PIONEERING INNOVATIONS IN FIBRE OPTIC TRANSPORT

With over 40 years of experience, MultiDyne Fiber Optic Systems is established as a trusted, proven supplier of signal conversion and fibre-optic-based transport systems for the global broadcast and video production communities. MultiDyne’s pioneering innovations provide an unparalleled array of solutions serving applications such as electronic newsgathering (ENG), sport, live event production, government videos as well as digital cinema. Broadcast and cable networks, local TV stations, film production businesses and mobile production trucks represent some of the end users who benefit from MultiDyne’s creative solutions.

MultiDyne’s astute ability to serve customer needs today, yet continually look forward, keeps it ahead of industry trends and developments. This is of paramount importance as the broadcast industry is in a constant state of transition. To this end, MultiDyne brings fibre optic solutions to the market that addresses the needs of the customers today, namely, higherdensity platforms, 4K/UHD support, 12GB/s compatibility, etc, while planning for a future where IP and fibre bring new businesses and revenue opportunities to fruition.

UNMATCHED INNOVATION

MultiDyne’s reputation for innovation has been cemented through intensive research and development efforts, coupled with tireless dedication to engineering and customer service. In recent years, the company revolutionised the integration of portable camera and fibre optic transport with its SilverBACK range. The latest version, the SilverBACK 4K5 Camera Interface System puts all signals needed for multi-camera 4K/UHD TV production onto a single tactical or SMPTE hybrid fibre cable with robust connectivity from any remote location.

More recent MultiDyne product introductions such as the OG-3600 modular series and the rugged, high-density BullDog enclosure ideally represent today’s fibre optic application needs. The OG-3600 is MultiDyne’s latest entry for the open gear community and introduces a flexible new option for modular, high-density fibre transport solutions to support all bidirectional video, audio and data signal transfer needs.

The OG-3600 series of eight purposebuilt cards for broadcasters and content

producers, surpass competitive solutions in flexibility with options starting with the ultra-high capacity of the flagship OG-3601 module. Each is designed to fit more circuits and information onto a single module than previously possible. An unparalleled, highdensity design brings many applications and channels onto a single card that were previously dispersed across three, optimising space and reducing weights.

A unique MultiDyne advantage is the ability to mix and match so many of their fibre solutions. For example, the OG-3600 is an ideal complement to MultiDyne’s LightBrix line for lowerdensity field applications. Each OG-3600 can be seamlessly paired with a reciprocal portable LightBrix unit to suit a specific transport scenario. Another example is the compatibility between the OG-3600 series at a main location and a throwdown system in the field, such as the BullDog.

The BullDog is a purpose-built modular platform ideal for ENG applications that excels in flexibility, versatility and compact form factor for broadcasters and field production teams, including mobile

production trucks. Its architecture merges an ultra-compact (3.5”h x 6” w x 12” l), portable and rugged enclosure, designed to withstand harsh indoor and outdoor environments, with high-density I/O capacity and versatile signal compatibility for passing multi-channel programme audio, microphones and intercom, as well as 4K and HD-SDI video, 12G, control data, tally and power requirements.

In the Middle East, the BullDog is used across large venues to cover football and other sports. For example, a user can powerinject from a truck or studio and drop a BullDog on the sidelines of a field. The field engineer simply plugs microphones, cameras and/or support gear into the BullDog to return signals to the receive location.

On the 12GB/s front, MultiDyne’s latest, the FiberSaver-12G solution accepts upwards of 36 optical signals for transport over two fibres, all from a compact 1RU frame. An ideal scenario accommodates up to 18 SMPTE cameras or IP signals onto two fibres, without the need to manage wavelengths. These represent just some of the many MultiDyne solutions for flexible, multi-format fibre optic transport. More products and solutions can be found at http://www.multidyne.com.

AN IP FUTURE

Along with the rise of high-resolution UHD formats, the continued movement towards IP migration is compelling broadcasters to take a broader look at how their end-to-end architecture measures up to opportunities in the future. In fixed and mobile broadcast and production facilities, broadcasters are testing and applying new ways to efficiently move video, audio and data in alignment with today’s emerging trends. In the fibre transport universe, moving 4K and 8K requires more efficient point-to-point bandwidth management to accommodate higher data rates.

While point-to-point dark fibre transport remains the standard, for the deployment of fibre strands to move signals with supporting conversion and distribution gear, broadcasters rely on innovators like MultiDyne to establish a sensible gateway to the multipoint networking capabilities of IP. In the simplest sense, the basic copper-tofibre conversion established the foundation for broader opportunities associated with IP connectivity. By building stronger bridges between IP, fibre and copper connectivity, MultiDyne customers can leverage their existing fibre connectivity to add network traffic. Instead of point-topoint distribution limitations, migration to IP allows broadcasters to join or establish a broader multipoint network that offers an easy way to move a variety of video, audio and data signals on and off that IP network. IP represents an exciting new business opportunity for broadcasters and production teams working with fibre today. By looking forward while retaining focus on today’s needs, MultiDyne is uniquely suited to meet the fibre optic and transport needs of virtually all broadcast and production organisations.
