The Marble & Granite Centre Ltd (MGCL) will be launching its new hard surface material Lapitec in March. Unlike many man-made materials, no resin or other raw material obtained through petroleum processing is used in its manufacture. The absence of resin makes it heat resistant and ideal for worktops and under floor heating. The surface is also lightweight and can be used as cladding for ventilated facades. 01895 820 883 www.themarbleandgranitecentre.co.uk

Needing only a small space on either side, the Öko xxliner is available for narrow kitchen cabinets with widths from 300mm and can be installed underneath worksurface areas, independent of the sink cabinet. Special container variants have been developed for the waste separation system that unite maximum volume with minimum space requirements. Combined with the existing container programme, this will allow three-way separation for carcass widths of 600mm and offer a total volume of 91 litres. 0049 5272 60101 www.vauth-sagel.com

PLAYING WITH PAINTS The widespread acceptance of foil finishes may have taken a toll on painted doors but painted finishes have a lot to offer.

I

t's probably quite true that décor foils dominate the doors market but prior to the advent of foils, and long back in the history of cabinet-making, a painted finish was considered desirable, practical and, quite often, more upmarket than even a wood finish. In times gone by, many a farmhouse kitchen was treated to a painted finish and even today, interior designers catering for the well-heeled offer their clients custom-applied painted, waxed, dragged, rag-rolled and even ornate Trompe L'Oeil finishes. Whilst these highly specialised finishes are largely the domain of a high end niche sector, modern day materials and production techniques are making painted finishes accessible to a much wider audience - and their popularity is undeniable. The range of finishes spans matt and silk to high gloss in practically any colour or shade, while clear lacquers and whitewash effects make patination a practical option for those who prefer the antiqued look. Doors and drawer fronts are painted with either a waterbased lacquer or a solvent-based lacquer. According to Mark Schubert of Schubert Technical Services, “Water-based technology has improved vastly over the last few years but solvent-based coatings are still the primary carrier for kitchen doors and drawer fronts. Colour, UV stability, lay down and forced curing mean that these days the consumer has a real choice when deciding on a new kitchen.” The options available to consumers have certainly never been wider with an increasing number of metallic finishes in stunning golds, bronzes and silvers complementing cool, neutral unicolours and striking accent shades. Continues Mark, “A customer can (within reason!) have any colour he or she wants. There’s no accounting for taste sometimes though, with some weird and wacky painted finishes available.” Modern technology enables manufacturers to apply custom paint finishes more easily than customising foil finished fascias, although Mark cautions, “With certain PU and polyester lacquers, the pot life of the coating needs to be taken into consideration. Once mixed, some coatings have a 6 hour pot life, so batch production and planning ahead with regards colour changes are advisable.” With products like Hygenilac it's even possible to include anti-bacterial properties. “Actually most major manufacturers of paints have an additive that can be added for this biocide property,” adds Mark. “Furniture manufacturers supplying into the care industry and the NHS use this lacquer additive quite a bit.” Tactile properties have become an important décor trend in recent times. Very few wet sprayed finishes provide a truly textured surface - most lend themselves to a smooth surface but there are specialist coatings in the plastic and metal industries which would make it possible to apply a textured finish. Time will tell but, in their quest to provide consumers with something different, we could yet see texture creeping into the fascia market.

A budget-conscious take on a classic shaker design, Burbridge’s Marlow kitchen now includes 15 new colours from its painted timber palette. oose your hue Think you know all there is to know about painted kitchens? With new paint technology and advanced manufacturing techniques, you might want to take a closer look…

Following the success of its best-selling Lucente and Lusso high gloss kitchen collections, TKC has launched hand painted versions of both ranges. Lucente Hand Painted (shown) and Lusso Hand Painted feature an on-trend matt finish and are available to order in either 10 ontrend stock colours or in any bespoke colour of choice. The new ranges are set to appeal to customers seeking to create a truly individual look for the kitchen, often achieved through mixing high gloss and matt finishes to stunning effect. 0161 336 3636 www.tkcomponents.co.uk

“The latest painted kitchens have come a long way since the bespoke painted kitchen era of the 1980s. Thanks to modern technology and cutting edge manufacturing processes, there is now a good selection of luxurious painted kitchens in an affordable price bracket that are designed to last and retain their charm for many years to come. “Ongoing advancements in innovative kitchen furniture technology means that high quality and finely tuned designs are available even at entry level; doors are highly durable and made to last and this is an important factor with today’s cautious consumer spending. The painted fascia, whether this is a painted timber or a painted-effect using a vinyl wrapped or a wood grain veneer, provides the perfect base to help create individual kitchens at mid market prices. Paint technology has moved on considerably, providing a harder wearing finish, and there is now very little difference between a quality painted timber and an overpainted foil. “Mixtures of colour and finish have become very important in helping to depict zones in openplan kitchen living as well as help to create a personalised and bespoke look. In terms of colours, it’s all about soft matt colours, and clean and simple lines. Mixing and matching shades and textures are very popular, and the natural and muted colour schemes remain the bestsellers. Creams and ivories have the ability to co-ordinate with so many interiors and it’s the longevity that many are attracted to, especially in these austere times. Earthy shades, greys, greens and blues have also evolved from this theme, often complemented with a hint of real wood - perhaps a solid timber work top or an accent timber door - or a splash of vibrant colour. The world really is your oyster with painted kitchens.”

hen you picture a painted kitchen, what do you see? Not so long ago, the painted kitchen was seen as a traditional finish for those opting for a rustic, country-style kitchen. Quintessentially English, it scored more highly on its homely appeal than its design innovation. But today, the painted kitchen is experiencing something of a renaissance, with UK consumers looking to create nostalgia and warmth in their homes. To work with the rustic sawn look, wood panel manufacturer Egger has launched a revolutionary new range of MFC boards that are virtually indistinguishable from a painted timber finish. Exclusive to the UK market, the ST27 range, which is ideal for carcasses, end panels, plinths and doors, can be used to replicate the highly-popular painted finish at a fraction of the price. It also offers a lowmaintenance alternative to timber without the time-consuming operations that cutting and working with veneers involves. The innovative range, which offers an underlying oak-grain design by using a new texture plate during manufacture, comprises ten décors in neutral heritage uni-colours, as well as a painting-grade option - effectively a primed

board that the customer can paint in any colour of their choice. “At the higher end of the market, leading manufacturers are offering a bespoke approach to design. With Egger’s ST27 range, you have the ability to paint according to requirements, giving those manufacturers with painting facilities a wide scope to keep stocks low and produce according to demand,” explains Nick McClughin, Head of Marketing for Egger UK. To add to the designs, matching 0.8mm edging and a 2mm painting-grade option are available to spray any colour, offering a simple approach to the creation of a timeless, highvalue look. “There isn’t really anything like this in the market at the moment, hence the buzz around its launch,” explains Nick. “Our customers are excited about the new range as it provides them with a product that replicates the look of painted timber or veneer at a price point that may allow them to enter a new market segment, enhance or protect margins, compete at a higher price point or gain market share.” For more information, or samples, contact the Egger ZOOM® hotline on 0845 606 8888 or visit www.egger.co.uk KITCHEN AND BATHROOM JOURNAL FEBRUARY 2014 • 11

With attention firmly on water saving for 2014, we look at some of the most innovative washing machines currently on the market.

“When selling, get to know your customer - understand their needs and reflect this in the products you show them. Sales should be benefits driven - inform them how much they can save per year. This allows consumers to make choices not necessarily driven by the price of the appliance, but based on the things that are most important to them.” Ros Collins - Senior Product Manager, Bosch.

Bosch’s first self-dosing washing machine, the A+++ Logixx iDos, features an 8kg capacity, VarioPerfect function, time delay, time remaining and a large LED display to simplify use. This trend will continue to grow, as the appearance of these products is now just as important as performance.” Joan Fraser - Product development and training manager, Smeg UK.

The first heat pump washer dryer... “A tumble dryer with heat pump technology uses up to 40% less energy than a standard ‘A’ rated model by recycling air and using lower drying temperatures. Unlike traditional tumble dryers, heat pump dryers use a heat exchange unit that re-circulates the air within a closed system to reduce energy loss.” Joe Oram - Head of Product Line, Laundry and Home Comfort, AEG Electrolux.

In 2014, AEG is set to launch the world’s first ever heat pump washer dryer, the ÖKOKombi (shown left). Designed to be up to 40% more efficient than the next best A rated washer dryer, it will continue to maintain a high washing and drying performance. Next year, AEG will also introduce the ÖKOMix 9kg washing machine, delivering an outstanding energy rating of A+++-50%. The ÖKOMix can achieve this energy rating thanks to a reasonable cycle time of 3 hours 50 minutes. 08445 611 611 www.aeg.co.uk

Beko’s WDA91440W A rated washer dryer uses ambient cold air, drawn in through the perforated vent on the front of the machine, to cool the condenser. This is then blown out through the back of the machine, a technique that can potentially reduce householders’ water bills. Incorporating clever air cool technology, it also has the capability to wash and dry a 6kg load all in one cycle and clean a full 9kg load in less than 39 minutes. 0845 600 4904 www.beko.co.uk

Market Insight: “Appliance technology is developing at an ever-increasing rate, and it is having a very positive affect on the market. We are living in a fast-changing world, where people are increasingly dependent on technology to make life more convenient and everyday tasks easier, and so manufacturers are investing heavily in developing technology to ensure the consumer is keen to trade up. “The recession has resulted in consumers buying less as incomes have to stretch further and further; however, in an effort to reduce monthly outgoings, homeowners are much more willing to invest in appliances that offer the latest technology which make their lives easier and guarantee minimal resource use. The recession has also made it more difficult for consumers to move house, which is why the mantra of ‘improve don’t move’

has become so popular, as consumers refresh and revive their current living areas. These trends have helped to boost consumer demand for technologically led appliances, and we expect this to continue throughout 2014. “Technology that ensures minimal resource use, and therefore offers the consumer savings on utility bills is very attractive to consumers, and this is something that they are willing to invest in. Alongside this, the consumer is busier than ever and is working longer hours; we are therefore seeing consumers attracted to intelligent ovens that offer a host of pre-set recipes and intuitive control that monitors and adapts the cooking process without the consumer having to think about it. “With this in mind it is also anticipated that the future will see increasing sales of appliances that

contribute long-term to energy and resource saving in the home – such as induction hobs. Induction hobs are almost twice as fast, very efficient and incredibly safe when compared to electric or gas cooking. Speed has been king for a long time in many different aspects of everyday life, and now there is an improved method to allow for quicker cooking, saving more time and energy and contributing to the reduction of household energy bills.”

We talk to Andy Vaughan, kbb’s brand director, as this year’s show draws near...

T

it’s showtime!

When? Sunday 2nd - Wednesday 5th March 2014. Where? NEC Birmingham, UK. Tickets? Register for free tickets online at kbb.co.uk Exhibitors? Over 300 brands, manufacturers and suppliers. Visit kbb.co.uk for a full exhibitor list.

here is somewhat of a buzz around this year’s kbb Birmingham, with rumors of belly dancers, ghostbuster inspired antics and, of course, a few famous faces thrown in for good measure. And with the show seeing a 10% rise in stand numbers on 2012, it would seem that the UK KBB market is finally getting back on its feet again. kbb’s Brand Director, Andy Vaughan, explains more: “This year’s kbb exhibition is set to be the best yet. We’re currently looking at 70% kitchens and 30% bathrooms by the metre squared compared to 85% kitchens and 15% bathrooms in 2010. To achieve this, the team has gone back to basics. We’re listening to our customers to find out what they want from the show and making changes where we see fit. It really is that simple. “For most, a show like this needs to show a return on investment and be invaluable to all taking part. To make this happen, we’ve been proposing smaller stand sizes that highlight new products, instead of large stands that exhibit entire ranges. I believe this to be one of the main factors when looking at this year’s numbers. Smaller stands also allow visitors to visit more stands and explore the sector more widely - benefiting the industry as a whole.” As well as a host of new British exhibitors confirmed, there has also been an increased interest from European brands that, in the past, have not exhibited in the UK. Andy adds, “It has been said that the KBB sector is growing more quickly in the UK than in Germany, so well-known European brands are looking to exhibit at the only KBB-dedicated exhibition in the UK. This in itself is creating a buzz. Whilst I can’t give too much away, not only will visitors be some of the first people to see the exciting new European trends set to hit the UK market, expect to find other unique European influence in the aisles. It really is going to be an exciting show.”

"Handleless" is state-of-the-art when it comes to the latest fashion in kitchen design. Now MatrixArt from German manufacturer Nolte Küchen is here as a major innovation for 2014. The kitchen is 100% handle-free by incorporating the trim into the carcase. But in true Nolte Küchen style, there are more options to achieve "the look" depending on taste and budget. kbb Birmingham will have them all side by side. It began with MatrixLine, looking like a handle-free kitchen but featuring a top-mounted trim on the reverse of the fronts. Taking the handleless approach one step further, the best-selling ALPHA LACK incorporated a J-profile – with quality lacquering at highly competitive price. For 2014, a panel was added to the range, providing a continuous trim round the sides of base units and islands. Now MatrixArt is launched as the “true” handleless design offering all the design benefits and first class aesthetics. The new handleless range covers all major décors and finishes, and is available from Price Group 1 to 8. Extras include ambience lighting in the upper handle trim, with new 25mm worktop thickness and matching panels round the sides of units. These finer details make MatrixArt a homogenous, well-conceived design with great planning variety.

let it shine

Simon Collyns, Marketing Director of Symphony Group, tells us why it’s time for British manufacturing to shine.

2

In 2008, Symphony moved to a purpose-built, state-of-theart manufacturing and distribution facility in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. Together with its Rotherham factory, it has over 750,000 sq ft of manufacturing and warehousing capacity.

Driven by a quest for unmatched service and quality, Symphony has invested in systems and technology to help it deliver ‘right first time’ service - every time.

014 is definitely the time for us to be promoting our British heritage and supporting our extensive retailer network, to differentiate them from their competition,” declares Simon Collyns, Marketing Director of Symphony. “As a manufacturer, we realise that we have to set ourselves apart from our competitors, and we need to push the points that make us different.” But in such a competitive market, what has made the 40-year-old, privately owned company a success? Its plan is to do what it does best - continue to focus on high quality customer service and expand its product line to bring the latest on trend finishes, textures and designs to the UK market. “But there is one huge thing that stands us out from the crowd - we’re a British manufacturer,” explains Simon. “We are in a marketplace with Germans and Italians who historically consumers have perceived to have a higher end product - this is something Symphony believe to be untrue - and we need to stand our ground.” It would seem that is exactly what the British manufacturing industry has done. A new generation on British manufacturers have been born and they’re keen to promote themselves and support the ‘Made in Britain’ campaign. Simon adds, “It seems that the tide is

32 • KITCHEN AND BATHROOM JOURNAL FEBRUARY 2014

turning and British design and innovation is starting to lead, not follow, our European counterparts.” “The best example of this is our new Signature by Symphony range,” adds Simon. Last year, the Barnsley-based company introduced a British-made, high end kitchen range - a milestone in British design. “We saw a gap in the marketplace for a bespokestyle of offering which gives consumers choices and options in personalising their kitchen.” Using the latest manufacturing techniques, including laser edging, the range offers high quality products which have been tried and tested to last. The reverse side of the coin is that Britain as a whole is seeing not just success at home but increasing demand for our British made and designed kitchens in export markets too. “In 2013 we saw a continued expansion of Symphony showrooms from the Middle East to Russia displaying our Signature, Linear and Gallery brands hallmarked as ‘Made in Britain’”, explains Simon. “Focusing on the unique selling points of British quality and design, we’re going from strength to strength. So yes, it is time for British manufacturing to shine, not just here in the UK but around the world!” 01226 446000 www.symphony-group.co.uk

Market Insight: What are the UK's biggest strengths in manufacturing? In the case of Ellis Furniture our biggest strength is our people. We believe in a healthy apprenticeship scheme and we've had people working their way through the ranks for over 50 years. Such individuals are invaluable; they understand British manufacturing and understand the products. Was Vince Cable right when he said we're beginning to see a repatriation of the supply chain to Britain? I think that we have seen some repatriation of manufacturing from the far East to Britain, as companies have had its fingers burnt realising that whilst they may get some cost savings, lead times can be a significant issue. However I would say that this has had little if any impact on our business, as it tends to relate to commodity products. For us to benefit, we’d like to see further repatriation of the supply chain from Eastern Europe and

for the government to promote British buying, particularly in the public sector. What challenges has your business faced, and how have you remained resilient? As a 120-year-old family business we’ve faced some tough challenges, ranging from wars and recessions, to rapidly changing technology and an ever-evolving change in furniture styles and fashions. A key to our successful rise through these challenges has been to maintain a strong foothold in a variety of different sectors including consumer, business and publicly funded markets. This approach has helped us avoid the ‘eggs in one basket’ scenario and meant that lean times in one market haven’t had such a significant impact on our overall business. Training and skills are fundamental to manufacturing. Are we pointing in the right direction? Yes, I think British manufacturers are the very best at training and we take that part of our job very seriously. Ellis Furniture continues to invest in these areas so we can pass

on our skills and experience to the next generation of cabinetmakers and woodworking machinists, and to ensure British manufacturing retains the skills that are envied across the world. What are your future investments in the UK and being British? In the past year or so we’ve invested more than £1.5m in our business, which is reaping great benefits for all our customers. We intend to continue to invest in all areas of our operation. We have an ongoing investment plan including distribution vehicles, IT systems, NPD programme and infrastructure.

Bathrooms “For UK retailers, British-made product orders are more flexible. This means that instead of waiting for a container to arrive from the Far East, we can fulfill orders within 7-10 days. Therefore retailers can be flexible with stock orders and never miss a sale.” John Schofield - Sales and Marketing Director, JT.

Proud to be British, Ellis Furniture has been committed to the KBB industry for over 120 years. Ask The Ex The launch of its next generation of shower pumps puts Salamander at the cutting edge of shower pump technology. Also available in brass, the new CT range has integrated design features that make it impressively quiet and efficient. A more compact size allows greater flexibility when positioning as part of an existing system and, therefore, easier fitting. The distinctive HomeBoost housing has been adopted for a “one family” look and technology symbols make product selection much easier. 0191 516 2002 www.salamanderpumps.co.uk

PICK OF THE PUMPS

When teamed with a mixer shower, the T550i pump can provide a high-pressure flow of up to 1.2 bar if you have a gravity-fed low pressure system. The pump can be hidden away in an airing cupboard or under the bath, creating more space to enjoy a luxurious, powerful showering experience. 024 7634 4441 www.tritonshowers.co.uk

Flo-mate from Stuart Turner offers a simple solution to boost incoming mains water pressure without the need for a cold water break tank and is designed to be connected directly to the incoming mains. At times when there is insufficient mains water pressure, it’s designed to ensure that the pump will deliver an additional 1.5 bar to any existing mains pressure at a maximum flow rate of 12 l/min, meeting the requirements of most combination boilers. It also features a built in bypass, which means that when the mains pressure exceeds 1.5 bar, the performance is not restricted. 01491 572655 www.stuart-turner.co.uk

We asked Roger Powell, Business Development Manager at Stuart Turner, for guidance and his six easy steps to selecting the right pump.

A

ccording to the Bathroom Manufacturers’ Association “the British bathroom is going places”. Today’s bathroom requires a good deal more thought in its design and whilst there is no doubt that a desire for quality and luxury are still top of the list, sustainability and water efficiency also factor in the consumers’ decision making process. Bathroom manufacturers design products with sustainability and water regulations in mind but if the domestic water system fails to maintain sufficient dynamic (working) pressure, then a new tap or shower may simply not meet the performance expectations of the householder. It should be remembered that many modern bathrooms are installed in properties which have gravity fed systems that simply cannot cope with the demands being made on it by a family when a new or additional bathroom or shower room is added. So where do pumps feature in all of this and how do you select the correct pump? The most obvious answer is water volume and flow. When adding luxury-style products to an existing property, care must be taken to ensure that the water supply, both hot and cold, can cope with the demands made by the various appliances. No consumer wants to spend money on a new bathroom only to find that the products don’t perform as desired. In circumstances where the pressure is not sufficient, the support of a pump may be required. However, it is important to remember that boosting the supply will not increase the volume of water used, but the increased pressure it provides will compensate for the reduced flow and maintain the “showering experience”. Selecting the correct pump isn’t as daunting as it may seem. Just follow these simple steps (shown opposite).

Expert: Pump Advice #1 Assess. Identify your system. There are four systems used in the UK: open vented gravity fed, unvented stored water, combination boiler and thermal store. UK water regulations state that a maximum of 12 litres per minute can be pumped directly from the mains, meaning that only open vented systems can have pumps installed directly into the gravity system. Where there is a need to boost low incoming mains pressure, for example to a combination boiler, you need to consider a specifically designed mains boost pump. These pumps are designed to boost pressure without exceeding the flow limit. However as the pump will be delivering potable water it is important that a fully WRAS approved product is used.

#2 Size of pump. This will be determined by pressure requirements. How much pressure is needed to drive water to the taps and showers? As a guide, 1.5-2.0 bar pumps is recommended for low pressure taps and showers and 2.0-4.0 bar pumps where higher flow rates are required, for example, in a shower system with full body jets.

#3 Twin or single pump?

#4 Universal or Standard? Universal pumps: fully automatic, work under positive and negative head conditions, are suitable for installation into open vented hot and cold water systems and do not require gravity flow of water to start the pump. Standard pumps: operate only under positive head conditions, are suitable for installation into open vented hot and cold systems and require a minimum gravity flow of approximately 0.6 litres per minute.

#5 Choose the best location. All pumps are more efficient when pushing rather than pulling water. If possible, your pump should be installed on the floor next to the hot water cylinder, with the exception of a mains boost pump, which is typically located where the water supply enters the property, usually under the kitchen sink.

Twin pumps are most commonly used; this is because they boost both hot and cold water supplies. A single pump is used to boost a single water supply, hot, cold, or pre-mixed. A single pump can be used to pump blended water (as in a combination boiler) from a shower valve to the shower outlet for example.

#6 Action. Choose a reputable brand from a manufacturer that has a proven track record for quality and reliability. Make sure their products are made to high quality standards and are 100% tested before leaving the factory, and look for features such as low noise levels, antivibration feet and safe extra low voltage (SELV) controls for built-in safety. Also look at the guarantee and after-sales service provided – the longer the guarantee, the more confidence the manufacturer has in its product. And finally, don’t forget to register your pump with the manufacturer.

Industry Insight: A new study from an online bathroom retailer has revealed that the popularity of the bath is in decline, as order trends and customer feedback in the UK have revealed a 54% decrease in bath orders in the past 12 months; compared to a 72% increase in orders of shower enclosures. An accompanying study has also revealed that three-quarters of British home owners would opt to include a shower in their home over a bath because it a shower is deemed more effective and quicker to use. In addition to the poll, UK Bathrooms also looked at order trends and site search statistics, which revealed a 142% increase for searches relating to ‘shower enclosures’ over the past two months. By contrast, there was an 80% decline in site searches relating specifically to baths over the same period.

Peter Gregg, director of UKBathrooms.com, adds, “It seems that we may need to rethink our name if order trends currently continue. The bath has long been the focal point of the bathroom, hence the name. But should it become the shower room? The pace of modern life means that many of us just don’t have the time to run a bath and enjoy a traditional soak in the tub. These days it’s more a case of in and out the shower as we dash off to work. It’s a shame that we no longer have the same free time, but all aspect of life needs to evolve, which includes the bathroom! That said, bath tubs can look incredibly stylish in any bathroom - adding a traditional and classy twist. Anyone lucky enough to be able to fit both in a bathroom should consider doing so, to ensure all tastes and needs are catered for.”
