NEW YEAR Naseera Hoorzook

N

ew Year has come and gone and everyone around you seems to have set off with steam as they enthusiastically rolled out their new planners, created vision boards and clearly marked their goals.

You, on the other hand, may not have done so. Perhaps you weren’t in the right space to create a new chapter in your life; or maybe you were still in holiday mode and somehow didn’t feel the need. You may now feel that because everyone else around you has a plan, you’ve missed that golden opportunity and are wondering if that boat has already sailed. My own year started with a bang with planners filled in, goals for the year jotted down and the beginning stages of implementation underway. As I introspected, I realized that I happened to be in the right frame of mind that coincided with 2018 marking its way. In hindsight, last year turned out to be a wonderful year for me, filled with new challenges and adventure. Yet I hadn’t taken the time, as I did this year, to plan as the year began. I chatted to a colleague whose spirit is always upbeat and one who inspired many when she confessed that she hadn’t planned a thing. She wasn’t ready to begin her 2018 goal setting when the rest of us were. While she was on her own growth path, she felt extremely low, as if she had failed herself for not being part of that big New Year bang. I’d like to remind you, as I reminded her, that there’s no reason to feel despondent. The first day of January is always a great 14

JANUARY 2018

opportunity to start afresh, but it isn’t the one and only day to do so. How blessed are we that opportunities like this can be created at any moment? If 2nd January or 12th January was when you started, have you lost out? If you still haven’t started today does it mean your year will be ruined? Certainly not! So why not decide your own ‘right time’ and follow that? If of course, that’s what you had in mind. We are the creators of our own destinies. We have it within us to start anew at any given moment we feel the time is right for us. And guess what? There are many successful people who don’t start on 1st January. There are many people who start their goal- setting smack in the middle of the year, on their birthdays, or as a result of a need that’s brewing within. So when you are driven by a deeper, innate calling to map your path, the value it will add to your life is far greater than it may have been if you started because it was the trendy thing to do. Find your passion and align it towards an action plan. Dig deep within and begin to carve out the rest of your year when you are ready to run. For some, goals for the year may be measurable and quantifiable. For others it may be innate - an intangible desire to fulfill and practice certain upheld values or development of character. Whatever it is, dwell on it for a while, let it run deep in your bones so that you light a fire within you. Then go out and get it! Wishing you a blessed 2018, filled with all that your heart and soul needs and everything that nurtures who you are.

PARENTING NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS

T

here is something wonderful about starting the New Year; it feels like we have wiped the slate clean and turned a new page in our book of life. In a sense, we get a new chance to start all over again and that is energizing! What is on your list of resolutions? Hitting the gym? Clean eating? De-cluttering? All of those are wonderful resolutions and goals to work towards. While we are building our resolution list, allow me to share a few specifically for parents. Let us make 2018 your best parenting year; the year where you revamp your relationship with your children and hopefully become a happier and more fulfilled parent.

New Year Resolution #1: Commit to your relationship Commit to your parent-child relationship. Spend one-on-one time each day with each child. If you do not make any commitments this year, at least make this one. Spending one-on-one uninterrupted time with each child daily helps build emotional connections, reduces negative behaviors and makes children more cooperative throughout the day.

New Year Resolution #2: Commit to your other relationship When we think of the wellbeing of our families, we almost always think of our kids only and neglect our partners (true for both moms and dads). This year, make sure you commit to your relationship with your partner by making time for each other daily to reconnect, talk and share your thoughts and ideas. Schedule time at least once a month to recharge together. You will both be happier and more energized when caring for your kids.

New Year Resolution #3: Take a mommy time-out If you have been a mother for more than a day, you already know that motherhood is not easy. Actually, despite it being the most rewarding and fulfilling, it is also one of the hardest jobs. There will be times when you will not feel so much love for your kids, when you will simply be tired or even burnt out from all your responsibilities. It is precisely at these moments when you should be taking a mommy time-out. This year make time for yourself; not only will you be happier, but taking some time on your own will help you gain a new perspective on your kids and family. It's a win-win situation.

New Year Resolution #4: Assign chores This year assign a few chores to your kids. Chores will help children cultivate a sense of responsibility. Not convinced? Research has shown that chores not only help kids become more responsible but also increase their self esteem, teach them how to handle frustration effectively and delay gratification, all of which contribute to greater academic success. Wishing you and your families a very happy, healthy and rewarding New Year!

APPLICATION OF PUNISHMENT ‘MINOR CASE ‘

O

nce minors are involved in any kind of accusation, the law differentiates them in terms of penalties by applying different periods of time relating to the criminalized acts that they've taken. No crime will be taken for granted - being a minor doesn’t mean not being charged for committing a crime - but the main difference between a minor and an adult is the will to commit a crime and understanding the consequences. The will and intent of a minor isn't as clear and as conscious as the intent of an adult. The law understands that the minor is at an age where his mind is still growing. Life is still a mystery to him and, maybe, some or all of his acts are taken without prior thinking. Even when committing a crime, he wouldn't think beforehand whether the thing that made him so angry and frustrated was worth beating, slandering, fighting, stealing or committing a crime for. He wouldn't understand how difficult it is to be in jail for a long period of time, or how hard it is to lose his normal life, his family and friends; to live in a jail where there's no entertainment, a different kind of life order, and people who are not friendly with him. A special law for juveniles between 14 and 18 years old was issued under law numbers 19 and 20 of the Kuwaiti penal law regarding penalizing crimes committed by minors. The law has also issued special regulations for minors who commit crimes when aged between 7 and 14. Article number 19 mentions that if a juvenile commits a crime when aged 7 - 14 years old, the judge may order to put him in a juvenile rehabilitation institute instead of having him jailed. The period of time will be decided by the judge but whatever the circumstances, he must be released once he becomes 18 years old. As for juveniles between 14 and 18 years old, law number 20 mentions clearly that the execution penalty will change to imprisonment for a period of time that doesn't exceed 15 years. If the penalty was imprisonment for a period of time that doesn't exceed 15 years, then it shall change to a period of time that doesn't exceed 10 years if a ‘minor case’. If the minor committed a crime that is penalized with imprisonment, then the period of time should not exceed half of the maximum time that is given to the original penalty by the law. Personally, I think that every person should participate in raising awareness between young teens about the criminal law and the consequences that will occur once they commit a crime. There must be an awareness campaign in schools against violence to educate teens about the disadvantages of having a criminal record and how it will have a severe effect on their future. Minors are not only our sons and daughters, they're also the youth of future so enlightening them and guiding them to the right path is our responsibility not only towards them, but also towards future generations.

THE TOP 5 DIET TRENDS THAT NEED TO END WITH THE END OF 2017 2017 was the year of dieting and healthy eating claims. The internet and social media - even actual businesses - were bombarding consumers with messages on how to feel and look healthy since not being fit was the equivalent of not being stylish or trendy. To join the craze, many companies and influencers started delivering promises of healthy and fit bodies through some unrealistic, harmful diet regimens. Below are a few of the worst diets that were very popular in 2017, but need to disappear in 2018. 1. Ketogenic diet Super hot in 2017, the ketogenic diet consists of 75% fats, 20% protein, and only 5% carbohydrates. The metabolic goal is to utilize the fats as energy (and ketones, one of their biochemical byproducts) instead of glycogen (stored glucose or blood sugar). After about four days of inadequate carbohydrate for fuel, the body shifts to a state of ‘ketosis’ (burning fat instead of stored glucose) which can be verified through a simple blood or urine test. Weight loss will occur on a ketogenic diet, but it's not sustainable. Further, multiple nutrient deficiencies (notably fiber, vitamins and minerals) exist on the keto diet and the scientific research just isn't there yet. Ketogenic diets can be used for some medical conditions such as epilepsy but for long-term weight management, this type of diet can't even be tweaked to be healthy.

24

JANUARY 2018

2. Paleo Diet I don't really know how this diet was still going strong in 2017! The emphasis on meat and avoidance of grains and legumes is unsustainable for the health of people and the planet. Paleo diets encourage the high intake of red meats and animal proteins and the elimination of dairy, grains, legumes and many fruits. Naturally low in calories and carbohydrates, the diet will help with weight loss but there are potential health consequences like fatigue, headache, constipation, mood swings and increased risk of heart disease and certain cancers. It's time to set paleo aside and embrace healthy foods from all food groups.

3. Clean Eating ‘Clean eating’ gets millions of results on Google, but does this mean that some foods are dirty or unhygienic? Although clean eating began with good intentions focusing on whole foods, cooking at home and reading food labels - it has evolved into a fixation with perfection. Part of the problem is that the definition of ‘clean eating’ varies widely. If the goal is back to basics and whole foods, then that's worthwhile, but some clean eating followers take it further and avoid any packaged foods or ingredients they are not familiar with. Perhaps most problematic, clean eating evokes a sense of fear and obsession. Focusing on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and healthy fats rounds out a healthier perspective on eating. It's time to stop believing these popular food myths.

4. Gluten free diet Certainly, a gluten free diet is appropriate for people with celiac disease, but otherwise, it's not necessary. Gluten is a protein naturally found in wheat, barley, rye and some food additives. Eliminating it from your diet doesn't automatically reduce calories and induce weight loss because those calories are typically replaced by other

gluten-free foods. Some gluten-free foods contain more calories than their gluten-full counterparts. In fact, true gluten-free diets need to be monitored with dietitians as they can be deficient in nutrients (many B vitamins, fiber and iron). While it's not a bad idea to steer clear of refined carbohydrates that contain gluten (think cookies, doughnuts and pastries), it's unhealthy to avoid high fiber carbs that contain gluten (such as whole grain breads and cereals). In addition to that, up to date, scientific data does not support gluten-free diets as a treatment of obesity.

5. Apple cider vinegar Popular websites claim apple cider vinegar cures every health issue you can imagine - from obesity to arthritis to chronic fatigue to acne to influenza, and so the list goes on. Claims of apple cider vinegar breaking down fat tissue abound on the internet. Ingesting a spoonful of apple cider vinegar is unlikely to cause any harm, but your gastrointestinal tract isn't where your fat tissue is stored, so dissolving it doesn't make sense. One of the few published scientific studies related to apple cider vinegar and weight reduction included twenty-two other herbal supplements, making it impossible to determine which contributed to the moderate weight loss (3.5 kg) seen among healthy volunteers. Apple cider vinegar is a healthy additive to your salads or meals, but it will not cause you to lose more weight so consume it for its health benefits and not for the obesity-fighting fake promises. Finally, healthy weight is a long-term journey that does not tolerate shortcuts; the success of your diet is measured by sustainable weight loss in terms of time. This should be at least a year and unfortunately, following any of the trends above will cause you to regain your lost weight in a very short period of time, meaning all your time and efforts were in vain.

TOASTER TORMENT

W

hen is someone going to invent a toaster that can satisfy the demands of a busy hotel breakfast buffet? It doesn’t matter how luxurious the hotel, the toaster in the breakfast room is always inadequate. Most of them are the ‘conveyor belt’ type where you watch your bread disappear into a black hole at the top of the machine and, if you’re lucky, see it reappear again at the bottom. Chances are, it will barely be toasted and will still be as white as it was when you put it in. The easy answer is to put it in again, right? Wrong. For some reason, despite emerging pale and limp after one loop, it is deposited black and inedible after two. The other problem with these rotating toasters is that someone always tries to steal your toast. If you leave your bread unattended, even for a minute, you will return to find an empty machine and no sign of your toast. In fact, even if you guard the toaster whilst waiting for a miracle to occur between the heating elements, someone else in the queue will claim your toast as their own leaving you empty handed and ever so slightly incensed. I’ve witnessed people arguing over a charred slice of toast on more than one occasion! Then there’s the question of exactly when to start toasting your bread. Do you start the process before you’ve helped yourself from the hot buffet, thus guaranteeing that your toast is cold before you sit down to eat? Or, is it better to gather your hot items first and then watch your breakfast congeal on your plate as you wait in vain for the machine to produce a perfect slice of golden toast? One thing’s for sure, it’s always easy to spot exactly where the toaster is situated - just look for the cloud of smoke! Some people, whether from greed or impatience, insist

26

on inserting multiple slices of bread into the toaster at the same time. Rather than achieving the desired result of fast food, it clogs up the machine completely, often setting fire to the unfortunate slices of bread jammed midway through the cycle. At best, this results in a large queue of hungry, disgruntled hotel guests. At worst, the fire alarm is activated and breakfast is abandoned. Some establishments choose to use domestic style ‘popup’ toasters. Ordinarily, these are very easy to operate – simply insert the bread in the slots at the top, push down the lever and wait for your toast to automatically pop up. What could possibly go wrong? Well, these machines are designed for bread only. They are not designed for bagels, bread rolls, croissants or any other product from the bakery that’s too wide to fit in the slots. Unfortunately, this doesn’t stop people trying to force unsuitable items into the toaster, thus causing a blockage and jamming the mechanism. Another disadvantage with these contemporary popup toasters is misuse of the control switch. Whilst this is an essential and convenient feature in a domestic environment, it is often subject to abuse in a hotel breakfast room where people think it is funny to switch it to ‘maximum’. Innocent hotel guests are oblivious to the prank and, assuming the switch is set at a suitable level, will watch in horror as their bread is toasted to a darker shade of black. It‘s not too much to ask is it? In this world of modern, seemingly endless technology, why can’t hotels have a toaster that’s easy to use, can cope with high demand, and grills the bread to an attractive, golden brown? I live in hope. Until then, I’ll give the toaster a wide berth and help myself to some cornflakes.

Crossing Borders With

Award-winning actress, author, business owner and model, Egypt’s own Christine Solomon opens up about diversity in Hollywood, the future of the movie industry and the role of women in films. Starting her career at the tender age of five performing across theatres in Cairo, Christine Solomon has since risen to Hollywood stardom. After moving to Canada with her parents in 1988, the multi-talented actress appeared in a series of box office hits, launched a consultancy firm for aspiring actors, and still continued to showcase her talent in critically acclaimed plays across the country. More recently, she has been dividing her time between Los Angeles and Montreal, where she has been found working on a book about acting careers in Canada when she is not in production. The recipient of the Madbakh Women of Toronto’s Best Actress of Empowerment award, Christine is proving to the world that gender and cultural diversity are no longer Hollywood taboos.

JANUARY 2018

The last time we spoke was when we interviewed you for the release of Betroit. Tell us what’s been happening in the world of Christine Solomon since then. So much has been happening, Jameel, I’m not sure where to start. Let’s see…After Betroit, I was offered an opportunity to work on a production in the US, which then turned into a whirlwind of projects. In 2015 I starred in What Now directed by Ash Avildsen and also Yasmine by Val Rassi. Not long after, I did Ubisoft’s Rainbow Six: Siege, which also starred Angela Basset. In 2016, I hosted GMC’s campaign, Building for America’s Bravest, with Josh Duhamel. More recently, I performed in two Demetrius Navarro comedies: The Big Shot, distributed by Sony, and Kids Can, a DStreet Films production that will be out in 2018.

That’s a plateful indeed! Oh, 2017 has been crazy busy with work, but also so many events and festivals. Because yes, I forgot to mention, I was also a juror at six different film festivals. But I wouldn’t have it any other way. I just love every second of it all.

Please tell me more about The Big Shot. I hear it was showcased on Virgin Airlines, is that correct? Yes, the movie was released worldwide and showcased on Virgin. It’s now been picked up for distribution by Sony Pictures. The movie is about two producers who figure that the best way to ensure the success of their movie is to kill one of the actors. I play the hit man’s critical right hand, Chantal, the one who orchestrates the operation. It was such a fun experience. Working under the direction of Demetrius Navarro is such a thrill. He is a whizz with comedies.

And then there’s Yasmine, which is sort of a Sex and the City with a Middle Eastern twist, right? Yasmine was wonderful. The series is witty and shock-full of humor, but it doesn’t shy away from discussing touchier subjects in relationships. I think the comparison to SATC is because it was about four women and their relationships with men. The series was actually based on Ahlam Mosteghanemi’s book, The Art of Forgetting. I read she’s been named the world's best-known arabophone woman novelist, and I’d have to wholeheartedly agree. Reem (my character in the series) is one of the lead women the series follows. She’s a fun, corky woman, and playing her was an adventure!

You say you collaborated with Josh Duhamel on a GMC campaign? Yes, the campaign was to raise funds to build smart homes for injured veterans. You know, being of Middle Eastern descent and having lived in North America for the greatest part of my life has made me very sensitive to both the differences and similarities between the two cultures. In the end, it’s about love and it’s about acceptance. I’ve always tried, as an actress, to select roles that

allow me to use my voice and my status to help others in need and I got the opportunity to do that with this amazing project. It’s important to laugh, of course, but we shouldn’t shy away from discussing the real issues either.

You’re indeed very well known for being an emblem of diversity. You’ve actually been called ‘a role model of diversity and influence’. You are Canadian but were born in Egypt; you speak multiple languages, including Arabic; you’ve been featured in many Middle Eastern productions, and your career now spreads across theatre, movies, TV and the Internet, including Canada and the United States. Do you find that your multi-racial background affects the type of roles you get? Not at all. It’s quite the opposite. I have a versatile look, which enables me to portray different nationalities. I find that because of the opportunity I’ve had to experience firsthand all these cultural differences in my youth and throughout my life, I’ve gained a tremendous amount of understanding for subtle nuances. I speak several dialects and so I can tweak my accent to fit a given role. It’s also not difficult for me to adapt the way I look and so I get cast in a wide range of roles. In fact, I like to take some liberties and add a few cultural layers to my characters. For instance, I may try to interject Egyptian flair into a North American girl, or vice versa. I think it helps viewers capture the beauty of diversity.

with co-star Aris Alvarado

As a woman in Hollywood, do you ever feel pressured to look a certain way for a movie? No, I haven’t felt any pressure. I mean there’s always an image that the director has in mind when casting a part, and that’s quite normal. But as an actor, I can’t judge the characters. It is part of my job to understand why they are the way they are and how they’ve come to be that way. Then, once I have a full grasp of their essence, that’s when training and experience comes in; it allows you to take some liberties that’ll give your character a more authentic personality. Looks are the last thing on my mind when I take on a role. It’s just too easy to manipulate your look for a movie. I never worry about that, and I think Hollywood and the film industry in general have made tremendous strides in that area. I believe we’ve become a lot more embracing of cultural diversity and less consumed with gender stereotypes. Generations of women have been working very hard to achieve that, and I’m thankful for them because we’ve started to reap the benefits. And not just in Hollywood but across the corporate world. We still have a long way to go, but the ability to get there is within reach. It’s within us. We’ve got to want it bad enough. We can’t turn our backs on history; we have to learn from it and learn to evolve with it. It does no good to be bitter about what happened yesterday. Just like when I study a character, I prefer to try to understand why it happened and how I can move on to a better place with this baggage. I believe this is where Hollywood is heading as well.

with director Demetrius Navarro www.cpmagazine.net

Is the social narrative a criterion when you choose your films? It is. I’ve always had a preference for films that have a positive narrative or convey an important message. Whether it is to bring awareness to a cause or to help move mountains, I think actors play a big role in advancing (or regressing) social issues through the characters they choose to portray. Of course, it’s also fun to have fun once in a while! Comedies can ease the soul too.

If you could make up your dream project, what would it be? It would probably be to play a strong female lead in a musical or autobiographical film. I have an extensive theatre background and have always enjoyed doing musicals. I believe theatre enables actors to showcase their true strengths and talent, ultimately giving us a chance to shine at doing what we do best. And what better way to convey a message than to do it in song!

How do you feel about being on the cover of our 8th anniversary celebration? I hope this doesn’t sound pompous in any way because it’s not intended that way, but I am blessed to have worked in films that starred legends like Brando, DeNiro and Norton, and I cherish the memories of each of those productions, but when you get asked to participate in something like this, it’s a completely different kind of gratification. Your magazine is ground-breaking for women and artists in the Middle East, and to be chosen to help you celebrate this milestone is such an immense honor. In a way, it validates my work and shows me that my actions are indeed having an impact and making a difference in people’s lives, and that’s really the main reason driving me in this passion.

What is your advice to young people considering becoming actors? Be fearless, patient and persistent.

7 SKIN CARE RESOLUTIONS FOR THE NEW YEAR If your skin is feeling a little lackluster this January, never fear. Here are some New Year skincare resolutions for you all to make and follow in 2018: 1.TAKE OFF YOUR MAKEUP AT NIGHT:

5.CONSIDER A WEEKLY FACE MASK:

You've known since middle school that makeup can mix with skin oils and dirt to cause zits. Cosmetics can also trap skindamaging free radicals that float in the air (think: bus exhaust) against your skin. But you've had a long day, and the bathroom sink is 20 feet away... Avoid the situation entirely by washing your face as soon as you get home. At the very least, remove your mascara.

Clay based masks are a great option for oily skin types that are prone to break-outs. Clay is an excellent ingredient at drawing out impurities that can lead to spots. Kaolin in clay absorbs oil and helps mattify skin. Other ingredients that can be helpful include salicylic acid, glycolic acid, tea tree oil, and retinol. For dry skin, look for a mask containing hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is one of the most hydrophilic (or ‘water-loving’) molecules found in cosmetic products and has an enormous water-binding capacity. It therefore acts as the ideal moisturizer, hydrating dry skin and plumping out fine lines and wrinkles in ageing skin.

2.GET YOUR MOISTURE ON: Moisturize every day! For skin that’s as soft and smooth as satin, you’ll want to find a moisturizer that’s just right for your skin. The ideal time to moisturize is immediately following your shower or bath. If your skin is still dry, even with daily moisturizing, don’t be afraid to use moisturizer several times per day.

3.WEAR SUNSCREEN: Just because it is winter don't think you should toss out that bottle of sunscreen! The cold winter weather does not block you from the sun’s UV rays. By not taking proper precautions, it can still leave you with skin damage because the rays can still remain strong throughout the entire year. If you’re going outside, be sure to wear a sunscreen with a broad spectrum, as well as one that has an SPF of 30 or more.

4.DON’T FORGET TO EXFOLIATE: If you have been slacking in this department, a new year’s resolution will help you fall into a good routine. Make an honest effort to exfoliate at least once a week. Doing so will rid yourself of dead skin cells, which makes room for new, fresh skin!

36

DECEMBER JANUARY 2018 2017

6.DE-STRESS: This resolution is easier said than done but failing to manage your stress can greatly affect your skin because stress releases hormones such as Cortisol. This hormone can cause a chain reaction of various chemicals in your body, which results in your skin becoming extra sensitive to external irritators. Make a conscious effort to manage your stress this year by developing effective coping strategies. Think about what relaxes you!

7.STICKING TO YOUR RESOLUTIONS: We all love to make New Year's resolutions but it is very hard to actually stick to them. According to a research, it is estimated that only 8% actually stick to their resolution and achieve them. Be part of that 8% this year! Sticking to any kind of resolution is easier when you have an end goal in mind. Remember that by making these lifestyle changes, you can drastically improve the overall health of your skin.

SILENT MEDITATION

Where: Bliss Body Retreat, Bali For those who may not be familiar, a Vipassana, which literally means, ‘to see things as they really are’, is a 10-day retreat in which one takes a vow of noble silence and practices meditation for a minimum of 10 hours per day, every day. No use of electronics, reading, writing, exercising, speaking, touching, or even eye contact is permitted during this time. Vipassana is a form of mental training that will teach you to experience the world in an entirely new way. You will learn for the first time what is truly happening to you, around you and within you. It is a process of self-discovery, a participatory investigation in which you observe your own experiences while participating in them as they occur. The practice must be approached with this attitude: ‘Never mind what I have been taught. Forget about theories and prejudices and stereotypes. I want to understand the true nature of life. I want to know what this experience of being alive really is. I want to apprehend the true and deepest qualities of life, and I don´t want to just accept somebody else´s explanation. I want to see it for myself’. https://blissbodyretreat.com/

THE REJUVENATING GEOTHERMAL SPAS OF HUNGARY Where: Géllert Bath, Budapest

Bathing in thermal waters has been part of the culture in Budapest for centuries for two main reasons: One, millions of litres of thermal water is available from underneath the Hungarian capital through hot springs, and two, the medicinal features these waters provide. Founded in 1918, Gellért Bath is the most famous Art Nouveau thermal bath in Hungary as well as in Europe. The building features both elaborately tiled walls and warm water pools that contain calcium, magnesium, hydro carbonate, alkalis, chloride, sulfate and fluoride, which many claim can cure everything from joint pain to respiratory illness. Because the skin is the human body’s largest organ, these minerals are easily absorbed and get directly into the bloodstream and into the body’s myriad of cells. A visit to Gellért Bath is a wonderful way to spend a few hours relaxing in Budapest. Enjoying the warm water surrounded by stunning architecture is simply a must for any visitor to the Hungarian capital. http://www.gellertbath.com

At a hammam, you wash away all your troubles. The dead and dry skin, the tired muscles and the knotted nerves. And when it is done in an oasis, there is a higher level of peace and satisfaction. And the hammam treatment at the One & Only Royal Mirage in Dubai is most certainly a good one. The Traditional Oriental Hammam experience has long played a part in the cultural and social life of eastern cities. An ‘oasis of retreat’ from daily stresses, entering the Hammam is akin to a journey: winding corridors turn this way and that, dramatic archways entice you on; until, suddenly, one enters the heart of Hamman, a haven of space, warmth and comfort. The calming sound of running water echoes from the ornately tiled walls, while the gentle and gracious

attendant completes the sense of escape. Between warm steam sessions, this experience consists of a deep cleansing with traditional black soap, a vigorous ‘loofah’ body scrubbing. A light relaxing massage with various stretching movements in the heart of the Hammam will complete the experience. The One & Only Spa has an extensive menu of services, which include body wraps, body massage, face treatments, sun treatments and men-only treatment too. https://www.oneandonlyresorts.com/one-and-only-royal-mirage-dubai/

MaisonDesFleurs

Priya Jelly Owner of Maison Des Fleurs Priya Jelly is not just a budding florist, she’s the founder of Dubai based Maison Des Fleurs, a full scale floral design company giving new meaning to the word luxury. Specializing in weddings, corporate and other bespoke events, Priya has seen MDF blossom into a successful floral brand. But what inspired her to grow her blooming business and what challenges do the delicate stems present?

Please introduce yourself to our readers: My name is Priya and I started Maison Des Fleurs around four years ago. We have worked hard to expand Maison Des Fleurs, offering top-notch services, working on various special occasions and creating beautiful boxes (and soon our delicious chocolates!) Being based in Dubai opens many opportunities and Maison Des Fleurs has had many come its way to expand and cross market borders, doing business in Europe, Asia and the U.S. We aim to take the brand from Dubai and make it global.

Tell us about your education: I have my degree in Fashion and Visual Merchandising from the University of Texas in Arlington. I’ve also done specialization in Business and Administration.

To date, what has been your career highlight? It would definitely be starting Maison Des Fleurs. We started all out, offering all services in the UAE including luxury flower deliveries in a tailor-made signature box, weddings, glamorous private parties, weekly floral installations for offices, hotels, residences and palaces. Starting any business is a daunting task and requires a lot of hard work and consistency.

When and how did you move to Dubai? I moved to Dubai around twelve years ago. This is a city where anything is possible, which is how we came to start a desert floral company that delivers flower arrangements everywhere and to everyone. Dubai has been the leader in on-going growth with mega projects such as the Dubai Water Canal, Dubai Opera House and rising trillion-dollar island city districts and waterfront developments. It’s amazing to see the results of the effort that is put in to the country and its Rulers who have been leading as true and inspiring entrepreneurs.

How and when did you get started in the floral industry? We have only been open for four years, as I mentioned, but we did start with proper research. We discovered there was a lack of niche in the floral industry, 44

even though the region in which we reside has a high potential of growth in luxurious markets. This is when Maison Des Fleurs was launched in Dubai. The demand for luxury products and services has continuously been on the rise. This proves that there is a growth in income levels and customers who are ready to invest in good quality and luxury. These are the potential customers of the luxury market, who are a contributing factor in the growth of this industry.

What attracted you to the flower business? We knew the floral market was vast but it was missing that benchmark; that product that had everyone talking about it. Once I was inspired to create the box, I knew what I wanted to do. The box is actually inspired by a box of hats! We are also known for the French inspired design and almost historic, authentic creations. It’s the beauty of this style that just ensured we had to get into the market and execute our plans.

How did you develop your signature style? Maison Des Fleurs is loved for its modern style with roots in French design that embraces bright colours and seasonal flowers. We believe in quality and luxury. The customers’ emotions are translated into their unique arrangements. It’s truly amazing to feel the happiness from our customers.

When was Maison Des Fleurs established and where is the flagship store? We established Maison Des Fleurs in 2013 and the first branch was in Jumeirah. The flagship store recently opened in Al Ain, a grand 1700 sq ft boutique. The store is the first to introduce a new look to our modern French design. With blacks and golds ruling the interiors, the classic French know-how of creating romantic, whimsical floral creations using peaceful orchids, stunning roses and playful mix of colours in our signature black and white boxes will remain the same.

How many stores do you have in UAE today and how many in the region? We have five in the UAE – Dubai Design District, Jumeirah Beach Road, Dubai Etihad Mall, Abu Dhabi Town Centre and Al Ain. Also, soon in Sharjah and Dubai Mall. Elsewhere in the region, we have three; in Bahrain, Qatar and Oman, and soon in Beirut. 46

JANUARY 2018

How big is the Floral market in GCC region? We have had a great time working with an amazing team to expand the brand quickly across the Middle East and Europe, opening branches in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Oman, Monaco, Beirut and now in Al Ain. The floral market is very rewarding and yet very smart.

What are some of the services offered by Maison Des Fleurs? We create customized flower arrangements for our clients, luxury flower deliveries in the MDF signature box, weddings, glamorous private parties, weekly floral installations for offices, hotels, residences and palaces.

Who are your main customers - home buyers or corporate clients? It actually depends on the season. Although we have very loyal customers who love their unique customized box and regularly purchase this for their home and office/gifting, we also have seasonal demands for events and weddings. Corporate clients, just like home buyers, are very dedicated and we have government orders pretty often. People love giving gifts and showing their appreciation, especially in a country like UAE, that is known for its hospitality. I think this is why we are very happy to bring something for every customer.

What are some of the top reasons people buy flowers for? Home décor, gifting, wedding décor and just because they love the MDF experience. Truly, we strive to give the customers a real treat and some of our most loyal customers are in love with the floral arrangements!

What is the biggest challenge facing the floral industry in general and in this region? Definitely there are some challenges that most people in the industry will relate to. The logistics and the general operations of a business that deals with such delicate products should be taken care of very well. Everything about flowers is based of their freshness and we work really hard on managing our time and resources well in a way that our flowers are only the best. Another important thing to keep in mind is the seasons, and how customers want everything customized and very precise. Sometimes they have a notion or an image of how they want a certain venue to look and it’s our job to translate it into reality. We do have a lot of expectations and sure, flowers in general are pretty, but it takes a lot more to create a unique concept each time and make it come alive.

What’s your favourite flower and why? I like how flowers are able to convey our emotions. Different flowers have different meanings for every person and they add that special touch for all the occasions that we celebrate. Personally, I loved our coloured long life roses that we arranged in a stunning arrangement showcasing the UAE’s flag. We displayed this at the boutiques recently for the UAE National Day and I know our customers loved it too!

Where do you look for inspiration? Working with flowers has taught me that me that life has its ups and downs – thorns if you will – but it’s beautiful all the same. You have to have hope; as long as you have hope you can handle whatever life throws at you.

What are some of your favourite local spots? I do prefer a quiet night at home cooking dinner, which is very therapeutic for me. Sometimes I do go to my favourite food spots in Dubai - La Petite Maison and La Cantine du Fabourg for their good music and food.

How does social media affect your business? How do you interact with it? Social media is so important these days. People usually check out social media before making any purchases for any products. When it comes to flowers, customers love their bouquets. At MDF, we love customers showing us their wedding décor and the surprises they receive from loved ones. It’s always nice to create a beautiful space on social media and we believe in only that!

If you could travel to any one destination, floral-wise, where would you go? I would definitely visit Japan. My bucket list destination is Japan to see the sakura (cherry blossoms) because usually at that time of year (March) I am swamped and can never get away from work. I haven’t been to the tulip fields in Amsterdam, but that’s on my bucket list too. www.cpmagazine.net

LIFE WITH CAKE

TRES LECHES CAKE Steps: 1.Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly spray a 9x13'' pan with nonstick cooking spray.

2.In a medium bowl combine flour, baking powder and salt. Separate the eggs into two separate bowls.

I

t really wouldn’t be a New Year celebration without some Tres Leches Cake! If you’re reading this, then I’m hoping you’ve heard of Tres Leches Cake or ‘three milk’ cake. This classic Mexican cake is one of my favourites of all time!

The cake is similar to angel food cake. The whipped egg whites in the batter make it extra light and spongy. After baking the cake you poke holes in it with a fork and pour three types of milk over the top – evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk and whole milk – hence the name ‘tres leches’. You will need: l l l l l l l l l l

1 cup all-purpose flour 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 5 large eggs, separated 1 cup sugar, divided 1/3 cup whole milk 1 teaspoon vanilla 12oz can evaporated milk 14oz can sweetened condensed milk 1/4 cup whole milk

For the whipped topping: l l l l

1 pint heavy cream, for whipping 3 tablespoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon vanilla ground cinnamon, for topping

JANUARY 2018

3.Add 3/4 cup sugar to the bowl with the egg yolks and mix on high speed until yolks are pale yellow. Add the 1/3 cup milk and vanilla and stir to combine. 4.Pour the egg yolk mixture over the flour mixture and stir gently just until combined (don't over-mix).

5.Use electric beaters to beat the egg whites on high speed. Gradually add the remaining 1/4 cup of sugar as you mix and continue beating until stiff peaks. 6.Fold egg whites into the batter gently, just until combined. Pour batter into prepared pan. Make sure to smooth it into an even layer so your baked cake doesn't have divots in it.

7.Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean. Remove from the oven and allow cake to cool completely.

8.Combine the evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk and whole milk in a small bowl. Once the cake has cooled use a fork to poke holes all over the top of the cake. 9.Slowly pour the milk mixture over the top of the cake, making sure to pour near the edges and all around.

10.Refrigerate the cake for at least 1 hour or overnight, to allow it to soak up the milk. 11.In the meantime, whip the heavy cream, sugar and vanilla until stiff peaks. Smooth over the top of the cake. Sprinkle cinnamon on top. Serve with fresh sliced strawberries, if desired.

This cake is trending all around the world lately. I have seen it on the social media pages of many influencers. I hope you’ll give it a try, the taste is worth it! Remember: Bake for love and bake with love! Let me know how your recipe turns out: www.sherisnovember.wordpress.com Bon appetite!

Something About Rio... Gill Sherry

T

here’s something about Rio that has always captured my imagination. As a youngster I would read about Brazil in my father’s National Geographic and dream of being able to visit the vibrant, South American country. More recently, having seen Rio de Janeiro host the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and Summer Olympics in 2016, it became the number one place on my wish list. The images of endless beaches, mountainous backdrops and iconic landmarks sat stubbornly in my mind and refused to budge until finally, my dream came true. The journey to Rio from the UK is a long one. Not being a fan of long-haul flights I was not looking forward to this particular aspect of the trip but if I wanted to visit this alluring city, I would have to endure the eleven hour flight. The flight from Kuwait is even longer, involving at least one stop and a minimum flight time of seventeen hours. That said, it’s still a trip I would recommend. Our hotel offered breathtaking views of Ipanema Beach, overlooked by the imposing Two Brothers Mountain, the magnificent statue of Christ the Redeemer atop Corcovado Mountain, plus a number of hillside favelas. Rather than blotting the fabulous landscape, these infamous favelas added colour, light and character to the already captivating scene. Aware of the potential dangers involved in visiting the favelas, we sought the advice of our excellent concierge, Rodrigo. Fluent in English and a previous Rio tour guide, he was able to recommend a tour which gave a percentage of our fee back to the favela community. There are over seven hundred favelas in Rio, each growing in size every year. These densely populated communities sprawl over hills and mountains and are home to Rio’s poorest residents. Many are associated with drugs, violence and hostility but despite the harsh living conditions, over 1.3 million people live in these shanty towns. We visited Santa Marta, one of only two favelas with working transportation i.e. a cable car or funicular. On the day of our visit, a problem with the funicular resulted in us walking part-way up the hillside. The steps were difficult to negotiate and particularly hazardous in places. It was impossible to imagine how expectant mothers, the elderly or disabled would ever be able to manage. We saw cockroaches, rats and raw sewage; the hot climate adding to the stench as well as our exertions. The climb offered a glimpse into the lives of those living in the favela. Most are not there by choice, they are born into families already trapped by the system. They don’t choose to live in such conditions but have been let down by a government ignoring the problem rather than addressing it. Favelas are not slums in the true sense of the word. Most homes have clean drinking water, electricity and satellite dishes. Many of the dwellers have jobs in hotels or restaurants and pay taxes the same as other Rio residents. The insides of their fragile homes are clean and tidy, the outsides boasting elaborate, multi-coloured murals. But basic services such as garbage collection, street lighting, sanitation and general neighbourhood maintenance are sadly lacking. This is something Michael Jackson alluded to in his 1996 hit ‘They Don’t Care About Us’. The accompanying video was filmed in the very favela we visited and highlighted the plight of its residents. As a result, the singer became a local hero and a bronze statue of the pop legend now stands proudly on the hillside. The inhabitants we met were very welcoming. Contrary to what we had read about these inhospitable occupants, they were warm, friendly and genuinely happy to meet us. Some have taken advantage of the touristic opportunities by opening small gift shops or selling refreshments. But they all live with the stigma of a favela address resulting in unjustified suspicion and distain. It was certainly a trip to remember and one I feel glad to have experienced. It’s impossible to get a real feel for a city without digging deep into its soul and our trip to Santa Marta certainly did that. It also made us realise that from their mountainside positions, these favelas can boast the best views of the whole city. 50

JANUARY 2018

The world famous statue of Christ the Redeemer stands high above Rio for all to see. Day or night, this iconic landmark, a symbol of peace and Christianity, looks down over the city from the peak of Corcovado Mountain. Whatever your religion, you can’t fail to be impressed by this imposing statue, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. So eager was I to see the statue up close, I not only made the trip to the top of the mountain, I also took a helicopter ride for a bird’s eye view! This sightseeing flight was unforgettable and provided views of Christ the Redeemer that I shall never forget. It was truly breathtaking and offered endless photograph opportunities as well as a glimpse of areas you wouldn’t usually get to see. The thirty minute tour flew above endless stretches of coastline, Sugar Loaf Mountain and Corcovado as well as picturesque lakes, the 2016 Olympic Village, the remote Cagarras Islands and the Maracanã stadium. Not forgetting the tumbling spread of favelas. For a closer look at Brazil’s most famous landmark, we took the train from Corcovado station. The journey took twenty minutes and travelled up through Tijuca National Park. Purchasing tickets wasn’t the easiest of tasks and there was much confusion among visitors but ultimately, it was worth it. There are alternative methods of transport including a tour bus or taxi (or on foot) but the railway is recommended for its scenery. Whichever mode of transport you choose, there are several steps to climb before reaching the statue itself, although there are elevators for the disabled. Only at the top do you appreciate the sheer scale of the statue. It stands thirty metres tall on top of an eight metre pedestal and it’s virtually impossible to get a decent photograph when jostling for space with hundreds of other visitors. Having said that, it’s still a magnificent sight and one not to be missed when visiting Rio. The view over the city is pretty impressive too. Another must-see is the aptly named Sugar Loaf Mountain. Situated in Guanabara Bay it is accessible only by cable car which stops at Mount Urca before rising to Sugar Loaf’s summit. Unfortunately, on the day of our visit, the clouds prevented us from seeing what is usually a spectacular sight. Undeterred, we made ourselves comfortable in the mountain top (ironically titled) Beach Club and enjoyed some Brazilian hospitality before making our descent. We

may not have been blessed with a panoramic view but we enjoyed our trip all the same and can still claim to have sat atop the famous Sugar Loaf Mountain. Perhaps one of the biggest draws when it comes to Rio is its beaches. For Brazilians, the beaches are not just a destination, they’re a way of life. Even on cloudy days, people head to the beach in their droves. If they’re not splashing in the surf, lazing on the sand or walking along the shore, they’re jogging, cycling, roller-skating or skateboarding along the promenade. Whatever the time of day, hundreds of people can be seen keeping fit in their quest for the body beautiful – something you are surrounded by in Rio. If you’re in any way offended by the public display of flesh, then Brazil is definitely not for you. People are not shy when it comes to baring all and their lack of inhibitions is not just reserved for the beach. Men and women alike walk through the city in the skimpiest of swimwear as if it’s the most natural thing in the world. But they’re not doing it for attention. Cariocas, as they like to call themselves, don’t really care what anyone else thinks, they simply live their lives as they see fit and thoroughly enjoy themselves in the process. One thing I learned during my brief visit to Rio is that its people are extremely tolerant and not at all judgemental. They don’t worry about things like fashion, sexual orientation, body image or material possessions, they simply enjoy themselves. Brazil is as extravert as Kuwait is introvert. But whilst they may have a very different viewpoint to that of the Middle East, there are some similarities. One thing the two have in common is their family values. Whether on the beach, in the city or high up in the favelas, their family first attitude is clear to see.

cleaners sweep the sand and collect rubbish throughout the day, ensuring our beach experience was as safe and clean as it could be. Kuwait could learn a few things from Rio! It may come as a surprise to some that Portuguese is the official language of Brazil. Unlike many countries, English is not widely spoken and communication may, therefore, be difficult. Having said that, many restaurants offer an English menu and, as expected, hotel reception staff can usually speak good English. Rodrigo suggested a trip to the Hippie Market. Located in Ipanema, this weekly market is as popular with locals as it is with tourists and sells everything from mugs, belts and T shirts to canvas prints and animal skin rugs. It’s certainly the place to pick up your Brazilian souvenirs. Before leaving on New Year’s Day, we once again made for the beach. Being a public holiday it was particularly crowded but by now we’d adopted the Brazilian laid-back attitude and just got on with enjoying ourselves. I felt like a child again playing in the sea and jumping the waves and was very reluctant to leave. But as the old saying goes, all good things must come to an end. Until the next time, anyway.

There’s no denying Copacabana is the most famous of Rio’s beaches. Helped by Barry Manilow’s 1978 hit of the same name, its popularity has grown to new levels and it is often cited in the top ten of the world’s best beaches. Stretching 4.5km and flanked by historic forts it is overlooked by many high rise hotels and apartment blocks, as well as the world renowned Copacabana Palace Hotel. It’s also the place to see fabulously intricate sand sculptures (although taking a photograph will cost you a few Brazilian Reals). The promenade is paved in black and white and depicts a geometric wave, a design unique to Copacabana. Whilst Ipanema boasts the same black and white mosaic tiles, its pattern has a different, almost retro, theme. In both cases, the tiles, like the beach, are spotlessly clean. We were lucky enough to spend time enjoying both beaches. Chairs and parasols are available for hire and the sand is dotted with kiosks selling drinks and snacks. That said, you can purchase everything from suntan lotion to bluetooth speakers without even leaving your seat. Vendors weave their way through the crowds selling everything you could possibly need for a day at the beach. Hats, towels, cold drinks, sunglasses, bikinis, cigarettes, selfie-sticks, skewered shrimp and corn on the cob are all available to buy – you can even pay by credit card! It’s also impossible to visit Rio’s beaches without watching (or playing) a game of footvolley. The sport was created in Rio back in the 60s and is based on beach volleyball but without the use of hands and with a football instead of a volleyball. It’s fascinating to watch and clearly growing in popularity. As our trip coincided with Christmas and New Year, it was always our intention to head to Copacobana Beach for the New Year celebrations. To symbolize peace and renewal, it’s traditional to wear white so, suitably attired, we made our way (along with 2 million other revellers) towards the biggest beach party on the planet. Numerous cruise ships had the same idea as they lined up off shore in preparation for the promised firework extravaganza, adding a further touch of glamour to proceedings. Despite the crowds, spirits remained high and the atmosphere was intoxicating. Never in my life had I experienced such a feeling. A wave of happiness washed over the beach leaving no-one untouched. As midnight approached, more and more people made for the sand until, at last, the sky exploded into a mass of light and colour. Cries of ‘Feliz Ano Novo’ were drowned out by a seventeen minute firework display that surpassed any other I’d seen in my lifetime. It truly was an unforgettable night. From my point of view it was also an emotional one. I’d dreamt of visiting Rio for such a long time I could hardly believe I was finally there; to be there on New Year’s Eve made it even more magical. Understandably, many roads were closed as a result of the Copacabana Reveillon but an army of buses lined up along adjacent beach roads to transport partygoers back home. Because that’s the other thing about Rio, it’s incredibly well organised. Not only was safety a primary concern – hundreds of police officers and life guards watched over proceedings – a throng of garbage collectors waited in the wings, ready to tidy up once we’d all gone home. In fact, this efficiency wasn’t just reserved for New Year. All week we’d seen beach

GEORGIA: YOUR NEW HOME AWAY FROM HOME

F

or our latest travel destination, we chose Georgia - a gem of a country that is known as the balcony of Europe offering picturesque countryside, contemporary restaurants and a thriving nightlife. Set on the banks of the Kura River and encased by the Caucasian Mountains, Georgia offers an undisturbed countryside and old-world charm with the capital Tbilisi at the heart of the country.

Making Our Travel Plans Enticed by the beauty of Georgia and its temperate weather, we planned our travels during the winter holiday. We chose Qatar Airways to get us to our three-night stay in Georgia. Our trip included travelling from Kuwait to Doha and then Baku airport, finally arriving in Tbilisi nine hours later. While we booked Qatar Airways, we later found out that a direct flight would have been much easier and only about three hours of travel. We were able to secure our visa entry into the country with little hassle and no fee to speak of. Once we arrived in Georgia, we whizzed through customs and found a friendly face in the crowd waiting for us. We had booked Interco Travel Georgia to help with our arrangements and it had graciously sent a driver to meet us at the airport and take us to our hotel.

A Perfect Place To Stay On our ride to the hotel, we observed Georgia at its finest. The weather was good at 2°C and we were able to see why Georgia is a jewel to embark upon. We caught glimpses of the city of Tbilisi as well as its residents. The city had a warm and inviting feel to it with older architecture that was stunning in its appearance. After a 40-minute drive, we arrived at the hotel – the Holiday Inn Tbilisi. We had heard this was one of the best and biggest hotels 52

JANUARY 2018

Our First Adventure With so much excitement filling us up from this gorgeous hotel, we knew we had to begin our adventures of Georgia immediately. We had arrived midafternoon and were ready to discover all that Tbilisi had to offer. Our first venture out was a short walk around the area of the hotel and we decided to ask the staff at the hotel where we should go first. They had been so friendly to us when we checked in that we knew they would have good recommendations for us. Upon the Holiday Inn Tbilisi staffs’ suggestion, we headed to the old city. Only a short 15-minute drive away, we hopped into a taxi for the commute, which only cost us 10 Lari (or KD1) for the one-way ride. The taxi was an easy convenience for us as one could be found virtually in Georgia and we weren’t disappointed. The staff welcomed us and we immediately felt at ease with our lodging choice. The room we had reserved was on the 14th floor of this 270-room hotel and provided a breathtaking view of the city below. We had expansive floor to ceiling windows that gave us a scenic, panoramic view. There was something to see everywhere we looked. We had booked an executive suite as there were four of us including the kids who each had their own bed. The room was amazing from top to bottom. There was luxury and convenience everywhere you looked. Fine finishes adorned the room and there was a spacious living area for us to relax in.

everywhere you looked. They offered no hassle and really were reasonable with their rates. We were very happy with our experience in Georgia so far. Once in the old city, we took a walk of the area. It was a beautiful historic city with many of its houses turned into shops and restaurants. After exploring for about an hour, we stumbled upon an Indian restaurant, offering Indian and Pakistani dishes, called the Taj Mahal. Located in the basement of an old building we had a decent meal and headed back to the hotel for an early night’s rest.

Holiday Inn Tbilisi The next morning, we had one of the best breakfasts that Tbilisi had to offer at the Adjara Restaurant in the hotel. It was an amazing spread with virtually anything you could imagine offered. The staff was friendly and engaging and we were thoroughly full and happy after the meal. The room itself was 40m2 and even provided a workspace where we could feel comfortable checking email and looking up additional itinerary plans for our trip. There was a complimentary espresso coffee machine and chocolate treats in the room that helped to give us a pick-me-up after our travels. We were impressed by the modern bathroom and its reinvigorating bath and made a note of the generous amenities that also included high-speed internet, safe, minibar and cable TV. We also found a plush bathrobe and slippers and an ironing board for use later. Everything we needed for our stay had been thought of by the Holiday Inn Tbilisi.

After such a scrumptious breakfast, we wanted to see what more the Holiday Inn Tbilisi had to offer. We met with Mariam from the marketing department and requested a tour. The Holiday Inn Tbilisi had all the amenities we needed during our stay and so much more. www.cpmagazine.net

A Tour Of Mtskheta After the tour, Mariam directed us to check out Mtskheta, the old capital of Georgia. Only 20km away and just north of Tbilisi, Mtskheta is the birthplace of Christianity for Georgia. It was declared a Holy City by the Georgian Orthodox Church in 2014 and is also known as the UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its many historical monuments including the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral.

There was a restaurant, lounge bar, 24/7 fitness center and generous 25m long and 1.4m deep outdoor pool for use during the warmer months. It even included a massage room and sauna as well as several meeting and event spaces. The Adjara Conference Hall was the hotel’s largest at 220m2. It can accommodate 230 people and set up in a variety of configurations to suit any type of event. There was also a Glass Meeting Room that provided plenty of light with its glass walls. It could hold 50 people at 70m2. Other meeting and event rooms included the Idea Meeting Room, Living Room and Business Boardroom. They each held up to 70, 50 and 12 people respectively, and could be arranged in a variety of setups. All of the meeting and event rooms at the Holiday Inn Tbilisi were available with catering from the Adjara Restaurant in the hotel featuring Executive Chef Irakli Asatiani.

Mariam also told us about the 24-hour room service the hotel offered and we vowed to keep this in mind. There was also a business area in the hotel that we could use to print our boarding passes upon our departure with several Mac computers and a professional feel to it. We really have to say that the Holiday Inn Tbilisi was top notch! While we had booked an executive suite for our stay, we were also interested in seeing the other rooms that the Holiday Inn Tbilisi had to offer. Mariam was gracious enough to show us around and we got to see the standard room, which was fitted with either king or twin beds with pillowtop mattresses. This room was neat and provided plenty of room to sprawl out at 23m2. There was a workspace and a spacious bathroom with a rainfall shower. This was the perfect room for a weary traveller looking to get some rest for another adventure. We also toured a business room in the hotel, which was specifically designed to provide plenty of entertainment and rest for a business traveller. This room was 30m2 and equipped with a living room, rest area and work zone. It was almost like a home away from home. This room also featured a double pillowtop mattress for the ultimate rest space and a contemporary bathroom also equipped with a rainfall shower. A business traveller would certainly get some work done here and feel recharged after a night of rest in this oasis.

The Svetitskhoveli Cathedral is a marvel of the early middle ages and is the second largest church building in Georgia. It was built by architect Arsukidze in the early 11th century and is the crowning and burial location of many Georgian kings. Its stature and beauty will awe you and it is definitely a must-see when travelling to Georgia.

A Scrumptious Place To Eat We departed Mtskheta for the hotel around 3:30pm that day and wanted a good lunch. Mariam for the Holiday Inn Tbilisi had told us of an interesting restaurant to try and we were eager to take her up on her recommendation. We made our way to Barbarestan, which was approximately 15 minutes from the hotel on the bustling Aghmashenebeli Ave.

54

JANUARY 2018

Barbarestan was everything that Mariam promised with its cozy, family feel and deep history rooted in Georgian food. The meal was delectable and we made a note of the other dishes we wanted to try in another visit. The menu features homestyle recipes that come from Duchess Barbara Jorjadze with a twist on the traditional.

More Exploration During this day, we also ventured to the Georgian National Museum, which is massive with four floors and an extensive array of gold masterpieces. The fee to get into the museum is nominal and you will find yourself immersed in the culture of Georgia the moment you enter. We also visited Mtatsminda Park, an amusement park located on top of a hill. It was a great delight for the kids as there were rides and a view from 770m up – the highest point in Tbilisi. To get to Mtatsminda Park, we took a funicular, but a taxi is also an option. Unfortunately, we arrived at the park too late and couldn’t take full advantage of the view. It would be ideal to plan a visit in summer or earlier in the day. From here we headed to the Galleria Mall. This is a newer mall that sits adjacent to the Georgian National Museum. The mall was decorated for the winter season and featured an array of shops that had virtually anything you could imagine for purchase. After being exhausted from shopping, we went back to our hotel, where we unanimously decided to order pizza from room service as kids eat free when you order a meal. We all agreed that it was the best pizza we had ever eaten and went to bed dreaming that night of pizza pies.

than what we experienced in Tbilisi. But, we still managed to visit the museum located inside the castle of the city. Dinner followed and was arranged by Vakhtang. We went to the Golden Time restaurant within the Vardzia castle. We experienced many Georgian delicacies such as khachapuri and ajika sauce. It was one of the best places we had eaten at so far on this trip.

On To Gudauri Back to the hotel after dinner, where we readied for a new day tomorrow. The next day Vakhtang arrived with a Mitsubishi Delica, which he said was more suited to where we were going. And, he was right as we traversed to Gudauri. This was a skiing resort and a place we were all looking forward to seeing. It was beautiful, as expected, but the skiing resort was not opened yet for the season.

A Tour Of Vardzia We had a big day planned for the next day and was met by Vakhtang from Interco Georgia at 10a.m. He was here to take us on a tour of the country and had a Mercedes Vito van waiting for us. On our travels, we passed through Borjomi, a popular tourist destination because of its natural springs made famous by the Russian Empire. Our destination was to Vardzia, a medieval city inside caves of rocks. We took a speaking guide for a tour of the caves and learned the history and origins of this very ancient city. There was snow everywhere in Vardzia and it was much colder

Vakhtang wanted us to see one more destination on our trip and took us to Kazbegi. Here, we explored the old villages and had lunch at the Rooms Hotel. We loved the hotel immediately and enjoyed our meal of grilled fish. We have to say this was our favourite place to dine at since coming to Georgia and we didn’t want to leave. But, alas, we had a late flight and needed to get back.

We thanked Vakhtang for the adventures and gave our appreciation to Interco Travels. They were professional and are one of the best tour companies in Georgia. We highly recommend their services to anyone looking to tour the country.

One Last Adventure After making sure we were ready for our flight home, we took one last jaunt to see the Narikala Forest. We rode an aerial cable car to get there and were on top of the mountain, but again it was too dark for us to see. We finished our trip with some souvenir shopping and said our goodbyes to the hotel staff when checking out. We loved our short but busy trip to Georgia and are so happy with the selections we made for our travels. The Holiday Inn Tbilisi was perfect and our tour company, Interco Georgia, made our trip even more special. We are looking forward to visiting Georgia again in the summer months and experiencing even more that this country has to offer.

Have you ever wondered how giraffes live, how long they sleep or what they eat? If you have a once in a life time opportunity to live with them, then Giraffe Manor is the place for you! History: Giraffe Manor is a boutique hotel where it’s all about the long necked, squared designed animal. It’s located South of Nairobi, Kenya, with a spooling 150 acres. Giraffe Manor is a free roaming sanctuary for several endangered Rothschild giraffes. It was built in 1932 by a Scottish hunter and was kept only as a giraffe conservation until the 1970s. However, in 1984, the lodge was opened to the public as a sanctuary and the hotel helped to raise awareness of the endangered species.

Experience (Service & Facilities): The hotel provides a unique experience for guests. They ensure all staff know the guest’s names from the time they escort them from the airport until their departure. In addition, they make sure you feel welcome and safe. Guests are also provided with a questionnaire so the hotel is aware of their preferences. Once settled in at the hotel, they can freely roam around and explore the facilities until it is time to start feeding the giraffes. This great experience occurs during breakfast and afternoon tea. First, from 6am till 9am, you have the opportunity to have breakfast with the giraffes. This is a great chance to meet and be up close and personal with them - so close you can see their beautiful eyes! Later, from 3pm till 5pm, you can have afternoon tea with the giraffes and feed them. This really is the time to treasure those precious moments with these great animals, to take pictures and create memories that will last a lifetime. At the end of the day, dinner is served and then you can sleep under the stars with no noise pollution, just the sound of small creatures in their natural habitat .

The design of the hotel At Giraffe Manor the details are very important. From the interior to the exterior, it makes you feel as if you are living in the 1930s. Each room is named after a giraffe; a nice touch which adds character. The hotel rooms vary from a suite to a twin. The colours of the furniture and furnishings are influenced by the life of the giraffe itself.

Food: Tasting the food in Giraffe Manor is an exquisite and exciting experience for the guests, thanks to the hotel’s well trained chefs. The amazing food is all home-made and the menu for lunch and dinner is based on modern European cuisine with a twist from the Middle East. Of course, breakfast with the giraffes makes it extra special! The best thing about Giraffe Manor is to enjoy a once in a lifetime experience that all guests will treasure for life. www.cpmagazine.net

THE 2018 BEAUTY TRENDS January is the month for cleansing and the start of healthy habits. When it comes to our beauty regimes and routines, we usually start a new year with resolutions about diets and detox that are difficult to maintain. We should always aim for things we can keep and continue throughout the year. Quick fixes are just that - quick fixes - without lasting results. How about starting 2018 with some modern and healthy trends that are affordable and easy to stick to? It’s imperative to do things that make you feel good from the inside as well as the outside. Below, I have listed a few trends to try. VITAMINS or BEAUTY PILLS work their magic from the inside out. You will start to see the results after a few months of use but it is worth it. The best treatment is to combine topical products with complementary supplements, nutrition and exercise. Some of these vitamins are made only for the skin such as the Danish brand Imedeen. Other pills are targeted for skin, hair and nails such as Perfectil Platinum. Others, like Inversion Femme, are made to help with skin and body shape. Of course you have to consult a physician or professional for advice on what suits your necessities.

We’ve all heard about HOLISTIC BEAUTY and how important it is to keep our body and mind in a peaceful state. Our inner ‘spiritual’ beauty can get a little help from oils and aromatherapy products to heal and promote balance and better sleep. Essential oils have been used for years in various cultures for medicinal and health purposes. The particles in the oils come from extracting the different parts of flowers, plants, leaves and roots. They contain antioxidants, antimicrobial and anti inflammatory properties and can be used in different ways. SOIL is a certified eco-ethical range originally from South Africa. They sell 100% certified essential oils, many of which they grow themselves in their farm in Zululand. They don’t test on animals, have no petrochemicals, no parabens, no synthetic fragrances or colourants and their packages are made in recyclable biodegradable glass. Their range includes everything from basil, coriander seeds and clove bud oils, to citronella, sandalwood, peppermint and chamomile oils. The range is wide and difficult to choose from as they all are good and the smells are pure.

Another trend this year would be ANTI-AGEING MAKEUP. Consumers are going to be looking to achieve radiant skin. Skincare is very important as it is the base for a beautiful complexion. Bases with anti-ageing like No 7 Lift & Luminate Serum Foundation or Healthy Mix Foundation & Powder from Bourjois are highly recommended. Another favourite is the luxurious brand Sisley. Their new foundation Peach Sisleya Le Teint Fluid Foundation, Anti-Age is worth the high price tag. 58

JANUARY 2018

SHORT HAIRCUTS. This year is going to be the year for boyish crops, wedge shaped and jaw length haircuts. The styles are easy to take care of with high technology products such as the brand Alterna Haircare. Their Caviar Infinite Colour Hold shampoo and conditioner are truly the products to put on your hair. They are expensive but worth the money as they are made without sulfates and with pigment protecting antioxidants. This combination will keep your colour from going down the drain. One of the best leave-in conditioners with heat protection that I have ever tried is Kerastase Resistance Ciment Thermique Glacage ThermoSeal. Also, this medium control wax aerosol hairspray will give you texture and a tousled look with a lot of volume.

This year we are looking for REAL PRODUCT RESULTS WITH REALISTIC PRICES. We want brands that focus on results rather than fancy luxurious packaging and big budget advertising (this cost gets passed to us consumers!) such as Philosophy and other skin care favourites such as Origins.

NUDE NAILS & GLITTER are going to be big this year. Look for good quality ones such as Givenchy Le Vernis beige mousseline no.2 and the glitter ones from O.P.I.

DRESS FOR SUCCESS IN 2018

with Carla & Marie

A New Year, a new you! Does this sentence sound familiar to you? Many of us take on new challenges to begin the year on a good foot. We join our local gym, start eating healthily, sign up to hobbies we forgot we even had, and so the list goes on. But what about fashion? Believe it or not, the way we dress says a lot about ourselves and, even if subconsciously, it sends a clear message about our character and personality. So, are you ready to start creating outstanding first impressions by dressing for success this 2018? COLOUR DOES MATTER The power of colour is universal and knowing the meaning each colour has can help you decide which impression you want to create when dressing for success. For instance, red means energy and power, blue represents stability and creates the feeling of trust and loyalty, whereas purple reflects creativity and imagination. The question is, how do we apply this colour knowledge to our clothing? Let’s begin by looking at our businessman, Alex. A colour analysis was carried out in order to identify which colours suit him best. By placing warm and cool fabrics near his complexion, we learn that Alex is a conclusive ‘winter’. In other words, cool shades like blue, white, grey and black are his optimal colour palette. These colours will certainly influence our colour choices when searching for his perfect look. Furthermore, take a closer look at this table to discover the meaning of Alex’s garment colours. GARMENT SUIT SHIRT TIE BELT, SHOES & SOCKS

MEN GROOMING Men grooming is not about spending a fortune on tons of different products, it’s about ensuring you don't let yourself down with unsightly hair or untidy nails. It is simpler than you think if you apply our six men grooming tips, which all men should know about: 1- Visit your barber every four weeks to keep your hair tidy. Don’t wait until you feel you need a haircut. 2- Find your scent that suits your personality, which should be subtle and not too obvious. 3- Keep that smile on track by investing in an electric toothbrush, which is proven to reduce plaque by 11%. Don’t forget to also use a mouthwash after you brush. 4- Scrub your face once a week to eliminate dead skin from your face. 5- Shave or trim your facial hair, including sideburns, moustaches and beards. 6- Don’t forget those nails by cutting them once a week before you realise they are too long. www.cpmagazine.net

SUIT UP IN STYLE ‘The devil is in the detail’. Have you ever heard of this? In other words, what gives your look that extra bit of polish and style are the small details, which many people may quickly disregard as not important. I’m sure you can’t wait to discover what they are, so let’s dive in! •POCKET SQUARE: It adds that extra level of polish but make sure it doesn't match your tie in either pattern or fabric choice. •TIE: Firstly, your tie should coordinate with your attire and should just reach the waistband of your trousers, or be slightly shorter. Secondly, your tie should always be darker than your shirt. And last but not least is the knot. In our opinion the most refined and elegant is the Windsor knot. If you are unsure about how it’s done, check it online. There are so many videos that teach you exactly how to do it. Let’s not forget the tie dimple, which is the hollow beneath the tie knot, it gives a sophisticated appearance to your finished look. •VEST: If you're wearing a vest, always keep the bottom button unbuttoned. That said, plenty of men break this rule but are still able to pull off the threepiece beautifully. •BELT: Make sure it’s thin and the same colour as your shoes. •WATCH: A wristband watch gives an elegant, all-time classic touch to your business suit attire. •SHOES: Should be polished, shined and matching your attire. •SOCKS: Choose a colour that coordinates with your suit (usually black, grey, brown or dark blue) and make sure they are long enough not to expose your skin when you sit down. 68

JANUARY 2018

IMPRESS WITH YOUR SUIT KNOWLEDGE It is well known that a suit is the most easy-to-wear item that can fit many occasions; a formal dinner, every day office wear or even a wedding. It seems like a simple task to just buy a suit from a department store. The truth is there is a difference between a regular suit purchased without much thought and a perfectly fitted suit purchased and styled thinking of all possible details. The latter will certainly set you apart from the crowd! If we’ve left you intrigued, keep reading to find out everything you need to know about how to dress for success when wearing a suit: SUIT JACKET: The most important feature of a suit is that it should fit perfectly, especially the suit jacket. Let’s analyse each component: •Fit: In a well fitted jacket there shouldn't be any gap between the jacket’s lapels and the shirt. The shoulders should lie flat from the collar right where your shoulder bone ends. Your jacket should be just long enough to cover your pants zipper and butt. •Buttons: For formal business attire, opt for a double-button, notched lapel jacket. For a more casual trendy look, opt for a single-button peak-lapel jacket. Always unbutton your suit before sitting down, or you risk ruining it. The top button of a two-button should fall at or above the navel. •Sleeve Cuffs: These should be exposed about half an inch. For a harmonious look, try to match the visible cuff length to the amount of collar that is visible at the back of the neck. •Lapels: A detail not many men know is that the width of the jacket lapels should match the width of the tie. In addition, thin lapels are more modern whereas wide lapels are more traditional. •Vents: Double vents, as opposed to a single vent, in the back of the jacket are more modern and fashionable. This choice also gives you enough room to do that effortlessly casual ‘hand in pocket’ thing. FIT & BREAK OF SUIT PANTS: •When it comes to your suit pant, the 'fit and length’ come first. It is a personal style choice based on preference, aesthetics and body type. The choices are simple: skinny, slim or regular fit. Why don't you try them all and see which suit you best? •The Break: Let’s clarify that the ‘break' of the suit pant is the fold or creasing of the fabric above the bottom of the front of the leg, where the pant meets your shoe. There are two types of pant break: ‘No Break ‘ hem, where the pant leg just kisses the top of the shoe, sends the message that you are modern, care deeply about precise tailoring and aspire to be a fashionable gentleman. The second option is the ‘Slight Break' which features a slight fold at the bottom of your trousers. This choice states that you understand that fit is everything and you desire to be contemporary but not too trendy.

THE SHIRT: As a rule, the simpler the better. You can’t go wrong with a cotton shirt in white, off-white or pale blue. Whether you go with or without cufflinks is entirely your choice. Just make sure you avoid bright colours and logos on your shirt to keep that timeless elegant overall look. Do you now feel ready to ‘Dress for Success’?

THE SABOTEUR: THE ARISTOCRAT WHO BECAME FRANCE'S MOST DARING ANTI-NAZI COMMANDO

THEY CAN'T KILL US UNTIL THEY KILL US

by Paul Kix

In an age of confusion, fear, and loss, Hanif Abdurraqib's is a voice that matters. Whether he's attending a Bruce Springsteen concert the day after visiting Michael Brown's grave, or discussing public displays of affection at a Carly Rae Jepsen show, he writes with a poignancy and magnetism that resonates profoundly. In the wake of the nightclub attacks in Paris, he recalls how he sought refuge as a teenager in music, at shows, and wonders whether the next generation of young Muslims will not be afforded that opportunity now. While discussing the everyday threat to the lives of black Americans, Abdurraqib recounts the first time he was ordered to the ground by police officers: for attempting to enter his own car.

A scion of one of the most storied families in France, Robert de La Rochefoucald was raised in magnificent chateaux and educated in Europe's finest schools. When the Nazis invaded and imprisoned his father, La Rochefoucald escaped to England and learned the dark arts of anarchy and combat—cracking safes and planting bombs and killing with his bare hands—from the officers of Special Operations Executive, the collection of British spies, beloved by Winston Churchill, who altered the war in Europe with tactics that earned it notoriety as the “Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.” With his newfound skills, La Rochefoucauld returned to France and organized Resistance cells, blew up fortified compounds and munitions factories, interfered with Germans’ war-time missions, and executed Nazi officers. Caught by the Germans, La Rochefoucald withstood months of torture without cracking, and escaped his own death, not once but twice.

PRAIRIE FIRES: THE AMERICAN DREAMS OF LAURA INGALLS WILDER

THE LAST BLACK UNICORN

by Caroline Fraser

Growing up in one of the poorest neighborhoods of South Central Los Angeles, Tiffany learned to survive by making people laugh. If she could do that, then her classmates would let her copy their homework, the other foster kids she lived with wouldn’t beat her up, and she might even get a boyfriend. Or at least she could make enough money—as the paid school mascot and in-demand Bar Mitzvah hype woman—to get her hair and nails done, so then she might get a boyfriend. None of that worked (and she’s still single), but it allowed Tiffany to imagine a place for herself where she could do something she loved for a living: comedy.

Millions of readers of Little House on the Prairie believe they know Laura Ingalls—the pioneer girl who survived blizzards and nearstarvation on the Great Plains, and the woman who wrote the famous autobiographical books. But the true saga of her life has never been fully told. Now, drawing on unpublished manuscripts, letters, diaries, and land and financial records, Caroline Fraser—the editor of the Library of America edition of the Little House series—masterfully fills in the gaps in Wilder’s biography. Revealing the grown-up story behind the most influential childhood epic of pioneer life, she also chronicles Wilder's tumultuous relationship with her journalist daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, setting the record straight regarding charges of ghostwriting that have swirled around the books.

WHERE THE WILD COFFEE GROWS: THE UNTOLD STORY OF COFFEE FROM THE CLOUD FORESTS OF ETHIOPIA TO YOUR CUP by Jeff Koehler Coffee is one of the largest and most valuable commodities in the world. This is the story of its origins, its history, and the threat to its future, by the IACP Award–winning author of Darjeeling. Located between the Great Rift Valley and the Nile, the cloud forests in southwestern Ethiopia are the original home of Arabica, the most prevalent and superior of the two main species of coffee being cultivated today. Virtually unknown to European explorers, the Kafa region was essentially off-limits to foreigners well into the twentieth century, which allowed the world's original coffee culture to develop in virtual isolation in the forests where the Kafa people continue to forage for wild coffee berries.

CALLED TO CREATE: A BIBLICAL INVITATION TO CREATE, INNOVATE, AND RISK by Jordan Raynor

We were created by an infinitely creative God to reflect his love and character to the world. One way we do that is by continuing his creative work. In this energizing book, serial entrepreneur and bestselling author Jordan Raynor helps artists, entrepreneurs, writers, and other creatives reimagine our work as service to God and others, addressing such penetrating questions as - Is my work as a creative really as God-honoring as that of a pastor or missionary? - What does it look like to create not to make a name for myself but to glorify God and serve others? - How can I use my work to fulfill Jesus's command to create disciples? - Will what I make today matter in eternity?

HIT REFRESH

by Christina Lauren

by Satya Nadella

Rescued by Calvin McLoughlin from a would-be subway attacker, Holland Bakker pays the brilliant musician back by pulling some of her errand-girl strings and getting him an audition with a big-time musical director. When the tryout goes better than even Holland could have imagined, Calvin is set for a great entry into Broadway—until he admits his student visa has expired and he’s in the country illegally. Holland impulsively offers to wed the Irishman to keep him in New York, her growing infatuation a secret only to him. As their relationship evolves from awkward roommates to besotted lovers, Calvin becomes the darling of Broadway. In the middle of the theatrics and the actingnot-acting, what will it take for Holland and Calvin to realise that they both stopped pretending a long time ago?

As told by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Hit Refresh is the story of corporate change and reinvention as well as the story of Nadella’s personal journey, one that is taking place today inside a storied technology company, and one that is coming in all of our lives as intelligent machines become more ambient and more ubiquitous. It’s about how people, organizations and societies can and must hit refresh—transform—in their persistent quest for new energy, new ideas, relevance and renewal. At the core, it’s about us humans and our unique qualities, like empathy, which will become ever more valuable in a world where the torrent of technology will disrupt like never before. As much a humanist as a technologist, Nadella defines his mission and that of the company he leads as empowering every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more.

Oris continues its mission to conserve the world’s oceans and to bring change for the better with the Oris Clipperton Limited Edition It’s widely accepted that more people have scaled Mount Everest than have stepped foot on Clipperton Island, the world’s most isolated landmass. The uninhabited atoll sits in a zone known as the ETP, or the Eastern Tropical Zone, approximately 1,100km south of the tip of the Baja Peninsula, on the west coast of Mexico. The nearest landmass is 945km away. But despite its remoteness, the French-owned island and its unique ecosystem are under threat because of illegal commercial fishing and pollution. Its waters are a critical migration corridor for a number of threatened species of shark and pelagic, and several endemic species, on land and underwater, call it home. Earlier this year, Oris announced its sponsorship of The Clipperton Expedition, a ‘citizenscience’ expedition led by N2Pix, specialized in underwater imagery and expeditions owned by Canadians Michel Labrecque and Julie Ouimet. The Oris-sponsored expedition took a group of scientists and conservationists on the arduous 80-hour journey to Clipperton (it’s only accessible by boat) to raise awareness of the

vital role Clipperton plays in the migration patterns of these species, to gather data to help develop existing shark migration theories, and to effect lasting change that will preserve Clipperton’s ecosystem. Oris is now following this up with the launch of the Oris Clipperton Limited Edition, a diver’s watch based on the brand’s Aquis series. A percentage of funds raised by sales of the 2,000 pieces produced will go towards the protection of our ocean in upcoming initiatives. Last year, a French ministerial order created a 12-nautical-mile Marine Protected Area (MPA) around the atoll, but the ambition is to secure an extension of the MPA to 100 nautical miles and UNESCO World Heritage Site status for Clipperton.
