s COVID-19 continues to wreak havoc across the globe, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to escape the cloak of doom that has draped itself over our world. Confined to our homes and separated from our friends and family, it’s no wonder many of us are feeling anxious and unsettled. After weeks of curfews, self-isolation and social distancing, we eagerly await confirmation that our lives can return to some kind of normality. In the meantime, however, we are bombarded with depressing facts and figures about infection and mortality rates. As if the lockdown itself isn’t bad enough, constant news updates guarantee to push us even further into the depths of despair. Regardless of whether we rely on TV, radio, social media channels or newspapers for our daily dose of doom, there’s no escaping the deluge of despondency that drains into our homes and minds. Granted, coronavirus is the subject on everyone’s lips. It’s devastating to the point of life-changing and has infected almost every corner of the world. But in a time when anxiety and depression are prevalent, would it not be better to focus on the positive? Around the globe, amazing people are doing amazing things. Those in the health service are rightly receiving praise for their hard work and dedication in caring for the sick and whilst the efforts of others may not receive such widespread recognition, their contribution is still significant. Take Captain Tom Moore, for example. The 100-yearold army veteran set about walking 100 lengths of his garden to raise money for the UK’s National Health Service. His intended target was £1,000 but his fundraising total now stands at over £30 million. What a treat to hear such an uplifting story amidst the monotonous misery. The London Marathon, another casualty of COVID-19, should have taken place on Sunday 26th April. The event usually raises over £66 million for various charities. As an alternative, the so-called ‘2.6 Challenge’ was launched to encourage people

to come up with a fundraising idea involving the numbers two and six. One man decided to run 2.6 miles backwards in 26 minutes. Someone else walked 2.6 miles but stopped to do 26 handstands along the way. Two children built a 2.6 metre tower of Lego and one imaginative lady made 26 costume changes whilst running up the stairs 26 times. Bravo! Our freedom of choice may be restricted but we are still able to decide what to watch on the television, what news reports to give our attention to and how to deal with this ongoing pandemic. A positive mind-set is essential during this challenging period so focusing on the inspiring rather than the depressing is essential. Of course, we don’t have to rely on news from the outside world, we can create our own uplifting stories, no matter how great or how small. We can also take satisfaction from the small changes we have made to our daily routines and endeavour to continue these new habits once the curfews and lockdowns have ended. Many of us are shopping for our elderly, sick or disabled neighbours. Some of us are donating money or food parcels to those in need. And, thanks to the wonders of modern technology, families all over the world are coming together on-line to support each other in this unprecedented period of uncertainty and dread. How wonderful it would be if these acts of kindness, generosity and love were to continue once restrictions have been lifted and virus fears have ceased. Unfortunately, no-one knows when ‘normality’ will resume or indeed, if it ever will. I suspect life, as we know it, will never return to its pre-virus state. Social distancing in some countries is set to continue until the end of the year (and beyond). Restaurants, cafes and coffee shops must limit the number of customers allowed through their doors. And although the number of people visiting supermarkets and other stores may reduce, the queues to enter such premises will remain. That said, if we all continue to focus on the positive, be more tolerant, less selfish and more understanding, then surely, that can only be a good thing.

FOR THE LOVE OF ANIMALS T here are many techniques to raising your vibrations and live your best self. For instance, they say a woman changes once she gives birth to her first child. So what if you aren’t capable of giving birth because of a variety of reasons such as, um, being a man or other reasons or circumstances? The ideal way after that to raising your vibrations is to care for an animal. Animals, whether they are obedient or not or helpless beings. They are capable of giving so much love, which can fill your heart with joy; and the feelings of love and joy have a high vibrational frequency. The emission of their frequencies onto us are also very strong. If they feel fear, they emit it strongly onto us, meaning, we feel the feeling of fear strongly. That is why we need to constantly show these animals positive affection so that we raise their vibrations, which in turn raises our vibrations. I am not suggesting that you go out and get an animal, because an animal is a huge responsibility. If you have the intention of bringing an animal home you must have the intention of keeping the animal until the end of its life. An animal has thoughts and emotions similar to a child. If you were to get an animal to keep and decided you do not want it anymore and give it away, even if it is going to a bigger and better home with more love and care it will deal with some psychological issues. It will wonder what it did wrong for you not to want it anymore. Keep in mind that most likely when you took this animal, it was taken away from it’s mother at a very young age. So think very

hard before taking an animal into your care and the new responsibilities that it entails.

A great idea is to either foster an animal or visit animals in a shelter. Fostering is when the animal is looking for a forever home, but a foster takes care of it until that suitable match comes. This is a time where you can nurture an animal and teach it love and kindness. Some animals might be more work depending on the environment it has come out of, but the more effort you put in and see the positive outcome, the higher your vibrations will be. Visiting of animal shelters have the same effect. Those animals live there until they find their forever home, but all they want is to share love and joy with us humans. So you are able to go there and play with them and show them that they are loved and you end up leaving the place with an elevated state of mind. For many foster care is suitable because they do not have the added responsibility of an animal and can choose the period of time to share with animals. The saying goes “give and you shall receive” and although it is not something that you can see with the naked eye, energy is a very real thing that can be measured in different ways. Animals allow us to acknowledge that it is not very difficult to raise our vibrations. All they need is love and joy and how good we feel when we receive that in return. Love heals and love mends and studies by the Heartmath Institute prove this scientifically. Do not rush into the idea of caring for an animal, but keep it in mind as one of a variety of ways to raise your vibrations.

CONSISTENCY IS KEY TO QUALITY SLEEP in Ramadan Amid COVID-19 Lifestyle Disruptions Expert Advises Regular bedtimes encourage restorative sleep, which supports the immune system and helps regulate appetite-control hormones Dr. Vaishal Shah

P

rotective measures amid the COVID-19 pandemic, including social distancing and studying and working from home, will inevitably have an impact on how Ramadan is observed this year, and on lifestyle habits such as sleeping patterns. A sleep medicine specialist at Cleveland Clinic in the U.S. points out that greater flexibility in working hours, lack of late-night social events and increased screen time could all impact on sleep quality, which in turn affects immune system response. According to Vaishal Shah, M.D. of Cleveland Clinic’s Sleep Disorders Center: “During the COVID-19 pandemic, people are seeking ways to optimize their immune systems, and sleep is an important component in this process. Many studies have determined that our immune response is suppressed if we do not get sufficient and consistent quality sleep, making us more susceptible to infections in general, with recovery also taking a longer time.” He explains that during sleep, the immune system releases proteins called cytokines, some of which help to protect against infection and inflammation. Sleep deprivation can lead to decreased production of both cytokines and infection-fighting antibodies. In addition to supporting effective immune functioning, Dr. Shah adds that quality sleep is important during Ramadan as it regulates the hormones that control appetite, and lack of sleep could make fasting more challenging. He advises that to get a sufficient amount of quality sleep for optimal functioning, consistency in sleep schedules is key. “Whether you are sticking to your regular daytime schedule during Ramadan, or adapting it in accordance with mealtimes, or even staying awake at night and sleeping during the day, it is important to try to go 18

to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time every day. This will help regulate your circadian rhythms, or internal body clock, and encourage restorative sleep,” he says. For those people who choose to divide their sleep into a number of sessions, he advises that they should make sure there is at least one consistent longer block of continuous sleep that is at least five or six hours long. For those who turn night into day, his additional advice is that at the end of Ramadan, they should adjust back to their normal routine slowly, moving their bedtime and waking-up time by a few hours every day, so that their body clock can adjust more easily. Another factor that could influence quality of sleep during this specific Ramadan, according to Dr. Shah, is screen time as many countries have imposed partial or complete lockdowns, and are encouraging social distancing, so people will turn to screens for entertainment. “Looking at any screen that is backlit – whether it is a television, cellphone or tablet – can disrupt the body’s natural rhythms and suppress the release of sleep-regulating hormone melatonin,” he says. He suggests encouraging children – who could be looking at screens more often than usual during homeschooling – to try to find other forms of relaxing activity at night close to bedtime that does not involve screens. He emphasizes that both children and adults should at least aim to turn off their screens within an hour before going to bed, as part of a good sleep-hygiene routine. Other sleep hygiene factors conducive to sound sleep include ensuring an ambient temperature, a dark room and no noise.

Thank you for joining us for this interview.

Please introduce yourself to our readers.

Makeup and modeling.

My name is Salaam Abbas, I am a dentist, model, and a makeup artist born in Saudi Arabia and moved to Sudan and ever since I been traveling back and forth between them and Dubai.

Did you develop any new interest or hobby or learned a new skill during this time?

Right, it’s sort of impossible to avoid, but diving straight in – we were wondering how your professional life has been affected by the pandemic, the ongoing issues with coronavirus? As a result of this pandemic, contracts have been cancelled, the release of my makeup line has been postponed, the stress of survival and fear of the disease is overwhelming to a point where I can’t even concentrate on overcoming my goals for the time being.

What’s it like where you are? In Sudan, life is harder to some extent due to the increased poverty line and illiterate people who don’t even believe that there is pandemic yet and think all this quarantine is because of political issues. On the other hand, some people are actually keen to counsel and enlighten the citizens about the current situation which somehow makes us feel safer.

What's your favourite music/songs for the moment? Afrobeat and some old school music from the 90’s.

Any advice on staying sane & relatively positive through this situation? Learn to appreciate what you already have and do things that you always wanted to do but never found the time to do so. For example more reading.

What are you missing most about the outside world? The outside world itself, the feeling of safety, not worrying about wearing mask and gloves and sanitizing everything you buy and touch.

What 3 things could you not live without under lockdown?

Some days I’m actually hyped and it’s all about working out and photo shoots and skincare, while other days it’s literally all about Netflix.

Sanitizers, skin care, and snacks that would last through out to help increase my serotonin level.

On the contrary, I believe I’m dealing with it just fine. Bonding more with the family and having quality time with them is just what I needed.

What are the important lessons you have learned during this time? The most important lesson I have learned is to appreciate everything. I do mean everything even the most boring routines we used to have in our daily basis. Life is too short, we should not stress over everything in life and enjoy living as long as we have our loved ones by our side and our health ofcourse. Health is literally a blessing and I’m so grateful for it. The importance of talking to friends every day and human connection is crucial. Also that the Doctors and researchers need to be paid better.

What are you doing now that’s ultimately constructive to your life and/or career? Thats a lot of things could be done in home not the old way.

MAY 2020

More makeup and modeling and dancing skills I chose to perfect the skills I have.

What does an average day look like for you under lockdown?

How are you dealing with this sudden change in lifestyle?

24

What’s the most surprising thing you’ve realized during this period of social distancing?

What are you most looking forward to doing once the lockdown is over? Travelling! I was supposed to start a new life in Dubai and the releasing of my makeup line. Both got postponed due to the lockdown.

How do you think life will be after Covid-19? I think people will be more hygienic. For example now we have developed the habit of washing our hands a lot. So, definitely this will not stop as soon as the pandemic is over. Traveling won’t be as easy as it was before. People will start appreciating each other more and will be motivated to achieve their goals faster because life can end in a glimpse of an eye.

Finally, your message for us at CP magazine. First of all, it’s my pleasure to participate with your magazine and for all the readers here are some things that I would like to tell you. Learn as much as you can from this lockdown because this time you have now will never be again. You should be willing to trade some of your freedom for the greater good of the public.

FEBRUARY MAY 2020 2020

Right, it’s sort of impossible to avoid, but diving straight in – we were wondering how your professional life has been affected by the pandemic, the ongoing issues with coronavirus? Professional life is seeing drastic changes, as it has shifted to the virtual world altogether. Digital technology has definitely helped in converting inperson meetings to virtual meetings. The charm of face to face meetings and conversations is missing from virtual meet-ups, but safety first. We have to embrace this new change. I do miss going on a shoot and events and hope that we can all step out into the new normal soon!

What’s it like where you are? It’s super quiet as everyone is homebound and it is the government's orders to not leave the house unless on essential business. At first it was a welcome change to slow down, but now i feel we are all ready to take up our used speed of life again! In Australia we will be able to open up slowly starting this week. Thankfully due to everyone staying home the number of infections of Covid19 has come down a lot.

What does an average day look like for you under lockdown? My daily schedule is a jumble of work and home commitments. I have been keeping myself busy with work. I feel this is the best time to indulge with activities that make us happy. Most of my time I spent with my family and due to this lockdown I am able to get back to gardening and have been growing my own vegetables in the garden. I also do miss my team in India a lot, so we connect virtually almost every day. I’ve discovered that this is the best time for me to dedicate myself to scriptwriting!

How are you dealing with this sudden change in lifestyle? Life, in general, has been reduced to having a cautious approach until the threat of the pandemic goes away. Lifestyle is changing and is going more digital. Each one of us has to adapt to the new lifestyle as we all are sailing in the same boat. It’s all about strengthening your immunity now and moving forward into the new normal.

What are the important lessons you have learned during this time? We need love. We need care. We need a community. I know it’s hard to be isolated. But this is not solitary confinement. It’s simply staying at home. So make sure you call your family and friends, set yourself a new routine, and stick to it.

What are you doing now that’s ultimately constructive to your life and/ or career? For now, we are expanding Covid19 relief efforts with my non-profit organization, Seams For Dreams. I’m also planning to take my creative agency WIP Creatives to the next level! As part of our mission is to help aspiring talent and start-up brands, we have been offering workshops at our office, but with the current worldwide lockdown, we are looking for the best ways to continue this mission online. Our network of friends and industry experts have joined hands with us to prepare to engage online sessions, with answers that burn on every entrepreneur and influencer’s heart right now. So make sure to check out both these two websites www.SeamsForDreams.com and www.WIPCreatives.com or simply browse through www.EvelynSharma.com!

What’s the most surprising thing you’ve realized during this period of social distancing? The most surprising thing I’ve realized during this period is we can connect virtually with our close ones all over the world. Social distancing is for our own good but it may get boring at times. I think the key is to plan your day well and get into a routine. Start with your daily chores for small moments of success like doing the dishes and making your bed. Finally, take out some time for new hobbies, read a book, or learn something new in an online class. And spend time with your family and friends. If you can’t do it in person, call them up! www.cpmagazine.net

29

Did you develop any new interest or hobby or learn a new skill during this time? Lockdown has really helped me to work on my hobbies at this time, I always wanted to learn about gardening and to have my own garden which I was not able to do earlier in my busy schedule with the shoot. I am loving to maintain my little garden which I have in Australia. It gives me so much happiness to see the seeds I've sown grow each day. I’m becoming a specialist in growing chilies because my fiance Tushaan loves chilies in every meal! We need to grow more! I also often find myself reading. It is the best way to keep your mind from idling away.

What income-producing work have you lost due to the pandemic? Of course, live-events is a thing of the past right now! I miss performing at weddings and other fun events! For us entertainers this is not only the best part of our job, in a way, this is also our bread and butter.

What's your favorite music/song at the moment? My favorite music genre besides Bollywood music is reggaeton and Latin music. It always gets me shaking my booty into a good mood!

Any advice on staying sane & relatively positive through this situation? I think it is necessary for all of us to stay positive during this time and hope for the best. Our lifestyle earlier this year was quite busy and hustling. This is the perfect time to get a new hobby that was left behind or come up with new business ideas. This is the time we can plan and organize our things for the future since we won’t get enough time to plan as we go back to our normal life. “Let’s cherish and enjoy our time together”.

What 3 things could you not live without under lockdown? My fiance Tushaan Bhindi, my garden, and my mobile which helps me to stay connected with my loved ones and my team in India.

What are you missing most about the outside world? I am missing Germany, my home town, and of course India a lot, especially Mumbai where I have been living for the last 10 years. I’m missing colorful vibes of the city and my fans. How can I forget to mention, shooting for movies, which I loved the most!

What are you most looking forward to doing once the lockdown is over? Looking forward to getting back to India and start shooting for my upcoming comedy movie. I am also looking forward to meeting my dog Bhucki and cat Luii who is eagerly waiting for me to come back to give them a big snuggle. I’m glad they have found a new home with my dear friends in Mumbai!

How do you think life will be after Covid-19? I don’t think anyone of us would have the correct answer to it since each of us is going through this pandemic for the first time. I often wonder if things will ever be the same as they were before this pandemic. While I can’t be certain, I imagine they won’t. One of my hopes is that we as a human race will reevaluate the life we used to live and prioritize what is important, such as quality time with family and friends. I can’t recall how many weeks we’ve been enduring physical distancing unless I actually sit down to think about it. The days seem to blur together, and the time at home seems similar today to what it was yesterday, and to the days before that. I feel it will be more of a virtual world. And of course, I hope everyone will commit to a more sustainable future! This is a chance for us to start again, so let’s do this right!

Finally, your message for us at CP magazine. Stay Safe & Stay Home!

MAINTAINING A POSITIVE ATTITUDE IN TIMES OF COVID -19 LOCKDOWN: TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS AT CLINIQUE LA PRAIRIE

W

ith the current pandemic forcing us into necessary isolation, anxiety and stress have become an everyday norm. On top of that remote working, reduced work hours and in some cases, loss of income, along with uncertainty are indeed stressful. Regulating and learning to control your emotions at such times is very important, to help remain positive and improve both mental and physical health and wellbeing. World-renowned spa & medical clinic in Switzerland, Clinique La Prairie believes in a holistic philosophy that enriches your mind, body and soul to protect yourself. While it may seem a challenge to stay focused and positive without fear and anxiety taking over at this time, Dr. Mounir Ziade, Resident Doctor and medical expert has tips on how to ease those feelings: Slow Living With the current lockdown situation and scary news popping up every minute, it has become even more imperative to unplug and calm your mind. When your body is stressed it lowers your immunity and can make you feel tired, sick, sleepless and anxious. Embrace the new reality and schedule your day to disconnect and be more present. Following a daily schedule of tasks and staying on top of them may help you stay more focussed and manage your stress in a disciplined manner. Organise the balance between intellectual and physical activities, as well as being alone and being in social contact. Being alone does also mean "being with yourself in the present time". Yoga, Qigong, autohypnosis and self-reflection are a great way to this, and to keep your stress under control. In the framework of this balance, connecting with others and staying in touch with loved ones can help you feel grounded. Social connections can not only improve your overall wellbeing but also strengthen your immune system. Try intentionally building in moments of connection to your day – hopefully technology has plenty of means to offer for that while keeping the safety measures of social distancing. Find a sense of serenity Your mind is like your stomach – you are what you eat and think. While venting your thoughts and concerns is normal in these unprecedented moments in life, it is essential to give yourself a chance to be distracted from sources of anxiety, like constant news about the pandemic. Let humor and imagination into your life to make yourself more resilient. It helps reduce anxiety and emotional stress and it will modify and soften what you will recall in your memory later. Spend your time wisely and focus on all the activities you have always wanted to do but did not have time for. Learn a new hobby, cook a new healthy creative dish or take up a new online course. 36

MAY 2020

There also also benefits of practicing gratitude. Show appreciation for your family and friends and for your good health. Finding gratitude even in challenging days, sometimes thinking about difficult situations, can help to overcome it. It helps in creating an experience with more positive emotions, contributing to sleep better and enhancing your health. Meditation guide When you are unable to control your emotions easily, your mind may feel trapped in fear as you are unable to allow the energy of these emotions to move away. This is where meditative practices can be helpful: observing your thoughts and feeling the sensations within you allow you to create distance between you and your overwhelming emotions. This empowers you to clarify your mind and to gain ability to release the over-emotions stuck in your body by allowing feelings to somehow exist peacefully out of your body. When you feel highly emotional, start to breathe in and out slowly and deeply (5 seconds each) for at least 5 minutes. Use this slow breathing technique whenever required and gradually you will notice harmony is restored. Sleep well Napping for longer than 20 minutes a day, along with the lack of exercise and eating heavy meals just before bedtime is a recipe of disaster, especially for your sleep cycle. Irregular and poor sleep can have a toll on your mood and health and can even lead to depression. Basics are fundamental to promote sleep. Have a light dinner and keep your healthy diet on track. Try to follow a daily routine where you wake up and sleep at the same time every day. Avoid stressful activities and screens before you go to bed and try to break the thinking patterns that lead to discomfort, anxiety and distress (breathing techniques). Also, try to avoid consuming caffeinated beverages before bedtime to avoid unwanted alertness and difficulty in sleeping at night. For a good night’s sleep, use herbal infusions. Keep moving Doing some form of physical activity throughout the day benefits your physical health and immune system as well as helps deal with depression and anxiety. Push yourself to start with short home workout and slowly increase the intensity and duration. You can also use exercise as a means for bonding with your loved ones. This will get you the perks of feeling like you have a new routine and potentially a sweet boost of endorphins from the exercise, which has been proven to lower anxiety and help you sleep better too.

A little background on how this got started… “I am concerned about your health.” Those were the words that started the realization that I needed to change my life. Hearing this from a friend who had nothing but my best interests at heart was profound. I had long been overweight and in fact morbidly obese for over a decade and up to this point I had not cared about the unhealthy path I was at that time more than content to stay on. Here I was a person with two successful careers, but with all of the successes I was failing myself in regard to my health and well-being. I wasn’t happy. I allowed myself to be distracted by my careers, social media, films, video games, etc. and it showed. I stacked every excuse for myself, but that statement was my wake-up call. It was time to stop all of my excuses and start making a real change in my life. That is how FormerlyMe got started. FormerlyMe is not just a one-man army of me. It is also supported by Terry Thompson. Terry is a great life coach, motivational speaker, author, mentor, and leadership expert with over 23 years of knowledge and experience leading others to personal and professional success. You can see him guiding the movement and offering his “Minute Mindset” and other inspirational words of the week on both social media and the YouTube channel. You can find out more about Terry at TerryThompson.me.

Each month CP Magazine will showcase a part of my journey to becoming the best version of myself. I hope that in turn this inspires and motivates you to start your own journey as well. For this month’s story we will focus on the “Quarantine Workout Sessions” that FormerlyMe hosted during this COVID-19 pandemic. Since the entire world went under quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic, FormerlyMe wanted to give the world the ability to do workouts from the comfort of their own home with a personal trainer. No equipment or weights needed! This would be so helpful as all gyms and fitness centers had to close. People and families stuck at home bored and fitness is so essential to well being and health. We had to find a way to maintain and stay healthy while maintaining social distancing and shelter in place. Plus it gives people the ability to workout with a personal trainer if they have never done so before. Not to mention you can pause and replay as many times as you want to. I reached out to my Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Trainer, Taylor Hickman, to be our featured trainer for these online sessions. Taylor Hickman is the 71st ranked of 242 active US Southwest Amateur Lightweights, and also ranked at Welterweight www.cpmagazine.net

Cobblers Cove in Barbados is a family owned hotel which was originally a plantation house, combining the charm of an English country house with Bajan style and character. The hotel is set in its own tropical gardens overlooking a white sandy, palm fringed beach on the northwest coast of the island, located within walking distance of Speightstown with its cafes, small museum and church. The property has unveiled a dramatic new look last months following a five-year programme. The refurbishment of the all-suite hotel was overseen by the watchful eye of Sam de Teran who has transformed this iconic property into one of the chicest places to stay in the Caribbean. The final chapter of this story is the unique collaboration with leading designer Soane Britain. The ongoing work has seen the transformation of all the suites, guest areas, swimming pool and pavilion while retaining the heritage, charm and character the hotel is best known for. The powder pink exteriors with its pretty white woodwork are complemented inside with elegant shades of blue, pink and green, hand printed linens and rattan furniture. 42

MAY 2020

The final stages of this design story reflect the synergy between Cobblers Cove and Soane Britain including their dedication to local craftsmanship, originality, comfort, charm and old school elegance. A first of its kind for both brands, this partnership has given an exquisite new look to the plantation era Great House and a style quite unlike anything else in the Caribbean. Lulu Lytle, Founder and Creative Director of Soane, has created specific pieces in new colours for the Great House and its honeymoon suites. Drawing inspiration from the history of the building, the island and from the fauna of the much-loved gardens, delicate and intricately woven rattan and glorious hand-printed fabrics have lifted its dĂŠcor to a new height of sophistication, deepening the irresistible charm of the hotel. Think fern-inspired console tables, shell-shaped chaises, crisp white rattan day beds, glimmering silver and glass hurricane lanterns, ripple skirted tables, twinkling basketwork lanterns, and fabulous gauzy billowing curtains printed with parrots and climbing vines.

Claiming one-quarter mile of white sand beach, Cobblers Cove is encompassed by lush and scented tropical gardens. Forty cottage suites are spread around the plantation-era Great House. Spacious sitting rooms open onto deep and private verandas with views over the gardens or sea. The two honeymoon suites in the Great House, refurbished by Soane, are the quintessence of Caribbean character, grace and charm, with hand woven grass carpets, four-poster beds, historical island prints, botanical drawings, basketwork lamps and views directly over the sea. www.cpmagazine.net

WRITING MOVIE

WRONGS moviewrongs.com by: JIM WEST

THE GENTLEMEN Directed by Guy Ritchie | Written by Guy Ritchie, Ivan Atkinson, and Marn Davies

S

lick crime films with all the British flair possible has always been Guy Ritchie’s forte as a director. With this film he brings his usual flair but infuses this story with just enough intriguing twists and turns that you are truly surprised by the end, and just want to watch the story even longer. I am a huge fan of Snatch (2000), Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels (1998), and even his Sherlock Holmes films (2009 & 2011) he did extremely well. This film will easily be considered one of his best. With this film they get the story and pacing right, and therefore this is a Writing a Movie ‘RIGHT’ review. Here come the spoilers.

Opening with a bang, The Gentlemen shows us our main protagonist of Mickey Pearson (Matthew McConaughey) as he is shot in the head at a pub. We jump back to the past so we know we are watching events that will lead us up to this fate. Mickey want to sell his business to Matthew Berger and retire with his wife Rosalind. Matthew tries to sabotage Mickey’s operations to lower the value of the deal. A private investigator named Fletcher, played wonderfully by Hugh Grant, visits Mickey’s right-hand man, Raymond (Charlie Hunnam), to try to sell what he knows of Mickey for a large sum of money. Most of the film’s narrative is told from Fletcher’s point of view with Raymond correcting some of the missed details along the way. 46

MAY 2020

A mix of characters enter the story with Chinese Drug Boss Lord George, his underboss Dry Eye (Henry Golding), Coach (Colin Farrell), a Royal Duke, Tabloid Editor named Big Dave, and more punch up a very nicely layered story. These characters are all given just the right amount of setup and time to let them be effective in the overall narrative. As the story weaves and weaves towards catching us up to the present moment where our film first started at, we get the reveal that Mickey is not dead. Now the film takes us on a fast track for a second climax which is where the director brilliantly surprises us with a second climax. Mickey reveals to Berger that he knows he was behind everything and he will complete their deal and pay in flesh as well. As Mickey leaves a loose story end comes to the surface and we get a double ambush with a slight cliffhanger ending where we cut to Fletcher pitching the story as a film idea. Very meta on the writer’s behalf. Simply brilliant writing on display here. Solid storylines and interesting and unique characters make this film one that begs to be watched again and again. Take note writers that this is the kind of layered storytelling that all films should aspire to. Guy Ritchie has once again shown us his flair and storytelling brilliance and I for one look forward to what he does next. Thanks for reading ‘Writing Movie ‘WRONGS’.

Pottery and ceramics have been experiencing a boom for some time now that has brought back traditional craftsmanship but, in many cases, with a modern and interesting twist. It’s a trend that has given ceramic objects new life and a place in our contemporary lifestyle. Having grown up in an environment out of the design industry, Soledad Berrocoso believes that her career path as a ceramic designer wasn’t a choice, it was always there, waiting to be discovered. Originally from Madrid, Spain, Soledad, is predominantly a self-taught artist who has always been heavily inspired by nature, solid and plane geometry and the emotion through metaphors and paradoxes. Earth, soul and life. The three words describe easily the work of this awardwinning ceramic-designer. Her ceramics are characterized by endearing imperfections and softly misshapen forms. Soledad enhances the rustic appeal of the traditional craft through washes of color glaze, inviting drips and uneven brush strokes to grace each object’s surface. Her name has become synonymous with a line of natureinspired sculptures and objects made from various colored clays that she combines to develop soft, marbled swirls. As those experienced in the rigurous (and tedious) processes of ceramics can attest to, each piece takes patience, care, www.cpmagazine.net

and time – seven to ten days alone for a piece, for example, to allow for drying and firing. There are many steps to crafting ceramics: throwing, trimming, glazing among others. She cannot point out just one. Soledad loves the whole process, the transformation that happens after the firing, it is pretty magical for her. She loves watching something so soft flow into her idea/thought/creativity and become a hard object that lasts for a very long time. That fascinates her. However she highlights the raku pottery, an incredible ancient Japanese ceramics technique that has been used for centuries, originally to make tea pots. For potters, it´s an exciting technique, as there’s always the anticipation of how each piece may turn out with so many different variables. At first glance, each piece looks like a conceptual sculpture. And the colour is such a powerful thing. For her early work, Soledad used more traditional glazes that were very earthy and raw. Currently, and depending on the piece, she finds the blue palette made with cobalt oxide very relevant her state-of-the-art ceramic design. www.cpmagazine.net

GET RAMADAN READY WITH FENTY BEAUTY AND PRISCILLA ONO Keep your skin hydrated and achieve your inner glow this Ramadan with these beauty tips from Fenty Beauty’s Global Makeup Artist, Priscilla Ono.

1.Hydrate: Water is your best friend. Try to stay away from drinks

heavy in caffeine, that may dehydrate you and instead drink plenty of water to keep your skin looking radiant and flawless!

2.Moisturize Skin: Your skin can easily lose moisture and get dehydrated while fasting, so always remember to moisturize. I love the gel texture of the Pro Filt’r Hydrating Primer because it’s super lightweight and plumps and blurs the skin for instant hydration, that makes your skin radiant and dewy. The fastabsorbing formula feels silky-smooth and melts into the skin, for that extra pick me up, but without the makeup!

3.Exfoliate Lips: Lips are one of the first places to show signs

dehydration and fatigue, so you want to make sure you exfoliate your lips often to get rid of dry dead skin. Fenty Beauty’s LipLoving Scrubstick easily exfoliates lips with just a few swipes. I love that this lip scrub is in a convenient stick component, so I can easily exfoliate on the go and without the mess. After exfoliating, it’s important to moisturize the lips with Fenty Beauty’s Luscious Lip Balm to smoothen and nourish them. This combo makes my lips so soft and hydrated!

4.Get that Glow: Your skin can easily lose hydration throughout the day, and a little trick that I love to help replenish hydration is spritzing my face with the What It Dew Refreshing Spray. It instantly revives the skin by hydrating with herbal extracts, plus the scent is so refreshing and soothing – it’s the perfect pick me up!

One of the remarkable collection is “The Museum Collection” - it’s the joyful collaboration with Amanda Johnson Studio which is located in Delray Beach, USA. Amanda James made one of a kind textiles for Caryn at Coast & Koi. And we will be asking Caryn Wilensky about the way she created those unique shoes.

58

MAY 2020

Where do all the ideas for the unique shoes come from? And are you ever tired of designing new ones?

I believe in the power of ancestors, personal guides and muses. As long as I am ‘tapped in’, inspiration can come from anywhere. I am careful not to disturb my daydreams - they can often be very productive! I can be going about my day and something will catch my eye – a fabric or design fragment – a visual seed. Only later, I will find I have an idea for a shoe that has taken shape around that seed. Of course, it helps when you live somewhere as visually rich as South Africa. I believe there is a fashion zeitgeist that steers the direction of trends. I am grateful that every now and then my muses have pointed me in that direction.

Coast & Koi is inspired by African renaissance. What does that mean for the design?

I believe it is Africa’s turn. The narrative of ‘Africa Rising’ might have run its course when it comes to world politics, but definitely not when it comes to fashion. Having worked as a fashion buyer abroad, I can confidently say that interest in Africa has never been stronger. The search for an untapped frontier is not new in fashion, but recently that attention has turned to Africa. However, designers often have a very narrow concept of what Africa is, limiting themselves to what is essentially a stereotype. Visual examples of this might be leopard print or a very obviously tribal pattern. I experience this when people comment on my shoes as being ‘very Eurocentric’, simply because they do not conform to that stereotype. When you can reframe your concept of Africa as being the origin-point for all human development, then it makes sense that other cultural influences would be part of that African whole. Also historically, everything is of Africa. The earliest trade routes all passed through here, so it stands to reason that vestiges of other cultures (Indian or Asian for example) would remain here and find their way into my work. Yes, my work may be eclectic, but when I think of Indo-African design I am not thinking of India, I am relating to the Indian strand within Africa. I see my role as broadening that narrow concept of what Africa is. Dissolving the stereotype – that’s the real work of renaissance! Through my brand, I hope people come to appreciate a conception of Africa beyond the stereotype, because really it’s more interesting with all its nuances and complexity.

The Museum Collection looks so gorgeous please tell us more about it and what is Babouche footwear?

The Museum Collection is a handcrafted collection of bespoke Babouche footwear. We collaborated with Amanda Johnson Studio, located in Delray Beach, Florida. Amanda and I are happy to share with you, The Museum Collection, a very special collection of Babouche footwear. The collection is made of custom printed luxurious silks, satin’s and linens derived from Amanda Johnson Studio original paintings. Babouche footwear is a type of footwear that originally hails from the Middle East where they were worn by both women and men. The babouches, which are popular with fashion enthusiasts, do not curl at the toe like the medieval footwear designs that are commonplace in Marrakesh souks. Babouches were often decorated for weddings, feast days, special occasions, and other special occasions with embroidery knots, tassels, sequins, and patterns. This collaboration is not about mass production, but rather about classic elegance, unique design and individual style.

Who are your clients – is it more tourists or locals from Cape Town?

In the past it has been mostly tourists from within South Africa. But lately, more and more interest has come from the internet, both for personal orders as well as retail partnerships.

Where are the shoes sold, online as well as in store?

Yes, both avenues. I have several retail stockists locally, as well as a whole host of orders I am now fulfilling for retailers abroad. Coast and Koi is definitely on the move! www.cpmagazine.net

INTRODUCING MASK MEE Launched to Help the Community Stay Safe and Comfortable

64

MAY 2020

A

s we navigate our way through the current COVID-19 pandemic, staying safe is at the forefront of everyone’s minds. The outside world is a little uncertain at the moment and can feel overwhelming when stepping out for grocery shopping and other essentials. Newly launched Mask Mee is here to help you and the UAE community feel a little more protected and comfortable, ensuring you can keep going in this ‘new normal’, whilst keeping reserves of medical grade face masks for the people who need them most; our Healthcare Heroes. It is vitally important that we keep this medical-grade equipment readily available for those on the front line, but also keeping ourselves as safe as possible when we are out in public too. Mask Mee was created to provide wearers with the best protection possible, whilst making sure you are both comfortable and stylish at the same time. The masks have a double layer and are fitted to your face shape, unlike other masks. They also boast being environmentally responsible as you can wear your mask and wash it easily afterwards by hand or in the washing machine. The mask can then be dried in direct sunlight or in a dryer, taking just minutes and eliminating the need for disposable masks which have a negative impact on the environment. Reusable and made from a cotton and polyester mix in numerous colours and designs to match your own unique style, Mask Mee masks also have insertable filter capability plus 29 designs for women and 5 for men to choose from. You can rest assured knowing both your safety and style are top of the game. The brand specialises in comfortable, fitted designs with two sizes for men and women. They also don’t use elastic over the ears, which can prove to be painful with prolonged use. To keep a sense of community and togetherness, and as companies begin to return to work, Mask Mee masks can also be customised to your own brand with your logo added to the masks. Mask Mee are also working to help those who don’t have access to masks and proper protection and shall be contributing a percentage of their sales towards masks for those in the community who really need it. Mask Mee is a socially responsible, yet stylish way to help avoid the spread of viruses. It is also one of the best non-surgical grade forms of protection. As a responsible business, Mask Mee would never completely guarantee that their mask will stop you contracting COVID-19, however, along with proper hygiene practices and social distancing you can be sure that Mask Mee is one of your best lines of defense. Mask Mee masks are priced at AED85. To find out more about Mask Mee and order your own, visit www.mask-mee.com and stay up to date on their designs and developments via their Instagram page @maskmeeofficial. HAVE A FAMILY FUN NIGHT WITH GENERAL MOTORS Most of us have been social distancing and isolating for a while now. It seems like it should be a great opportunity to bond with your family, spend more time with your spouse and catch up on all the hobbies and DIY projects you want to do at home. But let’s be honest – quarantine is starting to feel never-ending. What we all thought would be a couple of weeks has turned into months and we aren’t sure how much longer we will have to quarantine.

S

o, here are a few fun family activities that you can do in your car, right in your driveway.

Have a car wash – washing the car doesn’t have to be a

l

chore. Get the whole family involved, assign everyone a task, turn the hose on your loved ones and have a blast!

Car karaoke – use the infotainment system and a tablet to

l

stream some family-friendly tunes, with lyrics, so everyone can sing along. Take turns and judge each other’s performance to add a little family-friendly competition to the fun. For memories that will last a lifetime, film each performance.

Create a home photo or video booth – take your Instagram, GIF, meme and Tik Tok game to the next level by turning your car into a family photo or video booth. Bring along some props, costumes and backdrops to create some epic images. And if you are creating videos, use the infotainment system to play your favorite songs to pair perfectly with your home videos. You can even use this opportunity to create some photo and video memories to document this unprecedented time in your lives and keep them to look back on later.

l

lHave a game night – there are dozens of classic car games. Whilst they are traditionally used to pass the time on long family road trips, these car games can be fun even while in park. I Spy – one player is a spy who chooses an object within sight and announces to the other players that "I spy with my little eye, something beginning with...", naming the first letter of the object. Other players attempt to guess this object. Name that Tune – someone picks a song and starts humming p

p

66

MAY 2020

or singing it. Then the other players try to guess which song it is. Instead of singing or humming, you can play songs from the radio or infotainment system for the players to guess. Who Am I? – bring along some post-its and some pens. Pick one name for each player – it can be a celebrity, cartoon or historical figure, etc. and stick the name on each person’s forehead or back. Don’t let the person see the name they are given. Every player gets 20 “yes” or “no” questions to guess who they are. Mix & Match stories / Pass the Story – bring a ball and give it to one player to start. The person with the ball begins to tell a story, sharing one sentence. Then they pass the ball and story to the next person who continues it. Each player must leave the story on a cliffhanger for the next player to build on until the story feels complete. 20 questions – a player starts the game by choosing a “person”, “place” or “thing” and telling the other players the category. The other players then have 20 questions (total) to guess what the starting player is thinking of. Memory Game – the first player starts by saying, “I’m going out on a picnic and I’m bringing…” and then names an item that comes to mind. Then the next player has to remember that item and add something else to the story. Get a part of the story wrong and you’re out. p

Tell us about this new book you have. This is a romance novel?

Of course! I was just so intrigued at your answer. So how can people find out more about this and other works by you?

Yes. ECHO is my first romance novel that is set in the mid 90’s. In fact the music of that era pays a major role in the story as it is set weeks before Kurt Cobain’s death.

People can visit my website at www.JimWestAuthor.com or find ECHO on Amazon or other online bookstores.

Romance means many things to different people. What does romance mean to you and what is the style of romance in this book?

Thank you, Jim, for joining CP Magazine for this interview and wish you the best. Thank you and your readers!

I believe in all aspects of love from infatuation to unconditional. Romance is the actions of love. The things we do for love and because of it. As for the style of romance in this book, it is more like something you would see in the cinema or on a TV romantic movie. It is not the risqué style of romance which most people tend to think about.

You mentioned the cinema? Is the story a kind that could be a film in the cinema? Definitely. I wrote the story and characters with the mindset of it being a film.

The cover has the name Melissa Riggio. Did she also write this book? Yes. Melissa Riggio is my co-author. The story and characters are my creation, and she helped write the book in regard to the romantic scenes and dialogue.

Interesting. How was the experience in writing this with another author like? I can imagine it could be difficult. Not at all. It was a joy to work with Melissa, and so easy to collaborate on the work. Wonderful. Tell us a bit about what the story is in ECHO. ECHO is about a man who has been separated for years form his wife and finally getting a divorce. He has a accident at work which leaves him with temporary amnesia and he thinks he is five years younger than he is. The younger version of himself is a much more positive and ambitious person than the person he is. This “new” younger self wants to make his life better and then falls in love with a woman. He tries desperately to hold unto this new life and new memories all the while knowing one day it can all disappear when his memories return from the amnesia going away.

The book cover has such a beautiful sentence. “The mind may forget but the heart always remembers.” Can you elaborate on the meaning? I feel that memories are connected with our emotions. We can remember the happiest days and our saddest moments in life easily because of this connection of emotion and memory. Yet when the mind forgets in the case of amnesia can the heart remember is the main struggle the character faces in the story.

How does that end? (laughing) well that is where people will have to read to find out! www.cpmagazine.net

All Adults Here

Weird but Normal: Essays

The Hilarious World of Depression

The Price of Peace: Money, Democracy, and the Life of John Maynard Keynes

When Astrid Strick witnesses a school bus accident in the center of town, it jostles loose a repressed memory from her young parenting days decades earlier. Suddenly, Astrid realizes she was not quite the parent she thought she’d been to her three, now-grown children. But to what consequence? Astrid’s youngest son is drifting and unfocused, making parenting mistakes of his own. Her daughter is intentionally pregnant yet struggling to give up her own adolescence. And her eldest seems to measure his adult life according to standards no one else shares. But who gets to decide, so many years later, which long-ago lapses were the ones that mattered? Who decides which apologies really count? It might be that only Astrid’s thirteen-year-old granddaughter and her new friend really understand the courage it takes to tell the truth to the people you love the most. In All Adults Here, Emma Straub’s unique alchemy of wisdom, humor, and insight come together in a deeply satisfying story about adult siblings, aging parents, high school boyfriends, middle school mean girls, the lifelong effects of birth order, and all the other things that follow us into adulthood, whether we like them to or not.

Navigating racial identity, gender roles, workplace dynamics, and beauty standards, Mia Mercado's hilarious essay collection explores the contradictions of being a millennial woman, which usually means being kind of a weirdo. Whether it’s spending $30 on a candle that smells like an ocean that doesn’t exist, offering advice on how to ask about someone’s race (spoiler: just don’t, please?), quitting a job that makes you need shots of whiskey on your lunch break, or finding a more religious experience in the skincare aisle at Target than your hometown Catholic church, Mia brilliantly unpacks what it means to be a professional, absurdly beautiful, horny, cute, gross human. Essays include: •Depression Isn’t a Competition but Why Aren’t I Winning? •My Dog Explains My Weekly Schedule •Mustache Lady •White Friend Confessional •Treating Objects Like Women

For years John Moe, critically-acclaimed public radio personality and host of The Hilarious World of Depression podcast, struggled with depression; it plagued his family and claimed the life of his brother in 2007. As Moe came to terms with his own illness, he began to see similar patterns of behavior and coping mechanisms surfacing in conversations with others, including high-profile comedians who'd struggled with the disease. Moe saw that there was tremendous comfort and community in open dialogue about these shared experiences and that humor had a unique power. Thus was born the podcast The Hilarious World of Depression. Inspired by the immediate success of the podcast, Moe has written a remarkable investigation of the disease, part memoir of his own journey, part treasure trove of laugh-out-loud stories and insights drawn from years of interviews with some of the most brilliant minds facing similar challenges.

In the spring of 1934, Virginia Woolf sketched an affectionate biographical portrait of her great friend John Maynard Keynes. Writing a full two years before Keynes would revolutionize the economics world with the publication of The General Theory, Woolf nevertheless found herself unable to condense her friend's already-extraordinary life into anything less than twenty-five themes, which she jotted down at the opening of her homage: "Politics. Art. Dancing. Letters. Economics. Youth. The Future. Glands. Genealogies. Atlantis. Mortality. Religion. Cambridge. Eton. The Drama. Society. Truth. Pigs. Sussex. The History of England. America. Optimism. Stammer. Old Books. Hume." Keynes was not only an economist, as he is remembered today, but the preeminent anti-authoritarian thinker of the twentieth century, a man who devoted his life to the belief that art and ideas could conquer war and deprivation. A moral philosopher, political theorist, and statesman, Keynes immersed himself in a creative milieu filled with ballerinas and literary icons as he developed his own innovative and at times radical thought.

More Than Love: An Intimate Portrait of My Mother, Natalie Wood

Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes bestselling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast. They're polar opposites. In fact, the only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they're living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer's block. Until, one hazy evening, one thing leads to another and they strike a deal designed to force them out of their creative ruts: Augustus will spend the summer writing something happy, and January will pen the next Great American Novel. She'll take him on field trips worthy of any rom-com montage, and he'll take her to interview surviving members of a backwoods death cult (obviously). Everyone will finish a book and no one will fall in love. Really.

Paris between the wars teems with artists, writers, and musicians, a glittering crucible of genius. But amidst the dazzling creativity of the city’s most famous citizens, four regular people are each searching for something they’ve lost. Camille was the maid of Marcel Proust, and she has a secret: when she was asked to burn her employer’s notebooks, she saved one for herself. Now she is desperate to find it before her betrayal is revealed. Souren, an Armenian refugee, performs puppet shows for children that are nothing like the fairy tales they expect. Lovesick artist Guillaume is down on his luck and running from a debt he cannot repay—but when Gertrude Stein walks into his studio, he wonders if this is the day everything could change. And Jean-Paul is a journalist who tells other people’s stories, because his own is too painful to tell. When the quartet’s paths finally cross in an unforgettable climax, each discovers if they will find what they are looking for.

From the New York Times bestselling author of American Wife and Eligible, a novel that imagines a deeply compelling what-might-have-been: What if Hillary Rodham hadn’t married Bill Clinton? In 1971, Hillary Rodham is a young woman full of promise: Life magazine has covered her Wellesley commencement speech, she’s attending Yale Law School, and she’s on the forefront of student activism and the women’s rights movement. And then she meets Bill Clinton. A handsome, charismatic southerner and fellow law student, Bill is already planning his political career. In each other, the two find a profound intellectual, emotional, and physical connection that neither has previously experienced. In the real world, Hillary followed Bill back to Arkansas, and he proposed several times; although she said no more than once, as we all know, she eventually accepted and became Hillary Clinton.

More Than Love is a memoir of loss, grief, and comingof-age by a daughter of Hollywood royalty. Natasha Gregson Wagner’s mother, Natalie Wood, was a child actress who became a legendary movie star, the darkhaired beauty of Splendor in the Grass, Rebel Without a Cause, and West Side Story. She and Natasha’s stepfather, the actor Robert Wagner, were a Hollywood it-couple twice over, first in the 1950s, and then again when they remarried in the 70s. But Natalie’s sudden death by drowning off Catalina Island at the age of forty-three devastated her family, made her stepfather a person of interest, and turned a vibrant wife, mother, and actress into a tragic figure. The events of that weekend have long been a mystery, and despite the rumors, scandalous media coverage, and accusations of wrongdoing, there has never been an account of how the tragedy was experienced by her daughter. For the first time Natasha addresses the questions surrounding that night to clear her beloved stepfather’s name.

Like every year, Cartier celebrates the spirit of sharing and togetherness with a film dedicated to the Holy Month of Ramadan titled ‘A New Dawn’. Filmed in Saudi Arabia, The movie unites the Maison’s most iconic international cities around the world and welcomes them in AlUla, a crossroad of civilizations. Not only has AlUla been a center of cultural, artistic, technical and linguistic influences and ingenuity, but also a pilgrimage route linking Levant and Egypt with the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah. Once again, Cartier pays homage to its longstanding relationship with the region that goes back to 1912. Throughout Cartier’s history, a series of influential aesthetic encounters have shaped the Maison’s creative design and punctuated its stylistic development. This year is no different, as the production fosters a magical conversation spanning 150 years - transporting us to the past, savoring the present and looking ahead to the future of the Maison. Cartier’s history, style, heritage and iconic creations are showcased in the film, through reflections on the beautiful mirrored walls of Maraya*, a stunning centerpiece in the heart of AlUla. The film chronicles the essence of Cartier, as the Panthere begins her journey in Place Vendome in Paris, home to the Maison’s first temple opened by Louis Cartier in 1899. The audience is then transported to magical places from which Cartier draws its inspiration - London, New York, the Middle East and India, highlighting that Ramadan is not just a regional occasion, but also a universal one. The campaign narrates the Maison’s history through a mesmerizing parade of enchanted places and events. The Panthere reminds us that humanity’s challenges and hopes must once more reunite and follow her footsteps in search for a new Dawn and a better future. More than ever today, Cartier wants to send a message of solidarity and unity during this unprecedented time. The new Breitling Chronomat is truly an all-purpose sports watch, at home both on the red carpet and at the beach. Its features recall the classic namesake from the 1980s and make it instantly recognizable. The eye-catching Rouleaux bracelet with a butterfly clasp perfectly expresses Breitling’s modern-retro style, as does the signature rotating bezel with rider tabs. The new Chronomat celebrates a significant time in Breitling’s history while projecting a clear vision for the future. When the Breitling Chronomat was launched in 1984, it marked a welcome return to mechanical Swiss watches, which had all but disappeared when quartz watches dominated the marketplace in the 1970s. Inspired by the Frecce Tricolori watch, which had been developed and launched in 1983 in collaboration with the famed Italian aerial squadron of the same name, the Chronomat celebrated Breitling’s centenary in style and marked the return of the mechanical chronograph on which the brand had built its global reputation to its rightfully prominent place. This technical legacy, combined with particularly stylish design codes, made the Chronomat the ultimate sportchic watch of its era, an expression of aesthetics and confidence that made the chronograph “cool” again. While the Chronomat has long been established as the watch of choice for aviators, it also found a passionate following among people whose adventures took place not only in the air, but also on land and at sea – above and below the surface. In fact, its versatility added to its allure in the late 1980s and early 1990s as its tachymeter attracted the interest of Formula 1 teams, while its reversible rider tabs made it ideally suited to regattas. Today’s passionate and fashionable adventurers will certainly be equally drawn to the new Chronomat Collection, whose watches perfectly reflect Breitling’s commitment to creating authentic, everyday luxury for men and women of purpose, action, and style. The new Chronomat, redesigned in 2020 with some updated twists on the original, capitalizes on the watch’s signature design elements and spirit. Breitling CEO Georges Kern says: “The 1984 Chronomat occupies a very important place in our modern history. It was the watch that boldly proclaimed Breitling was staying absolutely true to its roots. When much of the industry focused their efforts and energies on quartz watches, the Chronomat reminded the world that Breitling had essentially invented the modern mechanical chronograph. The message resonated and the brand prospered. The Chronomat Collection is a fitting tribute to the amazing watch that, more than any other, put us back in touch with our heritage.” Breitling had used the name Chronomat for some of its 1940s watches, and, in those early days, the word was a portmanteau of “chronograph for mathematics”. The 1984 Chronomat expressed something different: “chronograph” and “automatic”, a name that called attention to the selfwinding mechanical movement powering the watch.

The world and your part of it have changed dramatically over the recent past. This month, as three planets station retrograde, life is shifting again, but this is a chance to slow down, catch your breath, and reevaluate. The sun is in Taurus for the first three weeks of May, highlighting your finances, close commitments, and self-esteem. As the Scorpio full moon aligns on May 7, the energy reaches a climax, bringing a powerful transformation in a financial situation and/or intimate relationship. You’re at the end of a cycle, but this is clearing the path for greater abundance and prosperity and a chance to bring a dream to life. This also sets in motion a series of developments over the course of the month. Saturn entered Aquarius at the end of March, testing friendships and limiting freedom. Now, Saturn stations retrograde in Aquarius on the tenth, and there’s a sense of walls coming down, bringing freedom and a chance to rebuild connections and bridges. Communication improves as Mercury enters Gemini the next day, bringing information, conversations, deeper understanding, and a chance to clear the air.

(April 20 - May 20)

TAURUS You’re in your element this month with the sun transiting your sign. But with three planets stationing retrograde, including your ruler Venus, expect major developments drawing you to reconsider your life, career, and direction. On May 4, the sun meets Mercury in Taurus, followed by the Scorpio full moon on the seventh, bringing a moment of truth and significant relationships to light. This is the end of a cycle, but it’s a chance to deepen connections that support your dreams and offer you the freedom and security you desire. Saturn stations retrograde on May 10, just as the sun connects with Neptune, bringing major professional developments. This will mean reevaluating your professional and personal goals and restructuring life to make room for your growing ambitions. On the eleventh, Mercury enters Gemini, followed by your ruler Venus turning retrograde the next day, highlighting a financial situation. But with Venus retrograde until June 24, this calls for a deeper reassessment of your recent choices, finances, relationships, and values. You’re worth twice as much as you think you are. You have a lot to offer. As you heal your selfesteem, you can attract what or who you desire.

(May 21 - June 20)

GEMINI The sun is in Taurus as you enter the month. This is the time of year when you go underground to rest, recharge, and rejuvenate before the sun enters your sign. This May, especially, there’s a sense of a domino effect of developments unfolding (on the surface and behind the scenes), asking you to dig deep as you search your soul. On May 4, the sun meets your ruling planet Mercury, bringing intuitive messages, insights, communications through your dreams, or perhaps inside information. Trust a hunch. As the Scorpio full moon aligns on the seventh, you’re at the end of a cycle at work, bringing changes in your routines, or there might be health issues calling for your attention. You don’t have all the answers, but you’re learning what you need to know. Take things a day at a time and your next steps can be revealed. On May 10, Saturn stations retrograde in Aquarius, bringing a change in direction or perhaps a detour. Don’t resent this. When one door closes, another opens. Keep an open mind and you can be shown a better way forward. This is an ideal time to reevaluate your long-term goals, allowing you to make the necessary course corrections.

(June 21 - July 22)

CANCER Life is evolving dramatically from the core. This month brings more shifts, but this is a chance to stabilize, restructure, integrate, and reevaluate before you move forward. Your friendships and connections are in focus as the sun moves through Taurus over the first three weeks of May. On May 4, the sun meets Mercury, followed by the Scorpio full moon three days later, bringing information and conversations with friends and revealing important truths. This is extremely fertile, creative, sexual, and romantic energy. You’re free to be yourself, be want what you want, love who you love, and express yourself, It’s okay to have a change of heart, but you have to be honest with yourself. On the tenth, Saturn stations retrograde in Aquarius, asking you to reexamine boundaries in financial and intimate commitments. What were your parents' values surrounding sex, money, marriage, and commitment? How are yours different? Know your limits, but be willing to lower your guard when necessary. This is a chance to realign with your values and restructure commitments so you can allow in the financial and emotional support, intimacy, and security you desire.

MAY 2020

The world has changed, and it’s changing again this month, but this is your test to be steadfast in the face of changing times. With the sun transiting Taurus for the first three weeks, you’re in the public eye and on top of your game professionally. On May 4, the sun meets Mercury, bringing important professional developments and opportunities. A situation peaks on the seventh, bringing to the forefront a domestic situation and matters surrounding your sense of security. Consciously rise above insecurities, release past baggage, and let go of what prevents you from reaching for your goals. On May 10, Saturn stations retrograde in Aquarius, drawing you to reassess boundaries in your relationships. In some cases, it might mean lowering your guard so you can allow in more of the support you need. Mercury enters Gemini on the eleventh, followed the next day by Mars entering Pisces and Venus turning retrograde in Gemini. You might have a conversation with a friend or learn information that shows you another side to a person or situation. But avoid jumping to conclusions and be patient. There’s more to the story.

(August 23 - September)

VIRGO Your daily life and routines have changed dramatically over the recent past, with little time and space for adjustment. But there are important shifts taking place this month, offering you a chance to slow down and restructure your life so it supports you and your goals. You're on a journey this month, whether metaphorically or literally, asking for awareness and humility. On May 4, the sun meets your ruler Mercury, shining a light on the path ahead. Three days later, the Scorpio full moon aligns in your communication sector, bringing life-changing conversations, information, and choices. This is a moment of truth, asking you to be honest with yourself above all. Keep sight of your long-term goals and you can make wise choices. On the tenth, Saturn stations retrograde in Aquarius, offering you a chance to restructure your life, routines, and habits so that you can build a life that supports you as much as it serves a greater purpose. Mercury enters Gemini on May 11, and Mars enters Pisces and Venus turns retrograde in Gemini the next day, heating up relationships and bringing career developments and opportunities.

(September 23 - October)

On May 4, the sun meets Mercury followed by the Scorpio full moon three days later, bringing matters to a head and information to light. This is the end of a chapter, but you have more to gain than lose, so avoid clinging to what’s changing. Saturn stations retrograde in Aquarius on the tenth, and there’s a sense that a heaviness that has plagued your heart recently is lifting. Work on mastering your art or craft, reconnect with yourself, and reevaluate boundaries surrounding love and sex. Life is changing and so are you. This is a chance to live more deeply in the moment and be conscious of what you are creating.

It might mean cutting back in some cases or perhaps learning that you have more breathing room than you think. But either way, this is a chance to dig beyond your bank balance and relationship status for your values and integrity and invest your energy in what truly matters. Mercury enters Gemini on May 11, and the next day Mars enters Pisces, your communication sector, followed by Venus turning retrograde in Gemini. This is a chance to reconsider your life, work, daily routines, and health, and invest in and prioritize your quality of life above all. You have one life to live, and you must have time to enjoy the life you work so hard for.

(January 20 - February 18)

AQUARIUS After all the recent upheaval, May brings a chance to stabilize and get grounded. The sun is in Taurus for the first three weeks of the month, highlighting home, family, and security matters. On May 4, the sun meets Mercury followed by the Scorpio full moon three days later, bringing a professional situation to light and marking the end of a cycle. You’re in a stable position to make the changes you’ve been contemplating and let go of any ambitions you’ve outgrown so you can create the space for change. Since Saturn entered Aquarius in late March, you’ve grown, matured, learned lessons, and shown your resilience in the face of adversity. On the tenth, Saturn stations retrograde in Aquarius, and it will reenter Capricorn on July 1, marking a period of inner restructuring, reclaiming authority and responsibility, rebuilding your identity, and dismantling self-imposed limitations that prevent you from being all you can be. On May 12, Mars enters Pisces, highlighting a financial situation, your closest commitments, and your values. On the same day, Venus stations retrograde in Gemini, drawing you to reconnect with your creativity, heart, innocence, and inner child.

(February 19 - March 20)

PISCES Life has taken a dramatic turn over the recent past, and now, as you enter May, the sun is in Taurus and lighting your communication sector, bringing important information to light. On May 4, the sun meets Mercury, followed by the Scorpio full moon three days later, revealing the road ahead. Expect to have at least one important conversation with a partner or learn something that brings you to a moment of truth. Be open-minded, keep your perspective, and you can learn what you need to know. Saturn entered Aquarius at the end of March, drawing you inward for a deeper soul search. Now, Saturn stations retrograde on the tenth, asking you to dig deeper for the meaning of your existence. This is an ideal time to develop your spiritual and meditation practices, which will ground you in a greater unchanging reality as the world around you turns. On May 12, action planet Mars enters your sign, and remains so until June 30, firing you up with passion. Also on that day, Venus stations retrograde in Gemini, drawing you on a deeper journey into the (recent and distant) past and revealing treasures beneath your feet.
