LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE GIRLS!

BIG

Gill Sherry

I

’ve never been a lover of long-haul flights. I tolerate them, because without them, the world would suddenly become a very large place indeed. So large, it would be almost impossible to travel to those far off destinations that are crying out for me to visit. They are, however, a necessary evil; a method of transportation to be endured rather than enjoyed. My last long-haul sufferance was no different. I was tired, uncomfortable and exceptionally bored. I’d already seen most of the in-flight movies and had no interest in watching the poor selection of TV programmes on offer. As a last resort, I opted for a music channel. Unexpectedly, my interest was piqued. For at least thirty minutes, I was entertained by non-stereotypical female singing stars. By nonstereotypical, I mean ‘large’. The first was the wonderfully talented Adele, whose voice is instantly recognizable the world over and whose attitude to stardom is a definite no-nonsense ‘take me as you find me’. Adele lets her singing do the talking and is uninterested in any opinion concerning her shape, size or style. As role models go, she has to be one of the best. Having recently won five Grammy Awards she is the undisputed queen of the music charts. And she didn’t have to starve herself to get there. All too often, we see size zero models, pop stars and actors strutting their stuff in magazines, on the TV and on the internet. The negative message portrayed is particularly damaging to young girls (and boys) who believe they too must be stick-thin in order to succeed. This subject has long since been an issue for campaigners raising awareness of Anorexia, Bulimia and other eating disorders and remains a valid concern for parents of children who idolize this false

image of the so-called ‘perfect ten’. Next up on the music channel was Kelly Clarkson. Kelly shot to fame in 2002 after winning the US talent show American Idol. She has since released seven albums, selling over 25 million worldwide, and has won three Grammy Awards. Her music is known for its themes of independence and self-empowerment for young women and she is to be congratulated not only for her success, but for the message she conveys by not conforming to the ‘norm’ when it comes to media expectations. I couldn’t help but notice, as Kelly’s music video came to an end, that the stick-thin theme wasn’t just restricted to my screen. The cabin crew on my flight, both male and female, were all of a certain size and alas, so typical of the conventional image associated with airline staff. Turning my attention back to the screen, it was now Jennifer Hudson’s turn. Jennifer also rose to fame after taking part in American Idol. Despite finishing in seventh place, she went on to release three studio albums and has appeared on both the big and small screen. In addition, she has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, has performed at the White House and is now a judge/coach on The Voice UK. Admittedly, Jennifer’s weight has fluctuated over the years but with a personal life as tragic as hers, even the most judgmental onlookers should surely cut her some slack. I must admit, it was a refreshing change to see these true performers gracing the screen. And it wasn’t over yet. Next up was Meghan Trainor. Her debut single, ‘All About That Bass’, sold 11 million copies and remains one of the best-selling singles of all time.

Like Adele, Meghan doesn’t conform to the music world’s idealism when it comes to image and for that reason, is considered an inspiration for children and young adults struggling with their own body shape. In fact, body image and womanhood are common themes in her music, encouraging women of all ages to embrace their curves rather than buckle under the pressure of what society considers ‘right’. We’re constantly reminded of what society believes is the perfect body and it’s no wonder the next generation associates it with wealth and success. But thanks to these ‘larger’ celebrities, many of whom come from humble backgrounds and are now wealthy beyond their wildest dreams, it should be easier to convince future young stars that you don’t need to be a matchstick to be hot. Suitable buoyed up after my thirty minutes of pop therapy, I turned to the in-flight magazine. The theme continued as Jennifer Lopez stared back at me from the page. Jennifer is the epitome of the body beautiful. Not only does she celebrate her curvaceous figure, she broke the mold when it came to general perception of what the female body should look like. Her many image-related accolades include ‘The Most Beautiful Woman’ of 2011, but it’s her career achievements that should really be celebrated. In 2012 she was ranked as ‘The Most Powerful Celebrity in the World’ following success as a singer, actress and dancer – without a single size zero in her wardrobe! As the cabin crew appeared with the drinks trolley, I was reminded of Beyonce’s ‘Lemonade’. How could I not mention Beyonce when talking about influential female superstars? Wonderfully curvaceous and exceptionally talented, Beyonce has won a total of 22 Grammys and was listed by Forbes as ‘The Most Powerful Female in Entertainment’ in 2015. Her net worth is estimated at $290 million and she was the subject of the term ‘bootylicious’ when it was first introduced in 2006; a term which was subsequently added to the Oxford English Dictionary. Who better

to inspire girls and young women and to convince them that zero is not their hero? Although they’re not skinny, these beautiful role models are far from obese so they’re not telling us that it’s ok to be overweight. What they are saying is be healthy, be happy, be confident and most importantly of all, be you. For once, I hadn’t entirely lost the will to live by the time I disembarked my flight. Of course, it’s easy to assume that body image insecurities only apply to girls; but boys have image concerns of their own. Thankfully, today’s role models are more diverse than ever before so if you know of a young man struggling with his body shape, ask him if he’s seen Rag ‘n’ Bone Man. He’s only human after all.

WINNER HEADS TO AMSTERDAM IN NOVEMBER

KUWAIT HOSTS RED BULL BC ONE CYPHER IN ARJAN SQUARE ON APRIL 28

F

or the seventh year, Kuwait will host Red Bull BC One – the world’s biggest and most fabulous one-on-one B-Boy competition. Every year, thousands of dancers across the globe vie for a chance to represent their countries at the World Final. Sixteen B-Boys earn the right to enter into an allout battle on the Red Bull BC One stage, but only one will be crowned the champion at Argan Square (facing AUK) on Friday April 28.. B-Boying, or breakdance as it is referred to, but rather breaking within the scene, is a style of dance that originated on the streets of NYC in the late 1970s. It is one of the four pillars of the Hip Hop culture along with DJing, MCing and Graffiti Art. Over the years, B-Boying has grown into a rich and vibrant scene, with active communities stretching across every corner of the globe. Each year, top dancers and crews continue to push the limits of breaking, evolving it into an art form unlike any other. The History of Red Bull BC One Red Bull BC One started in 2004 in Biel, Switzerland, and the World Final since has travelled to Berlin, Germany (2005), São Paulo, Brazil (2006), Johannesburg, South Africa (2007), Paris, France (2008), New York City, USA (2009), Tokyo, Japan (2010), Moscow, Russia (2011), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2012), Seoul, South Korea (2013), Paris, France (2014), Rome, Italy (2015) and Nagoya, Japan (2016). This year, Amsterdam Westergasfabriek will provide the stage for the world’s best B-Boys to battle it out oneNetherlands is home to celebrated crews such as HustleKidz and The Ruggeds as well as 2014 BC One winner Menno - a member of the Red Bull BC One All Stars who will join Poe One and C-Sick in supervising and judging the B-Boys’ performance during Kuwait’s BC One Cypher this year. 016

INTERNATIONAL WINNERS

B-Boy Menno to Judge B-Boys’ performance Menno Van Gorp represents the new generation of Dutch B-Boys. He is a dancer with heart, explosive energy and plenty of surprises. He is a master of smooth blow-ups, the mind-boggling moves that whip the audience into a frenzy. His signature moves are baby-freeze transitions, slides and rolls. B-Boy Menno started breaking around 2001. The first time he saw breaking was in the Run DMC video clip "It's Like That." He learned his first moves from his cousins and has been dancing ever since. Menno is an all-around B-Boy, making a living through working in shows, judging battles and teaching workshops. He has also delved into different aspects of dance, having created a solo show for theaters across his native The Netherlands. He is well respected for his painting and graphic design work, which he creates under the moniker Mennopoly. He hopes that Hip Hop will always be a part of his life and that he will be able to give back to the scene by teaching and organizing events.

artist. He also hopes to one day see the Hip Hop scene legalized in Kuwait. The secret behind his success is to keep believing in himself and to stay strong. He hopes to have a bright future and never quit B-Boying. Last year, B-Boy C-Sick’s head-spinning antics and power moves won him the Red Bull BC One Cypher Kuwait for the third consecutive year with a performance that left 15 of the top-level B-Boys in town behind. The stage was set on fire with Kuwait’s best 16 B-Boys jumping and spinning for the coveted prize. The event, which took place at Radisson Blu was judged by breaking legends B-Boy Cico (Italy), B-Boy Roxrite (Mexico) and B-Boy Nabil (France). The 2016 final battle was a repeat of the 2015 final between B-Boy Primo and winner, B-Boy C-Sick and was as intense. However, C-Sick’s non-stop moves seemed in control and within the rhythm, taming down his opponent and achieving a well-deserved win. More interestingly and after achieving 3 consecutive wins in Kuwait’s Red Bull BC One battles, B-Boy C-Sick is going to be part of this year’s cypher in Kuwait as a judge for the very first time.

B-Boy C-Sick: Kuwait’s National Qualifier Winner of 2016 and a judge in 2017! C-Sick first got into B-Boying back in 2006, after he saw B-Boys jamming in the street. His signature move is the 2000. C-Sick got his name when on a boat trip where everyone on the boat except for him, actually, got sick. The name stuck, but he has never been able to figure out why. Kuwaiti B-Boys practice at the Al Fanar Mall, but they still have to run away from the police as they pass and end up getting into considerable trouble for dancing. They also have trouble running into thugs and troublemakers, and often have to fight to keep practicing. But they persist. Kuwait’s society made C-Sick more open to people to the point where he can be who he is today, despite all the obstacles he faces as a Kuwaiti B-Boy. C-Sick lists his top- three inspirations B-Boys Menno, Casper and Thesis. He owes it to dancing for making him the person he is today, and for helping him understand people with a an active mind. Besides dancing, C-Sick intends to be a MC, a DJ or a graffiti

Issei Hori: Winner of Red Bull BC One World Final 2016 Issei Hori was the surprise winner of the Red Bull BC One World Final in Nagoya, in his native Japan, following a pulsating battle with two-time winner Hong 10. Crowned the champion, the 19-year-old’s high-energy performances were enough for the judges to give him the honors by three votes to two despite his relative inexperience on the global stage. "It's been amazing," says Issei in fast paced Japanese. "People were so supportive, and this is by far the biggest show I've ever taken part in. I'm very, very happy." After the amazing routines displayed in Japan, 2017 Red Bull BC One promises to be the best yet with the planet’s most talented B-Boys feeding off the passionate Dutch crowd to discover the next champion.

ABOUT RED BULL BC ONE Red Bull BC One is a global celebration of Hip Hop, combining dance, music, style and art. Every year, thousands of dancers across the globe vie for a chance to represent at the World Final. Since its inception in 2004, it has become the premier competition in the world of breakdancing, consistently attracting the best individual breakers on the planet. Since the first event in Switzerland, the annual competition has moved from Germany to Brazil, South Africa, France, USA, Japan, Russia, South Korea, and Italy.

FIVE LESSONS FOR LEADERS IN TURBULENT TIMES LBS experts highlight tactics to help business leaders handle volatile economic climate

S

ince the financial crisis of 2007/2008, volatility has returned to new highs. When faced with turbulent times, leaders in business, politics and society tend to relay contrasting responses. London Business School’s Adjunct Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship, Dominic Houlder and Executive Fellow of Strategy and Entrepreneurship, Nandu Nandkishore believe the future belongs to leaders who ignore the pressure to slash jobs, capture value and retreat, and instead choose to pursue sustainable value creation. They have drawn up a list of tactics to help business leaders handle today’s volatile economic climate: 1. Be agile Where in the past companies might have developed a strategy and created a step-by-step process to execute it, today leaders need a more iterative approach that lets them respond to the sheer pace of change and number of sources of disruption. 2. Build resilience Resilience and robustness is also required – an ability to absorb shocks. And while large corporations are often written off as lumbering dinosaurs, they are more like saltwater crocodiles who might look like dinosaurs, but when the opportunity is there, they’ll snap it up. 3. Stay true to your purpose It is vital for a leader to understand the sense of purpose that exists in an organisation. And a leader 020

APRIL 2017

should be very careful about tampering with it or changing it. In times of turbulence, it is up to leaders to understand, legitimise, spotlight and celebrate the motivations and values that underlie an organisation and communicate them through storytelling. 4. Create platforms to respond in good – and bad – times Any company will have good and back luck events in its life. What marks a company out is what it does when those events happen. Leaders can’t plan for those events but they can create a platform that makes it possible for them to respond to events. 5. Look to the medium term Leaders and management focused on short-term profits are more likely to cut out spare capacity, but that will also decrease their ability to respond to good luck and bad luck events. And although public companies always state a long-term vision this tends to be set so far in the future that it becomes meaningless. What gets missed is the medium-term – and this is the time frame that lets us consider the health of the platform, the meaning and purpose of the organisation, and the company’s absorptive capacity. The key to surviving in turbulent times is to choose to pursue new opportunities to create value. Hold on to the five pillars of agility combined with resilience, purpose, platforms and a focus on the medium term to help navigate the stormy times ahead.

DAMAS LAUNCHES EXCLUSIVE COLLECTION WITH PRINCESS NEJLA BINT ASEM FROM JORDANIAN ROYAL FAMILY Damas, the Middle East’s leading jewellery and watch retailer, has recently launched an exclusive collection in partnership with Princess Nejla bint Asem, a member of the Jordanian Royal Family. This collaboration plays on Damas’ increased efforts to support the local community through an educational programme that supports aspiring young talent. Princess Nejla, who is a jewellery designer in her own right, has helped to create a 16-piece line that will be sold exclusively in The Dubai Mall. The collection “Nejla Bint Asem” is a celebration of cultures, bringing the East and the West together by blending traditional oriental pieces with monochromatic hues and tones. Speaking of the inspiration behind the collection, Princess Nejla said: “I draw my inspiration from my days as a child walking through Downtown Amman and romanticizing about the semi-precious stones in the shops. Influenced by everything surrounding me, I grew up in an Arab and oriental environment, which helped me pave the way for designing jewellery.” She continued, “As a child my grandmother spotted my thirst for jewellery design and helped me nurture and develop the craft. We shared countless moments discussing gems, stones and different pieces, she would describe some of the most memorable pieces she's seen in her time and I would attempt to imitate them.”

GIVE PRESENCE NOT PRESENTS

D

aily questions pop up on my email and social medial DM from different parents asking me if spending too much time with their kids could spoil them. I also get asked about how much time parents should be spending with their children and how to avoid raising future brats. There are many things that can spoil kids (a list is coming up!) but your time and presence is surely not one of these things. Spending time with your children will help you and your children connect and build a healthy relationship. 1.Parental involvement helps build a child’s self esteem: Getting involved in your child’s extra curricular activities and life in general will help your child gain confidence. How does your involvement foster your child’s self esteem? Making it a priority to attend your child’s assembly or football game or even simply making sure that his homework is done are gestures that bring feelings of security to your child and send a strong message that he is loved. This is important to a child’s mental health. When these feelings do not exist, then a child is more likely to feel insecure and have feelings of low self-worth.

022

APRIL 2017

2.A strong relationship helps build a child’s communication skills: When parents spend time with their children and give presence, they spend more time talking to a child. This is extremely important and also beneficial to build vocabulary, ensure proper grammar use and even teach simple socializing skills. Children are great imitators and what better language to imitate than yours? 3.Your presence teaches important life lessons: All those significant values and ideals that you want to pass on to your children happen organically in your presence. Your actions speak louder than your words and your children will learn how to behave from simply being in your company. Having established that your presence will in fact not spoil your kids, let us look at what will. What would ensure that you are raising a future entitled adult? For starters, giving too many presents is definitely high on the list! Here are a few other examples: 1.Giving your kid everything he wants and not denying what will make him happy in the present moment. 2.Dressing your child in designer clothes, no matter the cost. Showing her that her outward appearance matters most of all. 3.Placing your child’s needs over those of your spouse. If she cries, you run to her immediately. If she interrupts, you give her your full attention.

“Too much love never spoils children. Children become spoiled when we substitute presents for presence” ~ Anthony Witham

4.Entertaining your child throughout the day. If she wants to play tea, then you put your plans aside. If she wants to watch her favourite movie for the hundredth time, you forget your idea of going for a walk and getting some sunshine. 5.You do not discipline your child when she acts up. 6.Her bullying or misbehavior with other children does not worry you or prompt you to take action. The list can go on but you can see where all of this is going. Teaching our kids early on to work for whatever they want; to earn a toy that they have asked for and not to over value material possessions will help raise an adult who works hard, understands that the world does not owe her anything and ultimately be an adult you will be proud to call your own.

Hi, please introduce yourself to our readers. I'm Aya. I’m 28 years old, half Tunisian, half Saudi. I was raised between KSA and France. Not a typical hybrid!

Tell us about your education. I have two HR masters. I graduated in 2014 in Paris and 2015 in London.

How did you get interested in fashion? When I was 16, I used to watch a lot of American video clips and I was interested in basketball and hip hop. At 18, I travelled to the US with my family and everything started there. I would mix the male and female style to define my own style. Then at 20 I grew up and started to change. When I was studying my last year in London I was taking mirror selfies while I was shopping and I was posting them on Instagram. I wasn't showing my face back in those days. In two months I got 7k followers. This was how it started.

You have an exceptionally unique look. Where does your style savvy come from, and where do you get your inspiration? My inspiration is in my brain. I inspire myself. When I see something that I like I buy it, I don't ask for anyone's opinion. I know what I want.

What does fashion mean to you? Your fashion reflects your personality. I'm moody. I have many styles. I always change colours, cuts, outfits etc.

When did you start blogging/ social media, and what was your motivation for getting started? I started uploading mirror selfies while I was shopping in the UK. It started like this until we moved to Dubai. I wasn't showing my face but when my family agreed that I could, everything changed for me. I got many business proposals and fashions shows. I didn't want to be famous I was just doing it for fun. I wasn't that motivated to success it just came into my life.

What’s your beauty regime? I drink a lot of water, 3 litres every day. People ask how I keep my weight stable and I have only one answer - I only drink water, nothing more.

What have been your keys to success? I guess the key to success is to stay who you are without focusing on wanting people to know you. I'm not perfect, and showing yourself as you are, with imperfections, makes people love you more.

How would you describe your own style? I guess I'm casual/chic.

What are some essentials you think everyone should have in their closets for the coming season? For this summer: Boyfriend jeans, ripped Fur slippers Metallic skirt Gucci slippers

Favourite quote? The less you care, the happier you will be.

Who is your primary audience, and what do you think keeps them coming back to your Instagram page? My main followers are Saudi. I don't really know, it might be the way I dress because 99% of my looks are from normal shops such as Zara and Bershka, which are accessible to everyone. I always post all my outfit's details, and for sure they appreciate that.

028

APRIL 2017

What word describes you best? Discreet or silent.

What are your guilty pleasures? Burgers and lotus.

What is your biggest dream in life? Having twins (baby girls).

What are your favourite hang out spots in Dubai? I love City Walk and Dubai Downtown.

What is your biggest accomplishment in Fashion Life Online? I haven’t reached it yet (Fashion week).

The most important advice regarding fashion/style you can give to women? Don't try to copy others, just be yourself. Don't ask for anyone's advice, as long as you’re comfortable with your outfit.

Do you have any upcoming events or announcements you wish to share? I'm working on it!

Your message for us at CP magazine: I would like to thank all members of the CP team for their time. It's a real honour to be part of your magazine. Thanks again!

HOW HEALTHY ARE YOU… REALLY? Take our quiz to find out exactly how healthy you are. Count up your As, Bs, Cs and Ds to find out your results.

Mostly A: Congratulations! You are at a low risk of health problems and you probably lead a healthy lifestyle. Mostly B: Even though you might be healthier than some people within your community, you need to be proactive about your health. Mostly C: You are at an increased risk and you could easily develop problems if you don’t take the necessary steps to improve your health. Mostly D: You are at a high risk for health problems so you’d better start acting fast!

A further (more important) check to do: You are mostly Cs and Ds but your BMI is at A or B: you are still at risk even if you don’t have a weight problem. You might have a condition called skinny fat where you are unhealthy and you are at an increased risk of having health and heart problems. You are mostly As but your BMI is at C or D: you don’t need to panic, your extra weight might be due to having more muscle percentages (which weigh more). So long as you are leading a healthy lifestyle, your weight is not a major issue.

BUILDING BRIDGES

L

ast month, I shared my frustrations regarding the lack of transport options in Kuwait. Getting around in this wonderful country is become more and more difficult and with no light at the end of the tunnel, it’s a gloomy outlook indeed. But it’s not just drivers who are suffering the consequences of Kuwait’s busy roads. Pedestrians are progressively at risk from injury or death due to the increasing volume of traffic on the road. Arabian Gulf Street, in particular, is especially hazardous and never more so than on a Friday. We all love Fridays; spending time with our family or friends, playing games on the beach, enjoying a picnic on the grass. For many of us, it’s the highlight of our week. However, struggling to cross the road to reach our beach-side destination is becoming more and more risky. It’s no secret that speed is an issue and accidents will continue to happen as long as drivers fail to respect other road users – including those on foot – so what can we do to reduce the risk? The obvious answer is to build bridges. The simple definition of a bridge is ‘a structure that allows people to cross an obstacle such as road’. Simple indeed; so why are there so few of them in Kuwait? 032

APRIL 2017

Unlike a pedestrian crossing, a bridge does not impact upon drivers, forcing them to slow down and, heaven forbid, delay their arrival at their intended destination. A bridge simply allows pedestrians to get from one side of the road to another without endangering their lives. Surely not too much to ask in this modern world of development and progress. You only need to look at other cities to see how bridges improve the logistics of getting from A to B. Amsterdam, for example, has over 1500 bridges. Admittedly, most of them span water but the theory is the same; and anything that prevents people from walking (or running) across the Gulf Road is a bonus. Even standing at the roadside, waiting for a gap in the traffic can be a hair-raising experience. It only takes one lapse in concentration for a driver to lose control, mount the kerb and end of the life of an innocent bystander. Aside from the safety issue, bridges can also enhance the beauty of a city. Adding another iconic landmark to our already impressive skyline can only be a bonus; not to mention a wonderful opportunity for the many talented architects operating in the region. So come on Kuwait, let’s build some bridges!

SAHAR “I love realism…… I take pictures of my models and then perform on canvas”

With collections based on nostalgia and social concerns, Sahar Najafi’s paintings are inspired by her own, spiritual need. But despite Iran’s unconventional attitude towards female artists, Sahar is able to communicate with her audience and convey her message through her art. 034

Please introduce yourself to our readers: I am Sahar Najafi. I was born in 1986 in Shiraz, Iran. I have been interested in art since childhood and started my professional work at 18 when I moved to Tehran to study in the field of painting at university. I have held many solo and group exhibitions in Iran and participated in many national and international competitions such as Fajr and Faber-Castell.

Tell us about your education: I have a Bachelor’s degree in painting and a Master’s degree in art history both from Shahed University Tehran, Iran (I was top student in both).

Can you tell us a little about your early years and what influenced you to become a painter? 6 years ago, after completion of my university studies, I moved back to Shiraz and started teaching art in universities and private institutes. In the meantime, I continued my personal activities too. Based on orders in the field of publishing and advertising I also have some illustration activities these days. In addition to other activities, I am working on a new painting collection and hope to finish this within three months. About what makes me a painter, during the last years of my study I doubted I would continue as painter and spent most of my time on illustrations. However, I believe there is no clear line between illustration and painting - even my illustrations are a kind of painting – and I turned to painting again.

How would you describe your art? I have a kind of feminine attitude in my works. The content of works is based on my social attitude. The main structure of my two recent collections is women. My first collection is about a woman’s nostalgia and her childhood, and in the recent collection I tried to work on social concerns and the contradiction between tradition and social attitudes towards women.

How would you describe the art scene in Iran? Well, I have to say that the art situation in Iran has seen substantial growth during recent years, especially in traditional art, cinema, music, fashion design and graphics; but in painting it hasn’t made noticeable progress. There is no substantial request in the governmental sector and professional artists often work with Iranian or foreigner art dealers.

036

APRIL 2017

As a female artist in Iran, what are some of the difficulties that you face? In recent years better conditions are provided for female artists and it can be said that there is less gender difference in comparison to the past. Women have found a suitable position in art events. The main problem still remains unconventional attitudes toward women.

Can you explain your technique? I often use oil colours and sometimes mix media in my paintings.

What are your materials of choice for your work? I love realism and in most of my works after finalizing sketches I take pictures of my models and then perform on canvas.

How do you choose your subject(s)? Usually I select my subjects from the social matters around me in society and try to show my concerns in my works.

Where does the magic all happen? Describe your studio. Usually it happens in my studio but sometimes even when I am in bed a clue sparks in my mind and I quickly write it down in a booklet and think about it in my studio later. My studio is a room in my apartment, a lovely corner where I spend most of my sweet time alone, but sometimes my little boy also paints with me. My studio is like a cocoon and I am born by creating an artwork like a butterfly; a white canvas is a window to me and I can start flying through this window.

What does your art say about the world? As mentioned before I talk about woman. What you can find in my works is common between women and most of them agree with my point of view.

What inspires you and your work? Creating artwork is a spiritual need for an artist. When I don’t work for a couple of days I feel depressed and confused. Moreover, when a collection comes to an end, communicating with an audience and selling an artwork gives me an additional incentive.

What have been some of your most important influences that shaped how you paint today? Part of it relates to my being a woman and my understandings about my gender. The other part is related to society and events around me. Unfortunately there are some contradictions in religion and social rules and my works try to convey this message.

How do you promote your art and where do you sell it? Usually I exhibit my works in private galleries and art dealers buy my artworks.

What do you hope to accomplish with your art? An artist’s outcome can be categorized in two categories. The first one is the spiritual aspect that is self-satisfaction and the second one is fame and generating revenue.

Tell us about your other hobbies. Art is obviously my main hobby but I like movies, music and also sports. However, I spend most of my time playing with my little boy and painting in child worlds.

What type of music do you listen to? My favourite music is Iranian traditional music and also the new generation which is a mix of traditional music with western instruments.

What are some of your future plans? I have sketched up two new collections and I have decided to finish and exhibit these collections next year. However, to improve my training program I would like to establish an institute.

Your message for us at CP magazine: I wish success and happiness for you and your readers and I wish I could exhibit my works to your readers too. www.cpmagazine.net

WHOSE PLACE IS IT ANYWAY?

Natasha E. Feghali

I

t is becoming a struggle in the workplace as we move into the 21st century and jobs are becoming scarce while the creative economy is thriving. Or is it? In an economy that can be overcrowded with ideas and pitches happening day and night, how do you set yourself apart? A core challenge over the next decade will be to attract and retain a skilled workforce as the labor market continues to tighten, technology continues to evolve, and fewer foreign students immigrate for job opportunities. This situation is exacerbated as companies find themselves managing four generations of workers. There is much agreement in business about generational diversity in the new millennium for workers. First, many business researchers agree that there are four very different generations in the workplace: the Veterans, the Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y. Second, many business leaders and managers agree that getting these groups to work together effectively is challenging. Finally, many workers agree that the different generations look at each other with confusion and suspicion as they interact together in the workplace.

A new problem There is a serious new problem in the workplace and it has nothing to do with downsizing, global competition, pointy-haired bosses, stress or greed. Instead, it is the problem of distinct generations (Veterans, Baby Boomers, Gen X and Gen Y) working together and often colliding as their paths cross. Individuals with different values, different ideas, different ways of getting things done and different ways of communicating in the workplace have always existed. As a result, generations are colliding in the workplace and business professionals are working hard to contain the organizational damage that occurs. Managers and leaders must first understand each of these groups before they can stop generational collisions from occurring in the workplace. Leaders must remain open to new ideas and provide constant feedback, working with managers and staff to shape the company’s strategic vision. They must avoid projecting their own expectations about work and remain open to different perspectives based on generational attitudes. With 040

APRIL 2017

the variety of multigenerational employees in today’s workplace, companies can no longer abide by traditional rules of leadership and management. Organizations can achieve real strategic advantage by embracing the diversity among generations to create a flexible work environment that values all people and keeps them productive, regardless of age. Veterans, Boomers, Generation X and Generation Y workers are very different and this makes for interesting group dynamics. Defined by their age, date of birth and critical societal events, each generation brings its own strengths and limitations to the workplace. By understanding the strengths, limitations and values of each generation, managers and leaders can minimize generational collisions. In doing so, managers and leaders will avoid the organizational conflict, employee turnover and lost productivity that occurs when business professionals are unaware of the differences of the four generations in the workplace.

Additional Tips While the above descriptions are generalizations, everyone will think independently from each other. lIn order to create an environment conducive to productivity, the best way to engage everyone from each generation is to host meetings to discuss the needs and lifestyles of each employee. Having open communication and utilizing each generation’s strengths will produce the ideal workplace for all current employees and attract other talent. lFeel free to experiment with mixed age groups. Pairing up people from different generations strengthen the positive attributes from each. lCoordinate surveys among your employees to get a feel for your employees’ needs. lDevelop an incentive plan that pertains to the different interests, based on where your employees are in their lives.

What is your brief statement on being the brand ambassador for SPLASH?

of its constantly evolving style, their effort, and their extremely successful attempt to be constantly doing something new and current.

SPLASH is a wonderful and iconic brand in the UAE and Middle East and is very much loved by its consumers. I am extremely happy to be a part of the continuing journey that is SPLASH. I am happy to be associated with their fashion and ideology.

If you were asked for any input while designing the next SPLASH collection, what would it be?

Can you share with us the basis on which you select the brands that you endorse? I think when I find in it something that resonates with me. It is a good basis to select not only the brands but also the films. I think I have been extremely fortunate with the brands that I endorse; both those that I have worked with or am working with now. It has been a very easy choice for me in the past with the kind of names I have been working with.

Is there anything in particular about SPLASH that stands out for you the most? I believe the whole ideology of the company sets SPLASH apart from other brands. I think SPLASH has very loyal consumers. Once consumers are introduced to the brand, they remain loyal. I believe this is because

SPLASH already has some wonderful people working with them who I have been interacting with. Today, I met with one of their head designers who had worked with me already a few years back in Mumbai when he was independent. He is a great designer. So, I know their team and that makes it all the more wonderful as I kind of know the thought that goes behind everything and what’s happening.

If you were not an actor, what would you have been? I have no idea! Maybe something that involved lot of travel and that had variety.

What do you do in your free time at home? I watch a lot of movies and TV serials. I think these days there is such a good variety of TV shows and I think that’s what we all do now in our spare time.

Would you be interested in doing TV serials? I have no problem with any medium or language. I have done films in Tamil, Telgu and Malayalam. For me the medium of cinema is to have all the elements right and not to have any do’s and don’ts.

How do you feel about working again with Salman

I believe the whole ideology of the company sets SPLASH apart from other brands.

044

APRIL 2017

I have no problem with any medium or language. I have done films in Tamil, Telgu and Malayalam.

I think everyone around me is doing such amazing work. All of my contemporaries, colleagues - men and women - are great. It is an interesting time for Hindi cinema now, they are coming up with some amazing performances, films, and stories. It is really an interesting time.

Looking back at your journey in Bollywood, is there any phase where you felt you had hit a low or did not perform as per expectations? If so, how did you work on getting back on track?

Khan in the movie ‘Tiger ZindaHai’? I think it is a very successful franchise. Actually, I won’t call it a franchise yet but with Kabir I always had the most amazing experience working. His aesthetics and everything he brings to the film are wonderful. This, in fact, is being directed by Ali, who was the director of Sultan - I also worked in his first film MerayBrother KiDulha – so it’s an amazing group of people to work with. Yash Raj is producing it and I am really looking forward to it.

How do you deal with stress? What do you do to relax? I think you never know those moments that bring you relaxation. There are so many moments in between work that can help. It could be the sun, it could be a child playing, or anything that you see in that moment that gives you joy and for that moment you are free from all the stress and pressure of work.

Can you drag yourself from this stress? Are there moments when you say to yourself that today I will not do anything and just relax? No, it’s not so easy for me. It tends to happen on its own and not when I plan it. I think you get the rest most when it comes spontaneously and unexpected rather than when you plan it.

Is there anyone in Bollywood who you have worked with or not worked with who has inspired you?

Honestly, it's extremely difficult to dissect your own career. But, if I look back at my journey, the only thing I have done is work hard and allowed destiny to play its role. I am a big believer in destiny. There was probably just a small phase where I wasn't able to focus on my work, and I know that very well. But, I believe that it's important to give your best in everything that you do. I have done my best in every film or project that I have worked on.

Have you been offered any films in the Hollywood? No, not at the moment.

Which has been your favourite role so far and what is one role that you would love to do in the future? I think one part of cinema that I have not been a part of is a period film which to me, is amazing and something I find very dramatic and cinematic. I love that world.

And, who would you like to act along with in such a film? I think as an actor, you do not think of which actor you would like to work with but you rather think about the story and the film and that would come to you as a package with the director’s vision. That’s how we see it.

These days, it’s all about Social Media. How do you manage it? It is about what you wish to share. It’s about what you want to put out there. I do really agree that life has changed since Social Media has come out so big. I remember a few years ago there was no trend of you going to an event and the photos coming out online with everyone following. Now that’s the way it is and I cannot say which one is better; it’s just the way it is. www.cpmagazine.net

ARMANI Luminous Silk Foundation

Product Photo by: Vania Attieh (www.vania-photography.com)

As the old proverb says, ‘Old love never dies’. This is exactly the kind of love I feel for this foundation. Beauty products come and go but luckily this foundation stays; and why shouldn’t it? It was launched in 2000 when fashion designer Mr. Armani, together with uber successful make-up artist Pat McGrath, decided to create this creamy but lightweight formula that feels as exclusive as the clothes brand. Today, many brands create shades for all different skin tones but a few years back it wasn’t that common and with Pat’s background - having a Jamaican mother growing up in the North of London where make-up was designed only for fair British women - she had to magically mix and match colours to create the right shade. With that in mind she made sure to develop all different kinds of shades. Armani Luminous Silk Foundation is one of the few (if not the only one) to cover the whole spectrum with 24 different shades, from a fair neutral shade to the most deep intense warm colour. This foundation obviously deserves to be the Iconic Product of the Month in CP Magazine as it is one of the most versatile products in any make-up artist’s kit. It’s perfect for everyday use, for a night out when you wear heavier make-up, or for a special occasion like a wedding. It photographs very well and its dewy finish makes any skin glow without looking oily. This base can be applied with your fingers or with a brush giving light strokes in the direction of your facial hair growth, to create a more fresh and natural kind of look – that ‘I just woke up like this’ look. It’s also perfect for a more built-up look using a wet beauty blender and by adding layers.

Edna Trogen was born and raised in Colombia. She is married with two girls, aged 17 and 11 years old. She lived in Sweden for 7 years before moving to Dubai where she has been living and working for the past 11 years. Her make-up roots are based on the Latin American Full Make-up Style but have changed over the years due to being influenced by the Scandinavian minimalistic style Less is More! After having dabbled in modeling, she was slowly drawn to the world of make-up where her interest has developed into a passion and career. She is currently working as a make-up artist for TV commercials and fashion magazines in the region. www.cpmagazine.net

iCandime

DJ i-Candi “There is no better judge than the crowd” Having made a name for herself in London’s music scene, DJ i-Candi is now playing the decks in Kuwait. But what’s it like being a female DJ in the Middle East and what’s the secret to working the crowd?

Please introduce yourself to our readers. Who is DJ iCandi?

Hi, my name is DJ iCandi. I am a DJ from the UK who has lived in Kuwait for 6 years.

Tell us about your education:

I studied sound engineering in London before I became a professional DJ and found that it was hugely helpful dealing with different types of sound equipment in different settings. Since the 1990s there have been many technological advances in the equipment used. As a club DJ you show up to a nightclub and use the equipment they have at the venue, so having the know-how to be versatile was definitely valuable.

Any childhood memories you live by:

As a child I was actually quite shy and awkward. I wouldn’t say that there is a particular memory that I live by, but I did find that when I started playing professionally in London I gained a confidence that had been lacking throughout my younger years. I would say that memories of being young and unsure help me embrace the present and have the confidence to express who I really am now.

When, where and how did it all start for you in terms of Deejaying and music?

I come from a musical family and was always surrounded with instruments and different styles of music growing up. I used to play

048

APRIL 2017

the violin and piano so could read music and had an understanding of the structure of music, which was really helpful when I learned to mix. I started playing the decks when I was 15 years old. I had some friends that played and I remember watching them and wondering what was actually going on when the record was put on the deck. Yes it was many years ago, in the days of vinyl! Once I learned I caught the bug and when my mum saw that I was serious about wanting to learn, she bought me a set of Technics 1210 turntables. After that every spare penny I had went into my vinyl collection. In the following years I played at house parties and a few times publicly, but it wasn’t until I had finished my studies in London that I was offered a residency at a night club in Chelsea. I was out with a friend and there was a DJ playing who was not doing the best job. As someone who could mix, I couldn’t help but notice and mentioned this to a person we were with. That person turned out to be the one who booked the DJ! He gave me the opportunity to play a set and after that they offered me a weekly spot.

Was there anyone who really helped you on your way?

My mum was my main support and she helped me on my way initially by buying my decks which really kicked the whole thing off. In the years after that we would talk a lot about my image and being creative and having fun with my style. She was very happy to see my progression as I began playing in more and more clubs around London and would listen to my mixtapes, no matter what style of music I was mixing!

Can you remember some of your first DJ gigs - how did it feel when you first got on the decks and played to a crowd?

I remember some of the first times I played in public. It was very nerve racking! I used to get the shakes and I always hoped no-one would see the needle shaking as I put it onto the record. Back then there were hardly any female DJs so it really did feel like all eyes were on me, because of the novelty. But there was also a feeling of people not really believing I would play as well as a man and that they were waiting for me to make a mistake. There really is nothing like playing to a crowd though, having them join you on a musical journey for a few hours and seeing their response. Music appeals to our emotions and memories and providing a backdrop for times when friends get excited on hearing their favourite track or discover a new song that they can’t get enough of is so much fun.

What’s it like being a female DJ in Kuwait?

Being a female DJ in Kuwait is great. In a sense it reminds me of my earlier years as a DJ as there are people who are sometimes surprised when they see a woman on the decks. I really enjoy bringing the music I love to new crowds.

Who is your biggest inspiration?

I take inspiration from the people who hear me play. I note their reactions to songs and styles of music because a huge part of being a DJ is providing the right vibe to the right crowd. There could be a tune that I love which doesn’t translate so well on the dance floor and equally tunes that are undeniably amazing for crowds, but that I wouldn’t put on my ‘most played’ playlist.

What style of music are you playing?

I play dance music, particularly house. I love big basslines and you will always hear British influences throughout my sets. I have been known to play different genres though, so you never know what you may get depending on the event.

If you could be eternally stuck in one year's music scene, which year would it be?

Oh wow! I think to be stuck in one year’s music scene for eternity would be like torture. No matter how much you liked the songs of that year, they would become annoying hearing them over and over again!

Why did you choose the name ‘i-candi’?

I chose the name iCandi as it’s a fun play on words and it contains 5 letters of my first name.

What is one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you hear it?

Dear David - I’ve Been Waiting. This has been on my playlist at home for the last few years and there is something about it that gets me every time. I haven’t become bored of it yet. It is my longest running favourite tune (I still wouldn’t choose to play it for eternity and ruin it though!).

What is one mistake you see a lot of up-andcoming DJs making?

One mistake I see quite often is DJs playing only for themselves and not working the crowd. It is easy for anyone to play a list of their favourite songs, however the art of DJ’ing is in creating a vibe that appeals to the audience and draws them in to taking the journey with you.

The coolest place you have worked?

One of the coolest places I have played was alongside DJ Whoo Kid (G Unit) at a private event where 50 Cent launched his sneakers. It was an amazing party where 50 Cent got on the mic to one of the tracks for an impromptu performance on the dance floor. Everyone went absolutely crazy!

What achievements are you most proud of?

I am very proud that my music has enabled me to travel to countries I had never visited before. I think that travel is a great opportunity to grow and develop.

What are some of your other hobbies?

I love spending time with my family first and foremost. In the last few years I have taken up snowboarding which is so much fun. In my head I’m a pro but in reality I still have a way to go! I am also a bit of a bookworm.

What are some of your future plans?

I will be joining my partner in crime DJ Maha on the Driveback (1-3pm) 99.7 RKFM for Dance Week on the 16-20th April. I love to go and join her for some fun on the air waves whenever I get the chance. Future plans are to keep enjoying playing music to the people of Kuwait and beyond and living life to the fullest.

050

APRIL 2017

What advice would you give to aspiring DJs?

I would encourage them to get as much experience as possible playing in front of people. There is no better judge than the crowd.

If you were showing someone around who’d never been to Kuwait, where would you take them?

I would take them to the desert, which is what I did with my brother and sister-in-law when they came and they had a brilliant time. There is something to be said for the profound silence of the desert which you seldom experience anywhere else in the world. I also like to take people to Souk Al-Mubarakiya and the shooting ranges.

FLAWLESS BEAUTY & since 2010

with EDNA TROGEN This month, CP Magazine is showing our special readers the top 5 products for a flawless SMOKEY EYE! You don’t need to break the bank and buy unnecessary products that will just look great in your mirror cabinet. If you master your techniques of blending and what colours go well with your skin tone and eye colour, you can be your own make-up artist with just a few tools.

1. NARS eye primer is a new personal favourite. Its almost invisible formula makes it easy to apply on the lid and it dries immediately. This small tube will ensure your eye make-up stays on flick all day long.

2. Caviar Sticks by Laura Mercier are creamy eye shadows

on a pencil. These are the easiest products I know to create a smokey eye. Each stick is long-wearing and smudge-free once it’s dry. It rubs easily on the lids to create a subtle smoky eye or you can use it as a base and top it with a more pigmented eye shadow. You can smudge it with a finger while it’s wet or with an eye shadow flat brush on the lid, from the root of the lashes to the brow bone. Cocoa and Tuxedo are my two personal favourite colours for dark smokey eyes. Available in 18 shades at Laura Mercier counters in Bloomingdale’s, Kuwait.

I was very excited as I had always been a big fan of the Smurfs and as I already had previous experience with Angry Birds. I had enjoyed the experience and I was sure this would be a great experience too. Unfortunately, I could not go to the premiere of Angry Birds due to my pregnancy. What is Smurf Willow's role in the movie? Smurf Willow is a leader of a group of Smurfettes who live in a forbidden forest. She is almost the female counterpart of Papa Smurf. Do you find any resemblance in the character of Smurf Willow with your own? Yes, I think we have similarities in terms of strong confidence, showing authority and managing and leading. However, Smurf Willow is quiet and calm whereas I am very active and the opposite in this regard. Did you consider this as a challenge? Why and how did you overcome it? Yes, it was a challenge. It was not about being myself but rather understanding the character of Smurf Willow properly and thoroughly so that the viewers see and feel her as a character of the movie rather than trying to find me as they are already familiar with me in my public life. Which is your favourite character in the movie besides Smurf Willow? Smurfette for sure! I also liked one of the new Smurfs we see in this movie.

been dubbed in English by Julia Roberts. I basically had to follow her lip movement and it helped a lot. What is the response of your family and friends? They were all very excited; and who’s not a fan of the Smurfs?! The whole family is a big fan of the little blue creatures. My niece was my date for the Premiere in Beirut. She was extremely excited and the biggest fan of Smurfs! Any unforgettable moments during the dubbing that you would like to share with our readers? It was, in general, a great experience working with so many talented people and I enjoyed every bit of it. As a mother yourself how important do you think is the need for Arabic content in this region? To me it is very important. Dubbing works well with animated films; plus it’s nice for kids as they can engage with it more in a language they’re more familiar with. Would you like to get involved in similar projects in the future? Yes, if there is a sequel to Angry Birds or Smurfs, I would love to work again on similar projects. How often do you go to the movies? I am a very big fan of movies. I go 5 times or more every week to movies. I really enjoy the experience.

What was the biggest surprise you discovered about the Smurfs while dubbing? The biggest surprise was to discover that there are more hidden Smurfs other than the ones we are already familiar with.

Your message for your fans and our readers in Kuwait: I was very overwhelmed from the love and response I got from the people of Kuwait during the premiere, right from the airport to the cinema, and I want to thank all of them for showing their love and support. You are amazing!

What special preparation did you do to get the best results for dubbing? Well, I had excellent support from Sony Pictures; the team was extremely talented and supportive. Also, my previous experience with Angry Birds helped so it was not very difficult and also because it had already

Your message for our magazine: Keep supporting cinema. I know Kuwait is very supportive to all kind of cinema and I urge people to go to the cinema and experience the big screen and enjoy all the options you can such as the 3D, IMAX, 4D and everything else. Enjoy the Smurfs movie!

FASTING OR SMALL MEALS FOR QUICKER RESULTS? Jamie & Alana Karehana

W

hat’s the best eating strategy for fat loss? This is the question on the mind of those who are ready and motivated to transform their physique. A quick online search produces two popular eat-for-fat-loss strategies: Intermittent Fasting versus Six Small Meals. Which strategy works best? And which should you follow? Let’s find out… Intermittent Fasting: this eating strategy cycles between periods of eating and periods of fasting. The content of your meals during eating periods is not a factor. Some cycle between eating and fasting each day, creating a small window for eating and fasting for at least 16 hours, while others cycle eating and fasting across several days, taking as much as 48 hours at a time to fast. Pros: Humans have been fasting for thousands of years. Our bodies are well equipped to handle periods of fasting. Research shows that fasting produces benefits for disease prevention, metabolic health, weight loss and even life extension. Some find it less work to fast rather than to plan for several small meals. During eating periods you get to eat whatever you want. Cons: Abstaining from nourishment for long periods of time can be challenging, especially when food is all around you. Socially it can be awkward to skip meals while your friends and family break bread together. Some find themselves overeating during eating cycles, and some find the ongoing absence of food to aggravate food obsession and to produce an unbalanced focus on food.

produce fat loss results? And which one is better? Let’s dive deeper into what makes these eating strategies work… 1. Meal Timing: When you eat is a factor with both of these eating plans. This means that subscribers to both plans are required to wait until the appointed time to eat. So mindless snacking, or grabbing a muffin just because it’s there, is out of the question. This reduces overall calories, which is key to weight loss, and explains why both plans produce results. 2. Meal Content: The Six-Small-Meals plan focuses on the content of each of your small meals in great detail. Your meals contain lean proteins, fiber-filled veggies and limited complex carbs. This detailed control of calorie content is largely why this plan is a sure bet for fat loss, not just weight loss. Intermittent Fasting does not consider the content of your meals during eating periods. 3. Meal Size: The Six-Small-Meals plan also focuses on the exact size of your meals, which makes sense since you are eating six times each day, and excess calories would quickly add up. Typically this is done by weight, so as you pack your meals for the day you’ll be using a food scale to ensure that you have exactly the right amount of lean protein and complex carbs. Veggies are often measured rather than weighed. Intermittent Fasting does not consider the size of your meals during eating periods.

So What’s the BEST Eating Strategy for FAST Results? Six Small Meals: this eating strategy, of breaking the traditional 3 square

meals into 6 smaller meals that are spaced 2-3 hours apart, has been used by body builders and fitness competitors for years. The content and size of each meal is an important factor of this eating plan. Meals early in the day contain lean protein, fiber-filled veggies and a small portion of complex carbs, while meals later in the day are smaller and do not contain any complex carbs. All meals are low in fat. Pros: You never feel hungry. By fueling up every 2-3 hours you never get the feeling of deprivation that comes with fasting. Energy levels are steady and high due to the constant supply of wholesome calories. Fat loss results are steady, and, when done with an exercise plan, muscle is maintained. Cons: You have to plan ahead. Every. Single. Day. Get used to carrying around a small cooler filled with containers of chicken, broccoli, brown rice and sweet potatoes. Each meal is small, so restraint is required. Unless you are including the occasional cheat meal, or cheat day, there is no room in this diet for empty calories or comfort foods.

Conclusion The facts are out there to prove that both of these eat-for-fat-loss strategies work. There are photos of real, actual people who have subscribed to each of these methods and have gone from flabby to lean. Both methods irrefutably work. But why? How can two methods that utilize opposing strategies both 060

APRIL 2017

As we’ve discussed, both of the eating strategies above are capable of producing results. This is due to the fact that both plans result in a lowered caloric intake. When it’s all said and done, weight loss comes from caloric balance. Remember the junk food diet where the professor lost weight eating restricted calories of only vending machine food? As long as you are taking in fewer calories than you are burning, you will end up losing weight. While both of the strategies above end up curbing your calories, only the SixSmall-Meals plan encourages wholesome calories that are ideal for burning fat and building muscle, which is why this is the plan most used by body builders and fitness competitors. When it comes down to you choosing your own eating strategy it’s important to determine what will work best with your lifestyle. If carrying a cooler with you and making time to stop every 3 hours to eat a meal is simply not something you can see yourself doing, then Intermittent Fasting may produce better results for you. The key is to figure out a plan for restricting calories that you would realistically be motivated to stick with. And the more wholesome the content of those restricted calories, the better and quicker your results will come! Want more guidance as you take your body from flab to fab? We'd love to help you! PHUKET Thailand often brings to mind the hustle and bustle of Bangkok. Alternatively, the other imagery is the blue and green landscapes of Phuket. Phuket is Thailand’s largest island surrounded by another 32 islands. With a yearly average temperature of 32 degrees, it is no wonder Phuket sees over 100 million tourists a year. Pack your sunscreen and get ready for lots of fun in the sun!

1. the MUST see... Phi Phi Island. This is Thailand’s Superstar Island pictured on virtually every postcard. It does not disappoint. There are several options to get there and I highly recommend you spend an entire day so depart early morning. If you are looking for ‘The Beach’, head to Maya Island. It does get crowded with tourists, but it’s still a beautiful beach to see. http://www.gokohphiphi.com 2. the MUST eat… I will be brutally honest here. Just about every restaurant in Phuket does Thai cuisine and all offer some sort of additional cuisine to accommodate foreigners. The most popular are Italian and German. With international cuisine considered, I can’t help but recommend The Corner Restaurant; their buffet is delicious. It is a bit out of the way but a short ‘Grab Taxi’ ride will get you there for much less than the regular taxi cabs. http://thecornerphuket.com 3. the MUST shop… If shopping malls are your thing then Jung Ceylon and Central Festival are your two main choices, but if you happen to be in Phuket on a Sunday you absolutely must go to old Phuket Tow and stroll along Lard Yai or Walking Street. It features many shops and food stands where you can grab a souvenir while sampling some wonderful Thai street food. http://www.phuket.com/phuket-magazine/phuket-walkingstreet.htm 4. the MUST stay… For a five star luxury experience that won’t break the bank, look no further than the Phuket Panwa Beachfront Resort. Situated on a secluded bay with its own private beach, you will at times feel you are in a James Bond scene. Almost all rooms have a view of the Andaman Sea, and the service at this resort is top shelf. Definitely check out their spa packages. http://www.phuketpanwabeachresort.com 5. the MUST do off the beaten path… Big Buddha. At 45 meters tall sitting atop a mountain with spectacular 360 degree views of Phuket, Big Buddha is worth the ‘Grab Taxi’ ride. It is a free attraction and you can also see monkeys on the grounds there (be careful not to get too close). http://www.phuket-big-buddha.com

You may have noticed I have mentioned the ‘Grab Taxi’ app twice in this article and I must say it is a money saver. Compared to the ‘normal’ taxi rates, ‘Grab Taxi’ will save you a tremendous amount of money. For more information check out http://www.phuket.com

www.cpmagazine.net

067

Hi, please introduce yourself to our readers: Hello, I´m Souhair Al Qayssei, an Iraqi journalist, senior news anchor at MBC, TV presenter, celebrity partner with United Nations World Food Programme, a loving daughter and a person who loves nature; taken by the beauty of the creation.

Tell us about your education: I´m a dentist. However I studied video journalism because media has been my great passion since I was a child. I’ve had media experience since I was 10 years old.

So what motivated you to pursue a job in a different genre? When I was a little girl, a team from Iraqi TV came to visit our school to choose students with high grades to participate in their TV show called ‘Cinema for Kids’. During the show, the organisers noticed how interactive and natural I was on screen and they told me how much potential I had. When I turned sixteen, the Iraqi media organisers came to me again and gave me a job opportunity as an English-speaking radio presenter. However, at that time, my parents thought that I should focus on school and on being a dentist. At that age I agreed, but when I later came to Dubai, I tried to show my family that I could do both and managed to do so right up until I decided to focus mainly on media. This was when I officially become a part of Al Arabiya TV. With God´s grace things only got better, and that´s where it all started. Since I was a little girl my passion has been to influence others and encourage the community to make the world a better place.

What was your big breakthrough? My breakthrough was with Al Arabiya TV. We created a new TV show, which was the first of its kind. It was the first debate show launched from Baghdad, because for once the political diversity allowed different parties to use their voice and also to debate publicly on screen. In 2010, Baghdad was the most dangerous place for journalists to work, but we didn´t think about that. We worked there for thirty-three days with passion and succeeded so much that The New York Times wrote about the show. It was such a historical moment for us. I was so proud. I continued my career producing and presenting a daily show about the crisis in Iraq. Later I presented The Forth Hour, which became a highly rated hour about Gulf Affairs. In 2015, I was chosen by United Nations World Food Programme to join their Worldwide Celebrity List as a partner to be the voice of the voiceless, to support 3.2 million internally displaced people and refugees who are the victims of war against ISIS. I’m so humble that God has given me so many amazing opportunities in my life.

Looking back on your teen years, can you see how your personal characteristics would lead you to become a journalist? I was a good reader, passionate about media and presenting. I started to write and produce stories for Baghdad FM station from my house when I was 16 years old. After that time, the radio station offered me a job.

How was the experience working from Iraq as a journalist and what were some of the challenges you had to face? I worked from there in a high-pressure environment. I remember that Iraq was still among one of the most dangerous places for journalists across the world. I have lost several collogues there. It broke my heart when the studio where I recorded my 068

APRIL 2017

show, back in 2010, was destroyed by terrorists; even the lovely woman who used to cook for us was killed. The memory brings tears to my eyes even now.

What inspires you? Success stories, children’s energy and creation of beauty. The feeling of giving and supporting vulnerable people inspires me to do more for them.

How did it feel to be selected as the Goodwill Ambassador and now a celebrity partner with United Nations WFP? What are some of your responsibilities? It is indeed an honor to be the voice of millions who suffer the lack of the simplest Human Rights. But what is most important to me is to help them and let the world hear their silent screams. I want the world to participate. Children have had their childhood taken from them and women don’t have enough food for their families in the camps. What I care about are the 4 million people who spend winter nights in the camps. Yezidi women were kidnapped and sold by ISIS. I want the world to act and save them. That’s my goal.

Are you ever made to report stories you would otherwise not give a second thought to? Yes, especially now with MBC. The MBC prime-time news bulletin is so different and we have softer, more popular stories. The team surprises me every day. I love them!

What has been your biggest challenge so far? Representing my country within the Arab and international media as an Iraqi; being away from the divisions and differences. I represent Iraqi Muslims, Christians, Kurds etc. To bring Iraqis together in love and unity is a challenge because politicians are now trying to use sectarian divisions to win elections. Unfortunately, they sabotaged the Iraqi mentality, and my role is to do the opposite.

How do you stay motivated through difficult times? Through my connection to my creator and believing that God

encourage teenagers not to repeat the mistakes that previous generations have made. It´s our role as media personalities to encourage teenagers to create a better future for the region. I want them to watch the news to get sufficient information to do that. They are the hope of our future.

What are your plans for the future? I have worked hard to build my name, but my name means nothing without a message. Being known is a blessing. I want to use my name to serve the community. I can be the voice of the voiceless; I can help as much as I can to support people in need.

Tell us about some of your hobbies and how you spend your free time. I love life! I love sports, dancing, singing and reading. I love self-development and self-improvement books. I´m also very active on my social media channels. It keeps me connected to my followers, they know a lot about my life. I also use the channels to spread the right messages to help others.

What advice would you give to other budding presenters?

is with me. God is the source of my strength and power. Also my mother makes me happy and stronger; I adore her and my family.

Tell us of any unforgettable experiences you had during your live interviews? The unforgettable interview is with the speaker of the house in Iraq. He became angry in a funny way. Millions of people watched the interview on YouTube.

Do you feel there is too much sensationalism in the media? Yes. The media should be careful how it deals with the stories. We have to pay more attention to the humanitarian cases that we have. We should play a positive role in bringing more aid and help to those people who are in need.

Since the news business is so fast-paced, what makes a long-lasting story? Unforgettable stories that we have in the media are usually stories that are told in an honest way, talking about the issues we have in our region. The most real and honest the story, the more it stays on our mind.

What are the most important characteristics a successful television personality must possess? First, of course, is talent. Some things cannot be acquired from the environment, like personality. It comes from God, you can’t play with that. However, when you have the talent without working from the inside, then you can’t be an influencer in the media. So, it is very important to have talent. Also, you must work on yourself; dedicate yourself to hard work, be persistent, continue learning by reading and working on the mind. All these things together can make a successful media personality.

Why should teenagers watch and, more importantly, care about the news? I want teenagers to be educated. I want them to know what is going on here in the Middle East because it is important to 070

APRIL 2017

Do not act too much, just be yourself. If you have the talent, let the talent speak and work on yourself. If your intention is to be famous, then you’ll get nowhere. If your intention is to be an influencer to make a difference in the world, use your talent.

Your message for us at CP magazine: Thank you so much. I have lots of followers from Kuwait, they message me every day. I love you guys in Kuwait, thank you so much for the interview. I wish you all the very best.

WRONGS moviewrongs.com by: JIM WEST

I

t is the year 2029 and we get to see that our favourite mutant with an attitude, Wolverine, is not doing so great. Due to a virus that targets mutants, his healing ability is slowly fading away and his adamantium skeleton is poisoning his body. Wolverine is driving a limousine, trying to save up money for medications for the now senile Xavier, and a boat they want to buy to sail off into the sunset. Hugh Jackman does a fantastic job in his last portrayal of Wolverine and overall the tone and pacing of this film is just about as perfect as it can get. Yet there is one issue I have with this film - Donald Pierce. Here come the spoilers! Donald Pierce is a hired gun of the research corporation that created the girl and other mutants utilizing DNA from other mutants thought to be long gone. Donald Pierce confronts Wolverine in his own limousine and you would think Pierce would be somewhat more menacing or have at least demonstrated super strength and fast reflexes to challenge Wolverine. Yet the film doesn’t showcase any special abilities of Pierce. In fact, Pierce is often seen backing away and, in the final scene, running away from Wolverine. So why would he even confront him earlier in the film if he honestly had no real advantage power-wise against Wolverine? The trailer showcases his character quite a bit, and perhaps it was to mask the real big baddie of a genetically cloned young Wolverine that proves to be a real mincing threat to our beloved aging hero. Donald Pierce’s character and the Reavers (cybernetically072

APRIL 2017

enhanced soldiers) all seem to be no real threat beyond their guns. So how to take what is truly a very good solid film (perhaps the best Wolverine film we will ever see Hugh Jackman in) and make it even better? Re-write Donald Pierce as the character he was in the comics. Give him superhuman strength and fast reflexes and let him be a real threat to Wolverine. In the casino scene when they give Xavier his shot to stop the seizure which froze everyone in place, Donald Pierce should rush into the casino to confront Wolverine in the hallway and let the fight continue out into the casino floor. This would have made for some spectacular hand to hand sequences to really heighten the film’s action. Then Wolverine could slice off his arm and Pierce can play second fiddle to the young cloned Wolverine in order to avoid the Spiderman 3 debacle I often refer to (too many villains versus the single hero). Hugh Jackman has played Wolverine for seventeen years and nine films and this swan song for Jackman is really a great way to send off a character we have loved for a long time. I think the studios are recognizing, with the success of the Rated R super hero film, Deadpool, that giving Wolverine no leash of a PG13 rating really allows them to serve up some great fight scenes and let those claws go berserk! I thoroughly enjoyed this film and beyond the one issue of Donald Pierce I enjoyed it. I do hope Hollywood takes notes from Deadpool and now Logan’s success and translates it into better superhero films. Thanks for reading Writing Movie ‘WRONGS’.

With London emptied of its men now fighting at the Front, Catrin Cole (Gemma Arterton) is hired by the British Ministry of Information as a “slop” scriptwriter charged with bringing “a woman’s touch” to moraleboosting propaganda films. Her natural flair quickly gets her noticed by dashing movie producer Buckley (Sam Claflin) whose path would never have crossed hers in peacetime. As bombs are dropping all around them, Catrin, Buckley and a colorful crew work furiously to make a film that will warm the hearts of the nation. Although Catrin’s artist husband looks down on her job, she quickly discovers there is as much camaraderie, laughter and passion behind the camera as there is onscreen. THE FIVE PEOPLE YOU MEET IN HEAVEN

W

e all have those comfort books that we re-read no matter how many times we have read them before. Most of us have a list of favourite books that we go through at least once a year or every holiday season. I have hundreds of these books, one of which is by one of my all-time favourite authors, Mitch Albom; and I guarantee this will be one of your favourite books of all time too. Mitch Albom has a way of explaining simple ideas in depth to allow readers a better understanding of the subject. This, in my opinion, is a plus in any book you start reading. He wrote well known titles such as Tuesdays with Morrie (1997), For One More Day (2006), the First Phone Call from Heaven (2013) and many more. Mitch Alhom is an American author, journalist, screenwriter, dramatist, radio, television broadcaster and musician. His books have sold 35 million copies worldwide. I am a strong believer that everything we do, or do not do, is cosmically related to our existence; our life, our death. If you have a plan and suddenly it gets cancelled or you changed your mind, believe it or not, it indirectly has an effect on another person who is living in, say, Alaska. The natural flow of the universe shouldn't be resisted and should be respected.

The Five People You Meet in Heaven (2003) tells a story of an old war veteran who passed tragically in an accident. Once in heaven, heaven was not what he expected. He met five people who explained his earth life to him; people he loves, people he never met before, and how each of them changed his life. This book is a life changing book. It will give you a different perspective over of this simple idea of heaven and life after death. And it is, in its way, a masterpiece.

ONE DAY WE'LL ALL BE DEAD AND NONE OF THIS WILL MATTER by Scaachi Koul

In One Day We'll All Be Dead and None of This Will Matter, Scaachi deploys her razor-sharp humour to share her fears, outrages and mortifying experiences as an outsider growing up in Canada. Her subjects range from shaving her knuckles in grade school, to a shopping trip gone horribly awry, to dealing with internet trolls, to feeling out of place at an Indian wedding (as an Indian woman), to parsing the trajectory of fears and anxieties that pressed upon her immigrant parents and bled down a generation. Alongside these personal stories are pointed observations about life as a woman of colour, where every aspect of her appearance is open for critique, derision or outright scorn. Where strict gender rules bind in both Western and Indian cultures, forcing her to confront questions about gender dynamics, racial tensions, ethnic stereotypes and her father's creeping mortality all as she tries to find her feet in the world.

BLEAKER HOUSE: CHASING MY NOVEL TO THE END OF THE WORLD by Clinton Kelly

Twenty-seven-year-old Nell Stevens was determined to write a novel, but somehow life kept getting in the way. Then came an irresistible opportunity: she won a fellowship to spend three months, all expenses paid, anywhere in the world to research and write a book. Did she choose a glittering metropolis, a romantic village, an exotic paradise? Um, no. Nell chose Bleaker Island, a snowy, windswept pile of rock off the Falklands. There, in a guesthouse where she would be the only guest, she imagined she could finally rid herself of distractions and write her 2,500 words a day. In three months, surely she'd have a novel, right?

WORTH IT: YOUR LIFE, YOUR MONEY, YOUR TERMS by Amanda Steinberg

From the founder and superstar CEO of DailyWorth.com the goto financial site for women with more than one million subscribers comes a fresh book that redefines the relationship between women, self-worth, and money. Worth It shows women how to view money as a source of personal power and freedom—and live life on their terms.

BLACK EDGE: INSIDE INFORMATION, DIRTY MONEY, AND THE QUEST TO BRING DOWN THE MOST WANTED MAN ON WALL STREET by Sheelah Kolhatkar

Steven A. Cohen changed Wall Street. He and his fellow pioneers of the hedge fund industry didn't lay railroads, build factories, or invent new technologies. Rather, they made their billions through speculation, by placing bets in the market that turned out to be right more often than wrong and for this, they gained not only extreme personal wealth but formidable influence throughout society. Hedge funds now oversee more than $3 trillion in assets, and the competition between them is so fierce that traders will do whatever they can to get an edge. Cohen was one of the industry's biggest success stories, the person everyone else in the business wanted to be. Born into a middle-class family on Long Island, he longed from an early age to be a star on Wall Street. He mastered poker in high school, went off to Wharton, and in 1992 launched the hedge fund SAC Capital, which he built into a $15 billion empire, almost entirely on the basis of his wizardlike stock trading. He cultivated an air of mystery, reclusiveness, and excess, building a 35,000-square-foot mansion in Greenwich, Connecticut, flying to work by helicopter, and amassing one of the largest private art collections in the world. On Wall Street, Cohen was revered as a genius: one of the greatest traders who ever lived.

THE TEA GIRL OF HUMMINGBIRD LANE

THE BEST WE COULD DO

by Lisa See

by Thi Bui

Li-yan and her family align their lives around the seasons and the farming of tea. There is ritual and routine, and it has been ever thus for generations. Then one day a jeep appears at the village gate the first automobile any of them have seen and a stranger arrives. In this remote Yunnan village, the stranger finds the rare tea he has been seeking and a reticent Akha people. In her biggest seller, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, See introduced the Yao people to her readers. Here she shares the customs of another Chinese ethnic minority, the Akha, whose world will soon change. Li-yan, one of the few educated girls on her mountain, translates for the stranger and is among the first to reject the rules that have shaped her existence. When she has a baby outside of wedlock, rather than stand by tradition, she wraps her daughter in a blanket, with a tea cake hidden in her swaddling, and abandons her in the nearest city.

This beautifully illustrated and emotional story is an evocative memoir about the search for a better future and a longing for the past. Exploring the anguish of immigration and the lasting effects that displacement has on a child and her family, Bui documents the story of her family’s daring escape after the fall of South Vietnam in the 1970s, and the difficulties they faced building new lives for themselves. At the heart of Bui’s story is a universal struggle: While adjusting to life as a first-time mother, she ultimately discovers what it means to be a parent the endless sacrifices, the unnoticed gestures, and the depths of unspoken love. Despite how impossible it seems to take on the simultaneous roles of both parent and child, Bui pushes through. With haunting, poetic writing and breathtaking art, she examines the strength of family, the importance of identity, and the meaning of home.

Belkin WeMo Switch Alexa’s turning up in all kinds of kit these days but you can’t retrofit it to absolutely anything you want. Sorry. You can, however, just stick a Belkin WeMo Switch between the wall and the plug of whatever it is you want to add Alexa Skills to effectively it’ll do the same job. The Switch is connected to the internet and usually requires an iOS or Android app to control, but with the WeMo Skill installed on your Echo you can turn it on or off using your voice. AL HASSAN alhassanbrothers

April is a busy month for the Al Hassan Brothers. With a live concert and the launch of their debut album, Mi Luna, there’s plenty to be excited about. Here at CP Magazine, we were equally excited when the band agreed to an exclusive interview. Taking time out from their busy schedule, the band talked to us about how they got together, the making of their debut album, and what’s next for these talented musicians with an ‘open door’ attitude to genre.

BROTHERS

083

Hi. Please introduce the band to our readers: Hi. We are Al Hassan Brothers, a Kuwaiti music band. Ali - lead singer Mahmoud - lead guitarist Haitha - lead guitarist and vocalist Hassan - rhythmic guitar and backing vocals.

Can you tell us about the formation of Al Hassan Brothers? Al Hassan Brothers formally formed in 2015 at the Philippine Embassy. That’s when we got the name of the group but we have played together since we learned to pick up the guitar about 16 years ago.

How did you get to the band name ‘Al Hassan Brothers’ and what does it mean to you? We were playing in public places just for fun. We played on beaches when the weather was fine and people came and sat with us, and we got invitations to play in shows. On one occasion we played at the Radisson Blu annual party for the Viking Club members and a journalist who was there (Ricky Laxa) asked us to do a charity show inside the Philippine Embassy. He told us that his boss, Dina Al Mallak (the founder of CEE Kuwait), saw an old video of the group playing live and asked him to get in touch with us. When we played he wanted to introduce us to the audience but all he knew about us was our individual names and that we are two pairs of brothers (Ali & Haitham) and their cousins (Mahmoud & Hassan). We didn't have a name for our group so without asking us he immediately introduced us as Al Hassan Brothers. We liked it!

music explorations with different styles. You could say it's 45% Spanish Flamenco, 40% English rock and 15% Arabic. We are looking forward to more languages and music inspirations in the future.

What bands have influenced you over the years and why? As Al Hassan Brothers we think the Gipsy Kings, Paco de Lucia, Camaron de la Isla, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and of course many more. We have four members and each one of us has a different taste so we try to take full advantage of our deference in music tastes.

What sets you apart from any other band out there right now? I think what sets any other musician apart from others is to be himself, to make his music from the heart and to express his influences with a great joy. That's why you might love two opposite kinds of arts at the same time.

How would you describe your music genre? We would say it is international folk music. Our music is difficult to put in a certain genre and we like it this way. It’s very nice to have an open door way to write music; we didn't think about genre when we wrote it.

Tell us about your first album ‘Mi Luna’ launching this month. Mi Luna is an album that talks about nature, peace of mind, spiritual experiences and the thing that gives value to everything in life. That thing, of course, is love.

What can you tell us about the recording process for ‘Mi Luna’?

To those not familiar with your music, how would you It was fun. We had a great time recording and we are so lucky to have an amazing describe your sound? sound engineer, Sajid Masood (Sarj), who is already a musician and shared his Since we started, the sound of the group has had a variety of influences and passion with us. 084

APRIL 2017

We are also very excited and happy to work with some great musicians - the bassist Soud Al Saad, percussionist Moaed & Ghanim, electric guitarist Hashem Al Nasser and guitarist Abdulrahman Buhamud, who made the recording from Bahrain and sent it to us. Also Baerbal Ehlert the violinist who made it from The Netherlands. As you can see, we worked with many musicians to make this album the way it should be and we are so grateful to all of them, and of course to Nawaf Al Gheraibah, our producer, who worked hard to manage the project until the end.

What song means the most to you from the album and why? ‘YoteQuiero’ because it takes me to a pure loving state. On lots of occasions when we perform it, I feel like I'm filled with light because the lyrics are about true love; the love that can never die; proof of the eternity of the soul that connects people. Even if some are dead and some are living the relationship continues with more love.

What songs are you really enjoying playing live from your album at the moment? Most of them! Maybe ‘Fi Izdihar’ a little more than the others because it has power, depth and interesting melodies.

How was your experience working with Nawaf Gharibeh and AJNA Records? It’s like our second home! Nawaf is a wonderful person and his presence in the music industry is really great - honest any good. What he gets in this world he deserves and I hope he gets more. He helps young musicians and gets them involved in big projects. He is a great source of inspiration to all of us and we are blessed to work with him and so lucky to be in AJNA Records.

What was the hardest part about putting the album together for you guys and why? The hardest part was the timing. It’s always harder for a group than an individual artist. Each one of us has his own life, job and responsibilities. Managing time to practice and to record wasn't easy.

What song of yours are you most connected to and why? ‘Fi Izdihar’ because it kind of reminds me of those days when I used to play old Spanish songs to my grandfather. We had a great time. Actually, the lyrics in ‘Fi Izdihar’ tell the story of that experience, because both me and my grandfather had the same interest. Through that comes the expression of joy and pain. It heals us; it’s like a powerful daily meditation. Of course, we wrote the lyrics in a way that anybody can relate to and it does have a mystical meaning.

Can you tell your fans something they don’t know about you? We love pizza!

When not making music what do you like to do? Meditation, reading, writing, drawing, sport.

What’s next for you? We have a big concert planned by our record company ‘AJNA Records’ for the end of April. After that were going to take a break, do some sport and spend valuable time with family and friends. Of course, we’ll make a regular routine to practice and write music with each other.

Your message for us at CP magazine: Thank you very much for having us. We appreciate the way you give space to the artists to talk about their art which is a very good way to spread the passion and keep the wheels of inspiration spinning. www.cpmagazine.net

THE TEN GOLDEN RULES FOR ENJOYING THE SUN In-depth UV protection all year long: that's how Eucerin®, the dermo-cosmetics sun protection expert, lays the foundation for enjoying the sun. They are tailor-made for sensitive skin and its individual needs. The following GOLDEN RULES let you know what is important before and during your time in the sun, especially for facial skin.

ENJOY THE SUN: The sun’s rays activate and stimulate a lot of the body’s important mechanisms. UV radiation causes the body to create vitamin D, which regulates the calcium level, promotes bone growth, strengthens the immune system and supports the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. But: We only need a small dose of sunlight to receive these positive effects from the sun for our body´s mechanisms.

LOVE IT: Find a sun protection product that you really like to use. The

RESPECT THE RISKS: The natural protective mechanisms against UV rays only work for a very short time in the sun. Without protection you risk sunburn. Remember: cloud cover and even window glass only protect us from part of the sun’s radiation.

BEST TIME: The UV protection works instantly after applying Eucerin® Sun Protection products – there is no waiting time required. All of them can be combined with the other Eucerin® products – also under foundation. Start your day by cleansing your skin as a first step – from a scientific point of view you can apply the sunscreen before or after your regular day care product. Either way the sunscreen will protect your skin effectively.

DAILY USE: Face and décolleté are the most UV exposed skin areas. To protect them with a daily sunscreen routine is a worthwhile investment in your future and keeping your skin healthy and beautiful. CHOOSE HIGHER SPF: Nowadays, day care creams offer SPF 15 or higher. However, most dermatologists recommend to use a high SPF 30 or even SPF 50+ for everyday use, especially if your skin is sensitive to the sun. That’s why it’s a good idea to integrate a high SPF sunscreen in your daily basis skin care regimen in addition to your regular day care product. If your skin is sensitive to the sun or you have a lighter skin tone, always use a SPF 50+ product on your face. USE FULL PROTECTION PRODUCTS: The sun protection factor (SPF) number only indicates how much protection the product offers from UVB radiation, which causes sunburn. To protect your skin from longterm skin damage, sunscreen products also must provide a shield against UVA radiation. Since 2006, Europe has followed the criteria laid down by Cosmetics Europe, formerly known as COLIPA (the industry's umbrella organization) for the minimum efficacy of sunscreen products against UVB and UVA radiation. According to this standard, the UVA protection factor must equal about a third of the sun protection factor. 086

APRIL 2017

special Eucerin® Sun Face line won’t leave your skin feeling greasy or sticky and combines well with other face care and makeup products. The lightweight formulas are easy to apply, fast absorbing and leave the skin with a matt finish. The products are available in different textures and all formulas contain active ingredients according to your skin’s individual needs.

PAY ATTENTION: One of the most common mistakes is to overlook parts of your body that should be protected. Eucerin® recommends as part of a daily routine for your face not to forget your ears, scalp, neck and the décolleté. Those are precisely the areas that are most exposed to sunlight, as are your hands. TAKE CARE: Sun exposure is not permitted after microdermabrasion and laser treatments. Other situations can increase sensitivity to the sun’s rays as well, like taking the birth control pill, during pregnancy or during menopause. If you are taking medications, check the instructions to see if they increase photosensitivity. Generally women with very fair skin types, red or light blonde hair and many freckles are most susceptible to the risk of sun damage.

BE GENEROUS: The amount of the sunscreen you apply is crucial for the actual protection your skin gets. Eucerin® recommends the following rules for application: Adults need one line comprising the length from the tip of the middle finger to the base of the hand for the face. Another one for the décolleté and one for ears and neck. A sun hat or cap and sunglasses are a plus as well.

WEDDING SPECIAL

When little girls dream about their weddings, they imagine a beautiful princess dress, flawless hair and make-up and the perfect venue taken right from a fairy tale. As time passes, their dream wedding becomes a reality and unexpected struggles and doubts suddenly appear in the form of these questions: Which shape of dress fits me best? Which shade of white is more flattering for me? Shall I have my hair up or down? Natural make-up or strong make-up? These doubts can make any bride very nervous and insecure. Fortunately, image consultants like ourselves can make this process seem very easy with the right set of analysis and tips. We make any bride look and feel fantastic on her wedding day! So let’s go straight into business with our wedding special client, Sandy. Sandy, please introduce yourself to our readers: Hi guys, my name is Sandy and I am 24 years old. I was born and raised in Dubai and I currently work at a production house. I consider myself to be quite lucky in my personal and professional life.

What made you feel you needed the help of Carla & Marie for a bridal makeover and what do you expect from this experience? I always dreamed of getting married in a white dress, but somehow I don't know where to start. There are too many choices and I don't really know what looks good on me. I really feel I need the help of professionals, and having followed their work closely I get the feeling these two girls know a thing or two about styling brides. 088

APRIL 2017

Now, let the makeover begin! BRIDAL COLOUR ANALYSIS The power of colour is extraordinary and this also applies to wedding dresses, even if we think there is not much of that on a white wedding dress. Let's bear in mind that the correct shade of white for a wedding dress is as important as having the right shape of dress. You are about to discover our client Sandy's optimal shade of white. In order to find out our client’s best dress colour we start by draping Sandy with different shades of white, off-white and beige fabrics. The result of the analysis shows that our client really brightens up with pure white fabrics, meaning that she has a cool skin undertone and this shade really flatters her complexion. On the other hand, the off-white and beige fabrics seem to age her and make her skin look yellow.

SILVER OR GOLD? The silver vs. gold analysis will help us determine whether Sandy looks better with white gold or yellow gold. For a bride, this analysis is very important as it guides us towards our optimal metal for Sandy. This applies not only to jewellery but also any embroidery on her wedding dress. Sandy’s result is a clear silver, so we will take a note of this information when we search for her accessories and dress.

BODY SHAPE ANALYSIS Understanding our bride's body shape is a key element when it comes to selecting her perfect wedding dress. Our aim with this analysis is to highlight our client's best assets and to camouflage those parts that she feels less confident about. Sandy has a gorgeous hourglass figure, which means her hips and shoulders are in line and she has a smaller waist. This is one of the most balanced body figures of the 5 body shape types. Let’s look at Sandy’s body shape analysis in more detail: Waist: Our focus with Sandy’s body will be on her waist. By having a fitted top that ends at her waist and by adding a thin belt, we accentuate this body part. We also added an A-line skirt, which creates a balanced figure in line with her shoulders. Neckline: When it comes to the neckline, Sandy needs to have a v-neckline in order to elongate her upper body and give the illusion of space. This neckline also has a wonderful slimming effect. For all ladies with a large bust, a V-neckline is a must! Sleeves: The perfect length for Sandy’s sleeves is 3/4, as this sleeve length ends at the smallest part of her arms, therefore adding another slimming illusion to her body.

HAIR AND MAKEUP

HAIR STYLING Moving on to the beauty part of the makeover, here comes the hair. Hair is a very important component for any bride’s big day and Sandy is no different. We decided to keep Sandy’s hair young, fresh and natural. Since she has a very long hair, an up-do with natural waves will do the trick. And why not add a side braid to her hair up-do to add some fun and youth to her look? What do you think about the final result? We must admit we couldn't have done it without the magic hands of the great professionals at Maison de Joelle. Thumbs up to all of them!

BRIDAL MAKE-UP

090

APRIL 2017

Now, the big question is what type of make-up is best for weddings, natural make-up or full-on make-up? The thing is, there is no right or wrong answer to this question; it all depends on the person and her personality. One must begin by searching what suits her best and what she feels comfortable in. In the case of Sandy, she normally wears minimal make-up so adding strong make-up to her bridal look would not have been a good choice. So natural make-up it is for Sandy! Following the colour analysis we performed on her earlier, we know she is cool. This means she looks great with pink shades, so her makeup is kept fresh and pinkish, with a dramatic black liner to define her beautiful almond shape eyes. Now we can say she is almost ready!

THE DRESS We are now talking business with ‘The Dress’. How important is the dress to a bride? Well very much so! Therefore we are taking our job very seriously when it comes to choosing Sandy’s perfect dress. Following the results of the colour and body shape analysis, it all indicates that our client needs a pure white dress, V-neck line, A line skirt cut and 3/4 length sleeves. And voila! We have just found the perfect dress ticking all those boxes plus some more! The silver embroidery on the top part of her dress just brings the perfect level of sparkle needed for the big day. Congrats Sandy, you look INCREDIBLE!

SANDY’S FEEDBACK: I am speechless. I couldn't have imagined a more perfect dress, hair and make-up. I actually feel so good about myself and so pretty as well. I have learned so much about colours and styles that suit me. Thank you so much Carla and Marie, you are awesome! Also, a big thank you to 'Maison de Joelle’, they have treated me like a princess and did a fantastic job. I will remember this experience for the rest of my life!

UN-Habitat & Biohydro-Kuwait “Two-month campaign on Sustainable growth”

Chronomaster Collection: Chronomaster El Primero Range Rover Velar Special Edition

The iconic Rado Ceramica

Watchmaker adds three new pieces to redesigned collection

Swiss watchmaker Rado made waves last year with the relaunch of its iconic Rado Ceramica collection. Teaming up with renowned industrial designer Konstantin Grcic, the brand updated its well-known, starkly geometric timepiece with a contemporary new look for the current zeitgeist. Now three new additions to the Ceramica family have arrived and are ready to make a bold impact on the wrist. With strong lines and gently curved silhouettes, these three new Ceramicas are ideal for fans of minimalism. Following the success of the two matt Ceramicas that were unveiled last year, another model in matt black high-tech ceramic has been added to the collection. For a softer look that is no less visually compelling, two models in grey high-tech ceramic are also available. The polished grey version features the same Super-LumiNova® indexes as its matt black counterpart, while the dial of the matt grey version boasts a vertically brushed finished and concave dots that function as indexes. This collection marks the first time that automatic movements have been used in the Ceramica family. Greyscale cool As the name indicates, the Ceramica is made from high-tech ceramic, a material favoured by luxury watchmakers for its incredible marriage of lightness and scratch resistance. The aesthetic properties of high-tech ceramic are no less impressive: An astonishing range of colours and finishes can be crafted from this futuristic material, which was first used in themedical and aerospace industries before Rado pioneered its use in watchmaking. High-tech ceramic is also hypoallergenic and adapts readily to the wearer’s body temperature, making it gentle and comfortable against the skin. Seven high-tech ceramic colours – black, white, plasma, grey, brown, green and blue – are now featured in Rado's collections. The launch of the grey Ceramica marks the first time that this high-tech ceramic colour has been featured in the Ceramica family. Grey high-tech ceramic has debuted in the Ceramica collection with two finishes: a subtle, earthy sandblasted matt and a perfect high-gloss polish, a testament to the versatility of this remarkable material.

A|X Women’s SS17 The A|X Women’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection has a changeable, metropolitan personality. The emphasis is on functional looks that mix activewear with a whole array of sophisticated references. Perfecto jackets are layered on dresses and tops. Denim is the protagonist fabric for jackets, light shirts and jeans with skinny to flare fit and a rich variety of patterns and washes. Stripes provide movement: wide, narrow, vertical, horizontal on dresses and jumpers. Japanese echoes characterise oversize tops. Prints feature camouflage. To complete the collection, a selection of classic pieces in an elegant and light colour palette expressed in natural materials like linen, and cotton. The iconic piece is the trench coat, revisited in urban proportions or used as inspiration for the new chinos. A|X MEN’S SS17 The A|X Spring/Summer 2017 collection is an irreverent hybrid of locations and inspirations. It mixes rebellious punk and activewear, sports and street style and Japan. The spirit is fast and metropolitan. The total black of the leather Perfecto jacket and slim trousers alternates with oversize total white. Vibrant colours mix in items that share the same spirit of urban camouflage. Tank tops and track pants suggest performance. Deconstructed blazers and soft trousers follow natural cuts. Nylon windbreakers and lightweight linen ensure comfort in warmer weather. Plain and distressed finish denim is also used. Bombers and hooded jackets feature nautical and tennis inspired details.

Kuwait announced today the launch of ‘Hasadd’, a two- month awareness campaign conceived to elevate sustainable urban agricultural practices amongst Kuwait’s residents, at the launch of the “Organic Hydroponics and Sustainability” seminar at Al Shaheed Park. Eng. Hamad Al-Kulaib, Founder and CEO of Biohydro Kuwait said, “Hasadd Awareness Campaign, in collaboration with UN-Habitat, aims to engage local residents in conversations about sustainable practices and shed light on Mother Earth's plea on her special day while raising knowledge about the country’s newly implemented environmental laws. Hasadd’s Organic Hydroponics and Sustainability- Truth or Fiction? discussions started with “bioponics” patent holder Mr. William Texier introducing the concept of “organic hydroponics” and the importance of closed living food cycles for food production. Al-Kulaib will subsequently raise questions regarding current notions of sustainability in Kuwait’s highly irradiated and arid climate that will be followed by a discussion session attended by decision makers in governmental scientific institutions and their respective NGO arms. The two-month campaign is split into two phases, with the first phase focusing on awareness and capacity building among the youths by involving them in lectures and debates with international environmentalists, while the second phase emphasizes the technical application of hydroponics and Hasadd’s elements of “You Plant, You Grow, You Protect and You Enjoy”. The workshops aim to simplify sustainable growing methods for members of society especially those with special needs, equipping them with 6 months’ worth of growing tools, in order to empower them to become proud contributors of the sustainable community. Dalal Al-Radhi, UN-Habitat’s Partnership and Advocacy Associate said, Habitat finds this initiative a form of cultivations for youths in teaching them the foundations of home growing as part of Habitat’s New Urban Agenda in promoting promoting green cities and environmental sustainability. The highlight of the campaign will be a celebration of Mother Nature on ‘International Mother Earth Day’ with programs designed to boost Kuwait’s contribution towards nature conservations on a global scale, in partnership with Conservation International (CI).

At the occasion of the 2017 Geneva International Motor Show, Zenith and Land Rover are celebrating their creative relationship by presenting a new Chronomaster El Primero Range Rover Velar Special Edition. The timepiece features a new elegant brushed grey dial with copper-toned details, and a new black rubber strap coated with black-toned perforated calfskin, inspired by ideas from both brands’ product design and engineering departments. A watch to embrace the heritage and strong credentials of two legends. In 1969, Zenith unveiled its fabled El Primero chronograph. That same year, British car manufacturer Land Rover introduced the prototype of the very first luxury off-road vehicle: the iconic Range Rover, which hit the markets in 1970. Fired by the same pioneering spirit and the same ability to explore new horizons, these two original creations achieved legendary status. In 2017, Zenith and Land Rover are continuing to celebrate the creative relationship. Featuring a ceramised aluminum case of 42 mm and beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour, the new Chronomaster El Primero Range Rover Velar Special Edition introduces an appealing brushed grey dial with copper-toned details. Whether on the wrist of an intrepid explorer or an elegant gentleman, it also exudes an inimitably chic aura, enhanced by a new black rubber strap coated with black-toned perforated calfskin. This leather is the same high quality hide used on Range Rovers and is secured by a triple folding clasp in DLC-treated titanium.

For Longines, the Conquest V.H.P. signals a return to a technology that it has pioneered and perfected over the years, especially in relation to its timekeeping activities. The global launch of the new Conquest V.H.P. (Very High Precision) was held at Neuchâtel Observatory, a setting as spectacular as the timepiece itself. It was also at this iconic venue that the first quartz clock by Longines set a series of precision records back in 1954. Some 100 journalists and influencers from around the world attended the unveiling of this collection that celebrates precision and perfection. In this intimate and informal setting, Mr Walter von Känel, President of Longines, and Mr Juan-Carlos Capelli, Vice-President of Longines and International Marketing Director, accompanied guests on a fascinating journey through the history of Longines and its close relationship with quartz technology, from the very early days right through to the 2017 launch of the new Conquest V.H.P. The global launch was also an opportunity to free guests, albeit briefly, from the confines of the hyperconnected world. The fact that smartphones were not permitted inside the Observatory meant that everyone was able to immerse themselves fully in the experience. A temporary museum erected under the Observatory’s glass dome retold the Longines story and the many technical and technological innovations it has achieved during its history. Following a few explanatory words by the hosts, guests were led to a second room, a veritable cabinet of curiosities, to finally feast their eyes on the Conquest V.H.P. Outside the Observatory, a special interactive space was created where guests were able to take a much closer look at and handle the timepiece, as well as chat to Longines management. All in all, a fitting end to this very special presentation.

APRIL 2017

Since 2014, two collections have been born from the partnership between Hublot, Italia Independent and Lapo Elkann. Although both of the previous collections were based on the legendary Big Bang Unico model, this time the magic of this wildly creative team was unleashed on the Classic Fusion model. Its name seems to have predestined it for this new special edition: there has never been such a fine example of the fusion of the 'classic' and innovation. A task that was made-to-measure (no pun intended) for Lapo Elkann— frequently named "the most elegant man in the world". The “sartoria Rubinacci” was not chosen at random: since 1932, three generations of Rubinacci have been at the reins of this institution of good taste and masculine refinement: Gennaro, the founding grandfather, Mariano, the father who now manages the house from Naples and, of course Luca, master of the store in Milan, and one of the most photographed men on the planet thanks to his unique style. Between them they have dressed everybody from the Duke of Kent to singer Bryan Ferry, not to mention of course the Agnelli family, of which Lapo Elkann is the worthy successor. The House of Rubinacci holds the most beautiful collection of fabrics in its archives. It was here, in the more than 60,000 square metres of precious houndstooth, tweeds and other cloths that Hublot and Lapo Elkann found a collection of tartans—squared coloured wool weaves from the seventies— that they brought back to life by including them in the Classic Fusion as a chronograph. The dial and straps have therefore been made using these precious fabrics to offer this range of 45 mm timekeepers an end result that is the epitome of elegance. “La vera sprezzatura!”

SAGITTARIUS

(March 21 - April 19)

(July 23 - August 22)

(November 22 - December)

On April 5, the Mars/Pluto trine could help you achieve a longcherished goal. Sweet love and romance come your way with the April 10 Full Moon. If you're feeling a bit selfish, that's fine. It's part of your charm. Relax and do what comes naturally. There's no rush when Venus is retrograde, as it is now. The New Moon on April 26 may bring you a monetary windfall, or perhaps a desired acquisition becomes easier to get now. A financial decision that seems obvious to you may surprise others, but your instincts will outweigh any advice. However, be smart and not hasty.

Sidestep an argument on April 6 when the Leo Moon squares Mars and trines Saturn. Now that's self-control. The Full Moon on April 10 may remind you of how much people really like you. Friends, neighbors, or siblings could surprise you with a show of friendliness. It may not be flowers, but it could come in material form just as well as compliments. Look for career or work opportunities around the New Moon on April 26. Even if a major boost to your position doesn't happen instantly, you'll be conspicuous in all you do. You know your own mind. Be authoritative but not bossy.

The Moon/Jupiter trine on April 1 starts you off on a big-hearted, generous note. Dance and prance during the Full Moon on April 10. Social life should really sparkle and shine. Expect invitations or tickets to a big concert or show. You don't have to be the one to throw the party this time. The New Moon on April 26 highlights creature comforts and how healthy they can be. It may be hard at times to moderate what and how much you eat, but you should be able to reduce stress and enjoy a less hectic schedule. You'll still be busy, of course.

TAURUS

(April 20 - May 20)

(August 23 - September)

(December 22 - January 19)

The April 10 Full Moon pours power into improving your daily routine. Get better organized with no extra effort and clean up a lot of loose ends. You'll get plenty of help without needing to ask. Take full advantage and remember to show your gratitude. The Venus retrograde period ends on April 15. Look for more tender hearts and perhaps a random love token or sweet reconciliation. April 26 is a New Moon that lets you be a new you. Create a more beautiful world for yourself and know that you can make it last. Feel secure about everything that you truly love.

The April 10 Full Moon illuminates an obscure financial matter. It could be as small as an unexplained service charge. You could find out that you're not the only one in a situation that has an easy fix and that will probably correct itself without you doing anything. On April 19, give logic a rest and be more intuitive as the Sun conjoins Mercury. The New Moon on April 26 is a great time to examine more deeply a subject or matter that has strong emotional appeal.
