Bahrain Prepares to Host Second International

‘Art Bahrain Across Borders 2017’

B

Building on the tremendous success of Bahrain’s first international art exhibition last year, which hosted acclaimed artists and galleries from across the Middle East, Africa, Europe, the Far East and Asia, the Kingdom is once again gearing up for its second art exhibition run under the umbrella of ‘Art Bahrain Across Borders’ 2017 (ArtBAB 2017). This event will be held from 22nd to 26th of March 2017 at the Bahrain International Exhibition & Convention Centre and hopes to attract attendees from its neighboring states interested to explore Bahrain’s fastgrowing arts landscape. With the regional arts industry gaining momentum and projected growth in this sector set to persevere, ArtBAB2017 aims to capitalize on Bahrain’s status as a niche arts hub and provide a platform for local and regional artists to converge, collaborate, develop and grow, jointly fueling progress and helping to stimulate 14

investment activity and sales. This year, ArtBAB2017 is spearheaded by Tamkeen, Bahrain’s semi-government arm mandated to drive private sector growth, and will be hosted under the Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabika bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of His Majesty the King. International art investment and consultancy firm Art Select (a brand of Art and Spice) has been appointed to manage and execute the event. Art Bahrain Across Borders 2017 supports Tamkeen’s strategic focus to turn local arts into a viable industry for Bahrain by fostering the growth of this sector locally and encouraging the same on a regional level. According to Dr Ebrahim Mohammed Janahi, Chief Executive of Tamkeen, ‘As part of Tamkeen’s efforts in developing the private sector to contribute in the national economy, Tamkeen believes that the art sector has gained

importance as an engine of economic growth, not only locally but across the region. We want to support this sector through initiatives such as ArtBAB, and we hope to steer the arts sector into new levels. The aim is to inspire the local and regional talent and promote art education and skills development by bridging our local artists with their regional and international counterparts, encourage collaborations and foster learning and development from the exchange of ideas with renowned names in the art field’. Further commenting on Tamkeen’s efforts to boost the local art industry, Mrs. Amal Al Kooheji, Chief Operating Officer of Tamkeen explained, ‘ArtBAB is a paradigm of Tamkeen’s new strategic focus; until recently the art sector in Bahrain did not receive the required attention and through initiatives such as ArtBAB we hope to steer it into new heights, inspiring entrepreneurship, art education and local skills development. We want ArtBAB to become a platform for nascent entrepreneurs, budding artists as well as existing galleries and homegrown creatives in Bahrain to showcase their talents to an international audience, learn from the experience of renowned names and equip them with the necessary resources to expand their skills and gain international recognition. We also want to position Bahrain as a prime hub for art and education in the future’. Based on recent industry studies, between 2014-2015, the Middle East witnessed a 5% growth in art sales compared with the US and European markets which were in the minus, and forecasts indicate this region will continue to pursue positive growth in the foreseeable future. Expert international art investment consultancy Art Select, states that the regional art industry is going through a positive transformation driven by its vast talent and Bahrain is well-placed to facilitate growth on a regional scale and provide artists with niche opportunities to drive exposure and sales. Mrs. Kaneka Subberwal, Founder of Art Select, stated ‘Bahrain stands firm in the region as a niche arts hub due to its rich culture and tremendous pool of artists that have for centuries inspired generations of talent. ArtBAB aims to strengthen this core and create a solid base to help propel the local and regional industry internationally through

cross-border exposure, education and collaborations. Bahrain has an established database of international art collectors and individual investors who are always on the watch for exclusive opportunities and emerging talent and this has been key to driving and promoting the arts sector locally. ArtBAB will facilitate this link and act as a catalyst for greater regional investment, motivating this industry forward’. ArtBAB2017 has been designed to embrace and highlight excellence in the local arts sector while uniting the local and global art communities and providing a stage for learning, engagement and the exchange of ideas. The fair will host participants from Bahrain, as well as reputed names from the region and from across the world. Key features will include a Bahraini Pavilion exclusive to 30 Bahraini artists; a Gallery Arena to host local and international galleries; an International Artists Pavilion to display the works of participating artists from across the world; and an art book shop and art merchandising and design section. A specially designed art and educational program titled ‘Talks@ArtBAB’ will also run parallel to the exhibition comprising talks by key artists and panel discussions. All submissions for ArtBAB 2017 have been received and are in the final stages of being reviewed by an expert panel of international judges comprising of Jonathan Watkins, Curator and Museum Director, Chair of Artist Selection; Alistair Hicks, Curator and Writer; Janet Rady, ArtBAB Head of Development and David Hawkins, ArtBAB Head of Outreach and VIP Relations. All exhibitor names will be announced in February 2017. ArtBAB 2017 is a culmination of the Kingdom’s success stories in the realm of the arts and stands testament to Tamkeen’s tremendous efforts over the past couple of years in strengthening the local art sector and furthering Bahraini artist recognition across borders. Tamkeen was a key contributor to the first edition of Bahrain’s international art fair last year and in partnership with Art Select, played a pivotal role in spearheading the Bahrain Art Across Borders (BAAB) initiative in 2016 which saw 17 local artists launch their work in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and exhibit their work internationally. The success of BAAB reaffirmed it as an ideal umbrella to unite local art initiatives empowered by Tamkeen, a prime example being the upcoming ArtBAB 2017. It is worth noting that 7 female Bahraini artists allied with BAAB, went on to represent the country as part of a 30-all female member international touring art exhibition titled ‘I AM’. ‘I AM’ is a major peace-building initiative led by international and interreligious peacebuilding arts NGO CARAVAN, comprising 30 of the Middle East's premier contemporary women artists selected to represent the rich, diverse and pivotal contribution that Middle Eastern women make to the enduring global quest for harmony and peace. The exhibition will open in the spring of 2017 in Jordan at their National Gallery of Fine Arts, then be exhibited in London at St Martin-inthe-Fields on Trafalgar Square, before touring North America from September 2017 until December 2018. ‘I AM’ is being curated by ArtBAB’s Head of Development Janet Rady. A more recent success story is the exclusive ‘Be Bahrain’ Art Week in London which brought together 18 Bahraini artists sponsored by Tamkeen to showcase their work and represent the diversity and vibrancy of the Bahraini art scene in London. ‘Be Bahrain’ Art Week is yet another vertical of BAAB and debuted during a private event at the Lancaster House hosted by the Bahraini Embassy in London in celebration of Bahrain’s National Day. The Be Bahrain initiative featured a tailored week-long agenda including a panel discussion on Bahrain’s deep-rooted artistic heritage and the creative spirit of the Middle East region; a public exhibition of over 35 unique pieces at the Asia House; and a pop-up display and installation of the Annada brand by leading Bahraini designers who have collaborated with over twenty artists from Bahrain and across the region.

GOT WHAT IT TAKES TO GO UP AGAINST THE BEST? Join Red Bull Reign’s 3-On-3 Basketball Tournament on February 15th - 17th

I

n continuation with Red Bull's habit of staging offbeat sports events, Red Bull Reign invites Kuwait’s top basketball players to compete in the ultimate 3-on-3 battle, testing teams’ endurance, skills, teamwork and ability to own their court while trying to accumulate the most points possible to outlast their opponents. Besides other qualifiers happening in 14 other countries this year, the local qualifiers will take place this month, on February 15th and 16th, in Marina Crescent Basketball Courts, concluding with the finals

FEBRUARY 2017

at the same location on February 17th, in partnership with Acqua Eva, GoPro and Marina World. Unlike most 3-on-3 tournaments, Red Bull Reign will push teams to their utter physical and mental limits. The rules of the high endurance, offense-driven tournament are simple: the teams that score the most overall points in each round will advance and continue to compete in the final. The game will be played on a court with one basket. Each team shall consist of three players and one

substitute, with no coach on the playground. The game officials will consist of one or two referees and time/score keepers. Both teams shall warm-up simultaneously prior to the game and a coin flip shall determine which team gets the first possession. Every shot inside the arc will be awarded one point while every shot behind the arc will count for two points. Accordingly, every successful free throw will be awarded one point. The regular playing time during the first round will be 8 minutes and 10 during the second round, at which the game will be stopped in the last minute. The clock will be also stop during dead ball situations and free throws and only restarted after the exchange of the ball is completed. However, the first team to score 21 points or more wins the game even if it happens before the end of the time. The Red Bull Reign final champions will earn the chance to compete in the 3Ă—3 World Final held in Washington, USA in September 2017. Each qualifier will host 24 teams, players 16 and above can submit an application for their team of four players to compete during the qualifying competitions in Kuwait. The qualifiers will be held on two consecutive days at Marina Crescent Basketball courts on 15 and 16 February. The new branch was designed and implemented by “Sparks” international which meets the highest international standards. the best ice cream in the world using high quality, carefully selected ingredients. Reuben believed that if you were going to indulge in ice cream, it should be a real and fulfilling experience rather than the 'cold and sweet stuff' of his time. Reuben's ambition was to create the world's best-tasting ice cream and his devotion to the highest standards changed the way people thought about ice cream. The Häagen-Dazs philosophy remains the same to this day. We believe that everyone deserves to experience pleasure that is fulfilling and real and this guides everything we do. It’s worth noting that Häagen-Dazs ice cream selection is available at 950 stores in more than 80 countries around the world. KEEPING THE SPARK ALIVE “It’s not a lack of love but a lack of friendship that makes marriages unhappy” ~ Friedrich Nietzsche

T

hink back to when you first met; those early days when you wanted to spend every minute together; when your day was made happier by a simple phone call. Do you remember that excitement? Do you recall feeling butterflies dancing in the pit of your stomach? These early stages of your relationship are unforgettable. Then came marriage and the added responsibilities; saving for the future, building a home, raising a family; and all of a sudden there is no more romance in the equation. Somehow, the romance flew out of the window. Despite the stress and worry, it is possible to keep the spark alive and to keep the romance between the walls of your home. The most important pillar in your marriage is friendship. When you and your spouse are friends, it becomes pleasurable to spend time together, easier to understand each other and more natural to empathize with one another. Romance becomes a byproduct of your friendship. To keep your marriage alive and happy, you don’t need extravagant gifts and expensive trips for two. What you need is a daily connection with each other and daily acts to nurture your relationship. Every couple can take small daily steps to either empower their relationship and strengthen their marriage, or daily steps that will weaken their bond and union.

024

FEBRUARY 2017

Here are some tips on how to keep the spark alive: 1. Connect with each other. Make it a daily practice to stay in touch with each other. All it takes is 15 minutes of alone time where you can both check in with each other and be on the same page in terms of where you both are in your life today. If you don’t have time to actually sit and talk at home daily, make the phone your next best friend and connect through that! Whatever you choose, make sure that you actually save these precious 15 minutes for the two of you. 2. Express your appreciation and validation. All humans have a need to be validated and appreciated, so don’t forget to express to your spouse how much you appreciate her hard work, or the effort she puts in to keeping the family together, or her impeccable scheduling skills so each member of the family has time for their own interests. This goes both ways of course; a wife should validate her husband too. Showing appreciation and putting these feelings into words brings you closer to each other. It is one thing to appreciate your spouse in your head, but it is a different thing to actually tell them! Using your words will make a world of difference; after all, your spouse is not a mind reader so articulate your thoughts and translate them into words. 3. A little kindness goes a long way. Make an effort to do little things for each other to show kindness. Sometimes it is especially hard if you are upset at your spouse, but kindness breeds more kindness and before you know it, your acts are contagious and your spouse is reciprocating. Try small things, like sending flowers on an ordinary day, sending an ‘I love you’ text for no reason, or apologizing for something you said.

4. Put yourself in your spouse’s shoes. Make an effort to understand your spouse and see things from their point of view. It is not always easy to fully understand your spouse but making an effort to listen patiently will make a world of difference. Stephen Covey said it beautifully: ‘Seek first to understand, then to be understood’. 5. Make your partnership a priority. As we move from our newlywed state to being parents, our relationship shifts and sometimes our love and romance is placed on the back burner. Make your partnership a priority and strive to balance between your role as a parent and your role as a partner and lover. One way to think about it is that your children will eventually grow and stop needing you as much, eventually leading their own lives, but your spouse and you will still be together. If you put effort in to your marriage now, then you will still have a loving relationship in a few years; otherwise you will have an empty nest with your kids gone and a stranger for a spouse. The more effort you put into your relationship now, the more you will benefit in both the short and long run. 6. Intimacy is key. Passion and intimacy strengthen your emotional connection and take your relationship to the next level. Do not neglect that part of your marriage as it can be the one thing that makes or breaks a marriage. Physical connection and intimacy is an important part of emotional intimacy; if your physical connection is weak, or worse, non-existent, then so is your emotional intimacy. Marriages, like flowers, will bloom with more love and attention.

SIGNATURE

by Sanjeev Kapoor

A sleek, modern and trendy Indian restaurant

O

n my last trip to Dubai I wanted to invite a few good friends to dinner but could not decide where to take them because when it comes to food, Dubai is almost too exotic to imagine. There are restaurants serving virtually every national cuisine from around the world. However, I really wanted to introduce Indian food to some of my friends but again, choosing a good Indian restaurant was a challenge. I had heard excellent reviews about Signature by Sanjeev Kapoor, which had opened in 2012. Sanjeev Kapoor needs no introduction; he has been a household name for at least two decades. My father was a great fan of his and almost every kid from the 1990s knows him for his path breaking show, Khana Khazana. He has received many awards, including the Mercury Gold Award in Geneva, Switzerland. This year, he was also awarded a Padma Shri – one of India's highest

civilian awards - for his culinary contributions. In recent times, he has launched his own food channel, Food Food; been a judge on Master Chef India; and still continues to charm and cook his way through to our hearts. Having heard a lot about this opulent restaurant I decided to take my friends there. It is located at Melia Hotel, 23 Kuwait Street. We were greeted by the friendly staff, all trained and ready to provide a top notch dining experience, and were seated at a table of our preference. The restaurant was classically clean and elegant creating a chilled-out mood. The interior was cozy and the lighting was perfect for a pleasant dining experience. We perused the menu and were impressed to see a vast range of cuisine. We all decided on a menu item

menu. Unfortunately for us, it was already booked on that day. For our main course, we ordered their Signature Dum Naryali Prawns which we highly recommend everyone to try. It’s a velvety curry of soft prawn and lobster cooked and served in delicate coconut. It was definitely a different experience. We also ordered Lucknowi Chicken Biryani which was perfectly cooked and flavored with saffron; mildly spiced as per our preference. The restaurant innovates with every dish, offering authentic Indian specialties with a twist. When the time came, we were very excited to see our desserts. We all loved Rasmalai but were eager to see and taste the Sanjeev Kapoor version. When the plate arrived, it was a masterpiece - it was a shame to spoil the art to taste it but we couldn’t resist! The Shivalik Rasmalai Snow prepared with a Himalayan dessert of fresh cheese and frozen condensed milk, with platinum pebbles, completed a truly great experience. All in all, Signature by Sanjeev Kapoor is a super fine dining restaurant that serves Chef Sanjeev Kapoor's authentic Indian and signature dishes. It is highly recommended for a unique experience in modern gastronomy. At present there are three branches of Signature; one each in Dubai and Abu Dhabi and another one in Doha, Qatar. and opted to share the food to get a chance to try different dishes from the menu. We found the staff to be very well trained and they helped to make the best of our dining experience as we asked for help through the menu, ingredients and selection of accompaniments. As we gave our selection the waiter enquired about our gastronomic and spice preferences. An assortment of Chutneys with Papad was served - Tamarind and Mango were our favourite – and a signature welcome drink. It was difficult to guess what it was - a thicker, warmer version of Lassi with cumin seeds - but we all enjoyed it. Our starter platter could easily be described as ‘art on a plate’; we were mesmerized by the variety. The Lamb Chop was stone-flamed, malleted with traditional haleem and mint sphere; the Tandoori Prawns were perfumed with smoked Andhra chillies; even the tomato jalapeno dip was delicious. The platter also had Double Fish Kebabs which were another favourite - a duo of basil pepper Dover Sole fillets and mustardy John Dory fish steaks. As we finished our starters, we were informed that the restaurant also offers a live cooking station where we could enjoy dinner and a show with an opportunity to view the chefs cooking from a fixed www.cpmagazine.net

Tell us more about Dana?

What does Munch N Move offer?

I’m a mother of 4 year old twin boys and a little girl who take up most of my time. I think the best word that describes me is busy. I divide my time between my family, day job, gym and Munch N Move. Phew! Just saying that overwhelms me.

Munch N Move is dedicated to turning knowledge and research into measurable change. Our nutrition program helps you make small changes over time that add up to big results. The services we provide include: 1. Workshops for kids, mommies, mommy and me classes 2. Interactive nutrition program for kids 3. School visits

What is Munch N Move? Munch N Move is an initiative dedicated to promoting family nutrition and health. We pursue this goal through interactive educational activities and workshops for both parents and children. 028

FEBRUARY 2017

Where did the idea come from? I was inspired by the other after school initiatives in Kuwait such as Engineering for Kids and Little Doctors. Also, my friends and family ask for nutritional advice all the time - most of the time for their children - and I thought this would be a great idea for all the other super-mamas and children who need nutrition advice and coaching.

Who teaches the Munch N Move classes and workshops? Me! I have a Bachelor’s degree in Dietetics & Nutrition from Florida International University and a Master’s degree in Nutritional Sciences from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. I was an adjunct professor at AUK teaching a health and fitness class to freshmen and I was the ambassador of a food safety campaign in Kuwait called Safe Food, Safe Family.

How easy is it for kids to adopt new habits? The earlier you start a habit, the more likely it is to stick. Once kids start developing the taste for those unhealthy foods, it’s hard to break those bad habits. More importantly, kids will mimic their parents, so make sure you are setting a good example for your children when it comes to eating healthy and exercising.

What challenges do you face? With my crazy schedule, my biggest challenge is time.

In general, how would you describe the eating habits in Kuwait? Unfortunately, our eating habits have changed in a significant way from their usual, natural pattern. Eating fast food, dining in restaurants and ordering in has become the norm in most households. A home cooked meal is gradually becoming a rare commodity. Kuwait has become the #1 obese country in the world.

With all these unhealthy options in the market, how can you manage to convince kids to change from bad to good and to maintain? Education. Nutrition education is the answer. When you teach a child how to read food labels and read food ingredients, you have empowered them to make healthy food decisions for the rest of their lives.

Do you stay in touch with the parents? How much does this help? Of course. Munch N Move classes are not only for children. I have mothers attend my workshops with their kids to learn about food labels and hidden sugar. After every class or workshop, I send a summary to parents about the key learning objectives. The role of the parent after class is to review and implement what was discussed in class. The feedback I receive from parents has been great and they have seen notable changes in their family’s eating habits.

Any advice for the parents? You have the most important job in the world - to be your child’s role model. Please take that job seriously. Eat healthy, be active, use car seats, be positive and spend more time with your kids than on your phone.

What is your goal? I have two goals: 1) To revolutionize the way kids and parents eat and think about food 2)To empower children to lead a healthy lifestyle and make good food choices.

Away from business, what are your hobbies? I love collecting stationary - monochrome, Scandi, simple - and grocery shopping, especially in farmer’s markets and organic food stores. I’m a kid at heart so I enjoy spending time with my kids and playing with them.

HERE'S WHY YOU'RE NOT FIT… Jamie & Alana Karehana

Y

ou want to be fit. You know how much you should weigh. You know your ideal pant size. You can even picture how great those skinny jeans will look. So why aren’t you living life in your ideal body? There are many complex reasons that make weight loss a challenge, reasons that go deeper than simply calories-in versus calories-out. We're talking about the life issues that get in the way of your success. Read the following 5 obstacles and the solutions to unlock your best body ever.

In your mind, it’s painful (or at least uncomfortable) to deny yourself the tasty food that you crave and to exert yourself with exercise. There’s a simple way to work around this obstacle. Find something painful about being out of shape to motivate yourself towards healthy eating and exercise. Focus on the negative impact your current weight has on your health, self-esteem and lifestyle. Convince yourself that the pain of being out of shape is much greater than the discomfort of losing weight.

2. You don’t want to wait for the good stuff.

Just as you wish to avoid pain, you are also an expert in seeking out pleasure - namely food. This served the cavemen well, but It’s in your DNA to avoid pain and seek out pleasure. these days it ends up as extra pounds around your waist and Unfortunately this works against you when trying to get fit. thighs.

1. You don’t want to be bothered.

030

FEBRUARY 2017

But there’s good news! Extra calories are not your only option to stimulate the pleasure center of your brain. Find an activity or two that make you smile and indulge in those regularly. •A walk outside •A night out to the movies or theater •A spa day You can also retrain your brain to crave the pleasure of exerciseinduced endorphins. Talk about weight gain kryptonite!

3. You are crazy busy. Let’s face it; you work too much, commit yourself to too much and don’t even get enough sleep most of the time. The fastpaced way you live leaves you exhausted, stressed and hungry for comfort food. You even begin to feel too busy to take care of your health. It’s time to reprioritize. Let go of your perfectionist standards and remove a few commitments from your schedule so that you are able to cook healthy meals, exercise and get a good night’s sleep. Remind yourself that taking care of your health is not a luxury - it’s a necessity.

4. You don’t deserve it. We don’t agree with it, but you sure act like you don’t deserve to live the good life in the body of your dreams. Take a moment to think back on all the times you have self-sabotaged your weight loss efforts. If you don’t believe deep down that you are worthy then you’ll never give yourself a chance at a fit body.

We believe that you deserve to have a healthy body - and we urge you to dig deep down to uncover why you don’t. Once you conquer your feelings of unworthiness, getting on an exercise and healthy eating plan will be easy. Take the time to take care of yourself - you DO deserve it.

5. You are afraid. You’re afraid to start because you just might fail; and wouldn’t that be embarrassing? You’re also afraid to start because you just might succeed and change makes you uncomfortable – even if it’s change in the right direction. When you decide to get fit you will need to go through a bushel of changes: •New diet •New exercise routine •New friends at the gym •New clothes •New self-image Focus on all of the ways that losing weight will make your life better. Envision that better life everyday so that it goes from being new and scary to familiar and comfortable. We want to personally help you overcome every obstacle standing between you and your ideal body. Call or email today to get started on a program that will change your life.

THE WAISTLINE BETWEEN HEALTH & MARRIAGE

O

nce upon a time, a gorgeous princess fell in love with a handsome prince. Then one year after their marriage, the beautiful couple grew six centimeters on the waistline. Yup statistics have proven that women grow an average of two centimeters and men and average of four on their waistline after marriage. It seems there’s no happily ever after in health and fairytales. Or is there? The good news is that losing the extra kilograms is easier done with a spouse or partner. There’s a satisfaction in knowing there is someone else going through the same struggle. A recent research study published in the UK found that men and women are more likely to stop smoking, exercise more and lose more weight when their partners join them during their journey. Couples making healthy changes together are likely to achieve better results than when doing it alone. Here are some steps to help you get started.

032

FEBRUARY 2017

1.Create a grocery list together Make sure you both have healthy food available within your household. The easiest way to do this is by scheduling a set time each week to agree on your groceries and organize your meals. Your grocery list should include items that both you and your spouse enjoy that are of course, junk-free. Focus on lean proteins and whole grains, fruits and vegetables that you both like and limit foods like chips, cookies and sodas. If junk food is out of reach, you’re less likely to splurge on it when you both get hungry.

2. Redefine your date night Eating out as a dinner date can get mundane, and guess what…full of calories and large portions. So why not stay in and get creative with your cooking? Cooking at home allows you to take control of the ingredients you use in your meals, limiting excess fat and salt. It also serves as a fun way to bond in the kitchen. But who says you’re limited to cooking at home? Incorporate different activities for date night that could get you to move a little. My personal favourite is bowling as it is fun and healthy.

3. Turn off the TV while eating It’s a simple formula really: TV + Food = Overeating. You’re bound to gain weight over time if you keep eating in front of the TV.

Try enjoying dinner time at the table together without any distractions; and make sure to plate your portions. Eat what is on your own plate so you know how much and what you have eaten. Also, be selfish. Never allow yourself or your spouse to have more than your required portions.

4. Get active together Spending time together is always treasured in a couple’s agenda, but it is often spent in an un-healthy way feasting on a big dinner, or snacking on all sorts of junk. Instead, take a walk, join a fitness class, or go dancing! Not only will it burn more calories, it will also help you grow closer. However, there can be several drawbacks with couples dieting. The most important one is the biological differences between men and women. Couples might be tempted to set the same goals, which unfortunately can be a set-back especially for women. The reality is men usually lose weight an average of 25% quicker than women - and that’s how Mother Nature intended it to be. Stay away from comparing results and set separate targets. The same goes for self-control and staying on track. Don’t act like the food police for each other; minimize any unwanted tension and resentment. There is a huge difference between motivational and critical; remember, the journey is the same but the steps taken will differ from one person to another. www.cpmagazine.net

ROSES ARE RED…..

N

o sooner have we waved goodbye to Christmas and its associated nonsense, than we’re faced with the commercial exploitation of St. Valentine’s Day. Celebrated annually on February 14th, Valentine’s Day was originally intended as a feast of cultural significance in recognition of the early Saint Valentinus. It was first associated with love and romance in the 14th century - thanks mainly to the works of Geoffrey Chaucer - and soon became a popular date with other well-known poets including ‘The Bard’ himself, William Shakespeare. In fact it was referred to, somewhat regretfully, by Ophelia in Hamlet: To-morrow is Saint Valentine's day, All in the morning betime, And I a maid at your window, To be your Valentine. Then up he rose, and donn'd his clothes, And dupp'd the chamber-door; Let in the maid, that out a maid Never departed more. Modern day Valentine poems tend to begin with the same two lines - Roses are red, violets are blue - and are then extended with whatever rhyming prose the author deems appropriate for the recipient. In reality, it’s a bit of a cliché and one the marketing experts have been quick to exploit. Long gone is the idea that Valentine gestures should be restricted to love-struck anonymous romantics hoping to attract the attention of their heart’s desire. These days, Valentine’s Day is far from anonymous with greeting cards available for husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, fiancée and so on. Hardly a secret is it? And it’s not just the greeting card companies who are cashing in on this romantic tradition. The cost of flowers and chocolates escalates ridiculously in the run up to 14th February; and shelves are suddenly filled with everything red. The window of one commercially aware florist in Kuwait was filled from floor to

034

FEBRUARY 2017

ceiling with giant red teddy bears this time last year. Unfortunately, those same teddy bears are still there now (an indication of either a gross miscalculation by the owner or, how few romantic souls there are in Kuwait – I suspect the former). Valentine tradition also dictates that we venture out for a romantic meal on 14th February. Personally, I think there’s nothing worse than sitting at a table for two, surrounded by dozens of other tables for two, all choosing from the same Valentine themed menu in the company of a drooping red rose. The cost of this so-called romantic night out is hardly cheap but it’s hardly memorable either. Time and money would surely be better spent doing something spontaneous and unique rather than predictable and dull. Better still, why wait for St. Valentine’s Day at all? Surely we don’t need an ancient saint to tell us when to be romantic. And as for the red theme, not only are we expected to buy red flowers, red chocolates and red teddy bears, we’re also expected to wear red clothes! Just as florists decorate their windows with various shades of love, so too do fashion and footwear stores. Perhaps I don’t want a red pair of shoes; maybe red doesn’t actually suit me; what if I was looking for something blue? And unless you want to look like a cross between Catwoman and a vampire, don’t even glance at the lingerie! Far from being a loveless tyrant with no sense of romance, I shall indeed profess my love to my significant other on 14th February (the same as I do every other day). However, in doing so, I shall not line the pockets of florists, confectioners or other commercially greedy organisations. And with that promise, I shall end with a Valentine’s poem of my very own: Roses are red, Violets are blue, Spending a fortune on Valentine’s Day? More fool you!

AAVVA

AHMED & VINCENZO ‘The Architects of Fashion’

With backgrounds in interior design, civil engineering and architecture, a career in fashion may not have seemed the obvious choice for Vincenzo Visciglia and Ahmad Ammar. But their mutual love for art, combined with their Brazilian and Lebanese roots, led them to create their very own fashion brand, inspired by the dynamic city of Dubai. 036

FEBRUARY 2017

Please introduce yourselves to our readers: Vincenzo: I am Vincenzo Visciglia. I am from Brazil. I am an architect and interior designer working for our brand AAVVA. Ahmad: I am Ahmad Ammar from Beirut. I am a civil engineer and fashion designer. I am currently working with Vincenzo on AAVVA Fashion.

Tell us about your education and work experiences:

V: I did Interior Design from the International Fine Arts in Miami followed by Architecture from the FIU. I have always been keen on my love for creating, exploring and developing what inspired me from a young age. I previously worked as Creative Director for Pappa Roti and also Creative Director at BrandNoise Branding, plus Architect Partner at BrandNoise Architecture. A: I am a civil engineer but I also studied fashion. I work on engineering projects but run AAVVA simultaneously. I enjoy the design that I share between both things that I do; and I believe that counts. Love what you do. www.cpmagazine.net

037

When did your interests in fashion begin to A: We wanted to express our vision and background as engineers while portraying our love for fashion, art and style. We develop? V: Well, art is in everything we believe. Especially since we do engineering and art together now, we can assure that art is the basis of both. We never really thought about where this would go or about any opportunities; we just knew and had a deep passion and belief in our instincts. A: I also studied fashion designing earlier and upon meeting each other in Dubai, it seemed like it was all for a reason. Dubai, the city in all its dynamics, was also a driving source of inspiration for both of us. Even though we had studied engineering, we both felt certain that fashion would truly bring up something special here in Dubai. We followed our instincts and inspiration and kept thinking and doing more towards it and here we are!

want to be able to bring out the best using the mix incorporated with our background as engineers.

What were your inspirations for the brand name? What does AAVVA mean? V: Well I am Vincenzo Visciglia and he is Ahmad Ammar. AAVVA is our passion and it’s come so far. We are proud of it and we want to build more. A: That’s all we knew when we thought about starting something; and after starting AAVVA in 2011, we are so glad to be here now.

Why did you start with women’s clothing? How, when and where did the two of you meet? Are you planning to expand and include men’s clothing or accessories?

V: We met in 2011 while working on the same project in Dubai. That project was in our field of engineering. Soon we realised that we both had a vision when it came to fashion and we decided to start our own fashion line, AAVVA. A: I also had my degree from Esmod Fashion School in Beirut. Vincenzo, being involved in the fashion and modeling field since long before, just helped give us that push to get started! Dubai was also a great inspiration to both of us.

How did the idea of starting your own brand come up? V: We were both attracted to fashion; it was either the creativity or just the sheer love for art. When we met, we felt very strongly that we could do something in the field of fashion, particularly in a multicultural city like Dubai. In 2011, AAVVA was launched. 038

FEBRUARY 2017

V: I believe this is the dream of any designer. The world of fashion has a long and varied history. Trends change on a seasonal basis and often reflect the overall sentiment of culture at one time. Saying all of that, we believe that women are really lovers of art. They admire it and adorn themselves with it. A: We’ve always respected women and apart from the fact that fashion for women is truly creative, it enables us to think and re-think keeping in mind all the women who might wear our designs. We also believe that women need to be understood more when it comes to clothes and designs. V: Apart from our home décor which we are currently working towards, the AAVVA Fashion store will house all of the AAVVA Couture Collection from ready to wear to casual; it will combine all aspects of home décor and exquisite Brazilian Artistry.

Do you divide your tasks? V: We design equally but Ahmad takes care of the high end and couture part and I take care of the ready to wear. But it’s not like we have a process for dividing tasks. It is totally spontaneous and as per the need of each idea or design. I think our experience and our cultural diversity kicks in! Because of my roots and what I hear about amazing Brazilian fabrics, I tend to pick up any ideas on the fabric that may be required and set about finding the perfect one while Ahmad works towards the cuts and styles, focusing on the theme and needs of our audience. But it could also be vice versa; ultimately it all depends on the design and idea. A: We like to integrate and work together. We are grateful for the amazing team that we have. It almost comes naturally now, the way we use our ideas and designs to work together. We believe our individual experiences help us in that and we are smoothly able to understand our roles and proceed to create something truly beautiful.

How did starting this brand change your life? V: Well it definitely became more demanding. We tend to plan more and try and stay at the top of our routine. When we have a couple of things to finish, teamwork along with effective planning, works for us. Life is definitely busy but we are happy to stay active! A: Yes, it gets quite busy. But besides continually working on engineering projects, we are working

on a lot of things for AAVVA. I believe we are very motivated and positive. We advise everyone to keep moving and to keep going. We didn’t visualize a lot before starting. We knew we loved this and we kept growing.

Describe your design style? V: We are very upfront about our designs; we take influence from architecture and silhouette and also do ethnic designs. We believe in the right dress for the right person and we design with that in mind, aiming to make our dresses for all women A: Fashion recognizes the power that it has and we also understand the kind of confidence it can create. We design for women and we try to put our understanding and full attention towards it.

from Brazil and also from Paris.

What kind of role does art play in your life? V: Everything for me is art. As we mentioned before, art is in everything we believe. Especially since we do engineering and art together now, we can ensure that art is the basis of both. A: To me art is the beautiful expression of how you perceive anything. It’s about your understanding and then presenting it. Careful thought is needed and sometimes when you are consumed in creating your masterpiece, you don’t even realize that it’s now your work. It’s therapy in a way, if you believe in it.

Did you take part in any Fashion Where do you get the inspiration for Weeks? Have you had any solo fashion your designs? shows so far? A: We believe inspiration is all around. It’s about your perception of everything around you - nature, art, buildings – it can all be inspiring. V: We both agree that we get our influences from so many talented designers, both traditional and international. We want to be up-to-date and fashionable at the same time making sure our customers are really enjoying and loving our ideas. Inspiration also comes from our thought process and knowledge of the people we are creating for.

Where do you source your fabrics? V: Well we do it locally and we source some fabrics

A: We haven’t yet but we are going to be doing something very soon!

Describe your design philosophy? V: My philosophy for designs is to just do what’s in your heart. Design with your heart and it will always bring out something wonderful. A: Great design is more than calculations and statistics. It is something that is loved and accepted by the people you create it for. I believe design is something that differs from person to person and our cultural blend just works for us. www.cpmagazine.net

Who tend to be your clients? A: All the ladies of the Arab world. We like to carter for all women. V: We hope to target the international market soon too.

What has been your biggest struggle so far? V: To put our brand in the market was obviously the biggest one. There have been quite a few but despite these struggles we always have to keep moving. A: We create, we are inspired and we perceive; but we are never sure what our audience will or will not accept. We always think that a particular design will be loved and will complement our audience.

Do you have any role models in fashion? If so, which one? V: The woman of today. Women are our role models when it comes to fashion. We create for women and we believe they are our biggest critic and inspiration. A: Fashion is so much more than just a look or an outfit. We take inspiration from our customers who visit us regularly and motivate us. It’s about diversity and creating something new and different; people usually love it.

How are you finding business in the current economic climate? V: Business is doing well. We believe the economic state does 040

FEBRUARY 2017

not affect us much. We design for all women. We are not priced in a way that keeps our audience away. A: Again, we would like to credit the wonderful city of Dubai. People are smart here and they know what they want.

Where is your collection currently available? V: We have our store in Dubai Design District. A: We are also available at Galeries Lafayette in Dubai Mall.

What is your ultimate goal for the brand? V: To have it across countries and definitely have the whole brand available everywhere else. We want to make sure all our customers have access to the items easily. A: UAE was always our source of power to start and grow all that we had. Obviously, we are constantly aware of the progress that is being made all around and we are lucky to grow and progress together with Dubai. We believe in more to come our way soon! Stay tuned for more from AAVVA!!

Your message for us at CP magazine and our readers: V: Stay fit guys! To all people, no matter what, focus on your health - mental and physical. It is so important to eat right and to keep fit. Try it before you give up! A: We believe in fitness and good energy. Keep your aspirations and hopes up and stay focused!

LIFE WITH CAKE

Chestnut Season! Sherifa Alasousi

S

ince it is Chestnut season in Kuwait, I decided to try and make a cake using chestnuts. Chestnuts, unlike other nuts and seeds, are relatively low in calories and fats. Nonetheless, they are a rich source of minerals, vitamins, and phytonutrients, all of which immensely benefit health. The nuts are an excellent source of minerals such as iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus and zinc, and also provide a very good amount of potassium. Chestnuts, like hazelnuts and almonds, are gluten free. Moreover, for the same reason, they are one of the popular ingredients in the preparation of gluten-free food formulas intended for use in gluten-sensitive, wheat allergy and celiac disease patients. My recipe today is just too good to be true knowing that you are having something sweet yet beneficial for dessert! You will need: l l l l l l l l l l l

100g light brown sugar 225g butter 3 large eggs 300g cake flour 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp fennel seeds 6 tbsp chopped cooked chestnuts (roasted) 4 tbsp pine nuts 1 tsp flaky sea salt 6 tbsp honey optional for decorating (mixed dried fruits & nuts - rosemary)

Steps: 1- Preheat the oven to 160C/325F/Gas 3. Butter and line a

20cm/8in or 23cm/9in springform cake tin.

2- Put the butter in a saucepan with the honey and sugar and

melt them together slowly, stirring occasionally. Once dissolved, bring the mixture to a boil and simmer for one minute, turning the heat down as necessary to ensure the pan doesn't boil over. Set aside to cool for 20 minutes.

3- Beat the eggs together in a jug then stir them into the cooled honey mixture. Sift the flour and baking powder into a large mixing bowl and make a well in the centre. 4- Pour the honey mixture into the flour and stir, gradually incorporating the flour. As soon as it is well combined, stir in the fennel seeds and four tablespoons of the chopped chestnuts. 5- Pour the cake batter into the prepared tin. Combine the

remaining chestnuts with the pine nuts and flaky sea salt in a small bowl and sprinkle them over the top of the cake.

6- Bake for 45-60 minutes, or until the cake has risen and a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.

7- Leave the cake to cool in the tin for five minutes then turn it out onto a wire rack.

8- Warm two tablespoons of honey in a small pan until runny, then brush it generously over the top of the cake.

9- Decorate your cake with dried fruits, nuts and rosemary.

This cake is perfect for our cold February weather. It is comforting, rich and nutritious. Remember: Bake for love and bake with love! Let me know how your recipe turns out: www.sherisnovember.wordpress.com Bon appetite!

A TASTE OF SCOTLAND

Gill Sherry

H

ands up if you’ve ever tried haggis. I suspect, aside from the odd Scottish ex-pat, not many of you. In fact, do you even know what it is? Haggis was actually adopted as Scotland’s national dish, thanks to the poet Robert Burns who penned ‘Address to a Haggis’ in 1787; a verse annually recited at Burns Suppers across the nation to mark the anniversary of the poet’s birth. At these suppers, the haggis is carried in on a large silver platter, accompanied by a piper, before the theatrical cutting with a ceremonial knife. Quite a big deal! So what exactly is it? Its main ingredients are sheep’s heart, liver, lungs and stomach combined 042

FEBRUARY 2017

with oatmeal, onion, suet and spices. It doesn’t sound particularly appetising does it? Neither, if I’m honest, does it look very appealing. However, one taste of this Scottish delight could have you well and truly hooked. I was tempted to call it a delicacy, but the whole point of haggis is that it’s nourishing but cheap; hence its popularity in Robbie Burns’ era. My last visit to the UK coincided with Burns Night on 25th January and working on the ‘When in Rome’ theory, I decided to indulge in this favoured Scottish tradition. The dish is served with ‘neeps and tatties’ (that’s suede and potatoes to you and me) which are boiled and mashed. It goes without saying that the Scots usually enjoy their Haggis with a ‘wee

dram’ (a glass of Scotch whiskey), or even with a whiskey and marmalade sauce, but this is by no means compulsory and it can therefore be enjoyed without the need for alcohol. Some of you may remember The Goodies (on second thoughts, probably not!), a British comedy trio who shot to stardom with their own TV show in the 1970s. They depicted haggis as a small, furry animal with legs longer on one side than the other, allowing it to negotiate the mountainous Scottish landscape. Unfortunately, some people took this to be true and actually believed that the haggis was a living, breathing animal native to the Scottish Highlands (my childhood self included). Some even went out of their way to look for it! You can buy haggis in various forms; most major supermarkets stock tinned haggis and it’s readily available in the chiller cabinet at all major Scottish airports. You can also find it on restaurant menus in sausage form or in ‘bon-bon’ bite-sized pieces. However, there’s nothing to stop you making your own with both the traditional and easier recipe options available online. Surprisingly, there are other things you can do with haggis besides eat it (or hunt it!). The dish is also used for ‘haggis hurling’. The world record for haggis

hurling stands at 217 feet (66 meters), a throw recorded by Lorne Coltart on 11th June 2011. This is just one of many unusual events included in the Highland Games each year. Others include caber toss, tug-o-war, Scottish hammer throw, sheaf toss and stone put. Intrigued? So you should be! The Highland Games are held every spring/ summer in Scotland to celebrate Scottish and Celtic culture. The largest are held in Dunoon and attract over 20,000 spectators from all over the world. As well as the games themselves, the event includes traditional music and dance as well as dog trials, Highland cattle shows and mock battles. There’s also plenty of opportunity to enjoy the unmistakable sound of bagpipes. Needless to say, you can also indulge your taste buds. But haggis isn’t the only dish associated with Scotland. Aberdeen Angus is world famous for its high quality beef; Scottish salmon is (arguably) amongst the best in the world; venison is one of the country’s great national products; and the recipe ideas for roast grouse are endless. Hopefully this small taste of Scotland has been enough to pique your interest. There’s certainly more to the country than kilts and castles! Watch this space for more Scottish treats!

Adie

Gill Sherry

Following a successful career in both government and retail environments, Adie left the UK in 2013 to realize his dream of working and living abroad. He is now working for one of the world leaders in fashion, supporting its day to day security requirements across both its Scottish stores and ecommerce operation. After a lengthy career in insurance, Gill left the UK to enjoy the experience of a new country and to focus on a very different role in Kuwait. Now Group Editor for our very own CP Magazine, Gill’s long suppressed talent for writing has finally been revealed.

Please tell us about your academic backgrounds:

A: I left school at 16. My most prized possession will always be my Latin qualification. I never use it but love to talk about it! In those days the desire to work immediately after leaving school was far higher than it is today; going to university was only for the exceptionally talented. Nowadays you are expected to extend your academic career so it is only the few who don’t go to university. My father taught me to work hard, meet people, learn every day and to make a difference. No one university degree exists for such values. G: I went straight into full time work after leaving school at the age of 17 then studied for a number of years for my insurance exams, achieving my ACII qualification in 1999. I was awarded Chartered status in 2009 and served as President of my local Insurance Institute in 2012/13. I worked in insurance for over 30 years before taking an entirely different career path in 2014.

How and where did the two of you meet?

A: Coventry, England. 14th November 1983, 8.30pm. One look did it for me. I still love that look! G: Many, many years ago! I was only 15 and Adie’s been a huge part of my life ever since.

As a professional, what are the qualities you admire in your spouse?

A: Our academic backgrounds are very similar; both of us could probably have done better at school. At 17, Gill embarked on a

046

FEBRUARY 2017

brilliant career in the UK insurance industry which took her from an administrator through to the President of the Insurance Institute of Coventry. To get there took nearly 10 years of study to qualify, total dedication and a fierce desire to get to where she wanted to get to. G: Adie has this amazing ability to make people feel special. Regardless of their age, background or status, he will go out of his way to make them feel valued, to believe in themselves and to make them smile. It’s a rare trait and one that makes me extremely proud.

Where do you concur and where do you differ from each other?

A: We both love football - Gill too much! We support different teams but Gill’s (Tottenham Hotspur) is far superior to my home town club (Coventry City). We love a debate when Tottenham are playing on TV! Gill would always say I’m too generous to individuals who are maybe not deserving. I blame my father for that one! G: I want things done ‘now’ but Adie is more laid back so will do things in his own good time. We’re both perfectionists so however long it takes, it needs to be done exactly right. Adie has far more patience than I do; impatience is probably one of my biggest flaws. But I’m also determined so if I set my mind on something, I won’t stop until it’s done. He’s less compulsive and a little more spontaneous. Our taste in music is different – his CD collection can only be described as archaic!

Do you think being friends with your spouse is an important part of marriage? A: My parents separated when I was 11; unheard of in the 1970s. It caused a lot of pain for me and my sister and taught me a lot of things about what’s important in a marriage. I have very few what I would call close friends. Gill is my best. We know how to separate friendship and marriage. G: Of course. How can you expect to get along if you’re not friends?

How do you handle a work-life balance and challenges in a dynamic work environment?

A: When we left the UK, we both left high profile careers. My old job took me away from home too much and our quality time was zero. Moving to Kuwait was fantastic. It was hard work but the whole ethos of family life in Kuwait really rubbed off on us. I particularly love Fridays in Kuwait – family, friends and loved ones. You have to work at it. When I see young, junior members of the team responding to work emails at 11pm at night it drives me crazy. Technology makes it too easy to have to be on call 24 hours a day. G: We both work hard but don’t let it overtake our lives. At the end of the day we work to live, not the other way around.

When do you spend time with each other? How do you unwind?

A: We are currently renovating a beautiful old house in Scotland. It’s taking all of our spare time; it’s hard work but very rewarding. We love to travel, eat in lovely restaurants and learn as much about other countries and nationalities as we can. G: We try not to work at weekends, although sometimes it’s unavoidable. Sundays can be difficult when I’m in the UK. It’s a normal working day in Kuwait so I need to be available to work as and when required, even though for me it’s still the weekend. We live in a beautiful part of the world so try to get as much enjoyment from it as we can whenever possible.

A: No technology in the world can ever replace being with someone; being next to them, holding hands, laughing and smiling. For the first year in Kuwait I was on my own. I thought I knew how much love I had for Gill but being without her made me realize I still had more to give. G: Our move to Kuwait changed our relationship quite significantly. Prior to that we had both worked for our respective employers for a long, long time and with hindsight, we didn’t see that much of each other. It was a huge decision to leave for both of us and one that changed not just our professional lives but our personal habits and outlooks too. It made us realise that anything is possible and that once you’ve made one life changing decision, any future decisions are easy.

How do you manage your time together? Do you have any time left over for your marriage at all?

A: Always. The key is to plan ahead. The calendar is there to be filled with experiences. It has a date and a month for a reason. Fill it up! G: It’s easy to get caught up in the demands of our jobs but relaxation is important. We’ve recently purchased a property in Scotland and although it’s hard work, we’re enjoying the challenges its redesign is throwing at us. We’re also making the most of our surroundings. Scotland is beautiful so we’re trying to travel and see as much of the country as we can.

What are the challenges of being two powerful people at the top of your professional game?

A: Material, my Gucci watch. Gill gave it to me for my 30th birthday. I still wear it now. It always creates a conversation when it’s spotted. G: There have been many special gifts over the years. The best ones are the intangible ones; they leave you with memories not just possessions.

A: Powerful isn’t a word I’m comfortable with. I’m lucky that in my current role I have a lot of ability to make my own decisions; I have an extremely supportive manager. Working within the Security and Investigation industry is an ever changing environment. Keeping abreast of technology and the continual security threat to retail are my key focus. G: I have far more work to do before I’m at the top of my game (or powerful)! At the moment, as with most things, the biggest challenge is time. I’m currently writing a book but finding time between my editing/columnist role, renovating the house and travelling between countries is quite a challenge. I also need to find time for my family; spending time with my parents is just as important (actually more so) as my other commitments.

Any memorable holidays?

What have been your most challenging moments in life?

What is the best gift you received from each other?

A: We have been so fortunate to travel the world. My father was born in New York and he instilled the travel bug in me at a young age. My most vivid memories come as a result of tragedy. I recall our first visit to the Twin Towers observation point in New York in the late eighties - stunning. Recently, we visited the Tsunami Honganji Vihara statue in Sri Lanka. It was built in memory of those who were sadly killed in Hikkaduwa when the tsunami devastated the country in 2004. The statue is the size of the wave that hit the shore. Over 35,000 people died in total. By a wave? I cried. I have to mention Muscat. I ruptured my Achilles last year and went to Oman on crutches, with my leg in plaster. Whilst walking to our table for dinner at the beautiful Chedi hotel, the porter tried too hard to guide me through the water fountains. My crutch disappeared into one fountain and my good leg disappeared into the other - I nearly returned with both legs in plaster! G: Plenty. Adie proposed to me in Paris so that will always be memorable. I ate snails the same evening and was then ill for six weeks with a serious case of food poisoning! We went to Australia with my sister and her husband back in 2000. We were there for the Melbourne Cup. To this day, it remains one of the greatest events I’ve ever been to. More recently, we visited India. The Taj Mahal was unforgettable but sadly, due to the state of the country, I’m likely to remember India for all the wrong reasons.

One would imagine that both of you probably discuss business issues a lot at home too. Does that happen? A: My work life has always involved fraud and investigation - always an interesting discussion. In Kuwait I loved working with Starbucks, it was so different. Learning about coffee was fantastic and I have deep respect for Baristas. Discussing with Gill where a coffee bean originated from was fun! G: Yes quite often, but I think that’s a good thing. It’s important to understand what makes each other tick when it comes to work and to understand what’s involved in each other’s jobs.

How are household responsibilities divided? Who is the boss at home?

A: I met Gill 33 years ago and her godfather jokingly warned me ‘she’ll end up like her mother!’ She did - and I love them both dearly. Me and my father in law have an understanding….. G: We both do our bit but the garden is definitely his domain. To be honest, as long as he takes the rubbish out, I’m happy! As for who’s boss……I couldn’t possibly say!

048

Has there been any significant event that has changed your marriage? What was the event? How did it change your relationship?

FEBRUARY 2017

A: My father died of Motor Neurone Disease in October 2004. He was, and still is, my inspiration in life. He was told he was to die in hospital but he wanted to be at home. We got him home, made him comfortable and we spent the last 9 days of his life together. We laughed, cried, planned his funeral and planned my own future. He went to the next world in peace. G: Climbing Kilimanjaro was pretty challenging! In fact, we’ve both done a fair bit to raise money for charity, primarily the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Every pound raised was a challenge in itself. Professionally, achieving my ACII was my biggest challenge. Studying doesn’t come easily so it took a long time to achieve. The main thing is, I got there in the end.

How do you motivate each other during tough times at work?

A: We love to talk. We find our favourite spot, eat nice food, sort out the issues and move on. G: With straight talking honesty. Sometimes it’s easier to see things from the outside so a different, independent point of view is often all that’s needed.

Who’s your inspiration professionally?

A: Richard Branson’s zest for life and his attitude to the people who work for him always impress me. During my time with M H Alshaya I was exposed to the world of Howard Schultz (CEO Starbucks). The guy went from nothing, made it big, went back to pretty much nothing again and then made it bigger. At the heart of it all he stood true to his values. It was never about him, it was always about the people who work for him and those they inspire daily - the customers. If you fail to look after your own people you will have no customers. A true leader. G: My writing tutor, Fiona Joyce. I wish she lived closer so I could tap into her knowledge more often. I have lots to thank her for and will be forever grateful for her support and encouragement in getting my writing career kick started.

What have you learnt from each other?

A: Live your dream. G: Adie knows me better than I know myself so I’ve learned lots about my attitude and outlook. If I’m frustrated about something, he’ll know the cause of that frustration before I do. Sometimes he’s far too savvy for his own good! He’s also taught me to be more forgiving.

Some marriages are ‘passionate’ some are ‘companionate’ - which fits you?

A: Ha! Not too sure how to answer that one! Gill retains the ability, after 33 years, to make me smile when she enters a room. It’s the same look she gave me all those years ago. The passion remains. G: You can’t have a successful relationship without both.

What are the keys to a successful relationship?

A: Laughter. Communication. Never accepting the norm. G: Mutual respect; and laughter. If you can’t make each other laugh, you may as well give up now.

Do you have any common interests or hobbies?

A: Football. Travel. Beautiful restaurants. Drama on TV. G: I’m football mad! Adie enjoys it too but his team is less successful than mine so he doesn’t get as much pleasure from watching it as I do. We are both in a fantasy football league and have plenty of fun laughing at each other’s team performance! Trips to the cinema, beach walks and travel are all at the top of the list. Exploring a new city or country is always a winner.

QUICK QUESTIONS Favourite Colour: A: Sky blue. G: Anything but yellow! Favourite Food: A: Fish. G: Can’t beat a medium-rare steak! Tea or Coffee: A: Tea – unless a Barista is in attendance then always a fresh coffee. G: I drink both, depending on my mood and the time of day.

Advice for other couples:

Favourite Car: A: My old Mitsubishi Pajero in Kuwait (Paj). I miss him daily! G: Audi R8, all day long!

How do you feel being selected as one of CP magazine’s Power Couples?

Favourite Book/Author: A: I rarely read. G: A Heart Bent Out Of Shape, Emylia Hall.

A: Life is a rollercoaster; you’ve just got to ride it. G: Seize every opportunity. And don’t take life too seriously; you have to make time to have fun.

A: I can hear my father now, ‘Son, never forget where you came from!’ I just hope, in a very challenging and uncertain world, that our story can inspire in a small way. We were just two teenagers when we met, with a lifetime of dreams ahead of us. Through good times and bad we have lived, and will continue to live those dreams. G: Absolutely stunned! We would never consider ourselves a ‘Power Couple’ but were truly honoured to be asked (and also a little embarrassed!). We’re both from working class families with humble backgrounds so were brought up to believe that you don’t get anything without working for it. We still believe that today.

Favourite Song: A: The Real Thing – You to me are everything. G: Take That – Greatest Day Greatest Fear: A: Being asked to clean the outside of my windows on my tenth floor Kuwait apartment! G: Suffering memory loss and forgetting all the great times I’ve had! Favourite app on your phone: A: Instagram. G: Thesaurus. What's the one thing you can't live without? A: Love. And Gill’s poached eggs on a Saturday morning! G: My laptop. I can’t work without it so where I go, it goes.

Favourite Movie: A: Top Gun. G: Top Gun.

Al Minhali

Having worked for his family business and later in business banking, Raed decided to take his passion for food to the next level. Please tell us about your academic backgrounds:

Shahzad: Bachelor’s Degree in International Business & Marketing from the University of Indianapolis. MBA in International Business from Washington International University. Anju: Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce from University of Delhi. I owe all my knowledge and thirst for life to life itself. The people I have interacted with have been my only source of growth personally.

How and where did the two of you meet?

We’ve known each other since High School. It’s a long story. In short, even though we were poles apart as teenagers, destiny had us meet spontaneously and pretty often from August to December 1994 in Kuwait. Since then, we have been inseparable.

As a professional, what are the qualities you admire in your spouse?

Anju: It is difficult to separate one’s personal opinions and favouritisms from your partner. I have worked for 25 years and have yet to come across a ‘Leader’ like Shahzad is. He does not command or manage; he leads and inspires. He has no tolerance for dishonesty and will not back down to support and promote his employees. His work is his passion and he will never shy away from recognizing and admiring that of another. Shahzad: I am a man of few words. I can describe Anju in 5 words: Integrity. Professionalism. Determination. Honesty. Focus.

Where do you concur and where do you differ from each other?

We are without doubt on the same page when it comes to family, our future, integrity and ample healthy space for each other’s personal development and growth. We would differ in the most complementary of ways. While Shahzad is concise, Anju is poetic; while Shahzad is old-school and mature, Anju is a dreamer and an explorer. While Shahzad keeps his reading concise to expand his worldly knowledge with news, Anju is a fiction-addict and a veracious reader.

Do you think being friends with your spouse is an important part of marriage? A one word and easy answer. ABSOLUTELY 101%.

How do you handle a work-life balance and challenges in a dynamic work environment?

We see our lives as a collective environment, where work and personal life complement each other. Our decisions regarding growth at work and growth at home are based on honest discussions and real life situations.

When do you spend time with each other? How do you unwind?

We are deeply connected throughout the day. We might not be able to physically spend time together on a daily basis, but let that not deceive anyone about our connectivity. As for the free time we do get, we make it a point to go for long walks to Shaheed Park as often as we can as that’s our favourite spot. We love exploring restaurants and new cuisines, we enjoy early breakfasts on the weekends, we both love to shop, movies, the list is endless. Basically, we never tire from each other. Traveling and travel planning is something that is always on our mind.

What is the best gift you received from each other? Our son. Our star. Prabeer Kakkar Gidwani.

Any memorable holidays?

Too many; and the list continues to grow.

One would imagine that both of you probably discuss business issues a lot at home too. Does that happen?

Not really. We have a lot more to discuss and that’s usually much more fun too. Business and work discussions stay at work.

056

FEBRUARY 2017

How are household responsibilities divided? Who is the boss at home?

No boss at home or outside home. Our responsibilities are shared, so are the rewards.

Has there been any significant event that has changed your marriage? What was the event? How did it change your relationship?

Our marriage has evolved and continues to evolve, not changed. We both have grown immensely as individuals and luckily we have been able to translate that individualism into our companionship excellently and beautifully. We do not finish each other’s sentences as we both have our thoughts and opinions. We compliment each other. We support each other. There will always be events both minor and major. What holds our marriage together is our knowing without a shadow of a doubt that we can turn to each other and speak our minds.

What are the challenges of being two powerful people at the top of your professional game?

Shahzad: It’s not a challenge as a professional. It’s a passion and I do what my job/profession requires me to efficiently do to reach my goals and those of my peers and those dependent on me; ensuring that the passion stays alive. Anju: Technically I am not working anymore. I decided to say goodbye to 25 years of work. A beautiful world of experience and an array of personalities I met along the way lies behind and in many ways beside me. My life has taken a new turn. Everyone seems to be searching for the

meaning of life while I just want to live my life. Pure and simple. It seems poetic or dreamy to most but that is what I do now. While I’m doing that, I am also working on my first novel. I have procrastinated much about it. 2017 is the year of completion. I have never been one to be on top of any game, be it professional or personal. I want to be the happiest and spread happiness in every situation of life and that is my passion.

What have been your most challenging moments in life?

Every day is a challenge one way or the other. Every day is magic. Every moment is a celebration and we are celebrating life.

How do you motivate each other during tough times at work?

We stand by each other. A friendly reminder that no matter what, here I am. That is all one needs in love; and in any relationship for that matter.

Who’s your inspiration professionally?

Shahzad: My inspiration would be Ali Morad Behbehani; for his humble nature, his vast worldly and business knowledge and finally his larger than life aura. Anju: I might sound a bit arrogant, but professionally I would not have an inspiration. Personally, all those whom I love have been an inspiration to me. My husband, my son, my oldest best friend (yes I do have a bff) and my few soul friends I have accumulated over the past few recent years. As a matter of fact, even those who I would not have in my life by choice have inspired me to be the complete opposite you could say. I am extremely fortunate to have invited and to be invited into the lives of some amazing minds and hearts and that is where all my inspiration comes from.

What have you learnt from each other?

Anju: 1. To continue to believe in myself 2. Some things and people cannot be changed - learn to accept that fact. Shahzad: 1. Managing my temper. 2. Patience and tolerance.

Some marriages are ‘passionate’ some are ‘companionate’ - which fits you?

Passionately compassionate, but of course, pun intended.,.

What are the keys to a successful relationship?

Respect for each other’s individuality and point of view. Friendship. Complete and total transparency.

Do you have any common interests or hobbies? Traveling. Movies. Music. Shopping.

Tell us about your children. How have they changed your life?

We have one 18 year old son. Prabeer. It would take a whole page to tell you how he has changed our lives but in short, we both would agree that parenting has been one of the most rewarding and beautiful experiences of our lives. We are proud of the young man that he is.

Advice for other couples:

Each to their own. Find your balance. Know what works for you. Give each other space to grow and be.

How do you feel being selected as one of CP magazine’s Power Couples?

Well, we don’t really see ourselves as a Power Couple. We go about our lives being adamantly honest about our views and we do not apologize for our way of thinking or for our opinions or for our success. As Anju would say, Shahzad is the pragmatic punctuation to her poetic madness. We live in our simple world with our simple friends and our over the top ideas of freedom of self and spirit. It is indeed surprising for us both to be considered as a power couple. It’s kinda cool and exciting though! Surely something we are going to brag about over social media!

Hassan Almosawi

Yalda Golsharifi

Hassan’s varied roles have included stints with NBK, Kuwait Oil Company and Ritcher Creative; winning an award at the latter for ‘best event’ in 2014. He is now Social Media Consultant and Influencer @Halmosawi as well as Advisor to the Board for Kuwait Times and Head of Communications at Zain Telecommunications. Yalda has a degree in Film Directing as well as having enjoyed the enviable role of Fashion Editor. She is now one of the leading Social Media Influencers in Kuwait and internationally; and a proud mama to Lilly and Sasha.

Please tell us about your academic backgrounds: Yalda: BA in Film from Los Angeles Hassan: MBA in Management

How and where did the two of you meet?

Hassan: We actually met on Facebook! I saw her and after briefly talking to her I flew 16 hours to meet. The day we met we got engaged and 50 days after was our wedding day. I remember breaking the news to our mothers. They were in shock but when they saw us together they knew it was meant to be.

As a professional, what are the qualities you admire in your spouse?

Hassan: I admire her kindness and modesty. Before fame she had always attracted attention but from the moment we met until now, nothing has gone to her head. She is still as real as the day I met her. Yalda: I love his wisdom. He seems to always look at the big picture and see things from a different, more positive angle. When the world seems in chaos, he knows how to make sense of it.

062

FEBRUARY 2017

Where do you concur and where do you differ from each other?

Yalda: We both have the same priority to be happy and to grow together. Hassan: Areas where we differ are music, film genres, holiday destinations, food, hobbies - we’re pretty much opposites in every sense of the word.

Do you think being friends with your spouse is an important part of marriage?

Hassan: 100% How can you not be friends when history, partnership and affection is the basis of all friendships?

How do you handle a work-life balance and challenges in a dynamic work environment?

Yalda: We are constantly adjusting and trying to figure that one out. We have a sense of when parts of our lives are out of sync and we tend to wave the red flag and adjust quickly.

www.cpmagazine.net

063

When do you spend time with each other? How do you unwind?

Yalda: We rarely have shows we both enjoy, but when we do we love to sit back and relax to a good show. I try to get him to work out with me - 7 years and no luck so far! Hassan: I love talking to Yalda she is a great listener and that’s what makes her a great friend and partner. Oh and she laughs at my jokes which is special!

What is the best gift you received from each other?

Hassan: Once on my birthday I woke up to a sticky note, which lead to around 50 notes the whole day, from my home to the office and back home again. The effort she made took my breath away! I’d rather she doesn’t answer this question so I don’t look bad! Yalda: Hassan is not a big gift guy, but daily he does the little things to surprise me, make me laugh and cheer me up and that’s priceless.

One would imagine that both of you probably discuss business issues a lot at home too. Does that happen?

Hassan: All the time, not because it’s necessary but because we both have a passion for it. Yalda: Hassan and I have different insights so our discussions are so intense when it comes to business. I love that we challenge each other.

How are household responsibilities divided? Who is the boss at home?

Yalda: I’ll let Hassan answer that! Hassan: Yalda is boss of the household. The only thing I wanted in a house was a painting of mine and even that was recently taken down! I do have Veto power though. I have to give it to her, she knows how to make our house a home.

Has there been any significant event that has changed your marriage? What was the event? How did it change your relationship?

Hassan: I love this question as it reminds me of a pivotal point in our marriage. We had a rocky 3 months where we both felt we loved each other but were not receiving the same love in return. It didn’t make sense to me at all; so I asked Yalda to write down her vision of what love looks like and I wrote down mine. We realized that all things she saw as love were actions, where all mine were verbal. That’s when we got it; each person recognizes love in their own way. So no matter how much we love one another, we need to communicate it in a way that the other can experience it. It changed everything.

Hassan: Passionately companionate?? If that makes sense.

What are the keys to a successful relationship?

Yalda: Communication - most of all, listening. Hassan: Constant small fixes daily. Always trying to be better than the day before. That’s the essence of all success.

Do you have any common interests or hobbies?

Hassan: No! Yalda: Never - unless I wake up wanting to be a beatboxing juggling magician. Hassans hobbies are on the extreme side.

Tell us about your children. How have they changed your life?

Hassan: They are our biggest teachers, it is through them that we have found ourselves. Yalda: Being a mother has been my biggest achievement. That sense of pride makes every day special.

Advice for other couples:

Hassan: No matter how bad it gets, never compare your behind the scenes with those of other people in front of the camera. Yalda once tried to throw a chair at me - just saying! Yalda: Talk about everything and really understand each other. Most of the fights couples have are unconscious and a pure case of miscommunication. Remind yourselves that the priority is for both of you to be happy, not for one of you to be right. Although for the record, I’m mostly right!

How do you feel being selected as one of CP magazine’s Power Couples? Hassan: Honored! Yalda: Blessed.

Yalda: Absolutely, it’s about priorities and being happy. Nothing makes us happier than feeling close. Yes it’s hard but it’s a must!

Yalda: Thank you for the compliment but I think we still have a long way to go. As long as no parts of our lives are neglected, hopefully we have much more to come.

What have been your most challenging moments in life?

Hassan: We have been through so much, and what’s beautiful is that we went through things together. That is the glue in any relationship. Looking back it was a blessing that brought us closer than ever. It needs an interview on its own but I do love discussing this subject, for people to recognize that the hard times are probably the largest contributors to lasting love and ultimate success.

How do you motivate each other during tough times at work?

Yalda: Simply reminding ourselves of why we do what we do. Our vision and purpose always pulls us through any time.

Who’s your inspiration professionally?

Yalda: Beyonce. Because her priorities seem in line and she is always able to step out of her comfort zone and reinvent herself. Hassan: The world is filled with many experts in different fields; I won’t be able to pick just one.

What have you learnt from each other?

Hassan: So much! Yalda has made me civil and the size of her heart inspires me so much on a daily basis. Her perspective on things always disturbs my thinking and opens doors of possibility. Yalda: I learn from Hassan everyday, he loves to learn and he loves to share. He literally has withdrawals if he doesn’t learn something new every day!

aving already been impressed by three of Kuwait London Company’s eateries (Junkyard, Proper Sliders and Humble Burgers) we were looking forward, with much anticipation, to visiting The Kitchen Kuwait. There are three Kitchen restaurants to choose from – Shaab Al-Bahri, Ardhiya and Mahboula. We visited their Mahboula branch where we were greeted with warmth and efficiency by the charming staff. The interior was surprisingly spacious with ample space to enjoy our dining experience. When the weather permits, there is also an enclosed terrace for a spot of al-fresco dining. We began our meal with a selection of appetizers: Mozzarella Sticks, Crispy Chicken Tenders and Shrimp Tempura. The carefully chosen accompanying sauces complemented each dish perfectly and had us licking our fingers in delight. That said, the Broccoli Soup that followed was easily our favourite! Rich and 066

flavoursome it ticked all the right boxes. Other appetizers on the menu include Gnocchi (homemade Italian potato dumplings), Mushroom Arancini (risotto rice with mushrooms and mixed cheese), Tomato Melanzane (eggplant baked with mozzarella, parmesan and basil leaves, served with their signature tomato sauce), and Vegetable Quesadilla. More than enough choice to whet your appetite! The Kitchen menu also includes a wide variety of wraps – Lebneh, Halloum & Olive, Grilled Chicken and their signature Falafel Wrap (homemade falafel with taboulah mixed with a tahini sauce), to name just a few. Before our main course, we sampled the Pasta Salad. Crisp, fresh and with an assortment of textures it would be equally enjoyable as a dish on its own, or as a main course accompaniment. The honey mustard dressing was delicious – so delicious we

were tempted to ask for more! There are three other salads to choose from (Roasted Red and Golden Beetroot, Caesar and Greek) along with six different sauces and dips. In addition to their impressive Kitchen Burger and Signature Chicken Burger, you can opt for a selection of three Mini Burgers. We indulged ourselves with one each of the Beef, Chicken and Falafel – all finger licking and mouthwateringly scrumptious. There’s an impressive selection of Grills and Pasta to choose from at The Kitchen so you’re guaranteed to please the entire family. We ordered Shrimp Fajita, Penne Arrabiata and Pasta with Chicken and Creamy Mushroom Sauce. The Penne Arrabiata (penne pasta, capsicum and black olives served with their signature arrabiata sauce, topped with parmesan cheese) was a firm favourite. Other main course choices include The Kitchen Lasagna, The Kitchen Chicken Skewers, Shrimp

Pomodoro, Chicken Milanese and Spaghetti Bolognese. We’re already looking forward to our next visit! Unable to resist the temptation of their signature Chubby Balls, we finished off with the decadent dessert before heading home, happy and satisfied. At The Kitchen, they specialize in creating fabulous food. They source only the finest quality ingredients to blend simple but delicious recipes, all freshly prepared within minutes of receiving your order. How and when did you meet? We met nearly 8 years ago at the Modern English School in Cairo, where we both completed our high school education. I had been living in London with my family for 4 years and when we moved back to Egypt I went to MES. That’s when I met Farah and we have been together ever since.

Tell us about your education: Farah has just finished her studies at the American University in Cairo and is graduating with the highest GPA in Business Management with a double minor in Economics and Digital Media. She also did a semester at St. Andrews University in Scotland. I studied Architecture at the University of Westminster in

London and I am currently doing my masters in Architecture there as well.

Tell us about your work? Farah worked and trained in various companies before and throughout her time at university. Along with her studies, she had been part-timing for about a year at Nestlé, working in brand management. Upon graduating I worked for an architecture firm in central London. However, I had to leave to complete my full-time master’s degree. I now work part-time with my father, who is a civil engineer and interior designer and also runs a couple of other side businesses.

What got you interested in photography? Since a very young age I’d been very interested in photography. My dad would walk around with a camera almost everywhere we went and I guess his passion and love for it automatically transferred to me. I believe photography is a great way to preserve memories and tell stories that cannot always be told easily with words. www.cpmagazine.net

Do you have any formal training? Have you taken any courses?

How many locations have you covered so far under ‘Follow Me To Egypt’?

Not, but as with almost everything these days, online platforms have provided an excellent alternative. Not to mention a lot of practice and experimentation as well.

We have covered roughly 40 locations. Some of them have included photos that our followers have shared with us and we’ve reposted. We try to engage our followers as much as we can because everyone has different perspectives and we are interested to see how they experience different places in Egypt. It also gives us ideas of places we’d like to visit!

Tell us about ‘Follow Me To Egypt’. How and when did it all began? It started almost 3 years ago. I was studying in London at the time and Farah was studying in Egypt. I would come back to Egypt whenever I could, and when I did, I would want to visit all the touristic places there. My mindset became more of a tourist than that of someone who’d lived there for most of his life; Farah and I would go around exploring places we hadn’t seen before, taking photos wherever we went. We then realized we could put our photos to good use by sharing them with people and showing them that Egypt is safe, beautiful and not as dangerous as the media portrays it to be. We had also been following Murad Osmann, who created the ‘follow me to’ concept. We were very intrigued by it so decided to adopt the concept and challenge the powerfully present paternalistic mindset instilled in traditional Egyptian culture. Follow me to Egypt became a voluntary project that we developed to help boost international and domestic tourism in Egypt, especially in light of recent political and social events resulting from the Egyptian Revolution that have impaired Egypt’s image as a tourist destination. The decision was then made by both of us to start an Instagram page as a leisure pursuit, but it unexpectedly attracted LOTS of attention, motivating Egyptians and tourists to share their #followmetoegypt moments with us.

Was your fiancée ready to support the idea or did you have to convince her to participate in the project? It was a mutual idea as we mentioned, so there was really no need for convincing. To be completely honest, Farah has put so much more into this than I have. She’s been great!

FEBRUARY 2017

Do you post your photos on Instagram only or do you also have a blog? So far we’ve only posted our photos on Instagram, but we have plans to start a blog soon and even upload videos to YouTube as we start to travel more.

How many followers do you have on your Instagram account? We have almost 17K followers and we must say that they are a very special bunch indeed! We would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of them for their support and we look forward to welcoming any newcomers!

What have been your top 3 places to photograph so far and why? 1-The Mastaba of Princess Idut in Sakkara. Seeing the inscriptions on the walls of the sacrifice chamber was incredible; it was like reading a comic book except it was etched in stone on the walls and it was thousands of years old. A must see for anyone visiting Egypt! 2-Moez Street and Khan El Khalili, for the lovely people we met there who made our photos so special. We would also recommend going there both during the day and at night. The experience is completely different. 3-Soma Bay. In particular, snorkeling near Paradise Island. Its natural beauty is indescribable and we don’t think our photos could ever capture it accurately enough. It is a place you have to experience in person.

What is your target? How many locations would you like to feature in total? We haven’t really thought about that. There is no limit to the number of locations we want to visit or feature on ‘Follow Me To Egypt’. We would love to travel around the whole of Egypt and abroad and we look forward to continuing to share our experiences with everyone.

What will you do once everything in Egypt is covered? It is probably extremely difficult to cover the whole of Egypt, because there is so much to see and do; the country is always changing and new places are emerging. We also believe that the same place can also be experienced in many different ways.

What was the first camera you used to take the photos? The first photo we took was taken using the camera of a Samsung Galaxy s3 phone.

What are the biggest challenges you’ve faced to get the photos you want? The biggest challenge we currently face is funding/sponsorship. Up until now the account has been completely voluntary, funded from our own pockets. Because I am currently still living in London and Farah is living in Cairo, it obviously costs a lot to go back and forth frequently. So, we generally try to visit as many places as we can while I am there so we have enough content to use during periods when I am not able to come back. Managing the account and everything else that comes with it has also become very time consuming so if anyone is interested in collaborating or helping out, give us a shout.

What type of camera and lenses do you use now? We currently use a Nikon D5100 (with Sigma 18-35mm f/1,8 DC HSM Art and Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM Lenses), a GoPro Hero 4 Black and even a Polaroid.

In your opinion, what makes a good travel photograph? I think what makes a good travel photo is how accurately it captures the moment and context in which it is taken.

Did you get any support from the government or the tourism authority? Unfortunately, we have not had any support yet. We hope that as the account continues to grow, there will be some support from them and we look forward to hopefully working with them soon.

What are some of your future plans or projects? Let us surprise you!

When are you planning to get married? We are not sure exactly when yet, but hopefully soon.

What’s the message you would like to convey through your photos? The most important message we are trying to send is that Egypt is safe. We have not experienced any difficulties relating to anything portrayed in the media since starting the ‘Follow Me To Egypt’ journey. Riding a camel by the pyramids in Giza is safe, lying down on a beautiful white sandy beach in Soma Bay is safe, and flying in a hot air balloon in Aswan is also safe. Egypt is one of the most diversely beautiful countries in the world; it offers the best of history, culture, sea life, desert, food, adventure, you name it. So go out there and explore!

Your message for us at CP magazine: Keep spreading the love and we look forward to welcoming you and all your readers in Egypt one day!

SPLIT Directed by M Night Shyamalan Written by M Night Shyamalan WRITING MOVIE

WRONGS moviewrongs.com

M

Night Shyamalan is notorious for his ‘twist endings’ and has had major success with films like The Sixth Sense, Signs and Unbreakable. This story is an interesting concept. A man named Kevin with 23 personalities struggles with them as a 24th personality is coming to take control of them all. Three teenage girls are kidnapped by one of the personalities and most reviews you will read focus on the one teen girl trying to manipulate the 23 personalities to help with her escape. They are all wrong. Firstly, it is noted several times that there are 23 personalities. Yet the film only shows us 8 of the 23. Then of those 8 personalities, only that of Hedwig the child is ever subject to manipulation. I wonder if these reviewers even watched the same film as me, as I would welcome the premise that the girl would attempt to manipulate all personalities in one way or another to turn on each other. Alas that does not happen. Now let me break into spoiler territory! The film does a good job with making the audience feel creeped out and slightly cringing. Yet the film lacks visual jump scares that films such as this would normally bring. James McAvoy does a fantastic job at portraying the personalities and his performance really couldn’t have been better. Two of the three girls seem to underplay their captivity and at times overact, which can be a distraction. The one main girl, Casey (played by Anya Taylor-Joy), does a good job for her role, but where M Night fails us is not showing more of her flashbacks. As a child

she was molested by her uncle and when her dad died from a heart attack (which the uncle notes runs in the family) had to grow up with her molester. The climax of the film reveals she is a cutter. Now that is when a flashback scene showing her cutting herself for the first time might have improved the climax a bit more. Dr. Karen Fletcher (Betty Buckley) should not have died. Rather the script should have seen her survive and she would be the foremost expert on Kevin and his personalities for any possible sequel. Of course, with the 24th personality, called the Beast, noting towards the end that more personalities would be coming, she would still have a great challenge in helping anyone track him down. Now why do I strongly suggest she be left alive? Well the surprise twist ending takes place in the diner scene, revealing Bruce Willis’s character David Dunn (Unbreakable), tying the two films into the same universe. This to me is beckoning for a sequel in which Dunn tracks down the Beast. Therefore it makes more sense to leave the doctor alive. I would not have written the ending in the diner. I would have switched to Casey at home with her uncle. She confronts him while he is eating and he starts to have a heart attack, possibly induced by her. She reveals again her scars, no longer afraid to show them as she was earlier in the film. As he is dying she says that heart attacks run in the family and watches the life leave his body. That is how this film should have been written to take it from ‘nice idea’ to ‘great must see twice’ film. Thanks for reading Writing Movie ‘WRONGS’.

Here her life is supposed to end but instead she discovers it is only just beginning.

IN THE GREAT GREEN ROOM: THE BRILLIANT AND BOLD LIFE OF MARGARET WISE BROWN

I HATE EVERYONE, EXCEPT YOU

by Amy Gary

Clinton Kelly is probably best known for teaching women how to make their butts look smaller. But in I Hate Everyone, Except You, he reveals some heretofore-unknown secrets about himself, like that he’s a finicky connoisseur of 1980s pornography, a disillusioned critic of New Jersey’s premier water parks, and perhaps the world’s least enthused high-school commencement speaker.

For decades children and their parents around the world have cuddled together to read Goodnight Moon and Runaway Bunny. While the lulling words of these stories have formed nighttime rituals for millions, few know that these classic works were part of a publishing revolution led by Margaret Wise Brown, who was renowned not only for her prolific writing and creative genius, but also for her stunning beauty and thirst for adventure.

For fans of The Nanny Diaries and Sophie Kinsella comes a whipsmart and deliciously funny debut novel about Kate, a young woman unexpectedly thrust into the cutthroat world of New York City private school admissions as she attempts to understand city life, human nature, and falling in love. Despite her innate ambition and Summa Cum Laude smarts, Kate Pearson has turned into a major slacker. After being unceremoniously dumped by her handsome, French “almost fiancé,” she abandons her grad school plans and instead spends her days lolling on the couch, watching reruns of Sex and the City, and leaving her apartment only when a dog-walking gig demands it. Her friends don’t know what to do other than pass tissues and hope for a comeback, while her practical sister, Angela, pushes every remedy she can think of, from trapeze class to therapy to job interviews.

SCRATCH: WRITERS, MONEY, AND THE ART OF MAKING A LIVING by Manjula Martin

A collection of essays from today’s most acclaimed authors from Cheryl Strayed to Roxane Gay to Jennifer Weiner, Alexander Chee, Nick Hornby, and Jonathan Franzen on the realities of making a living in the writing world. In the literary world, the debate around writing and commerce often begs us to take sides: either writers should be paid for everything they do or writers should just pay their dues and count themselves lucky to be published. You should never quit your day job, but your ultimate goal should be to quit your day job. It’s an endless, confusing, and often controversial conversation that, despite our bare-it-all culture, still remains taboo.

IF NOT NOW, WHEN?: MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR LIFE, YOUR RELATIONSHIPS AND YOUR WORK

EVERYTHING YOU WANT ME TO BE

by Ronald P. Culberson

Full of twists and turns, Everything You Want Me to Be reconstructs a year in the life of a dangerously mesmerizing young woman, during which a small town’s darkest secrets come to the forefront...and she inches closer and closer to her death. High school senior Hattie Hoffman has spent her whole life playing many parts: the good student, the good daughter, the good citizen. When she’s found brutally stabbed to death on the opening night of her high school play, the tragedy rips through the fabric of her small town community.

In his previous book, Do it Well. Make it Fun, author Ron Culberson introduced us to the idea that excellence coupled with fun and humor can help us achieve both success and contentment in all areas of life and work. Culberson draws on his experience as a hospice social worker and his expertise in the benefits of humor and laughter to further this work in his new book, a collection of blog posts, articles, and essays. Ron tackles every aspect of life, from how to make your job more enjoyable to some of our most difficult challenges, like parenting, aging, and death. TheStylistes

since 2010

What does change mean to you? A new beginning, a career move, a new phase in life? There is always a meaning behind the word change; sometimes a broken heart or even the burning desire to feel better. As individuals, we aim to improve ourselves in the search for the feel good factor to ultimately achieve happiness. Don’t we all want to be happy? Let’s begin by introducing ourselves. We are Carla and Marie, a team of image consultants also known as ’thestylistes’. At first, it may sound like a career that stays in the surface of looks, brands and beauty, but the reality of it is very different. We make people look their best which, by default, makes them feel their best and that is why image consulting is such a gratifying career. We help people. We are thrilled to introduce the first makeover of 2017 and since it’s St. Valentines, the month of love, we must reveal that something special is cooking in the makeover machine. Let us introduce you to our client Heydi Naranjo.

Heydi, please introduce yourself to our readers: Hello, my name is Heydi. I am 35 years old, originally from Equador but lived most of my life in Spain. Now I am based in Dubai and work as a production and casting co-ordinator for TV commercials. Although in Spain I worked in the finacial sector.

Tell us your story, what made you feel you needed a makeover? When the financial crisis hit us all, I lost my job. At the time I felt lost and didn’t know where to go or what to do. I just needed a change, so I moved to Dubai for a new beginning. After a few months, I decided to follow my heart by starting a new career in productions, since that has always been my passion. Now that I am established in the business and in Dubai, I am finding I no longer know what to wear. I am used to business clothes which no longer fit my new career in the media industry. So I need your help, please!

Now, let the makeover begin!

COLOUR ANALYSIS The first step of the analysis process is the colour analysis, where we will determine whether Heydi is cool or warm, depending on her skin undertone, hair and eye colour. If she is cool then the cool colour palette will be more flattering for her, but if she is warm then warm colours will suit her best. When draping cool vs. warm fabrics near Heydi’s face, we can clearly see that cool colours like blue, purple, white, cool red and black lightens up her face and her eyes shine; her skin starts to glow and it brings out a very flattering tone in her complexion. On the other hand, warm coloured textiles have the opposite effect on Heydi and imperfections start to be highlighted. Her skin tone becomes paler, we start to see darkness under her eyes; even some pimples that were not so obvious before, now become apparent. Without a shadow of a doubt, we conclude that Heydi is of cool undertone.

GOLD vs. SILVER ANALYSIS The step #2 of the makeover is the gold vs. silver analysis, which will provide valuable information regarding which jewellery suits our client best. By placing silver and golden fabrics near Heydi’s face, we instantly see that silver brings a freshness and radiance that the golden fabric cannot. Therefore we advise her to always wear earnings, bracelets and other accessories in silver shades or white gold, while staying away from yellow gold. Even for clothing, silver dresses will be the optimal choice, as opposed to golden ones.

BODY SHAPE ANALYSIS Now that we understand colour well, let's move onto the body shape analysis. This step is crucial in determining Heydi’s body type, which will guide us towards the types of garments, textiles and cuts that suit her best. Firstly, we measure Heydi’s waist, hips and shoulders. We instantly realise that Heydi’s shoulders and waist are much smaller than her hips and that is called a Triangle body shape. Here are some tips for balancing a Triangle body shape: lIntroduce lighter colours, patterns or ruffles to the upper part of the body, in order to add volume and be more balanced with your hips. lOpt for A-line skirts, straight/bellbottom trousers and darker shades, which have a slimming effect. By applying these easy tricks to Heydi, we have created a balanced body shape and the illusion of the desired hourglass figure.

HAIR AND MAKEUP Hair and Makeup is the closest to our face, therefore we must make sure these two elements are done correctly so we look our best. Let’s start with makeup. Knowing that Heydi has a cool skin undertone is a key factor in determining her optimal makeup colour palette, which in her case will be in pink shades for foundation, lips and blush. Moving on to hair and looking at Heydi's before photos, we can see her golden highlights are not a flattering choice for her, due to the simple fact that she is cool and her current hair is warm. So a change was needed and we found the perfect shade for Heydi. We went to her natural roots with a beautiful cool brown shade. Doesn’t she look gorgeous? It’s just right for her!

MAKEOVER RESULTS: What do you think about Heydi’s transformation? Let’s analyse each aspect of her change. Her hair was the most dramatic change; the cool brown shade applied by the professionals at Maison de Joelle has given her youth, freshness and elegance. Keeping the makeup simple and on shades of pink was key to bringing the natural beauty in Heydi’s complexion. For her clothing, we chose cool colours following the results of our analysis, being blue of medium intensity the most flattering colour near her face. We kept the rest of the look in shades of black and navy blue, as these are also some of Heydi’s top colours. In terms of style and cuts of the garments, a ruffled off-the-shoulder top is the winner, adding volume to her slimmer upper body. To complete the look, an A-line skirt of a darker tone was selected to slim down her hip area, and a thin belt highlights her slim waist. The result is a beautifully balanced body and a fantastic hourglass figure. In terms of her the style, we went for the brand Sandro to achieve a fun, vibrant and chic look, which will go with Heydi’s new creative career in the media industry. She will no longer feel like she doesn't fit in. Go Heydi!

HEYDI’S FEEDBACK: "I must admit that I was a little afraid when I started the makeover. Even though I trusted Carla and Marie, I didn't know what to expect. Now, I must say I am speechless with the change, even shocked in a very positive way. The hair was a radical change, especially after so many years being blonde, it will take some time adjusting to it but I love it! Also, understanding my most flattering colours and shapes was a great learning experience. I now feel it will be much easier shopping for clothes. Thank you so much Carla and Marie. You are both so sweet and knowledgeable, one of a kind! I will never forget this experience".

How To Wear Shorts

A SHORTS GUIDE A brief guide to wearing shorts - what to look for, how to choose the right pair to match your build, and how to style them. Even though there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to putting on a pair of shorts, it's useful to keep a few things in mind. And once you master the art of wearing shorts, you can break the rules in style.

HOW ARE MEN’S SHORTS SUPPOSED TO FIT? A well-cut and properly fitting pair of shorts is not just more comfortable, it will make you look better. A tailored pair of shorts will define shape and create a flattering profile regardless of your size or build. They should feel comfortable and fit your body shape, without being too tight or restricting movement. And don't be afraid to show off a little leg! Be confident. It might take a little getting used to the first time you put on a tailored pair of shorts, but your legs will thank you for it. There are shorts available to suit every body type; you just need to find the right pair for you. For most body types, it is advisable to avoid baggier styles in favour of a more fitted pair; loose styles generally tend to make legs appear smaller, whilst at the same time making your upper body seem bulky. Not quite the look you're after. 090

FEBRUARY 2017

Unlike pants, which generally tend to follow your legs all the way down and are defined by their shape, shorts can quickly become shapeless and unflattering if they're ill-fitting in any way. The longer and baggier you go, the more fabric will be flapping around, and you'll risk losing shape and definition. In contrast, a properly tailored pair of shorts that's suited to your body will balance out your shape, by giving definition to your legs and working with your waistline, adding bulk where there is none and trimming down where there is plenty. To make sure you're on the right track, here are a few things to consider when you come to pick your next pair: 1. Opt for a sleek flat front: baggy shorts don’t complement any body type and won’t hide anything; 2. Avoid elastic waist bands as they tend to emphasise the keg

belly and love handles; 3. Choose shorts that don't flare at the bottom: narrow leg openings help to define shape; 4. Keep the length well above the knee for an on-trend tailored look. Ultimately, men’s shorts are supposed to fit in a way that makes you look great, feel comfortable, and move with ease. You don't need a great body to look great; you just need your clothes to fit.

WHAT LENGTH SHOULD MEN’S SHORTS BE? Wearing shorts is about confidence and finding the right length for your shape. Knowing where your shorts should fall is something you learn with experience. You may have always opted for a shorter short but this might not suit your body shape, or you've been tempted to hide your legs with longer shorts that might not have had the desired effect. As a basic guideline, here are the most suitable shorts styles based on your height. VERY TALL men should opt for mid-length shorts; longer styles will only draw more attention to your height, whilst shorter shorts on thinner legs can have the beanstalk effect. It’s all about confidence and how you feel about those legs though - if your quads deserve the spotlight, go ahead and show them off.

MEDIUM

Men of a more average to medium height are fortunate in that they can look good in any length; just don't go below the knee.

SHORT

If you’re a shorter man, be bold: you have free reign to go even shorter in length, as the long and baggy styles will swamp your style.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT COLOUR Everyone has their favourite colours and patterns, and having the guts to go with what you love is great. But there is also real benefit in understanding colour theory and opting for styles which generally suit your style and complexion. Certain colours look better with pale skin whilst others are ideal for darker tones, and patterns are a different ball game altogether.

COLOURS

With a paler skin, you'll look best in darker colours which contrast with your skin tone – bottle greens, deep slate greys and brown, as well as navy and vibrant blues work well. Black and white combinations are a no-go, as well as too many pastels or bold brights, as they will simply wash out your skin tone. As the skin tone darkens, you can work more pastels and brights into the mix, and the same goes for neutrals such as sand, camel and khaki hues. For olive skin tones, go bold. While most colours will work well with a medium skin tone, you'll get the best results in shades that are either a little brighter or darker than the middle ground; choose a deep orange or a royal blue instead of their faded variants. Avoid colours and shades that blend in with your skin tone. Guys with darker skin tones, take your pick. You can go for whatever colour takes your fancy, as long as they contrast with your skin; be brave and try your luck with bolder options, including prints and patterns. Darker colours like black and navy still work, but try to limit them in your outfit and incorporate a complementary colour to make it work.

to approach pairing patterns with the intent of not matching. If you're unsure about pattern matching but you still want to make a statement, in most cases you’re better off pairing your patterned shorts with a bold plain coloured shirt rather than risk clashing prints. A pattern will always draw attention to the body part you’re wearing it on. For example, if you want to show off your legs but don’t feel comfortable with your upper half, wear patterned shorts with a neutral top for a look that isn’t too loud. Any attention will go to the shorts, ultimately complementing the section of the body you don’t feel comfortable with.

PATTERNS

There are no rules to pattern matching; it takes experimentation and practice. For most, patterned shorts are best paired with neutral or plain tops to avoid getting too busy. Combining patterns with patterns is an art in itself, and you almost have www.cpmagazine.net

FIVE MISTAKES MADE WITH SHORTS 1. SOCKS

CHOOSING SHORTS TO SUIT YOUR SHAPE Your body shape plays a key role in getting the perfect pair of shorts, and there are shorts to suit all shapes. Here we’ve broken down the four main body types in some detail, followed by recommendations for how to pick the ideal shorts for each shape.

Can you wear socks with shorts? Admittedly, the shorts-socks combination can go horribly wrong. However there are exceptions where it works exceptionally well, like retro ankle length sports socks for a street style vibe, or heavy socks in outdoor boots for a rugged look. Most shoes that look good with shorts can be worn sock-less though, and if foot odour or sweat is an issue, ankle socks are your best friend.

2. BELOW THE KNEE There's no need for shorts to fall below the knee. Even if you’re in a cargo-style casual short, you'll want it to sit at the right length. Longer shorts pretty much defeat the purpose of wearing shorts altogether; they're less comfortable, won't keep you cool and you're at risk of looking like a schoolboy in hand-me-down Bermudas.

3. SKIN TIGHT There’s a fine line between well-tailored shorts and showing off a little more than you should. Unless you're engaged in an extreme sport or running for your life, skin tight styles are never a good look and they are almost guaranteed to make you feel uncomfortable, and likely self-conscious too. Choose tailored over tight.

4. MUFFIN TOP Slim fit shorts are one thing, but if you have to squeeze yourself into them, chances are you're going to squeeze something out, and usually it's the waist. Even with your top on, those love handles will be there for all to see and you can avoid it simply by picking shorts that fit. Elasticated waists are the main culprit for forcing that unfortunate muffin-top look, but it can also happen if you’re trying to fit into shorts that are simply too small.

5. TOO SHORT Even though men's shorts are getting shorter, with most shorts now comfortably above the knee, there is such a thing as too short; the words ‘hot pants’ shouldn't be used to describe you. Getting the length of your shorts right is about personal judgement but if your whole thighs are on show, even if they’re perfectly toned, you’re probably going a little too short. Anywhere between two and four inches above the knee is the perfect length for a tailored pair of shorts.

FEBRUARY 2017

1. AVERAGE TO ATHLETIC

Broad shoulders and a taper downwards towards the leg (the trapezoid or inverted triangle body shape) is often considered the most sought after body shape. With an athletic build, you have free reign when it comes to picking shorts but always remember to keep your height in mind when choosing the length and style. When dressing according to body style, it is all about balance; with broad shoulders and biceps, you’ll want to avoid shoulder padding for risk of appearing top-heavy, and for the same reason don’t go too skinny on the pants. A slim fit tailored style can show off this body shape nicely; again, don’t go too slim when it comes to the shorts (avoid skinny) and try keeping them light-coloured to offset the upper body bulk. You’re also quite flexible when it comes to choosing patterns and prints, as appearing widened (horizontal stripes) or stretched (vertical stripes) is not much of an issue. Just steer clear of overly bold prints on the top half.

2. TALL & SLIM

Tall and thin with a shoulder width that approximately matches your hips is referred to as the rectangle. This body shape is quite common and it can be hard not to fall into boring fashion choices, living in t-shirts and jeans. The goal here is to rebalance the shape by adding width to the shoulders while keeping the bottom narrow. Rectangular bodies suit slim fit jeans and shorts, as this will create an inverted triangle or trapezoid line (make your shoulders appear wider and your waist narrower) that will give more definition to your shape, and shorter shorts often go down well too. Bold prints and patterns can also make a straightup-and-down body more interesting; you can opt for printed tops or printed shorts, or a subtle mix of both.

3. SHORT & STOUT

The oval shape is something that many men find themselves growing into, whether athletic in their youth or not, and some younger men are just naturally rounded. Your body has a roundness to it, with a large chest and tummy, but both your shoulders and legs are quite slim in comparison. Shorts for this body type should be more fitted and slimline, to show off those legs. Wearing baggy styles on slimmer legs will drown them out and give them the appearance of being much scrawnier than they are. Try to avoid contrasting colours between top and bottom as it will emphasise the oval shape, and instead choose darker colours for both. Go for shorter shorts, and wear them at your natural waistline, closer to your belly button; don't wear them too low as this will make your legs look shorter. Experiment with lighter fabrics that add less bulk, like linen.

4. SOFT IN THE MIDDLE

For the triangular-shaped body, where your hips are wider than your shoulders and you have a bigger waist, it’s a good idea to avoid those slimmer fits. At the same time, resist the temptation to hide under a huge suit; tailored shorts still look stylish when bought in the right size and opting for flatfronted designs allow your waist to be skimmed over. Go for straight leg shorts, as tapered legs will add more width to your waist. Crew neck tops teamed with tailored shorts look particularly stylish on the triangular shaped body and it is often a good idea to stick to more classic patterns and colourways, rather than going for anything too busy as this will simply draw attention to that particular area of your body. Try darker colours like charcoal, navy and black to help hide your size.

WHAT TO WEAR WITH SHORTS There are many occasions where shorts are the perfect solution. A good pair of shorts can be dressed up and down to be worn casually, for smart outdoor occasions, and even for special occasions such as a beach wedding.

Key pieces which look great with shorts: SHIRTS A great way to combine printed shorts is with a fitted plain t-shirt; throw on a white or black plain tee and you pretty much cannot go wrong. For a more formal look a polo could be worn or a shirt, as long as the shirt is tailored and not too long, or combined with a belt if tucked in, to keep the balance between top and bottom.

JUMPERS If it gets chilly, try layering by throwing on a long-sleeve tee, henley shirt or jumper. Make sure it’s not too bulky in fit and fabric as it might throw off the balance between top and shorts.

JACKETS The shorts suit has recently gained in popularity; it’s a great look if one that can easily go wrong, so keep in mind a few pointers. Make sure your shorts aren't too short, and keep the shirt & jacket tailored so they don’t cover the shorts too much. Ideally your jacket would match the shorts in style and fit. A great style for outdoor occasions.

SHOES There are many great alternatives to flip flops when it comes to footwear to wear with shorts. Make sure the shoe matches the style of the shorts; pair casual with casual and smart with smart. On the casual side espadrilles, canvas trainers and plimsolls are good options, or white sneakers with ankle socks (or ankle length sports socks for more of a streetwear vibe). And for a more formal look try loafers, huaraches, or leather sneakers, all of these without (visible) socks to keep the casual feel. Hitting the outback? Combine desert boots with stone or khaki shorts for a rugged, outdoors look.

Nissan today launched the new 2017 GT-R across the Middle East, the latest iteration of Nissan’s flagship performance vehicle, boasting a revised look both inside and out as well as major driving performance enhancements and more power. The 2017 models represent the most significant changes made to the GT-R since it was introduced in 2007, with Nissan also announcing the immediate availability of its GT-R NISMO in the region. Samir Cherfan, Managing Director of Nissan Middle East, said: “The Nissan GT-R is one of the world’s most iconic supercars, and the Middle East is a key market for it. Motorists in this region love high-performance vehicles and the GT-R embodies every aspect of the word. Its multi-performance character allows the driver to be completely immersed in the GT-R's capabilities, whether navigating corners on a twisting mountain road or simply running weekend errands in the neighborhood. We are very excited to be introducing the new 2017 model to its fans and customers in the region.” The new GT-R’s exterior gets a complete makeover across the front end. The new chrome matte finish “V-motion” grille represents one of Nissan’s latest design signatures. It has been enlarged to provide better engine cooling and features an updated mesh pattern. A new hood, which flows flawlessly from the grille, has been significantly reinforced, contributing to stability during high-speed driving. A freshly-designed front spoiler lip and front bumpers with finishers situated immediately below the headlamps give the new GT-R the look of a pure-bred racecar, while generating high levels of front downforce. The GT-R’s familiar wind-cutting shape defines its profile, but the side sills have been pushed out to improve air flow. The rear of the car also received a thorough makeover. While the GT-R’s hallmark four-ring taillights remain, look closely and you’ll notice new bodywork to help improve air flow, as well as side air vents next to the quad exhaust tips. Also, the belt line that separates the lower black section from the body panel has been heightened to give the car a wider and more aggressive look from the rear. These exterior changes don’t result just in a sportierlooking car, they create an aerodynamically efficient vehicle, with less drag but retaining the same amount of downforce as the current GT-R to keep the car stable at high speeds.

Jimmy Choo unveils the Spring Summer 2017 Women’s and Men’s campaign starring models Kiki Willems and Lou Gaillot. The inspiration for the collection is brought to life by photographer Dan Jackson with a bold set design realised by Shona Heath that features enlarged handpainted florals. The larger-than-life canvasses seduce with flora in sensuous tones of iris purple, icy blues and marigold oranges. The video sees the botanica come to life with animation that calls attention to the graphic flora-inspired shoes and bags from the Spring Summer collection. This evocative, landscape blooms for the Jimmy Choo Woman and Man to explore together. "I wanted the new campaign to portray the Jimmy Choo woman and man in the same environment. The one-of-a-kind beauty found in nature was a key inspiration for the Spring Summer collection and how we need to pause in our busy lives to stop for a moment and marvel at the wonders we co-exist with. The oversized perspective of the set reinforces the extraordinarily mesmerising power of nature.” Sandra Choi, Creative Director.
