THREE TIPS ON HOW TO EFFECTIVELY UTILIZE CAMPAIGN BUDGET ‫ثالث نصائح لتوظيف ميزانية الحملة التسويقية بشكل فعال‬ Maurice Hamilton

Global CEO of The SMC Group

M

arketing doesn’t just include discovering

innovative ideas and ways to deliver a brand to the right audience. It also includes smart budgeting and effective utilization of resources to achieve optimal results. You might know where to spend but the real question is ‘how do you spend?’. It is important to understand the goal of a campaign prior to budgeting. Whether the goal is to build clientele or boost customer and public engagement with a brand, understanding which areas in a campaign require the most attention before allocating budget is key.

Know your audience

To ensure that budget is effectively utilized, understanding the brand’s audience and potential audience is essential. From audience interests, to their age-group, to their ethnicity, identifying the personas of the target audience helps brands to decide where to allocate budget. Allocating budget to an expat brand ambassador or lead artist for a campaign of a local brand that targets an Emirati audience will not yield the desired results. However, appointing a popular Emirati personality will aid in accomplishing a successful campaign.

Spend right

The staggering rise in competition makes it easy to stray and spend budget on activities that may not be in the best interest of the campaign’s success. Understanding the end-goal of the campaign is vital. Investing resources and budget in relevant events or core workshops that can help build and maintain brand awareness can boost audience engagement. Moreover, investing in popup events is another cost-effective crowd pleaser. All integrated campaigns must include budget for digital spend both paid and earned across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Get creative

Do things that have never been done before. Allocate budget towards components of the campaign that will yield the best results. Professional shoots and videos of product/service, flyers, banners for events, event setup costs all require budget and can prove to be vital to a campaign’s success. An effective way to analyze the best creative angle for a campaign is to step out of the brand and understand what consumers and clients are looking for. With campaign defined as a planned course of action formulated to achieve defined objectives, budget is the driving force, also the make-or-break, behind a campaign. Whether a large sum is spent on a campaign or a costeffective path is chosen, budget will always define the level of success a brand can reach. 14

FIDGET SPINNER A STRESS-RELIEVER, OR A MERE TOY? Have Fun Teaching Christian Johnson

A

new trend has made its way into the classroom: the fidget spinner. The long hours in a school day tend to make it difficult for children to focus. Many fidget devices have been invented over the years to help these children to release their stress and provide better focus to their teachers. While those devices have caused little issues in the past, fidget spinners have become controversial in the classroom.

Fidget Spinner: a Top-Selling Toy

Fidget spinners are often mistaken as a toy by children due to their many shapes, sizes, and colors offered. They have become the top selling toy on Amazon. Best Product shows fidget spinners as one of the best toys on the market. Retail stores are now offering these devices in their toy departments. Forbes has called fidget spinners the “musthave office toy of 2017”. Children and adults alike are taking away the purpose of the fidget spinner and turning it into a classroom toy.

Teenager with Fidget Spinner

What Are Teachers Saying About the Fidget Spinner? Have Fun Teaching recently took to Facebook to ask teachers their opinion on fidget spinners. When asked whether these devices promoted positive classroom management, many said no, but offered some leeway. “Not at all, unless written into Education plans or suggested for interventions.” – Kathy H. Teachers believe this new fad has become a major distraction in their classroom and is just another toy. Other teachers believe these have benefited their ADHD and autistic children. “[Fidget spinners are] useful for autistic children who need these to alleviate anxiety and in some cases children with ADHD who would find anything to fiddle with than focus.” – Lesley S. While some teachers did not provide an opinion either way, they offered alternative advice on classroom management. “There wouldn’t be such a need or desire for fidgets if children had more movement, standing desk options and sensory fulfillment.” – Nechole J. As teachers, we need to find ways to help children focus. Fidget spinners may be the answer for some children. Allowing children to stand for short periods of time could help others. Find something that interests the child that is struggling to focus. Have Fun Teaching offers many Behavior Management resources for your classroom! We also offer Character Education Songs and Activities that will promote positive behavior in the classroom.

JUNE 2017

Please introduce yourself to our readers: I am a Kuwaiti working in the media field, currently a presenter on Kuwait TV and now the Executive Editor for CP Magazine.

Tell us about your education: I completed my Bachelors Degree in Political Science from the Kuwait University as my major and also studied Public Administration as minor.

How did you get interested in TV? Tell us about your journey to becoming a TV presenter. Back in 2005, I trained at AlWatan TV as a news anchor because at that time I had studied, and was in love with, politics. I was a very serious person at that time. I watched only news on the TV and wanted to be a news anchor. However, I was afraid of getting famous at an early age (I was only 17 at that time). After 10 years I once again wanted to work in TV, but in something non-political. A local TV channel approached me and seeing my social media profile thought I could be a good TV host.

Have you had any formal training in acting, presenting, public-speaking etc? Do you think it is important? Yes, I received some training while I was working at AlWatan TV and took several lessons on etiquettes. I believe there is always room for improvement and learning so if you have the opportunity to learn, it is definitely important to improve yourself.

Tell us about the first program you presented: The first show I hosted was a morning show. It was for four hours from 9am to 1pm. It was daily from Sundays to Thursdays for AlMajlis TV. I was on air with them for almost a month but my training with them lasted for almost four months.

What were some of the challenges you had to face and how did you overcome them? I had many challenges. The channel I was working with was of a very serious nature as it was a political channel for the National Assembly. They wanted me to be very serious and didn't want the host to be humorous at all. We had many restrictions regarding personality. The clothes were not sponsored so it was difficult to find clothes for a daily show. I was a quicker learner than my colleagues and picked it up very fast. All of us working on this channel were young with not much prior experience. I wasn’t at all camera-shy and felt very comfortable. The experience told me that this was what I wanted to be.

Who has been your inspiration? To be honest, I cannot name one specific person. Maybe I just wanted to take my own path and make my own mark.

Who do you admire and would like to meet? I would like the Honor of meeting the Crown Prince of Kuwait.

021

"What goes around comes around"

What are some of your other hobbies? I have many hobbies, such as travelling, fashion, shopping and sports. I used to read a lot about politics, news, religion and history when I was a more serious person but then switched to having more fun!

How do you spend your leisure time? Mostly online shopping and organizing my room, clothes and accessories.

What made you so interested in gym and fitness? My love for sports was not a coincidence; I was always a sports person from a very early age. When I was in kindergarten, my mother introduced me to yoga and I did yoga and gymnastics until I was a teenager. Since then, whilst I no longer do gymnastics, I have always been working out and exercising, even if it was just walking. Recently I discovered cross-fit and I’m loving it! It’s not just exercising; you are moving almost every muscle of your body. It’s great, especially for the women in our culture as we do not move a lot. I feel 1 hour of cross-fit is better than 3 hours of working on yourself just randomly.

How often do you go to the gym? I go five to six times a week. I go very early in the morning and it

has inspired lots of people and some of my friends too because, when they wake up in the morning and check my Snapchat and see me in the gym, they get motivated. In fact, some of my friends have joined cross-fit with me.

What are you reading at the moment? At the moment I am reading Mind Set by Carol S. Dweck.

What are your plans and dreams for the future? I would like to do something special during Ramadan and in the near 022

JUNE 2017

future. I really would like to have my own show on the TV where I get to choose everything. I want to do a talk show but one that is meaningful and pushes boundaries, just like Oprah Winfrey. If you were to ask me who I wish to be like, I would say Oprah Winfrey.

What according to you are your 3 keys to success? I personally think there are no specific keys to success that can apply to everyone. It’s different for each person. For example, I could say education and good looks are the keys but you might see a successful person who doesn't have good looks or is well educated. In general, I believe anyone can be successful but they have to see what makes them special and explore it further.

Your favourite quote? "What goes around comes around" I love this quote because I thoroughly believe in Karma. On that note, I always say that I believe in four things in life: love, peace, Karma, and music. When I say love, I don't just mean loving your significant other but loving life in general; loving everything; loving your life, your family and spreading love. When you give love you get love in return. I am very optimistic and try to love everything around me. I also believe that music has a healing power. So people who don't enjoy music are wasting their time.

What type of music do you listen to? I don't fix to any specific genre or type of music. I listen to everything. Life is like a salad; you have to mix it up. Every day is different and the music I choose depends on my mood. I love everything - pop, hip-hop, classic, etc.

I

FAMILY FIRST

Gill Sherry

f there’s one thing my time in Kuwait has taught me, it’s the importance of family. Family values are particularly evident here and it’s a pleasure to see so many generations enjoying each other’s company. Of course, I’ve always appreciated my own family, but being so far away from them has reinforced my own family values and strengthened those blood ties. Sadly, the circle of life means that none of us live forever. Sooner or later we lose those who mean the world to us - all the more reason to make the most of them while we can. However, all too often, I hear of people falling out with family members, sometimes over the most trivial things. These disagreements can last for many years with conflict eating away at the very heart of the family. I understand how a clash of personalities can trigger a dispute - we’re all different after all - but is it really worth sacrificing your family for? Pride plays a big part when it comes to unresolved arguments but someone has to swallow their pride to enable harmony to be restored. At the very least, they should agree to disagree. The reasons for family feuds are many and varied. They range from the simplest, petty disagreement to the most serious, apparently unforgivable, misdemeanor. The important thing to remember, not just for your own peace of mind but for that of the rest of your family, is that even if you can’t forgive, you must learn to forget. Sibling squabbles are, understandably, considered the most disruptive of family fall-outs. All too often it’s the parents who suffer the most, constantly stuck in the middle of two or more stubborn offspring who refuse to call a truce. As if it’s not bad enough treading on eggshells on a daily basis, frustrated parents are also forced to face conflict at times when the family should be joined together in celebration. Who should they spend Christmas with? What will the others think? What will happen on the day of the wedding? It’s an impossible situation brought about by nothing but selfishness. 024

JUNE 2017

But it’s not just feuding brothers and sisters who fall out. I know of at least one situation where a son chose to walk away from his parents simply because they failed to take his side during an argument. Not only is the family now faced with daily dilemmas, think of all those lost years; the quality time that can never be replaced. To make matters worse, the son has since had children of his own who have never met their grandparents and who have been born into conflict instead of a family network of love and support. It’s likely that this particular dispute will remain unresolved, resulting in lifelong regret for most of the family, especially his parents. Evidence, should we need it, that the severing of family ties always comes at a cost. I can never imagine not talking to my sister or arguing about something to the point of no return. We have shared a lifetime of memories and continue to make more. We share a love for our parents, a bond from our childhood and a future of hopes and dreams. I appreciate that we’re all different and don’t claim to understand the unique complexity of other families but I fail to understand how one disagreement, no matter how serious, can be allowed to destroy the very heart of a family. Perhaps it comes down to respect; something else clearly evident in Kuwait. Having love and respect for other family members is essential for a content and stress-free existence. A lack of respect shows indifference when it comes to the happiness of others and indicates a selfish, uncaring attitude. This alone can result in disagreements and arguments within a family unit. It’s fair to say that other cultures could learn a lot from Kuwait. In many other countries, teenagers tend to prefer the company of their friends to that of their own family; grandparents are often excluded from days or evenings out; and weekends are spent watching TV in separate rooms of the house. Thank you Kuwait for reminding me of the importance of family values. Time is precious, spend it wisely.

10 FUN THINGS TO DO WITH YOUR KIDS THIS SUMMER

S

ummer is one of the most relaxed times of the year. School is out, routines are more relaxed, kids have more time to play and parents are not worried about homework and driving back and forth for after school activities. Many parents look forward to summers with their kids but worry about how much screen time the kids get. Here are 10 fun activities you can do with your children this summer to unglue them from their perpetual screens.

Jack Cunningham “Prudence is key to longer term success” When it comes to sustainability, Jack Cunningham knows that patience and persistence are key. But as the increasing population threatens the world’s resources, what can we do to make a difference? Please introduce yourself to our readers: I head up the Sustainability team at Gemfields, the world’s largest supplier of responsibly sourced, exceptionally rare coloured gemstones. I have been an expert in the sustainability sector for the past 15 years working both as a consultant and in-house for some of the world’s biggest brands. I’m married with two small children and live in London.

Tell us about your education and what special training you took in this field? I studied as a Biologist originally and then progressed to take a Masters Degree in Environmental Technology from Imperial College, London.

Who or what inspired you to go into a career in sustainability?

028

JUNE 2017

health, safety, environment community programmes. On a day to day basis this means that I supervise projects at our mines in Mozambique and Zambia to ensure we meet national and international standards regarding health and safety and the environment, and that we follow best practice in terms of our engagement and relationship with the local community. Gemfields is an industry leader in sustainability, it is at the heart of how we operate, and as such I spend at least half my time supporting the commercial and marketing aims of the business by driving improvements and championing transparency in the downstream gemstone and jewellery sector.

What are the sustainability goals of Gemfields Plc?

I was inspired by a 3-month conservation project I did in Tanzania, mapping virgin coral reefs there with the aim of setting up a sustainable fishery for the local population. It confirmed to me that I wanted to do something with my life that revolved around protecting the environment, but also helping people lead sustainable lives.

It’s our goal to operate in a way that contributes positively to national and local economies, take a leading role in modernising the coloured gemstone sector and build lasting, sustainable livelihoods for the communities around our mines. We believe that coloured gemstones should be mined and marketed by championing three key values credibility, transparency and integrity.

What does your role as the head of sustainability for Gemfields entail?

Where are the mines located and how often do you visit there?

I am responsible for developing the group Sustainability and Risk strategy. I also oversee the company’s quality,

We have two operations in Zambia – the world’s single largest emerald mine, Kagem – and the world’s

single largest Amethyst mine, Kariba. We also have the Montepuez Ruby Mine in Mozambique which is located on one of the most significant ruby deposits discovered in recent history. I travel approximately every 6-8 weeks – mainly to the mines in Africa, but also globally to our other offices or for conferences.

Do you have a specific checklist of things to do during your visits to the mines? I always conduct an operational mine visit as it’s important to see the progress the mine is making. Even though I am not a mining engineer or geologist, it’s crucial to be familiar with the operations and their growth in order to be aware of how health, safety and environmental issues are being managed and improved. I always visit our community projects and partners to find out how they are evolving. We focus on the three areas of health, livelihoods and education with our community projects and it’s personally tremendously satisfying to see these succeed and become a part of the local area. For example, the secondary school we built near Kagem now hosts 800 pupils and achieved great results in their end-of-year exams. We have a number of agricultural projects helping local farming communities and most recently, we opened three new primary schools in Mozambique, straight after launching a mobile health clinic that saw around 8000 patients in the first couple of months. I then spend the remaining few days in meetings with our local sustainability teams, as well as the mine management team.

What insight can you share from your visits that would be useful to other people wanting to change norms? 1. Be patient. Expectations that change occurs quickly have to be quickly managed otherwise frustration can set in; carefully laid plans can easily be derailed or delayed. In my experience, projects that are put in place quickly without proper research and community engagement also don’t succeed in the long-term. 2. Be persistent: change only occurs if you are relentless in pursuing a goal – what may not seem important to some people still has to be achieved. 3. Communicate relentlessly: feedback and coaching is crucial to give people the energy and confidence to push forward.

What are the big barriers or frustrations you face to achieving change? In our sector, it is the expectation that Gemfields has solved all the problems or that we are operating at the same level as a super-major mining company. Mining is a long, slow process and issues of sustainability cannot be solved overnight; whether it’s rehabilitating the environment, introducing safer systems or addressing community needs. Change must be sustainable in an economic sense too – prudence is key to longer term success.

What is your greatest achievement to date? At Gemfields, my major achievement is having built a global sustainability strategy and growing local teams from 1 to over 15

people in just under 3 years, and in that time, overseeing a massive improvement in community relations and projects specifically in Mozambique. The impact we have seen from our efforts has been incredible with many thousands of people benefitting. Visiting and talking with these people never fails to reaffirm why I chose to spend my life in this sector. I am also very proud of the work I have done in the downstream market working with our business partners to help them improve their cutting and polishing factories by carrying out audits – something that had never been done before in the coloured gemstone sector.

What motivates you? What motivates me is transformation, change and innovation. I am passionate about companies that embrace sustainability as a strategic opportunity for change because they see the benefits of being more socially and environmentally responsible. This also means they are transforming how they operate and potentially innovating their products around this which is very exciting. I am motivated also by fixing problems, defending reputation and ensuring that people are doing their jobs properly! www.cpmagazine.net

What are the sustainability?

biggest

challenges

for

There are huge challenges globally. As the world becomes ever more integrated, a challenge is emerging around how companies will address global constraints relating to water, labour and soil productivity. Fundamentally the major driver is the increase in the world’s population and we don’t have a global plan on how to address this growth in consumption. This is putting the world’s systems under enormous pressure.

I have been influenced quite heavily by a few business books over the years: ‘The first 90 days’ by Michael Watkins and ‘How to Lead’ by Jo Owen are two really excellent books on leadership. ‘Let my people go surfing’ by Yvon Chouinard is a hugely inspirational story from the man who was instrumental in setting up one of the world’s most sustainable companies, Patagonia.

What can we, as individuals, do to make a difference?

Can you leave us with who would be your Eco Hero?

Be mindful of what you consume and minimise your footprint whenever you practically can; it doesn’t have to be a comprehensive lifestyle change or, contrary to popular belief, expensive, but being conscious that small changes like reducing your energy use or buying less ‘throw away’ fashion is a good start. A major one is reducing the amount of meat you consume because so much of the world’s resources are used for rearing animals for human consumption.

David Attenborough. He brought wildlife to me through his TV programmes and continues to be a hero, a legend and an inspiration to me.

What key advice would you give to someone looking to enter a career in sustainability now? There are fewer opportunities now than when I started out in 2002, but on the positive side, this is because of a huge increase in interest in the sector. Every company now has a sustainability person, and more people from mainstream corporate roles are transitioning into sustainability. People are attracted to it because it’s about doing good, but that means it’s a hyper-competitive area. Always consider consultancy as a way in – that’s how I started. 030

HOW TO READ FOOD LABELS

T

he first step to a healthy meal, which would lead to a healthy diet, is to choose the right food items. A quick and easy guide to know the products of choice is the food label that is present on every package. However, many find those labels complicated and confusing, and would like to know how to use this information more effectively and easily. The following label-building skills are intended to make it easier for you to use nutrition labels to make quick, informed food choices that contribute to a healthy diet.

1. The Serving Size The first place to start is the serving size and the number of servings in the package. It is the most important reading when comparing brands. The size of the serving on the food package influences the number of calories and all the nutrient amounts listed on the top part of the label. Pay attention to the serving size, especially how many servings there are in the food package. Then ask yourself, ‘How many servings am I consuming?’ (e.g., 1/2 serving, 1 serving, or more?).

2. Calories (and Calories from Fat) Calories provide a measure of how much energy you get from a serving of this food. Remember, the number of servings you consume determines the number of calories you actually eat (your portion amount).

3. The Nutrients: How Much? The nutrients can be separated into two main groups: a. Limit these nutrients: fat (total, saturated and trans fat), cholesterol and sodium. Eating too much fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol or sodium may increase your risk of certain chronic diseases, like heart disease, some cancers or high blood pressure. b. Get enough of these nutrients: fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium and iron Most people don't get enough dietary fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium and iron in their diets. Eating enough of these nutrients can improve your health and help reduce the risk of some diseases and conditions.

4. The Percent Daily Value (%DV) The % Daily Values (%DVs) are based on the Daily Value recommendations for key nutrients but only for a 2,000 calorie daily diet, not 2,500 calories. You might not know how many calories you consume a day, but you can still use the %DV as a frame of reference whether or not you consume more or less than 2,000 calories. The %DV helps you determine if a serving of food is high or low in a nutrient: 5%DV or less is low and 20%DV or more is high Nutrients without a %DV: Trans Fats, Protein and Sugars: Trans Fat: Experts could not provide a reference value for trans fat nor any other information that FDA believes is sufficient to establish a Daily Value or %DV. Scientific reports link trans fat (and saturated fat) with raising blood LDL (‘bad’) cholesterol levels, both of which increase your 032

risk of coronary heart disease, a leading cause of death in the US. It is recommended that you keep your intake of saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol as low as possible as part of a nutritionally balanced diet. Protein: A %DV is required to be listed if a claim is made for protein, such as ‘high in protein’. Otherwise, unless the food is meant for use by infants and children under 4 years old, none is needed. Sugars: No daily reference value has been established for sugars because no recommendations have been made for the total amount to eat in a day. Keep in mind that the sugars listed on the Nutrition Facts label include naturally occurring sugars (like those in fruit and milk) as well as those added to a food or drink.

5. Ingredients List All ingredients in a food product must be listed on the label in order, from largest to smallest by weight. You can use this to spot foods that might be high in saturated fat, added salt or added sugars because

these ingredients are listed in the top three. Also look out for other words on the ingredients list that flag ingredients high in saturated fat, added salt or added sugars. Note that you must check the ingredients for items that might add to the fat, sugar or salt content without clearly mentioning it, for example: ingredients that are high in saturated fat: Animal fat, butter, milk solids, coconut, cream, sour cream. Other ingredient names for added sugar: dextrose, fructose, glucose, honey, maple syrup, high fructose corn syrup. Ingredients containing high amounts of salt: baking powder, garlic salt, yeast extract, monosodium glutamate (MSG), sodium bicarbonate, stock cubes. In conclusion, food labels are a very useful tool when shopping and comparing products because they contain all the information about a certain product. However, informed consumers should know how to read them correctly in order to know how to properly choose the healthiest food items. www.cpmagazine.net

WATER AND ADULTS HOW MENTAL COACHING WILL HELP TO OVERCOME FEAR

I

t seems so simple to be able to swim and enjoy the water but you might know people who are doing everything to avoid the water. They can’t play with their grandchildren or perhaps their training is limited. Swimming is considered an amazing exercise for rehabilitation, health and fitness; and also for meditation. I spent time in France practicing this theory and would like to bring my findings to Kuwait. Most of the ladies I worked with became so much more confident as they learned to swim. They loved the feel of the water and the idea of starting the day in it. It’s simple to sum up - life changing. There is an important mental skill in the process of learning to swim. It’s like building trust. Each person’s approach will be different depending on their personality. I always stay in the water with the beginner. This creates a feeling of trust and safety between us and is really important for improving their ability to overcome fears.

SEE Aquaphobia can usually be traced to a single incident in a person's life in which he or she panicked in the water. Tales of personal horror range from being tossed into the deep end of a pool as a child, to surviving the sinking of a seagoing vessel as an adult. Moreover, adults who can't swim typically have at least one parent with aquaphobia. They may have taken traditional swimming lessons as a child but for whatever reason were never comfortable in water. Many are embarrassed at their inability to swim. People have difficulties adjusting physiologically or psychologically to the weightless environment of water, but they hide it and make excuses to stay out of the water. Like the fear of heights, the fear of depths is a defense mechanism. 034

JUNE 2017

These fears are absolutely intuitive. However, our recreational culture makes us believe that swimming and water sports are a normal part of life. Some people want to learn to swim because they believe being a non-swimmer is a social handicap. Others want to make someone in their family proud. Swimming in our region is very different to swimming in places like Australia or California where you swim and surf every day from a young age.

FEEL When you are swimmer, you create a really close relationship with the water. It’s something magic and special that we, as swimmers, call ‘feeling the water’. There are different ways of learning to feel the water for different levels of learners. The feeling becomes intuitive and the proprioception or kinesthesia is developed.

Proprioception Proprioception includes receptors and the set of nerve endings that allow an individual to know the position and movements of his or her own body without having to observe them visually. Proprioception occurs within the framework of somesthesia, that is, the deep sensitivity of the human body. For this purpose, the so-called proprioceptive receptors are capable of having a reaction to an excitation caused by or on an organ and transmit the information. Note that the term kinesthesia is sometimes used synonymously with proprioception.

Consistency The key to developing an awesome feel for the water is consistency. The more time spent in the water, swimming with deliberate focus on technique, the more your feel for the water will develop. Nothing will help you develop your feel for the water more than being in the water, having your hands in there playing with various speeds and pressures. Developing a better feel for the water happens over time, with consistency. The more you are in the water, the better you learn to move through it.

REACT It's like reading and writing; adults don't like the stigma that goes with not being able to swim. There are so many adults out there who could benefit from a learn-to-swim program. The water is such an amazing element in life and everyone should enjoy it. Water that's warm and deep (or semi-deep) aids tremendously in getting adults to feel at ease in the water. Do sessions that last at least a couple of hours and only use experienced coaches who are comfortable working with adults. Teaching adults to swim is a pretty specialized area. The instructor needs to recognize their desire to overcome their fear and to teach them to swim freestyle so they can benefit from their community pool and do their own thing.

RELEASE DON'T BE AFRAID. Overcoming a fear of the water is the first step towards learning how to swim as an adult. In fact, research suggests that men and women who swim for exercise live longer than those who run or walk. Swimmers had almost a fifty percent lower death rate than runners and walkers. Swimming to maintain personal health is one of the most common reasons that adults finally decide to face their fears. The objectives for each person are individual. Some people just want to be able to be safe in the water and feel comfortable. Others want to be competitive. Most people come to the pool looking for swim-skills training based on their need for fitness. It’s a beautiful feeling being able to teach someone to swim. You can’t stop - and won’t stop - until you remove this life changing obstacle for them. I started with a small group of ladies and every day it is increasing. Observing the fabulous results and the joy they find in the water is so rewarding. It’s a challenge to step out of your comfort zone but it’s magical to overcome your fears, both physical and emotional.

The Takeaway It is an amazing feeling when, one day, you get this magical sensation of feeling the water. Incorporate some mindful drills, some sculling - and do it with consistency - and you will be well on your way to developing that mythical feel for the water.

LET’S LIGHTEN THE LOAD

G

uys, have you ever wondered what women carry in their handbags? Well, you’re not alone. For years I have speculated what might lie within some of these essential accessories. After all, this subject has resulted in my gender being ridiculed for carrying everything but the kitchen sink. The contents of women’s handbags have been the subject of curiosity for years and remain, to many, a complete mystery. Every woman has one - hundreds in some cases - but what they carry in these portable fashion statements can vary dramatically. For the purpose of this article, I carried out my own minisurvey to establish what nestled inside some of our most impressive handbags – with each owner’s consent I hasten to add! My findings ranged from predictable, to surprising, to downright unbelievable. As you might expect, almost all of them contained at least one lipstick, a hairbrush, mascara and a mirror. Well, we all know beauty is a priority these days. Some went a little further and carried a fully stocked make-up bag complete with brushes, powders, and in some cases, false eyelashes. ‘In case of an emergency’ I was told. The next most common find was a mobile phone. These were absent from some handbags but only because the owners preferred to keep them in their pocket. More than half also carried a charger. With the limited battery life of some smart phones and the constant use – for calls, texts and selfies – this was a predictable and astute accompaniment. A purse was another unsurprising find; we all need money after all. The size of the purse ranged from miniscule to ginormous. Many matched the handbag and were equally pristine. Others had clearly seen better days but still did the job intended. From my own point of view, it takes weeks, sometimes months, to get used to a new purse, so I can appreciate the reluctance to let go of a familiar favourite. Something else which varied in size was keys. Some bunches contained only a car key and a single door key. Others looked liked they belonged to a prison warden! The key rings ranged from a simple loop to a giant, yellow Minion. Many were designer. Plenty of ladies still rely on a diary. With many now preferring to use electronic versions, I was surprised at the number of old fashioned diaries still in use. I must admit I’m guilty of this myself, preferring to flick through the pages of a printed book, than to scroll up and down on an electronic gadget.

036

JUNE 2017

Other expected finds included tissues, pens, nail files, plasters, painkillers, sweets and glasses; all of which are permanently nestled in my own handbag of choice. Glasses are a necessary evil, often taking up the majority of space in even the most roomy of bags. However, I simply cannot manage without them so they’re the first thing I reach for when I travel from A to B. When it comes to sunglasses however, I tend to wear them on my head when I go indoors and leave the case in the car. Other ladies, it seems, prefer to carry the case with them. Moving on to more surprising contents, one handbag contained an umbrella. Not the most obvious essential in Kuwait (unless of course it’s to shade from the sun) but as this particular handbag belonged to a British ex-pat, I suppose carrying an umbrella is a hard habit to break – even in the Avenues! Perfume. Perhaps not too surprising, unless it’s a 500ml bottle! Seriously, this particular bottle weighed a ton and could surely have been substituted for a smaller, lighter alternative. More than one lady was found to be carrying a spare pair of shoes. I understand the need to be comfortable but carrying a weighty pair of stilettos around in my handbag is not something I’d choose to do. Tights or stockings yes (an unsightly ladder is a disaster), but a spare pair of shoes? No. One lady was carrying a baby’s dummy. ‘Where is your baby today?’ I asked. ‘She’s out with her friends’ came the reply, ‘She’s 22’. I never did manage to establish why there was a dummy in her handbag. A collection of seashells was another random discovery. Having gathered the shells during a visit to the beach, they remained in a pocket of a handbag, complete with sand. Apparently, the visit to the beach took place almost six weeks ago and she’d yet to retrieve and rinse the shells to give to her daughter. Oh well, you can’t rush these things. One lady had a box of matches, despite the fact she didn’t smoke. Another had a full size torch, despite having a spotlight app on her iphone. But perhaps most surprising of all was a pink, studded dog collar. Nothing too unusual about that you may think. However, this particular lady didn’t own a dog. In this instance, I decided it was best not to ask! So there you have it, a short but enlightening glimpse into the contents of a lady’s handbag. Believe me, I’m just as disturbed by it as you are. Come on ladies, isn’t it time you cleared out the clutter and lightened your load? Men certainly seem to have the right idea. Phone, money, keys. Sorted.

THE LATEST SENSATION IN THE FIELD OF AESTHETIC MEDICINE

HIFU TECHNOLOGY

W

e can all agree that sagging skin is a sure sign of ageing, especially when it's concentrated around the jaw line, neck and eyes. Now there is a new generation skintightening device leading the way in the fight against sagging jowls, turkey necks and tired eyes. HIFU is a non-surgical treatment designed to lift, tighten and form the skin on the face and neck. It is drastically different in its tightening and lifting ability because it not only tightens skin, but also the deep muscular layers underneath; the same foundational layers typically addressed in a surgical face-lift. HIFU drives sound waves into skin and deeper support structures that tighten existing collagen and stimulate more collagen growth over the next three to six months. This is the first non-surgical device to combine focused ultrasound energy that visualizes the area to be treated then accurately deliver pinpoint energy to multiple structural layers of collagen. HIFU is the first ultrasound technology to receive FDA approval for a non-surgical brow, jowl and neck lift. It is used in areas of the face and neck that address sagging of the cheek, jaw line, marionette lines and chin, as well as brows and eyelids. Single areas may be treated or full face and neck for a more complete lift. A visible lift is commonly seen immediately following the procedure, with optimal results occurring over three to six months. There are no pre or post treatment restrictions; no down time, surgery, incisions, injections or scars - and it's done in thirty to sixty minutes per area. Technology is providing amazing ways to safely look your best.

038

JUNE 2017

Who is suitable for treatment? A suitable candidate is someone aged 30+ who has noticed that the skin on their face or neck has become more lax and wishes to lift and tighten the relevant area. For patients in their 30s it is typically used to stimulate collagen production and hence help delay the ageing process. Patients in their 40s and 50s are the most common age group to have this treatment. It is also suitable for those aged 60+ provided the degree of laxity is not too great. It is also for those who have had surgery in the past and wish to prolong the effects of surgical facelifts.

How long until I see results? You may witness some initial effect, but ultimately lifting and firming will take place over approximately 3 months, as collagen is renewed and replaced with new, stronger collagen. As this collagen building process continues, continued improvements can appear for up to 6 months.

How long do the HIFU results last? Most people find results last over 1 year, although yearly touchup treatments are recommended to stay ahead of the ageing process.

Does it hurt? Most people do not report pain. There can be slight aching over

bony areas or a warm sensation in the skin during treatment.

Is it safe? Thousands of treatments have been performed worldwide using HIFU technology without significant adverse events. In addition, ultrasound energy has been used safely in the field of medicine for more than 50 years.

How long does the treatment take? Between 30-90 minutes, depending on area to be treated.

Will I need more than one HIFU treatment? The majority of patients need only one treatment. However, some may benefit from more than one treatment (depending on how much laxity they have and their body’s own biological response to the ultrasound and collagen rebuilding process). Is there any downtime? There is normally no downtime or recovery time needed. Most people return to normal activities right away.

Are there any side effects? There may be slight redness following the treatment. A small amount of patients report swelling, tingling or tenderness to touch.

HOW HYPNOBIRTHING HELPED MY PREGNANCY AND BIRTH EXPERIENCE Naseera Hoorzook

I

was always drawn to positive thinking and believed that the mind could control the body. In 2011 I took a training course in hypnobirthing and was blown away. I had no idea that visualisation and imagery would be able to direct a mother’s birth towards something empowering and calm. I mean, have you ever seen a woman on screen calmly giving birth? Birth is scary, painful and difficult, right? Wrong. I learnt that birth could, for the most part, be how you perceive it to be. So if you see it as painful and difficult then it probably would be. Your muscles, heart rate and physical body, stiffen up when you feel scared. But if you direct your thoughts of birth by working through your fears and anxiety, and by building on thinking positively, focusing on your breath and consciously creating an ideal in your mind then you are more likely to have a birth more beautiful than you’ve ever witnessed on TV. When you are able to eliminate the fears, your body doesn’t respond in a fight or flight reaction, therefore your heart rate is calm and your muscles are at ease, allowing an easier passage of birth. Let me tell you my story. My third baby was a homebirth (in South Africa). I focused on positive stories, meditation and breathing throughout my pregnancy and felt that birth was something to look forward to; a sacred and special time that was up to me to plan and create. Just like we have plans for our weddings, gatherings and birthday parties, we plan it to perfection to ensure it will be joyous and memorable and then it happens similarly. I planned for having my doula, midwife and family present. I planned what I’d use as comfort measures and I discussed this with my caregivers. I did moan and groan as I gave birth. I also felt the ring of fire and there was a time I felt I couldn’t go on, but I was

040

JUNE 2017

already giving birth, feeling fully supported and aware of the process, using my breath to bring me back to my ideal. And before I could think more about pain and discomfort I had already delivered my baby boy and was holding him against my chest. My birth using hypnotherapy was my best birth. It was the birth all my friends thought I was crazy to have before it happened. And yet four years later I still look back on it as one of the most incredible days of my life. It fills me with awe, it lifts me up on days I feel down and on days I question my abilities. My birth has boosted my confidence as a woman and a mother. It has influenced all spheres of my life in ways that I will always be grateful for. It set a foundation for me to confidently parent and live my life by applying the same concepts to other aspects of my life. Being a teacher of hypnobirthing and a doula, I believe in being real while being positive. That means we need to be aware of the realities of birth, all kinds, and the possibility of unforeseen circumstances. The utopia of birth would be an image of a woman in physical bliss while birthing or almost looking dreamy and sleepy as she delivers her baby. But this utopia may be far out of reach and therefore seem too improbable. So when people ask me about hypnobirthing and whether it helps to feel no pain or, on the contrary, pleasure, I’d say that hypnobirthing is a self-development journey. It teaches you to think positively and be able to accept whatever is out of your control. It empowers you to take charge of one of your most memorable times in your entire life by creating beautiful imagery and therefore becoming conscious of making your ideals your reality. Each person’s ideal and the reality they want will be different, and that’s the beauty. We all create what’s best for us. It need not resemble anyone else’s experience.

MAX FACTOR AND THE ICONIC MASCARA

M

ax Factor was founded in 1909 by Polish-Jewish Maksymilian Factorowicz (1877-1938). He was a cosmetician from Congress Poland who specialized in movie make-up. The company was owned by several generations of the family until 1973 when it was sold for US $500 million. Max Factor immigrated to the United States in 1904, together with his family and business and relocated to Los Angeles, California, where he worked in the theatre and film industry. He provided made-to-order wigs and theatrical make-up for movies. In the early years of movie making, Factor developed grease paint in a stick form and began experimenting with various substances in an effort to do a more suitable make-up with better results for the screen. By the beginning of World War I, he had perfected his first cosmetic product and with this great achievement to his credit, he became the authority in the film industry with movie stars eager to try his product. In the early years of his business, he personally applied the make-up to actresses and actors. Among his favourites were Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Jean Harlow, Clara Bow and Judy Garland, but soon all the big movie stars were regular customers at Max Factor Beauty Salon in Hollywood Boulevard. He soon developed face powders and lipsticks too. In 1920, Factor accepted his son’s suggestions and began referring to his products as ‘make-up’ based on the phrase ‘to make up’ (one’s face). Previously, the term ‘make-up’ was considered vulgar and used by people of dubious reputation and not used by the polite society. Later on, the brand developed male shampoos, aftershave lotions, perfumes and smear-proof lipsticks. By the end of 1960 with the introduction of colour television, the company developed Max Factor colour TV make-up, and became the standard for use in colour television, until the arrival of HDTV. 1971 was the year of waterproof make-up. Later, the colourless mascara was released, which then led to the development of the traditional black mascara. Year after year, Max Factor has never failed to impress us with its mascara formulas. Today, we are introduced monthly to new brands and new mascara technologies for volume and length but Max Factor has always been, and will always remain, the favourite mascara of make-up artists around the world. False Lash Effect and 2000 Calorie are the ones I always keep in my make-up kit. Glamour is not something you are born with, it is rather something acquired. Max Factor himself transformed actresses such as Marlene Dietrich and Ava Gardner into timeless icons. Today, Pat McGrath has given the brand a modern twist being their global Creative Director.

How and when did the idea of ‘Salony’ app come up?

What difficulties did you face in finding the right developer for your app?

It all happened in the summer of 2015. I needed a mani and pedi and was trying to call my salon but no-one picked up the phone. I went to them and found out that the salon was closed for renovation. Since I have been a customer of the salon for a long time, I didn’t have a second choice. I went back home surfing the net for some beauty products when suddenly it clicked. Why don’t we have a mobile app which has a beauty service provider in one place? I immediately discussed it with my husband and he liked the idea. We spent the next month doing extensive research and decided to go ahead with it. The biggest challenge at the beginning was to form the team. I wanted someone passionate with commitment and no-one fit better than my childhood friend Ghaida. I pitched the idea to her and she was excited. That was the day we started working on Salony.

When we started the app, we were two people with a vision. No developers, no UX/UI designers and no way to build the product. At the beginning, we relied heavily on freelancers, but we quickly came to the realization that we need to have our own team committed to realizing the vision of Salony. We recruited developers who work remotely on our app and they are now full-fledged members of the Salony team. The process starts with an idea from me or Ghaida, then this idea is turned into screen mockups by our UI/UX designer and finally into a working product by our frontend and backend developers.

When was the app officially launched and what has been the feedback? We official launched in March 2016. As with all new products, we had to work hard to show the people the benefits of using our app over just calling the salon. Over time, we started getting more users and feedback and we kept improving our app. I believe that early adopters were excited about it and now we are at a phase where we hope to get the mainstream users to use it. Nowadays, I often hear ‘you made our life easier’ which was exactly our mission.

Who is your ideal customer? We think of ourselves as more than just an app. The app is just the beginning. Our vision is to become the platform for women’s beauty. Think, Vogue meets Expedia. Women would come to our platform, either the app or on salony. com, to read about the latest trends and the hottest new hair treatment or make-up style. If you find something you’d like to try, you would be able to book that same trendy hair treatment in a salon near you. On the other hand, we are also a marketing and a customer relationship management platform. We empower salons to make it easier to connect with their customers to better manage their offerings and reach new customers. For example, if you are a mother starved for time and can’t leave your house, then all you have to do is browse Salony App and search for the service you want. You will find all the salons that offer home service to your house. Another example is, if you are looking for new salons to try, then you can browse through 80+ salons and see their services, prices and customer reviews.

Tell us about some of the features of the app? Our app is really centered around the beauty experience. The user journey starts with selecting the category of the service that you want: hair cut, nails, massage, etc. After choosing the category, you can select one of our 80+ salons, home service, make-up artist and clinics across Kuwait. Once you see a service provider that looks interesting, you can view their profile and see services, prices, customer reviews and much more. Once you settle on the services that you want you can book and pay seamlessly through the app in real time. Your appointment will be confirmed on the spot.

How many downloads do you have for the app so far and how many clients have signed up? We have more than 40,000 downloads and more than 10,000 signed up users.

Does the app cater to only women or does it include men’s salons too? We are deliberately focusing on women. The way women use salons is fundamentally different from men. This allows us to tailor our app around the woman’s experience. There is nothing, however, that stops men from buying gifts for their loved ones.

Any special features that set the app apart from the rest?

046

We are obsessed with ease of use and speed. We are hard at work making the booking experience easier and faster as well as reducing loading times. Our strategy is to keep the number of steps to the absolute minimum. With our app, you can move from the first screen to the final confirmation in a few seconds. JUNE 2017

What are some of your future plans? Any plans for expansion in the GCC region? We have built a great platform that can be easily deployed in all other geographies. After Kuwait, we plan on moving to UAE and the rest of GCC. After that, there is nothing to stop us from going beyond.

What has been your biggest achievement so far? We believe that an achievement is an amalgamation of small milestones. Since launching the app in March 2016, we have made progress one step at a time. When we launched the app, that was our biggest achievement. Then we signed up our first salon. Then we got our first paying customers. Then we hit 5,000 users, then 10,000. We believe that our achievement is the perseverance in pursuing our vision and investing significant time, energy (not to mention our money) into this vision.

Your message for us at CP magazine: Many thanks for this great opportunity and for supporting the aspiring entrepreneurs of Kuwait.

JUNE 2017

HUSSAIN MOSAWI 1. Hi, when did you open this coffee shop? It opened just over a month ago, although I started working on it almost two years ago. I did training courses in coffee and wanted to understand coffee more deeply before I got into the business. Later, I was looking for a good location and finally, over a month ago, we opened the doors to our customers.

2. What inspired the name 'Mr. Koobs Café? Me and my friends were searching for a name for a long time. We did a lot of research on names and came up with several options only to realize later that they were already taken. At one stage, I wanted to name it ‘GRAVITY’ but could not finalize it. We were looking for a fusion name between English and Arabic language so we came up with Koob (meaning cup in Arabic) and added 'S' to make it plural. Hence, the name Koobs Cafe was chosen. Later the person who designed my logo in America came with the concept of a hat and beard so we finalized the name as ‘Mr. Koobs’.

3. Where do you source your coffee from? We are currently sourcing it locally from a source we know is very superior and offers the best quality. However, we have plans for the near future to have our own in-house roastery to prepare our own coffee.

4. There are many new coffee shops in Kuwait. What do you feel sets you apart from the others? I think each cafe has its own personality, be it the taste, the location, the decoration, the baristas or something else. Everyone works on each of these standards. For us, the number one priority is the experience for our customers and how we deal with our customers, then it’s the coffee.

5. What’s your most popular drink? In the Kuwait market as a whole, Spanish Latte is very popular. So, we too offer it but with our special secret ingredient which makes it our most popular drink.

6. If you were a customer in your own cafe, what would you order from the menu? I am a daily customer here because I take my daily coffee from here and also my croissant. Our croissant is very tasty. So, as a customer myself I would take a flat-white with a pistachio croissant.

7. How would you describe your venue? ‘Enjoy the best coffee in a cool atmosphere’.

8. According to you, what qualities do you think a good barista should have? According to me a good barista must first and foremost have a good personality and a passion for coffee. He has to enjoy what he is doing.

9. Do you have any plans for the rest of the year? Before the end of the year, we plan to introduce our own roasting and we have already ordered our machine. Besides we will be introducing a couple of new drinks and hosting some events.

10. Would you ever think about opening a second location? If so, where? Definitely yes. I think Kuwait City has enough cafes so we would consider locations near Mahboula. Also, we plan to go elsewhere in the region like Oman, Qatar, and so on.

THESE 5 AB MOVES ARE BETTER THAN CRUNCHES… Jamie & Alana Karehana

A

lthough the basic crunch is still popular, by now it’s pretty well known that this outdated exercise is not the most effective way to flatten and strengthen your abs. It doesn’t activate your core muscles to the extent that other exercises do, it can hurt your back, and the small motion doesn’t do much by way of calorie burning.

So why are you still doing crunches? What the basic ab crunch does have going for it is its no-equipment, onthe-go nature. You could pop down onto the ground in a park, a hotel room, at the beach or at the gym to crank out a round of crunches wherever you happen to be. Not the most effective but, until now, the most convenient. It’s time to upgrade your default, basic crunch to a more modern, resultsdriven exercise. Below we have the most cutting-edge, no equipment ab exercise to get you one step closer to those washboard abs that you’ve been dreaming about.

Better Than Crunches #1: The Plank To perform a plank, place your forearms on the ground with your elbows aligned below your shoulders, and your arms parallel to your body shoulder-width apart. Squeeze your core and pay attention to keeping your back flat. Focus on pulling your belly button in as you hold the position for 2 minutes.

Better Than Crunches #2: Scissor Kick To perform a scissor kick, lie with your back on the floor and your arms extended to the sides with your palms facing down. With a slight bend in your knees, lift your legs so that your heels are 6 inches off the ground. Lift your left leg up to about a 45-degree angle (with your right leg still lowered) until your heel is about 2-3 inches from the ground. Switch movements by raising your right leg while lowering your left leg. Squeeze your midsection and focus on your breathing as you perform 60-90 seconds of the exercise.

Better Than Crunches #3: V-Ups To perform a v-up, lie down with your back on the floor and extend your 054

JUNE 2017

arms behind your head. The back of your hands should lightly touch the floor while your palms face the ceiling. Keep your feet close together and point your toes toward the ceiling. Lift your legs up, keeping them straight at the same time that you raise your upper body off the floor and reach for your toes. Exhale and squeeze your abdominal muscles as you reach for your toes, before slowly lowering yourself back down to the starting position. Repeat a series of 12-20 repetitions.

Better Than Crunches #4: Reverse Crunch To perform a reverse crunch, lie on the floor with your feet flat on the floor and hands behind your head. Press your lower back into the floor and pull in your belly button as you lift your feet off the floor. Keep your knees bent at a 90-degree angle and pull into your chest so that your tailbone raises off the ground, and at the same time lift your shoulder blades off the floor. Focus on squeezing your abs to perform the movement. Slowly lower your shoulders, hips and legs to the starting position, keeping your feet just above the floor. Repeat the movement for 12-20 repetitions while squeezing your abs and focusing on your breathing.

Better Than Crunches #5: Russian Twist To perform a Russian twist, lie on the floor with your knees bent at a 90-degree angle while raising your upper body off the ground. Exhale while you twist your torso to the right side until your arms are parallel with the floor. Pull your belly button in and squeeze, then slowly move back to the starting position. Repeat on the left side and continue to repeat both sides for 60-90 seconds. There you have it, 5 modern, results-driven abdominal exercises that you can perform anywhere! Aim to work your abs at least twice a week for the best results. It’s worth noting that while strengthening your abdominal muscles is a great way to tighten your waist, none of the amazing muscle tone will show if your body fat is above 20 percent. In order to shed the fat, join our Karehanakitchen 21 or 28 day meal plans or purchase our travel workout e-book designed to get you into shape. ATYAB AL-SHATTI

“This job gives me a reason to live and a cause to fight for”

When it comes to legal issues, Atyab Al-Shatti speaks for those who can’t be heard; particularly those whose language restrictions prevent them from understanding the law. But she’s not just a ‘legal eagle’. Atyab is also a journalist and author with international ambitions. And she never leaves home without a book.

057

Please introduce yourself to our readers: My name is Atyab Al-Shatti, an ambitious Kuwaiti woman and a lawyer. As a journalist I write for a local Arabic and an English newspaper. I am also the author of two published books. Tell us about your education: I studied at Oxford Elementary School in Kuwait. When I had to join high school my parents signed me in a public school so I could be more involved with the Arab education system. I graduated with a high GPA that helped me get into law school in Kuwait University. Did you always know you wanted to be a lawyer? My dream was always to be a lawyer. I remember my study mates back in our college days when they would write lists of what kind of jobs they wanted to do once they had graduated. They used to worry about it but I never had one of these lists. I always knew what I wanted to be. Being a lawyer is like being a messenger for justice and a rescuer for the people who are facing injustice. This job gives me a reason to live and a cause to fight for. What was your initial experience in law practice? My initial experience was practicing criminal law. What are you doing now as a lawyer? I followed up working in criminal law and I'm also working on family law and the commercial law for now. Tell us more about the campaign you are promoting? I have noticed that expats are facing language barriers when it comes to understanding their legal rights and obligations in Kuwait. It says by law that all individuals have to keep up with the latest updates but they won't be able to acknowledge these law updates due to the language difference. Some of them are surprised by a judgment or a legal settlement, later finding out they have signed papers to waive their financial or legal rights without knowing that they actually did so because it was all written in Arabic. So I started this campaign through the ‘legal eagle’ weekly article in Arab Times. Each week I talk about a different sector of law and try to raise the legal awareness of the readers. I have also worked with Kuwait TV 2 channel on their Hala Kuwait program to present a legal segment. You have also written some books. Can you tell us more about them? Sure! The first book is called ‘An esquire reading the pain of men’. It’s a novel about how some women misuse the family law against men. This is a real issue that lots of men are actually facing in Kuwait. Due to family law, women get to have several kinds of alimonies. One of these is called ‘frozen alimony’ where the woman could have an amount of money 058

JUNE 2017

every month if her husband is unable to prove he was giving her alimony and satisfying her financial needs for the last two years. This matter is really tricky! How would a man prove that he has provided her with the money? Should the male spouse keep receipts of what he buys or from the restaurants he takes his wife to? Is marriage based on evidence or is it based on trust and sharing responsibilities? Unfortunately, some women misuse this law to claim money they don't deserve. That was the main subject of the novel. The second book is called ‘Monologues of the Moon’ and it’s poetry. What has been your biggest success so far? My biggest success was using my article space in a local newspaper to speak for those who can't be heard and to show my perspective in a lot of matters that I am against. The articles that I write in the newspaper are the space where I feel free to criticize and point out some of the issues that are happening wrongly - in my point of view of course. If you couldn't work in the law, what would you be? If I couldn't work in law I would definitely be a journalist who stands for the truth and gives the real story! What are some of your other hobbies? Reading and swimming. What are your future plans and what would you like to ultimately achieve in life? I'm thinking of working internationally in the future by joining an international law firm. What is one thing that you discovered in real practice that your law school didn’t teach you? The actual barrier that expats are facing in Kuwait, which is language. Unfortunately law school made it seem like the law is knowledgeable to everyone and that language is never a reason to not know the law updates. What are three things you don’t leave your house without? I don't leave the house without perfume, my civil ID and a book. Which is your favourite travel destination and why? Turkey, Istanbul. It's the country of my origins and I'm familiar with it. What are your three best pieces of career advice for law students and/or new lawyers? Never depend on someone to do your work for you. Always be a hard worker. Love what you do because once you love it you will achieve the best. Your message for us at CP magazine: Keep shining! Awesome teamwork !

Top Five for

Munich Jim West

Willkomen! In the luscious countryside of Bavaria you will find breathtaking castles, black forests and Bavaria state capital and third largest city in Germany; Munich. Home to one of the world’s largest food and drink festivals, Oktoberfest, Munich has a lot more to offer than just great food and drink. 060

JUNE 2017

1. the MUST see... You are in the city headquarters of BMW! So of course the ‘must see’ is the BMW Museum! See the history of the brand and the superb German engineering that made their engines race throughout the years. http://www.bmw-welt.com/en 2. the MUST eat… It can be hard to say which is the best restaurant, but there is an easy solution - Viktualienmarkt. Viktualienmarkt is an area in downtown of over 140 stalls offering everything under the sun with regards to food. Take a long stroll through Bavarian history and culture via your eyes and stomach.

4. the MUST stay… If you are in town for Oktoberfest and want to be within walking distance of the fairgrounds look to the Sofitel Munich Bayerpost next to the main train station. Don’t miss out on their wonderful spa. Yet for those with a preference for utmost in luxury, look to the Mandarin Oriental. In either case you’d better book months in advance. Seriously, hotels fill up very quickly. http://www.sofitel-munich.com/

3. the MUST shop… For that unique gift for someone or yourself why not wander around some of the best flea markets in Germany? Ask at your hotel for Flomarkt (also check the dates as they vary), there are locations throughout the city. Also try Nachtflohmarkt which are open at night.

5. the MUST do off the beaten path… Walt Disney drew his inspiration for Sleeping Beauty’s Castle from the royal castle of Ludwig II. Neuschwanstein Castle is less than a two hour drive and well worth a day trip to see it in person as pictures cannot do it justice. http://www.neuschwanstein.de/englisch/palace/

MY CITY STREETS BY: SHADAN AL HAMDAN

“I like photographs of people in their natural essence” Shadan Al Hamdan appreciates the little things in the life. This, together with her eye for detail, allows her to capture and document those candid moments which to others, may go un-noticed.

Hi, please introduce yourself to our readers: My name is Shadan Al Hamdan. I'm a 20 year old Kuwaiti female. Between getting my Bachelor's degree and working on a recent small business, @prnt.kw, which I co-own with my friend, I like to spend my time with friends, family, travelling and exploring the city.

Tell us about your education. What are you currently studying? I'm currently studying Civil Engineering at Kuwait University.

How did you become interested in street photography and what got you started? Who was your influence/inspiration? Photography has always been a hobby of mine, even 068

JUNE 2017

before I got into the whole street photography scene. I've always loved documenting and keeping track of photos I shared with loved ones. Taking pictures of everything, no matter how little or irrelevant they may seem to others, was a simple way of me documenting beautiful days and memories. Slowly, with time, I became inspired and felt the need to document everything and everyone around me. I guess everyone around me was an inspiration that lead to my love for street photography.

Do you ever feel like you are a woman in a man’s world with street photography? Not when I'm outside of Kuwait but unfortunately in Kuwait, most of the time I do. As a woman, walking around alone in the city with my camera isn't what society is used to. Also, lots of the places I go to when exploring the city involve mostly men. It's hard finding women, especially locals, walking around the city; and when you do, it's

Photographed by: Ibrahim Al Rekhais

usually risky and hard to take a photograph of them. But I fully accept the challenge and hope to document more of how life is for women in Kuwait.

started looking forward to exploring the city more and taking more pictures.

How do you describe your photographic style?

I don't really look for subjects. Anyone in the street could be my subject, without them knowing at times. They could just be getting on with their day and I'd see something and find a shot in between their actions.

I'd describe it as spontaneous and raw. I like photographs of people in their natural essence.

How and when did you start @mycitystreets_ account on Instagram? I started @mycitystreets_ on instagram in February 2016. At the beginning, I used to post a couple of street photos on my personal account, until a friend of mine encouraged me to create this account and post more street photos there. I'm glad I did because as a result, I got excited and

How do you find your subjects?

What are the factors you consider before deciding to take your photos? My most important factor is that the subject isn't aware. I like it more when the subject is at ease and doing whatever it is they were doing that caught my eye, inspiring me to capture the moment.

www.cpmagazine.net

069

What kind of equipment do you use? I don't like carrying equipment around with me. I like to keep it light and easy, so just my fujixt10 camera and iphone and I'm good to go!

What is your favourite street photography experience? Is there a particular image of yours that has a weird/wonderful back story? One time when I was driving, I saw a tiny open door in an abandoned area as I approached the city. It caught my eye and of course, being the curious photographer I am, I changed my route, parked my car and got my camera ready. At first I was a bit scared because I was alone and was contemplating whether to go in or not. I decided to go in anyway and as I did, I was amazed to find a bunch of ice-cream bikes just parked there! It was something I definitely didn't expect to find behind the tiny door of an old abandoned building.

What continually drives you to photograph in the streets? It's the constant motion, the way people are every day, in their candid situations. Also, to me, the city facade and natural sunlight adds a great value when it comes to street photography.

What kind of impression do you hope to leave upon others who see your photographs? I hope when people see my photographs they start paying more attention to little things in life and start appreciating the beauty in everything.

070

JUNE 2017

You shoot both black and white and colour. Which do you prefer? I personally prefer black and white, it's timeless and it gives a more aesthetic pleasure.

What is your number one street photography tip our readers can use to improve immediately? Try to blend in. Don't wear something too flashy that will cause the subjects to pay attention to you more, it will cause them to leave their natural state. You'll get more candid shots if no-one notices you're around! Also, try to travel light. You don't want to be walking around with lots of things in your hand. A camera and a backpack with cash and water will be more than enough.

Any favourite cities you would like to capture? Yes, I would love to shoot in Cuba and India at the moment.

Your message for us at CP magazine: Thank you for selecting me to be part of the magazine! I hope everyone likes my Monthly Street Photography contribution!

Your favourite quote on photography: ‘To me, photography is an art of observation, it is about finding something interesting in an ordinary place. I found it has little to do with the things you see, and everything to do with the way you see them.’ - Elliot Erwitt

Thank you! And do keep on doing what you are doing! We love it!

Haitham.Obaid

Haitham Obaid “Sport is a way of life” Haitham Obaid works on the assumption that if he is happy, his listeners are happy. It’s an assumption that works pretty well - until he expresses an opinion on their football team!

Please introduce yourself to our readers: I’m Haitham Obaid. I am Omani, born and raised in UAE. Currently, I’m the Radio Presenter of Daily Show Xtra Sports on Star FM. My motto is to be passionate about what you do in life. For me, sport is a lifestyle; a way of life.

Tell us about your education: I graduated in Media and Mass Communication from Oman University.

What was your motivation behind learning French? Dalida and Alain Delon! When I was younger, I would listen to all their songs; I was so influenced by the French culture, it seemed really interesting. The music was so soft, romantic and dreamy, very unlike the English kind. When I graduated from university, I was chosen to study French at Cavilam University in France. I spent around three months there and I was able to learn French.

Who or what inspired you to get into presenting sports on the radio? Football is my passion along with my love for sports media. I was only 12 when I covered a football match! I was in secondary school and it was the Gulf Championship in Abu Dhabi. Before that, we used to watch all football games on all TV channels but now it’s the opposite; we only have one channel exclusively covering one championship. 076

JUNE 2017

As I watched a lot of football at an early age, I was able to learn from various experts; from their opinions and analysis. They all inspired me. I was actively learning while watching them. I learnt that entertainment can be presented professionally and whatever it is that you love, can be presented. At university, I studied TV, Radio and PR. Soon after, I started in Oman Radio as a trainee. I created my own show idea and submitted it with script, prize ideas, commercial ideas etc. They loved it! Not many know this, but I started on AM frequency and not FM like today. Thanks to God, I am now so happy doing my daily show. I have done it for nine years covering all sports aspects as a lifestyle.

Which sports do your personally enjoy? Swimming. I used to play football but unfortunately had to stop because of a knee injury.

What is the most challenging part of presenting sports on the radio? The most challenging part is that once you criticize or express your opinion on a team/game, a lot of people will get upset with you. The Arab audience especially, gets really angry when you criticize their team. Some even go on to assume that you side with the other team. I always like to be neutral in my opinions. I prefer to speak without being attached to any team. Other people are obsessed and very harsh. They translate every word I say into me being against their team. This, so far, has been the biggest challenge in presenting, football especially.

What has made your show successful and different from the rest? The interviews with celebrities that people love! I have met many of these and I feel so happy to have helped take their message to their fans. My audience loves these inspirational and motivational messages. I have heard many celebs like Cristiano Ronaldo, Dwight Yorke (the star of Manchester United), Peter Schmeichel (the goal keeper at Manchester United), Patrick Vieira (the French star of Arsenal and Manchester City). Also WWE. I have met many famous names, people who love presenting sports. In Formula One, I met Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. I love asking them questions, advice and inspiration to motivate my audience. They give out wonderful messages showing dedication and passion, taking sports as a way of life for positivity and success.

What is the most satisfying aspect of your job? The most important aspect is to be happy doing what you are doing, and to do it enthusiastically. This fact, that I love what I do, gives me immense satisfaction and happiness; in turn reflecting on my work, making people who listen to me happy.

What are your future plans and what’s coming up next from you? I’m working now on a new TV show, the details of which will be shared very soon.

What are some of your other hobbies? Cooking. I also love listening to music and I love to travel.

You have also been very successful on TV with your show ‘Howa’. Do you prefer radio or TV?

What is the best advice you have ever received and who was it from?

Both, I really enjoy both! It’s a difficult choice to make!

A friend of mine once told me that I should always have my own plans - like a plan A, B or C - because if I did not have one, I would always be part of someone else’s plan. It is always important to have a goal; a plan that you work towards so that you measure and are motivated to achieve it.

Can you share with us the biggest blunder that happened live on radio and how you overcame it? One time a famous sports personality who presents football games promised to come for an interview on my show. He even went ahead and recorded an ad promo in his own voice telling listeners to join the show with me, Haitham Obaid, at the proper show timings and date. Last minute, as I was live on air, he did not show up! I still remember all the lovely messages I received from my audience telling me not to be sad and upset; that they wanted to listen to me and not the sports personality. I was really touched! It was one of the best feelings.

JUNE 2017

What’s your favourite food? I love healthy food that is also delicious. I am a huge fan of seafood and generally Italian cuisine.

A phrase that you use far too often is… Sport is a way of a life.

The most surprising thing that's ever happened to you is… At the beginning of my career, Ahmad Hussam Mido was a well-known Arabic player who played in the Italian team. He has played against teams like Real Madrid, Roma and Manchester. Anyway, the very first time I met him, he expressed his amazement at my knowledge of sports. I was glad and told him about my show the next morning. He was so nice and told me that he would come to my studio the next morning. It was a surprise and a good one at that!

What would be your advice to someone who wants to make it into sports presenting? He or she should be passionate about sports. More than taking it as a job, it should be their love and dedication. Particularly in the case of sports presenting, it should be fun and you should love what you do. It has to be entertaining for fans and listeners but it also needs you to be professional at the same time. It should reflect your enthusiasm as you enjoy talking about an activity or sport that you love. It should be nothing but happiness!

Your message for your fans and our readers in Kuwait: I will be seeing all of you soon, for sure!

Your message for us at CP magazine: Thank you for this wonderful opportunity.

In a nutshell, your philosophy is… Happy wife, happy life!

ummer is officially here and with temperatures soaring, a change of wardrobe is very much needed. During summer, our wardrobes tend to have less layers and also show a little more skin than our winter or autumn ones. The question now is how do we feel about that? Are we conscious of our bodies and not sure about what to wear when summer approaches? We will be discussing these issues and more - during our June makeover, which is full of tips on how to dress to impress this summer!

Photography: Vania Attieh (www.vania-photography.com) Hair & Makeup: Maison de Joelle Aman's outfit:The Kooples Aman’s earrings: Wafa by wafa (IG: wafabywafa) Carla & Marie’s Wardrobe: The Kooples Image Consultants: Carla Otero & Marie Auffret (IG: thestylistes) Location: Jumeirah Islands 086

JUNE 2017

Aman, please introduce yourself to our readers: Hello, my name is Aman (pronounced Um-un). I live and work as a teacher in Dubai and have done so for the past couple of years. It's been really great to avoid the fridge-like temperatures of Canada in the winters, but I'm also relieved to avoid the summers here.

What made you feel you needed the help of Carla & Marie and what do you expect from this experience? It’s been a long school year and any teacher can tell you that by the end of school you look and feel like a mess - especially when you work with little ones! I was feeling run down by the heat and wanted Carla and Marie to make me feel taken care of. I wanted to step out of my norm and that’s exactly what I got from them - even when I tried to resist!

Now, let the makeover begin! COLOUR ANALYSIS We would like you to answer the following questions: lWhat are your favourite and least favourite colours when shopping for clothing and accessories? lDoes colour have an emotional meaning to you, in the sense that depending on your mood you dress in one colour or another? We are going to answer these questions by analysing our client Aman. After testing warm and cool colour fabrics near Aman’s face, we discover that cool colours like blue, white, purple, black and pink are her colours, whereas yellow, green and browns are a no-go for her.

Now, we wonder whether Aman normally buys these colours or not. Her answer to this is both yes and no. Our client tends to play it safe by choosing neutral colours like black and white, which are her right colours, but why not be a little bolder when it comes to colours she can wear? After this thorough colour analysis and our chat with Aman, we believe she will start opening up to the wonder of cool winter colours. Moving on to the second topic of colour, don’t you feel that there are days you want to hide a few extra pounds by wearing black? Or when you have a date night or a birthday party, you may choose to wear red or pink for example? Well we couldn't agree more, and so too does Aman. In fact, there are several studies around the topic of colour psychology, where it is proven that colour choices influence perception and how we come across at first sight. So our advice is to search for the meaning of each colour, so you can send the right message depending on the occasion! www.cpmagazine.net

BODY SHAPE ANALYSIS We all have different body shapes, which we should embrace and make it work to our advantage. How do we do that? By choosing those garments and accessories that enhance our best body parts and camouflage those Our client has admitted she adores yellow gold we are not so confident about. In order to make the but what has our silver vs. gold analysis revealed? most of our appearance and our body, the body shape Our silver and gold fabrics clearly indicate that analysis plays a key role. Aman looks so fresh and radiant with silver. Let’s analyse Anneken's proportions. When measuring In other words, silver and white gold in her her, we realise that her shoulders, waist and hips are accessories and garments are a definite winner, pretty much in line, which indicates that Anneken is a whereas yellow gold ages her and makes her look ‘Rectangle' body type. The amazing part of her shape is pale. Therefore, we advise our client to stay away that she can wear ruffles, big prints, oversized cuts and from this precious yellow metal . big or small belts. In other words, any form or shape that creates volume, rectangle shape people can take. In the case of our client, what we aim to create is the illusion of bigger shoulders and hips but smaller waist. We have achieved this by: lGiving her an oversized t-shirt with a big print, which instantly creates volume on the upper body. lBy adding a belt, we accentuate her waist. lFinally, a pencil skirt with textured fabric also creates the illusion of more volume, even though the skirt is a straight cut.

GOLD vs. SILVER ANALYSIS

HAIR AND MAKEUP

A makeover is never complete without a good hair and make-up transformation, and it doesn’t necessarily need to be a dramatic change or a complete transformation. Our aim has always been to flatter the person from every aspect, by bringing to the outside all the beauty from within. As we do every month, we have taken our client to our favourite salon, Maison de Joelle. As expected the hair stylists and make-up artists have done a super job! Let’s go through the details of the beautifying process. Aman came to us with pitch black hair and gorgeous natural curls. At first, we were wowed by the quality of hair and the amount of it. Following a chat with her, we determined that keeping the length was very important as it gave her personality. Also, Aman is very tall so it made sense to keep her hair long. When it came to hair colour, we stayed within the cool tonality and chose an aubergine shade that not only softens her complexion but gives her an extra spark that makes this choice extra special. Make-up also had to be in line with her cool undertone, hence a pink shade of lipstick and black eyeliner was a winner. The colours blend so well that she looks so fresh and natural. Isn't she a beauty?

JUNE 2017

‘THE OUTFIT & PRINTS CONCEPT’ Summer 2017 comes strong with one of @thestylistes favourite trends: floral prints, so we decided to embrace it with this month's makeover outfit. When it comes to Aman’s outfit selection, we had no hesitation! A floral on floral overall look with matching jacket and trousers is bang on trend. This not only looks stunning on our client’s gorgeous hour glass figure, but it gives her that 'wow'' factor we were looking for. By breaking the floral print with a solid salmon tank top, we have given her an extra bit of style. We feel that this combination of layers, prints and textures is daring, stylish and a must have this summer. But let’s not forget the accessories! We believe the right details can transform a good look into a ‘killer look.’ The elegant earrings elongate Aman's face, the belt adds detail to her outfit and accentuates her waist, and finally the hat brings out the chic bohemian look we were looking for. We are fully aware that bold prints take time to digest and get used to. That’s why we want to give you a few tips to embrace prints of any sort and incorporate them into your wardrobe ASAP! lInvestigate and choose your favourite prints: whether floral, stripes, animal prints, geometric, arabesque, there are hundreds available in the market. Experiment, try them on and have fun! lIf you have a curvy body, select small to medium size prints to appear smaller. The smaller the print, the smaller you appear. The opposite applies to slim body types, bigger prints will add volume to your appearance. lMixing prints is incredibly stylish but be careful as it can also kill your look. An easy tip is: 'match colours and mix prints’ or 'match prints and mix colours.’ For example, combine a floral jacket with striped trousers but keep them all in shades of blue and white. Don’t be frightened! Once prints are understood, they definitely add personality and individuality to your look; just start by familiarising yourself with them. We hope you enjoyed this makeover and found our tips useful. We wish you a wonderful summer!

AMAN’S FEEDBACK: At first it was all excitement over what clothes I'll get to try on and what they might do to my hair. But then the reality of not having control sunk in. Fortunately, my worries were calmed by Clara and Marie on our first clothing trial. They had me try on the suit I'm wearing - and let's just say I wasn't a fan! So they allowed me to take things back to my comfort zone with jeans and a white tank (styled amazingly by them of course). All was great in my mind by the time we left the fitting. When I got home my friends convinced me to try something new and to trust the stylists. After seeing their well styled Instagram pictures it convinced me to let these ladies take over my look completely. So when I arrived to the photo shoot I was pleasantly surprised that they had their original choice of outfit for me ready, in case I changed my mind. It was as if they knew how my mind worked! Trusting them was the best idea. I loved my total look by the end. From the hat, earrings and even to the full floral suit, which I had resisted in the beginning.

THE RADO TRUE THINLINE FOR TOPNOTCH STYLE ON AND OFF COURT

TISSOT T-WAVE IT’S TIME TO LET IT FLOW There is a certain grace in the way a silk ribbon swirls in the wind. It is that elegance and lightness that inspired the design of the Tissot T-Wave. The curves of the case and lugs follow the harmonious lines formed by the fluid movement of a ribbon. The pure dial features refined details such as hands resembling skeletonised leaves and a teardrop index set with white or black mother-of-pearl at 12 o’clock. The Tissot T-Wave is a piece of jewellery that can be worn at any occasion, adding a touch of sophistication to a daily outfit or complimenting a cocktail dress for a special occasion.

The ways it swerves The collection offers a choice of designs. Some may prefer the simplicity of a pure dial with a satin or aventurine effect, while other will like a touch of design with a discrete yet elegant ribbon, unveiling iridescent and satin reflections on the mother-of-pearl or satin face. For a more glamorous touch, ladies will appreciate the models that highlight the design touches with top wesselton diamonds.

As an avid supporter of tennis, Swiss watchmaker Rado understands that pursuing an active lifestyle shouldn't have to mean sacrificing style. This is why the brand is expanding its True Thinline collection with two new timepieces suitable for a variety of looks both on and off court. The Rado True Thinline collection is known for combining a super slim profile with beautiful, scratch resistant high-tech ceramic construction. This sporty duo is no different, measuring in at just 4.9 mm thin and featuring a polished case and bracelet in either white or plasma hightech ceramic. Blue details round out the sporty-chic look, with blue hands providing a pop of colour on the white model and a deep blue dial contrasting handsomely with the rich grey shine of the plasma piece.

For style that’s hard to beat Powered by a movement of just 1 mm, the True Thinline is Rado's thinnest high-tech ceramic timepiece – an accessory that keeps you agile with a barely-there feel on the wrist. Minimalist in design and spirit, the slim timepiece pairs well with légère looks that are both smart and comfortable. The sleek True Thinline offers all the same beauty and performance as Rado's other high-tech ceramic wristwatches. In addition to being lightweight and hypoallergenic, high-tech ceramic is also known for its incredible scratch resistance, making the True Thinline an ideal companion to accompany you throughout all manner of athletic endeavors.

NOT A SCIENTIST: HOW POLITICIANS MISTAKE, MISREPRESENT, AND UTTERLY MANGLE SCIENCE by Dave Levitan

by Kate Moore

In 1980, Ronald Reagan created one of the dumbest talking points of all time:

As World War I raged across the globe, hundreds of young women toiled away at the radium-dial factories, where they painted clock faces with a mysterious new substance called radium. Assured by their bosses that the luminous material was safe, the women themselves shone brightly in the dark, covered from head to toe with the glowing dust. With such a coveted job, these “shining girls” were considered the luckiest alive—until they began to fall mysteriously ill. As the fatal poison of the radium took hold, they found themselves embroiled in one of America’s biggest scandals and a groundbreaking battle for workers’ rights.

“I’m not a scientist, but . . .” Since then, politicians have repeatedly committed egregious transgressions against scientific knowledge prefaced by this seemingly innocuous phrase. Yet, as science journalist Dave Levitan reveals, that line is just the tip of the melting iceberg when it comes to rhetorical tools wielded to attack scientific findings that don’t cooperate with political agendas. Just listen to Mike Huckabee dismiss climate change as “a sunburn,” Donald Trump suggest that vaccines cause autism, or Todd Akin’s infamous invention of “legitimate rape.”

LOSING YOUR HUMANITY

The deep and enduring friendship between Vincent and Theo Van Gogh shaped both brothers' lives. Confidant, champion, sympathizer, friend, Theo supported Vincent as he struggled to find his path in life. They shared everything, swapping stories of lovers and friends, successes and disappointments, dreams and ambitions. Meticulously researched, drawing on the 658 letters Vincent wrote to Theo during his lifetime, Deborah Heiligman weaves a tale of two lives intertwined and the love of the Van Gogh brothers.

At age thirty-four, Jo Piazza got her romantic-comedy ending when she met the man of her dreams on a boat in the Galápagos Islands and was engaged three months later. But before long, Jo found herself riddled with questions. How do you make a marriage work in a world where you no longer need to be married? How does an independent, strong-willed feminist become someone’s partner all the time? In the tradition of writers such as Nora Ephron and Elizabeth Gilbert, award-winning journalist and nationally bestselling author Jo Piazza writes a provocative memoir of a real first year of marriage that will forever change the way we look at matrimony.

As battle cries of the American Revolution echo in the distance, servants flutter about preparing for one of New York society’s biggest events: the Schuylers’ grand ball. Descended from two of the oldest and most distinguished bloodlines in New York, the Schuylers are proud to be one of their fledgling country’s founding families, and even prouder still of their three daughters Angelica, with her razorsharp wit; Peggy, with her dazzling looks; and Eliza, whose beauty and charm rival that of both her sisters, though she’d rather be aiding the colonists’ cause than dressing up for some silly ball.

GEEKERELLA

HOURGLASS: TIME, MEMORY, MARRIAGE

by Ashley Poston

by Dani Shapiro

When geek girl Elle Wittimer sees a cosplay contest sponsored by the producers of Starfield, she has to enter. First prize is an invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. Elle’s been scraping together tips from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck behind her stepmother’s back, and winning this contest could be her ticket out once and for all not to mention a fangirl’s dream come true.

Hourglass is an inquiry into how marriage is transformed by time-abraded, strengthened, shaped in miraculous and sometimes terrifying ways by accident and experience. With courage and relentless honesty, Dani Shapiro opens the door to her house, her marriage, and her heart, and invites us to witness her own marital reckoning a reckoning in which she confronts both the life she dreamed of and the life she made, and struggles to reconcile the girl she was with the woman she has become.

I HEART NEW YORK

W

hen you ask people about their favourite city in the world, it seems fitting to have New York City in the top five, at least. It is one of my favourite cities for countless reasons. To give you a bit of history, New York city was the first city in the world to start the I Heart.. trade mark back in 1970, as part of a marketing campaign to increase tourism. Now you see it all around the world. Many of us might not have known we had New York to thank for that. There are so many reasons why New York is one of my favorite cities (I won't bore you with them!), so when my best friend gave me a book called I Heart New York it seemed very fitting and I couldn’t wait to see what the book had to offer. I Heart New York (2001) was written by British author Lindsey Kelk. Lindsey started writing this novel after returning to London from her vacation in New York City and was struggling to shake off the blues. This then triggered a series of I Heart books, each about other favourite cities around the world. Lindsey's famous titles include, I Heart London (2012), I Heart Paris (2010), I Heart Christmas (2013), A Girl's Best Friend (2015), plus many more (published as well as e-books). In this particular book, Anglea takes the first flight from London to New York after catching her boyfriend cheating on her. She falls in love with the fabulous city

and, as a result of a New York City make-over, finds herself in the middle of a relationship dilemma. This book pays tribute to everything New York is all about; the fabulous lifestyle the city has to offer, as well as the down side of it. It is a light read for all Big Apple lovers, including yours truly. The book is also a tribute to Carrie Bradshaw’s character in Sex and the City, set in the 90s New York that all women fell in love with and still talk about today.

WRITING MOVIE

WRONGS moviewrongs.com

T

his is a film that from its announcement stirred a fervent fan base. Many were excited to see Hollywood’s take on a beloved classic, but still ahead of its time, anime film from 1995 which itself is based on a manga comic series written by Shirow Masamune. This remake took three screenplay writers. Three writers who overloaded this film with needless history of self themes that the original dealt with better.

Here come the spoilers. This film lacks soul. Between the acting and the story it’s hard to pin down exactly where the breakdowns begin. The story takes place in the near future where humans are augmented by cyber technology. People can elevate their strength, mind and other senses. Major, played by Scarlet Johannsson, is the first of her kind where a full body ‘shell’ is made to house a human brain (ghost). She has been wiped of her past and memories and told she is a victim of terrorism. This drives the purpose for her to work for Section Nine which deals with counter terrorism cases. Section Nine in this film is dealing with the assassinations of top scientists working for Hanka Corporation which created Major and other robotic projects for the world. Major is teamed with her partner Batou, played quite superbly by Pilou Asbaek. In his character’s case I felt he actually showed more emotion when he had his eyes replaced by cybernetics for the second half of the film. Also Takeshi Kitano is a joy to see in this film and has a couple of good scenes. Now for the CGI (computer generated imagery). While in some cases 102

it is very well done, and sometimes evokes a quasi anime feel, it just doesn’t amaze as much as the 1995 anime film did. Perhaps it‘s just me, but I felt the animation from the 1995 film augmented the story, with every frame and colour evoking emotions for the characters and fully setting scenes. In this remake you do not get the broader sense of government corruption, but instead the writers decided to write in a mother for Major and go with a different ending to the story. Major (pun intended) fail. Now how can we fix this movie wrong with writing? Focus the film more on Major’s sense of self and identity. The scene with the woman when Major asks her how her hand feels on her face is going in the right direction. Let her rediscover what the sense of being a human is and how her mind is slowly drawn to the robotic side. Get rid of every scene that stresses her need to consent to have logs or memories erased. I feel the writers were focusing on privacy and this was just a huge distraction from bigger and better themes to focus on. The antagonist, Kuze, the screenwriter’s take on the puppet master, just tears down this film further. The ending should mirror exactly the 1995 ending with her merging with the puppet master and both existing in the same shell. It was perfectly imperfect. Again Hollywood has to give us the pretty and clean ending; something Asian cinema doesn’t shy away from i.e. thought provoking endings or endings where there isn’t a perfect happy ending. Here it feels like a cheesy call for a sequel. A sequel I hope they don’t get funding for. In conclusion, if you want a film that is flashy and of no real substance, watch this film. If you want a film that will amaze you, blow your mind and make you question the relationship of humans and computers; see the 1995 anime film.

GOLBAHAR KHANA

Excellent new Persian restaurant in Kuwait

Farah Harb

Kuwait is known to have a variety of restaurants with different cuisines from around the world. Recently, my friend and I were looking for a place to eat and decided to try Golbahar Khana, a Persian restaurant at Gate Mall. 104

JUNE 2017

Not only was the food top-notch, but we very much enjoyed the comfortable chairs, the calm environment and the hospitality of the restaurant’s staff. Also, I found it very interesting that the chef has 20 years of experience with Persian food, which adds to the credibility of the restaurant and explains how the food was so on point! Read further about my review on every dish as well as the restaurant’s service. Because the place was chic, we expected the prices on the menu to be a little over average. However, to our surprise, not only was the food tasteful and made with high-quality products, the prices were extremely affordable; making it hard not to write a brilliant review on the restaurant! We started our lunch meal with their outstanding appetizers: Hummus, Dolmeh (stuffed vine leaves) and Kashk Badenjam (spiced-up egg plant blend with crispy onions on top). The appetizers were served with delicious white Persian bread that remained soft even after it chilled. To wash away the day's heat, we also ordered fresh lemon-mint juice that was very refreshing. NOW allow me to divulge into the main dishes. Just to try their very appetizing menu, we ordered three meals that ended up being the highlight of our day! Being a foodie myself, I have tried a number of Persian food joints, but nothing stood out like Golbahar's dazzling grilled platters. We ordered Chapli Kabab (minced baby lamb cuts served with grilled veggies, saffron rice and salad), a specialty that only Golbahar in Kuwait serves, and it was absolutely delicious! Not only was the meat flavorful with an appropriate amount of fat, the platter itself was filling for those who love their food side-condiments! The rice was also well cooked and served with tomato sauce (Daqoos), the salad was unique and the plate was very presentable. www.cpmagazine.net

Next we tried their Chello Jojeh Barg (Persian Shish-tawuk, or marinated and grilled chicken skewers) which was also served with salad, saffron rice, garlic sauce and grilled veggies. The chicken was very well marinated and grilled to an appropriate point that made the meat tender and ready to devour. Our next food item was the tender and juicy Chello Kabab Bargh platter (meat chops served on skewers) with saffron rice, tomato sauce, grilled veggies and salad. Each bite was tender and filled with flavor and spice. The restaurant also serves a complimentary side dish of fresh vegetables with pickles and bread, presented by a friendly team of waiters and a very satisfying service. The manager came to the table to ask if everything was okay and to ensure that our orders were complete. All in all, the food was amongst my top picks for grilled platters that come with competitive prices and lots of condiments, just how I like it! After the meal, the restaurant served us complimentary Persian tea that came with saffron-sweetened sticks. Being a tea person myself, I absolutely loved the high quality tea and the sweet saffron sticks that added a nice touch to the flavor. To end the meal on a perfect note, we ordered dessert that was the cherry on top of our meal. We ordered fried-sweet dough balls that were served with saffron sweet sauce in a cup. I loved the food, loved the comfortable seating arrangement, appreciated the staff and would definitely go back there again. I highly recommend that you go there for your date, your anniversary, friends' night out or your simple Friday lunch out with family.

At New Look, Ramadan 2017 is all about sophisticated tailoring pieces for the daytime and dreamy maxi dresses for star-filled nights. Daytime styling is all about the minimalist silhouette, with clean lines and fluid fabrics for a fresh take on sartorial style. Choose a sophisticated jumpsuit in pastel pink or muted grey. Key details to look out for this season include frontal pleats and fabric tie belts. You can channel the trend by pairing a tailored cropped trouser with a printed top in botanical florals. Complete the look with an envelope clutch and a barely-there heel sandal. For a perfect day to night outfit, update your favorite dress with a bohemian kimono in a Nineties-inspired floral print. Accessorize with a multi-layer choker and a pair of open-toe lace-up heels. Attending an event before sundown? Opt for a floaty maxi with frill sleeves in a soft shade of green. Feminine prints are key, with the long sleeve floral maxi promising to be a wardrobe staple for the season ahead. Subtle metallics and cutaway details are the easiest way to channel elegance this Eid, and for a more relaxed take on luxury, try a silver maxi with embellished accessories or a culotte jumpsuit with a lace top layer. This look will work perfectly with pointed pumps, oversized hoop earrings and an embellished sequin clutch to complete the look.

Held in Salmiya at ARGAN Square and amongst a large crowd of spectators, the final competition was fierce and fun at the same time. All eyes were on the young yet highly impressive talent that stood out all the way, the champion of the 2017 Red Bull BC One Kuwait Final who is only sixteen, was keen on participating in Red Bull BC One since 2014 and made his dreams come true. This is only a true testament that one ought to keep believing and that talent can be given wings! B-Boy Tailz came through very challenging battles with other B-Boys, and won the title on his opponent B-Boy Bonny, who also displayed an outstanding performance. In addition, there were magnificent, mind-blowingly major moves made by b-boys Tails, Bonny, Slash, Primo, Reo, Myno, Lazer, Ant, Crush, Denken, Neo, Ace, K-Flex, Zipper, Crimson and B-Girl Zoey, however, one B-Boy stood above the rest and, for the first time, it was B-Boy Tailz. The winner was speechless until encouraged to talk about how it felt to win. “I’m super excited. I can’t believe I actually made it to the World Final in Amsterdam.
