tooling for today Maximise yield, reduce waste and cut noise levels - Leuco’s claims for their new generation tooling.

n this environmentally conscious age, furniture manufacturing has become as much about looking after the environment, maximising yield, cutting waste and safeguarding employees as it has about producing fine designs and making profit. According to tooling specialist Leuco, the tooling you choose can have a significant effect on all of the above. The advent of the lightweight board has resulted in a plethora of new fixings which have been designed to work with honeycomb structures. Honeycomb structures themselves are not new. Doors have been manufactured with honeycomb centres for many years. However, unlike doors (in which the components are usually produced separately by means of frame laying), furniture components are generally cut from larger panels. For the machining of lightweight panels Leuco has developed a range of tools which enables manufacturers to utilise the ‘support edge method’ in which décor edges are glued into the board in an upstream process. Leuco’s simplest entry level version can be used on table shapers

while its high-end adjustment cutter offers fine tuning without dismounting and is designed to provide excellent quality for stationary and throughfeed machines. Another problem which Leuco has solved is that of longevity with nesting cutters. For nesting of components with straight edges, it is common practice to use HWtipped shank-type cutters with a diameter of 8-12mm. However, when machining laminated boards with a finished edge for gluejointing, HW-tipped cutters lose their sharpness all too soon. Leuco’s solutions include a finish-cut cutter with a diameter of 16mm - the Leuco DIA-Profile cutterhead - and ECO-Pro. The configuration of cutting edges is optimised to provide long edge lives which, claims Leuco, means the edge life of the cutter is up to two-and-a-half times greater, reducing downtime. Leuco’s DIAProfiler is the tool recommended for medium to large batch sizes while the ECOPro, with its turnover knife design, is a particularly economical solution for small batch sizes. Leuco maintains that because of the specially adapted cutting edges and tool body, their nesting tools will provide you

with improved material yield and reduced cutting pressures - and they’ll offer you reduced incidence of tools dislodging. In the field of solid wood processing specifically glue-laminated timber Leuco’s Finger Joint Cutter, with its finger length of 4/4.5mm, has been designed to offer higher feed rates. Its HS finger joint cutters have an increased number of cutting edges which are treated with a special finish (Leuco Topcoat) and, say Leuco, this results in increased efficiency and productivity. The company also offers a hogger programme for finger jointing machines which have a cross-cutting unit. For chop, mitre and table saws, Leuco has developed a new sizing blade, the G5 which, it is claimed, offers much reduced noise levels. The tooth configuration is designed to enable fast cutting with tear free edges across a range of materials. Leuco claims a noise reduction of up to 10dB “or even higher”. The G5 features a thin kerf for minimal waste and is designed to offer extremely low vibration. For further details of Leuco’s cutting solutions, telephone 01279 657821.

The Festool brand of power tools available from Häfele is based on more that 75 years experience in manufacturing tools tailored to the needs of users. Starting back in the 1920’s with their first chainsaw, moving through the decades to the 50’s and the orbital sander then on to the 60’s and the portable circular saw. The 70’s saw the launch of the eccentric sander which was then followed in the 80’s by the RO series producing pleasing results from coarse to fine sanding and all from hand held tools. The 80’s also saw the JigSaw from Festool with triple saw blade guide for precision cuts. On to the 90’s which saw the Systainer storage and transport revolution. With the creative technology of the 90’s came the shortest rechargeable drill-screwdriver portables together with a new dimension in mobile dust extraction. The story continues into the 21st century with laminate trimmers, various saws, cordless C12 drills, new sanders and Domino - the next generation of biscuit jointers. So the Festool and Häfele partnership continues . . . Wagner Engineering’s objective in developing the new and unique AirCoat gun line was to reduce operator fatigue. This they have achieved with the GM 4100AC and GM 4600AC. Both sizes are available with 160 and 250 bar offering enhanced ergonomic interaction and a premium finish. With 437 gram, the GM 4100AC is the lightest gun in the market and has a small handle that fits to smaller hands. The GM 4600AC includes a long filter and has a regular handle. The AirCoat process - Airless and Air - has a unique ability to uniformly atomise the coating material at relatively low pressure (from approximately 60 bar). This is achieved by means of a central air guide (air cap) that is mounted directly on the nozzle body and surrounds the sprayed medium on all sides. The reduced overspray and material savings are up to 15% over the Airless process and up to 40% over air atomization. Due to improved air guidance, Wagner AirCoat* technology offers a soft and uniform spray pattern for high quality surfaces and reliable coating results. The new AirCoat guns offer a broad range of accessories and add-ons. The main application areas encompass woodworking and furniture industry, corrosion protection, steel industry and agricultural machinery industry. All kinds of materials like stains, textured paints, solvent and water based paints as well as 2K materials, high solids and UV paints can be used. Hubtex has worked in the furniture industry for many years assisting companies in reducing damage by much better product handling at all stages of it’s life. Handling a product better also leads directly to improvements in safety and productivity levels. As an example, worktops and laminate sheets can be a challenge as the product can be awkward and time consuming to handle. Rather than use traditional methods of bringing full packs of product down from storage to the ground, Hubtex trucks can take the operator(s) straight to the pick face. This saves an enormous amount of time, effort and damage, as most is done when multi handling of the product by a standard fork truck takes place. Dedicated picking platforms are available where the only role required is to pick and these are ideal for multi component orders or fast, mixed production runs. This unique product is a twin mastered fork truck which allows picking from both sides of the aisle. Where equipment with more versatility is required, Hubtex can provide a detachable picking platform. This allows bulk storage of product and, when picking is required, the platform is attached to the truck. The truck is then driven from the platform, allowing precise control of truck placement and consequently accurate picking. For more information call 01908-271245 or go to www.hubtex.co.uk

A good investment: Hubtex, improving all parts of any operation in terms of safety, productivity and damage.
