“Induction hobs are becoming the fastest growing sector in the hob market, claiming about 20% of all electric hob and 10% of total hob sales.“ Maurizio Severgnini - Managing Director Built in Division, Hoover Candy UK.

The 80cm 4-zone AEG MaxiSense® induction hob is designed to automatically control the hood according to your hob settings, keeping the kitchen fresh while you are concentrating on the food. 1200 and 1500mm wide kitchens can be turned into a modular Studioline kitchen that integrates wall cupboards and protective wall-panels.

The installation of Elfin’s mini kitchens is easy. Simply plug in the fridge, hotplates and oven, then fix the tap tails and waste.

Bob Andrew, Managing Director at Elfin Kitchens, talks compact.

small and mighty I

n many British homes space comes at a premium, so it comes as little surprise that smart design has quickly become make or break for small dwellings. Bob Andrew, Managing Director at Elfin Kitchens, explains how an Elfin kitchen can give a property an edge without compromising space. “We have seen the market for compact and mini kitchens grow in the last few years,” explains Bob. “Spatial efficiency is important but when space is limited it can be challenging to meet the requirements of the homeowner.” To achieve a highly functional yet visually appealing kitchen design, the Colchester-based design team have worked to incorporate storage, cooking and cooling facilities into a nifty space-saving unit that remains affordable. “You can choose a mini compact kitchen from our Standard, Contract, Economy or Stainless steel range. Tailored to your exact requirements and delivered

within three days, each design comes in 900, 1000, 1200 or 1500mm widths to fit even the tightest floor space, corners and alcoves,” says Bob. Each power-coated steel carcase is fitted with branded appliances, including an A+ rated 110l fridge with freezer compartment, a sink, monobloc tap and drainer as standard. And for designs over 1000mm wide, the option of a microwave, combination or convection oven is also available. The illusion of space has also been considered in the design. Bob explains, “Our compact kitchens are usually white because the bright colour reflects light better. When installed against a light wall-colour, it can also create a seamless space that can feel roomier.” There is also an option to integrate wall cupboards above the 1200 and 1500mm Elfin units that creates a contemporary modular Studioline design. Installation isn’t a problem either. You merely plug the appliances in then fix the tap tails and waste. It really is that simple.

6 • KITCHEN AND BATHROOM JOURNAL JUNE 2014

Bob adds, “With such a variety of applications and the trend pointing towards space design over space profusion, the market for compact kitchen design is really hotting up.” For more information on Elfin’s compact kitchens call 01206 545700 or visit www.elfinkitchens.co.uk

I

t takes me longer to get it out of the box than it does for me to put it together,” explains Steve Borrett, owner of Great Yarmouth-based D&G Kitchens, when asked how easy Unilin’s ClicBox is to use. “I’ve never come across a product like it. It's so quick and easy to assemble, anyone could do it.” It’s not every day you hear a skilled kitchen fitter with more than 25 years experience in the trade tell you how simple part of his job is but then again, it’s not every day you are confronted with the ease and simplicity of a Unilin ClicBox.

As you walk around D&G Kitchens’ 55m2 showroom, it’s clear to see that the independent kitchen retailer and fitter knows a thing or two about kitchen manufacturing. He’s in demand. So much so, his diary is full for the next five months and, relying solely on word of mouth, he has won orders for more than 20 kitchens and 10 bedrooms in the last 12 months. But, for someone who works predominantly single-handedly on all his projects, where does he find the time? “In this line of work, time is a valuable commodity. I have no time for gimmicks,” admits Steve. “I like to do a job well. I KITCHEN AND BATHROOM JOURNAL JUNE 2014 • 13

ticking the box openly tell people that I don’t make cheap kitchens, I make good-quality kitchens, so I’m sure it’ll come as no surprise when I say I always err on the side of caution when it comes to working with new products.” With the housing market on the move again, Steve didn’t want to turn work away but he desperately needed to find a way of saving time so he could capitalise on the upturn in enquiries. “I’d been manufacturing my own kitchen carcases for over 15 years,” he explains. “It was labour intensive but with nothing on the market that could rival the quality and effectiveness of my own carcases, I had no choice but to continue making them myself.” After seeing a demonstration of Unilin’s ClicBox at the end of last year during the May Design Series, Steve couldn’t resist giving it a go himself and in under a minute, he had created his very first ClicBox. “I was seriously impressed,” he recalls. “Not only was it quick to assemble, it was just as sturdy as my made-to-order carcases and offered my customers choice and flexibility in their designs.” ClicBox also ticked the box when it came to quality. “I was surprised how much thought had gone into the design of this product,” he adds. “Even the wall units had been made 30mm wider than a standard base unit allowing for a full-size 14 • KITCHEN AND BATHROOM JOURNAL JUNE 2014

dinner plate to be stored easily. It’s this type of thing that gives me an edge over the competition.” Steve’s also impressed with the flexibility ClicBox gives him. Proud to offer design without limits, he needed a carcase that reflected the limitless possibilities his customers expected. The smart drilling pattern, which has been designed to match a range of fitting suppliers, means he can still offer four or five drawers and drawer liners can be added without the need to drill extra holes, providing customers with complete control over their kitchen. And, with help from Unilin’s UK distributor HPP, Steve can order from a range of forty-two cabinet sizes and formats in any colour for next day deliver. Now Steve has time on his side, he’s busy creating a new showroom that includes a ClicBox kitchen display. Without the need to manufacture carcases himself, he’s also had the time to explore new opportunities and opened a new market with a local housing developer. He readily confirms what Unilin, the makers of ClicBox, have been saying for a while: “Thanks to ClicBox, I’m able to spend more time fitting kitchens and less time creating carcases.” And that’s what it’s all about isn’t it? esign is not making beauty,” wrote Louis Kahn, one of the most influential architects of the mid 20th century. “Beauty emerges from selection, affinities, integration, love.” The newly opened Marketing Suite at Decorative Panels Group has undoubtedly been a labour of love. Stunning, beautiful, inspired and inspiring, it is a work of art in its own right; an 8,500ft2 temple of design to which customers old and new have an open invitation. But it is not a sterile environment. Neither is it a museum. It is a place in which to explore and experiment, make different selections, create affinities and integrate them into successful furniture designs of the future. “The Marketing Suite is a showcase of everything we can offer, but not a stale concept,” says Group MD, Guy Metcalfe. “Here, visitors can develop designs into reality in an inspirational environment. Everything is made from our materials. It’s a showcase to the versatility of our products; a working tool to help customers find the right product and partner for their own projects.”

design The moment you step through the entrance door the first impression takes your breath away: surrounded by original design classics, Floss lamps and Le Corbusier armchairs, the Chill Zone is a space befitting the foyer of the most upmarket of luxury hotels. Relax after your journey. Gather your thoughts. And amid icons of great design, prepare to be inspired. On your way to the dp-library and the dp-virtual zone, take a moment to reflect on the words of Thomas J Watson, the man once dubbed The World’s Greatest Salesman, as you pass through the Heritage Zone: “Design,” he wrote, “Must reflect the practical and aesthetic in business but above all...good design must primarily serve people.” The Decorative Panels Group has been serving people with good design in one form or other since 1907. The historical timeline of the company

The dp-library, the dp-virtual zone and the mix & match zone are the creative work centres in the Marketing Suite. Select hard samples from the dplibrary - the entirety of the dp-décor and dp-specialist ranges are represented and the latest dp-development foils are presented on the walls as you enter the dp-virtual zone - and take them through. On an enormous glass screen, using a state-of-the-art projection system, it’s here that you’ll be able to pull all the elements from the dp-library together, drawing from all the designs available and displaying them at actual size in fully-dressed bedroom, kitchen and living room settings. his month’s unveiling of Egger’s eagerly anticipated ZOOM 2014 update sees the introduction of 23 new décors and six completely new textures in its melamine faced chipboard, laminate and edging range. The latest décors include a range of synchronised pore surfaces, where grain and texture are aligned and soft matt and industrial ceramic styles have been designed to create authentic and striking wood reproduction. “The new additions to ZOOM do far more than complement the existing collection, they are truly revolutionary,” explains Nick McClughin, Egger UK’s Head of Marketing. “When we presented our new wood developments to experienced design professionals as part of our NPD process they had difficulty telling them apart,” he adds. Benefiting from less waste in the manufacturing process, better matching of materials and guaranteed availability, Egger’s customers are seeing its products as a cost-effective replacement for veneer and solid wood. Through the introduction of deeper and more realistic textures in designs, and by taking a little more care and attention with the finish, bookmatching and edging detail, products are being introduced into new market areas with the possibility for margin growth. The synchronised pore surfaces - on both sides of the board - tie the décor and the surface texture together perfectly to create a look and feel that’s incredibly close to solid wood and veneer. They have the added advantages of colour consistency over the lifetime of the furniture, as well

touch as being hardwearing and low maintenance. Three new synchronised pore textures in the ZOOM 2014 update have a unique character and range from subtle and elegant to more rustic. The Feelwood Elegance ST27 texture exudes a modern and sophisticated feel whilst demonstrating the beauty and subtleness of nature. The fine, linear, yet natural texture is synchronised with the grain of a chestnut reproduction called Tortona to create an incredibly realistic finish. It is perfect for creating a high value, elegant look in any kitchen, bedroom or bathroom. Feelwood Nature ST28 texture, on the other hand, brings you closer to nature. Knots and planking create a natural feel while the matt texture is paired with the grain of ‘Gladstone Oak’, emphasising the sandblasted character of this décor. With its large grain pattern Feelwood Ambiance ST29 texture is ideal for large applications, the mattgloss finish providing an air of grandeur. Nick adds, “By challenging convention and seeing the product a little differently, our new designs will allow kitchen and bathroom manufacturers to create really exciting, trend-driven designs that offer a premium look for a fraction of the cost and we can’t wait to see the results…” For more information on all the latest décors and surfaces call 01434 602191 or visit www.egger.com

Four further surfaces have been developed which open up four quite different design routes: • Painted Wood ST26 is a subtle texture based on pine with an opaque coating and is ideally suited to neutral uni colours such as a mid grey or white. • The six new décors in Brushed Wood ST36 provide an irregular and very deep texture, combined with a matt appearance very similar to the deeply brushed solid wood furniture. • The Ceramic ST87 texture (shown above) explores a new direction combining concrete and ceramic. The texture can create a contemporary, used look with a striking and industrial feel created by combining the rusty, aged appearance with a ceramic texture. • And the fourth surface, Perfect Matt ST9 texture is well-suited to warm, trendy uni colours.

To emulate this trend, it has re-launched its Brooklands in-frame and Natures Choice lay-on door ranges for 2014. “Choice is key and bespoke offerings are a must when working with respectable retailers, designers and architects,” explains Gareth Atkin, Sales and Marketing Director. Both on-trend door ranges offer 13 different styles that can be sized to order, a choice of 24 standard colours and a paint to order service that is completed in Landau’s new, state-of-the-art drying facility. To offer a complete bespoke solution, custom sizes and 66 standard curves in convex and concave designs and varied dimensions are also available. The diversity of Landau’s door ranges are, in part, due to the company’s strong relationship with Parapan®. The high gloss, solid acrylic, which offers flexibility and endless design capabilities, has long been associated with Landau’s sleek, flowing kitchen designs but more recently, it is being specified for commercial and retail projects thanks to its mirror-like qualities, curve-ability and UV resistance. Available in 18mm thickness for doors, drawers and panels and 4mm for cladding and screens, Parapan® can be cut to bespoke sizes and thermoformed into curves and fitted with a choice of edge treatments and finger pulls, or any style of handle for doors and drawers. Confident in its abilities, Landau is even offering RIBA CPD seminars to prove how successful the product is at creating show-stopping doors and interior designs. Gareth adds, “The business is constantly evolving and we’re investing in the future. This, combined with our strong marketing and social media activities, has future proofed our products and, thanks to strong relationships with our customers, we’ll continue to stay up to date with the latest design trends and manufacturing demands.” For more information call 01482 440680 or visit www.landauparapan.co.uk

The new titanium finish perfectly integrates the hinge into the design of the cabinet conveying a sensation of warmth and at the same time incorporating modern functionality. The colour, new and different compared with the traditional blued or nickel-plated finishes, is less invasive and has a muted sheen. The titanium reflections make this hinge ideal in combination with darker interiors and with the numerous shades of wood available. An exciting array of designs are evolving the geometric theme, often taking them into the realms of optical illusion and hyper-reality. Creating 3D effects by playing with repeating patterns and referencing the work of artists such as Escher and Mondrian, bio-mimicking the octagonal beauty of the hive and using block colour and shape is an engaging new tile trend.

Following the launch of Juan Vidal’s autumn-winter 2014 collection at Russian Fashion Week, the award-winning fashion designer has collaborated with tile manufacturer Peronda Cerámicas to create Victoria. The collection of white body ceramic wall tiles come in a 32 x 59cm format and are available in the three colours used in Juan’s collection of the same name - black, white and red. Margot (pictured) features bold floral patterns with a geometrical relief that adds a sense of volume and movement. www.peronda.com

Hexagonal tiling was popular in the Victorian era for its pleasing symmetry. The style has since enjoyed a renaissance in the 60s, as black and white hexagonal bathroom tiles. Now the hex is back. Trend has launched its glass mosaic Hexagonal Collection, with an initial range of ten semitransparent fused glass colours, enriched with sparkling enamels and aventurine stone. The 35 x 30mm hexagon tiles, which are made using up to 59% post-consumer recycled materials are 5mm thick and supplied in 326 x 350mm sheet sizes. 0800 044 5395 www.trend-group.com

Patterns are back in a big way. Old-school charm and familiar folk themes have never been more popular. Tradition takes a step forward as these contemporary re-workings are conceived not only for their beauty but also for ease of installation, maintenance and long lasting reliability. Paying tribute to a proud artisanal heritage, subtle effects behind a gloss finish and bold, nostalgic designs are leading the way in tile trends.

BCT’s extended V&A Collection pays homage to ornate designs that fuse intricate patterns with rich colours and glazes. e are currently seeing a shift towards open-plan living. The kitchen, dining room and living room are seamlessly merging into one and with this trend showing no sign of slowing down, the need for intelligent light systems that can not only offer adequate lighting as a whole, but that can adapt quickly and easily when walking between room zones, is becoming a growing commodity. Recently investing heavily in its Leeds-based testing laboratory, Sycamore’s wireless lighting control system ticks all the boxes. The flexible design, which has been rigorously tested in its state-of-theart facility, provides all the benefits of a sophisticated and complex system without the need to fully re-wire. This allows it to be used in new installations as well as being a simple retro-fit system for existing installations. Making smart homes a reality, Sycamore’s qualified electronic experts have designed mood lighting configurations that offer the user the ability to recall a scene or mood of lighting at the touch of a button, whilst controlling multiple circuits and lamp types within a domestic environment. The actual control of the circuits can be from wall plate switches that communicate wirelessly with specific receiver modules. There is even the option to create a bridge unit that can be connected to a home router. This allows you to control your lighting from the Sycamore iPhone, iPad and Android apps that have been designed specifically for this product. Digital communication means system integration is easily achievable by linking the lighting to AV, security and home controllers. Garden lighting can also be integrated into the system and for the optimum light setting, LED, fluorescent and halogen lighting can be dimmed using the appropriate wireless module. A full design service and technical back-up is also on hand for piece of mind. For more information call 0113 286 6686 or visit www.sycamorelightingltd.co.uk

The latest lighting solutions for the bathroom.

MARKET INSIGHT We asked HiB’s Marketing Manager, Steve Kaye, what the average consumer understands about bathroom lighting. Is it up to the retailer to make suggestions? “Consumers are becoming increasingly knowledgeable about the aesthetics of bathroom lighting. However, they are not always aware of the safety aspects of bathroom lighting and although things are changing rapidly, many consumers are still discovering the advantages of LED bathroom lighting. Accordingly, retailers still have an important part to play in the specification of bathroom lighting. Consumers can, of course, go online and buy fittings and lamps on the internet but whilst that might be quick and easy, it can’t replace the expertise that an informed, creative retailer can provide. And of course, a retailer can deliver a highly personalised, tailored service. Their lighting suggestions will be based on how the bathroom is to be used, who is going to use it, budget and they will also be able to take into account any installation issues as well.” Should retailers concentrate on particular products or achieving particular effects?

“Retailers need to take on board what sort of lighting scheme the customer wants to achieve and then specify the best fittings for the job. Trying to make it work the other way around is not going to be especially successful. I think it is sensible for retailers and showroom staff to ensure they keep abreast of the latest in bathroom lighting innovation - and to try and use the most up-to-the-minute lamps and fittings wherever they can. It is a fast-moving field and the acceleration of LED technology - and importantly, the increasing affordability of LED lighting - means there’s always something new to see or understand. Ease of installation, energy efficiency and the lighting effects themselves just keep getting better and better – so using the latest products is often a win-win situation for everyone.” What are the most popular lighting looks for the bathroom and what products are required to achieve them? “One area of bathroom lighting that everyone wants to get right is task lighting - so a very popular look is to have some design-led, quality lights around the mirror and vanity area. Typically, these are complemented by the bathroom’s main lighting and perhaps some ambient lighting that allows the user to tailor the lighting as mood dictates. Another popular look is to opt for some sort of ‘statement’ lighting fitting to highlight a particular feature of the bathroom like a classic, copper bath tub, or a stunning, walk-in showering area.”

Is this the same across the market from entrylevel bathroom to higher end bathrooms? “There is actually a great deal of consistency across the different market levels. Ultimately, people want their bathroom lighting to be pleasant and relaxing - with key areas enhanced with task lighting where necessary. However, as you might expect, entry-level bathrooms will keep things simple - ticking off key fittings such as good lighting around the mirror and vanity area and good quality general lighting. Within mid to higher end bathrooms, both the fittings and the lighting effects become more sophisticated. For example, you’re more likely to see subtle details such as special finishes on fittings, touch-sensitive controls and diffused shades.” How is bathroom lighting technology developing and what opportunities will that open up in terms of lamps / lighting effects / controls? “As far as technology is concerned, LEDs are very much the future of bathroom lighting. They’re energyefficient, affordable and easily outshine halogen or fluorescent alternatives. LED lighting is also very democratic - it is relatively easy to install and with the right fittings, LEDs can elevate a standard bathroom scheme to something really special. In fact, that is probably one of its biggest advantages for retailers they represent excellent added value and customers can’t fail to be impressed.”

T

he mirror cabinet is an essential part of any bathroom. Not only does it provide valuable storage in what is often one of the smallest rooms in the house, its reflective surface aids with daily bathroom rituals. To do this, good light is essential. Schneider has tackled this with its latest bathroom mirror cabinet, PALILINE LED. To create maximum performance, Schneider ensures its lights do not create shadow or glare thanks to its LEDs being mounted above and below the cabinet. This also creates an even light distribution that is powerful enough to illuminate the face - a must for make up application and shaving. Its aesthetics are impressive too, with an innovative design that allows the lower LED strip to be integrated into the profile of the cabinet - ideal for creating ambient mood lighting if the unit is flush or surface mounted. The cabinet LED strips can also be switched on or off separately or together to ensure the unit provides basic lighting to light the room or directly to the face as required. Keen to cement its name in the UK market, it has successfully launched a unique and stylish accessible bathroom range that provides everyone with a safer bathroom through inclusive design, rather than a dedicated bathroom for people with disabilities. People who need assistance but wish for an attractive and stylish bathroom no longer need to settle for clinical and functional designs. “We offer coloured products that are soft and warm to the touch, environmentally friendly, provide a superior non-slip surface and are antimicrobial. It also offers the architectural and design community solutions and options, with soft, warm lines compatible with today’s style of bathroom fixtures.” Enrico adds, “Our single focus is to make bathing safe and enjoyable but why shouldn’t it look good too? he bedroom is a room that needs to be both practical and attractive, whatever its size,” explains Phill Hoggar, ECF’s Product Manager for Doors. The sliding door system, which is fast becoming a favourite in Europe thanks to its space-saving characteristics, has been designed to create a stylish alternative to a conventional hinge system that utilises the space available. enjamin Franklin was famously quoted as once saying, “A place for everything and everything in its place.” This saying still holds great value today, with furniture designers eager to create new and innovative ways to conceal household items. But what has caused this hide-away trend and is it here to stay? David Canning, Ney’s Product Manager, explains: “The compact living concept is in full swing, with a clear focus on today’s growing urban lifestyle culture. Houses in the UK are getting smaller and smooth integration from kitchen to living room to bedroom provides the much soughtafter look and feel of space.” It is this fluidity of design, along with the need for ample storage in our ever-shrinking homes that has seen the space-saving storage and wirework market grow in recent years, with Ney, as ever, at the forefront of innovation. With the ability to conceal clutter and optimise space, Ney’s range of hidden household units, camouflaged furniture and sliding units is fast becoming an essential feature in British kitchen and bedroom design. “At Ney, we have seen the demand for storage products grow in recent years. To accommodate this popular trend, we have joined forces with several kitchen and bedroom component experts from across Europe to offer

Unlike many conventional hinge systems, Ney’s designs offer a high degree of flexibility for furniture manufacturers and designers alike. And, with few restrictions, contemporary designs can be created for the most challenging of room dimensions. David adds, “Hide-away units and pull-out mechanisms now have the ability to conceal whole rooms and thanks to Ney’s unique solutions for the kitchen and bedroom, it has never been easier to create imaginative bespoke designs that accentuate the feeling of space.” For more information on Ney visit www.ney.co.uk or call 024 7630 8100.
