Something amazing happened on 31st July. Not only did England win their first major football trophy since 1966, but it was the women (not the men) who secured this magnificent victory. And that’s not all. As well as playing in front of a record European Championship crowd of 87,192 at Wembley Stadium, the TV audience of 17.5 million was also a UK record. As England progressed in the tournament, the momentum grew. More and more viewers tuned in to watch the Lionesses roar. Many were surprised by the talent on display, their skill and stamina both seemingly improved under head coach, Sarina Wiegman. Having defeated Northern Ireland 5-0 in their opening fixture, England’s women went on to beat Norway (8-0) and Austria (1-0) in their other group matches. Buoyed by the nation’s support, they then beat Spain in the quarterfinal (2-1 after extra time) before overpowering Sweden, one of the tournament favourites, 4-0 in the semi-final.

In the space of a few days, Beth Mead, Ellen White and Lauren Hemp became household names, up there with the likes of Harry Kane and Raheem Stirling. New supporters of the women’s game were impressed with the grit and determination on display as well as the discipline and respect shown by the players, things that are often lacking in the men’s game.

The Manchester City striker had suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury (one of the most serious injuries an athlete can sustain) in May 2021. Such an injury takes at least 12 months to recover from and Kelly was in a race against the clock to be fit in time for the European Championships. Her journey back from injury and subsequent tournament-winning goal have proved inspirational and ensured she will always be known as an England footballing legend.

There’s no doubt this was the start of something very special for women’s football, not just in the UK but the world over. 17.9 million viewers also watched the final in Germany, where they saw their team defeated 2-1. England took the lead after 62 minutes, courtesy of substitute Ella Toone. Germany then equalised 15 minutes later forcing the match into extra time. It was Chloe Kelly, also a secondhalf substitute, who scored the winning goal in the 110th minute and whose iconic celebration has empowered women all over the world.

Thanks to their historical win, the Lionesses have put women’s football well and truly on the map. Tickets for their next match, an international friendly against the United States on 7th October, sold out within 24 hours. There has also been a huge surge in ticket sales for the Women’s Super League. Season tickets for Chelsea have already sold out and Manchester City have reported a record number of season ticket sales. Of course, this will attract more broadcasting deals, bigger sponsorships and, ultimately, an even larger audience. It is also hoped (and expected) that more schools will allow girls to play football. In fact, the Lionesses have appealed to the Department for Education to change the rules after their inspirational Euros win. Currently, just 44% of secondary schools in the UK provide equal football lessons for both boys and girls. But it’s not just women’s football that will benefit from England’s splendid victory. Women’s sport as a whole is set to grow significantly with an increasing number of girls taking up their chosen sport and believing they can progress to international level, thanks largely to the Lionesses legacy. Something amazing happened on 31st July and it will change women’s sport forever.

12 AUGUST 2022 tifahtravels THE BIRTH OF NOBU

What is popular, delicious, and highly sought after? Nobu. You may have never dined at or slept in a Nobu location, but chances are you have heard of this luxe establishment. Founded in 1994 by Nobu Matsuhisa, Robert De Niro, and Meir Teper, and with operations spanning five continents, the Nobu brand thrives in many of the world’s capital cities as the ultimate destination lifestyle experience. The first Nobu restaurant opened in 1994 in New York, and the first hotel opened in Las Vegas in 2013.

“It was the first time I had experienced gold leaf on food,” De Niro said. In 1994, Nobu finally agreed to partner with De Niro and film producer Meir Teper to open the first-ever Nobu in New York’s Financial District. It gained instant popularity. While the food choices at Nobu and Matsuhisa are very similar, Nobu can seat more and has a very chic aesthetic.

THE BEGINNING What’s the story behind this global luxury brand that is built on service, image, and reputation?

14 AUGUST 2022

THE FRIENDSHIP How Matsuhisa, De Niro, Teper work together as a team is a question asked by many. Drawing on the strengths and talents of each member of the group, the trio has always split up the work to run the brand. Matsuhisa is, of course, the star chef, while De

Nobuyuki (“Nobu”) Matsuhisa never had the goal of building a world-renowned empire. As a child, he dreamed of becoming a sushi chef after his brother took him to a sushi restaurant in their home country of Japan. By the age of 18, Nobu was working as a chef at a family-run sushi restaurant in Tokyo. Later, a customer who frequented the restaurant asked him to open a sushi restaurant in Peru. Three years after Nobu took the opportunity in Peru, the partnership failed. In 1977, a friend asked if he would open a restaurant in Anchorage. Nobu said yes, but after a little over a month, the restaurant burned down. Shortly afterward, Nobu accepted a job at a small restaurant in Los Angeles. In 1987, with a loan from a friend, Nobu opened Matsuhisa in Beverly Hills. With Hollywood elites coming in and out of the restaurant, a high-profile celebrity was bound to recognize Nobu’s talent. Sure enough, in 1988, Robert De Niro dined at Matsuhisa, fell in love with the restaurant, and approached Nobu about opening a branch in New York City.

15www.cpmagazine.net

THE HOTEL A thriving restaurant wasn’t the limit for this trio. De Niro wanted to create a place where people would want to stay. Nobu Hotel was De Niro’s vision. Today there are 13 Nobu Hotels around the world in Barcelona, Chicago, Ibiza, Los Cabos, Malibu, Marbella, Manila, Miami Beach, Palo Alto, Warsaw, and two areas of London (Shoreditch and Portman Square). New Nobu Hotels are in development for Al Khobar, Atlanta, Atlantic City, Hamburg, Madrid, Marrakech, New Orleans, Riyadh, Rome, Toronto, San Sebastian, Santorini, Sao Paulo, and Tel Aviv, all with the same sleek aesthetic as the restaurants.

Niro specializes in promotions and Teper deals with necessary negotiations. Teper exclaimed, “You have to have friendship, love, and compromising, just like any other relationship. We have been together for 28 years now. It’s like a marriage. First, you love each other.” It’s beautiful how the three get along. During our exclusive interview with the founders, Nobu stated, “We have no secrets. We have opinions, and we talk.” Mer added, “De Niro is the most loyal friend you could have.”

THE NOBU MENTALITY

Although Nobu Matsuhisa didn’t intentionally set out to build a multi-million-dollar business, and though he was hit with several setbacks, he did the best he could with the cards he was dealt. Today, he heads a hotel and restaurant empire with 50 locations across five continents. The celebrity chef has even made movie cameos and has been shouted out in rap songs. The ultra-humble, incredibly smiley chef exclaimed, “Because people support [us], I would like to [give] support back to the cities. We don’t worry about the money; we want to make people happy. If we make people happy, the money will come after. The smile on customers; faces and their laughter is what we want. It’s a win, win, win.”

Other points that factor in the concentration of in-car VOC emissions are; car age (the newer your car the higher the concentration of VOCs it offset if it only really decreases after the three-year mark), mileage, relative humidity, types of interior materials, air exchange rate, fuel type, refueling process, moving conditions (parking or static status) and whatever air freshener you choose to use3. So just remember during this summer heat roll down your windows for a few minutes to avoid filling your lungs with all those nasty VOCs.

We have all experienced that strong whiff of chemical scent that hit us smack bang in the face as we perform that song and dance that we usually do as we settle ourselves into our car seats in this summer heat. Occasionally it crosses my mind at that very moment how many harmful chemicals are filling up my lungs. With the scolding rays of sun hit the surfaces of the leather seats and plastic dashboard pinging and reflecting every corner. That smell is actually volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are off-gassed from materials such as; hard plastics, elastomers, rubber, natural or synthetic leather, fabrics and fibres that are used to equip the passenger compartment1. The presence of some chemicals has been found to be five to ten folds higher in car interiors compared to homes and offices2. These compounds may impact your health as well as your driving ability. A survey in 2005 of 800 new car buyers by South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport found that 51.5% of new car buyers experienced at least one sensation of what it termed ‘sick car syndrome due to the odour of their new car’s interior3. These adverse effects encompass drowsiness, headaches and dizziness, eye irritation, respiratory problems, throat irritation, fatigue, nausea, skin irritation, and toxic, carcinogenic, and mutagenic effects4 Car manufacturers have been spurred on to come up with solutions to this issue. In 2014, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Inland transport committee endorsed a proposed action plan to create globally recognized interior air quality standards for cars (ECE/TRANS/WP.29/1143)5.

Some other tips to clear the air include changing your car's air filter every 19,000 to 24,000 km and that’s not even considering our dusty conditions which are over 90% of the year. Also, funnily enough, placing your car out in the sun with the windows is, a great way to get rid of that new car smell. Plus, putting a container of baking soda or charcoal and doing a wipe down with some white vinegar solution will help absorb those odours.

look at some DIY solutions to this nagging dilemma that has been churning in my overworked brain. Apparently, tinting or any type of filming has been proven to have the greatest potential for decreasing mobile air conditioning energy, higher fuel savings, and reduced emissions8. As directly exposed cabin surfaces are estimated to raise the cabin's temperature distribution by 30°C in comparison to surfaces that are shaded by 10°C9. This leads to hotter interiors such as the dashboard and rear board releasing more VOCs per unit time and area9. However logically speaking I don’t think these numbers apply to Kuwait’s climatic conditions because guys let's not forget we are the hottest place on earth and temperatures of 50oC and more are nothing strange for us. Therefore, roll down your windows for a few minutes to neutralize those “fumes”. To ensure that you maintain acceptable VOC concentrations, the interior temperature should be set to no higher than 35.6°C and that’s including natural ventilation in the car, while later on, you can hike it up at an appropriate time when the car is running10. Try not to place the air conditioning on full blast to combat the heat as it will only cause gas emissions that in turn also contribute to in-vehicle VOCs, it is a vicious cycle!

Lexus is offering a leather seat alternative called NuLuxe which is manufactured in a process that produces no VOCs and reduces carbon emissions by as much as 65 per cent6. Also, Volvo cars vehicles have the first full automotive cabin air filtration system to be certified asthma & allergy friendly® by Allergy Standards Ltd (ASL) and it is scientifically proven to reduce exposure to pollen allergens and keep the concentration of ions, ozone and VOCs remained extremely low inside car cabins7 So since I have relayed the problem, I need to do my research and Athari Abdulaziz Almutawa

LIPOSCULPTURE Liposuction, or rather liposculpture, is a minimally invasive way to remove excess fat and reshape the body. The minimum age is 12 years old, and this falls are not for the faint of heart! Just the half tour involves a physically moderate 60 minute hike. You will have an experienced tour guide and others offering assistance along the waterfalls guiding on how to place your hands (listen carefully to these instructions) to avoid injuries. They also rent water shoes for a small fee, and lifejacket and helmet are issued to you before starting the hike. Bug spray is highly recommended. Make sure your phones and cameras are water protected. Waterproof cases are sold there and other supplies.

My challenge for you who’s reading this is to push your boundaries and step outside your comfort zone and live more experiences. What is a boring ordinary life but working 9 to 5 and going home to eat and sleep to repeat the next day? Start planning your next trip to discover something new about yourself. Whether it be skydiving, scuba diving, wadi bashing, etc.; just get outside and get to the other side of your fears. That is where you start to really feel alive. What is the worst you could lose…your life? What is the greatest thing you can gain…your lived life. Be extraordinary!

What a refreshing way to let go of fear and just have fun. Will Smith said in a popular YouTube video that “The best things in life are on the other side of fear”. He is so right on that point. When was the last time you let go and stopped recording the concert on your phone and actually really focused on the performance? This is what the 27 Falls does to you. It makes you set aside your phone and just experience the moment. One that you will remember forever. For more information visit 27charcos.com.

Although the beaches at Dominican Republic are often the main draw for tourists, there is an experience to be had inside the lush jungles. Nestled in the mountains of the Cordillera Septentrional mountain range lies Dominican Republic’s most exhilarating attraction; going down 27 Waterfalls Damajagua! The Rio Damajagua is a river found in the northern side of the island, close to the city of Puerto Plata, and it forms twenty-seven natural waterfalls known as “charcos”. The word “charcos” is mistranslated. Charcos means pools, not waterfalls. There are in fact about 12 waterfalls and 27 pools at the 27 Charcos of Damajagua. On most days you can only do half of the 12 as weather and other factors may prohibit going up higher along the trail.

MARQUES is a luxury brand based between Lisbon and Dubai. Founded in 2020, the label focus on highend fashion with a particular aesthetic blending subtle design with noble materials through exquisite craftsmanship. MARQUES does not abide by the traditional fashion calendar, releasing new designs throughout the year with a particular focus on bespoke creations.

Our Lifestyle Editor, José Berrocoso, dives into The Universe of Marques. www.marques.world

Over the years these experiences added up to the attendance of Men's Fashion Week in Milan and Paris - ultimately leading to Marques' decision to establish his namesake label. Currently the brand is expanding into new fields such as upcycling with unique pieces, a collection of unisex fragrances, and leather goods. Future plans for the label include its headquarters in Lisbon and a creative atelier in Dubai, locations where patrons can experience the MARQUES lifestyle and aesthetic to its full extent.

THE UNIVERSE OF MARQUES

22 AUGUST 2022 TheMarquesOfficial

John AC Marques is the man behind the house carrying his family's surname. Based between Lisbon and Dubai, the brand’s founder aims to create a Maison that expresses his personal aesthetic through timeless designs and refined quality. Based between Dubai and Lisbon, Marques comes from a small town in the Portuguese countryside but over the years his will to achieve more along with a passion for luxury led him to study the field at the International University of Monaco. This step ultimately led him to the United Arab Emirates and starting a career in the first Arab Hypercar manufacturer - W Motors, a boutique company dedicated to creating multi-million euro sportscars. It was in Dubai where his persona gathered significant attention across social media, leading to a nomination as one of the most promising content creators in the Middle East along with many projects and experiences over the years.

23www.cpmagazine.net Talent Radar Words: JOSÉ BERROCOSO

CPM: What is your first fashion memory?

JM: I always had an interest in this field since I was a kid, particularly when it comes to the higher end of fashion where you can have a lot more freedom to create and explore the less conventional side. It took a while to embark on this project but the final push that led me to start was in 2019 when I had the opportunity to attend men's fashion week in Paris and Milan for the first time and during that experience, something clicked and I thought to myself "This is fascinating, I want to be part of this world and create something even better myself".

JM: Definitely not the first, but the most memorable one dates back only a handful of years to 2019. This was when I first attended Men's Fashion Week in Paris and was completely astonished after attending the first Kris Van Assche show for Berluti at Palais Garnier - the ambience, the collection, and the people attending made it truly otherworldly.

JM: It was something I always wanted to do, and after almost two years of work behind the scenes, we finally got the opportunity to bring this project to reality in 2020. The vision for MARQUES is to create a heritage brand across different fields. A label led by a luxurious yet subtle aesthetic that holds on attention to detail, fine materials, and exquisite craftsmanship as a foundation. Something for the contemporary gentleman in the know.

JM: It is fundamental when you are creating a piece that is meant to last and make a statement. Nowadays seems like a lot of brands don't go beyond stamping their logo on a garment to make it "luxury" but for us that is far from being enough and we go the extra mile. This is the reason why it took us over a year just to find the right suppliers and craftsmen, leading us to exclusively use leather and textiles from Italy and France while having tailors and seamstresses with decades of experience that worked for the most reputable stores in Lisbon over the years.

JM: The Destination Jacket, a design that ended up becoming our best seller and a permanent brand staple across collections. Believe its success is due to the combination of a subtle design and bold materials, in its first iteration was crafted out of black Italian crocodile leather on the outside and lined with monogrammed silk on the inside. Since then several versions of it were created under our Bespoke Atelier for the most demanding patrons: from sportier versions in pastel blue Croco to bolder adaptations in pink pony fur.

What’s the importance of fabrication?

JM: When I look to the past for inspiration a few trends pop up, like the strong structured silhouettes by Yves Saint Laurent in his prime or detailed graphic prints like the ones mastered by Gianni Versace with his baroque illustrations on silk. Looking into the future I see an abundance of metallic tones, a sportive aesthetic, and a warm feeling towards the past coming just around the corner - a combination of trends you might spot in our upcoming collection to be presented in Dubai towards the end of the year.

John A.C. Marques: It happened back in Monaco during my Master's degree in luxury, it had a very strong component when it comes to high-end fashion and what surrounds it. From there it happened very organically when I later moved to Dubai and after a few months started working with brands such as Christian Louboutin, Ounass, and Corneliani on different projects given my exposure on social media - something that led me to be involved with people from the industry in the region.

CityPages Magazine: How did you get into fashion?

CPM: What Inspired You To Be a Designer?

CPM: What is your best and worst fashion moment?

JM: In a more abstract dimension, I believe fashion is one of the ultimate forms of personal expression, a reflection of who someone is and who they aspire to be. More tangibly, it is synonym with attention to detail and craftsmanship, a combination of time, talent, and resources to create something beautiful to the creator's eyes.

JM: My best fashion moment has to be when, after months of work, I got my hands on the first final piece of my first collection and got to wear it out turning heads - more than the look itself, it was all the emotions attached to it. When it comes to worst I like to believe there are no bad fashion moments, just some looks that don't age well ...

CPM: What are your favourite trends in fashion, past and present?

CPM: Have you always dreamed of having your own label? Please tell us more about MARQUES.

CPM: What was the first piece you ever designed?

CPM: Where do you draw inspiration from when creating a new collection?

JM: Travelling and art are the main sources of inspiration for me, this is one of the reasons why I love to travel and explore new destinations. Just getting lost in new cities, people watch on a busy street and visit interesting galleries and museums. You can even spot it on a few pieces named after streets or cities.

24 AUGUST 2022

CPM: Your focus is so heavy on fabrics and their quality, which is very notable in fashion design.

CPM: What does fashion mean to you?

Until now we were able to explore more senses and create our growing scent collection, released a limited series of photography prints embodying the cosmopolitan component of our DNA, and experimented with accessories. But in the long term, there are two fields in particular that I would love to dive into: interior design and the automotive world.

25www.cpmagazine.net

CPM: Fragrances, accessories, art... What’s next for MARQUES?

I'll have to pick two, the origin cities of MARQUES: Lisbon and Dubai. Lisbon is where I first lived by myself and feel like it became a hub for creatives with a vibrant crowd and exciting social life. Now Dubai is the place I have called home for a good part of the last decade, a cosmopolitan city filled with fascinating people and an incredible vision for the future - it is the place that showed me everything is possible if you put your mind to it.

JM: While we are working on bringing a few physical locations to reality, we currently hold a few trunk shows throughout the year where anyone can book a private appointment and discover our creations. These events usually take place in Dubai and we announce them ahead of time on our social media, but since the majority of our patrons are distributed throuhgout the GCC we consider expanding the concept into other cities where a significant number of clients are based such as Riyadh and Doha. When it comes to the digital side of things, you can always explore the latest pieces on our online store and even reach us on Instagram for any purchases or bespoke work.

JM: Part of my vision is to expand MARQUES from just a menswear brand to several different fields while maintaining our aesthetic and commitment to quality.

CPM: What city in the world inspires you the JM:most?

CPM: How can we purchase your products?

“We brought the collection to life with plays of materials and textures and created interesting contrasts using colours, fabrics, and silhouettes – a clash of clichés,” said Designer Shaikha Noor Al Khalifa. “From metal woven denims sitting next to glossy silk taffetas and duchess satins, or sportswear silhouettes mixed with couture-level details.”

Introducing denim to the brand for the first time, Designer Shaikha Haya said, “It feels right when we consider the way we have all adapted our wardrobes to working from home over the past two years.”

This latest collection carries on the brand’s direction initiated after 2020’s hiatus, which is focused on foritfying Noon By Noor’s presence in the European market and building on its International presence.

6 EXERCISES

The good thing is there are ways to keep normal blood pressure. Blood pressure reduction starts with a healthy diet, exercise training such as aerobic exercise, and regular blood pressure monitor. But as your heart gains fitness through physical activity, it pumps blood more efficiently through your body, ultimately lowering your blood pressure level.

When your doctor tells you that you have high blood pressure, the news might come with all sorts of recommendations, like avoiding stress, eating healthy foods, and exercising. What does exercise have to do with blood pressure, and what activity helps the most?

fatemahfitness_

Fortunately, a variety of exercises can help to lower-blood pressure meaning you can choose the kind of movement you enjoy the most.

W

Simply, high blood pressure occurs when your blood pressure consistently measures above the normal range. If it stays high, that may compromise your heart health and may lead to certain heart disease, such as hypertension and heart attack.

Fatema AlOthman TO LOWER PRESSUREBLOOD

36 AUGUST 2022

Whatever activity you choose, aim for a minimum of 30 minutes per day and prepare to exercise your way to better heart health.

2- Running No matter your pace, running can be an amazing way to raise your heart rate, exercise your lungs, and strengthen your heart. At the same time, you’ll also engage the large muscle groups in your legs.

The exercises listed here are excellent places to start but don’t be afraid to try something new. As long as an activity raises your heart rate, it’s a prime option to help lower your blood pressure.

Walking satisfies the two guiding factors for bloodpressure-lowering exercise. These include:

6- Trying a New Sport

As long as you’re moving consistently a few times a week, these team activities can help you find a path to fitness and maybe even make some friends along the way.

6 exercises will help you to lower blood pressure:

4- Weightlifting

lMoving sustainably for at least 30 minutes

If you’re seeking a way to lower your blood pressure that’s also gentle on your joints, swimming could be the perfect option. When swimming, you can raise your heart rate while protecting your knees, ankles, and back.

Weightlifting is not only a form of strength training but also resistance training. With the right approach, weightlifting can also be an opportune way to lower your blood pressure. However, remember that the goal is to exercise your heart—meaning that you’ll want to use weightlifting as a type of cardio activity rather than a strength-building one.

Overall, running is a higher-impact activity than walking and if you’re new to this type of exercise, it can take some time to work up your endurance. Try alternating walking and running for a few minutes each until you can run for longer distances.

37www.cpmagazine.net

You might not think of walking as exercise, but it’s one of the most natural and accessible forms of physical activity available.

lRaising your heart rate and breathing rate

Want to lower your blood pressure while jamming to your favorite tunes? Dance classes, or group training sessions like Zumba classes that incorporate music and dance moves, offer a joyful way to break a sweat and raise your heart rate.

It should be important to note that exercise alone is not enough. It doesn’t hurt to consult your doctor if you need blood pressure medication to reduce your blood pressure level.

For all these reasons, running can be an excellent activity to help lower your blood pressure.

The Fontenay Hotel is a reflection of modern Hamburg and an homage to the Hanseatic city. Located on the shores of the Outer Alster Lake, this “modern classic” forms a unique symbiosis of urban nature and cosmopolitan lifestyle. The fascinating sculptural architecture houses 130 luxurious rooms and suites. At the heart of the building, an impressive 27-metre high atrium features a glassed-in garden courtyard. Parkview Garden Restaurant offers a multifaceted cuisine, while the Fontenay Bar creates a relaxed atmosphere with breathtaking views across the Alster Lake. The gourmet restaurant, Lakeside, is situated on the 7th floor above. Four event spaces with daylight illumination ranging from 48 – 220m2 can be hired for conferences and events. High above Hamburg’s rooftops, an area of 1,000 m2 offers an exclusive spa experience with a 20m indoor/ outdoor pool. The Fontenay Hotel is a member of the Leading Hotels of the World.
The hotel is named after John Fontenay, one of the most successful Hanseatic merchants of the early 19th century. Presumed to have been born in 1770 in Pennsylvania, USA, he arrived in Hamburg in 1800, and swiftly made a career in the shipping business. In 1802, he married a wealthy widow, Anna Catharina Kirsten, who brought 4 children into the marriage. Despite the damaging effects of the Napoleonic wars on trade, and the family’s departure from Hamburg between 1810 and 1814, John Fontenay was able to build a substantial fortune. Following his return to the city in 1814, he used his success to purchase a range of plots outside the Wallring area, near Dammtor. At the time of his death, Fontenay owned more than 80,000m2 of land in the city’s best locations. Today, many street names like ‘Fontenay Allee’, or ‘Klein Fontenay’ as well as his carefully restored home and garden point to the history of these idyllic estates. This inheritance is currently managed by the Fontenay Trust and unites the descendants of John Fontenay’s stepchildren.

NATURE AND WATER: LAKESIDE LUXURY

The Japanese call Hamburg “The green city in the woods” –and not without reason: 27 per cent of Hamburg comprises natural areas. The Fontenay is situated in one such natural area on the south- westerly shore of the Alster Lake. It’s a magical, beautiful place of nature and tranquillity, right in the heart of the city. It can be described as an urban resort. Thanks to the unique architecture the entire building is flooded with light; 14,000m2 of glass surfaces offer views across the Alster Lake, the hotel gardens and neighbouring areas. And while the infinity pool seems to merge with the lake, the boundaries between interior and exterior fade. A short walk along the Alster takes visitors to Hamburg’s most fashionable districts, city centre, shopping areas, port, and the new HafenCity. As the epitome of pure ‘Lakeside Luxury’, The Fontenay represents the perfect balance between nature and urban living. The hotel is a prime example for the global mega trend ‘Urban Nature’.

49www.cpmagazine.net

‘Hotel in the Park’, this is how architect Jan Störmer entitled his vision when he began his first drawings. The amorphous shape with its sculpted roofscape evolved from three intertwining circles. They blend seamlessly with their surroundings, creating a balance between nature and the urban sphere. The organic shape means the hotel has no backside; it’s surrounded by trees and flooded with light. The three circles intertwine and narrow in the centre where the elevators and the glassed-in courtyard, featuring trees, as well as the 27 metre high enclosed atrium, can be found.

50 AUGUST 2022

A look at the area surrounding The Fontenay quickly reveals how green the city of Hamburg is. In the Rotherbaum district, English Tudor style architecture meets the classic grandeur of buildings from the Wilhelmanian period. Thanks to the ‘Alster Ordinance’, white is the most dominant colour of the impressive, yet unobtrusive buildings. The area features expansive parks, numerous foreign consulates, the University of Hamburg, the North German Broadcasting Corporation (NDR) as well as the Museum of Ethnology. Of course, the Alster Lake is always a draw with its park- inspired shores and water sports activities, including paddle boarding, sailing and rowing.

The lake-facing side of The Fontenay plot is made up of an expansive green area with 130-year old plane trees. The 7m wide drive offers ample space for three cars to park side by side. It leads to the centrepiece, the ‘Heaven Mirror’, a mosaic 13.6m in diameters. More than 200 granite blocks arranged in a circle and weighing 100 tons reflect the sky and the surrounding trees when viewed from above.

The circular theme continues throughout the building; the shape of the facade is either concave or convex, no wall is parallel to the other, only the guest rooms are separated by straight walls. The hotel was conceived with all rooms facing Theoutwards.Fontenay

51www.cpmagazine.net

The interior is also filled with round, organic shapes – from the semi-circular 25 metre long sofa in the atrium, and the circular lamps in the events area or the semi-circular rugs in the room corridors. The interior’s colour palette exudes harmony: light beige, green onyx walls, warm whites, turquoise and royal blue accents reflect nature.

architecture is the work of Jan Störmer – born in 1942 in Berlin – and his architectural practice Störmer Murphy and Partners. Jan Störmer has significantly shaped the realm of architecture in Hamburg. He has an extensive role as judge in architectural competitions and holds lectures in Germany and abroad.

Everything – from the terrazzo floors in the public areas to the parquet flooring, the granite stone and hand-tufted rugs – has been individually selected and designed for the hotel.

The Fontenay is a made-to-measure piece – the organic, curvaceous architecture commands that all the furniture is equally individual and custom-made. As Jan Störmer explains, “the shape of the hotel is so strong, it’s only natural that every piece of furniture must take this into consideration”.

Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

53www.cpmagazine.net

54 AUGUST 2022

Hi, I'm Aisha Syed and I'm a world touring classical violinist. What’s your educational background?

When I was barely thirteen I got accepted into the classical music prodigy school Yehudi Menuhin School in London, named after the famous violinist. I became the first Latina to have been admitted there by God's grace. For University, I received a full scholarship from two of the most prestigious music universities in the world, also located in London, the Royal College of Music (where people like Gustav Holst and Leopoldo Stokowski) and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (where the famous cellist Jacqueline Du Pré studied). How old were you when you started playingviolin? Why did you choose it? What or who influenced you?

Please introduce yourself to our readers.

As a Christian my main inspirational source comes from Christ, after that the actual composers like Johann Sebastian Bach (who was actually a Christian too) and many more serve as inspiration for my interpretations. What kind of violin(s) do you have? By the grace of God, my sponsors Florian Leonhard Fine Violins have allowed me to perform on many Stradivarius in the last nine years. These are instruments worth a huge amount and are world treasures.

I started when I was five because I wanted to imitate my sister who is older and then I loved it so much that even the discipline side of it was enjoyable to me. Did you learn other instruments?

www.cpmagazine.net55

Classical Music for me is the universal type of music. It can connect humans through works that were written hundreds of years ago yet are still relevant today. Bach, Brahms, Beethoven, Mozart and many more. How do you choose the pieces you play?

A lot of major achievements have happened in my career by Gods grace since then. We sold out at Carnegie Hall in New York twice, Radio France and BBC Radio 3 have chosen our recordings for prestigious broadcasting, sold out debut at the Kennedy Center, the classical music giant Naxos is our new album distributor, Vogue magazine ran a story about our career, Strad Magazine chose our foundation Music for Life to tell its story, had my debut in India, Japan, South Korea, China, performed at the prestigious Palau de les Arts in Spain, Reales Alcázares in Sevilla Spain also and many many more countries, totaling 30 countries and many more cities. How would you describe the relationship with your instrument?

It's usually a mixture of the Maestro's suggestions and my own. Sometimes I can choose it sometimes not. For the Latinamerican leg of the world tour I chose to play the Tchaikovsky violin concerto on all concerts but for the US and Europe the repertoire will be totally different. Bruch, Elgar, Bach and many more. What inspires your music?

I love being on stage but that is the finished product of hundreds of hours working on only one piece. When I practice it is definitely a work type relationship, but on stage is definitely so full of joy. How would you best describe the type of music you play?

What do you consider to be incisive moments in your artistic work and/or career? My Carnegie Hall performances, BBC Radio 3 choosing our interpretation for their Performing Miracles prestigious list, debuts at the Kennedy Center, Palau de les Arts in Spain, ROH in Mumbai, National Philharmonic Hall in Lithuania, my debut as an eleven year old with the National Symphony Orchestra of my home country Dominican Republic, my acceptance at the Menuhin school, the full scholarships the Royal College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama gave me, Radio France choosing our new album, and being able to use a Stradivarius by Gods grace and thanks to Florian Leonhard Fine Violins.

Absolutely, piano, viola and the recorder. It's been a few years since we first interviewed you. Can you quickly tell us what major events and achievements happened since then?

I love performing the Brahms, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky violin concertos. The Chacconne by Bach is also a favorite. What is your routine before a performance? Do you follow any superstitions or any special preparations?

It's been amazing, they have had incredible projects with me and I'm so happy to be a Lexus Brand Ambassador. Our adverts include music by Vivaldi and Ysaye which is so fantastic to see and hear on mainstream media.

I have no superstitions whatsoever. I pray a lot and I also warm up to Christian hymns like Amazing Grace to focus on what the most important thing is for me, to give God all glory and honour when I perform. You are also the brand ambassador for the LEXUS brand. Can you explain more about it and how do you feel about the collaboration?

Who do you dream of performing with?

How did you spend the time during the COVIDpandemic?

Besides my trip to Asia I am performing in Europe, Italy, Switzerland and the UK. In Geneve, I will perform a concert for the United Nations which I am very thankful and excited about.

I did a lot of violin solo recording, learned all the complete Sonatas and Partitas by J. S. Bach and recorded them but I also spent much needed time with my family. I also gave birth to my second child. We heard you will be performing in Qatar soon. Can you tell us more about that and your message for your fans in Middle-East and Qatar in specific. I love the Middle East, it is such a stunning region so you can imagine how elated I am to be performing in Qatar. The concert is part of my world tour and will be on October 3. What’s next for you?

After a huge concert in Argentina the organizers took me to a steak restaurant and after I finished eating and was about to leave the entire restaurant started shouting in Spanish "Que toque! Que toque!" which means something like play! Play! and so I took my violin out and played. I loved the energy. How does the new popularity of music streamingaffect the popularity of classical music? To what extent do classical musicians need to adapt?

56 AUGUST 2022

We have adapted but we know that classical music is the universal type of music so it will always have an audience, maybe an older audience but it will always have one. Do you have a favorite violin piece that you like to perform? Who is your favorite composer?

Definitely Zubin Mehta and Gustavo Dudamel. Where is the coolest place you have played?

57www.cpmagazine.net Your message for us at CP Magazine? Thank you for lifting culture to all your readers, congratulations on a fantastic magazine and thank you for having me again. God bless!

The Last White Man by Mohsin Hamid

From the New York Times bestselling author of Exit West, a story of love, loss, and rediscovery in a time of unsettling change One morning, Anders wakes to find that his skin has turned dark, his reflection a stranger to him. At first he tells only Oona, an old friend, newly a lover. Soon, reports of similar occurrences surface across the land. Some see in the transformations the long-dreaded overturning of an established order, to be resisted to a bitter end. In many, like Anders's father and Oona's mother, a sense of profound loss wars with profound love. As the bond between Anders and Oona deepens, change takes on a different shading: a chance to see one another, face to face, Hamid'sanew. The Last White Man invites us to envision a futureour future - that dares to reimagine who we think we are, and how we might yet be together.

Growing up as the daughter of Mexican immigrants in Chicago in the '90s, Erika Sanchez was a self-described pariah, misfit, and disappointment—a foul-mouthed, melancholic rabblerouser who painted her nails black but also loved comedy, often laughing so hard with her friends that she had to leave her school classroom. Twenty-five years later, she's now an award-winning novelist, poet, and essayist, but she's still got an irrepressible laugh, acerbic wit, and singular powers of perception about the world around her. In these essays, Sanchez writes about everything from sex to white feminism to debilitating depression, revealing an interior life rich with ideas, self-awareness, and perception. Raunchy, insightful, unapologetic, and brutally honest, Crying in the Bathroom is Sanchez at her best—a book that will make you feel that post-confessional high that comes from talking for hours with your best friend.

NEW AUGUST RELEASES since 2010

Isaac Fitzgerald has lived many lives. He's been an altar boy, a bartender, a fat kid, a smuggler, a biker, a prince of New England. But before all that, he was a bomb that exploded his parents' lives-or so he was told. In Dirtbag, Massachusetts, Fitzgerald, with warmth and humor, recounts his ongoing search for forgiveness, a more far-reaching vision of masculinity, and a more expansive definition of family and self. Fitzgerald's memoir-in-essays begins with a childhood that moves at breakneck speed from safety to violence, recounting an extraordinary pilgrimage through trauma to selfunderstanding and, ultimately, acceptance. From growing up in a Boston homeless shelter to bartending in San Francisco, from smuggling medical supplies into Burma to his lifelong struggle to make peace with his body, Fitzgerald strives to take control of his own story: one that aims to put aside anger, isolation, and entitlement to embrace the idea that one can be generous to oneself by being generous to others. Gritty and clear-eyed, loud-hearted and beautiful, Dirtbag, Massachusetts is a rollicking book that might also be a lifeline.

The Book of Gothel by Mary McMyne Haelewise has always lived under the shadow of her mother, Hedda—a woman who will do anything to keep her daughter protected. For with her strange black eyes and even stranger fainting spells, Haelewise is shunned by her medieval village, and her only solace lies in the stories her mother tells of childstealing witches, of princes in wolf-skins, of an ancient tower cloaked in mist, where women will find shelter if they are brave enough to seek it. Then, Hedda dies, and Haelewise is left unmoored. With nothing left for her in her village, she sets out to find the legendary tower her mother used to speak of—a place called Gothel, where Haelewise meets a wise woman willing to take her under her Butwing.Haelewise is not the only woman to seek refuge at Gothel. It’s also a haven for a girl named Rika, who carries with her a secret the Church strives to keep hidden. A secret that unlocks a dark world of ancient spells and murderous nobles behind the world Haelewise has always known Face by Joma West Schuyler and Madeline Burroughs have the perfect Face—rich and powerful enough to assure their dominance in society. But in SchAddie’s household, cracks are beginning to appear. Schuyler is bored and taking risks. Maddie is becoming brittle, her happiness ever more fleeting. And their menial is fighting the most bizarre compulsions. In Face, skin color is an aesthetic choice designed by professionals, consent is a pre-checked box on the path to social acceptance, and your online profile isn’t just the most important thing—it’s the only thing. Face is a novel about the lies we allow ourselves to believe in order to make us feel whole.

Professor Jeremiah Post, the poor handsome man, is in fact standing in the way of Alejandra “Alex” Torres turning Loretta’s, her grandmother’s bar, into a viable business. The hot brainiac who sleeps in one of the upstairs tenant rooms already has all of her Mexican American family’s admiration; she won’t let him have the bar and building she needs to resurrect her career, too.

When Michael K. Williams died on September 6, 2021, he left behind a career as one of the most electrifying actors of his generation. From his star turn as Omar Little in The Wire to Chalky White in Boardwalk Empire to Emmy-nominated roles in HBO's The Night Of and Lovecraft Country, Williams inhabited a slew of indelible roles that he portrayed with a rawness and vulnerability that leapt off the screen. Beyond the nominations and acclaim, Williams played characters who connected, whose humanity couldn't be denied, whose stories were too often left out of the main narrative. At the time of his death, Williams had nearly finished a memoir that tells the story of his past while looking to the future, a book that merges his life and his life's work. Mike, as his friends knew him, was so much more than an actor. In Scenes from My Life, he traces his life in whole, from his childhood in East Flatbush and his early years as a dancer to his battles with addiction and the bar fight that left his face with his distinguishing scar. He was a committed Brooklyn resident and activist who dedicated his life to working with social justice organizations and his community, especially in helping at-risk youth find their voice and carve out their future. Williams worked to keep the spotlight on those he fought for and with, whom he believed in with his whole heart.

Proving Ground: The Untold Story of the Six Women Who Programmed the World’s First Modern Computer by Kathy Kleiman After the end of World War II, the race for technological supremacy sped on. Top-secret research into ballistics and computing, begun during the war to aid those on the front lines, continued across the United States as engineers and programmers rushed to complete their confidential assignments. Among them were six pioneering women, tasked with figuring out how to program the world's first general-purpose, programmable, allelectronic computer--better known as the ENIAC— even though there were no instruction codes or programming languages in existence. While most students of computer history are aware of this innovative machine, the great contributions of the women who programmed it were never told -- until now. Over the course of a decade, Kathy Kleiman met with four of the original six ENIAC Programmers and recorded extensive interviews with the women about their work. PROVING GROUND restores these women to their rightful place as technological revolutionaries. As the tech world continues to struggle with gender imbalance and its far-reaching consequences, the story of the ENIAC Programmers' groundbreaking work is more urgently necessary than ever before, and PROVING GROUND is the celebration they deserve.

Directed by Taika Waititi

Written by Taika Waititi and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson

Marvel has indeed crafted a phenomenal franchise with their superheroes and many would argue their casting choices are perfect. Perhaps none more perfect than Chris Hemsworth as Thor. In 2017 Marvel Studios released Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and had this quirky director from New Zealand named Taika Waititi write and direct it. His sense of odd and quirky humor hit a chord with audiences worldwide. Instead of dark and brooding and somewhat an oaf of a character in Thor; he instilled some levity and youthful joy into the character and story. Yet he kept an emotional edge in the themes of loss. This would be shown across the next few films with Thor losing his mother, father, Asgard, brother, and half of all life (Thanos snap). Thor has always been portrayed as a character that continuously has to cope with loss while he is accustomed to being the hero who saves. This film gets a “Writing a Movie RIGHT” review from me. Here comes the spoilers. The film opens with the plight of a man and his daughter walking across a desolate desert landscape searching for food and water. Eventually the young girl dies while cradled in her loving father’s arms. He succumbs as well and accepts his fate to die as well. Then he hears a voice beckon him to come. He finds an oasis in the desert where his god, Rapu is just casually living life without a care. The man pleads with his god to help the people to which he is dismissed. The god then tries to strangle the man and a sword, which was calling out to him before, comes to his hands and he kills the god. Then vows to kill all gods as vengeance for the death of his daughter. The casting of Christian Bale is perfect for Gorr the God Butcher. A brilliant actor and writing brings an emotional depth to the story of a man whose love for his child has now turned to searing hate. Much like with Thanos flawed vision of a perfect world, Gorr has a strong drive propelling him to be the villain. Yet a villain we can empathize with and be divided on whether he is fully right or completely wrong given the carelessness and selfishness we see other gods live their lives. Thor is with the Guardians of the Galaxy helping an alien race fight off aggressors in their religious temple. Thor finally joins the fight.

Mayhem is had and victory achieved, then afterwards they check messages across the galaxy and one is a distress call from Sif, an old friend of Thor’s. They decide it best to part ways as there are so many distress calls. Thor goes with Korg to find Sif nearly dead on the battlefield. She tells him of Gorr, his plan to kill all gods, and his next target is New Asgard. He takes her to New Asgard and Gorr is already attacking the city with his shadow realm monsters. Thor joins the fight and crosses paths with Mjolnir but it goes to the hand of another “Thor”. Soon it is revealed that it is Jane Foster, Thor’s exgirlfriend. They band together to finish the fight, but Gorr escapes while kidnapping all the children from the city and taking them to the shadow realm.

Thor decides that they will need an army to fight Gorr and he feels that they should go to Omnipotence City where Zeus is the leader of gods. Thor idolized Zeus growing up and now is disappointed to see a selfish Zeus who is scared of Gorr and now fears that Thor and his friends know the location of their city and says they cannot leave. A fight breaks out and Korg is nearly killed, and Thor overpowers Zeus with his own Thunderbolt weapon. With the Thunderbolt, Thor believes they can fight Gorr and the small group travels to the shadow realm to meet him there and rescue the kids. While searching for the kids Jane finds Gorr’s plans to use Strombreaker to open a way to Eternity the celestial being who can grant him his wish to kill all gods.

Gorr captures them and as they break free and barley escape, Gorr steals Stormbreaker. Jane reveal her stage four cancer diagnosis to Thor and it is revealed that Mjolnir is draining her of life each time she uses the hammer. Thor implores her to stay in the hospital while he goes to fight Gorr.

This is where I will stop short of the spoiler because the ending is worth everything. The full circle of the theme of loss is beautifully done. Thor losing Jane to add to the list of loved ones he has lost, but gaining a child to care for and love is a bittersweet ending for the film on an emotional note. Seeing him try to parent a young child who has powers is humorous and leaves us knowing Thor may have the chance to heal from his emotional beatings he has taken across the various films in the franchise. The writers have nailed the drive of the villain and brought home all the losses of our hero to show that love is the answer. Where there is hate, love. Thor: Love and Thunder is a delight for all ages that deserves another film by these writers and director to continue to delight audiences. To the director I say ‘Chur ThanksBro!’ for reading Writing Movie ‘WRONGS’.

FLAGSHIP PERFORMANCE

Thanks to Huawei’s excellent architecture and stacking capabilities, the tablet manages to pack an 8300mAh ultra-large battery in its ultra-thin and compact body. As remote work gradually becomes a norm, video conferencing has become increasingly important. HUAWEI MatePad Pro is designed for Pro-level Productivity. Noises can affect user experiences in video conferences and online classes. To improve online meetings, Huawei upgraded its self-developed AI noise cancellation feature once again and optimized algorithms that tap into the Deep Neural Network. The optimized neural network algorithm can reduce the residual noise after noise reduction while lowering the impact of noises on vocals.

The new HUAWEI MatePad Pro supports Tablet-PC Multi-screen Collaboration capabilities which contain three modes; Mirror Mode, Extend Mode and Collaborate Mode. In Mirror Mode, the laptop’s screen is mirrored to the tablet display, allowing users to directly work on files and documents, or draw/sketch on their laptop with the stylus of the HUAWEI MatePad Pro just as professional designers would. Then there is Extend Mode, which transforms the HUAWEI MatePad Pro into a second screen, providing extra screen space to display more content; great for online shopping, or when browsing the Internet, and there are so many items to explore!

Huawei has long tried to help user productivity with its tablets by creating easy-to-use features. HUAWEI MatePad Pro allows users to access Huawei’s native apps, in landscape mode. The Multi-window has been upgraded to support one-tap interaction. When an app takes up the full screen, you now just need to slide your finger to the upper left corner to split the screen and slide to the upper right corner to bring up an App Bubble. Currently, you can run up to four concurrent tasks with Multiwindow, including two split windows and two App Bubbles.

The new Colour Capture feature allows you to select and apply colours across different apps in any use scenario, including Multi-window, App Multiplier, or small window. Colours on the collaborative phone can also be captured. After Multi-screen Collaboration is established between a phone and tablet, you can click and select a colour on a phone window and apply it to the tablet, improving the efficiency of cross-device working and creation.

The all-rounded tablet also supports seamless connectivity between Huawei tablet and smartphone thanks to Multi-Screen Collaboration. Multi-screen Collaboration enables simple drag-and-drop file transfers between smartphones and tablets. Peripheral sharing lets users type on the smartphone using the tablet’s keyboard and screen, play music saved on the smartphone with the tablet’s speakers and more.
