different retailer channels, including builders’ and plumbers’ merchants. According to GFK, steaming hot water taps are performing well in the builders’ merchant sector thanks to increased consumer interest.” Anne Kaarlela, InSinkErator’s Marketing Communications Manager for Europe and Russia

THE EURO MILLIONS Matt Phillips, Head of UK operations at Rotpunkt UK tells K&B Journal his winning formula for European kitchen design in 2019…
K
Matt Phillips
&BJ: How is the trend for urban living and industrial styling influencing European kitchen design? MP: “The kitchen is a space in the home that is ever-evolving and 2019 forecasts show a need for unrestrictive design where the furniture does not conform to out dated kitchen layouts and styles with limited resources. Instead, more broken-plan furniture schemes are dictating the market and influencing consumer preferences in terms of construction, material, finish and space planning. “As the market continues to favour more open-plan environments, the modern kitchen has followed suit and we are finding that multi-room
furniture solutions that can adapt to different spaces in the home are now entering the kitchen and utility room. This has opened up the kitchen market to new and exciting design concepts which are driving trends towards hardworking furniture like room dividers, multipurpose workstations and display cabinetry through to asymmetrical layouts and wall-hung solutions. “I strongly believe as we move into 2019 that furniture will be ‘defined by difference’ and by this I mean, a brave mix of stand-out finishes and materials being used to identify different pieces of furniture and create zonal kitchen schemes that are not restricted by four walls or customary layouts.”

The Zerox Kitchen in New Umbra and City Brown Oak finishes, with new 20mm Glass Door with Crystal Glass
K&BJ: What are the latest innovations to enter this sector? MP: “Kitchens are personal and so it’s no surprise that market trends and styles remain eclectic and ultimately, down to the end user. However, our 2019 customer is embracing the darker colour palette where rich wood veneers are paired with black and metallic fixtures and fittings, along with masonry-style effects like marble and concrete all softened by contemporary matt finishes that capture a Scandi-noir aesthetic with industrial undertones. “I believe this change in colour story stems from developments in other areas of the kitchen which are also embracing black. For example, black PVD coated kitchen taps are now standard fare, along with striking work surfaces and built-in appliances and SDA’s no longer designed in just white. In fact, black remains the most loved colour in fashion, with any new colour trend coined as ‘the new black’! Known for its expensive façade, online searches for black and dark colours are up
93% in the last 6 months and I am confident that black kitchen furniture will continue to rise in popularity throughout 2019. “Interestingly, the Europeans are on average the tallest people in the world which is why we have introduced a new higher base unit height to answer this demand. This has entrenched a preference for slim line worktops, that when paired together with our higher base units increase the available storage space for the homeowner: an enduring factor within the kitchen furniture market.” K&BJ: How will these trend predictions shape Rotpunkt UK’s product offering? MP: “You will see that our cabinet and door colours will have fewer primary colours and more brown and grey shades. We will be launching new options next year, which cover the full range of greys and taupes, to balance our warm rich coffee browns and popular blacks. We have also refined a number of our wood colours to enhance overall appearance and design ability in three oak variants, and these
will also join a brand new wood décor we’re introducing in 2019: an affordable alternative to solid wood with no compromise on quality or final aesthetic. “Atypical door finishes will also come to market by Rotpunkt, including a selection of brand new and unique glass, metal and marble effect doors, laminate solutions with innovative surface treatments, pioneering colour-matched worktops, fine black edging techniques and a refreshing approach to modular space planning for the creation of ergonomic kitchen environments that are modern and long-lasting. “Rotpunkt will also pay focus on the handles and knobs next year, which it dubs as the ‘jewellery’ of a kitchen and this will include new surface textures for better grip, convenient push-to-open fittings for the height of utility and user-friendly shaped handles for extra comfort or overall design impact. Storage systems will also be top priority, with new drawer boxes, pull-outs and integrated larder systems being introduced as standard, across its furniture.”

The Carattere kitchen
The Magnifica bathroom collection
MODERN TRADITIONS Scavolini blends traditional taste with contemporary styling for 2019…
W
e often associate European kitchen design with contemporary lines, cool materials and striking finishes but for 2019, renowned European kitchen designer, Scavolini, is creating traditional kitchen and bathroom looks with a modern twist. “We are seeing a trend in both kitchens and bathrooms that emulate traditional design but with a contemporary spin,” beings Vittorio Naldi, UK Branch Manager of Scavolini. “This might be in the style of the pieces or in the materials used. You can take a classical furniture shape and finish it in a modern lacquer for a luxurious and individual result.”
The Carattere kitchen is a great example of Scavolini’s fusion of ages. “It’s a classic frame door but it’s used to create a clean, contemporary look,” explains Vittorio. Designed by Vuesse, the kitchen offers a sleek take on the traditional handle thanks to its distinctive handle grip that is recessed into the frame of the door. Modern materials have also been incorporated into the kitchen with the use of Nabuk oak veneer on the L-shaped table-height breakfast bar and an Onice Perla porcelain worktop. To coincide with the continual trend for grey interiors and matt finishes, the wall units and doors has been finished in a Dove grey matt lacquer, whilst the Switch cupboards either side of the fridge-freezer – which feature pocket doors that slide back to reveal the appliances and extra storage - are in Iron Grey matt lacquer. A further design, which incorporates a conventional handle in a modern style, is also available.
Scavolini’s Magnifica bathroom collection, designed by Gianni Pareschi, continues the trend to blend traditional taste with contemporary style. One of its most popular designs in the range features a wallmounted matt Ice lacquered cabinet with a Mineralmarble sit-on washbasin and polished chrome-finish handles. The same, on-trend lacquer and modern chrome-finish handles also feature on the wall-mounted cabinet and cabinet doors are lacquered inside and out for a seamless finish. Vittorio adds, “Our Magnifica bathroom furniture is available in a wide range of solutions. Doors can be gloss or matt lacquered in 30 finishes, including gold and silver leaf for added luxury. In addition, there are 16 different handle solutions, including gold and chrome finishes, with some even embellished with Swarovski crystal inserts. Counter tops range from engineered stone composites and ceramic to granite and marble in order for us to create designs that are as unique as our customers.”

THE MAIN TALKING POINT Family-run kitchen design business, The Main Company, have overhauled the kitchen of a 1950’s bungalow in Wokingham to create a beautiful, open-plan concept that reflect the homeowners’ unique sense of style…
A
Berkshire-based couple embarked on a major renovation product earlier this year that saw their 1950s three bedroom bungalow transform into a modern, five-bedroom house with an open-plan kitchen and living space with a mezzanine and vaulted ceiling. The family enlisted the expertise of bespoke kitchen specialists, The Main Company, following a chance encounter at the Grand Design show. The brief was to create a unique but fully-functional kitchen that combined timeless kitchen cabinets with rustic wood textures and industrial-inspired stainless steel. “The family were keen to achieve a balance between traditional and modern design, using wood textures to help breathe character into the recently renovated property,” begins Alex Main, Director of The Main Company. “Fitted within an open-plan space with a vaulted
ceiling, the design for the kitchen needed to include as much storage as possible to help achieve a minimal aesthetic and ensure a place for everything. With this in mind, we designed integrated storage within the kitchen island, as well as a floor to ceiling larder cupboard.” In order to reflect the homeowners’ style without restricting storage, the York-based kitchen designer added bespoke details throughout the kitchen, including custombuilt gin racks, rustic chopping board storage pockets and a larder complete with down lights and additional worktop space. Alex adds, “Personal details were designed with the family’s lifestyle in mind. As well as quirky additions, open shelving within the island for storing cookbooks, hiding away appliances and creating a place to access cooking essentials with ease were included in the bespoke design.”

Stainless steel details were incorporated to reflect the look of a professional kitchen
Reclaimed wood added a sense of age to the modern space
The family were also keen to have a hand painted kitchen with an element of contrast from the island, white quartz work surfaces and pale stone flooring. “It had to suit the contemporary design of the space but also create a kitchen that remained homely and provided plenty of space for entertaining friends and family,” explains Alex. “To do this, the kitchen units were painted in Little Greene’s Lamp Black, which perfectly complements the bi-fold doors and statement glass windows within the space. The sleek black units achieve an effortlessly modern aesthetic, especially when paired with the striking stainless steel fridge and industrial hinges and fittings. The island combines these elements with reclaimed grey barn oak for a rustic accent that softens the overall look and introduces character and warmth.”
Stainless steel and marble quartz surfaces were key design features
The natural texture of the reclaimed breakfast bar provides a central feature for the room, as well as the perfect place for the family to enjoy meals together. Alex adds, “The breakfast bar was designed with space for bar stools, providing an informal place to gather and cook together. With cooking a particular passion, stainless steel details from the island worktop to the fridge are included to reflect the look of a professional kitchen.” The fully-bespoke design ticked all the boxes for the family and on completion Mr Evans, the homeowner, said, “I love the mix of traditional and modern design and the different textures and materials used to give a unique look. Most importantly, Alex saw my vision and was able to make what I had in mind a reality.”
Units were painted in Little Greene’s Lamp Black

Woodliving’s bespoke Pavlis kitchen in Nautical Blue
A BLUE HUE
Shades of blue continue to thrive as WoodLiving’s MD predicts the growing colour trend for 2019…
W
oodLiving have been designing, manufacturing and installing bespoke wooden kitchens for over 15 years. Nestled in the heart of the Kent countryside, they skilfully craft every aspect of the kitchen using a combination of ethically sourced, sustainable, solid wood and complementary materials like granite or quartz. WoodLiving’s tailored approach to kitchen design gives the team an unprecedented insight into consumer trends and allows them to
experience areas of growth first hand. In recent years, the team have seen grey tones dominate the market but, as 2019 approaches, blue shades are becoming increasing popular for the bespoke kitchen company. Kyle Diplock, Director at WoodLiving explains, “Blue is a very traditional colour for kitchens and can be traced right back to Victorian times. We don’t use Farrow and Ball paint – our paint supplier matches their colours if we’re asked by our customers to use a particular shade from the brand – but ‘Downpipe’, ‘Manor House Gray’, ‘Lamp Room Gray’, ‘Off Black’, ‘Stiffkey Blue’ and ‘Hague Blue’ are proving most popular. I predict the trend for blues, greys and creams in the home will continue into 2019, as we are seeing no sign of this trend slowing down.”
The bespoke Pavlis kitchen reflects this colour trend perfectly. Featuring traditional styling but benefiting from modern 3D soft runners and soft close hinges, the contemporary country shaker kitchen – which comes with a lead time of three to four months - has been designed in Nautical Blue. Featuring traditional styling but benefiting from modern kitchen appliances and accessories, the fresh and vibrant painted door units – made from sustainable Scandinavian Red Wood - have been partnered with a granite island. Kyle adds, “The Pavlis kitchen’s unique colour is a combination of Mylands Bedford Square and Mylands Mews Blue and supplied by Morrells. This, teamed with the current trend for copper handles and accessories and classic antique brass, look amazing. I definitely envisage these colour trends continuing into 2019.”

SUPER SERICA
Looking for a thermohealing, anti-fingerprint, anti-scratch surface in trend-setting supermatt? Take a look at Serica from Alfatherm…
M
ade in Italy, Alfatherm’s Serica is setting new standards in the supermatt surfaces arena – not just because it has a warm and luxurious, silky, paint-like finish that is sure to go down well with consumers, but also because it has some key features that make it very, very practical. It’s not every parent whose two-year-old attacks the kitchen worksurface with a fork when the Terrible Twos strike, but one of the key selling points for Serica is the extremely robust, anti-scratch (and anti-fingerprint) technology incorporated into the surface. In the home, micro scratches can be healed by simply heating the worksurface through a protective cloth with an iron – and that, says Alfatherm, sets new standards. Fitters will love it because there’s no need to peel protective films – it’s truly antiscratch so it doesn’t need protection during the manufacturing stages. The finish is the result of substantial investment by Alfatherm in a new lacquering
line that, according to Alfatherm’s Marketing Manager, Barry Berman, “Encourages customers to feel and touch the surface” and gives them “a premium product at a realistic and commercial price.” Available in 30 fashionable stock colours for 3D membrane pressing, from adventurous terracotta to various shades of whites, creams, and greys the Serica finish sets new standards for super matt surfaces. Serica can be made to order in any colour (subject to minimum order production) and can also be used for flat lamination, for cut and edged slab doors as well as five piece profile wrapped doors, so from a manufacturing perspective it’s extremely versatile. It’s no less versatile from a design perspective either: in kitchens, the supermatt finish looks as good as it feels, especially in dark colours – but anyone looking for a product that can be used in the office, or for shopfitting or exhibition purposes, will find Serica’s versatility as alluring as its aesthetic appeal.

IT ALL ADDS UP You don’t have to be Einstein to work out 7+2=B9…
I
ntroduced in the autumn of 2015 by David Clouting Ltd., the B9 décor collection has become a firm favourite with manufacturers wanting to offer a high quality, deep textured painted look that can be seen (and almost felt) from several feet away. Originally launched in seven colours
including White, Ivory, Porcelain, Mussel, Stone Grey, Light Grey and Graphite Grey, the B9 collection has just grown by two new, on-trend colours, a soft Denim Blue and a deep Indigo Blue. And, naturally, the two new colours also have the tactile B9 quality of a genuine painted finish.
trends 2019 kitchen & bathroom journal december 2018 • 25
The B9 collection is perfect for manufacturers who want to free up capacity on their painting lines, or avoid painting entirely and replace it with an altogether more durable product that can be either membrane pressed or flat laminated.
Fully FIRA certified and available ex-stock, the 0.4mm thick décors in the B9 collection are available in small quantities of bespoke products, so mixed colours can be accommodated in an order, or they can be supplied in rolls of 1450mm wide and any length up to 200 metres.
Alternatively, choose your own colour with David Clouting’s Make-to-Order service, available with a minimum order length of 2,000 linear metres. Whichever way you look at it, 7+2=B9 is a successful equation even Albert Einstein would have been happy to have in his kitchen.

navigational instrument, the clever concepts show you key future trends and accurately identifying trends. So what can the industry expect in 2019? Sounds of Colour: We experience the world around us with all of our senses, often we see and hear simultaneously. With sound and visible light wavelengths being emitted from different ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum, this year Renolit’s colour trending department has used the connection between audio and visual to present new Colour Road colours that you can perceive or hear even with your eyes closed. These acoustic inspirations express the spirit of the age; they are connected to our emotions and their associated colour concepts. A selection from Renolit’s wide décor range showcases the interplay of trending colours with
current woodgrain designs, matt, high-gloss, and textured finishes. Noises of Life: In the first trend topic, “Noises of Life” Introduces a world of colours synonymous with everyday life, sparks flying around the sound of machinery on steel, of technology, engineering and craftsmanship; sounds we often associate with precision. It brings to life a world of colours with subtle shades of grey and brown, such as pearl grey, deep cement grey, simmering tin plate and grained brown leather. In interiors medium brown woods become relevant as well as a hint of concrete. Voices of Music: In Voices of Music the attention turns to sounds that are intentionally created, which provide an emotional balance to our often hectic lives. For many people,

music forms a connection with our inner selves, providing a gateway to experiencing ourselves in our entirety. Even just the first note of a recognised tune transports us to another place, conjuring images from our memory, making emotional connections between sight and sound. Colours full of spirit set the tone in this second trend topic which introduces a powerful orange, an emotional dark red, a vibrating violet and a metallic bronze shade. Echoes of Nature: Echoes of Nature combines trending colours that originate from nature and enrich our lives; bright shades of sunny yellow, the matt green of conifers, a deep ocean blue and the brilliant shades of the Northern Lights. These rich colours of nature once again offering fashion designers wealth of inspiration to draw from.

ON THE TILES Claire O’Brien, head of design and product at British Ceramic Tile, explores the kitchen and bathroom trends set to take the interior world by storm in 2019...
The bathroom is no longer just a functional room,” begins Claire O’Brien, head of design and product at British Ceramic Tile. “For some time its been regarded as a luxurious sanctuary, somewhere to unwind and enjoy some quiet time. From tranquil, spa-like environments, to bathrooms brimming with vibrancy, it’s all about creating a style statement that reflects the personality of the home.” Bathroom size is also influencing how the room us presented. Claire says, “Bathrooms are now much bigger spaces than previously, giving way to more statement furniture, and larger baths and showers where homeowners
can unwind. When it comes to décor, the trend is to echo the overall look and feel of the house through the bathroom, in-keeping with the rest of the home with decorative touches much more prominent than before. Think gold taps, painted baths, large statement mirrors, and tiles that transform surfaces from practical to wonderful.” It’s widely thought that the kitchen is the most important room in the house and consumers focus on the space being both functional and stylish. Claire explains, “Pendant lighting and open shelving are big in 2019 as consumers are paying closer attention to detail as a way to express their personal tastes. Islands will continue to

be popular, and we expect to see more technology being introduced. Smart kitchen devices are now commonplace and there’s a whole host of accessories and appliances up for grabs ranging from smart stoves and fridges to forks and plates that help you manage portion control. Surfaces are expressive and fun. We’re seeing a trend for walls and floors that set the tone, rather than blend in. Trends are becoming more adventurous with tiles and splashbacks bringing colour and pattern to surfaces on a grand scale. Distressed metal effects, rich jewel tones, Victorian patterns.” Key colours for 2019: Colour selection sets the tone for the appearance and atmosphere of any room. “Natural materials and neutral marbles will remain popular throughout 2019 but we will start to see flashes of colour being introduced through statement sinks and flooring,” says
Claire. “We will also see more greenery bring introduced through plants and foliage. Greys and silvers are still ever popular but they will be complemented by moody cool blues and slate greys, with warmer honey tones also set to come through.” Blush is back in a big way, adding a playful, feminine vibe to our homes. Beautiful yet understated, blush shades team effortlessly with metallic accents, industrial greys, intense black and wood effects, making it a versatile allrounder for surfaces. Claire adds, “It’s a colour trend that will make a massive impact across interiors and one retailers should embrace. Pastels, including soft blues and mint and sage green will be in hot demand as consumers turn to softer tones to reflect the latest trends sweeping through interior design.” In the kitchen, colour choices will range from natural neutrals to vibrant and bold colours including deep-blues and dark greys. “Industrial
style kitchens are a fast-emerging trend making a serious style statement in the home. The trend for weathered materials and aged finishes will continue to grow and tap into the Scandi Noir trend for everything dark and dusky.” Feature patterns for 2019: “It’s all about the floor with homeowners keeping walls simple and creating bold, stand out feature floors,” explains Claire. “Expect to see patterned floors featuring bold colours for something truly eye-catching as well as everpopular monotones. Patterns will become less intricate, but more striking with simple patterns resulting in a more sophisticated look. “The trend for Terrazzo-inspired finishes will also gather momentum in 2019 adding a sense of natural decoration. Re-mastered to blend with modern day design schemes, the look amplifies the trend for artisan interiors and will be seen everywhere from floors and walls through to accessories and furniture.”

SURFACE TRENDS
3
Oliver Webb, Sales & Marketing Director at Gerald Culliford shares his surface trend predictions for 2019… The marble look is still very much the trend in the mid market and as a result we sell a huge amount of natural Carrara marble and Quartz composite Carrara look. People really want to use a veined material in their kitchen, and more and more people want something unique. I can only see this trend growing. “The Carrara design will continue to be a popular look next year. A light worksurface is a common choice when partnered with darker units but I think there will be a shift towards slightly darker material in the next few years. The industry is already seeing darker surfaces stand out. “I think there will also be a shift away from polished surfaces. This makes many natural surfaces a little more durable. We are already seeing some companies introducing unpolished quartz but in the past, these surfaces have been problematic - the slightly open pours hold oils and are not often seen as the most practical choice. It will be interesting to see how this trend develops. “We also see a trend to more terrazzo looking surfaces, or what we call in the stone world, ‘brecciated stones’ - this is a bit more of a retro look. This is resulting in a move away from a plain surface. Instead, people are looking for something a bit busier in structure to give the kitchen a wow factor.”

10/10 FOR SICAM The Sicam team celebrated the tenth anniversary of the exhibition by opening a tenth pavilion…
I
t was celebrations all round at the Sicam exhibition this year: 2018 marks the tenth anniversary of a show that has found a place at the very heart of the annual international furniture fittings calendar, and by way of celebration, the organisers opened the tenth and last remaining pavilion of the Pordenone exhibition ground. The champagne flowed and birthday candles were duly blown out on a giant birthday cake, but for the Giobbi family – founder Carlo, daughter Carolina, son Michaele and the Exposicam team – there was another reason to celebrate: the arrival of a third generation to ensure continuation of this successful event. Congratulations to Mum, Carolina! The Sicam exhibition is very much a family affair and there’s no doubt, it does
have a family feel about it. “We’ve been going for ten years now, and we know almost all our exhibitors and have very good relations with them,” founder Carlo Giobbi told a packed press conference. “We have always had a different way of managing the fair. Our exhibitors are like family, which is one reason they book year after year. We limit the space – we won’t give 400m to somebody because we think 90 or 100 square metres is enough to show the product well. Visitors who come here from around the world are interested in the quality of the accessories, not the size of the stands – and by 2.30 on the first day, we’d already welcomed visitors from 89 different countries.” It’s a policy that clearly works well: 93% of the increased exhibition space at Sicam

2018 had already been rebooked by the time the exhibition opened its doors on 16th October and the deadline for the rest to decide was set at 15th December. So, what made Sicam’s 10th such an attraction for visitors? Sicam is like an easyto-navigate Interzum with more than 600 exhibitors and a product spread that’s every bit as wide. Alongside well-known brands in hardware and internal cabinet fittings, visitors were able to browse solid surfaces, décor products, accessories, materials and novelties - even sinks and taps - from a host of new companies, and many of the products on show were new. Some exhibitors do hold back for Interzum, of course, but such is the importance of Sicam today that Salice devoted significant stand space to an entire new collection and others like Ninka,
Kröning, Saviola, Lapitec, Quartzforms and many more showed prototypes or new additions to their collections. At one end of the market there were inexpensive plastic components and at the other, Fama showed its brand-new diamond encrusted handle collection – with prices at around 1,000 Euros per handle. I don’t recall having ever seen anything quite so special at Interzum, nor any of the other exhibitions I’ve attended over the last 25 years as Editor of Furniture Journal, but then this is Sicam. And it’s like no other exhibition. If you haven’t yet booked your hotel in Pordenone for Sicam 2019, now would be a good time to do so because the popularity of this show means accommodation in the town is always in short supply. The dates for Sicam 2019 are 15th-18th October.

to fit even big doors and it will really cut cabinet assembly time. It’s easier to fix the cup onto the board because it’s pre-assembled with the fast-fix dowels already on the hinge cup. When you put the hinge into the hole, it’s very easy to position it perfectly and it can be screwed in with just three turns. There is less risk of the hinge cup moving and it’s very secure. It’s then a very simple matter to clip the hinges to the cabinet. They just snap on. “The most popular features of this hinge are the three-way adjustment and the snapon connection. The real advantage is with big doors, especially if you want to put five hinges on a door and, especially if you are short of room, the snap-on feature makes fitting the door much easier and quicker.”

The Ever bathroom range features chrome grab rails and an anti-slip seat
FUTURE PROOFING Director of Inta, Stuart Gizzi, talks to K&B Journal about the growing need to cater for all ages and abilities in the bathroom…
W
ith an ageing population and an increasing number of adult children returning to their parental homes, multigenerational living in the UK is on the rise. Research by insurance company Aviva shows that multi-family households in the UK grew by 50% between 2005 and 2015. Assuming the same rate of growth in the next 10 years, there will be almost half a million multi-family households by 2025. Having two - or even three - generations living under one roof means families are required to adapt their home to meet
everyone’s needs and one room where this can prove difficult, is the bathroom. Older generations or those with limited mobility may need living aids, shower seats and grab rails, while younger people often want to create a relaxing bathroom with stylish products and accessories. So is the industry catering for this socalled multigenerational bathroom and does a happy medium for every member of the family really exist? “When we design bathrooms we should be thinking about longevity, rather than just looking at short-term fixes,” says

The collection has been designed to offer contemporary aesthetics and practical benefits with the introduction of ontrend polished copper and chrome grab rails
Inta’s independent living products include a range of accessories to assist in bathing
Stuart Gizzi, Director of bathroom manufacturer, Inta. “Multigenerational bathrooms are not impacting the bathroom market as much as they should be and the industry needs to do more to embrace this growing trend. At the moment it is still a niche market but when you consider the rate at which multi-family living is increasing, the industry is not up to speed. As manufacturers we should all be striving to design products that are practical and safe for older generations, yet contemporary and sleek enough for younger people to want to install them. It’s really simple - we need to move away from thinking that bathroom products for older generations are ugly.” Inta has been developing and manufacturing high-quality bathroom products for over 15 years and has designed a series of independent living products for its ‘Ever’ range. The design puts safety first but doesn’t compromise on aesthetics. In fact, its on-trend polished copper and chrome grab rails and black or chrome shower seat work seamlessly in any modern bathroom setting. But Inta’s innovations don’t stop there. Thanks to copper’s antimicrobial
properties, the rail eliminates bacteria quickly, preventing the spread of germs. The polished finish will keep its lustre, while concealed fixings with resin fixing plates mean that it looks neat. The contemporary shower seat features an anti-slip surface and has a maximum load of 125kg, whilst the slip-resistant polished chrome grab rails, manufactured from full brass construction, come with concealed fixings. “Grab rails, low-level shower trays and shower seats do not have to look like they belong in a hospital,” continues Stuart. “The industry needs to promote future-proofing bathrooms to avoid families having to rip out and replace items further down the line.” As well as designing contemporary fixtures and fittings, developing the latest shower technology is also crucial to the advancement of multigenerational bathrooms, according to Stuart. Stuart explains, “I think digital showers will actually lead the way for multigenerational bathrooms. The benefit of digital showers is that they can be preset to optimum temperature and pressure. Some can even be switched on using a smartphone - so they
are ideal for families who want the added reassurance of being able to control these aspects to ensure the safety and wellbeing of their younger and older relatives.” And while aesthetically-pleasing products and digital innovation are key for the future of multigenerational bathrooms, safety still remains the number one priority at Inta. “Multigenerational bathroom or not, I can’t reiterate enough how important the installation of a TMV-approved fitting is,” Stuart says. “A basic TMV2-compliant valve costs no more than £40 - it is not expensive when you’re talking about the difference between life and death.” TMV2 certified valves offer the highest level of accreditation of anti-scald thermostatic mixing valves. Correctly installing and maintaining approved thermostatic mixing valves could help prevent hundreds of thousands of tragic scalding accidents. Stuart concludes, “Ultimately, multigenerational bathrooms should embrace independence and inclusivity for everybody. To do this, manufacturers need to develop products that are accessible and safe for all ages.”

The Matrix Medium basin lends itself to installations in care homes as well as in a private bathroom

hen designing a bathroom for the elderly or disabled, Pressalit Care’s number one ethos is that all the equipment in the room should easily adapt to its user’s individual needs. With over 40 years’ experience of designing bathrooms for the less-abled, Pressalit Care knows flexibility makes it easier for users to look after themselves, for carers to assist, and
all importantly for respecting an individual’s peace of mind, privacy and self-esteem. New this year is the Pressalit Care Matrix Medium basin, height adjustable and operated by integrated power buttons on the front of the bowl. Simple and intuitive, the red buttons on white are easy to see and use, allowing most users to be able to adjust the basin height themselves. The slim lifter unit means wheelchairs can be manoeuvred close to the wall. The Matrix Medium basin provides invaluable support for the elderly and for those in a wheelchair thanks to two grab handles smoothly cast into the front of the basin. These handles provide a welcome grip for people transferring in or out of a
wheelchair, and a safe and secure support for those standing. Pressalit Care has thought of every detail to make this basin indispensable in the bathroom, whether it is to be used by a single user in an en-suite, or indeed in a multi-user situation in a care home or institution. The inward curve of the basin’s front edge allows the user to lean into the tap and reach it easily, whilst the shallow bowl gives plenty of space for wheelchair manoeuvrability. This is a wide basin, that has profiled raised edges to prevent water spillages over the side. The flat surface around the bowl provides an additional ledge for support, or makes an ideal space for the storage of personal toiletries.

“There is an increasing demand for added safety in the bathroom. This is especially true for projects, particularly multi-generational and ‘lifetime homes’, where space and planning for later life are of paramount importance. We take into consideration elements such as ease of access and anti-slip solutions. We’ve also seen increased demand for larger ‘bath sized’ shower trays. Reduced mobility later in life can cause restrictions with getting in and out the bath safely. Replacing the footprint of the bath with a larger showering space is often the favoured solution.” Adam Teal, Head of Sales, Kaldewei UK
The NexSys shower surface from Kaldewei is an innovative new 4-in-1 complete installation ready system, consisting of a waste channel, sloping support, sealing and an enamelled shower surface enabling ultra simple and fast installation. As sales for compact bathroom furniture are predicted to rise in 2019, K&B Journal talks to Julie Lockwood, Product Manager for Bathrooms to Love by PJH, to find out what factors are driving the market… The bathroom furniture sector is a key growth area within our industry – sales are currently growing steadily and the potential for continued growth throughout 2019 and beyond is extremely positive. “The reasoning behind this is a combination of strong consumer demand with innovative product development. Consumers are looking for more flexible and practical storage solutions that not only look and feel luxurious and design-led, but can be fitted around and within, all the key elements that make up the bathroom. “Product development is constantly evolving and bathroom furniture manufacturers are continuously creating stylish and high quality designs. The classic small and bijoux bathroom still dominates in the UK, so space-saving bathroom cabinetry is more important than ever for maximising space. Another driving force behind the growth in bathroom furniture is the rise in multi-generational homes, with all members of the household needing organisation and storage throughout their bathrooms, en-suites and cloakrooms. “As well as providing essential storage, furniture is now the best way to design and style a bathroom, unifying all elements in the room seamlessly. Features that have emerged as important in kitchens, such as soft-close doors and drawers, integrated lighting and internal pull-out drawers, allow retailers to add value. Beautiful on-trend door colours and textures, matched with such high specification cabinet fixtures and fittings all add to this desirability. Examples include textured wood grain finishes, tactile matt finishes, hidden handles.” “Simplified installation is also a key trend. Ease of installation has never been so important, so I expect to see more manufacturers offering rigid cabinets, which is exactly why we have been rolling out our ‘One-Box’ solution across many of our fitted and modular bathroom furniture ranges. The cabinets are supplied pre-assembled for ease of ordering, delivery and installation. It’s the ultimate in hassle-free installation and high quality build.

THE LONG & SHORT OF IT Think free standing baths K are only suitable for large bathrooms? Think again. K&B Journal talks to Phil Etherden, MD of The Albion Bath Co, to find out the space saving hacks that could transform the smallest of spaces…
&BJ: What are the basics everyone needs to consider when it comes to measuring an existing bathroom space and drawing up a floorplan? PE: “We all aspire to have a sumptuous free standing bath in the middle of a large room with a massive chandelier hanging over the top. However, when you consider that most bathrooms, even in large houses, are no more than 12 square metres, this may seem more of a pipe dream than a reality. But, even with a limited amount of floor space, plan carefully and you can still create a stunning result. “When it comes to deciding where you’re going to position your bathroom fittings, the best tip is to think about how they’re used and in what order. With this in mind, we would often recommend to bathroom designers that the sink or basin is often best placed closest to the door, as it is most likely to be the last stop in most bathroom routines. The toilet and other fittings can then be further into the room. This not only provides more privacy but saves you walking through puddles left behind by people stepping out of the bath or shower.” K&BJ: What clever tricks and solutions can designers use to create a sense of spaciousness in a small bathroom?
PE: “Don’t be tempted to cram large items into a small room. You don’t want to lose all aesthetic value. With a smaller bathroom, the trick is to maximise the visible area of the floor, so we recommend that free-standing baths with feet or designed on a plinth are incorporated into the design. High level toilets also create more visible space as the cistern is above eye level and wall mounted basins won’t take valuable floor area. If possible, position the bath so it’s the first thing you see when you open the door. Bath tubs are now considered decorative as well as functional, so use the bath as a feature piece. Conversely, position the toilet in a discreet area but give thought to the soil pipe routing. For darker rooms, create space with colours and lighting.” K&BJ: Does the Albion Bath Company have any specific product ranges that has been developed for homeowners working with a smaller bathroom space? PE: “Here at Albion, we have developed products that allow you to enjoy freestanding baths in smaller bathrooms. Tubby Tubs from Albion are short and compact while still being deep enough for you to enjoy a truly satisfying bathing experience. Plan carefully and even the smallest of bathrooms can be beautiful, functional and fun to be in.”
