editor's choice First previewed at MOW last Autumn, Pronorm’s new Crystal cream high gloss door and Venezia woodgrain hit the two key trends of the moment. The Crystal colour centres on a pale ivory that will work with a selection of woodgrains such as textured Rift Light Oak and the delicately bleached Venezia woodgrain shown here. “While strong contrast is a key look at the top end, the softer tone on tone contrast offered by Crystal and Venezia bring a fresher and more accessible combination that will appeal to a wider audience because it can stand the test of time,” says Jason Grinton, UK and Ireland Business Manager. Crystal is available in a choice of three materials including laminate, gloss laminate and matt lacquer, while Venezia comes in laminate, giving the flexibility for different retail price points. 07801 862691 www.pronorm.de jason.grinton@pronormde.co.uk

A World of Colour from Stoves Stoves and Belling have unveiled a new concept that will give consumers the opportunity to choose from 12 colours on some of the most popular range cookers. Colour Boutique, initially available in Range Centres across the UK, can be applied to all size and fuel variants of the Stoves Richmond and Belling Classic models. Combining four seasonal themes - Fresh Spring, Summer Splash, Autumn Chic and Urban Winter, Colour Boutique offers three fashion led colours from each of the four seasons. The themes offer a mix of brights such as First Bloom, Rolling Countryside and Floral Burst, plus softer shades such as Day’s Break and Wild Berry. “We have seen significant sales increases in range cooking across the Stoves and Belling brands in the last year and we believe that Colour Boutique will help to take the brands to the next level by offering customers a wider choice. We are also delighted to be showcasing Colour Boutique in the Range Centres who have been such loyal supporters of the brand,” says Rob Burton, Commercial Manager for range cookers. 0844 248 4149 www.stoves.co.uk/boutique www.belling.co.uk/boutique

NEW FROM AEG

A

EG’s revamped built in collection includes the brand new Culisense - an oven that really does meet every cooking need. Featuring the new, intelligent AutoCook function and simple NaviSight navigational controls, cooking in this oven is very straightforward and involves just four steps. All the user has to do is select the right auto cook programme, choose the food category, put the food on the shelf the oven has chosen and leave it to do the rest. The oven is self-cleaning, featuring the PyroLuxe program with various options to choose from, depending on how dirty the cavity becomes and it has specially coated AntiStick shelves that prevent grease sticking – a good idea as shelves can’t be pyrocleaned because the heat ruins the chrome finish. The 58 litre oven is also equipped with maintenancefree CleanAir Control to efficiently remove unpleasant smells. The oven also has the easy to use and clean TrueSpit accessory, which gives an authentic spit roast effect with minimal effort. The design of the AEG Culisense oven matches perfectly with the other kitchen appliances in the AEG Neue Kollektion, allowing it to integrate seamlessly into the overall living space. Other key features include ThermiC° hot air cooking, 15 cooking functions and fast heat-up, 'A' energy rating and an IsoFront oven door with quadruple glazing.

Perfect for anyone who wants to update an old style slip in cooker for something more sophisticated, MaxiKlasse cookers from AEG feature induction hobs and multifunction cooking. The main oven has eight functions including Ultra Fan, top heat and bottom heat and will take a large turkey with ease. There’s no pyro – a mistake we think – but both ovens have CataLuxe catalytic liners. The cooker is AA energy rated and comes with a five year guarantee.

cookers for cooks

As a nation we do more looking at and reading about cookery than actually doing it but there is a core of consumers who really love to cook and want an oven that will deliver the best possible results. We’ve selected the best available for the next would be Delia or Heston that walks through your showroom door.

Atag’s top of the range DX6211Q multifunction oven is really two ovens in one because it can be divided. Each section has its own fan system and controls and the two can be operated independently with a maximum temperature difference of 80oC. It is possible to use just one compartment if wished. Atag multi function ovens also feature Easy Cook, a fully automatic system that cooks the most popular dishes at the touch of a button. 0208 247 3993 www.atag.co.uk

The newly launched Chef Touch™ from KitchenAid is a sous vide cooking system. Sous vide - French for "under vacuum" - is a method of cooking food sealed in airtight plastic bags in a water bath. The Chef Touch system is actually based around three appliances - a vacuum sealer that packs the food in an airtight bag, a steam oven for cooking and a shock freezer for rapid chilling or storage. It is not real sous vide in the sense that food is cooked very slowly – sometimes for up to 72 hours – in a water bath. 0800 988 1266 www.kitchenaid.co.uk

The DOP895B touch control multifunction ICS pyroclean single oven from De Dietrich has a tilting electronic control panel and is packed with functions. There are ten pre-selected menus for low temperature cooking and the ICA one touch automatic cooking system that makes life really simple. Added to this is the famous De Dietrich pyroclean system and fan auto stop that stops the fan when the door is opened so the user doesn’t get a blast of hot air in the face. 001256 308067 www.dedietrich.co.uk

Jan Orchard Editor Kitchen Journal

“The latest Atag single ovens have features that have been specifically created to be of real benefit to the consumer, helping to deliver better results and making the cooking process easier. Single ovens that offer split oven technology have been a very useful new innovation as they offer increased flexibility and a functionality that the consumer has truly grasped. Multifunction is a must and should include top and bottom heat and fan, economy grill, large surface grill and defrost. Telescopic shelves are useful and safe – they can’t tip and the user does not have to reach into the oven to put food in or take it out. Many premium single ovens offer pyrolytic cleaning – an excellent thing that means the consumer will never have to clean the oven.”

“KitchenAid is not about one oven or appliance, it is more about achieving restaurant perfection when cooking at home. KitchenAid is focused purely on premium end customers, providing unique style and features. For 2011 we have launched Twelix™, a 73 litre single oven with pyro and the Twelix™ system which has two independent semi circular heating elements that can work together or separately. This offers excellent heat distribution and speed of cooking.”

“The reason why pre-programmed recipes are useful is because each recipe is cooked using a range of pre-determined cooking functions which will automatically change during the cooking process to ensure perfect results. The De Dietrich Intelligent Control System (ICS) is total automatic cooking but many ovens feature pre-programmed recipes that require limited manual intervention such as inputting the weight of the food. Using traditional methods you would roast a chicken at 190oC using the fan function for a specified amount of time according to weight. Using ICS all you have to do is choose the poultry option, the oven will suggest the shelf level then you press start. Internal sensors then assess the weight and humidity of the food and determine the oven function needed while displaying the end time on the control panel. The chicken is then roasted using a range of multifunction options including the grill that crisps the skin. Once cooking has ended, the oven turns off automatically.”

“Our SV310 sensor touch single oven takes technology a step further because the automatic functions are accessed by coloured icons on a touch screen. Instead of the usual function and temperature controls, this exciting oven features a touch screen with picture icons to access different cooking functions. There’s a choice of five automatic programmes and a range of user friendly options to allow customised cooking - the user can even choose which heating elements will be used to suit the food being cooked. “The SV310 breaks new ground in bringing an oven with tft touch sensitive technology and user-friendly software to the UK consumer marketplace. The SV310 oven is intelligent, automatically choosing the temperature and cooking time. It offers thoughtful details too. If you want to cook a chicken with some roast potatoes, simply touch the chicken icon and the oven will even let you know part way through the programme the best time to put in the potatoes for perfect results! “The oven’s intelligent software automatically sets all the cooking parameters and cooks the food perfectly. For more specific control, a customised cooking programme can be quickly created in the manual mode. “There are five touch control auto-cook functions (roast meat, chicken, pizza, cake and toast) and five special functions (defrost, dough proving, yogurt making, keeping food warm and plate warming). In addition the SV310 offers a wide range of standard functions, giving ultimate flexibility for the keenest cooks. These include fanned and static cooking, full and half grill options, browning oven and warming oven as well as all the combinations of fan cooking with upper or lower heat, etc. “Consumers can even try before they buy, thanks to a demo mode which makes it easy and safe for the oven to be tried out by the customer in the showroom.”

“ I have owned a lot of ovens in my time from brands ranging from Husqvarna (long gone) to Bosch. Like most consumers who cook a lot, I want all the features, especially pyro – and I want instant, friendly response if it goes wrong. Worst moment ever: a pyro oven that locked on Christmas Day with a turkey inside it and my mother in law in the living room! I was not using pyroclean at the time! My favourite oven of all time was a Hotpoint multifunction with pyroclean – I can’t remember the model number. I think it was probably made in France as it featured a collection of rather bonkers pre programmed recipes that I never used because they were completely off the wall. Sadly the door fell off the Christmas before last and nothing could be done about it as the cavity was warped – and apparently not covered by the extended warranty. Pet hate: shelves that tip and those side shelf supports that take up space and mean a Raymonde Blanc Anolon roasting tin will not fit in the oven. Dream oven: one from a brand that has lovely, helpful service people, is equipped with pyroclean, a stay clean glass door inner, a roast probe, lots of functions, and good, old fashioned heavy chrome grid shelves that don‘t tip and scare me.”

ho’d have thought it? British consumers buying wine chillers! The booze cruise to Calais may be a thing of the past but these days we are buying better wine (in fact we actually spend more money on it than the French) and are more concerned about keeping it in good condition. Once strictly professional, wine chillers are now widely available for domestic use at a wide range of price points.

Right: The award winning Cave 55 from Norcool is a built under big capacity wine cooler featuring a specially designed soft close door system that makes it easy to choose the right bottle. The cooler will hold 55 bottles and has variable temperature settings between 8-12oC in the lower zone and 15-18oC in the upper zone. 00353(0)4590 7600 www.norcool.com Above: Holding 24 bottles and featuring the highly sensitive Sentry System, this chiller from Rangemaster monitors performance to maintain optimal storage conditions for the wine. Other features include an anti vibration system, UV protected glass, telescopic shelving and temperatures between 4.4 and 18.3oC. It is available in stainless steel or black finishes. 0870 755 6485 www.rangemaster.co.uk

Below: Double doors mean it is easy to access the wine in CDA's built under FWC 620 wine chiller. The chiller has two storage zones both with variable temperature settings between 4 and 15oC so users can fill the entire cooler with all whites or all reds and choose the same temperature for both areas or can use the two zones separately with temperature set to suit the wine being stored. Each zone will hold 15 bottles of wine. The cooler is humidity controlled and compressor driven for improved reliability and also to reduce vibrations that might affect fine wines. A red digital display shows the selected temperature and the door has UV protected smoked toughened glass to shield the wine from the harmful effects of sunlight. LED interior lighting and chrome shelves make wines easy to identify and select. The cooler has a stainless steel frame, handle and hinges and a black ventilation plinth. 01949 862010 www.cda.eu

WHAT’S AVAILABLE Above: Miele offers two wine coolers – a built under model and the fully integrated KWT161Vi, which will take 102 bottles. This model has intuitive Dynamic Cooling, touch controls, halogen lighting, individual temperature zones, UV protected glass and an anti vibration system. 01235 554455 www.miele.co.uk

Right: There is a choice of three models in the in-column wine cooler collection from Caple. Storage capacities range from 22 to 46 bottles and the WC6215 has dual temperature zones. All cabinets have beech shelves with stainless steel trim, electronic temperature control, UV protected glass, white LED lighting and an anti vibration system. 0117 938 1900 www.caple.co.uk

The choice ranges from slimline six bottle chillers that make more profitable and practical use of what used to be a tray or towel rail space to large semi professional models that offer a choice of temperatures and storage for a large number of bottles. The basics are a UV protected glass in the door to shield wine from the harmful effects of light, shelves so bottles can be stacked flat (which keeps the wine in contact with the cork, preventing oxidisation). Oxidised wine is known as “corked” and smells and tastes foul. A choice of two or three temperatures means the chiller can be set to suit the wine being stored. Whites and champagne are happy at 7-12oC and reds at 10-16oC. Keeping any wine at too high a temperature can ruin it. Anti vibration technology is essential for fine or expensive reds where jolting can disturb sediment in the bottle. Good wine chillers offer humidity control. This prevents the cork from drying out and shrinking away from the bottle which will allow air to enter and spoil the wine.

MATERIAL MATTERS

sinks & taps Reginox has added two new sizes to its best selling Texas range of stainless steel sinks with eight different options now available. Texas reflects the trend for deeper bowls . With an unusual square waste and overflow that mirror the overall shape and design of the sink, Texas is a good choice for any contemporary kitchen and can be undermounted, integrated or inset. 01260 280033 www.reginox.co.uk

Kitchen sinks come in for a fair amount of punishment, especially in homes without a dishwasher, so it is important to encourage the customer to choose a material that does not stain or scratch easily.

thinking about sinks Every kitchen needs a sink - not just for washing up but also for preparing vegetables, defrosting food and a host of other everyday jobs. The choice of materials, styles and colours has never been larger and there are price points to suit every budget.

The handsome Bowland sink from Shaws of Darwen has a distinctive fluted front. Available in both white and biscuit finishes the Bowland has a central 3in waste outlet suitable for a basket strainer or waste disposer. The Bowland 600 sink is a compact size so can be fitted into smaller kitchens. It is also available in a 797 by 535 by 220mm size with and without a shelf. The tap shelf has pre formed tap holes. 01254 775111 www.shawsofdarwen.com

Composite This modern material is a mix of resin and crushed stone and comes in a wide choice of colours. The choice of styles on the market is mainly contemporary so composite is not the best choice for a classic kitchen. The material is hard wearing, heat and impact resistant but stains from tea and red wine may linger in a hard water areas and can be hard to remove. Ceramic Traditional fireclay is used for chunky, heavy weight Butler and Belfast style sinks while fine fireclay is used for more slim line undermounted and one and a half bowl inset sinks. Fine fireclay sinks are available in white, cream, black and some other colours but traditional fireclay models only come in white and sometimes a bone colour, as the production process makes using colour glazes difficult. Both materials are hard wearing and easy to clean, but the sink can be damaged if a heavy object such as a cast iron pan is dropped into it. Natural stone Natural stone sinks are very popular in the USA but hard to find here other than through reclamation companies. Stone is heavy but non porous so it won’t stain. Synthetic or engineered stone Solid surfacing such as Corian and Silestone can have sinks in the same material seamlessly integrated into the surface. These materials are hard wearing, impact, stain and abrasion resistant but very expensive.

The edge profile on the Mythos slim top from Franke fits almost flush with any worktop to give a sleek, seamless finish. The sink is available in single and one and a half bowl versions and has a square pop up waste, stainless steel strainer bowl and a slide and glide glass panel. 0161 436 6280 www.franke.co.uk.

The stainless steel Blaze sink from Caple is available as a single bowl with drainer or as a one and a half bowl model. It is available right or left handed and has a 90mm waste outlet for a basket strainer waste or waste disposer. It is shown here with the Avel stainless steel tap. 0117 938 1900 www.caple.co.uk

14 • KITCHEN JOURNAL OCTOBER 2011

Stainless steel Stainless steel is the most popular material for sink manufacture. It is hard wearing and easy to clean. Designs range from single, double or one and a half bowl models with drainer to the latest undermounts designed to fit into natural stone or solid surfacing.

Copper Attractive but certainly not a practical choice, copper kitchen sinks date from the days before widespread ceramic production. Styles available are mainly trough or Butler shapes - and prices are high. Copper is non-porous and will not stain in the traditional sense of the word but it will gradually oxidize and develop a patina. That patina initially will not be even and you may have to wait around a year for the full effect. Copper is much softer than stainless steel and scratches easily.

sinks & taps To help consumers to choose the right colour sink to suit the worktop, Blanco has launched the Combicolour Colour Assistant. This concept allows customers to mix and match Blanco sink colour options with a choice of popular worktops in granite, wood and laminate. Rangemaster has announced the launch of a new range of sinks and taps. The range is specifically designed for UK consumers and retailers. As part of the new range the company has developed a new finish called Micro-sheen which enhances the colour of the steel and creates a soft brushed effect. Rangemaster has also introduced a ground edge trim to all stainless steel inset sinks. Every inset sink is supplied with automatically applied sealant and pre-fitted clips, saving installation time. Rangemaster will promote the new sinks and taps on the website via a newly developed online tool called Tap It, which allows customers to browse and match sinks and taps. There are new brochures for sinks and taps and a useful wall chart for retailers. 0870 755 6485 www.rangemaster.co.uk

The new Centinox sink features all the elegance, style and precision engineering Franke is famed for.

Duncan Marr has been with Franke UK since the very beginning.

happy birthday frank A

Franke is celebrating its 100th year and can be credited with re-inventing the British kitchen sink - as MD Duncan Marr recalls.

20 • KITCHEN JOURNAL OCTOBER 2011

s with so many things, being in the right place at the right time with the right product lies at the heart of Franke’s success in the UK. “Back in about 1973, there was actually a shortage of stainless steel sinks,” muses Duncan Marr. “As a result of this, Franke picked up some business here and it encouraged them to look at the market seriously. At that time, it was all drop on sinks here in Imperial sizes – the only British insets were far too small. All of this coincided with the appearance of the first German kitchen suppliers who promptly invented the kitchen retailer by setting up smart showrooms equipped with fabulous kitchens. The trouble was that UK sinks were no use at all for these new kitchens – presenting Franke with a wonderful opportunity.” Being level headed, financially smart and Swiss, Franke seized the new market and tooled up with a UK specific range. “It was a real revolution for the merchant minded UK,” recalls Duncan. “Back then you didn’t really get to choose a sink as such. People like Grovewood supplied the cabinet and sink as one and that is what you got. Franke put sinks on display and offered a choice that was exactly right for the new German kitchens. The next move

was to set up a distribution network because the new kitchen studios did not want to buy from merchants who were, in effect, the competition. Many of those early distributors are still with the company today.“ Clever, well thought-out design has always been a Franke strongpoint. The early sinks had a sliding clip installation system that was much easier to deal with than the British method that involved bolting the sinks to the top. Installation was tricky and it was easy to distort the edge. The real revolution came in 1981 when Franke decided to reinvent the sink. Research revealed that consumers wanted two bowls – but kitchens were not getting any bigger. What Franke did was to rotate the bowl so that it was bigger from back to front than it was from left to right – and today most sinks are designed in that way. “The idea was a massive success in the UK,” says Duncan. “Once we added the accessories, our advertising agent Arthur Wood decided it was time to advertise. The campaign was so distinctive the sinks simply flew off the shelves and people were actually asking for the brand by name.” The other 80s revolution in the sink world was the introduction of colour. “Until

nke Spring Ram came along with Asterite, colour meant enamel which was terrible stuff because it chipped,” Duncan remembers. “There were lots of problems with the early coloured sinks. The surface was quite coarse so limescale would cling to it and stains would cling to the limescale. The other problem was cracking through thermal shock – Christmas was a favourite time for this when people would put a frozen turkey in the sink to thaw then run hot water on to the cold surface with catastrophic results. All of these problems are long gone now. Franke had its own material called Fradura that became Fragranite with the acquisition of Carron Phoenix.” Duncan’s all time favourite Franke product is the recently launched Centinox. “It is a clever design that incorporates some great ideas,” he says. “This is a range that will grow. It is exactly right for modern kitchen designs and reflects the many things that Franke has learnt about the business in the last 100 years.” Centinox is the subject of a high profile international advertising campaign featuring supermodel Heidi Klum and is a sleek, low profile sink with matching tap and accessories that is ideal for contemporary kitchens.

The ultra modern Mythos Fusion sink is designed to offer the ultimate in choice and style.

The sinks can be installed on site by a kitchen fitter and Bushboard offers a free one day training course. Four brand new Crystal designs have been added to the Encore palette, which now totals 14. Available in black, white, cream and glass, the new Crystal designs reinterpret the classic popularity of granite and stone. The designs feature a random opaque chip that gives the surface visual depth. s worktops are usually selected once the door choice has been made, it is vital that the two elements should co-ordinate. Egger’s new range of worktops aims to make the process as simple as possible by presenting door and worktop combination ideas together for the first time. The development of textures such as Egger’s deep linear ST22 finish and the enhanced quality of the reproduction has led to growth in the use of melamine faced chipboard for frontals. The rise of MFC slab doors is a great example of the trend towards adding both value and quality as they offer a premium level look for an entry level price. This gives kitchen manufacturers the potential to increase sales margins in a challenging market. The trend towards mixing and matching woodgrains with uni colours for door fronts has been met with Egger’s latest brown/grey and green/grey palettes that have been designed to work with the company’s latest range of woodgrains. As this trend continues to grow in popularity, particularly within the kitchen market, deciding which colours to combine can be a difficult process. To make it easier, Egger’s design team has put together a number of door suggestions for each worktop in its latest worktop brochure. Egger offers a choice of worktop thicknesses so whether you want a classic 38mm Eurospan® worktop or an ultra contemporary 50mm Eurolight® worktop there is a solution for you. Matching splashbacks and upstands are also stocked in the UK in all 20 decors. The new range comes with a ten year guarantee and the prestigious FIRA Gold Award. In comparison to granite and solid wood, Egger laminate tops are easy to care for and maintain. All Egger worktops are PEFC accredited. Egger aims to support the retailer as much as possible with a brand new worktop portfolio containing A4 laminate samples and large application pictures. This is offered in addition to a 48 page brochure, A4 laminate samples and a point of sale stand containing A4 samples.

Latest storage ideas from component specialists and manufacturers. According to component specialist Blum there has been a notable upturn in the sales of storage fittings over the last few years as consumers and kitchen planners become more aware of the importance of this aspect of the kitchen. Modern storage must be easy to use and Blum has found that Servo-Drive automatic opening of base unit drawers and the automatic opening and closing on the Aventos lift systems for overhead cabinets have proved amazingly popular. The same applies to special units such as Space Corner and under sink drawers for cleaning products. 01908 285700 www.blum.com

mereway kitchens launches new segreto S

egreto - Italian for secret or hidden - is the name for the new J style pull handle door in the best selling finish Pergamon Gloss that will be added to the Cucina Colore collection. The door offers a fresh, sleek look and the extra deep Segreto profile is carefully calculated to provide the perfect ergonomic shape for fingertips to slot easily inside and give just enough leverage to pull the door open with the minimum amount of effort. This latest addition sits perfectly between the Cucina Colore Futura handleless and Lastra ranges, creating a halfway house in both price and design. Segreto is comfortably positioned in a mid price group and brings broad planning flexibility as it sits on the standard Mereway cabinet matrix, has exciting new range components and offers a colour co-ordinated Pergamon Gloss carcass. Segreto offers unlimited design possibilities and style flexibility as it is specially designed to co-ordinate with a selection of other door colours and finishes, particularly bolder choices such as Coco Bolo and Graphite as shown here. It is eye catching in all unit widths, runs or base and wall unit combinations, offering a real opportunity for kitchen design creativity and flair. The real breakthrough with Segreto is the introduction of the new split internal curved door - an exciting new concept for the Cucina Colore range and exclusively available in the Segreto finish. It looks fabulous in any style of kitchen layout, allowing practical yet smooth curved shapes that will really clinch the deal for retailers. A new 48 page brochure and refreshing new websites have also been introduced that include stunning new photography to support the launch, with each shot carefully managed to show the finest elements of the range. “We are excited to launch this new door into our range, and we carefully selected one of our most popular finishes Pergamon Gloss for it,” says Marketing Manager Ginette Crowther. “Segreto sits perfectly between the Futura handleless and Lastra ranges and with a competitive price tag, and the flexibility to mix this new finish with other door styles across Mereway’s Complete and Cucina Colore collections means that this new style is going to be a real winner.” As part of the launch promotion, Mereway offer FOC door replacement for current customers and new display offers for new customers. A Components has over the last 20 years built a strong reputation for quality products, great designs and unrivalled marketing support. The company is well known for listening to what its dealers want, and where it is possible, building customer requests into product development. The latest example of this is the launch of the three new door styles (Knebworth, Tullymore and Broadway) for the Bella range shown here. To complement the three new styles and to refresh the complete Bella by BA range, BA has also launched nine new colours that are available for all 24 door designs in the range. Also new are woodgrains Tiepolo Light Walnut, Odessa Oak and Steinberg Beech. Following requests from dealers Avola Cream and Avola Flint Grey have also been added. BA is confident that the introduction of these new colours and styles further enhances the Bella by BA door range, making it one of the best available. Avienda was the most popular of the new doors launched at the HPX show. It is a vinyl wrapped door and is shown here in Mali Wenge.

Hill’s Panel Products (HPP) rounded off the celebrations for its 20th year with the very successful HPX exhibition. One of the star turns at the show was the launch of the updated door range – the biggest ever offered by the company.

doors a highlight at hpp N

ow with over 15 years of experience in manufacturing furniture doors, HPP has certainly moved things on since the mitre framed doors of the early days. The range now includes both vinyl wrapped and duo pvc edged doors. Every design in the range is backed by a comprehensive selection of accessories including full sheet and cut and edged mfc, Eurolight, cornice, pelmet and edging tapes - making it easy to source everything needed to complete the design.

The vinyl wrapped collection

Like the wine of the same name, Chardonnay has universal appeal.

HPP’s vinyl wrapped collection is manufactured on site to bespoke sizes with a quick seven day turnaround and is available nationwide. The new product launch sees the range extended to over 30 doors, covering everything from traditional designs to modern slab based styles. The decor range now includes over 40 colours that are constantly evolving to keep up with the latest market trends and ever improving vinyl quality that offers incredibly realistic wood effects. Four new door styles have been added to the vinyl range. These are Avienda, Chardonnay, Denver and Sahara. Each of these designs was developed after extensive consultation with existing customers. All the doors were popular at the show – but Avienda was definitely the star. Complete with an integrated handle, it offers a look that works equally well in a dark linear woodgrain or in a soft uni colour, whether used alone or in combination. The colour range has been updated with ten new doors in a mix of woodgrains, uni colours and glosses.

Duo pvc edged doors

The Sahara door has an interesting woodgrain effect.

38 • KITCHEN JOURNAL OCTOBER 2011

Duo pvc edged doors were added to the HPP product range last year. The doors were originally available in ten decors but demand has seen this extended to well over 20, spanning four surface types. As with vinyl doors, every Duo pvc edged door is manufactured on site to bespoke sizes and is available nationwide. Duo high gloss pvc edged doors are available in black, cream and white with 3D 1.2mm pvc edging to give an attractive glass effect finish. Duo Ultra Gloss doors are available in Autumn Plum and Rosales with matching pvc edging. The woodgrain range is manufactured using matching 2mm pvc edging and Egger mfc with the premium structure 22 finish that gives a deep brush effect with both a glossy and a matt linear grain, offering a very realistic wood effect. The biggest change to the Duo range since its launch is the introduction of nine acrylic decors. Driven by strong consumer demand, every acrylic door is available with either a matching or a 3D glass effect edging and is manufactured using Senoplast which offers superior gloss levels and scratch resistance.

Take your kitchen to the next level. Only imagination sets limits to how electric movement can improve tomorrow's kitchen. The philosophy of tomorrow's kitchen is about making it fit the user’s needs for functionality and movement. While high end kitchens of today are already multifunctional and designed in a pure and minimalist style, Linak is ready to take your kitchen to the next level. Linak offers well proved products for kitchen environments that enable designers to invent yet unforseen functionalities. The perfection in motion solutions from Linak have the ability to improve people's lives.

Tables and islands in the kitchen suit many different purposes when the height is adjustable. Raise the table to a comfortable level when preparing a meal. When the meal has been served, lower the table to its preferred position. The activity table is also ideal for family participation. Tall, small or medium sized? People need different working heights - and being able to raise or lower a surface means you will always be working in the best position. Linak can also help when hands free opening or lowering of cupboards is needed. As cupboard doors are getting larger and heavier, an actuator solution provides easy access.

Raise parts of an island to let it reveal new functions perhaps to provide easy access to tableware or to allow a tv set or computer monitor to slide away when not needed. Use two lifting columns and see how the block rises elegantly with minimal noise.

THE SCIENCE OF MOVEMENT

The DL2 lifting column is an ideal standalone system. It is available in three standard stroke lengths: 300mm, 350mm and 500mm. The lifting capacity is up to 3500N per column. Up to four columns can be run from one control box. Heights can be pre-set and are near silent in operation.

The DL4 lifting column has a low installation height of 560mm with a stroke of 675mm. It can be run as a single column or as a multiple system parallel drive. The lifting capacity is 700N per column. The system can be configured to set heights. Also available are memory functions and RF remote control.

the real thing... A traditional range cooker can burn wood, solid fuel, oil, gas, or electricity and some models will provide central heating as well as cooking facilities. If your customer wants a traditional range, make sure they know the difference between a cook only heat storage model and the more adaptable type that will provide heating and hot water.

Discreetly housed behind the top left door, the control panel can be accessed directly or programmed via a remote handset. Using the control panel, the hotplates and ovens can be turned on manually when needed and it is possible to heat only one hotplate or both, only the roasting oven, the baking oven or the simmering oven - or all three. Using the remote control handset, the ovens can be programmed to come on automatically for one or two cooking cycles per day, seven days a week and it is also possible to set the AGA Total Control cooker to provide constant ambient warmth to the kitchen. 0845 712 5207 www.aga-web.co.uk

n the 1920’s a Swede, Dr Gustave Dalen, invented what we know now as the Aga cooker - a closed cast iron range with ovens that stored heat rather than sending most of it up the chimney. The traditional Aga and other stored heat cookers such as those from Dunsley and Redfyre still work on Dr Dalen’s basic principle. The heat source is always on, heating a massive griddle and the heavy well insulated ovens. The temperature rises slowly but stays fairly constant. There is a large temperature gradient between the upper and lower ovens with one perfect for faster cooking and one for slow. There’s no grill as such. Because the heat up time is about six hours, the cooker has to be on 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. Domestic hot water can be heated off a small boiler, which is available as an add on but the burner has to be increased in power to do this - and the experts say it is not the most efficient or cost effective way to provide hot water. ● The only concession to modernisation from the original design concept is the change of fuel from coal to oil, gas, wood, or electricity. A chimney or flue is needed for most gas, oil and solid fuel cast iron ranges. The AGA and Everhot Electric, and the Redfyre and Esse gas flueless, do not need a chimney but there is also a power flue and balanced flue gas AGA - worth considering if the kitchen does not have a chimney. ● The oven temperature is steady and constant, as is the temperature of the hot plates - but care has to be taken when doing large amounts of cooking. If a lot of heat is taken from the oven or hot plates, it takes quite a long time to build back up again. The heat up time is at least six to eight hours from cold. In the summer the kitchen can be hot if the cooker is left on all year for cooking. For this reason most people who have a stored heat cooker usually have a second electric or gas model for summer use. ● The alternative to the stored heat range cooker is a single or twin burner cast iron range that can also be used to run central heating. The rapid heat up time means there is no real need for another cooker, nor does the kitchen become unbearably hot in summer, as the cooker is only on when needed. To make a range cooker even more in tune with today’s cooks, and to get higher boiler outputs for larger houses in a smaller unit, all the manufacturers now make a range of twin burner cookers. One burner runs the boiler and the other the oven. You get timed warmth for the kitchen, instant cooking, a cooler room in the summer and efficient burners. It is possible to have hot water/central heating without the cooker heating up. ● Traditional cast iron range cookers can be fuelled by solid fuel, wood, electricity, natural or LPG gas or oil. Oil used to be the favoured choice for country houses but ever rising prices and the huge risk of theft from the garden tank have made it less popular. A number of wood burning range cookers have come on to the market - but there are several things for would be customers to consider. One is a source of economically priced wood - last winter the cost of logs rose to an all time high. Users also need to store wood properly and plan ahead. The secret of efficient wood burning is dry wood. This means storing at least 10 cu/metres of wood, half of which must be near the point of use and dry. The calorific value of wood is low so the owner has to keep feeding it into the range to get the output, which is not easy for anyone who leaves early for work and arrives home late. Lugging and storing wood is hard work - no wonder they say it warms you three times - when you cut it down, when you cut it up and when you burn it! KITCHEN JOURNAL OCTOBER 2011 • 49
