DECEMBER 2016
Stunning shots taken from land, sea and sky captured the breathtaking moments in the event that was organized professionally in line with high safety measures. After two hours of roaring motors on sand and sea, the event was concluded with crowning the top three winning teams on the podium, awarding the winning team two trophies in addition to a Kawasaki 300 LX Jet Ski. The event has yielded a large success under the organization of Basel Salem Al-Sabah Motorsport Club and the sponsorship of Nissan Al-Babtain, Public Authority for Youth and Sports, Kawasaki, Pirelli, GoPro, Acqua Eva, Marina Mall, Al Anbaa Newspaper, Kuwait Times Newspaper, and Studentalk Magazine.
Prizes and Medals Bader Al Qanna’i and Mohammad Al-Ali took the second place while Bader Al Khalfan and Fahad Al Mousallam won the third. As for prizes, gold, silver and bronze medals awarded to the first 3 winning teams; the first team were handed trophies by Ahmad Al Qallaf, Treasurer of Basel Salem Al-Sabah Club, the second team were awarded by Mohammad Burbayea, world Jet Ski champion and Red Bull athlete who won the championship’s first season in 2014. Mohammad Jaffar, Red Bull athlete and motocross champion, was honored to award the third team with medals.
First Round As the scheduled time for the start of the race inched closer, crowds of spectators spread across Marina Beach to witness with extreme eagerness - the flow of the race in which the 16 teams participated. Quad bikers and Jet Ski riders kicked off the first round, each Quad biker was required to finish four laps then hand the key to his teammate so he would finish, in turn, four laps on his Jet Ski and come back fast. The winners were shortlisted based on the time they spent in finishing the laps. Quad Bike laps in this round were both thrilling and difficult. The greatest challenge lied in the second to last curve that constituted an obstacle to all participants; it was almost certainly the hardest part of the race given the difficulty of crossing it with high speed.
both winners of the first place for demonstrating good leadership skills which turned the race’s final moments to their favor.” Mohammad Jaffar, Red Bull athlete and member of the supervising committee also praised the competitors’ good discipline, saying that he was astonished by the level of thrill and challenge throughout the race’s three stages, until the moment when the name of the winning team of Red Bull Bar Bahr’s second season was announced.
Electrifying Shows As part of “Red Bull Bar Bahr” event, professional Red Bull athlete Brian Capper on his Trial Bike and Abdul Aziz Matar on his Jet Ski performed two electrifying shows, adding more flashes of excitement to the spectators and to the event as a whole.
The Race Village Beside the relay race, visitors and onlookers following up on the race were attracted by tents in the racing village mostly displayed by sponsors like Kawasaki, GoPro, Acqua Eva, Chilli Beans, Artspace and Nissan Al-Babtain. The latter organized a test drive competition offering a chance to enter the draws for cash prizes.
Second Round Some competitors failed to qualify to the second and so, the racers built momentum and geared up for the second round to the sound of the rousing music and applause. The competition kicked off and the whistle signaled the start of the race. Having acquired the know-how during the first round, the participating teams raced more wildly this time knowing how the land bumps and water curves should be crossed best. As the time set for this round was over, 6 teams out of 12 qualified and made it worthily to the final decisive round in which the fastest team, on both land and water tracks, shall be granted the “Red Bull Bar Bahr” title.
The Final Round During this round, the 6 remaining teams were vying for the last battle on the shores of Marina Beach at the end of a beautiful sunny day. In a tough competition between the 6 teams, the supervising committee, the cameras monitoring the race and the crowd estimating the potential winner, the battle raged between Boushaiba – Al Baz team versus Al Qanna’i - Al Ali team. The Quad Bike race kicked off with a high drive to score the fastest timing. Boushaiba and his teammate won the first place, leaving the third place medal for Al Khalfan and Al Mousallam. When asked about his victory in Red Bull Bar Bahr, Meshari Boushaiba said: “I am happy to have won this title. I managed to meet the required timings in the middle of an exciting competition against Fahad Al Mousallam and Mohammad AlAli. I succeeded, along with my teammate Mohammad Albaz, in clinching the title and thus taking the first place after a tough competition in the third and fourth curves in land and water tracks alike”. “I would like to thank Red Bull for this unique race as its distinctive concept combines Jet Ski and Quad Bike disciplines together. This highlights the role played by Red Bull, Basel Salem Al-Sabah Motorsport Club and all the sponsors who organized the event. Also, for spreading the motocross sport culture in Kuwait amongst the youth, and urging them to stay away from unsafe races and thus participate in this thrilling and professionally organized race,” Bushaiba added. In turn, Mohammad Al Baz who won the first place for the Jet Ski discipline extended his thanks to everyone who contributed in organizing and executing the event. “We had to focus in the fourth round and we advanced with a wide margin of time, which allowed us to win the first place in a raging competition amongst the participating racers who are highly competent and had previously acquired titles at their clubs, they also have won the championships they have participated in thus far,” Al Baz added. Turning to champion Mohammad Burbayea, member of the supervising committee, he said: “We would like to congratulate www.cpmagazine.net

It is also worth mentioning that we are the only company in Kuwait to print customized foil balloons with anything from photos to logos. Due to the high request and orders for our personalized section please make sure to place orders at least three days in advance.
We noticed you have an impressive baking section, much larger than what is normally found in a party store in Kuwait. Of course, you can’t have a party without treats, and who better to make them than the host? We have high end cake, pie and cupcake molds, colourful measuring cups and spoons and unique disposable towers to display your treats, just to name a few! We are also looking forward to our new baking range by Chef Paul Hollywood, who you might have seen on the Great British Bake Off. Our goal is to provide everything the customer may need so they can focus on creating their delicious treats.
How do you decide what to bring to Party Box? Our team travels around the world monthly to procure unique and trendy items from the US, the UK, Hong Kong and Europe. We look for high quality products that we have not seen in the Kuwaiti market and that we would want to use in our own homes. Some of the new items we are excited about are our new 3-D greeting cards, the baking range by Chef Paul Hollywood that we mentioned, our Hungary Caterpillar and Alice in Wonderland tea time themes and our Frozen birthday lines. We also have an incredible variety of costume accessories to liven any theme throughout the year. We make sure to get them in the best quality available so you can even reuse the items. Every item in our store has been purchased with the love and dedication you would put into your next event.
Other than great customer service, what can your customers expect from your staff? Our staff has over 20 years collective experience in party planning. They can help you put together a theme, decorate your home and give suggestions of unique and original ideas to make your party a blast. You can ask them for help finding a specific item, or brainstorm an idea for a party. Our staff is always available in person, or even by phone to help make the event as successful and stress free as possible.

In 2015 the German watch manufactory Glashütte Original presented the Senator Cosmopolite, an exceptional mechanical timepiece designed specifically to meet the needs of today's world travellers. Its innovative time zone mechanism allows the traveller to display two different time zones at once, choosing any of the 37 time zones currently in use. The mechanism even makes it possible to respond both to the creation of new time zones and to the elimination of existing ones, which happened only recently. In theory up to 96 different times can be set in this way. Despite the complexity of the specially developed automatic 89-02 movement, once again the manufactory put a great deal of effort into making the handling of the timepiece as simple and intuitive as possible. The first of these extraordinary watches reached the market in the fall of 2015.

Please introduce yourselves to our readers:
Giovanina Atieh: I am the founder and CEO of Maison Pyramide. Maria Munoz: I am the co-founder of Maison Pyramide and handle the operations side of the business.
Tell us about your education and your fashion background:
Nina: A Master’s graduate in Advertising and Fashion Communication in Milan, I accumulated over 10 years of experience in the international fashion industry before setting up house in Cairo in 2014. I have worked as part of Vivienne Westwood’s PR and styling team and then as a luxury fashion buyer for leading retail groups such as the Kuwait-based Al Ostoura. My portfolio of brands includes Chloe, Lanvin, Moschino, Alaia and Alexander McQueen. I have been lucky enough to travel the world and live in many different places and to mix with different cultures and gather a wide network of friends and connections. Maria: I graduated from the University of Madrid with a Bachelor of Arts in Oriental Studies and later pursued a Master’s in Middle Eastern Studies at the American University in Cairo. I cofounded two NGOs fighting for gender equality in Egypt before treading into the waters of fashion. I then co-founded Slickr, the first social shopping platform for fashion in the region.
How did the two of you meet?
Nina: Having been in the fashion scene for over 10 years, I recently moved to Cairo and it was quite discouraging at first seeing how such a historical city had somehow lost the sense of aesthetics and quality. I also couldn’t get over the fact that it had no real fashion scene, or at least not a mature or innovative 026
DECEMBER 2016
Fashion shouldn’t be taken seriously! Fashion should be about your personality so take it lightly and have fun; dress for yourself and believe in being different.
one. Then I met Maria who was already struggling with establishing an innovative social fashion network in Egypt and trying to help establish fashion tech awareness in the market. Through her I got to meet some talented fashion designers that gave me hope. But I couldn’t help but notice that they had no real understanding of how to turn a talent into a successful business as all of these talents were not really exposed to any other market or audience than the Egyptian one. They were therefore limited to the Egyptian market which is perceived as disorganized. I decided to turn this challenge into an opportunity to elevate the quality and aesthetic standards of fashion in the country and to help raise awareness of Egyptian talent outside the borders. I also understood Egypt as a potential fashion market that is growing quite fast so it is best to be from the first already established entities in the country. Maria: For years there was not such a thing as a proper fashion industry in Egypt. It was missing many elements necessary for the industry to work smoothly and grow. By the time I met Nina, I was the founder of the first fashion social network with e-commerce in the country; quite a revolutionary concept for the market. I saw and faced all the possible challenges and I understood that in order to introduce such a concept in the country it would need education, awareness raising and a global vision. Nina appeared as the right person to start this venture with. With her years of experience as a luxury fashion buyer, having travelled the world as part of a selected group of fashion gurus I found it to be the perfect balance to my PR and marketing expertise and an already extensive knowledge of the market.
When and how did the idea of Maison Pyramide originate and how did you move from the idea to actually taking your first business steps?
Maria: Although the idea and work on the name, branding and establishment of the company started a year ago, Maison Pyramide operations only started 7 months ago. We are very proud of all that we have accomplished in such a short time and challenging environment. Nina: We started as just the two of us working from my house, today we are a team of 13 looking for an office space to move out! Quite crazy!
What is a Maison Pyramide and what does it offer? What makes it different?
Nina: Maison Pyramide is a Cairo-based house of fashion strategists, specialized in consulting and creative collaborations. Currently we are working on putting more Egyptian fashion brands on the global fashion map. We’re aiming at creating a fashion movement that would push people out of their comfort zones and help bring talents from the Egyptian fashion scene to light. This is how the company started in Egypt because there was a big gap requiring expertise in fashion brand structure and image in general so we took action because we believed in the talent of the young Egyptian designers and believed that our backgrounds and experience in the field was missing. However, working with young Egyptian fashion talents is just the very first step and only one branch of what Maison Pyramide is. We also work with retailers and international brands that want to enter the market but lack the knowhow; we act as their marketing and PR arm in the country. Basically, Maison Pyramide is a platform for brands who want to grow and a bridge for those who want to enter new markets. Maria: MP is a boutique fashion agency based in Cairo, but because we have a more global vision, tomorrow MP can become a showcasing platform between emerging talents in the region and international talents wanting to enter the region. With our network of contacts, internationality, background and experience and with our innovative business approach, we believe the company can branch out into many different areas. We take chances, make statements and believe in the power of collaboration.
What is the best cuisine/food according to you?
Being Lebanese and Spanish, we are both raised on tapas; food that is to be shared. So on this we would both say Lebanese and Spanish - we want to taste as many flavours and dishes as possible in one meal. This also reflects our sharing and collaborative spirit.
What is it like working as a duo?
The mathematics equation 1+1=2 does not apply to us because we believe in no boundaries and disruption. Our duo equation maximizes each other’s potential beyond our expectations and understanding. It’s a feeling of power that is limitless and quite addictive.
What is the most important thing you’ve learned since starting your career in fashion?
Nina: That there is no such thing as a career in fashion only. This field is so evolved that you get driven into arts and technology. There is no routine and no resting; you should always be top of your game and ready to jump on the new wave. Maria: Fashion is like any other job. It’s the job I chose and I love it but it’s still a job and there is no stop to learning. I know that hard work with a focus pays off. I also learnt that a lot of good can come out of the so-called shallow fashion field. We can actually make a difference; for example, now we are collaborating with Unicef on a campaign to help children in need. Also some of our designers such as Okhtein make it a point to create capsule collections in collaborations with NGOs.
How would you describe your personal styles?
Nina: Being involved in all the details of fashion and the creativity of the designers, I realize that I tend to be more and more laid back and relaxed in my style. Being more of an entrepreneur then a fashionista, I prefer to spend more time on my clients and work then on my outfits. I have developed a minimal and laid back style whilst staying quite edgy. Maria: Easy to wear chic. On the go and comfortable but always chic and sassy.
What do you think is going to be a ‘must have’ for this coming season?
What are the 3 keys to success according to you?
Our success mostly is the success of our clients. When we see one of our clients reach its goals and potential, we know we did a great job. I also believe in the power of collaboration and team work. We are a collaborative platform and believe in nurturing talent and having our clients collaborate with each other. We have noticed this increases reach and success chances. With the era of social media and globalization and the fast speed everything is going on, we need to be everywhere all the time. Lastly, it’s important to stay updated and informed on what is happening; constantly studying and educating ourselves to stay one step ahead.

How is the fashion scene in Egypt evolving?
It is actually moving very fast - when we started it was very raw and basic. Today we can see the change, how the scene is more and more into quality and higher standards. We also observe many international brands that had shut down are re-opening in Egypt. The market, despite the financial and political instability, is without any doubt an ever-growing potential market for the fashion industry
that will tackle the particular areas that need growth in order for the client to expand its visibility and sales.
Who or what inspires you?
Nina: I’m always inspired by trips. Travelling broadens my horizons, be it meeting new people or being exposed to other cultures. It’s pure inspiration every single time. Maria: I am inspired daily by my partner Giovanina.
What makes Maison Pyramide unique?
Nina: I believe it is our approach to everything. Yes we are creatives and fashion experts, but we also are very organised and business oriented. We care about all of our clients and we are working on maintaining our focus on high fashion - we get approached all the time to work on lifestyle or FnB, even though it can be more remunerating. Also, as a team, we are quite international and exposed so I believe that also adds value. Maria: I am proud to say Maison Pyramide has taken Egypt by storm and in few months the company has grown exponentially. I believe this is mainly because we are offering something that was really lacking in the local scene: quality content and a vision of fashion as an aspiring dimension to be a part of. We understand each of our clients is different and has different needs. Therefore, we work hard to offer a perfectly tailored plan 028
DECEMBER 2016
What are some of your plans for the future?
Nina: Working on growing MP beyond the borders; become a platform for brand awareness and sales for a selection of talented regional and international brands. Maria: To expand and encourage more local designers to go global whilst continuing our efforts on collaboration to help raise awareness on social and environmental issues.
Your message for our readers and for CP magazine:
Fashion shouldn’t be taken seriously! Fashion should be about your personality so take it lightly and have fun; dress for yourself and believe in being different. Support local and environmental friendly brands - brands with a social mission. Fashion is very powerful and any message is possible to be conveyed through fashion expression.

L’Occitane En Provence Beckons the Holiday Season with the Scent of Adventure December brings with it a flurry of holidays, family time and stockings full of gifts to cherish for the next 365 days. With the New Year at the doorstep, the festive season is suffused with a sense of beginnings, freshness and adventure. Inspired by the season’s celebration of new journeys and spirited living, L’Occitane en Provence has created two new scents – one for him and one for her – that not only makes for memorable tokens but is reminiscent of unique yet evocative moments of joy.
For Her: The Floral, Fresh and Feisty Arlésienne
Arlésienne celebrates the power of women arrestingly bold yet undeniably warm; fiercely individualistic yet part of a global sisterhood; sweet with a touch of spice. Opening with a citrus burst of bergamot, the fragrance is elevated by a spicy saffron note. This sparkling freshness complemented by the bold, crisp, spirited greenness of galbanum is chased by the delicious almondy scent of hawthorn. Settling into the honeyed and spicy notes of the May Rose, a wave of violet adds an alluring opulence that is expectedly offset by a tangy, leafy freshness. The scent sinks into its base notes with hints of iris, flourishes of white musk and the woody warmth of ambrette and sandalwood. The Arlésienne EDT (75 ml) is priced at KD 23.25 and available at L’Occitane boutiques around Kuwait. For the woman who appreciates a quality beauty ritual, L’Occitane brings together the charm of three grand scents in its Arlésienne set, reminiscent of the different regions of France - the rose of Grasse, the violet of Tourrettes-Sur-Loup and the saffron of Provence. 030

For Him: L’Homme Cologne Cédrat evokes Freedom and Freshness
The L’Homme Cologne Cédrat man loves the unknown, hence this fragrance tempers the intensity of citrus and marine notes with cedar, musk and amber wood. Inspired by the sailors of Arles, who were inseparable from the salty scents of the ocean and the sylvan fragrance of the spices, fruits and woods they transported from faraway lands, the new scent suggests the thrill of travel and the freedom of the wind. L’Homme Cologne Cédrat EDT (75 ml) is priced at KD 19.5 and available at L’Occitane boutiques around Kuwait.
A complete set for the ultimate grooming ritual, L’Occitane presents a collection that evokes the freshness of the sea with lofty aqua notes - Just Add Water, a minty-fresh body and hair shower gel; After-Shaving, a fresh and invigorating gelcream; Throughout The Day, a tangy cleansing soap and For Men Only, an industrial-strength hand cream! From Russia With Love
Diana Ismail
t one time or another, most of us have been fascinated with the colorfully painted MATRYOSHKA (ma - TRYOSH - ka) the famous Russian nesting dolls.
The name spelled Matriosha, once a popular name for girls is believed that it was derived from the Latin word MATER, which means mother or more to the point, grandmother. In old Russia, the grandmother tended to a large family therefore she represents the largest doll with the future generations of dolls tucked inside her. This symbolizes the hope and value of life and family; the heart and soul of Russian people. With rosy cheeks, wide blue eyes, a traditional white fur coat and radiant look - this is Anastasia the classic matryoshka nesting doll. The doll has been designed by the women and mothers of the Russian Community in Kuwait. The lovely ladies spent days sculpting and painting this mezmerizing doll. Alongside Anastasia, the women wished to represent the beauty of their tradition by creating a one of a kind matryshka. Meet Nasser; a man of elegance and known to everyone in the Arab community for being Victorious just like his name. As a symbol of power and pride, the falcon which is Kuwait's national bird stands on his arm. The dolls were presented in the art Exhibition of Russian artists, that was in the Russian Embassy of Kuwait. Supported by the Russian Embassy, the famous dolls will be sent to an exhibition in St. Petersburg to represent the state of Kuwait and love of the Russians living here. The artists hope the honor will be a boon for the Russian Expats living in Kuwait. They hope that people will know that their love and pride for their country still lies in their hearts. 032

Avoid the Holiday weight gain With Tips from TIMA Love Life’s Jennifer Chalouhi he holiday season can be a challenging time for weight-watchers, with tempting choices lurking around the corner that ultimately add up by the New Year. Jennifer Chalouhi, brand ambassador of TIMA Love Life, Personal Trainer and Mother of 3, shares some top healthy tips to help you avoid all those endless temptations and unwanted weight gain during the holidays.
Be sure to get plenty of rest and sleep. The number one culprit during the holidays is staying up late and not getting at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep nightly. When your body is depleted and running low on energy, your muscles lack recovery and the first thing most people crave is food. Making the right choices for nutritious and healthy food is extremely difficult when we are tired and sleep is your best weapon against this.
Eat every 3 to 4 hours. If you think skipping meals and saving yourself for the one big meal at that holiday party will help, it will actually do the opposite. It may result in you overloading on unnecessary calories and might put you in a ‘food coma’ where you will feel bloated from having over eaten. It is also best to keep your insulin levels stable and eat every 3 to 4 hours with healthy breakfast options such as a fruit smoothie, oatmeal topped with fruits or scrambled eggs with toast. The best snacks inbetween your meals would also include a handful of almonds, an apple, veggie stick or a 1/2 cup of yogurt.
Never arrive to a party hungry. Come 6pm you’re probably thinking that with dinner being at 8pm you’ll be fine to wait. Think again. The last thing you want is to arrive to a holiday party super hungry. First, make sure you’ve been drinking plenty of water during the day. Have a light snack before arriving to your lunch or dinner engagement and aim to stay near the veggies rather than cave into chips or snacks with high calories.
Watch your portions If you are arriving to a buffet style lunch or dinner, aim to fill your plate once with everything you want. Eat slowly and stick to that portion rather than going for a second round. This also goes for dessert. I’m always up for moderation. If you are eyeing that one dessert you can’t wait to dig into, stick to that one dessert and enjoy it! “If you’re going to commit the crime, make sure you do the time.” I always say this to my clients and of course I mean it in a funny way, if you know your holiday plans ahead of time make sure to get that extra bit of cardio in or choose a workout that you enjoy and stick to it. Putting exercise on the back burner during the holidays is something most people actually do. When people are on holiday they usually let go, but added calories will creep in if you keep eating fatty foods and if you are inactive most of the time. Our bodies need to constantly move in order to burn any extra calories we may be consuming during the holidays. Let’s be real, the holidays are a time to celebrate and enjoy being with loved ones and what better way to celebrate than with food. But you don’t have to allow food to set you back 5 or 10 kgs, rather beat those unwanted holiday weight gains and include a daily workout plan whether its jogging, yoga, zumba, a workout from home or running around after your kids. Just make sure to stay active. Happy Holidays from TIMA Love Life! 034

BAH HUMBUG!
I
t’s that time of year again; the time of year when even the most generous and tolerant people turn into Ebenezer Scrooge having been pushed to the limit by the crowds, the cost, or simply just the excessive nature of Christmas. Scrooge, that well-known Charles Dickens character from the novel ‘A Christmas Carol’ is a cold-hearted miser who despises Christmas and although his character was first introduced in 1893, his catchphrase ‘Bah Humbug’ is still used today. In fact, it’s probably the most common terminology used to express disgust at today’s Christmas traditions. Christmas is no longer just a religious and cultural celebration commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. In the US alone, the festive season generates over $400 billion of economic activity every year – that’s an awful lot of baubles! So when did Christmas become such a commercial event? It’s always been a time for giving but I suspect tradition has now given way to pressure. My own Christmas wish-list when I was a child probably consisted of something like a Tiny Tears doll or an album by the Bay City Rollers. Thanks mainly to technology, today’s children desire the latest iphone, smart watch or videogame (perhaps all of the above), none of which can be found in the supermarket ‘bargain bucket’. We all want our children to have the latest games and gadgets and the most fashionable clothes and shoes, but putting pressure on ourselves to satisfy their demands when our budget is already stretched, is not particularly wise; especially when many of them don’t even understand the true meaning of Christmas. Regardless of your thoughts on the December festivities, you can’t deny the delights of traditional decorations. It’s always nice to see Christmas tree lights twinkling in someone’s window, or a shop display depicting a winter wonderland; but again, this once modest custom is now bordering on the ridiculous. Homes across the world are now lit up like an airport runway. Giant Santas are fastened to rooftops; blow-up reindeer are erected in gardens; and, in the absence of real snow, plastic snowmen stand guard over a fake robin redbreast. Where will it all end? Keeping up with the neighbours, it seems,

DECEMBER 2016
is getting a little out of hand. The sad thing is, rarely among all of the seasonal mistletoe, holly and poinsettia, do you see a ‘proper’ nativity scene; Mary and Joseph with the baby Jesus wrapped in swaddling clothes, the Angel, three Wise Men, shepherds and their sheep. This is, ultimately, what Christmas is all about, yet you’re more likely to find Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs than you are to find a manger and the Star of Bethlehem. And Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a mountain of food. Food waste is a bone of contention at any time of the year but it increases ten-fold during the festive period. There’s only so much food one person can eat so why buy so much excessive produce only to throw it away? Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner as much as the next person (apart from the sprouts that is!) but only in moderation. I wonder how many jars of pickled red cabbage are actually opened; or how many packets of chestnut stuffing are still sitting in the kitchen cupboard well beyond the twelfth night; not forgetting the nut crackers which have yet to see a nut! I must admit, I took on the role of Ebenezer Scrooge some years ago when I gave up the arduous annual task of buying, writing and posting Christmas cards. What a complete and utter waste of time and money that is! Living in Kuwait, a country with no official postal service, gave me the perfect excuse to forgo this particular yearly undertaking. However, even before my move to the Middle East, I chose to forfeit this costly exercise and give the money to charity instead. So, not entirely Ebenezer after all! Having said that, I suspect if I was still residing in my home country I would soon be muttering ‘Bah Humbug’ at the crowded shops, expensive decorations and constant playing of Wizzard’s 1973 hit ‘I wish it could be Christmas every day’. Perhaps we should all go back to basics when it comes to Christmas. By all means deck the halls with boughs of holly but remember why you’re doing it in the first place. In ‘A Christmas Carol’, Mr. Scrooge eventually sees the light and becomes a model of generosity and kindness. A lesson to us all I think.

Please introduce yourself to our readers:
I am a Bahraini entrepreneur who appreciates luxury. I live and breathe through my brand and what I create for today’s new generation of woman. I have a vision in mind with the strength and determination to grow as a brand and a person. I create luxury leather handmade handbags and accessories from Arabia; to stand strong against the international brands to show we too can offer such luxury from our part of the world representing our woman’s power and savior flair.
Tell us about your childhood and education:
I was born and raised in Bahrain; that’s my home. I was raised in a family of entrepreneurs, which I guess is why those traits were passed down to me. When it came time to study I wanted to experience something different and go to the places where fashion really meant something. I studied in London and Milan on womenswear fashion and the art of leather craft.
How and when did you get interested in fashion?
I have been brought up by a creative family; design and interest in fashion has always been around me since I was a child.
What kind of advice would you give to someone interested in getting into the fashion industry today? Have a vision, a goal and a unique identify. Persistence and passion will get you far.
I work closely with the client in understanding fully what she desires from the exotic skin; style, size, emblem and engraving. We offer emblems made out of solid gold and diamonds (this is done by renowned jewelers using only the finest diamonds). After the client has confirmed their order we start by working closely with the tannery to create the skin in the colour and finish she desires. This process in itself can take up to 2-3 months. Once the factory has received the skins the bag is hand cut by experts with skill in exotic leather cutting, then assigned to a master artisan to complete the bag. Simultaneously a handcrafter leather box is custom made for the clients order, sealed with her name.
I had a curiosity for the craft of handbags after a young bag obsession, like many girls at a young age. That made me explore wanting to learn and understand more in the field.
When did you finally launch your business and did you face any difficulties starting your business?
What is the price range of your handbags?
I was lucky enough to get a personal loan from a friend and I got a team of artisans together. I had my designs in mind already, so the challenging part was just making the bags exactly how I wanted them. The business was launched in 2012 so it’s still new, which is also challenging, as I want to position it in the luxury sector.
Our Classic line ranges from 1100 AED and our exotic pieces can range up to 260000 AED.
How can people get a hold of a Sofia Al Asfoor bag? We will be launching in Bloomingdales Kuwait this February and you can currently purchase them on our website www.sofiaalasfoor.com with complimentary shipping.
How did you overcome the challenges?
What is your creative process like?
Everybody wants something original. I design with the confident woman in mind. I envision a style that will be part of the Shield range. A style in mind develops over time; when I see it with clarity I fly to 040
DECEMBER 2016
A little bit of myself - I think it’s crucial to love my product - but mainly the woman I want wearing the bag; a strong and independent woman on a mission to succeed.
You also offer a customization option. How does that work?
How did your interest in handbags and accessories develop?
The most distinctive feature is the pyramids. This was a challenge in itself to perfect. The emblem is also distinctive and unique.
Who do you have in mind when you design your bags?
What materials do you use and why?
As a child my mother always insisted on classes to do with art, music and sports. I hadn’t taken any fashion classes until I went to study abroad in London and Milan. In my last year of school I focused on practical work on leather accessories, where you are taught the basics of leather craft and to stitch your own pieces.
What are some of the distinctive features and elements of your bags?
Where do you drive inspiration from?
I have a very artistic eye, so when I’m walking the streets while travelling I tend to get inspired by all things beautiful. It could be the reflection in a puddle or someone’s outfit. All these beautiful things inspire me. The strong women who I surround myself with also heavily inspire me.
I use the world’s finest leathers. I use calf skin and crocodile.
Did you go for any formal training or education in fashion?
Believing in the designs, my team and myself was how I got through the process. I truly believe that if you want something you can get it, so I never gave up on my vision. Overcoming challenges is the most rewarding part of the whole process I think.
the factory in Spain to work closely with the master patrons. We develop and create the blue prints of the bag and that turns into the first sample. Whilst the creation is being put together, suggestions and modifications are made until the design is finalized. For all our pieces we continuously develop and finesse each piece even after they have gone into production. Continuous R&D (research and development) is done over the years striving for perfection.
What are your future plans for the brand?
Your message for us at CP magazine: I would like to thank CP for taking the time to share my story with their readers.
We plan on expanding the awareness of the brand into more markets to make it a household name. I am always thinking of ways to perfect the bag and have it evolve with time while keeping its classic design. I want the brand to be one that everyone knows.
What would be your ultimate goal for the brand?
For the pieces to be real staple items and for my brand to be a household name.
Your message for our readers:
Fulfillment only comes through achieving what you love.

What’s Trending down the Supermarket Aisles?
A Dietitian’s Guide to Making Healthy and Smart Market Choices Zainab Almousa, MS, RD
long day at work and, on good days, a workout squeezed into my tight schedule, I treat myself to the supermarket. Yes you heard that right, the supermarket. Somehow over the years I have started to enjoy grocery shopping almost as much as I enjoy shoe shopping; maybe being a dietitian is partly to blame. What’s even better is that the former leaves a much gentler effect on my bank statement and can be done on a daily basis. What is interesting about grocery shopping is that our choices seem to evolve as we age mostly in a better direction – somewhat like our wardrobes. Also, shopping for yourself in college when you are on a tight budget and want something that is filling varies greatly compared to when you are shopping for a family and start thinking of your child’s nourishment. 042
DECEMBER 2016
Nutrition professionals usually tell you to go to the supermarket after having a meal to avoid making unhealthy purchases. I, however, usually go right before dinner because I feel that going on an empty stomach inspires a bit of creativity in the dishes I make the following week. I roam around the fruit and vegetable section savouring the different seasonal selections and coming up with various ways to cook them. What is interesting though is that going to the supermarket on a full stomach is a piece of advice that does not come unwarranted. Apparently supermarkets are designed, and products are displayed, in a way to attract consumers to buy things they might not have intended to purchase and more often than not, those products tend to be not so healthy. Sticking to a list of purchases becomes even harder when your trip to the market happens to be with your toddler. I had the pleasure of witnessing the power of manufacturer advertising on kids first hand when my 22 month old daughter started shouting, ‘Minnie Mouse, Minnie Mouse’ in the dairy section. I turned around to see what she was pointing at and realized it was a fruit flavoured yogurt that had as much sugar as a candy bar. The yogurt was in a pretty pink package with a large picture of Minnie Mouse
on it, far more attractive to a child than the plain yogurt I was putting in our cart. What’s interesting is that the fruit yogurt was strategically placed at the top shelf in the refrigerator to catch a child’s eye right from where they’re sitting in the shopping cart seat. I quickly distracted her with a bright pink glass cleaner that I had in the cart and pushed our cart away. Unfortunately the products that manufacturers promote to kids with colourful packaging and famous characters are those that are pretty high in sugar and low in nutritional value; the most common of these products are breakfast cereals. Interestingly, kids are not the only victims of advertising strategies used by manufacturers; we are too. Words like ‘Low Fat’ and ‘Made with Wholegrains’ often attract consumers trying to make healthier choices. The unfortunate reality is that many of these products are not healthy and quite lacking in nutritional value. Manufacturers pay what is called a ‘slotting fee’ to supermarkets to have their product placed on a certain shelf to conveniently catch a customer’s eye. Armed with that knowledge, how do you as a health conscious consumer protect yourself and your children from the pitfalls of making unhealthy choices? Basically, make the majority of your purchases unpacked and unprocessed. Spend as much time as you can with your kids in the produce section. Make your kids look, smell and touch all the fruits and vegetables. One of my daughter’s favourite games is reciting which animals eat the different fruits and vegetables. When it comes to packaged goods the first thing I do is to ignore all the claims stated at the front of the package and go straight to the ingredient list. Ingredients are listed in order of weight with the main ingredient first. So if you see the word sugar as the first or second item on the list, then you know that sugar is a main ingredient in the product you have selected. Opt for one with less sugar or no sugar at all. Another trick used by manufacturers is to use different names for sugar such as high-fructose corn syrup, barley malt syrup, or dehydrated cane juice. Unfortunately in modern day products, you find sugar in almost everything such as bread, pasta sauce, fruit flavoured yogurts, savoury biscuits, and so on. You would be surprised how hard it is to find bread that has no added sugar. If I’m buying bread I usually buy it from the bakery at the supermarket because it has fewer preservatives. I keep it in the freezer at home and warm it up every time I care to have a slice. As for dairy products, I usually choose plain yogurt and milk and top them with fresh fruits at home or mix them with frozen fruits with no added sugar for a delicious smoothie. Also steer away from processed meats, which studies have shown significantly increase a person’s cancer risk. As for the candy and chocolate aisle, I just skip it altogether and treat my daughter with some dates or raisins. At the end of the day make the supermarket a fun place for you and your kids; a place that is free of tantrums and cries of discontent. The trick is to know which aisles to roam. Happy shopping!
Here’s a list summarizing my supermarket tricks: 1. Spend the majority of your time at the produce section and make most of your purchases fresh and unpackaged. 2. Let your kids pick out their favourite fruits and vegetables and think of recipes that you can cook together. 3. Always read the ingredient list even if a product claims to be healthy. Stay away from products where sugar and salt are first on the list. 4. Buy fresh bread from the bakery to limit the amount of preservatives you consume. 5. If buying packed bread read the ingredient list and make sure the first word on the list is ‘Wholegrain or ‘Wholewheat’ because even if a product claims to ‘contain wholegrains’ the first ingredient on the list may be refined flour. 6. Purchase plain dairy products with no added flavours. Opt for full fat products for kids up to the age of two and low fat or fat free for adults and older kids. 7. Stay away from fruit juices for kids and give them plain milk or water as an alternative. Mix milk with frozen berries or bananas to make a healthy smoothie. 8. A healthy alternative to fresh fruits are frozen fruits and vegetables. Just make sure to read the label to avoid added salt or sugar. 9. Try to skip the candy and chocolate aisle altogether and distract your child with dried fruits and nuts as an alternative. 10. As an alternative to chips and crisps buy popcorn kernels and prepare them at home with your kids. It’s a healthier alternative to the microwavable brands which have lots of preservatives. 11. Stay away from processed meats and opt for fresh fish, poultry, meat, beans and legumes.

It will keep you on trend, without the boldness of a traditional cat-eye. lThe essential round shape has made a comeback and we see this trend continuing for years to come. lThe versatility of the unisex round shape makes it a fundamental frame choice for both men and women. lAviator shaped lenses are also utilizing the classic round design by what is termed the ‘round lens aviator’. lSquare shaped glasses are timeless for men. Accents that update this style and make it different to previous seasons include the ‘keyhole’ nose bridge and the use of dual colours.
Frame Details
brow line seems to be the focal point of most frames in 2017. bridges of classic silvers and golds are joined with plastic frames to make a scholar-like frame. lLikewise, metal frames are reinforced with plastic brow lines which creates a very dominant look. lThe use of the ‘double nose bridge’ which was once very masculine is now present in women's eyewear too. Colours l The marbled look is also gaining momentum. lNatural hues is where the eyewear market is moving this season. lColours are now more subtle and soft compared to the previous years lCreate your luxe look with a mix of light and dark shades with a subtle shine. of dark and bold shades. like dusty pink, baby blue or soft creams evoke a feminine and calming tone. lLight brown, olive green and honey amber shades are popular among men who want to mimic the natural colour trend. lOpaque to clear frames are very much in style too.

JUNKYARD STREET CLASSICS “Keeping it simple” Al-Hamra Tower has been a popular social venue since first opening its doors in 2011. Whether it’s luxury brand shopping, the latest movie releases or a spot of weekend jazz, the mall rarely disappoints. But there’s another great reason to visit Al-Hamra – Junkyard! 046
DECEMBER 2016
Junkyard Street Classics can also be found in two other locations in Kuwait – The Village and Ardiya – but it’s their Al-Hamra restaurant that really got us talking. With a mighty menu selection it was difficult to know where to start but we made ourselves comfortable and settled down to eat. To whet our appetites, we started with the Butterfly Shrimp. These freshly breaded shrimps were both crispy and juicy and worked perfectly with the accompanying honey mustard dip. The Street Wings, also breaded, were equally enjoyable and a winner with the buffalo sauce and blue cheese dip. Next, we tried the Chicken Tenders (tender indeed!) together with the Chili Cheese Fries – a feast in itself with homemade chili beef, mixed cheese, jalapenos, onions and mustard – a fiery favourite!
www.cpmagazine.net

To our surprise, there’s an impressive selection of salads at Junkyard. Choose from Pumpkin, Caesar, Beetroot, Portobello Mushroom or Mozzarella & Tomato. We opted to try the Beetroot and Caesar varieties, both of which were fresh, crunchy and more than generous. But no trip to Junkyard would be complete without a burger! As expected, the Street Classic didn’t disappoint – juicy beef, cheddar cheese, lettuce, onions and pickles with just the right amount of ketchup and mustard – delicious! The Junky was equally tasty thanks to a generous topping of signature yard sauce; and the B-C-B (Bacon Cheese Burger) hit the spot with its cheddar cheese and beef bacon combo. For those who prefer chicken, you can’t go wrong with the Yard Chicken Burger - juicy chicken coated with just the right amount of seasoned breadcrumbs – guaranteed to impress! There’s also a Buffalo Chicken option – the same juicy chicken breast but smothered in their delicious signature buffalo sauce. We also tried the Grilled Chicken Sandwich (marinated chicken strips, cheddar cheese, lettuce and tomatoes, lightly dressed with mayo), a tasty alternative to a burger and one of five fresh sandwich options available at Junkyard. Choose from Halloum, Tuna Mayo, Turkey, Mozzarella & Tomato and Grilled Chicken. The Junkyard menu also features three mouthwatering Quesadillas (Vegetable, Chicken or Mushroom), two finger-licking Hot Dogs (Street Dog or Yard Chili Cheese) and a trio of Grills (Chicken Fajita, Beef Fajita or Shrimp Fajita). We sampled the shrimp – great choice! The signature flour tortillas were soft and light; the shrimps plump and juicy; the onions and capsicums hot and crunchy; and the cheese, sour cream, guacamole and marinara sauce, the perfect tasty topping. Surprisingly, we still had room for dessert (although only just!) and were tempted by their Signature Chocolate Triangles – deep fried golden puff pastry triangles topped with Nutella and honey – deliciously decadent! Other dessert options include Chocolate Chip Brownie and their popular Chubby Balls.

With a wide selection of beverages to accompany your meal, you’ll find everything you need at Junkyard. By ‘keeping it simple’, they have created an enjoyable dining experience promising the street-food you crave without skimping on quality. And the great thing about their Al-Hamra location is you can enjoy it all from the perfect people-watching platform! Alternatively, you could take advantage of their home delivery option. Junkyard is just one of the quality eateries established by the Kuwait London Company. As with all of their restaurants, Junkyard has been developed locally and is operated by an experienced in-house team of culinary, managerial and technical experts. The result is plain to see and the added bonus with the Al-Hamra site is that they now serve breakfast from 8am to 12 noon every day. There is currently no home delivery option for breakfast at Al-Hamra but this can only be a good thing – it gives you the perfect excuse to eat out!
Follow Junkyard on Instagram @junkyardkw or visit one of their urban themed locations at Al-Hamra (22270292), The Village (23901022) or Ardhiya (22399133).

YUMMY FOR THEIR LITTLE TUMMY:
Breakfast Time! Sherifa Alasousi
S
kipping breakfast can set you up for over-eating later in the day. A healthy morning meal, on the other hand, can give you energy, satisfy your appetite and set the stage for smart decisions all day long.
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day for all ages so start your day with a nutritious and beneficial meal to have a successful day. Babies and kids need to have a well built breakfast to help them build their little mussels, brains and energy. Here's a look at some of my favourite breakfast foods, along with expert tips for making them even healthier. Oatmeal
Steel-cut oats, which take about 15 minutes to cook, contain more fiber than rolled oats or instant varieties, but any type of oatmeal is a healthy choice; just avoid the flavoured kinds which can be packed with sugar. Instead, sweeten your bowl with milk and a bit of honey and top with fruit and nuts. Greek Yogurt
Greek yogurt is loaded with calcium and boasts plenty of protein (nearly twice as much as regular yogurt) to keep you feeling full throughout the morning. Your best bet is to choose a plain, non-fat variety and add some fruit to give it some sweetness and flavour.
My recipe this month contains eggs and makes a wonderful breakfast meal for all ages.
Eggs
Once shunned for being high in dietary cholesterol (one yolk contains about 60% of your daily allotment), eggs are now embraced as a healthy source of protein and nutrients like vitamin D. Why the turnaround? Research has shown that the cholesterol in our food has less of an impact on blood cholesterol than previously thought. Watermelon
Watermelon is an excellent way to hydrate in the morning. What's less well known is this juicy fruit is among the best sources of lycopene (a nutrient found in red fruits and vegetables) which is important for vision, heart health and cancer prevention. Blueberries
Fresh or frozen, these tiny super fruits pack a big antioxidant punch. Or better yet, a flurry of punches! Studies suggest that eating blueberries regularly can help improve everything from memory and motor skills to blood pressure and metabolism. Kiwi
This fruit has about 65 milligrams of vitamin C per serving, nearly as much as an orange. It's also rich in potassium and copper and contains more fiber per ounce than a banana, making it a good aid to digestion. Orange juice
Fresh squeezed OJ is a classic (and tasty) morning beverage, but that doesn't mean it can't be improved on. For even more nutritional benefit, opt for a store-bought variety that's fortified with vitamin D. Along with fatty fish and fortified milk, fortified OJ is one of the few dietary sources of the sunshine vitamin, higher levels of which have been linked to a lower risk of osteoporosis, depression and certain cancers.
You will need: l12 eggs l5 cherry tomatoes l1/2 cup chopped onion l1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper, or to taste l1/2 teaspoon salt l1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper l1/4 teaspoon garlic powder l1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese l1 cup thinly-sliced fresh spinach leaves
Steps: 1- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease 12 muffin cups, or line with paper muffin liners. 2- Beat eggs in a large bowl. Stir in onion, green pepper, salt, pepper and garlic powder. Mix in the tomatoes, spinach leaves and Cheddar cheese. Spoon into muffin cups. 3- Bake in preheated oven until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean, 20 to 25 minutes.
You can add mozzarella cheese on top after it’s done and leave it in the oven for a couple of seconds until it melts. You can also add some fresh herbs just to give it a little kick of freshness - I love adding some basil on top. Serve them with a warm Caesar salad. Bon appetite!

Keys2Balance
A L - M U F T A H “Balance is key, but what are the keys to balance?”
Reem Al-Muftah’s love of all things ‘health and fitness’ has lead to her sacrificing her own competitive instincts to concentrate on improving the lifestyle balance of others. But what inspired Reem to become a ‘positive influencer’ and what’s the surprising guilty pleasure she just cannot resist?
Hi Reem. In a few sentences, please tell our readers a little about yourself.
Well, I am 28 years old and come from Qatar. I was brought up in an environment surrounded by health, fitness and the love for sports. As a child, I engaged in all physical activities that were provided to me in school and simply fell in love with sports. As I grew, the love then expanded to include all health and fitness related matters.
Tell us about your education and what you currently do?
I completed most of my schooling in the American School of Doha in Qatar and continued to study Business Administration at Carnegie Mellon University, Qatar. I then began working in Human Resources in our Oil and Gas Sector. I opted for HR as I knew I wanted to work with people and what better way than in my country’s most critical industry, petrol.
How and when did your interest in sports develop?
My interest in sports developed when I was around 7 years old. The school I attended always encouraged students to engage in physical education classes and made various extracurricular activities available to us to try. I then discovered my love for 054
DECEMBER 2016
general fitness and football. As expected, I started trying out different sports and ended up loving and playing primarily football and basketball and developing a passion for weight training and conditioning.
Did your family support you in your interest for sports?
As a young man, my father played for Al-Wakrah Sports Club here in his hometown Al-Wakrah. Consequently, my father always supported me and my siblings’ interest for sports. My family as a whole was very supportive of my personal interest in sports as they quickly realized my great respect for the world of health and fitness.
What is your favourite sport?
Football. There is no better sport to play or watch.
What lead you to start Keys2Balance and what exactly is your philosophy about healthy life and fitness? Friends and family would always ask how I constantly maintained my healthy lifestyle. One day, I just randomly thought of using one of the current social media platforms to
www.cpmagazine.net
055
spread my attitude towards it all. My friends and family all encouraged me, although I had my reservations. I wanted to offer something new, something a bit different, so decided the account should actually answer the question I was always asked, how do I maintain the lifestyle? I automatically answered myself, ‘balance’. The aim of the account is to show the public that living a balanced and healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to be strict, tiring and boring. My philosophy? Balance is key, but what are the keys to balance? I believe that life is too short to live it feeling like you’re suffering to be healthy and fit. I always hear people complain and give up and I want to prevent the distortion and wrong image people have been lead to believe. I am not a certified trainer nor am I a nutritionist, but I believe that every individual can find his or her own keys to balancing a healthy lifestyle.
How can someone get motivated to start a healthy/ active lifestyle?
This might sound cliché, but the motivation has to come from within. If that person does not want to change the way they live their life, then it will not happen. Starting and even sustaining a healthy lifestyle is done through active thinking. In my opinion, we have to continuously be aware of our actions and behaviour. The weaknesses in our lifestyles are usually patterned and we need to be able to identify and change them.
What do you find are people’s top fitness concerns and what advice do you give?
The two most common fitness concerns I hear about are food and time. I agree that eating the wrong foods is the hardest to reduce, but I always recommend active thinking. When we are hungry, we forget that no matter what we eat, we will eventually get full. People decide to go for the better tasting items that are probably the unhealthier options. By balancing their diet to include the majority of the daily requirements and by actively choosing healthier options, clean eating can be achieved. I do not support strict diets unless it’s a health requirement, but I do support a balanced non-strict diet. When it comes to time, everyone is quick to complain that they do not have time to incorporate physical activities into their busy schedules. I am a firm believer that there is always time. For example, it could be as simple as always using the stairs at work, including your children in outdoor activities or just taking 20 minutes to do straightforward exercises while you watch your favourite TV show.
Have you ever considered competing in sports or being part of the official team in any sports? I would love to officially compete in sports but I choose to focus on other matters and balance my lifestyle to enjoy the benefits of my many favourite activities.
Being an inspiration to others, what inspires you the most? I deeply hope that I do inspire others as it’s this that inspires me to continue Keys2Balance. I can’t be the judge but I am sure of one thing, my ambition to show people they can apply simple adjustments to help achieve a healthy and active lifestyle. My love for health and fitness inspires my posts and I will not stop trying to ignite that love in others.
How can we combine a healthy way of living with a busy life? Any tips?
Here are my five general guidelines to balancing a healthy way of living:
056
DECEMBER 2016
lTry to eat as clean as possible, but don’t deny yourself so much lAs much as possible, try to regularly eat your meals at the same times each day lDrink lots of water lMove - if you have the option to move, move lSet realistic goals and manage your expectations lWhatever you do, do not let yourself end up hating the new changes, you have to always remind yourself why you are doing this
What according to you are the 3 most important keys to success in life? 1. Do what you want, do it for you, because only you can do you it 2. Be positive and think better late than never 3. Take advantage of the services around you to educate yourself
What’s your workout routine like every week? I like to maintain four weight training sessions combined with a small amount of cardio and one to two full cardio sessions during a week. Wherever I can, I will opt for a class such as Zumba or an outdoors event activity such as jet-skiing.
What are your future plans for Keys2Balance? I hope for it to be more successful and to be able to take advantage of social media to get my message across.
What are you most proud of? And going forward, what’s your biggest dream? I am most proud of my circle of support that stimulates me to fall more in love with my curiosity for health and fitness. As of now, my only dream is for my message to get across to the community by becoming a public influencer.
When it comes to nutrition, what is your advice? My most common piece of advice on nutrition is to actively involve your mind in diet options and not to take what you hear at face value. There are numerous studies and theories and we have to constantly educate ourselves by questioning, reading and researching to see which actually apply to our individual biologies.
What are some of your other hobbies? I love the beach and desert; anything that has to do with the outdoors and has the option of being active.
What’s your guilty pleasure? Donuts! I love jam and glazed donuts and will never say no!
Your message for our readers: There are many ways to achieve a balanced healthy lifestyle, find YOUR balance.
Your message for us at CP magazine: I thank the CP team for taking interest in my philosophy and message. Without support and motivation from organizations like these, positive influencers would have no voice.

Looking Back on 2016 Still mourning the loss of their Starman idol, the music world was rocked once again by the death of Prince on 21st April. This extraordinary performer, although often controversial, was unarguably a revolution and will be sorely missed by fans across the globe.
Gill Sherry
ost years have their share of ups and downs. Inevitably, as time goes by we lose those we love or those we admire. But 2016 saw the loss of a number of highly respected, much loved icons resulting in a year of melancholic regret. The death of David Bowie on 10th January shocked the world and began what was to be a year of unexpected, celebrity deaths. Almost a year on, people are still mourning the loss of this musical legend and paying tribute to the man who touched so many through his music.
2016 also saw the loss of architectural genius Dame Zaha Hadid. This exceptionally talented lady lost her life on 31st March, leaving behind a lasting legacy of award winning and eye-catching designs. Among her most famous projects were the Sheikh Zayed Bridge in Abu Dhabi, the Phaeno Science Centre in Wolfsburg, Germany and the Aquatics Centre for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. There’s no doubt her passing was a major blow in the world of architecture and design and that her unique and expressive creations will be widely missed. On 3rd June, news came of yet another shocking loss. Muhammad Ali, considered by many as the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time, died from septic shock in Phoenix, Arizona. Despite being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Syndrome in 1984, the boxing legend was still very much in the public eye and began to take on fights of a very different nature. He travelled to Israel in 1985 to request the release of Muslim prisoners; he visited Sudan in 1988 to raise awareness of the plight of famine victims; and he met with Saddam Hussein in 1990 in an attempt to negotiate the release of American hostages. Later, in 2012, Ali was a flag bearer of the Olympic Flag at the Summer Olympics in London. His obvious health decline was a shock to many but did nothing to lessen the blow of his death four years later. Thankfully, the 2016 Olympics gave us something to smile about. The Games of the XXXI Olympiad (better known as Rio 2016) saw Kuwait win its first ever Gold medal. Admittedly, Fehaid Al-Deehani’s win in
058

the men’s double trap was recorded as ‘independent’ but nothing detracts from his impressive victory and subsequent hero’s welcome back on his home soil. Unfortunately, not everything in the Middle East is golden. Since the Battle of Aleppo began in 2012 the Syrian city has suffered massive destruction. The plight of the city and its occupants has been at the forefront of the Syrian civil war in 2016 with repeated air strikes and horrendous consequences. With no end to the troubles in sight we can only pray for those affected by the unrest and hope for peace in the region. Those forced to flee Syria (and other troubled countries) have been faced with impossible, life threatening decisions. Do they stay in their war-torn homeland or travel great lengths to seek shelter and safety elsewhere. Many chose to sail to Europe, with fatal consequences. Closer to home, the lack of casualties resulting from the crash landing of flight EK521 in Dubai in August was nothing short of a miracle. The Emirates Airline crew should be applauded for their efficiency in handling the life-threatening emergency which could quite easily have been so much worse. Of course, much of 2016 was dominated by Donald Trump. Love him or loathe him you certainly couldn’t avoid him. After 17 months of the most controversial campaigning in US history, Mr. Trump finally beat Hillary Clinton to the White House and, in doing so, created a widespread feeling of unease across the globe. Only time will tell whether the US public made the right decision but one thing is for sure, we’ll be seeing a lot more of that infamous hairstyle in 2017. Sticking with politics, no-one was more surprised than me by the ‘Brexit’ vote in the UK in June this year. With the British public voting to exit the EU, Prime Minister David Cameron resigned from his position and saw the pound fall to its lowest level since 1985. Theresa May has since taken over at No. 10 but the uncertainty surrounding Britain’s future, and indeed its stability, is still cause for great concern. On a positive note, Mrs. May met with His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah at the GCC Summit in Bahrain earlier this month, strengthening the longstanding and continued relationship between the two countries. No doubt she also congratulated the Amir following the 10th anniversary of his ascension to the throne earlier this year - another highlight of 2016 along with the 55th anniversary of Kuwait’s independence and the 25th anniversary of her liberation. So, despite the unavoidable sadness that life throws at us, there’s still plenty to smile about when we look back at 2016. Let’s hope 2017 has a few less tears and a lot more cheers! Happy New Year.

Known by many in the region as the ‘Las Vegas of the Middle East’, Dubai is full of the same glitz and glamour as the popular American destination, just minus the gambling! 1. the MUST see…Liberty Bell. The world’s current tallest building; the Burj Khalifa. Standing at an astounding 160 stories tall, people on the top floors literally have the clouds at their feet. There are two different observation decks at floors 125 and 148. It’s highly recommended to book tickets online as queues do get rather long rather quickly! Don’t worry about buying a day or two in advance either as bad weather is rare most of the year. http://burjkhalifa.ae/en 2. the MUST eat… - There are so many restaurants in this huge city that picking just one is almost an impossible task. However, if you truly want to taste the flavours of the region you must try Al Mallah. They have multiple branches around the city and their huge neon green lights are hard to miss. Definitely try their shawarma. http://www.timeoutdubai.com/restaurants/ details/505-al-mallah
4. the MUST stay…The One & Only Royal Mirage is one of the absolute best places to stay and pamper yourself. They have an excellent spa and private beach; plus you are a short drive from Dubai Marina which has a lively night life scene along the new hotspot to ‘be seen’ at JBR Walk. If you’d rather avoid the crowds just stay back and sit in their traditional style courtyard with cushion seating and perhaps try some ‘hubbly bubbly’ known as shisha. https://www.oneandonlyresorts.com/one-and-onlyroyal-mirage-dubai 5. the MUST do off the beaten path…three words: Overnight Desert Safari. After a couple days in this grand city, why not break away from the hustle and bustle of the city lights and camp overnight under the stars as you dine on Arabic cuisine, watch a belly dancer, and sip on hot tea. Truly an experience to remember! http://www.desertsafaridubai.com
3. the MUST shop…For a special souvenir, clothing, perfumes or something shiny, grab a taxi and head down to the Gold Souk in Deira neighborhood. It has just about everything - but sharpen up your haggling skills as the first price you hear is not the final price you should pay. http://www.goldsouks.com/dubai/index.php

TheStylistes
Carla Otero
&
Marie Auffret
“The Stylistes The European image consultants captivated by the Middle East and inspired by the Big Apple.
Hi, please introduce yourselves to our readers: My name is Carla Otero, 35 years old from Spain. Before moving to Dubai, I lived in London, where I went to university and started my career in business. I am very passionate about fashion, travelling and gastronomy. I am Marie Auffret, 25 years old from France. I moved to Qatar right after my studies of Textile Design and Art and after 3 years, decided to relocate to Dubai. I am fortunate enough to tailor my degree around my passion as it can be quite difficult in this climate. My inspiration derives from the simplest of things; be it street art or runways.
So, what do you both do? We are a team of wardrobe stylists and image consultants based in Dubai. We style TV commercials, TV shows, editorials, celebrities and individual clients. Additionally, we collaborate with brands as image strategists.
Tell us about your education and any professional training? Carla: I am a certified Image Consultant by the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York. Prior to that, I graduated in Business Administration from London Westminster University. 064
DECEMBER 2016
Marie: I graduated from ESAAT - The College of Art, Design and Textiles, France, with a degree in Textile Design and Art. In addition to this I have received professional training in restoring authentic costumes for movies and theatres, at LeVestiaire in Paris.
If you could explain your work to the world, how would you describe it?
Our work is divided into two parts, our personal clients and our commercial projects. As image consultants for personal clients, we analyze our clients colour, body shape and lifestyles. Following this thorough analysis, we shop with them to create a wardrobe they adore and feel comfortable in. Our aim is to empower individuals by making an impact on their physical appearance and the way they feel about themselves. On the other hand, our commercial work includes designing and creating the wardrobe for TV commercials and films, styling editorials and collaborating with brands and designers.
How did you get started in fashion styling?
Carla: My passion and interest has always been in image consulting and fashion. I started working as wardrobe stylist for

TV commercials and fell in love with the creative process of delivering a message through the wardrobe of the characters involved. Every project was different and I loved the challenges and fast pace of film life. Then I moved into other areas of fashion and image, but my beginnings were in television. Marie: I have always had an interest in fashion for as long as I can remember. I feel the way we dress is a great way to express ourselves and can speak volumes. I began my career as an Assistant Costume Designer for the 2012 Arab Games in Qatar. This wonderful project gave me the chance to develop my knowledge and learn new techniques. Following my interest in fashion I embarked on what would be a lifechanging experience working for Pronovias. Over the next three years inside the fashion department, I developed my skills as a manager and worked directly with leading designers from Barcelona. I was responsible for selecting new styles for the upcoming season and shipped collections to multiple boutiques. Later, I successfully transitioned to the world of Freelance Styling in Dubai to work on a big TV commercial in partnership with Carla.
How did you both meet and how did you decide to collaborate and work together?
Photographer: Diana Nasif @diananasif, Outfits: The Kooples, Hair & Makeup: Maison de Joelle
We met on the filming of a Johnson & Johnson TV commercial. We got along so well that we haven’t stopped working together ever since. We have worked on countless projects as a team. We both have similar interests and work ethics but each of us has a unique talent. Marie has a special eye for fabrics, textures and understands compositions well. On the other hand, Carla has an eye for colour, proportions and business. As a team, we just love what we do and we hope our clients and people that follow us can see that too.

What do you love most about your job?
The variety of its nature; one day we are filming a car TV commercial in the desert and the next day we are attending a fashion event or shopping with a personal client. This business never stops to amaze us.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome as a stylist?
There is a lot going on in the background of a stylist working for TV and editorials; tight deadlines, countless requirements from the stakeholders involved (directors, agencies, clients). Sometimes critics can fly your way at the speed of light, but we have understood and learned that being flexible and cooperative are the most important qualities when styling big productions. At the end of the day, we all have the same objective in mind, ‘to deliver a great end product’. To achieve that we must all work as a team.
What kind of projects have you been working on lately?
The past month has been hectic and full of exciting projects. We have worked on the wardrobe management for ENBD, Dodge and Toyota TV commercials. The opportunity to style the talented Joelle Mardinian for an editorial interview came as a real joy for us. In addition, we had some new personal shopping clients; and to top it all off, we designed the pilot uniforms for a new private jet airline.
Where do you go when you need inspiration for your work?
Our biggest source of inspiration, without a shadow of a doubt, is New York City. We both try to spend at least one month a year there, as we always come back to Dubai full of energy and

with fresh ideas. It is a fast paced city where you can breathe business and fashion. Creativity is in every corner of the Big Apple!
What has been the most successful way of promoting your work?
We have recently gathered forces in our joined Instagram account 'TheStylistes' as a form to express ourselves, showcase our work and what inspires us in our day-to-day activities. We believe Instagram is a great venue of communication to express who we are and our work through a series of images and videos, which we hope people enjoy as much as we do making them.
What is the favourite item you own and why?
Carla: A limited edition watch from Bvlgari. I love its versatility as I can wear it with any outfit. It is very special piece to me as it was a present from my aunt, whom I’m very close to. Marie: My favourite item is a pair of jeans from mum that I found in the attic of my grandma's house. I customized them myself and they have a sentimental value to me as well as being very comfortable and stylish.
One of the things that fashion stylists say time after time is that one does not have to have a lot of money to have a decent wardrobe. Do you share that philosophy?
Absolutely! The key to an optimal wardrobe that works is having a selection of clothing that are functional, good quality and current; but most importantly the pieces must look great on you, regardless of the brand and price. The cut should be complementing your body shape, the colour should
complement your skin undertone, hair and eyes, and the garments should fit your lifestyle so you actually wear them regularly. Hence the importance of having a professional body shape and colour analysis done, so you can build a wardrobe that works for you without needing to spend tons of money on expensive clothes that are not necessarily the best for you.
What is image consultancy? What difference do you see in the need of image management today as compared to the previous decade? Image consulting is not only about makeovers or wardrobe revamps; it is also about behaviour, body language, communication and personal branding. An image consultant analyzes and identifies the gaps that need to be filled and the messages that need to be sent, in order to achieve your optimal personal image. The need for image management has always been there, but looking back at history to where it all started back in 1970s, the demand for image consulting was coming primarily from TV personalities, celebrities and politicians. Nowadays, with globalization at its peak and the development of new technologies, the demand for image consulting has risen and is now available to everyone. People want to differentiate themselves; they want to look their best and definitely want to feel at their best.
How does image consulting work?
An image consulting session starts by understanding our clients’ physical features and how they feel about themselves. A number of analyses will take place; colour and body shape analysis, lifestyle and wardrobe review. We will then proceed to www.cpmagazine.net

the personal shopping experience where we help the client to create their new image. As professional image consultants, we highlight and empower your best features which, paired with your own style and personality, creates your optimal image. This new image will send a clear message to the world about how you want to present yourself and be perceived. That’s why image consulting sessions can change people's lives and the way they feel about themselves.
What are some of your favourite brands?
We both personally love Maje, Sandro and The Kooples as they have high quality fabrics and the most exquisite designs with a touch of something special in every garment. For high street fashion, we adore Zara as it is current, affordable and never disappoints.
Please describe your personal style?
Carla: Personal style is more than the clothing you wear, it also embodies how you feel and that reflects on the outside. I love pieces that have something special about them, being an interesting cut or even a small detail that makes that garment unique. I would consider myself to have an elegant style with a touch of modern trends. Marie: Fashion is about expressing yourself and for me I try to reflect my personality when pairing items. I try keeping updated with current trends, however I like to experiment and combine vintage pieces with modern styles. Overall my style can be described as versatile, but I mostly prefer high waisted 068

vintage jeans, paired with a customized t-shirt. On occasions I will add my leather or denim jacket to enhance my style.
Can you share the biggest lesson you’ve learned in this business?
As stylists, our aim is to provide an excellent level of service to our clients, make them happy and always reach their expectations. The biggest lessons we have learned in this business is that it is not about us and glamour doesn't follow us everywhere, as one may think. At the end of the day, we love what we do and we hope our clients feel that too.
What’s the first app, website or thing you open/do in the morning?
Over the past couple of months we have been focusing our energies and enthusiasm into our joint Instagram account TheStylistes, therefore this is first app we both check in the morning.
Who are some of your most favourite photographers you’ve worked with?
Our personal favourite is Diana Nasif. She is a German photographer of Iraqi origins with high sensitivity and creativity. Diana has the gift of connecting with people and seeing the beauty within them and that is reflected in her photographs. She has photographed celebrities such as Lady Gaga and class A top models, but also works with regular people who need beautiful photographs taken. We love working with her and she surprises us time after time with the quality and beauty of her work.
What item of clothing would you love to ban from every woman’s wardrobe?
We both agree without a doubt that we would remove from every woman’s wardrobe the invisible straps bra, especially when worn with strapless dresses, as rather than hiding the bra it brings the attention straight to the invisible (not so invisible) transparent bra straps.
If you were both magically given 3 more hours per day, what would you do with them?
If the extra 3 hours came at a time of a busy 1214 hours working day, we would definitely use them to catch up on sleep as if they came from heaven. Catching up with friends and loved ones would also be a good use of this gifted extra time, as social life is very important for both of us.
What do you do to relax?
Carla: After a stressful busy day I make sure I go to my favourite Zumba class. Dancing is one of my passions as it is a great way to release tension and have fun. Marie: I enjoy drawing and listening to music because it makes me feel calm and relaxed. It’s been influential as it also helps me think creatively. I also enjoy cooking and experimenting with new dishes as well as going to the beach.
What are your future plans?
We must admit that the Middle Eastern culture has captivated us and driven our creativity in that direction. We are currently in the process of designing a special collection of abayas to be released next Ramadan. The collection will have a lot of our personal touches in them and some innovative and functional designs that we hope will delight our audience.

WRITING MOVIE
WRONGS moviewrongs.com by: JIM WEST
ith a great cast of very funny people like Jason Bateman, Olivia Munn, Jennifer Aniston, TJ Miller, Kate McKinnon, and Rob Corddry there should be plenty of room for the writers to really serve up the laughs. Yet comedy is hard. Even with a great comedic cast, six writers, and two directors this film ends up as many films do with the best parts being in the trailer. Sad indeed for a comedy with a simple hilarious premise, and delightfully written characters. Yet sometimes too many cooks spoil the soup. These writers all each have their own successes in comedy films and it may be perhaps of their own successes and comedic styles that perhaps clashed a bit that let the film feel like it was trying to be multiple films in itself. Let me explain. In one scene Bateman and Munn don large snowmen costumes and dance to in order to get the people to loosen up. Wasn’t funny in itself, but immediately harkened to Blade of Glory style of scene (Josh Gordon and Will Speck directed that film). The nudity in the film was typical of films like Borat and Bruno, written by Dan Mazer. Then call in the misfired romantic storyline which may be the result of bad casting for Olivia Munn. Love Munn and she can be hilarious, but her and Bateman don’t strike up the awkward chemistry balance that their roles needed. So instead of going on about the slight tinges of British humor that was injected into the film most likely due to Laura Solon’s work on this film, I will instead move forward to how this film should have been written. First off, for all writers out there, Kate McKinnon is comedy GOLD. Utilize her to her fullest. Reference Ghostbusters if you need a reference. I hoped her character would’ve been the uptight by the book HR lady for 364 days a 070

year, and this one day was her let it all hang out day of the year. THAT is how her character should have been written. Corddry and McKinnon’s hate relationship should have been played on for more laughs. To me that should have been the love story in this film. Olivia Munn should have been a dressed down, tech nerd with big glasses and the audience can see she has a thing for Bateman’s character, but he doesn’t see it. Then at the party she lets the hair down and dresses up and turns all the men’s heads to include Batemen’s. That in itself could be played for laughs. Now the TJ Miller and Bateman duo had its moments but even that should have been played up a bit better to show their dynamic as not just office buddies, but actual real friends outside of work. Drop the single mom character and Asian guy from accounting bits. Not funny. At all. Aniston played her role perfectly and no changes needed there except when she showed up to Bateman’s apartment I really would have liked her to try to seduce Bateman and then the rest of the night she keeps trying to seduce him while he is trying to chase after Munn’s character. That also could’ve been played for better laughs. Then you have Jesus and Reindeer and didn’t write a special scene just for them? Oh my, what a waste. So much setup and yet no payoffs. That is perhaps the biggest missing piece here. With each scene the viewer is waiting for something hilarious and just doesn’t live up to what the setup was. The gut clenching, slap your knees punchlines never come. All this setup and it falters most likely due to trying to take on too much and focusing on all the wrong bits. Finally, don’t give away all of the funny moments in the trailer. Another huge let down. This comedy did swing for the rafters, but the ball stayed safely infield.

TOP PICKS FOR
RASPUTIN: Faith, Power, and the Twilight of the Romanovs by Douglas Smith
TALKING AS FAST AS I CAN: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls, and Everything in Between by Lauren Graham
In Talking as Fast as I Can, Lauren Graham hits pause for a moment and looks back on her life, sharing laugh-out-loud stories about growing up, starting out as an actress, and, years later, sitting in her trailer on the Parenthood set and asking herself, “Did you, um, make it?” She opens up about the challenges of being single in Hollywood (“Strangers were worried about me; that’s how long I was single!”), the time she was asked to audition her butt for a role, and her experience being a judge on Project Runway (“It’s like I had a fashion-induced blackout”).
A hundred years after his murder, Rasputin continues to excite the popular imagination as the personification of evil. Numerous biographies, novels, and films recount his mysterious rise to power as Nicholas and Alexandra's confidant and the guardian of the sickly heir to the Russian throne. His debauchery and sinister political influence are the stuff of legend, and the downfall of the Romanov dynasty was laid at his feet. But as the prizewinning historian Douglas Smith shows, the true story of Rasputin's life and death has remained shrouded in myth. A major new work that combines probing scholarship and powerful storytelling, Rasputin separates fact from fiction to reveal the real life of one of history's most alluring figures. Drawing on a wealth of forgotten documents from archives in seven countries, Smith presents Rasputin in all his complexity man of God, voice of peace, loyal subject, adulterer, drunkard.
SWING TIME TO PIXAR AND BEYOND: My Unlikely Journey with Steve Jobs to Make Entertainment History by Lawrence Levy

What Levy found was a company on the verge of failure. To Pixar and Beyond is the story of what happened next: how, working closely with Jobs, Levy produced and implemented a highly improbable plan that transformed Pixar into one of Hollywood’s greatest success stories.

Two brown girls dream of being dancers but only one, Tracey, has talent. The other has ideas: about rhythm and time, about black bodies and black music, about what constitutes a tribe, or makes a person truly free. It's a close but complicated childhood friendship that ends abruptly in their early twenties, never to be revisited, but never quite forgotten, either. Dazzlingly energetic and deeply human, Swing Time is a story about friendship and music and stubborn roots, about how we are shaped by these things and how we can survive them. Moving from northwest London to West Africa, it is an exuberant dance to the music of time.

MESSY: The Power of Disorder to Transform Our Lives by Tim Harford
Messy: The Power of Disorder to Transform Our Lives celebrates the benefits that messiness has in our lives: why it’s important, why we resist it, and why we should embrace it instead. Using research from neuroscience, psychology, social science, as well as captivating examples of real people doing extraordinary things, Tim Harford explains that the human qualities we value – creativity, responsiveness, resilience – are integral to the disorder, confusion, and disarray that produce them. From the music studio of Brian Eno to the Lincoln Memorial with Martin Luther King, Jr., from the board room to the classroom, messiness lies at the core of how we innovate, how we achieve, how we reach each other – in short, how we succeed.
DEAD GIRLS SOCIETY by Michelle Krys
Hope is sick of everyone treating her like she’s breakable. Sure, she has cystic fibrosis (basically really bad lungs), but she’s tired of being babied by her mom and her overprotective best friend, Ethan, not to mention worrying about paying for her expensive medication and how she’s going to afford college. And she’s bored with life in her run-down New Orleans suburb. When an invitation arrives from a mysterious group that calls itself the Society, Hope jumps at the chance for some excitement. This could be her ticket out. All she has to do is complete a few dares and she might win some real money.
SCRAPPY LITTLE NOBODY by Anna Kendrick
A collection of humorous autobiographical essays by the Academy Award-nominated actress and star of Up in the Air and Pitch Perfect. Even before she made a name for herself on the silver screen starring in films like Pitch Perfect, Up in the Air, Twilight, and Into the Woods, Anna Kendrick was unusually small, weird, and “10 percent defiant.” At the ripe age of thirteen, she had already resolved to “keep the crazy inside my head where it belonged. Forever. But here’s the thing about crazy: It. Wants. Out.” In Scrappy Little Nobody, she invites readers inside her brain, sharing extraordinary and charmingly ordinary stories with candor and winningly wry observations.

BIONIC Collection The inspiration of DELACIER’s newest collection is different as it used to be. Dora Domokos was inspired by a story of a young girl who could be a rolemodel. Her story, the way of thinking can be a huge motivation boost for all of us. Who is she? "1 year ago I read about Reka Lukoviczi’s story in an interview in which she told how she lost her left leg in a car accident. After this strategy she focused on rehabilitation and she got back on her foot. Nowadays she walks with prosthesis also she is able to do sports and lives an active life then before. She changed her desperation and sadness into positive energy and she inspires a lot of people on her blog, on social media platform as well as on her courses. Her way of thinking was so motivating for me and I finally realized that she should be the theme of my new collection.” said the designer. The powder painted steel and metal coloured leather become one not just aesthetically but functionally as the prothesis and the human body. The mat tones are unique by the high tech leathers which makes a dynamic contrast on each piece. The string art technique also appears on the jewelries as the brand’s trademark softening the futuristic mood. In the BIONIC collection next to bags, clutches and belts the show pieces are also part of the collection. „As a designer my priority is creating a value and this is what the brand represents. For me it is also important to work people with the same value. So this is why I think it is important to make this collection which face is Reka.” 080

Häagen-Dazs, the most savoured ice-cream brand worldwide since 1961, inaugurated its 5th brand-new branch in Manqaf, The Gate Mall, ground floor, while adding new ice cream products and juices to its menu. The launch event took place in the presence of employees of Mohamed Naser Al-Hajery & Sons, the exclusive Häagen-Dazs dealer in Kuwait, along with media delegates who savoured the new offerings of mouth-watering ice cream and juices flavours. Häagen-Dazs has been making quality ice cream like no other since 1961. The world's best-tasting ice cream is created in 24 flavours and from the best ingredients that are carefully selected from around the world. Each HäagenDazs ice cream flavour starts with real creamunlike the ordinary ice cream that is made from milk, eggs and sugar- which is blended with carefully selected ingredients to create an ice cream with a smooth, silky and unique velvety texture and unforgettable taste. The founder, Reuben Mattus' vision was to make the best ice cream in the world using high quality, carefully selected ingredients. Reuben believed that if you were going to indulge in ice cream, it should be a real and fulfilling experience rather than the 'cold and sweet stuff' of his time. Reuben's ambition was to create the world's best-tasting ice cream and his devotion to the highest standards changed the way people thought about ice cream. The Häagen-Dazs philosophy remains the same to this day. We believe that everyone deserves to experience pleasure that is fulfilling and real and this guides everything we do.

Hublot prides itself, among others, on its exclusive, special edition watches that were launched as an homage to cities and countries. Many of these timepieces celebrate unique characteristics or landmarks of places around the Middle East. This year, the luxury Swiss watch manufacturer is presenting, once again, a watch dedicated to its collectors and customers in Kuwait: the Classic Fusion Chronograph Kuwait Edition. This new collaboration highlights the brand’s goal of bringing the past to the future, which manifests in the sturdy partnership between Hublot and its partners, Morad Yousuf Behbehani Group. The Classic Fusion Chronograph Kuwait Edition brings a new take to the existing Classic Fusion Kuwait, with a striking blue carbon fiber bezel and a lacquered blue sunray satin-finished dial adorned with the Kuwait “8” logo in the colors of the Kuwait flag. “Kuwait is a special market for us with more and more Hublotistas every year. Dasman Diabetes Institute Held the Annual Open Day Commemorating World Diabetes Day 2016
Dasman Diabetes Institute (DDI), a leading campaigner for diabetes awareness in Kuwait, held an informative event to commemorate World Diabetes Day on Thursday, 17 November, 2016 at its premises. The event allowed visitors to consult with diabetes specialists and dietitians as well as gather healthy information from booths that explained various facts of diabetes and promoted healthy lifestyle modification. Around 1000 guests attended the event underlining the interest in Kuwait to prevent and manage this dangerous lifestyle disease. Many of the booths at the event were about educating visitors on proper dietary habits, sage physical activities and oral health. At this event, there were informative booths offered by the Institute, some of which provided blood glucose testing, funduscopic and podiatric exams, as well as nutritional, educational and fitness consultations by the Institute’s experts. In addition, the event hosted booths by the Kuwait Diabetes Society, Oral Health Program (Ministry of Health), LOYAC, Kuwait Finance House amongst others, providing assistance to people living with diabetes and the general public. The primary goal of the event is to prevent the complications of diabetes in people with diabetes through raising awareness about the complications, and empowering those affected by diabetes to proactively take control of their diabetes and improve their quality of life. The main key messages were to take control of blood sugar, watch your cholesterol, keep blood pressure in check, don’t forget your kidneys, look out for your eyes and examine your feet. The event reflected an exciting environment for everyone, and the activities were tailored towards young children through fun shows featuring mascots, a magic show, and other educational activities. “Holding such events and activities stems from Dasman Diabetes Institute’s mission statement, where health promotion and awareness are a priority for the Institute. Since its establishment by the Kuwait Foundation of the Advancement of Sciences in 2006, the Institute organizes and takes part in many events and campaigns annually to shed light on diabetes and health in general. This is in accordance with the Institute’s belief that, ‘Prevention is better than cure’”, Dr. Qais Al-Duwairi, Director-General of Dasman Diabetes Institute said.
The campaign will support children’s development and learning, equal participation, sports, and of course, play. For every children’s book and toy sold between 20 November and 24 December, the IKEA Foundation will make a donation of EUR 1 to support children’s right to play and develop in some of the world’s most vulnerable communities. The IKEA Foundation’s partners in this campaign are Handicap International Federation, Room to Read, Save the Children, Special Olympics, UNICEF and War Child. The programmes supported by the campaign focus on children affected by dissabilities, the Syrian conflict, unsafe migration, and poverty. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Children states that every child should have the right to play. Sadly not every child enjoys this right. Millions of children are on the move, making them vulnerable to discrimination, violence, abuse and exploitation, according to a play insights document released by IKEA Foundation. The insights also revealed that children with disabilities are often the most likely to be excluded from play and learning activities. “Many children around the world lack safe spaces to play. War and disasters are forcing more children than ever before to flee their homes and make difficult and dangerous journeys. Many more miss out on the chance to play because of poverty and prejudice. Children suffer the most in a crisis situation, and we are committed to upholding and raising awareness of their rights.” Per Heggenes, CEO of IKEA Foundation. “Play is super important. Not just for children, but for adults too! It sparks creativity, and helps us learn and develop. In partnership with the IKEA Foundation, Let’s Play for Change has the potential to change the lives of thousands of children around the world.” Ahmad Al Humaidhi, Store Manager of IKEA Kuwait.

You probably noticed that envelop looks just like the noun envelope, minus that last letter "e", and that's an easy way to help you remember its meaning, too. Picture what an envelope does - it seals a letter completely inside, or envelops it. Envelop can also be used in a symbolic way, to describe something that consumes or occupies your mind. If the pretty girl you just met starts to envelop your thoughts, your work will suffer because you can't concentrate. Envelop comes from the late 14c. word envolupen, meaning "be involved in."
c. When something envelops you, it wraps around you. The Snuggie Blanket is so popular because it envelops your body, leaving only your head uncovered. Sure, it looks dorky, but it keeps you extra warm.
