The third MasterPartner® Excellence Awards were presented by Neff at an exclusive evening ceremony held in the imposing Central Hall of The Natural History Museum in London on 8th October 2011. This prestigious event was hosted by well-known TV and Radio Presenter, Vernon Kay, who entertained the audience throughout with his quick wit and amusing banter. As in previous years, the 2011 Neff Excellence Awards were attended by all the nominees for this year’s award categories for a night to remember.

REWARDING EXCELLENCE NEFF REVEALS MASTERPARTNER® EXCELLENCE AWARD WINNERS 2011 After almost 40 years in the UK, the Neff brand has earned an enviable reputation for its outstanding product range. The company is renowned for introducing many innovative ‘Firsts’, including the original CircoTherm® system and the unique SlideAway door oven. Today, Neff is the UK brand leader in built-in kitchen appliances, with over 600 kitchen specialist dealers nationwide and a portfolio of cooking, cooling, dishwashing and laundry appliances that are the envy of the industry. To maintain and develop this portfolio, Neff’s relationship with its dealers is of utmost importance to the brand. That’s why, in 2006, Neff led the way once again by establishing the MasterPartner® initiative to recognise and reward the company’s key Kitchen Specialist Retailers around the UK. EXCLUSIVE STATUS MasterPartner® status is exclusive.

It is only awarded to committed kitchen specialists in recognition of long-term support and dedication to the Neff brand. It’s not about numbers, it’s

about quality: there are only 250 MasterPartner® dealers, but each one boasts extensive knowledge and understanding of the brand, offering potential customers unparalleled expertise in the design and planning of their kitchen. It is this very special partnership between Neff and its key kitchen specialist dealers that is now central to the company’s success in the UK. To recognise this unique relationship between manufacturer and retailer, Neff established the annual MasterPartner® Excellence Awards in 2009. The Awards are demonstrable rewards for the excellent all-round service offered to consumers by MasterPartner® dealers, allowing Neff to show their appreciation in this very public way. THIRD YEAR This is the third year of the Neff MasterPartner® Excellence Awards. Each year the competition increases, as does the desire to win one of these highly coveted industry Awards.

The Judging Panel for this year’s Excellence Awards comprised two national magazine editors, Ysanne Brooks of Beautiful Kitchens and Martin Allen-Smith of Designer, together with Neff Sales Director Mike Jarrett, Neff Brand Manager Hannah Groves and Neff Chief Executive Officer, Michael Steinle. There were nine separate Awards on offer this year, all of which were fiercely contested by the ‘Best of the Best’ – the Neff MasterPartners. FIRST GRANT In another Neff ‘First’, an aspirational new Award was introduced this year: a special £10,000 Bursary Grant for the Neff MasterPartner® with the most creative and innovative Marketing Plan to drive their Neff business forward in 2011/2012.

The three finalists for this prestigious new Award were: Anglia Factors of Ipswich in Suffolk, JD Kitchens of Warrington in Cheshire and Two Guys Kitchens Ltd of Basingstoke in Hampshire. All three produced such impressive Award entries that the Judging Panel decided to award the two runners-up £2,500 each in recognition of their inspired approach to the future of their businesses. DISPLAY CHOICE Also new to the 2011 Neff Excellence Awards was the Best Window Display Award. There were four finalists in this category, namely Ashley Ann of Edinburgh, Dobsons of Cheshunt in Hertfordshire, Kitchen & Bedroom Technique of Wolverhampton and Kitchen Design Centre of Manchester, Colne and Blackburn. BEST OF THE BEST The overall Award winner, the Supreme MasterPartner® – the ‘Best of the Best’ as chosen from all entries received for this year’s Awards – was also announced at the event. The winner of the Supreme MasterPartner® Award is a business that has it all: consistent support and loyalty to the Neff brand, an inspiring Showroom, a great range of appliances on display, a commitment to training, outstanding customer service and

a desire to drive the Neff brand forward in its locality by being better than the competition. This year’s three deserving contenders for the top Award were: James James Kitchens West Kirby in Wirral Kitchen Design Centre Manchester, Colne and Blackburn Two Guys Kitchens Ltd Basingstoke in Hampshire REWARDING EXCELLENCE The winner of each Award category received a certificate and beautifully engraved commemorative Dartington glass vase trophy from the Judges to display in their Showrooms; they

also win a luxury weekend for two at the prestigious Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland. The Supreme MasterPartner® winner is also able to treat his staff to a leisure activity of their choice to the value of £3000, courtesy of Neff. In addition, all the winners are featured in local press advertising and publicity campaigns specifically organised by Neff to highlight their Award wins – as another little thank you from Neff. ARE WE CONFUSING CONSUMERS? Miele is famous for innovation in energy and water saving. The Supertronic T80 WPS washing machine takes an 8kg load and has a detergent dispensing system that automatically dispenses just the right amount to suit the load. The machine has steam cleaning which can reduce the need for ironing and is A+++ rated for energy efficiency. It has a ten year warranty that includes parts and labour. 0845 365 0555 www.miele.co.uk

lean and green The relentless rise in fuel prices has sharpened the mind of consumers in a way that saving the planet has never managed. Pushed in the main by German manufacturers, whose customers really do care about energy saving, the appliance industry has reacted with ever leaner, ever more efficient equipment.

Drying with gas A gas tumble dryer dries at around 40 percent of the cost of an electric model. A typical year’s worth of drying in a White Knight gas dryer costs about £16 compared to £41 in a typical electric model. Gas dryers are fitted in the same way as gas cookers using a bayonet connection. Many White Knight dryers have sensors that switch the machine off when the selected dryness is reached. 01422 203585 www.crosslee.co.uk

Sparing in its use of both water and energy, the Exxcel 7 VarioPerfect washing machine from Bosch has an intelligent water management system called ActiveWater™ that uses sensors to control the precise amount of water needed for each wash cycle depending on the laundry type and load size. The machine is A+++ rated and has a super quick cycle that will wash ten shirts in 15 minutes. 0844 892 8979 www.bosch-home.co.uk

Steve Macdonald, Marketing Director at Hoover Candy wonders if the new style energy ratings are going to puzzle consumers: “Green home expenditure has increased fivefold in the decade from 1999-2008 according to The Co-operative Financial Services with energy efficient home appliances and boilers the most significant categories in the spending increase. Despite this, recent research from the ECA suggests that 85 percent of consumers are motivated by saving money with less than 50 percent concerned about saving the planet. “Manufacturers and retailers are now under pressure from the Government to take responsibility for explaining the environmental benefits of products to consumers – but I wonder if the new energy ratings will really help – or have the energy ratings been around so long that consumers see them but do not really understand them? “With the new European Energy Labels, perhaps we should be asking what does the energy label not tell us? We are expecting consumers to know that the lower the kWh, the less energy the product uses and the more ++++ it has the more efficient it is. We want the consumer to understand that over the lifetime of an inefficient product £100s in running costs could be wasted compared to using a more efficient model, yet we are still not explaining that A++ will be at least 25 percent more efficient than A+ but could be as much as 60 percent. We still don’t equate this to monetary value and show the difference in the consumer’s pocket. We also have to consider how accurate these ratings are, what the benchmark testing is based on and is it relevant to the consumer. Which? found that washing machine labelling testing is based on a 60oC cotton cycle but the average cycle is actually 40 degrees. “We know in this economic climate that the consumer wants two key things - to save time and save money. If we can answer these questions while providing the consumer with greener, more efficient products then we have done our job.” Hoover’s 76 litre Prodige oven is nearly 40 percent larger than a standard built in oven but will fit into the same space. Some models come with a divider to split the oven into two flexi cooking zones with independent controls – an energy saving idea if the whole oven cavity is not needed or if the consumer wants to cook different dishes at different temperatures. The oven has an A-20 percent energy efficiency rating. 0151 334 2781 www.hoover.co.uk

The function can be deactivated if wished. Pause can be used to pause the oven – perhaps if someone is running late for a meal. Controls can be manually dimmed to save power and Exact Temperature shows what the actual temperature is during pre-heat so some dishes can be put in before top temperature is reached – saving time and energy. lean and green THE ENERGY SAVING CUPPA

H

ere in the UK we drink a staggering 165 million cups of tea a day - mainly at home. We also drink 3.9 million cups of coffee a week – but quite a lot of this is in outlets such as Costa and Starbucks. Most of those cups of tea are prepared using water boiled in an electric kettle – and many of us routinely boil more than the average 250ml needed for a cuppa. This combined with the surprising news that a kettle uses the same amount of energy to boil a litre of water as a fridge uses in seven hours makes the appeal and savings potential of instant boiling water taps well worth considering. As well as being used to make drinks, water from instant hot taps is very useful for cooking – and more energy efficient than bringing a pan to the boil on the hob.

The Triflow Quadro System delivers filtered hot water at 98oC, cold filtered water and ordinary hot and cold water from just one tap. The filter cartridge eliminates harmful chemical and bacterial contaminants down to 0.2 micron. 020 7079 0541 www.triflowconcepts.com

Available in chrome or SilkSteel PVD the Minerva 3in1 kettle tap from Franke delivers hot, cold and boiling water. The hot water tank can be fitted behind a standard 150mm plinth saving space. The tap has a built in filter and can be retro fitted as all it needs is a 35mm tap hole. “The tap is a real innovation,” says John Swain, Product Manager at Franke. “It has one spout where many of the others on the market have separate boiling water taps and do not reach 100oC. This tap is also very safe as the safety button has to be discharged before water can be released. “ 0161 436 6280 www.franke.co.uk

This tap offers some of the most sophisticated water and energy saving functions available for both domestic and commercial applications. The All-in-One from Zip has an energy saving Inactivity Sleep Mode that puts the tap into sleep mode if no hot water has been drawn off for two hours. This lowers the water temperature to 65oC and holds it there until the next lot of boiling water is drawn off. Additional energy savings can be used by operating the HydroTap’s 24/7 timer function. The programmable timer allows the entire system to be switched off out of hours while ensuring it is fully operational for the next required period of activity. A domestic user could set the timer for the tap to be off while people are out at work and a commercial user could power down overnight. Throughout the chilling process the HydroTap All-in-One’s unique Power Pulse technology constantly monitors and adjusts the power necessary to achieve the set temperature, ensuring that just the right amount of energy is used. Zip HydroTap is used in commercial and domestic kitchens in more than 50 countries around the world. 01362 852 222 www.zipheaters.co.uk

magic metal

Steel has been the miracle material for industry ever since Bessemer invented the process that made the metal more affordable. It has been an enduring presence in UK kitchens for over ten years – and shows no signs of waning in popularity.

Designed to co-ordinate with other Neff compact stainless steel appliances, the C44L20 steam oven has temperature settings between 40 and 100oC and 20 auto programmes. The water tank is refillable so the oven does not have to be plumbed in. 0844 892 9033 www.neff.co.uk

Little touches can make all the difference, which is why Blanco has come up with a new waste design for the BlancoSupra range of stainless steel undermount bowls. The new BlancoTopper waste cover disguises the basket strainer waste and reduces splashing. Also standard on BlancoSupra models is a streamlined swift flow overflow designed to eliminate problems should a tap be left running or the sink over filled. Fitting on this range has also been made easier as the top rim is flatter and wider to ensure good adhesion to the worktop. Each bowl is supplied with a set of fixings. 0844 912 0100 www.blanco.co.uk

ong Eaton-based Leisure Sinks, part of the Aga Group and the UK’s leading sink manufacturer, has invested £1.5million into upgrading production facilities. A new press to stamp out designs provides increased flexibility and greater capacity at the Meadow Lane factory, while a robot polisher gives the sinks additional finishes and distinctive looks. The investment has allowed Rangemaster to launch a new collection of sinks and taps aimed firmly at the kitchen retail market and offering a wide spread of price points and styles. Improved machinery at Long Eaton has allowed the company to introduce a new surface finish called Micro-Sheen™ that enhances the colour of the steel and creates a soft, brushed effect. Also new is a ground edge trim for all stainless steel inset sinks creating a subtle frame. Each inset sink is supplied with automatically applied sealant and pre-fitted clips to make installation easier. The new sinks and taps are shown on a website that features a clever online tool called Tap It that allows consumers to mix and match sinks and taps. There is also a new sinks and taps brochure and a wall chart that is a useful visual aid for retailers. All Rangemaster sinks and taps are branded and come in new, more robust packaging.

Featuring a softened geometric look the Arlington 1.5 bowl has square wastes and a smooth drainer. It is made from high grade stainless steel and has Rangemaster’s new Micro-Sheen™ finish plus ground edges. Accessories available include a drainer basket and a stainless steel strainer bowl. AK has always been well known for its range of quality fireclay sinks in both traditional and contemporary styles. Now RAK has introduced a “wall to floor” package of kitchen products that will reduce specification, installation and delivery lead times while also offering retailers some unique solutions. The collection includes 26 ceramic sink designs from RAK’s fireclay sink collection. Contemporary designs include the Gourmet inset and undermounted range, which is available in a variety of formats and in white and high gloss black. More traditional designs include authentic Butler and Belfast styles available in a choice of formats for over or undermounting and with either fluted, ribbed or smooth fascias. Much thought has been given to the design of the sinks so that they complement both contemporary and traditional kitchens, space availability and lifestyle. A good example is the space saving Gourmet Sink 16, which has an optional plate and cutlery drainer and can be housed in a 60cm unit. Options within the sink collection include half bowls, single and double bowls, super deep multi use sinks and sinks with integral ledges, integral drainers and weir overflows. A variety of individual over and undermounted sinks plus specialist laboratory designs are also included. Sinks are complemented by chrome mixers from RAK’s Kludi range which incorporate high quality features such as full brass castings, locking nuts and anti rock spouts. Complementary polished porcelain slab tops, upstands, splashbacks and tiles are offered from RAK’s Lounge range, allowing complete co-ordination between the walls, worktops and floor. A sleek monotone look can be achieved by contrasting materials such as an undermounted white sink - e.g. RAK’s Gourmet 17 with a dark toned Lounge porcelain slab top. For walls the popular 10 by 10cm format is available in both the Tip Top and Lotus ranges with colour options that include white, ivory, lemon, grey, black, brown and jade.

ew door designs for the schüller.C collection are the result of intensive research into trends in architecture, the automotive industry and lifestyle. Naturalness and Colour are key themes. The new fronts, Bari, Lima, Castell and the worktops in Silver Larch and Samo Oak show a distinctive wood grain and feature wood tones and striking structures. Saw cut and synchronous pore are key examples and have a raised feel just like real wood. The trend towards colour is particularly evident in textured lacquers which come in a choice of 23 colours ranging from finely graded naturals to ontrend stronger shades. Three new carcase colours, ten new design colours and worktop decors as well as 11 new handles considerably increase the creative options within the 2012 schüller.C collection. Key themes for the collection are consistency, high gloss, variety, structures, individuality and flexibility. Two base unit heights of 715 or 780mm and five different plinth heights allow the kitchen to be tailored to the consumer. Other planning options include a new 660mm deep carcase, 1200mm pan drawers, 520mm wall units and a new 650mm wall unit with bi-fold doors. Introduced into the UK in 1979, DuPont’s Corian comes in over 100 colours. It can be thermoformed so sinks can be seamlessly inset and other colours can be introduced. Corian is supplied by a nationwide network of appointed fabricators. 0800 962116 www.corian.co.uk

SOLID SURFACING EXPLAINED What is it? There are various types on the market but the basic recipe is a mix of ground minerals stirred up with a product such as resin that sticks the whole thing together. Some manufacturers add chips of glass or other material for a more exciting effect. What are the different types? The first solid surface worktop was DuPont's Corian, introduced into the UK in 1979. It is now available in over 100 colours but there is also competition from similar tops such as Staron, Avonite, LG Hi-Macs and Hanex. These are all 12 or 13mm thick materials, which are fabricated onto structural board to give a huge range of worktop shapes. You can have integral sinks (although not necessarily in exactly the same colour as the worktop), drainer grooves, seamless joins upstands and a waterfall edge as well as curves in virtually any dimension. The massive choice of materials and the difference between them is where most people get confused. If you want the definitive no holds barred lowdown with some comment from members of the public who have bought various products, we warmly recommend www.advancekd.co.uk/blog/solidsurface-worktops/comparison where highly experienced retailer Majjie has produced a clear and very useful explanation. Are there any drawbacks? Everything has a downside – the public comment section on the blog, mentioned above, usefully highlights the problems commonly experienced with solid surfacing. Do I need to be an expert ? Some materials can only be installed by an appointed fabricator while others can be dealt with by a trained fitter – and trained is the buzzword here. It is horribly easy to get it wrong so make sure your team knows what it is doing. Most manufacturers offer training courses, so take advantage of these.

solid as a rock It looks like stone, it feels like stone but solid surfacing is much lighter and easier to work with, giving consumers the opportunity to trade up and retailers the chance to make a better margin. Helsinki and Oslo are the latest finishes added to the Hanex solid surfacing collection from IDS. These additions expand the popular Brionne range to 12 within the overall palette of 100 designs. Helsinki and Oslo feature clear acrylic chips within the solid surface and Hanex also offers sinks in 12 styles. “The Hanex brand is aimed at retailers and specialist fabricators providing bespoke work surfaces for the luxury top end of the market where customers are prepared to pay more for a product that makes an individual statement,” commented Andy Sutton, Commercial Director at IDS. Hanex is exclusively available from IDS and core designs are ex stock on 24-48 hour delivery. The new Cosentino Sensa granite worktops do not need to be sealed. The Sensa Granite surface can withstand temperatures up to 300oC and is water resistant.

K

aronia, provider of the Mistral range of genuine 25mm solid surface worktops, has launched a new website at www.karonia.com. Designed to be simple to navigate, the site presents comprehensive and detailed information on the range. Specialising in high quality solid surface solutions for both the residential and commercial sectors, Karonia launched the Mistral range of enhanced acrylic worktops at KBB 2010. Combining the popular look of natural quartz and stone with the practicality and unlimited creative potential of an acrylic based material, Mistral worktops are completely non porous and perfect for kitchen and bathroom use. There is no substrate so there are no internal joints that might compromise the structural integrity of the top. The website explains the important features of Mistral’s 25mm solid format in a features and benefits section and the online gallery explores the creative potential of the material. Because Mistral is 25mm thick features such as drainer grooves, recessed wet areas, decorative curves and edge profiles can all be included. The worktops can be jointed and finished to give a seamless look. Unlike quartz or

granite tops, a Mistral top can be fitted as easily as laminate or solid wood surfaces and can be shaped using a router and jig. Mistral is completely solid, so unlike with veneered solid surface products there is no need to apply an edging strip to hide the core – reducing costs and allowing for more complex shapes. A comprehensive range of detailed training videos and installation manuals can be accessed via the website, which also features information on care and maintenance. Specialist tools and equipment for working with Mistral can be ordered from the online store. Regular training days run in partnership with stockists allow installers to hone their creative talents and offer greater benefits to their customers in terms of both design and practicality. Mistral can be either fabricated in a workshop or on site. The eight page Mistral brochure can be downloaded directly from the website. Mistral 25mm solid surface has a ten year guarantee and is available through a network of appointed distributors. 0845 6580 333 www.karonia.com

custom built Design Centre has been incorporated into the heart of Renolit's recently refurbished Northumbria Building at Renolit Cramlington Ltd. The centre houses a comprehensive display of the company’s products providing an impressive environment for customers to visit and use for business meetings and new product design presentations. The building also includes meeting rooms and conference facilities. The striking exterior façade was created by combining windows made from Renolit Exofol MX in Hazy Grey Finesse with matching Hazy Grey Finesse cladding top and bottom. It is contrasted in the middle with Siena PR, a warm Italian walnut design. Both designs are Renolit Exofol MX Premier Stock Range effects which are produced at the Cramlington site. The Design Centre is divided into four sections, presenting the products of the Design, Exterior and Waterproofing Business Units plus an open display facility for interactive use during presentations. The Design area houses the complete global 3D stock ranges of Renolit Covaren and Renolit Alkoren with an impressive display of almost 170 different effects. Rotating carousels show the UK 3D stock range, 2D Applications, experimental ideas and new product developments. A large conference table made from Renolit Alkoren Lissa A takes centre stage and there is an informal seating arrangement to one side. The room has windows running along its whole length, providing a flood of natural light. On the other side of the room there are display areas for Exterior and Waterproofing. The windows in the Exterior section are backlit to simulate an external view and currently feature the four most recent additions to the Renolit Exofol MX Premier range. These are Teresina XC, Wisconsin XD, Siena PL and Winchester XC. A more extensive selection of window corners is displayed on the central unit. The Waterproofing unit features Alkor Bright, Alkor Solar, Alkor Design, Alkor Plan and Alkor Green – all mainly used in roofing and construction projects. Storage for literature, samples, MFC matching boards and Renolit branded giveaways is provided by under display cupboards surfaced with Renolit Alkoren Platinum White Suedette Matt. 01670 718222 www.renolit.com

NEED TO KNOW

● Dishwashers are water and energy saving. Bosch has got water usage down to just 6.5 litres for a full load in the new AquaStar – try pouring that amount into a sink and see how much you can wash up – nowhere near the 13 place settings the AquaStar can manage. ● Yes, you can find space. A 45cm model does not take up too much room. The alternative is to build a 60cm model into a tall housing below another appliance – so you get two into the space that would normally be occupied by one. Compact models such as the six place setting AAA rated design from Indesit takes up about the same amount of space as a microwave and can be built under or housed on the worktop. The compact table top dishwasher from Indesit takes six place settings. 08000 921 922 www.indesit.co.uk

● Dishwashers are better at washing up than humans. Our hands can’t stand water at the temperature used in a dishwasher – and drying up with a germ laden tea towel is neither as efficient or as hygienic as hot air. ● Shirley Conran once memorably said that life was too short to stuff a mushroom. Doing the washing up falls into the same criteria. A dishwasher can save around ten days of time every year and avoids a lot of arguments about whose turn it is to don the Marigolds!

The fully integrated LF73DWiTU 12 place setting dishwasher from Fagor features AIS advanced intelligence that assesses how dirty the dishes are and suggests the most economical programme for washing them. Duo Zone allows half load washing in either the top or the bottom basket. There are nine programmes, an ECO sensor to reduce water and delay start. 01256 308 067 www.dedietrich.co.uk

easy living The washing up season is upon us as festive cookery and entertaining inevitably mean more dirty pots and pans. It is not hard to convince a customer who has had a dishwasher before to invest in another one – the real trick is in attracting newcomers.

Smeg offers two horizontal single drawer dishwashers that can be built in at a comfortable height. The 12 place setting 90cm wide D1912 has two spray arms with intensive wash. The seven place setting D1607 can be built into a 60cm oven housing. Both models have Rapid Power Wash and are AAA rated. 0844 5731 337 www.smeguk.com

Star Performer

Hailed as the world’s most efficient dishwasher, the Exxcel AquaStar from Bosch is A++ energy rated and available semi and fully integrated at 81.5cm high and 86.5cm high as a built in model for taller cabinets. All of the machines use just 6.5 litres of water to clean a 13 place setting wash – if you did this amount by hand you would use around 40 litres or half a standard bathtub! At the heart of the machine is the innovative ActiveWater system where clean water from the first rinse is stored for re use in the first wash of the next cycle. There are six programmes including sensor washing, intensive and delicate, LED display and VarioFlex Plus baskets with six folding racks in the upper basket and four in the lower basket. Other functions include ExtraDry, Speed Perfect, IntensiveZone and Half Load plus a child lock and a stainless steel interior. All machines are available in white and in silver innox. 0844 892 8979 www.bosch-home.co.uk
