t’s one of those designs that never seems to go out of style. A popular favourite for many, the classic kitchen has had a few minor tweaks over the years but its core style-roots stay true to its name. In recent months, we have seen the return of nature-inspired shades and textures. Cross cuts and sawmark finishes are more life-like than ever, thanks to heavily embossed vinyl and 3D natural woodgrain effects – a distinct look making itself heard at last September’s MoOD exhibition in Brussels. Organic colours are also becoming a sought-after style-statement for 2013, with the introduction of earthy, natural tones sitting comfortably alongside contemporary matt finishes. For the styleconscious customer, the introduction of nostalgic power blues, greens and yellows is also starting to emerge thanks to the current painted door craze. Whilst many may not want to commit to the vintage look fully, quirky door-only ranges, eccentric furniture statements and retro appliances are also a retailer’s secret weapon when faced with completing the look for less.

The Heritage Kitchen Collection from Crosby offers a traditional style but with a choice of up to date accent colour options. The foundation of the range is a sophisticated Oyster coloured door and cabinet, with selected doors in a choice of Olive and Cornflower - allowing a huge choice of accent colour design themes. All doors are manufactured in MDF with a raised and fielded square panel and finished in a matt paint effect foil. A selection of glass wall units, dresser, open and curved units are also available. 01709 872637 www.crosby-kitchens.co.uk

Worktops are solid composite in Galaxy, whilst the statement island, with its soft curves, boasts a solid composite worktop in Galaxy and a practical block in solid walnut. It also features a new Denver Steel D handle and plenty of internal storage solutions. 01484 514212 • www.elliskitchens.co.uk

Classic kitchen styles are flexible and bring quality and longevity in design together with trend led colours. With this in mind, Mereway is seeing a bias towards colours from nature, with inspiration taken from greens, greys and browns; colours which create a comforting and relaxing ambiance. Earthy tones Pumice, Mussel and Pebble sit neatly in this category, lending themselves perfectly to both flat slab, woodgrain and shaker door styles within Mereway’s Complete Kitchen Collection; a range of classic and contemporary kitchens that suit many tastes, budgets and lifestyles. 0800 028 4466 www.merewaykitchens.co.uk

ith over 2,000 possible door style and finish combinations to choose from, East Coast Fittings is not one to be left in the dark when it comes to up and coming trends. With an influx in demand from interior designers and consumers alike, the Devon and Cornwall collection is the latest range of classic doors to be included in the company’s extensive product portfolio. Presented in a classic in-frame style, the new painted timber door collection is constructed from solid birch, which, in keeping with its nostalgic features, provides a timeless design that works well with the demands of a modern day kitchen. Launched in March, the collection boasts flexibility with an offer of 13 charming matt paint colours and a ‘pre-primed’ option, which leaves you free to paint the doors whatever colour you choose on delivery. Marketing Manager David Burley adds, “We believe that offering choice is the key for our success. In-frame doors have grown rapidly in popularity recently, so it was only logical for us to add them to our product offering and we are confident that they will exceed expectations.” Aesthetically, the doors may look rustic but the engineering behind their installation is anything but. Designed so not to compromise the quintessential character of the kitchen, they can be installed using either traditional butt hinges, to give that stylish in-frame look, or ‘faux’ butt hinges that can be simply screwed into the pre-notched door, so modern soft closing concealed hinges can be used. But the range doesn’t begin and end with doors. Known for it’s continual product development, East Coast Fittings has also created a range of high quality cabinetry, exclusively designed for the Devon and Cornwall in-frame range. This includes solid oak dovetailed drawer boxes that incorporate the very latest Blum Movento concealed runner system and concealed soft close hinges for added luxury. A selection of elegant accessories is also available, offering you variety when creating the perfect kitchen. style icon to many, the classic kitchen’s humble beginnings have evolved and matured over time to become a firm favourite with consumers in all budget sectors. The simple, relaxed style and timeless features appeal to a wide spectrum of buyers and find favour in both period and contemporary homes. Continually evolving its designs for over 60 years, German-based kitchen manufacturer Schüller has created a collection of classic kitchens that, whilst staying true to its recognisable design features, incorporates the requirements of modern life. From ergonomic design to environmentally aware manufacturing, every aspect of the classic kitchens in the schüller.C collection has been designed to create a kitchen that reflects individuality, lifestyle, habits and aspirations. Incorporating popular neutral colours and natural materials, Schüller’s collection includes traditional whites, earthy tones and light to dark grain woods. Optional accent colours, chosen with due regard to historical relevance, can be added to bring the best of classic design right up to date. “In its simplest form, the best classic kitchen designs are the ones that look at home in the contemporary setting as much as in the period home,” says Wayne Dance, Managing Director of InHouse, Schüller’s exclusive UK distributor. “Classic kitchens create a heart to the home.” To create this important balance, Schüller designs its kitchens around the individual, offering flat and framed wall cabinets, glass doors with beautifully designed handles and moulded and detailed lacquered veneer and laminate framed fronts in an array of finishes and colours. Its true mid-market grid system maximises space and facilitates perfect alignment. The result: a stylish and innovative functional space that is tailored to the individual. UARTZFORMS claim to have unrivalled versatility, resistance and aesthetic performance – three product qualities which will give you an edge over the competition. But what else makes QUARTZFORMS stand out from the crowd? The surface company’s background offers the greatest insight into its pioneering design concepts and technological advancements. Owned by an Italian family but located in Magdeburg, Germany, QUARTZFORMS offers Italian flair combined with German precision engineering. The result: a range of innovative designs that are refreshingly different to other surface finishes available in the UK market today. Produced on the latest Bretonstone® production line, with slabs manufactured by mixing 93% pure quartz with 7% of polyester resin and pigments, the exclusive Bretonstone® vacuum vibro-compression system gives QUARTZFORMS’ quartz product a high impact resistance and dense, compacted surface finish. To create a higher gloss level and consistent finish, 36 polishing heads on the polishing line take small steps in the finishing process to create the best possible look. Two designs proving popular with UK kitchen and bathroom designers are QUARTZFORMS’ VEINED and BREEZE finishes. The VEINED finish is a reinterpretation of natural stone which recreates its subtle appearance and emphasises its beauty. The finely-grained surface of BREEZE is characterised by a light vein, with shades of delicate and elegant hues. Richard Barrett, Sales Director, adds, “We are not looking to reinvent the wheel, just make it better. It is not an easy task but thanks to QUARTZFORMS’ constant strive for perfection, we can offer high quality quartz material for kitchen and bathroom surfaces, wall coverings and flooring.” Exclusively available in the UK through QF Distribution Ltd, stocks of over 40 designs/colours and up to 1,500 slabs are readily available in a range of thicknesses. It also has access to over 15,000 slabs on a short lead time from the QUARTZFORMS production facility in Germany. The recycling waste compactor from Krushr quickly reduces the volume of rubbish, at the push of a button. There are separate compartments with compaction mechanisms for cans/tins and packaging materials like cardboard and plastic. On the K600 (right) there are also 2 storage drawers for glass, or even paper or compost. The Krushr holds up to 12 bottles and 60 cans before it needs to be emptied, making recycling quicker, easier and more convenient. Designed to be fully integrated with kitchen doors or an alternative stainless steel door, there are three sizes (300, 400 and 600mm) to fit standard cabinets. 020 7871 0488 www.krushr.com

t’s a chilling fact that household rubbish has increased by 20% in the last five years. It’s a figure that is slowly creeping up and whilst many are keen to start recycling food waste, plastic and paper, there is still the issue of storage. Nobody wants to see several bins lined up in their kitchen. For one, it’s not hygienic but from a style perspective, it simply doesn’t look very nice. In the last few years, there has been a sharp increase in the number of households recycling their waste. Gone are the days when you had to drive around to find a bottle bank, households now have between two and four distinctive bins that are collected weekly. Manufacturers have taken note and have created practical storage solutions that, whilst offering quick and easy ways to recycle, stay in keeping with a modern day kitchen. Hide away compartments, space-saving designs and colour-coded lids are just a few of the ways waste management manufacturers are making our lives easier. But what about food waste? A recent report created by food waste disposal firm Insinkerator has shown that as many as six in ten families regularly fail to finish their meals. Instead, food is often thrown directly into an outside bin. A spokesman for Insinkerator said: “Throwing away the odd bit of food from each meal might not seem like a lot, but when you add that up over a week or year, it’s a staggering amount.” An easy solution, that rids us of this much-hated task, is a food waste disposer. Now an affordable solution for any kitchen, it offers a fuss-free, hygienic way to deal with left-overs. It’s also style-conscious, with discreet and space-saving designs, making it quick and easy to lessen your carbon footprint.

t claims to be the world’s leading trade fair for furniture production and interior finishing and after a four-day show that recorded over 53,000 visitors from 148 countries, the title can certainly be justified. If the sheer size of the halls didn’t impress, the innovative designs and unique concepts certainly would have got your design buds tingling. Size really was everything this year. The compact living concept was in full swing, with a clear focus on today’s growing urban lifestyle culture. Fluency was key. A smooth integration from kitchen to living room to bedroom was essential. Hidden kitchen appliances, camouflaged work surfaces and sliding units were a popular choice on the Hettich, Häfele and Salice stands. Once something you saw only in a space-age thriller, hide-away units and pop-up appliances that have the ability to conceal whole rooms have been adapted to maximise and accentuate space in the home, whilst remaining as stylish as ever. But the trend didn’t stop there. Storage and waste management manufacturers were keen to display just how versatile space had become inside the unit. Very much in keeping with its company philosophy, Vauth-Sagel’s ‘Made in Germany’ hunting lodge was a showstopper. Working closely with the FSC to guarantee its wood and paper products are sourced from responsibly managed forests, the design was a clear environmental message to all visitors.

interzum compact trend is a serious contender in a world where bigger often means best. Step away from the limelight of new concepts and the post-recession shackles were still evident, with many stands choosing to revamp their range of inoffensive chrome and stainless steel components rather than stray into unknown territory. This in itself created a trend shift. Bold statement colours were few and far between. Once a must for many European countries, this year’s colour pallet had been significantly toned down. The bright reds, lime greens and electric blues of previous Interzums had been replaced with subtle accent colours and an influx of neutral tones that are already making an appearance in kitchen and bathroom showrooms in the UK. Earthy tones such as mussel, chalk, oyster and olive took to the stage, with many stands focusing on going back to nature and promoting a safe message about the environment.

The link with nature continued. Between the smooth and sleek finishes displayed on many stands, the introduction of texture was clearly visible. A revival concept of sorts, today’s 3D embossed vinyls not only look real but feel real too. The woodgrains are more playful than previous years and whilst still offering defining features, the design itself is softer offering more flexibility and ease when mixing texture to create a unique style. Looking ahead, the demand for bespoke options is rising. It’s clear to see that choice is needed in the marketplace. Your customers want a room that is not only customised to meet their exact needs but also something that is unique to them. Giant leaps are being taken in this field so exclusive products can increase retailers offerings and offers consumers exactly what they want. If you missed Interzum 2013, make a note in your diary for Interzum 2015. The dates are 5-8 May 2015.

innovation @ interzum The Clic system from Egger makes it possible to assemble furniture without tools. Instead of glue, screws or dowels, the individual components are joined using a tongue & groove joint system milled into the material, reminiscent of the click principle used in laminate flooring. As a result, end customers need nothing more than their hands to assemble the Clic system. Available in several bright unicolours and modern woodgrain décors, visitors could be seen throughout the exhibition with a sample Clic box in their hand.

The newly launched Virtual Design Studio offers lifesize projection and absolute flexibility to change décors at the touch of a button. This walk-in projection booth presents a visual of a kitchen which is so realistic that it beats any on-screen design program hands down for consumer buying experience. Try any Egger décor on the fascias, combine it with any worktop, experiment with woodgrains and uni colours, place accent colours on the drawers and woodgrains on the doors wherever your client wants to see them - everything is possible from the easy-to-use control console.

Making their debut at Interzum 2013 were new décors in Egger’s “Timeless” trend and surface textures to delight any textureholic. For the first time, Egger’s synchronised pore surfaces were shown in Oak, Chestnut and Elm woodgrains. Gladstone Oak (pictured) underscores the distinctive character of the new oak décor series especially well. There were also deeply brushed surface effects (Brushed Wood), ceramic effects and Soft Matt and Painted Wood effects in unicolours. New worktops include Concrete and Ceramic, Jackson Pine, Seiser Pine and Trojan Oak. Roma Plastik provides edgings for all new décors.

trong 3D effects, natural colours, rustic elements and saw marks have been on trend for a while. The new generation of décors will continue the theme with high quality and realism in prints but for the coming year, rustic effects will be softer and less exaggerated. Softer colours will replace acid colours and design will lose its starkness. Delicate, fine cracks and fine knots will replace rugged effects in woodgrains. In the past we’ve seen a lot of beige and brown in combination with woodgrains. The consumers of the future will want to play more with design to create indivduality in their homes and they are more willing to mix textures and colours - yellows and blues are coming more strongly. Unusual designs and combinations will provide them with even more individuality. Woodgrains will continue to appear in combination with accent colours but the accent colours of the coming year will be less extreme: soft, inviting tabasco, subtle browns, softer reds and petrol blues. Bright colours stand for optimism - necessary in a crisis - and we will continue to see these in fashion but with a more subtle interpretation. We will see more soft pinks and cosy, feminine, Nordic colours. Knitted structures and graphic designs will play an increasing role and we’ll see more interpretations of concrete and stone with warm oaks and heattreated wood effects.” Examples from Schattdecor’s Interzum stand. décor trends 2013-14 “S

tructure is the really big thing at the moment, especially when combined with woodgrain and stone. Solid colours are being given more structure. However, the trend is to create a canvas to set off the colours by using concrete, stone and weathered elements. In terms of woodgrains, oak is still hugely popular but the trend is to bring timbers that have already had a life - reclaimed and used oaks, even fossilised timbers - into the modern environment. We will see more combinations of unicolours and timbers, super matte finishes with woodgrains, softer rustic effects. The heavy rustic look has gone too far and we’re seeing a move away from this. Retro elements are trendy with younger people and there will be an increasingly strong influence from the 1950s - but always with a modern interpretation. The influence of ancient civilisations and their scripts and writing may also start to grow. People want secure and cosy but there is a clear division between the business world and the sensitive world of the home.” Examples from Chiyoda’s Interzum stand. ow the economic crisis has passed, people feel more free to experiment with interior design and combinations. Colour is still about grey tones and naturals because these allow for brighter accent colours such as yellows, oranges, deep reds, rust, some shades of green and blues from dark to petrol blue. The trend is to replace the really bright colours we’ve seen in the last year with texture and this will be the main focus for the coming year. The tendancy will be to reduce colour, to shrink away from acidics and replace strong tones. The bright yellows of 2012 will become more subtle: curry tones, warm yellows. We will see more deep texture effects, though perhaps not so rough and rustic as in the past. The trend towards roughness of texture reached its height and we are now seeing a more refined approach to texturing. New metallics are coming in - not like the original golds and silvers; metallics mixed with colours, so there is a hint of luxury, maybe a hint of exotic. Luxury is especially important in living rooms. The bathroom, in contrast, will be seen as a wellness temple and this is where we will see more metallics. We will also see the influence of Eastern culture: sometimes cool colours, sometimes warm reds and oranges.”

here’s an evolution taking place in design. We’ve seen the extremes, the revolutionary elements. Now we’re taking everything we’ve seen in the past year or two and applying subtlety to it. Heavy, saw-cut woodgrains with deep cracks and large knots will take on a softer appearance - it’s a little bit like we’re applying elegance to the rustic trend. Maybe in flooring it will be different but I don’t see the heavy rustic elements in the furniture of the future. Rustic as a trend is softening. Woodgrains will still play a significant part in design but we are seeing other natural products influencing design: concrete, stone, slate and bark, for example. “We’ve seen strong colours and strong contrasts in the last year. For the coming 2013-2014 year we will see changes. Strong acids are no longer with us. They are too aggressive now. Colours will move in a warmer, softer direction with reduced contrast in smooth designs that underline calm and tranquillity. What’s coming up are the pastel tones: pastel light green, pastel yellow, pastel blue. The brilliant yellow that’s been around for a while is warming with curry tones and hints of evening sunlight. I think we’ll see more of the Scandinavian painted colours in this year’s décor schemes, especially blues, greens and soft pinks. There will also be niche elements in the designs, such as interpretations of writing and scripts from ancient civilisations - always with subtle, perhaps abstract interpretations which may not make their origins obvious.” Examples from the Interzum stand of Impress. lways a stand filled with innovation, Blum’s range of new products and advances certainly didn’t disappoint at this year’s Interzum. Showcasing some of its most popular designs from previous years, it also dedicated an area to its newly launched product range. The first was Blum’s lift system, Aventos HK-XS and HK-S. Based on a new kind of construction, it is ideal for installation above refrigerators and larder units. Its new Tip-On mechanical opening has also been designed for handle-free wall cabinets in compact areas - making the two a perfect combination. Continuing to create practical and stylish designs, Blum’s newly launched Tandembox Antaro offers a rectangular or enclosed drawer gallery, which has been created to work alongside a range of interior décors with glass, metal and wood elements available. Blum’s new Legrabox, which holds between 40-70kg, is available in two modern lines that emphasis its streamline look and sleek design. The Movento runner system has also been upgraded. Runners can now be flexibly positioned and mounted directly onto the cabinet base. This makes it easier to implement new design ideas such as open cabinets and pull-out surrounds for hifi equipment, without having to use a visible screw-on leg. Keen to conceal all elements, Blum’s micro-engineered Clip Top Blumotion can now offer a new opening angle of 107 degrees. It has a smaller drilling depth of just 11.5mm and can be used for door thickness of 15mm or more. Always keen to show you its ideas for the future, Blum also presented two concept studies, designed to bring even more convenience to modern furniture, which drew much attention. The first was the ability to apply Servo-Drive electric motion to wall cabinets, allowing them to move to counter level for easy retrieval of items from the top shelves. The other was a solution to overcoming counter-acting forces and finally combining the Tip-On mechanical opening system with Blumotion soft close. With no launch date for either product set, Interzum was the ideal platform to gain valuable feedback and opinions and with the rumours of new products currently being worked on, Interzum 2015 could be a very interesting show indeed. 01908 258700 www.blum.com

he trend for rustic romanticism is stamping its mark on the decorative landscape: as ever, oak designs take centre stage, while highly structured surfaces evocative of split wood and matt surfaces give a natural feel. Launching 29 new stock range additions and a variety of innovative make-to-order designs, Renolit has based its pioneering 3D and 2D products on these inspiring trends.

Roca New to Renolit, Roca is available in two versions that both unite an intensive array of colours. The reddish brown Roca Rust, with brown tones inter-mingled with burgundy red as an accent harmonises particularly well with white and light beige. The lighter variation Roca Cream (pictured) works best with neutral tones such as off-whites, beige or a light grey.

Magellan Magellan Vintage P has a warm grey shade with light touches of beige to make it look like it has been bleached by the sun and a discreet shimmer of silver lends a hint of exclusivity.

rustic romantic Thermo Thermo A (pictured) is a discreet blackened oak with finely grained areas. It’s richly dark colour with red undertones provides a charismatic and sophisticated design, whilst its elegant surface structure gives a discreet touch. Additionally, Thermo B offers a slightly browner effect tinged with a golden hue.

Elmo Available in two elegant nuances of grey, the new Elmo décor is a linear interpretation of the highly characterful elm, which emphaises the deep and dynamic wood structure of Renolit’s Veralinga emboss. With its slender stripes, Elmo produces fine lines that offer subtle texture and style.

Brabant Timeless and elegant, Brabant oak décor is available in two colour ways, each combined with different matching surface structures to give both a unique appearance. (Brabant B pictured). A warm mid toned adaptation is

In the last few years, there has been a sharp increase in the number of bathroom solutions available for the less-able. With an ageing population and disabilities more commonly diagnosed, the market is thriving. But how do current products on the market sum up? Are the products as diverse as the disabilities? And what can retailer do to increase their sale chances? The Neaco Bathroom Range now offers a wide range of contemporary grab rails, support rails, shower seats and accessories available in a new Chrome-effect finish. Manufactured from powder-coated aluminium, the Chrome-effect products complement the other contemporary aesthetics in the Neaco Bathroom Range, including the Metallique satin aluminium finish available with its half-height shower enclosures and true level access shower grilles. German designer Rainer Moll has produced an innovative and clever collection for Villeroy & Boch, designed specifically for the mature generation. The Lifetime collection demonstrates clever solutions with well thought out ergonomics. By incorporating grips that are not immediately apparent, experimenting with mobility and lowering heights, the bathroom has been given a new lease of life for those who may have mobility difficulties. Functions include rims on the washbasin and recessed grips which offer support whilst standing and a concealed overflow with anti-splash rim on the basin. 0800 953 0234 www.villeroy-boch.co.uk

hen I first asked about the equipment needed in a less-able bathroom, a list was soon compiled of the usual culprits. Grip handrails, height-adjustable toilets and sinks and easyaccess showering facilities - all classed as necessities. But it’s all well and good having these things in place but are they user friendly? John Hesp, a regular member at the MS group, summed it up perfectly: “My bathroom was designed by a non-disabled person and sometimes, what may seem practical to others, may not be a practical solution for me.” Many say that a detailed consultation with retailers and fitters would be beneficial to all parties involved. This would then offer a great opportunity for retailers to really understand what their customers need. John adds, “Although everyone here today has MS, we are all unique and have individual requirements that need to be considered when purchasing a bathroom.” But what about style? Is it still an important factor when choosing your bathroom? Well, the general consensus was yes - your bathroom should reflect your style, not your disability. Michael Ridealgh, who went to the extreme of designing his own bathroom, believes that style still prevails. “There was a serious lack of stylish products for wheelchair users when I designed my bathroom a few years ago. To get the look I wanted, which was not dissimilar to the mainstream designs available at the time, I ended up creating safety rails out of stainless steel cinema doors, just so I could have a modern look.” He adds, “Today, it seems that less-abled bathrooms are becoming more stylish but it needs to be affordable.” Several members of the MS group, thanks to recent product developments, have created a bathroom they are pleased with but everyone agreed that planning and research was key. Lynn Nicholls, a fellow MS group member, regrets being so hasty when replacing her bathroom. “When my symptoms became worse, I quickly removed my bath and replaced it with a walkin shower. Although the shower has a ramp, grip rails and a height-adjustable seat, which is ideal for me, I really do miss my bath. If my bathroom supplier had told me about baths that lower you into the water, I would have snapped up the idea, even if it was a more costly design.” And Lynn is not alone. Over 80% of the group replaced their bath with a walk-in shower or wetroom, with many not being made aware of other, safetyconscious products when purchasing their new bathroom. Lynn adds, “My advice to anyone looking to install a bathroom suitable for someone with a disability is, don’t be too hasty and consider all the options. If retailers can help you with these decisions, you’re sure to find the perfect solution for you.”

irm believers that a bathroom should reflect your personality, and not your disability, leading bathroom manufacturer Pressalit Care is focused on designing attractive bathroom solutions for the lessable that don’t cost the earth. Its new PLUS track system ticks all the boxes. Designed to ensure greater independence for the user, the new system - which benefits from soft, rounded edges - features a wall-mounted track that allows the easy movement of bathroom elements. The horizontal track makes it possible to move products along the wall, while the vertical track enables easy height adjustment. Designed to adapt to the shape and size of your bathroom, several elements can be fitted safely onto the track including basins, shower seats, toilets and arm supports. Elements within the system also benefit from a new lever lock that secures them firmly in place and allows easy movement. For added safety and easy manoeuverability, the shallow ergonomic design of the wash basin gives seated users the leg-room they need, and the shaped support arms (that can be folded against the wall when not in use) provide a sense of security for seated users, while also facilitating the task of transferring to and from wheelchairs. The flexibility of the PLUS system is also reflected in the wide choice of colours available. Elements including grab rails, toilet seats and back rests are available in a range of subtle and intense colours which not only creates a stylish bathroom but also assists visually impaired users around the room. eople are not made the same, so why should all bathrooms be made the same? This becomes even more important in the case of accessible bathing, where end users may require a bespoke solution to enable them to get the most out of bathing and showering. When accessibility becomes an issue, mainstream products can pose barriers that prevent people from enjoying the full benefits of bathing and showering. Forward-thinking organisations in the accessible bathing market are continually striving to develop new and innovative solutions, with products coming a long way from the ‘clinical’ looking solutions of the past. They now boast features including stunning glass screens, flexible and comprehensive shower door systems and stylish walk-in baths that are every bit as appealing from a design perspective as they are practical. What’s more, they can all be tailored to suit a varied range of requirements and personal preferences. Joanna Talbot, Sales and Marketing Manager for Eurocare, has seen the demand for accessible bathing systems rocket. “From our experience in the industry, we know what the market is looking for. More often than not, people are looking for a stylish, flexible and practical long-term solution that enables them to enjoy bathing or showering in an environment which has been designed and built around their current and future needs.” With many people simply not aware of the extent to which an accessible bathroom can be tailored, flexible design and forward-thinking product innovation are critical. Wetrooms remain popular, although cost can be a barrier. Thanks to innovative and flexible wet floor formers and stunning glass, in a range of fixed screens, sliding and stable configurations, even the smallest of bathrooms can be transformed into an attractive space that is also highly user friendly. Showers are gaining popularity, and advances in the design and manufacture of shower trays, mean that

accessible showering can still be an option even when floors cannot be breached or when space is at a premium. And with a vast array of doors and enclosure options, including half- and full-height panels, bifold and bi-part doors, the choices for creating a bathroom design that delivers on both aesthetics and practicality are almost limitless. For many people, a bath represents the ultimate in relaxation and indulgence but when mainstream solutions present obstacles that can take away the pleasures of bathing, good design that is led by an indepth understanding of the issues people are facing becomes vital to creating walk-in baths that appeal to the end user, both visually and on a practical level. Joanna adds, “As well as offering the lowest threshold baths currently available in the UK, our range includes walk-in baths with wide opening doors, slip-resistant bases, no hazardous operating devices and a range of full-length and compact options that would not look out of place in a mainstream bathroom.”

But a customised bathroom doesn’t stop there. From thermostatically controlled taps to hydrotherapy systems, toughened or tinted glass, grab rails to screens, bath rails, seats, screens and infill boxes - the opportunities for creating a bespoke accessible bathroom are endless. Joanna adds, “We work hard to maintain our position at the forefront of the design and innovation in the sector, constantly developing our product range to deliver systems that will meet the needs of an ageing population and help our customers impress their customers with the most comprehensive and inspiring range of products on the market today.”

raditional neutral tiles will always be a popular and robust choice for many and with the introduction of heavily textured and micro-patterned styles, they have never been more appealing. But what about adding a splash of colour to proceedings? Once a dramatic statement that only interior designers dared to experiment with, sales for coloured tiles are on the rise and a must in any retailer’s display. Darren Clanford, Creative Director of Johnson Tiles, says that many consumers, although still apprehensive about the use of colour, are learning to incorporate it into their homes to reflect their individual style. “Instead of a feature wall, bright tiles can be used in conjunction with neutral colours and classic white for a more toned-down, tranquil feel.” The colour trend doesn’t stop there. Sarah Downs, Marketing Co-ordinator of Tilers UK, believes that new and colourful bathroom themes are the reason behind the trend. Sarah adds, “With so many quality tiling products on the market today, we’re seeing a growing number of people renovating their bathrooms. Whilst many don’t want to buy an entire bathroom suite, colourful tiles and bathroom accessories are becoming an economical way of revamping an old bathroom and bring it back to life.”

Don’t be afraid of a little colour. Johnson Tiles’ Middle-Eastern inspired Arabesque range offers subtle geometric colours and elegant style. tyle and practicality rarely go hand in hand but shower enclosure manufacturers are striving to create the perfect balance. Designed to emphasise space, shower enclosures take pride and place in many of today’s modern bathrooms. But why are they so popular? Well, with the average bathroom size getting smaller, offering space saving designs is key for any seller. Thanks to flexible pivot doors and hinged panels, shower enclosures can easily be installed into the most challenging of room types and help to make the most out of awkward corners that may well have previously been the home of an indoor plant or laundry basket. With several unique designs on the market, frameless enclosures in particular offer a super-stylish and minimalist feel and create an illusion of more space. Designed with safety glass as standard, the customer will have piece of mind when buying a shower enclosure.

Shower manufacturer and designer Roman Showers has revamped its Embrace range of shower enclosures and bathrooms screens. New to the range is the option of an Embrace Pivot Door, with a Neo-Angle Panel Kit. This has been driven by requests from the manufacturer's customers, who are increasingly looking for this shape as a design solution. A Neo-Angle Pivot Door offers space saving benefits as it sits discreetly in the corner of the room and the door doesn't fully open out, due to the offset pivot pin. They have become a popular installation choice where homeowners have a limited and unusual space to work with. 01325 311318 www.roman-showers.com

Designed to complement the rising demand for wetrooms and low shower trays, the Beam range of semiframeless shower enclosures from Mira Showers, combines both prestige styling and value for money. With an increased height of 1.9m from the top of the tray, the stylish enclosures are also tall enough to obviate the obstruction possible when a traditional height enclosure is ‘dropped’ to the floor or set on a low tray. For clean and easy installation, each wall profile is adjustable to up to 29mm, while the doors are supplied ‘un-handed’, meaning they are easily reversible for left and right hand opening. 0844 571 5000 www.mirashowers.co.uk

The UK shower enclosure market has undergone some tremendous changes over the last decade but space still matters. Shower manufacturers have responded with the development of higher doors, lower trays and wider doors. Merlyn Showering has designed its most spacious enclosure yet; the Hinge Door with two inline and two side panels from the Glass by Merlyn range. With a tray size up to 1900mm and a height of 2013mm it really does offer a large and comfortable showering experience. 00353 56 779 1555 www.merlynshowering.com

here's a lot to be said for working with well-established companies companies with a good reputation and a long history of producing to consistently high standards. If you need a complete drainage system for level access showers, there are few companies to rival Dallmer's expertise and range. Best known for its CeraLine shower channels, Dallmer, was founded in Germany in 1913 and even today, three generations of the Dallmer family own, lead and work in the company. A master engraver, Johannes Dallmer grew his fledgling business, and his son, Helmut, expanded into tools for plastic moulding, then into plastic mouldings themselves. The 1960s saw the development of an innovative range of sink traps and floor gulleys which were an instant success. The company grew rapidly into one of the leading suppliers of drainage products, using materials as diverse as polyethylene, polypropylene, ABS and polyamid, with gratings in stainless steel. By the 1990s, now under the directorship of Johannes Dallmer (Jnr), grandson of the founder, Dallmer turned its attention towards distribution in Britain. John Purser, a longtime friend of the Dallmer family with an in-depth knowledge of supplying drainage products around the world created Dallmer Ltd and, coupled with Dallmer's quality and willingness to adapt its products to suit the needs of the British market, it proved a winning combination - and it's a combination which continues to grow year on year, even in today's tough market conditions. In its 100th year, despite atrocious weather conditions in Frankfurt, Dallmer's latest ranges found success at ISH 2013. Says John Purser, "We had a really good reception for our new ranges at Frankfurt. Those products will be engineered for British installation conditions and trickled into our range here in the second half of 2013." The Dallmer range includes everything from drain systems for under-tile waterproofing and shower channel systems to pipework accessories, traps and connectors, anti-flood valves, backflow prevention systems - and fire protection systems. There's even a range of electronic controls for urinals. A new catalogue is in preparation.
