hat do you do when you catch a cold or suffer from stomach flu? Do you try to hide your symptoms, afraid of being judged? Do you choose to avoid treatment? Do you fear that talking about it with a loved one will make you seem weak? I’m guessing not. When we’re physically ill, most of us choose the logical route and seek medical attention to prevent prolonged suffering. We take medication or follow routines that minimize or prevent our pain from recurring in the future. So why then, do we as a society refuse to react to mental illness in the same way? Why is it that the vast majority of people shy away from seeking treatment and the rest of society sits back judging and shaming those who manage to muster up the courage to seek help? The media has long since portrayed mental illness in a dangerous light. People who experience mental illness are portrayed as being stereotypical, negative, weak, broken and simply wrong. The stereotypes surrounding mentally ill individuals are highlighted as incompetent, dangerous, different and disheveled. Most mental illness challenges are described as being severe, giving people the impression that people with mental illnesses cannot recover. Is any of that true? I think not. We heard about the famous Kate Spade’s unfortunate suicide recently. She was anything but incompetent or disheveled. People who suffer from mental illnesses don’t always have the obvious sign on their forehead. People who suffer from mental illnesses look just like us, because they are just like us. There’s a huge stigma around speaking up about mental health struggles which is why many people don’t recognize

the signs, or are unaware of their own struggle because they don’t understand what mental illness can look like. So many people are suffering in silence on their own, not sure what the problem is, or afraid to reach out. Can you imagine how debilitating that is? I hadn’t spoken up before about my own personal experience because of the exact same fears most people who go through mental health challenges face; we fear being judged. We fear being seen as weak, broken or ungrateful. We fear being treated differently. Truth is, we’re not so different. Most researchers report that almost everyone goes through some sort of mental health struggle at one point in their lives; the difference is that the severity and nature of these struggles vary greatly. I will never understand why every organ in our body is allowed to get support and sympathy when it is ill, but our brain is not. I would be sitting with a group of people and feel totally zoned out, unable to connect with most or all of the people around me. I would be walking down the hall at work and suddenly become overwhelmed, my hands would shake and sweat, my eyes would pull out of focus and I would lock myself in my office or in a bathroom, and pray to God no-one would notice, and that I wouldn’t throw up. It took me a while to get real with myself and realize that I didn’t have to suffer anymore!
hold my baby. I remember being told I was ungrateful for crying so much after having a child I struggled to conceive. I wish I’d been told instead that it was okay; that I was not a bad mother and that I would get through it. Because of my personal experience, I teamed up with Birth Kuwait and founded a support circle for women going through the emotional struggle of infertility. They also have great support for women with post partum depression and infant loss. There are so many resources now available in Kuwait. Find the right one for you and reach out. You are not alone. You do not need to suffer alone. In fact, you do not need to suffer at all. Seeking treatment does not make a person weak. As a person who went through it myself, I can tell you it takes great courage to admit that you have a problem and to knock on all the doors that can help you be yourself again. In doing so, you are taking back control over your life. And unless you take care of yourself, you cannot take care of anyone else. If you or a loved one feel you may be struggling, seek help. And seek it in the right place. There is a dangerous rise of uncertified individuals who are advising people who belong in a professional’s office. Finding the right person to help you through your struggle is very important.
I walked through the door of a clinic, still ashamed and fearful, but managed to speak to a specialist. That’s when I realized I was suffering from panic attacks. It wasn’t as simple as it sounds. I must have scheduled several times before I actually made it through the door, and even then, it took me a while to open up and come to terms with what was actually causing my panic. The more I got to learn about mental health, the more I was able to cope with my anxiety and my depression. My suffering was not permanent - my panic attacks went away when I faced the problem. The longer you avoid treatment, the longer you suffer, and the harder it is to make your way back to a healthy stable lifestyle. I realized that my anger and fear after having my first child was also a mental health struggle - one that is more common than you would believe. Post partum depression affects 1 in 7 mothers, each at a different level. It’s partly due to chemical changes in the brain after a woman delivers and also due to the emotional rollercoaster you go through overnight in welcoming a new dependant in your life.
You or a person around you could be going through a stressful time and the first step to treatment is to recognize the symptoms and reach out. Take the time to educate yourself about the signs of mental illness - a depressed person does not always look sad. In fact, they rarely do. If you are not sure how to help a loved one, ask a professional. Please do not ever ask someone who is struggling to ‘snap out of it’ or ‘look at the bright side’. They can’t help it. Tell them that you care and that they are not alone. A person’s worth is not determined by their need for help. Self care is how you take your power back, and remember always that healing is not linear. People who go through any healing process have ups and downs and that’s normal. Go through what you need to go through and if the people around you don’t understand your journey, that’s okay. They don’t need to, it’s not for them. Your pain doesn’t need to be permanent. Your struggle doesn’t need to go on forever. ‘These mountains that you are carrying, you were only supposed to climb.’ - Najwa Zebian

ove it or loathe it, football has been pretty hard to ignore these last few weeks. World Cup fever has swept the globe, uniting nations with the thrills, spills and excitement associated with the most important event in the footballing calendar. Even before the opening match on 14th June, the anticipation was palpable. Dates were circled in diaries, new giant-screen TVs were purchased, invitations were issued to World Cup parties, and the sale of international football shirts soared. With the eyes of the world on Russia, the host nation went out of its way to impress both visitors and viewers. Security was, of course, a priority - focusing on terrorism, hooliganism and racism - but it was a slightly less serious subject that grabbed the headlines in the weeks prior to the competition. Aware of their own rather stern reputation, Russian workers likely to come in contact with the 1.5 million foreign visitors were taught how to smile. Staff members working on the Moscow Metro and national railway were included in the training program ensuring a warm welcome to those football fans arriving by train. The Russians, it seemed, had thought of everything. Whilst the Russians were learning how to smile, the Italians and the Dutch were still shaking their heads in disbelief at their failure to qualify. It was hard to imagine a FIFA World Cup without these two giants on the fixture list. Of the thirty-two teams who did make it through, some fans were questioning the squad selections of their manager. Why was Leroy Sané not in the German team? Why were Marcos Alonso and Héctor Bellerín not selected to play for Spain? One could only speculate at the talent these countries did have, if they could afford to leave players of this calibre at home. Talking of Spain, the controversy continued when their manager, Julen Lopetegui, was sacked on the eve of the competition.
12
JULY 2018
Fernando Hierro was named as his instant successor. Could the timing have been any worse? Only time would tell. It’s customary for the host nation to kick off the competition, so after an impressive opening ceremony (the highlight of which was Robbie Williams’ duet with Russian soprano Aida Garifullina), Russia took on Saudi Arabia in Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium. From Saudi’s point of view, the 5-0 defeat was a disaster. The home nation, however, was ecstatic. But it wasn’t this five goal opener that dominated the headlines. Spain’s match against Portugal was, arguably, the game of the week. This fiery contest showcased football at its very best and ended in a 3-3 thriller, including a memorable hat-trick from Portugal’s number seven. Christiano Ronaldo, take a bow. Other games of note in the first round included Iran’s first World Cup win since 1998 (thanks to an injury time own goal from Morocco’s Aziz Bouhaddouz), Egypt’s disappointing defeat to Uruguay (with Mo Salah on the bench and 6,000 empty seats), Iceland’s first ever World Cup goal and, in the same game, Lionel Messi’s penalty miss for Argentina. And let’s not forget Germany’s loss to Mexico - not many of us saw that one coming! The controversial VAR system also played a part early on with players and fans still debating its practicality and added value. Even with the benefit of the Video Assistant Referee, England were denied two clear penalty awards in their opening match against Tunisia. Already, the VAR system was the subject of much debate. One could only wonder what other decisions it would influence over the course of the tournament. With each team having played its opening game, people were already speculating the winner of the Golden Boot. The favourite was obviously Christiano Ronaldo but Harry Kane, Romelo Lukaku, Diego Costa and Denis Cheryshev all got off to flying
starts with two goals each. The world’s best players were, it seemed, queuing up to score. And the race for the Golden Boot continued throughout the group stages with Harry Kane scoring a hat-trick for England in their 6-1 thrashing of Panama, Lukako netting another double for Belgium, Ronaldo increasing his tally against Morocco and local hero Cheryshev scoring again for Russia. Perhaps the biggest disappointment of the group stages was Brazil’s mediocre performance. The world expects great things from this nation of football legends and the draw against Switzerland in their opener was far from entertaining. Their second match against Costa Rica was no better with their star players a long way from their brilliant best. Their blushes were spared by a stoppage time strike from Philippe Coutinho followed by a tap-in by the world’s most expensive footballer, Neymar. However, the 2-0 result was a flattering scoreline and certainly no reflection on Costa Rica’s efforts. In fact, so dull was Brazil’s performance, Neymar’s slightly strange hairstyle and his theatrical dive in the penalty box were the main talking points of the match. Thankfully, VAR called that one right and the decision went Costa Rica’s way. But Neymar wasn’t the only one guilty of play-acting. The blatant attempts by players to influence decisions wasn’t just embarrassing, it was downright ridiculous. We saw big, strong defenders falling to the ground in feigned agony, world-class strikers taking dives more suited to a hotel swimming pool, and grown men rolling around on the floor like six-year-olds. Arguing with the referee and time wasting also featured regularly in the group games and one could only hope that the level of professionalism and sportsmanship would improve in the knockout stage. As for Brazil, their 2-0 defeat of Serbia ensured them a place in last sixteen. Which is more than can be said for Germany who failed to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since 1938. Their performance against South Korea was poor with the team clearly lacking belief. South Korea, on the other hand, with nothing to play for other than pride, played a brilliant game full of energy, determination and passion. Their historic 2-0 win (with both goals coming in stoppage time) would be remembered for years to come, particularly by the German fans who were wondering what might have been had Manchester City’s Leroy Sané been included in the squad. Of the final group matches, none were more exciting than those in Group H. The games between Japan and Poland and Senegal and Colombia kicked off simultaneously with the group positions changing constantly throughout the ninety minutes. Unable to separate Japan and Senegal by points, wins, goal difference or goals scored, eventually Senegal were illuminated based on the number of yellow cards received over the three games. A cruel way to lose out but fair-play won the day. So, with the last sixteen confirmed, it was time to say goodbye to those teams going home. Germany’s exit was, without doubt, the biggest surprise of all but many were also disappointed by Egypt’s poor performance. Few would have predicted three games without a win, without or without Mo Salah. As for those going through, Croatia suddenly became the team to watch. Three wins out of three saw them top their group ahead of Argentina who, so far, had been
disappointing. Belgium also took maximum points from the group games despite making numerous changes for their final match against England. Uruguay also finished top of the table with an impressive nine points. If the group games were anything to go by, the 2018 World Cup would definitely be one to remember. It was already shaping up to be one of the most exciting tournaments to date with shock results, VAR controversy and goalkeeping blunders all adding to the drama. And the drama continued in the first round of the knock-out stage with (arguably) the two best players in the world going home on the same day. Lionel Messi’s Argentina were outclassed by France who beat them 4-3 in Kazan. Kylian Mbappe was the hero of the match netting two second-half goals and breaking the hearts of Argentina fans, some of whom were no doubt asking why Sergio Agüero spent most of the tournament on the bench. Ronaldo’s Portugal also fell at the first hurdle of the knock-out stage following a 2-1 defeat to Uruguay. They may be superheroes in the eyes of their fans but it
takes a team to win a match and on this particular day, the teams just weren’t good enough. Next to exit the competition was Spain. For reasons known only to him, new coach Fernando Hierro dropped Andrés Iniesta for their crucial tie against Russia. Coupled with Stanislav Cherchesov’s excellent defensive tactics, this resulted in a 1-1 draw after extra time and, therefore, a penalty shootout. Prior to the tournament, Russia was the lowest ranked team in the competition but their passion and belief saw them win 4-3 on penalties. They didn’t need lessons on how to smile now! The home supporters were ecstatic and their goalkeeper, Igor Akinfeev, was most definitely the hero of the day. In the meantime, the Spanish fans were left wondering what on earth went wrong. Unbeaten in the last two years, they could only watch in disbelief as Russia marched on to their first quarter final since 1970. As if that wasn’t exciting enough, the second game of the day also resulted in

a penalty shootout. After a promising start (two goals in the first four minutes) Croatia’s game against Denmark was dull to say the least. A penalty award in the closing stages seemed sure to result in a late win for Croatia but Luka Modric’s poor spot kick was saved by Danish keeper, Kasper Schmeichel. So, the inevitable penalty shootout followed. Both keepers pulled off brilliant stops but it was Croatia who emerged victorious with Denmark joining Spain on the plane home. Next up was Brazil. Would they play any better in their match against Mexico? The energy sapping temperatures certainly didn’t help – it was hotter in Samara than it was in either of their home countries – and fatigue was clearly evident in the second half. However, it was Brazil who went on to win, securing their place in the quarter finals for the seventh consecutive time. Neymar and Roberto Firmino were the names of the score sheet but it has to be said, the tournament favourites were still lacking a certain je ne sais quoi. Brazil would play the winners of the match between Belgium and Japan. Fiftyeight places separated these two teams in the world rankings putting Belgium as clear favourites to win the game. So it came as a shock to everyone when Japan went 2-0 up. The second goal from Takashi Inui was an absolute bullet from twenty-five yards and surely a contender for goal of the tournament. Whilst Belgium lacked character and spirit, Japan it seemed, had both by the bucket load. However, a double change by coach, Roberto Martinez, had the desired effect and by the seventy-fourth minute, the score was level. It was substitute Nacer Chadli who fired Belgium into the next round with virtually the last kick of the game. The goal came from an opposition corner (why did Japan not just kick the ball around the corner flag?) with goalkeeper Courtois rolling the ball out to the feet of Kevin De Bruyne, the result of which was a brilliant team goal and heartbreak for Japan. When it came to Sweden and Switzerland, neither team looked anything like world beaters. Sweden were missing the on-pitch influence of the great Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and whilst Xherdan Shaqiri had been the stand-out player for the Swiss so far, it was hard to imagine either side progressing any further in the competition. It was an awkward, nervy game which was settled in the end by an unfortunate deflection off the boot of Manuel Akanji, giving Swiss keeper, Yann Sommer, no chance in goal. The main talking point came in the final minute of the game when the referee sent off defender, Michael Lang, and awarded a penalty to the Swedes. A VAR review deemed the foul to be outside the box and the subsequent free kick was squandered. Not that it mattered; Sweden had already booked their ticket to the quarter final. Sweden would play either England or Colombia in the next round. It was a tight game with Colombia displaying signs of petulance and provocation throughout. The referee struggled to control the South American team and lengthy delays were frequent. England were awarded a penalty in the first half and it was a full three minutes before Harry Kane was able to step up and fire his team ahead. In the interim, Wilmar Barrios was shown a yellow card for head butting Jordan Henderson (why was it not a red card?) and Johan Mojica was seen scuffing the penalty spot with this boot in a blatant attempt to sabotage the spot kick.

JULY 2018
Underhand tactics indeed. Despite their unprofessional conduct, Colombia went on to score in added time, forcing a further thirty minutes of extra time and ultimately, a penalty shootout. Unfortunately, England’s dismal shootout record (only one win in seven major tournaments) meant that most of their fans were now shielding their eyes, waiting for the inevitable. Gareth Southgate’s team, however, had other ideas and blasted their way to a 4-3 victory. Could their fans now dare to dream? One thing was for sure, you wouldn’t want to leave your seat before the final whistle. At this stage of the competition, a quarter of all games had been decided after the 88th minute! The first of the quarter final matches saw Uruguay take on France. Since the start of the tournament, Luis Suarez and his mates had been quietly going about their business, notching up wins and progressing nicely. But whilst goalkeeper, Hugo Loris, treated fans to a dazzling display in the French goal, the performance of his opposite number cost Uruguay the match. What should have been a straightforward save from in-form Antoine Griezmann, actually resulted in one of the most horrendous goalkeeping blunders in World Cup history. His gaffe gifted the French a 2-0 win and so France were the first team to go through to the semi-finals. Belgium’s game against Brazil was most definitely a game of two halves. The first forty-five minutes were tight with neither team allowing the other to play. It was Belgium who broke the deadlock, the deflected corner being credited to defender, Fernandinho. Kevin De Bruyne made it 2-0 with a glorious strike from twenty yards and whilst Brazil threatened in the second half, they still lacked their trademark finesse. Neymar’s play-acting antics continued but even he couldn’t save his team from the inevitable defeat. Renato Augusto’s goal was small consolation. Belgium, it has to be said, fully deserved their win and ensured an all-European semi-final contest for the first time since 2006. With Sweden and England both having reputations for defensive discipline and excellent tactics, this was a difficult match to predict. But it was England who went ahead after yet another successful set-piece; this time Harry Maguire heading home Ashley Young’s corner. England’s young goalkeeper (and smallest in the competition), Jordan Pickford, produced a collection of magnificent saves to keep his team in the game and Tottenham’s Dele Alli scored the winner after fifty-eight minutes to seal the win. The home nation had high hopes against Croatia and they couldn’t have wished for a better start when Cheryshev scored his fourth of the tournament to put them 1-0 up. The Croatians equalized forcing the match to extra time in which both teams managed to score. It was a roller-coaster of emotions for both sets of fans but only one team could win. The dreaded penalty shootout would decide. In a cruel twist of fate, it was Mario Fernandes, the player who put Russia level in extra time, who missed the crucial spot-kick. Their players and fans could only watch as Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic blasted Croatia into the last four.
Despite their defeat, Russia could be immensely proud of their World Cup journey. They were never expected to progress beyond the group stage and surprised everyone with their determination and belief. A place in the quarter finals was beyond their wildest dreams and their unexpected success would be remembered for years to come. Not only had the Russians organised an impeccable tournament, they had contributed massively on the pitch as well as off it. Bravo! As for the Golden Boot, England’s Harry Kane was still two goals clear of his nearest semi-final rival, Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku, and three clear of Griezmann and Mbappe of France. But with two games each left to play, it was still anyone’s prize with Eden Hazard and Luka Modric still in the race. It’s worth mentioning at this point that from the four teams left in the competition (France, Belgium, England and Croatia), forty players were signed with clubs in England’s Premier League. Compare that with twelve from La Liga, eleven from Ligue 1, nine from Bundesliga and eight from Serie A. Confirmation, should you
need it, that the English Premier League is (one of) the best in the world. Not that I’m biased, obviously. The first semi-final between France and Belgium took place in St. Petersbug. As expected, it was a competitive, even game. It remained goalless at half time but Belgium’s Eden Hazard was the stand-out player of the half. In the second half, however, Kylian Mbappe stepped up a gear and lit up the pitch with his talent and flair. France scored shortly after the break, thanks to a Samuel Umtiti header (which may or may not have been helped into the net by Marouane Fellaini’s hair). Crucially, a challenge on Hazard just outside the box on the eighty minute mark was deemed not to be a foul by the referee. Replays of the incident showed a clear foul but there was no signal from VAR so Belgium were denied a goal scoring opportunity. The game ended 1-0 with both keepers pulling off excellent and memorable saves. It was a surprise result for those convinced that the team who knocked out Brazil, would go on to win the trophy. France, it seemed, had other ideas. England couldn’t have wished for a better start to their semi-final clash against Croatia. Kieran Trippier’s free kick put them 1-0 up after just five minutes. But the set-piece specialists struggled to extend their fragile lead and Croatia always looked like scoring, eventually netting an equalizer in the sixty-eighth minute. Having been forced to play extra time in their last two matches, yet another extended game was, no doubt, the last thing the Croatians wanted. However, they battled like warriors and refused to give in to fatigue. England squandered more than one goal scoring opportunity giving Croatia the chance to grow in confidence and eventually strike their killer blow. Mandzukic was the man to break English hearts with just eleven minutes left to play, his goal guaranteeing Croatia a place in the World Cup final. Not bad for a nation smaller in size than London.
So, the scene was set for an all-European clash between France and Croatia. It was a tough one to call with France definitely starting the game as favourites. However, it was hard to write-off the Croats based on their gritty displays in both the group and knock-out stages and the under-dogs had the lion’s share of possession for much of the first half. However, against the run of play, it was France who went ahead - but could there ever be a worse time to score an own goal? Mario Mandzukic – the hero of the semi-final – headed Griezmann’s free kick into the back of his own net and put himself in the record books for being the first player ever to score an own goal in a World Cup final. Unlucky. They did hit back with a set piece of their own but their luck changed again thanks to a controversial VAR decision, resulting in a penalty for France. The referee was advised to look at the replay of a possible hand-ball by defender, Ivan Perisic. He did indeed take a long, hard look and concluded that Perisic deliberately handled the ball in the box. It was a scandalous decision and one that made a mockery of the entire VAR process. That said, Antoine Griezmann took full advantage of the unexpected opportunity and slotted the ball into the back of Danijel Subasic’s net. Despite the injustice, Croatia refused to give up. However, once again, the wind was taken out of their sails, this time by a pitch invasion – the first ever in a World Cup final. Although the officials were quick to remove the offenders, the momentum of the game was lost and Paul Pogba put France 3-1 up shortly after. It has to be said that for most of the game, Croatia managed to keep French wonder-kid, Kylian Mbappe, fairly quiet. But he was always going to have the final word and so, after sixty-six minutes, he deceived goalkeeper, Danijel Subasic, and became the first teenager to score in a World Cup final since Pele in 1958. Already there was talk of him being a future winner of the Ballon d'Or. Watch this space. As if there hadn’t been enough talking points in the match already, Hugo Loris then added to the drama with the worst goalkeeping error you’re ever likely to see in a World Cup final. Loris had ample time and space to clear the back pass from Samuel Umtiti but, for reasons known only to him, chose to step around the advancing Mandzukic, gifting the Croat an open net and a second goal for his team. Luckily, it had no bearing on the outcome but still, Loris will have nightmares about that howler for the rest of his life! The last twenty minutes of the match were somewhat dull but it had already gifted us with memories galore and had everything you could want from a World Cup final – we hadn’t seen six goals in a final since 1966. On the balance of play, there’s no doubt France deserved to win but, thanks to a dubious VAR decision, Croatia will forever ask themselves ‘what if?’ In the meantime, Didier Deschamps became only the third person ever to win a World Cup final as both player and manager, joining Mario Zagallo and Franz Beckenbauer in an exclusive club of true World Cup legends. There was some consolation for Croatia. Their captain, Luka Modric, was awarded the Golden Ball after media representatives voted him the best player of the tournament, a high accolade indeed. As for the other awards, unsurprisingly Kylian Mbappe won young player of the tournament with Belgium’s Thibaut Courtois collecting the Golden Glove. His team mate, Nacer Chadli, won goal of the tournament for that fabulous team goal against Japan and England’s Harry Kane won the coveted Golden Boot – not bad considering he didn’t score in their last three games. So, what now? Football has dominated our screens since the middle of June and now it’s all over. We can read about it, talk about it and argue about it. We can reflect on the team selections, refereeing decisions and substitutions. Thanks to technology, we can re-watch the wonder goals, goalkeeping blunders and near misses. We can also debate the pros and cons of VAR and its influence on this tournament. We should also be grateful to each and every player who contributed to an extraordinary World Cup competition. But let’s not forget to thank Russia for a job well done. For a nation who didn’t know how to smile, it certainly has plenty to be happy about. And last, but by no means least, let’s congratulate France on a well-deserved win. Vive la France! www.cpmagazine.net

WHAT IS CONTENT MARKETING AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? Nada Al-Muzaini
P
eople believe that content is the most important factor in social media. But what is content marketing and why is it important in the digital marketing world?
According to Content Marketing Institute, content marketing is defined as ‘a strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly defined audience and, ultimately, to drive profitable customer action’. Therefore, content marketing is an essential tool to create any form of advertising to impact your audience. It needs to be ‘valuable’ i.e. effective advertisements for your target audience where it meets their standards regarding the brand you are presenting. In addition, the best thing to implement content marketing or to build on your strategy is to follow steps on how to understand it. First, you need to build awareness on the customer’s problem when there is no solution. The second thing is to research on the problem-solving. Third, is

considering the value added from your product and service. Lastly, is the buy factor, when the customer makes the transaction of buying your product/service. This cycle helps the seller on how the customer will think, therefore they should build their digital platform on visual effects on how they are solving the customer’s problem and what benefit it can bring to the customers. Videos, infographics, blogging and many other tools are used for that purpose. WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE
Y
ou may recall that I wrote last month about the importance of taking advantage of our senses; sound in particular. This month, I’m concentrating on smell and the delights our nose is able to introduce us to.
One of my favourite smells is that of freshly cut grass. For me, it represents spring and, hopefully, the promise of a long, hot summer. Generally, in my home country, lawnmowers are redundant from October to March. In April, however, the garden gadgets are dragged from garages, dusted off and put to work. The smell of grass is unmistakable – although not always welcomed by hay fever sufferers – and indicates a time of year when nature thrives. Delicate blossoms appear on trees, brave buds shoot up from the earth and spring lambs jump for joy in undulating fields. Birds too, get busy building homes ready to welcome the next generation of our feathered friends. What could be more uplifting? And all from the smell of a newly mowed lawn. Many people cite freshly brewed coffee as their favourite smell. In fact, property experts recommend that vendors prepare fresh coffee when showing potential purchasers around their home. Apparently, the smell conjures warm and homely thoughts, enamouring the buyer to the property. For most of us, the promise of a caffeine fix is the most obvious benefit associated with the rich, bitter aroma that lingers in coffee shops, enticing us inside. It can also represent the joy of meeting a friend, the promise of an hour of longed for solitude or the forbidden pleasure of the accompanying cake. Freshly baked bread is another delicious aroma.
18
JULY 2018
Unfortunately, not many of us bake our own bread these days, preferring the convenience of shop bought loaves. However, the smell of rising dough can instantly take me back to my grandmother’s kitchen where the promise of a warm, buttery slice would guarantee impeccable behaviour from my ten-year-old self until I was rewarded with the doughy treat, replacing my obvious impatience with a big, satisfied grin. Recently, whilst travelling, I stayed in a privately owned Bed & Breakfast establishment. At 7am I awoke to the delicious, unmistakable smell of home baked bread. It wafted up from the kitchen to greet me on the third floor and had me up, dressed and ready to eat before you could say ‘bread and butter’. Sometimes, it’s the simplest things that give us the most pleasure; the smell of the sea, the scent of fresh roses, the aroma of flame grilled chicken. In our fast-paced lives, we often ignore the small things that are easily overlooked. However, it’s important to open ourselves up to these pleasures and to really appreciate them. Remember that smell when you first strike a match? Or the smell of fresh bed sheets, newly washed? How about the smell of suntan lotion or a rainy day? One of my personal favourites is the smell of old books. A library (or even better, a second-hand bookshop) is the perfect place to stop, breathe, and just be. All those books, all those words, all those stories; all brought to life by one, simple, deep breath. Of course, not all smells are pleasant. In fact, some are very unpleasant indeed. Our opinions may differ as to what smells nice and what doesn’t – perfumes and aftershaves are a perfect example – but the main thing is to open ourselves up to the opportunity to form an opinion in the first place. Your nose is there for a reason. Use it.

“We are a family of believers; people who truly and passionately believe in the purpose of Cubical Services and in the vision we have.”
When founding Cubical Services in 2009, Abdulrahman Jassem Al Fawaz and his two cousins had Kuwait’s economic future in mind. Now, nine years later, the company has eleven partners, all passionate about entrepreneurship, and all focused on their mission and purpose. Read on to discover how their unique business incubator can help you fulfill your business potential. Please introduce yourself to our readers.
Abdulrahman Jassem Al Fawaz. Kuwaiti. Founding partner and CEO of Cubical Services. Born 28th September 1983. Graduated from Kuwait University in 2005 as a Finance major. My vision was to enter and study the corporate life as much as I can and to simply maximize my learning curve. I was interested to learn about how to manage teams, how different departments synergize, how companies communicate internally and externally, how to set targets and budgets, and how to maintain motivation in a team. I worked for six years in the investment sector working my way through different positions and then co-founded Cubical Services. Cubical Services is my passion! I care about the Kuwaiti economy, especially currently, as we recognize that to have a stable economy there needs to be a balanced set of diverse elements that contribute to our economy. As many know, over 90% of Kuwait’s economy is reliant on Oil and Gas. With today’s 20
JULY 2018
world focus on renewable energy, Kuwait’s future is in a risky situation. This is why I believe in what we are doing and in the importance of entrepreneurship.
Tell us about Cubical Services. When did it officially open?
Cubical Services was established in 2009. It is Kuwait’s first officially licensed, independent, one-stop business incubator, and the first to be qualified by the National Fund in February 2017. Cubical Services strives to actively encourage current and potential entrepreneurs to successfully execute their business ambitions by offering all-inclusive services and support in every part of the business cycle to create a healthy ecosystem where entrepreneurs can fulfill their business potential in order to enrich the Kuwaiti economy and elevate its talents regionally and internationally. Since its launch, Cubical Services has worked on over 550 projects and with over 1,000 entrepreneurs ranging from fully implementing the business to managing the full operations of an established business, and gained experience in the
following industries: Business Services, Consumer Services, Education, Financial Services, Government, Healthcare, Media and Entertainment, Non-profit, Real Estate and Construction, Retail, Fashion, Software and Internet, Food and Beverage, and Wholesale and Distribution.
What problem did you originally hope to solve by starting Cubical Services?
In 2008, two of my cousins, Abdulrahman Al Nouri and Mijbel Al Qattan, and I considered starting our own business in a different field. Along the journey of challenges we faced with government processes, licensing, legalities and regulations, paperwork and more, we discovered firsthand that an entrepreneur’s journey is faced with many obstacles that slow down and distract from their main focus and from building the core of their business, resulting in a discouraging environment. Therefore, we took it upon ourselves to be the change we want to see by providing solutions to these challenges through tools and services. Initially, we established in 2009 with workspaces and simple services and then gradually developed Cubical Services into what is today, a full-fledged licensed business incubator with over 40 different services. Although we launched Cubical Services as three cousins, we learned that our vision cannot be realized if we cannot reflect it on driven and passionate Kuwaiti entrepreneurs in the ecosystem. To do this, Cubical Services decided to take a number of actions: One action was to bring entrepreneurs on board the Cubical Services family, and this is why and how we grew from three to the eleven partners we have today. We also decided to establish partnerships with entrepreneurs, collaborate and build strategic alliances based on mutual benefits. In the future, we plan for Cubical Services to both create and adopt a diverse set of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) with specialized services who can serve each other in an efficient and supportive manner. In the midst of our increasing exposure to talented entrepreneurs and ambitious SMEs, we discovered that these talents have the potential to shine, not only locally, but regionally and internationally. As a result, we aim to uncover opportunities for Kuwaiti businesses to take their SMEs abroad and have the confidence to compete on international standards.
What are the main services offered by Cubical Services?
Cubical Services takes a customer-centric and a market-driven approach, meaning that our services are constantly developing and adjusting to the current needs of the market in order to make sure that our services stay relevant to our clients and to entrepreneurs. As a result, Cubical Services has developed four different divisions all serving the entrepreneurship ecosystem through their specialized services. Currently, our main services relate to assisting entrepreneurs to plan, implement and operate their business from starting a business from scratch, to growth. This includes brainstorming and concept development, creating business plans and financial projections, government and ministry work, searching and communicating with appropriate vendors and more. We also offer outsourced add-on services such as book-keeping and accounting set-up, legal services, marketing services, construction services and more. Additionally, our other divisions offer training and program creation focused on increasing entrepreneurship awareness and knowledge; property management, tenant mix optimization and event management, and creating industry specific incubation programs.
What makes Cubical Services unique?
To start, being the first licensed business incubator and the first incubator qualified by the National Fund, has allowed Cubical Services to gain extensive experience in the Kuwaiti market. This has led Cubical Services to create a strong network and to have expert know-how through a learning-by-doing approach. Cubical Services has an enthusiastic, professional atmosphere. This means that we are very driven and friendly with our clients and our work is always professional. We are a family of believers; people who truly and passionately believe in the purpose of Cubical Services and in the vision we have.
How do you create a community?
To answer this, we must first define what a community is: I like to explain it as a group of people who complete each other through www.cpmagazine.net

property management, event planning, optimization tenant mixes, and more. The planned grand launch is for September, so mark your calendars, and we will be more than happy to see you there. You are more than welcome to pass by. You can learn more on the website: www.soapboxkw.com We have also been working on planning and launching our first industry specific incubation program which will be related to the creative and media industry, focusing on content creation, where we they will take on about 25 entrepreneurs who wish to start their businesses in the media industry. These entrepreneurs will be offered all non-core services including offices and workspaces, intensive technical and entrepreneurial training for world-known brands, all business services such as book-keeping, legalities, IT Support and more. Other initiatives we are working on relate to research and statistics, plus another project related to creating greater entrepreneurial impact on a shorter term basis in which we are working with Kuwait Economic Society. And of course, last but certainly not least, we are preparing for the 4th edition of our beloved Fikra Program. different methods and services that serve each other’s needs. We know that if we want to create or develop a specific community in a particular industry, we need to first identify who are the current players, highlight what their needs are and what are the gaps that need to be filled and served. Then we divide and organize them and find entrepreneurs to serve and fill these gaps. Together, they create a community.
Tell us more about the Fikra program.
Entrepreneurship as a subject, and the SME industry in general, have both recently grasped the spotlight. Many people are still learning about entrepreneurship, SMEs, what incubators and venture capitals are, terminologies, definitions and concepts, and so on. With this, the private and government sectors in Kuwait are still working together to clarify what are the roles the government should take on, and what are the roles the private sector should take on to ensure that they complete each other in an efficient and effective manner to achieve their common vision. Another point is that an entrepreneur’s journey is a race against time. So as the industry is a new booming industry, it is taking time to digest processes and procedures. There are many great initiatives being proposed that we are waiting to see implemented.
Under the kind patronage of H.E. Khaled Al Roudan, Minister of Commerce and Industry, Fikra Program is a free intensive 6-month training program dedicated to providing aspiring entrepreneurs with the tools they need to start their own businesses. The program provides many benefits such as training, idea enhancement, networking opportunities, comprehensive business planning, investment opportunities, one on one mentorship, GCC expansion opportunities, media exposure and much more to help the entrepreneurs launch their businesses. Fikra Program 3rd Edition was proudly supported by Ministry of State for Youth Affairs, The National Fund for SME Development, Al-Hamra Real Estate Company, Ali Abdulwahab Al-Mutawa Commercial Company, Gulf Bank, Markaz Financial Center, Al Sayer Group - Lexus, and Grand Cinemas and is managed by Cubical Services Business Incubator. Fikra Program 4th Edition will launch in October 2018 and we invite aspiring entrepreneurs to be a part of Fikra Program by applying on our website www.fikraprogram.com
On the business side, what has proved to be the hardest part of running a business incubator?
How many startups have benefited from the Fikra program so far?
As an incubator, we deal with entrepreneurs, and entrepreneurs are always passionate people. Our role is to execute their passions and to execute these passions without obstacles and limitations, the law needs to be more flexible. Entrepreneur ideas are often creative, meaning they are new and innovative and may not exist yet in the current market. If it takes three years to digest a new concept and idea, the enthusiasm of these entrepreneurs will die down.
Fikra Program, 1st, 2nd and 3rd editions combined, accepted 45 business ideas, provided 57 training sessions and trained 76 entrepreneurs. The 3rd edition received over 350 applications in which 15 unique business ideas were selected. We are proud that following the 3rd edition of Fikra Program, which ended in April 2018, over 40% of the participating entrepreneurs have successfully established their own businesses.
Are there some success stories from Cubical Services that you’re particularly proud of?
What are your future plans?
What are the hardest things about running Cubical Services?
To begin with, we believe that the ideas of entrepreneurs are their own property and therefore, do not disclose our clients nor their ideas, as that is their own personal success. I am proud of Cubical Services, our team and their success in helping people. An incubator’s business model is not a usually a profitable one, therefore the drive of our team comes from purpose and impact, and our purpose is to enhance the economy and ecosystem by utilizing driven entrepreneurs. Our team, including myself, enjoys helping people follow their passions and seeing them succeed. Indeed, no amount can be given for the feeling of an entrepreneur stating that without you, without Cubical Services, their dreams would have not happened.
What are some of the projects you are working on?
As mentioned above, Cubical Services promise complete confidentiality to all of our clients. However, we are working on different projects that have been in the pipeline of each department and division; each collaborating with different parties and each having different strategic alliances. One project we are working on is the development of The Soapbox in partnership with The Promenade, which is a new and unique retail incubator and our first pilot project of many more to come falling under the real-estate service of bridging the gap between landlords and entrepreneurs through 22
JULY 2018
At the beginning of Cubical Services’ growth, the team sat down to draw the path and direction in which Cubical Services will follow. We divided our vision path into three eras, each of which consist of seven years, each of which are mid-term ambitions of which each have their own objectives. Each mid-term ambition guides us towards our vision while keeping us focused on our mission and purpose. With the help and the strength of the team, these mid-term ambitions were made possible and the goals for the first era, which ended in 2017, were achieved. Looking to the future we have the goals for the second era, ending in 2024, which we are currently working for, and further down the journey are the goals set for 2031. The goals of 2024 include mid-term ambitions such as to: A. Enhance the company's position and to maximize our operations. B. Diversify the sources of income and the ability of the Kuwaiti market. C. Extend the operation of the company to sub-regional markets including Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia; and then expand further to regional markets such as Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, and Morocco; and D. Enter into four new sectors in addition to the services sector: Creative, Environment (green energy), Technology and Investment, and Education. The team is well on the way and 2018 has been a great starting point for 2024 goals and a smooth and exciting continuation of the first era.

“Being connected in everything is a big part of my life philosophy”
Sara Niroobakhsh is inspired by many things, from Persian proverbs to tribal traditions. Her childhood in southern Iran features heavily in her work along with the concepts of body, movement, time and space. So what’s next for the Canadabased artist? ‘Improving,’ she says, ‘is always the best plan.’

Please introduce yourself to our readers: I’m Sara Niroobakhsh, originally from southern Iran, a Toronto-based visual artist. I have been working as a painter, photographer and video artist since 2005.
Tell us about your education: I hold a MA from the Art University of Tehran and a BA in Graphic Design. I’m now studying Master of Fine Art in the School of Art Institute of Chicago.
What was it like growing up in Iran? I was born and raised in the southwest of Iran, in a place called Khuzestan, which borders Iraq and the Persian Gulf. It’s a multicultural home for Persians, Arabs and different tribes so many of my childhood friends and family members spoke different languages. I spent the hottest summer on the planet and shortest winter there and am now experiencing the complete opposite in Canada. My father was a manager in an oil company so I was lucky to reap the benefit of all the facilities such as summer camps, good schools etc. I have lots of pictures in my mind; memories of port cities like Abadan or Genaveh and Persian Gulf when we were there for shopping, seeing ancient sites and Ziggurats like Shush, also visiting my eldest aunt with all the families for the holidays in Haft Tappeh.
What are your favourite childhood memories? I used to go the central library at the company club, reading books and enjoying beautiful garden views out of the large windows. My grandpa also had a big library in his house that had been organized based on the height and age of the books. I remember always climbing up the bookshelves to discover the bigger novels which weren’t necessarily for a child to read. When I finished secondary school, I could have finished most of the novels written by well-known authors.
How and when did your interest in art develop and when did you begin to take it seriously? I was about to go to high school when I met my father‘s friend’s daughter who was studying graphic design. For me, that art was all about book covers and illustrations and that meeting opened up a new sight to another world. But after graduation I realized that these arts kept my mind and ideas too limited so I started to join other classes at grad schools and explored more about other media. I learned that art can help me cope through difficult situations and be a voice to share my story to the world. I chose fine art when I found other fields no longer suited me when I was at grad school.
You are quite versatile in what you do, how would you best describe yourself? My tendency to adapt to different formats as an artist is one of my greatest strengths and I am yearning to unfold and flourish as my practice grows. I always explore other things outside of my realm of comfort. There are many media to use in art and endless things to learn which drive me toward creativity, because all of us have our own strengths to contribute. When I have an idea I study for the best medium to describe it. There are lots of possibilities to create an artwork that are both passionate 26
JULY 2018
and creative, and therein lies the versatility of art. Art is so complex, and so are our lives.
Where do you take your inspiration from? From an anthropological perspective my work has been heavily influenced by numerous stories, mythologies and Persian proverbs, passed from generation to generation. My greatest inspiration, however, is rooted in the folkloric practices and tribal traditions that stem from a legacy of the matriarchs in my family.
What are some of your favourite materials? Since my art is primarily social commentary that reflects the traditional social norms that repress women from leaving the home, I like to present these activities as performance art. As a Middle Eastern woman, I have always been interested in expanding boundaries and working with the female form, since it has become controversial in Iran. Working in this field and challenging the concepts of body, movement, time and space will help me to create works which are mostly about these concepts. I love to capture photos or shoot videos from those moments and sometimes I paint them as well.
Can you tell our readers about your recent project? For my last project, I invited artists from around the world to record themselves in a joyous sound that is known in the Middle East as the Zaghrouta. The project is an interactive video art installation. As the audience walks by the exhibit, the sensor will be connected to the installation so that visitors will become a part of the art show as they hear the celebratory cry. Just like the clapping of hands at the end of a Broadway play, the Zaghrouta has the same connotation. The project exhibited last year at the CICA Museum and won Visual Artists Creation Projects grant from Ontario Arts Council this year in 2018. The curator of this project is Mahmoud Obaidi who is a leading Iraqi Toronto-based artist and we are currently working with the curator of a public gallery to launch the new phase of the project in 2019 in Canada.
Tell us about your life and how living in Canada changed you so far? I moved to Canada in 2014. Since I have extensive knowledge of Arabic and Iranian art/culture I was given the opportunity to work as a curator. Working as a curator, I was able to build relationships with over twenty Middle Eastern artists by mentoring and consulting them in numerous projects which led them to develop successful careers in galleries and private viewing events in Canada, Lebanon and United Arab Emirates. Then I was invited to work as a juror in Ontario Arts Council for Art Professionals Artist of Colours grant this year. Now, as I mentioned, I’m working on my project, Zaghroutah. I believe moving to Canada has developed a new perspective in my artistic journey and opened up a world of opportunities and collaborations with other professionals.
What has been your proudest moment so far? That's a great question! I always feel proud when I look back and see the massive changes I’ve made in my life. But my proudest achievement so far is redefining
what success means to me. After I moved to Canada, a lot of my perspectives on life and the values I wanted to take forward with me stood out. Since then, it’s been a bit of a journey with my art as I shift it to have it correlate with who I am and how I can contribute and communicate with the world through art that feels honest to me. Out of everything I've accomplished, my proudest moment was when I was admitted to School of Art Institute of Chicago which has always been my dream school in the world.
What are your plans for the future? That future is now here. I’d like to be doing what I’m doing now - that is, enjoying my work, working hard and contributing to the best of my abilities. Of course, improving always is the best plan.
What message would you give to young aspiring artists? Often the artists who are very successful don’t have much flexibility. So, widen your boundaries by learning a foreign language and meeting new people. Do multiple tasks and do things that have nothing to do with art and leave your comfort zones in your studio. Because there
are so many things in life that have nothing to do with art but have everything to do with art. Don’t worry about making a lot of money and exhibiting your works everywhere. Rather, concentrate on what you are trying to contribute to the world with your art.
What is your motto in life? Life is led by those who put in their best. It’s really important for me to be engaged in everything, from all the tasks that I have to do, to my art and everything that I do for fun. Being connected in everything is a big part of my life philosophy.
Your message for us at CP magazine: I would like to thank you for providing me the opportunity to talk. I want to deliver a message, especially to all the immigrant artists, to trust themselves, to be engaged and do their best, and not to underestimate their own capacity to build the life and the world that they want.

6 Days Of Luxury In
Istanbul
Exploring Both Sides Of The City
For our summer vacation this year, we decided to visit Istanbul – the meeting point of two continents and a gateway between the east and the west. The city is known for its history and diverse culture and cuisines. With the Bosphorus Strait running through the city, dividing the European part of the city from the Asian part, Istanbul offers a taste of two continents.
28
JULY 2018
Arriving in Istanbul We had a smooth flight to Istanbul, and arrived at Sabiha Gokcen airport in good time. We passed through the security process quickly, perhaps because we had our e-Visas with us already. Once we were out of the airport, we just had to figure out the best way to get to our first hotel, Shangri-La Bosphorus. After some quick research, we realised that as a family of four with luggage, the easiest way to get there was by taxi. The taxi cost us 180 Liras for all of us, and the drive took us about 1 hour 50 minutes, but it would have been much quicker were we not traveling during rush hour.
Planning our trip When we set about planning our trip, we decided that it would be interesting to travel to Istanbul during Ramadan. Ramadan this year fell in June, which meant we could fit in the most perfectly timed trip, during the last week of the holy month. So we booked our trip for the 7th June to the 12th June, avoiding the summer travel rush, and leaving just before the busy Eid Al-Fitr holiday celebrations. Though our trip was short, we decided to make the most of Istanbul, and see as much of it as we possibly could. Rather than booking just one hotel, we booked accommodation in two different locations: one hotel in the heart of the city, and one alongside the Bosphorus River. We thought that this way, we’d have the chance to experience two sides of Istanbul, and make our trip a little more varied. When booking our flights, we opted to fly to Sabiha Gokcen airport, purely because we had already passed through the Ataturk airport a couple of times on our previous travels, and visiting a new airport made landing even more exciting. www.cpmagazine.net

The beds were incredibly comfortable, and the room was more than spacious enough for a family of four. It had everything we could have needed and more, including high-speed internet and a desk, which came in handy when we needed to check emails or do some last minute research about our destination. There was a beautiful black marble bathroom, with both a shower and a bath, a heated floor, and complimentary toiletries. Once we had finished getting to know our room and marvelling at the views, we decided to go and explore the rest of the hotel’s facilities. The health club consisted of a swimming pool, a gym, and Jacuzzis, all of which were open until 10pm, so there was plenty of time to make the most of these facilities after a busy day out. The indoor heated pool seemed like the perfect place to relax. The ceiling was painted with clouds, and on the walls were paintings of Turkey’s countryside. And for those more keen on relaxing than swimming, there were loungers dotted around the poolside. For the ultimate relaxation session, there was CHI, The Spa, which offered a whole range of different spa treatments, inspired by Asian healing philosophies. As for food and drink, the hotel had an all-day dining venue, IST TOO, a Cantonese Restaurant, Shang Palace, and the Lobby Lounge, which served breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea.
The perfect stay at Shangri-La Bosphorus As we approached the hotel we were thrilled to see that we’d chosen a hotel with such amazing views of the Bosphorus Strait. We were so impressed with the hotel’s surroundings that we’d almost forgotten to step inside. Once we entered the hotel, we were blown away once again. Istanbul might be a city of history, but this hotel was a modern oasis, with the diversity of the city represented in the mix of European, Asian and Turkish designs. We were definitely looking forward to spending two nights here. We booked the Deluxe Bosphorus Room with an extra bed for the kids, and we definitely weren’t disappointed. Before we’d even taken a look at our room, we were marvelling at the view over the Bosphorus from our floor-to-ceiling window. Eventually we tore ourselves away from the window to explore the room a bit more. The window meant that the room had a good amount of natural light, and for evenings, there were black out curtains. 30
JULY 2018
The IST TOO dining venue offered a range of dishes including Mediterranean and Asian cuisine. There was also a Japanese Sushi bar here. But when we asked where the hotel suggested for dinner, they recommended Shang Palace, the hotel’s signature restaurant. We were told by the front desk that this restaurant served the best and most authentic Chinese-Cantonese cuisine in Istanbul, and having dined there, we definitely agree. Not only was the food delicious, but the restaurant’s atmosphere was perfect.

After we’d spent a few hours resting and exploring the hotel, we decided to venture out for the day. We had arrived fairly early in the day, so we were still able to fit in almost a whole day out after we’d checked in. We walked to Kabatas metro station, which took around fifteen minutes, but on the way we stopped to try some of the street food on offer: chestnuts and fresh juice. From Kabatas, we got the train to Sultanahmet. We visited Istanbul’s beautiful and impressive Blue Mosque, which was built between 1609 and 1616, as well as Hagia Sophia – an imperial
mosque that has been turned into a museum. Part of experiencing a new place is experiencing the local food, so we made the most of the street food throughout the day, snacking on things like fresh corn. We also stopped for a delicious lunch at Firez Kebap House. After this we headed back to the hotel, where we dined at the SHANG Palace restaurant.
Our second day out, and an exciting invitation After a comfortable night’s rest at Shangri-La, we set off early for a day out in Istanbul. Once again, we got the metro, but this time to Grand Bazaar, where we spent some time shopping. We browsed souvenir shops, and bought some dried figs, some jewellery and some souvenirs to take home. Once we had completed our shopping trip, we visited the Topkapi Palace Museum. The palace had previously been home to Ottoman sultans, before they moved to Dolmabahçe Palace, so you can imagine the grandeur that awaited us inside. We spent a while taking in the amazing architecture, and learning about the history of the palace, before heading back to the hotel. www.cpmagazine.net

An Iftaar Dinner at Çiragan Palace Kempinski
That evening we were invited for a tour of the Çiragan Palace Kempinski, and for Iftaar dinner at their Bosphorus Grill Restaurant. The restaurant served both international and Turkish dishes, with lots of seafood on offer, and all of it looked amazing. We were delighted not just with our food, but also with the beautiful views of the Bosphorus bridge. We enjoyed the evening with our friend, Cansu Bas, who was the Palace’s Assistant Public Relations Managers. Cansu also revealed to us the Palace’s plans to introduce a ‘Sultan’s Dinner.’ The idea behind the Sultan’s Dinner is that it will transport guests back in time using the tastes and flavours of the Ottoman era. With the banquet being presented in the Palace’s Ottoman Hall, the taste, presentation and surrounding couldn’t be more authentic, and by the sounds of it, guests really will feel like Sultans. 32

Our last few hours in Bosphorus That morning we had to check out of the ShangriLa. We were sad to leave, but excited to spend the next few days in the heart of Istanbul’s city centre, at the Movenpick hotel. After we’d had our last breakfast at Shangri-La, we made the most of the morning by heading out on the Bosphorus tour. We said goodbye to the area in style, as we cruised along the Bosphorus Strait, taking in the beautiful views for the last time. www.cpmagazine.net

high-speed internet throughout the hotel, but as it were, we were too busy enjoying our trip to think about work! The bathroom was elegantly designed, with everything we could need, including a combined bathtub and shower, and complimentary toiletries. By booking a suite, we had access to the Skyline Club Lounge on the 20th floor, so of course we had to see what it was like. The lounge had amazing views over the city and the Bosphorus, even better than the views from our suite window. We could even see the islands and the Topkapi Palace. The lounge also served complimentary refreshments and snacks all day long for executive floor and suite guests, so we were able to replenish ourselves and relax before the rest of the day. After we’d relaxed in the Skyline Club Lounge for a while, we decided to explore the rest of the hotel. We quickly found the wellness area, where there was everything you could possibly need to stay fit and healthy during your travels, and/or relax after a long day. The gym was fully equipped with all the latest machines, and to help you keep your energy levels high, there was even a vitamin bar serving fresh juices, healthy drinks and light snacks. For relaxing, there was an indoor pool, heated to 27 degrees, and saunas, Jacuzzis and steam rooms for the ultimate spa experience. There was also a whole range of spa treatments to choose from and a team of friendly and professional massage therapists on site.
Checking in to Mövenpick Hotel Istanbul Later that day, we checked in to our next hotel, the Mövenpick Hotel Istanbul, on 4. Levent. It took us no time at all to find the hotel, it was centrally located in Istanbul’s business and shopping district and there was a metro station right next to it. When we stepped into the lobby we paused to take in the elegant and modern design of the hotel, before being greeted by friendly and professional staff. We checked in and were shown to our Junior Suite, where we would stay for 3 nights. The Suite was light and spacious, with a comfortable King size bed, and a separate living area, so there was space for all four of us. Our suite was fairly high up, so we spent a while taking in the views of the city from our window. Had we been traveling for business, we’d have made much more use of the large desk and work space area, and the 34

When it came to food and drink, we were spoilt for choice. There was the AzzuR Restaurant where we could go for a complimentary buffet breakfast, or for a Mediterranean lunch or dinner. As if that wasn’t enough, the BarAdoX had a delicious snack menu, a range of exotic cocktails and an inviting lounge to relax in. Then for sweet treats, there was GourmeT, which sold homemade cakes, chocolate, ice cream and sweet souvenirs to take home. After we’d discovered all this, we realised we still had half a day left to see some of Istanbul’s city centre, so we left the hotel, promising ourselves that we’d try out some of the facilities later on.
A relaxed afternoon at Taksim Square We hopped on the metro and headed to Taksim Square for the afternoon, to see the Republic Monument, and get a taste of life in Istanbul’s centre. Whilst the Republic Monument is an iconic historical monument, marking the start of the
Turkish Republic in 1923, the Square actually lies at the heart of the city’s modern sector. There were hundreds of shops around the Square, and just as many restaurants serving all kinds of different foods. It seemed to be one of the most diverse areas of Istanbul, with so many different cuisines, and so many different shops selling just about anything you can imagine. The smell of the many restaurants caused our stomachs to start rumbling, so we stopped for lunch at the Gezzy Restaurant, which was situated in the hotel zone of Taksim Square. The restaurant seemed fairly popular, which we saw as a good sign, so we sat at one of the outside tables and soaked up the vibrant atmosphere whilst enjoying Turkish and seafood dishes.
After lunch we decided to walk off our meal, so we took a stroll down Istaqlal Street, which we had heard was a must for tourists. There were more shops to browse, and street performers dotted along the street, filling the bustling street with beautiful music and positive energy. It was the sort of place you could never get bored of, it seemed that almost all of the city’s tourist attractions could be reached by foot from Taksim Square and Istaqlal Street. Had we not been so tired from our busy day, we would have carried on exploring, but we decided to head back to the hotel to rest, relax and get ready for tomorrow’s adventures.

Exploring Bursa The next morning, after breakfast, we planned a day trip to Bursa. We took the metro to Yenikapi station, and from there we got on a ferry which took us to Bursa. The ferry ride took around two hours, but the experience of crossing the Sea of Marmara was exciting enough that the time flew by, and before long we were in Bursa. From the ferry terminal we took a taxi to Bursa City. After the long journey we were excited to see what the city had to offer, and we started off with a shopping trip at the Kent Meydani Mall. This modern shopping centre is a hub of activity, with shops for everyone and every style. So we spent a while souvenir shopping, and then explored the surrounding area of Osmangazi. Bursa is the birthplace of Iskender kebaps, so we decided to stop for lunch at Uludağ Kebapçısı Cemal Cemil Usta, which we’d heard many claim was the best Iskender in Turkey. The food was delicious and the staff were very friendly. The meal had given us the chance to rest our legs, but we still had a few more things planned for the day. Next on our list of things to see was the Green Mosque, which was a beautiful sight to behold, and a mosque with so much history. We admired the green-tiled mosque inside and out, appreciating the architecture, and the rich colours and textures used throughout the interior. After seeing the Green Mosque, we decided to visit the Emir Sultan Mosque, a smaller mosque but one with just as much character and history. The original Emir Sultan Mosque dates back to the 14th century, but the mosque that stands today has been rebuilt a few times since then. The design of the Emir Sultan Mosque is of a baroque style, with intricate details on the ceilings and walls. This style reflects the fashionable designs of the 19th century Ottoman Empire. After this we made our way back to the ferry terminal, and started the long journey back to our hotel. On our way back we stopped for an easy dinner in the Sultanahmet area, at the Ikram kebab house. Then it was back to the hotel to enjoy the facilities and get some rest. 36

Our last day in Istanbul Monday was our last day in Istanbul and we were a little sad that our trip had flown by so quickly, but we chatted about our experiences so far over breakfast and resolved to make the most of our last full day. We planned to meet with our friend, Paul in Sultanahmet, who had retired from Kuwait and was now living in Istanbul. Not only was it a nice reunion, but it was also good to meet with a local who knew the area. Paul took us to his favorite restaurant for lunch, The Cozy Garden, which turned out to be a delightful French and Mediterranean restaurant. As the name suggests, the restaurant also had the option to sit outside in the ‘cozy garden’ – a charming garden with colorful umbrellas hanging above the tables, adding both color and shelter to the area. The Cozy Garden Restaurant was in such a nice location that we thought we’d go for a walk around the area after lunch. The neighborhood was quieter than some of the areas we’d visited, with just a few hotels dotted around, so it definitely felt like a bit of a hidden gem. We couldn’t leave without trying at least one more bit of street food, so decided to give the midye dolma (mussels) a try. We had seen the mussels sold on almost every street corner, so it seemed only right to give this snack a try before the end of our trip. Midye dolma was a simple snack, made from mussels mixed together with spicy rice and lemon juice, but it was a delicious combination of flavors. That evening we went back to Taksim Square, to enjoy the busy hustle and bustle of the tourist hub once more. We explored a few of the streets that we’d been too tired to venture down before, and of course we did a bit more souvenir shopping. We bought some Turkish sweets to take home from one of the most popular stores, and ended the evening with a classic donner kebab.
Leaving Istanbul On Tuesday 12th June we had our last breakfast at the Mövenpick Hotel, and we savored every mouthful. Our time in the historic city of Istanbul had come to an end and it was time to pack our bags and get the taxi back to the airport. We had the most amazing time in Istanbul, and by staying in two different locations we definitely feel like we experienced the city properly. We were able to visit the popular tourist attractions, as well as some of the more local areas. The trip was without a doubt the perfect combination of action-packed sight-seeing days and relaxing hotel evenings. We couldn’t have been happier with our hotel choices, both the Shangri-La and Mövenpick Hotel had everything we could have needed, and more, to make the beginnings and ends of our days as easy and relaxing as possible. Though our trip was fairly short, we fit as much in as we could, and we’re looking forward to returning to the beautiful city at some point in the future. www.cpmagazine.net

‘I love being able to see that big life change’ It was Awatif AlSabah’s own life struggles that led her to pursue a career in helping others. Now a dedicated life coach, Awatif believes we all deserve to be happy and insists you don’t need to suffer a trauma to seek help.

Please introduce yourself to our readers. I’m master life coach, Awatif AlSabah.
Tell us about your education. I studied English literature in Kuwait University. I also studied life coaching and master life coaching which covers NLP (Neuro-linguistic programming), relationships development and hypnosis.
What is life coaching? Why would you ever need a life coach? Life coaching is a tool that helps people to evolve in life and change their negative attitude to a positive approach to give them confidence and self fulfillment.
What inspired you to be who you are today? My inspiration was my own life struggle. I got married at a very young age and became a mother so young. I wanted some advice but did not find the correct advice to help me in my youth and immaturity.
When did you establish Pure Soul? Tell us, how did it all start? From my life struggles I began to seek more books and courses to help me make my life easier. Then I found out about coaching and I thought it was a job I would really love to do every day; to see people transforming from unaware to more aware and to become happier in their lives. That’s when I established Pure Soul, two years ago.
What were some of the challenges you faced when you first started? My first challenge was earning the trust of my clients so I could give them a relaxed environment enabling them to feel vulnerable and to open up about their own lives.
What are the biggest misconceptions about life coaching? That’s an amazing question! The misconception is that you have to suffer from a trauma to seek help, which is the biggest cliché ever.
What are some of the tools that you use during your coaching sessions? In my coaching session we go through a journey of self discovery to establish the limiting beliefs that stop us from going forward in life. Then we check all the values and the limitations and correct them to my client’s advantage.
When you look back at your coaching history with clients, what are the common issues or goals that they raise? The common issue is self discovery and relationship struggles.
What is the best thing you have ever heard from a client? The best thing is the self discovery and courage to let go of fear and change their life for their own benefit.
What do you love the most about your profession? I love being able to see that big life change.
What advice would you give about finding the right life coach? They must feel comfortable with the coach. The coach must listen to them without judgment and accept them as they are.
Tell us more about the Women Circle Initiative. The Women Circle was founded by me and coach, Fabiana Santana. It meets once a month to give women support, of all nationalities, and to contribute to society by helping women change from the inside first, then the outside. We tackle different aspects each month and we open the circle for all women to share or listen to the different stories. This gives them the feeling of love and support and makes their life easier. We made it free of charge because we want every woman to get the benefit.
How can we manifest love, peace and joy in our lives? We can manifest love and joy by living in the now, raising our awareness and accepting life.
Our readers would love to know your motto in life: I deserve to be happy.
What according to you are the three keys to success? Giving yourself time, every single day, to meditate. Learn something new. Give gratitude.
What is your favourite travel destination? Italy. It’s a beautiful country and I speak Italian.
What would you advise people who suffer from stress? You can reduce stress by meditation and exercise. Also, slow down your hectic schedule by allowing yourself some me-time every day as a reward for your hard work during the day.
Your message for us at CP Magazine: Keep up your genuine intuition to spread valuable knowledge. Continue being different from others - you’ve earned it! 40

SUMMER ON THE LAKES
S
ummer holidays don´t have to mean sea and sand. Lake holidays attract people who are seeking resort-style living in a setting where natural resources, wildlife and a serene environment are important. We pick breaks amid mountains and by tranquil lakes to suit lovers of long hikes, high-energy activity or just dreamy upland vistas. This month we travel from Lake Pichola in the exotic India, to the chic Lake Silvaplana in Switzerland, the heart of Argentina´s Lake District, the Moraine Lake in Canada, to the magic Lake Bunyonyi in Uganda. Five wonderful spots for a relaxing lakeside retreat! And the best bit… these hotel rooms have got some of the best views in the world!
A FLOATING PALACE ESCAPE IN THE MIDDLE OF LAKE PICHOLA Where: Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur, India
This 270-year-old white marble palace floats like a mirage in the middle of Lake Pichola and looks dazzling from the shore, making it one of the most private and exclusive hotels in the world. Only hotel guests can visit, making it an Instagrammers dream. Reached by a short boat ride, it was built as a summer retreat by Maharana Jagjit Singh who ruled Jaipur in the 17th century. It has undergone major refurbishment, which has gone a long way to restore its palatial feel with marble floors and rich furnishings, making it incredibly opulent and ideal for an unforgettable Indian escape. The hotel is home to 65 beautiful rooms with original royal features and 18 spectacular suites, including The Grand Presidential Suite for those who truly wish to splash out. There are a number of restaurants to choose from and those really looking to ‘truly push the boat out’ can enjoy a special evening aboard the royal barge ‘Gangaur’, equipped with seven rowers, private dance performers and private chef. This boat was purchased by the hotel after it was refurbished for the James Bond film Octopussy, in which the boat and hotel famously featured, and is ideal for sunset drinks, private dinner or cookery class. https://taj.tajhotels.com/en-in/taj-lake-palace-udaipur/

SAILING IN THE ALPS!
Where: Suvretta House, St Moritz, Switzerland Traditionally a winter destination, many don’t think of visiting St Moritz in the summer months. Once the snows melt and temperatures rise, Switzerland's beautiful Upper Engadine becomes the ideal spot for an action-packed summer holiday. The Lakes of St Moritz are beautiful all year round, but summer is the perfect time for sailing enthusiasts. Grand Dame ‘Palace of the Mountains' Suvretta House is minutes from the magnificent Lake Silvaplana, which lies at an altitude of 1,731 metres above sea level and is the largest natural lake in The Alps over 1,000 metres. Stretching up to 3.1km long in some areas, Lake Silvaplana is excellent for water sports and, thanks to its size, never feels crowded. Sailors and windsurfers will delight in the legendary Majola wind on Lake Silvaplana – this is a famously strong downhill wind which sometimes reaches between 3 to 6 on the Beaufort Scale and provides the perfect sailing conditions for beginners and the more experienced. The highlight of the St. Moritz sailing season is the Swiss, European and sometimes World Sailing Championships. Suvretta House can arrange professional sailing instructors to take guests out on the lake to enjoy some of the freshest mountain air and cleanest waters in the world. www.suvrettahouse.ch
IN THE HEART OF ARGENTINA’S LAKE DISTRICT
Where: Llao Llao Hotel, San Carlos de Bariloche, Patagonia, Argentina Backed by the Andes mountains and surrounded on three sides by Lakes Nahuel Huapi and Moreno, the Llao Llao occupies a spectacular position atop a hill in the Argentine Lake District. Llao Llao is one of the most recognizable hotels in the world. Combining its rich history dating back to 1938 with a modern wing built in 2007, this Canadian-style resort is a destination lodge perfect for any season. A choice of three restaurants and a lobby bar offers everything from Patagonian lamb to the most delicate international cuisine. Follow in the footsteps of Barack Obama and his family by enjoying Patagonian specialities at the Moreno Lake Bar which offers spellbinding views of Mount Tronador and the lake. Enjoy the classical Llao Llao Tea, served overlooking the spectacular view of the hotel gardens and the breathtaking Nahuel Huapi Lake, and the evening happy hour, replete with relaxed ambiance and lovely surroundings. Guests also have access to the marina, beach, fitness centre, heated indoor and outdoor infinity swimming pools, a thoroughly modern spa offering excellent treatments for men and women alike, and also a stunning 18-hole golf course which provides all the necessary services for an incomparable golfing experience. www.llaollao.com

OVERLOOKING THE MESMERIZING MORAINE LAKE Where: Moraine Lake Lodge, Canada
Barely 9 miles from Lake Louise, and the Trans-Canada Highway, the road to Moraine Lake Lodge is only open from May through October (and happens to be a great spot for grizzly sightings!). Once there, the views of the turquoise, glacially-fed lake and the Valley of the Ten Peaks are unforgettable. Starting point for hikes into Larch Valley and Sentinel Pass are some of Banff National Park’s best (ablaze in autumn when larch needles are golden). The resort has a refreshingly unpretentious vibe, and now oddly-endearing late80s aesthetic from when it was first designed and built. The best rooms are in the lower level, deluxe cabins with river rock, wood-burning fireplaces and private balconies. All accommodations come without telephones or TVs – and cell service is blissfully patchy, with signals interrupted by Mount Babel. The Walter Wilcox Dining Room highlights specials including local deer and buffalo. This beautiful mountain retreat combines a natural approach with modern comforts for the ultimate Canadian escape. Here tap water comes straight from the mineral well and electricity is generated on-site plus there are no televisions or telephones to distract. There are however two excellent gourmet restaurants and a plethora of adventure activities to help you really make the most of your time away. www.morainelake.com
THE BIRDNEST EXPERIENCE
Where: BirdNest Resort, Lake Bunyonyi, Uganda Lake Bunyonyi in South Western Uganda is believed to be one of the deepest lakes in Africa, probably even the most beautiful lakes in the continent as well, dotted with numerous islands and surrounded by terraced hills. It´s a perfect camp base for gorilla trekking in the nearby Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. BirdNest Resorts is the place to stay. The hotel is positioned at the shore of the lake, offering a spectacular view of these amazing surroundings. Activities offered include bird watching, boat trips, fishing, visits to hot springs, village visits, sailing and percussion workshops, just to name a few. Each room features a fireplace for the cold nights and a beautiful pool facing the lake. You can sit back and relax surrounded by the gorgeous scenary and countryside or partake in the ample cultural, natural and eco-tourism activities offered through the lodge. The hotel can organize relaxing day-trips in the local district to allow you to discover exclusive local sports and interact with the local people and nature. Enjoy a truly authentic Ugandan travel experience! www.birdnestatbunyonyi.com

VEGETARIAN
GONE WILD VEGGIE CANNELLONI
C
annelloni is a type of Italian pasta with a cylindrical shape. Fresh spinach and basil mixed with creamy, dreamy, easy-to-whip-up ricotta, stuffed into cannelloni pasta and coated in tomato sauce - what can be more satisfying than this recipe? I love this recipe as a freezing item as well. It’s easy, healthy and quick. PREPARATION: 1. First, make the tomato sauce. Heat the oil in a large pan and fry the
You will need: For the red tomato sauce: l 3 tbsp olive oil l 8 garlic cloves, crushed l 3 tbsp caster sugar l 2 tbsp white vinegar l 4 x 400g chopped tomatoes l Small bunch basil leaves For the filling: l 1kg spinach l 100g parmesan (or vegetarian alternative), grated l 3 x 250g ricotta l Large pinch grated garlic l 400g dried cannelloni For the topping: l 2 x 250g mascarpone l 3 tbsp milk l 85g parmesan (or vegetarian alternative), grated l 2 x 125g mozzarella 50

garlic for 1 min. Add the sugar, vinegar, tomatoes and some seasoning and simmer for 20 mins, stirring occasionally, until thick. 2. Add the basil and spread onto a shallow ovenproof dish. Set aside. 3. Make a sauce by beating the mascarpone with the milk until smooth, season, then set aside. 4. Put the spinach in a large colander and pour over a kettle of boiling water to wilt it. 5. When cool enough to handle, squeeze out the excess water. Roughly chop the spinach and mix in a large bowl with garlic, Parmesan and ricotta. Season well with salt and pepper. 6. Heat oven to 200C/180C. 7. Using a piping bag or plastic food bag with the corner snipped off, squeeze the filling into the cannelloni tubes. 8. Lay the tubes, side by side, on top of the tomato sauce and spoon over the mascarpone sauce. Top with Parmesan and mozzarella. 9. You can freeze this dish at this point by covering it up well with foil and plastic wraps. 10. Bake for 30-35 mins until golden and soft. Remove from oven and let it stand for 5 mins before serving.
You can get creative with the filling, adding whatever veggies your family love. I thought this classic filling would be a good start for those who haven’t tried eating or making cannelloni before. I love to add eggplants with the ricotta filling. Though this pasta can be baked directly with a sauce of choice, there are some types that need to be boiled before they are baked. Make sure you follow the instructions on the Cannelloni pasta you buy before cooking. Bon Appetite! Fact: The origin of Cannelloni dates back to around 1907. Cookie Dough Bites INGREDIENTS FOR THE COOKIE DOUGH: l 1.5 cups almond flour l 1.5 cups gluten free oat flour l 1/4 cup coconut oil l 1/4 cup maple syrup l 1 tsp vanilla powder INGREDIENTS FOR THE CARAMEL FILLING: l 2 cups firmly packed dates l 3 tbsp coconut oil l 3 tbsp almond butter l 1/2 tsp sea salt INGREDIENTS FOR THE CHOCOLATE TOPPING: l 45 grams cacao butter (this is 1/3 cup when melted) l 3 tbsp cacao powder l 3 tbsp maple syrup l Pinch of salt
METHOD: Start by mixing all the ingredients for the cookie dough in a food processor. You can also mix this in a bowl by using your hand or a spoon. l Line a small baking tray with baking paper and press this mixture down and even it out with the back of a clean spoon. Place this in the freezer while you make the caramel layer. l Pour all the ingredients for the salted caramel into a food processor and mix well until it makes a paste. Make sure the dates are pitted. l Pour the caramel layer over the cookie dough and spread the mix evenly across the base. This may be hard as date mixture is quite sticky. I used my hand for this and the back of a spoon. Place this in the freezer while you make the chocolate. l Place a small pan on very low heat and pour all the ingredients for the chocolate layer into the pan and allow it to melt while mixing it with a fork or a hand whisker. l Allow the chocolate to cool down a little and pour it over the caramel. Keep in the fridge for about 15 minutes for the chocolate to harden and slice whichever way you prefer. l

SUMMER LOOKS 2018 A fashion consulting session exclusively for CP readers with the multi-talented Paris based stylist Sabrina Thomas-Nelson. Lina Agabani Puch
“I have nothing to wear!”
A word to the wise…
Every year as the summer season rolls around, we all experience that inevitable moment where we stand in front of our closets and contemplate which outfits to recycle this year. You might also feel compelled to scroll through yet another fashion blogger’s Instagram feed in search of the latest trends and, of course, which of us hasn’t resentfully evaluated just how summer-ready our bodies are? Well, straight from Paris, the fashion capital, I’m here to alleviate some of that summertime pressure. After speaking with entrepreneur, stylist and fashion and luxury consultant, Sabrina Thomas-Nelson, I’ve ascertained that summer fashion doesn’t have to be so taxing this year, not on our wallets, nor on our self-esteem. In fact, this fashion connoisseur, with 15 years of experience under her belt, says there are ways to make this entire experience not just fun, but time efficient as well.
According to S.Thomas-Nelson, who earned a Masters at the renowned ESMOD France, an international fashion design and business school, anyone today can become a fashion blogger even without a background in fashion. This, she says, is due to the development of social networks, especially those picture heavy ones like Instagram and Pinterest, with the infamous #OOTD posts - Outfit of The Day. In her professional opinion, however, it’s important to not just focus on what a certain celebrity wears or what a certain brand puts out. A good fashion blog, she says, requires a great deal of research, an active work ethic and, of course, strong writing skills. S.Thomas-Nelson, who earned an MBA at CNAM Paris and California State University specializing in fashion management, teaches contemporary fashion, fashion marketing, and consults professional projects in schools and universities. ‘I work with many fashion schools and study the profiles of the younger generations over the years. Many can put together great ensembles, but when asked to give references, whether on designers, fashion trends or history, I’ve seen a big void and no solid base,’ she said.
Stop scrolling start looking… Having worked a lot on social studies, S.ThomasNelson finds that she’s very much influenced by none other than the streets! Basically, what people are wearing, as well as street style blogs from New York, to Tokyo, to Seoul, to Berlin. Her best advice is to not limit ourselves to online or paper content, but to also take note while out and about because it’s important to see clothes and trends in movement. ‘I would be walking past a girl sporting a certain look and I would think, that might suit me as well, she’s kind of like me, we have the same hips, the same chest size. The streets really are the best source of inspiration. One can’t blindly follow trends, it’s essential to take your morphology into account in order to pick the pieces which complement your figure, while keeping an open mind to new looks. The same applies when it comes to colours. You can pick the same colour, but in the tone which goes best with your skin. This is a big part of what I do in image consulting,’ she explained.

JULY 2018
Put your comfort first S.Thomas-Nelson is also inspired by fashion shows and trends put out by consulting agencies, many with which she works closely and which she says, create trends by studying what is called ‘l’air du temps’ - the current trends and perspectives, from politics and sensationalized news stories, to the weather, to sociology! She also works as a retail trainer for big brands where she’s in charge of teaching sales teams to better receive customers and meet their expectations. ‘Fashion is a lot of the time inspired by the youth, who today prioritize comfort. They want to simultaneously be fashionable and comfortable. After a long day of class or work, maybe one wants to get a drink with friends, or sit on the grass, so fashion is regaining its youthfulness from which we’re witnessing this need for comfort. Even those who want to be chic and wear couture can do so while being very comfortable, which wasn’t exactly the case before. Today, even in business settings, we’re seeing more and more of an American style, Californian comfort attire,’ she said.

What to look out for this summer
There are, as everyone knows, summer basics, just like with any other season, but with every season, some trends stick around, and others are reborn. So, without further ado, here are Sabrina Thomas-Nelson’s top picks for summer 2018:
1. A splash of colour
‘What’s hot this summer is colour. That much is obvious. Men and women alike are seeking colour. We saw lots of nude and beige last season, but this summer we’re looking at colours which pop with a 70s kind of spirit. From red, to violet, to yellow, to green, to orange, but mostly pink, even a pastel pink, or a baby pink, and we can find it on all different pieces.’
2. Flower Power
‘We’re looking at a lot of flower prints with a more bohemian spirit, and a romantic look for this season. Flowers on jackets and pants, flowers on embroidery, multiple flowers, big flowers, mini flowers, tropical flowers, we’re finding a lot of it.’
3. High Waist Shorts
‘Obviously it’s summertime, it’s hot outside, it’s sunny, maybe we’re off to the beach, so our legs are on display. We’re going for high waist light fabric shorts with belts, striped, as well as in denim. Speaking of denim, other than shorts, there’s also denim jackets.’
4. Flowy Pants
‘As for pants, we’re looking at flowy pants, mid-calf, showing off the shoes.’
5. Sneakers
‘As for shoes, we’re looking at sneakers. All brands have put out their ‘it’ trainers for the season, even luxury brands from Vuitton to Chloé have been influenced by street
wear. More and more, we’re associating trainers with both classic and casual silhouettes, not that platforms have completely gone away. Platforms remain etched in the 70s spirit and it’s important to remember that fashion is but an eternal reenactment.’
6. Plastic and metallic fabrics
‘You’ll also notice in many stores today the transparent plastic fabric in heels, boots, and in trench coats. It’s not very breathable but in light doses it works. While last year we saw a lot of glitter, this year we’re seeing more metallic fabrics as well, on skirts, jackets, in silver, in gold.’
7. Beachwear
‘We’re looking at espadrilles, loafers, straw weaved tote bags, and big hats which are very useful to protect one from the sun.’
8. Asymmetry
‘Rather than the Andalusian shoulder baring style, we’re looking at asymmetry making a comeback this season.’
9. Fanny Packs
‘There’s the Gucci fanny packs, but fanny packs in general are a big hit this summer. We're also wearing them asymmetrically over the shoulder across the body.’
10. Onesies
‘Onesies, from pants onesies, to shorts onesies, even overalls.’
Three looks, all occasions
Sabrina Thomas-Nelson has also put together three full summer looks; a Morning/Midday look, an After Work/Evening look, and a Soirée/Party look, exclusively for CP Magazine.
Morning/Midday Look Summer jacket with floral print, shawl collar, pockets and gold zippers. Tank top with lace straps. Skinny blue Jeans. Red leather fanny pack with 3 pockets and grain finishing. Gold wedge sandals. Gold necklace with multicolored pendants. 60

More about Sabrina Back in 2010, Sabrina Thomas-Nelson was featured in a list of 50 Women by Tentation magazine credited with shaking up France. In 2009, she created a new concept in France called Galerie THOMAS-NELSON based in central Paris. It functioned like an art gallery but for young fashion designers to put together displays – clothes, bags, jewelry – for varying durations. The project was open to the public and professionals alike – buyers, stylists, journalists, etc. and was quite a success, even taking home an award for entrepreneurship and innovation organized by the French Ministry of Youth and Sports. Today she’s working with a dynamic team to put together an updated version of the
concept, more adapted to the demands of the new markets in the fashion and luxury world, with a focus on media and services – she estimates a 2019 opening. She also continues to work with several French and international brands and agencies in numerous domains, from communication, to artistic direction, to marketing, to image and retail coaching, and is looking into possibly pursuing a doctorate degree. GO ORGANIC! Sonya Vajifdar
I
started this review with nothing in mind but experimenting with new skin care and makeup. Due to my strong advocacy in sustainable fashion and using organic materials to manufacture my fashion line, I just wanted to see what the fuss was about when it came to organic skin care. I am now a month into organic products and have reached the point of never going back. As a lay user there were many changes I found, especially after the first two weeks. Detox - and a heavy one - was what my body went though! I had not really researched much on the products being used so I was learning about them while using them and actually experiencing the effects for myself. I dabbled with a few organic and natural products for my face, hair and body. The term ‘organic’ refers to how an ingredient was farmed - it must be prepared and grown without pesticides, chemical fertilizers, growth hormones or antibiotics. A ‘natural’ ingredient is considered to be anything that’s a plant, mineral or animal by-product. I would compare it to food detox maybe, when you start eating healthily and your body goes through that uneasy low, drowsy feeling and then suddenly there is a boost of energy. For my skin, there was an initial breakout. Honestly, my skin has been extremely acne prone and has not been a good friend of mine, especially before important occasions! After the breakout settled, it was glowing central! The marks seem to be dying down as well. My hair, which has always been oily, has become fresher, less oily and just looks really healthy. There were a few interesting products and a few that just totally stood out for me. 62
JULY 2018
I am going to start with an organic online store, based in Dubai, called Balmessence. They explained in detail the products I was trying and the back stories on how the products were created. One brand I worked with from this store was Esse Probiotic Skincare. The cocoa exfoliator smells like chocolate and has this really moist feel for an exfoliator. The sensitive trial pack, which includes a face clenser and two hydrating and nourishing face creams, is a great introduction to organic products! Both of these products seemed extremely soothing, calm and mild on the skin. Then there was Tabitha, a brand from the UK. I just loved the owner’s story. When she was pregnant she was asked to use products with no chemicals. Being a hairdresser by profession, she questioned why she should stay away from chemicals only while pregnant. As a result, she created her own organic hair care line, starting with professional retailing only and then to salons and spas. She swears by two scents, amber rose and older citrus. The products I tried ranged from a hair cleanser, a four-in-one conditioner, and the very interesting Hair Oil that had an amethyst stone inside which helps blend up the oils! And now for my favourite from Balmessence - Living Nature’s Bee Venom Sheet Mask. I had to know more about this before I tried it! This 100% organic cotton sheet is infused with bee venom. Not being vegan, it is still completely ethical as no bees have been harmed nor have their stingers come off, as they secrete the venom on a glass which is scraped off, after which it goes through a cleansing process and, on being worn, gives the face a warm, soft tingling feel that stimulates collagen to plump your face. It’s recommended for brides the day before they marry, to get that fresh dewy look. When asked if there were going to be any more bee venom products added, the response from Living Nature was negative as they did not want to overwork their bees! Balmessence has also offered our readers in Dubai a 15% discount which lasts until 11th August 2018, using the code CPM15 at the check-out on their website www.balmessence.com. I have already placed my order! Shirly Conlon Organic Skincare sent me their Fountain of Youth Face
Cream as well as their Rosehip Oil. I love products that are organic; you feel them immediately. That was the case with Fountain of Youth - as well as their amazing fragrance! The Rosehip Oil (termed as the ‘miracle oil’), Carrot and Sea Buckthorn help repair sun damage and a Peruvian herb relaxes facial muscles giving an organic Botox effect. Fountain of Youth is the ultimate day/night face cream especially formulated with potent skin-loving botanical extracts to suit every skin type. Their other products look pretty interesting as well! Check them out at http:// shirleyconlonorganics.com Prtty Peaushun is a skin tightening cream for the face and body created by celebrity makeup artist Bethany Karlyn. I actually recommended this product to my family as well as I felt an instant response from my skin! This product is vegan, gluten free, fragrance free, paraben free and toxin free. We will also be running a contest with them shortly! Prtty Peaushun is available all over the world at stores and spas! All outlets are listed on http://www.prttypeaushun.com Another brand with focus on just one product is The Gentle Label who have chosen to have their products certified by the Soil Association, the UK’s leading body for organic certification, internationally-recognized for their very high standards. Try their ‘do-it-all’ balm. Derived from papaya, Pawpaw is a natural alternative to chemical exfoliants. It contains the enzyme papain which gently removes dead skin cells to allow new ones to surface, perfectly prepping skin for the antiinflammatory and wound-healing properties of Calendula, available online at the https://thegentlelabel.com Based in the US, Innersense was the first product I started my detox with. I was confused with the hair detox at the beginning though, as I did not know that the shampoos would not foam! Nor that even a little bit would clean the whole head! But the after effects - wow! The chemicals in regular shampoos strip us of our natural oils thus causing the head to secrete more, leading to an oily scalp. Organic products do not strip any oils so the first result I saw was that my hair looked cleaner for a longer period of time. I tried the Hydrating Hair Bath (winner of 2017 Allure best beauty award for natural sections), the Hydrating Cream Conditioner, The Sweet Spirit Leave-In Conditioner, the I Create Lift (my personal favourite) and the Hydrating Hair mask. I also loved the stay-in conditioner here and honestly started getting enquiries very soon about where these products were available, after I posted them online. I loved the directions on the back of the bottle, which tell you to take a deep breath and then use and to remember to appreciate your hair. I also love the story behind the name, all available on their website - https://innersensebeauty.com B’Atude from Hungary sent me my new favourite foaming and censing face wash! Honestly, I am obsessed! Not only does it absorb into the skin absolutely immediately but I have been unable to switch ever since. Again, all B’Atudes’ packaging is reusable and the brand has run a contest with us with the winner to be announced on our publishing date! This brand literally means - to be happy in the knowledge that you are honoring and freeing your mind, body and conscience because you have chosen something that is organic, natural and ethical.
I was lucky to have tried their body cream, eye cream and night antiaging cream and a creamy green tea facemask as well. Products are available on http://batude.com/batude-home All the way to Sweden now with True Organic of Sweden, starting with ‘All You Need Is Me’, an intensive cream for extra ordinary care. I liked this one best as it had so many functions to it. I saw visible effects on my lips although it can be used on almost every part of the body! I also tested the ‘Undercover Agent’, a natural deodorant. It’s made from citric acid, natural mineral salt, bicarbonate, ho leaf bestial oil and spree essential oil! I like the suggestion of the ‘Say Hello To The Glow’ pamphlet sent along with the products which lets us recreate a spa treatment at home with their ‘Sea Me’ mask. The ‘Face It’ serum helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles and helps to restore skin elasticity. These products range from 50 – 150 dollars and are all available at www.trueorganicofsweden.com The multiband store in UAE, Beautylicious, represents two other brands I tried – Eminence Organic Skincare and BCL. I can totally vouch for the Age Correcting Exfoliator. How great is it to have a natural age corrector and exfoliator all in one! That means you can use it as much as you

want and trust me, this one is definitely a product you will use more than once. I hope the ban on the manufacture of cosmetics containing 'microbeads' (tiny pieces of plastic found in face scrubs, toothpastes and shower gels) has come into force all over so people can buy more products like this! Actually all the products from Eminance have given me results quickly, which included the Neroli age corrective hydrating mist, the stone crop body lotion and the roseship and lemongrass repair balm. They use Stone Crop, which is good for hydrating for uneven skin tones; it helps to reduce the appearance of age spots and skin blotches. The other product tested from Beautylicious is BCL Critical Repair Cream. I am really having a go at this one as my feet are absolutely exhausted at the end of the day. This cream is supposed to instantly deliver intense moisture without the greasy feel. It relieves dry, itchy skin while nourishing and repairing the skin’s moisture barrier and healing and protecting against cracked skin, made specifically from Organic Arnica, Shea Butter and Argan Oil. Beautylicious specializes in brands that are globally inspired, innovative, unique, revolutionary, eclectic, contemporary, stylish and, most importantly, result-oriented. They can be found on www.beautylicious.com Neal’s Yard sent me a whole bunch of products and I was delighted to know they opened their doors in 1981 in Neal’s Yard, a once forgotten corner of Covent Garden, in the heart of central London, England. Their passionate belief that beauty should be natural, not synthetic, has won them an enormous amount of awards and they build their relationships through supporting organic farming, sustainable wild harvesting and fair trade programs. I don’t need to say more! The products I tested were the Frankincense and Mandarin shower cream which had a beautiful aroma and feels very rich on the body. The same for the Rosemary and Elderflower shower gel - I don’t even need perfume afterwards as the aroma stays quite a while on the skin! However, on the topic of deodorant, this one has to be my pick from the lot so far! The peppermint fragrance is really one for the books! I found all the antiaging products surprisingly rich and potent for natural products like the Anti-aging Frankincense intense cream, Frankincense intense serum and Frankincense intense eye cream, Rosehip seed oil, and antibacterial wash. What I really liked is they also give the consumer trial-time periods and say how long it will take to actually start showing on the skin. I found a Neal’s Yard store in the mall just opposite my house – DANGER! Although the prices may be slightly steep the 64

products have given me visible effects! Products range from 12 pounds onwards and are available at http://www.nealsyardremedies.com as well as outlets all over the world. MOA (Magic Organic Apothecary) have the most unique and trendy packaging I’ve seen so far and are recyclable of course. Their products are grown on an organic farm in Summerset have really been worth the wait! Their original product, the green balm, is an organic multipurpose balm and although it is their best seller my attention had to be torn away from the ‘daily calming ritual’. It comes with a bamboo face cloth and a pot of the balm, which is also used to take off makeup and clean the face! Finally - a strong enough natural makeup remover! Going onto the face oil, which is rich in damask rose essential oil, which helps with blemishes, and the organic yarrow essential oil helps to even the skin tone. I think it is very important for every organic product not only to help your skin to detox but to help you as well! MOA has an amazing fortifying bath lotion which de-stresses and relives pain and the best part is, it actually does exactly that! I tried it after the gym and my bottle may be empty very soon! These products are all available on www.moa.co.uk and start from as little as 4 pounds a product! There really is no reason not to try! Something for the men? Here it is! Pavanito is a line of skincare and hair products originated from Dubai. The products are individually manufactured by hand and I was able to speak to Pavanito himself after he sent over the products. All products are made in very small batches, as the lines are very luxurious and expensive. I am so happy someone is catering specifically to men as well! He personally sent over a peppermint smelling facewash, hair and face oil - I think I just got my husband to switch to organic products as well! Find the products and more information on the brand here - https://pavanito.ecwid.com Over to Denver, Colorado with KHUS + KHUS. This brand uses essential oils as their base product and contains botanical antioxidant rich formulas. They sent me the face wax, face serum, body wax and body serum to try. Massaging the body with flower essence calms the outer mind and sensory levels connecting us to a deeper level of healing. I particularly liked the face serum as even though it was made with oils, it did not leave the face even slightly sticky or oily and gave a glow matt after effect. The products range from 40-85 dollars and are all available on https://khus-khus.com Saving the best for last, in my opinion, I travelled to California this month and Osea sent me a couple of their products to try. I am a huge fan of the seaside so when all the products felt like I was taking a dive underwater but left me feeling tingly fresh and super refreshed, I was totally excited about it. Osea is actually from Malibu and incorporates algae in all its products. I tried the Osea cleansing mud, the ocean cleanser, eyes and lips, and my favourite, the sea mineral mist. They have a huge list of celebrity clients as well who, without a doubt, will be recommending these products! Prices range from 44 dollars upwards and are available on www. oseamalibu.com

ow many times have you heard the concept of ‘street style’ in fashion? Surely, way too many times! But do you really understand what it means? To help you with that, we have taken to the streets of Al Satwa in Dubai, with the sole purpose of expressing our street style selves and bringing you some visuals and thoughts around this popular topic. In case you’re wondering, we have been inspired by a very cool campaign from All Saints called ‘Lost in New Orleans.’ This campaign is all about authentic people and their individuality; about losing ourselves beneath the surface of the city to find inspiration. Are you ready to get #LostIn the streets of our beloved city of Dubai?

It is very important to discover your own personal style; there is no right or wrong, just what makes you feel great about yourself, your state of mind, attitude and personality.
There is something about street style that screams cool, trendy and unique.
Street style is not only about fashion and the latest trends; it’s about people and their authenticity.

We love experimenting with fashion by finding sources of inspiration everywhere around us; the streets, books, even movies and music.
We view our style as a representation of who we are and our personal story; the life experiences that made us who we are today and who we want to become in the future.

The way you dress says a lot about you without saying a word.
You can start experimenting with street style by mimicking the outfits of people out on the side-walks or from your favourite Instagram accounts. Then ask yourself, what do you like about their style, mood and colours? Most importantly, have a think about whether the outfit fits your body proportions, optimal colours, personality and lifestyle. Then you are ready to go!

GARA MOUNTAINS
O
ne of the greatest tourist destinations in Al Ahsa, is the Gara Mountains, about 14 kilometres to the east of Hofuf, lying in the middle of a green oasis. This summer, I had the unique chance to be in the most dramatic looking cave in Saudi Arabia. The mountain's base is about 1,400 hectares and 150 feet high. It is one of the key natural landmarks in the country. Early morning, we began the drive from Al Khobar to Al Ahsa, three hours journey between glorious sand dunes on the way to one of the largest Palm Oases in the world. A paved road separates the mountain from the oasis and passes by four villages; Gara, Towaithir, Dalwa, and Tohaimiya. It can be climbed from different places and people from those villages know exactly where and how. 76
JULY 2018
However, a pathway in the western side, near Gara, led us to the top. I stepped into the cave with a slight chill on my skin and deep thoughts in my mind about the history of this mountain. Thousands of years ago, local people were hiding and living inside the Gara Mountain in summertime with slightly cooling air. The Mountain is visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists annually. You can easily walk around the mountain and explore the caves and the passageways totalling 1.5km. Enjoy also the visitor centre and the fresh foods and teas and fruit drinks in the outside cafes. A great Saudi day!!

WRITING MOVIE
WRONGS moviewrongs.com by: JIM WEST

T
he first Sicario staring Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, and Josh Brolin gave us a gritty across the border and back look at drug cartels and the US government’s involvement to try and control them. In this sequel, Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin are back but this time there are no rules (as Brolin’s Matt Graver character comments at one point in the film). Sadly, this isn’t strictly true and this is what makes the second half of the film fall flat. The trailers lead you to believe there will be a huge clash between Brolin and Toro but unfortunately, this never happens.
Here come the spoilers. The film starts off, quite literally, with a bang. Terrorists walk into a Kansas City shopping center and detonate explosive vests in a suicide bombing attack. Matt Graver is brought in to instigate a cartel war among the bosses in Mexico so they are preoccupied with fighting each other and the flow of people across the border slows down. It’s never made clear how this would actually work but we are already supporting Graver in his quest to seek some sense of revenge/justice. Yet you have to ponder; did this actually stop future terrorist acts? Particularly as Graver is informed later in the film that the terrorists who blew up the shopping center were not from overseas, but rather from New Jersey. Wow, what an emotional punch to the gut that was! The plan to start this war is to assassinate a member of one gang and then kidnap the daughter of another cartel boss in assumed retaliation. Everything moves along according to plan until delivery of the girl back across the border is ambushed by cops paid off by the cartel seeking to kill the girl or hold her for ransom. Graver’s team kills the cops and is left with a huge international incident. Soon his operation is cancelled and he is told to clean up the mess. This means he has to kill the girl and del Toro, who he sent off to 78
JULY 2018
track and find the girl after she ran away from the earlier ambush. Alejandro, played masterfully by del Toro, eats the screen alive with his quiet and deadly hitman character. Yet he gets caught out by being seen by a boy who saw him before in a Texas parking lot. He is surprised by the Mexican smugglers on the bus bringing him and the daughter of cartel boss to the border as they are trying to get back to the States against the wishes of Graver and his superiors. Lucky for Alejandro, he set off a GPS locator for Graver to find them and Graver’s team eventually gets the girl. But instead of killing her, Graver takes her to the States to enter witness protection. Graver thinks Alejandro is dead which perhaps is what brings about his change of heart. That entire section of the film is flat-out boring! The first third of the film sets up something epic to happen and instead we get del Toro shot through the mouth in the desert. So, how to make this film better? Have Alejandro notice the extra guys on the bus and he can get a leg up on them before they ambush him. Have Graver’s team descend upon the bus chaos to extract the girl and then we have the set-up of Toro versus Brolin the trailers promised us. Have Graver and Alejandro go head to head with Alejandro taking out Graver’s team one by one along with the gang members. Graver can call in a drone strike to take out Alejandro and believe he is dead. Graver can still take the girl to the States for witness protection but the young gang member can escape this final fight and we can have the end scene of Alejandro talking to the kid to recruit as a Sicario. Our guys live to fight another day and we get the final fight we wanted to see. So in closing, deliver the promises you make with your movie trailers. That is what would have made this a great film.

MAID: HARD WORK, LOW PAY, AND A MOTHER'S WILL TO SURVIVE
DARIUS THE GREAT IS NOT OKAY
by Stephanie Land
by Adib Khorram
In the tradition of bestsellers NICKEL AND DIMED and EVICTED, Stephanie Land—a writing fellow for the Economic Hardship Reporting Project (EHRP) and Center for Community Change (CCC)—writes a compassionate, unflinching account of her years scraping by as a housekeeper to make ends meet. In MAID, we enter Stephanie Land’s world and that of domestic workers who are paid far less than their needs. As a single mother, Stephanie scrubbed the toilets of the wealthy and lived in a dank studio with her daughter. Her journey is one of resilience and grit as she hops from home to home and survives on meager wages and public assistance. MAID is a deep dive into the gut-wrenching truth of both the secret underbelly of middle class America, and the reality of what it’s like to be in service to them. Written in raw, masterful, heart-rending prose, MAID is the story of one woman’s tenacity to survive and break free of the grips of the system to give her child a better life. Stephanie Land’s work gives voice to the working poor.
Darius Kellner speaks better Klingon than Farsi, and he knows more about Hobbit social cues than Persian ones. He's about to take his first-ever trip to Iran, and it's pretty overwhelming especially when he's also dealing with clinical depression, a disapproving dad, and a chronically anemic social life. In Iran, he gets to know his ailing but still formidable grandfather, his loving grandmother, and the rest of his mom's family for the first time. And he meets Sohrab, the boy next door who changes everything. Sohrab makes sure people speak English so Darius can understands what's going on. He gets Darius an Iranian National Football Team jersey that makes him feel like a True Persian for the first time. And he understand that sometimes, best friends don't have to talk. Darius has never had a true friend before, but now he's spending his days with Sohrab playing soccer, eating rosewater ice cream, and sitting together for hours in their special place, a rooftop overlooking the Yazdi skyline.
THE SIMILARS by Rebecca Hanover
The Similars are all anyone can talk about at the elite Darkwood Academy. Who are these six clones? What are the odds that all of them would be Darkwood students? Who is the madman who broke the law to create them? Emma couldn't care less. Her best friend, Oliver, died over the summer and all she can think about is how to get through her junior year without him. Then she comes face-to-heartbreaking-face with Levi— Oliver's exact DNA replica and one of the Similars. Emma wants nothing to do with the Similars, but she keeps getting pulled deeper and deeper into their clique, uncovering dark truths about the clones and her prestigious school along the way. But no one can be trusted…not even the boy she is falling for who has Oliver's face.

MELMOTH
SADIE by Courtney Summers
by Sarah Perry
It has been years since Helen Franklin left England. In Prague, working as a translator, she has found a home of sorts—or, at least, refuge. That changes when her friend Karel discovers a mysterious letter in the library, a strange confession and a curious warning that speaks of Melmoth the Witness, a dark legend found in obscure fairy tales and antique village lore. As such superstition has it, Melmoth travels through the ages, dooming those she persuades to join her to a damnation of timeless, itinerant solitude. To Helen it all seems the stuff of unenlightened fantasy. But, unaware, as she wanders the cobblestone streets Helen is being watched. And then Karel disappears.
A gripping novel about the depth of a sister's love; poised to be the next book you won't be able to stop talking about. A missing girl on a journey of revenge and a Serial-like podcast following the clues she's left behind. Sadie hasn't had an easy life. Growing up on her own, she's been raising her sister Mattie in an isolated small town, trying her best to provide a normal life and keep their heads above water. But when Mattie is found dead, Sadie's entire world crumbles. After a somewhat botched police investigation, Sadie is determined to bring her sister's killer to justice and hits the road following a few meager clues to find him.
TRANSCRIPTION
OHIO
by Kate Atkinson
by Stephen Markley
Transcription is a bravura novel of extraordinary power and substance. Juliet Armstrong is recruited as a young woman by an obscure wartime department of the Secret Service. In the aftermath of war she joins the BBC, where her life begins to unravel, and she finally has to come to terms with the consequences.
The debut of a major talent; a lyrical and emotional novel set in an archetypal small town in northeastern Ohio—a region ravaged by the Great Recession, an opioid crisis, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan—depicting one feverish, fateful summer night in 2013 when four former classmates converge on their hometown, each with a mission, all haunted by the ghosts of their shared histories. Since the turn of the century, a generation has come of age knowing only war, recession, political gridlock, racial hostility, and a simmering fear of environmental calamity. In the country’s forgotten pockets, where industry long ago fled, where foreclosures, Walmarts, and opiates riddle the land, death rates for rural whites have skyrocketed, fueled by suicide, addiction and a rampant sense of marginalization and disillusionment. This is the world the characters in Stephen Markley’s brilliant debut novel, Ohio, inherit. This is New Canaan.
SHE WOULD BE KING
THE REAL LOLITA
by Wayetu Moore
by Sarah Weinman
A novel of exhilarating range, magical realism, and history—a dazzling retelling of Liberia’s formation. Wayétu Moore’s powerful debut novel, She Would Be King, reimagines the dramatic story of Liberia’s early years through three unforgettable characters who share an uncommon bond. Gbessa, exiled from the West African village of Lai, is starved, bitten by a viper, and left for dead, but still she survives. June Dey, raised on a plantation in Virginia, hides his unusual strength until a confrontation with the overseer forces him to flee. Norman Aragon, the child of a white British colonizer and a Maroon slave from Jamaica, can fade from sight when the earth calls him. When the three meet in the settlement of Monrovia, their gifts help them salvage the tense relationship between the African American settlers and the indigenous tribes, as a new nation forms around them.
Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita is one of the most beloved and notorious novels of all time. And yet very few of its readers know that the subject of the novel was inspired by a real-life case: the 1948 abduction of eleven-year-old Sally Horner. Weaving together suspenseful crime narrative, cultural and social history, and literary investigation, The Real Lolita tells Sally Horner’s full story for the very first time. Drawing upon extensive investigations, legal documents, public records, and interviews with remaining relatives, Sarah Weinman uncovers how much Nabokov knew of the Sally Horner case and the efforts he took to disguise that knowledge during the process of writing and publishing Lolita. Sally Horner’s story echoes the stories of countless girls and women who never had the chance to speak for themselves. By diving deeper in the publication history of Lolita and restoring Sally to her rightful place in the lore of the novel’s creation, The Real Lolita casts a new light on the dark inspiration for a modern classic.
SMALL ANIMALS: PARENTHOOD IN THE AGE OF FEAR by Kim Brooks
One morning, Kim Brooks made a split-second decision to leave her four-year old son in the car while she ran into a store. What happened would consume the next several years of her life and spur her to investigate the broader role America's culture of fear plays in parenthood. In Small Animals, Brooks asks, Of all the emotions inherent in parenting, is there any more universal or profound than fear? Why have our notions of what it means to be a good parent changed so radically? In what ways do these changes impact the lives of parents, children, and the structure of society at large? And what, in the end, does the rise of fearful parenting tell us about ourselves? Fueled by urgency and the emotional intensity of Brooks's own story, Small Animals is a riveting examination of the ways our culture of competitive, anxious, and judgmental parenting has profoundly altered the experiences of parents and children. In her signature style by turns funny, penetrating, and always illuminating which has dazzled millions of fans and been called "striking" by New York Times Book Review and "beautiful" by the National Book Critics Circle, Brooks offers a provocative, compelling portrait of parenthood in America and calls us to examine what we most value in our relationships with our children and one another.
THERE WILL BE NO MIRACLES HERE: A MEMOIR by Casey Gerald
Casey Gerald's story begins at the end of the world: Dallas, New Year's Eve 1999, when he gathers with the congregation of his grandfather's black evangelical church to see which of them will be carried off. His beautiful, fragile mother disappears frequently and mysteriously; for a brief idyll, he and his sister live like Boxcar Children on her disability checks. When Casey following in the footsteps of his father, a gridiron legend who literally broke his back for the team is recruited to play football at Yale, he enters a world he's never dreamed of, the anteroom to secret societies and success on Wall Street, in Washington, and beyond. But even as he attains the inner sanctums of power, Casey sees how the world crushes those who live at its margins. He sees how the elite perpetuate the salvation stories that keep others from rising. And he sees, most painfully, how his own ascension is part of the scheme.

SHOPPING IS MY CARDIO "Women who spend a lot of time shopping, live longer and are less likely to suffer from depression" said the late empress of style, JOAN RIVERS, God bless her soul. And she was right. If we shop right, that is! So my beauties, if you are looking for a quick, closet fixer-upper, then you are already in the right time and place by reading this article. All women repeatedly want to know what to shop for, what items are relevant, what is a must-have this year, what will look good and will not falter or default her attire game, what is timeless and, most importantly, what is a complete waste of time and money, not to mention a complete waste of closet space? So fasten your seatbelts ladies, put your wallets in the upright position and do give that stewardess and that shopping attendant (who is me today!) some credit; because I want you to be safe and not turn into one of those shopaholics with easy access to money. Instead, I offer an easier, guaranteed remedy which is to look, listen and learn. Not to mention the saving on those credit cards! And with that, step one will be accomplished and you are on your way to a swift recovery. Have you ever stood in front of your wardrobe, your eyes gawking as if this closet is an alien that you would love to send back to Mars on the first space shuttle? If so, then do read on how we, together, can remedy this feeling of bewilderment with a few easy steps. Step one - You should love and be able to remember all of the items you buy. If you don’t remember them, chances are you never really liked them and you will never wear them. So you should probably return them immediately (if you still have the receipt). Step two - Shopping should be fun and can be shared with friends to enhance the experience. Two heads exchanging opinions when shopping is always better than one. Plus, you will hear all the latest gossip you missed when you were away from your office on vacation! If you have always dreamed but failed of getting ready and being out that door in mere minutes or just wish those nothing-to-wear days will never visit you again, then I suggest you continue reading. Now we get to the real nitty-gritty. This is the fun part my lovelies! The shopping experience itself and what we all should and must have, ready and available in our closets at all times, forever and ever. DENIMS (or the street name, JEANS) - The best pick that fits mostly all, would be a high-waist or high-rise fitted pair, better known as skinny jeans. They can be dressed down casually or dressed up, depending on what top you choose. Trust me, they’re a real life saver. BLAZER, CROPPED CARDIGAN and THE WRAP KIMONO - Must have tops! Just throw them over work separates and come every season, they deliver. Whether you are on the way to the office in the morning or out to a dinner later that night, these items work with you, never against you. Just keep in mind to try each and every piece before purchasing as some fits should be a bit loose or a bit tight to really show off the trend or your figure. 86
JULY 2018
The secret to good style every day must start with our alltime favourite and fail-safe item, THE DRESS - Always say yes to the dress! It’s an easy put-on item that you don’t have to match three garments with in the winter. And you can just grab a matching clutch or purse in the summer. Even a linen A-line dress can be dressed up easily with matching accessories, a jacket and pumps for a meeting, or dressed down to visit your local beach for a tan. There are so many items to choose from in any season which are timeless and worth every penny spent; those kinds of trends and pieces that will match with almost anything in your wardrobe and would definitely complement the look you are going for. Try these tips to shop the right way from now on and invest in pieces that will not only make you easy on the eye but definitely easier on your credit card! THE PERFECT WHITE T-SHIRT AND SHIRT - These two items have evolved year after year and are found in more than a million shapes, form and size. They can be dressed uptown or casually trendy and are therefore, truly essential. Whether you are teaming it up with jeans, a suit or just layering it under a slip dress, wrap top or blazer, the ‘perfect white’ is the gift that keeps on giving. So please ladies, do take advantage of its generosity! ANKLE BOOTS - A good pair of these should be in your footwear collection and if you are worried that boots are made for walking but never for summer, then think again. Summer boots are on and about every major runway worldwide. They are always trending, fit almost all ages and, I must stress, are deadly comfortable. So do invest in a classic cut pair this season and jazz them up with a wide range of pieces to dress up or down, no matter where you might be walking. Choose a solid basic colour or go for the nude tan hue that will help you fashionably go a long way with any look you fancy. Remember, Cinderella is proof that a new pair of the right kind of shoes can change your life! Another wardrobe basic is non-other than the SMART WHITE or NUDE TRAINERS - These are your Superwomen, your Wonder Women and even your Guardian Angel. They will save the day, time and time again. A pair of these plain fashion trainers can come to the rescue as if you are Louis Lane and here comes Superman! Especially when you can’t stand or face another day in heels. They are so perfect (and comfortable) to team up with our friend the t-shirt, jeans or a dress on the weekend, but equally stunning to add a modern touch of style to the office suit. I could go on and on about basic wardrobe needs for us women, but if we just get these few picks right we can definitely be striding in style and get confident with what we choose to wear all the time. So my beauties, think of all these tips and tricks when you next decide to go shopping and do try to get it right, while keeping in mind not to over-spend. And please remember what you really lack in your closet. Never think ‘random’ when you shop, always focus on what you really need. Happy shopping my darlings - stay safe and fashionable!

The P.4001 is developed from the automatic P.4000 movement: the off-centred micro-rotor which rotates in both directions, the power reserve of three days stored in two spring barrels linked in series, the mechanism for stopping the balance, enabling the time to be set with absolute precision and the full balance bridge with twin supports for greater stability. The new calibres also have some extremely useful additional functions: the date, the GMT function with a central hand which indicates the time in a second time zone, am/pm indication (relative to home time) in the small seconds dial and, finally, indication of the remaining power reserve. The P.4001 has the circular indicator on a bridge of the movement. Finally, two very useful devices make setting the watch extremely simply and precise: the first is the mechanism which stops the balance and zeroes the seconds hand as soon as the winding crown is pulled out; the second enables the local time hand to be adjusted forward and backward in jumps of one hour at a time, without stopping the minute hand or interfering with the running of the watch, but automatically adjusting the date. www.cpmagazine.net

PRESS SPECIAL EDITION OF A. LANGE & SÖHNE’S FIRST TOURBILLON WATCH WITH STOP SECONDS AND ZERO-RESET
Four years ago, in the 1815 TOURBILLON, A. Lange & Söhne first combined the stop-seconds mechanism for the tourbillon with the ZERO-RESET time setting feature. Together, the patented mechanisms allowed the watch to be stopped and then set with onesecond accuracy. Now, this precision timekeeping instrument has been introduced in an edition limited to 100 pieces with a white enamel dial. Limited to 100 watches, the special variation of the 1815 TOURBILLON melds traditional craftsmanship with modern micromechanics. At first sight, the lucidly designed watch with the white enamel dial is a case study of understatement. But the large aperture at 6 o’clock alone provides a modest impression of its complexity: it reveals the one-minute tourbillon, suspended beneath a black polished bridge, in action. However, this tourbillon doesn’t just offset the influence of gravity. Lange’s experts have engineered a logical refinement of the intricate filigreed complication by adding two patented mechanisms. First introduced in 1997 with the LANGEMATIK model, the ZERO-RESET mechanism interacts with the stop-seconds mechanism for the tourbillon – patented in 2008 – to assure one-second accuracy when stopping and setting the timepiece. The mechanical precision of the lavishly finished manufacture calibre L102.1 can be admired through the sapphire-crystal caseback. The exquisite movement decoration is crowned by a diamond endstone in a screwed gold chaton on the fourth-wheel bridge, which is adorned with a freehand engraving. The 39.5-millimetre platinum cases are consecutively numbered from 001/100 to 100/100. They constitute an appealing frame for the perfectly crafted white enamel dial. Some 30 manual processes are required to craft each dial. The quest for historic authenticity stands out in details such as the separately printed and red-fired number 12. Blued-steel hands, Arabic numerals and a railway-track minute scale represent the classic personality synonymous with legendary nineteenth- and twentieth-century pocket watches. The 1815 TOURBILLON is equipped with a black hand-stitched alligator leather strap secured with a solid-platinum deployant buckle. www.cpmagazine.net
