ou’ve gone through a rough time, experienced a huge set back; some curve ball that was thrown at you in your recent past and you are struggling to overcome it. Until then you had some ups and downs, some mediocre moments and were chugging along life’s pathway and then, from nowhere, you got stumped. Does this type of scenario ring any bells for you? So many things can throw us off our game; sudden tragedies and external forces that we have no control over; occurrences that seem to have such a grip on us that we can’t move beyond them. And perhaps the only way you know to cope is to look for the nearest hole to hide in or to bury yourself under other distractions. Here is statistical data showing the top 15 most stressful life occurrences. If you have experienced 1 or some of these, have you coped in a way that aids your wellbeing or in a manner that has left you unwell? Here are some tips that will aid your recovery and direct you towards picking yourself up. 1.Find and surround yourself with people who truly support you empathically, meaningfully and in a way that makes you feel held. If that person doesn’t exist in your family and friends circle, consider seeking out support groups or professionals you can speak to. 2.Regardless of the trauma, there are always tiny blessings given to you

in the chaos. Seek those out as they offer you little lights of hope and reassure you of the many ways you are still blessed. 3.Label your emotion by giving it a name. In doing so, Dr. Matthew Lieberman (Neuroscientist) says that this simple trick helps the mind refocus by reducing activity in the emotional brain. 4.We choose our narratives that either heal us or inflict self-harm, by choosing to see the sorry side of life and how disadvantaged we are. You inflict negativity on yourself by self-loathing, but if you see the same circumstances as they are with new lenses, the opportunities they bring, the gifts they left you and the possibilities that await, you open yourself up to overcoming and moving beyond that deep pain. 5.Allow yourself quiet moments where you can reflect on the pain, the despair and loneliness. Feel it and embrace it. Face it, because pretending it isn’t there doesn’t serve you. Sitting with it, however, allows you to feel it in its totality as you prepare to resurface from that pain, a little more renewed, accepting and positively seeking. Remember that adversity is part and parcel of the peak moments in our lives. It is normal, undeniable, heart wrenching but, most importantly of all, ‘overcomeable’. Without pain, we cannot delight fully and wholeheartedly in Joy.

MOM SELF-CARE

A

s this year’s Mother’s Day gets closer, it’s time for all mothers to consider giving themselves a gift on this occasion for a change! By now, you can admit that being a mom is probably one of the hardest (thankless?) jobs you have ever signed up for. We get paid in wet-smooches from our little ones, a hug or two as they get older and sometimes a pat on the shoulder from our too-cool teenagers if we are lucky. Despite all the hard work, moms love their kids and love their jobs. But with motherhood comes another feeling, a gnawing sensation that can eat you up inside called guilt. Guilt comes hand in hand with being a mom. Ask any mother out there from any ethnicity, colour or religion and I bet she has at least one thing she feels guilty about. While we all differ on what we feel guilty about, all moms feel guilty when practicing self-care. In fact, mom-self-care can be a novelty to the majority of mothers and at the bottom of any mom-to-do list. We put our kids, spouses, jobs, house-work and pretty much everything else first, but never ourslelves. But what happens when you put everyone else first? You end up running on empty. You end up being cranky, exhausted, tired and simply depleted of all energy. Meaning you can’t give to your family. This Mother’s Day, make a new pact; a promise to yourself that you will make an effort to practice self-care. This will be your gift to your self that keeps on giving. How? Selfcare allows you to nourish your body, mind and soul, making you a happier person, a better partner and a calmer mother. It's a win-win situation! Self-care does not have to be a six-hour spa day (it could be though!). Practicing selfcare can be simply taking thirty minutes daily to curl up with a good book and a cup of tea. Not sure where to start? Here is a list to help you: 1. Begin with the intention that you will allow yourself to take care of YOU! 2. Take a look at your schedule and de-clutter the things that eat up most of your time yet give you the least reward. 3. Cut out negative people from your life. The best place to start? Your social media feed! 4. Schedule your sleep! I know this might sound boring to some but let’s admit it. We wake up very early and most mothers - whether stay at home or working moms - are on the go the whole day. Making sure you get 7 hours of sleep is one of the first steps to taking care of yourself. 5. Stay connected! Call your friends, have a girl’s night out, schedule a date night with your husband or a leisurely breakfast with your best friend! Do not neglect your relationships especially those you hold dear. Fostering positive and happy relationships gives you a sense of belonging in the community and a great sense of love. Keep those connections strong. 6. Start a journal! Journaling could be a great way to clear your thoughts or being a creative outlet. Journaling helps calm your brain allowing you to take care of your mind and soul. 7. Make time to move but move in a way that makes you happy! Walk outdoors, sign up for a 5K race, practice yoga or Pilates, or even dance to your favourite songs! It does not matter how you move as long as you are enjoying it! 8. Remember that self-care does not have to be expensive, hard or tiring. Also self-care does not look the same to everyone. What one mom finds fun and relaxing, another mom might find depleting! Find what works for you and keep doing it! While you’re taking care of yourself, remember to be kind, be patient, be generous, be loving and be accepting. Be all of these things to yourself first before you can be these things to others. Happy Mother’s Day to all of you AWESOME moms!!

TATTOO TABOO Gill Sherry

L

ove them or hate them, there’s no denying that tattoos are here to stay – literally. I often wonder if people realise the lifelong implications when they succumb to the artist’s needle. Tattoos have long since been a statement worn proudly on the arms of men; a badge of honour, so to speak. More recently, however, fashion seems to have persuaded more and more women to join the body art craze, decorating their bodies with symbols, names or illustrations. Traditionally, in the UK at least, tattoos were always associated with sailors. Later, they became popular among criminals, some of them choosing to carry out their own, amateur body art. In modern times, however, tattoos appear to have no social boundaries and are accepted by most as a popular lifestyle choice. The trend is particularly evident when it comes to professional footballers, some having complete ‘sleeves’ on their arms and elaborate designs on the back of their neck. David Beckham is believed to have over forty tattoos, including ‘VII’ to represent the number seven shirt worn at Manchester United, and the words ‘Forever by your side’ alongside an image of his wife, Victoria. Although still frowned upon in the Middle East, tattoos are all too evident in this part of the world. Gyms are full of bicep body art and Beach Clubs boast an array of back, chest and leg tattoos. Usually, it’s men who display their tattoos of choice, but women are also known to flaunt their fancy ink work. I must admit, it’s this that I struggle with. It may seem like a good idea to follow fashion and join the body art craze but what happens in ten, twenty, even thirty year’s time? Will you still be proud of that dolphin on your shoulder, that love heart on your arm or that barbed wire around your ankle? Or worse still, what will you think when forced to wear your ex-boyfriend’s name as a permanent stamp at the base of your spine? Because that’s the other thing about tattoos; what’s the point of having them where you can’t even see them? I would never judge someone for their own personal lifestyle choices but I do sometimes question the reasoning behind certain decisions. When it comes to tattoos, I’m definitely in the ‘not for me’ camp but that doesn’t necessarily mean I disapprove of other people having them. What I don’t understand, is why people are prepared to pay enormous sums of money to permanently mark their skin with a design they can’t even see. Some choose to have tattoos on the sole of their foot; others on the back of their neck; and many, on their shoulder blade. I struggle to understand the logic of decorating your skin solely for the benefit of others. 18

MARCH 2018

A friend of mine, in her twenties, thought it a good idea to have a tattoo on her arm. She opted for a tasteful design of a butterfly, considering it both attractive to look at and a symbol of freedom. Eight years later when choosing the gown for her wedding, she broke down and cried at the ‘eyesore’ on her arm. She didn’t want to wear a wedding gown with long sleeves; neither did she want her tattoo on display on her wedding day. A perfect example of how our tastes and opinions can change. Cheryl Cole (or Tweedy, or Fernandez-Versini, or Payne, or whatever name she’s calling herself these days) is another example of regretful body art. The enormous tattoo covering her lower back and her entire derrière hit the headlines in August 2013. Apparently the elaborate artwork was necessary in order to hide a previous tattoo that she was no longer enamored to. Obviously the former Girls Aloud star and X-Factor judge misunderstood the meaning of ‘permanent’. Of course, she could argue that she actually likes the oversized red roses on her posterior. After all, at thirty-four (and undeniably beautiful) she can get away with it. But what about when she’s sixty-four? I doubt the blot on her features will be viewed so sympathetically then. It’s important to remember that tattoos are no different to hairstyles, makeup trends and clothing fads; even home interiors and music choices. They change with time. You’ve only got to look back at old photographs to realise how much your preferences shift. What you thought looked good ten years ago may look completely ridiculous now. The difference is, you can change your hairstyle without a second thought. You can update your wardrobe and dispose of those unwanted, old fashioned clothes any time you like. A tattoo, on the other hand, you’re stuck with. Something to remember before entering the tattooist’s den. And let’s not forget the health risks. Kuwait has good reason for discouraging tattoos. There are horror stories aplenty when it comes to unlicensed tattoo parlors, unsterilized tools, blood poisoning and allergic reactions. Not forgetting the pain! Evidently, those determined to decorate their skin with their illustration of choice are unfazed by these factors and go ahead with the procedure anyway – often at great financial cost. Clearly, tattoos are favoured by many and the craze looks set to continue. Those without a tattoo parlor in their home country will continue to travel to satisfy their body art desire. For them, it’s a form of self-expression; a lifestyle choice which should not be denied. For others it’s considered at best, a transgression and at worst, a sin. For those still undecided, there’s always henna!

LOATHSOME LODGERS

I

’ve always considered myself quite a sociable being. Never one to turn down an invitation, I’m at my best when mixing and mingling, surrounding by likeminded fun seeking souls. So when the opportunity came along for a house share, I was more than happy to agree. Living alone is not ideal, particularly when there’s a hefty rent to pay. As the moving-in date drew closer, I began to look forward to nights out with my new house mate; shared meals and new adventures. I took pleasure in preparing her room, emptying drawers and stocking shelves. Yes, this was going to be fun! It didn’t take long, however, to realise that perhaps this wasn’t such a good idea. Previously, I had no-one to worry about but myself. I had a routine and a way of doing things that suited me just fine. Suddenly, someone else was in my space, disrupting my routine and unsettling my balance. The TV remote was no longer my own, the washing machine was never free when I wanted to use it, the kitchen was full of alien smells and the fridge divided into two very different halves. After two months, I’d given up on any thoughts of bonding with my house mate. My offers to cook for us both had been met with ‘Thanks, but no thanks’, my suggestions of nights out or trips to the cinema had received the same response, and as for a night in front of the TV, forget it – her entertainment of choice was clearly very different to mine. The sad thing is, we were friends before she moved in. I hadn’t picked some random stranger to share my 20

MARCH 2018

home, I’d chosen someone I’d known for a long time. Unfortunately, rather than cementing our friendship, our house share experience had forced a wedge right down the middle. Eventually, the situation grew intolerable. Even the tiniest little things began to irritate me. She would adjust the control on the toaster resulting in a smoke filled kitchen every time I used it. She would leave the windows open when she left house, both a climate and a security issue. She invited friends around without asking, slammed doors in the middle of the night and played music too loud. After nine months, I asked her to leave. I don’t think either of us was particularly disappointed. It was certainly a learning curve and I was forced to admit that maybe I’m not the most tolerant of individuals. My personality is also quite controlling so, with the benefit of hindsight, a house share was probably not the most sensible idea. Whilst it was a bonus being able to share the rent, the awkwardness that came with it simply wasn’t worth it. It’s important to feel comfortable in your own house; to be able to relax and unwind and come and go as you please. It got to the point where I didn’t want to go home. So, I won’t be planning another house share in a hurry. It’s possible I just chose the wrong lodger but more likely, I just didn’t like sharing my own space. It’s quite obvious when you think about it. You don’t commit to a life-long partner before giving serious thought to whether or not you’re going to get along. Choosing a lodger should be no different.

AlZainah Al-Babtain “Being ordinary doesn't interest me” Please introduce yourself to our readers. My name is Alzainah Albabtain, I’m 28 years old and a mother of two. I turned my passion and love for organic home gardening and cooking into a popular insta-blog (@itallgrows) where I share my experiences and tips, and also a successful growing online business (www.plantnmore.com) which I created to help new gardeners find the best products and materials to use in the garden and kitchen. Tell us about your education. I studied Visual Communications at the Gulf University of Science and Technology. My major has greatly helped me in conveying my message through social media. I use the skills learned in storytelling to create videos and photography to help my viewers better understand the methods I use in my garden. Tell us about your career journey. When first starting to learn about gardening, one can get quite confused (as I was in 2008). A beginner can spend so much money buying incorrect garden products they don't need. As a beginner myself, I was never satisfied with the products or guidance I found at the local garden stores; the idea of organic gardening and organic solutions was, and still is, not catered for on their shelves. The seeds provided in the stores were the same seeds each and every year. I wanted something more. Also, as a young girl, I found it uncomfortable to shop there and to ask the employees about things they didn't even know. For example, I hated that they always recommended poisonous insecticides to spray on my vegetables. I thought it would be great if the stores could rid us of the hassle and confusion and provide only the best organic gardening products for us to shop for online. As the years passed by, my Instagram account @ itallgrows was gaining popularity. More and more people were aware of the benefits of organic gardening but it was always an expensive hunt to find organic seeds, soil and fertilizers. The organic gardening trend did not catch on in the stores and the online retail store I had hoped for still did not exist. At that time, I had a 9-3 job in advertising and social media management and always felt like I could do more. This is when I decided to create the solution I was waiting for someone else to provide. I decided to create www.plantnmore.com, an online retail store which provides only the best products which I love and recommend. I want my customers to have a stress/confusion-free experience. With the help of my husband/business partner, I turned my love and passion for a hobby into an actual business. The web store’s success has given me a chance to provide garden and kitchen products which I love. Instead of just recommending products I like to my friends and family, I can now provide them at a reasonable price to everyone. It’s really a joy getting feedback from customers and hearing about the success they have using our products. This is what keeps me going and pushes me to work harder. How do you manage your time? Describe your average day. Being your own boss is not always the easiest thing. Sometimes being caught up with taking care of my

24

MARCH 2018

kids as well as running errands and working in the garden leaves me with little time to focus. This is why I decided it would be best to create obligatory office hours which I dedicate to the tasks I must take care of; whether it’s managing and creating content for my Instagram page, fulfilling the web store’s orders and its customer care, negotiating and researching and acquiring new products or designing and evolving the website. What is your biggest strength? My love for ingenuity is a strength I possess. I love doing something different and being different. I always want to create and be a part of something unique. Being ordinary doesn't interest me. Furthermore, I'm willing and able to self learn skills to help me get to my goals. Do you have any weaknesses? I definitely need help with the business and finance side of running the web store. This is where my partner comes in. I also think my biggest weakness is time management and leaving unfinished tasks unmet. I have so much going on at all times. Have you made any mistakes that have made you stronger? Yes. I sometimes post videos that go viral on WhatsApp or social media. I once created a post to promote a product I had worked very hard on and was very passionate about, which was the Spice Pen. It allows you to write on your food using spices. The mistake I made was that I posted the video without adding a watermark or label. The video went viral in the GCC and spread like wildfire. I had no control over it. The product was quickly copied in China and a cheap copy was being sold in every country in the GCC. And guess which video they were using to promote their knock-offs? Mine. Sales of the original product went down and I was robbed of my hard work but there was nothing I could do about it. What have been the biggest challenges you’ve faced during your career? Getting gardening products into the country is very difficult even with all the correct paperwork available. Also, we try our best to bring prices down for our customers, but sometimes shipping costs and delivery costs are higher than we would like them to be. How do you stay motivated during challenging times? I go through the testimonials and photos that my customers send me, saying how our products and guidance has made it easy for them to embark on their gardening journey successfully, and how practicing this beautiful hobby has affected their lives. Seeing what a difference we’ve made and how we’re creating awareness about healthy living is always motivating for me. What do you do to relax? I definitely find working in the garden calming, relaxing and even therapeutic. Working in the garden is scientifically proven to reduce stress hormones.

What has been your proudest moment so far? I feel proud for introducing gardening into peoples’ homes. It’s being able to see the positive change in my followers’ lives. I receive a lot of messages from sons and daughters saying my introduction of gardening into their homes has helped their elder moms get out of the house and has added peaceful joy into their everyday lives. I also receive messages from people saying gardening has helped them shake off their depression and live life more positively. I feel proud of spreading this message and lifestyle. What is your biggest fear? Not being able to fulfill my goals. What is your favourite quote? To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow. Name one item in life you can’t do without? My iMac. What’s the best advice you have ever taken? People don't care about your business. They care about their problems. Be the solution that they're looking for. Share three books on your nightstand. I have none. In your opinion, what are the three keys to success? Planning – Courage – Commitment What is next for you? What would you still like to achieve? I want to fine tune and improve my still very young website. I want to expand our product lines with more new and exciting products that serve our health conscious and educated audience. I want to better the service we provide to have a happier customer. What advice would you give to young women starting out in their career? Don’t start a business thinking how much money it can make. Search for a problem and work on a solution to fix it. Research, practice and evolve; and certainly don't hurry and rush into opening for business until you’re ready. All businesses start small so don’t belittle your ideas and capabilities. How does it feel to be a CP Woman of Substance? I feel honored and blessed. Your message for the team at CP magazine: Thank you for your recognition and encouragement.

Share three books on your nightstand. The Power Of Now, Who Says You Can’t? You Do, Siblings Without Rivalry In your opinion, what are the three keys to success? First of all, you need to be clear on what it is you want and understand why it is important to you. Second of all, you need to isolate your mind and protect your motivation so that no-one can pull you down with their negative energy. Third of all, is perseverance. I cannot emphasize this point enough because unless you choose to persevere you will not get over any obstacle. Failure is not in falling down or making mistakes, it’s in staying down, refusing to try again or to learn from your experience. What is next for you? What would you still like to achieve? I’m in the process of expanding my current business and pivoting it in a way that better serves young girls. I am also on my way to become a certified life coach so that I can help girls and women around me. I would like to become more active in the local political field and participate in more women’s empowerment campaigns. What advice would you give to young women starting out in their career? Opportunities don’t happen, you create them. You create them with the persistent determination to remain dedicated to the excellence you believe in. Do not let anyone set ceilings for you, they were made to be shattered. Do not let anyone make you feel like your gender is a disability. Of all the things that have changed the way I work, remember this: work to make yourself proud, not to receive recognition; because if it doesn’t bring you joy, you’re doing it wrong.

Hanan Al-Habeeb “It’s never too late to start over again..”

Please introduce yourself to our readers. I am Hanan Alhabeeb, 33 years old, an international certified trainer and member in many centers such as Canada Global Centre for Consulting and Training, Innovation Dome for Consulting and Training in Jordan, Kuwait Trainer Academy and World Trainers Club. I’m also a certified trainer in VI Markets Company in Kuwait. Tell us about your education. After leaving senior high school in 2002, I continued my studies in the TNI (Telecommunication and Navigation Institute) majoring in electronic engineering (2007). I also have a university degree in Business Management (2016) from Applied Science University. Tell us about your career journey. I worked in the Commercial Bank of Kuwait since 2007, reaching the position of Acting Branch Manager. However, in 2015, I suffered a health issue (incorrect eye surgery) so I was outside of Kuwait (in Spain) for almost a year. That was the transformation point in my life. Even with the corrective surgery in Spain, my vision was not perfect enough for my banking career so I decided to quit and start over again somewhere else. But back then I didn’t know what I wanted to do, so I took many courses in different subjects to develop myself. Suddenly, during one of the training courses, I saw myself as a couch, so I took the TOT (Training of Trainers) course to be a professional certified trainer. From there, I saw my career path and knew exactly what I was good at and what I was passionate about. I registered for the initiative of the Ministry of State for Youth Affairs and was selected from the one hundred Kuwaitis who were chosen. That was the start of my career as a certified trainer. How do you manage your time? Describe your average day. I usually start my day at 8am when I sit down and plan the day. I jot down the tasks I have to complete and prioritize them depending on their urgency and importance. I check my emails and calendar and try to make plans such as meeting or training courses, reviewing the status of the projects that I’m currently working on. I try to finish any pending work, so I can increase my pace and can be more productive throughout the day. What is your biggest strength? I’m ambitious and proactive. I have always set myself goals and it motivates me to work hard. I have achieved my goals so far with my training, education and work experience. When I think about 34

things, I do them, and I’m always looking for ways to improve myself and to grow.

Name one item in life you can’t do without? My smart phone

Do you have any weaknesses? I have two great weaknesses. The first is my inability to share responsibilities. The second is my delegation skills. I am always so concerned about everything being done right and on time that I can get stuck in the mentality of ‘If you want it done right, do it yourself’. Unfortunately, that’s not always possible and I’ve realized that I can slow things down if I am too controlling.

What’s the best advice you have ever taken? It’s never too late to start over again, it’s always too late to wait.

Have you made any mistakes that have made you stronger? Yes, my decision to have eye surgery was my biggest mistake ever. Because of it I became a different person who thinks a lot and does excessive research before making any decisions. What have been the biggest challenges you’ve faced during your career? When the management of the bank gave me a new position as an officer with huge responsibility and authorization (despite my young age and my few years of experience). It was the biggest challenge I had ever faced because of the risk of the position and the responsibility of the staff under me. How do you stay motivated during challenging times? By accepting the situation as it is rather than fighting or resisting it. Also, taking responsibility by focusing on what I can control rather than what I cannot. This lets me appreciate myself more and gives me the power to continue. What do you do to relax? Some may find it strange, but mostly when I’m nervous I play puzzle games or solve crime cases on my tablet. Sometimes I just take a walk with Marcus (my dog). What has been your proudest moment so far? My proudest moments ever are when I receive feedback or comments from the people I have trained saying how I touched their lives by changing their path or vision. This always gives me the power and resoluteness to continue what I do. What is your biggest fear? To lose the people I love. What is your favourite quote? Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don’t.

Share three books on your nightstand. Da Vinci Code (Dan Brown) Training The Best Dog Ever (Larry Kay) Bringing Out The Best In People (Aubrey C. Daniels) In your opinion, what are the three keys to success? - Surround yourself with the right people - Make yourself as useful as possible - Believe you can reach your goals What is next for you? What would you still like to achieve? Let me start by saying that I’m really passionate about what I do. It is great to mentor others and touch their lives. In the future, I see myself as the owner of a training and consulting center, arranging social events for society and non-profit programs for students and disabled people. Now it’s a goal but I hope, in the future, it will become a reality. What advice would you give to young women starting out in their career? Be yourself and love what you do. Challenge yourself and enjoying the challenge. Take opportunities even if you feel you are not ready, even if it scares you. Some of the best advice I ever received was ‘fake it until you make it’. Do not over-prepare, over-think or over-analyze every opportunity otherwise it will be gone. Sometimes the best way to learn and get the experience is to just jump in and do it and soon your career will become a part of you. How does it feel to be a CP Woman of Substance? I was surprised, flattered and excited. It was a pleasure that CP Magazine selected me as one of the inspiring women for this year. I feel honored and really appreciate the confidence you have shown in me. Your message for the team at CP magazine: Thank you for including my name in your magazine. Lutfiye Kumlu “I try not to worry about things I cannot control”

Please introduce yourself to our readers. My name is Lutfiye Kumlu. I am TurkishAustralian and a mother of two boys (a six and a two year old). I grew up in Adana, a city in southern Turkey, which is where my parents still live. I went to university in Ankara and moved to the UK afterwards. After a brief period in London, I married and moved to Australia with my husband. We lived in Australia for a few years and had our first child there. During my time in Australia, I worked as a volunteer in various community organizations and schools. About four years ago, we moved to Kuwait for my husband’s work. I enjoy spending time with family and friends and travelling whenever I can. Tell us about your education. I have a chemistry degree from Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey. Tell us about your career journey. In my first job, I worked as a laboratory technician in one of the private schools in Sydney. However, I always planned to do something on my own but was not sure what I wanted. After moving to Kuwait, I briefly taught Turkish at Kuwait University but had to leave for personal reasons. Soon after we moved to Kuwait I met my current business partner, a likeminded person with great entrepreneur instincts. Deniz is one of the first friends I made in Kuwait and we have a lot in common. Deniz and I started an event company and also private Turkish language classes and private tutoring. We organized our first large event, Mommy and Me Market, in 2015. This year, we are organizing the second version of the Mommy and Me Market. How do you manage your time? Describe your average day. I wake up around 6am every day. The first thing I do is drink coffee, then have light breakfast. After breakfast I go to the gym and then to the office to start my busy day. I have meetings both in and out of the office during the day. At lunch time I pick up my son from the school bus and spend some time with him while we have lunch together. Sometimes I go back to the office, sometimes I work from home; it depends on my commitments for the day. What is your biggest strength? My biggest strength is being well-organized. Sandi Ismail “A strong woman is one who builds other women up, not tears them down” Please introduce yourself to our readers. I’m a radio personality, a yoga enthusiast and an advocate for women’s rights and spreading awareness on mental health. I’m also the mama of three fur babies - Siggy, Scully and Sage!

Have you made any mistakes that have made you stronger? All mistakes make us stronger one way or another. I’m grateful for all the ones I’ve made in the form of people and situations. My mistakes have taught me to be more resilient.

I was a major bookworm as a child so, after obtaining my A-Levels from high school, it seemed like a natural decision to study English Literature, which I earned from Kuwait University. While at university, I was introduced to my favourite literary subgenres: feminist and postcolonial literature by Dr Hanan Muzaffar and Dr Mai Al-Nakib, respectively.

Finally, I took the leap into full time entrepreneurship and started Smyrna Blue: Events & More and co-founded Learn Turkish Kuwait. How do you manage your time? Describe your average day. My daily planner, along with my Google calendar, is my magical wand. Usually I start my day with a workout and meditation session in the gym which keeps me energized for the rest of the day. Most of my day is booked with meetings, classes and trainings. Occasionally, I am lucky to find an opportunity for a quick lunch or coffee with my friends or husband which is a great refresher during a hectic day. What is your biggest strength? I have two key strengths - time management and my deep passion for developing new projects and watching my ideas become reality. Do you have any weaknesses? Have you made any mistakes that have made you stronger? Entrepreneurship is like a rose garden, there are many beautiful moments but the path is filled with thorns. Along the way there are many ups and downs that can inspire you and motivate you if you have the right mindset. What have been the biggest challenges you’ve faced during your career? Finding the right people to work with has been one of the biggest challenges for me. The synergy you create with the people you work with is one of the key elements of success. I feel so lucky to have Lutfiye as my partner. The chemistry we have and the energy we create together is one of the reasons I am so excited to start each day! Unfortunately, she will be moving to another country at the end of June. So, I will be flying solo until I cross paths with another co-pilot. But I work best as a team, so I hope my next business partner won’t take too long to find! How do you stay motivated during challenging times? I listen to and read inspirational and awesome people such as Marie Forleo, Sheryl Sandberg, Ariana Huffington, Tony Robbins and Oprah. They help me see things from a different perspective and remind me of what entrepreneurship is all about. You have to stay focused on your goals and take each challenge as it comes. What do you do to relax? I start the day with a brisk workout at the gym and meditate using the Headspace app. I explore new places with my friends and of course enjoy the beach with my boys, especially on Friday mornings. What has been your proudest moment so far? I can’t choose one moment, there are so many to be proud of. A few that come to mind would be co-founding Learn Turkish Kuwait and Mommy & Me Market. What makes me proud is seeing our students go from a simple ‘Merhaba’ to being able to have a genuine conversation in Turkish. I am also proud when mothers and children come together at Mommy & Me Market, an event that gathers the newest and best products, services and organizations related to motherhood and family life under one roof. To share the happiness and satisfaction of those mothers and kids is priceless.

What is your biggest fear? Losing my curiosity, passion and drive for growth. What is your favourite quote? When your soul is singing in joy, then you know you are doing it right. Name one item in life you can’t do without? My day planner. What’s the best advice you have ever taken? Follow your passion! Create the business and life you love. Be ethical in everything you do. Share three books on your nightstand. Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg, Cosmos by Carl Sagan, and The Prophet by Khalil Gibran. In your opinion, what are the three keys to success? Persistence, loving what you do, taking smart risks. What is next for you? What would you still like to achieve? I am focused on continuing to develop and grow my existing businesses. Every day is a new opportunity to reinvent, rediscover and re-energize. Looking forward, I have a few interesting ideas that I can’t wait to get started on. For example, I recently setup The Professional Women Network of Kuwait and my goal is to bring all the businesswomen in Kuwait together to empower and support each other with monthly growth and development sessions. What advice would you give to young women starting out in their career? Most important of all is to know yourself. Know your own strengths and weaknesses; what motivates you and what you are willing and happy to sacrifice your time and energy for. Stay positive and accept constructive criticism. Be honest and realistic with yourself and remember that having strong support from friends and family is priceless. How does it feel to be a CP Woman of Substance? It feels incredible to be recognized for doing what I love. It is yet another unforgettable milestone along the winding journey of entrepreneurship. Your message for the team at CP magazine: Thank you for supporting and recognizing the work done by the entrepreneur community. WOMEN’S HEALTH

BUILDING HABITS FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

D

eveloping a healthy lifestyle doesn’t need to be hard, daunting or rocket science. The key to developing a healthy lifestyle and being able to stick to it is to build healthy habits first, practice them, and then, when you are ready, take the next step and build on them. Having goals set and in place is fantastic, but you need the stepping stones, tools and habits to help you become more successful at achieving them. Creating habits will ensure that you are moving in the right direction. In this article I will outline healthy lifestyle habits that can lead you to better body composition and also feel good throughout the day and night. Once you have identified brand new healthy habits it takes a little practice, consistency and patience. I recommend picking 1-2 habits every 1-2 weeks and practice them. Soon enough, they become second nature and as easy and automatic as putting your clothes on in the morning or brushing your teeth. Start with something that’s easy for you to get good at. Then, when you feel comfortable and the habits are part of your daily routine, pick a new habit - something fun!

1.Pick an exercise you enjoy doing. Exercise has many benefits including improving your mood, losing body fat and helping prevent many health conditions including obesity and diabetes. I recommend that you do something that you will enjoy, whether it’s by yourself, with a trainer, with a friend or in a group whatever is going to motivate you. The options are endless. Examples include walking, joining a boot camp or running club, cycling, swimming, Pilates and yoga. As long as you are exercising or moving daily, it’s much better than doing nothing at all. Exercise, along with boosting your mood, can alleviate stress in your daily life.

2. Decrease stress. Take a look at your primary stressor in life and look at ways to decrease negative stress and increase positive stress in your life. Create a healthy habit to counteract stress. For me, it’s exercising daily. Physical stress in the form of exercise is very beneficial for both mind and body. 48

MARCH 2018

Exercise helps us maintain our metabolic rate, helping us stay in shape, clear our thoughts and decrease the risk of many metabolic diseases. Benefits of participating in regular low impact exercises such as walking, jogging, tai chi, yoga, swimming and cycling will not only do your adrenal system a favour, you'll also be burning calories at the necessary rate to utilize more fatty acid oxidation, which will help you towards your body shape goals as well. There are many ways to decrease stress with both exercise and nutrition. Increasing your daily water intake is one of the simplest things you can do to help bring your body back to homeostasis (balance).

3.Take a look at your nutrition. Ask yourself these questions. If you answer ‘no’ to any of them, take one week at a time to develop these healthy habits. 1) Are you eating slowly? Check in with hunger. Sit down, relax and take your time. 15-20 minutes for a meal is about right. Make sure you stop eating when you’re about 80% full. 2) Where is the protein dense food? Are you about to eat at least 1 palm size portion of protein dense food? Women get 1 palm-sized portion and men get 2 palm-sized portions. 3) Where are the veggies? Are you about to eat a large portion of vegetables? They can be prepared any way you like. One serving is about 1 fist-sized portion and you should try to eat a few portions per meal. 4) Where are the carbs? If you have fat to lose but haven’t just worked out, eat less pasta, bread, rice and other starchy carbs. Opt for a double serving of veggies instead. If you have just worked out, a mix of carb sources is fine.

5) Where are your fats coming from? You need some fats from various foods, prioritizing whole food sources like eggs, meats, fish, olives, nuts and seeds. Spread these throughout the day. 6) Are you drinking water? Drink 1-2 glasses of water 15-30 minutes before each meal and sip from your water bottle every 30 minutes throughout the day. Aim for at least 8 glasses daily. Practicing daily habits doesn’t make ‘perfect’ straight away but it does make progress in a positive direction towards your goals. Remember that everyone has his or her own starting point on their own journey with their own destination. Starting is the first step and then making sure that you are progressing even one percent more every day is a small win. Celebrate your small successes along the way. Start small and build every week on your daily routine and soon you will achieve your goals by building healthy habits within your lifestyle. Photo: Here I am in Petra, Jordan, at the top of the mountain near the Monastery, building on my daily habits of exercising and doing what I love - hiking in nature and celebrating my success by making it to the top! www.cpmagazine.net

INTO THE WILD

A

n African safari truly is a sobering experience. Coming within metres of the world´s biggest, often most dangerous animals and witnessing them in their natural, undisturbed environment is frightening, surprising and heart-warming all at once. This month we travel to South Africa, Zambia, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania - five destinations where you can connect with wild animals. Check in to one of these hotels where wild animals roam free and you could be sharing your breakfast table with giraffes, lounging poolside with elephants or experiencing the endangered rhino conservation. Book your next getaway and get in touch with your wild side!

THE RHINO CONSERVATION EXPERIENCE Where: Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa

Madikwe Game Reserve is committed to wildlife conservation, particularly when it comes to its critically endangered rhino species. To this end, the reserve has established The Honorary Officers Counter Poaching Unit (HOCPU). After an early morning wake up call, guests are transferred to Madikwe’s Airstrip to meet up with park representatives and a veterinary specialist. Following a brief introduction on rhino conservation and an overview of the plan of action, the vet will depart in a helicopter to find and dart a rhino in the vicinity. Safari vehicles are in continuous radio contact and remain on standby until the location of the rhino is called in. Guests are then transferred to the scene where the rhino is sedated, to participate in the process of gathering DNA samples and notching. The rhino is soon on its feet (sedated for no more than 10-15 minutes to minimise stress), now part of the reference book of identifiable rhinos within Madikwe’s population. It is through this process that Field Guides are able to identify and record rhino sightings for the purpose of monitoring the health of the population. In addition, the DNA samples are sent to Onderstepoort so that each animal’s unique ID can be added to the national database. The recording of DNA is vital in order to gain convictions against poachers. https://www.madikwesafarilodge.co.za/our-lodges/kopano-lodge/

GORILLA´S GALORE

Where: Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda Still one of the world´s best kept natural secrets, Uganda receives far less visitors than its neighbouring countries. Characterised by dramatic scenary throughout, it is home to deep lakes, stunning waterfalls, towering mountains and incredible wildlife. Uganda also has the highest concentration of primates on earth, including the mountain gorilla - now one of the rarest animals on the planet. There are just under 800 mountain gorillas in the world and over 460 of them reside in Uganda - mainly found in the epic Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site situated in the southwest corner of the country. The park is 331 square kilometres and impresses with a truly theatrical landscape and bio-diversity. Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp is the perfect base from which to track the gorillas. Due to its unique location, it’s not unusual for the gorilla families to visit the camp itself. The gorillas are completely wild but have become used to seeing a few humans after years of habituation. Many of the expert guides have been involved in this process since the beginning and are able to explain the complicated etiquette involved in meeting a giant silverback. This is an opportunity afforded only to a select few, as just eight visitors are allowed to view each group every day. http://www.sanctuaryretreats.com/uganda-camps-gorilla-forest

IN THE HEART OF ZAMBIA

Where: Sanctuary Chichele Presidential Lodge, South Luangwa National Park, Zambia The Luangwa National Park, located in eastern Zambia, is one of the most concentrated areas of wildlife in Africa, with 60 different animal species congregating around the Luangwa River. With the exception of the rhino, which has been poached into extinction in the area, you’ll have the chance to see all the big five game animals, as well as more than 400 species of birds and a large hippopotamus population. Sanctuary Chichele Presidential Lodge, originally built in the 1970s for Kenneth Kaunda, the former Zambian president, is the best option to stay at. This historic property has recently been carefully restored to maintain the original colonial style. A majestic arched entrance leads you in to a huge colonial-style lounge and outside the grand dining room, a long veranda stretches with views down the valley to the Luangwa River. Game viewing in South Luangwa is considered to be some of the best in the world. It is a notably good place to see leopards, particularly in the dry season when they have less cover in which to hide. From Sanctuary Chichele Presidential Lodge guests have the privilege of being able to go on night game drives during which it is possible to see all sorts of animals that are seldom seen by day leopard, hyena and bush baby. Plains game, such as antelope and zebra, are not scared by the lights so you are able to get very close to animals for fabulous photographs. http://www.sanctuaryretreats.com/zambia-lodges-chichele-presidential

SWIM UP BAR… FOR ELEPHANTS

Where: Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, Serengeti National Park, Tanzania Karibu! The Serengeti is the Africa of The Lion King, of Karen Blixen and Hemingway. It’s the home of graceful Maasai warriors and the fierce Big Five - lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and buffaloes - not to mention crocodiles, hippos, cheetahs and baboons. It’s also home to hundreds of colourful and lesser-known species such as lilac-breasted rollers, intricately marbled Charaxes butterflies and umbrella thorn acacia trees, which provide some shady respite from the sun-scorched landscape. To put it another way, there are more than 70 species of large mammals and more than 500 types of birds found among these riverine forests, swamps, rocky kopjes and grasslands. Arriving at the Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, located within East Africa’s world-famous wildlife sanctuary, the Serengeti National Park, is a once in a lifetime experience. You are greeted with ‘Jambo!’ (which means ‘Hello!’ in Swahili) and big smiles. Stepping inside, you instantly feel the magic of this beautiful place, designed to blend into nature while still exuding upscale, African style sophistication. The impressive pool overlooks a watering hole which is heavily used by herds of elephants and zebras and other wildlife in the area, much to the delight of guests who can watch the action from their lounge charis or while in the water. https://www.fourseasons.com/serengeti/

BREAKFAST WITH GIRAFFES Where: Giraffe Manor, Nairobi, Kenya

Located on the outskirts of Nairobi in 12 acres of private land within 140 acres of indigenous forest, Giraffe Manor is one of Nairobi’s most iconic buildings dating back to the 1930s and is reminiscent of the early days of Europeans in East Africa. Whilst the building itself resonates with the past, very much present is the herd of eleven resident Rothschild giraffe who tend to visit the Manor in the mornings and evenings to greet guests and sniff out some snacks before venturing out into their sanctuary. Giraffe Manor was originally the home of Jock and Betty Leslie-Melville, whose lifelong ambition became the preservation of this beautiful and threatened species of giraffe. Giraffe Manor was bought by the Carr-Hartleys in 2009. The giraffe have become creatures of habit and enjoy requesting food from delighted guests at the breakfast table. You’ll often find them sticking their long necks through the large bay windows in the hopes of receiving a titbit. And who can say no to those long eyelashes and woeful eyes? Apart from the giraffe spectacle and exquisite gourmet meals, the accommodation is also a highlight of giraffe manor. Each room is named after one of the Giraffes at the park and includes a sunny terrace, beautiful individualised interiors keeping the old English theme, contemporary bathrooms and gigantic beds! https://www.thesafaricollection.com/properties/giraffe-manor/ 54

We have the brands of Zaatar w Zeit - a Lebanese franchise, Life with Cacao our own brand that we are franchising in the GCC, and last but not least, FatBurger - an American franchise. We aim to be the destination of gourmet food offering a tasteful experience, humbly delivered.

What is a typical day like for you? I wake-up, put on a human face, go to work, gym, sleep repeat! Add eating five times a day in between!

It’s hard to believe that Life with Cacao is a home-grown concept. How did the idea develop and how did you make it look world-class? I’m just one of the many new members to hop on that

train. That’s what happens when the founders love chocolate and are well-travelled. They turned their passion into a business in 2010. Add good taste to that with a hard-working dedicated team and Life with Cacao was born.

How many locations are currently operating in Kuwait for each of your restaurants? 9 for Zaatar w Zeit, 6 for Life with Cacao, 2 for Fatburger. There are more on the way by the end of 2018.

What do you do to keep your menu new and exciting? Generally speaking, we are curious and nosy and annoy our chefs as much as we can! We have brainstorming sessions with our founders. It’s important to always be on the lookout for what’s new and what the trends are worldwide. We try to implement them in Kuwait before they hit the market because it’s a fast moving one. You need to be able to taste ten dishes at once then make one perfect for your brand to introduce it in the menu. The exciting part comes with our specials and/or our limited edition items. If you visited us this Valentines you would know what I’m talking about. Alert your taste buds for Ramadan!

We all know service is key. How do you motivate your staff to keep a constant service ethic? Keep the flow of work and support constant. Highlight the importance of them being the brand representatives and they will automatically reflect a positive ethical attitude.

What is the most challenging part of your job? The lack of time. No matter how much you plan ahead, you’re going to face a closer-than-expected deadline. So head held high, smiles on and hit it.

What is your favourite part of the job? The job itself.

“No matter how much you plan ahead, you’re going to face a closer-thanexpected deadline.”

What is something you have learned about yourself in your current position? I’m immune to pressure. That is something you earn along your career. You learn to manage your emotions and thoughts and to express them properly, keeping a cool working environment with and for your team.

How important would you say social media is for UFC? Not only for UFC but for everyone. It’s an intermediary between a business and its customers; an individual and the world.

What are the hot items selling at your restaurants these days? We have many! I’ll leave that open to you. Visit us and pick your favourites! Giving you a bestselling item based on numbers is not something I’m fond of, it’s more of a subjective matter.

What are your expansion plans for the near future? Life with Cacao opened in Qatar and KSA. Oman is under process along with second and third branches in Qatar and KSA. We’re trying to acquire more countries so wish us the best and stay tuned!

Best piece of career advice you received? I believe it’s the ones you give to yourself. For example: Stay true to who you are. Also, the all-time cliché: Find a job you love so that you never have to work a day in your life. It’s mainstream but true and I’m lucky to be one of the few to have found it.

What are some of your hobbies? Besides eating? I gym, I swim and I watch too many series and movies. I’m starting to question my sanity!

Where do you holiday? Home - Lebanon, my favourite country.

Your message for us at CP magazine. Make me look good in the pictures! And I love your initiatives and what you stand for, keep at it!"

CAULIFLOWER STEAK

C

auliflower steaks are the most impressive thing a vegetarian can cook. When I say steak, it means you will need an actual steak knife for this meal! It is recommended to have cauliflower daily because it contains vitamin C. It's also a good source of vitamin K, protein, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, magnesium, phosphorus, fiber, vitamin B6, folate, pantothenic acid, potassium and manganese!

INGREDIENTS l 1 large head of cauliflower (about 2 pounds) l 1/2 cup olive oil, divided l 2 teaspoons kosher salt, divided l 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, divided l 8 ounces green beans, trimmed l 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped l 3/4 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest l 1/3 cup chopped parsley, plus more for serving l 1/3 cup panko (Japanese breadcrumbs) l 1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan l 1 (15-ounce) can white beans, rinsed, drained l 1 cup golden or red cherry tomatoes (about 6 ounces), halved l 3 tablespoons mayonnaise l 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 62

Roast on middle rack, turning halfway through, until cauliflower is tender and browned, about 30 minutes. 3.Meanwhile, toss green beans with 1 tbsp. oil, 1/2 tsp. salt and 1/4 tsp. pepper on another rimmed baking sheet. Arrange in a single layer, then roast in upper third of oven until green beans begin to blister, about 15 minutes. 4.Whisk garlic, lemon zest, 1/3 cup parsley and remaining 6 tbsp. oil,

1 1/4 tsp. salt and 1/2 tsp. pepper in a medium bowl until smooth. Transfer half of mixture to another medium bowl. Add panko and Parmesan to first bowl and mix with your hands. Add white beans and tomatoes to second bowl and toss to coat. Whisk mayonnaise and mustard in a small bowl.

5.Remove sheets from oven. Spread mayonnaise mixture over cauliflower. Sprinkle 1/4 cup panko mixture evenly over cauliflower. Add white bean mixture to sheet with green beans and toss to combine. Return sheets to oven and continue to roast until white beans begin to crisp and panko topping starts to brown, 5-7 minutes more. 6.Divide cauliflower, green beans, white beans, and tomatoes among plates. Top with parsley.

HOW TO TREAT ACNE

C

P Magazine has invited me to investigate the reasons behind acne. This is one of the most common dermatologic conditions, affecting millions of people around the world. Acne typically develops in teenagers, but adults, at some point in their life, can suffer from this condition as well. The cause of acne is unknown and varies from person to person. Hormonal changes can play a big role, but lifestyle, nutrition, use of cosmetics, smoking and genetics are also contributors to the problem. As a makeup artist, I’m often asked how to best cover those unwanted visitors. Well, the truth is, it’s better to prevent them and treat them than to try and hide them. If you are trying to find out the reason behind your acne breakouts, it’s important to get your facts right and to address the specific cause of it. Acne is a skin condition characterized by red pimples due to inflamed or infected sebaceous glands. Poor hygiene can be one of the triggers so make sure you wash your face gently, remove your makeup properly using a mild cleanser at night and wash your face with lukewarm water before going to bed. Skin specialists agree on the use of

mild scrubs once or twice a week to remove dead cells, but be gentle with them. In fact, washing your skin too frequently or too aggressively can make acne worse and lead to irritated, traumatized skin that looks worse after treatment. Another recommendation is to maintain a balanced diet full of fiber, raw vegetables and fruits. Avoiding processed food is the best advice for a radiant complexion. Consumption of the right fats is important, such as avocados, nuts and good oils. Dermatologists agree that heavy fried foods and lactose rich diets, i.e. excessive milk consumption, have been associated with an increased risk of acne. Smoking is also harmful, not only to our health, but also to our skin. Doctors advise not to squeeze those pimples. You may not be able to resist the temptation but it’s better to leave them alone and instead, use an over-the-counter acne treatment gel, ointment or cream to help them shrink. Look for products that contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid and/or make an appointment with a recommended esthetician to help you clear out your skin.

Products to look for:

LA ROCHE- POSAY - This set of four products are what some dermatologists would recommend.

64

MARCH 2018

Proactive Solutions - A very good brand to look for and recommended by dermatologists.

Dermalogica’s MediBac Adult Acne Kit - Another option to help you with your skin problems. This set will help you clear, treat and prevent the triggers that lead to breakouts.

Murad - Another good brand recommended for acne prone skin and specialized in mature skin.

MARIO BADESCU Skin Care - A hormonal acne treatment made with natural organic ingredients.

BIODERMA Sebium Series Kit - Contains the essentials to treat and control your skin.

Neutrogena 60-day Complete Acne Treatment Another brand to trust, it is inexpensive and can be delivered to your door.

SUKI Skin Care (Acne Treatment) The Cystic Acne Treatment - With immune system boosters this is anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial. These bases are formulated to treat the underlying problems of acne.

If the skin is very red and you really need to cover the skin with makeup, I would suggest the use of a green primer under your foundation. In those cases, it’s necessary to use correctors and concealers. (In one of my previous articles, I talked about the colour correcting theory.) Chanel and Bobby Brown have two products that I like:

Makeup Forever have these tubes that are very easy to use under your foundation.

Also this is from the same brand, but with a different texture, depending on your skin type. These three tubes of Chanel are designed to counterbalance redness (green), dark spots (orange) and illuminate dullness (pink).

DARK CIRCLES

CAUSES AND REMEDIES Dark circles - one of the most common complaints that a patient presents within an aesthetic practice; and there is genuine reason to be concerned, because no-one wants to end up looking like a giant panda! Dark circles under the eyes tend to give you an older, rather haggard or tired appearance. There are many factors that lead to the dark circles, some of which are shown below.

Heredity

Genetics play an important role in the appearance of dark circles. Hereditary anatomical factors are often a direct cause of under eye circles. These circles particularly affect people who have thin under-eye skins because the flow of blood in the veins beneath the surface tends to show through the skin, giving it a bluishblack tint.

Age

Over time, skin loses collagen and thins, so veins show through more prominently. Sunbathing speeds up this process by breaking down collagen and mottling skin colour.

Lack of Sleep

Sleep deprivation is the most common cause and also the easiest to prevent (although oversleeping can also cause dark eye circles). According to research, the skin below the eyes may lose some moisture and elasticity when one is exhausted, which will change the way light is reflected off the skin.

Hormonal Changes

In some instances, pregnancy and birth control pills may also cause dark circles to develop. This is because of hormonal changes and increased pigmentation under the eyes, respectively.

Seasonal Allergies

They trigger the release of histamines in the body, which in turn inflame blood vessels and cause swelling. Additional causes for dark circles under your eyes include: •Eczema •Stress •Iron deficiency can prevent the blood from carrying sufficient oxygen to eye tissues. •Lifestyle. Excessive smoking can contribute to under-eye circles. Also, people who drink too much coffee may have difficulty getting enough sleep. •Skin pigmentation abnormalities. •Excessive exposure to the sun. Sun exposure encourages your body to produce more melanin.

How to Treat Them

Treatment depends upon the cause which is often difficult to pin down. However, if your circles are the result of vascular issues, double up on pillows at night to stop blood from building up under your eyes. In the morning, apply a cold compress for about five minutes to constrict the blood vessels. Use an eye cream with caffeine, which helps constrict vessels. Other smart alternatives include Arnica-based creams, which are considered to have anti-inflammatory properties and may reduce the appearance of darkness. Eye creams with green tea or grape seed oil help strengthen capillary walls. You can tweak your diet, too. Flavonol-rich dark chocolate (an ounce a day) and foods full of omega-3 fatty acids (salmon, walnuts) may improve blood flow to the skin. For allergy-induced circles, consider taking an over-the-counter antihistamine before allergies begin to abate shadows. And, finally, if thin skin is the issue, use a collagen-building cream. One of my top go-to ingredients is retinol as it helps increase collagen production. Vitamin C also encourages production and can help brighten skin tone. And wear sunscreen daily, or you’ll cancel out the benefits from any of these treatments.

Surgical or Medical Correction of Dark Circles Under Eyes Laser surgery: Laser surgery for skin resurfacing has been with us since the Ultra pulse CO2 laser was

invented in the 1990s. Although this device had been designed to treat sun damage and to remove skin growths before they became cancerous, it was soon discovered to be useful for removing dark circles under eyes as well. Laser treatment destroys some of the melanin that can darken skin and can also be used to tighten loose skin, or to remove excess skin that causes the appearance of ‘baggy eyes’. Studies have also shown that laser treatment can encourage the formation of new collagen in the skin. Injections: This is another way to treat dark circles under the eyes. ‘Filler injections’ may conceal the melanin and blood vessels that discolor the skin around your eyes.

Carol Roncoletta Director of PR & Communications Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel & Spa

“I am learning to embrace my perfectly, imperfect life...”

Carol Roncoletta believes that no idea is ridiculous and no dream is too big. Skilled in languages as well as PR and Marketing, Carol is passionate about communication and being able to convey messages in different ways – including her own very special message for International Women’s Day...

Hi, please introduce yourself to our readers. I’m a proud mother of two children (aged five and a year and a half) with an exciting career in the Public Relations and Marketing industry. I have been holding the position of Director of Public Relations and Communications at Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel & Spa for the past five years. I am of Lebanese origins and have been happily living in Kuwait for the past ten years.

Tell us about your education. My academic years were in Lebanon where Arabic is the language of instruction at the primary and secondary levels, with French and English introduced early in primary school. Since then, I developed a growing love for languages – particularly French and Italian. Therefore, I initially chose my career path in Translation and Living Languages and graduated after four years from the Holy Spirit University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in this field. Soon after starting my working career, I felt like going back to studying and pursuing another degree. So, I chose Human Resources as it helps developing personal and organizational skills; it was an additional educational asset which actually helped me start in the world of Public Relations and Communications.

What was your first job out of college and how did you land that position? Right after college, I explored a range of fields from translation to broadcast journalism to copywriting. As you can tell, all of these are interconnected with communications and the experience of creating, structuring and conveying messages in different ways, which is what I am passionate about. 68

MARCH 2018

What made you go into Marketing and Public Relations? There are many reasons behind that, but mostly I love that every day is different - no two days are ever the same. Creativity is also a must, so you’re constantly flexing your creative muscles as writing and creating is a big part of any role in PR and Marketing. Of course, along the way, you meet great people and learn from them. This really matters because it has a direct impact as what you do today makes a difference on what tomorrow will bring you. So overall, I see Public Relations and Marketing as a lifestyle, it becomes part of who you are and the life you live. I also believe that PR professionals have special characteristics in common – they are good communicators, creative, love socializing and building relationships with people from different backgrounds. They enjoy venturing out into the world and have an investigative and persuasive nature which allows them to always be on top of the latest trends and news in the industry.

Tell us briefly your professional journey to date. It all started in Lebanon where I landed my first serious contract with one of the leading Telecom companies. I started as a Communication Assistant where I was managing internal projects and then moved on to the external PR projects and media campaigns. I found myself flourishing in this area and my responsibilities grew and became more interesting. Then I moved to Kuwait and was offered an exciting opportunity in PR & Marketing in the hospitality industry. Soon after, I wanted to change and I worked for a renowned luxury retailer leading the division of PR. It was a great learning experience where I had the opportunity to lead with creativity and pro-

activeness. After a couple of years, I was approached by the pre-opening team at the Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel & Spa, offering me this extremely motivating opportunity. This is how I went back to the world of hospitality which is vibrant, lively and always interesting.

What is a typical day like for you? There’s really no such thing as typical in the day of a PR & Marketing professional. The one typical thing is that wherever I am, I am always woken by an alarm. The only thing that stays awake 24/7 is the Jumeirah Messilah Beach. So, I start my day by quickly going through my emails and messages to ensure that I am up to date before making myself a cup of hot chocolate and milk. Then starts the rush in the morning to drop my son to school and head to my office by around 7:30am. My next step would be to catch up with the newspapers, social media and the most pertinent news stories of the day. In a hotel business, it is common to have morning briefings with the teams to ensure that everyone is on top of their daily tasks, work is smooth and guests’ experiences are up to their expectations. It’s a great opportunity as well to get creative and draw inspiration from each other. Next comes the long list of emails to deal with and the last minute requests before moving on to the PR projects and media campaigns that we’re currently working on and the ones that are coming up. Of course, this is interrupted every now and then with a visiting guest or a meeting with a company or an agency. On different occasions, I have lunch meetings with media, guests or even team lunches. So much of the day is spent by multitasking and following up. Around 6 pm, it’s time to head home where my little ones are waiting expecting some fun time. So, here starts another activity where I have to use different skills to start the entertainment and forget about the professional side. By around 8pm, they are in bed and how I’d wish that it’s my bedtime too! But it’s the time where I catch up on the day with my husband over dinner. There are other evenings, where we’re organizing an event at the Jumeirah Messila Beach or I am invited to an event or even hosting a dinner at home, and so on… 70

MARCH 2018

What social media tactics are you leveraging? In the fast paced world we live in today, leveraging social media to support and enhance our PR and Marketing efforts plays a vital role in our strategy. It helps increase our Hotel’s awareness and positioning online, improve sales and drive more traffic to our social channels. Therefore, we ensure that we stay active on the main platforms, be it Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or Snapchat. Each channel has its own tactic based on the profile of our audience and their preferences. Content generation is also taken into account. It consists mainly of developing awareness and understanding what Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel & Spa and Jumeirah Group represent. Then comes the focus on the engagement of the people who follow us, be it guests, media, influencers, celebrities, travel agents etc. We have a wide variety of people who follow us from the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and international markets as well. We push out news and information that are valuable and would like people to know about such as offers and packages. We also share some ‘behind the scenes’ details that focus on the Stay, Dine and Relax experiences that Jumeirah properties are renowned for. We also take into consideration our guests’ feedbacks and every now and then we post videos of their experiences with us. Another tactic we use is to repost the beautiful pictures that our followers share while they visit us. It’s our way to show appreciation. Competitions are also very popular and we receive high engagement rates as soon as the post is live. In the end, it becomes very rewarding.

What would you say is your biggest achievement? If I look back, I would say that leading all the PR & Communications activities that contributed to the successful positioning of the Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel & Spa as one of the top resort destinations in Kuwait is one of my biggest career achievements. It took a lot of effort and learning. This wouldn’t have been done without the great team members that I have. Along the way, I welcomed both my children which made me the proud mother I am today; this is definitely my biggest personal achievement in life.

When it comes to making connections with people, what would be your suggestions? A genuine smile, that’s the first thing that comes to my mind. It puts people at ease before starting any connection. In my nature, I also avoid being judgemental of other people’s actions or backgrounds; I prefer to search for common interests to make the most out of each person I meet and treat them the way they like to be treated.

Has having a family impacted your decision-making process? To a certain extent.Family takes the priority over taking decisions whether at work or even on a personal level and the moto of taking any decision is always Family Comes First.

A lot of women feel that they have to choose between family and career either because of societal pressure, or lack of support from a partner. How do manage everything so gracefully? I am very grateful for being able to succeed in my career which is my personal satisfaction. At the same time, having a family is a dream come true. Maintaining a balance between them is not as easy as it sounds as I constantly try to be at the right place at the right time. But I am learning to embrace my perfectly imperfect life and I feel lucky to have a fantastic support at home and at work.

Have you experienced a disadvantage because you are a woman in this industry or region? Not at all. I believe a woman adds her own special touches and creative approaches in the world of Public Relations and Marketing. Let alone the Hospitality industry where it’s all about thoughtful experiences and making guests simply feel at home. It is harder though to prove yourself, but it’s all in the approach, communication and achievements.

Who are some of the women you’ve looked up to in your life? I have been influenced positively by many women throughout my life. One of them is my mother, who is also my best friend. At the start of my career as well, I had a great mentor who used to be my direct manager. I have learnt a lot from her, mainly the discipline at work and the right planning. I am happy we’re still in touch despite the distance.

What are some of your hobbies? I have a lot and I don’t get to practise all of them! From time to time, I like cooking for my children and inviting friends over. I love socialising and welcoming people to our house. Travelling is definitely a must. Reading is a pleasure. Biking is my freedom and hiking is a return to nature for me. 72

MARCH 2018

What is your favourite holiday destination? While there are diverse places to see in this world, I would choose Italy as my top destination. There are many great reasons to love this country, from the irresistible cuisine, to its lively people and its interesting culture. Every region in Italy has its own special and unique character and Italians have similar temperaments and cultural values as us.

What is your favourite cuisine/food? I am a fan of Mediterranean cuisine.

What is the best advice you have been given and by whom? My husband once told me, ‘Don’t look at other people’s gardens, look at your own.’

Is there a motto or mantra that you adhere to or believe in? I once received a pillow when I was little. Written on it was, ‘Life is full of ups and downs’. So, I grew up with this in mind and learnt to embrace both life’s ups and downs. You will have experiences that might bring you down which is part of life, but you must find a way to regenerate and lift yourself up. So, with every downhill, there is an uphill – a lesson that you will learn all your life.

What do you think is important advice to give to young, female, PR professionals? Be passionate as this is the driving force that keeps you going. At the end of the day, you can make a difference in what you do and whatever you do becomes a reflection of who you are.

Your message for Women on International Women’s Day? So many messages can be sent on this special occasion, but I believe the most important one is to say that each woman is a beautiful human being. Her ideas and convictions matter, no idea is ridiculous and no dream is too big. I encourage them all to be true to themselves, to do what they love and love what they do and they can accomplish anything.

48 Hours in the life of

TheStylistes

with Carla & Marie Such glamorous lives fashion stylists must have, right? A life full of shopping, dining and fabulous events. But how much truth is there in that common preconception? Today, we, Carla and Marie, a team of fashion stylists based in Dubai, are going to walk you through 48 hours of our working lives. Are you ready to learn what is behind the stylish outfits we see on television and in magazines? Then, let’s begin!

DAY 1: MEETINGS, SHOPPING & FITTING 06.30 Wake up. It’s an early start for us, TheStylistes!

08.00 Breakfast meeting with film director and photographer to discuss the brief and wardrobe mood boards of our upcoming TV commercial/photoshoot. 09.00 Contact the models/cast that have been selected for the shoot, in order to find out their sizes. 10.00 Shopping! As soon as the stores open, we are ready to begin sourcing the required wardrobe for tomorrow’s shoot.

76

MARCH 2018

12.00 Lunch time. Pen in hand, it’s time to go through what we have sourced so far and what is missing, over a delicious lunch! We need energy to keep going, right? The question now is how do we agree on what to eat?

13.00 Continue shopping, including a visit to our tailor to get those garments that can't be found, stitched.

16.00 A quick coffee please!

20.00 Back to the stores and tailor. Our preparation day is not over yet! We still need to make final wardrobe changes and alterations as a result of the wardrobe fitting that just took place.

17.00 Fitting all models. We then grab our steamer, rack and the wardrobe purchases to head to the production company organising the shoot. All models and cast will be there for the so-called ‘wardrobe fitting’. This is one of the most important stages of our shoot preparation. We try all possible wardrobe options on the cast in order to select - in conjunction with the director, photographer and client - the final wardrobe per character and scene for tomorrow’s shoot.

21.00 We receive the Shooting Schedule and Call Sheet for tomorrow’s shoot. These documents, prepared by the production team, are key to all of us, as they include all details regarding tomorrow’s shoot - location, call time and shooting schedule.

22.00 Packing for tomorrow’s shoot. Last but not least comes the labelling and wardrobe organisation of the selected and approved wardrobe per character and scene. If there’s one thing we have learned from this job, it’s that organisation is the key to a successful shoot! 23.00 Quick bite and off to get some rest! Tomorrow is going to be a big day.

MARCH 2018

11.00 The production progresses successfully. This is music to our ears!

13.00 Lunch time with the rest of the crew. We usually get catering on set serving us all delicious local dishes. 14.00 Filming continues with new scenes, wardrobe changes and more steaming!

16.00 Start Packing. As the shooting day approaches its end, we start packing the wardrobe we no longer need. We like to be as efficient as possible. 17.00 It’s a wrap! A happy moment for all crew members and cast. It is the moment of completion and the feeling of success by all involved in the project. Plus, we get to go home (or to an event, in our case!) 19.00 Let’s add some glamour to our lives. Even though we are a little tired - not to say exhausted - from the past couple of days, we still have some energy to attend some fabulous events we have been invited to. Now, the most important question is, what shall we wear?

As you can see, the life of a wardrobe stylist is quite intense, packed with shopping, fittings and long working hours. We must admit that a mix of emotions flow into every project we take on - excitement, intensity, even stress. But above all, we feel blessed to have a job we are really passionate about. SO YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE THE FIRST FASHIONISTA? THINK AGAIN DARLING!

W

e sisters have been in, on, and all over the fashion scene for as long as anyone can remember. But hold on....are we the first fashionistas of this era? Was this word especially derived for us, the fashion forward women of the 21st century? Of course not! But do take loads of hard earned pride ladies; for our predecessors were the pioneers in all that was fashion and style, and we are their trendy offspring. How cute is that? Jurassic as it is and, miraculous as it may sound, fashionistas never left us. They were there, at those medieval courts in Europe and as far east as the forbidden city in China; even at the hanging gardens of Ancient Mesopotamia. Female fashionistas influenced war and peace, life altering decisions of powerful men and the rise and fall of nations and civilizations - and they did it just by the clever choice of attire. It was that simple. It was the great Julius Caesar who once whispered in Queen Cleopatra's ear, the following: "..the shade of your silhouette effects my decisions, for that hue has completely succumbed my mental abilities." If you think about it you would say: what a fantastic way to avoid war - just by wearing the right shade of colour at the right time (for the right man of course). And with that right choice of colour, Egypt was once again under Queen Cleo's control; as was Caesar himself. Imagine that! But this is just the tip of the iceberg; just one of a trillion examples of hundreds of pioneer lavish, stylish women to whom we infant fashionistas owe a great deal. Those unique set of women not only used their mental wit in a man's-man-manly world, they also used their fashionable capabilities to do great things; good things for themselves and their country, just by deciding what to wear to their royal courts the next day in order to sway the

judge and jury. Fashion statements have a great deal of influence on our psyche and on the minds of people around us. It can alter our feelings and decisions in an instant. Imagine you wake up in the morning all ready to start your new job and you are faced with the crucial decision of what to wear to make a lasting

since 2010

but good first impression. If you chose appropriately then it’s a good day all day. If not, then your whole day is a mess of gloom. There is a huge misconception of what a fashionista is today. We believe that a fashionista is someone who wears trends (basically, expensive high end brands). But this is not the case. The derivative is a person who creates and promotes fashionable ideas. Real fashionistas do not believe in trends or follow them because they are the ones who created them, thus implementing them to create a trend. Yet, we don't give them that much credit for all of their contributions and hard work. Some people believe that anyone can be a trend-setter, a fashion forward individual or an innovator, just by wearing the latest top and trendiest jeans. But this is far from the truth. Plus, it's really exhausting being a fashionista! Sometimes, all we fashionistas want to do is to melt on our favourite sofa, eat garlic chicken followed by chocolate ice-cream, and watch re-runs of the Tudors in our favourite old but gold peejays - for a whole week and not take a single selfie! It would feel so good, wouldn't it? FYI, these are my plans this weekend!

Nonetheless, and to be horribly serious, it is my duty to call out to all my fellow fashionistas. We are given a rare gift, a gift that is changing rapidly and growing eagerly in front of our eyes. It's our duty to be diligent but delicate never stubbornly bias - with our ideas and arguments that we share online. Because people view, like, mimic and then share, and a new trend is born, restlessly exploding onto the world. Fashionable insight is a gift, a rare commodity. So please, ladies and gents, handle with care! It goes without saying that all real fashionistas have a fashion mission wired in their genes. That is, to wake up fashionably each morning and look, feel and aspire style. We do that willingly, by maintaining that path of fashion stylishly lit with new innovations and inspirations, in honour of all our predecessors who walked this turbulent, but trendy path before us. Until next time, my darlings. Stay safe and fashionable!

THE ITALIAN TEACHER by Tom Rachman

Rome, 1955. The artists gather for a picture at a party in an ancient villa. Bear Bavinsky, creator of vast canvases, larger than life, is at the centre of the picture. His wife, Natalie, edges out of the shot. From the side of the room watches little Pinch - their son. At five years old he loves Bear almost as much as he fears him. After Bear abandons their family, Pinch will still worship him, striving to live up to the Bavinsky name; while Natalie, a ceramicist, cannot hope to be more than a forgotten muse. Trying to burn brightly in his father's shadow, Pinch's attempts flicker and die. Yet by the end of a career of twists and compromises, Pinch will enact an unexpected rebellion that will leave forever his mark upon the Bear Bavinsky legacy.

In the summer of 1969, Leslie Van Houten and Patricia Krenwinkel carried out horrific acts of butchery on the orders of the charismatic cult leader Charles Manson. At their murder trial the following year, lead prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi described the two so-called Manson Women as "human monsters." But to anyone who knew them growing up, they were bright, promising girls, seemingly incapable of such an unfathomable crime. Award-winning journalist Nikki Meredith began visiting Van Houten and Krenwinkel in prison to discover how they had changed during their incarceration. The more Meredith got to know them, the more she was lured into a deeper dilemma: What compels "normal" people to do unspeakable things?

TOMORROW WILL BE DIFFERENT: LOVE, LOSS, AND THE FIGHT FOR TRANS EQUALITY

EVERY NOTE PLAYED

by Sarah McBride, Joe Biden

From neuroscientist and New York Times bestselling author of Still Alice comes a powerful exploration of regret, forgiveness, freedom, and what it means to be alive. An accomplished concert pianist, Richard received standing ovations from audiences all over the world in awe of his rare combination of emotional resonance and flawless technique. Every finger of his hands was a finely calibrated instrument, dancing across the keys and striking each note with exacting precision. That was eight months ago. Richard now has ALS, and his entire right arm is paralyzed. His fingers are impotent, still, devoid of possibility. The loss of his hand feels like a death, a loss of true love, a divorce—his divorce.

A timely and captivating memoir about gender identity set against the backdrop of the transgender equality movement, by a leading activist and the National Press Secretary for the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest LGBTQ civil rights organization. Sarah McBride is on a mission to fight for transgender rights around the world. But before she was a prominent activist, and before she became the first transgender person to speak at the Democratic National Convention in 2016, she was a teenager struggling with her identity.

THE SUN DOES SHINE: HOW I FOUND LIFE AND FREEDOM ON DEATH ROW

GIRLS BURN BRIGHTER

by Anthony Ray Hinton

A searing, electrifying debut novel set in India and America, about a once-in-a-lifetime friendship between two girls who are driven apart but never stop trying to find one another again. When Poornima first meets Savitha, she feels something she thought she lost for good when her mother died: hope. Poornima's father hires Savitha to work one of their sari looms, and the two girls are quickly drawn to one another. Savitha is even more impoverished than Poornima, but she is full of passion and energy. She shows Poornima how to find beauty in a bolt of indigo cloth, a bowl of yogurt rice and bananas, the warmth of friendship. Suddenly their Indian village doesn't feel quite so claustrophobic, and Poornima begins to imagine a life beyond the arranged marriage her father is desperate to lock down for her. But when a devastating act of cruelty drives Savitha away, Poornima leaves behind everything she has ever known to find her friend again. Her journey takes her into the darkest corners of India's underworld, on a harrowing cross-continental journey, and eventually to an apartment complex in Seattle. Alternating between the girls’ perspectives as they face relentless obstacles, Girls Burn Brighter introduces two heroines who never lose the hope that burns within them.

A powerful, revealing story of hope, love, justice, and the power of reading by a man who spent thirty years on death row for a crime he didn't commit. In 1985, Anthony Ray Hinton was arrested and charged with two counts of capital murder in Alabama. Stunned, confused, and only twenty-nine years old, Hinton knew that it was a case of mistaken identity and believed that the truth would prove his innocence and ultimately set him free. But with no money and a different system of justice for a poor black man in the South, Hinton was sentenced to death by electrocution. He spent his first three years on Death Row at Holman State Prison in agonizing silence—full of despair and anger toward all those who had sent an innocent man to his death. But as Hinton realized and accepted his fate, he resolved not only to survive, but find a way to live on Death Row. For the next twenty-seven years he was a beacon— transforming not only his own spirit, but those of his fellow inmates, fifty-four of whom were executed mere feet from his cell. With the help of civil rights attorney and bestselling author of Just Mercy, Bryan Stevenson, Hinton won his release in 2015. THE CURSE OF THE BOYFRIEND SWEATER: ESSAYS ON CRAFTING by Alanna Okun

People who craft know things. They know how to transform piles of yarn into sweaters and scarves. They know that some items, like woolen bikini tops, are better left unknit. They know that making a hat for a newborn baby isn’t just about crafting something small but appreciating the beginnings of life, which sometimes helps make peace with the endings. They know that if you knit your boyfriend a sweater, your relationship will most likely be over before the last stitch. Alanna Okun knows that crafting keeps her anxiety at bay. She knows that no one will ever be as good a knitting teacher as her beloved grandmother. And she knows that even when we can’t control anything else, we can at least control the sticks, string, and fabric right in front of us.

THE FINAL SIX by Alexandra Monir

When Leo, an Italian championship swimmer, and Naomi, a science genius from California, are two of the twenty-four teens drafted into the International Space Training Camp, their lives are forever altered. After erratic climate change has made Earth a dangerous place to live, the fate of the population rests on the shoulders of the final six who will be scouting a new planet. Intense training, global scrutiny, and cutthroat opponents are only a few of the hurdles the contestants must endure in this competition. For Leo, the prospect of traveling to Europa—Jupiter’s moon—to help resettle humankind is just the sense of purpose he’s been yearning for since losing his entire family in the flooding of Rome. Naomi, after learning of a similar space mission that mysteriously failed, suspects the ISTC isn’t being up front with them about what’s at risk.

World premiere of the Mission E Cross Turismo

Tissot T-Race Marc Marquez A TRIBUTE TO A CHAMPION

Spark for the future: with the Mission E Cross Turismo, Porsche will be unveiling the concept study of an electrically driven cross utility vehicle (CUV) at the Geneva Motor Show. The strengths of the four-door Cross Turismo include an emotional design with striking off-road elements as well as an innovative display and operating concept with touchscreen and eye-tracking control. Measuring 4.95 metres in length, the concept vehicle has all-wheel drive and an 800volt architecture, prepared for connection to the fast charging network. It can also be charged by induction, at a charging station or using the Porsche home energy storage system. Additionally, the debut of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS heralds the arrival of one of the most radical high-performance sports cars today. It produces 520 hp (383 kW) from a four-litre capacity. Mission E Cross Turismo – the electric athlete from Porsche Two permanent magnet synchronous motors (PSM) with a system output of more than 600 hp (440 kW) enable the Mission E Cross Turismo to accelerate to 100 km/h in less than 3.5 seconds and to reach a speed of 200 km/h in under 12 seconds. Furthermore, the level of continuous power is unmatched by any other electric vehicle: multiple accelerations are possible in direct succession without loss of performance.

‘The Mission E Cross Turismo is an expression of how we envision the all-electric future. It combines sportiness and everyday practicality in unique style. Our vehicle will be fast to drive, but also quick to recharge and able to replicate its performance time after time,’ says Oliver Blume, CEO of Porsche AG. The Mission E Cross Turismo, which is already fit for the road, builds on the concept of the Mission E study presented by Porsche at the 2015 International Motor Show (IAA). The seriesproduced car based on this model will celebrate its premiere next year. Close to motor racing: the new 911 GT3 RS with a 520 hp naturally aspirated engine With the 911 GT3 RS, Porsche will also be presenting the most powerful road-going track sports car with a naturally aspirated engine. The power of 383 kW (520 hp) is generated by a six-cylinder boxer engine with a four-litre capacity and a revving range of up to 9,000 rpm. Just like the heart of the new GT model, the chassis comes directly from the world of motor sport upgraded with rear-axle steering, all geared towards uncompromising precision. The 911 GT3 RS can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, reaching a top speed of 312 km/h (194 mph).

Mastercard Announces Roadmap for Contactless Payments Consistency Mastercard has announced an initiative to create greater payment consistency by making “tap and go” standard in the next five years. The changes underway ensure that consumers, merchants and governments around the world will be able to take advantage of nextgeneration digital technology which deliver greater security and convenience. Beginning later this year, Mastercard will require a series of card and terminal upgrades across the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and Asia Pacific, to bring secure and convenient contactless card payment technology to more people in more locations around the world. This move means that every cardholder will be able to “tap” their card or device to pay, in these regions and

every day. The speed of contactless payments, coupled with its dynamic EMV grade authentication protecting against fraud, is transforming everyday commerce and benefiting merchants and consumers alike. It also helps issuers by increasing card usage and displacing cash, and powers unique use cases for governments like public transportation in some of the world’s biggest cities. Today, millions of consumers are able to pay with a simple tap in over 8 million locations across 111 countries. Across the Middle East and Africa, there was a 27fold increase in contactless transactions in 2017, with the volume spent growing 18x.

The Tissot T-Race Marc Marquez combines the sporty body of the Tissot T-Race with design touches which are a homage to the celebrated new Tissot ambassador, Marc Marquez. The youngest ever four-time MotoGPTM World Champion, onetime Moto2 and one-time 125cc World Champion speeds to victory in his orange team colours, reflected here in pops of bright colour and in exuberant orange stitching on the sporty black rubber bracelet. A sleek watch case in black and grey PVD adds an efficient edge, hinting at the proficiency of Marc Marquez himself. Racing attributes Inspired by motorbikes, the Tissot T-Race Marc Marquez incorporates the athletic body of the Tissot T-Race Limited Edition 2018. A case encircled by a fibreglass ring, pushers engraved with start and go and tyre tread marks all succinctly depict the speed and adrenaline of the race track, while a brake-disc bezel and bracelet that resembles the racers’ suits conjure up the atmosphere of race day. Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo: The electric high-performer for an active lifestyle

PRESS MICHAEL KORS SUMMER 2018 | GETAWAY GLAMOUR

Spark for the future: At the Geneva Motor Show, Porsche is presenting the Mission E Cross Turismo, a concept study of an electronically powered CrossUtility Vehicle (CUV). The model is targeted at individuals with active lifestyles that include travelling, sports or outdoor activities. Thanks to the all-wheel drive, any ski piste is reachable with ease, while the interior features ample space for sports equipment and the modern mounting systems make it easy to transport surfboards or a Porsche e-bike. Features of the four-door, four-seater concept include an emotional design with striking off-road elements, as well as a new display and control concept with touchscreen displays and eye tracking. The 4.95-metre length concept vehicle is ready for charging either via the 800-volt fast-charge network, induction technology, a charging dock or with the Porsche home energy management system. The Mission E Cross Turismo is a continuation of Porsche’s Mission E study, initially presented at the 2015 International Motor Show (IAA). Unmistakeable Porsche design DNA A low bonnet between powerfully curved wings means that at first glance, the front of the Mission E Cross Turismo displays its ties with Porsche’s sports car icon, the 911. The vertical air intakes at the front, known as “air curtains” and Matrix LED headlights highlight striking design features. The typical Porsche four-point daytime running lights have been developed into narrow, threedimensional glass elements. Embedded in four floating wings, the lights also feature the new four-point indicator. In addition, the vehicle benefits from the Porsche X-Sight high-performance high beam. Off-road design elements include the rugged wheel arches and door sills, the striking look of the front spoiler and rear apron, and the increased ground clearance. The silhouette is enhanced by a sporty roofline that tapers towards the rear – often referred to by Porsche designers as the “flyline” – this feature echoes the rear of the Panamera Sport Turismo. The dynamic design of the side windows also showcase typical Porsche styling. Meanwhile, the broad wings and threedimensional side walls with air outlets behind the front wheels reinforce the sporty crossover character of the 1.99-metre wide concept vehicle. Distinctive side skirts and 20-inch wheels with 275/40 R 20 tyres are among the vehicle's other defining features.

Summer escapism comes to life in flowing silhouettes, delicate textures and feminine Details. Midi hemlines, ruffles and lace exude romantic charm, while floral motifs Instill dresses, separates and accessories with free-spirited flair. www.cpmagazine.net
