hen it comes to seasonal fashions, Kuwait is usually first in line for the latest high street and designer musthaves. But fashion isn’t just about clothes. Let’s not forget, our homes say just as much about us as our clothes do. Interior design is big business with both private enterprises and multi-national companies making huge profits from style hungry home owners. But like all seasonal based businesses, the pressure is on to stay ahead of the game and satisfy their everdemanding customers. So what is the latest style necessity when it comes to dressing our homes? Mirrors. The benefits of mirrors are endless. Aside from their first and most obvious function of showing us what we look like, they also reflect light. This can, quite literally, lift a dull room into a light, airy space. They also reflect colour, providing a face-lift for even the most challenging of dwellings by duplicating your chosen vibrant or subtle theme. Mirrors also create the illusion of space, making a room look bigger and therefore more grand. A mirror can make a room; the right mirror can transform it.

014

SEPTEMBER 2016

Deciding on a mirror is the easy part; choosing a mirror is a little more tricky. There are thousands to choose from, ranging from small, frameless squares to giant, elaborate antiques. The size, theme and use of the room will obviously determine which type of mirror will work best, but the advice this season is be brave! Don’t be afraid to think big. A floor to ceiling, wall-sized mirror is not necessarily impractical or over the top; it can make a huge statement and add a serious ‘wow’ factor to your home. Don’t limit yourself to one mirror. A selection of mirrors, ranging in size and style, can add an unusual but attractive twist to a wall, creating an artistic gallery. Don’t miss a window of opportunity. Some mirrors can be cleverly positioned to give the impression of looking through a window. The reflection of interior flowers and plants will help to enhance this illusion.

Don’t forget the frame. The frame is often more important than the mirror itself; the reflection sometimes being secondary to the decorative value of its surround. Don’t just decorate your walls. Mirrored trays are an inexpensive and attractive way of decorating a room, dining tables in particular. Used as a base for candles or floral arrangements at a dinner party, they add shine to the room as well as the occasion. Even second-hand mirrors can look exquisite in the right environment, providing that shabby-chic look to a newly designed room. Some mirrors may have lost their reflective qualities leaving behind a distinctive mottled effect. With the right frame, this can add a touch of mystery to a room; as well as being a guaranteed talking point. With this in mind, don’t forget to scour the markets as well as the more obvious big name stores. With options to suit all budgets, Kuwait has something for everyone when it comes to decorating our homes.

KUWAITI STUDENTS SEEK BEST PAYING ENERGY AND BANKING JOBS, SURVEY FINDS Universum’s Middle East Talent Survey 2016 presents key findings from more than 700 students in five universities throughout Kuwait

Kuwait Fact box:

In terms of respondents’ personal career goals, the desire for work/life balance was a leading ambition among business/ commerce students.

K

uwait’s upcoming pool of job-seekers has prioritised high wages as their main objective when choosing a career, a leading talent survey has revealed. Hundreds of university students were questioned by the international employment research company Universum, the majority of whom listed high future earnings as their leading career preference over factors including on-the-job training, opportunities to travel, and a creative work environment. The findings show that Kuwait-based employers must offer competitive salaries in line with graduate expectations if they are to secure the best of the country’s emerging talent pool. Kuwait was one of six countries surveyed as part of the company’s Middle East Talent Survey 2016, along with the UAE, Egypt, Lebanon, Qatar and

016

SEPTEMBER 2016

- Average age of respondent: 21.5 - Average expected monthly salary (male): 1,041 KWD - Average expected monthly salary (female): 989 KWD Saudi Arabia. Conducted over a six-month period, the research uncovers university students' attitudes about employers and what drives their career decision-making. Claudia Tattanelli, Chairman of the Strategic Advisory Board at Universum, said: “The findings offer employers a key insight into the priorities of Kuwait-based students. Firms that offer leadership opportunities, an innovative working environment, and the chance to travel overseas will be popular among graduates. However, they may miss out on the top talent if they are unable to offer the most competitive salaries.” Universum is a global leader in employer attractiveness research and insights. The company delivers a range of services to empower employers to better attract, recruit and retain talent. Its Kuwait survey gathered responses from 709 male

Research on what drives students’ career decision-making reveals that Kuwait students seek competitive salaries in the sectors of oil and gas, renewable and nuclear energy, and banking and female students in five universities throughout the country. The majority of respondents were studying in fields related to banking/commerce, followed by engineering/IT and humanities/liberal arts/education/law. When asked what they looked for in their future employers, the majority of respondents across genders and degree subjects said they sought high future earnings, followed by on-the-job training and a company that respects its staff. Comparing priorities between genders, women highly-rated opportunities for overseas travel and the need for a creative working environment, while men listed ‘respect for its people’ and ‘prestige’ as other key preferences. The desire for performance recognition was another leading preference among business/ commerce and engineering/IT students. In terms of respondents’ personal career goals, the desire for work/life balance was a leading ambition among business/commerce students. The objective to be creative and entrepreneurial jumped four places from Universum’s 2015 survey to rank second, making it a more desirable goal than job security and leadership opportunities. When asked to name their favoured career industries, more than half of business/commerce students chose the banking sector, followed by professional services. When naming their ideal employer, the majority of respondents studying these subjects chose Kuwait Oil Company. Google, Kuwait Investment Authority and National Bank of Kuwait were also highly sought after companies to work for, the survey found. Turning to engineering/IT students, the ambition to be creative and entrepreneurial was the most commonly mentioned personal career goal, jumping four places from the 2015 survey. The majority of engineering/IT students chose the energy sector as the industry they would ideally work in after graduating. Engineering and manufacturing, aerospace and defence, and software and computer services were also popular choices. Kuwait Oil Company was the top choice

The Kuwait Oil Company topped the list of ideal employer rankings for both business and commerce, as well as engineering and IT students. Google was pipped to the number one spot by the draw of a prestigious energy company that pays staff top dollar, with other public sector entities also placing highly among engineering/IT students with close to half of respondents selecting the energy giant. Google, Apple, Q8 and Microsoft made up the top five. “The survey reveals that employers face a daunting task if they are to attract the best graduates away from Kuwait Oil Company,” said Mrs Tattanelli. “However, our survey has revealed that more and more Kuwaiti students are seeking the chance to be creative and innovative in their careers, which is something that smaller companies can offer. The Universum survey is a crucial tool in helping employers get an insight into what students are prioritising in their future careers and enabling companies to match what they offer to student expectations.”

More than half of business/ commerce students chose the banking sector, followed by professional services. Engineering and IT students veered towards careers in engineering and tech hardware.

PRESERVING YOUR FERTILITY TIMELINE Freezing eggs provides women with a chance to preserve their fertility

Dr. Monika Chawla

T

he technology provides the option to prolong a woman’s fertility timeline to ensure that they don’t miss out on receiving all of the joys of motherhood. This can be achieved by capitalising on a woman’s prime window of healthy and quality eggs by preserving them externally, ensuring that whatever a woman’s age may be, she still has the opportunity to produce a healthy baby. Reasons for fertility preservation There are a number of reasons why women wish to preserve their fertility. The primary reason is social. For example, women may not necessarily be at a stage in their life to get pregnant due to either career or other life priorities. Furthermore, medical reasons such as cancer treatment may mean that egg freezing is essential for women who wish to protect the possibility of having children. How it works The technology of egg freezing has greatly evolved over the last 10 years to optimise success rates of healthy conception. Scientific and medical advancements have produced a new technology called vitrification, which has an extensive range of medical applications and is now applied to the freezing of eggs. Traditionally, in the olden days, the method revolved around slow freezing of human eggs. This new vitrification technology enables dehydration which leads to less water retention in the egg, reducing the number of damaging ice crystals and increasing the eggs survival rate to up to 85% - a great improvement on the 50% possibility with the older freezing techniques, which employ a more linear freezing method. The increased survival rates of eggs truly prove 018

SEPTEMBER 2016

vitrification technology’s achievements and which now deliver a pregnancy rate of around 60% in women under the age of 35 (for those that have at least 8 to 10 eggs frozen). The technology is still evolving, which should ensure an even greater degree of success in future. Furthermore, statistics show that over half the number of IVF cycles are now performed with the aid of egg freezing, demonstrating the effectiveness of this technology when applied to patients. A valuable technique which is often used in tandem with egg freezing is a process called ovarian hyperstimulation, which utilises medicinal drugs used during IVF treatments to stimulate a woman’s ovaries to produce high egg quantities. Egg freezing is used during stimulation cycle intervals, providing the body an opportunity to rest. Ovarian hyper-stimulation is also a positive technology for women with a poor ovarian reserve, collecting high numbers of eggs by freezing in cumulative cycles. This gives women a reasonable chance of pregnancy which is comparable to those with normal egg reserves. Chances of Success The chance of a successful pregnancy is based on two factors - firstly age and secondly ovarian reserve - both of which are key considerations for a patient’s potential to produce more eggs when given stimulation. If the patient is young and has a good ovarian reserve, the success rates are usually higher. The older the patient, the more likely the quality of the eggs can be questioned because of the chromosomal abnormalities within the eggs. The technology provides an opportunity to extend fertility and mitigate against a range of modern challenges, ensuring that every fertile woman has an opportunity to bear children.

FLIGHT DELAY?

Gill Sherry

A SMALL PRICE TO PAY.

I

t never ceases to amaze me how something as innocuous as a delayed flight can transform perfectly normal human beings into unrecognizable versions of their former self. I was unfortunate enough to pass through Dubai airport on 4th August and, as a result, was caught up in the immediate aftermath of the Emirates crash landing which resulted in 300 people running for their lives as the plane caught fire on the runway. Miraculously, all those on board survived, thanks largely to the professional and efficient conduct of the Emirates crew. Sadly, one of the fire fighters tackling the blaze was not so lucky and was killed when the plane exploded. The carcass of the stricken plane was still smoldering on the runway the following day, a poignant reminder of what might have been and how quickly life can change. In this particular case, the psychological scars suffered by those on board are likely to outweigh the minor physical injuries sustained. It must have been a traumatic experience for all concerned and one the rest of us, Inshallah, will never have to endure. As a result of the incident in Dubai, my flight from Kuwait was delayed by four hours. At the time, tired, uncomfortable and impatient to reach my destination, I was far from happy. However, the passengers from

020

SEPTEMBER 2016

Flight EK521 were never far from my mind and I consoled myself that a short delay in an airport lounge was nothing compared to the trauma they must have suffered; not to mention the unimaginable grief being experienced by the fireman’s family. What a pity others couldn’t bring themselves to find a similar level of compassion. Predictably, the queues at Dubai’s ‘Connections’ counters were snaking through the terminal like an angry Cobra. Although officials were trying their best to deal with the ever-growing backlog of disgruntled passengers, they were clearly struggling to handle the unexpected number of venomous outbursts. I’m sure, with hindsight and the benefit of experience, they will be better equipped should such an incident happen again. However, it has to be said, this particular disruption was not met with the expert efficiency we come to expect in Dubai. Whilst the crew of Flight EK521 can be applauded for their handling of the life-threatening emergency, the team members within the airport were less than prepared for the domino effect that followed. Whatever the circumstances, there really is no excuse for aggressive, abusive and threatening behaviour. Already exhausted following a sleepless night at Kuwait airport, I found myself standing in a stationary queue for almost three hours waiting to arrange a replacement flight

for my missed connection. The majority of my fellow travellers, equally fatigued, waited patiently alongside me, displeased but understanding. The first example of unacceptable conduct came from a passenger who approached a junior official and began shouting and pointing with unrestrained malice. Unfortunately, unprepared (or perhaps untrained) for such outbursts, the official engaged the only defence mechanism he knew and retaliated with equal spite. This only incensed the passenger further, resulting in raised voices, raised fists and, quite probably, disciplinary action for the official. By this time, certain people in line had become fractious and decided to partake in a spot of queue jumping. Those affected, now sitting on their luggage or on the floor, were barely able to stand let alone object. Inevitably, this again resulted in raised voices along with the scrappy pushing and shoving usually reserved for the school playground. Probably the most frustrating thing about the whole situation was the lack of information available to passengers. Other than the words ‘cancelled’ or ‘delayed’ displayed on the departure boards, there was precious little to keep travellers updated. Solo passengers were perhaps the most unfortunate, having no choice but to stand in line and wait an inordinate amount of time in the hope of finally reaching the front. Those travelling with partners or family could at least take turns to leave the ever-growing queue in an attempt to seek at best, information, or at worst, a free bottle of water. The second case of abusive behaviour came from a Business Class passenger who, rightly or wrongly, believed he was entitled to priority service and refused, point blank, to stand in the queue. His objections could be heard throughout the terminal and only heightened the frustrations of those who had already waited for many hours to be served. Opinions will differ on whether this particular individual should have been treated any differently to the hundreds of others who had missed connecting flights. Either way, surely the prudent way to deal with him was to escort him away from the agitated audience and handle his complaint with discretion. Unfortunately, again probably due to lack of training, the member of staff concerned simply gave in (publicly) to

his obnoxious demands and sent him merrily on his way. Unsurprisingly, this only added fuel to the fire and the already incensed throng of passengers began to make their own demands with ever-increasing volume. Having witnessed one irate person getting his own way by simply raising his voice, they obviously believed they should do the same; a recipe for disaster if ever there was one. Despite feeling just as frustrated as everyone else in the queue, I managed to maintain my composure and eventually reached the counter. Understandably, the clerk looked tired and harassed after bearing the brunt of everybody’s anger for most of the day. Conscious of the fact that none of it was her fault, I was courteous, polite and patient as she tried to find me a replacement flight. Unfortunately, her colleagues had to tolerate less understanding passengers who thought it was acceptable to treat them as their verbal punch bag. Eventually, clutching my precious replacement boarding pass, I thanked the clerk and made my way to the gate. En route, I spotted at least two other ‘Connections’ counters with virtually no queue and had to ask myself why these were not made apparent to the accumulating passengers in the previous hall. Thanks to yet another delay, I was still unable to wave goodbye to my extended stay at Dubai airport. One thing that struck me as I waited in the departure lounge was the selfish, inconsiderate attitude of so many passengers. Not once did I hear reference to the incident which caused the delay in the first place and which put so many lives at risk. Not once did I hear an expression of regret at the tragedy which claimed one life and could quite easily have been so much worse. Not once did anyone mutter words of sympathy for those involved in the near-catastrophic crash landing, evidence of which was still lying on the runway. Instead, I heard criticism, complaints, self-pity and hostility. Whilst it was obvious the airport’s disaster recovery plan could have been better, the loss of a plane (and so nearly its passengers) and the subsequent affect on airline staff, should not be underestimated. A little respect and understanding from delayed passengers is surely not too much to ask. After all, what’s a little lost time compared to the loss of a life?

What was your first big break in the industry? I would say, without any doubt, it came at the greatest hotel ‘Le Normandy’ based at Deauville in France. It was a unique moment; one we only live once or twice in our life. I think it was more about the emotions I felt during the shoot, this feeling of being at home. I met so many kind and adorable people. This place was like a sweet, closed cocoon. Some emotions can’t be explained with words and for this I invite you to visit it to understand and discover by yourself this fabulous feeling. Do you have a funny story about modeling? Lots of funny things happen in the modeling world! I remember one of my very first shoots with evening dresses. I started to walk and someone took a picture with a flash. The flash blinded me and I fell on the knees of a man in the audience. I apologized and he said ‘No, don’t apologize. If this could happen each time, I wouldn’t disturb my neighbors by snoring during the parade’. Who are your role models in this business? I’ve got a huge admiration for Nelson Mandela. I admire his strength, his bravour and how he can think. He’s an inspiration to me. Also, Aishwarya Rai. I like her journey in life; how she became, stayed to live and talk with humility Tell us a little about yourself - growing up, and modesty. I never thought I would become a model. When I was young, I wanted to become an illustrator and graphic designer. But life brings us other experiences, new dreams and other ways of thinking. I became a model quite by chance. I started sharing beauty recipes for skin and hair on Instagram. Day by day, my profile grew and brands asked me to work with them. People started to follow me and together we built a friendship. I’m surprised, in good way of course! I never could expect such a marvelous adventure like this. 032

What magazine covers have you appeared on? I’m still a very young model so have not yet had the opportunity to appear on magazine covers - but I hope I will one day! Does modeling give you the opportunity to travel? I live very near Deauville and Trouville, which are marvelous balnear cities. But I would love to travel and to discover other countries. In my opinion, it’s a personal enrichment to know different people, different religions, different languages, landscape and traditions. So yes, it’s really a wish in future. What do you wear in your everyday life? I wear casual clothes which are comfortable. I love wearing jeans, joggings and t-shirts. In short, I favour a casual style. What do you want to achieve in the future? Do you plan to always be a model or do you want to do something else? In the short term, I would love to buy my own house with my mum so we have our own cocoon. It’s so important to get somewhere where we feel totally at peace to breathe and revitalize. In the long term, I’d like to be a model but I know it isn’t possible all the time. I would love to create a fashion line - I already drew some clothes - and I would love to create my own entirely natural cosmetics for skin and hair; I truly believe in what Earth can give us. Finally, my main achievement is being happy. What is your training routine like and what does it involve? As a model, I need to have a healthy life. Sport is important and I do one hour every day. I practice fitness to gain muscle and yoga to relax myself. I’m going to create some exercise videos on Instagram to share with my followers and show how I take care of myself every day. What are you favourite shoe, clothes and make-up brands? I have so many! If I really need to choose I love Public Desire. All of their shoes are absolutely amazing design and quality. They are original and comfortable; in short, you can’t go wrong when you

take shoes from them. For clothes, I’m addicted to Missguided, Boohoo and Hot Miami Styles. Their style is casual but at the same time very chic and elegant. Finally, for makeup, The Balm is one of my favourites with Urban Decay. When you're not busy modeling, what are some of your favourite things to do? My work takes up a lot of time but when I get free time I love being with my family. They are everything to me - especially my mum and my cousin - they are my heaven in peace, my oasis of calm. For hobbies, I love drawing. My first wish was to become an illustrator, so when I can, I draw everything I see. It’s a real relaxation – the same as when I cook. I love world food and to discover new things. What's your favourite snack? I love Smoothie Bowl. I take one every day after sport. You can take what fruits you want with muesli; it’s really quick and fresh. When I do one, I pretend I’m an artist and I decorate it as I want just because I love being hungry before eating! I also love eating peanut butter with dates. I know it looks strange but it’s so delicious! What is your all time favourite movie? My all time favourite movie is, and always will be, Devdas. I love everything about this movie. It’s a fabulous and sad love story. I’m a romantic soul with passionate feelings. The poetry in this movie penetrates my soul. What's your motto in life? Nothing is impossible in life when we really want to! Which of your own physical features are you most proud of? My Eyes. I’ve always loved my eyes. I’ve inherited them from my origins and of course, I’m proud to wear them. Your favourite quote? ‘May your choices reflect your hopes not your fears’ - Nelson Mandela. Can you give some advice to those who want to become a model ? How should they start, what should they know and how should they look? If I could give any piece of advice it would be to stay yourself. Be yourself and you’ll be unique. The modeling industry often transforms models and I think this loses personality. Then, before starting, you need to get a professional book to present to the agency. If it’s really your dream, never give up and work harder and harder with humility. Your message for our magazine and our readers: I like your magazine a lot and it’s such an honor to be interviewed by you. I have a special thought for everyone who will read those words. Since, I started modeling, I have met so many adorable, kind and touching people. Contrary to popular belief, there is a lot of love out there. I would like to say, don’t forget to express love; show it because we all need it. I think about everything that can happen on Earth at this time and I think about each and every person. I pray for them, I send them all my support. Also, I would love to thank you for this special moment with you.

When in Rome…

W

e’ve all heard of the proverb ‘When in Rome, do as the Romans do’ but I wonder how many of us actually abide but its proffer. It suggests that it would be polite, even advantageous, to recognise the customs of a particular country or society, and to adjust our own behaviour accordingly. In other words, if the age old proverb is to be believed, we should behave as those around us do, conform to the larger society and respect the beliefs and practices of a local culture. Clearly not everyone in Kuwait pays heed to this adage. Whilst predominantly Muslim, Kuwait is home to a number of religions, cultures and nationalities, most of whom, I’m happy to say, adhere to the strict customs that operate in this proud Gulf State. Some, however, clearly didn’t get the memo confirming the dress code. During a visit to a popular beach club recently, I was astounded to see a woman parading around in nothing more than a piece of string. No doubt she’d call it a bikini, but so little did it offer in terms of fabric, it was more akin to dental floss than an article of clothing. Whilst she clearly had no desire to adopt the ‘When in Rome’ principle, she obviously had great belief in that other well-known expression ‘If you’ve got it, flaunt it’. Whether she had indeed got ‘it’ was clearly a matter of opinion. Regardless of her chosen principles, surely it would be advisable to remember yet another popular saying; ‘There’s a time and a place’. In this particular case, a family beach in Kuwait was neither the time, nor the place, to wear such a flimsy, revealing, and it has to be said, offensive, item of clothing. If nothing else, it showed a complete lack of

036

SEPTEMBER 2016

respect for the country in which she has chosen to reside. I’d like to be able to defend her actions and plead ignorance on her behalf but even the most oblivious and uneducated individuals couldn’t fail to be aware of Kuwait’s conservative stance when it comes to dressing in public. That said, it wasn’t just the locals who were offended. Her chosen outfit was bordering on indecent and totally inappropriate for display on a family beach. Children should not have been subjected to such a blatant display of flesh, the likes of which would’ve been out of place in even the most liberal of settings. Locals and expats alike, embarrassed by the unwelcome eyesore, didn’t know where to look. One could argue that responsibility lies with the management of the beach club for ensuring that members adhere to its dress code. However, people will always insist on pushing the boundaries and bending (or breaking) the rules, regardless of what they may be, or how strict their enforcement. Probably the most ironic thing about this particular example of rule-breaking was the fact that the guilty party was a little over-confident about her appearance. There’s another expression favoured by the British which is particularly apt to describe this rebellious individual – ‘You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear’. Basically, you can’t make something refined from something which is vulgar and, in her particular case, the ‘mutton dressed as lamb’ look was sadly not a good one. Sometimes, it really is better to leave something to the imagination and to show a little respect; not just for others, but for yourself as well. If ever there was a case of ‘When in Rome’ being the preferred rationale, this was most definitely it.

audi Design Week will be open to the public from 6-9 October, with more than 100 exhibitors, installations and talks taking place in Riyadh, at the Al-Faisaliah at Durrat Al-Riyadh Resort in Riyadh’s Banban district. Exhibitors and creatives have been asked to explore the theme of illumination through design. Follow Saudi Design Week on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for updates on the latest news on the designers, curators and brands taking part; introducing some of the key exhibitors and what to expect from them in October. Some of the projects to really look forward to include:

Special Focus: Humanistic Design The exhibition will examine what consists of ‘designing for social welfare’. The concept and curating is made by the Fair’s organizers in an attempt to elevate the conversation of what kind of social change design has the potential to promote. The exhibition will consist of two parts: the ‘Wearable Habitation’ exhibit in partnership with Dr Harriet Harriss from the Royal College of Arts in London, UK showcasing a design RCA students have developed as an affordable, allin-one coat, tent and sleeping bag to help deal with Syria's humanitarian crisis. The second component of the exhibition will be and the poster design exhibit showcasing the finalists from ‘What Design Can Do’, an initiative headed and developed by Richard van der Laken exhibiting concepts from 20 finalists who responded to the call for designers looking to improve the lives of refugees from a competition held early summer 2016. The Al Baydha Project Al Baydha is a national project, based in rural Western Saudi Arabia, about 50 kilometers south of Mecca, which is focused on promoting a heritage preservation program and simultaneously alleviating poverty. The Al Baydha Project initiative has been working with Wondros, a US-based company, and will be exhibiting a virtual reality station. The exhibition will highlight the experience and give visitors an

Sensory Room The Sensory Room is a showroom where there will be a wide array of both material and interactive displays to promote a more engaged relationship with design. The audience can engage and interact with materials and sensations that help with product design. O Design Incubator The Saudi Design Week team, alongside an advisory board, will be launching a new initiative at this year’s Fair. O Design Incubator is a not-for-profit incubator program that will provide opportunities to Saudi creatives through mentorship programs, internships and scholarship opportunities at local, regional and international platforms. By working as a bridge between Saudi designers and the design community it will provide an unparalleled opportunity to connect and strengthen the design community in the country. O Design Incubator will be officially launched at the annual Gala dinner, which will also be a fundraiser to raise funds and support for the incubator’s initiatives.

HIJABI BEAUTY AND FASHION ICON WAFA YAHYA LISTED 4 REASONS FOR DEFYING THE DEBATE ON WOMEN WEARING WHAT THEY WANT WHY WOMEN SHOULD WEAR WHAT THEY WANT INCLUDING A ‘BURKINI’!

Dubai-based beauty and fashion icon Wafa Yahya - the brain behind the beauty and style blog Wafa’s Diary - shed some light on the recent controversy banning the popular ‘burkini’ swimwear in some parts of the world. The seaside city of Cannes, France, has made the controversial decision to ban women from wearing burkinis (full-body swimsuits), resulting in major outrage worldwide. Concerned demographics such as Muslim women and Hijabi style advocates do not agree with the new law. “First of all I want to state that I am totally against forcing people to wear a certain kind of clothing. Whether a person wants to cover more or less is a personal issue. At the end of the day, we are all different and these differences should be respected by everyone and guaranteed by law.” Wafa Yahya said. “The recent move of banning women from wearing burkinis is supposed to protect women, but the ordinance ignores the fact that wearing a burkini - just like wearing any other type of clothes - is a personal choice and means of expressing individual style.” she added As a Dubai-based Hijabi beauty and fashion icon, Wafa Yahya understands the value of freedom when it comes to choosing personal style as well as respect for cultures. So, in defense of the burkini, here are 4 reasons for defying the myths and breaking the stereotypes:

044

SEPTEMBER 2016

1. Celebration of freedom I want to challenge the theory that women do not have the freedom to choose what they would like to wear, whether on the beach or at work. It is not true. Women can wear whatever we want and this is all a personal choice. Though some are falling over themselves to restrict freedom of dress, most celebrate the meaning of true democracy by buying one of many choices available; reminding the world that égalité is also about diversité. 2. Diversity makes us all unique Whether you wear a burkini, a two piece swimsuit, or a diving suit, it is a reflection of personal taste, culture, religious view, ethnicity and race. Recognizing and valuing the many differences that make us who we are is vital to our culture and values. Our diversity also encompasses many differences that are not so easily seen, such as life experiences, religion and family situations, to name just a few. Accepting the different assortments in one society reflects tolerance and what makes us unique. 3. It’s Fashionable! The burkini market has boomed in recent years, giving many Muslim fashion designers new ways to experiment with design. Many fashion houses introduced a burkini line ‘to keep the body covered for spiritual or health reasons without compromising on style’. Just like any other popular fashion apparel, the burkini is simply a variation of swimwear. Men are allowed to wear scuba suits on the beach or at the pool (either for style purposes or health reasons) and that is totally fine - so why not burkinis for women? 4. Ordering women what to wear is a violation for human rights Liberty and justice mean giving people the right to choose what they want to wear – just as they have the right to choose what they want to eat, where they want to live and what they want to study. It is morally unacceptable to obligate people on what choices they make for their lives, including clothing. The right to choose clothing is an aspect of the right to an adequate standard of living and, as such, is regarded as something that needs to be guaranteed to all human beings.

YUMMY FOR THEIR LITTLE TUMMY:

Back to School Sherifa Alasousi

B

ack to school means back to busy days. Easy, quick recipes are just what you need to save the day. When I think of the words ‘easy’ and ‘quick’ I automatically think ‘finger food’. Finger foods are fun, yummy and creative for both babies and toddlers. Here are two of my favourite finger food recipes that my baby and husband both love. These recipes are suitable for babies who can handle texture and can mash foods with their gums. It’s great for moms and dads too!

Sweet Potato & Carrots

Broccoli & Cheddar Cheese Nuggets

INGREDIENTS

INGREDIENTS

n 6 medium/large sweet potatoes n 6 carrots n ¼ cup of olive oil n Cinnamon, ginger, brown sugar (optional)

METHOD 1.Preheat oven to 400 degrees F 2.Scrub sweet potatoes and carrots - clean and/or peel them if baby cannot handle the skins 3.Cut the sweet potatoes and carrots into sizes that will suit your needs or cut into strips that you may then cut down after baking 4.In a large bowl, add the olive oil 5.(Optional) Add cinnamon, ginger and a pinch of brown sugar 6.Toss the sweet potatoes and carrots into the bowl and stir so that the vegetables are drenched with the olive oil mix 7.Dump mixture onto a baking sheet and drizzle the remaining olive oil in the bowl over the mixture on the baking sheet. Stir and swirl the potatoes on the baking sheet before placing in oven. Bake for approx 30-45 minutes or until tender.

The skins may become crispy but the actual potato ‘meat’ will not. They will be slightly mushy. These will not look or bake up like regular white potato French Fries so don’t be alarmed.

n 1 16-oz pack frozen broccoli, cooked, drained, and chopped n 1 cup seasoned bread crumbs (you could try using baby cereal if you want) n 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese (use real cheese, not a ‘processed’ product) n 3 large eggs or 5 egg yolks (substitute eggs with fruit or veggie puree if desired) n Olive oil (to coat baking sheet) n Garlic powder, pepper, basil, oregano (optional)

METHOD 1.Preheat oven to 375 degrees F 2.Lightly coat a baking sheet with olive oil and set aside 3.Combine all remaining ingredients and mix well 4.(Optional) Add seasonings like garlic powder, pepper, extra basil or oregano if you prefer 5.Shape mixture into nuggets or fun shapes such as squares or fingers and place on baking tray 6.Bake for 20 to 25 minutes (turn nuggets after 15 minutes).

Serve warm. Be sure to crumble these if your baby needs smaller pieces to pick up.

Natalie Rose Choonoo

CHOOSING FRAMES FOR CHILDREN

N 048

SEPTEMBER 2016

o parent likes to hear that their child needs spectacles. However, considering the prevalence of vision problems lately, it may be a reality which we need to face and embrace. Choosing spectacles can be a daunting task for us as adults and with a child it can be that much harder. Here are some tips to ease your visit when choosing spectacles for your little ones.

2. Plastic, metal or rimless

1. Prescription

3. Fashion

This is the main concern when choosing spectacles. Always consult your doctor or optician about limitations that you may encounter due to the prescription. High prescriptions can be thicker towards the edges or centers, depending on whether your child is near-sighted or farsighted. In that case, smaller frames can be prescribed as this will make the spectacles look more appealing and decrease any "blurry bits" your child may experience towards the lens edges.

The reality is, kids can be mean to their fellow peers who wear spectacles. Teasing and bullying is common. It is important to have your child directly involved in the frame choice process. Involve your child by enquiring about their favorite colors or a style they have seen their favorite celebrity wearing. The object is to get your child to wear the spectacles and to feel confident and comfortable with this new look. Remember, you can never be "too cool for school!"

Plastic frames are considered to be more flexible, durable and less likely to break. However, metal frames also incorporate the same characteristics. Rimless frames are lightweight. They appear to be fragile but innovative titanium designs are bypassing that myth. Allergies and sporting needs are the main considerations when deciding between plastic and metal frames.

4. Bridge fit Your child's nose is not fully developed yet. Therefore they normally require a smaller fitting of their frame on their nose. This is important as this will prevent the glasses from sliding down. Children tend to look under or over their frame intentionally. This can decrease their vision since they are not looking through the optical centers of the lenses.

or require the use of sunglasses when outdoors. Opting for photochromic lenses will eliminate the need for an additional pair of outdoor spectacles. All lens options must be carefully discussed with your optician, so that your child is obtaining maximum visual benefits from their spectacle lenses.

7. Sports eyewear

Cable temples which wrap around the ear are most useful for babies and toddlers as these spectacles are most likely to stay in place. You can also supplement a normal pair of spectacles by using a strap which can be adjusted for comfort at the back of the head. It is also important to make sure the temple is not too long or too short and is something that can be adjusted by your optician.

Your child is probably involved in many after school activities. Most of the time the activity is something sports related. When getting your child new spectacles, it is a good idea to invest in a pair of sports goggles. These can be safely used during all sporting activities, especially if they are fitted with polycarbonate lenses as this will provide added protection during play. Sports goggles are designed to fit close to the face in order to avoid eye injury therefore keeping you as a parent at ease concerning sports and eye related injuries.

6. Lens materials and coatings

8. Back-up pair

5. Temple length and styles

Glass lenses are a NO for children because they break easily and are heavy. Always consider impact resistant lenses for children. They run, play and throw things. Equally so, their lenses should be durable, like trivex or polycarbonate lens materials. However, it is not always suitable to do these lenses in certain prescriptions. I must emphasis that no lens is scratch resistant. This is a "fairy tale." The surface of all lenses can be scratched. A hard coating treats the surface and hardens it, therefore minimizing scratches. A blue lens filter is another new lens coating which is specifically designed to ease visual strain on digital/smart devices. Photochromic lenses are recommended for children who are light sensitive

I cannot stress the importance of a back-up pair; be it for yourself or your child. For children it is a must. Every day without wearing their spectacles is hindering their visual development. High prescriptions always require a backup pair. It is a wise idea, to always keep your child's old spectacles in a safe place, so if emergencies do occur, a "plan B" is available until the proper pair is made up. Feel free to visit International Optique's Kids Boutique for any queries you may have related to children's spectacles. Our friendly and fun staff are looking forward to assisting you. www.cpmagazine.net

This strange yet familiar landscape forms an impressive backdrop to the LOUIS VUITTON LOVES PRINTEMPS event. This universe is inhabited by figures in constant movement that embody a lighter, more sensual version of the Louis Vuitton woman wearing the 2016/2017 Autumn-Winter ready-towear collection. The Boulevard Haussmann windows depict a fantastic voyage to a new horizon and the voyage continues inside the store with a pop-up store located in the atrium, which echoes the theme of raw materials and a futuristic spirit.

EXCLUSIVE Exclusive creations MARIA LUISA

Printemps is paying tribute to Maria Luisa Poumaillou in an exhibition entitled: "Maria Luisa, A History of Fashion". In an exclusive Printemps event, twelve designers will present a look or an accessory of their choice that the department store's Fashion Editor has worn, could have worn or that they would like to see her wear. For the occasion, an event will be organised to coincide with the closing of Paris Fashion Week. "Maria Luisa, A History of Fashion" exhibition, from 22 September to 22 October 2016.

Supple, hard-wearing and incredibly malleable, the Noé bag and its "small format" version are direct descendants of the very first model designed in 1932 by Gaston-Louis Vuitton for a champagne maker who wanted to be able to carry five bottles in a single bag. For the Printemps event, the Monogram print of the Petit Noé will be covered in patches and luggage stickers in a limited edition. This Monogram Voyage theme is reproduced at Printemps with a selection of exclusive products including a stole and a T-shirt available in two colours and, of course, the Petit Noé bag.

JACQUEMUS

Navy and white take centre stage this winter. The collection is rather like a puzzle with complementary and contrasting pieces. The focus is on Barbès-style checks, oversize square jacket shoulders, skirt hemlines and asymmetric lines. A couture spirit reminiscent of the 1950s with its leg-of-mutton sleeves, seemingly weightlessly sculpted clothes with touches of fluidity, and wool suits create an unstructured look held together with large ties. Simon Porte Jacquemus sells his creations all over the world and notably at Opening Ceremony in New York, Colette in Paris, and Dover Street Market in London. His 2016 winter collection will be available exclusively at the Maria Luisa store in Printemps Fashion.

CY CHOI

Now based in Seoul, the designer is known for his avantgarde vision of men's clothing and especially for his very clean lines, contrasting colours and a subtle mix of sports and work clothes. Like other up-and-coming Korean creators, his work is multiply inspired by urban culture and contemporary myths, and incorporates references from 1950s' America as well as punk and hip hop.

We Are Not

We Are Not offers a real alternative to luxury highend labels by creating timeless, fashionable and affordable pieces made from high-quality leather. This premium, timeless yet fashionable leather goods label produces a range of 18 essential luxury models in 8 colours, offering high-quality leather bags under â‚Ź300. We Are Not focuses on simple designs and high-quality materials such as nappa calfskin, which is selected from premium skins for its fine grain, sophistication and silky-soft texture. The designs are structured, lightweight and beautifully crafted thanks to the savoir-faire of the local artisans. The brand is available at Printemps Fashion for winter 2016.

Selim Mouzannar

Selim Mouzannar, born in Beirut in 1963, is the son of a family of jewellers. His work is strongly influenced by Beirut's old gold souk where he spent his childhood – at that time an epicentre of human encounters, trade, creativity, rich colours and strong sensations. Selim has a real sense of poetry and his optimism and humour transport us through his jewellery collections, which feature colour variations and marry the traditional with the new. His latest creations and collections evoke the desire to travel and dream. For the 'A Thousand and One Nights' collection, the jeweller has taken inspiration from the dazzling colours of the East where the sky switches from ultramarine to ink black. Today, Selim Mouzannar's creations are available exclusively at Printemps on the Right Bank in Paris.

LOUIS VUITTON

Louis Vuitton takes inspiration from a cosmic voyage to mark the brand's exclusive collaboration with Printemps. The store windows and the atrium of the Parisian department store will depict a spectacular voyage through a vast imaginary landscape and through space and time, brought together by a vision of femininity in movement. Against this visual backdrop, a range of exclusive products including bag charms, items from the readyto-wear range, leather goods and footwear, will be showcased. Between 27 August and 8 October, eleven Printemps Fashion and Beauty windows will be transformed into a galactic universe rather like a Grand Canyon moonscape with ochre and luminous blue tones in which accessories, leather goods and ready-towear items will be weightlessly suspended. Forget about lifeless mannequins, tomorrow's heroines epitomise the 2016/2017 Autumn-Winter Louis Vuitton ready-to-wear collection with ethereal sensuality. A mesh dress and two styles of boots will be available exclusively in the atrium's pop-up store, which will be open until 22 October. Inspired by the 2016/2017 Autumn-Winter fashion show, this event showcases a collection created exclusively for Printemps in the unique setting of the iconic Boulevard Haussmann department store. A fantastic exploration beyond known borders, Printemps' visual concept takes you on a bespoke voyage into the future where luxury and lightness go hand in hand. www.cpmagazine.net

GINETTE NY

Frédérique Dessemond, the creator of the Ginette NY brand, was born in Marseilles and grew up in a very special place: the Cité Radieuse, designed by Le Corbusier. This creative milieu inspired the essence of the brand, which was founded in 2002: a modernity which arises from the collision of these two worlds and the symbol of which we find in all Ginette NY collections. With pure materials and natural stones, inspiration from design and architecture, the luxury of simplicity, and the pure forms, all her collections reflect her singular artistic expression.

Umit Benan

A gentleman of character and something of a fashion wild card, each season Umit Benan designs a range with serious attitude. For winter 2016, the designer has taken inspiration from Japan – no doubt fuelled by his 16 visits to the country in 2015. Influenced by the chic Mafioso style, this collection references the Yakuza, but reinterpreted by the creator who adds a touch of modernity and sportswear codes with designs inspired by the outfits used on tatami practice mats. The kimono cut is everywhere, leather baseball-style jackets are worn with jogging bottoms belted with a band of knotted leather, printed jackets with and wide wool bouclette coats are paired with skirts, and shirts with ultra-long sleeves are worn open over white cotton vest tops.

Marsha Hat

Makins Hats are manufactured using the traditional method in New York. They have since been worn by the great and good in the Art and Fashion worlds such as Kevin Garnett, Samuel L. Jackson and Brad Pitt. The brand is now available exclusively at Printemps.

La Garçonnière

La Garçonnière is a collaborative concept store that showcases elegant and sophisticated accessories created by independent designers. For winter 2016, the concept will be housed in a pop-up store in Printemps Men creating a novel version of the historic store's universe. In a modular space, a selection of eight new brands will be in residence every two weeks. Products ranging from entry level to limited edition are available.

Vuarnet

IPHORIA

The collection includes a range of fun leather accessories such as clutches, make-up bags, and key rings as well as scarves. Just like a signature, each accessory is a true fashion talisman and adds a real touch of style to women's wardrobes. A selection of this winter's most iconic new designs can be seen in the denim multi-fashion floor in Printemps Fashion.

SEPTEMBER 2016

Vuarnet's story began on the Rue Boissy d’Anglas in Paris in 1957 in the workshops of Roger Pouilloux. The brand is available exclusively at Printemps this season. For the occasion, two exclusive models will be available in the "Le Solaire" area located on the ground floor of Printemps Fashion. For women, there is the "Romy" model, which was inspired by Romy Schneider who wore the glasses with incredible elegance in the cult scene of Claude Chabrol's film "Innocents with Dirty Hands". For men, there is the "Glacier" model, as worn by the brand's ambassador Vincent Cassel in this season's campaign.

P.A.R.O.S.H.

For winter 2016, check out the military styles, Baroque print suits, long flowing dresses and pyjama trousers. Military-style jackets and coats decorated with escutcheons and golden buttons are paired with leopard prints, from P.A.R.O.S.H. The colour range is very dynamic: gold tints are everywhere – on all-over floral prints or the sequins of a long skirt. The khaki and navy blue range is punctuated with touches of beige. A selection of winter 2016 designs is available near the denim brands at Printemps Fashion.

THE DENIM SECTION

The idea: to offer a choice of perfect pieces from a selection of ready-to-wear and accessory brands right next to the must-have, ontrend denim items, making it easy to create a complete look based on a denim piece. Next to the 100% denim brands, visitors will find the most sought-after styles of the moment, particularly at Denham and Seafarer, exclusively at Printemps.

Repossi Samsøe

For winter 2016, soft velvets, pure jersey and satin viscose jostle for prime position. Short kimono jackets worn with cropped trousers complement the look. A selection of winter 2016 designs is available near the denim brands area in Printemps Fashion.

Repossi is one of the oldest Fine Jewellery Houses on the Place Vendome. The product of three generations of craftsmanship, Repossi boasts a legacy rich in tradition and bold, avant-garde design. The pieces are still created in the original workshops that were founded in 1920. This season, Repossi comes to the Printemps department store with an exclusive concession concept. The architectural firm, OMA, has created an unusual suite of furniture and display cabinets. The aim is to offer a new interpretation of the painstaking work of the jewellers by creating a synergy between the displays, the space, the observer and the jewellery.

Swann Hostein

Based in Monaco, Swann Hostein distributes her brand in Japan, Egypt, China, Thailand and Europe. Her creations will go on sale in Printemps Fashion this season.

Carré Y.

Carré Y. is a designer jewellery boutique that opened exclusively in the Printemps department store in spring 2015. The idea for the concept came from Yacine Challal, a jewellery designer and entrepreneur with over 10 years’ experience. Challal offers his own personal, selective and exclusive interpretation of the collections. Carre Y. already offers a selection for women in Printemps Fashion and can now be found in Printemps Men’s in an exclusive pop-up store. www.cpmagazine.net

Beirut is the capital city of Lebanon with a population of approximately 2.1 million people in its metropolitan area. The city is on a relatively small headland jutting into the east Mediterranean. Due to Lebanon's small size the capital has always held the status as the only true cosmopolitan city in the country, and ever since the independence, has been the commercial and financial hub of Lebanon. 20km to its North is Jounieh, a city very closely associated with Beirut.

I was inspired by H.R.H. Princess Haya Bent Al Hussein, the daughter of King Hussein of Jordan. Please introduce yourself to our readers. I am an ambitious, self motivated and satisfied person. I adore my work. I started as a TV presenter with City 7 TV and then moved to Dubai TV, then Al Arabiya TV. I am currently working with my dream channel, Rotana Khalijia, for the Forosia Horse Show. In addition, I have experienced acting with Arab Stars in a comedy series. I am also a professional horse rider. Tell us about your education. I studied Business Administration. What are some of your childhood memories? I always felt older than my age. I remember being a funny child and my mother was always depending on me. I had a feeling I would end up doing something effective in the community. Tell us about your first steps as a horse rider and what made you become professionally involved. I had been going with my family to Al Jawad Horse Club since I was nine years old. I was inspired by H.R.H. Princess Haya Bent Al Hussein, the daughter of King Hussein of Jordan.

What does horse riding mean for you? It means more than I can describe in words. Talk to us about your coaches and tell us which experience shaped you as a horse rider. When I was a beginner, I started practicing with a group. The coach who influenced me the most was Liza (in London), when I was nineteen years old. You have worked with many good horses; tell us about the ones that stand out and why. ‘Shaheen’ is my preferred horse. He stands out because I brought him out. In general though, I love all kinds of horses. How did you begin your career with Rotana? I was at Al Arabiya TV as a TV presenter. Ever since I began with City 7 TV, I had a dream to present a horse program or documentary. I tried to make reports about horses but they did not respond. One day, Rotana Management called me to ask me to present a horse program so I started with Rotana. We would like you to tell us the best and worst moment you have had in the sport. I have had many accidents due to unexpected reactions of the horses, but thankfully without severe injuries. I am enjoying every moment! Did you face any challenges being a female from the Arab world in this sport? In our history there were many female horse riders so I did not face many difficulties. What is the most important element a rider should have in your opinion? Interest in sports, good fitness, patience, confidence, control and above all, passion. Being a horse rider, tweed, field jackets and wellington boots must be a quintessential part of your wardrobe. What are your outdoor fashion essentials? It is a royal sport so I have to wear special fashion during horse championships but on a normal day I can wear normal sporty clothes. Tell us about some of your achievements? I have a horse riding licence, I am hosting the most important horse show program in the Arab world, and I won the best sports program, season two. I am a goodwill ambassador for horsemanship and sports media from UN and TMIPU. What are your future plans? To establish a big horse riding school - plus many things related to horse sport. How can you attract more people to this sport? My program has targeted people throughout the series. What are some of your other hobbies? Sport and writing social articles. Your favourite travel destination? London - because I learned horse riding there. www.cpmagazine.net

What is your daily skincare and make up routine? I do not like extra make up and I do not believe in skincare products. I believe in natural things! Your favourite food? Mandi. The iconic watchmaker joins the world of luxury eyewear

O

MEGA, the iconic Swiss watchmaker, has launched its very first collection of sunglasses for both men and women. In partnership with Marcolin Eyewear in Italy, the products represent the next expansion of the OMEGA universe, where watches and jewellery are already known for exquisite quality and craftsmanship. The first summer collection will be available exclusively in OMEGA boutiques around the world from August 2016. For each pair of sunglasses, OMEGA offers two different sizes, as well as two colour varieties for each model. Inspiration for the sunglasses has been taken from the brand’s heritage and products. This has enabled many aesthetical and technical design details that make each pair unique. Look closely and you will see certain identifiable features such as the flower pattern found in OMEGA jewellery, the iconic claws of the Constellation watch, flexible hinges that resemble a watch crown, the shiny black finish similar to OMEGA’s ceramic Dark Side of the Moon Collection, or metal injected frames inspired by stainless steel. In design, OMEGA retains its legendary sense of detail with sunglasses that are crafted from the very best metal and acetate. All lenses are high-quality and scratch-resistant with an antireflective treatment. The lenses are also engraved with the OMEGA name and logo. This can also be found in several other places including nose pads and facetted temple tips. Amongst the new collection, there is also a Limited Edition model honouring the Rio 2016 Olympic Games where OMEGA will assumed its role as the Official Timekeeper. This pair of classic looking Unisex sunglasses is the only pair that comes in one colour: Matte black with polarised green lenses. Other subtle design details include a keyhole bridge in the shape of the OMEGA logo. Only 2016 pairs have been created, and they will be available during and after the Olympic Games. Finally, each pair of OMEGA sunglasses will be presented in a hard shell case with Zebrawood reminiscent of the interior of OMEGA boutiques. It will include a microfiber pouch as an alternative carry option. www.cpmagazine.net

Fail U.: The False Promise of Higher Education by Charles J. Sykes

The cost of a college degree has increased by 1,125% since 1978-four times the rate of inflation. Total student debt has surpassed $1.3 trillion. Nearly two thirds of all college students must borrow to study, and the average student graduates with more than $30,000 in debt. Many college graduates under twenty-five years old are unemployed or underemployed. And professors (remember them)? rarely teach undergraduates at many major universities, instead handing off their lecture halls to cheaper teaching assistants.

RIVERINE: A Memoir from Anywhere But Here by Angela Palm

Angela Palm grew up in a place not marked on the map, her house set on the banks of a river that had been straightened to make way for farmland. Every year, the Kankakee River in rural Indiana flooded and returned to its old course while the residents sandbagged their homes against the rising water. From her bedroom window, Palm watched the neighbor boy and loved him in secret, imagining a life with him even as she longed for a future that held more than a job at the neighborhood bar. For Palm, caught in this landscape of flood and drought, escape was a continually receding hope.

I'M SUPPOSED TO PROTECT YOU FROM ALL THIS: A MEMOIR by Nadja Spiegelman

A memoir of mothers and daughters and mothers as daughters traced through four generations, from Paris to New York and back again. For a long time, Nadja Spiegelman believed her mother was a fairy. More than her famous father, Maus creator Art Spiegelman, and even more than most mothers, hers French-born New Yorker art director Françoise Mouly exerted a force over reality that was both dazzling and daunting. As Nadja’s body changed and “began to whisper to the adults around me in a language I did not understand,” their relationship grew tense. Unwittingly, they were replaying a drama from her mother’s past, a drama Nadja sensed but had never been told. Then, after college, her mother suddenly opened up to her. Françoise recounted her turbulent adolescence caught between a volatile mother and a playboy father, one of the first plastic surgeons in France. The weight of the difficult stories she told her daughter shifted the balance between them.

Max launches its Eid Collection across all stores in Kuwait Max, the largest value fashion brand in the region, has announced the launch of its latest collection for Eid Al Adha 2016 for men, women and children. Max has brought a sensational new collection that embodies the joyous mood of the festive season and will add a sparkle to the celebration. The new collection is available across all Max stores in Kuwait and features daytime and evening wear with a hint of color and sophistication. The color palate of the fashion line presents a tasteful alternative to the usual black and navy seen during this time of the year, and is beautifully inspired by the 1970s era. For the ladies, the fashion line has adopted a refreshed look to reflect the upcoming season’s color range. The focus is on rich browns, ochres and camel tones to provide warmth to the oversaturation of cool monochromes. The retro theme continues to be the mood for the men’s range of smart casual styling. Classic items such as tailored coats and suits are more on the casual approach, while hoodies and padded gilets are now moving into the space of fashion led territory. This season has a younger relaxed vibe, emphasized by the relaxed silhouettes which have continued to be a trend for the past couple of seasons. The fashion collection for children is also inspired by the same theme; the colors have evolved from sour green and teals to rusted woodland dark hues. The layered looks are created with oversized silhouettes, with 2-piece dressing becoming increasingly relevant and will continue into the spring trends.

Mystical symbols like the third eye or inner eye adorn handbags and clutches in a rich palette of vibrant colours and patterns. Founder and Creative Director Sarah Beydoun adds, “We created a diverse collection of bags, and experimented with new techniques alongside our signature hand embroidery and beading. We expanded our repertoire of woodwork, introducing box clutches with the kaleidoscopic circular pattern of a mandala recreated in pearl and wood inlay, a centuries old technique of embellishing furniture in the Middle East. Our Nirvana bags feature bright splashes of resin paint blended together, while the Aura bags are made of expanding layers of plexi in deep, vibrant colours.” Half the collection features handwork by Sarah’s Bag artisans, including intricate hand embroidery and beading on the psychedelic-patterned Cosmic Bliss bags, and fabric manipulation techniques, like lotus and lattice smocking, to create evening statement pieces like the Mystic bags. Another signature touch in this collection is the Awakening bag which features delicately embroidered eyes looking out with a playful round metal clasp that pivots to reveal a secret mantra: “Seek magic”. Psychedelia brings the magic and the uniqueness of meticulously handcrafted luxury to the forefront, infusing each bag with a human touch, and bringing a vitality to these pieces in a world of mass production and quick gratification.

On World Humanitarian Day, the IKEA Foundation is calling on businesses and foundations to support global and local efforts to help refugee families. US President Obama will host the Summit on the Global Refugee Crisis during the high-level week at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. With more than 65 million people forced to flee their homes, the summit will call for all countries and sections of society to work together to tackle this issue. The IKEA Foundation believes that businesses and foundations have an important role to play in strengthening the global response to refugee crises worldwide. Per Heggenes, CEO of the IKEA Foundation, said: "The corporate sector must come together to support those caught up in one of the biggest displacements of people in history. It’s not just up to governments and aid agencies. Businesses also have a responsibility to respond in their own way. We believe businesses have much more to offer. Their expertise and ability to innovate can help make life better for refugees, and they can use their influence to galvanise others to help." The Foundation supports refugee children and their families around the world through UNHCR and other leading international organisations. On the other hand, the IKEA business makes good use of its creativity and problem-solving skills to find practical ways to help refugees. Together with social enterprise Better Shelter and UNHCR, the Foundation has created a flat-pack shelter, which is safer and more durable than a tent. UNHCR has already ordered thousands of shelters to house refugee families in Greece, Iraq, Serbia, Chad and Djibouti.

Reebok Classics And Kenderick Lamar Celebrate Authentic Creativity With The “Perfect Split”

Eucerin: HYALURONFILLER CC Cream brings color to the successful HyaluronFiller formula for effective anti-aging day care

Since it was first launched in 2008, the Eucerin® HYALURON-FILLER series has become a top seller in pharmacies. Eucerin® is now expanding the line to include the first dermo-cosmetic anti-aging CC cream with light-reflecting color pigments to meet consumer demands for excellent, highly tolerable anti-wrinkle care that also unifies the skin’s complexion.

“Perfect Split” is Reebok Classics’ FW16 classic leather pack, it focuses on embracing the split sides of humans which is reflected within the design of the shoes. The “Perfect Split” pack takes the Classic Leather silhouette and adds understated high-contrast colour blockings. Kendrick Lamar once again continues his partnership with Reebok Classics as the “Perfect Split” pack brings the split sides of his personality to life with the outsole is a hybrid of two of the brand’s rubber soles: the retro gum and contemporary ice.

Complexion correction for a fresh look The Hyaluron-Filler CC Cream combines the dermo-cosmetic skin care expertise of Eucerin® with the trend of BB and CC creams. The trend started in Germany – BB creams were developed to protect the very sensitive skin of patients after an operation. When the creams reached the Asian market, people started using them as beauty product because they offered a natural but improved complexion. CC creams focus on the same aspect – they correct the complexion (“CC”) for a unified and even look. The new Eucerin® Hyaluron-Filler CC Cream allows the consumer to benefit from this effect – and offers even more. The formula with hyaluronic acid plumps up even the deepest wrinkles from inside out and the color pigments unify the complexion, helping to significantly reduce the visible signs of aging. Because the formula includes both high and low molecular hyaluronic acid, the skin is cared for from the inside and outside. The cream provides moisture, and wrinkles and fine lines are “plumped up” from the inside. In addition, glycine saponin stimulates the skin’s own production of hyaluronic acid in the cells of the dermal skin layers – and works right where the deepest wrinkles originate. The color pigments melt on the skin and provide it with a smooth and unified complexion. The cream does not accumulate in wrinkles or fine lines, so they are not unnecessarily accentuated. To protect the skin from sunlight-induced aging, the Hyaluron-Filler CC Cream contains SPF 15.

Landmark Group Expansion in Kuwait continues with the Opening of 10th Centrepoint store and 1st “Yours London” Swatch Sistem51 store in Khaitan Irony - Join The Mechanical Revolution

The 2017 IKEA Catalogue is full of new and well-designed home furnishing products to inspire and make your home life more beautiful. This year’s catalogue encourages us all to let go of big expectations in and around the kitchen. It’s about throwing out the rules and recipes and following your own path.

Our meals have migrated – from the dining table to the sofa, floor and desk. These days, a meal with friends or family doesn’t have to happen around a perfectly set table. And it doesn’t even have to include chairs. The days of “have to” are over. Go ahead and eat around a coffee table. Sit on the sofa. Or the floor. Because it doesn’t really matter where we eat – just that we are together. For the first time ever, the IKEA catalogue features 13 stories, taking the reader on a journey to homes around the world. The purpose is to show inspiring examples of how IKEA connects to different people in different cultures and how understanding their needs and dreams help us design and make better products and solutions. IKEA designs for people. That is why this year’s catalogue cover says “Designed for people, not consumers”. By this we mean making products and solutions with someone in mind, not just things without a purpose. The 2017 IKEA Catalogue, distributed to over 420,000 homes in Kuwait, spans over 324 pages and will be printed in 211,000,000 FSC certified copies, translated into 34 languages and distributed in 49 countries. In addition to the printed catalogue, this year we have a totally redesigned and really inspiring IKEA Catalogue app that is available for smartphones, tablets, desktops, laptops and last but not least – the latest generation of Apple TV. With its digital catalogue it offers more than 3 hours of moving and interactive content, like easy to navigate guide films and co-workers sharing tips and ideas. With its virtual reality 360 degree room views and augmented reality feature you can virtually try out IKEA products in your home.

Swatch SISTEM51 goes metal. Stemming from its roots as the automatic watch for everyone, the new SISTEM51 IRONY is the automatic watch for those who value clean, classic design, blended with contemporary Swatch style. The difference between SISTEM51 and SISTEM51 IRONY is … Metal—lots of it. SISTEM51 IRONY uses high performance and robust metals to introduce Swatch lovers and those new to the brand to a sophisticated vision of Swatch automatic watch design. Built for the boardroom, exhibition or weekend adventure, the new SISTEM51 IRONY is fit with the same single central screw, 90-hour power reserve, 17 pending patents and impressively low 51 total components as all SISTEM51 models, but with a more evolved look and feel. Each SISTEM51 IRONY design is a piece of art that says “premium” without the price tag. By taking advantage of the first fully-automated mechanical watch manufacturing process, each elegant model is assembled to the highest level of precision and Swiss quality, whilst delivering unmatched value. Housed in 316L stainless steel watch cases and adorned with the finest dial finishing techniques, each model in the SISTEM51 IRONY collection is unequivocally handsome from the front, but turn one over, and that’s where its true magic is revealed. The openwork caseback design gives wearers a secret window to view the central screw, automatic rotor, oscillating balance wheel, as well as the rest of the 51 stylishly printed parts driving the self-winding, battery-free timepiece. For Swatch, SISTEM51 IRONY is a big step towards affordable, timeless automatic watches. Composed of seven exquisite models, Swatch moves upscale with rubber instead of silicone bands; superluminova index applications instead of print; fine, padded leather bands and metal. Lots of metal. The look is decidedly mature without being posh, while the contemporary openwork speaks to Swatch’s roots in creative design. For Swatch, SISTEM51 IRONY is “Swatch” at its core, but open to the status of luxury.
