‘Ready or Not’ Guarantees Terrifying Horror in this Killer Game of Hide and Seek The Fright Fest Starring Samara Weaving, Adam Brody, Mark O’Brien, Henry Czerny and Andie MacDowell releases in Kuwait on the 22nd August 2019
I
n Kuwait from 22nd August, American horror-thriller "Ready or Not" follows the story of a young bride who is invited on the night of her wedding by her rich and eccentric in-laws to participate in a time-honored tradition that turns into a lethal game of survival with everyone fighting to stay alive. Ready or not, here I come. The suspenseful and gripping story revolves around Grace (Samara Weaving), who is about to marry Alex (Mark O’Brien) in the creepy mansion belonging to the groom’s rich family. The extravagant nuptials turn deadly, when Grace’s new relatives instigate a high-stakes game of Hide and Seek – apparently a wedding day tradition. Grace must now hide from midnight until dawn while her new in-laws hunt down the terrified bride. 10
AUGUST 2019
“It’s great psychologically, because you are always second-guessing what everyone’s thinking. The theme is interesting too; for me, it’s about the question ‘How well do you really know someone and, under pressure, what choices do you make?’ Mark’s character (Grace’s husband Alex) has to decide between the love of his life and his loyalty to his family,” comments Weaving. Hiding in the mansion, as she fights for her life, it remains to be seen whether Grace can trust Becky (played by Andie MacDowell), or any other members of her new family. Also starring Mark O’Brien and Adam Brody, the film was directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. “It’s my first, flat-out horror movie – and I loved it! I loved the script, which is really clever. The writers - Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy - came up with an amazing
concept about an over-the-top, wealthy family. Then, to bring in the idea of Hide and Seek to the story was so interesting. Obviously, as adults we don’t play Hide and Seek anymore, but I have visceral memories of playing the game as a child, and I remember that feeling of hiding and being looked for. It’s exciting and exhilarating!” says MacDowell. Ready or Not releases across cinemas in the Kuwait on the 22nd August 2019. Directed by: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett Screenplay by: Guy Busick & R. Christopher Murphy Produced by: Tripp Vinson, James Vanderbilt, William Sherak, Bradley J. Fischer Executive Produced by: Chad Villella, Tara Farney, Tracey Nyberg, Daniel Bekerman Cast: Samara Weaving, Adam Brody, Mark O’Brien, with Henry Czerny and Andie MacDowell

KENZO TALI BAG
PRESS RELEASES
SALVATORE FERRAGAMO PRESENTS URBAN
Inspired by the Maison’s casual-chic collections, Ferragamo Urban is a men's watch that combines refined details with a modern, incisive aesthetics. The black guillochè dial, marked by luminescent hands, features the date at 3h and the red seconds hand at 6h. On the dial, the logo at 12h and the Double Gancini underline the character of identity of this model, reaffirmed on the silicon strap by the embossed Ferragamo lettering. Perfect to complete a young, dynamic style, Ferragamo Urban is available also with stainless steel bracelet. Available from October in Salvatore Ferragamo stores, at authorised retailers, and online.
Reconnecting with the spiritual world and tapping into our intuitions, Kenzo has created a vibrant constellation of bags of varying colors and textures, using the motif of the Eye on the clasp, a universal symbol of luck in many cultures. The name of this collection, TALI, comes as a derivative of the word “talisman”, a powerful amulet to the wearer, able to possess spiritual powers and bring good fortune. Throughout the collection, KENZO integrates clean design and elegant craftsmanship to each bag.
THE HOUSE OF GIVENCHY PRESENTS THE EDEN BAG INTERCHANGEABILITY AND PERSONAL STATEMENTS ARE THE NEW BAG’S SIGNATURES First presented on the Givenchy runway for Fall-Winter 2019/20, the Eden handbag is the House’s daring and graphic new statement bag. Designed in the spirit of the lush paradise Artistic Director Clare Waight Keller celebrated in her Fall-Winter collection and in the show’s scenography, the Eden evokes temptation and desire through a mysterious alchemy of bold graphics, sinuous lines and exotic finishes. Versatility of shape and in styles of wear define the Eden, by day and by night: small and medium styles glide glamorously through the day, while a cross-body pouch with adjustable chain strap, a Nano belt bag, and a mini with a slender leather strap let their wearer venture out freely. The medium style may be personalized with a choice of removable and interchangeable straps in leather embellished with lozenges or in crocodile embossing, a feature that will be revisited in the seasons to come so that collectors may update their bag’s look in function of their mood. A feat of leather-working savoir-faire, the Eden brings soft, smooth, silky-finish skins together with crisp, geometric lines, sharp functionality and smart construction.

JIMMY CHOO UNVEILS AUTUMN WINTER 2019 CAMPAIGN STARRING KAIA GERBER PHOTOGRAPHED BY STEVEN MEISEL
Panerai Radiomir
Military Origins Summarized in Pigment A mandatory matt look, discreet and intentionally elusive in its design. Rigorously monochrome, because it is specifically designed to merge into the surrounding background, whatever it is, blending with its shades. It is therefore strategic. Tendencies of the dark green in its most powerful and material expression, historically strategic and immediately recognised. To the extent of throwing off the most general definition of its colour and assuming the very specific definition of military green. Panerai has chosen this identifying colour for the dial of the four new Radiomir watches, reinforcing their strong historic identity.
Alyasra Fashion, the regional fashion retail leader, unveils Jimmy Choo’s Autumn Winter 2019 campaign featuring global supermodel, Kaia Gerber, for a second season. The series of captivating images celebrate modern luxury, created by world renowned fashion photographer Steven Meisel. The campaign debuts Jimmy Choo’s monogram, JC, the brand’s initials as an oversized sculpture in a succession of powerful portraits. Meisel captures Gerber’s fresh and dynamic spirit, reflecting the very essence of a modern heroine; the muse for the Autumn Winter collection. Heralding a new chapter for Jimmy Choo, the JC monogram features the brand’s initials cast in a brushed gold faceted font with a confident inter-linked silhouette. Ever-present and celebrated throughout in multiple iterations, JC is a constant reminder of the brand’s meaning and value providing an authoritative hallmark for signature styles.

LACOSTE INTRODUCES THE COURTLINE FW19 COLLECTION
DREAMS DO COME TRUE WITH MESSIKA'S DIAMOND CATCHER COLLECTION Legend has it that dreams cross the canvas: good dreams are directed towards the feather and get through, while the bad ones are imprisoned in the stone at the center of the dream catcher. The dream catcher is a powerful totem that banishes bad dreams. To give concrete form to this sensation of lightness, once again the Messika workshop has decided to integrate an element other than stone or metal. With a perfect continuity of stones, the detachable feather adjusts to the hollow of the neck. A feeling of weightless plumage reinforced by feather setting, the signature cut of the Maison. Play of light and reflections between the two materials, play of textures: opposites have never been so close together. The collection includes a beautiful barrette, earrings, rings, a long necklace, two choker necklaces and arm bands to honor the tribal inspiration of the collection as well as a stunning delicate tiara. True to her daring style, Valérie Messika has created an exceptional diamond bandeau necklace combined with cockerel feathers. They appear as two noble materials which resonate in contrast. Soft to touch and light to wear, the feather is delicately combined with pear-cut and marquise-cut diamonds. With a perfect continuity of stones, the detachable feather adjusts to the hollow of the neck. A feeling of weightless plumage reinforced by feather setting, signature of the Maison.
HOT COLLECTIONS OF COLD DELIGHTS MELTS AWAY SUMMER BLUES IN KUWAIT With no escape from Kuwait’s scorching heat, BURGER KING® introduced ‘Hotter is Cooler’, a first of its kind concept that makes fun in the sun. Challenging the sun to take its best shot, BURGER KING® guaranteed that as temperatures went up, the prices on its popular cold indulgences went down in REAL time. This was made possible through a dynamic algorithm that mapped the prices of its cold items to real time temperature data taken from a Weather API. Kuwait is internationally known as the hottest country on earth and as temperatures crossed 47 degrees Celsius (116°F), customers saw the prices of their favorite sundaes, milkshakes and B-Chill drinks melt away in real time. No surprise that customers eagerly stayed tuned to the daily forecast and lined-up outside every BURGER KING® restaurant in Kuwait between 24th July and 3rd August 2019. The latest campaign builds on the brand’s creative wave of transforming Kuwait’s hot summers into memorable experiences. Its simmering campaigns have created a world of surprise and anticipation in the country, leaving all to wonder, what 2020’s summer will have in-store! To watch how BURGER KING® captivated people in Kuwait this year again, please visit https://youtu. be/LufWTDsNtTw
Faithful to the brand’s tennis heritage, the Courtline is a sneaker which catches the eye with its sleek design and timeless elegance. Consisting of a classic L.12.12 sole and an upper which combines white leather and pale grey suede insets, its design makes it classic model to have in your wardrobe. A sober aesthetic style recalls the iconic sneakers seen on court in the 1980s, decorated only by a broad stripe of colour and a discretely embossed crocodile on the side. Its visual codes are reminiscent of the lines of a tennis court and contrast with the white upper of the perforated sneaker, echoing the handle of a racket. Reflecting a perfect blend of style and comfort, the Courtline is a pure expression of LACOSTE’s DNA combined with the latest trends. This sneaker is ideal for purists seeking minimalist fashion with a sporty look to meet ever more dynamic everyday needs.

KidZania Kuwait Welcomes Children of Autism Partnership Kuwait to an Unforgettable Day
KidZania Kuwait, the exciting kid-sized metropolis, recently organized a day of fun and entertainment for the children of Autism Partnership Kuwait (APK). The first-time event introduced children to a different entertainment environment, presenting them with an opportunity to realize their inherent potentials by exploring new things. The eventful day was well received by the children where they enjoyed activities such as face painting, and arts and crafts guaranteeing endless entertainment, coiled with an educational element in each activity. The children were entertained with astounding performances by KidZania’s six RightZkeepers: Urbano, Vita, Chika, Beebop, Bekha and Bache who promote the children’s essential rights to know, to care, to share, to create, to be and to play. Children also enjoyed memorable photo opportunities with the RightZkeepers. Eng. Ghosson Al Khaled, Co-founder and Director of Autism Partnership Kuwait said: “Every child deserves to thrive, and specifically, we believe that children with autism can achieve the greatest degree of independence and highest quality of life possible if they get the right treatment at an early age. We thank KidZania, for hosting this fun day that not only raise awareness within the society but also helps our children integrate with their peers in the community in a fun educational environment.”
Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra
Reflect ions of gold and diamonds
This year, the intense reflections of guilloché yellow gold – introduced in the Alhambra collection in 2018 – blend with the sparkle of diamonds and the gleam of gold mother-of-pearl on new jewelry and timepiece creations. The Alhambra collection is incorporating an original pendant, bracelet and long necklace designed to highlight the guilloché technique. The Maison used this traditional aesthetic in the 1910s to embellish watch dials, extending it in the 1930s to cases, powder compacts and Minaudières in which stones mingled with precious metals. Today, Van Cleef & Arpels is drawing inspiration from the evocative lines produced by this engraving technique, through radiant designs etched into yellow gold. The depth and sunbeamlike structure of the veins bestow a subtle relief on the surface of the metal, intensifying the f low of light. By alternating guilloché and diamond-paved motifs, the long necklace and the bracelet captivate the gaze with their shifting reflections suffused with warm hues. Faithful to the collection’s original aesthetic, each Alhambra motif is adorned with a delicate beaded contour and a central gold bead – finely rounded and shimmering.

EIGHT GMAIL ADD-ONS YOU DIDN’T KNOW YOU NEEDED DO MORE WITH YOUR GMAIL. David Nield
G
mail is one of the strongest email clients currently available. But you won’t unlock its true potential until you start installing some of its add-ons: free third-party plug-ins that integrate neatly into the Gmail interface and help you do more with your messages. And with the launch of Gmail Add-ons in October, Google has added even more goodies for your inbox. These extensions primarily focus on business applications, including to-do-list managers, invoicing services, and more — you can browse the full list at the G Suite Marketplace. Click any of the big blue Install buttons to set up that utility inside your inbox on Gmail, whether for the 18
AUGUST 2019
website or for the app. More options should appear over time, so remember to check back regularly. Of the currently-available extensions, we picked out eight of our favorites, encompassing three newly-released Gmail Add-ons and five tried-and-true plug-ins. Learn more about our picks below.
New add-ons Trello
Your employer may have already introduced Trello into your life, but if you’re not already a convert, here’s how it works. This website and app provides a simple cardbased system for keeping track of just about anything. Think of it like a moveable, shareable collection of to-do lists: Many people use it to keep tabs on multiple projects at once, but it’s incredibly flexible, so you can use it for personal as well as professional purposes. You might chart your progress as you plan a vacation or wedding, arrange the week’s activities for your family, or even plot out a novel. However you use it, the Gmail add-on brings Trello right into your inbox. With it, you can quickly convert messages into cards and manage your Trello flow from inside Gmail.
QuickBooks Invoicing for Gmail If you run your own business, then a lot of your messages probably relate to dealing with clients and actually getting paid for your work. That’s where this QuickBooks plug-in can help — it lets you quickly create a professional-looking invoice right from the Gmail interface, even if you’re not a QuickBooks user (though you do need to sign up for a QuckBooks ID first). And the add-on’s abilities go beyond creating static invoices. It can also pick out contacts and details from your incoming messages and track the payment status of all your invoices from inside Gmail. Finally, the plugin offers clients an easy way to pay you instantly through Stripe or QuickBooks.
Asana Asana resembles Trello: It’s a tool built primarily for organizations that can also help personal users. At its heart, Asana is a task manager, letting you direct all the jobs on your plate in a more intuitive way. And its new Gmail add-on brings the service right into your inbox. In practice, that means you can convert emails into tasks with just a few clicks (or taps if you’re on a phone). You can also set due dates, assign tasks to yourself or to other people, and add notes to those to-dos — all without leaving the Gmail interface.
Existing plug-ins Boomerang Boomerang is one of the go-to extensions for Gmail power users. Once you install the plug-in, which works in any browser, you get control over when you send your messages: A new Send Later button will appear in the window for composing a new email, allowing you to schedule your email to be sent at some time in the future. So you can delay an outgoing message by an hour or make it arrive first thing in the morning on the following Monday. The plug-in can also ping you about emails where you haven’t heard back from the recipients, reminding you to follow up with them. In fact, that’s where the Boomerang name comes from — emails “boomerang” back if they haven’t received a response. Whether you’re working with people in other time zones or don’t want to forget
an important bill, Boomerang can help. Although the free version lets you Boomerang up to 10 emails each month, if you want to use it more frequently, you’ll have to pay at least $4.99 a month.
Todoist Todoist is one of the most popular to-do-list managers on the planet, so you know the associated browser extension for Chrome will be equally capable and polished. Essentially, the plug-in brings your lists right into your inbox for easier access and management. You can, for example, turn emails into tasks that need to be completed and receive reminders about them. The extension also lets you view your current tasks with your emails still on-screen and share task details with others. The extension, like Todoist itself, is free to use, but if you’d like extra features like location-based notifications and project tracking charts, you’ll have to pay $28.99 a year for a premium plan.
WiseStamp Don’t settle for dull-looking email signatures — WiseStamp quickly and easily adds flair to the ends of your messages. It works inside any browser, giving your emails a little edge when it comes to standing out in a crowded inbox. With this extension, you can add web links, photos, and even snippets of your social media feeds to the bottom of each message. The service is free, but for $6 per month you can get a Pro account that gives you access to premium templates, as well as the ability to create multiple signatures.
Inbox Pause The simple and useful Inbox Pause comes from the same developers behind Boomerang, and should work in any modern browser. It lets you hit a big blue Pause button to stop the flow of incoming emails. When you’re trying to avoid distractions while working on a single task, the ability to hit pause can be vital. Pauses can happen manually, or you can set them to occur on a set schedule. You can even specify certain senders who are allowed to break through the wall of silence — just in case there are important messages that you won’t want to miss. Like Boomerang, Inbox Pause costs nothing.
Password Alert Google built this free Chrome extension itself, designing Password Alert to add extra protection against any phishing emails — messages containing links designed to trick you into entering your Google account details on fraudulent websites — that might find their way into your inbox. This plug-in creates a barrier against phishing attacks: If you do enter your Google credentials into a non-Google website, it will flash a warning at you. And if that fails, and you accidentally compromise your personal information, it lets you immediately change your Google password. www.cpmagazine.net

DRIFTING FOR YOUR LIL CRAZY!!!
fter the overwhelming success of Razor’s Crazy Cart among the kids aged around 9 years, Razor Inc. one of the most reliable and trusted brands globally has come up with a new battery operated cart for the young riders known as Razor Jr. Lil Crazy Cart. The new Jr. Lil Crazy Cart is exclusively available at Fantasy World. If your child is a young rider, aged 3 years and above and weighs max of 20kg, he/ she can truly enjoy the Jr. Lil crazy cart. When the big Crazy cart was first introduced in the Kuwait market, it created a lot of buzz not because it was like a regular Go kart, but this cart would allow you to drift, and that caught a lot of attraction. The Crazy Cart became the talk of the town among the older kids (especially boys) as they were introduced to the fun and adventurous through the world of drifting. Fantasy World in Kuwait confirmed the success of this product as they sold hundreds of Crazy Carts and termed it as one of the bestselling toys in Kuwait. Keeping the same “fun and adventure” in mind, Razor has now introduced the Jr. Lil Crazy cart for the young riders who thrive to become as good as their brothers/cousins when it comes to drifting. Jr. Crazy Cart accelerates with pedal operated engine that gives a speed of 3km/h and an excellent steering wheel that allows Drifting turns and slides ensuring the safety of the little

FASHION: CAN IT BE FAST AND FRIENDLY?

T
he damage we, as human beings, are causing to the environment is becoming more apparent and more concerning every year. By destroying the rain forest, we are misplacing thousands of animals, plants and birds and, in turn, threatening the world’s biodiversity. By polluting the ocean with plastic, we are sabotaging marine life as well as contaminating the food chain. And, by driving cars fuelled by petrol or diesel, we are contributing to greenhouse gases and aiding global warming. It’s a subject that has dominated headlines for some time and which requires urgent attention if we are to protect and preserve our planet. Whilst action is required by world leaders in order to tackle this global, catastrophic issue, there are certain things that we, as individuals, can do to help. Using less plastic is, of course, the obvious solution although avoiding it altogether is virtually impossible. So, where the purchase of plastic is necessary, the proper disposal of it is vital. But there are other, less obvious, things we can do to clean up our act and reduce our carbon footprint. I’m not talking about taking the bus instead of your car, or reducing the number of flights you take each year, or even fixing solar panels to your roof (although all of those things would be beneficial). I’m talking about ethical fashion. Believe it not, the fashion industry is the second largest contributor to global landfill. Thanks to the huge amount of clothes we throw out, textiles are now a key source of greenhouse gas emissions with an estimated £30 billion worth of clothing going to landfill each year. Knowing Kuwait as I do, I suspect a significant contribution comes from our very own Gulf state. So, what can we do about it? Well, buying less is the most obvious answer. How many of us have clothes in our wardrobe we have never worn, or have only worn once? Smart shopping is essential if we are to tackle this damaging throwaway attitude. We should only buy the clothes we need and approach our clothing purchases the same as we do our diet; in other words, with emphasis on natural sources. Avoid non-biodegradables such as nylon and polyester and opt for natural alternatives instead. Materials like organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, recycled polyester, linen and organic wool may be more expensive but they are less harmful to the environment. They feel good too. Study the labels before buying and, where possible, research the production processes.

Good On You, the ethical fashion app, rates brands based on their human, animal and environmental cost, encouraging you to ‘wear the change you want to see.’ Fashion, by its very nature, changes with the seasons. The key is, therefore, to buy better. The better the quality, the longer it will last. It’s believed that by wearing one item of clothing at least thirty times, individuals are supporting a sustainable future. Fast, cheap fashion may seem the ideal solution in order to keep up with ever-changing trends, but it’s not just the financial cost that needs to be considered. The cost to our environment is far greater. Obviously, there comes a time when we must dispose of our clothes but throwing them away is not the way to do it. Donating them to charity is one way of reducing clothing landfill. Depending on the charity, they will either sell them to raise funds for good causes or donate them directly to those in need. Alternatively, you can gift them to someone less fortunate than yourself. If you prefer, you could sell the clothes. There are various on-line auction sites encouraging others to buy your unwanted clothes and, in turn, allowing you to recoup some of the original cost. Bearing in mind it takes 1,800 gallons of water to make one single pair of jeans, extending the life of your denims would certainly be prudent. There is, however, another way of prolonging the life of your clothes. Swapping them with your friends is an ideal way of avoiding their premature arrival at landfill. This increasingly popular practice is now widely considered as the perfect scenario when it comes to saving money as well as the planet. Cocktail dresses and ball gowns are the most popular items when it comes to ‘shwapping,’ a term/practice originally invented by Oxfam and M&S, designed to make it easier to give your unwanted clothes a second life. Another option to consider is rental. Whilst I’ve yet to see evidence of this in Kuwait, the number of clothing hire outlets in the UK and the US is growing rapidly. It’s understood that almost a third of UK shoppers are willing to rent their clothes in an effort to reduce clothing landfill. The increased awareness of the environmental impact of typical high street, fast fashion brands has enabled ethically minded entrepreneurs to capitalize on new attitudes and provide a positive alternative to fashion conscious, yet environmentally aware, shoppers. Let’s hope it doesn’t take too long for Kuwait to follow suit.

WHILE ON VACATION
etting away from reality is good for the soul and escaping from the usual workout routine is good for the body. While exercising consistently is important for building endurance, conditioning your body and losing weight, there almost always comes a time when you have to take a break. You may be surprised to learn that taking a few days or a full week off from your training won't necessarily hurt the gains you've made. Many serious exercisers and athletes regularly schedule a week off every 8-12 weeks. Sometimes it's good for the average exerciser to take extra days off to get rid of every bit of fatigue in their body. The great news is, it takes a lot more than a week off to undo all of your hard work, so don't be afraid to take a break and enjoy your vacation. Taking a few days or a week off may be just what you need to get back to your workouts with more energy and enthusiasm. And remember, you don't have to be completely inactive. This may be the perfect time
to try activities you usually don't have time for. By trying something different and freeing yourself from your routine, you open your mind to new ways to move your body, have fun and keep your body fit while you're on vacation. Leave the routine and the heart-rate monitor at home and try walking on the beach, beach volleyball, surfing, swimming, snorkeling, leisurely bike rides, hiking, golf, tennis or even shopping. Okay, maybe shopping isn't the highest intensity activity but if it’s your activity of choice, make it count by walking fast or taking the stairs. The most important thing is to enjoy your time and vacation the way you want and avoid beating yourself up for not doing the regular workout and not going to the gym. “A vacation is having nothing to do and all day to do it in.” Robert Orben Be kind and authentic to others and to yourself. www.cpmagazine.net

FAST WAYS TO PROMOTE A PRODUCT
Nada Al-Muzaini
Promoting a brand in the past was a challenge as the only advertising method was print advertising in newspapers and on billboards, flyers etc. Unfortunately, it was difficult to gather data or business insights from print media. However, with the help of digital marketing we can define the product marketing strategy to help us identify our ROI (return on investment) along with business insights and feedback. However, people still believe that the best marketing method is word of mouth. Whilst this might be true, people still like to see or hear about the product through various different ways. With this in mind, there are many efficient ways to promote your brand including the following:1.Influencer Marketing Influencer marketing is the best way to promote your brand to a large audience. However, there is always a risk using this particular strategy as they might have fake followers, low engagement etc. That said, some influencers work really hard to achieve a promotional visual feed with a high engagement level, particularly when it comes to lifestyle brands (makeup, clothes, travel etc).
2.Competition This is an efficient, easy method to attract your audience. Arranging a competition (e.g. free giveaways) using your social media channels and/or collaborating with other shops or groups of influencers has proved to be a successful strategy. It helps to promote your product and increase the number of followers. The use of hashtags can help with brand loyalty.
3.Digital Marketing Probably the most cost effective way to promote your brand is to use digital marketing platforms such Facebook, Instagram, Google and many more. This method is cost effective and, thanks to technology, provides business insights including patterns of customer behavior. It also allows you to identify which visual promotion has the most relevance when it comes 26

to attraction and engagement.
4.Events Organizing an event for the launch of a new product or celebrating an occasion such as a business anniversary is the best way to create a buzz within the market. However, it’s important to invite a number of celebrities as this helps to increase brand awareness and create a fuss about the event.
5.Send Emails Email marketing is another efficient way to boost awareness of a product without spending a lot of money. For it to be successful, you need a good tag line in the subject as this is what will attract people to read the email. Similarly, email marketing is a great strategy to use to inform them about new products and sales opportunities. In conclusion, there are many ways to promote your product. Not all strategies have the same results and what is best for one product may not be the best for another. Whatever your product, you need a solid marketing plan with both short and long term goals, incorporating a number of efficient marketing methods.

There are a thousand ways to move around the Bel Paese and live an experience in close contact with these places and their inhabitants, discovering their warmth, friendliness and hospitality. Not to mention artisan traditions, typical tastes and tranquil environments. Thanks to the Peninsula’s temperate climate, Italy is one of the most fascinating and most welcoming places in the world, and travellers can enjoy it any time of the year. LOVE IS THE SOUNDTRACK OF PUGLIA Where: Masseria Torre Maiza, Puglia. Set in the charming area of Savelleteri di Fasano, along the Adriatic coast and surrounded by ancient olive groves, Rocco Forte´s Masseria Torre Maiza is an original farmhouse dating back to the 16th century. The intimate 40 rooms and suites resort has been entirely renovated by Director of Design, Olga Polizzi, blending her colourful prints with local white linens and terracotta for a light and elegant feel with rustic tones. Heavy carpets and wicker furniture have been used throughout the suites, many of which have their own private patios and original fireplaces for an added touch of romance on chillier evenings. At the heart of the resort is the local cuisine, artfully interpreted by Rocco Forte’s Creative Director of Food, Maestro Fulvio Pierangelini, as if it were a grand local home using a feast of natural products from the Masseria’s own gardens and orchard. Pierangelini’s artful menus are served by candlelight in the vaulted dining room or open air, whether in the gardens or under the stone colonnade surrounding the 20 metre pool. Alongside the pretty pool (which has underwater music), there’s also a small Aveda spa with hot tub and steam room. Treatments range from olive oil-based full-body treatments to Thai massage. Other activities include cycling to a nearby burrata farm and olive oil producer, golfing, yoga and Puglian cookery classes at sister hotel Masseria Torre Coccaro. www.roccofortehotels.com

SOUTHERN ITALY’S MOST SPECTACULAR COASTAL HOTEL Where: Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel & Spa, Amalfi Coast. Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel & Spa is a former monastery that opened in May 2012, following a huge restoration undertaken by the owner, Bianca Sharma, who brought the property in 1999. Bianca caught sight of the property by chance when travelling in the area and immediately fell in love with the property, which offers one of the most dramatic locations and views in the world. After acquiring the building, she worked closely with a local team of architects, engineers and historical authorities to transform the former monastery into a luxury hotel and spa whilst maintaining the integrity of the building. Sleep in one of the hotel’s 20 suites, all of which face the sea and are named after herbs grown in the hotel’s herb garden. The vaulted ceilings and arched windows of the nun’s rooms and refectory have been carefully preserved and are cleverly linked together with en-suite bathrooms to create truly contemporary spaces. Some of the suites offer private terraces overlooking the sea, ideal for romantic breakfasts and pre-dinner drinks. Monastero’s extraordinary spa was designed to fit within the original 17th century vaulted ceilings and rustic stonewalls. Feast on Michelin star cuisine at Ristorante Il Refettorio, the hotel’s exceptional restaurant led by Executive Chef, Christoph Bob. It has original vaulted ceilings and offers cuisine from the Campania region. Menus change with the season and dishes feature fresh seafood delivered that same day by the local fishermen, locally produced olive oil, and organically grown vegetables and herbs straight from the hotel’s garden. www.monasterosantarosa.com

aola Sakr is a Beirut-based designer with a passion for photography and art. She started her studio after graduating with honors from l'Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts with a Product Design bachelor. In parallel, she worked as a product designer at PsLab before deciding to focus solely on her projects ‘There’s always the purpose of bringing a little something to the world, always trying to do a little good: whether it is environmental, social or simply something for the soul.’ Being very passionate about research and experimentation, she believes in constant innovation and simplicity. This shows in her recurrent approach to material experimentation and innovation in her projects; often turning the medium into the message. In the past few years, her projects were exhibited around the Middle East and Europe. She was awarded in September 2018 the ‘Rising Talents Award’ alongside five other Lebanese designers by Maison & Objet.

Balance, 2013 ‘The aim of this project was to create a meaningful composition formed by three indispensable elements that are each required for the object to exist. The purpose was to develop an art installation with the same principles we follow while designing a product: each element is essential and justified, giving no room for unnecessary added elements or aesthetics.’ Material description: Dismantled engine, reassembled using live ivy instead of the original screws. Morning Ritual, 2016 (and still ongoing) Morning Ritual is a series of biodegradable containers made of coffee grounds and newspaper waste. Inspired by Paola’s childhood memories watching her father sip on Arabic coffee while reading the newspaper, this product draws our attention to the fact that we often generate waste before our day even begins. After coffee ground waste is collected from local coffee shops, it is mixed with newspaper pulp and a natural binding agent. The mixture is delicately molded by hand, and the final colour and scent of each item are the result of the various types of coffee used. www.cpmagazine.net

Quantum, 2018 Quantum is the fruit of Paola’s very first experimentations with pottery and the beginning of a larger collection. The idea was to explore the vast world of a very ambiguous and unpredictable material that offers infinite possibilities in terms of forms, functions and treatment. ‘My approach to clay was more architectural rather than traditional and organic. I found the combination of planned constructions with accidental reactions of the material to be very interesting. There is so much beauty in seeing a material behave and have a life of its own and most of all, accept it with all its imperfections.’ The constructions of the pieces were made progressively and in multiple steps; combining wheel turning and hand-building techniques. The repetitive modules and lines are inspired by brutalist architecture and the terracota’s raw and natural feel makes a pleasant tactile interaction with human skin. Material: baked red and white clay.

HOW TO PACK YOUR OOTD'S DURING SUMMER TRAVELS
44
AUGUST 2019
Travelling? Super fun! Packing your suitcase? Not so much. Ladies, admit it, we all need at least 15 outfits to survive a 3-day, 2-night trip. And did I mention a selection of shoes, bags and accessories? And let’s not forget makeup and skincare supplies too. So the question still remains, how do you fit your whole closet in a 20-kilogram piece of luggage?
#3: Roll vs. Fold
“The answer is really simple. If you can’t pack light, pack smart,” says Lady Baltazar, a Dubai-based fashion and beauty influencer. “I love dressing up as much as I love travelling. And what I’ve learned after taking countless trips and hundreds of OOTD’s is to be really smart with what and how you pack.”
#4: Travel-sized everything
Getting ready for your next summer trip? Then these travel packing hints are great for you:
#1: Plan your outfits Number one, and probably the most important part, is to plan what you’re going to wear for the duration of your trip. Planning doesn’t only allow you to pack smart, it saves you time and energy on selecting your outfit one by one during your trip.
#2: Use packing cubes Packing cubes serve as your instant travel drawers while on a holiday. It helps you sort and organize your items according to type. You can easily pack your accessories, gadgets or toiletries without having to worry about forgetting where you actually placed them. Again, it saves you time and keeps your suitcase neat and tidy.
It’s an old-age debate of which is actually better for packing. The answer is roll and fold. Rolling is great for thinner pieces of clothing like shirts and dresses as it saves space and helps make the clothes wrinkle-free. However for bulkier items such as sweaters, it is best to fold them rather than to roll.
Toiletries can sometimes take a lot of space in our suitcase. The best solution? Bring travel-sized products or transfer everything you need into travelsized bottles. This way, you get to bring all your beauty essentials with you on your trip without sacrificing your favourite hand cream or hair styling cream.
#5: Wear bulkier items Another tip you can try is to actually wear heavier or bulkier items instead of packing them. Got a cute coat you really need to get that perfect OOTD (outfit of the day) shot? Wear it to the airport; it can get pretty cold anyway. How about those bulky sneakers you just can’t leave behind? Time to flaunt it! However, if it feels uncomfortable to wear, you’ll have to think twice especially if you’re taking a long-haul flight.
#6: Weigh it If you don’t want the hassle of unpacking and repacking again in the middle of the airport just because of overweight baggage, make sure to weigh your suitcase before actually checking your bags in at the airport. Can you imagine leaving a carefully planned dress behind? Definitely not!

Who runs the world...Water
Fast fashion is drowning the planet and consumers need to make the ultimate change
46
AUGUST 2019
Did you know that it takes approximately 1,800 gallons of water to make a single pair of your favourite jeans? Mass market fashion brands are the biggest culprit with throwaway trends and this has led to the fashion industry contributing to 20% of global wastewater and 10% of global carbon emissions. However, consumers are the second biggest culprit, throwing away an average of 70 pounds of clothes every year, all of which can be recycled. Ultimately, the change is in our hands and what we decide to put in them. If we are asked how much water we consume daily, we often refer to our recommended eight glasses of drinking water or the water we use to have a shower or wash the dishes, but never do we consider all the water used to manufacture our clothes. Stephen Leahy, the author of ‘Your Water Footprint: The shocking facts about how much water we use to make everyday products’, proclaims some shocking truths. “The average American's daily water footprint is a whopping 2,115 gallons (8,000 litres). Since 1 litre weighs 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds), that's the weight of four cars you have to haul if you get all that water from a well”. The 2017 edition of the ‘Pulse of the Fashion industry’ by Global Fashion Agenda revealed that in 2015, the industry consumed a staggering 79 billion cubic metres of water, a figure expected to increase by 50% in 2030. One of the reasons producing seemingly simple garments greatly depletes our global water reserves is that most of these pieces are made from cotton - a famously thirsty crop. Pile on the fact that much of it is cultivated in parts of the world suffering from water stress and we have a serious problem. The rabbit hole of sustainability and inciting meaningful, powerful change to production and consumerist habits is not one easily grappled with. Yet, one thing is clear, as individuals, we must make substantial daily changes to ensure the preservation of our water resources, such as taking shorter showers, turning the water off when not in use, but also, purchasing items for long term use. The future of this planet does not lie solely in our hands, fashion houses have to take responsibility for the part they play in the depletion of our environment and take measures to try and protect it. A way this can be done is by using more eco-friendly or recyclable materials in their production practices. At Joseph & Alexander, we have a deep profound love and respect for the ocean, that is why we have decided to use fabrics made from recycled plastic bottles found in the ocean and transform them into quirky, environmentally-inspired short designs. Conceptualised to ignite curiosity within the minds of its youngest wearers, each piece is designed to spark an educational conversation around critical world issues. Championing environmental action is at the heart of the brand. Operating consciously using recycled fabric from ocean plastics, eco-friendly ink, and reusable packaging, each collection depicts awareness-raising narratives of minimising our environmental footprint and having fun whilst doing so.

PHOTOGRAPHER: ISABELLE PARADIS
Givenchy Beauty Launches Autumn 2019 Collection In a world focused primarily on an image’s aesthetic qualities, I offer a way to return to its source—light itself.
ESSENCE OF SHADOWS examines the presence of light within shadow.
The better part of human nature only shines out when it is contrasted with darkness. Our joys, sorrows, and life itself is nothing more than the interplay between light and dark. Living a balanced life is the only way to manage this precarious give-and-take. And if darkness does come to dominate, it only makes the good memories shine that much brighter. A solid foundation makes it possible to maintain the course and sometimes even enjoy a few happy missteps along the way. Beauty follows the exact same rules. It’s a question of balance, choice, desire, and having the right tools to see it through. My 2019 autumn collection is inspired by the desire to be. To shine. To make yourself happy. These same goals doubtless drove the first portrait photographers as well. Analogue film, which is both rigorous and flexible, provided the inspiration for this collection. It requires technical mastery, and yet is subject to the twists and turns of creativity. While digital photography makes it possible to take things further, analogue film was governed by these requirements from the very beginning. ESSENCE OF SHADOWS interprets the power of light through a series of dark prisms. 50
AUGUST 2019
PRISMISSIME - Nine-colour eyeshadow palette In a classic dark room, shadows are created with light, and light emerges from shadow. With the new generation of PRISMISSIME, which offers an easy application method and an effective way to structure your gaze, the interplay between dark and light has now reached the eyes. This eyeshadow palette is a magic square of nine colours that play with the reflection and absorption of light. Pearlescent pigments of varying sizes offer multiple levels of shine. Choose from three-dimensional matte, satin, and metallic finishes. The new PRISMISSIME formula is talc free and created through an injection and evaporation process. This light-wearing, long-lasting (12 hours*) and innovative formula delivers intense, high impact colour. As Nicolas Degennes explains, “The colour doesn’t budge!” One edition PRISMISSIME No.1 Essence of Greys features nine colours that recreate the pointillist range of greys seen in analogue film. The second PRISMISSIME No.2 Essence of Browns combines various tones of warm sepia that recall the colours used in the very first photographs. Take a tip from Nicolas Degennes and apply Essence of Browns (No. 2) atop Essence of Greys (No. 1). * Instrumental tests with 20 women
ROUGE INTERDIT VINYL - Extreme shine This autumn show off your light and dark side by sporting a non-conventional nude lipstick. Two limited-edition shades were created for the ESSENCE OF SHADOWS collection: ROUGE INTERDIT VINYL No. 20 Shadow Pink, a natural pink beige, and ROUGE INTERDIT VINYL No. 19 Shadow Purple, a pink pearlescent shade that captures light over a grey base. The result is a sheer, light, reflective and pearlescent layer of colour. Colour and light are created with a minimum amount of product that’s a cinch to apply. Whether you opt for a quick boost or a sparkling pop of colour, turn your lips into a canvas for self-expression.

The Hottest New Book Releases of August
PROGNOSIS: A MEMOIR OF MY BRAIN by Sarah Vallance
When Sarah Vallance is thrown from a horse and suffers a jarring blow to the head, she believes she’s walked away unscathed. The next morning, things take a sharp turn as she’s led from work to the emergency room. By the end of the week, a neurologist delivers a devastating prognosis: Sarah suffered a traumatic brain injury that has caused her IQ to plummet, with no hope of recovery. Her brain has irrevocably changed. Afraid of judgment and deemed no longer fit for work, Sarah isolates herself from the outside world. She spends months at home, with her dogs as her only source of companionship, battling a personality she no longer recognizes and her shock and rage over losing simple functions she’d taken for granted.
CONSENT: A MEMOIR OF UNWANTED ATTENTION by Donna Freitas
"Consent is compelling and disturbing and a welcome expansion of our urgent conversation" Rebecca Traister Donna Freitas has lived two lives. In one life, she is a wellpublished author and respected scholar who has traveled around the country speaking about Title IX, consent, religion, and sex on college campuses. In the other, she is a victim, a woman who suffered and suffers still because she was stalked by her graduate professor for more than two years. As a doctoral candidate, Freitas loved asking big questions, challenging established theories and sinking her teeth into sacred texts. She felt at home in the library, and safe in the book-lined offices of scholars whom she admired.
THINGS YOU SAVE IN A FIRE by Katherine Center
Cassie Hanwell was born for emergencies. As one of the only female firefighters in her Texas firehouse, she's seen her fair share of them, and she's excellent at dealing with other people's tragedies. But when her estranged and ailing mother asks her to uproot her life and move to Boston, it's an emergency of a kind Cassie never anticipated. The tough, old-school Boston firehouse is as different from Cassie's old job as it could possibly be. Hazing, a lack of funding, and poor facilities mean that the firemen aren't exactly thrilled to have a "lady" on the crew, even one as competent and smart as Cassie. Except for the handsome rookie, who doesn't seem to mind having Cassie around.
THE MIRACLE AND TRAGEDY OF THE DIONNE QUINTUPLETS
A DOOR IN THE EARTH by Amy Waldman
When they were born on May 28, 1934, weighing a grand total of just over 13 pounds, no one expected them to live so much as an hour. Overnight, Yvonne, Annette, Cécile, Émilie, and Marie Dionne captivated the world, defying medical history with every breath they took. In an effort to protect them from hucksters and showmen, the Ontario government took custody of the five identical babies, sequestering them in a private, custom-built hospital across the road from their family — and then, in a stunning act of hypocrisy, proceeded to exploit them for the next nine years. The Dionne Quintuplets became a more popular attraction than Niagara Falls, ogled through one-way screens by sightseers as they splashed in their wading pool at the center of a tourist hotspot known as Quintland. Their faces sold everything from Baby Ruth candy bars to Colgate toothpaste.
Parveen Shamsa, a college senior in search of a calling, feels pulled between her charismatic and mercurial anthropology professor and the comfortable but predictable Afghan-American community in her Northern California hometown. When she discovers a bestselling book called Mother Afghanistan, a memoir by humanitarian Gideon Crane that has become a bible for American engagement in the country, she is inspired. Galvanized by Crane's experience, Parveen travels to a remote village in the land of her birth to join the work of his charitable foundation. When she arrives, however, Crane's maternity clinic, while grandly equipped, is mostly unstaffed. The villagers do not exhibit the gratitude she expected to receive. And Crane's memoir appears to be littered with mistakes, or outright fabrications.

THE WORLD DOESN'T REQUIRE YOU: STORIES
I'M TELLING THE TRUTH, BUT I'M LYING: ESSAYS
Established by the leaders of the country’s only successful slave revolt in the mid-nineteenth century, Cross River still evokes the fierce rhythms of its founding. In lyrical prose and singular dialect, a saga beats forward that echoes the fables carried down for generations—like the screecher birds who swoop down for their periodic sacrifice, and the water women who lure men to wet deaths. Among its residents—wildly spanning decades, perspectives, and species—are David Sherman, a struggling musician who just happens to be God’s last son; Tyrone, a ruthless PhD candidate, whose dissertation about a childhood game ignites mayhem in the neighboring, once-segregated town of Port Yooga; and Jim, an alltoo-obedient robot who serves his Master. As the book builds to its finish with Special Topics in Loneliness Studies, a fully-realized novella, two unhinged professors grapple with hugely different ambitions, and the reader comes to appreciate the intricacy of the world Scott has created—one where fantasy and reality are eternally at war.
A deeply personal collection of essays exploring NigerianAmerican author Bassey Ikpi’s experiences navigating Bipolar II and anxiety throughout the course of her life. Bassey Ikpi was born in Nigeria in 1976. Four years later, she and her mother joined her father in Stillwater, Oklahoma —a move that would be anxiety ridden for any child, but especially for Bassey. Her early years in America would come to be defined by tension: an assimilation further complicated by bipolar II and anxiety that would go undiagnosed for decades. By the time she was in her early twenties, Bassey was a spoken word artist and traveling with HBO's Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam, channeling her experiences into art. But something wasn’t right—beneath the façade of the confident performer, Bassey’s mental health was in a precipitous decline, culminating in a breakdown that resulted in hospitalization and a diagnosis of Bipolar II.

THE BELLS OF OLD TOKYO: MEDITATIONS ON TIME AND A CITY by Anna Sherman
From 1632 until 1854, Japan’s rulers restricted contact with foreign countries, a near isolation that fostered a remarkable and unique culture that endures to this day. In hypnotic prose and sensual detail, Anna Sherman describes searching for the great bells by which the inhabitants of Edo, later called Tokyo, kept the hours in the shoguns’ city. An exploration of Tokyo becomes a meditation not just on time, but on history, memory, and impermanence. Through Sherman’s journeys around the city and her friendship with the owner of a small, exquisite cafe, who elevates the making and drinking of coffee to an art-form, The Bells of Old Tokyo follows haunting voices through the labyrinth that is the Japanese capital: an old woman remembers escaping from the American firebombs of World War II. A scientist builds the most accurate clock in the world, a clock that will not lose a second in five billion years. The head of the Tokugawa shogunal house reflects on the destruction of his grandfathers’ city: “A lost thing is lost. To chase it leads to darkness.”
The Turn of the Key
by Ruth Ware From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of In a Dark, Dark Wood, The Woman in Cabin 10, The Lying Game, and The Death of Mrs. Westaway comes Ruth Ware’s highly anticipated fifth novel. When she stumbles across the ad, she’s looking for something else completely. But it seems like too good an opportunity to miss—a live-in nannying post, with a staggeringly generous salary. And when Rowan Caine arrives at Heatherbrae House, she is smitten— by the luxurious “smart” home fitted out with all modern conveniences, by the beautiful Scottish Highlands, and by this picture-perfect family. What she doesn’t know is that she’s stepping into a nightmare—one that will end with a child dead and herself in prison awaiting trial for murder. Writing to her lawyer from prison, she struggles to explain the unravelling events that led to her incarceration. It wasn’t just the constant surveillance from the cameras installed around the house, or the malfunctioning technology that woke the household with booming music, or turned the lights off at the worst possible time. It wasn’t just the girls, who turned out to be a far cry from the immaculately behaved model children she met at her interview. It wasn’t even the way she was left alone for weeks at a time, with no adults around apart from the enigmatic handyman, Jack Grant.
Ruth Ware
Ruth Ware grew up in Sussex, on the south coast of England. After graduating from Manchester University she moved to Paris, before settling in North London. She has worked as a waitress, a bookseller, a teacher of English as a foreign language and a press officer. She is married with two small children, and In a Dark, Dark Wood was her début thriller. www.cpmagazine.net

WRITING MOVIE
WRONGS moviewrongs.com by: JIM WEST
Directed by Jon Watts | Written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers
A
ction superhero comedy is a genre that lends itself to goofball setups and often sight gags. Spiderman has long been the franchise that has kept a good balance of the goofiness of being a growing teen with superhuman abilities with a sense of moral justice torn between saving the day and protecting family and friends. Now comedy is hard. The two writers had a tall order with trying to give audiences some humour following the events of Avenger’s Endgame and Infinity War. I would like to say they did well with the comedy by only missing a few beats here and there, and overall this is a decent film. So let’s swing into the story! Here come the spoilers.
The film picks up eight months after the events of Endgame and Infinity War to what people are referring to as the ‘blip’. We quickly see that Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is still heavily impacted by those events and the loss of his mentor and hero, Tony Stark. With Tony Stark gone, the world, and Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) are seeking out a new superhero to protect them. In Mexico, Nick and Maria (Cobie Smulders) discover an elemental being that gets destroyed by a new superhero, named Quentin Beck (Jake Gyllenhaal), from another dimension who is seeking revenge against the elementals that destroyed his home world. I felt this was a great way to expand upon the multiverse. I would like to have seen a flashback here of his world being destroyed and the lengths he went through to track them down. This is the first misstep with Beck’s character. Marvel has been on a decent track record with humanizing their 60
AUGUST 2019
villains, but here they miss a step and it affects the entire film. This goes back to the Iron Man 3 film with the whole switcharoo on the villain plot. Granted, they stayed true to the comic’s origins, but this is where I felt they could have changed it a bit for the sake of expanding upon the multiverse. The revenge twist is not so much a twist and it just falls flat. The ending is a surprise cliff hanger with the return of a fan favourite, J Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons), announcing to the world the identity of Spiderman. Peter’s handling of grief, new responsibilities, and the truth being discovered by his love interest MJ are all handled very well throughout the film. I would like to have seen more scenes with Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) and Happy (Jon Farveau). Making Peter feel uncomfortable would have created some neat comedic moments. I would have them take a surprise visit to the countries where Peter was enjoying a school trip. Perhaps Peter would see them taking a romantic gondola ride while fighting the water elemental. Or, have them strolling by the Eiffel Tower while Peter saves them without them knowing. This would explain Happy being close to keep tabs on Peter while trying to romance Aunt May. This, I felt, was a huge comedic misstep. Yet comedy in film is hard to write because not everyone may laugh at the jokes. For the most part, the film delivers a decent Spiderman film, but not a memorable one. Make us have compassion for the villain and give us more Happy Hogan and Aunt May. Thanks for reading ‘Writing Movie ‘WRONGS’.

THE MISSING LINK - MULLINER COMPLETELY RE-CREATES PIVOTAL 1939 BENTLEY CORNICHE
B
entley has re-created a long-lost car from its illustrious past that provides a crucial link in the history of its most important models. The ground-up rebuild of the only 1939 Corniche ever made highlights the marque’s pedigree of design and technological innovation, the breadth of skills within Mulliner’s bespoking division, and connects the fabled Embiricos 4¼ Litre and R Type Continental. The only car of its type now in existence thanks to the skills of Mulliner, the Corniche was conceived to be a high performance version of the new MkV saloon, itself a technological advance that was due to be launched in October 1939.
As Mulliner’s first historic car project, the Corniche has demonstrated the full breadth of the division’s coachbuilding and restoration skills and capabilities.
The styling of the Corniche was a radical step forward from the traditional Bentleys of the 1920s and ‘30s, introducing ‘Streamlining’ to help deliver greater speed and performance, and heavily influenced post-war models from the R Type Continental right through to the current Continental GT.
Using only the original technical drawings and the skills of the men and women of Mulliner, Bentley’s in-house bespoke and coachbuilding division, this unique Corniche has been rebuilt in Crewe using original Corniche and MkV mechanical components and a completely re-made body, identical in every detail to the original.
The original Corniche was lost in France in 1939 at the outbreak of World War II. It was extensively damaged in a traffic accident whilst undergoing road tests in France in August 1939. Sent for repairs, the chassis made it home to the Bentley plant in Derby, but the bodywork was destroyed in a bombing raid on Dieppe later in 1939 and was never seen again.
“It’s been a fantastic team effort,” said Stefan Sielaff, Design Director at Bentley and Director of Mulliner. “We have highly skilled craftsmen within Mulliner and around the rest of Bentley Motors, and they all have massive pride in what they’ve achieved with this car.”
Until now. The project was originally started several years ago by volunteers from the WO Bentley Memorial Foundation and the Sir Henry Royce Memorial Foundation, but was brought inhouse in February 2018 under the watchful eye of Chairman and Chief Executive Adrian Hallmark, who asked for it to be completed in 2019 to celebrate Bentley’s centenary. “The 1939 Corniche was a clear step in Bentley’s design language which is evident when set aside the later and now iconic R Type Continental. It is a pivotal car in the history of Bentley, demonstrating that even then, this great British marque was at the cutting edge of design and technology,” comments Hallmark. “Mulliner’s stunning recreation of the Corniche clearly demonstrates our skill in restoring the greats from Bentley’s back catalogue as well as making beautiful personalised modern Bentleys.” The project naturally fell to the Mulliner division, where since the 1970s one-off cars have been built for discerning collectors and Royalty, including two State Limousines manufactured in 2002. Today production models are adapted and built to particular customers’ exacting personal specifications.
72
AUGUST 2019
The Corniche will make its first public appearance at Salon Privé at Blenheim Palace in September and will join Bentley’s Heritage fleet, which already includes WO Bentley’s 8 Litre and the Birkin Team Blower, to be used and exhibited at events around the world.
Resurrecting an icon Many of the parts that had been produced to make further Corniche models were kept until the early 1970s before being sold off to specialists and enthusiasts. Then, in 2001, automotive historian and former Bentley director Ken Lea decided to try to use original parts as the basis for a recreation of the Corniche. The project was based in Derby, with volunteers gathering information and parts to assemble the chassis. In 2008, with the project out of money, Bentley Motors provided an injection of funds, and work started on the ash frame and aluminium bodywork with coachbuilders Ashley & James in Lymington, Hampshire. The body was created from the outline drawings given to the project by the family of the car’s original designer, George Paulin. The project continued to make slow progress until it was brought in-house to Mulliner at
Bentley Motors at the request of new Chairman and CEO Adrian Hallmark. The project to re-create the Corniche was overseen by a team of four: Ken Lea; Robin Peel, Head of Heritage; Ian Broomhall, Mulliner Operations Manager and Glyn Davies, Mulliner Special Projects leader. Many team members from Mulliner and across the wider Bentley Motors business dedicated their personal time to work on the Corniche, and staff from other divisions joined in. The Mulsanne body-in-white team, where panels are still hand-formed, helped with final detailed finessing of panels; the paint laboratory spent many hours producing colour samples of the main body colour of Imperial Maroon and the side flash of Heather Grey from the limited descriptions available; Head of Interior Design Darren Day and his team produced CAD designs for the seats and door trims derived from detailed historical research; and the Mulliner trim team worked from the designs to create a period-appropriate interior in typical Vanvooren style, using the correct Connolly Vaumol hide, West of England cloth and the carpet from a roll discovered stored away on site. In the Mulliner workshop, Mulliner Master Carpenter Gary Bedson devised a steam booth to allow him to bend sections of wood for the interior window surrounds, often spending over an hour wreathed in steam just to attain a few degrees more curvature. Other team members worked hard to re-create the front grille, using CAD to analyse airflow and design each individual slat, which were then hand-formed by skilled metalworkers over a period of three months. Six Mulliner apprentices, one of whom even created an authentic tool tray for the boot of the Corniche, were also involved throughout the car’s time with Mulliner. Every aspect of the project received Mulliner attention. From the special paint mixes – named Imperial Maroon and Heather Grey – to the unique interior trim, the accessories such as the tool tray and even the Mulliner tread plates on the door shuts were created from scratch.
The original 1939 Corniche In the late-1930s, Greek racer André Embiricos commissioned a sporting Bentley, based on the old 4¼ Litre chassis. It was styled by talented designer Georges Paulin, and built by French coachbuilder Pourtout. Although privately commissioned, it was much-admired and secretly encouraged among Bentley engineers and management, who were convinced that the factory should produce a more sporting version of the forthcoming MkV saloon. It was agreed that the Corniche should be built to investigate the idea. It would have a lightweight chassis, built from thinner-than-standard gauge steel, fitted with a tuned version of the MkV engine matched to an overdrive gearbox created to suit. The Corniche was built as a collaboration between Bentley and third parties such as Georges Paulin, the French car designer who designed the bodywork and Carrosserie Vanvooren in Paris who made the bodywork.
After Brooklands, the Corniche went to France for road testing, but in July 1939 it was damaged by a bus and returned to Vanvooren for repairs and body improvements. When completed, on August 8, it was collected by a Bentley test driver, who headed
The car was completed by May 1939 and tried out at Brooklands race circuit, where it achieved well over 100mph – a significant improvement on the standard MkV. Streamlining had only just started to be adopted on production cars of the period, so the smooth lines of the Corniche were ahead of their time. It had at least been recognised that the huge upright radiator of a traditional Bentley adversely affected the top speed, and the smoothed nose of the Corniche was a direct reaction to that understanding. The pillarless body, with front and rear-hinged doors was also extremely innovative for the period, and the complicated curves of the front wings and the long sweeps of the rears were a long way from the typical designs of the period. In staid 1930s Britain, this was pure fantasy-made-real.
straight for the Bentley depot at Chateauroux where the testing was based. It was as he neared the HQ that a car pulled in front of the Corniche, causing the Bentley test driver to swerve and hit a tree. The car rolled onto its side, causing extensive damage. The Corniche was due to be displayed at the Earls Court and Paris motor shows later that year, so there was no time to lose. The body was removed from the chassis, and the chassis returned to Crewe, while the body went to a local repair shop in France. The Corniche body was eventually completed in France, and transported to Dieppe to be shipped home. However, an administration error at the docks caused a delay, and while the Corniche body was stored waiting to be shipped it was destroyed when Dieppe was heavily bombed during WWII. www.cpmagazine.net

vehicle. ASC applies new control logic software to the Hybrid Control Unit (HCU), which then controls the electric motor to align the rotational speeds of the engine and transmission, ultimately reducing gear shift time by 30%. With the synchronization, ASC not only improves hybrid vehicle’s acceleration performance and fuel economy, but also durability of the transmission by minimizing friction during a gear shift. Sonata is equipped with Smartstream G2.0 GDi HEV engine and 6-speed hybrid transmission. The engine’s power output is 152ps and maximum torque is 19.2kgf•m. The vehicle’s electric motor delivers power output of 38kw and maximum torque of 205 Nm. Combined system power output is 195ps and vehicle also boasts combined fuel economy of 20.1km/l. Continuing from Sonata, the hybrid has latest high tech convenience features such as Digital Key.
Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist Sonata is fitted with Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) which is capable of pedestrian detection, an advanced active safety feature that alerts drivers to emergency situations, and braking autonomously if required. Using front radar and front view camera sensors, FCA operates in three stages. Initially warning the driver visually and acoustically, it assesses the nature of the collision danger and can apply increasing amounts of braking force to avoid a collision or minimize damage when a collision is unavoidable. The system is activated when a vehicle, pedestrian or cyclist is sensed in front of the car. Lane Follow Assist Lane Follow Assist automatically adjusts steering to help keep the vehicle centered in its lane of travel. LFA can keep the vehicle centered at speeds between 0 and 145 kilometers per hour on both highways and city streets.
PORSCHE INTRODUCES NEW 911 CARRERA COUPÉ AND 911 CARRERA CABRIOLET
P
orsche is expanding its eighth-generation range with the addition of the 911 Carrera*. The new sports car is being launched as a Coupé and Cabriolet, and generates 385 hp (283 kW) from its 3.0-litre, six-cylinder boxer engine with biturbo charging. The Carrera is the entry-level 911 model and offers 15 hp (11 kW) more power output than its predecessor. It shares a similar range of standard features to the 911 Carrera S. These include a 10.9-inch touchscreen display, comprehensive connectivity and innovative assistance systems, such as the Porsche Wet Mode that ensures even safer handling. The 911 Carrera is distinguished by smaller sized wheels, brakes and tailpipe covers on the exhaust system. As with the Carrera S model, the engine, chassis and brakes are designed for exclusive sportiness. The 3.0-litre, six-cylinder boxer engine of the 911 Carrera generates power largely through the smaller wheel diameters of the turbines and compressors that feature in the new turbochargers. Power transmission is handled by the new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK). This enables the 911 Carrera Coupé to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, with a top speed of 293 km/h. The optional Sport Chrono Package shaves a further 0.2 seconds off the sprint time. The combined fuel consumption (NEDC-correlated) of the Coupé is 9.0 l/100 km, while the Cabriolet records this figure as configuration features 20-inch wheels with 295/35 ZR tyres at the rear. Stopping power is provided on both axles 9.2 l/100 km. by 330-millimetre brake discs with black, four-piston monobloc fixed callipers. The driving dynamics set-up includes 235/40 ZR tyres The new Porsche 911 Carrera Coupé and 911 Carrera Cabriolet are now available for order. Price details can be on 19-inch alloy wheels on the front axle. The mixed tyre obtained at the nearest Porsche Centre. www.cpmagazine.net 75
