“We always bring prototypes to Sicam. This year, we have introduced bronze wirework and an automated shelving unit. Both will be named at Interzum 2015 but Sicam’s visitors got to see them first!” Dario Frazza - Vibo.

Hailo has developed its electrical Hailo Libero (HFO = handsfree open) opening assistant for pull-outs. The ejector system, with integrated LED lighting, has an integrated sensor in the base of the cabinet which can be is activated by lightly tapping it with the foot, opening the door automatically. success for sic L

ike so many Sicam exhibitions before it, Sicam 2014 offered visitors a unique insight into the KBB industry. An exhibition designed to showcase new ideas and gauge reaction, 498 exhibitors displayed their products at the four-day event in Pordenone, Italy. Now in its sixth year, visitors know what to expect. The show is a haven for prototypes and an international launch pad for trends. If your job is to detect up and coming trends and product demand, a visit to Sicam is a must.

“Sicam is seen as a window for new ideas, of design and technical advancement,” explains exhibition organiser, Carlo Giobbi. “Exhibitors are optimistic and it shows. Innovation has never been more tangible.”

This enthusiasm was echoed though the halls, as it was clear that both stand and visitor numbers were up on last year. Demonstrations attracted the crowds, as manufacturers were keen to gain valuable feedback. “Sicam is a must for us,” explains Union Knopf’s Ronald Nöth. Known for its ties with the fashion industry, the handle manufacturer unveiled its latest catwalk-inspired handle concepts for the first time at the show. “With some exhibitions, the focus isn’t always on future development. It can be about the here and now. For us, Sicam is about testing the market. This year, we’ve used the show to gauge the demand for copper. It has been in the fashion world for around five years, especially with watches and jewellery. We have created some prototypes and have received valuable feedback,” explains Ronald. “We’re already toying with the idea of creating a darker, more rustic copper next year,” he adds.

But what do the exhibitors say? “Sicam is a very important show for us, even more so than ZOW,” begins Schwinn’s Francesco Cangiano. “Sicam is based in Italy, a country dedicated to fashion, so it’s not surprising that trends are born here. We are always keen to bring prototypes to Sicam. Visitors’ opinions count and it’s clear to see that strong textile designs will be big news next year.” 4 • KITCHEN AND BATHROOM JOURNAL DECEMBER 2014

With over 17,000 visitors over the four days coming from 95 countries, Sicam continues to be a must-attend show for the international KBB components industry. Carlo Giobbi adds, “We can say that all the major names in Italian furniture have been present this year and it is evident that Sicam represents the national market and remains in itself one of the most important in the worldwide field of furnishings.” SICAM 2015 will be held on Tuesday 13th to Friday 16th of October 2015, visit www.exposicam.com/english for more details.

“In the USA, 40% of people have a sink incinerator, compared to 6% in the UK and 1% in France. We need to get the image out there that these products are a great help in the kitchen and don’t cost the earth.” Hubert Allegrantie - Brand Manager, Insinkerator.

Vauth-Sagel’s XXliner has been designed with largevolume containers that require little space on either side. Already available for narrow kitchen cabinets with widths from 400mm, it can be installed underneath work surface areas in its own cabinet and store up to 91 litres of waste. 0800 171 2909 www.hafele.co.uk

“The UK market is a little different to the rest of Europe. You don’t have such strict rules on recycling and tend to have space for a full-size cabinet bin in your kitchens. Other European countries, such as Germany or Italy, tend to put several recycling bins under the sink, limiting a bin’s capacity. Because of this, we have specifically designed big bins for the UK market. Our most recent, the XXLinear, is 91 litres.” Christofer Thöne – Area Sales, Manager, Vauth Sagel.

The 45, 55 and 65 Insinkerator models have had a facelift. Shown for the first time at Sicam, the M-Series offers better incineration, stronger cutting blades and has been redesigned for easier use. With added curves, it is set to be launched in the UK next year. 01923 297880 www.insinkerator.co.uk

The Maxi larder unit from Vibo, which will be launched in the UK next year, is fully accessible from three sides. With optional glass shelving and separators available, the new design is easy to organise and store products. Soft close as standard. 024 7630 8100 www.ney.co.uk

Peka has launched its new Kitchen Tower. A base unit with hinged doors offers easy access from three sides and segmented storage. Available for units 450 or 600mm wide, it can be installed on the left or right. Perfect for smaller kitchens with limited space, the floor-mounted pull-out has a self-closing mechanism and dampers. Many options in the stylish Lapis hinge range.

With ingenious engineering and stylish designs, there’s always a surprise or two to be found on Salice’s exhibition stands.

The new S10 sliding system, shown above with Salice UK’s MD, Walter Gosling, makes co-planar opening accessible to a wider range of furniture manufacturers. Also new at the show was the S20, a 20kg option.

surprises from salice A

lways full of surprises, the Salice stand at this year’s Sicam didn’t disappoint. The stylish Lapis hinge range offers twelve colours including woodgrains, metallics and plains and Sicam saw the launch of a new push version for handleless doors as well as a version for thick doors. Also new was an adhesive hinge for glass wall cabinets which can be bonded with UV onto glass panels - and a new cover cap for glass door hinges. Making its debut was a new 110º Series B hinge which has five pins, enabling it to be used for a variety of applications by simply changing the mounting plate. Looking for a push magnetic catch to retain large curved doors? Salice’s adjustable striker (background picture) is the only 6 • KITCHEN AND BATHROOM JOURNAL DECEMBER 2014

magnetic holding device you’ll need on any cabinet door up to two metres high - and just look how discreet it is! Salice also launched two new sliding systems and a new damper under its Bortoluzzi brand. For handleless furniture, there’s a new version of the S20 sliding coplanar system as well as an S10 version for kitchen base and wall units which will make co-planar opening accessible to a much wider range of kitchen furniture manufacturers. The new damper is typical Salice: ingenious and neat, it combines magnetic and hydraulic technology to damp the closing of doors up to 70kg, or around 3m x 2m per door. SALICE. TITANIUM. WARMTH AND TECHNOLOGY: TITANIUM FINISH. The new titanium finish perfectly integrates the hinge into the design of the cabinet conveying a sensation of warmth and at the same time incorporating modern functionality. The colour, new and different compared with the traditional blued or nickel-plated finishes, is less invasive and has a muted sheen. The titanium reflections make this hinge ideal in combination with darker interiors and with the numerous shades of wood available. The good reflection properties and the technological aspect of the hinge allow a perfect integration with the place where it is to be inserted, also suitable in the lightest interiors. The corrosion strength is considerably increased compared to the classic nickel-plated finish. ith the recent success of the W14 exhibition at the NEC, BA are excited about 2015 as they work towards celebrating 25 years in business. Award-winning and renowned for quality, sustainability and durability, BA pride themselves on innovation. With this in mind, BA ran a very successful and most definitely innovative competition at the W14 event. The aim of the game was to find someone who could construct a ClicBox carcass in the quickest time. ClicBox by BA is the quickest way to build a kitchen in today’s industry and the winner of the competition really did prove this. With over 400 completing the challenge, it was Tibby Singh, also the BBC’s ‘Young Carpenter of the Year’, who finished the task in just over 8 seconds. 8 • KITCHEN AND BATHROOM JOURNAL DECEMBER 2014

You can view Tibby smashing the 30second challenge on BA’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/bacomponents Designed to make ordering components for fast and simple kitchen assembly, BA are combining the handiness of their ClicBox carcass with the ready availability of their Pronto doors and complementing both of these with ready assembled, ready to go Hettich drawer boxes and hinges to give you the ‘Complete’ range. Market Insight Jean-Noël Chevrier Product Manager, Mobalpa Kitchens.

What direction are the new trends taking European design? The current trends are allowing greater flexibility in kitchen design. DÉCOR AND COLOUR A big trend is still the pure white kitchen which remains the most important colour request by consumers. However, we’re starting to complement this trend and mixing it with other colours, structures and materials for an ultra modern design. But colours are staying neutral in the kitchen. They offer longevity and style, without the risk of using bolder colours that date quickly. FINISH An increasing number of matt colours are being introduced to plain doors to offer a wider choice and alternative option to a high-gloss. Coloured wood kitchens remain popular, specifically white, grey and beige as they help to bring out the texture of the wood on the units. There is also a new generation of melamine wood finish where the structure of the wood can be reworked to give a genuine, real wood effect. The benefit of providing this melamine finish means it is more widely available to smaller budgets but also gives the effect and appearance, without the maintenance of real wood.

European

Is Britain following recent trends or are originality and bespoke offers creating trends of their own? As seen at the 2014 Eurocucina event in Milan, kitchen trends in Europe are similar to the UK. European kitchen companies manufacture the fronts, units, designs and select the new colours, however the national trend uses these concepts and adapts them depending on the country’s culture and how kitchens are used. Mobalpa’s designers work on new layouts and solutions and the sales designers in each country are trained to understand the trends and developments so we can be differentiated in the market and increase its offering to the consumer. Every design is unique, based on the consumer’s behaviours and needs. Consumers need smart and flexible kitchen design with multiple offerings so they can select something that fits their lifestyle. Modern, contemporary kitchen design is currently the biggest trend in Europe and the demand in Britain is very similar to the style and designs everywhere else. With so many options from layout, handles, colours and finishes, designers can take a trend and create a completely bespoke design which is unique to every consumer. What are the latest décor trends in the European kitchen sector? Grey colours, matt lacquers, solid, natural and veneer woods are the latest trends in the European kitchen sector. Manufacturers need to take these trends and propose new layout ideas, colour matching and materials to continue to meet the customers’ requests. Design co-ordination is often associated with European kitchens. Is this trend here to stay and how has it influenced open plan living spaces? Design co-ordination is massively important to give the consumer the opportunity to think about the whole of their living space and not just the kitchen. For example, when you design a kitchen you find out about the customer, how many are in the home and how they use the space to create a layout that integrates the whole home and makes better use of the kitchen for their daily life. Open plan living is a popular trend and has been influenced by design co-ordination, but that doesn’t mean it’s the right choice for every consumer. Designers need to understand the consumer’s needs and create a kitchen which meets them.

Nevia, the new kitchen range from in-toto, shown here in high-gloss Graphite and White, features a smooth high-gloss surface with optimum wear resistance. The newly developed lacquer laminate combines strength and style and is available in White, Magnolia White or Graphite in either handled or handleless kitchen designs. 0113 331 5100 www.intoto.co.uk

A European kitchen seemingly focuses on contemporary handleless design but can you create the look with classical, painted furniture? Handleless kitchens are an important trend in the market and demand continues to increase year on year. This is due to the style and the streamlined look a handleless kitchen provides, however the option tends to only be available with specific ranges at present.

German kitchen manufacturer Schüller launches its 2015 country style kitchen collection.

A

fter returning from its largest and most successful retailer trip to Kitchen Mile in Germany, German kitchen manufacturer Schüller has filled a gap in the market with the launch of a comprehensive Country style kitchen collection for 2015. Retailers can now experience sought-after German manufacturing quality and design combined with country style kitchen character, perfect for the more traditional UK consumer. There are six new ranges in the Country collection - Canto, Domus, Riva, Casa, Finca and Garda - plus further colours and finishes in the Bari collection. These sit alongside the current classic styles of Breda and Cambia. Demonstrating Schüller’s trend-setting nature, the extensive additions present a country house look in a new, modern and relaxed living style. Accessories such as grooved support panels, plate racks, pull-out pan storage beneath hob units and open shelf units, enable kitchen designers to create a typical country kitchen or a contemporary environment with a homely feel. Wayne Dance, Managing Director of InHouse, adds, “What is fantastic is that Schüller hasn’t just introduced one country range. It’s a full collection that will satisfy every consumer from the most aspirational through to those on a tight budget. The choice is enormous from the full range of Schüller colours, to refined country tones in natural hues. The details are what make the difference here. That’s why Schüller has called it More Country.” For more information contact InHouse Inspired Room Design on 01661 842304, info@inhouseltd.co.uk, www.inhouseuk.net or www.inhousecaribbean.com Domus is available in 6 natural hues - White, Magnolia, Sand Grey (pictured right), Agate Grey, Blue Grey, Sage Green - in a silk gloss lacquered front. 13-15 Energy saving

19/11/14

4:17 pm

Page 1

Market Insight Whirlpool’s Neil Austin gives retailers advice on the green market.

V-ZUG is one of the first manufacturers in the world to integrate a highefficiency heat pump in a dishwasher to reduce its power consumption by almost half. This gives its Adora SL WP dishwasher an energy efficiency rating of A+++. It consumes seven litres of water and offers a partial load programme that can reduce the usage to one to six litres. 0843 289 5759 www.vzug.co.uk

Why has there been an increase in the demand for energy-saving appliances? The consumer is increasingly aware of the energy-saving benefits of a highly efficient appliance, especially those with large families who perhaps run lots of laundry or dishwashing cycles. The recession has resulted in more willingness to invest in an appliance if it can demonstrate long-term resource and financial savings, and this has meant that efficient appliances are gaining in market share. With so many manufacturers creating energy-saving appliances, how can consumers see what products will really benefit them? To identify products that will best benefit individuals, consumers should pay attention to EU energy labelling, as well as manufacturer statements and guarantees that quantify savings. It is still the upfront cost of a new appliance that is the main deterrent for those consumers not wanting to trade up, but escalating energy prices are highlighting the need to at least consider the long term savings of eco-appliances, which are even more tangible if communicated through real life examples. In addition, consumers should look out for the very latest technologies that underpin their low ratings, such as the use of heat pump technology in tumble dryers, very low water consumption, or sensor technology. What can retailers do to help educate their customers on energy-saving and the appliances on offer? While energy efficient appliances are on the rise, reports by the Institute for Public Policy Research show UK consumers still lag other EU countries in their purchase, which has caused projections of the costs of energy bill to rise from an additional £64 to £127 over the next ten years. It is therefore highly important for the retailer to explain the energy label and its meaning, as well as how the consumer can benefit from the investment in an eco-friendly appliance. The current energy labelling system highlights the total amount of energy used per year and this is invaluable in being able to compare models and brands to find the appliance that is most affordable with maximum long-term savings.

gone Green Appliance manufacturers are setting the standard with the latest energy-saving designs. “The current energy classification system, determined by the Energy Efficiency Index (EEI), makes buying an eco appliance much easier for the consumer. Labelling regulations ensure annual energy consumption of the product is clearly stated in KWh, making it easier for customers to calculate the long-term savings of that particular appliance, which could end up being the deciding factor as to whether to purchase or not.” Juliana Sado - Senior Category Manager, UK and Ireland, Maytag.

Maytag’s MWA 10149WH washing machine, which boasts an A+++ energy rating, has been engineered to save up to 70% on energy, water and time compared to models without IntelliSense® technology. It also includes an eco monitor that will tell you before you begin each cycle the energy usage of the programme and recommend the detergent needed per use. 0844 499 0101 www.maytag.co.uk

toilets with technology Getting BASINS and TOILETS to fit in small places has been RAK’s speciality for 15 years. As a result we have four ranges where the close coupled WC projects from the wall by only 600mm or less. The same for basins where our narrowest example of 450mm x 216mm Compact Slimline Wash Basin is also among the slimmest in the market. Space is often everything and when things are tight in many cloakrooms RAK leads the market in using the space available to it’s maximium. There is an extra bonus as all RAK products are highly affordable!

deal Bathrooms has announced a major new initiative building on its Premium Brand strategy with a collection of three suites from Villeroy & Boch. The new bathroom range widens the V&B offering with an “affordable luxury” range, exclusive to Ideal Bathrooms. Essential by Villeroy & Boch, includes three new suites - Tube, Metro and Metro Plus. The range offers an upper market entry-level collection from the V&B brand to the current V&B dealer network. Ideal Bathrooms’ Commercial Director Danielle Lillis adds, “The suites are ideal for those seeking the highest quality of design and product at affordable price points, with Ideal Bathrooms a strong partner to facilitate this new product.” Metro offers a sleek and slim-line entry-level option and includes cloakroom basins, semi-recessed undercounter and inset basins compatible with V&B furniture, full and semi-pedestal models and a comprehensive selection of WCs including wall mounted, close-coupled and fully back-to-wall. Top of the offering is the Metro Plus range which reflects the rounded style of Metro but with a more chunky appeal. Both ranges can be mixed and matched as preferred to bring individual style to this luxury bathroom. Between the two Metro ranges is Tube. Designed to reflect the current market trends in the fashionable London scene, it boasts clean lines. Its flat fronted deep fascia basin collection complements the slim-line cistern WC. Tube basins are available for surface or wall mounting and with full or half pedestal, and WCs also include wall mounted and back-to-wall models - all of which can be teamed with V&B’s stylish bathroom furniture for a personalised bathroom design. Premium Brand Sales Director Rob St Barbe says, “This is a very exciting development in our Premium Brand strategy. Being able to offer an exclusive range under the prestigious V&B brand widens our portfolio and at price points to capture volume sales at the quality end of the market.” Essential by Villeroy & Boch suites will also be available at two levels of terms; displaying outlets will received the higher level to reflect their support of the product - a change to V&B’s normal showroom policy. All V&B ranges are available to V&B contract partners on request through the Ideal Bathrooms Contract Sales Department. For more information visit www.idealbathrooms.com or call 01908 278500.

When designing a new bathroom, it can be a minefield but, thanks to Ideal Bathroom’s Essential Bathroom Collection, whatever the requirements, it has just got a little bit easier. Following the success of its ceramic suites, the Milton Keynes-based bathroom distributor has extended its Essential range to offer solutions for even the most challenging of projects. The new options include a 45cm slimline basin, with left or right hand single tap hole, and a single tap hole corner basin. Where space is at a premium, the Lily range also includes a new 45cm single tap hole basin. Ideally suited to a smaller bathroom or cloakroom, there is also the choice of a complementary full pedestal or a wall mounted half pedestal that can make the most of a small space.

athroom furniture has become a key ingredient in all bathrooms, en-suites and cloakrooms, and is now an essential element of the bathroom suite,” begins Rob Higgins, Head of Trading (Bathrooms) at PJH Group. “As well as providing storage space to help streamline bathroom spaces, a co-ordinated choice of bathroom furniture pieces unites all parts of the bathroom stylishly and functionally.” This growing trend is behind PJH’s decision to extend the Moods furniture range within its Bathrooms To Love Collection, which now includes new additions to its modular storage range Bello, fitted furniture range Fresco and free-standing range Picasso. New door options for the Bello and Fresco ranges include two new earthy shades - Lava and Cashmere - in a premium high gloss lacquered finish with integrated J-handles. “It’s the ultimate look for a sleek bathroom space,” says Rob. “Grey tones will continue to be big news in 2015. Whilst our Lava fascia boasts luxurious dark grey undertones, our Cashmere option offers a softer and more muted shade of grey,

offering choice and design versatility,” explains Rob. Freestanding bathroom cabinets will also remain a popular seller as we head into next year. PJH’s Picasso painted collection offers a modern take on a classic with its traditional in-frame design and tongue and groove sides. Introducing a new satin grey painted shade to the range, Mist is a subtle grey hue joining the existing Ivory and Pistachio colourways. Quality remains at the heart of all the bathroom furniture solutions from Moods by PJH, with all ranges boasting durable 18mm cabinets, soft-close doors and drawers and a 5-year guarantee. Rob adds, “Today’s bathroom is all about creating a spa-like bathroom zone for total calm and relaxation. small but perfectly formed… Made from a revolutionary ceramic - SaphirKeramik - Laufen’s livingsquare washbasin bowls offers a super slim profile and an extremely narrow radius on the curvature of corners. The thin walls give the livingsquare basins a compact impression from the outside, making them ideal for the cloakroom, whilst the depth of the interior makes them a practical choice too. The basin is available as either a square (360 x 360mm) or rectangular (600 x 340mm) version and with no taphole for a seamless finish. 01530 510007 www.uk.laufen.com New Balterley Bathroom Furniture is designed to make the life of the retailer and the consumer easier. With three cabinet colours and 10 door choices in fitted furniture, along with two depths at 335mm and 235mm, there’s something for all tastes and bathroom sizes. Market Insight “We are seeing strong demand for products that are suitable for compact spaces, both in retail and contract. People’s expectations are increasing thanks to a greater awareness of what can be achieved and products becoming more readily available. “An important sector, thanks to the pressure on space that continues to build, designers and home-owners are always looking for the best solution. Designing a compact bathroom that is a joy to use and does not feel cramped, takes skill and a good knowledge of the

many product solutions available. Retailers can use this to their advantage by providing their customers with the best solution for their individual bathroom project. “The bathroom retailer and bathroom designer has a key role to play in providing the best solution for the space. Retailers can work with manufacturers who offer a wide range of sizes, along with product size adjustment and bespoke product sizing so that they can offer customers the very best option and deliver a finished bathroom that makes the most of limited available space.

“As with all bathrooms, the starting point when creating a compact bathroom should be the requirements of the customer. With the vast range of products available there will be products that can be installed to meet the needs of the household and the limitations of the room - whether that is for bathing, showering or both; it just requires some thought into the best solution.”

Sven Rensinghoff Head of Marketing, Bette.

Ideal for compact en-suites or cloakrooms, the Shift guest unit from VitrA makes a brilliant use of the space underneath the basin. “It’s essential for bathroom manufacturers to provide products designed for their specific purpose whether it’s a cloakroom, en-suite or master bathroom. Take the cloakroom; the basin is generally needed for washing a person’s hands, not the face, so a much smaller basin can be specified.” Darren Paxford - National Sales Manager, VitrA.

Bathroom manufacturer Bette has introduced a shorter length, 150cm version of its top-selling shower-baths, the BetteOcean and BetteOcean Low-Line. The enamelled steel baths have been designed for use as combination baths. With a large lying area and a depth of 45cm, the BetteOcean offers space for a comfortable full bath, while the extremely steep sides at the foot end provide generous standing room. Also available is the BetteOcean Low-Line, with a depth of 38cm, which makes it easier to get in and out for those who mainly shower. With the introduction of the new 150 x 70cm baths, the BetteOcean and BetteOcean Low-Line are both now available in six sizes. 0844 800 0547 www.bette.co.uk

Roca has introduced In-Tank Meridian - its first system to incorporate the cistern inside the WC pan to save space. The In-Tank features Softair technology - an air injection system in the cistern which optimises water flow. The flush buttons on the side of the WC activate an air pump that emits a flow of air. This pushes water up from the internal cistern to fill the rim of the pan, while the downward flow clears the bowl. Back-to-wall and wall-hung options available. 01530 830080 www.uk.roca.com

The Plaid vanity from Justin Van Breda is suited for compact living with a contemporary edge. British-designed, the piece is handmade and can be ordered with co-ordinating mirrors. Strong lines formed by the brass detailing on the doors echo plaid, check and tartan designs and are in keeping with the Crema Beige Italian stone and Henry UB brassware. Compact and fresh in appearance, the Megan range from Phoenix has been designed for smaller bathrooms. The close-coupled design of the WC brings economy of space and consumption together. With a smaller, integrated cistern, it uses less water per flush than conventional toilets, reducing its impact on the environment as well as your water bill. Market Insight Keith Jobson, Insight Manager of independent living solutions provider AKW, looks at the specific safety challenges experienced in the bathroom by people with dementia:

Creating Dementia-Friendly Bathrooms “With more than 800,000 people in the UK already living with dementia, the industry needs to be ready to accommodate those with dementia by providing safe and easy-to-use bathroom facilities. “Whilst dementia-friendly bathroom must offer safety and protection, familiarity is key. A significant change through adaptation may result in an individual failing to recognise their own bathroom. Similarly, while short-term memory is impaired, people with dementia usually retain good long-term memory, and may therefore be more comfortable with traditional fixtures and fittings rather than modern designs. Push-button flushes or infrared controls, for example, should generally be avoided in favour of familiar-looking handles. “Those with dementia face a fall-related mortality rate three times higher than average. Installing a level-access shower (with non-slip flooring) in preference to a bath reduces the fall risk, as does the inclusion of a shower seat with sturdy arms. Trips can also occur where there is a change in floor colour, as people with dementia often perceive a change in floor colour as a step. The safest solution is therefore a wet room with a consistent floor colour throughout. Flooring with flecks or small patterns, which could be perceived as items that need to be picked up, should also be avoided as it could lead to a fall. “Non-reflective or frosted shower screens may also be required in a minority of cases, as some individuals with dementia lose the ability to recognise their own reflection and believe another person is using the bathroom. For the same reason, mirrors should be capable of being covered. “The increased risk of scalding to people with dementia means thermostatic taps and showers are essential, allowing the temperature to be set at a safe level. For the same reason, low surface temperature (LST) radiators or under-floor heating should be preferred. “Typically, grab rails and toilet seats for those with dementia have always been specified in red as this has been seen as the preferred colour. However, leading design experts, occupational therapists and academics specialising in dementia now agree that this is a myth. In fact, any colour can be used so long as it contrasts strongly enough with the wall behind them. The toilet should be a different colour to the wall behind it, and the seat should be in a third colour to provide a visual reminder to use them. “Products designed for users with dementia don’t cost any more than those needed for a standard adaptation. However, it is imperative that the right products are selected, following the guidelines carefully, to maximise safety and comfort for those with dementia.”

On The Level has produced a bespoke solution for concealed wet floor shower trays. The patented Birch ply underfloor shower formers are easy to install and ideally suited for special needs applications such as care homes, hospitals and specially adapted domestic bathrooms. The formers are BSI approved for a safe load of more than 60 stone (380kg) and its shallow depth of 24mm allows it to fit flush into most floor types. 01525 373202 www.onthelevel.co.uk

future-proof bathrooms With over 10 million people in the UK currently over 65 and latest projections suggesting the number will nearly double to 19 million by 2050, the market for future-proof bathroom products is on the rise. Bushboard’s Nuance range of waterproof laminate wall panels are suitable for level access wetrooms, making them ideal for use in a less able bathroom design. Five different panel options are available offering the design freedom to create wetrooms and level access showering. The panels are 2420mm high in a range of widths and can be fitted from floor to ceiling and are bonded and sealed using Bushboard’s BB Complete adhesive which validates the 15-year guarantee. 01933 232272 www.bushboard.co.uk

Ideal Standard has introduced Concept Freedom, a new range of accessible bathroom products which aims to include less abled customers, rather than alienate them, through a collection of ceramics, brassware and showers that are elegant and functional. The range incorporates products that allow the specifier to create fully Part M compliant en-suites, demonstrating how wheelchair accessible bathrooms can be as contemporary and beautiful as conventional bathrooms. This new solution has been developed to meet the needs of the less abled, in conjunction with occupational therapists, whilst maintaining the design integrity of Robin Levien’s Concept suite. 01482 346461 www.ideal-standard.co.uk

“Until recently, many accessible bathrooms were designed for their functionality rather than their looks. As a result, customers have developed a perception that accessible bathrooms, whilst functional, lack aesthetic design credentials. But now we’re creating bathrooms that are designed with accessibility in mind but still creating a beautiful use of space.” Tony Rheinberg - Marketing Manager, Ideal Standard.

The new e100 range of sanitaryware from Twyford features modern design with both round and square washbasins which are available with either full pedestal, semi pedestal, or as a counter-top option. Many of the e100 toilets are available with the extra-hygienic Rimfree® option and Flushwise™ water-saving technology. They are available with a varied seat selection including a new range of ‘quick release’ soft close seats complete with antibacterial finish. It also features a wall-hung toilet and seat with a longer 700mm projection, whilst the wall hung washbasins also provide ease of access. 01270 879777 www.twyfordbathrooms.com

“In my capacity as an occupational therapist, I have been concerned with the aesthetics, functionality and safety of most products available to the disabled and grey markets for many years. To be part of the development process with a leading manufacturer [Impey] has allowed to me share my views and create a product that elderly or disabled people will actually want to use.” Elaine Hollerhead - Occupational Therapist.

AKW has added a new dimension to its product portfolio by introducing a range of heating products. Branded AKW iCare, the range offers a choice of low surface temperature (LST) models, which the company promotes as a ‘touch safe’ option for any bathroom. The range comprises of an electric towel rail and two radiator types; one electric, the other a wet central heating radiator. All are designed to maintain an external temperature at no higher than 43° to meet the NHS Safe Surface Temperature Guidelines and thanks to a digital adjustable thermometer it’s simple to use. 01905 823298 www.akw-ltd.co.uk

-proof ooms “Over the last 12 months, we have noticed an increase in the number of enquiries from customers wishing to make their showering safer and easier at home. They all have one thing in common: they want to have a beautifully designed bathroom that provides discreet extra support when they need it without turning their home into something that resembles a care home.” Leanne Robey - Senior Designer, Ripples.

The HEWI 815 Range from Ripples combines comfort with modern, minimalistic design. The HEWI seat is made of high-quality glass fibre and reinforced polyamide. With no additional substructure, the seat is free from awkward folding legs. The underside of the seat has a smooth surface - easy for cleaning, and when folded up is only 66mm deep. s a non-wheelchair user, you can only imagine the problems a lessable person could face in the bathroom, but when that person is a sevenyear-old girl with Dystonic Cerebral Palsy, the task of fitting a bathroom that not only meets her requirements now but in years to come is no mean feat. “Pressalit Care was the only choice for us,” begins Jonathan Gould, when asked about his decision to fit a new bathroom for his disabled daughter, Brooke. “We’ve had to adapt our house to make Brooke’s life easier. We had already widened the doors and hall when we were first introduced to Pressalit Care at the Naidex exhibition. After seeing the products available to us, we knew the next step was to fit a bathroom that Brooke could enjoy using for years to come,” adds Jonathan. Pressalit Care’s horizontal PLUS track system was installed in the Gould’s family bathroom. Designed to ensure greater freedom for users in both large and small bathrooms, it ticked the box for the family and offered vital independence for Brooke. Featuring soft, rounded edges, the wallmounted track has been designed to allow easy movement of the different bathroom elements. Andrew Lowndes of Pressalit Care explains, “The horizontal track makes it possible to move products along the wall,

34 • KITCHEN AND BATHROOM JOURNAL DECEMBER 2014

making space for wheelchair access for example, while the vertical track enables easy height adjustment. Several elements can be fitted safely onto the track such as a basin, shower seat, toilet and arm supports.” The Matrix washbasin was also installed to complement the sense of freedom given by the track system. Offering features to help with the practicalities of independent use, it features two rounded integrated handrails cast into a shallow, marble bowl. It can be used either for support, or when not used in this way, as a towel rail. “The results speak for themselves,” explains Jonathan. “Brooke now has space to play with her toys in the shower area and, as she continues to grow, the bathroom can adapt to her needs. We have been blown away with the quality of the Pressalit Care products. They are superb.” Andrew adds, “At 7 years of age it’s so important for a child to be independent and confident. Getting everything right first time, and ensuring it will meet Brooke’s needs for future years, has been an important part of the work. We are thrilled that our products have made a world of difference to Brooke and her parents. Her determination to get on in life is an inspiration to all those around her.” For more information call 0844 880 6950 or visit www.pressalit.com

hy settle for less when you can have more? More style, more practical benefits and more flexibility are just some of the features Balmorals’ accessible bathroom range offers. Versatile and adaptable, the range has been designed to be fully multi-generational without compromising on style, quality or value. “Our products are distinctive,” begins Malcolm Chappell, Managing Director of Balmorals. “The contemporary POSH WC is a great example of what we do and how a stylish product can be used by the whole family in any bathroom. It has been designed with a higher than average seat height but thanks to a compact WC projection of just 650mm, it can be fitted in the smallest of bathrooms. It is this type of design flexibility that has been lacking in multi-generational bathroom design, until now.” Designed to be interchangeable, the POSH range can be used alongside Balmorals’ unique dual-purpose 580mm basin and styled with a range of wall hung or freestanding Satin White or Black furniture. The result: an on-trend bathroom that offers all the practical features associated with today’s accessible bathing market. “Our focus is on creating bathroom products that offer both contemporary styling and comfort. It is at the forefront of what we do and we’re proud to have created a range that is sustainable for use by the whole family,” adds Malcolm. Additional domestic and commercial WCs are also available from Balmorals I.CARE brands, together with a range of LABC Approved Doc M packs. All WCs have been WRAS tested & approved, carry CE Certification and are LABC Approved. Market Insight • What are the most popular and the latest products in this sector? Some of the most popular products in the wellness sector are hot tubs and swim spas, which are commonly associated with therapeutic therapy and exercise. These are affordable products which allow individuals a segue into the home wellness category. At the other end of the spectrum, and for those looking for a more rounded and holistic wellness offering within their home, Salt, Steam, Shower, Ice, and Sauna Cabins give clients the benefit of a professional spa facility at home. As the market matures and consumers become aware of products such as steam shower cabins, salt cabins and saunas, we expect to see further demand from selfbuilders and independent consumers. • Is there extra profit in products which promote relaxation and wellbeing? I think there is a great opportunity to generate strong growth and profits based on the current trend for healthy living from consumers. Products that are integral to promoting a healthy lifestyle and form part of a holistic lifestyle strategy in the home are a great convenience. Our homes are no longer places where we eat and sleep, they have become areas within which we entertain, exercise and relax, and any quality product which fits into this category I expect to see deliver success in terms of profitability. • Are spas, saunas and steam rooms becoming more affordable? If you look at the wellness industry as a whole, I would say yes. With the surge in popularity of spas, hot tubs and swim spas, these premium spa products are becoming affordable and can range anywhere from £5,000 - £20,000, making them hugely accessible to a wide consumer socio-demographic. This affordability is reflected in the Steam cabin and Sauna category too. A base model two-seater sauna cabin can start at £13,000.
