Grow wit It's a furniture-maker’s dream to be able to source all his products in one place and to be guaranteed consistently low prices throughout the year, but for 23-year-old bespoke kitchen and bedroom manufacturer, Aaron Bailey, this is an everyday occurrence, thanks to his strong relationship with consumables supplier, Ney Ltd.
Aaron Bailey, owner of BCA Interiors.
W
hat do you want to do for a living? It’s a question that every 16-year-old is asked and for many, it is an unanswerable question. But for Dorset-based Aaron Bailey, his answer came easily: “I’ve always wanted to make furniture.” “From a young age, I knew I wanted to work with my hands. It was what I was good at,” recalls the craftsman. Today, Aaron is celebrating his fifth year in business, creating bespoke kitchen, bedroom and lounge furniture for domestic homes and commercial venues. But at only 23 years old, what’s his secret to success? “The end result is only as good as the tools you use,” explains Aaron. “When I started BCA Interiors in 2009, I quickly realised that my customers expected the very best in design and build quality. From the initial carcass and glues used to the hinges and runners, the results had to be perfect.” To do this, Aaron turned to several suppliers, trying to find a balance between good quality products and cost-effective prices. This, as he recalls, was no mean feat. “Juggling suppliers often led to delays and a slower project turnaround. I knew I needed to find a better solution.” It was around this time that Aaron started to see an upturn in the market. “For the first time since the recession, people were looking to renovate their homes and were not afraid to spend more on bespoke, luxury products. I couldn’t afford to be held back by poor logistics. I needed a company that could supply everything I needed quickly and efficiently or I was going to loose valuable business opportunities.” On a chance calling, one of Ney’s sales team visited the Dorset-based

Inset: Ney’s made-to-measure Infinity Collection is pictured here with Dakar woodgrain and shaker design.
With their new synchronised rollers, Smartbox drawers provide exceptional stability throughout their entire extension and can carry 40kg or 65kg of load. With its soft closing system, it doesn’t matter whether the drawer is closed gently or slammed, the final close is soft and sophisticated, affirming the quality of the furniture made by BCA Interiors.

th ney… workshop. “I didn’t release quite how much Ney could offer me and how flexible their approach to business was. I’m a small business. I can’t be ruled by minimum order quantities and complex discount structures. It’s not cost effective for me,” explains Aaron. After the first order was placed, there was no looking back. BCA Interiors now use Ney’s Laguna aluminum profiles, which are exclusive to Ney; Samet Smart Boxes and Impro hinges; and a wide range of Ney consumables. And with no minimum order quantity and next day delivery available, Aaron is free to purchase what he wants, when he wants. Aaron also takes advantage of Ney’s made-to-measure kitchen and bedroom doors too. Aaron explains, “As a sole trader, I don’t have the time to make my own doors, so I rely on quality doors being supplied to me. Because I create bespoke furniture, Ney’s made to measure service is a great help. I can tell Ney exactly what I need to complete my design and it’s
delivered to me within ten working days. When I have an influx of orders, this service is invaluable.” But that’s not all. Aaron adds, “If I ever have a question or query that needs answering, I know that Ney’s sales team will go out of their way to find an answer. I think, for a small business owner, this attitude to business is essential and is what makes Ney so unique.” Now with a dependable supplier to hand, Aaron’s diary is fully booked for the next 12 weeks and he’s looking towards the future. But what’s next for the young business owner? “Now I know I have a supplier that I can trust, I’m looking to grow the business. I’ve already started work on a showroom that will have room for five or six displays. The first display is currently being built and includes Ney’s acrylic door range. I’m confident that Ney’s presence will prove to be a real asset to the company.” For more information on Ney visit www.ney.co.uk or call 024 7630 8100.
Used by BCA Interiors to create a sleek bespoke TV stand (shown below), the Impro hinge from Samet has perfected the gentle, quiet closing of furniture doors. A 5-stage damping system allows a door to close on its own at a speed selected to suit the door size and weight. The cushioning effect can be adjusted from 1–5 on the hinge arm under the cap. Depending on personal preference, the setting can be selected so that furniture doors move slow or fast and close softly and silently.

hen it comes to choosing a kitchen, what is important to you? Does price always lead the way or are endless style concepts, the latest manufacturing techniques and design flexibility equally important? Maybe availability and fast delivery are also keys to winning your favour. If all of these merit consideration, then TKC’s comprehensive kitchen door portfolio is certainly worth a closer look. With over 40 kitchen door collections available from stock, the Manchester-based distributor has proved that kitchen design doesn’t need to be ruled solely by your budget. Operating out of a 70,000-square-foot, purpose-built distribution warehouse, its designs range from modern high-gloss slab doors through to traditional hand-painted wooden options. But, whilst its designs may vary, TKC’s commitment to providing high quality products that continue to be competitively priced remains a priority. In addition to kitchen doors and carcasses, TKC’s product portfolio includes wirework, hinges, gas lift systems, handles, storage solutions, drawer boxes and lighting. ave you ever wished there was a way to break away from the current doors on offer and create something different for your customer - something he can’t get elsewhere? Then The Cupboard Door Company is a name you’ll want to note. The Cupboard Door Company makes MDF doors to order and the company’s speciality is one-piece construction. Raised and fielded panel doors and drawer fronts, Shaker-framed doors, inset frame systems - they’re all made from one piece of MDF and supplied primed, in the raw or top-coated in more or less any colour you choose. Through substantial investment in CNC technology and some pretty clever adaptation of manufacturing techniques, even traditional five-piece doors and in-frame doors (complete with frame) are made from one solid piece - which means as well as customising the design to suit your customer, you can specify any size and any style. If your customer’s chosen kitchen is in a painted style, you can be sure every door will be perfectly square for a perfect fit every time and there will be no movement or cracking of the finished door. Says director, Craig Warren, “Our ingenious bespoke manufacturing processes allow us to be totally responsive to your requirements. Everything is made-to-order in the highest quality high impact, moisture-resistant MDF and can be delivered raw, primed or painted according to your specification. No joints, one piece, no cracking... This is what sets our product apart from others.“ To find out how The Cupboard Door Company could help set your product apart, email sales@cupboarddoor.co.uk or call 01323 899944.

Market Insight Kerry Baulch, head of product management at Häfele UK, discusses storage components and his predictions for market change in the coming years.
sound storage
How has the sales of storage components developed over the past two to three years? • A notable trend has been the growing trend for clean lines in storage shelving designs. Glass has become increasingly popular too so it’s become a key design feature. We’ve noted that designers, retailers and homeowners want to see the shelves alone, rather than the mechanisms to make the products work so we’ve acted accordingly. What are the fastest-growing storage components? • Larders, pantries and corner cupboards are enjoying a resurgence. Many storage requirements are also being met by wide or deep drawer units as an alternative to cabinets with hinged doors. Flexible products and accessories are also proving popular as they can accommodate a range of bulky kitchen essentials, such as large pots and pans. Are there any areas where the retail trade still needs training? • There’s definitely room for more training. From talking to customers, we have found that the public in general is almost completely unaware of the options available to them in terms of kitchen storage accessories. We listen to our customers, which is why we have created an inspirational website, ideasforliving.co.uk, which is designed entirely to showcase our products and educate the consumer on what is available.
Hide and sleek solutions for the kitchen.
SieMatic’s personalised interior storage system incorporates functional intersecting aluminium panels that can be added, moved or removed at any time to accommodate items of different sizes. It features an extra deep compartment that claims to provide 50 percent more storage height, achieved by lowering the drawer bottoms so that large utensils can be stored. A Flock2Block surface has been designed to prevent content movement that could lead to damage or disorder and a USB charging station can also be integrated. 0161 246 6010 www.siematic.co.uk
How do you see the sales of storage components developing in the future? • Currently, the vast majority of storage cabinets are sold to the consumer with nothing inside them. However, we’re constantly improving awareness of the storage components on the market and with more innovative products in the pipeline we expect storage components to become a key aspect of interior design. By maximising space our customers can increase cross-sell opportunities and, ultimately, increase their revenue.

SALICE. TITANIUM. WARMTH AND TECHNOLOGY: TITANIUM FINISH. The new titanium finish perfectly integrates the hinge into the design of the cabinet conveying a sensation of warmth and at the same time incorporating modern functionality. The colour, new and different compared with the traditional blued or nickel-plated finishes, is less invasive and has a muted sheen. The titanium reflections make this hinge ideal in combination with darker interiors and with the numerous shades of wood available. The good reflection properties and the technological aspect of the hinge allow a perfect integration with the place where it is to be inserted, also suitable in the lightest interiors. The corrosion strength is considerably increased compared to the classic nickel-plated finish. “One of the key factors affecting the market is consumers’ understanding of the different products available. The word composite covers a wide range of products and manufacturers need to be much more clear and precise about the features and benefits that its product offers.” Andrew Pickup - Director, Karonia.
Veneto by GetaCore is the new solid surface décor line from Westag and Getalit. Available with a thickness of 3mm, it is comes in three décors: white, grey and black. PRACTICAL BENEFITS FROM KARONIA MISTRAL from Karonia is a range of 25mm solid surfacing combining the look of natural quartz and stone with the practicality and creative potential of an acrylic-based solid surface material. It is simple to install without the need for special tooling as the solid 25mm format allows MISTRAL to be worked with a router - like wood or laminate worktops. It is also easy to add detailing such as drainer grooves and edge profiles, and to create dramatic curves and other shapes with seamless joins. Using a completely solid material such as MISTRAL also means any edge profile can be simply and successfully achieved. This is a great way of adding a unique design element to a kitchen. MISTRAL 25mm solid surface worktops come with a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty and are available in a comprehensive selection of 20 colours, three of which were launched at kbb2014. The range is available in the UK and Ireland via a network of six appointed distributors listed on the website, www.karonia.com
The completely solid format of MISTRAL combined with its seamless jointing properties means that bespoke solutions of any size, shape or complexity can be achieved, such as this curved breakfast bar and worksurface in Consera. 0845 6580 333 www.karonia.com

What drives consumer choice between the many different materials available? • When choosing a worktop material, consumers need to consider a variety of factors. Their choice will have an impact on the look and feel, as well as functionality of the kitchen. Kitchen worktops are used daily, therefore the material needs to be hardwearing and durable, scratch, heat and moisture resistant. With cost being one of the main considerations when selecting a material, durability is crucial – customers want a worktop that will last. At the same time the material needs to be practical, easily maintained and cleaned. Wood, for example, is more high maintenance as it needs regular oil treatment, and glass will mark easily. It’s important to keep these qualities in mind as other materials such as wood or stone are porous and can require special attention to keep up their appearance and ensure a high standard of hygiene. Colour and texture, along with any design details such as a tight profile, need to fit in with the overall space. With the kitchen becoming the social hub of the house used for entertainment, the worktop material used can provide a statement feature. In an open living space, colours can visually unite the kitchen with the dining and living area, or be used to create ‘zones’. Another factor is the installation itself. Some materials can be cut on site, so customers can have their worktops fitted straight away; other materials need to be templated and cut at a factory, which can take anything from 2 to 4 weeks and upwards. Wood and stone worktops are also difficult to transport, lift and manoeuvre. With so many more affordable materials now on the market, is stone still the most desired worktop? • This depends very much on the region and its local preferences. In stone-producing countries, where stone is rather affordable and therefore not as desired, consumers have a tendency to look for trendy alternatives. Today there is a huge variety of great looking man-made materials like concrete, tile or engineered stone. Real timber, reclaimed wood or even stainless steel are also high on the list of ‘wanted’ worktop materials. Textured, solid colour materials can be a highlight for the purists – and with 70% of people across Europe buying white kitchens, there’s quite a few of them! In traditional ‘wood countries’, like the UK, Finland or Russia, we see a strong demand for stones such as Carrara marble, onyx, black slate, or Nero Assoluto. They are perceived as precious and desirable, the must-have for a high-end kitchen. What are the latest trends on the market? • Although radical changes are rare, style and the use of materials, colours and finishes are constantly evolving: kitchens turn from working into living spaces with built-in screens and desks adjoined to the breakfast bar, and back to working spaces with lots of open shelving, steel work surfaces and mega-size appliances. ‘Industrial’ is one of the key style trends in today‘s kitchens, with metals the most suitable material to give this style credibility. Metal, especially stainless steel, is a classic material in catering and canteens - but also in old-school, vintage kitchens, turning back the time to when cooking was more labour than pleasure! Contemporary sleek lines are the norm, but more traditional styles are also popular, possibly powered by increased demand from the Middle East and Russia where the Italian classic style with golden door knobs and hand-crafted cabinets is an expression of styleconsciousness. Worktops, tables or breakfast bars made out of eye-catching real timber surprise in today’s kitchen settings. Their elegant rusticity is a welcome accent in the contemporary monochrome kitchen style. Species are local or exotic, we see reclaimed planks with filled cracks and bow tie joints or beautifully hand-finished surfaces. Authenticity is the key for wood grains, but also for stones. There’s no fear of bold scale and a bit of colour and contrast, from an elegantly veined white Carrara marble, to luxurious brown granites and beautiful, large scale Breccias. The finishes range from polished to untextured flat low gloss, from honed to brushed, rougher textures.

uilding a brand and establishing trust in your product is never an easy process, especially when you are not first to market,” explains Richard Barrett, sales director of QF Distribution, the exclusive distributor of QUARTZFORMS. “But, nearly two years on, I can confidently say that QUARTZFORMS has established itself in the UK market and we are increasing sales month on month.” But, in a competitive market what makes this product stand out from the crowd? Richard believes the product's success lies in its advanced engineering techniques found in QUARTZFORMS’ German manufacturing facilities. “We use a 93% pure quartz compound. It is one of nature's hardest minerals,” explains Richard. “But, to make this superior product even better, we take this natural material on step further. Thanks to the Bretonstone® patented vacuum vibro-compression system, the machine gives the material a high-impact resistance and a dense, compacted surface finish, which can't be guaranteed with natural stone. We also use 36 polishing heads to create a higher gloss level and consistent, high quality finish.” This high level of manufacturing has resulted in a wide range of innovative scratch, heat and stain resistant designs taking the KBB industry by storm. And, with over 50 designs in stock and readily available from Essex-based QF Distribution Ltd, it is clear to see why QUARTZFORMS designs are proving popular with KBB designers, architects and retailers. Richard Barrett adds, “At QF Distribution Ltd we aim to meet the needs of industry professionals with an old-fashioned approach to doing business. To us, every one of our customers is a VIP.” For more information on QUARTZFORMS or to request a sample, visit www.qfdistribution.co.uk or call 01245 243929.

Plus, its non-porous design makes it particularly suited for use in kitchen and bathroom environments. This futuristic material offers limitless design possibilities and allows even the most ambitious and daring of ideas to become a reality. Supplied in thicknesses of 6, 9 and 12mm, HI-MACS® solid surface is available in almost 100 colours, including five vibrant designs created exclusively by Karim Rashid. Market Insight “We all know that every kitchen needs a sink; it’s a fundamental piece of kit even if a customer invests in a dishwasher. Whether it’s part of a whole new kitchen, or used to refresh an existing arrangement, the sink can really add to the whole design and experience of the kitchen, so it’s important to inspire customers with interesting designs, materials and shapes. “The range of exciting and design-led sinks available now on the market can help you stand out from the competition and pull in those customers. Stainless steel is still a really eyecatching option and its long-lasting and durable qualities make it equally practical. Ceramic never fails to win over customers with a penchant for traditional styling and is a must in any portfolio. Composite sinks provide even more choice thanks to the flexible nature of the material. It can be moulded into interesting and dynamic shapes, plus the choice of colours is wider than any other material. “It’s vital to make customers aware of the different options available to them so that they can make a purchasing decision that reflects the importance of the sink within the kitchen.”

Sink design has come a long way in recent years and, whilst stylish looks are an important selling factor, most consumers are still using it as a functional item on the whole. There is a plethora of useful sink accessories available but, in order to get the consumer to trade up, retailers need to show accessories to their customers and educate them in the benefits they can offer.” Dave Mayer - Sales & Marketing Director, Reginox. IDS has extended its Tuscan brand of flooring and hardwood worktops with the launch of a dedicated sink range. Its range offers 30 sinks geared to offer the best selling styles, the spectrum of popular materials in stainless steel, granite and ceramic and a choice of price points. first class resort from rak “
T
he market we operate in is the judge of our performance,” begins Rob, when asked why retailers should take a closer look at RAK’s product ranges. “If you tick all the boxes, then your offering is likely to succeed.” It is this mentality that culminated in the launch of RAK’s latest product range, the Resort Bathroom Collection. The comprehensive bathroom range, which was first seen at this year’s kbb exhibition, has been designed for retailers, housing developers and designers alike. “The range is flexible in terms of design scope and practicality,” explains Rob. “This was intentional. We wanted to design a range that could not only work in any setting but was attractive enough for retailers to secure sales on it the moment it went into a showroom.” The range includes six WC configurations - from space saving designs to comfort heights - each featuring RAK’s next generation rimless design, Hygiene+. Eliminating the need for a hidden rim or channel in the pan, Hygiene+ allows water to be fired from three separate jets to ensure the whole surface of the pan is flushed, both vertically and horizontally. As germs and limescale cannot collect under a rim, the toilet pan is easy to wipe clean and the need to use harsh cleaners is eliminated.
With the launch of its Resort Bathroom Collection at this year’s kbb, RAK’s UK Chairman/Joint Managing Director and founder, Rob Jull, talks to Kitchen & Bathroom Journal about the company’s latest offerings as he looks to the future…

“The new Hygiene+ rimless flushing system has been a great success, so much so that we now include it on all four Resort WC models. It offers the end-user greater access for cleaning, without changing the look of the ‘standard’ WC design, which can put people off,” explains Rob. The modern design adapted for Resort sanitaryware is reflected throughout the Collection. Matching basins are offered in seven designs – from space-saving corner formats, to sleek rectangular and counter-top bowl basins, can be undermounted or inset. Like the sanitaryware, two separate pedestal height options are also offered. Each Resort basin is fully glazed, including the underside; this, along with the basin shape, eliminates the need for special semi-recessed models. A variety of chrome taps are also available in standard and tall sizes, and ceramic mixing cartridges provide self-cleaning operation, with long-lasting results, smooth movement and fingertip control. There’s also the option for all basins to have a click-clack ceramic plug waste, as well as chromed brass. Other Resort products include freestanding and built-in baths; pale wood and white gloss cabinets, featuring ambient lighting to light the way at night; illuminated mirrors and shower enclosures with 8mm self-clean glass doors. RAK also has surfaces covered too. But it is clear to see that this concept was not an after-thought. Each design has been created to complement the range and offer a host of practical advantages. From an authentic board-sized wood-effect tile and contemporary marble mosaic to a highly realistic reproduction of a volcanic earth structure, the new porcelain range represents a step-up for RAK’s UK offering. “This range now encompasses the elite end of the market for both designers and consumers, whilst still providing an affordable price point,” says Rob. So what’s next for RAK UK? Rob adds, “The Resort Bathroom Collection has really taken off since April and I can see us having over 300 operational dealers by the end of the year. It puts us well on target for 500 by the end of 2015, but this won’t inhibit one of our key objectives, which is to grant reasonable exclusivity for our Platinum Resort dealerships.” Recently Sales Director, Alvin Biggs, was appointed Joint Managing Director to help a more dynamic approach to the future of RAK UK Limited.

As well as adopting the same Hygiene+ rimless flushing system throughout all Resort back-to-wall and wall-hung models, RAK also offer two WC sizes - Mini and Maxi - which vary in projection and pedestal height, to suit taller users.

Pelipal’s marketing package mirrors the customer journey through three key stages: 1. Drive consumers into the showroom InHouse helps retailers attract people into their showroom using advertising concepts and campaigns, put together by a leading design agency, that’s supplemented by a national consumer advertising and PR campaign.
2. Convince at point of purchase Creative marketing and point of sale support entices and reassures consumers when they’re close to a purchase.
3. Make the most of recommendations To make the most of marketing, there’s nothing better than recommendations. The marketing package works hard to drive referrals with creative ideas and options for retailers. This is why InHouse has brought on 41 new dealers in 2014, and now has a total network of 212 retailers. This is also why Pelipal sales are up 59% on 2013.
The trend for simplicity in the bathroom is illustrated by the new Solitaire 6005 from Pelipal. Available in five wood finishes, plus white high gloss and anthracite high gloss.
G
ermany bathroom furniture manufacturer Pelipal was brought into the UK by InHouse in 2011 at the height of the recession. To some, this might have seemed like a crazy decision, but it has proved to be the opposite. Wayne Dance, Managing Director explains, “When retailers are busy there is a concern that change can upset the balance. However, when money is tight, and retailers have to work even harder for a sale, it’s time to reassess.” He continues, “Where can we improve? How can we ensure we have good margins? Which manufacturers are really looking to support and grow their independent retailer network? Now that the economy has picked up and lessons have been learned, retailers continue to look at how they can successfully build their businesses.” Pelipal presents a superb product portfolio that is supplemented by German efficiency and engineering, combined with impressive service and support. Wayne adds, “Pelipal has created a highly attractive offer, but it’s still not enough; that’s why at kbb2014, InHouse presented probably the best PR and marketing support package to retailers. There’s nothing else like it for the retail market.” For more information, call 01661 842304, visit www.inhouseuk.net, or email paulinekennedy@inhouseltd.co.uk

Market Insight “When purchasing a radiator or towel warmer for the home, consumers nowadays are looking to invest in design-led products that are of the highest quality, but also don’t fall short when it comes to functionality. Gone are the days of the basic ‘white rad’; people want a design that complements the overall theme of a space, is efficient, yet at the same time is a style statement in its own right and achieves that all important ‘wow’ factor. The heating market has certainly moulded itself in line with this trend and there’s an impressive array of designer radiators now on offer to suit any budget and spatial configuration. “For those who desire a completely unique heating solution that has been tailored according to their exact requirements, a bespoke design service, which allows each and every aspect of the design to be altered according to what the customer wants, is the answer. Because people are undoubtedly now more globally aware than ever, it’s the heating specialists that offer a service like this, and also manufacture their products in the UK, that are thriving. Such companies are able to offer more efficient lead times and customer service, so are a popular choice amongst consumers.”

How well do you know your customers? Zehnder’s Retail Marketing Manager, Louisa John, tells us what consumers are really looking for when purchasing a bathroom radiator…
The idea that pressed steel panel radiators were simply installed in every room in the house is now a thing of the past. As manufacturers have developed new products and consumers have become more knowledgeable, not only regarding the products on the market, but also with respect to the choice of overall heating system for their home, expectations and requirements have changed. Now a feature in many households, it is important for retailers to fully understand what factors are considered when selecting a new radiator:
Design
A highly functional and stylish towel rail, the Zehnder Roda from Zehnder can be customised to meet the exact requirements of the homeowner as it is available in a horizontal or vertical orientation and can be made to measure. Finished in a broad range of colours it is the ideal tailor-made heating solution for kitchens and bathrooms. 01276 605855 www.zehnder.co.uk
Design trends continue to play an important role as interior magazines show off the latest models. The increased use of colour, and colour matching the radiator to the bathroom interior, continues to grow and consumers are always looking for uniqueness to create a point of difference in their home.
Energy efficiency As more consumers choose to purchase renewable technologies, such as a ground or air source heat pump, then they need to be safe in the knowledge that radiators are the ideal heat emitters for their system. One material which is now more commonly used is aluminium. An extremely energy efficient alternative, it can help consumers achieve their target of reducing energy costs and carbon emissions. The lower weight and lower water content requirement of aluminium radiators gives them a lower thermal inertia. This means that they react quickly to changes in temperature to ensure a constant comfortable indoor environment with a more efficient use of energy. New advances in material technology have also seen the development of radiators using graphite. Capitalising on the natural properties of graphite; lightweight and high thermal conductivity, these radiators provide an extremely even heat distribution throughout the room with exceptional controllability.
Heat output Alongside the aesthetics of the products consumers are becoming more astute regarding the heat output requirements of their radiators. This is particularly important with towel rails as the highly polished surfaces of stainless steel and chrome can reduce efficiency by as much as 25%. Therefore if stainless steel is the material of choice for its non-corrosive qualities and longer warranties, then painted stainless steel can be a more energy efficient option. Manufacturers are offering a wide range of colours to accommodate this, enabling customer to find a suitable aesthetic finish for every project.
Functionality
Make a statement with the ultra-modern Ceylon designer radiator from Hudson Reed. The minimalist design combined with a practical towel rail, offers a unique heating solution for the style conscious consumer. Available in black or white, it measures 370 x 1800mm and offers a 11063 btu/hr output. 01282 418000 www.hudsonreed.co.uk
Another key question is whether the radiator is being used purely for room heating or if it is also for drying towels? Dual energy radiators are now more common place as they give consumers the flexibility to use their radiators even when the central heating system is turned off. In addition with a rise in the number of downstairs cloakrooms and en-suite bathrooms per household, the need for smaller towel rails has occurred. As a result whole new ranges of ‘petite’ cloakroom towels rails have emerged on the market.
Maintenance With greater investment in radiators consumers expect longevity and reliability. They are also interested in hygiene and ease of cleaning which has lead to the development of more smooth surface radiators with add on towel bars which do not collect dust.
Cost Cost is and will always be an important factor for consumers. The key to success for manufacturers is to ensure they have a varied product offering which can accommodate different budgets.

trending technology
With the UK embracing technology in the bathroom, the smart home concept could be closer than you think… Arley Professional’s range of bathroom products now includes the innovative Illuminati LED wetroom panel. With an LED light, that can be fitted with a PIR motion sensor, it illuminates the showering area. Manufactured from high quality 8mm tempered safety glass, it can be installed on a wetfloor or a shower tray. Available in a range of different widths, it can measure 700, 800, 900, 1000, 1200 and 1400mm, and comes in a standard height measuring 1950mm. 01992 703227 www.arleyprofessional.co.uk
Market Insight What are the latest technological developments and smart products for the bathroom? The bathroom is fast becoming just as much of a gadget centre as the kitchen, with technology such as shower toilets, TVs, music systems and Chromotherapy all playing their part. Such technology caters for the different generations of bathroom users. WCs that clean you with water appeal to families, while remote controls and touchless flush plates ensure that operation is simple too. Above all though, touchless technology and shower toilets really raise the comfort levels in the bathroom, creating the luxurious finish that consumers are now looking for. Are consumers ready to embrace this
“Savvy, automated products are a great idea but they can be complicated and become a hindrance rather than a help. Good technology needs to be convenient. This, along with strong design, will make it easier for people to adapt.” Floyd Case - Project Specification Manager, TOTO.
TOTO has launched a new Actilight self-cleaning Washlet. Part of its Neorest collection, it actively fights bacteria, waste and limescale while keeping these from accumulating. Available in two versions - the Neorest AC (Actilight) and Neorest EW (ewater+) - it also features a sensor-based lid that opens and closes automatically, heated seat, a deodoriser to absorb unpleasant odours, and a dryer that can be activated as desired. 020 7831 7544 www.gb.toto.com
technology, or is the smart home concept a long way off? On the contrary, we recently conducted a survey of 1,000 homeowners which revealed that they are very willing to embrace the idea of technology in the bathroom. When it comes to the latest in gadgets, 45% of respondents said they would be interested in a ‘shower toilet’ that freshens the user with water after use. Other popular gadgets included touch free controls (41%), great for customers particularly concerned with hygiene, spa baths (29%), plus in-bathroom music (24%). What are the benefits of using smart products in the bathroom and is there a market for this? Technology is becoming an increasingly important part of bathroom design as it can play a big role in creating a relaxing, spa-like haven in which to relax
and unwind in. Far from a gimmick, incorporating technology into the bathroom can really raise the comfort levels and often has a practical as well as aesthetic purpose for being there. Importantly, given our ageing population, much of this technology helps us future-proof our bathrooms, perhaps with the addition of a shower toilet that gently cleans you with water, or with a touch-free flush plate. Technology helps to bring a new level of wellness into the bathroom and make it more the centre of the home rather than the smallest room only visited for practical reasons.

“The next few years will be an interesting and progressive period for our industry as changes occur across the globe relating to ‘best practice’ around the efficient use of water. Subsequently, manufacturers will be under increasing pressure to develop products that fulfil legislative and social responsibility requirements. “Succinctly, there are two pivotal reasons that will drive these changes - the issue of water scarcity as a global concern and that heating our water is contributing significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, and accounts for 25% of consumer energy bills. Considering that we use almost 50% more water than we did 25 years ago - much of which can be attributed to power showers and household appliances - and this usage contributes to around 35 million tonnes of greenhouse gases each year, there is little wonder.
trending technology “In what has always been a highly competitive market, manufacturers of bathroom products now find themselves competing to offer the best combination of technology, practicality, stand-out design, installation and user friendly features. This brings with it greater opportunity for retailers to advise their customers about the latest solutions.” Steve Saunders - Senior Technical Manager, Triton Showers.
The Touch electric shower from Triton offers easy-to-use touchscreen controls and a clear illuminated digital display, providing homeowners with complete visibility of temperature. The easy-toread touch control and display panel ensures the unit is easy to clean and an optional eco setting is also available which typically reduces the water flow by 1.7 litres per minute. 024 7634 4441 www.tritonshowers.co.uk
The Geberit Monolith Plus has a wealth of technological benefits concealed behind the exterior panel, with a ComfortLight providing a warm glow as you walk towards it. Ideal for avoiding the glare of an overhead light when using the bathroom at nighttime, it also creates a calming ambience at bathtime. Also discreetly concealed within the glass module, which is available in black or white, is an integrated odour extraction function, which fills the bathroom with clean, fresh air making it the perfect choice for bathrooms with minimal natural ventilation. 0800 077 8365 www.geberit.co.uk

“There are three independent, yet overlapping forces driving the changes that we will see over the coming years. Change to UK legislation; change to European legislation and consumer sentiment and demand for more efficient products. “The UK government is committed to reducing green house gas emissions as one of the leading members of the 37 industrialised countries who are signed up to the G8 Kyoto Agreement. The latest commitment aims to reduce emissions by at least 18%, placing them below 1990 levels. “In the UK the Bathroom Manufacturers Association (BMA) has set up a voluntary industry scheme to label products based on water usage. It is similar in look to the energy efficiency rating labels we see on domestic appliances, like fridges, or the energy efficiency ratings now applied to houses. The European Water Label is evident in the UK
and allows consumers to see the amount of water used per flush, cycle and in taps and showers, how many litres a minute are used. “But the most interesting question facing the industry is how will consumers respond to the compromise between traditional products that have performed with high flow rates to new, more efficient products that use less water, and save money, but may be perceived to impinge on performance? “It will be interesting to see how significant the consumers’ role will be in transitioning to more efficient products, considering that many consumers currently choose taps that have unrestricted flow rates, offering an abundant delivery of water. Under new legislation these taps will achieve a low efficiency rating. Furthermore, how will consumers react to industry-led changes? Will concerns about climate change and water scarcity translate to changes in buyer
behaviour, or is it simply pounds and pence that drives decision making? Will consumers prove to be largely ambivalent? “Either way, the importance of the changes means that the wider industry, consumers, retailers, and suppliers all need to understand the impact of these changes and the industry need to correctly advise consumers on products that fulfil this water saving criteria. “Looking ahead there is still much that tap manufacturers can do to aid water conservation and limit usage. As the digital and wireless age continues to develop there can be no doubt that bathrooms will soon accommodate technology more broadly and support consumers in their drive to reduce water usage. And, by the industry driving change, we can support the Bathroom Manufacturers Association European Water Label Scheme.“
driving change
Water saving is having a positive impact across the bathroom industry. “Despite the vital role it plays in effective sanitation, the toilet has not fundamentally changed since the late 1800s. With UK toilets averaging 9 litres per flush and accounting for 30% of household water use, it is easy to see why reduced flush toilets have attracted significant interest.” Garry Moore - inventor of Propelair.
Using patented displaced air POWA™ technology, the new air operated toilet, Propelair®, uses just 1.5 litres of water per flush, reducing the toilet’s carbon footprint by an average 80%. Thanks to a highperformance flush, the water needed is significantly reduced, saving water and money. It has also been designed to reduce aerosol contamination and removes up to 99.9% of contaminants, making it one of the cleanest toilets on the market. 01268 548322 www.propelair.com
The Jollytronic is Wirquin’s new no-touch toilet flush. It operates via an infra-red signal where the end-user can determine the length of the flush via an eco-stop mechanism. A hygienic alternative to the standard flush, the JOLLYTRONIC is a domestic battery operated flush valve and sensor that is quick and easy to install in most new and exiting cisterns. 0844 412 2029 www.wirquin.co.uk

Logis is the new mixer range from Hansgrohe. Equipped with EcoSmart technology as standard, it delivers 5 litres of water per minute. The Logis 70 and Logis 100 are also available as CoolStart models. This works by only flowing cold water out when the handle is in the central position. This means that the pipe system is no longer filled unnecessarily with hot water or the hot water system specially activated. As a result of these efficient technologies, Logis has received the top ‘Water Efficiency Label’ rating of A in the “Home” category for the domestic sector. 01372 465655 www.hansgrohe.co.uk
“Seeing is believing. When you see a standard and water-saving product working side by side and you can’t see or feel the difference; except you’re told one uses 9 litres per minute and the other 16, there is no compromise and it’s a no-brainer. It also allows the retailer to provide good service and add value by explaining this to the customer.” Martin Mongan - Managing Director, Hansgrohe.
Brassware with benefits Water-saving features are among the highlights of the latest brassware. Manufactured from solid brass, Cifial's Hexa range offers solutions for both high and low pressure water systems. Available in four finishes - PVD Nickel, PVD Copper, Polished Chrome and Gold (pictured) - it offers a touch-free basin tap which operates when you hold your hand within the sensor range, reducing water waste. 01933 402008 www.cifial.co.uk
“Recent research from the Energy Saving Trust found that UK households use 9 billion litres of water every day, the majority of that in the bathroom. It’s therefore important that manufacturers develop technology that gives consumers the option of using less water and retailers continue to drive the water saving message home, by explaining to customers in real terms the positive impact that opting for a water-saving tap or WC can have on their water bills and the environment.” Georgina Spencer Marketing Manager, Roca Group (UK)
Perrin & Rowe has introduced its Country Basin Filtered Tap with smart Triflow Technology. Made in the UK, it is available in four finishes Chrome, Nickel, Pewter or Gold - and features a water filter for pure drinking water in the bathroom.
