I

was at a popular furniture store a while ago, waiting in line at the customer care desk, when a sobbing woman caught my attention. Her husband was shoving her through the crowd, calling her names. Ashamed and distraught, she tripped over her clothes and fell to the ground. A staff member walked up to her husband and asked him not to make a scene in the shop. Furious, the man responded that it was none of his business. So the worker asked that he ‘please take his problem home’. While this exchange took place, I offered to help up the woman and told her that I wanted to help. ‘Please let it go. I’ll be fine, don’t make it worse,’ she said. I’m not sure if it was my own fear or my naivety, but I stepped back. I cannot erase her image from my mind. I did not know this woman, but I saw her pain. I saw it in her eyes and in her nervous smile. And, as she tried to convince me she was alright, I saw her broken spirit. I wish I had insisted. I wish I had been brave enough to be strong for her and for the many women like her. How many times have we witnessed a similar uncomfortable exchange and thought, ‘That’s not my problem’? It was shocking yet common to hear the worker ask the man to ‘take his problem home’ rather than not be the ‘problem’ himself. And you could hear the people around us whisper in hushed tones. ‘I wonder what she said or did to deserve it’. That is where the real issue lies. That people think that a woman could do something to deserve that sort of treatment. That people look for faults in women to justify the violence they face, or blame them for their situation. That we can witness something like that and turn a blind eye and think, ‘that’s not my business’. The violence against women is everyone’s business. So many women who experience violence do not have a voice for many different reasons. It could be financial dependency, fear, a desire to protect their children, or simply that they are so buried into their cycle of abuse that they no longer recognize that it is abuse. They are conditioned to blame themselves and accept the abuse. It is the role of all of us to become the voices of those women who cannot speak for themselves. There are so many different types of violence; physical abuse, emotional and physiological abuse, sexual abuse, financial abuse, threatening, stalking and cyber stalking. All of these forms of abuse are #notok. If you believe you may be a victim of such abuse, you are not alone. You are not doing your children a favour by staying in a marriage that shows them that love is violent, that love is damaging and demeaning. Protect yourself and your children and end the violence. If you stay in an abusive relationship you are teaching your sons that this behavior is acceptable and you’re teaching your daughters that it is okay to be abused. They, in turn, will grow up to either inflict similar behavior on their spouses or accept it from them and the cycle will never end. It can be very tempting to give your abusive spouse excuses such as, ‘he was having a bad day’, ‘he’s stressed’, or ‘I provoked him’. There is no excuse. There is nothing you could do that gives a person the excuse to harm you in this way. You are worthy of respect and safety, especially in your own home. 10

DECEMBER 2018

Violence in all its forms is never a communication of true power or control. It is the struggle from the attacker within himself with his own insecurity and the lack of control to communicate or channel his emotions. All forms of violence and abuse begin with disrespect so make sure you catch the red flags early on. Do not allow anyone to tell you that you are not worthy of respect or dignity. Do not allow anyone to take that away from you. Strong men would not be threatened by strong women. If you feel in any way unsafe in your home or your relationship, re-evaluate your situation. A home should be a place of safety and love. Protecting women begins with all of us. Ask yourself what you can do to protect the women around you from violence. It could be by raising awareness or creating resources. Or it could be by reaching out to abused women and connecting them with the help they need to remove themselves from the abusive situations they are in. If each one of us could do one thing, however small, we can create a ripple effect. The next time you witness violence, do not turn a blind eye. Call it out. Inform the authorities and make sure you stay safe yourself. Break the silence when you witness violence, no matter how uncomfortable it may be. Be part of the solution in ending violence against women and the voice for women everywhere who cannot stand up for themselves. Educate yourself and the women around you on the signs of abuse and remember that abuse is not restricted to uneducated people. People who are highly educated can still inflict abuse and can be victims of abuse in all its forms (you would be surprised). Let’s protect girls and women everywhere, starting with our own communities and make the world a safer place for our daughters.

Elena García Silva Designer, Lautēm Luxury Handbag Label

“I am not asking to change the world, but I would like to prove that is possible to have a sustainable and ethical business.” Elena García Silva is proud of the excellence and dedication that go into creating her Lautēm handbags. But she’s also ethically aware and protective of the environment. Qualities to be applauded in an industry often accused of damaging our planet. 12

Please introduce yourself to our readers.

I am Elena. I design handbags with the humble desire of inspiring confidence. Using volumes, proportions and new shapes I try to convey in each design a strong personality that allows the people carrying them to differentiate from the rest. At the same time, I am also obsessed with quality and excellence.

Tell us about your education.

I graduated in Architecture in Spain.

Where did your love of handbags come from?

I understand fashion as a way of expressing and communicating and I think that a good statement bag can really say a lot about oneself.

What’s your career background?

I worked as an architect on important projects in Spain and Italy for more than 10 years. I have also done a lot of interior and furniture design for private customers.

What materials do you use and where do you source your materials and trims?

We source the leather and the handles mainly from Spain and Italy. The leather is particularly important, because the tannery could be a very polluting industry. The EU restrictions on waste management and use of chemicals give us enough confidence that we are not damaging the environment.

Where do you do research for your collections? Where do you get your inspiration from for the handbags?

Until now, my main inspiration came from Bauhaus and the modernist movement of the last century. I feel very inspired by all the experimentation that was done during those years and I think 100 years on, it can still give us important guidelines.

How would you define the Lautēm brand?

Lautēm come from a Latin adverb that means ‘done with excellence’. The logo we use comes from the E, tilted with the accent, to point to the importance of excellence for us. So Lautēm is about excellence in production and in design.

Who is the target customer for Lautēm?

People looking for something special and different.

What would be your ultimate goal for the brand?

I am not asking to change the world, but I would like to prove that is possible to have a sustainable and ethical business. The best thing for me is receiving emails from happy customers that feel inspired by the bags.

What has been the biggest change in your designs so far?

What is the creative process like for you?

I am learning a lot from the comments of my customers and I am trying to make the bags more practical.

How do you define luxury?

It is difficult to find a typical day. Myself and Roberto we are proud parents of a 4-year-old boy and a 4-year-old brand and we alternate and share the working activities with the parental activities.

It’s about being perceptive and open minded. I observe and read a lot and then I try to create something new.

I think that luxury should be about feeling special. Uniqueness and quality should define luxury, not high prices or overexposed logos.

What are some of the defining characteristics of Lautēm handbags that make them different?

The design, of course, is the first thing that makes the bags stand apart from the rest. And the quality. It is not easy to appreciate at a first glance, but if you take a look at the details of the constructions of the bag, you see the excellence and the dedication of the artisans we are working with.

Describe your typical day?

Your proudest moment so far?

The moment I saw the first production ready. It was really an unforgettable moment. But also the first one we sold to a stranger and the first time I saw one of our bags in the street of Hong Kong. Plus the emails I receive from happy customers. It’s difficult to choose only one.

Describe a typical, off-duty weekend for you.

We live in a very quiet village and the weekends are about staying with the family and enjoying nature.

What was the last thing you saw that made you stop and stare?

That’s a difficult one! There is nothing at the moment that comes to my mind.

Your message for us at CP magazine:

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to present my brand. I wish you all the best for your adventure.

THE REASON FOR THE SEASON

I

t’s that time of year again when windows are lit up with elaborately decorated Christmas trees, mince pies appear in vast numbers on supermarket shelves and it’s virtually impossible to buy a dress that’s not covered in glitter or sequins. Regardless of your nationality, religion or place of residence, Christmas is pretty hard to avoid. It’s as though, from 1st December, the whole world goes Christmas crazy. The stores, usually calm, well organised and hassle free, suddenly become crowded and chaotic, any hope of finding a parking space are futile and the queues to either pay for your goods or try something on, are beyond ridiculous. And I thought Christmas was supposed to be magical! At a time when turkeys are blissfully unaware of the tragedy about to befall them and millions of trees are uprooted from their natural environment to be stood in a hot, dry atmosphere until their needles drop off, do we need to remind ourselves what Christmas is all about? It seems most of us are so preoccupied with spending money on expensive (but useless) gifts, buying far more food than is necessary and watching countless repeats on the TV, that we’ve actually forgotten the true meaning of Christmas. So, what is Christmas? Ask any child this question and most will simply tell you about a certain red-nosed reindeer, an overweight Santa Claus or the gifts they hope to find 16

DECEMBER 2018

under the tree. Far from being the meaningful celebration intended, Christmas is now a worldwide commercial holiday. It’s an excuse for businesses to make money. It puts pressure on families to spend money. And, for those far away from their loved ones, it can be the loneliest time of the year. Christmas is all about recognising, appreciating and celebrating the birth of Christ. He is the one who gives true meaning to Christmas. He is, quite simply, the reason for the season. This is perhaps the most important thing to remember. Even those who don’t openly celebrate Christmas should at least be aware of its true meaning. Christmas is not just an excuse to have a party. Neither is it an excuse to overeat or overspend. It’s a time to be thankful. With this in mind, remember to thank those who serve you over the Christmas period. Say ‘thank you’ to the member of staff that helps you in the store, to the barista who makes your Brulee Latte, and to the server who brings you your food. Think of those less fortunate than yourself, those who are unable to share a meal with their loved ones or maybe, have no loved ones at all. Christmas is more than just fairly lights and party frocks. By all means enjoy the festivities, but don’t lose sight of their meaning.

DECEMBER 2018

This gifting season is fun when you shop at Fantasy World!

G

rowing up in the UK, at this time each year my parents would take me into London to see all the wonderful street light displays and to visit two of the best and biggest toy stores in the capital city. It was such a memorable treat to become immersed in the most fabulous toys from around the world, even though the prices meant that very few would ultimately find their way into my toy cupboard at home. But it was a magical day of dreams and fantasies that I looked forward to each year. So when my good friend, the celebrity Chef Mohammed Al Kallha, told me that he was proposing to take his Tween daughter Liana for some festive shopping at Fantasy World in The Avenues Mall, I was instantly overcome with nostalgia and excitement and asked if I could join them in their expedition. Oh, and to capture some of the magic for posterity, I took along one of our CP photographers.

PHOTOGRAPHY: DALAL ALDUGHAISHEM @saycheeez_photo CREATIVE DIRECTIONS: JAMEEL ARIF @jameelarif FEATURING: CHEF. MOHAMMAD ALKALHA & LIANA @alkalha_treats LOCATION: FANTASY WORLD TOYS, The Avenues @fantasyworldtoys

Mohammed had heard that a newly revamped Tweens & Lifestyle section in the Avenues store had so many choices of products aimed specifically at Tweenagers (that’s ages between 8 and 12, I’m told) that it seemed the ideal place at this festive gifting time to buy some treats for Liana’s friends and cousins. But when he realised that Liana would happily buy everything in the store, the idea of placing his own daughter in a shopping trolley and racing around as quickly as possible might be easier on his wallet. Dad need not have been so worried, though, because the prices were all fairly reasonable and everything seemed to be such good value. www.cpmagazine.net

23

Bling, Bling, and even more Bling As if it wasn’t enough to contend with the trending Unicorns and new-season Mermaids, Mohammed’s eyes were dazzled by the vast amount of glitz, glitter and sequins by which he was surrounded. Having escaped the trolley, Liana had headed directly to examine the new Constellation collection from ISCREAM, which includes pieces like cool holographic bags (in sizes ranging from small cosmetic bags and pencil cases to backpacks and roomy weekender bags), and even a glitter-filled water bottle. All rather dazzling and sparkly!

Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star But with even more sparkle, Liana had spotted some reversible sequin pillows shaped like mermaids, unicorns, yummy cupcakes and more, some pretty slides, and the cutest blinged-out crossbody bags and purses.

24

DECEMBER 2018

Supermodel Ambitions Fantasy World offers a variety of gorgeous bracelets, jewelry boxes, trinket trays and jewelry clips in cool, trendy styles that are the perfect way to accessorize bags and backpacks, and they have some of the prettiest cord bracelets with tassels and charms. There’s also a great selection of trend-setting nail kits, and Mohammed struggled to pull Liana away from these!

Pyjama Parties and Sleepovers When Liana mentioned the word “sleepover”, dad seemed to go a little pale at the thought of a bunch of tween girls invading his space for a night. But when he saw the range of super soft kids' lounge pillows, he seriously thought to buy a few. Filled with microbeads, these squishy lounge pillows are perfect for a tween game room or a reading nook, and are anything but boring. And they are so comfortable that Liana and her friends would never want to get up and disturb dad’s quiet time – they’d be too busy lounging in luxury and discussing nails www.cpmagazine.net 25 and stuff!

A Creative Urge By this time, and with a near-full trolley, Mohammed and I were feeling tired and struggling to keep up with Liana, who was still excited and anxious to buy even more goodies. As a celebrity chef, however, Mohammed is well aware of the importance of creativity, and of encouraging creativity at a young age, so he was happy to give Liana a free reign in the final section that we visited. Mind you, I think he may have been too exhausted to stop her from piling up all the boxes in a second trolley! Of course, this visit was principally for Lania … now I need to find a friend with a son so I can invite them to go back and play in the Boys’ World section!

And Liana might look despairingly but, hey, here’s always room in every home for another cuddly toy!

Fantasy World welcomed its first customer in Kuwait on April 28, 1996. Importing some of the finest toys from Europe, the United States and The Far East and retailing them at a 1000 square meter free standing building resembling a castle at the Al Rai business district in Kuwait, the US-designed store was the region’s first upscale toy store concept in Kuwait. Organized for the convenience of the customers, the toys are segmented into categories such as Amazing Minds, Early Years, Boys World, Girls World, Tweens & Lifestyle, Outdoor & Sports and cover the needs of all kids from infants to twelve-year-olds. Fantasy World boasts its one of a kind unique online shopping facility www.fantasyworldtoys.com, giving convenience for shoppers to shop from their home and have the option of either collecting from the nearest Fantasy World store or having it home delivered. EDGE (Eclectic Designer Gifting Excitement) a special segment with latest technological gadgets accessories are ideal for gifting adults. Fantasy World now has six stores in Kuwait at different locations and is recognized as the first choice for toys and offers the latest, best and widest range of branded toys. As convenience shopping they have an online shopping website which known for its on time home delivery. 26

THE CARIBBEAN RETREAT

T

he Caribbean is incredibly diverse. Beyond the beautiful beaches and resorts, you will find historic towns and harbours, rainforests and waterfalls and lively scenes of celebration with dancing and music. In fact, it is music that is at the heart of what keeps the Caribbean moving. The many genres, instruments and sounds represent the divertisy of holiday opportunities waiting for you there. Diving and snorkelling, sailing and kayaking, windsurfing and kitesurfing. Many of the region´s biggest thrills can be found under and on the water. But an active Caribbean holiday could also involve hiking up a dormant volcano, cycling around Cuba or embarking on an adventuruous tour of Martinique which is re-emerging as a destination for intrepid travellers.

A SANCTUARY OF MAGNIFICENCE AND TRANQUILITY Where: Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico

Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, has officially reopened following an extensive restoration. The resort feels singularly exclusive as you first approach its open-air arrival pavilion, which frames the Atlantic Ocean and rises out of a modern-day moat teeming with water lilies. Situated on 1,400 acres of the former Laurance Rockefeller estate, the must-stay hotel is an intimate refuge offering a true sense of barefoot elegance. Created as an open-air enclave infused with references to the surrounding natural landscape and diverse culture, Dorado Beach is a true luxury sanctuary designed to allure the world’s most discerning travellers through a bevy of one-of-a-kind lifestyle activities. Each room has direct access to the hotel’s private white sand beach and every ground-floor unit has its own plunge pool, which complements the geometric lines and soft palette of the buildings themselves. The focus is on service and the resort's tropical surroundings. Attention is paid to detail throughout, from the framing of the impressive opening view of the ocean at reception to the retro largefaced bedside alarm clock, the ripe tamarind on a fruit plate, and the prompt arrival of the room's embajador (butler) to help with a stiff socket. Guests can also unwind at the award-winning Spa Botánico, a five-acre spa sanctuary built on a pineapple field that blends Puerto Rican ingredients and soothing indigenous traditions to impart a holistic sense of well-being. www.doradobeachreserve.com

OVERLOOKING THE MALECÓN PROMENADE Where: Paseo 206 Boutique Hotel, Havana, Cuba Leave behind the modern bustle of Havana’s new city at Paseo 206 Boutique Hotel. It is the first Small Luxury Hotel in Havana, a 1930s mansion in the storied Vedado neighbourhood. Sensitively restored to its former glory, this eight-room boutique retreat feels like you’ve stepped back in time to your very own mid-century residence. Dusky blues and lemon yellows. Wide arched windows and majolica tiles. Hallmarks of retro Havana style flow throughout Paseo 206. Elsewhere, you’ll find reflections of the owners’ Cuban and Italian homelands. Custom Italian furniture in fabrics such as velvet evoke Vedado’s decadent, high-rolling past while remaining effortlessly contemporary. Fusion thinking has played its part in the restaurant too. Eclectico is fast making a name for itself in the city restaurant scene with an Italian menu infused with Caribbean flair. Once you’ve got your bearings, it’s time to explore. Wander along the Malecón sea wall, or explore the ramshackle colonial streets of old Havana, just minutes away. However, if it’s contemporary Cuba you’re after, you needn’t go far. Vedado happens to be home to Cuba’s hippest galleries and hottest clubs. www.slh.com/paseo

THE TROPICAL UTOPIA

Where: Bahama House, The Bahamas Built around 1800 in the island’s picturesque capital, Dunmore Town, Bahama House has been characterfully restored and decorated in keeping both with its colonial heritage and the astonishing palette of pink sands that define the beaches that run along the island’s east coast. Within, interiors hark back to Fifties Palm Beach, with retro cane furnishings, walls in the light pink of the island’s beaches or blue of the surf, and parrot and pineapple motifs. Located a block from the waterfront on the west coast (there are views across Eleutheran Bay from its upper floor) and with just 11 rooms and a maximum occupancy of 22 guests, the Bahama House feels more akin to a stylish friend´s beach house than a proper hotel. Service is sincere and intuitive and every staff member knows your name. There’s no concierge desk, but a smiling ‘experience manager’ wearing board shorts and flip-flops. Marine life can be found in the crystalline waters around Man Island, not far from the property, an undeveloped 35-acre speck, with extraordinary caves and rock formations to explore, and yet more roseate. It stands along the Devil’s Backbone, the treacherous 13-mile barrier reef that protects the island and renders it off-limits to all but the most experienced sailors. https://elevenexperience.com/bahama-house-harbour-island

SUNBATHING IN PARADISE

Where: Paradise Beach Nevis, St Kitts & Nevis Aquamarine sea and white-sand beaches is the Caribbean’s calling card. But at Paradise Beach Nevis, member of Small Luxury Hotels, you share these idyllic surroundings with just six other villas. This is luxury on a highly personal, wonderfully intimate scale. In fact, it feels like seventh heaven. Hammocks, plush loungers and palm parasols will be waiting for you each day on the beach. That’s if you can leave your private residence with its own plunge pool and shady cabana, plus an outdoor shower for a tropical wake-up call. You could dine in and savour every moment, with drinks brought to you by the on-call villa staff followed by a delicious in-villa dinner prepared by a chef on request. Or you can ask your concierge for an expert restaurant recommendation and explore this exotic island. Then, as the sky turns from blue to gold to pink, wander to the low-lit exclusive residents’ bar for a shore-side sun downer. Venture beyond your pool deck and ‘Land of the Beautiful Waters’ is at your feet. Nevis is sensational for snorkelling and you could find yourself in the company of Leatherback and Hawksbill Turtles. Trace the coast from Gallows Bay to the romance of Lovers Beach or move inland to the Botanical Gardens. Then there’s golf, hiking, tennis, kayaking, horse riding, yachting and deep-sea fishing to try. https://www.slh.com/hotels/paradise-beach-nevis/

A JUNGLE WITH FRENCH FLAVOUR Where: French Coco Tartane, Martinique

Just 300 metres from the most glorious sandy beach overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, French Coco Hotel is an all-suite hotel in Tartane, surrounded by the nature reserve on the Caravelle Peninsula. Barefoot luxury at its best, this intimate property has a restaurant serving delicious French- style, Creole-inspired cuisine, a deck by the pool and a lounge. French Coco Hotel is a place to kick back and totally unwind. Calm and peace pervades throughout the hotel and each of the elegant suites is decorated in soothing shades with Caribbean-inspired wooden furniture. The suites range in size from 40 to 60 square metres and benefit from a covered terrace, a pool or a garden. Experience the authentic Caribbean and head into Tartane, a charming fishing village where you can watch the fishermen bring in their catch of the day. Visit the Castle DuBuc ruins and enjoy the dramatic sea views. Then back at French Coco Hotel, stroll down the wooded path, past coconut trees to the sea. Return to the hotel for a local drink before dinner. https://www.slh.com/hotels/french-coco/

Iceberg Viewing

Icebergs are edges of glaciers that have broken off and slipped into the ocean. Roughly 90% of icebergs seen off Newfoundland and Labrador come from the glaciers of western Greenland, while the rest come from glaciers in Canada's Arctic. Their sheer size will amaze you, and that's without seeing the ninety-percent still below the surface of the ocean.

Whale Watching

The world’s largest population of humpback whales return each year to feed on capelin, krill, and squid along the coast. Another 21 species of whales and dolphins visit along with them including the minke, sperm, pothead, blue, and orca. Between May and September, you can see these them feed, frolic and even breach near our shores. Catching a single glimpse of these majestic mammals is an exciting and awesome experience, whether it's from the deck of a tour boat, the side of your sea kayak, or a seaside trail.

or the past eleven years spent in Kuwait, I had experienced some crazy climate changes and variations in weather: high temperatures and surprisingly low temperatures too; dust storms; sand storms; humidity; blue skies and grey skies; a couple of earth tremors; some occasional lightning and thunder; some light rain showers and even a few hail showers; but the last few weeks have been quite the most extraordinary. The incessant storms, with such strong winds and heavy rain, have been harsh and damaging, and the resultant flooding experienced across the State caused such chaos that it would previously have been difficult to imagine. Official advice was to avoid using the roads unless absolutely necessary and, although I’m a keen driver who has been accustomed to wintry road conditions, I could think of no good or valid reason to risk taking my car on to the roads in such conditions. I’m sure that by now we’ve all seen countless videos on social media showing how the largest of 4x4s, and even buses and trucks, had been swept along in the currents of raging waters, and I failed to perceive why anyone would be crazy enough to venture on to the puddled roads at such a time. Of course, as a motoring correspondent, this whole situation was even more of a nightmare – with road-tests an impossibility, my role was suddenly redundant. I started to contemplate whether I should review some Jet Skis, or try to research suppliers of amphibious cars in the Middle East … but then the storms abated; the rain stopped; the sun shone brightly again; the roads dried out; and the editor asked me to review another car! But not JUST another car (and this is why I believe that the Kuwait Storm Clouds definitely had a silver lining as far as I was concerned); not just any car, but a Maserati, no less!

I learned that, for two days, we would have the use of a Maserati Ghibli S Q4. As is customary, I would be able to drive it for assessment on the first day and would then be forced to hand it over to the CP photography team for their photoshoot on the second day. Whilst I think that the car would look great alongside a somewhat portly older gentleman, this opinion is never shared by the editor (and probably not by any readers, either) and so the task fell upon one of our more attractive team members - Reem Ahmed – to escort the Maserati and photographers Bandele Zuberi and Adel (video) on a photo tour which would start at Babel restaurant, and continue at the Dahi Complex before culminating on the rooftop of Al Hamra Mall. In spite of my enforced absence it was a successful shoot, as you can see from the photos. Having taken delivery of the car on day one, it was immediately obvious that the Maserati Ghibli is a veritable masterpiece of design, with an emphasis on both sophisticated elegance and youthful sportiness. Of course, the importance afforded to the process and precision that goes into every Maserati cannot be overstated. State-of-the-art engineering is apparent throughout the car; from the chassis to the gearbox, through to the suspension and brakes, every component plays its part in delivering the levels of comfort and performance that Maserati owners have learnt to expect and enjoy. www.cpmagazine.net

37

Our test model had a brilliant white exterior that was complemented by a beautifully contrasting interior in maroon leather with exquisite stitching, which together exemplified its pure luxury. The outward appearance is modern and on-trend, beautiful and aerodynamic, but with the traditional features that give each Maserati its distinctive look – the traditional oval shape of the defining Maserati grille which sits between its aggressive headlights is a prime example. Stepping into the cabin was like entering a whole new world of deliciousness, and I was surrounded by soft leather and could easily find my optimum driving position by use of the fully electronic front seat adjustment system. The cockpit and dashboard are modern in both technology and design but, again, there is evidence of the marque’s traditions in the precision of the Trident logo embossed or stitched on the headrests, and the inclusion of the traditional Maserati clock and aluminium detailing. The stunning design of the Maserati Ghibli was reportedly made possible thanks to a brand new frame that is constructed from aluminium alloy to achieve strict weight and strength targets. A clever combination of steel and aluminium ensures that its weight distribution is ideally 38

DECEMBER 2018

balanced, while special stiffening crossmembers deliver exceptional torsional rigidity. All of this has resulted in a car with a three-meter wheelbase (the longest in its class) that promises to deliver outstanding road holding and handling, whilst providing the driver and passengers with the highest levels of safety. Having established that the Maserati Ghibli looks as great on the outside as it is awesome on the inside, and now sitting comfortably, it was time to start the engine and take this baby for a spin. Now, this might seem daft, but I absolutely loved the noise it made when the engine started; in the Ghibli S Q4 it’s a 2979cc V6 power unit which will take you to a listed maximum speed of 284kph, and accelerates from 0 to 100kph in just 4.8 seconds. (At this point, however, I should stress that I behaved myself and acted with uncommon restraint, choosing not to personally verify any of the stated speed statistics!) The twin turbo system has two intercoolers, with an aluminium alloy crankcase and cylinder heads which keep the weight of the car down and ensure the best possible levels of response and handling. A compact, lightweight exhaust system includes an air valve system which adds extra drama to the Ghibli’s highly distinctive sound. In ICE (Increased Control and Efficiency) and Normal modes the valves remain closed to keep the

engine noise discreet and understated. But when I slipped the smooth 8-speed automatic transmission into the Sports mode, which opened up the bypass valves I was again thrilled by the formidable roar that it released. The model on our road-test was the Ghibli S Q4, which is equipped with an innovative on-demand all-wheel-drive system that is capable of combining the utmost driving pleasure with absolute safety on all road surfaces. In addition, Maserati have made passive safety a top priority when designing the Ghibli. To provide its occupants with the best possible protection in the event of collision, it features the latest generation airbag system (with no less than seven airbags) and a special front-end crumple structure, seatbelt pretensioners and active headrests. So what else can I say? This car is so comprehensively equipped that it will surely have everything you want or need in a car of this class, and lots more besides. For me, I enjoyed the relatively simple pleasure of its amazing sunroof, and was impressed by a supremely effective climate control system with no less than 13 vents. And the sound system was amazing – Maserati has teamed up with Bowers & Wilkins to provide the ultimate surround sound system which made me feel as though I was in the middle of Carnegie Hall. An amazing total of fifteen top-quality speakers in combination with a 16-channel 1,280-watt amplifier, and powerful advanced sound processing from Harman, ensures that sound quality is beyond excellent and that everyone in the car gets a fair hearing. The Ghibli has so many more features, including the Maserati Stability Programme (MSP); the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS); Cruise Control; Parking Sensors and Reversing Camera; Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS); Electronic Parking Brake (EPB); Hill Holder; Blind Spot Alert (BSA) and Rear Cross Path (RCP); all these features and more that I really don’t have the space to list and do them justice, so I would urge you to seek them out for yourself……if you have or want to rekindle a passion for cars and a passion for driving, then you will surely appreciate that Maserati has a passion for technology, design, and quality. Now the weather here in Kuwait has improved, but I can think of nothing more tempting than to take a Maserati Ghibli on a road-trip around its Italian homeland.

SOMEBODY I USED TO KNOW WENDY MITCHELL

W

Gill Sherry

endy Mitchell’s first book, Somebody I used to know, is all the more moving knowing it will also, probably, be her last. Wendy was diagnosed with young-onset Alzheimer’s at the age of fifty-eight. The book describes her confusing journey pre-diagnosis, when she felt ‘an impending sense of something.’ When her worst fears were realised, she was faced with an uncertain future and, no longer to able to cope with the demands of her supervisory role within the National Health Service, a tremendous sense of loss. She describes Alzheimer’s as ‘a thief in the night, stealing precious pictures from our lives while we sleep.’ It’s a heart-rending read but also one of hope. Wendy fought to outwit dementia and, quite often, won the battle. She was made to feel stupid, humiliated and worthless and was forced to say goodbye to the things she loved the most. Driving became impossible and the phone became her enemy. But as a single mother of two daughters, she refused to think of dementia as the end. ‘Dementia has a beginning before the end and so much life to live in between.’

Keen to prove she was still capable of living an active, independent life, she became a Dementia Friends Champion, joined Dementia Research, and even met a Hollywood actress, explaining each encounter with poignancy and humour. She refused to give in to stereotype and explains how she resisted the decline. She accepted every invitation to speak, or to listen and insisted that ‘suffering from’ be replaced with ‘living with’, a much more positive alternative. Her determination to outmaneuver the daily challenges forced upon her by Alzheimer’s is inspiring to all. Hers is a story of strength, courage and perseverance and one to be appreciated by everyone, regardless of age or circumstance. Dementia may have stolen the words from her mouth, but it certainly hasn’t stolen her eloquence or her ability to share her thoughts. This book may be emotionally challenging at times, but it’s also enlightening, buoyant and compelling. As Wendy says in her own words, ‘Even as our memories fade, it’s not too late for new ones to be made.’

Her insight into the thoughts and feelings of those living with dementia provides a voice to so many. It also helps to understand what lies behind the confusion and vacancy The book includes sections written to her pre-dementia associated with the disease and how a smile or the touch self. NINE PERFECT STRANGERS

A LADDER TO THE SKY

THE LONESOME BODYBUILDER: STORIES

by John Boyne

by Yukiko Motoya

Maurice Swift is handsome, charming, and hungry for success. The one thing he doesn't have is talent - but he's not about to let a detail like that stand in his way. After all, a would-be writer can find stories anywhere. They don't need to be his own. Working as a waiter in a West Berlin hotel in 1988, Maurice engineers the perfect opportunity: a chance encounter with celebrated novelist Erich Ackermann. He quickly ingratiates himself with the powerful - but desperately lonely - older man, teasing out of Erich a terrible, longheld secret about his activities during the war. Perfect material for Maurice's first novel.

A housewife takes up bodybuilding and sees radical changes to her physique--which her workaholic husband fails to notice. A boy waits at a bus stop, mocking businessmen struggling to keep their umbrellas open in a typhoon--until an old man shows him that they hold the secret to flying. A woman working in a clothing boutique waits endlessly on a customer who won't come out of the fitting room--and who may or may not be human. A newlywed notices that her husband's features are beginning to slide around his face--to match her own.

THE MUSEUM OF MODERN LOVE

PULP

THE WONDERING YEARS: HOW POP CULTURE

by Heather Rose

by Robin Talley

HELPED ME ANSWER LIFE’S BIGGEST QUESTIONS

Arky Levin has reached a dead end. Unexpectedly separated from his wife, he suddenly has the space he needs to work composing film scores—but none of the peace of mind he needs to create. As he wanders the city, guilty and restless, it’s almost by chance that he stumbles upon an exhibition that will change his life. The installation the fictional Arky discovers—which is based on a real piece of performance art that took place in 2010—is inexplicably powerful. Visitors to the Museum of Modern Art sit across a table from the performance artist Marina Abramovic, for as short or long a period as they choose. Although some go in skeptical, almost all leave moved.

In 1955, eighteen-year-old Janet Jones keeps the love she shares with her best friend Marie a secret. It’s not easy being gay in Washington, DC, in the age of McCarthyism, but when she discovers a series of books about women falling in love with other women, it awakens something in Janet. As she juggles a romance she must keep hidden and a newfound ambition to write and publish her own story, she risks exposing herself—and Marie—to a danger all too real.

by Liane Moriarty

Could ten days at a health resort really change you forever? In Liane Moriarty’s latest page-turner, nine perfect strangers are about to find out... Nine people gather at a remote health resort. Some are here to lose weight, some are here to get a reboot on life, some are here for reasons they can’t even admit to themselves. Amidst all of the luxury and pampering, the mindfulness and meditation, they know these ten days might involve some real work. But none of them could imagine just how challenging the next ten days are going to be.

When you hear the phrase pop culture, you likely think reality television, boy bands or Real Housewives of various cities. While these are elements of popular culture, they aren’t all it has to offer. Pop culture may not cure diseases, topple political regimes, or make scientific breakthroughs, but it does play a vital role in the story of humanity.

HOW TO BE AN OVERNIGHT SUCCESS Maria Hatzistefanis

tarting a business is always difficult and risky. However, there are many books and courses that help you learn how to build a strong business foundation. This book, How to be an Overnight Success, by Maria Hatzistefanis, is the ideal book if you want to start a business. The catchy title suggests it can teach you how to be successful but, as the writer herself points out, this isn’t actually going to happen overnight. The book’s author took more than one year to become a successful entrepreneur in the beauty business. Maria Hatzistefanis is the founder of Rodial, a beauty company started from a small desk in her bedroom. In the book, she explains the ups and downs of running the business and how patience was essential whilst striving to become the favoured producer of skincare products 52

for celebrities worldwide. Those celebrities included Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner and Poppy Delevingne who all use the products and have worked with Rodial’s founder. However, working with big names didn’t come easy for her. She was fired from her first job and wasn’t a high achiever at school. But this didn’t stop her from building her dream in one of the most competitive markets. She became successful because she was ambitious, hardworking and had the best team to work with. In the book, she demonstrates how to start a business and how to use the right connections as well as divulging the best secrets on how to work within the industry. If you are interested in fashion and makeup and want to start your own business, I highly recommend this book. Use it as your guidance for your future business.

WRITING MOVIE

WRONGS moviewrongs.com by: JIM WEST

Directed by Steve McQueen Written by Gillian Flynn and Steve McQueen

T

his film has it all. A solid director and a fantastic cast with Liam Neeson, Viola Davis, Colin Farrell, Robert Duvall (he steals perhaps the best scenes in the film), Daniel Kaluuya and Michelle Rodriguez. Yet it seems this film, with such a great premise and cast, falls apart due to what I can only deduce as a horrible decision in editing.

Here come the spoilers. This film immediately thrusts you into the lives of wives of criminals. We see them getting ready for their job and saying their goodbyes. We get quickly thrown into a robbery gone wrong and suddenly the cops shoot up a van which explodes and kills the entire crew. Then we see the women going through the funerals, the wakes and grieving. Then they start to discover their husbands kept more secrets than they realised. One loses her store and Veronica (Viola Davis) receives a visit from a local gang family who want their money back - money that her husband, Harry (Liam Neeson), apparently stole. The thing that doesn’t ring true, is that certain characters are expected to know what to do. For example, Veronica’s driver is given a key and an address for a security deposit box. She goes to the box and finds a notebook containing notes on previous robberies, plus details of the next job Veronica’s husband planned, but never executed. How did Veronica know she should trade this to the people Harry robbed? It is bad when you can figure out what the ending is going to be but then the film gives you the big reveal about halfway though! This was a huge editing mistake. By revealing that someone didn’t die, it gives away the big reveal that should have come as a complete surprise to both Veronica and the viewers. Also, why didn’t Veronica try to recruit the fourth woman harder in the first place and only go to her when she was desperate to find a new driver? 54

DECEMBER 2018

This is where re-editing the film can improve it. Take the reveals of him being alive and just edit them all out of the film. The scene where Veronica discovers he is alive in the other woman’s house (with his new baby) is not needed. They spent a scene filling up soil into Tupperware containers to practice carrying the weight of the money. They should use this again. Have Veronica switch the bags in anticipation of possibly being double crossed. Then when Harry reveals himself to be alive to Veronica, she is shocked (as would be the audience) and we can see the flashback of him killing his crew. She surrenders the money and he shoots her. He leaves her for dead and drives off. He then gets a call from one of the bags where there’s a phone. We see Veronica get up and reveal she wore a bulletproof vest. He stops to check the bags and realises they are all filled with Tupperware containers. She tells him to open the glovebox and there is a gun - the revolver that killed Duvall’s character. He picks it up and asks her what it is. She tells him it is payback for leaving four widows behind. He says the fourth woman is not a widow and that the baby is his new son. Then police lights surround him and Veronica says goodbye. Harry has not only been outsmarted but also totally defeated. Then show a shot of the other woman at home with her baby, bags packed, waiting for Harry to come and take them away. But she hears news of the murder and the shoot-out with the cops that resulted in Harry being killed. The flask is then seen on the table as she breaks down to cry and we get the reveal that this flask was what was in the gift box when their son died. That scene is only now shown to us. This film could easily have been a 9 out of 10. It needed better editing in a better planned heist by Veronica, improving upon Harry’s notes which can only be done with better writing.

hen the cooler months approach, the GCC region is the place to be! It certainly is the season of the year for us to enjoy our outdoor activities and is the time to explore more of what our neigh-bouring regions have to offer? I went for a beach-mountain combo and chose the majestic coastal region of Fujairah. Are you ready to discover the highlights of my wonderful stay at the Fairmont Fujairah Beach resort? An unforgettable staycation that I wish had never ended.

The surroundings It amazes me how the Fujairah Mountains merge with the beach in a realm of peace and tranquility. There is nothing quite like it if you want to switch off from your busy life in the city. And let’s not forget about the sunsets, they are just phenomenal, don't you think?

The Room You can breathe sophistication across every inch of this one of a kind establishment including in each their rooms and suites. I particularly admired their Arabesque contemporary design. The space feels luxurious, comfortable and functional, without forgetting the killer views of the ocean and the majestic Al Hajar Mountains. It is a room you never want to leave!

On the other hand, the IAMMAI pool lounge is the best spot for that ultimate sunset moment. I couldn't have asked for more.

Dining experience For someone who loves her food as much as I do, a weekend escape wouldn't be complete without a good dining experience. The culinary choices and quality of food at the Fairmont Fujairah are just out of this world. There is so much to discover, from the vibrant European style bistro ‘Arena Sports Bar & Kitchen' to the ‘Lava Dining’ offering delicious sushi and mouth-watering peri-peri chicken. As a seafood lover, I particularly enjoyed the diversity and quality of the premium seafood dishes at the fine dining restaurant ‘The Copper Lobster', with my top picks being the Maine Lobster, their yummy Mac & Cheese and the sweet Chocolate Fondant. Give it a try and thank me later!

Spa time! I don't know about you but there is no better way to end the day than spending a couple of hours at the spa and that is exactly where I headed straight from the beach! The treatments and facilities at the Willow Stream Spa really wowed me. They have everything you can wish for in a spa, from sauna and traditional Hammam to a relaxation lounge with hot stone beds where you can chill after your treatment while sipping a delicious tea rich in antioxidants. An experience not to be missed while staying at the Fairmont Fujairah.

Fun activities If you are the active kind and want to explore Fujairah’s unique landscape, you won't be disap-pointed. They offer an array of fun guided outdoor activities, like mountain bike tours or mountain hiking. If you prefer water activities, you will find endless choices there too and if you are lucky you can even spot some turtles! Not to be missed is their newly launched 'aqua bounce’. The in-flatable slides and trampolines set in the ocean seem as popular amongst adults as they are for the little ones. I gave it a try and loved it!

THE LATEST BRITISH WINTER TRENDS SHOWCASING IN RIYADH

ome of the British brands in Saudi Arabia have been established in the country for more than eighteen years. A great example is Karen Millen. In the Winter Collections Fashion Show several of the most noticeable UK Brands assembled at The British Embassy residence garden in Riyadh. The British Ambassador, Mr. Simon Collis, give a great speech in both Arabic and English about UK fashion. He mentioned some points about London Fashion Week, specifically that the event, which featured 80 designers and 100 brands, was a testament to the fact that the UK is home to some of the world’s most innovative designers. During the Winter Show, our guests were able to see the latest collections from Austin Reed, Dune, Karen Millen and the lovely brand of Cath Kidston presented by Apparel Group in Saudi Arabia. These Brands were accompanied with makeup sessions by Sleek Cosmetics, which gave the impression of being personalized by your own makeup style. Whilst styling models before the show, I was filled with a bright warm feeling about the Winter Collections where guests could see a sparkling emerald selection of dresses by Karen Millen and the smart cut business suits by Austin Reed; elegancy combined with a remarkable British style of perfection.

THE SAUDI ARABIAN HERITAGE VILLAGE OF USHAIGER

A DAYTIME ESCAPE FROM RIYADH

I

f you are ever visiting Riyadh, you must see the remarkable heritage village of Ushaiger, located only 200km north of the capital. Ushaiger means ‘Small Blonde’ and the village was named after the colour of a small hill to the north of the village. Although it is made of red rock, locals say the Arabic word for red could be also be used for blonde in days gone by. At the entrance to the village you are greeted by a huge wooden gate set in a red mud wall. This wall continues all around the village. When walking through Ushaiger, which has over 400 mud houses, you will see unique doors decorated with traditional geometric shapes. Behind many doors are internal courtyards, some with gardens, where the rustle of palm trees in a cozy enclosure transports you back in time. With a little adventure and careful walking, some of the buildings and courtyards can be explored. There are two water wells in the village, now dry at their depth, and alongside each well is the 15 to 20 metre long camel track. Camels were once walked backwards and forwards along this track to raise buckets of well water to irrigate the land and provide water for the people. In the centre of the village, the museum reveals the daily lives of past inhabitants by displaying a multitude of day-to-day household and working artefacts. There are some small shops for souvenirs and two very enjoyable cafes. One cafe also provides a wide range of foods based on historic local recipes. There is seating for families under the cover of palm fronds, affording cooler air shaded from the sun. The other cafe offers tea and Arabic coffee, with tables and chairs arranged in secluded positions in the gardens and walkways. For the evenings, there are carpets and cushions on several stone platforms overlooking the central stream. The area where Ushaiger is located is close to amazing red sand dunes which flow and change with the winds and where you can experience the calmness of the sand, walking to the ridges, and even a picnic. Don’t forget to bring carpets, cushions and delicious foods! My visits to Ushaiger bring me tranquility and connection to the reality of life in this expansive spectacular desert. www.cpmagazine.net

Maje Evening Capsule Collection – From Day to Evening… Playing with the codes of self-assured seduction is of course one of the Maje night owl’s favourite activities. To ward off the onslaught of winter and satisfy the fashion impulses of party girls, the new evening capsule collection offers a varied wardrobe for the Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations, featuring ever more intoxicating, energetic and sexy lines. Stylish high-waist shorts are displayed either in a rock’n’chic leather version or in a sequinned vintage-disco style. Shoulders have a masculine feel yet they assert an irresistible femininity under dinner jackets that are stretched and turned into little black dresses. Loose pants display an airy volume and are complemented with lace blouses of varying lengths... With their heightened sense of glamour, Maje club girls have a stylish street look and a strong temperament. A magnificent beauty with a dark yet playful spirit, a nightclub spirit steeped in resolutely timeless seventies references, those of a Bianca Jagger swaying under the strobe lights of Studio 54 or Loulou de la Falaise turning heads at Le Palace. Silver pumps, nineties trainers, lace-up boots, a large offer in tune with the times. A liberated style that also enjoys attracting attention from morning to night. This same day to evening vibe can also be found among the bags. While the compact size of the M Mini (and its black or shocking pink embossed leather versions, or its sparkling, sequined or studded and strass versions) appeals to organised souls, the M Duo with its two detachable clutches attract the wandering eye of fashion chameleons.

PELÉ - MBAPPÉ - HUBLOT FAST FORWARD TO THE FUTURE Hublot opens a new chapter in footballing history by bringing Pelé and Kylian Mbappé together as its brand ambassadors. The paths of these two men show uncanny similarities. Is this chance or fate? There are 60 years between Pelé’s first World Cup and that of Mbappé. However, the impact of these two players on the history and love of football is something that remains absolute. Pelé and Mbappé are two timeless, devoted and esteemed symbols of the world’s most unifying sport, two generations with shared values: Humility, Generosity, Assiduity. These two precocious giants are renowned for breaking records: both being forwards who have made speed their trademark. They respectively won their first World Cup the first time they played in it, and they were both the youngest players (Pelé was 17 years old; Mbappé was 19) to score in and win a World Cup, and in addition while both wearing the number 10 jersey. A highly symbolic number in the world of football, the number 10 embodies a moment of perfect balance; at moment at which dreams become reality. In 1958, Pelé wore this jersey by chance; 60 years later, for Mbappé, it was a choice.

JIMMY CHOO LAUNCHES THE DIAMOND SNEAKER This season, follow Jimmy Choo into the future of luxury sneakers with the Diamond sneaker; a women’s and men’s trainer that pushes the possibilities of traditional shoe construction by utilising modern innovations in performance materials and design. The result is a next generation oversized sneaker that is a visual composite that sees the refined sportswear silhouette of a vintage racing shoe, superimposed into a Diamond-soled footprint. As old and new worlds collide, the familiar becomes unrecognisable. Step out of the then and leap into the now. Throughout the product range, the Diamond sneaker showcases an inventive double sole construction, a flat classic sole attached to the upper as an inner shoe then encased in the first of its kind transparent diamond inspired sole developed and engineered in Italy. The sole takes inspiration from tank treads cored out at the key flex points to allow each shoe to be as functional and as flexible as it is striking. Each Diamond sneaker design demands attention; the hero style is adorned in Swarovski® crystals for both men and women. Additional styles feature tonal leather in a palette of white and silver for women’s and amber, black and navy contrasted with white for Men’s as well as a limited edition sterling silver plated python. This is tradition reconfigured, luxury redefined and sportswear elevated in Jimmy Choo’s script. To showcase the pioneering, playful and provocative nature of this freshest release, Jimmy Choo commissioned French-Italian filmmaker Lisa Paclet to capture the high energy and technical footwork of two modern street dancers. It’s time to step into diamonds. It’s time to be moved.

The new Rado HyperChrome Chronograph in bronze and high-tech ceramic

In a seamless union of ancient and modern elements, the Rado HyperChrome Chronograph Automatic is now available in a beautifully contrasting bronze and high-tech ceramic construction. Limited to 999 pieces, this exclusive timepiece joins two materials that are perfectly suited for use in watchmaking: Bronze, which marks the passage of time by developing a rich patina, and high-tech ceramic, which boasts lightness and superior scratch resistance. The sporty-chic HyperChrome Chronograph is Rado's signature all day, every occasion timepiece for gents. In this new model, the 45 mm automatic chronograph retains its scratch resistant high-tech ceramic case – here in matt midnight black – but swaps out the ceramic bracelet for a supple brown vintage look leather strap. Adding to this harmonious contrast are side inserts and chronograph pushers crafted in bronze – humanity’s oldest alloy. Rose gold coloured hands and indexes echo the subtle metallic sheen of the bronze, while a bezel engraved with a tachometric scale provides additional functionality. www.cpmagazine.net

THE THRILL AND WONDER OF CHRISTMAS

M

any of us wait for it every year, its arrival eagerly anticipated. We use this merry time to build stronger bridges with our loved ones and seriously, who doesn’t love Christmas time? Ebenezer Scrooge perhaps? But even he soon learnt his lesson and rode back on the merry wagon faster than you can say Merry Christmas! It took three ghostly visits for Ebenezer to understand the importance of this time of year and I’m guessing some of us would be just as reluctant to buy into the whole idea. After all, isn’t it just a big waste of money? But Christmas isn’t just about family visits and gift wrapping. It’s a time for serious forgiveness. A time to leave all ills behind and carry on. A time to take from yourself and give to others. A time to open your heart, accept others, accept who you are and be happy. It’s also time to promise yourself to try and better your life, and the lives of others, this coming year. Christmas gives us all a restart button, a re-boost of energy and, most importantly, a refresh of all previous mistakes. It gives us a delete button so to speak, once a year, every year, enabling us to swipe clean any ugly memory or bad omen and replace it with the gift of a happy Christmas. But that’s not all. There’s more. This time of year makes your heart light with positivity and clear thoughts of a brighter future. Whether you like it or not, it’s often said that the Christmas mood is gracefully contagious and that you will soon find yourself sucked in by the festivities that put a smile on everyone’s face. That said, it’s also a

time for gifts, so as well as the wondrous mood it puts us in, it’s also a time to spend, spend and spend some more! But let me tell you a secret. If you have a huge family like mine with many individual tastes, you can never go wrong when you do it yourself. DIY gifts are the perfect solution for all members of your immediate family, especially when you have a tight budget. A DIY gift basket is a wonderful Christmas gift that keeps on giving, way after Christmas is over. It can contain scrubs, soaps or mixed oils, some of which you can easily make at home. For example, to make a scrub you can use ground coffee beans and brown sugar with a dash of vanilla scented organic oil and some pure virgin olive oil. Just whip them up real quick, until they are supple but still flaky and transfer into a clear class jar decorated with ribbons and a note that can make a hard man cry with sentiments! A gift such as this costs practically nothing other than the time it takes to prepare. This means a lot to the recipient because it was handmade with love. So put your thinking caps on and get to it! The more simple in cost but elaborate with thought, the more extraordinary they are to the feelings of the heart, especially if they are made, decorated and delivered solely by you. That just leaves me to say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all. May this New Year bring you peace of mind, love and all your dreams come true. Don’t forget, stay safe and fashionable!

FABULOUSLY FERRARI … DON’T MIND IF I DO!

W

hen we, at CP magazine, were invited by Ferrari Kuwait to participate in a Media Event at the beginning of November, my heart skipped a beat in excitement. An opportunity to drive one of the most famous marques of all-time? Yes please! Well, let’s be honest, who in their right mind would turn up their noses at such an offer? And so, with an expectant anticipation as the day fast approached, you might easily imagine my worry when the heavens opened and heavy rain descended upon Kuwait, threatening to disrupt or, worse still, cancel this coveted event. Our luck held, however, and although some roads had been flooded the rain abated and, with plans to follow a route well-selected by the Ferrari team, we met as requested at their showroom where we were welcomed by an impressive line-up of vehicles, the likes of which fill ohso-many people’s dreams and fantasies. CP magazine had been selected to drive the new Ferrari GTC4Lusso which, we are told, is Maranello’s latest interpretation of the four-seater concept. Undoubtable and, as expected, this new model looks stunning; a further refinement of the shooting brake coupé, reinterpreting the concept with an extremely streamlined, tapered shape that gives it am almost fastback-like silhouette. It looks sporty, but we had yet to discover how the performance would measure up. The 6,262cc V12 power unit leapt to life as we headed out to our first stopping point and photo opportunity at Dar Hamal, where we could chat with the Ferrari team and mull over our first impressions whilst enjoying breakfast in the private Chi Lounge. Although breakfast was a real treat, and very welcome, we were eager to return to the wonderfully comfortable and well-appointed interior of our test car and continue the journey. It’s clear that there has been a meticulous attention to design, and that carefully-executed detailing has produced a cabin that is a flawless triumph of sporty

72

DECEMBER 2018

luxury. As a first for the GTC4Lusso, the new Dual Cockpit Architecture has been designed to enhance the shared driving experience for both driver and front-seat passenger – this features both a Driver Cockpit and a Passenger Cockpit separated by a central divider on which are clustered all of the comfort-oriented controls common to both – and we found this unique feature particularly pleasing. The large, wraparound rear seats are also extremely comfortable and appreciated by those travelling in the rear. Driving so effortlessly and luxuriously along the Corniche we could happily have continued onwards to the Sixth Ring Road and beyond, but on reaching the Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel we made a u-turn and cruised back to the Movenpick where coffee at Starbucks was calling our names! Here, much the same as everywhere, the Ferraris attracted a lot attention from local admirers. Our next stopping point would be for an enjoyable lunch at Le Notre, which enabled us to venture gently along the Gulf Road, basking in the cabin’s luxury whilst putting the comprehensive climate control, infotainment and sound system through its paces. Without exception, all exceeded our expectations. Overall, the GTC4Lusso was a joy to drive and we would happily have not given it back, but nevertheless we headed back to the Ferrari showroom at the end of our adventure to return the car and thank our hosts for an excellent day. Whilst this review is reflective of our team’s experience, there is so much more about the GTC4Lusso that has not been expressed here – some great new technical and technological innovations; the SSC4 Side Slip Control System, and the Magnaride SCM-E damper control; all of which combine to make this car all-the-more impressive and worthy of your personal inspection! But for me, for now, I’m heading back into my fantasy world. Don’t mind if I do.

THE NEW PORSCHE 911

MORE POWERFUL, FASTER, WITH A NEW DESIGN

The eighth generation of an icon

E

ntering the eighth generation, the new Porsche 911 celebrated its world premiere on the eve of this year’s L.A. Auto Show, with the reveal of the 911 Carrera S and 4S Coupé models. The brand’s icon continues to set the standard when it comes to exclusive sportiness. Unmistakably committed to the Porsche design DNA with a more muscular look and an interior featuring a 10.9-inch touchscreen monitor, the new 911 is timeless and modern. Intelligent control and chassis elements as well as innovative assistance systems enhance the masterfully uncompromising dynamism that the classic rear-engine sports car is famed for. The next generation of flat-six turbocharged engines has been further developed and is more powerful than ever before, resulting in a performance of 450 hp (331 kW) in the 911 Carrera S and 4S. An improved injection process and a new layout for the turbochargers and charge air cooling system enhance drive efficiency even further. The power is delivered by a newly developed eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (dualclutch transmission). Additional highlights include new assistance systems, such as the Porsche Wet mode to make driving even safer, Night Vision Assist with thermal imaging camera, as well as comprehensive connectivity now also using swarm intelligence.

911 Carrera S models start from 450 hp The turbocharged flat-six engine of the 911 Carrera S* and 911 Carrera 4S* now produces 450 hp (331 kW). This corresponds to an increase of 30 hp (22 kW) compared with the previous generation. Both 911 models beat the four-second mark for acceleration from zero to 100 km/h: the rear-wheel-drive 911 Carrera S needs 3.7 seconds and the 911 Carrera 4S, with all-wheel drive, just 3.6 seconds. This makes both cars 0.4 seconds faster than their predecessors. The optional Sport Chrono Package reduces the sprint by a further 0.2 seconds. The top speed has been measured at 308 km/h for the 911 Carrera S and 306 km/h for the all-wheel-drive version. The fuel consumption (NEDCcorrelated) of the 911 Carrera S is 8.9 l/100 km, while the 911 Carrera 4S records this figure as 9.0 l/100 km.

Clear design language, unmistakable identity The exterior design is completely new and emphasises the leap in performance for the 911 internally coded as 992. Significantly wider wheel housings arch over the 20inch front wheels and 21-inch rear wheels. The rear end is now the same width across all models, highlighting the slimline centre section. At the front, the body is 45 mm wider. Electrical pop-out handles in the doors emphasise the tapered and smooth side contour, while a bonnet with a pronounced recess evokes the design of the first 911 generations. At the rear, all models feature a rear significantly wider, variable-position rear spoiler and the seamless, elegant light strip. Apart from the front and rear sections, the entire outer shell is now made from aluminium. The completely new interior is characterised by the clear and straight lines of the dashboard with recessed instruments, inspired by the 911 models from the 1970s. Alongside the central rev counter – typical for Porsche – two thin, frameless displays supply information to the driver. The centre screen of the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) is now 10.9 inches, and can be operated easily and without distraction thanks to the new interior design. Located underneath this there is a compact switch unit with five buttons for direct access to important vehicle functions. In terms of digitalisation, the 911 takes the next step into the future with permanent connectivity as well as new functions and services. The standard PCM features include navigation as well as Porsche Connect Plus.
