HOW TO SAFELY SEND YOUR HOLIDAY GIFTS SHIPPING TIPS No matter what you’re shipping for the holidays, the same basic rules apply to send gifts to their destination safely and securely. The packing and shipping experts at FedEx recommend the following: GET YOUR GIFT READY TO BE PACKAGED • •

Determine if your gift is sturdy or fragile Wrap items securely with bubble wrap

SELECT YOUR SHIPPING BOX • •

If what you’re shipping is fragile like a vase or glass ornaments, consider placing one small box inside a larger one for additional protection

SEAL THE BOX ON ALL SIDES • • •

Use packing tape, not duct or masking tape Use the H-tape method Don’t wrap the box with paper or string

LABEL THE BOX INSIDE AND OUT 4 FT HIGH

• • •

Add label to largest surface Include your full address and the recipient's Must have name, address, P.O. Box and 24-hr phone number As an added precaution, put a card with contact/delivery information inside the box as well

You can ship your golf clubs, favorite framed art piece, or even a rocking horse. We offer specialty packaging solutions for all your shipping needs

CUSHION THE GIFT • •

Use padded material such as bubble wrap or shredded paper Avoid newspaper [it adds extra weight to the package]

ending gifts home for the holidays? No matter what you are shipping, taking the time to pack it properly will protect and secure your packages during their journey. FedEx Express has some top tips to help your presents arrive safely, for a happier holiday season. 1.Consider the type of item you are sending. Is it sturdy building blocks for a child or a delicate crystal vase for a favourite aunt? The type of item will determine the level of protection it needs. Sturdier items will travel better with a single layer of bubble wrap, while more fragile goods will need more protective padding. 2.Ensure that your item can be shipped. Every country has different import rules and not all items can be shipped to all destinations. For example, Australia won’t accept certain plant or animal products, which includes wooden beads. There are also general flight restrictions on certain items, such as some smartphone batteries. Check with the FedEx customer service team if you have any questions about your item before you pack it. 3.Select your shipping box. Once your item is bubble wrapped, place it into a sturdy box. A new one is ideal, without any holes, tears or corner dents, and without any existing labels. Ensure that the shipping box is the right size for your item; you want enough space to allow for ample wrapping, but not so much that the item will roll around. Add extra padding to keep the item secure. 16

DECEMBER 2017

4.Two is better than one! If your item is fragile, you can place it inside a second box. Wrap the first one in bubble wrap, or provide padding between the two boxes to provide an extra layer of protection. Padding can be bubble wrap, shredded paper or foam chips. Don’t use newspaper though, as this will increase the weight and, therefore, the cost, of your package. 5.Seal the box on all sides. Use packing tape to seal your box. Do not use duct tape or masking tape. The best way to provide a strong seal is to use the H-tape method: seal the topmost seam first, then tape over when sealing the two short edges. Don’t wrap your box with paper or string. 6.International shipments may require a commercial invoice. Please contact FedEx Customer Service for more information. 7.Add a label. You need to apply a clearly-written label onto the largest surface of the box. If possible, print the label instead of handwriting it to ensure that it is readable. Be sure to include the full address of the recipient, including name, location address, postal code and a 24hour phone number where the recipient can be contacted. You also need to include your own full address and phone number. As an extra precaution, add a card with the recipient’s and your own full contact information inside the parcel. 8.Your package is ready to be shipped!

MAKING PLANS Gill Sherry

T

he end of the year is always a good time to look back and reflect on the highs and lows of the previous twelve months. Usually, it’s a rollercoaster of emotions as we recall the laughter, tears and everything in between. But it’s also a great opportunity to learn from our mistakes; a lesson in life that should not be ignored. It’s easy to recall the big things - a milestone birthday, the death of a close friend, perhaps a new job – but don’t forget to remind yourself of the little things too. These things have probably influenced your decisions and your moods throughout the year and have the power to do the same throughout the next year too. Most of us have a smart phone these days so it’s easy to scroll through our photographs and relive those moments. Remember the art exhibition where you promised yourself you would start to paint? Or the fabulous sunset when you wished for a better camera? Not forgetting the trip to the cinema when you vowed to take a trip to Sydney or London. Sometimes our hopes and dreams get buried under the weight of our everyday routine but it’s important to take action and make things happen. Most of us make New Year Resolutions. Admittedly, not all of them are successful. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve vowed to learn to speak French but have never improved beyond the text book basics learnt at school. Others, however, I’ve managed to achieve and have ticked them off my list with a big, satisfied grin. So, what does 2018 have in store? From my own personal point of view, a trip to New York is a must. I’ve been lucky enough to visit this incredible city on more than one occasion, each trip more memorable than the last. However, it’s been almost ten years since my last visit and my American relatives are not getting any younger. Neither, for that matter, am I. So it’s time to touch base and catch up with those special people who live far away. It’s a trip that’s long overdue and one I’m looking forward to immensely. I’ve also vowed to finish writing my book. This project has been on the back-burner for a while but as I said earlier, life just gets in the way. However, if this novel is ever going to be finished I need to stop procrastinating and start writing. It’s easy to find excuses but at the end of day, it isn’t going to write itself. I have a story worth telling, so tell it I shall. 18

DECEMBER 2017

One thing’s for sure, I’m not short of inspiration. Wherever I look, I’m surrounded by beauty. Be it nature, people, culture or architecture, there’s wonder and marvel around every corner. I’ve often tried to capture these sights on camera but as much as I love my trusty smart phone, it’s not the tool for serious photography. I’ve often wished for a camera capable of capturing those magical moments; those unforgettable sunsets, human imperfections, building shades and textures, even the contours of the moon. Perhaps 2018 is the year to invest in the right camera and progress from snapping amateur pictures to taking ‘proper’ photographs. Healthy eating is one of our most common New Year Resolutions. I do try to keep fit and healthy. I walk every day, I swim once or twice a week and I avoid takeaways and fatty foods. I do sometimes give in to temptation and succumb to a strawberry tart or a slice of carrot cake (I am human after all) but most of the time I’m pretty disciplined when it comes to diet and exercise although I know for a fact I don’t drink enough water. I’m a firm believer that ‘you are what you eat’ so fruit and vegetables get the green light over chips and cakes. Having said that, I should probably cut down on the cheese! Another thing that becomes evident when looking back is that people come and go. It’s certainly true in my case, living away from home, that you learn who your friends are. True friends remain true no matter how far away they are. Others, however, show their true colours and let you down at a time when you need them most. Maybe 2018 is the year to recognise those who have supported you, loved you and, more importantly, never forgotten you. Going forward I shall certainly concentrate on those who have proven themselves to be true friends and forget about the selfish few with an agenda all of their own. Thinking back over the last twelve months (and beyond) there are a number of socalled friends who have let me down, disregarded our friendship or simply walked away. Life’s too short to worry about those who are only interested in themselves. It’s time to move on. It’s actually quite liberating to realise that you no longer care what certain people think. You are free to live your life as you choose, do what you want to do, dress how you want to dress and spend time with people you care about. If you want to paint, then paint. If you want to act, then act. There really is nothing stopping you from doing that one thing that you really want to do. It’s a new year, so why not a new you?

WANT TO START A SMALL BUSINESS? DO IT RIGHT!

S

ince 2014, people in Kuwait have become interested in having a small business which they can run at home in addition to their main job. As a result of the benefits associated with such small businesses, people have become eager to work and even more interested in handiwork like baking, cooking, accessory crafting and tailoring, all of which inspire others to set up a business of their own. Running a business has always been beneficial to the pocket as well as to the national economy. But as the small business concept grew, problems began to develop. Selling a badly measured dress not of the agreed measurements; or a dress of inferior quality to the one expected by the customer; perhaps the customer was unable to find the supplier when trying to fix the item or exchange it, or when wanting to complain to the Ministry of Commerce in order to have their money refunded. What if someone bought a cake to find it was rotten? It is risky dealing with someone who is unknown and messaging through WhatsApp is not ideal business communication. From the business owner’s point of view, it gets even worse if the Ministry of Commerce confiscates the assets and possessions relating to your business because you violated their laws. What a terrible loss. People who are running their own small business at home still do not understand that the laws of the Ministry of Commerce must be applied to their work. Which brings out the question, ‘Do the regulations of the Ministry of Commerce apply to ALL selling or buying processes?’ The answer is NO. When someone sells for one time only it is a civil process by law and because everyone has a right to buy, sell or freely manage their possessions, the civil law will be applied. However, when the selling process is occurring frequently, then it clearly reveals a business trade which makes the commercial law involved in this process. For example, if you sold your old car to someone you would not be expected to have a licence from the Ministry of Commerce to start a business. But if you keep buying cars to sell them then the frequency reflects the intent of a business plan which means the Ministry of Commerce is going to supervise the business and there must be a licence before practicing such a business. It would be really disappointing and frustrating if you spent your money on fabrics, accessories and tailoring to make a luxurious piece, but the Ministry of Commerce decided to confiscate all of your hard work and expensive assets because you didn't have a licence to do business. You wouldn’t only lose your possessions but you might also have to pay fines or financial compensation as a result. For example, if you sold a cake that turned out to be rotten and, as a direct result, people went to hospital with food poisoning. Please note that the regulations of the Ministry of Commerce are for the safety of each party involved. People who are running a business must apply for a licence from the Ministry of Commerce so they won't later face the consequences of violating the regulations. The Ministry of Commerce has made it easier to apply for the licence through their online website. They even have a special licence for small businesses. Best of luck to you. I wish you a successful, legal, safe business. 20

DON’T STEP INTO 2018 WITH YOUR 2017, 2002, 1996…. PROBLEMS! Naseera Hoorzook

H

ow many of you are carrying years and years of stuff on your aching shoulders?

Pointless altercations that happened at 10 years old. Superfluous accusations thrown at you at 15 years old. Excessive negative thoughts as long as you can remember. Redundant labels and names that were plastered on your back, your being and your heart from childhood. Ridiculous foul play and gossip to bring you down as a teen. Trivial arguments that still plague you from college. Extra burdens of others that you have somehow decided to take on. Uncalled-for feelings of low self worth still hanging on you as an adult. Distorted thoughts carving your realities that are far from the truth. People who leave you feeling worthless yet for some reason these people remain attached. Spare wheels that sponge off you like parasites. Those places and things that break your fragile spirit. Those ‘AAAGH’ moments you keep allowing yourself to have. Guilt. Resentment. Hurt. Hang-ups. Secrets. Shame. Grudges. LET THEM GO. SLOUGH THEM OFF. DROP THEM NOW! You can move into 2018 feeling lighter, free of attachments and free of unnecessary burdens that bear you down. Do you want to stand up tall, strong, nimble and ready to go? Here are some points to get you moving. Start by writing a letter to yourself, an honest letter that is for your eyes only. Think about the thoughts that weigh you down, limitations you place on yourself and the ways you are your own harsh critic - and often your own worst enemy. Are there specific things that get you bogged down? Things said by other people that hook you in to feeling heavy? Are there thoughts you keep sending yourself quietly that break you? Can you pin point specifically what the triggers are? It could be places, times, moments, people, circumstances. Look back at each moment and think deeply about what you felt about yourself. Did something happen before that? What could have made it better/worse? 22

DECEMBER 2017

Did you know that most of those somewhat negative observances may actually have brought you some relief or safety? Think about any positive outcomes from these very dull and heavy thoughts and behaviors. While we know there could be benefits (such as safety, defense, coping) from the process that brought you the baggage, it may not have been the most ideal process to follow. How could these processes be altered so that the outcomes are less weighty and more suited to relieving you of the burdens you carry? Turn each of these negative thoughts into positive thoughts. Challenge some of your beliefs to be less judgemental and more accepting. Weed out people who stir up the dirt and drag you down. Here’s a table to brainstorm on before writing your letter:

Your own Those of Others Why does it bother you? How can you let it go? What alternatives can you replace it with?

Now that you have reflected deeply, ask yourself what it is that you need going forward. Perhaps you need some time scheduled doing things that make you thrive. You may want to find a mentor or coach to work with you and support you through the process of letting go. Consciously make an effort to acknowledge the things in you that are unique and special. Focus on a new thing a day, a new blessing, a new attribute that makes you, YOU.

“It’s cold and I’m hungry!” HOW TO MANAGE YOUR WINTER NUTRITION 1. Pick the Right Carbs

During the cold, winter months, you may feel yourself craving more carbohydrates than usual. There's a good reason for this: with fewer hours of sunlight, the level of ‘feel-good’ serotonin stored in your brain can become depleted. To compensate for declining serotonin levels, your brain tells your body it needs more, resulting in an increased craving for carbohydrate-loaded comfort foods that boost serotonin production. But not all carbohydrates are the same, so avoid simple carbohydrates such as sugary snacks and eat complex carbohydrates that will take longer to break down and provide a longer, more sustained level of energy. Opt for whole grain bread and pastas, beans, and think of seasonal foods; good wintertime sources of carbohydrates include pumpkins, squashes and sweet potatoes.

2. Vitamin D

Fewer hours of sunlight each day and colder temperatures that keep you indoors can result in your body taking in less vitamin D than it receives during the summer, which is generated in our bodies via sunlight. For this reason, you need to ensure that you receive enough vitamin D during the winter. Sources of vitamin D include fortified milk and other dairy products, eggs especially the yolks - and fatty fish such as salmon.

3. Boost Your Immunity

There's no sure way to prevent catching a cold, but there are some steps you can take to minimize the risk. Focus on foods that boost your immune system such as probiotics, present in yogurt, and antioxidants present in foods and vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, citrus fruit, sweet potato and spinach. Increasing your zinc intake can also help you fight off infections. Foods rich in zinc include fish, poultry, eggs, milk and unprocessed grains and cereals.

4. Beware of Overeating

Both adults and kids have a tendency to overeat during the winter; therefore, it is very important to watch your portion sizes. To avoid a winter waistline try using a smaller plate, filling half your plate with vegetables and avoiding distractions (like the TV) at meal times. Try to reduce ‘non-hungry eating’ by asking yourself whether you are actually hungry or whether instead you might be looking for food because you are bored or tired. In conclusion, even when it is cold, your body needs to keep hydrated and you still need to drink 6-8 glasses of fluid each day - and remain active! Winter is not a reason to gain weight, on the contrary, remember that summer bodies are made during the winter time. 24

DECEMBER 2017

FESTIVE FOOLS

I

’m already in ‘Bah Humbug’ mode and it’s not even Christmas yet. Why is it everyone seems to get ill during the festive period? Not only that, but we all eat too much, exercise too little and watch far too much TV – usually just repeats of movies and other mediocre programmes we’ve all seen before. But my ‘Bah Humbug’ attitude this year has been brought on by the amount of money we’re all spending – not just on food and other festive ‘necessities’ but on unwanted gifts. I don’t want to sound ungrateful, but why do people insist of buying gifts that are, as my mother always says, neither use nor ornament. I really don’t want a luxury candle that smells of pine needles or cinnamon. Nor do I want, or need, a jar of luxury bath crystals particularly as I don’t even have a bath - and I certainly don’t want a luxury box of chocolates. Because that’s the other thing, why does everything suddenly become ‘luxury’ at Christmas time? When does a normal candle become a luxury candle, or an average box of chocolates become a luxury box of chocolates? It’s simply a way for manufacturers and suppliers to prize more money out of unwitting customers by up-grading the packaging of a standard product. Perfume is another example. Buying perfume as a gift is normally quite a safe option – assuming you know for sure that the brand of scent you are buying is actually liked by the recipient. However, at Christmas time, you’re encouraged by the manufacturer (and store) to buy a gift set rather than just a bottle. Not only is this a more expensive option, it probably includes items that will never be used. Talcum powder, for example. Do people still actually use this stuff? Or shower milk. Shower 26

DECEMBER 2017

milk?! Have we suddenly gone back in time to the days of Cleopatra? If you’re lucky, the set may include a bottle of body lotion – something that might actually be used. Unfortunately, nine times out ten, although the lotion is meant to smell the same as the perfume, in reality it smells nothing like it and will remain in the bathroom cabinet gathering dust with the shower milk. Such nonsense extends to almost all products in the run up to Christmas. Tea bags and condiments are suddenly packaged and promoted as ‘the ideal gift’. But if they’re not used throughout the year, what makes you think they’ll be used in December, or January, or February....? Chances are, they’ll still be in the cupboard when you’re looking for gift inspiration next year. I realise it’s harsh, but how many of you have received a gift that you have absolutely no intention of using? There’s probably a pair of reindeer socks stashed in your wardrobe or a jar of pomegranate and apricot chutney in your kitchen cupboard. How about a glow in the dark keyring or a novelty stress ball? People often say it’s the thought that counts but it’s safe to say, if you’ve received one of the above, no thought went in to it at all and the only party to benefit, is the seller. The secret is not to buy into these ‘novelty’ and ‘luxury’ items. You might be fooled into purchasing a fancy box of tea bags with a complimentary mug, or an expensive bottle of perfume with free body lotion but the truth is, they’re not free at all. The price is simply inflated to take into account the extra product, additional packaging and, most blatantly of all, the time of year. I’m not really a Scrooge, I’ve just learnt from experience that people are often more thankful for your presence than they are for your presents.

OCTOBER 2017 NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2017 2017

Please introduce yourself to our readers: My name is Dana AlRubaish. I was a TV anchor for eight years and news editor for one year. I am now an influencer in social media and a freelance TV host.

Tell us about your education: I have a bachelor degree in accounting from Gulf University of Science and Technology.

How did you get interested in TV? Tell us about your journey to becoming a newscaster: Actually it was a dream of mine to be a TV presenter ever since I was little girl so when I grew up I enrolled myself and took a training course in broadcasting for three months. Then I really did fancy the idea of becoming a TV host and later, a news anchor.

Tell us about your first experience as a newscaster. How did it feel? Like I said it was my dream, but when that dream became real for the first time I was so terrified of making a mistake on live television.

throughout my career I have been inspired by both men and women who have their own unique way of reporting the news.

What were some of the challenges you had to face and how did you overcome them? To have to speak the news report in a literary Arabic (fus'ha). I trained myself nonstop until I overcame that.

What made you decide to take a break from TV? Unfortunately the news channel Al-Watan TV closed down so I took some time off and then worked at AlAdalah TV for one month. I am now expanding to new forms of TV programs, not just the news.

Now you are a well-known social media influencer, how do you feel the change? Now I schedule my appointments in my own free time and since am a freelancer I have no commitments.

When it comes to news casting, who are you inspired by and who is your role model?

Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are three very different platforms, although they all fall under the Social Media umbrella. How have you learned to navigate around these platforms and what are the main differences when you interact on them?

To be honest I can't say a specific name because

As a news reporter I started on twitter and later got into

Instagram where I shared EVERYTHING! And don’t forget snapchat! As for my interacting, lately on twitter I only share my thoughts and some famous quotes that I like. Instragram is more my professional portfolio where I share my photo shoots and what I have accomplished. Snapchat is where I share everything about my daily routine. Through snapchat I really do feel the love of my followers and I enjoy getting to talk to them and interact with them every single day.

Which people or books have had the most influence on you? From Zero to One by Peter Thiel. The Wisdom of Sundays by Oprah Winfrey.

What would you say is the number one key to success in life or any career? Never give up.

Tell us about some of your hobbies: For starters I like reading, shopping, travelling to new places that I've never been to, entertainment like the theater and going to the movies - and of course trying out exotic foods.

What is your favourite food and some of your favourite places to dine in Kuwait? For me Lebanese and Japanese cuisines are my favourites. I really do recommend Lebnany and Sakura - these are my two favorite restaurants, period.

Your favourite travel destination? Turkey. Any place in Turkey because you get a European feeling with Islamic traditions.

What do you do to relax? I spend time in the spa, or stay home watching a movie or reading a good book.

What is your favourite quote? What goes around comes back around. #karma

One thing you cannot leave the home without? My phone.

Share some of your plans for the future: With my future in social media, I want to expand to more countries, Inshallah. As for my career, I want to have my own live television program.

SKINCARE FOR WINTER IN KUWAIT

N

ow that winter is officially here in Kuwait, it's time to adjust your skincare routine along with your wardrobe. Cold temperatures, change in humidity, exposure to indoor heaters and dry air tend to sap skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry and stressed. These elemental conditions can also exasperate skin sensitivity, redness, itching or flaking, and even lead to the development of skin conditions such as eczema. It’s therefore important to follow a few basic principles:

1.WASH WITH LUKEWARM WATER: Hot showers and baths always feel good in the winter, but when you can, particularly when just washing your face or hands, choose lukewarm water to avoid stripping oils away from the skin.

2.CHOOSE CLEANSER AND MOISTURIZER CAREFULLY: Dry skin is more than just unsightly and uncomfortable; it can lead to serious skin problems such as worsening of eczema, psoriasis, and cause winter itch. I would recommend investing in a hydrating cleanser and good moisturizer. Some over-the-counter moisturizers have petroleum-based ingredients that can actually further dry your skin in the winter months. Be sure to choose a smart formula that has natural, nourishing ingredients. Go for an oil-based rather than a water-based solution, as it’s more likely to help your skin retain moisture in the winter.

3.MOISTURIZE IMMEDIATELY AFTERWARDS: After cleansing, don’t leave the skin naked for more than 30 seconds, as this can dehydrate it, leading to increased dryness. Apply a hydrating toner and moisturizer to seal in moisture.

40

DECEMBER 2017

4.EXFOLIATE:

8.MONITOR SCALY SKIN FOR DERMATITIS:

Moisture can’t get in if the dead cells are too plentiful. Find an exfoliating mask and use it on your face and your hands, as well as gently on your lips, then follow immediately with moisturizer.

If you notice scaling around your nose and eyebrows in the winter months you may be developing a dermatitis thought to be exacerbated by yeast. Cold winter weather is also a known trigger. I recommend checking with your doctor and applying Canesten cream to the affected areas twice a day for a week and every so often to reduce recurrence. If you also use a very gentle skin wash and moisturize twice a day it will help. Sometimes an antiinflammatory cream may be needed too for a short time, and your doctor can advise here.

5.SUNSCREEN: Winter weather appears to be less sunny, but remember those harmful UV rays are still out there. Always protect skin with a safe sunscreen and wear protective hats and clothing.

6.DRINK: We tend to drink less water in the winter because we turn to hot drinks like cocoa and tea, but don’t forget that your skin needs hydration from the inside, out. A little warm water with lemon can be very refreshing and hydrating at the same time.

7.EAT A BALANCED DIET: If we eat a balanced diet, vitamin supplements are not necessary for skin health. They’re recommended only if a deficiency has been identified, such as low iron or B12 levels. Zinc is thought to be good for hair, skin and nails and may improve healing. Biotin has been shown to reduce nail fragility. Foods with Omega- 3 may benefit your skin.

9.PROTECT LIPS FROM LICK ECZEMA: Licking sore lips will only exacerbate dryness and can cause what is referred to as ‘lick eczema’. Make sure your lips are sealed with an effective ointment at all times.

10.CONSIDER PROFESSIONAL SKIN TREATMENTS: Winter is a great time of year for skin treatments. We always worry about peels and laser treatment in the summer months. With sun exposure before or after such procedures there is a higher risk of unwanted postinflammatory hyper-pigmentation. Autumn and winter therefore represents an opportunity. I would, however, suggest planning ahead to make sure your skin has time to settle and be at its peak for the party season.

MAGIC DESTINATIONS FOR A WINTER ESCAPE

N

ew Year´s Eve is a time most of us look forward to putting the old year behind us and starting with a fresh slate in the new year. Many people believe that how we ring in the new year also has bearing on what the year will bring us.

With that in mind, this month in Bonus Miles we have curated a globe-trotting guide to magic winter escapes, where you can welcome 2018 in spectacular surroundings. From a romantic getaway in an igloo under the Northern Lights, to the beaches of Cambodia, the vibe of the streets of Havana in Cuba, the silence of the Liwa Desert in Abu Dhabi or the most exclusive island in Australia, kick off a brand new year on the right foot and in the right place.

Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort Where: Saariselkä, Finland

Kakslauttanen is one of the best places in the world to wonder at the magical glow of the Northern Lights. As long as it’s dark and the skies are clear, there’s always a chance to marvel at the miraculous aurora. What makes Kakslauttanen so special is that you can enjoy the most amazing viewing experience from their iconic glass igloos. The story of the igloos, now a global phenomenon, originated when Jussi Eiramo, the owner, wanted to give his guests the chance to admire the spellbinding glow of the Northern Lights and the arctic sky from the comfort of their own beds. He designed a prototype and the first igloos were built in 1999. The rest, as they say, is history. The igloos are made of thermal glass, so even though it might be icy cold outside, inside it's always deliciously warm. With no city lights to spoil the view, you can simply lie back and enjoy nature’s very own firework display. Even without the Northern Lights making an appearance, a night under the arctic sky is still an unforgettable experience. https://kakslauttanen.kuvat.fi/

Southern Ocean Lodge

Where: Kangaroo Island, Australia Graced with sweeping horizons of pristine wilderness, Kangaroo Island is renowned as Australia’s Galapágos. Kangaroos, koalas, seals, dolphins and whales frolic to everyone’s delight in this ‘zoo without fences’. Unsurpassed ocean views are the name of the game at Southern Ocean Lodge, which stretches out along a cliff top above Kangaroo Island’s Hanson Bay, offering a magic silence, a rare moment of glorious solitude and peace. The location is breathtaking, but there’s also real beauty in the property itself, which was by Australian architect Max Pritchard. Each room has uninterrupted views of sea and sky. In the communal Great Room, wraparound windows showcase the ocean and the seemingly unending vegetation that blankets the inland. The panoramas all say ‘rugged, raw, untamed’ but inside, every feature is sophisticated, whether it’s the architectural grandeur or smaller design details like heated tile floors, rain showers and soft Bemboka linens. The satellite Southern Spa is a peaceful journey away from the main lodge, reached by a coastal boardwalk among native mallee. With the oxygen-charged ocean pounding below, this intimate and serene sanctuary appears above sheer limestone cliffs, offering views of the great sweep of the southern sky stretching towards the imagined Antarctic. https://southernoceanlodge.com.au/

Knai Bang Chatt

Where: Kep, Cambodia, Kep was known at the turn of the century as ‘Kep Sur Mer’, an exclusive seaside getaway for the colonial French elite. In the 50s during the Golden Age of Cambodia, it continued to be a popular holiday and residential destination for rich Khmers overlooking the Gulf of Thailand against the backdrop of green-forested mountains. Today Kep is as yet, untouched by tourists, with wide streets and crumbling colonial villas. The best hotel in town is the architecturally important Knai Bang Chatt. Located just over two hours from Phnom Penh, Knai Bang Chatt boasts an iconic design history from the Le Corbusier School of Architecture and gives an authentic taste of today’s ‘real Cambodia’, revealing a peaceful way of life beyond the temples, with a range of cultural, coastal and rural destination experiences. Following the hotel´s philosophy of relaxation and tranquility, encouraging guests to disconnect and rejuvenate, each room is individually designed and minimalist, following the Wabi Sabi Japanese tradition of finding beauty in natural imperfections. There is no artwork hanging on the walls, instead it is the carefully curated selection of natural materials, earthy hues, local antiques and artifacts, which create a rustic feel. http://www.knaibangchatt.com/

Hotel Saratoga

Where: Havana, Cuba Havana is quickly becoming the go-to destination for a sun-soaked city break unlike any other! With famous faces from the Rolling Stones to the Kardashians having already paid a visit to the Caribbean island, it's firmly establishing itself as a glamorous destination. But the great news is that you don't need a celebrity budget to go exploring. Havana is not just Cuba's vibrant capital where everything happens and around which the whole island revolves; Havana has a certain and peculiar magic of its own even if stripped of its privileged title of capital. As a matter of fact, it was after its own merit that it earned its position as capital and it did so in 1556 after being declared the island's most desirable, best strategically located port for trade. Havana’s Saratoga, the preferred hotel of visiting celebrities such as Beyonce or Mick Jagger, is the pearl of the Cuban Capital, a historic gem. Dating back to 1879, Hotel Saratoga moved to its current location – diagonally across from Havana’s capitol building – sometime between 1915 and 1930. The hotel remained a vibrant hub, particularly for artists and intellectuals, until the 1960s, when the government nationalized the property. http://www.hotel-saratoga.com

Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara Where: Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Luxurious, remote and romantic. Almost a fairytale from ‘1001 nights’, camels, sand dunes and breathtaking sunsets are all part of the decor at Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara. The property seems to spring out of nowhere, a luxurious oasis in the midst of the mystic Liwa Desert. Set in the middle of the Rub’ al Khali or Empty Quarter, the largest uninterrupted sand mass in the world, the hotel is isolated from the outside world, yet is less than 200km away from Abu Dhabi. Outside, the desert heat rages; inside is cool, calm and brimming with Middle Eastern opulence: arches twinkle with Arabic lanterns, palm-lined courtyards centre on tinkling fountains.

46

DECEMBER 2017

What can you do at Qasar Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara apart from nothing? You can soak in the desert landscape in the free-form swimming pool, learn the cherished Arabic skill of archery, wake up at 5am to scale majestic sand dunes for a mystical sunrise experience, get the adrenaline pumping with a ‘dune bashing’ ride, get in the traditional hamman at the Spa and discover the ancient traditional sport of falconry and hunting with Salukis which has been practiced for thousands of years in the UAE. https://qasralsarab.anantara.com

vaneta_zoubi

Vaneta Al-Zoubi Meet the self-confessed multi-tasker whose hobbies became her career. Vaneta Al-Zoubi has always been ambitious but did she really envisage having five different careers? Find out what inspired this determined young woman and how she turned her dreams into reality.

Hi, please introduce yourself to our readers: My name is Vaneta Al-Zoubi. I'm a multi-task person. I can be a TV presenter, actress, fitness trainer, MC and art teacher all in one ambitious person!

Tell us about your education: Colours always attract me. I inherited this from my father so I entered this field with passion. I was raised in my father's workshop from 5 years old and I grew up in the hands of my idol (my father) along with Iraqi and Jordanian artists who made me become the person I am today.

What inspired you to study fine arts? The world is a big canvas. I always look at things in a different way that not everyone can understand. The world of colour is a different world – it’s a therapy and a joy. Can you live without colours and lines?

Why did you take art teaching as a career? Art should be inherited and improved. Honestly, after graduating with a fine arts major I thought we could be a generation who would change the wrong idea about art in schools. And it happened, with the help of the IB and MYP systems that gave art a value when it was marginalized. I’m happy to be part of this change and grateful that kids these days understand how important art is.

How would you describe your style of art? Art for me is a reflection of my mood, my life, an incident, or a story. You can't express them all in one media or one art school ‘movement’, but mainly I find my passion in abstract art and fauvism art, plus contemporary and modern style. 48

DECEMBER 2017

You mentioned you are also a fitness trainer. Can you elaborate? My journey in fitness started when I went through an illness and I gained so much weight. I was on medication for a long period of time, so I decided to enter the world of fitness. I searched a lot about health, muscles, workouts and fitness models. I watched my trainers for years and learned almost everything. I’m still learning but I reached a point when I knew what was wrong and what was right. I also established a lot of relations with fitness trainers and now I do it for fun. I do Pilates, ‘hips & abs’ and I really enjoy watching the transformation the girls I train go through. It makes me feel so proud and happy.

How did you get into modeling? It was a dream. I was attracted to cat walk shows and I simply signed up with one of the best modeling agencies here in Jordan. I did it for fun. I said ‘Why not make this dream come true?’

What were some of your favourite shoots? My favourite was a project called ‘black & lite’ for a local/ Armenian photographer. It showed a lot of my personality.

How did you get into the Youtube channel sabayatube and how was the experience? It all started when I met the director of sabayatube. We shared our ideas. The chemistry clicked and we took it from there. It was a difficult experience to gather all the ideas in short videos to send our message to the target audience.

www.cpmagazine.net

49

And how did the transition from Youtube to TV channels happen? Afterwards, I got a call to do a casting for a TV show and that was my opportunity to enter the media world. They liked my charisma and I was assigned for the part. It took me away from my YouTube channel but I can't deny that I enjoy it and until now I'm doing morning shows.

What are some of your hobbies? I reached a point where my hobbies became a career and a lifestyle. When I have extra time I like to go camping and hiking. I love travelling.

How would you describe your fashion style? I follow up with fashion and I spend a lot on clothes since I am on TV, although I usually prefer wearing basics and comfortable outfits. I think if a girl wears what suits her body shape it is better than following up with fashion since not everything suits everyone.

What is your favourite city and where do you like to hang out there? Since I have Spanish roots from my mom's side, I find myself in Barcelona. This simple city with old buildings and a modern lifestyle gives me so much satisfaction . Walking through the allies in the center of this beautiful city you find my favourite place ‘Ziryab’. It’s a small, cozy place where Catalan and Arab cuisines meet. If you visit Barcelona you have to check it out!

Your favourite cuisine? Oh, this is so hard to answer! It depends on my mood. I love food in general so you might find me having the famous Jordanian dish ‘mansaf’ today and later find me in a Japanese restaurant having sushi.

What’s your favourite book/film/music? I am a big fan of horror and action movies, I enjoy all

types of music especially oldies. My favourite book is ‘The Forty Rules of Love’ by Elif Safak.

What do you do to stay in shape? The secret is a combination of a few simple things that keeps me, and anyone else, in shape. I stay away from junk food, eat balanced meals, workout or do any kind of sports and drink enough water. I also try to skip dinner meals.

What are your favourite hang out spots in the city you live in? Recently, at the weekend my favourite place is ‘Bonsai’ restaurant lounge. It has good music, delicious food and a cozy atmosphere. On week days I usually enjoy staying home with my pets or having my friends over to watch a movie or a series after a long working day.

What has been your proudest moment so far? I am proud that I jumped and risked to become who I am today.

What are your plans and dreams for the future? To have my own show. I’m also looking forward to being the main character in a film after being part of a Jordanian series in Ramadan ‘Alhob Alhob’.

Your message for us at CP magazine: I would like to take this opportunity to thank the team for this interview and of course a big thanks to the readers who took the time reading this article. Best of luck completing another year of amazing articles and great work. 50

silvialagoshoes

Silvia Lago A step ahead when it comes to shoe design.

Silvia Lago has put her heart and soul into creating the perfect shoe. The founder and creative director of Silvia Lago believes that women should #ReachHigher in comfort as well as style.

Please introduce yourself to our readers: My name is Silvia Lago and I am the Creative Director and founder of Barcelona’s first innovative luxury footwear brand. We combine the knowledge of biomechanical science with footwear expertise and luxurious craftsmanship to offer high heel shoes that are beautiful, sophisticated and comfortable to wear all day long.

Tell us about your education: I have a background in Business Management and Economics. I received my degree from Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona but spent several months studying abroad in London, New York and Philadelphia. I have always been very curious and I love to travel. I believe travelling and learning new cultures is a key aspect of our learning process and development.

How and when did you develop your interest with shoes? I have loved shoes since a very tender age. Like many other girls, I learned to walk in heels by trying my mother’s shoes when she wasn’t at home. I soon developed a taste and admiration for beautiful, elegant and well-made high heel shoes and couldn’t wait to wear my own when I was a teenager.

Tell us your story. What lead to the launch of your own shoe brand? Silvia Lago was born out of a personal need. I couldn't find shoes that were both stylish and comfortable to wear all 54

DECEMBER 2017

day in the office. I had to choose between sophisticated but uncomfortable stilettos or more wearable but less stylish high heels. I moved to Alicante in Spain, one of the world's regions of luxury shoemaking, to learn the art of shoemaking and start a new shoe line that offered both elegance and wearability. With the help and advice of a team of shoe experts, podiatrists, last artisans and biomechanical experts, we developed the first high heel shoes that improve comfort without sacrificing a sophisticated look. Our shoes feature a reinforced structure, cushioned insoles with high performing materials, anti-bacterial leather linings, stable heels with shock-absorbing heel caps, etc.

When was the brand officially launched? The brand was officially launched in 2014, when we presented our initial shoe technology in Barcelona. With the experience of that first collection, we refined and improved our shoe technology to make it more comfortable and with an improved shoe integration.

What were some of the challenges you faced during the early stages of launching your brand? Our high heel shoes and our comfort technology has been the result of more than three years of extensive research. It hasn’t been an easy task to fuse our shoe technology and innovative comfort features with the best luxurious craftsmanship. However, it’s in the brand’s DNA to continue innovating and improving the comfort of our shoes. We think about the research and development process as an ongoing one.

DECEMBER 2017

What do you feel you bring to shoe design that sets you apart from your contemporaries? What are the key benefits of Silvia Lago shoes? Our brand was born with the idea of creating the first luxury shoe brand to blend both style and comfort. There is a need for wearable luxury high heels, but the traditional brands are not providing any solution. We are using the knowledge of biomechanical science to improve the comfort of high heel shoes. First, your weight is evenly distributed throughout the shoe and you stand stable and supported. As you walk, the shoe mitigates the impulsive load from your toe and heel-strike. And finally, the shape of the shoe effectively conforms to the shape of your foot as you move. We use a proprietary system, the LagosFit® technology, that features a reinforced structure, high performance cushioned insoles, anti-bacterial leather lining, stable heels with softer heel caps that are shockabsorbing and provide a more silent walk, soft leathers with natural stretch properties, etc.

Is there a particular type of woman that your brand targets? The modern lady who is going places and needs comfortable and stylish shoes to carry her gracefully all day (and night!). Designed for and by women, because we sometimes all need a little help to #ReachHigher and we, smart women, know what we want: effortlessly sophisticated stilettos that feel good! Note the stylish block heels for all day wear and the thin but stable stilettos to enjoy comfortably at evening events.

What is the LagosFit Tech? The LagosFit® is an exclusive comfort technology developed after several years of research advised by a team of footwear experts, biomechanics scientists, podiatrists and last artisans. We have combined the knowledge of biomechanical science with footwear expertise to champion a technology which forces the foot to walk as anatomically correct as possible while providing unparalleled comfort when walking in high heels. Our design and materials measurably improve load distribution, reduce impact shock, and minimize friction, resulting in a healthier and longer-wearing high heel shoe that never compromises on a sophisticated look.

The LagosFit® features a proprietary cushioned insole with high-perfomance materials, a concealed shock absorbing flexible platform, biomechanically engineered and well-balanced construction, Italian luxury soft leather uppers with natural stretch properties, high-performance anti-microbial breathable leather lining, shock absorbing stable ‘silent’ heels and an overall proven comfortable design.

What kind of materials do you use for your shoes? We use a wide variety of materials thinking of beauty, quality and comfort. For the shoe uppers I absolutely love Italian cashmere-like suede, always elegant and sophisticated. I also like the luxury feel of velvet colours and bright glitters. I am a huge fan of shiny Swarovski crystals and embellishments as well! On the inside of the shoe we use a super soft anti-bacterial leather lining to avoid over-heating temperatures and bad smell. Finally, all of our shoes feature a high-performing insole material that molds to your foot to cushion every step and recovers 100% of its shape after each use.

How often do you launch new collections? Due to the nature of our shoes and the time needed to develop its comfort technology, we release new styles periodically but do not follow any specific calendar dates. We love to hear our customers’ opinion and offer styles that better serve their needs and tastes. Being a directto-consumer brand allows us to better adapt to our customers’ demands and serve them better and faster.

Where do you draw your inspiration for your new collections? My inspiration is the modern cosmopolitan woman. A lady who needs to be polished, comfortable and stylish in an effortless way. I always try to blend our comfort features with Spain's luxury craftsmanship to bring wearability and style to the feet of women on the go. I am also very inspired by the timeless elegance and chic style of the 40s and 50s, especially of the old Hollywood divas. Think of the effortless feminine style of Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly.

What major differences do you notice in the Middle Eastern consumer compared to those in the Western world? The Middle Eastern woman loves bright colours and likes to experiment much more with shiny textures and materials. She likes to wear fun shoes in lively colours. Whereas Western women are usually more at ease with classic neutral colours, tones and shapes and they don’t like to dress up as much for the everyday.

4 STEPS TO QUIT JUNK FOOD Jamie & Alana Karehana

J

unk food tastes annoyingly good. There’s a reason for this – the food companies actually formulate each bite for maximum ‘craveability’ with a specialized balance of sugar, fat and salt.

But while junk food might taste good, it’s detrimental to your fat loss results. Wondering what exactly classifies as junk food? You’re in good company, especially these days as many junk foods are being deceptively marketed and packaged as healthy choices. Here’s the rundown on what classifies as junk food: lJunk food has little to zero nutritional value lJunk food is processed and packaged lJunk food is high in sugar, fat and salt lJunk food is high in calories lJunk food is rarely eaten out of hunger lSoda pop, convenience foods, packaged snacks,

treats…

frozen

4 Steps to Quit Junk Food Imagine being 100% free of junk food for the next 30 days. How would your weight improve? How would you feel? How many empty calories would you save yourself from? Now let’s take some action! Step #1: Get Rid of It Step one is simple: get rid of all the junk food that currently resides in your home, office and car. Go through with a big garbage bag and toss anything that remotely resembles junk food. Remember, junk food is stuff that is high in 60

DECEMBER 2017

empty calories. Step #2: Stock Up on the Healthy Stuff Don’t worry, you aren’t going to starve now that your junk food has been cleared out. Step two is where you go to the store and stock up on delicious, nutritious foods that will take the place of the junk food. Nuts, seeds, fruit, veggies, hard boiled eggs, meatballs, and hearty salads or burrito bowls are great items to have on hand. You’ll eat less of these healthy snacks, since these aren’t empty calories, but rather nutrient-filled calories that satiate. Step #3: HALT! When the next craving strikes you, tell yourself to HALT! This word is actually a handy acronym. Ask yourself, ‘Am I Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired?’ If you’re hungry then reach for one of the healthy snacks from step two. If you’re angry, then explore the issue and seek resolution. If you are lonely, then reach out to a friend, instead of reaching for junk food. And if you are tired then make the time to grab a nap or get to bed early to catch up on sleep. Step #4: Stick With It The first day that you go without junk food will be the hardest day. The second day will be a little easier. The third day will be even easier than the second…and so on. The fact is that your taste buds adjust to the foods that you exist on. When your diet is filled with junk foods then that is what your taste buds will crave, but as you shift to a diet that is filled with fresh, nutritious foods then your taste buds will forget all about that old junk food. Stick with it, one day at a time, and you will break free from the grip of junk food addiction.

DRESS TO IMPRESS

THIS FESTIVE SEASON with Carla & Marie

With Christmas comes joy and excitement, parties, dinners and big celebrations. For us, this time of the year means flying back home to Spain and France, spending time with our loved ones, walking the cold streets of Madrid and Paris and having hot chocolate in a cozy cafĂŠ around the city. It is our favourite time of the year, the streets are full of Christmas lights and everyone is in such a festive mood. On the other hand, as stylists, we cannot forget fashion, and we understand it may be a struggle for many people finding what to wear for the festive season. Be ready to absorb some valuable tips on how to dress to impress this Christmas.

70

DECEMBER 2017

SELECT A VERSATILE LOOK Have you ever felt guilty of buying an evening gown for a special occasion that you will only wear once or twice? Well, let’s do things differently this time around. The key is to select a festive look that is versatile and can be worn with other pieces from your existing wardrobe too. If you take a look at the selected look for our model, we have paired a festive skirt with an all time classic blazer and a white silk shirt. We have then added a bow, black stilettos and a glitter clutch. Looking at the individual garments, they can all be combined with other pieces from your wardrobe very easily, to create evening and casual looks, depending on how you mix and match. This is the simplest solution to buying a festive season outfit that you can wear over and over throughout the year.

Credits: Photographer: Arsan Hassan (IG: arsan_photography) Image Consultants: Carla Otero & Marie Auffret (IG: thestylistes) Makeup Artist: Edna Trogen (IG: edna_trogen) Hair Styling: The BlowOut Bar (IG: blowoutbardxb) Model: Kathrine Trillingsgaard Carla & Marie’s Wardrobe: Maje (IG: majeofficiel) Model’s Wardrobe: Maje (IG: majeofficiel) Location: Palm Jumeirah, Dubai

ADD SOME SPARKLE A festive season wouldn't be festive without some sparkle, so we have to apply this concept to our look. Our choice of sparkle has gone directly to an A-line skirt with embedded rose gold sequins and floral motifs. The good thing about this piece is that it flatters most body shapes and it catches wonderful attention during the Christmas season.

www.cpmagazine.net

71

THE CLUTCH A look wouldn't be complete without a clutch, and since it is Christmas, we had to pick a glitter one. We don't recommend adding glitter or sequins to your accessories if your outfit already has too much of that material. In our case, only the skirt has touches of shine, so we can go wild with our clutch.

DETAILS We always say that a look becomes extra stylish thanks to the details. Look at our model's bow, it has small silver balls that resemble Christmas tree decorations. Doesn't this little detail transform a simple shirt and blazer into a stylish and festive one?

STILETTOS Black stilettos are an all time classic. Either in leather or suede, they can be worn for special occasions or with jeans for a more casual look. A pair of back stilettos is an investment, so be sure yours are comfortable and of good quality, as you will wear them over and over. In terms of style, by keeping the heels simple and elegant, the attention focuses on other parts of the look, like the skirt, the bow or the clutch. In fashion, it’s all about balance! 72

DECEMBER 2017

GLAM MAKEUP Makeup is as important as the outfit itself. Let’s have a look at our model’s makeup. When we saw Kathrine, we instantly knew the focus should be on her gorgeous eyes and as a rule of thumb, if eye makeup is heavy then lips should be light, and viceversa. Edna, CP Magazine's beauty editor and professional makeup artist, has done a stunning job in achieving this festive makeup look, with smokey eyes in shades of shimmery grey and nude lips with a touch of gloss.

HAIR STYLING Last but not least is the hair styling. We headed straight to ‘The BlowOut Bar’ in Palm Jumeirah, Dubai, since they specialise in trendy hair styling and braids. Firstly, they washed and blow dried our model’s hair, followed by beach waves (their signature hair style). To complete the look, a natural hairdo and a creative side braid did the trick. And viola, our model is ready to welcome the festive season.

We want to take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. And remember for the festive season, dress to impress!

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS....... IS A SMOKEY LOOK Kathrine’s Christmas Makeup can be done easily with just a few products. The first step is to make sure your skin is cleaned and prepped with your favourite creams and serums.

SKIN Start with a good primer. One of my favourites at the moment is Marc Jacobs Perfecting Coconut Face Primer (1). I used it all over her face while concentrating on the T-zone and over the eyelids, so her eye makeup will last longer. I waited a minute or two and then proceeded with the foundation. I used Luminous Silk Foundation in 4.5 light neutral By Giorgio Armani (2). I applied the foundation with my hands to even out her skin colour (only a very small amount was needed as she is very young and doesn’t need heavy layers). Afterwards, I powdered the T-zone lightly and the eyelids with Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrush Flawless Finish Micro Powder in 2-Medium (3). Then using Yves Saint Laurent’s creamy blush in number 6 - From Prude to Nude (4), I tapped it on the apples of the cheeks directly from the bar and worked it with my fingers. I finished the look with a light contouring using Charlotte Tilbury’s sculpting duo Filmstar Bronze & Glow (5) and the sculpting brush from the same brand, Powder & Sculpt brush from Charlotte Tilbury (6).

EYE MAKEUP I defined her eyes with a black powder pencil all around her upper and lower lash lines and down on the water line using Lancome Khol in Black (7). Then, I applied directly the creamy eyeshadow all over the upper lid using Laura Mercier Caviar stick in Smoke (8), which I quickly blended with the synthetic flat eyeshadow brush from Shu Uemura (10). The creamy eyeshadow texture has to be worked quickly before it dries and this particular Smoke color has glittery particles for a shimmery dark effect. I also painted a thin line just under the lower lash line using Kajal D’Orient Eye liner by Laura Mercier (9) together with MAC eye brush 219 (11) to define and soften the edges under the eyes. I finished the eye makeup with two coats of black mascara from Benefit ‘They’re real’ (12).

78

DECEMBER 2017

For a modern smokey eye look, I like to erase hard edges and smudge and blend around the eyes as much as possible; you can use your fingers or any medium thin soft brush. Use Q-tips too as an alternative and add some individual eyelashes for a more dramatic look. To balance Kathrine’s overall look with her Christmas glittery clothes, I decided to leave her eyebrows and lips undone. I applied Eight Hour lip balm from Elizabeth Arden on her lips and left her eyebrows natural. I brushed them up and kept them in place with a touch of hairspray. You don’t need to cover and paint all features of your face. A beautiful glowing skin and soft smokey eyes can make your look a winner! www.cpmagazine.net

WRITING MOVIE

Justice League

WRONGS moviewrongs.com by: JIM WEST

Directed by Zack Snyder Written by Chris Terrio and Joss Whedon

D

C really wants to catch up to the Marvel Universe and tries so hard in this film that it reeks of desperation. Too much is thrown at the screen with little time to breathe or savour any of the moments. Quite frankly, it suffers badly as a result. I am still hopeful there is more to come, but to the folks controlling the future of the DC universe for film…read below carefully!

Here come the spoilers! The film opens essentially right after the last debacle of Batman V. Superman left us reeling from the death of Superman. Yet it doesn’t take long for them to revive him and remind us how handsome Henry Cavill is. The cast of Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Cyborg (Ray Fisher), Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and Batman (Ben Affleck) are quickly assembled with only the Flash quickly joining the team (as he could use some friends). Ezra Miller is perhaps the best of the group and the portrayal is honestly what keeps this film moving along with the most human element as the rest are just there for some action scenes. Wonder Woman comes into battle with her wonder hair that never gets messy - must be a Wonder Woman superpower that the likes of Paul Mitchel wish they could clone! Batman becomes so desperate to revive Superman that it is just disheartening. As for the villain, Steppenwolf is forgettable and just a cookie cutter ‘want to take over the world’ generic villain. DC, take this note down very seriously: THE STORY IS ONLY AS GREAT AS THE VILLIAN. Period. The enemies and plot can be directly paralleled to the Avengers 80

DECEMBER 2017

movie, and that just shows the level of desperation here. DC, take a risk and allow a villain to last more than one film. Let the heroes lose! That would be a shock and innovative approach to your universe that Marvel, to this day, has NOT done. Let’s explore what it does for Justice League by taking out the two parts that ruin this film: First you do not resurrect Superman in THIS film, but rather delay that to the obvious sequel. Build tension with the team not quite working well together… yet. Let them get beaten by a villain’s powers not just his height (too many remarks about how big he is). Steppenwolf should have more back story inserted to reveal his reasons and what drives him to conquer. Without this motivation you cannot really feel anything in regard to him. He clearly isn’t scary at all to look at so you need to highlight motivations. Show this team has a long way to go before they can truly unite and fight against a super villain from another dimension. This film should have been split into two parts. The first part is them trying to prevent the capture of the boxes. The film ends with them barely keeping the last box away from Steppenwolf and that would setup the resurrection of Superman in the sequel. You get to devote more screen time to the team and build upon their characters more to endear them to the viewers. By losing the final film’s battle with Steppenwolf and barely getting the last box away you then setup why Batman is desperate to resurrect Superman at all costs. That would make those moments better in a sequel rather than just crammed in this film as they sloppily did. As a fan of both DC and Marvel characters I say this to both studios: MAKE VILLAINS GREAT AGAIN! Thanks for reading Writing Movie ‘WRONGS’.

FarahMKamal

‘I’m a girl who loves to dream’

Farah Kamal is a girl of many talents and when it comes to the arts, she pretty much has them covered. As a dancer, artist and author, she certainly knows how to express herself and how to bring her imagination to life. Please introduce yourself to our readers: My name is Farah Kamal. I am a 23 year old Kuwaiti girl, a ballerina dancer, an abstract artist that uses fire in her work, a professional special effect makeup artist, an author and I also have a business selling paintings.

Tell us about your education. I graduated from Kuwait University in 2015.

Can you share your publishing journey from first draft to book shelf? Originally, I wrote the ideas in one month. Then I wrote the full book in only three months. After that I took the book to the Publishing House and they agreed to take it as a new idea. They asked me to sign a contract so they could release the book on the first day of the International Book Fair. Finally it happened and they liked it!

DECEMBER 2017

choose to create her own place and where lots of things will happen to her. We listen to the voice of our hero through the book chapters.

Was there anything in particular that inspired you to write this book? Of course! Every author needs an inspiration; a strong one to create the idea that you can make into a book. I'm a girl who loves to dream and I love to imagine a lot. I was thinking one day that I could use my imagination as a message through this book, and I did!

What kind of research did you have to do for the book? I did my research on how to write a novel for the first time and the most important steps that I should follow. I've learned how to enter the words in my drawings to make the book more exciting.

Tell us about your book ‘The Imagination Believers’. What is the subject?

What are the main challenges you have found in your creative writing process?

It’s about a girl who wants to create her own world; to have a world of her own creation in her mind far away from the reality that hurts her so much; where she can

The main challenge was how to attract readers and how to deliver the whole idea in my mind to the people that will hold my book in their hands.

What did you learn from writing this book? I've learned that writing a book isn't as hard as people think. I've also learned how to turn my ideas and thoughts into a book.

Do you have writing rituals like a particular location, a necessary hat, a specific time of day etc? Sure. I like to write in the middle of the night in my office and I love to listen to special songs from special singers such as Drake, Coldplay and especially 80s and 90s songs.

What surrounds you when you work? Lavender scented candles and music.

Sum up your book in tweetable length. Mmm, let's say: a girl's adventures with her own imagination. If you had to choose, which writer would you consider as a mentor? Dan Brown.

You are also a ballerina dancer, an artist and a professional special effect makeup artist. Can you tell us a little about each and how it happened? I started ballet when I was twelve years old. I found myself attracted to ballerinas and their moves when I was a kid so I learned how to be a ballerina dancer. I hated art at the start but in 2015 I started to draw simple drawings. After that I challenged myself to enter an art exhibition for the first time. A year later I learned a new style in art where I could use fire in my drawings. Some of my paintings have been featured in a luxury hotel in Dubai. I’m obsessed with special effect makeup! I couldn't resist learning how they do this kind of art in horror movies. After watching some videos I learned how to do it. A theatre here in Kuwait wanted me to work with them but I couldn't because I was busy with my art and my work.

What are some of your all time favourite books? Inferno by Dante Alighieri, Perfume by Patrick Suskind, Dan Brown novels and anatomy books.

What are you reading right now? Origin by Dan Brown.

What is next for you? To write another book (which will be totally different). Also, a new business is on the way!

What’s your best advice for another aspiring author? Learn more about how to start your first book. Clean your mind, arrange your ideas, have strong self-confidence and show your writing to the people. Choose your words wisely and take the challenge to start your first book.

Your message for us at CP magazine: Thank you so much for doing this lovely interview with me. I’m so honored to be part of your magazine. To all the readers: don't stop! You have to choose your dreams no matter how hard they are. Don't listen to everyone just believe in yourself and in your talent. You have a gift and you have to take the chance to show it to the people that respect your talent. In the end you will achieve your dream goals. 84

THE FOUR: THE HIDDEN DNA OF AMAZON, APPLE, FACEBOOK, AND GOOGLE by Scott Galloway

by Antonio R. Damasio

Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google are the four most influential companies on the planet. Just about everyone thinks they know how they got there. Just about everyone is wrong. For all that's been written about the Four over the last two decades, no one has captured their power and staggering success as insightfully as Scott Galloway. Instead of buying the myths these companies broadcast, Galloway asks fundamental questions. How did the Four infiltrate our lives so completely that they're almost impossible to avoid (or boycott)? Why does the stock market forgive them for sins that would destroy other firms? And as they race to become the world's first trillion-dollar company, can anyone chal-lenge them?

The Strange Order of Things is a pathbreaking investigation into homeostasis, the condition of regulating life within the range that makes possible not only the survival but also the flourishing of life. Antonio Damasio makes clear that we descend biologically, psychologically, and even socially from a long lineage that begins with single living cells; that our minds and cultures are linked by an invisible thread to the ways and means of ancient unicellular life and other life-forms; and that inherent in the very chemistry of life is a powerful force, a striving toward life maintenance that governs life in all its guises, including the development of genes that help regulate and transmit life. The Strange Order of Things offers us a new way of understanding the world and our place in it.

TO BE SOUL, DO SOUL: ADVENTURES IN CREATIVE CONSCIOUSNESS

THE REVOLUTION OF MARINA M.

by Hiro Boga

St. Petersburg, New Year's Eve, 1916. Marina Makarova is a young woman of privilege who aches to break free of the constraints of her genteel life, a life about to be violently upended by the vast forces of history. Swept up on these tides, Marina will join the marches for workers' rights, fall in love with a radical young poet, and betray everything she holds dear, before being betrayed in turn. As her country goes through almost unimaginable upheaval, Marina's own coming-of-age unfolds, marked by deep passion and devastating loss, and the private heroism of an ordinary woman living through extraordinary times. This is the epic, mesmerizing story of one indomitable woman's journey through some of the most dramatic events of the last century.

"You are an incarnate, embodied soul," acclaimed writer, mentor and mystic Hiro Boga assures us. "You don't have to do anything to be soul - soul is who you are," Yet how often, in the course of an ordinary day, do you experience the depth, beauty, power, and radiance of your soul? If you want to strengthen your soul connection, do as soul does. Let your being inform your doing. To Be Soul, Do Soul offers a collection of unique mini-experiments in creative consciousness. Play with them to develop the capacities and powers of your soul, and create a soul-infused relationship with your world.

THE STRANGE ORDER OF THINGS: LIFE, FEELING, AND THE MAKING OF CULTURES

by Janet Fitch

THINGS ARE WHAT YOU MAKE OF THEM: LIFE ADVICE FOR

THE POWER OF MOMENTS: WHY CERTAIN EXPERIENCES

CREATIVES by Adam J. Kurtz

HAVE EXTRAORDINARY IMPACT by Chip Heath, Dan Heath

From the creative mind and heart of Adam J. Kurtz comes this quirky, upbeat rallying cry for creators of all stripes. Expanding on a series of popular guides he's created for Design*Sponge, this handwritten and heartfelt little book shares wisdom and empathy from one working artist to others. The advice is organized by topic, including: (How to) Get Over Comparing Yourself to Other Creatives Seeking & Accepting Help from Others How to Get Over Common Creative Fears (Maybe) How to Be Happy (or Just Happier) As wry and cheeky as it is empathic and empowering, this deceptively simple, vibrantly full-color book will be a touchstone for writers, illustrators, designers, and anyone else who wants to be more creative even when it would be easier to give up act normal.

The New York Times bestselling authors of Switch and Made to Stick explore why certain brief experiences can jolt us and elevate us and change us—and how we can learn to create such extraordinary moments in our life and work. While human lives are endlessly variable, our most memorable positive moments are dominated by four elements: elevation, insight, pride, and connection. If we embrace these elements, we can conjure more moments that matter. What if a teacher could design a lesson that he knew his students would remember twenty years later? What if a manager knew how to create an experience that would delight customers? What if you had a better sense of how to create memories that matter for your children?

THE DANGEROUS CASE OF DONALD TRUMP: 27

FRIENDS DIVIDED: JOHN ADAMS AND THOMAS JEFFERSON

PSYCHIATRISTS AND MENTAL HEALTH EXPERTS ASSESS A PRESIDENT by Bandy X. Lee

by Gordon S. Wood

This is not normal. Since the start of Donald Trump's presidential run, one question has quietly but urgently permeated the observations of concerned citizens: What is wrong with him? Constrained by the American Psychiatric Association's "Goldwater rule," which inhibits mental health professionals from diagnosing public figures they have not personally examined, many of those qualified to answer this question have shied away from discussing the issue at all. The public has thus been left to wonder whether he is mad, bad, or both. In The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump, twenty-seven psychiatrists, psychologists, and other mental health experts argue that, in Mr. Trump's case, their moral and civic "duty to warn" America supersedes professional neutrality. They then explore Trump's symptoms and potentially relevant diagnoses to find a complex, if also dangerously mad, man.

Thomas Jefferson and John Adams could scarcely have come from more different worlds, or been more different in temperament. Jefferson, the optimist with enough faith in the innate goodness of his fellow man to be democracy's champion, was an aristocratic Southern slaveowner, while Adams, the overachiever from New England's rising middling classes, painfully aware he was no aristocrat, was a skeptic about popular rule and a defender of a more elitist view of government. They worked closely in the crucible of revolution, crafting the Declaration of Independence and leading, with Franklin, the diplomatic effort that brought France into the fight. But ultimately, their profound differences would lead to a fundamental crisis, in their friendship and in the nation writ large, as they became the figureheads of two entirely new forces, the first American political parties. It was a bitter breach, lasting through the presidential administrations of both men, and beyond.

GoBag 2

SteelSeries Arctis 3 Bluetooth headset

The euphoric highs of knowing you're off on a short weekend break are swiftly crushed when the thought of packing all your shirts, pants and socks in a carry-on sized bag kicks in. Rather than uncomfortably jamming everything in, the GoBag 2 solution is to pack it all in a special vacuum-compression bag, so you can suck out all of that pointless, space-hogging air that collects around your undies. Once you've squished out all the air you'll have plenty of space left over for the integrated wash bag and 15-inch laptop pocket - you might even be able to bring a souvenir home!

We love the fact we can play Zelda on the way to work with the Nintendo Switch, but we're less enthusiastic about the lack of Bluetooth headset support. If only there were a way to play and use our commute time to speak to mum... Fortunately gaming accessory specialists have released the Arctis 3 Bluetooth headset, which as well as having ultra-low distortion sound, class-leading microphone audio and a ski goggle headband for comfort, can play Bluetooth and wired sound simultaneously! No excuses for not making that call anymore...

LG K7i mosquito repelling phone Unihertz Jelly Want a cheap and lightweight phone to take on your travels in place of your smartphone? The tiny, slimline Jelly runs on Android 7.0 Nougat, and packs in 4G reception, up to 2GB of RAM, a 2.45-inch screen, dual cameras, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS.

DECEMBER 2017

One thing we've always felt missing on our modern smartphones are mosquitorepelling cases. Praise be that LG have heard our prayers and furnished us with the K7i. It's only available in India, where disease-carrying mosquitoes are actually a problem, and the science behind it is dubious at best, but hey, LG are thinking outside the box when it comes to new smartphone features...

Vespa Elettrica electric scooter Buzzfeed Tasty One Top Buzzfeed’s first foray into hardware is a Bluetooth-enabled hotplate that links to their Tasty app, enabling even those who’ve been known to burn a tin of beans to cook over 1,700 dishes to perfection. Perfect for students heading off to uni!

HTC Vive Focus There is little that we can say about the HTC Vive Focus, other than it exists, but then a wirefree VR headset from the people that give us the excellent Vive is always welcome. It's going to be available in China, and there is no indication of cost or even specs other than having a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chip, an AMOLED screen and uses inside-out positional tracking. Sadly HTC have abandoned all hopes of having a Daydream branded headset, raising the pressure on the Focus to be a success. On a personal level, we're already fans of the name...

Mamma Mia, now that's a nice scooter! It's taken a while for the iconic Vespa to join the electric revolution but now it's here we're giddy about getting on this one. With a peak power of 4kW, the new electric Vespa should easily out perform your gas-guzzling 50cc and can get 100km on a four-hour charge. Should you want to go further the hybrid Elettrica X can take you a full 200km before running out of puff.

Nuki Smart Lock Smart home gadgets can live or die by their simplicity to set up and their effectiveness. You would hope that the Nuki smart lock is suitably effective at keeping your house locked when you're not there, but its setup is one of the easiest we've seen yet - you simply mount it over your existing key, tighten a few bolts and you're good to go (quite literally). Once you've installed the battery-powered lock (lasts about six months) and downloaded the app, it'll automatically detect when you're home or away and unlock accordingly, as well as connecting to Alexa or Google Assistant for completely hands free interaction. If you buy the Nuki Bridge you can unlock the door via the internet.

Amplifi HD WiFi Router It wasn't that long ago that we were running cables around our house if we wanted to be hooked up to that there high-speed internet, but thankfully wi-fi has sorted out the problem of potential trip hazards. But along with it comes another, potentially even more perilous concern - wi-fi dead spots. Ok, it might not be as serious as a sprained ankle but the thought of buffering during Star Trek Discovery is enough to make any of us throw our laptop out the window. This AmpliFi's router pumps out a 802.11ac signal at speeds up to 867 Mbps, almost as fast as the zippiest of ethernet cables, and paired with the AmpliFi Extenders means no corner of the house should be spared from the battle between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. It also has an LCD screen to show you the strength of the signal - and the time, which is nice.

Qoobo Pillow Cat and dogs are lovely, aren't they - but they do cost a bit, and they need walks, and smell. Wouldn't it be so much easier if you could get all the love and attention, comfort and warmth from something that didn't demand scooping unidentifiable meat from a tin to make them happy? The Qoobo pillow is a bizarre invention from Japan, which has a robotic tail that responds to your strokes like a pet would - perfect for healing your heart and relieving stress apparently. That is, we guess, unless you accidentally sit on it and fear you may have squished poor Tinkles the kitten. www.cpmagazine.net

Tissot Femini-T It’s time to be inspired

The Longines Symphonette adorns itself with pink in a resolutely modern version Launched in 2015, the Longines Symphonette was imagined as a contemporary interpretation of the elegance dear to the Swiss watchmaking brand. The unique oval line of the cases, the sophisticated meshing of the bracelets, the refined dials of the various models are like as many notes combining in perfect harmony. Today, Longines is introducing new models blending rose gold and steel that enrich the collection. From the beginning, Longines has been in tune with its female customers’ desires. In the tradition of the winged hourglass brand’s rich watchmaking history, which saw the emergence of many mythical models worn by elegant women through the ages, the Longines Symphonette is the ideal adornment of women whose life is conceived as a never-ending representation. Resolutely contemporary, these creations will enthrall all those who love a chic and trendy aesthetic, while remaining faithful to the elegance that characterizes the brand with the winged hourglass. Today, Longines is introducing new variations using rose gold and steel that remain as modern and bold as ever. The solid rose gold crown and touches of pink on the dial harmoniously match the bracelet that intertwines steel and a rose gold cap. The brightness of the steel, gold and diamonds enhances the refinement of the dials, while the finely wrought bracelets add the overall final touch. Available in two sizes, the steel and diamond-set steel oval cases of the Longines Symphonette house a quartz movement. A silver-coloured “flinqué” dial adorned with Roman numerals, a white mother-of-pearl dial enhanced with diamond indexes or a white inlaid mother-of-pearl dial with Arab numerals, all decorated with a rose gold hourglass, adorn the models in this line. These pieces are mounted on steel bracelets and rose gold cap featuring sophisticated meshing.

Inspiration Since its foundation, Tissot has created ladies’ watches. The Tissot Femini-T is inspired by one of its gold women’s models that dates back to the sixties. This re-edition stays true to the original watch with its distinctive cushion-shaped case design, which is echoed in the indices set with Top Wesselton diamonds. This gives the piece a true jewellery allure. Adding to the bracelet feel, is a beautiful pendant, composed of a chain and gorgeous natural water pearl, that can be found on the diamond-shaped lugs of certain models. This was a feature of the original watch’s case design.

Character The Tissot Femini-T stands out with class thanks to its originality. The collection offers multiple versions from a steel or rose gold PVD coated case matched with either a crème, black or red leather bracelet, all the way to all steel bangle versions with Top Wesselton Diamonds around the dials. It’s time to let your personality express itself through the Tissot Femini-T.

Les Parisiennes Versailles Les Parisiennes collection embodies the charm of the cultural capital and the cosmopolitan soul of Paris. Montmartre, Palais Royal, Jardin du Luxembourg, Champs Elysées, Versailles…Korloff got his inspiration from iconic Parisian places offering urban chic or elegant style to get out of the ordinary. Inspired by Louis XIV, who transformed the Palace of Versailles into a symbol of absolute power but also of arts and culture. With a steel case and a dial in mother-of-pearl, this elegant watch catches the eye by its extremely slim design. The various interpretations of the dial illustrate the brilliance of the sun, a delicate reference to the nickname given to Louis XIV, “the Sun King”. Depending on versions, the dial presents a Fleur-de-lis guilloche or a center paved with white diamonds which sublimes and illuminates your wrist. As a final touch, a royal blue sapphire is set onto the crown. Versailles collection is designed for women who like astute refinement and discreet luxury.

Jardin du Luxembourg Collection Les Parisiennes Champs Elysées Champs Elysées Collection is a tribute to “the world’s most beautiful avenue”. Les Champs Elysées Avenue is known for its theatres, luxury stores and cafés but also for the thousand lights that illuminate the avenue for the year-end holiday season. The dial is made of Aventurine and Mother-ofpearl, with one common theme: the light. Fireworks, streetlights and constellation are drawn on the dial to represent the magic of Les Champs Elysées by night. Like myriad precious stars, the diamonds and impressions form a beautiful graphic composition with the mother-of-pearl or aventurine dials.

In 1612 a royal garden emerged upon request of Marie de Medicis to decorate the Luxembourg Palace. Thanks to the vibrant works of the Renaissance, the garden bursts into colors. Such is the inspiration of the Jardin du Luxembourg Collection with each hand crafted dial shaped after its fl owers and set with rich natural colored diamonds refl ecting the changing seasons. Take a walk through the garden and escape from the ordinary. The “Jardin du Luxembourg” watches collection comprehends 4 editions corresponding to each season: lSpring is represented by exquisite pink tones remembering delicate colours of newly fresh flowers. lSummer shines with sunny bright natural yellow diamonds and deep blue sea sapphires lAutumn is symbolized by natural colour orange, brown and yellow diamonds as per colourful trees leaves. lPure white diamonds set on Jasmin flowers will represent winter with a light and white snow. Natural pink diamonds in the center of the flowers add to the preciousness of the timepiece. www.cpmagazine.net

Centrepoint’s Autumn/ Winter ’17 Collection has you covered for every occasion Glashutte Original and Behbehani Group celebrate German Originality & Excellence

Looking back on excellent evening in Salhia Complex KidZania Celebrating four years of successful partnership with Kuwait’s Educational Sector

Calvin Klein steadfast

Centrepoint, the Middle East’s largest fashion retailer, has launched its Autumn/Winter ’17 collection – with hundreds of fresh new clothing and lifestyle accessories to give everyone’s wardrobe their most fashionable revamp of the year.

KidZania, Kuwait’s kid-sized metropolis, has celebrated another year of successful partnership with Kuwait’s educational sector at its annual celebratory event. The event highlighted the key role that KidZania’s educational partners, both public and private sector, played in its success as a preferred educational destination for schools. The event was attended by prominent figures from across the Ministry of Education in Kuwait, including former head of social activities, Mona Al Fraih; M.H. Alshaya Co. director Saud Alshaya; and KidZania’s management team. During her speech, Ms Al Fraih praised KidZania’s contribution in supporting children’s education by providing a platform that integrates learning with interactive and fun entertainment. Fernando Medroa, Vice President of Leisure and Entertainment at M.H. As a tribute to its long watchmaking tradition, the Swiss brand Longines loves to reissue some of the iconic pieces that have enhanced its profile throughout its existence. This 1918 model draws its inspiration from the rich history of the brand with the winged hourglass and echoes the first bracelet-chronographs created by Longines. As with the latter, this timepiece features a dial also found on pocket watches from this period, but with Arabic numerals instead of the European ones found in the original model. Its vintage aesthetic and refined fabrication will entice admirers of fine watchmaking. Blued steel and honey-coloured varnish impart character to hands that stand out on a whitelacquered polished dial, which mark the hours and minutes on this reissued model. The small second hand at 6 o’clock adds dimension and contrast to the dial with its Longines’ blue colour. The honey colour can also be found on the large Arabic numerals painted on the dial, providing this emblematic early 20th century timepiece with a remarkably successful balance. This refined model is limited to 185 pieces and each model is numbered on the caseback. Measuring 41 mm, it houses an L615 automatic winding mechanical calibre. To complete the set, a honey-coloured alligator strap echoes the dominant colour of the dial harmoniously. www.cpmagazine.net

Al Zayani launches the Ferrari Portofino: the GT that represents a unique combination of sportiness, elegance and on board comfort

Montblanc Great Characters The Beatles Edition: A Tribute To The Incomparable Talent of The Fab Four

Al Zayani Kuwait, the official Ferrari dealer in Kuwait, unveiled the all-new Ferrari Portofino at a breath-taking ceremony by the Marina Crescent. The Ferrari Portofino is the new V8 GT set to dominate its segment thanks to a perfect combination of outright performance and versatility in addition to a level of driving pleasure and on-board comfort unparalleled on the market. Capable of unleashing a massive 600 cv and sprinting from 0 to 200 km/h in just 10.8 seconds, the Ferrari Portofino is the most powerful convertible to combine the advantages of a retractable hard top, a roomy boot and generous cockpit space complete with two rear seats suitable for short trips. The new car, which takes its name, Portofino, from one of the most charming villages on the Italian Riviera, an eponym for stylish elegance, is the most versatile model in the range. A Ferrari designed to be driven every day that also effortlessly converts from an authentic ‘berlinetta’ coupé to a drop-top capable of delivering a unique Ferrari soundtrack and superb driving pleasure even in day-to-day situations. The Ferrari Portofino’s all-new chassis features a significant weight saving over the California T it replaces. Thanks to the extensive use of modern production technologies, all the chassis and body-in-white components have been redesigned with a consequent reduction in weight despite an increase in torsional rigidity. The renowned Ferrari V8 turbo, part of the engine family that was nominated International Engine of the Year in both 2016 and 2017, now punches out 40 cv more than the California T’s power unit thanks to the adoption of new components and specific calibration of the engine management software. The characteristic Ferrari V8 soundtrack has also been further enhanced and can be fully appreciated, particularly in topdown driving. All aspects of the 8-cylinder’s efficiency have been honed with the adoption of new pistons

and con-rods, and a new intake system design. The geometries throughout the exhaust system have also been revolutionised. The new one-piece-cast exhaust header reduces losses, an important factor in ensuring Ferrari’s characteristic throttle response with zero turbo lag. These improvements, combined with the Variable Boost Management which adjusts torque delivery to suit the gear selected, enable the Ferrari Portofino to offer even higher levels of acceleration in all gears and lower fuel consumption compared to the outgoing model. The Ferrari Portofino’s vehicle dynamic characteristics have been completely revised and benefit from the introduction of new technological solutions. For the first time on this type of Ferrari model, the third generation electronic rear differential (E-Diff3) has been adopted and integrated with the F1-Trac, improving both mechanical grip and the control of the car on the limit. The Ferrari Portofino is also the first GT in the range to be fitted with EPS (Electric Power Steering). This allowed the engineers to reduce the steering ratio by seven per cent for even more responsive steering without a trade-off in stability thanks to the integration with the E-Diff3. The magnetorheological damping system (SCM-E) has been uprated with dualcoil technology which helps reduce roll while simultaneously improving absorption of road surface unevenness. The result is an even more dynamic, responsive car that also delivers superior ride comfort. The Ferrari Design Centre-penned Ferrari Portofino is an aggressively-styled car with a two-box fastback configuration – unprecedented in a coupé-convertible with a retractable hard top - that adds extra sleekness to its silhouette, lending it a sportier character without impinging on its elegance and dynamism.

From cultural icons to great thinkers and leaders, the Montblanc Great Characters Limited Edition has been paying homage since 2009 to the exceptional individuals whose lives and work have made a lasting impact on human civilization. With its latest addition to the collection, Montblanc puts a spotlight on the ground-breaking work and cultural influence of one of the most famous music acts of all time, The Beatles. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr formed their band in Liverpool, England and became widely regarded as one of the foremost and most influential acts of the rock era. With boundless creativity and a bold sense of innovation, the Beatles brought a new vision of music, disrupting the status quo and enchanting audiences around the world with music that ranged from rock and roll, to pop ballads and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock. Beyond constantly reinventing their music, they invented long-form music videos, changed the format of live performances, and came up with new ideas of cover art and fashion. The influence and creativity that still enthrals music lovers over 50 years later has been captured in the design of the new Great Characters Limited Edition. One of the earliest concept albums, “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” is also considered to be one of most important and influential rock and roll albums ever recorded. It is the design inspiration for The Great Characters, The Beatles Special Edition with its bright multicoloured striped cap and barrel. The colours of the stripes from the Special Edition are taken from the uniforms The Beatles wear on the album cover. For the first time, Montblanc has developed a multi-colour stripe lacquering process that involves more than 10 different steps from treating the base metal before meticulously lacquering the five colours onto the metal tube in perfectly equal stripes before applying a transparent lacquer. In homage to their many recordings at the legendary Abbey Road studios, the shape of the cap top evokes a microphone and the cone resembles the button on the mixing table from the recording studio. The clip features four moustaches, a reference to the moustaches each Beatle wore in some of their most famous portraits. The Au750 solid gold nib is ruthenium coated and decorated with a fine engraving.
