Sunny Grosso The Effect of Happiness on your Bottom Line As the most successful global companies continue to prove, it’s no secret that a happy employee is a productive employee and that happy employees equal happy customers.

Sunny Grosso, Co-founder of Delivering Happiness, a global workplace culture coach-sultancy [hybrid coaching + consulting] that uses the science of happiness to inspire meaningful happiness and elevate business results, has spent years studying the culture at Zappos and consulting with companies around the world in the matter. She describes happiness as ‘a range of positive emotions, from joy and pleasure to passion and purpose’ and says it has an impact on everything we do, from our mindset to our relationships to how productive we are at work. The happiness coach, culture expert and thought leader began her journey on a mission to answer one question: How do we create a different workplace? In this Q&A, Ms. Grosso gives us a sneak peek into this year’s Happiness Effect Conference, the importance of creating a culture of happiness and its impact on business in a simple way that makes human sense and business sense.

AUGUST 2017

What is the Happiness Effect Conference and why is it relevant for workplace happiness and wellness? In its 2nd edition, The Happiness Effect Conference, which has been developed to highlight the importance of Happiness and Wellbeing at work, will focus on developing positive attitudes, emotional wellbeing and fostering an environment of happiness as leaders, teams and organizations. An initiative by Hadi Clinic, the 1-day conference will comprise of a series of interactive sessions with some of the best Mental Health & Happiness Experts in the world who will share their wealth of knowledge and experience on positivity and wellness at work providing participants to adapt the skills and tools learnt and put it into effect in their organizations immediately. The conference will be held on 12th September 2017 and is organized by Vigor Events, co-organized by ALGAS Events & Delivering Happiness.

Can you share your own journey into the theme of Happiness at work and why it means so much to you? After following the formula, working hard at university and getting a good job, I found myself surrounded by grey cubicle walls and soul-deadened co-workers that only seemed alive when they talked about the weekend. They were at work in order to escape work. Was this really the success we were promised? I knew it wasn’t for me, so I went on a work crusade from restaurant manager to wellness researcher to key roles in multiple start-ups. My happiness rose initially with each new venture, but sooner or later I found myself working for the weekend as well. I questioned myself, and our approach to work, in many ways but I hadn’t found a better way. That is, until a young CEO gave me the book ‘Delivering Happiness’ which answered so many of my own questions. I was asked to join the founding team of consultants and realized I could use my own, checkered experience of work to change our larger experience of work. My mission began by studying Zappos, positive psychology and other companies successfully scaling culture. I knew it was not only possible, but important to create the kind of workplace where people are inspired to do their best, not just for the organization or a paycheck, but for themselves first. From here it could be sustainable.

Why is happiness at work so important to organizations? As the theme of happiness at work has become more popular and major companies are focusing on employees’ wellbeing, we have seen the positive correlation between happiness and business results increase and become commonly accepted. A shift in happiness can lead to a 300% rise in innovation, 50% increase in productivity and 147% higher earnings per share. With statistics like these, CEOs and leaders across the world overwhelmingly agree that culture and happiness are the new, and really the only sustainable, competitive advantage. Faced with the challenges of new technologies nearly daily, information overload, the most stressed out generations yet, and fierce competition where adaptability and innovation are the forefront of every CEO’s mind, the question is less why happiness at work is important, but more how. How do we create real happiness at work and realize the business results? Here, we’re talking about meaningful and sustained happiness, not the short-lived pleasures that happiness has been hijacked to mean today.

What is company culture and why is it important? Culture is the sum of the beliefs, values and behaviors that define how things get done. Simply put, it’s how we do what we do. It affects everything from what information is shared, to how meetings are run to who is promoted, and ultimately, how successful a business is. Companies that focus on culture see

three times the shareholder returns — that’s 580% higher returns and 22% higher profitability. The theme of happiness comes into play when we consider the simple formula: happy employees = happy customers = successful company (and more meaningful lives). The next question is usually, how? That’s where the science of happiness comes in. There is a massive body research from the past 20 years available to help our employees, teams and organization thrive. For example, purpose, or having meaning in life, is one element of happiness from the science. When we join a team or an organization, we are co-creating a shared sense of purpose. If alignment exists between employees, you can expect higher productivity and an elevated sense of accomplishment by members of the team. You see motivation beyond compensation, status or power kick in, which is far more sustainable as it is driven by emotion and heart.

What is Delivering Happiness doing to build cultures of Happiness in organizations across the world? When Tony released the book Delivering Happiness, it went from an underdog (a business book about happiness?) to a global hit. It gave voice to a flaw in our approach to happiness that many individuals, leaders and employers around the world already felt. It offered a different path, where the individual and the organization both win. After the book, we launched the company Delivering Happiness based on the demand to help people, companies and communities become happier and more successful with this approach. We saw time and time again that people show up to places they believe in, and continue today to help businesses uncover and align people’s beliefs to the organization’s, so they can do their best work, raising their personal success and that of the business, all from the intrinsic, self driven level. We’re now seeing some of the world’s largest organizations consciously designing culture and spending considerable resources to do so. Yet, the failure rate for culture change remains high at around 75%. That’s where we come in. With a simple roadmap any organization can use, and our unique coach-sulting approach, we’ve seen results like 30-year record sales, 60 to 600 applicants per month, and massive rollouts of happiness across government entities. I look forward to sharing these stories, along with our simple formula, some secrets to happiness, and a good dose of inspiration in September.

THE VOICE

Gill Sherry

J

ust over twelve months ago, I was due to see Tom Jones perform live in Abu Dhabi. I was looking forward to it immensely so was extremely disappointed when the gig was cancelled due to his wife’s ill health. Understandably, he abandoned his tour and returned to the UK where a short time later, she lost her brief battle with cancer. However, the Welsh singing star was soon back on the road and, learning he was to perform in my home country, I was quick to buy tickets. Sir Tom would be entertaining the crowd at Cartmel Racecourse, a horse racing venue in the Lake District, Cumbria. From my point of view this was definitely an event not to be missed. Not only would I finally get to see the legendary performer sing live, I would also enjoy a day at the races. Never having been to Cartmel before, I was keen to tick this particular race course off my list. The great thing about these summer race meetings is that you can take your own picnic (rather than paying an extortionate amount of money for either a greasy burger or a bland set meal, depending on your choice of ticket). So, armed with hampers, deckchairs and a whole host of other picnic paraphernalia, we made our way to the finish line. Surprisingly, there was plenty of room (most people had elected to pitch at the stage rather than the trackside) so we made ourselves comfortable and grazed on our feast whilst waiting in eager anticipation for the first race. The excitement was palpable and a flurry of activity accompanied the horses as they set off from the starting blocks. There’s nothing quite like the sound of hooves on the turf as they gallop down the home straight, cheered on by zealous spectators and the ever increasing volume of the trackside commentator. The Lake District is known for its inclement weather but thankfully it remained dry. The sun even forced its way through the clouds periodically, treating the race-goers to a burst of brightness to rival even the most colourful stable silks. After the fifth and final race, those of us who had settled near the 14

track gradually made our way towards the stage. Finding a decent spot was certainly not easy and we eventually settled for a patch of hillside looking down at proceedings. Still munching on our picnic, we patiently waited for Sir Tom to appear and took the opportunity to partake in a spot of people-watching. I must say, I was surprised at the diversity of his audience. Many were not even born when Tom Jones was at the height of his fame (myself including – just!) but all were equally keen to see him perform, impatiently stamping their feet and clapping their hands. My first impression when he took to the stage was the power of his voice. At 77 years of age he still had the ability to raise the hairs on the back of my neck. His vocal prowess was as impressive as it had ever been as he treated his audience to a string of hits, old and new. It’s hard to say which of his hits was my favourite - I sang along to most of them with equal vigour – but judging by the crowd’s reaction, Delilah was a definite front-runner. It’s Not Unusual and Sex Bomb were not far behind along with What’s New Pussycat and Green, Green Grass of Home. It’s fair to say he wasn’t as virile as he used to be - he covered very little ground on stage and sang some of his songs at a much slower speed than expected - but his audience wasn’t complaining. They sang, they danced and they cheered, before finally waving goodbye to the man they call ‘The Voice’. So what is it about Tom Jones that makes him so appealing? Undoubtedly, his popularity has grown since he first appeared on our TV screens as a judge on The Voice UK in 2012. This would certainly explain his appeal to a new, younger generation of music lovers. However, with a career spanning six decades it’s hard to argue with his success and it’s no surprise he’s still able to pull in the crowds at some of the world’s most impressive venues. Cartmel Racecourse may not be as stylish as Yas Island but what it lacked in elegance, it certainly made up for in charm. The surrounding countryside was nothing short of breathtaking and from my own point of view, not only did I finally get to see my favourite Welsh baritone, I also secured another tick on my racecourse wish list. Definitely a day to remember.

5 BASIC LIFE SKILLS EVERY CHILD SHOULD KNOW BY HIGH SCHOOL

S

ome parents love their children so much that they do almost everything for them. That’s ok though, right? Wrong! If we overly protect our children and do everything for them, we are crippling them. We are sending a strong message to them that we do not trust them and that they don’t have what it takes to take care of themselves. If we want to nurture our kids, cultivate their personalities and raise them to be happy and well-adjusted adults, we need to ease up on the over-parenting and teach them some basic life skills. ‘We parents, we are doing too much’, says Julie Lythcott-Haims, former dean of Stanford University and author of How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Over-Parenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success. ‘We have the very best of intentions, but when we over-help, we deprive them of the chance to learn these really important things that it turns out they need to learn to be prepared to be out in the world’. Now that you are ready to break free from over-parenting, here are the 5 skills your child needs to learn before entering high school: 1. Make a meal

‘By the time your kid is in high school, they really ought to be able to do everything related to their own care’ Lythcott-Haims says. While you (the parent) will still do most of the cooking, your child should know how to make a meal, even if it’s a real simple one. Teaching a skill like cooking helps you hit two birds with one stone: teach a skill and foster confidence!

2. Wake themselves up on time

‘By the time your kid is entering high school, you ought to have confidence they can wake themselves up and get themselves washed and dressed in clothing that's clean’ Lythcott-Haims says. ‘Too many of us are letting kids off. We're their alarm clock and then what happens? They're late for breakfast; they're late to school; and we drive them. All that teaches them is that we'll always be there to wake them up and drive them which is not true’. When your teenager learns to wake up on his/her own, we are also teaching accountability. Your teenager will learn that if he/she is late for school, then there are consequences to face.

3. Do laundry

We teach our kids basic hygiene so why not teach them how to take care of their clothes and personal belongings? Laundry is definitely one of those life skills usually over-looked by many but it is an important skill to learn and utilize.

4. Pack their own bag

‘We're always putting their stuff in their backpacks’, Lythcott-Haims says. ‘Oh, don't want you to forget your homework!' That backpack becomes a bag or a briefcase one day in the workplace, and they haven't learned that skill of being responsible for remembering their own stuff, doing that inventory every morning, 'What do I need? Wallet, keys, lunch, work, laptop.' When a child packs his/her own bag for school, he/she also learns to be responsible for his/her own learning; a simple task with a much bigger message.

5. Order at restaurants

Ordering at restaurants also teaches basic manners, like looking people in the eye, being polite, kind and respectful to the restaurant staff. The last thing I would want is for my child to feel entitled and even worse, to be disrespectful to others. As you continue your parenting journey remember this wonderful quote by Ann Landers: ‘It is not what you do for your children, but what you have taught them to do for themselves that will make them successful human beings’.

LAW AND SOCIAL MEDIA

S

ocial media platforms have become the world’s most popular and most used method of communicating, advertising and even contracting. From 2016, social media (such as Instagram, twitter, Facebook and snapchat) has been considered a ‘public place’ when it comes to article number 5 of law number 8. Therefore, any action committed on social media platforms would be a subject for criminalization. Also, law number 63 for the year 2015 relating to Anti Information technology crime states that social media is no different to actual life when it comes to penalizing what we do, write or post (including videos and pictures). So, the criminal law will be applied against all criminal actions that take place. For example, if someone tried to insult, blackmail, slander or threaten a person on social media, he would be penalized with imprisonment for a period not exceeding three years and fined between three thousand and ten thousand KD. The Article clearly points at the person using the information network or information technology to threaten or blackmail a natural person or juristic person in an attempt to force that person to undertake an act or to abstain from it. If the crime or threat is considered to be touching the dignity of a person, violating honor or defaming character or dignity, the penalty shall be imprisonment for a period of up to five years and a fine of not less than five thousand KD. Moreover, the laws have also discussed online banking and contracting which brings us to the very common question of "Is it safe to do contracting online?" Firstly, all emails are considered as trusted documents by the law, so if you received approval to sell an item through email then this email is actually a document that can be relied upon when it comes to judgment. Secondly, you have to be careful which site you're dealing with. There are some websites such as amazon, eBay and youbuy which are safe because they are globally authorized. Even companies like Mastercard, Visa, American Express and PayPal guarantee money transactions through those websites. My advice to everyone is to be careful when dealing online and to be responsible for what they write or say on social media because even people with fake accounts and hidden names could be captured and jailed. 18

MULTIPOTENTIALITE

Naseera Hoorzook

A

lmost all my adult life, I found myself not only multi tasking but also having such varied interests that I was often told I'm ‘all over the place’. At some point I began doubting myself, trying to urge myself to focus on one or two things and not allow myself any diversions in interest. In a world full of specialists I started feeling something wasn't right. What was wrong with me that after doing something for a while I couldn't see it becoming my forever, the be all and end all of my life? And people around me had been doing the same jobs for as long as I could remember. A sense of confusion, doubt and concern in my lack of specialty crept up on me and made me feel somewhat subpar or incomplete. That was until I heard a talk by the ‘multipotentialite’ Emilie Wapnick. I was so thrilled to have listened to her talk since she sounded so much like me, having experienced similar criticism and question in her fluttering interests until she gave it more thought and drew her own reassuring conclusions. Embracing the multipotentialite in you is freeing and also allows you to succeed. In coaching, we often explore the strengths and weaknesses of an individual. Then we delve into the weaknesses which bring us to realise even our weaknesses have positive attributes. Think about fear as a negative. It has a strength in that it protects us from what's out there internally or externally. Having fear is thus an inbuilt mechanism that helps us caution ourselves where necessary - a fight or flight response. Likewise, being a multipotentialite (a person who has constantly evolving interests) need not be something to doubt and loathe. Instead, being a multipotentialite is a special and unique attribute which allows one to fulfill the thirst and exploration of a variety of sciences, interests and bubbles of knowledge and people. What an enriching and wondrous thing multipotentiality is; full of adventure, challenge and fun. We live in a fast changing world. Where our university degrees may become obsolete, where jobs are scarce and creativity is sorely lacking. Where too many people remain on the peripheries and remain doing what they've always done, held back by fear and

20

AUGUST 2017

societal pressures that dictate they should loyally remain doing what they've always done and stick to it forever. Perhaps I always had it in me, but God knew that as an expat I needed to adapt fast to the changing lifestyles and norms, from country to country. Otherwise I could have spiralled downward onto a path or self pity, unable to do what I was trained at doing, feeling sorry for myself and being miserable looking at the many blocks ahead. Being a multipotentialite, these blocks pushed me to explore other avenues and carve new pathways. Perhaps being a parent changed something in you, where the previous job or past time would no longer work well with playing an additional role.Think of that someone you know who's had to think creatively and steer a new path completely. Their new path could have been a result of a retrenchment, change in family dynamic, moving to a new country and culture, or just the will to try something new, something they were passionate about and carried through. Are you prepare for a sudden change of events where doing what you know no longer works for you and the best way forward is to think out of the box, take the risk and try something new. You just never know what could be waiting for you; possibly an untapped version of yourself you never knew existed, in a new chapter in your book of life. What about lasting fulfillment, joy and doing things that truly make us happy? Think of the endless possibilities you have yet to test, the list of things you still want to explore and master; and trust that it's never too late to make that U turn on the road of your life. Don't be scared to tread on paths you haven't trod before. Dare yourself to make your dreams your reality, try your hand at your many talents and ideas. Grab some paper and begin to write all that interests you and the dream jobs you would do. Imagine that right now you could be doing anything under the sun. But maybe in a few months or a few years, those dreams may change. That’s ok. As long as you find joy and fulfillment in what you decide to do. Any maybe, just maybe, when that starts to taper down, you would know what your next journey involves.

SUMMER ACTIVITIES To Boost Your Child’s Mental Health

Summer holidays offer a much-needed break from the previous school year, and provide an excellent opportunity to recharge. At the same time, it can be difficult to find activities that are both physically and mentally stimulating. This is especially true in the UAE, where high temperatures limit the number of outdoor options. Dr Sarah Rasmi

Family Psychologist and Parenting Expert for social app Play:Date

O

ur daily routine changes in the summer. Many children shift from a structured schedule to a relatively unstructured one. Screen-time tends to increase, while outdoor play tends to decrease during the scorching summer months. These changes promote a sedentary lifestyle and limit mental stimulation. Dr Sarah Rasmi, family psychologist and parenting expert for social app Play:Date, shares five activities that are stimulating and fun for the whole family.

Get moving indoors

Research shows that people who are physically active have better outcomes than those who are not. Exercise boosts memory, brainpower, coping skills, happy hormones, and selfconfidence. At the same time, it reduces anxiety, depression, and stress. Soft play areas are the perfect choice for young children as they allow them to run and play in a controlled, cool, and safe environment.

Explore nature

Stimulate little minds by taking a trip to the aquarium or an 22

AUGUST 2017

indoor animal habitat. These excursions are both educational and fun for kids (and parents too!). There are so many wonderful options in the UAE and across the region.

Splash around Going for a swim is a great way to beat the heat. Practicing different strokes – or simply splashing around – is a fun way to get active.

Make a social date Schedule an indoor playdate for your little one and their friends! Are their buddies all out of town? No worries! Apps such as Play:Date help you connect with parents in the community whose children share similar interests to your child. This is a great way to build new friendships, boost confidence and communication skills, and promotes learning in children as young as six months.

Start a project Whether it’s planting a small garden or working on a complex Lego set, a project is a great way to teach children important life lessons and the value of discipline, determination, and effort. It also encourages patience and problem solving.

FrederickWillcottArtist

Frederick Wilcott “You need to practice, practice and practice some more”

Frederick Wilcott knows the importance of having a good art teacher. Having benefited from excellent guidance himself, he is now passing his knowledge to the next generation of artists. After all, the world can always use more art! Please tell us about yourself, who you are as an individual and what you are currently doing:

Was there any particular instance in your life that brought on your love of art from such a young age?

Well, first and foremost I am a professional artist. I work in many different mediums and genres from drawing and painting to sculpture. But my real love is abstract expressionist painting in mixed media. I am also a fine arts educator from early childhood level through to adults. I have been an arts educator since 2000. I feel it is vitally important that artists like myself find a way to educate students in some way, be it through formal schooling, workshops or as a mentor. If artists do not pass on what they know then arts will stagnate. Currently I work daily in my studio here in Kuwait with works on paper and canvas. I have been exhibited locally here at the Den Gallery, along with other great local artists. I am also a full time arts teacher at a local private school teaching grades 4-12 in all genres from drawing to sculpture to ceramics.

Well, my family was a big help. My parents and sisters are very creative people and I was never dissuaded from making art. There was always an atmosphere of creativity in our home. My father encouraged me to go to museums to see work of all styles and as a child I absorbed this into my being. I had an early understanding that art is a part of the human condition. We have to make it. It’s part of every culture on earth reaching back more than 10,000 years. I was never told that I should choose an occupation in more lucrative fields like medicine or business. I was told that if art is where I want my interest to go, then that’s fine and to pursue it wholeheartedly.

Tell us about your education: My education in arts really began as a young boy. I loved to draw and paint and when we had art class in elementary and middle school it was always my favourite subject. I graduated from the American School of Kuwait in 1988. During my four years there I was very fortunate to have an excellent art teacher who made sure in our curriculum that we worked in as many mediums and genres as possible. She recognized that I had a level of skill and creativity that, with a little help, could be pushed and fostered so that it could be a career path in itself. In my final year she found many art colleges for me to choose from and helped me to find one that was suitable for my needs. I am a graduate with distinction from the California College of the Arts in San Francisco/Oakland in my home state of California. Studying there was a great experience. I had instructors who were giants in their respective styles from urban/graffiti, photo realism, abstract expressionism and post-modern figural. I learned a lot from them and that has helped me in my own work as well as how I instruct others. Some of the things they said did not affect me at the time, but I mentally held on to their words. Now, almost 20 years later those ideas are finding their way into my work and in the advice I give to students young and old.

24

AUGUST 2017

How and when did you come to Kuwait? I came to Kuwait in 1984 at the age of 14. My father, like most Westerners, was transferred here with his company. When I arrived, I had never been abroad before so Kuwait and its culture was the first time I encountered a completely different way of life. I never felt intimidated or afraid. I met neighbourhood kids where we first lived in Yarmouk. We all loved football so we had a common ground for friendship. Then at the American School I quickly made friends that I still have to this day. The experiences I had growing up here stayed with me even when I returned to the US. I always wanted to come back here even after university. Finally, fate made that a reality in 2014 and here I am again.

For those who have a hard time understanding abstract art, what is it? This is simultaneously a simple yet complex question to answer. Arshile Gorky, the Armenian-American painter, I feel summed it up best when he said ‘Abstract art is the emancipation of the mind. It is an explosion into unknown areas’. Abstract art is a way of painting that is limitless. There is no one style because there really aren’t the academic rules of the past in art today. It is for me the only way to work. All the elements of art put together in very complex or equally simple ways make for great abstraction. This is why artists like Picasso,

www.cpmagazine.net

25

Kandinsky, Miro and so many others are all still considered incredible and valid. They all worked in realism, but eventually they wanted to say something else. Just merely painting something to make it look real wasn’t satisfying enough. They and abstract painters today, want to show you what is going on inside our minds. We want you to look at how materials are used, the marks we make, feelings we evoke by our colour choices or shape choices, our line qualities. Sometimes very bold and sometimes very subtle abstraction requires the viewer to forget reality and come with us on a visual journey.

Why did you choose abstract as your creative style of choice? Well in essence I became bored working realistically. It wasn’t satisfying for me anymore to just make something representational. Viewers liked the work, but for me, on the inside I felt as if I were just making pretty post card pictures that didn’t express any feelings or possibilities other than what they showed on the surface level. As one of my instructors said, you must give viewers a lot to look at, a lot to consider. Something representational is fine in and of itself but it cannot be something more, whereas abstraction gives the artist the freedom of going in limitless directions. As artists, we can only hope that the audience can make that mental leap with us; to come with us on this journey of seeing differently. It is a struggle, to be sure. Many viewers feel as if there must be a hidden message or perhaps they’re being fooled. Letting go of the need to know exactly what you are seeing is difficult for many people and I understand that. But it’s like Magritte’s painting of the pipe, which of course is not abstract in form but in idea. He literally says in French, ‘This Is Not A Pipe’. Of course it’s not! He wants you to get that it’s colours and lines merely shaped into a form. Similarly of Jasper Johns’ paintings of the American flag. Yes, in just seeing it, it is a flag. But conceptually it’s just a colour/line pattern of design and that is what he wants you to get.

How has your style changed over the years? Did the Kuwait influence make any major changes to your style? Well, as I said I wanted to make a style shift from realism to abstraction. Like most artists I wanted to grow and being in Kuwait affected that shift. I was visiting Kuwait in 2011 and I was talking with an old friend about my dissatisfaction of my work. He simply advised for me to change completely, make a blank slate and go in a different direction. I suppose because I was inside a bubble of my own making that I did not think to do this. On one level I was afraid that I would lose the audience that admired my realistic style but life is about taking risks and chances so I returned to my studio in the US and completely changed. No sketches, no careful renderings, no looking back. I just jumped in, feet first and went for something new.

How and where do you find your inspiration? That’s a good question. Many times it feels like any other business or job you are into for yourself. It’s an internal feeling of ‘I should get something good done today’. That sounds rather mundane but once I begin my thoughts start to flow and it becomes the usual exciting, risk taking adventure it always is. Sometimes it’s actually competitive like athletics. I see another artist make something really fantastic and my ego kicks in and I say to myself ‘I can do something better’. Other times, it is literally like a lightning bolt; an idea, a rush to get to the studio, get the materials prepared, lay down the initial drawing. It’s a very mad rush kind of thing!

What is your creative process like? Well it goes along with how I am inspired really. If it’s just beginning a piece of work for a job I take my time preparing the surface, be it paper or canvas, and laying out the tools and materials I plan to use, all the while listening to music to get a feeling or a groove for when I finally jump into the work. But more often it begins with picking up a thread from a previous idea or a photograph I took. I love photography, particularly close ups of textures, patterns and discarded things but put in a non-representational composition. I don’t necessarily attempt a recreation of that thing but I try to pick up on why it interested me. Once I am in the flow of the piece or series I am working on it is the genuine joy of art making. Working from instinct and intuition; rapid fire of what colours, marks, textures, types of edges, inclusion of text or numbers, everything! I know when it’s going the way my gut tells me is right and that is what I listen to. I don’t answer any phones or messages. I can’t stand interruptions during my work time because I might lose the pulse of what I’m feeling. This is why I’ll work for 8-10 hours without food or a break of any kind. It really is the joy and passion of working that is the art. The finished piece is a by-product of that effort. If a viewer likes it that’s great, but I always wish they could have seen the piece come to life.

Who have been some of your biggest influences? Well when I was a younger artist I suppose the big names like Van Gogh, Turner, Whistler, Picasso, Magritte, Miro, Braque, just to name a few. But I never really wanted my work to look like theirs at all. However, I admired their works and their lives making it through to be accepted as working artists. During art school years I really began to love the works of Jasper Johns, Sam Francis, Philip Guston and Giorgio Morandi. I also really began to love the lore of how Americans in post World War II really took the nexus of the art world and repositioned it firmly in New York City. It had been in Paris for too long and was stagnating there. I 26

because they aren’t limited; they are game to try any material, as long as they’re having fun and feel in a safe environment they enjoy it. It’s great to show them things they have never seen before. In many ways it’s like being a magician because no-one else they know can do what I do. I have influenced kids who are now grown and are still in contact with me. Some went on to careers in the arts and some took art courses in university because of my influence on them as children. I’m very proud of that. Adults are fun to teach as well, but often require more coaxing and reassurances. Somewhere in their life insecurity affected them. Maybe a teacher, friend, parent or classmate told them their art was not good and that stays with a person. The beauty of abstraction is that it isn’t necessary to be able to draw or paint. The only requirement is the willingness to try. The most difficult thing is knowing that I can really only teach students how to use the materials. I can show you my examples along with examples from art history and I can tell you how to create but in the end, I can’t teach creativity and intuition on what will make good art. That must come from within the student and unfortunately, not everyone possesses that. Just like not everyone can be good at math or science. I suppose as close to teaching creativity I can get is to establish an atmosphere of the feeling of safety to try anything. Knowing you are in a place where there is freedom to try new things is very liberating for the student.

How would you describe the art scene in Kuwait? Well I suppose I have to say that I’m happy there is an emerging art scene happening here now. It’s encouraging. I’ve seen some really interesting work at Den Gallery, The Hub and Dar Al Funoon. I remember in the 1980s there really wasn’t anything happening here. If you weren’t painting dhows, camels, falcons and portraits you had little chance. But that makes sense, it’s what people know and part of the culture. I remember living in Nevada in the US and every gallery was wall to wall horse and cowboy art. It drove me mad because it wasn’t even very good and people were paying thousands for it. Nonetheless, it is great that there are galleries here now in which people can see a really mixed variety of styles. But I do feel there is a major problem. There is a trend in the Gulf as a whole of repetition in art. I see lots of artworks that are not quite copy/paste but fairly close to it. I don’t know why that is. I’ve talked with other artists about this and they see it too. There is plenty of talent here and quite enough money to get trained by the best. Maybe it’s just because the Gulf countries are still in the growth phase of arts culture but I feel that as more and more people go beyond the Gulf and see what’s out there, they can return with good ideas and create new and better art. It’s an exchange of ideas. Not simply buying and bringing it back but influencing younger artists here to think beyond what they see here. They must find their own voice and push it to the limits and further. Another thing that the arts culture here in Kuwait needs is a culture of critique and review. Major newspapers, journals and magazines in the West have art critics that go to exhibitions and review them for an audience to read. Just as theatre, films, music, literature and restaurants are reviewed and critiqued so should art. No artist wants to have their work written about poorly, but on the other hand just saying that work is ‘good’ or ‘nice’ is not helping the artist nor the audience they are trying to reach. If an artist is not constructively critiqued he/she is living in a fantasy bubble and perhaps won’t grow to achieve new and better ideas. In the real art world not everyone is going to like you and be polite and kind with their interpretations of what you do. It can be a rough business. I can remember in art school we had an instructor who was just savage in his critique of student work. We lived in fear of this man and the humiliation he would rain on student work. However, over time we realized that his comments were made to actually help us; to make us go back into our studios and challenge our skills and intellect. That is when artistic growth occurs. For some artists it was paralyzing. For others it was a shock to the system and spurred new and better ideas.

What is your favourite museum or art gallery and why? That’s a difficult question because I’ve been very lucky to go to most of the major museums in places I’ve travelled. I have been to some really stellar galleries around the world, particularly the Stephen Wirtz Gallery in San Francisco. I think I’d have to say the Prado Museum in Madrid is my current favourite. My wife and I toured its collection recently. It was a truly amazing experience to see so many of the great works that I’d only seen in textbooks or slides my whole life. I really enjoyed seeing up close the way Goya painted. I stood in front of his work ‘The Third of May’ for at least an hour. It was so moving, such an example of brilliant painting. The colours, tones, line work, expressions on the faces were just brilliant.

If you could give an aspiring painter (who wants to be a professional artist) any piece of advice, what would it be? Never, ever, ever focus or get into art for making money and fame. It is not and should never be the focus of what you do. The making of art is why you do it. You focus on the practice. Like a professional athlete, the more you practice, the more you do, the better you will be. And be prepared for hard times. Be prepared for rejection. Be prepared that someone with less creativity and talent will get noticed before you. Galleries are a business and they promote who they think they can sell. It seldom has anything to do with how talented, creative or innovative you are.

Your message for us at CP magazine: I want to say thank you for the opportunity to present myself and my work to an audience that may not know who I am and what I am doing in my studio. I hope to exhibit more of my work here in the near future as more and more galleries get to know me. It has been a great experience to answer these questions and I hope I encourage someone yet to try abstraction to give it a go. Find a workshop, take a course in Europe or just try on your own. You never know, you may find you love it and want to do it more and more. Our world can always use more art to look at. Thank you very much. 28

THOU SHALT NOT SPIT!

D

espite the many street cleaners in Kuwait, our roads and pavements are still littered with debris. Food wrappers, cigarette packets and plastic bottles are often thrown from car windows or just dumped on the beach by thoughtless individuals. The impact of this waste on the environment cannot be understated and it’s a topic I have written about before. However, there’s something else on our streets that causes great concern – saliva. Few things are more disgusting than someone else’s spit. All too often I’m forced to dodge a suspicious looking glob when out walking in Kuwait. I’ve also been unfortunate enough to witness the transfer of spittle from mouth to footpath – and it’s not pleasant. Aside from the obvious potential to spread germs, where are their manners? Basic pleasantries such as ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ are taught from an early age along with ‘thou shalt not speak with your mouth full’ and ‘thou shalt not pick your nose’. I’m pretty certain ‘thou shalt not spit in public’ is another essential on the list of etiquette ‘dos and don’ts’. So why do so many people think it’s acceptable? Kuwait is obviously a multi-cultural country and home to countless expats from all over the world. I’m aware of the fact that what may be considered normal to one race, may not necessarily be acceptable to another. In such circumstances, surely it’s best to adopt the ‘when in Rome’ policy. Kuwait is a sophisticated, high income state and, as such, commands high standards and ethics. Those living in the country should therefore respect its standing and behave in a manner reflective of its moral principles. So why do people spit? When asking this question, we are quick to blame professional footballers. This is a long

30

AUGUST 2017

debated subject with no satisfactory conclusion. The reason (or excuse) designed to justify the constant spitting on a football field is the build-up of spittle generated by long periods of high-intensity activity. This is a natural occurrence which cannot be prevented and can only be dealt with by the age-old dilemma of ‘spit or swallow?’ But football is not the only sport to induce this physical quandary. Rugby players are subject to the same levels of activity and endurance but they are rarely seen spitting; certainly not to the same extent as footballers. Similarly, tennis, squash and hockey evoke the same consequence but not the same solution. Perhaps it’s merely the TV coverage which leads us to believe that footballers spit more than other sportsmen and women. The level of investment in football coupled with its worldwide following means that the players are constantly on our screens. Maybe we’re jumping to the conclusion that footballers spit more; perhaps it’s just perception rather than fact. I think not. Whatever your thoughts on the spitting habits of professional footballers, it’s obvious that children are going to copy them. Kids idolize their favourite players. They look up to them; want to play like them; want to be them. But the very first thing they do is imitate them - not good from a spitting point of view – and once they get in the habit of spitting, they’ll probably never stop. The sight and sound of someone clearing their throat in public is undeniably disturbing, particularly if you happen to be eating at the time – something that’s happened to me on more than one occasion. There really is no excuse for it. Whether you hear it, see it or step in it, it’s unpleasant and it’s unnecessary. We all know the rules for sneezing: Catch it. Bin it. Kill it. The same applies to spitting. And if you can’t catch it, swallow it.

“Believe in your dreams, no matter who you are or where you come from”

Rhea Jacobs was as surprised as anyone when she was chosen to represent Marc Jacobs Beauty on a global scale. But the Dubai based beauty blogger has long since learned to believe in the extraordinary; and being an ambassador for the luxury beauty brand was simply confirmation that no dream is impossible.

Hi, please introduce yourself to our readers: I’m Rhea Jacobs, an artist and content creator, based in Dubai. Tell us about your education: I graduated last October with a BA Hons in Fashion Design. How and when did you come to UAE? I’ve lived in Dubai all my life, having completed my 34

schooling and university here. Dubai is home. How and when did your interest in makeup and beauty develop? It was a very organic realization; I’m basically an artist who is in a constant search to express her art. This usually transpires either through fine arts, beauty or fashion. What was the first beauty product you ever bought? That would be a bright red lipstick without a doubt! I’ve always been obsessed with that colour.

What are your top 3 picks for beauty products? 1- Hands down the Marc Beauty Remarcable foundation – the intensity of that pigment is beyond amazing! 2- Marc Beauty Coconut setting spray. 3- The coconut primer. Is there one beauty trend you regret trying? Honestly, I don’t truly regret any trend I’ve tried. It’s all about learning and perfecting it. Tell us about your experience with the AAVVA’s Frida Kahlo Project collaboration? Frida Kahlo is a strong artist force. I admire her for her raw ability to express through art (this is one of the most difficult things to do). For us to channelize her unique aesthetics into the ethos of the collection was truly sensational as it curved past our safe boundaries. I love that! It truly makes you stronger and a better artist than you were before. How confident were you that you would be able to give the results AAVVA was expecting? Right from our first meeting everyone was on board to deliver the best we could cohesively and to reciprocate the strong aura Frida had through this piece of art we were delivering. What special preparation did you do before the final day of the event? Did you do any research about the life of Frida Kahlo? I’m a fine art student so I was aware of Frida and her magnificent work since my school days. I just wanted the event and shoot to be as organic as possible. My main focus was to deliver the aesthetics of Frida Kahlo.

How did you feel winning the Mark Jacobs competition? It was truly a surreal experience. I’ve learnt so much within that short period of time. It was such a beautiful experience meeting all those talented people from around the world; and meeting Marc himself. It just goes to show that no dream is impossible. What are the most enjoyable aspects of beauty blogging? I don’t specialize entirely in beauty blogging. It’s more about creating content around the areas of fashion, art and beauty. The most enjoyable aspect of this process would truly be expressing art through so many mediums. What are the least enjoyable sides and how do you deal with these? When you continuously produce content you sometimes get a creative block. I immediately overcome this by painting. It helps me refresh and recharge my creative side.

Did you personally like the collection? What was your favourite piece from the collection? I loved it! Ahmad & Vincenzo, the founders of AAVVA, truly delivered the aesthetics of Frida Kahlo through each piece. The details and silhouettes expressed strong aesthetic stance and overall stunning pieces. My favourite would be the Floral Embellished corset with the ballroom skirt dress. What do you feel are your biggest achievements? Ask me this question in 3 years time! Right now I feel I’m paving the way to my ultimate goals and enjoying the journey along the way. What is the best piece of advice that you have ever been given? My mother always says ‘Chase your dreams no matter how impossible it may seem’. What are your plans for the future? To work until I no longer have to introduce myself in the world of fashion and beauty. Your message for us at CP magazine: My message to your readers would definitely be to believe in your dreams, no matter who you are or where you come from.

If you could describe yourself in five words, what would they be? Daughter, Artist, Creative, Dreamer and.... you fill in the rest!

SHADES OF BLUE

T

he 2017 spring/summer runway was varied, from natural bare looks to more eccentric looks. Genius makeup artist, Pat McGrath, designed the makeup of some of the most prestigious catwalks of the season. Eyes were the focus and blues were the favorite shades, from pastels to electrics. Victoria Beckham’s show was amazing and the makeup a success, introducing products from her second collaboration with Estee Lauder.

HOW TO GET THE LOOK lApply a good eye primer lLine your upper lash line with a black or brown powder pencil to define the eye (a dark purple pencil does

the job for green eyes), or black eyeshadow with a thin brush for more intensity. lAdd a strong layer of the dark blue shade with your finger or with a flat brush on the eyelids close to the lash lines and around them, then blend it towards the brow bone with a clean brush. lDraw a soft line of the blue shade across the lower lash lines. lTo finish the look, apply a couple of layers of black mascara. lLeave your eyebrows ‘au naturel’. lA little highlight on your cheekbones and cupid’s bow is enough lMatch your blue eyes with a dewy bronzed skin and a glossy nude lip to close the look. 38

HOUSEWIVES' ECZEMA

H

ousewives' eczema is a type of hand eczema named for its frequent occurrence among housewives. In particular, it affects mothers who regularly engage in a wide range of chores that involve putting hands in water. The most common factor leading to this dermatitis is repeated exposure to, and chronic irritation from, water and synthetic detergents. Housewives' eczema, unlike other types of eczema, is not normally accompanied by itching. However, the affected skin at the fingertips may become thinner and show redness and scaling. As this disorder advances, it may result in cracking skin, pain and bleeding. Housewives' eczema commonly appears on the tips of the first, second and third fingers of the right hand due to more frequent use. In severe cases, it progresses down the fingers to the palm. It can lead to fungal infection of fingernails and secondary infections, causing pustules and pain in the fingernails. Housewives' eczema also frequently affects those with a history of atopic dermatitis. Many patients diagnosed with this dermatitis are found to be allergic to rubber products, perfume and metal. Their hands become red and swollen and papules form when exposed to such allergens, interfering with treatment. Housewives' eczema is a contact dermatitis resulting from a combination of causes. The condition of the epidermis, the exposed regions of the skin, the age of the patient and the environmental factors (temperature and humidity) all play instrumental roles. Although the skin is protected by a thin layer of fat that is also highly resistant of bacteria, when 40

achieve the most amazing body transformations do so by reaching a series of progressive, attainable goals. If you would like help in determining what an appropriate, attainable goal would be for you, then simply reach out to us. We’d be happy to help. Don’t give up too quickly. Keep striving and the results will come.

Get Fit Step #3: Make it CONVENIENT Are you straining to include your chosen exercise routine in your life? If your exercise time isn’t a seamless part of your daily life or if it causes too much of a strain and headache to accomplish, then you won’t stick with it. Find a time, a place and a modality of exercise that is as convenient as possible so you can be faithful to Get Fit Step #1 by staying consistent. Make exercise part of your routine. Don’t stray back to your old habits.

Get Fit Step #4: Find something you LOVE

Similar to Get Fit Step #3, finding a modality of exercise Let’s be realistic here, you aren’t going to lose 20 pounds that you LOVE is key to making this a permanent part in a week. That’s not an attainable goal! Those who of your life. You may never love swimming because you hate getting your ears wet; or you may never love biking because you’ve always struggled with balance. If you’re straining to get through a modality of exercise that you loathe, then you won’t stick with it. It’s best to move on to something different that you would enjoy more. Note for exercise-haters: If deep down you consider yourself an exercise hater, then DO NOT take this as a free pass to forego exercise altogether under the guise of not loving it. Part of becoming fit for life is learning to find a type of exercise that you can learn to love.

Eman AlAbdulghani

“Experienced guidance is the best support system of all When it comes to starting a new business, appropriate mentorship can mean the difference between success and failure; something Small Business Consultant, Eman AlAbdulghani, is keen to point out. So why is a mentor so important and what are the secrets to a successful startup?

Please introduce yourself to our readers: I am a startup and small business consultant. I’m also the CEO and founder of BloominglifeGlobal for business incubations and of Alfay Group. I am passionate about entrepreneurship and women empowerment.

Tell us about your education: I hold a Bachelors in Accounting and a Masters in Business Administration plus a Diploma in Investment Management.

50

AUGUST 2017

Can you walk us through your career path? After 12 years experience in the banking sector as an investment manager I joined the government sector as a financial specialist. More recently, I am collaborating with National Fund of Kuwait as an entrepreneur consultant.

Did you have any role models when growing up? Well, I think many in this world have an inspiring story to learn from but I think as a woman, Oprah Winfrey has always been a role model due to her tough childhood and the journey of her life with wonderful charity work.

What does your current role entail? Currently I am focusing on business consultation. I am specialized in startups and growing small business. In my workshops I help entrepreneurs to turn their ideas into a startup and grow their business. I am also collaborating with National Fund of Kuwait in mentoring and exploring entrepreneurship programs.

How do juggle between your professional and personal life? It’s all about time management and how to create a balance in life. This is really important for a successful entrepreneur.

What has been your proudest moment so far?

best support system of all.

How do you define Business Networking and why do you feel it is important? Communication and strong presence in the entrepreneurial ecosystem are productive approaches which will help entrepreneurs along their way to build strong relationships with others and in field of interests. Also, it helps them create and develop ideas and meet potential investors. Some of them might bring you opportunities, advice and inspiration. It’s really powerful in many different ways.

What are some of your hobbies? Reading, writing and sports.

The moment that I took a decision to quit my job and start my own business.

What were some of the biggest challenges you encountered while working as a business consultant?

What’s one of the most rewarding experiences you’ve had as a business coach?

Building credibility was the most challenging thing. Building reputation is a great asset for a consultant but when you first get started you will rely only on your experience in your past professional work and some personal skills that you have. It’s a long road to build a reputation for yourself. It needs so much dedicated time and commitment.

I was able to get to know people in depth and watch their business grow. There was an entrepreneur who was a mom and who had many difficulties in her life and with her startup. She ended up losing her money. After several sessions with her she managed to overcome her fears and start again and turned her startup into a successfully running business.

What do you do to relax in your spare time? I make sure to spend it with my family and go to gym.

Why is having a coach so important, especially for small business owners? Research and surveys prove that having a mentor is important for success. They help you to survive longer in business and to overcome many obstacles and problems you might face, especially in startups. Mentorship is one guaranteed way to gain experience from others. You gain network opportunities and reassurance.

What is the biggest mistake you see new entrepreneurs make? Expecting success right away. In reality you have to be ready to face many obstacles and it takes a long time to grow a business. It takes even longer time to make money from a business. Another thing is ignoring your true passion. If you are just going for money you will never be a successful entrepreneur

What are your three top pieces of advice for anyone wanting to start their own business? First, be passionate about what you do. You are going to devote a lot of time and energy to starting a business and building it into a successful enterprise so it’s really important that you truly, deeply enjoy what you do. Second, write a detailed business plan. Third, don't do it alone. Find a mentor when you are starting a business. Experienced guidance is the

What are you currently working on? I do writing, especially business articles. I am currently working on a project for women entrepreneurs and will reveal it soon!

What are your plans for the future? I have many plans and dreams in my mind; mainly to grow my business.

What is your favorite quote about entrepreneurship? The best way to predict the future is to create it.

Your message for us at CP magazine: Thank you for this opportunity. It’s great to see you on the top list of Kuwaiti magazines. Wishing you all the best.

Finally, do you have any final words of wisdom for our readers? If you don't build your dream someone will hire you to build their dream. Act now and create the life that you always wanted.

Top Five for

Tallinn

Jim West

Often dubbed the ‘Silicon Valley of Europe’, Tallinn happens to be the headquarters for NATO Cyber Defense Centre of Excellence, European Union IT Agency, and many other startups. Yet don’t let all of the high tech jargon fool you, as this city has more to offer than technology. 56

AUGUST 2017

1. the MUST see... Two words for you – Old Town. Tallinn's Old Town is one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is almost always something happening here and no visit to Tallinn is complete without going here. http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/822 2. the MUST eat… If you desire fine dining look no further than Restoran Pegasus. Start with their bread and end with their chocolate cake dessert that has coffee syrup and caramel. https://www.facebook.com/RestoranPegasus

4. the MUST stay… Less than a 10 minute walk away from the Old Town area is the luxurious Swissotel. This Five Star Hotel is the tallest building in the city and rooms have views of Old Town and the Baltic Sea. Take a dip in their heated pool and be sure to try their steam room and sauna. http://www.swissotel.com/hotels/tallinn

3. the MUST shop… If wooden spoons, onion jams, leatherworks and feeling like you have transported back in time to medieval days suits you then head down to the OldeHansa Shoppe. The staff dress in medieval fashion and there is also a restaurant where you dine as folks did way back when. http://www.oldehansa.ee

5. the MUST do off the beaten path… Just head to the pier and hop on a ferry to Helsinki, Finland. The locals do this regularly to buy cigarettes as these are cheaper in Finland. The ride one way is around 3 hours and there are plenty of ferries going back and forth all day long. Two cities in one visit! https://www.tallink.com/routes

YOUR NUTRITION FOR A PERFECT SUMMER

S

ummer time and the living is easy. That is until sweating outdoors causes you to develop health problems such as dehydration, skin sensitivities and other digestive and heart related maladies.

The good news is there are some foods that will help your body look and feel its best during the hottest time of year. Below are my favourite picks for this summer:

Tomatoes Slicing 1 cup of raw tomato for your lunchtime salad gives you as much as 40 percent of your recommended daily intake of vitamin C and 20 percent of your daily vitamin A all for just about 35 calories and zero fat. Tomatoes are a good source of vitamins A, C and E as well as folate and potassium. And in addition to being packed full of vitamins and minerals, studies have also found tomatoes may be antioxidant, antithrombotic, anti-inflammatory and, potentially, anti-cancer powerhouses. They have heart-protective qualities and they help lower cholesterol levels. On top of all that, while there’s no question that sunscreen should be your first line of defence against the sun, eating tomatoes could give you a little extra protection: consuming more lycopene - the carotenoid that makes tomatoes red - may protect your skin from sunburn.

Leafy greens Spinach and Swiss chard are all in season throughout the summer months, as are lettuce and salad greens such as arugula, red and green leaf lettuce, romaine and watercress. Greens are full of the cellprotecting and repairing antioxidants vitamins C and A and iron, as well as B vitamins and fiber. They also contain a lot of water, which will help keep you hydrated. When it comes to eating your greens, you really can't go overboard - they're low in calories, low in sodium and are naturally cholesterol-free. Not only do they make a great salad - whether as a side or star of the meal - don't be shy about throwing them into a blender for a green smoothie.

Iced tea Put down your sugar-laden soda and pour yourself some tea. Green tea is packed full of healthy antioxidants. Iced or hot, green tea may help reduce your risk of all sorts of health problems including, diabetes, stroke and heart disease. According to a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, people who drink about 3 cups of green tea daily had a 46 to 65 percent decrease in their risk of developing hypertension. Not a fan of green tea? Regular tea will do as well. Studies show if you drink tea regularly, you may lower your risk of Alzheimer’s and diabetes, plus have healthier teeth and gums and stronger bones. How? Tea is rich in a class of antioxidants called flavonoids. Regardless of the variety - black, green, oolong, white or herbal - maximize the power of tea’s 58

JUNE 2017 AUGUST 2017

flavonoids by drinking it freshly brewed. If you want to keep a batch of cold tea in your refrigerator, add a little lemon juice: The citric acid and vitamin C in that squeeze of lemon - or lime, or orange - help preserve the flavonoids.

Cucumbers Cucumbers are a great source of beta-carotene, potassium, magnesium, as well as vitamins C, K and B5, which means they may help lower blood pressure, keep your body's connective tissues healthy and help keep your skin hydrated. In recent studies, researchers have found encouraging preliminary evidence that cucumbers may also have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer benefits. Be sure to eat the skin and seeds, because that's where you'll find the biggest bang of nutrients.

Avocadoes Avocados find their way onto salads, into dressings and on top of burgers with regularity, so it's a good thing that they're full of all sorts of healthy things, including fiber, vitamins B5, B6, C, K, folate and potassium, as well as cell-protecting antioxidants. Avocados are also full of fat, but don't avoid them because of this. Yes, one half of an avocado contains 15 grams of unsaturated fat, but it's good fat - monounsaturated fat. Monounsaturated fats (MUFAs) have been found to help improve cholesterol levels as well as reduce the risk of developing heart disease. Should you be watching your weight though, you might want to consider the amount of avocadoes eaten, as one contains 400 calories, make sure you include the calories within your recommended total caloric intake.

Water melon Staying hydrated keeps your memory sharp and your mood stable. The good news is that you don’t just have to drink water. You can eat it too. In addition to delivering skin-protecting lycopene which might protect your skin from sun damage, watermelon is 92 percent water (hence the name). That same high water content will also keep you feeling full, which could curb cravings.

Yogurt Yogurt is made for summer eating. It is high in protein which will help you to feel fuller faster and longer. In turn, this will keep you from overloading on salty, high-calorie snacks. In addition to its high content of calcium, vitamins B2, B12, potassium and magnesium, yogurt also adds a dose of probiotics, beneficial bacteria that keeps your digestive system running smoothly. Probiotics also have proven benefits in boosting the immune system and preventing some infections.

Salmon When I consider the healthiest foods, salmon is always on my list since it is rich in omega 3, protein and essential vitamins and minerals such as vitamins A, B, D, selenium, iron, calcium and phosphorous. In addition to its proven benefits in reducing heart disease, salmon is an amazing nutrition source for healthy hair, skin and nails. Studies have also shown some beneficial effects of salmon on improved mood, brain and cognition and on decreased risk of some cancers. Finally, we must never forget water all year round, but especially during the summer season. Water helps keep your body hydrated, which is important for keeping all of your body functions working properly. It keeps tissues moist and cells healthy and it helps remove toxins and waste. Water also helps the body regulate temperature and helps prevent dehydration. How much water is enough? It's going to depend on your lifestyle, your habits and how your individual body works, but the Institute of Medicine suggests roughly 2 to 3 liters of total fluids every day (that's 2.2 liters or 9 cups for women and 3 liters or 13 cups for men every day). Bored with water? Many fruits and vegetables (such as lemon, cucumbers and berries) can be added to your water giving you the added benefit of boosting your vitamin and mineral intake at the same time. www.cpmagazine.net

Coconut Red Velvet

The cream cheese: l2

packages cream cheese (Philadelphia cheese)

l1 cup butter, softened l1/2 teaspoon coconut extract or vanilla extract l8 cups powdered sugar l4 cups of shredded coconut

Steps: 1) Preheat oven to 350o. Beat butter at medium speed. Gradually

add sugar, beating until blended. Add eggs, one at a time, beating until blended after each addition. Add food colouring and vanilla, beating until blended.

mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Beat at low speed just until blended after each addition. Spoon batter into four greased and floured 8-inch round cake pans.

A

good old red velvet recipe can do more than just satisfy a sweet tooth. This recipe takes the classic red velvet to the next level by adding the magical flavour of coconut. I tried this recipe for my best friend’s Bridal Shower and the cake was the start of the event! There are many different methods used by bakers to bake a red velvet cake. Here is the recipe I use: You will need:

3) Bake all pans at 350o for 25 minutes; or until a wooden pick

inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes. Remove from pans and cool completely (about 1 hour).

4) Beat cream cheese and butter at medium speed until smooth. Add coconut extract, beating until blended. Gradually add powdered sugar, beating until smooth. Stir in coconut. Keep it in the fridge to cool before spreading it on the cake.

5) Spread about one cup coconut/cream cheese frosting

between cake layers; spread remaining frosting on top and sides of cake.

6) You can garnish your cake with coconut flakes or cake crumbs.

l3/4 cup butter, cut into small cubes l2 cups powder sugar l3 large eggs l3 tablespoons red liquid food colouring l1 tablespoon vanilla extract l2 3/4 cups flour l1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder l1 tablespoon baking powder l3/4 teaspoon baking soda l1/4 teaspoon salt l1 1/2 cups buttermilk l1 1/2 cups of shredded coconut flakes

This cake it better served with coconut ice-cream on the side or dark chocolate fudge sauce which is my husband's favourite. You can also add some fresh fruits on top, but I love keeping it simple with just the coconut flakes. Remember: Bake for love and bake with love! TIFFANY & CO ANNOUNCES A BOLD NEW JEWELRY COLLECTION Tiffany & Co. announces Tiffany HardWear, a new jewelry collection that embodies the power and spirit of New York City and the energy of its streets. The collection name and designs draw inspiration from the urban soul of the city, where the modern rebel mixes high fashion with street style. Tiffany HardWear is as classic as it is edgy. Inspired by a unisex bracelet from 1971, the collection has been reimagined to include earrings, rings, necklaces and pendants, and goes perfectly with a leather jacket as it does with couture. The metal-intensive designs capture the industrialism of the city. The signature gauge links at the heart of this graphic collection reflect the clean, simple shapes of utilitarian hardware. A chain necklace in 18k gold features graduated links that shift in scale, with a clasp that seamlessly disappears into the piece. A reinterpretation of the original design is embellished with a detachable lock and ball for versatile styling. The unique bolt backing on a pair of triple drop earrings makes for a perfectly symmetrical design, as striking from the back as it is from the front. Tiffany is the internationally renowned jeweler founded in New York in 1837. Through its subsidiaries, Tiffany & Co. manufactures products and operates TIFFANY & CO. retail stores worldwide, and also engages in direct selling through Internet, catalog and business gift operations

AUGUST 2017

The first step to finding your body shape is measuring yourself on three points your shoulders or bust, your waist and your hips. It is important to measure the widest point of your shoulders and hips and the thinnest point of your waist. Take a note of these figures and continue reading to find out your body shape.

WHAT IS YOUR BODY SHAPE? All women fit into one of the following categories. Can you identify which best relates to your own body features?

Triangle - When hips are wider than shoulders with a

defined waist. Measurement fact: Your hips are more than 5% bigger than your shoulders or bust. Best pick: Fitted printed tops and flare dresses. Why: Will show off how slight you are on top and are roomier from the waist down for your curvier bottom half. Don’ts: Flashy bottoms made with thick materials will draw attention and add volume to your bottom half.

Inverted Triangle - When shoulders are larger than

hips. Measurement fact: Your shoulder/bust measurement is more than 5% bigger than your hip measurement Best pick: Fitted jackets with a nipped-in waist and a flared bottom. Why: The defined waist and flare over your hips create the illusion of lower-body curves and will help balance out your broad shoulders. Don’ts: Big collars, chunky knits, double breasted jackets, high waisted trousers, chunky necklaces.

Rectangle - When shoulders, waist and hips measure

pretty much the same. Measurement fact: Your waist is less than 25% smaller than your shoulder/bust and your shoulder, bust and hip

measurements are within 5% of each other. Best pick: Skirts with volume-increasing details like ruffles, bows or embellishments. Why: They fill out your slight hips and balance your upper body. Don’ts: Tight belts, straight items, big shoulder pads.

Hourglass - When shoulders and hips measure more or less the same and the waist is defined/smaller. Measurement fact: Your waist is at least 25% smaller than your shoulder/bust, your waist is at least 25% smaller than your hips and your shoulder and hip measurements are within 5% of each other. Best pick: Wrap tops and dresses. Why: Accentuate your waist and enhance your hourglass figure. Don’ts: Shapeless straight garments, short jackets, chunky knits, angular designs. Oval - When weight sits in the tummy area but with smaller shoulders and hips. Measurement fact: Your chest and waist measurements are fairly close but your hips are about six inches smaller than your chests. Best pick: Above the knee skirt or shorts. Why: Brings the attention to your gorgeous legs. Don’ts: Belts, sleeves finishing near your bust, details or volume near tummy area, high-waist trousers, clutch bags, petite shoes or Ugg boots.

TOP PICKS FOR A TRIANGLE BODY SHAPE: Women with a triangle body shape are feminine, with tiny shoulders and curvaceous hips. They account for 20% of the female population and we want to show you two looks that will certainly fit any triangle body shape lady to perfection.

CASUAL LOOK: When dressing for a triangle body shape we have to bear in mind that our top half is our focus, therefore a shirt with exposed shoulders, as per the image, does exactly that. These bell bottom jeans create balance with the shoulders, giving the illusion of smaller hips, which is the area we want to slightly camouflage.

EVENING LOOK The mention of a printed crop top is music to our ears and is perfect for all triangle shape ladies. Keep it simple with an A-line black skirt and a slim belt to highlight that gorgeous waist. To complete the look, bring the fun out with an elephant shaped bag and super stylish mustard sandals. What do you think about this chic and elegant look for a special night out?

Adding a biker jacket that sits between your waist and hips will do the trick and the bandana, adds that extra bit of rock star style! When it comes to handbags stay away from those sitting at your hip level, a shoulder bag being an optimal choice.

enim on denim is always in style and you’ll always look fabulous in it! My advice is to wear denim shades to flatter or hide body parts. As a general rule, lighter shades of denim draw attention to the body parts they cover, while darker washes create a slimming effect. For many women this means that dark denim jeans with a lighter denim top or jacket is the most flattering way to go.

You never go wrong with denim; it’s always a great choice! Here are some ideas on how to wear your next denim on denim look. Please tag us on @CPmagazine & @Jazz_Boutique. I’ll repost the best looks!

WRITING MOVIE

WRONGS moviewrongs.com by: JIM WEST

Directed by NicolajArcel Written by AkivaGoldsman, Jeff Pinkner, Anders Thomas Jensen, and NikolajArcel

M

ention the name Stephen King and you instantly know you are in for a solid story as he has long been a master in several genres of writing. Fans of his Dark Tower series have eagerly awaited the film adaptation. This has been a long time coming and many studios are looking for the next big series to mine cash from audiences. Sadly this film does not launch such a series. With four writers on this, it is such a sad thing that the fans of this series do not get what they have long waited for. It can be a daunting task for any writer to adapt material from a book, and four writers have seemingly failed here. I have not read The Dark Tower series myself, but I feel this film can still be judged for its plot and story as it is on the big screen.

Here come the spoilers! An 11 year old kid named Jake Chambers has been having dreams and visions of another world where a dark tower is under attack by a man in black (Matthew McConaughey). His behavior and drawings result in concerns about his mental state and he is sent to a mental institution to be evaluated. But Jake sees the officials from the institution as the skin-wearing monsters from his dreams. Jake escapes and goes to a house from his dreams and soon enters a portal that transports him to another world. He quickly crosses paths with the gunslinger, Roland Deschain (played by Idris Elba) from his dreams. Roland is the last of a long line of protectors of the Dark Tower. There are some hints at a pseudo King Arthur tale as the guns Roland carries are mentioned to be forged from Excalibur itself. A flashback of this backstory would have been nice in this film. The man in black is named Walter, and Roland has been seeking revenge against Walter for killing his father. Walter’s magic doesn’t seem to have any effects upon Roland and I would have liked to have had some explanation to why. Again a backstory or flashback here would have been most helpful. Now Walter has been using kids with psychic powers to use them to tear down the tower, and Jake so happens to be in possession of this power referred to as 82

AUGUST 2017

‘the shine’. This sets off a struggle for Roland to find out where Walter is to exact revenge, and for Jake to protect his world from the destruction and evil that would wreak havoc should the tower fall. Jakes and Roland end up transporting back to Earth and before anyone can blink the climax of the film is upon us. I myself had to check my watch to ensure I wasn’t mistaken on such a short runtime. I felt they paced the film well enough in the beginning but then suddenly ran out of budget and had to rush the climax. The story and film suffers horribly for it. There is a rush of action, struggle, and wrap up that I was left with no real sense of victory as it felt just like waiting in a long line at a theme park for a 30 second ride. Disappointing for me. I can’t imagine how fans of the source material felt. I definitely felt a lot was left out of this film. So how to improve this film? In three words – DON’T MAKE IT! Do not make a film of such an epic scale if the studios behind it are not willing to take the risk of world building and establishing a series. I really liked the actors in this film, but the four writer’s failed Mr. King. The studio failed Mr. King. Now this would not be a writing movie ‘wrong’ review if I didn’t offer how to fix the film they made. I would open the film up with a flashback of King Arthur and the line of gunslingers through time battling evil from the tower. How Excalibur got forged into two guns would have been nice to see also. Then create a scene of Roland’s father teaching him the creed, before showing Walter and the kids doing the beam attack on the tower. This would open the story better. Then do NOT show what happens to Roland’s father yet. Hold that off for later in the film when he and Walter face off in the climax so he can echo the words of his father again. Leave Walter alive in the climax; wounded but alive. This would allow for a sequel. The film can end the same way, but instead of hope it ends with the journey and struggle continuing. The film hints at a Crimson King so this is where you can show Walter reporting back to his master. In total you would need at least 6-8 more minutes of runtime to add the strength the story needed badly to lift it up to being worthy of a second viewing and some fan approval. Thanks for reading Writing Movie ‘WRONGS’.

A MIND AT PLAY: HOW CLAUDE SHANNON INVENTED THE INFORMATION AGE

A young woman returns home to care for her failing father in this fine, funny, and inescapably touching debut, from an affecting and wonderfully original new literary voice. A few days after Christmas in a small suburb outside of L.A., pairs of a man's pants hang from the trees. The pants belong to Howard Young, a prominent history professor, recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Howard's wife, Annie, summons their daughter, Ruth. Freshly disengaged from her fiance and still broken up about it, feeling that life has not turned out quite the way she planned, thirty-year-old Ruth quits her job and arrives home to find her parents' situation worse than she'd realized. Her father is erratically lucid and her mother, a devoted and creative cook, sees the sources of memory loss in every pot and pan. But as Howard's condition intensifies, the comedy in Ruth's situation takes hold, gently transforming her grief. She throws herself into caretaking: cooking dementia-fighting meals (a feast of jellyfish!), researching supplements, anything to reignite her father's once-notable memory. And when the university finally lets Howard go, Ruth and one of her father's handsome former students take their efforts to help Howard one step too far.

Claude Shannon was a groundbreaking polymath, a brilliant tinkerer, and a digital pioneer. He constructed a fleet of customized unicycles and a flamethrowing trumpet, outfoxed Vegas casinos, and built juggling robots. He also wrote the seminal text of the digital revolution, which has been called “the Magna Carta of the Information Age.” His discoveries would lead contemporaries to compare him to Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton. His work anticipated by decades the world we’d be living in today—and gave mathematicians and engineers the tools to bring that world to pass. In this elegantly written, exhaustively researched biography, Jimmy Soni and Rob Goodman reveal Claude Shannon’s full story for the first time. It’s the story of a small-town Michigan boy whose career stretched from the era of room-sized computers powered by gears and string to the age of Apple. It’s the story of the origins of our digital world in the tunnels of MIT and the “idea factory” of Bell Labs, in the “scientists’ war” with Nazi Germany, and in the work of Shannon’s collaborators and rivals, thinkers like Alan Turing, John von Neumann, Vannevar Bush, and Norbert Wiener.

READING WITH PATRICK: A TEACHER, A STUDENT, AND A LIFE-CHANGING FRIENDSHIP

OPTION B: FACING ADVERSITY, BUILDING RESILIENCE AND FINDING JOY

by Michelle Kuo

by Sheryl Sandberg, Adam Grant, Adam M. Grant

Recently graduated from Harvard University, Michelle Kuo arrived in the rural town of Helena, Arkansas, as a Teach for America volunteer, bursting with optimism and drive. But she soon encountered the jarring realities of life in one of the poorest counties in America, still disabled by the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow. In this stirring memoir, Kuo, the child of Taiwanese immigrants, shares the story of her complicated but rewarding mentorship of one student, Patrick Browning, and his remarkable literary and personal awakening. Convinced she can make a difference in the lives of her teenaged students, Michelle Kuo puts her heart into her work, using quiet reading time and guided writing to foster a sense of self in students left behind by a broken school system.

After the sudden death of her husband, Sheryl Sandberg felt certain that she and her children would never feel pure joy again. “I was in ‘the void,’” she writes, “a vast emptiness that fills your heart and lungs and restricts your ability to think or even breathe.” Her friend Adam Grant, a psychologist at Wharton, told her there are concrete steps people can take to recover and rebound from life-shattering experiences. We are not born with a fixed amount of resilience. It is a muscle that everyone can build.

WHAT TO SAY NEXT by Julie Buxbaum

From the New York Times bestselling author of Tell Me Three Things comes a charming and poignant story about two struggling teenagers who find an unexpected connection just when they need it most. For fans of Sophie Kinsella, Jennifer Niven, and Rainbow Rowell. Sometimes a new perspective is all that is needed to make sense of the world. KIT: I don’t know why I decide not to sit with Annie and Violet at lunch. It feels like no one here gets what I’m going through. How could they? I don’t even understand. DAVID: In the 622 days I’ve attended Mapleview High, Kit Lowell is the first person to sit at my lunch table. I mean, I’ve never once sat with someone until now. “So your dad is dead,” I say to Kit, because this is a fact I’ve recently learned about her.

A BEAUTIFUL, TERRIBLE THING: A MEMOIR OF MARRIAGE AND BETRAYAL by Jen Waite

What do you do when you discover that the person you've built your life around never existed? When "it could never happen to me" does happen to you? These are the questions facing Jen Waite when she begins to realize that her loving husband - the father of her infant daughter, her best friend, the love of her life fits the textbook definition of psychopath. In a raw, first-person account, Waite recounts each heartbreaking discovery, every life-destroying lie, and reveals what happens once the dust finally settles on her demolished marriage. After a disturbing email sparks Waite's suspicion that her husband is having an affair, she tries to uncover the truth and rebuild trust in her marriage. Instead, she finds more lies, infidelity, and betrayal than she could have imagined. Waite obsessively analyzes her relationship, trying to find a single moment from the last five years that isn't part of the long-con of lies and manipulation. With a dual-timeline narrative structure, we see Waite's romance bud, bloom, and wither simultaneously, making the heartbreak and disbelief even more affecting.

IN THE DAYS OF RAIN: A DAUGHTER, A FATHER, A CULT

THE ALMOST SISTERS

by Rebecca Stott

by Joshilyn Jackson

Rebecca Stott was born a fourth-generation Brethren and she grew up in England, in the Brighton branch of the Exclusive Brethren cult in the early 1960s. Her family dated back to the group's origins in the first half of the nineteenth century, and her father was a high-ranking minister. However, as an intelligent, inquiring child, Stott was always asking dangerous questions and so, it turns out, was her father, who was also full of doubt. When a sex scandal tore the Exclusive Brethren apart in 1970, her father pulled the family out of the cult. But its impact on their lives shaped everything before and all that was to come. The Iron Room (named for the windowless meeting houses made of corrugated iron where the Brethren would worship) is Stott's attempt to understand and even forgive her father: a brilliant, charismatic, difficult, and at times cruel man who nonetheless inspired his daughter with his love of literature, film, and art and with his passion for life.

Superheroes have always been Leia Birch Briggs' weakness. One tequila-soaked night at a comics convention, the usually levelheaded graphic novelist is swept off her barstool by a handsome and anonymous Batman. It turns out the caped crusader has left her with more than just a nice, fuzzy memory. She's having a baby boy-an unexpected but not unhappy development in the thirty-eight year-old's life. But before Leia can break the news of her impending single-motherhood (including the fact that her baby is biracial) to her conventional, Southern family, her step-sister Rachel's marriage implodes. Worse, she learns her beloved ninety-year-old grandmother, Birchie, is losing her mind, and she's been hiding her dementia with the help of Wattie, her best friend since girlhood.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND

GET BIG

THE KING’S CHOICE

Electrical lineman Roy Neary (Dreyfuss) is one of several people who experience a close encounter of the first kind, witnessing UFOs flying through the night sky. He is subsequently haunted by a mountain-like image and becomes obsessed with discovering what it represents, much to the dismay of his family. Meanwhile, government agents around the world have close encounters of the second kind, discovering physical evidence of extraterrestrial visitors in the form of lost fighter aircraft from World War II and a stranded military ship that disappeared decades earlier, only to suddenly reappear in the Sonora and Gobi Desert. Roy and the agents then follow the clues they have been given to reach a site where they will have a close encounter of the third kind: contact.

Inspired by somewhat true events, Get Big follows the misadventures of two friends as they reconnect to attend a high school classmate's wedding. Alec is the charming troublemaker, while Nate provides the neurotic and awkward foil to his friend's unpredictable antics. Get Big takes place over the course of a crazy 24-hour period during which Alec and Nate cross paths with oddball cops, curmudgeonly neighbors, drug dealers, psychopaths, escorts and pretty girls, all while the clock ticks down their classmate's big moment.

The film is based on three dramatic days in April 1940, when the king of Norway is forced to make the decision to either surrender or die at the hands of Nazis.

Please introduce yourself to our readers: I’m a Digital Influencer and Brand Consultant. After working as Editor-in-Chief for several luxury magazines in fashion, bridal and lifestyle throughout Jordan and Lebanon, I founded Shirene Consulting to continue my pursuit in luxury and the creative world in more depth. I live by the mantra that nothing is impossible. I always tell people that impossible doesn't exist. I'm also too much of a dreamer and love envisioning everything around me in pink.

Tell us about your education: My BA is in law. Although I enjoyed my studies and value my degree choice, fashion has always been a hobby for me and so my interests led me to the media and fashion industry as a fashion editor then Editor-in-Chief. My law background still proves to be very beneficial in my career, allowing me to be more outspoken, patient and persistent. It also taught me to be a good negotiator. The need to be bold when you’re a lawyer is also a must when it comes to fashion.

Why and when did you establish Shireen Consulting and what services does it offer? My love, confidence and voice in the industry grew and I decided to move along to greater and bigger challenges, doing more to influence the creative world while inspiring women. That’s when SRC was formed. In 2015 I began to offer services like image consulting, campaign conceptualization and production, re-branding, market planning, communication strategies, styling, designing and customized events. There’s so much great talent in the world of fashion, jewellery and beauty that it becomes extremely difficult to stand out and get people’s attention. This is where I come in. I eliminate the prosaic expressions and try to reveal the client’s authenticity and something that would resonate more with the human in all of us. After I made the choice to launch Shirene Consulting, I continued to actively engage with the community of people I wanted to serve. This included emerging designers whom I mentor and work closely with. I love to inspire and motivate people to challenge themselves and become their greatest version. Now I love what I do more and I think my clients enjoy it too!

What motivated you to study law? Becoming a lawyer was somewhat of a family tradition. I did enjoy it tremendously and I’m still passionate about it.

Who or what was your inspiration in fashion and what led you to move into media and fashion after studying law? My mom is without a doubt my ultimate inspiration. Shopping together was always a serious and planned expedition. I didn’t really have a concrete game plan when I changed my career, but I think being in law and growing up with that kind of influence gave me the courage to just go after what I wanted the most.

What is the best thing about being in the media and fashion field for you? The unpredictability. There’s never a dull moment and no typical day. I love having to adapt to whatever needs to be done from shooting a campaign, styling and consulting; there’s so much creativity and growing involved. Starting in media and the local publishing industry provided me with great tools to hone my creativity and knowledge and to grow and experience much more than I would have on my own.

How do you keep yourself updated in the world of fashion and style? I believe fashion has made me more connected to people. Travelling is a major aspect of my job and with that, Fashion Weeks. Also, from the strangers I see and meet there is plenty of inspiration.

What’s your vision for Shireen Consulting and where do you see it going in the next five years? One of my goals revolves around establishing a coherent fashion system in Jordan with an important focus on education and cultural development; some sort of an initiative that contributes to the promotion of cultural diversity and support to the creative industry which includes a fashion/design fund and a fashion institute.

Tell us about some of your achievements that make you proud: My proudest accomplishment would have to be when I launched my own company. Ever since I launched SRC, everything makes me proud; little or big wins. It was such a rush to come to work and see clients flourishing because of something I helped develop. On a personal level, I’m proud to have been the first brand ambassador in the ME for several luxury brands.

What other projects are you currently working on? I’m constantly looking for new concepts, researching ideas and creating projects. When I'm interested in something, I want to know everything about it. I need to know what's behind it all. You’ll have to wait and see when it’s all revealed!

You were yourself the co-founder and editor-inchief of four magazines. Tell us more about the journey and your experience.

What do you think has been the key to your success?

It’s not an unusual story, but every step of the way my journey has been glorious. In 2006 I was hired to launch Jordan’s first high-end fashion magazine for women. Before taking on this role I was working for a competing publisher doing fashion shoots and styling. So this was a dream come true! After the huge success of this magazine, I went on to launch three more high-end magazines for the same publisher between Jordan and Lebanon.

There’s no secret. Success comes from self-confidence and hard work while being passionate about what I’m doing; and always giving it my all is important. My goals towards success continue to change. A long time ago, it was to start a new luxury magazine - which I did and it just kept expanding to four magazines. Then it was to make it influential and loved – which it has. A few years ago, it was to start my own consulting firm – which happened. So for

me, the key is to keep dreaming, and dreaming big. Success is not one destination but the journey you take to achieve those dreams.

General words of wisdom you live by? ‘If you get the inside right, the outside will fall into place.’ Ekhart Tolle.

How do you think Social Media has changed the way you work today compared to when you started? It really has changed the world! Digital and social media isn’t just changing the way we do business, it’s changing what businesses we’re in to begin with. It’s an essential component for any business strategy and all forwardthinking organizations understand the value in shifting from traditional engagement to progressive models. It's given my clients the ability to upsell and cross-sell existing customers. But it definitely added a lot more pressure as an influencer. It’s my job and I love it because I’m constantly challenged to provide content and come up with concepts that are creative and also present value. I do, however, try to maintain a balance and solid structure so my personal life doesn’t get compromised. Once I built my loyal community and followers there was a responsibility to be truthful, inspiring, yet modest.

How would you describe your personal style? There isn’t really any consistency in the way I dress. My friends call it ‘eccentric chic’. I have built a wardrobe of staple dresses and high heels. I like to show my feminine and clever business side with hints of trendiness. I love art and all the intricacies that go into developing beautiful clothes; those are the things that make me happy and the pieces I cherish in my closet and for my choice of style.

Name some of your favourite designers. I don’t have a specific favourite designer. I’m moved by creativity in general, each and every designer I meet is different. Each one has their own special story that makes me appreciate and enjoy their work even more. I’m someone who is open to all tastes, I adore fashion and I’m constantly inspired and like to have fun with it.

What is the most important thing you’ve learned since starting your career in fashion and consulting? My journey of self-development is a prime example that if you push yourself hard enough and believe that you’re already where you want to be, then it won’t be long before everything you wished for is manifested into reality. Surely, challenges are always part of the journey. How else could you appreciate the outcome and be grateful for what you have? But I keep going.

What is your ultimate dream or goal? I have many but my mission in life is to inspire and provoke. I allow my own experiences, behaviour and work to motivate people in fulfilling their own dreams. Whether it’s through charitable work, style advice, a powerful campaign or a creative image; no matter how big or small, my various means inspire each person in different ways.

Your message for us at CP magazine? Everything I do is a matter of heart, body and soul. Strive to be strong and independent. Be yourself and don’t let others define you. There are limitations in allowing others to define who you are. Focus on your dreams even if they go beyond common sense.

Porsche is the most attractive vehicle brand for US customers

Porsche has defended its top position among US customers: That is the conclusive result of the 22nd “Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study”, conducted by US market research institute J.D. Power. For the 13th time in succession, the sports car manufacturer has finished top of the overall rankings, meaning that Porsche remains the most attractive vehicle brand for drivers in the USA. The Porsche 911, Cayenne and Macan models also took the top positions in their categories. More than 69,000 new car owners took part in the survey, assessing 243 models from 33 manufacturers in 10 categories. “The aim of our company’s actions is to have thrilled customers”, says Oliver Blume, President and CEO of Porsche AG. “The results of the J.D. Power study give us renewed confidence that we are following the right path with our strategy. It is now clear that alongside the quality of the product, it is also the level of service and communication with our customers that resonates.” For the third time in a row, the Macan has taken the top spot in the “Compact Premium SUV” segment in the APEAL vehicle rankings. The Cayenne, a sporty, off-road vehicle, also scores highly in the eyes of US customers, powering to first place in the “Midsize Premium SUV” field for the sixth time since 2011. In addition, the Porsche 911 accumulated the most points in its class and was distinguished with the “Highest Ranked Appeal” award in the “Midsize Premium Sporty Car” category. Porsche drivers in the USA had already voted the 911 and the Macan to first places in their categories in the “Initial Quality Study” last month. The superb results in both studies match the current positive developments in sales figures in the US, which represents Porsche’s second-largest market. In the year to date, the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer has delivered 27,000 vehicles to customers in the USA, achieving an increase of three per cent compared to the period from January to June 2016. The APEAL study determines how attractive the vehicles are to the US market. Each year, new car owners whose vehicles are registered between November and February are surveyed 90 days after the delivery of their vehicle. In total, 77 characteristics are examined across ten categories. As well as driving dynamics and design, aspects such as day-to-day usability and comfort are considered.

Oris extends the next generation Aquis line with a small seconds model

Earlier this year, Oris announced the next generation Aquis and introduced a series of time and date models. With its potent combination of quality, performance and value, the new version of the independent Swiss company’s diver’s watch was an immediate success. Now, Oris is adding a small seconds version to the collection. The advantage of placing the small, or running seconds at 9 o’clock on the dial is that it isolates the watch’s minutes hand, the most important hand to divers as they time their dives. During a dive, divers align the minutes hand with the minute scale on the watch’s uni-directional rotating bezel, enabling them to keep track of remaining dive time safely and securely. Oris works closely with the diving community and developed the movement with small second at 9 o’clock in-house in response to its feedback. The Aquis Small Second, Date model benefits from the stylish redesign introduced to the Aquis line this year. Oris’s designers have made the horns and bracelet thinner, giving the case a more slender profile. The hands and indices are now bolder and sharper, and the screw-in security crown and crown protectors have been tapered and now sit more elegantly within the watch’s silhouette. The word ‘Aquis’ is now proudly printed on the dial. The look is not the only dynamic to have evolved. Oris has engineered a small gap between the case and the bezel, making the bezel easier to grip and adjust. This functional design mirrors the watch’s performance. The Aquis Small Second, Date has a uni-directional rotating bezel with a scratch- and fade-resistant ceramic insert and water resistance to 50 bar (500 metres). Initially, there are two versions of the Aquis Small Second, Date available. The blue dial version comes on a blue or black rubber strap or a stainless steel bracelet with the Orisdeveloped safety anchor and quick-adjust, sliding-sledge folding clasp, which can be extended or tightened without needing to take the watch off. The same features come on the black and orange version of the watch, which has a black rubber strap and orange Super-LumiNova® luminescent detailing on the hands and hour markers. Orange is one of the most visible colours underwater and a natural pairing with a diver’s watch. The overall look is therefore much more versatile – the new Aquis Small Second, Date is a watch to wear under water, and with a suit.

OFFICINE PANERAI Luminor Marina 1950 3 Days Automatic Titanio: 44Mm

Officine Panerai, the luxury watchmaking brand renowned for its unique blend of Italian design and Swiss technology, pays tribute to the Middle East region with the launch of two new Luminor Marina timepieces, sold exclusively in the Panerai Boutiques across the MEA Region. The Luminor Marina was the first great success in the history of the Panerai brand. In the 1990s, after decades of creations carried out for the Italian Navy, the Luminor with the small seconds dial at 9 o’clock was one of the models which contributed so much to making the Panerai brand known throughout the world, with its watches becoming an icon of contemporary high quality sports watchmaking. The first of the two new Special Edition watches is the Luminor Marina 1950 3 Days Automatic Titanio (PAM00734), created in a limited edition of 100 units and featuring a sand dial, a colour reminiscent of the golden Arabian Desert. The second Special Edition (PAM00733) is produced in a limited edition of 50 units and features a dial of a brilliant and intense blue, a colour reminiscent of Panerai’s passion for the sea. Both versions have the date at 3 o’clock and the small seconds dial at 9 o’clock on a classic Panerai dial of minimal design, its large figures being perfectly legible even in the dark thanks to the sandwich structure of the dial. This dial creates a contrast of sophisticated elegance with the gilded hands and the titanium of which the Luminor 1950 case, 44 mm in diameter, is made. The winding crown is protected by the iconic bridge device, which protects it from accidental shocks and helps to ensure the watch’s water-resistance of 30 bar (a depth of about 300 metres).
