Hoover’s new Aquavision tumble dryer with heat pump technology features a reservoir in the door so the user can quickly see when collected condensed water needs to be emptied. The heat pump technology works by using a closed air circuit that cools the hot air as it leaves the drum, condensing it back into water. This water is pumped out and the residual heat from it directed back into the dryer, saving energy. The dryer has an impressive A minus 40 percent energy rating and will take a 9kg load. 0151 334 2781 www.hoover.co.uk

Paint effect foils have been a major factor in revolutionising the hand painted look. More robust and much faster to produce than hand painted solid timber doors, paint effect foiled doors are also more economically priced. Cambourne from Ellis features a five piece Shaker door with a paint effect foil in a choice of colours. Sales and Marketing Director Peter Elson says that painted timber effects and Shaker styling both remain very popular: “Achieving this look can stretch the budget, so we set out to offer the same highly desirable style at a more affordable price point. The result is the stunning Cambourne range. The effect is so convincing that it is very difficult to distinguish from solid painted timber.” Colours include Sage, Chalk, Cream and Almond. 01484 514212 www.elliskitchens.co.uk

N
ow in its 41st year, the multi-million pound Symphony Group continues to increase its market share while many of its competitors fight to maintain ground in the fitted kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and, more recently, hospitality markets. It’s done this partly by focussing intently on the needs of its core customer groups and providing a range which covers everything they could possibly require; partly by providing all-encompassing levels of service which include delivery and full installation; and partly by establishing longterm partnerships with suppliers and embracing automotive industry manufacturing methodology. In the last five years, Symphony’s kitchen designers have focussed on the development of ranges for five distinct market sectors: Kubix - the “kitchen for life” - provides for the social housing market; Koncept is Symphony’s private housing brand; for merchants and mid-level high street retailers, Milano contains plenty of options; Gallery is ideal for the upper retail sector; and at the top of the retail range, Signature is Symphony’s new premium brand. Across the range, gloss remains king and painted fascias (finished in the company’s Rotherham plant) are overtaking woodgrains. Symphony’s bedroom offer includes Embrace, for the independent retailer; Aspect for care homes, student accommodation and hotels; and Revive, a hotel specific offer. Aquadi is the new bathroom furniture offer for independent retailers. Across the whole portfolio there are 120 kitchen fascia options, 26 more for the bathroom and a further 18 for the bedroom. For most companies, supplying and fitting kitchens to equip one third of all new homes built in the UK every year would be headache enough. Yet Symphony’s factory, atop the former Grimethorpe colliery, is an
oasis of calm. A small army of workers shuttles meticulously labelled components from house-high racks to lines of red-shirted assemblers. The eagle eyes of the blue-shirts - the quality control inspectors - miss nothing. At the end of each assembly line, expert packers wrap cabinets and fill a fleet of waiting trucks. Squeezed between the component racks at the other end of the line, a small Weeke sits idle. It’s one of very few machines in the factory. So what’s the secret? Marketing Director Simon Collyns takes up the story: “When Martyn Davis became Symphony’s MD in 2000, he brought with him many of the processes used in the automotive industry. We made a conscious decision to move away from manufacturing and into assembly and logistics. We started to look more closely at our suppliers suppliers like Decorative Panels, who had been trading with Symphony for 30-40 years. They’d already proved themselves as a trusted supplier, so we asked them to prepare a three-point incremental growth plan to demonstrate, among other things, they could provide the capacity we needed for growth.” “We looked at Symphony’s forecasts and married our investment to them,” continues Decorative Panels Group MD, Guy Metcalfe. “Our businesses have grown together. We supply 100% of all Symphony’s carcases and many of their fascias. We share forecasts and manufacturing capacity information.” Adds Simon, “Our business depends on having this kind of partnership. We have a small number of partners and we build those relationships carefully. Decorative Panels is a cornerstone; an absolutely key, critical part of our business and our success.” But all too frequently one hears of big companies pulling the plug on smaller
suppliers with catastrophic consequences. Surely, it is a huge risk for Decorative Panels. Guy Metcalfe freely admits he is not even slightly nervous. “I’ve never dealt with a business that is as loyal as Symphony,” he says. “We had to learn how to supply their acccount and we were not without fault on occasion but Symphony’s attitude was always to work together to make things better. When Martyn Davis says he will do something, he will do it. Taking almost a million components a month, Symphony is our biggest account but we have no fear because we have an immense amount of faith in this partnership.” It’s clear that, like the duets it sings with a small, elite band of suppliers well-established brands like Hettich, Kesseböhmer and others - the polyphony between Decorative Panels and Symphony is in perfect harmony.

TKC’s new Vivo White high gloss range features 19mm slab doors and is available at a competitive price point. The use of pan drawers and curved doors adds a feeling of exclusivity.
In the current economic climate customers are looking for a good deal all round. TKC firmly believes that a new kitchen doesn’t have to blow the budget – and has the products to do the job in style.
top value from tkc “For customers who want a contemporary look, a good rule to remember is that less is more. Keeping the kitchen basic and linear overall and complementing it through a few on-trend curved doors and pan drawers will help to achieve a minimalist look whilst saving on cost. If a more traditional look is desired, a simple Shaker-style kitchen can be cost-effectively dressed up through accessories such as tongue and grooved panels, tangent cornices and pelmets, all of which will help to provide a more classical feel. “Worksurfaces, flooring and wall tiles can all take a big chunk out of an overall kitchen budget but clever thinking can help to keep these costs down. For example, the high-end look of expensive granite or marble worksurfaces can be achieved through substitution with low-cost laminate, which is available in a wide variety of colours, textures and patterns and is also easy to clean and maintain. Similarly, whilst handmade wall tiles can look beautiful, they are undoubtedly costly so should be used sparingly as borders and accents or as a splashback. Bold coloured paints can instead add a splash of colour and can help to transform a kitchen easily and inexpensively. When it comes to flooring, there are some fantastic vinyl flooring options available at decent price points as well as some great wood-look laminates that provide a realistic appearance. “Finally, handles are really important and can totally change the look of a kitchen, helping to add personality and style without blowing the budget.”
Achieving a smart kitchen on a budget is more than possible, says Jitendra Mistry.

One of the benefits of vinyl wrapped Shaker Portland is its versatility as it can be contemporary or can be accessorised with T&G panels, pilasters and a tangent cornice for a more traditional look.

implicity is the essence of Shaker design – a principle firmly taken on board by Mereway Kitchens with the introduction of Winchester. A tidy, no fuss door style, Winchester is the latest addition to the Complete Kitchen Collection. It is a five piece foil wrapped MDF door that combines style and character with good value for money as it sits in a lower price group. Presenting an inexpensive alternative to the Lincoln Shaker range, Winchester is available in Ivory and Oak finishes, both chosen to reflect current market trends. Winchester also brings curved doors to a lower price group, featuring an external curved cabinet and plinth. Colour co-ordinated Ivory or Oak finish cabinets are available to contrast or complement. The range lends itself to both traditional and contemporary layouts as there is the opportunity to plan with curves or to include traditional features such as posts, a cornice and a light baffle. The collection is one of several due to be launched this month with brochures available shortly. The innovative, award winning Live Life the Mereway marketing concept has seen the company go from strength to strength. Sales & Marketing Director Graham Jones says that Winchester embraces the new living environment approach to kitchen design. “It offers a fresh, new Shaker style door within a lower price group that will appeal to those who are seeking the Lincoln look for less. ppliances have come a long way in the past 25 years. Back in the day, we all marvelled at the very first multifunction ovens. Now ten functions or more is almost the norm. Thanks to tablet computers, the iPhone and more, people are familiar with touch technology so we have to wonder if we will see more icon driven interfaces. Ideas like Ariston’s Leonardo interactive pad, and a host of other “kitchen of the future” schemes we all saw at exhibitions, never made it – but there are now many ovens with preprogrammed recipe settings which is not a hundred miles from what Leonardo was trying to achieve, so technology does seem to adapt itself to what we want and will buy. It all presents a dilemma for retailers. Do you risk putting the customer off by presenting too many bells and whistles or conversely, turn them away with something that is too simple. Complications are hard to sell to older people maybe but then we are told that young ones don’t cook so why do they want it? According to recent research carried out by Beko, consumers don’t want technology for the sake of it but do like features and functions that genuinely make life easier. One of their cleverer ideas is the Nano Oleophobic coating on the inner glass door of ovens that prevents the build up of dirt and grease. Thanks to this special coating, the door only needs to be cleaned with a cloth and warm, soapy water after every 20 cooking cycles. As pyrolysis does not, in general, make much of a job of the inside of the glass door, a combination of the two would be a winner with buyer appeal.

en gizmos Steam is an idea that has had a resurgence recently. There’s nothing new about it - it just works better now and is less complicated. Over 20 years ago, Imperial (now part of Miele) was promoting built in steam ovens in the UK - and Buderus, well known in Germany but new to us here, also made an appearance. Miele has long experience of the steam market - and Product Manager Richard Treffler reckons that customers have become more aware. “To support customers looking to buy a new steam oven, Miele offers Steam Schools which are part of the Creative Living programme of events, demos and courses, The courses guide consumers through the different types of steam oven available, the benefits and how to use them.” Bigger ovens with increased capacity - and better energy ratings - are also a trend. Some can be divided into two sections, which can be used independently. This has obvious appeal for the cook who really prefers a double oven but only has space for a single. The biggest change in hobs has undoubtedly been the fast progress of induction. Developments such as zoneless are carrying this sector forward. Induction is a seeing is believing thing - so it is a good idea to have a working hob in your showroom so that you can demonstrate the amazing speed and controllability.
DOUBLE OVENS Double ovens can now offer specialist baking effects, simplifying the cooking process. The AA rated Premium Line B0909TS double comes with functions that recreate the effect of a wood fired oven to give a crisp base to pizzas and pastry. Residual heat technology gives a gradual rise in temperature so that dough based dishes can set. Booster technology has helped to broaden the appeal of double ovens, cutting down heating times, This oven has a self cleaning function, user friendly IQ touch control operation, a special baking programme and a pizza programme. 0118 933 6900 www.baumatic.co.uk

Alphabetic energy labelling has been with us for some time now - and according to electrical retailers is reasonably well understood by consumers. An A grade has become the starting point - according to the latest Mintel report 74 percent of consumers now say that a minimum rating of A+ is essential - though this does not take price into account. Washing machines are mainly a distress purchase - bought because the old one has finally expired - and are very often price driven. Although consumers will pay lip service to the idea of better energy ratings when asked in a survey, what they will do when it comes to parting with hard cash can be entirely different. We asked several appliance product managers for their views and the consensus was that capacity and spin speed come high on the list. Steve Macdonald, Trade Marketing Director of the Freestanding Division at Hoover Candy UK sounds a cautionary note. “One size fits all does not work retailers can help by finding out how the product will be used in the home, the size of the family, number and age of children, whether they play sport etc. It is worth knowing too that European standards can be very different from the way in which consumers actually use their appliances. In the case of washing machines the test is based on a 6kg wash on a 60ºC cotton cycle when we know in reality that many consumers have larger capacity machines and wash much of their laundry at 40ºC or even 20ºC. At Hoover we believe we have the answer with the All in One 11kg. This machine can wash as many as 55 shirts or 14 large towels in one go and safely mixes whites and coloured together in one wash. The 8 Pulse technology means that laundry can be washed effectively at 20ºC, giving the same performance as a 40ºC wash.” Some machines are now available with a steam function to refresh dry clean only garments - consumers are interested in this but it is hard to say whether or not this feature would push a more expensive purchase. Editor Jan Orchard tried the function on a wool coat and found it disappointing: “The garment came out damp, creased and looking rather worse than when it went in.” What consumers want is a machine that is easy to use and will wash effectively. “Specialist programmes where you simply press a button and have the machine work out the optimum cycle are high on the consumer wish list,” says Darren Peake, Senior Category Manager at Hotpoint Laundry. “Our new BHWMD742 has a My Cycle button that is an easy to use programme which saves consumer’s favourite settings so that they can be quickly recalled at the press of a button.” Most consumers are guilty of either under- or overdosing on laundry detergent. As getting the amount right affects the wash results, you would expect that a fail safe auto dose system would be a winner. The idea has been introduced by a few manufacturers but does not appear to be a buying trigger. “We need to persuaded the consumer of the benefits of auto dose. Saving up to 11 litres of detergent a year, which is worth up to £50, is a real benefit. At the same time the system ensures accurate use of water, no over foaming and no unnecessary rinsing,” says Ros Collins, Laundry Manager at Bosch and Siemens. It is worth noting that auto dose only works with liquid detergent – so if the customer prefers power or liquid tabs there is no advantage.
There is a definite demand for washer dryers in the UK. The ZWT71401WA fully integrated machine from Zanussi will wash a 7kg load and dry up to 4kg. LCD display makes following the progress of the selected programme simple and the machine has a 1400rpm spin speed, which helps to reduce drying time. The energy rating is B, A. 08445 612612 www.zanussi.co.uk

What about washer dryers? There is no doubt that there is demand for washer dryers in the UK market - but consumers do hate not being able to wash and dry a full load in one operation. Washer dryers can also be very wasteful in terms of energy and water use - and time consuming as you can’t wash and dry
The Hoover All In One will take an 11kg load and thanks to 8 Pulse technology will deliver effective cleaning at 20ºC. The top spin speed is 1400rpm and the machine is A+++AA rated. a load at the same time. CDA has just started a major European funded research programme with the aim of developing an energy efficient washer dryer that will wash and dry a full load. In the meantime, Bosch and Siemens have made inroads into energy efficiency with machines that they claim are truly a washing machine and a tumble dryer in one cabinet. The machines use an air condensation drying system so the drying cycle works like a conventional tumble dryer by using an air intake.

amet may be a new name to the UK kitchen world but is deservedly well known at home. It’s an innovative company, still privately owned by its founder Saldiray Kiziltan that designs and manufactures its own drawer slides and hinges. “We are engineers,” says Saldiray. “We make a lot of products, even the tools and machines necessary for hinge and slide production. We design our own product then we design the machines to make it. We are open to develop anything.” Samet’s product range includes single and full extension slides and hinges to cover most domestic and contract applications. The showroom in Istanbul has the collection on display, illustrating premium features such as soft close that glides effortlessly to a smooth, jerk free stop, and slides for handleless applications that spring open with a positive and reassuringly wellengineered click. Samet Smartbox drawer slides (shown on this page) are exceptionally stable when fully extended – and there’s no annoying horizontal oscillation. Samet’s engineers say that by utilising the new synchronisation system and simultaneously increasing the side profile strength of the drawer boxes, the Smartbox system is now easily able to carry either a 40 or 65kg load. The final close is always soft and positive, whether the drawer is pushed gently or slammed. The range of hinges includes Star Track, which has short and long body options for pillar mounting, and Stamm, from an Italian company that Samet bought some time ago. With options that include all standard opening angles, 45 degree hinges, the Star Mini for bathrooms, a 15 degree corner option, glass door hinges and a version for doors up to 40mm thick, Samet has it covered – but is also working on exciting new developments. One of the latest products from Samet is the new generation Neolift lift up door system that features soft opening and closing and ensures that the door is lifted to a consistent angle along its length. The door can be retained in any position between fully open and fully closed. The system is available in white or grey and packed in boxes containing ten sets. The system is available with or without LED lighting built in – a useful extra touch that is typical of Samet’s thoughtful approach to design.

pioneer in panel processing, Gerd Ney is not a man to see an opportunity slip by - especially one that could benefit his customers. When Ney Ltd first started trading, its offer was panel processing machinery, particularly edgebanders, edgebandings, adhesives and other related consumables. It remains the backbone of today’s Ney Ltd, the company Gerd and his fellow directors have grown into a multi-million pound business. Despite a devastating fire last year, the company’s portfolio of machines, hardware, foils and consumables continues to expand - with a mission statement of becoming the complete solution for the smaller manufacturer. New products are introduced on a regular basis – the latest is the development of a collection of kitchen and bedroom doors made to measure in a market friendly collection of designs and finishes. Gerd Ney knows that he has stiff competition in this sector of the market - an area he got into thanks to helping a company that was in difficulty. “We are offering three ranges,” he explains enthusiastically. ”There is a vinyl-wrapped range, an acrylic-edged range and a spraypainted range.” It may sound like a small beginning but there is a lot of choice as the Elegance collection includes 20 designs that span the style spectrum from Shaker to Tongue and Groove - and all are available in a choice of 30 vinyl finishes. The acrylic edged De Novo collection brings duo edged and matching edges to high gloss in ten standard colours on a ten-day turn around. Painted looks are enjoying a revival in the market at the moment, putting the Impressions range with its Slab, Atlas, Vogue and Shaker designs bang on trend. Impressions doors are available in high gloss or matt finishes. Matching accessories can be ordered in all three collections. Ney as a company is always mindful of the needs of the smaller customer so Elegance also caters for the door replacement market with materials for end panels. All three collections are fully available made to measure to UK customers - the perfect opportunity for anyone looking to create a
price sensitive own brand. There is no minimum order quantity - but supply is strictly trade only and will never be direct to the end consumer. Over 18 metres of the material were used for the tops – and as rubber is a vital ingredient in car tyre manufacture, the material cleverly reflects the café owner’s passion for vintage cars. The Oil Can Café is a key attraction in the Cording Shed and sits alongside specialist retailers of vintage clothing, antiques and memorabilia.
