INTRODUCING

THE ZAHA HADID COLLECTION

With the passing of Zaha Hadid in March, Georg Jensen lost an exceedingly gifted and visionary design talent. She had just recently put the finishing touches on a new collection, these eight pieces are a testament both to her extraordinary eye as a designer and the effortless way she enabled the simple and the complex to coexist. Beautifully organic and powerful, each piece in the Zaha Hadid Collection of five rings and three cuff bangles takes inspiration from Hadid’s architecture, referencing the undulating silhouettes seen in many of her structures. As with the natural, fluid outlines of these buildings, her jewellery designs echo nature’s distinct sculptural forms. Just as ribbons of windows wrap each building, a ‘striped’ relief encircles these new designs, creating natural light, shade and a dramatic architectural line. The pieces, crafted in both sterling silver and black rhodium set with black diamonds, are carefully engineered to feel voluptuously tactile. In fact, the way in which jewellery itself is worn is reimagined: rings sweep gently across the hand or soar playfully above the finger; an elegant cuff bracelet engages in a natural play of light, wrapped around the wrist in a deceptively simple twist of silver. The silver naturally alternates between a polished and matte effect, while the black rhodium pieces lend a subtle gleam to graphic, architectural forms. 14

How to Buy a DSLR Camera

F

irst things first. DSLR stands for digital single lens reflex which are high performance cameras traditionally used by professional photographers but which are increasingly used by photography enthusiasts thanks to enhanced user friendly technology. With so many choices available in the market today, deciding which one to choose can be mind boggling. With that in mind, Canon Middle East, the world’s leading innovator of imaging products and solutions, has put together a guide on what to look for when buying a DSLR.

1. Price - A good place to start when thinking about buying a DSLR is price. DSLR cameras are more affordable nowadays with brands such as Canon offering great starter DSLRs for the enthusiastic amateur, to highly professional cameras from the EOS range. Another factor to take into account when purchasing a DSLR is the cost involved for additional equipment such as: •Lenses: can be tailored to your photographic requirements, i.e. if you are interested in landscape photography you will need a wide angle lens, 016

AUGUST 2016

while if you are more interested in taking wildlife or sports shots then you may require a telephoto lens. •Batteries: all models will come with one but if you are travelling it’s a good idea to always carry a spare. •Memory Cards: most serious photographers upgrade their memory cards to at least a 1 gigabyte card which allows you to take more highresolution images before needing to delete and free-up space. •Filters: filters can be used to manipulate the light that enters the camera. Filters are very useful for creating effects such as soft-lighting or warmer colours.

2. What will you use it for? When you head

into a camera store to purchase any type of DSLR camera the first thing most sales people will ask you is what type of photography you want to do. It is well worth asking yourself this question up front, as it will help you think through the type of features and accessories you’ll need. Whether you’re a beginner, semi professional or a professional photographer, Canon’s EOS

range has a wide variety of cameras with basic features/functions that are user friendly for amateurs, as well as the highly professional ones for professional photographers.

3. Resolution - How many megapixels does it have? This question is often one of the first to be asked about a new camera. Megapixels come into play as you consider how you’ll use your images. If you’re looking to print enlargements then more can be good but if you’re just going to print in small sizes or use them for e-mailing friends then it’s not so crucial. Canon’s EOS series offers a wide range of resolution to suit your needs. 4. Added Value Features - DSLRs can offer a wide array of value added features, so it is always worth remembering what you hope to get out of your photography before investing in additional technology features. •Burst Mode: Is the ability to shoot a burst of images (by just holding down the shutter release) great for sports and action photography? DSLRs vary both in the number of frames they can shoot per second as well as how many images they can shoot in a single burst. •Maximum Shutter Speed: Most DSLRs will have a decent range of speeds available but some will have impressive top speeds which will be very useful if you’re into sports or action photography. •ISO Ratings: A camera's ISO function sets the light sensitivity of the camera's image sensor. A lower ISO setting is used when capturing overly bright scenes, since it reduces the light sensitivity of the image sensor. This is ideal when shooting at the beach, on a ski slope, or under the midday sun. A higher ISO setting is often used when shooting under dimmer conditions (cloudy days, indoors, etc.) since it increases the light sensitivity of the image sensor. •LCD Size: This feature can be important when you wish to review your pictures. The larger the LCD, the easier it will be to view your pictures after you take them, and to choose if you wish to keep them •Dust Protection: Another feature that has started appearing in the latest round of DSLR cameras is image sensor dust protection. This is a technology that has been integrated into Canon’s EOS series. The EOS Integrated Cleaning System is Canon´s technology for minimizing the sensor dust characteristic of DSLR cameras, which also includes software processing - something that will prove invaluable for Gulf photographers. •Flash: Once upon a time all photographers were tied to the light source available to them, but with ongoing flash development, photographers are able to bring a portable light source with them, improving both range and overall photographic results. www.cpmagazine.net

OMEGA’S RIO 2016 ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN

A

s the Official Timekeeper of the Olympic Games, OMEGA has launched its international advertising campaign for Rio 2016. Focusing on the dreams of athletes, the series of print, retail, digital and television commercials feature four of OMEGA’s Olympic Games brand ambassadors including Michael Phelps, Chad le Clos, Sergio Garcia and Jessica Ennis-Hill. “Recording Olympic Dreams Since 1932” is the prominent headline that underpins the entire campaign. This statement reflects OMEGA’s long history of timekeeping at the Olympic Games and its dedication to supporting and recording the dreams of all competitors who strive for glory. Rio 2016 will be the 27th time that OMEGA has fulfilled the Official Timekeeper role. Over the past 84 years, the brand has evolved and revolutionised the equipment that athletes depend on and has recorded every result with tremendous precision and expertise. For the athletes who build their hopes and careers around every second, OMEGA has been a trusted name behind the clock. The advertising has been produced with a “double exposure” design. This layered theme allows the viewer to see inside the minds of the athletes, to watch their dreams build and get a sense of the motivation that fuels their performances. To create the imagery, OMEGA photographed and filmed four of its own Olympic Games brand ambassadors. British heptathlete Jessica Ennis-Hill, Spanish golfer Sergio Garcia, South African swimmer Chad le Clos and American swimmer Michael Phelps were used as the central figures in each advertisement. Three of the athletes are gold medallists, with Phelps being the most decorated Olympian of all time, so their connection to dreams and fulfilment is particularly credible. For an added dreamlike quality, the music used in the television campaign has been recorded by a young boy. The song Hall of Fame, originally recorded by The Script, has been reimagined to reflect the dreams that drive many athletes from a young age. This sentiment was particularly made clear when Michael Phelps spoke to OMEGA during filming: “When I started this journey in 2000, did I think I would be sitting where I am today? No. But I dreamt it. I believed that I could get there and I never gave up. I was only 15, but I sat down with my agent and told him that I wanted to change the sport of swimming.” At Rio 2016, it is certain that many more Olympic Games dreams will be realised. Who will be standing on top each podium? Only time, and OMEGA’s equipment, will tell.

A GUIDE TO DIVING IN THE EGYPTIAN RED SEA

T

he Red Sea is one of the world’s best known diving destinations and widely considered to be one of the seven wonders of the underwater world. The Egypt Tourism Authority looks back at 65 years of diving in the Egyptian Red Sea identifying the top must see dive sites for visitors. One of the earliest divers of the Egyptian Red Sea was Jacques Costeau in 1951 whose early adventures are recounted in his book, The Silent World. Costeau was an explorer, photographer, filmmaker and researcher who studied sea and marine life. He dived The Brothers Island which features rare black coral, two wrecks and very often sightings of hammerhead sharks. Today there are hundreds of dive sites in the Egyptian Red Sea that tourists travel from all over the world to experience. With its exceptional visibility, warm water and an incredible diversity of sea life, here is a guide to the best of Egypt’s underwater magic: 1.Ras Mohamed National Park: Shark reef The park is situated approximately 12km from the famous tourist resort of Sharm el Sheikh. The most prized spots in this fantastic location include Shark Reef and Yolanda Reef which offer divers the chance 020

AUGUST 2016

to see every single species of fish in the Red Sea in one location. 2. Straits of Tiran: Jackson Reef (Sharm el Sheikh) Thanks to its strong currents and abundance of nutrients, the coral here is magnificent and attracts a wide range of larger fish including hammerhead, gray and guitar sharks. 3. Thistlegorm (Sharm el Sheikh) Many consider this to be the most popular wreck dive in the world. SS Thistlegorm sank in 1941 after being attacked on its way from Glasgow to Alexandria. The ship’s contents included motorbikes, trucks and armored cars which sit on the bottom of the ocean alongside the wreck itself, complete with the hole from a German bomb. Divers can use torches to look inside the wreck and may even be lucky enough to spot a rare crocodile fish. 4. Brother Island (only safari boats) Quseir Divers will need to join a live-aboard to experience these spectacular islands and follow in the footsteps of Jacques Costeau. Both Big Brother and Little

Brother have a truly splendid display of coral and the crystal clear waters make these islands a paradise for underwater photography enthusiasts. The highlight is two shipwrecks, the Aida and the Numidia, which are truly a sight to behold and one you’ll never forget. 5. Elphinstone (Marsa Alam) One of the best known diving sites in Egypt, this drift dive offers divers the chance to swim together with hammerhead and oceanic white tip reef sharks whilst admiring the vast array of corals. For the lucky ones, tiger sharks and dolphins can sometimes be spotted here, making for a once in a lifetime experience. 6. Abu Dabbab (Marsa Alam) For sea turtle enthusiasts this is the place for you. At Abu Dabbab you are more likely to see a Sea Turtle and the lesser known Dugong, than at any of the other dive sites. There are two Dugongs living in Abu Dabbab; both receive special protection as

they are in danger of extinction. 7. Deadalus (only safari boats) Marsa Alam Find this site by looking for the lighthouse that live-aboard guests can visit. This is a deep dive which attracts hammerhead and thresher sharks and a unique pinnacle covered in pristine coral. 8. Dolphins house Marsa Alam Just off the coast of Marsa Alam, a pod of spinner dolphin lives on this offshore reef. Visitors can dive or even snorkel with these incredibly inquisitive creatures. Whilst there are no guarantees of seeing them, those lucky enough will want to return again and again.

of the wine bottles are still intact at the bottom of the ocean. 10. Gifun Isl. Hurghada With its steep drop offs and chance to see sea life including barracuda and tuna this collection of dive sites is a sight to behold. Look closely in the caverns to spot the huge array of species and make sure to have your camera ready. 11. Blue Hole (Dahab) One of the most famous diving locations on the shores of the red sea, also known as a hot spot for free diving due to the sea depth in the area and the lack of current. It’s also known for its mesmerizing underwater marine life and coral reef, making it a diver’s paradise.

9. Carnatic Wreck One of the oldest wrecks in the Red Sea, it To find out more about how you can is known by many as the ‘wreck of wine’ as experience diving in the Red Sea visit it carried hundreds of crates of wine. Some http://www.egypt.travel www.cpmagazine.net

FASHION JOURNAL by: Julieta Altamiranda @fashioncookieq8

Warmth Lover By now we’re feeling that a hot but nice day is what we live for and that August is like the Friday of summer. We want to enjoy the last full month of the season as much as possible, and what better way to do that than to wear the most fresh and easy outfits? Here we’ll go through the must-haves that you’ll need to create the most memorable summer you could dream of, while looking completely breezy and laid-back to the point that your future kids and grandchildren will enjoy looking at your photos from the summer of 2016! And who knows, maybe even your friends will use you as their style muse.

Think Pink Every little girl’s signature colour since birth is pink. Maybe that’s the reason why as adults we try to avoid it and try to stick to more mature colours. Well, we have great news! The creatives from labels such as Ashish, Rebecca Taylor and Emilia Wickstead, came up with new ways to reinvent the use of pink by setting a Barbie doll environment with bubble gum, cotton candy and dusty rose shades of pink. Don’t hesitate getting a pair of pale pink pants or hot pink shoes. You’ll definitely feel like a doll!! 022

AUGUST 2016

Tropical Vibes What’s great about summer (other than getting some vacations days) is that nature blossoms to the max. This season you will have a way to reflect that energy by wearing super cool palm prints and accessories that will take you and everyone around you to dream locations like Hawaii and The Bahamas. Our best bets are on Allude, Just Cavalli and Dolce & Gabbana. You won’t regret it!

The Big Deal This summer you should feel relaxed with what’s trending. Oversized t-shirts are the new ‘it’ dress that you need in your closet. You can find super chic ones with sequins or magical glitter embellishments at Prada and Ashish, or the hot printed ones from Ellesse or Edeline Lee. Another way to get this style is by borrowing a big t-shirt from your hubby’s or brother’s closet and wearing it with pants in a matching colour for a cool and simple look. www.cpmagazine.net

Doctor, Doctor!

W

e all need medical treatment at some point. Whether it’s for an ongoing condition, the result of an unfortunate accident or maybe just reassurance that a minor ailment is nothing to worry about, the advice of a doctor is invaluable. But we’re not all lucky enough to be covered by medical insurance so deciding which hospital to visit and which doctor to see isn’t always easy. It’s reassuring to know that Kuwait has an excellent health service. From Government hospitals to private clinics, the care and advice available is as good here as it is anywhere else in the world. But treatment aside, surely the most important thing for many is how much it will cost. Medical insurance can be extremely costly. As with any kind of insurance, the money used to pay claims comes from the common ‘pool’ of premiums paid by the policyholders. It’s obvious then, that the higher the claims, the higher the premiums. This being the case, surely it’s in everyone’s interest to keep the cost of those claims down? Apparently not. I was sickened recently to hear of what can only be called ‘sharp practice’ within a certain private hospital in Kuwait. The patient concerned had been suffering from acute pain in his lower back. Two courses of (costly) physiotherapy had failed to solve the problem. A further (costly) consultation resulted in the recommendation of a (costly) MRI scan followed by a (costly, but instant) steroid injection. When told that no insurance cover was in place, the

034

AUGUST 2016

consultant agreed to waive what now appeared to be an unnecessary MRI scan. Good news for the patient but slightly worrying from an insurance company’s point of view. With the MRI now deemed surplus to requirements, the patient expected the doctor to administer the promised pain killing injection. Instead, to his horror, he was asked to return one week later as a day patient, after (costly) blood analysis, a (costly) consultation with the anesthetist and (costly) expenses associated with day care – not to mention the risk of a general anesthetic. Seriously?! What happened to the instant injection? We all like to think our doctor knows best, so, although shocked by the extremes (and costs) now involved, the patient sat with the registrar to go through the necessary paperwork in preparation for the procedure. However, upon learning that no insurance cover was in force, the registrar contradicted the consultant’s advice and encouraged the patient to have the injection there and then, thus avoiding the cost of the pre-op procedures (which would normally have been passed to the Insurer) and the stress of a general anesthetic. Again, great news for the patient but even more worrying for the insurance company. As if the conflicting advice wasn’t reason enough for concern, the fact that treatments and procedures are being recommended when they are clearly not necessary is inexcusable. It’s no wonder medical insurance is so high.

“Never sacrifice the quality of your work

Kamal Elatawy is the Managing Director of SEC Interiors, a company specializing in architecture and planning in Kuwait. But despite the modern technology available in his field, the Egyptian born architect still prefers to sketch his thoughts on paper rather than rely on computer design software; just one of the qualities he relies upon to develop long term business relationships and ultimately, client satisfaction.

036

AUGUST 2016

037

Please introduce yourself to our readers: I am an Egyptian architect, born and raised in Cairo. I’m married with two kids and have been living in Kuwait since 2006. I started my career in Egypt being exposed to architectural, interior and graphic design in a number of reputable firms and design houses. I also had the great chance to contribute to a lot of projects in Egypt, United States, Japan and GCC countries in the last 25 years. Tell us about your education: I graduated from a reputable university in Cairo with a bachelor degree in architecture in 1992. During those college years, I received intensive training that shaped and formed my career. I was mentored by famous, talented architects who gave me the opportunity and the exposure to work in the various fields of architecture, interior design and historical buildings restoration which for me was particularly exciting. When did you begin your journey in the enticing world of interiors? It started in the early 90s. I had the opportunity to start in a number of small firms and design individual projects. This was challenging to say the least! Computers weren’t widely used for design purposes and there was basically no technology to support architects and designers. We had to rely on manual sketching and simple presentation techniques to impress clients. Compared with the fast and easy computer design software we use today, it took us a long time to complete a single project. However, in spite of the difficult and time consuming methods, I still find it easier to sketch a thought on paper in a way that clients, young architects and anyone can easily understand it. Tell us about your very first design job? It was back in the good old days, right after I graduated and I was assigned to design the interiors of a palace in Sanaa, Yemen. The classical design of arches, wood cladding and coloured glass with all the motives and oriental ornamentation taken from the rich heritage of old Yemen was an excellent opportunity for me to dive into the treasures of old nations. It was a one of a kind experience all in all. How and when did SEC Interiors (SECi) get started? SEC Interiors was an internal division of a structural engineering company which was established in 2008. It was decided that with the potential this department had, it would be better to turn it into an independent subsidiary. That was in 2014 and that’s when I joined the company and I started the mission of developing and restructuring with the goal of being one of the leading interior fit out and design companies in Kuwait. 038

Tell us about your interior style: I find myself always enjoying an industrial style and a bit of vintage. It’s a trend nowadays and a wide range of our clients enjoy it as well. It encouraged us to master its execution. It’s surprisingly great to take something very new and give it an antique look. What rules do you live by at SECi? Pay attention to your clients’ needs. As a master in the world of interiors, part of your job description is to listen to the clients’ wishes. Has there ever been a moment where you wanted to roll your eyes, jump across the table and say ‘NO! Not under my name!’? This is an embarrassing question but it happens, and I try to advise them on why what they think they want, won’t work. As designers, our job depends greatly on understanding the clients’ needs and sometimes what they need might not match the reality of the budget, the market or even the trends in the country. They simply might not be buildable and my role is to give them the consultation they need and shed light on alternative solutions. People trust you more when they feel like you’re their partner and you want what’s good for them and their business.

Tell us about your frustrations and rewards: It’s not frustration, but more of being consumed and exhausted. I’m almost always mentally burnt out from all the daily activities and meetings; having to decide who does what and what goes where. However, the rewarding part is much better; when a project is finalized and I see what used to be a simple layout is now built and accomplished. But what I enjoy the most is observing our clients’ facial expressions when they first lay eyes on the design they wanted, or the idea they wanted us to achieve. That ‘wow’ expression on their faces is everything. From your point of view, is design an art or a science? A lot of people out there don’t understand that the best designs are those combining both art and science; and let’s be honest, what good is a beautiful product if it’s not practical and functional? Yet, lots of products or objects are very useful and highly functional but overlooked simply because they don’t look appealing. I like to think that art and science are partners and one can’t work without the other. If you had no limits (money, resources) what would you create? You can always get crazy creative if you don’t have limitations, but it’s not the true essence of creativity. It’s not about what you don’t have that’s important, it’s what you can create with those limited resources. Tell us something about yourself which may surprise our readers: I’m partially colour blind! Some colour shades I cannot recognize very well and I ask for the assistance of my team. Who is your dream client? A client with an open budget - that would be amazing! Favourite project: I enjoy working with different clients who are passionate Article Store, Promenade Mall. Tell us about your typical work day: It’s never typical! In our field there is no room for routine, every day comes with new challenges and new demands and it’s never boring. It keeps me on my toes always.

Do you have any advice for young designers? Never lock yourselves in the box of rules. Understand them and then try to bend them or create your own. And of course, always focus on the details, the shapes, colours and lines of everything; capturing, magnifying and then transforming them into your own creation

What inspires you? New materials, weird shaped rocks, strange looking tree leaves. It’s fascinating how something seemingly unnoticeable can be the kick start of a new project.

YUMMY FOR THEIR LITTLE TUMMY:

Baby and Meat!

Sherifa Alasousi

B

abies are born with an iron store that lasts for about 6 months and a baby’s iron requirements are particularly high between the ages of 6 months and 2 years. This is a critical time for the growth of the brain and a lack of iron can lead to impaired mental and physical development. 1 in 5 babies aged 10 to 12 months is deficient in iron. When iron stores are low, less of the oxygen carrying pigment hemoglobin is made and less oxygen gets to the brain. This results in difficulty concentrating and a shortened attention span. A lack of iron can also make you feel tired. Meat is one of the foods that are naturally high in iron. Traditionally, medical professionals have recommended introducing meat to babies from around 7 months of age. Chicken/turkey is usually introduced first and red meats next. However, recent research has suggested that meat should be introduced as one of the first – or even the first – complementary foods for babies, generally from 6 months of age. This is true for breastfed babies in particular. The iron from breast milk is very bio available. However, when exclusively breastfed babies are introduced to solid foods, they begin to absorb less iron from their milk. This is because the iron in breast milk becomes ‘bound’ by the solid food they are consuming. Furthermore, new studies have found that the more finely ground the meat, the more easily the body can absorb this iron. Please note: Meat is a high protein food and very large amounts of protein may put a lot of strain on your baby’s immature kidneys. Therefore, we recommend offering regular, small quantities of meat mixed into another food.

Fabulous Frames Natalie Rose Choonoo

C

hoosing your spectacle frames is perhaps one of the most difficult fashion choices you will make. A spectacle frame is possibly the first thing people notice about you. It is a personal and long term choice which requires precise decision making skills. Here are some tips to guide you in your search for the ultimate eyewear accessory: 1. Choose frames that complement your face shape and features •If your face is angular or square in shape, a round or oval frame will complement you. •Conversely, if your face is round or oval, a square or angular frame will best suit you. •A heart shaped face i.e. wider at the top than at the bottom will benefit from having dramatic edges towards the bottom of the frame. This draws attention away from the wider part of your face. •If your face is wider at the bottom, make sure that the top of the frame is more noticeable. Attention will be drawn to your forehead instead. •The bridge of a frame can also affect the visual placement of your eyes and nose. A thin or clear bridge can make close set eyes look further apart. A colourful or dramatic nose bridge will add width to close set eyes.

044

AUGUST 2016

always be viewing through the middle of the lenses. •A frame should not pinch you by being too tight on the nose or the back of the ears. Neither should it slide down your nose immediately. •Your frame choice should ideally not touch the eyebrow line or your cheeks. This will irritate the skin. 4. Consider your prescription •If you are short-sighted, your lenses are thicker at the edges. Ideally you want to look for a frame which can hide this thickness. Appropriate frames would be plastics which are small. •Alternatively, if you are long-sighted, your lenses are thicker towards the middle. •With any high prescription, always ask to have your lenses compressed. This will enhance the cosmetic appeal of your spectacles. •However, even with maximum compression of your lenses, some frame choices may still not be suitable.

2. Skin tone •If you have a warmer skin tone, try browns, coppers, tortoise shell, reds, oranges and some muted blues. •A cooler skin tone benefits from greys, silvers, blacks, pinks and purples. •It is also important to consider the colour of your hair to balance out your final choice.

5. Frame materials •Frames are usually available in three broad categories: metal, plastic or a combination of both. •Titanium is a durable metal which is long lasting, light weight and hypo-allergic. •The choice of frame material should be based on your comfort and any allergic reactions you may be prone to. •Metal frames which have nose-pads work well for small and flat noses as these can be adjusted for comfort. •Plastic frames are perceived as being trendier. However due to our high temperatures, they do require regular adjustments.

3. Frame size •Frames that are too large can cause visual distortion and glare towards the edges, whereas frames that are too small can limit your peripheral vision. •A frame should not be wider than the widest part of your face. •When you try on a pair of spectacles, you should

Of course there are more factors to consider when choosing frames. The above should make the experience less stressful. Ultimately, your comfort should be priority. At International Optique, we always offer you accurate advice concerning your prescription and frame choice. 047

Hi, please introduce yourself to our readers: My name is Saidazim, I am a photographer and marketing lover from Uzbekistan. I run my photography studio in Tashkent and manage marketing projects of various fashion-related companies in Uzbekistan. Sometimes I do personal projects and exhibitions; usually they are inspired by the beauty of Central Asia, specifically of my motherland Uzbekistan. I try to give a new breath to Central Asian motives with more eastern, modern and fresh ideas. Tell us about your education: Currently I am studying MBA in Marketing. I have BA degree in the same field from University of Wales (UK).

From the look of your portfolio, you mainly focus on fashion photography. Once you’ve mastered this, is there another type of photography you’re looking to move into? My main field is advertising photography. Fashion is just a part of this huge industry. You are right though, while fashion is my main focus today, I also do food, product, portrait and interior photography as well. I think advertising photography by its nature is a fundamentally different and challenging field. You can never follow the same pattern to shoot, edit and present images in this industry. Every single project is different from another. It is mentally and physically hard work, but I am sure this is what makes my job special.

When did you first become interested in photography? What sparked it and when did you decide that it was what you were going to do? It is hard to identify the exact day or moment when I started to see myself as a photographer. Most probably my first photography experience happened in my school years. I was a founder of my own school newspaper at the age of 11, where I did a lot of media-related work, including interviewing people, designing content and of course, taking pictures. Photography was not my main field at the beginning, but it Coming back to your question as for the become more and more accumulative over types of photography fields I would like to a time. move into, recently I recognized that my projects usually range in various photography Were you educated in photography or fields. Where do you go and how do you find What cameras do you shoot with most inspiration for your photography? What and what advantages do you get from inspires you? using them? This year, I realized that I find inspiration in I use Canon. Sometimes I switch to different people. Most of all I am inspired by successful Canon models depending on the output people who are smart, beautiful and run purpose. Currently I use Canon 6D in the successful businesses. A few years ago I was studio. I like the lightness of the camera body inspired by projects and cultural heritages; and its compact size. You’ve clearly worked with a wide range of models. What tips can you recommend to people looking to expand their portfolio? Do you mean tips for models or for photographers? If we are talking about models, the first thing I would suggest is to practice in front of the mirror before going to the first test shooting. The simplest tip is to copy expressions, positions and characters delivered by professional models in the top glamour media. The second important thing I would love to suggest to a model is to not be in rush to go to a professional advertising shoot, especially if you have no experience. I’ve seen plenty of cases when the entire team of stylists, designers and assistants were failing to do a proper job because of an inexperienced model. As a model you should understand that if you fail to do a proper job today with professionals, you most probably won't be invited back tomorrow. If you are a photographer, make sure to scan images (polaroids/snapshots) of a model before the actual shooting. It is hard to explain, but I see how models would be photographed, lit and even styled before they arrive at the studio. 050

AUGUST 2016

I usually look to the face shape and shoulder proportions in relation to the face. I do look at the hair quality and the way it is cut. The skin colour is another important factor. If I do personal projects, I try to use different models in order to diversify images in my portfolio. How much time do you spend taking photos, versus retouching photos? Retouching is a very time consuming process. I definitely spend more time on retouching than I do photographing. Sometimes, for big projects, retouching is a team effort with my graphic designers. What is your favourite part of the photographic process? I love the actual photography process, especially when we’ve done all necessary preparations beforehand. This includes logistics, set decoration, styling and lighting plan. It is a pleasure when the work conditions are ready and you can just enjoy the photography.

To what degree do you retouch your photos. Photoshop? Lightroom? Aperture? Is there anything you like to do with your photos in particular, such as add certain curves? I use Lightroom for selection purposes. It is very convenient to mark/flag images, preview and sort them. All other jobs I do manually in Photoshop. The amount of retouching depends on the output purpose. Some projects are almost without any corrections, others involve hi-end beauty retouching with professional skills. What has been your most favourite photo shoot or collaboration? Describe the experience. Recently we did an experimental editorial collaboration with few Uzbekistan based underground designers who specialize in menswear. The segment of underground men’s fashion is not too big here, but we have a lot of talents who deserve attention. In this case, we conduct our personal editorial session to support them and to give them more exposure via our lenses. I invited a fashion stylist to mix the garments of these designers and collect proper looks for a story. I really hope we can see the result of this collaboration very soon! Which fashion photographers do you look up to? Recently I've been tracking for Vogue Italia's photography contest with new talents in photography. I was inspired by the works of a winner, Uldus Bakhtiozina. She did a marvelous job in delivering her unique vision via totally mind breaking styling and atmosphere. This is not something we usually associate with superior editing or composition, but it is about the mood and associative part of objects that are inside of the frame. Do you have a favourite photography website? I became very interested in various photography websites about 2-3 years ago. My favourite was 500px. These days I guess Instagram has become my guide into the world of photography. It is a convenient tool for me to quickly scan what is happening, apart from the quality. Who have you learned the most from? From all photographers and models who are around me. Every time I see the new works of my colleagues, I learn something new. If you can only have one lens for the rest of your life, what is it? Canon kit lens 24-105mm would be fine. It is quite universal, I will manage! How can we see more of your work and how can prospective clients reach you for collaborations? I am online with almost all social media. I am open for new friends and projects. My contact information with a brief portfolio is available on my website at www. saidazimfazilov.com www.cpmagazine.net

Incredible India! Gill Sherry

When it comes to India, there’s only ever been one destination on my wish list - The Taj Mahal. So when the opportunity presented itself to visit this particular corner of South Asia, I jumped at the chance.

O

ne thing I hadn’t bargained for was the logistical minefield I had to negotiate in order to get there. Agra is not the easiest of places to get to, not just from Kuwait but from anywhere. It sits on the banks of the River Yamuna in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. Whilst there is a small airport in Agra, most tourists find it necessary to fly to New Delhi and then travel the 131 miles (210 kms) to Agra by road or rail. Purchasing train tickets was a challenge in itself. The complex schedule is available to view online but you are only able to complete the booking if you have an Indian mobile number. Not exactly tourist friendly! Trying to beat the system by inventing a number is not an option as they will send a code to the given mobile number which you then have to enter on the website. Giving up on the online system, I asked the advice of the ‘travel desk’ in my New Delhi hotel. Unable to assist (I’m still not sure why!) they sent me to the train station. Here, I was faced with endless queues only to be told I could only buy tickets for travel on the same day and advised to find a Ministry Tourist Office specializing in train travel. This was a little more successful, but I ended up paying a hefty commission for the privilege of using their services. Boarding the train the following day was an experience in itself. Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station was a hive of activity and a haven for pick-pockets. Laden with luggage and feeling particularly vulnerable, I was relieved to finally take my seat aboard the Gatimaan Express. I was pleasantly surprised by both the comfort and speed of the train and although I declined the on-board meal, it looked edible and well presented. During the 100-minute journey, I barely put my

054

AUGUST 2016

camera down. The sights from Delhi to Agra were both shocking and humbling and I was truly sickened to witness such a horrific degree of poverty and desperation. Children roamed naked beside the train track; women bathed in dirty water; men foraged through tons on rubbish; families slept beneath bridges and trees. Though appalled by the conditions in which these people were forced to live, it was hard to feel anything other than sympathy for the impossible position they found themselves in. It was also incomprehensible to realize that the Government had allowed the situation to escalate to such a seemingly insurmountable scale. Arriving in Agra, I was relieved to see my name being held aloft by the hotel driver. Left to the mercy of hundreds of auto and rickshaw operators all desperate for a fare, I would undoubtedly have left myself wide open to their unscrupulous demeanor. As it was, I was transported swiftly, but safely, to my chosen hotel. Being a Friday, the Taj Mahal was closed but the hotel roof terrace afforded panoramic views of Agra and beyond, and with it, my first glimpse of the famous marble masterpiece. I could hardly wait to get there the following day. Not wanting to sit idle, I took an auto to Agra Fort. This walled city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was bustling with tourists, mostly Indian, who had gathered to gaze at the spectacular red sandstone structure. Despite the downpour, a predictable consequence of the seasonal monsoon, it was a sight to behold and once again, offered spectacular views of its more famous sister monument, the Taj Mahal. Evening entertainment in Agra is virtually nonexistent. It’s inadvisable to venture outside of your

hotel grounds, where thousands of locals line the streets in various states of undress. Their living conditions range from tin shacks, to self-made tents to a sheet of cardboard on the ground. It’s heartbreaking to witness their struggle for survival in the shadows of the wealth and opulence of some of India’s most luxurious hotels. Anyone with an ounce of compassion could not fail to be moved by the plight of the oppressed. Inevitably, the route leading to the Taj Mahal was littered with those selling their wares, each waiting to relieve you of your cash in exchange for a tacky souvenir. The entry system was made up of two queues, male and female, at the end of which your bag is searched and a random selection of items (sweets, phone chargers, cigarettes) confiscated. At long last, I was offered my first ground-level glimpse of the Taj Mahal. It’s difficult to describe the combined feeling of emotion and relief at finally laying eyes on this majestic mausoleum. I was hypnotized by its aura, its grandeur and its outstanding beauty. Four statant minarets stand guard around the large central dome, with four smaller domes completing the symmetrical splendour of this architectural marvel. For those unfamiliar with its history, the Taj Mahal was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan, as the final resting place for his beloved wife, Arjumand Banu Begum. Later known as Mumtaz Mahal (chosen one of the palace) she was the favourite of his three queens. Over 20,000 men and 1,000 elephants were used in its construction; the result being a combination of Indian, Persian and Islamic influences. Inside the mausoleum, a false tomb is housed within an octagonal marble chamber. The genuine casket containing the queen’s

actual remains, lies unseen, below ground level. Despite the growing crowds surrounding the Taj Mahal, I was able to enjoy every minute of my time within the grounds. The photo opportunities were endless and around every corner, lay another excuse to stand and marvel at the exquisite beauty of this timeless token of love. It’s one thing to see it in photographs, but quite another to be dwarfed by its physical glory. Reluctant to leave, I made my way towards the exit and through the scores of vendors eager to cash in on my emotional journey. Some can only be described as aggressive and a firm disposition was required to keep their advances at bay. Unwilling to disembark the train back in New Delhi without the reassurance of a hotel car to collect me, I decided to take a taxi back to the airport. Unlike the train, the road route avoided most of the squalor and filth associated with India’s Dalit population. I was impressed by the condition of both the road and the taxi and despite the four hour drive, arrived safely back at Delhi Airport in time for my flight back to Kuwait. My first trip to India was certainly one to remember. Whilst I was blown away by the magnificence of the Taj Mahal, I was also repulsed by the impoverishment on almost every street corner. It’s hard to believe that one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and the most visited attraction in India, is also home to such extreme levels of poverty that it’s almost impossible to separate the two. It’s certainly not for the fainthearted and whilst I will never forget the undeniable beauty of the Taj Mahal, my memories will always be tainted by the ugliness of its surroundings. www.cpmagazine.net

The fault in our genes

Curbing birth defects before conception!

Dr. Monika Chawla

C

hildren whose parents are cousins run more than double the risk of being born with a congenital abnormality. These marriages are a strong tradition in the MENA region due to the cultural importance of higher familial compatibility and stability. However, it has its downsides. Birth defects, also known as congenital abnormalities, can range from relatively minor problems such as extra fingers or toes through to major lifethreatening disease such as holes in the heart or brain development disorders. Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (genetic diagnosis before pregnancy starts) helps in the identification of these diseased embryos before conception. It begins with the process of in vitro fertilization that involves taking eggs from a woman’s body and then fertilizing them in a laboratory. Over the next three days, the embryo divides into a cluster in the laboratory. One or two cells

062

AUGUST 2016

are removed from the embryo carefully in a biopsy. This causes no damage to the embryo and is done skillfully. The cells are then evaluated to determine if the inheritance of a problematic gene is present in the embryo. Once the PGD procedure has been performed and embryos free of genetic problems have been identified, the embryo are placed back in the uterus, and implantation is possible. CASE REPORT:1 Mrs. FA attended the clinic one year ago with a history of two out of three children affected by “lysosomal storage disorder, a rare and lethal disease that causes the accumulation of dangerous toxins due to a genetic enzyme defect. F told us that the children seemed absolutely healthy when they were born but gradually discovered they suffered from serious infections, diarrheas, and hernias. Later, there was deformation of facial features, an enlarged tongue

This November... and enlarged liver (hepatomegaly). Other signs of this disease are mental retardation and development delay. The parents’ lives had taken an unexpected, drastic turn and they searched desperately for solutions. The couple, who were married first cousins, were later diagnosed with a passive carrier gene which caused the emergence of this disease. This detection allowed an innovative, life saving preventative measure to be taken. F underwent a treatment called preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), which allowed careful selection of healthy embryos for implantation, and has just delivered a healthy baby boy. Her joy has no bounds. CASE REPORT: 2 A and MJ were trying to conceive after three years of marriage. Both parents had heterozygous mutation (gene defect carriers) for Beta Thalassemia, which was a concern for their previous pregnancy. After undergoing hardships with their first child who did suffer from Beta Thalassemia disorder and needed repeated blood transfusions, they wanted to be cautious in their approach. PGD provided a miraculous aid to healthy conception. The couple underwent In vitro fertilization and genetic testing for embryos not only for the thalassemia gene but also for the Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) tissue type. This test ensures that the new born child will be not only be born free of illness but also can function as a stem cell donor for treating the sick child. With aid of PGD, A conceived and recently underwent a caesarean delivery of an unaffected healthy baby. The umbilical cord blood of this baby was collected for treatment of the baby’s brother. PGD of single gene disorders, combined with HLA matching, represents one of the most recent developments in reproductive medicine. This strategy has emerged as an excellent tool for couples at risk of transmitting a genetic disease. As discussed above, a great benefit of the technique is that it allows the selection of unaffected, compatible embryos that can function as stem cell donors for affected siblings. At delivery, cells from the newborn’s umbilical cord blood are collected and used to reconstruct the blood system of the affected sibling, a lifesaving measure: the availability of a HLA-compatible donor raises the chance of cure to over 90%. In a recent breakthrough at Fakih IVF, Abu Dhabi, PGD (preimplantation genetic diagnosis) has been used to identify rare cancer genes (BRCA-1 and 2) which lead to a 70-80 percent risk of breast cancer. Women have to undergo mutilating surgery for the removal of breasts at a young age to prevent cancer. This can be avoided by identifying the high risk gene in embryos and implanting only embryos with low cancer risk. Fakih IVF recently enabled one of five such PGD-undergone pregnancies, a remarkable milestone for reproductive health. PGD is a great development in the field of IVF and helps to prevent the negative effects of consanguineous marriages, which makes it an especially useful tool in the MENA region. It is also useful for carriers of sex-linked genetic disorders or chromosomal disorders (for example Down’s syndrome), women aged 38 and older, women who experience recurring pregnancy loss and women with repeated failed fertility treatment. It’s a revolutionary development in science and is here to stay.

A corporate troubleshooter (Kate Mara) is sent to a remote, top-secret location, where she is to investigate and evaluate a terrifying accident. She learns the event was triggered by a seemingly innocent “human,” who presents a mystery of both infinite promise and incalculable danger.

Based on a true story, War Dogs follows two friends in their early 20s (Hill and Teller) living in Miami Beach during the Iraq War who exploit a little-known government initiative that allows small businesses to bid on U.S. Military contracts. Starting small, they begin raking in big money and are living the high life. But the pair gets in over their heads when they land a 300 million dollar deal to arm the Afghan Military—a deal that puts them in business with some very shady people, not the least of which turns out to be the U.S. Government.

THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS

BEFORE I WAKE

THE WILD LIFE

In the years following World War I, Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender), a young veteran still numb from his years in combat, takes a job as lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, a remote island off the coast of Western Australia. As the island’s sole inhabitant, he finds comfort in the monotony of the chores and the solitude of his surroundings. When he meets the daughter of the school’s headmaster, Isabel Graysmark (Alicia Vikander), in the local town of Partageuse on the mainland, Tom is immediately captivated by her beauty, wit and passion, and they are soon married and living on the island.

In this supernatural thriller, Jessie (Kate Bosworth) and Mark (Thomas Jane) decide to take in a sweet and loving 8-year-old boy, Cody. Unbeknownst to them, Cody is terrified of falling asleep. At first, they assume his previous unstable homes caused his aversion to sleep, but soon discover why: Cody’s dreams manifest in reality as he sleeps. In one moment they experience the incredible wonder of Cody’s imagination, and in the next, the horrific nature of his night terrors. To save their new family, Jessie and Mark embark on a dangerous hunt to uncover the truth behind Cody’s nightmares.

From the over-exuberant parrot Tuesday to the snackobsessed tapir Rosie, from the persnickety echidna Epi to the acrobatic pangolin Pango, from the ditzy goat Scrubby to the commonsensical kingfisher Kiki and the always-cool chameleon Carmello, things are larger than life on a tropical isle that is pure wild animal paradise. Then Robinson Crusoe, a marooned human, arrives in the midst of a furious storm, and their lives are forever changed by this bewildering new “creature.” No matter their differences, castaway human and quirky animals embark on an hilarious new adventure, building the island’s first tree house and surviving together.

How did chicken achieve the culinary ubiquity it enjoys today? It’s hard to imagine, but there was a point in history, not terribly long ago, that individual people each consumed less than ten pounds of chicken per year. Today, those numbers are strikingly different: we consumer nearly twenty-five times as much chicken as our great-grandparents did. Collectively, Americans devour 73.1 million pounds of chicken in a day, close to 8.6 billion birds per year. How did chicken rise from nearinvisibility to being in seemingly "every pot," as per Herbert Hoover's famous promise?

Nathan is fluent in German and Polish, he is Semitic looking, and he proved his scrappiness at a young age when he escaped from the Polish ghetto. Now, the government wants him to take on the most dangerous assignment of his life: Nathan must sneak into Auschwitz, on a mission to find and escape with one man.

A Very Note-worthy Evolution A look back at Galaxy Note devices over the years As Samsung plans to introduce the latest addition to the Galaxy Note family with the launch of its all-new Galaxy Note7; we take a stroll down memory lane to revisit its extraordinary predecessors while touching upon some of their rather unique features and capabilities. From the original Galaxy Note that started it all in 2011 to last year’s Galaxy Note5, Samsung has continued to revolutionize the smartphone sector with stateof-the-art innovations, with every new model.

Galaxy Note

The first of the Note family was announced in November 2011. At the time it was the world’s first and largest smartphone screen with its 5.3-inch HD Super AMOLED display, bringing in the performance of a tablet while maintaining the convenience and portability of a smartphone. With the inclusion of the advanced S-Pen for the Galaxy Note’s touch screen, users were guaranteed a smartphone like never before, even coining the term ‘phablet’.

Galaxy Note II

With the introduction of the Galaxy Note II in October 2012, the boundaries of mobileproductivity were pushed ever further. The Galaxy Note II featured the application-rich ‘Premium Suite’ not only providing a more enhanced user interface but also unleashing a new era in self-expression and enabling content design like never before, cementing the phone’s status as the ultimate smartphone for on-the-go creativity.

Please introduce yourself to our readers: I’m Natasha Malik, a 29 year old, full-time Social Media Executive and part-time Make-up Artist. I’m one of four siblings. I hoard make-up, clothes and jewelry. I've always been into style and fashion, probably because my mother and father have always been well dressed. My eldest sister, Afsheen Malik, is a stylist so she really does bring the style element into our household; I guess my younger siblings and I started to adapt our own personal styles because of this. My mother and eldest sister aren't really fans of make-up. They're both beautiful and prefer a simple, minimalistic take on make-up. I, on the other hand, started off like this, until a close friend bought me an eye shadow pallet as a gift. My first thoughts were, 'I'm never going to use this', but as the palette sat on my dressing table mocking me for not knowing what to do with it, I decided to try and create bold eye make-up looks. All the experimentation was done on my two younger sisters, Siddhrah and Yusra, who are pretty much my life-size dolls.

Tell us about your education: I graduated in Media and Journalism from De Montfort University in Leicester, UK.

When did you know that you wanted to be a Make-up Artist? When my sisters and I attended events and weddings and I trialed different make-up looks on myself and my sisters, I began to get requests to do make-up for other people. At first, it started off as an opportunity to try my hand on different people, friends and family. As I tried working with different skin tones and skin types I became obsessed with creating a flawless looking base that didn’t look too heavy or cakey. This was my calling and I felt like I needed some good guidance on how to achieve that.

How long have you been a working professional and how did you get started in your career? At first I was a self-taught Make-up Artist and began working approximately 4 years ago. Then I realized that there are a lot of make-up professionals that aren’t certified and used this as an incentive to become certified myself.

and beautiful. I want my customers to hear ‘Wow, you look beautiful!’ not ‘Wow, your make-up looks nice.’ Their make-up shouldn’t be the statement; it should be synchronizing with the face, the outfit and the accessories. I love the strobing trend at the moment and love highlighting the centre of the face; I feel like it really helps diffuse the light and softens the structure of the nose and brings out the cupids bow. This looks great when you pair it with a bold lip colour.

As I have a full time job during the week, I needed a way to study make-up artistry in a way that could fit my schedule and was flexible. I began searching for intensive 1-2 day courses and found that most schools charged over £2,000 for their courses. This made me unhappy as I didn’t want to pay that amount of money, especially because I felt like all I wanted to do was elevate the skills I had already. I then searched for online courses and found one through a company called Smart Majority for approximately £30. Instagram make-up profiles. I think it’s important to stay on top of trends but adapt them to suit you.

Does everyone look better with make-up? A little goes a long way. I think a smooth flawless base alone can make you look more radiant. But if your skin is perfect and you don’t need to correct it, don’t. If you have plump lips and only want to wear lip gloss or lip balm, do that. I feel like everyone should do what feels comfortable for themselves. If you like wearing bold eyeliner to emphasize your eyes, do it!

What is in your personal make-up bag? On a daily basis my make-up is really simple. Usually, I wear a Kiko hydrating foundation, Nars Creamy Concealer, Mac Studio Fix powder, any pink or bronze blush and a lip tint. I like it to look minimal and last all day.

What are your must-have, all-time favourite make-up products? My favourite products would have to be MAC ochre paint pot as an eye shadow base; RCMA no colour setting powder for baking and setting under eye make-up; Natural Potions Eye Balm to rescue and prime the under eye area; and Real Technique brushes - they really do half of the work for you.

What products have you recently discovered and can’t live without? I’m loving the Morphe Brushes palette in 35T. It has amazing taupe shades that are so on-trend at the moment and I love a neutral palette; they help create really versatile looks.

What is your most important piece of beauty advice and/or make-up tip for women? Drink water! I’m sure it sounds like a cliché but it is really important to drink plenty in order to keep your skin cells looking plump and prevent dehydrated skin. The more hydrated your skin is, the smoother your base will be.

Today’s woman is busier than ever. What is the easiest/quickest way to turn a day/work look into something that works for a night out? Add a bold lip to a daytime make-up look to instantly make it wearable for the evening. I’d opt for red or pink, whatever makes you feel confident. Or, if you have more than 5 minutes, you could sweep a dark brown shadow on your lid and on your lower lash line to give you a quick

wearable smokey looking eye.

What has been the biggest challenge of your career? I think there are a lot of make-up artists out there so the market is very competitive at the moment and with the rise of YouTube and Instagram many girls feel that by watching tutorials they can become make-up artists themselves. I believe training is required, especially to learn techniques and understand how make-up products work in conjunction with each other. I have to ask, if you get trained by a celebrity make-up artist who has been in the field for decades, are the styles that you’re learning new? Are the looks you produce on trend? On the other hand, if you’re trained using course materials you get to experiment with products and techniques that you prefer to use, and build on your own skills by taking up more training as your progress in your career; you can be more versatile and not keep repeating the same prescriptive looks you were taught.

What are some of your other hobbies? I mentioned earlier I’m really interested in fashion and style. I love shopping and hitting the gym. It helps to energize me and keeps me motivated to do more with my time.

What are your future plans? Going forward I’d love to be able to take my make-up career to the next level and maybe produce a line of lipsticks and foundations that suite a range of Asian skin tones; but that really is a dream at the moment. Once I’ve established a good name for myself as a make-up artist, I’d like to hold seminars and classes to teach that ‘less is more’ to the desi community and show how these looks can be achieved.

What advice would you give to new Make-up Atists looking to make it in the industry? Practice your skills on anyone that will let you! Experiment with different techniques and try new products on yourself first.

Do you have a message for the team at CP Magazine? It’s great to see an organization promoting the desi community. It is inspiring to see that there are members of the community that want to build each other up instead of tear each other down.

Lemons, toothpaste & Co.: alternative ways to clean silver jewellery

Most of us have that special little jewellery box full of our favourite silver earrings, bracelets and rings! The thing is, we also feel a little sad looking at them as they slowly oxidise over time, losing their once bright sparkle. And that's when they usually stay in the box forever looking old and unwearable...until now! Helpling.ae, the leading online platform for household services in the Middle East, compiled some expert tips to bring your favourite jewellery back to its original sparkle! The best bit? You don’t even have to waste money buying expensive cleaning products, because you probably have most of the tools needed already in your kitchen cupboards! 078

AUGUST 2016

1. Lemons First up. Lemon. This clever fruit has a multitude of uses. Not only great in salads and juices – this little gem cleans your jewellery too! In other words, you can never have enough lemons in your fruit bowl. Without further ado, let’s start by simply adding a few drops of lemon juice to 1/2 a cup of water. Using a toothbrush, dip it into the juice and gradually start scrubbing away the oxidised parts of your jewellery to reveal a beautifully new looking piece of silver. 2. Baking Soda Baking soda is another winning ingredient you’ll most likely find in your cupboard. To get started, mix a 1/4 cup of baking soda with 2 tablespoons of water. Use a soft piece of material or cloth, dip it in the solution and start polishing the silverware, rubbing gently. When you have gone over all the dirty areas, run it under cold water and gently rinse off the solution. Then use a bit of kitchen paper to pat the jewellery dry. 3.Toothpaste Grab an old toothbrush, put a little bit of toothpaste on your jewellery piece and using the brush, softly scrub away the dirty areas. To bring back it’s full shine, just run a slightly wet cloth over the silver piece and removing any residual toothpaste. 4. White vinegar Get a cup and fill it half with water and half with white vinegar, mixing it well. Submerge your silverware into the solution and let it soak for about 2 hours. Then take your items out of the cup and run them under the tap to rinse off. Then pat dry with a little kitchen paper.

Baby Dragon's first feast in Postojna Cave Slovenian Tourist Board is delight to inform that all olm embryos in Postojna Cave, have successfully hatched last week. There are now 22 hatchlings and some of them have already started eating by themselves. They had their first baby dragon feast! With joy STO shares the IR-camera footage and some photos. These are most likely the only olm hatchlings that can presently be observed anywhere in the world. Proteus anguinus – this alien look-like animals live in the ice cold darkness of caverns of the Dinaric Karst and nowhere else on Earth. They are adapted to total darkness and have no eyes and no color pigmentation. They can live up to 100 years and can stay without food for incredible period of 10 years. They are blind. It is interesting that the larvaes do have eyes while in adult animals the eyes are grown over with skin and atrophy. To compensate this they have other senses that help them navigate and hunt in total darkness. Olms were once thought to be baby dragons. They are the only known cave amphibians and the largest cave-dwelling animals in the world. But unlike other amphibians the olm does not complete its metamorphosis from a larva living in water and breathing with gills into an adult breathing with lungs. It reaches sexual maturity as a larva and remains such its whole life. Nobody has ever seen reproducing Proteus in nature so far. River Pivka in Postojna Cave - the home of olms (credits Iztok Medja Postojna Cave)

OUR BABY DRAGONS ARE HUNGRY Although the hatchlings still have some yolk reserves left on their bellies, which they could survive on for a while longer, they are already having their food. We treated our oldest and largest hatchlings to a proper feast –delicious worms, to be exact four worms, one for each of the baby dragons. Next morning, there was only one worm left in the container. The infrared camera footage confirmed what we had been expecting quite impatiently, however, this was not a one-off hunger pang, in fact, the olms again feasted on some food. In terms of development this means that the connection between mouth and digestive tube was successfully established. This is one of the most crucial steps in early stages of their development. At first, some of the baby olms might get a bit confused about food, some are even a little afraid and flee from it. But in the end, when the hatchlings suddenly munch their way through the prey like fearsome dragons, everyone is more than satisfied and happy. 080

AUGUST 2016

FROM A PLASTIC ROOF TO A LABORATORY From the 64 hatched eggs, there are 22 young larvae, all of which are in Postojna cave laboratory, which was first used as an improvised controlled environment for the eggs that had to be moved away from the infected eggs. It was eventually turned into a proper laboratory, suited to the needs of the hatchlings and the biologists. In the laboratory is not only Postojna examining olms, but also learning from them. The scientist are well aware that the natural environment is best of all, a Petri dish have placed mud from one of the cleanest sections of the River Pivka into the container of one the larvae. Not only did the baby dragon like the mud – it was crawling and hiding inside of it – but it also made use of the Petri dish itself, as it crawled under it. Olms like being right next to stones as this makes them feel safe, therefore the team has started setting up some sterile glass hiding places.

KEEP YOUR FINGERS CROSSED! Although the fact that the hatchlings are eating has revealed that they are developing just the way they are supposed to, the scientist need to consider and wisely plan all further steps and the care for olm hatchlings. www.cpmagazine.net

Officine Panerai continues looking into its own past to relate fascinating new stories to its enthusiastic collectors. A new Luminor 8 Days Set – available in only 500 examples – contains two watches inspired by models created in the pre-Vendôme era, that is, that stage in the history of the brand running from 1993, the year of the first collection made for the public, and 1997, the year in which Panerai was acquired by Vendôme, part of the Richemont Group. In those years, a very small number of watch was produced and they quickly became highly sought after in the collector’s market. Notably, in 1996 Panerai made a few small series of watches commissioned by Sylvester Stallone. The new Luminor 8 Days Set takes two models originally created for the American actor: a Luminor Black Seal, here presented for the first time in a left-handed version, and a Luminor Daylight with an original, extremely rare white dial with blue markers and numerals. The two watches are supplied in a box inspired by those used for vintage Luminor watches, made of pear wood with a teak base and containing a model of the human torpedo (Siluro a Lenta orsa – slow speed torpedo), together with a rare publication about the military equipment of the special forces of the Royal Italian Navy, in which Panerai watches and instruments appear. The Luminor Black Seal Left-Handed 8 Days is the version with the winding crown and the lever device protecting it on the left side of the case of the historic Luminor Black Seal. The tradition of making watches for left-handers had already been started by Panerai in the 1940s, when some models were made in this way to enable the watches to be worn on a frogman’s right wrist, while the compass and depth gauge were worn on the left. The Luminor Case, 44 mm in diameter, is made of stainless steel coated with DLC (DiamondLike Carbon).

Amouage Launches New Silk Scarves Collection In Kuwait

Doha Bank Achieves Strong Performance Ratios

Be still, my beating heart! Rado expands its collection of open heart timepieces

His Excellency Sheikh Fahad Bin Mohammad Bin Jabor Al-Thani

International luxury brand, Amouage, has extended its product portfolio with the launch of a new collection of silk printed scarves in Kuwait. Complementing Amouage’s development of lifestyle products and following the successful launch of the leather goods collections, the beautiful, bespoke scarves have been designed in house by the Creative Director Christopher Chong and crafted by one of the finest silk manufacturers and printers in Como, Italy, the home of the finest quality silk weaving and printing in the world. David Crickmore, CEO of Amouage said “We are truly delighted to launch our new silk scarf collection. We have been working on the collection for over a year and to see it come to fruition is really exciting. We also intend to develop woven scarves and we have very high hopes that this launch will be the beginning of an entirely new category of business for us that we can extend further in the future.” The first Amouage silk scarf collection consists of exclusively printed, colourful designs inspired by the brand’s identity and are offered in two shapes – the traditional silk square 90cm x 90cm and a 170cm x 60cm shape that can also be worn as a stole. Printed on a luxurious silk twill fabric, each unique Amouage scarf features a bespoke play on the brand’s logo that encapsulates the exuberance in design, for which the brand has become known internationally. A special printing process ensures that both sides of the scarf, front and back have almost the same colour definition. Each scarf is hand cut to ensure the pattern is completely straight and symmetrical and seamstresses use silk thread to roll and hand stitch the hem around each scarf. “This is painstaking, highly skilled artistry and adds to the bespoke nature of each individual scarf. Even the labels are sewn on by hand and so this is an entirely hand-made product,” explains Crickmore.

TEST YOUR VOCABULARY On almost bare land, with few or no destructive insects or birds living there, nearly every seed which chanced to arrive, if fitted for the climate, would _______________ and survive. a. shrivel b. plummet

c. ignite d. germinate

Sometimes you want things to germinate, like the heirloom tomato seeds in your backyard garden. Sometimes what germinates is not desirable - like how joblessness, economic problems, and generations of anti-Semitism provided a fertile ground for Nazism to germinate in pre-war Germany. The word's roots are in botany, but it has grown, or dare we say germinated, to be used for any time something grows and develops.

d. To germinate is to grow or to develop. When a tiny seedling cracks through a seed casing and sprouts, it has germinated. The term is used for other things too, like when an idea germinates into a film or book.

SPECTRUM

It’s Gold! Congratulations to shooter Fehaid Al-Deehani on his Gold medal winning performance at the Rio Olympics.

Fehaid improved on the Bronze medals won at the Sydney 2000 and London 2012 Summer Olympics by winning Gold in the men’s double trap in Rio. Fehaid holds the only Olympic Gold medal ever won by Kuwait and although his win will be recorded as ‘independent’ following Kuwait’s Olympic body being suspended, his home country can be proud of his outstanding performance. After his historic win, Fehaid said “That was for my country, for the people who don't want us to participate in the Olympics, I'm showing them that we are here and we got the medal”. Fehaid beat Italian Marco Innocenti to take the Gold medal and his place in history. Kuwait can also boast a Bronze medal after Abdullah Al-Rashidi came third in the Men’s Skeet. Many congratulations to both Olympians.
