BRIGHTER AND WHITER Alno have been making kitchens for 75 years - and were among the first German companies to target the UK market. Design combined with functionality is a core value for the brand. There’s the 13cm block system that adjusts to any body size, intelligent storage space ideas, Servosoft drawers and pull out technology and a huge choice of unit styles sizes and door fronts. The latest from Alno is Ultra White - a white with almost no yellow, creating a cool, clean finish that suits the stark lines of modern kitchen design. chic Believing in better… “Germany has an enviable history in design and behind many of its most iconic products is the Bauhaus principle that the best should be available to all,” says Wayne Dance, MD of InHouse UK who represent Schüller in this country. “Schüller abides by this principle and has been effortlessly creating kitchens that merge aesthetics with ergonomics and function for over 60 years. They constantly amaze us at InHouse with the staggeringly high level of design and quality that they offer.” Shown here is Bari Nova Anthracite. 01661 842304 www.inhouseuk.net

xperienced retailers Steve and Kerry Liddington had already tasted success in the bathroom business with The Bathroom Studio, opened in 1997. The studio included a small area for kitchens - which has now been expanded into Future Kitchens, a purpose built showroom at the Walker Business Park. Around half of the new showroom is taken up by displays from Nolte who see Future Kitchens as a flagship for the brand. Bob Marsden, UK Country Manager for Nolte Kitchens, is responsible for direct retail: “As a manufacturer the opportunity to show such a good cross section of the range in one place was too good to miss. The attention to detail shown in the choice of materials - flooring, lighting, props etc really does enhance the displays, making Future Kitchens a true flagship for Nolte. We are very proud to have Future as a UK direct business partner and look forward to helping them to make this venture the huge success that it deserves to be.” Steve Liddington, MD at Future Kitchens, says the aim was to create the perfect showroom offering the best in quality, design and service to customers: “The new studio is only a short walk from The Bathroom Studio so customers who know us don’t have far to go. We have handpicked major brands who we feel are leading the way in the kitchen industry.” Nolte, Villeroy & Boch, Neff and Siemens are all in the showroom, which has already been named a Centre of Excellence. There is a working display for cooking demonstrations so customers can see top appliances in action. To contact Future Kitchens phone 01872 240909 or visit future-kitchens.net coming soon online. hen deciding upon a slogan for 2013, Schüller looked at how they create kitchens that combine exciting design with functionality and realised the starting point was always inspiration. Right at the start of the design process for the 2013 Collection, Schüller took a close look at the feedback from the market itself and from Schüller retailers around the world. The company quickly concluded that positive reaction was a motivating factor in new developments - and this feedback combined with their passion to design kitchen ranges that combine affordability with aspirational good looks is how they came up with their new Inspiration, Motivation and Passion slogan. The new collection sees a host of refinements and launches that were showcased at the recent Kitchen Mile A30. Since Schüller is renowned for attention to detail, there is a special focus on the drawer/pull-out system C-Tandem plus, newly developed in partnership with Blum. The result gives more value and storage space in the pull-out and an improved design.
inspire
Introducing C-Tandem plus • The new 35cm deep pull-outs are available in widths of 45, 50 and 60cm. The C-Tandem plus is available for all four carcase depths of 35, 46, 56, and 66cm. • The new C-Tandem plus offers optimal stability up to 120cm wide drawers and pull-outs. • The new Glass-Boxside features a high quality silver-coating and a new rectangular rail that secures the front with greater stability. • The back panel is raised, giving a larger storage space. • The new toughened clear Glass-Boxside is designed end to end with no interruption of mounting fixtures. • The increased height of the Glass-Boxside (16mm) and secure collection of the back panel, sides and guide rails gives high levels of stability, especially important for the free-standing waste collector.
Brightening up white Pure Crystal white colour adds to the purist palette and presents a third white to the schüller.C collection. With Brilliant white already available for contemporary designs and Magnolia for those seeking a white with added warmth, this new shade is a great addition. Crystal white is available for a variety of fronts from melamine, high glosses and the new glass fronts.
New door finishes Glass is a must for contemporary and modern kitchens. Door fronts come in Crystal white and Magnolia, and are available in high gloss or satin finish. Manufactured to exacting standards, the colour is applied to the back of 3mm toughened glass which is then fixed to a 1.6cm thick wood panel for stability. These fronts benefit from ABS edging to further protect the glass.
Colour Colour plays a strong role in 2013, with exciting new additions for structured lacquer. May Green, Petrol and Lobster complement the full 26colour range that includes natural tones and fresh accent colours. With Schüller wood tones, in either veneer or laminate, there are more than 90 colours and decorative designs available.
Trade communication Maintaining and developing relationships with trade is really important for Schüller and that starts with the best levels of communication. New marketing documents are produced every year including the latest photos, brochures and a magazine. This year sees a brochure titled ‘Why you sell Schüller kitchens - reasons that support your sale’. In 10 concise points, Schüller explains the clear benefits of the 130-grid system, the special technological advancements and the company itself.

One of the benefits of steel is that elements can be easily joined together - as shown here in the Gaggenau Vario Cooktop 400 series. Cooktops with widths of 38 to 90cm can be combined and flush fitted to create a surface mounted look. There’s a choice of elements including induction and gas cooktops in 38, 60, 80 or 90cm widths and specialised items such as a steamer, a Teppan Yaki, an electric griddle or a deep fryer plus matching ventilation. 01908 328200 www.gaggenau.co.uk
Robust, rust proof and hygienic, stainless steel is the perfect material for making kitchen equipment - and remains the most popular finish for appliances and sinks even after several years in the top spot.
Priced at an amazingly low £87, the Slender 900 extractor from Carron has three speed settings, metal grease filter and a 28W halogen downlight. There is also a 600mm version available from Carron. 01324 638321 www.carron.com
metal works Blanco are experts in stainless steel. Their impressive extractor collection includes four new models in the BlancoAir collection. There are three wall hoods and one island model. All have touch controls, run on timer and filter clean indicators. Shown here is the 900mm wall model 01923 635200 www.blanco.co.uk
This low profile gas hob, PX140, from Smeg adds a sleek, sophisticated touch. It has removable cast iron pan stands and illuminated controls. 0844 557 0070 www.smeguk.com
WHAT’S SO GOOD ABOUT STEEL? • It is recyclable – in fact many new steel appliances are made using a high proportion of recycled steel. • It is non porous, stain resistant, extremely hygienic, heat resistant (a hot pan put down on a steel surface won’t cause a disaster) and cannot be damaged by bleach or household cleaners. The only thing that will cause a problem is drain unblocker - which can turn the surface of the sink black. This will polish away eventually but the sink won’t ever look quite the same. • It can be made into a variety of shapes. • The neutral colour means that stainless steel appliances will integrate well into just about any kitchen. • A kitchen with stainless steel appliances is viewed as a plus by home buyers.

The ARONA range from CasaVida by Nolte Delbrück.
Don’t ignore bedroom furniture, says Wayne Dance, MD of InHouse it can be a profitable addition to your studio. Here he outlines the benefits of the CasaVida range from Nolte Delbrück.
bedroom bliss
How is the Nolte Delbrück product portfolio split up? It is divided into 3 segments. • Purely Freestanding furniture such as the Venezia range which fits in to an allocated space and doesn’t need the accessorised infill panels. • Semi fitted ranges such as Starlight which can virtually fill walls with wardrobes comprising of hinged or sliding doors. There are incremental size increases of 500mm ending with an attractive framing process that gives an extra touch to the finish. • The Bespoke My Way range which offers a fully fitted option, not only in widths but in made to measure angles which perfectly fit sloping walls on a side to side basis. The same option on a front to back option allows wardrobes in roof space bedrooms to perfectly fit. All three segments offer matching bed and headboards which harmonises the room. Are direct sellers still taking the bulk of the business? The market is still dominated by direct sellers who advertise heavily on TV and in the press, but there are opportunities to be had, if the retailer finds the correct supplier to partner with. The global recession has forced a lot of businesses to look at other ways of increasing their profit margins. I believe that the vast range of Nolte Delbrück coupled with its USPs and the devotion to bespoke has given us the edge in this market. Additionally, it is literally a virgin territory in the UK for Nolte Delbrück, offering a unique opportunity to climb aboard at the beginning and have unparalleled exclusivity. What makes your product different - how does it appeal to customers? There are a number of key points here: • Design. Nolte Delbrück offers a wide variety of ranges to cater for every taste from the ultra contemporary to the country style. • Quality. Nolte Delbrück brings the best of German engineering to their ranges. The quality of construction is superb and assembly is fast and easy. All the drawer chests are provided rigid and fully assembled - a lot of our competitors deliver all flatpack. • Price. We’ve got a rigid product for a price that in a lot of instances undercuts flatpack bedroom furniture in the UK. • Range. If someone wants a high gloss white bedroom, they can have it in a laminate, a foil or a lacquer. By doing this, we can offer customers with different budgets a similar finished look. In addition, we can also design bespoke furniture to suit all sloping

walls and ceilings. Our offer is unprecedented in terms of quality, flexibility, and range - all at a price which is refreshingly competitive. What do you offer retailers? • Simplicity. Keep it simple. At Nolte Delbrück there’s a simple trade price list and clear pricing structure. Items are also put into sets, which is cost effective for the consumer and easy for the retailer to sell. • Display, display, display. Retailers need to make displays look like a bedroom set. Create the ambience. Have the whole furniture range from bed through to cabinets, bedside tables, wardrobes in large runs with full fitting. • Marketing support. Retailers need to get aggressive and get out there - go and find new customers with lucrative lures to get them to take a look. Market it relentlessly and as a stand-alone profitable addition to the business. • Point of sale. If retailers can’t display multiple room sets, make sure the available range is clear and shown in an enticing manner. CasaVida’s point of sale is beautiful and it invests heavily in literature and photography to demonstrate to consumers the potential of the range. What do you expect in return in display commitment etc? Nolte Delbrück offers very appetising display terms. There are discounts where retailers can buy one bedroom set including a double bed, 2.5m wardrobes, 2 cabinets, and lit headboard for as little as £600, excluding mattress. Sylmar Technology has introduced six additional decors for the maia solid worksurface collection. The surface is now available in 28mm depth as well as 42 and 54mm. The new colours are Ammonite, Calcite, Fossil, Meteorite, Pearlstone and Sandstone. Commercial Director Julian Annison says, “it is a big commitment to increase the number of decors available in the range by half but the market is a rapidly evolving one and maia is determined to maintain its position at the forefront of trends. As part of this strategy, our collaboration with MLDP saw them and us casting a critical eye on trends at Eurocucina - we introduced Ammonite because of the number of grey tones we saw at the show. We have also introduced a 28mm thickness to address the growing popularity of thin worktops.” Maia is easy to install and does not need a specialist fabricator. 01773 521300 www.sylmarsolidsurfaces.co.uk

A different approach Jetstone is well known as a specialist in granite, quartz, composite and glass worktops but has recently moved into a new area with ceramics. Launched at KBB2012, the new ceramic tops are stain, scratch and heat proof and can be made up to 3500mm in length without the need for joins. The material is also suitable for wall cladding bathrooms, for windowsills, on top of furniture and many other applications. A core range of 24 colours is held in stock but over 40 additional shades are available to order on request. The company has production facilities in Holland where tops are made to measure. The UK office offers full sales support plus nationwide templating and fitting by its team of specialists. Jetstone is currently investing £5 million in a new factory that will have state of the art facilities. The company has also appointed nine sales agents in the UK. 01442 249733 www.jetstone.co.uk
Easy does it with Bushboard New M-Stone quartz worktops from Bushboard are supplied as blanks for easy installation on site. M-Stone is made using a top secret mix of acrylic and quartz that gives the material the advantage of fast and easy onsite installation. It will retail at around £270 inc VAT per linear metre - and the company estimates that it can be supplied and installed at between 30 and 40 percent below the cost of other major brands in the quartz sector. “M-Stone will do for quartz worksurfaces what our Encore range did for solid surface - revolutionise the market with a competitive product that is supplied and fitted in site, reducing lead times, costs and maximising opportunities for retailers and installers,” says Bushboard MD Stuart White. The material is available in a solid 25mm thickness for worktops and breakfast bars and in 12mm for upstands and hob panels. Worktops are available in 3050 by 650mm and 2100 by 900mm sizes, upstands 2050 by 100mm and the hob panel is 1200 by 1310mm. Colours available are black, brown, white and cream. Black has delicate metallic particles that give a granite effect. The company has developed two specialist tooling kits for installers. The Standard Kit is for straight runs, joins, L-shapes and inset sinks. The Router Kit is for shaping corners and making drainer grooves. Bushboard runs free training days every week at its HQ. M-Stone is offered on a combined display stand with Encore solid surfacing, complete with large sample blocks and literature. Retailers already displaying Encore will receive a merchandised box so they can update their stand with M-Stone. 01933 232272 www.bushboard.co.uk

24-26 DISHWASHERS

THE DISHWASHER MARKET Dishwasher sales in Britain have fallen 11 percent from a 2007 peak, researcher GfK RT (GFK) estimates. “Compared to western Europe, automatic dishwashing is considered less of a necessity and more of a luxury by many UK consumers,” says Euromonitor analyst Lee Peart in a recent interview in Bloomberg Business Week. “It’s a cultural thing. Driving sales of the appliance rather than the cleaning products that go in it is essential.” Four in 10 adults own a dishwasher in the UK, says researcher Mintel. That compares with 77 percent in Germany, 52 percent in France, and 49 percent in Spain. In Europe, only Greece and Turkey have lower ownership rates than Britain. About 78 percent of US homeowners have a dishwasher, according to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers. It seems that old habits die hard in the UK. If you’ve never had one, why would you want one? Conversely, as Ian Moverley of Hotpoint comments, once someone has used a dishwasher they will never go back to washing up in the sink. To improve sales and hopefully change the way the British public thinks about dishwashers, Reckitt Benckiser Chief Executive Officer Rakesh Kapoor announced last year that his company would shift more of its marketing budget toward consumer education and away from television ads. This resulted in the ‘stop washing up’ campaign, which ran through social media and viral video and featured user diaries from first time dishwasher owners. The idea behind this was that converting more Britons to dishwashers would help Reckitt Benckiser’s Finish, a dishwashing detergent that has a dominant 40 percent share of the western European market in 2011, according to Euromonitor. The campaign made the point that automatic dishwashers use less water and energy and save time when compared to washing dishes by hand. According to a 2010 study of 150 Britons published in the International Journal of Consumer Studies half those surveyed initially incorrectly thought manual dishwashing needed less water. About four in ten Britons consider dishwashers expensive to run, and a near-equal amount see them as an unnecessary luxury, Mintel found. Changing this thinking is a task appliance and detergent manufacturers need to tackle if the market is to grow. Tight kitchen space acts as another deterrent. Manufacturers have responded with models that are 25 percent slimmer and with 60cm models designed to take more than the traditional 12 place settings. Such machines have won over some doubters, and UK penetration is now double the 20 percent level of 1999. New-home construction, which peaked at an 18-year high in 2007, also spurred adoption. But the housing slowdown that began the following year has “severely impacted” dishwasher sales since. 24 • KITCHEN JOURNAL DECEMBER 2012

WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO? Energy ratings labels on appliances are generally given to products based on size categories. The idea is to allow consumers to compare between two similarly sized products. This means two differently sized appliances with the same energy rating may use quite different amounts of electricity. For instance, an A rated 180-litre fridge freezer could cost only £36 a year to run whereas a larger 525-litre fridge freezer with a better A+ rating would cost £49 a year to run. That’s £13 a year more - but the consumer may feel it is worth paying for the extra food storage space. Standby costs On average UK households spend £35 a year each powering appliances left in standby mode. This is the energy used by certain appliances when they are not in use and not switched off at the plug. Recent regulations specify that all electronic products sold within the EU after 2010 cannot have a standby power greater than 1W. However, whilst the average standby consumption of new products is going down, households are being filled with more and more electronic gadgets, so we are all still using a lot of standby energy. Some appliance manufacturers are making efforts to address the standby issue. Smeg, for example, offers a choice of different levels of standby access – the Linea SCP112 has three standby stages – clock/no clock, visible/lights, clock and ready for action.
The A++ rated KFN 12923 SD-2 fridge freezer from Miele features the Dynamic Cooling System which keeps the temperature constant and even throughout the entire fridge section helping food to stay fresher, longer. 0845 365 6614 www.miele.co.uk
Smeg’s SCP112-8 oven offers different levels of standby to reduce energy use. 0844 557 0070 www.smeg.com
Kitchen appliances Switching an old cooker to an A rated model can save around over £43 over the lifetime of the appliance. Fridges, freezers and fridge freezers are switched on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so for consumers it is well worth finding models that are energy efficient. Recommended refrigeration appliances must all have an A+ or A++ energy rating. However, because the energy rating is based upon classification by size, a smaller A rated fridge could use less energy than a larger A+ rated fridge. The total energy consumption of appliances can be compared by looking for their yearly energy consumption in kWh/annum displayed on the bottom right of the energy label. Kettles are one of the most commonly used appliances in the kitchen. On average a UK household boils the kettle 1,500 times a year - so although hot taps are quite expensive to buy, they do deliver energy savings.
Quooker, well known for its boiling water taps, has launched Twintaps so that a hot tap can be teamed with a matching mixer. A LED ring lights up when the push and turn handle is touched, alerting the user that it is a boiling water tap. The turning mechanism is also deeply grooved as an additional indicator that this is a hot tap. Twintaps are available in two designs. 020 7923 3355 www.quooker.co.uk
The ecobubble™ range of washing machines from Samsung uses 70 percent less energy when washing at 15ºC than a standard machine washing at 40ºC with no loss in cleaning performance. A bubble generator dissolves detergent into the water in the drum by injecting air. This helps the detergent to penetrate fabrics and remove stains with less hot water needed for the cleaning process. 01932 455000 www.samsung.com/uk
Tumble driers are by their nature energy guzzlers. Gas tumble driers are one of the cheapest and most environmentally friendly type of drier to run, but this type of drier can be slightly more expensive to install because of the need for a gas connection. Electric heat pump tumble driers are also very efficient as they recycle the heat from the ventilation tube back into the drier, but take away the water vapour from the air. Consumers who have to use a tumble drier because they have no outside space for clothes drying should be advised to buy a washing machine with a high spin speed to extract the maximum amount of water from the load.

The offer which is open until December 31st includes the Debut Granite sink for £119 (left, in Champagne), the Sienna ceramic, Zeta steel undermounts, and the Precision Plus 150 steel inset together with the Pura monobloc, all for an amazing £59. Record month for Schüller InHouse broke the £1 million barrier for Schüller sales this September. The month was 40 percent up on last year. “We had a great start to the year with the KBB exhibition,” says MD Wayne Dance. “Schüller has been fantastic at totally reinventing its range with stunning new products at very competitive price points. While the economy is still struggling we are seeing retailers move to Schüller because they want the support, product and price point that will appeal to the market.” Schüller has just previewed its 2013 collection at the House Fair in Germany (see pages 8-9 for more information). The new GlasLine range brings designer kitchens into an affordable price bracket. “While the economy has stagnated, people’s aspirations have not,” says Wayne. “Retailers need to be sure that what they are offering is still appealing to customers. Without quality displays that showcase new technology, colours and finishes, retailers can quickly fall behind and fail to attract customers to their showrooms.”
