MARKET INSIGHT
ass
The market for premium kitchens is showing growth of 10% year on year but how can retailers capitalise on this niche market? “The recession created an hour glass effect, with the mid market squeezed and growth coming from the top and bottom of the market,” begins Simon Bodsworth, Managing Director of Daval. “Premium kitchens are very much in demand but customers are still looking for value for money and the ability to personalise their homes to make it more individual and unique to them.” It sounds simple enough, but with the average sales price of around £30,000, how can kitchen retailers offer greater value for money? “When it comes to kitchen design, invest time in your design,” says Gordon Boyd, Nolte Küchen Area Sales Manager Northern Region UK. “The taste for short-lived modern trends in the premium market is fading in favour of solid timeless designs.” “To guarantee a design that ticks every box for your client, designers need to be able to prepare photorealistic CAD drawings and samples to accompany any 2D plans and elevations. They bring the designs to life and ensure that the client understands exactly what they will get before we start manufacturing,” explains Robert Burnett, Head of Design for Holloways of Ludlow. “It’s this kind of service that not only alludes to value for money but also allows individuals to be given choices and the flexibility to design a space that is unique to them,” Robert explains. As well as personalised designs, visual prompts offer a strong impact on many consumers. “A showroom should aim to inspire visitors,” explains Gordon Boyd. “Customers at this level are very much interested in lifestyle and entertaining and so I would recommend showing complementary living room and dining room furniture so that customers get the same feeling in the showroom as they would at home,” adds Simon Bodsworth. “By paying equal attention to elements such as storage, appliances, lighting and furniture, whilst offering readily available samples, customers can then put their own design together and make their individual ideas possible.”

MARKET INSIGHT How has the market for sinks and taps performed year-on-year? “Undermount sinks continue to be the most popular choice in the premium and midmarket due to the prevalence of granite, solid surface and composite worksurfaces, while for cost reasons an inset sink is still the best seller at entry level. Top end consumers are looking for design differentiation, which is why flushmounting has grown strongly as a sink trend. In terms of taps, boiling water taps continue to grow in popularity for consumers looking for lifestyle-enhancing features.” Steve Rutter Marketing Operations Manager, Franke.

Take a holistic approach to design with the latest sinks and taps on the market. 1. The Largo LAX 211-W-36 low-profile Workcentre sink from Franke features two integral and removable bins for enhanced functionality. Another unique feature is the push-button pop up waste which automatically pushes up the strainer basket to drain the sink without the need for wet hands. 0161 436 6280 • www.franke.com
4. Pictured in Glacier White, Corian® has created a seamlessly integrated side fascia, worktop and spacesaving hidden sink solution. Including a push-down tap and a Corian® cover for when not in use, it offers a hygienic wet-area that is stain-resistant, durable and renewable. 0800 962 116 • www.dupont.co.uk
2. The GROHE Red® system keeps three litres of filtered kettle hot water ready for immediate use at all times. WRAS approved for all installations and with a 5-year guarantee, the tap features CoolTouch, ChildLock and has energy saving credentials. 0871 200 3414 • www.grohe.com/uk
5. The Tuscan Sink Range from IDS boasts a 1.5 bowl premium stainless steel inset. With flush-mounting a growing trend, the square premium stainless steel inset guarantees a stylish finish with the easy installation of an inset sink. Available ex-stock for delivery in 24 hours. 08457 298 298 • www.idsurfaces.co.uk
3. Nevada by Reginox features a standard single and 1.5 bowl and incorporates a smooth integrated drainer. The sink can be produced to any bespoke size and bowl configuration on request, with customers able to specify how many bowls they would like and exactly where they would like them to be placed. 01260 280033 • www.reginox.co.uk
6. The Seraphina hot water boiling tap from Carron Phoenix delivers instant boiling water at 100ºC. It offers hot, cold and boiling water from a single tap and benefits from a water conditioning filter which ensures boiling water is free of sediment, odours and unwanted particles. It can be fitted new or retrospectively, fits underneath a 150mm plinth and requires a single standard-sized 35mm tap hole. 0161 436 6280 • www.carron.com
What are the latest designs on the market? “Stainless steel continues to be a big seller when it comes to kitchen sinks and taps as it creates such a modern look which fits with lots of kitchen styles, and it’s also very practical and long-lasting. Composites offer consumers versatility when it comes to colour and texture options, plus they’re durable and resistant.” Iain Entwistle Product Marketing Manager, Astracast. What are the most common mistakes that retailers/designers make when specifying a sink or tap and how can they be overcome? “As 60% of time spent in the kitchen is at the sink it’s important to take a holistic approach to design, looking at the needs of the customer in terms of what they want to get out of their sink and tap, rather than simply recommending the latest designs.” Steve Rutter Marketing Operations Manager, Franke. What are manufacturers offering at the top end of the market to differentiate their products? “As technology and product choice on worktops widens and material options, once not considered, are becoming much more affordable, it opens the door to what sinks can be accommodated within the kitchen. There has also been a move in terms of finishes and colours used, with an increase in granite sink sales. Plus, with the continued monochrome trend, you see consumers either marrying their sink and tap finishes or using the tap as a finishing style statement and opting to add a splash of colour and personality to the room.” Helen Clark Marketing Manager, Abode.

The Lucet LUC/CH electronic tap from Caple features a colour-changing LED, which indicates the temperature. Finished in polished chrome, it features an electronic valve with a single control design. MARKET INSIGHT Is capacity king when it comes to kitchen cooling? “Capacity is definitely moving up the consumer buying agenda and deeper doors remain a crucial consideration for many. But we’re finding additional cooling features are the driving force behind product upgrades. “Innovation has revolved around creating quieter, more energy efficient products, and this is something that continues to drive the future of cooling technology. There is also an up and coming trend for in-door LED digital displays and internal lighting which manufacturers are responding to.” Steve Macdonald Trade Marketing Director of Freestanding Division, Hoover Candy UK. What are manufacturers offering at the top end of the market to differentiate their appliances? “Technology is probably the key criteria used to differentiate between low, mid and top ends of the market in the cooling sector. The latest technology trends in the cooling market tend to be aimed at food preservation which destroys bacteria, mould and odours and allows the creation of a natural microclimate in the refrigerator. Likewise advanced sensor technology that keeps track of the user’s habits, and lowering the temperature prior to periods of frequent door opening.” Stuart Benson National Sales Manager, Gorenje UK. Are wine coolers and chillers becoming more widely accessible? “We predict major growth in wine cooling as it duly filters from the top end
through to the mainstream market. Very rarely do people have the perfect conditions to store fine wines in their homes. This presents a huge opportunity for manufacturers and retailers alike. “The important aspect of a wine cooler is to explain its features, and why it differs from a standard fridge. The ideal temperature for food storage is often different to wine. The introduction of ‘dual temperature’ wine coolers an LED displays also leads to an attractive talking point. We advise that smaller freestanding versions are placed prominently where customers will notice them, as this is one appliance that people do not think they need until they see one...” Owain Harrison Marketing Director, Baumatic. What should retailers and kitchen designers consider when specifying a wine chiller, fridge and freezer? “Consumers rarely see their appliances empty - they are normally always stocked with food and drink. Therefore it’s a great idea for shop floor models to be dressed in order to bring the appliance to life and really highlight the features that are important to consumers. For example, having wine bottles or replica food is a great way for customers to visualise the fridge, freezer or wine cooler in their own home. Plus try to get as many appliances plugged in as possible to really showcase all the innovative features and technology.” Andrew Wasdell Product Manager: Food Preservation, Electrolux.

Making up 35% of the market, solid surfaces are coming out on top for consumer confidence and desirability.
“W
hen it comes to average investment, I am pleased to admit that consumers are far more discerning these days, especially when it’s more commonplace to spend upwards of £25,000 for a new kitchen,” begins Matt Rotherham, Commercial Director of J Rotherham. Natural stone provides kitchen designers with a platform to satisfy this demand and, accordingly, offers designers the chance to specify materials slightly more out of the box. Matt adds, “Most consumers will look to budget approximately one-third of their kitchen spend on the worktop, applicable to a mid-range kitchen spend.” “When you consider the price of laminate, upgrading to solid stone can often feel like owning your first BMW,” says Richard Barrett, Sales Director of QFD. “You spend more money initially but its build quality and performance will see it last much longer. It’s also a fantastic statement symbol.” With consumers becoming more educated to the benefits of hardy worksurfaces, the market is growing, with Max-Top UK expecting solid work surfaces to continue to account for around 35 per cent of the market. “30mm is by far the most popular choice for worktop thickness. There are no design limitations with this thickness,” says Matt Rotherham. “With a solid 15 or 30mm worktop you can fabricate any shaping designs, whereas the thick 40100mm mitred worktops have to be linear.” There is, however, the assumption that minimalist worktop profiles best suit contemporary kitchen interiors,
with more robust thicker designs playing to a traditional aesthetic. “I would agree in part,” says Matt. “However, interior schemes with multi-generational styles are becoming more popular, with consumers blending both classic and modern designs to create one interior scheme. An eclectic assemblage of simplified kitchen cabinetry, teamed with a traditionally robust worktop is something homeowners are now requesting.” When it comes to the differentiating between top-end and more affordable products, Chris Pepper, Marketing & Business Development Manager of CR Laurence, says it’s in the detail. “The top end of the market has seen a small but influential collection of surfaces that recreate the beauty and tactility of natural materials such as stone, marble and granite, with amazing realism. This details sets them above the rest,” he adds. However, middle-market products are using green credentials to their advantage, with consumers more aware than ever of the importance of using eco-friendly products. “With everyone becoming more globally aware, it is no surprise that companies are becoming more eco-conscious,” admits Matt Rotherham. “A stone worktop made in China and delivered to the UK will travel up to 18,420 miles, making a large carbon footprint compared to those closer to home.” Chris Pepper adds, ”If in doubt look out for the ISO 14001 stamp which is the international standard for environmental preservation regulations.”

Sizing Up The Market D
oes size matter? For TheSize - the Spanish manufacturer of Neolith - the launch of its 3.20m x 1.50m slab offers a new and exciting opportunity for the kitchen design market. Designed for the most demanding kitchen interior applications in mind, Neolith’s sintered compact surface is ideally suited to worktops, splashbacks, upstands, sinks, flooring, wall cladding and furniture. A cost-effective alternative to natural stones, coppers, concrete and wood, it offers a near-zero porosity, preventing the absorption of liquids and making the product hygienic, stain resistant, easy to clean and impervious to chemicals. The product is lightweight and easy to install and is also resistant to heat, scratches, abrasion, and wear and tear making it an ideal solution for kitchen surfaces. “Already a popular material for its practical benefits and natural qualities, the new large slab size allows for wall to wall applications, minimising the number of joints and, in the process, creating a seamless surface that further enhances the hygienic
properties and minimalist aesthetics of the surface. It also helps to create other stunning design features such as large kitchen islands, whilst reducing waste,” explains Mar Esteve, Marketing Project Manager at TheSize. The introduction of the Neolith Digital Design (NDD) decoration technique has revolutionised the possibilities of colour and texture prints on sintered surfaces, which has seen the range expand to 45 decors and push the boundaries of what colours and textures are possible from compact surfaces. Mar adds, “As well as offering outstanding mechanical properties in terms of compaction, resistance and durability, its designs resemble the way natural stone forms over thousands of years, in just hours. It is a true art form.” Available in three thicknesses - 3mm, 6mm, and 12mm - with optional fibreglass backing and nine formats from 600 x 300mm to 3200 x 1500mm, Neolith has proved that size really does matter when expanding application possibilities.
TheSize showcases its latest Neolith collection, with the addition of new decors and a super-size slab.

magine having the freedom and flexibility to develop limitless designs and make even the most ambitious ideas become a reality. With the introduction of HI-MACS®, your only restriction is your imagination. Quickly being recognised as a new generation of solid surface material, the HIMACS® Acrylic stone compound - which is distributed exclusively in the UK by James Latham - can be machined and thermoformed to almost any 3D shape required. Its uniformity allows this stone to be worked like wood and create perfectly imperceptible joints, so even large-area installations have the appearance of one seamless application. HI-MACS® is also easy to maintain and extremely sanitary, adapting to the most demanding needs in either a commercial
or domestic environment. The non-porous, completely smooth and seamless surface makes it the best possible base for germfree areas. Plus it holds an LGA Hygiene certificate that meets stringent criteria where specific aspects of it are assessed, including ease of cleaning and resistance to bacteria and fungi. In addition, the testing also rates the design from a hygiene point of view, distinguishing HI-MACS® as a first-class product. Supplied in thicknesses of 12mm, 9mm and 6mm, HI-MACS® is available in over 100 colours and with a number of new additions for 2015, the portfolio now includes 22 sink designs available in over 60 colours. Cutting Edge Sarah Creighton
“D
esign is extremely individual,” explains Armatile’s designer, Sarah Creighton, when asked where she finds the inspiration to create her surface designs. “There always will be a fascination with trends and, like all designers, I take note of them too, but a design should always reflect you.” It is this personal approach that has seen Northern Ireland’s Armatile continue to create intricate tile designs and mosaic surfaces for over 40 years. Using water-jet technology to create precise designs to any scale and a range of specialist equipment to produce custom finishes, the company draws on heritage to create its unique designs. Using and combining ceramics, natural stone, metals and glass, Sarah and her team create striking, bespoke designs for use in commercial and residential projects. “We work on a vast range of projects with very different specifications. This is reflected in the materials we use and the way we use them,” explains Sarah. Commissioned to restore a number of churches, Armatile has transformed traditional mosaic flooring and marble steps with impeccable detail. And its work in the hospitality and retail sector has seen fresh, modernistic designs being explored. “Whilst detail is key when working with traditional designs, texture can play a large part in modern surface design,” explains Sarah. “My most recent design is the experimental cube. It uses a selection of textures, colours and materials to create a contrast that alludes to depth. Similar to geometric designs that repeat shapes and patterns to capture the imagination by creating rhytms and a sense of flow, it explores different dimensions thanks to its texture.” It’s this ability to explore new directions that makes the Irish surface specialists continue to fulfill the needs of both the commercial and residential market and with several large projects in the pipeline, 2015 is set to be a busy year for the team at Armatile.

T
wo years since it was first launched, TKC’s mid-market Vivo door range has become one of the company’s best-selling collections, due to its resilient design and competitive price point. Featuring high-gloss, painted slab doors from Italy, the Vivo range has been designed to reflect current consumer trends. Available in four hues - Vivo White, Vivo Cashmere and the newly added Vivo Grey and Vivo Ivory - the range illustrates how the same kitchen can achieve four very different looks. “Vivo Grey epitomises modern living,” explains Jitendra Mistry, Design Manager at TKC. “With its bold lines, it brings a fresh and contemporary look to any home, whilst the equally stylish Vivo Ivory combines sophistication with a classic colour to achieve a timeless finish.” Available in a range of stock and bespoke sizes that can be accentuated by co-ordinating straight and curved cornices, the inclusion of pan drawers and curved doors can add a further air of exclusivity, whilst careful attention to painted door edges ensures a high quality finish. Jitendra adds, “The mid-market is important to us and the new Vivo additions perfectly demonstrate how a sleek designer look can be created on even a modest budget.”

A Record Breaker T
he big freeze of 2013 was a thing of the past with 198,000 visitors feeling the heat in Germany’s biggest bathroom trade fair. Breaking a new exhibitor record and with increased numbers of international visitors, ISH 2015 was once again brimming with innovation and a hub of excitement. No longer feeling the pinch, bathroom manufacturers were out to impress. Scandinavian design held a strong influence over many new designs. Simple, minimalistic shapes have filtered through the market but can no longer be described as cold or industrial. Instead, they are inspired by architectural shapes that don’t boast perfect symmetry. Prototypes are instead offering character in the form of flowing shapes and slim lines. This new trend has inspired bathroom furniture manufacturers to get in touch with their dark side. Dansani, Victoria and Albert and VitrA were not alone showcasing sultry, dark colour tones in their furniture collections. Wengi, walnut and matt black took its place amongst the white gloss and glass to accompanying the clear trend for organic design to perfection.
Whilst most exhibitors stayed away from bright, pop-art colours, the use of lighting was still a key talking point. Not content with recessed or integrated lighting, manufacturers including Schlüter-Systems displayed illuminating back-lit panels which could be fitted behind a bath or shower. With the added flexibility to adjust the colour and light temperature, you have the flexibility to create a different ambiance at will. Add the latest light-up shower heads and sensor-controlled LED mirrors into the mix and lighting has never been more personalised. Innovation has certainly played a large part in the success of ISH 2015 and with estimates from the Ifo Institute for Economic Research suggesting a 2% rise in the bathroom sector this year, the bathroom industry is on its way to a full recovery. And with 618 new exhibitors at the show, ISH has once again upheld its title as the world’s leading trade fair for the sector. ISH 2017 will be held in Frankfurt am Main from 14 to 18 March 2017. K&BJ will be there. Will you?

ocol is a 60-year-old Brazilian tap manufacturer that’s looking for representation in the UK. Showing for the first time at ISH, Docol is a specialist in low pressure but with plenty of self-closing taps for the UK market. Docol’s range includes hydro-mechanical self-closing taps and this beautifully curved, graceful capacitive fuelled tap which senses electrical energy and incorporates a ‘smart off’ function which is perfect for commercial applications. “One of the big advantages is that it’s less sensitive than infra-red because the whole of the metal part is sensitive,” explains International Business Manager, Fernando Herkenhoff. “Any part of the tap can become the fuel.” Potential agents/distributors should call Fernando.

Innovation is Key “I
often get asked what makes VitrA stand out from the crowd,” begins Darren Paxford, National Sales Manager at VitrA. “To me, it’s simple. We believe innovation is standard.” That phrase certainly rang true when 10. - 14. 3. 2015 touring VitrA’s impressive 1,000 sq m stand. Displayed between eye-catching prototypes that were the result of the bathroom manufacturer’s clever collaborations with top designers, it showcased several new product ranges that are set to launch in the UK in the coming months. Its new V-Care WC took centre stage. The futuristic toilet - which offers a selection of washing options for personalised hygiene via a remote-control handset - has been designed with a nozzle that can adjust water temperature, pressure and position for ultimate comfort. Cleverly, the nozzle automatically self-cleans before and after each use to allow for multiple users and, with a heated seat and auto-close lid, maximum comfort is assured. VitrA’s stand also included a new range of concealed cisterns and cistern plates. With a depth of only 8 or 12cm and built to support the weight of up to 400kg, the slim design is ideally suited to compact bathrooms. Plus, with the added benefit of a double flushing system that can be set to a 3/6L or 2.5/4L flush, it boasts impressive water-saving credentials too. As well as extending its Memoria and M-Line sanitaryware range - the latter now offering a complementary set of new furniture - VitrA has welcomed its latest brassware range, Brava. Pentagon Design’s Creative Director Arni Armoaa talked though his design at the show. “The new collection offers super slim design. To begin with, we came up with four unique concepts but Brava stood out thanks to its simplicity. It offers striking, bold design and a formal exploration of shapes. Its thin spouts and handles make it a universal design that can be accepted by all markets. It’s truly a collection to be proud of.” Darren Paxford, National Sales Manager at VitrA, adds, “The ISH exhibition is a fantastic showcase of all the innovative and forward thinking designs that our development team and collaborative designers have been working on. It's truly inspirational and shows that the bathroom can be much more than a functional room, but vibrant, sophisticated and relaxing. We’re so excited about all of the new launches. These new additions complete our portfolio of WC products which means that we can truly provide everything needed to fit a bathroom”.
The V-Care WC features a self-cleaning bidet nozzle, auto open-close, adjustable water temperature, different washing options, air-drying and odour absorption features. Pictured: Darren Paxford.

ounded in 1873, Kohler is focused on bringing the marriage of form and function back into the bathroom with the introduction of its new Aleo and Aleo+ tap range. Showcased at ISH 2015, the collections - which are suited for use with vanity tops, baths and showers - have been designed to combine functionality with eyecatching design, but has the bathroom manufacturer succeeded? Its flat surfaces, geometric profiles and softened lines certainly provide a modern flair that would sit easily in the British bathroom. Each design has its own personality and with the addition of its slender shaping, narrow levers and overall sleek aesthetics, it ticks the box for contemporary design. But its selling points are not only skin deep. As well as designing an internal polymer passageway to keep water away from metal parts of the taps and keep the water flow consistent, the tap’s aerator which can be found at the end of the spout can be replaced without a specialty tool. In fact, it has been designed to allow users to remove it with a coin - a fuss-free design that can help end-users with perceived water pressure and unwanted splashing. But the practical benefits don’t stop there. As well as offering a simple to install taps which comes with an anti-twist hoses, each mixer has been engineered to limit flow to five litres per minute, increasing water efficiency proving that form and function can be achieved. Impressed? I thought so.

The real steel K
aldewei unveiled its biggest-ever booth at ISH 2015 in order to promote the company’s first ever washbasin made from Kaldewei steel enamel. With the introduction of this new segment, bathrooms can now be styled using a single material and a matching colour scheme that can flow from the shower surface and bath through to the washbasin. “With this new expansion we are transferring the superior qualities of Kaldewei steel enamel - stability, hygiene and ease of cleaning - from the proven Kaldewei shower surfaces and bathtubs to washbasins. This is not only logical but also fulfils the expressed wish of leading architects, property decision-makers and developers,” explains Franz Kaldewei. Matching washbasins have been designed to coordinate with Kaldewei’s current collections - Puro, Cono and Centro - whilst designer Arik Levy has extended his Meisterstücke premium range with a free-standing bath and matching washbasin series.

uravit’s new 2015 bathroom range – which was showcased at this year’s ISH - has been inspired by the need for comfort and the strong trend towards more individuality. Staying true to its ‘more individuality, more comfort, more you,’ concept, its new ME by Starck collection addresses the need for originality in the home. Designed by French designer, Philippe Starck, the minimalist design places the person and their sense of style at the centre of the bathroom. Six washbasin solutions, toilets and a urinal make up the range that boasts a recurring, slender rim and a
balanced sense of proportion. New technology has also seen a Duravit first: the ME by Starck rimless urinal. The open design of the flushing rim, which has been designed exclusively for the new collection, ensures a powerful flow of water that rinses the entire inner surface of the urinal, while also simplifying cleaning. This, partnered with the collection’s reduced weight, attachmentfree toilets and bidets, sees the range focus closely on the user’s comfort. Bathtubs, shower trays and accessories complete the collection, turning the desire for individualisation into reality.

Featuring great aesthetics and installation that's as easy as a normal floor drain, CleanLine shower channels are equally suitable for use in new buildings and renovations. Installation kits are available in two construction heights: for a screed build-up at the inlet of either 65mm or more, or 90mm or more. The latest CleanLine channel provides trend-setting sanitary technology - from the high discharge rate of the flat trap and the well-tested installation and sealing technology right through to the function and shape of the shower channel itself. And what's more, the short inlet connector cover with integrated comb insert can be removed and cleaned in no time at all. CleanLine is available in brushed stainless steel in three different variants and in lengths of either 0.9 or 1.3metres which can be cut on site.

MARKET INSIGHT

What products are proving popular with British consumers? “Bespoke shower enclosure solutions has seen the greatest activity at the top end of the market, where demand for shower enclosures to fit into an overall bathroom design has shown a big increase. Wetroom panels have been supplemented with hinged panels to provide better splash protection and colours have entered the bathroom after years of beige and grey.” Nicholas Cunild Commercial Director, Matki. What advice do you have for retailers who want to offer a bespoke solution to their customers? “We advise retailers to use products and materials that are easy to customise, such as backer boards that can accept a variety of available finishes, and for the retailer to be able to offer clients a wide array of finishes, patterns and formats. Flexible joints and connectors are also particularly important for plumbing products, along with good quality substrates and services that ensure top quality finishes and fittings are not compromised by lesser quality hidden components.” Ged Ferris Marketing Manager, Cembrit. Will the market continue to grow into next year? “With replacement shower sales now accounting for around 60-70% of the UK market, combined with an ageing population adapting their homes to suit changing needs, there is a growing demand for inclusive bathing solutions. Going forward, we predict there will be continued growth in this area of the market and collaborations with Occupational Therapists will help to develop new designs and achieved various care and safety accreditations as a result, including BEAB Care, Kitemark and the CE Mark.” Steve Saunders Senior Technical Manager, Triton.

MARKET INSIGHT

Sara Wells from Doca UK talks about how modular design is evolving in the home: “The term ‘modular’ simply refers to structured, orderly, repeated patterns; no motifs and certainly no floral prints. Modular furniture designs all follow strict, organised rules and therefore the result is always bold and crisp. However homeowners don’t seem to be put off by the rigidity of this trend, as it is still extremely versatile playing to all types of traditional and modern bathroom interiors. As such, consumers and designers alike are having fun with size and shape and adding depth of design by mixing one style in opposing formats. “We are seeing the combination of both big and small squares throughout different pieces of furniture to give the bathroom space a heightened sense of identity for the end user. One thing to remind the homeowner is that modular shapes can sometimes appear formal and masculine. This is all well and good if that’s the look of the brief but if not, a softer more balanced aesthetic can be achieved with selective light and gentle shades. “The most popular choice right now is opting for a mix of juxtaposing materials, white, taupes or warm greys, teamed with rich wood veneers, textures/patterned laminates and polished chrome or brushed steel accessories. When it comes to material, matt lacquers with tactile finishes and interesting veneers remain a popular choice. By incorporating textured and highly visual finishes, such as rubberised effect lacquers, steel splash guards or matt/gloss glass cabinets, will instantly add texture and interest to the simplistic style of modular design.”

Technology Talks
The very latest technology on the bathroom market.
MARKET INSIGHT Which aspect of technology is attracting most consumer attention? “LED lighting is changing the face of today’s bathroom design. In a very short period of time we have moved from beautiful mirrors with integrated lighting to cabinetry and shelves that include innovative motion sensor lighting options. Today’s bathrooms are about creating the ultimate space for relaxation and harmony and the latest lighting concepts do just that. By simply tapping a button, you can select between different mood lighting. Think of LED lighting as the modern equivalent to the candle lit bath.” Wayne Dance Managing Director, InHouse. What are the latest technologically advanced bathroom products on the market? “Mirrors are a perfect example of the way bathrooms have embraced the technology trend. With hi-tech products playing an ever bigger part in most peoples lives, leading brands now offer mirrors that are so much more than just a piece of glass. Not only do they look sleek and stylish, they are also practical light sources, with many featuring lowenergy LEDs operated by no-touch infrared switches. High-end products feature fully-integrated digital displays with touch-sensitive
controls and wireless Bluetooth® technology with an integrated stereo speaker system so that users can listen to the radio or music from their smart phone or tablet while brushing their teeth or washing their face. Nowadays, many mirrors also boast built-in heated demister pads to ensure the glass remains steam free regardless of how hot and humid the bathroom gets.” Trevor Brinkman Product Designer, Roper Rhodes. Is the desire for technology in the bathroom all about making life easier or is there more behind it? “It’s too simple to consider technology in bathrooms as the latest ‘must have’ or simply something to make life easier. The irony is that technology in bathrooms is about spending more time in them, not less. We live in increasingly stressful times and recognising the importance of creating that sense of wellbeing is a real shift in thought process. This is not superficiality or indeed more practicality, it is a critical element in reducing stress and creating the perfect environment to relax. Bathing has been used as a form of relaxation since Roman times, yet our bud to create aesthetic spaces - we had merely forgotten its importance.” Wayne Dance Managing Director, InHouse.
