y niece, my sister’s oldest daughter, has always had the most beautiful red hair.

Long, thick and glossy, it’s been the envy of many since she was a small child. Its rich, amber tones and lustrous shine ensure a string of compliments wherever she goes. In fact, it’s exactly the kind of hair you see in shampoo advertising campaigns. So imagine my surprise when she cut it all off!

But it wasn’t teenage boredom that led to such 14

drastic action. Nor was it the wish of a 15-year-old girl to be more like her friends, or to imitate her favourite pop idol. No, it was the selfless desire to help others less fortunate than herself.

The Little Princess Trust is a charity providing real hair wigs for children suffering with hair loss. It was established in 2006 by the parents of a little girl, Hannah Tarplee, who died after being diagnosed with a Wilms tumour. The treatment she received before tragically losing her life resulted in the loss of her hair

weird colour!

Here’s what you need to do to donate your hair to the Little Princess Trust: lWash and dry your hair lDo not add conditioner or styling products lPut your hair in a plait lSecure at both ends with an elastic band lAsk your hairdresser to cut above the band nearest your head lPut the dry plait into a clear re-sealable plastic bag lPut it in a padded envelope and send it to: Little Princess Trust Broadway House 32-35 Broad Street Hereford HR4 9AR UK The charity does accept donations from outside the UK and, if you print and complete the donation slip from their website and enclose it with your hair, they will send a certificate by e-mail thanking you for your generous gift.

All good condition hair is sent by the charity to their wig manufacturer in China. This is where your donation is transformed into a high quality wig, giving a sick child something to smile about and making them look and feel like a prince or princess.

By donating your hair to the Little Princess Trust you’ll be following the example, not just of my wonderful niece, but of chart-topper Jessie J, who famously shaved her head in 2013 to support the charity.

Obviously, you don’t need to take such drastic action as shaving your head - just cutting it will suffice!

My niece doesn’t regret cutting her hair one little bit. Not only is she now sporting a trendy, more sophisticated hair style, she also has the satisfaction of knowing that 18 inches of her beautiful, healthy hair is now on its way to lighting up the life of a child which, as you can imagine, is pretty traumatic for a five-year-old with far more to worry about than a haircut. Well girl. Unfortunately, at that time, it was incredibly difficult to find done Gracie Kruse, I’m so proud of you! quality wigs for young children.

After her death, Hannah’s parents decided to set up a charity dedicated to providing specialist real hair wigs for children. Since To find out more visit www.littleprincess.org.uk then, the charity has helped thousands of boys and girls in the UK and Ireland look and feel ‘normal’ after losing their own hair #littleprincesstrust as a result of cancer treatment or other illnesses.

To date, they have donated 5,000 real hair wigs to sick children.

In addition to handling real hair donations, the Little Princess Trust also raises funds to assist in finding causes and cures for paediatric cancer and to aid research into less toxic treatments. Last year, over £4,500,000 was raised for this purpose.

So how does it work? Well, the charity’s website sets out clear guidelines regarding the donation of hair. For obvious reasons, it must be of a certain length and not dyed an unnatural colour. Hair extensions and dreadlocks are not acceptable, neither are split ends. However, clean, dry hair in good condition from any gender and of any natural colour is perfect. Hi, please introduce yourself to our readers: I’m the CEO and Co-Founder of Kuwait London Company.

The company is mainly F&B focused and we operate 5 local concepts with 13 outlets in Kuwait - The Kitchen, Junkyard, Humble Burgers, Proper Sliders and Chubby Balls.

Tell us about your education: I graduated with a degree in Management from Royal Holloway University of London in 2011. At the time I was planning on working straight after university but decided to continue my studies. I obtained a Master’s degree in Management in the MENA Region from SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) in 2012.

What has your journey been like up to this point and how did you get to where you are today?

It has been an extremely exciting journey. The company was originally set up in 2008 by my brother Mohammed for the family. He set up the first restaurant in the company ‘The Kitchen’ in 2009. In 2010 we acquired Talabat and my brother mainly focused on developing Talabat in Kuwait and across the GCC. That really opened our eyes to the online delivery business.

In 2012, we had opened a second outlet for The Kitchen that wasn’t performing well and Mohammed wanted to shut it down.

I proposed to him we change the concept into an American street food joint called ‘Junkyard’. At the time, I didn’t feel I had enough experience to venture into the restaurant business but once I made my decision to take this responsibility on I had to be committed. I was always interested in the food business but I didn’t realize how complicated running a restaurant business was. Once Junkyard was finally set up and was performing well that really gave me the confidence to continue in this industry and take KLC forward in the food business.

Why did you decide to develop your own local concepts instead of franchising?

When we set up the company the number of local concepts was few and people were mainly focused on franchising brands.

This was more expensive and franchises usually have certain demands which must be met. We also wanted to have full control over the brand and felt that if we focused on developing our own brands we would be able to meet consumer tastes and expectations better and would be more flexible to change and innovate in the local market.

The Kitchen was set up in 2009 and was the first restaurant under the group. We then set up Junkyard, a street food concept in 2012. Humble Burgers followed in 2014 and in 2015 we set up Proper Sliders. In 2017 we decided to create a dessert concept that mainly focused on Chubby Balls a popular dessert dish which we sold in all our outlets.

Describe your vision for KLC: We are constantly striving to offer customers value in all our restaurants. Our main objective is to offer our customers quality, reasonably priced food conveniently delivered to their doorsteps.

The delivery market is extremely competitive and customers are always looking for good quality options that are priced sensibly.

What has been your most challenging project to date and why?

The most challenging project was definitely setting up my first restaurant. Entering this industry with very little experience was always going to be difficult. However, with time, Himdillah, things began to make more sense and everything came together.

How do you select or decide on the area and location for your restaurants?

As we are essentially a delivery-based business our locations are selected in areas that have easy access. We try and locate 018

ourselves in locations away from main highways and busy roads. This way we are able to deliver to customers on time and avoid unexpected delays.

We all know service is key. How do you motivate your staff to keep a constant service ethic?

Teamwork is the most crucial aspect in any operation. We try our best to create a positive culture and incorporate all team members as much as possible. Company activities and functions are really important. Proper training is also essential in maintaining good service and a positive workforce.

What continues to motivate or inspire you in this industry?

It’s an extremely competitive industry that is always changing.

Peoples’ tastes and behaviors are always changing with time.

Keeping up to date creating new dishes and developing the brands with the team is something I really enjoy. Customer feedback, whether it’s positive or negative, really motivates me to improve and drive the business forward.

Do any of the concepts offer breakfast?

We only serve breakfast at Junkyard Al-Hamra at the moment.

We are working on a breakfast concept which will hopefully be launched very soon.

What's your secret to keep customers coming in?

We try our best to maintain our standards and promise to deliver good quality food, that’s reasonably priced and delivered hot to customers within 45 minutes.

Tell our readers more about your catering service. Is there is a minimum number requirement?

We ventured into home and event catering last year after receiving many requests from our loyal customers that we were not able to fulfil. You can contact our catering hotline, drop us an email or book your catering event online through Bilbayt. When it comes to the size of the order it really depends on availability and the location of the event.

Do you have plans to open more restaurants in the future?

Currently we are working on opening several more outlets in Kuwait this year, Inshallah.

As an employer, what kind of qualities, experience and training do you look for in new recruits?

Generally, we tend to always look for people who are honest, hard working, believe in what we are trying to do and are committed to their jobs. In terms of experience and training it really depends on the type of job and the person we are hiring.

For the years to come, what do you want KLC to be known for?

We are trying our best to be one of the leading home-grown delivery groups in Kuwait. By focusing on meeting our goals we can hopefully continue to improve our business and continue to grow our network of restaurants in Kuwait and hopefully the GCC.

What are your favourite hang-out spots in Dubai?

It’s hard to choose as there are so many - and new ones every week!

But I have to say that I love going to the beach or pool whenever I have the chance. I have a Privilee membership, which makes it possible to go to the beach or pool at many 5* hotels here, which is perfect for me!

For sunset drinks, Jetty Lounge at One & Only Royal Mirage is my favourite for a beautiful view and a relaxing atmosphere.

For dinner I have to say Play Restaurant in the H Hotel.

Their food is delicious.

Tell us about your blog: My blog is all about the luxury lifestyle - from fashion to beauty to travel and food - updated daily with all the hottest news!

What is the biggest challenge you face with your work?

Time. I am doing everything by myself so it can be pretty busy sometimes and although I am working full-time on my blog, it’s never finished. But that’s just me as I am such a perfectionist.

What inspires you?

Travelling. It’s so nice to explore new things and to meet new people.

How do you stay in shape?

I am not a fan of the gym. I like outdoor sports, like paddle-boarding, swimming and playing tennis.

As we all know, food is also very important to stay in shape so I eat a lot of vegetables and salads but also fresh salmon and tuna. Plus, I drink a lot of water.

Furthermore, I rely on Detox Delight for their juices.

After that I joined a luxury travel and lifestyle magazine as Director of PR and Communications and recently started my own blog where you can find everything relating to the luxury lifestyle.

What are some of your favourite childhood memories?

Summer holidays with my family. My mom and dad took me and my brother to lots of places - especially in Europe - and I loved it!

What tips do you have for taking a great Instagram photo?

Good lighting. And don’t take it too seriously; it still has to be fun.

What's your number one make-up tip?

It starts with your skincare, so take care of your skin first!

I personally love serums like La Prairie (white caviar illuminating pearl infusion) which gives you a flawless skin.

I also like to pamper my skin with a Starskin Beauty face mask – they’re amazing!

What’s your most memorable shoot?

It was a photo shoot that I did with Carla from The Stylistes for a Spanish magazine. She arranged the most beautiful dresses from Michael Cinco and we were shooting in the desert where I was wearing a crown. Later, Michael Cinco told me it was the same crown that Beyonce was wearing in one of her video clips!

What's the best advice you can give on how to better manage time?

Organize and plan everything in advance - planning is key.

I have different planners, as this works best for me; one for the articles I post on my blog, one for Instagram, one for meetings and one for event attendance.

Best advice you’ve ever received?

Those must be from my mom; - Always be yourself - Be kind - Be honest

What are your plans for the future?

Travelling for sure; and to continue to work hard for manonisabella.com

My father is Italian and French. He met my mother, a black African mixed with French and Indian from the Arawak tribe in Guadeloupe. I was born and raised in Guadeloupe where my parents got married. It's a small Caribbean island which has a French region. This means we speak French, pay in Euro, have French passports and so on. I moved to France at the age of 13 because my parents wanted to live in the South of France.

Tell us about your childhood. Did you do music at school?

I had a great childhood between the sea and the mountains. My brother and I did lots of sports with our dad, from scuba diving to judo and from windsurfing to trekking. It was such a peaceful life. My mother has 11 siblings so we were always with someone from the family somewhere on the island, sharing love and laughing.

Music was everywhere. It's not something you specifically study at school in those islands but we played, danced and laughed every weekend in the back yard. The family would organise jam sessions every Saturday. Some of my uncles were professional, my mom still sings Gospel and my dad used to play harmonica and guitar.

When you are a kid you take an instrument or a piece of wood and you try to follow the adults.

What came first? Songwriting, singing or composing?

Was it a conscious choice to do the music, lyrics and composing all yourself?

Composing all by myself was not something conscious. I just started to write some poems and to paint. I was having fun. I was playing. It was just a way to express myself. In fact, when I used to play, words would come instantly. It's still the same now. I just play and after a while I have a song. I don't know why or how, it just happens.

What are some of the hardest things about creating your own music?

It was sometimes very difficult to choose songs and throw away others that you liked but you can't put all of them on an album, for various reasons. It's also very hard to do it all by yourself because you focus on the sound take, the mix, the part you play, production, arrangement, your voice and everything else in the same day. When I finish an album I am truly exhausted.

I started writing songs when I moved to France.

I suddenly felt very lonely. I am the older brother and I needed to speak to someone and tell things that you cannot tell to your parents. My guitar was there to listen.

Which instruments do you play yourself?

I play bass, acoustic and electric guitar, cajon, djembé and keyboards (but not like a piano player). In the studio I can play several times so it's fine at the end. I also play small funny things like kalimba, shaker or melodica.

When and how did you land in Kuwait?

I came here in 2013. I needed a change after different tribulations. I have been a musician and a teacher for years. Life as a musician is not that easy and most have another job. I specialize in Literature and I also have a Masters to teach the French language to foreigners. The French Institute of Kuwait contacted me about a job and I came for a new experience in the world.

Where do you get your inspiration for writing your songs?

I don't really know. I think inspiration is a long process of maturation. A mix between all that you have learned, heard and read, year after year. I really work hard. I am curious about a lot of different subjects and I spend time every day reading about history, psychology, science, astrology, music, sports and so on.

How would you describe your music in your own words?

Red Gold and Green Folk.

When did the idea of a recording come up? Tell us about your first music album. How has the journey been since then?

I was 18 years old. During the summer I was working as a roadie to make money and be able to watch bands for free. The guy who used to make the sound heard a demo tape that I did in my bedroom. He had a professional studio and asked me if I wanted to record, just to have a good quality sound. Of course I said yes. Then he sent one song to a contest called MIDEM and I won 1st prize. So I started to record. He taught me how to use his studio so that he didn’t have to be there to help me and we have stayed in touch after all of those years. He is a very gentle, humble and talented man.

The idea of an album came years after that. I was a sideman, playing mostly in Reggae bands and Rap bands, still recording original songs but I thought I hadn't found the original and personal style I was looking for. Then I came back to my island and met some new musicians.

After a few months I decided to make a record. It went well because La Sacem granted me a price and also money to develop my project. Then La Fnac and Virgin Megastore advertised it as the young talent of the month.

It was great! With four musicians from Guadeloupe we were touring everywhere in Europe to promote this record, opening shows for Keziah Jones, Alpha Blondy and Ismael Lô.

But I still thought I hadn't found the exact direction I was looking for so I split from the band. It was a meeting with David Rubinson after a show in Paris that helped me a lot. Sometimes simple sentences at the right time find their way to your subconscious. I decided to do it all by myself and stick to my vision: Red Gold and Green Folk, my current style. The first album I did was the start of the right journey with the right musical vision. I was 38 and I still create this type of music.

What kind of message do you want to tell with your songs?

The kind of message that Bob Marley and Bob Dylan spread - we are human, we should be treated with equity; we are weak but together we can be strong if we can respect one another's beliefs.

Tell us about your last album ‘Back to Roots’.

How did you compile and select all of the songs for this album?

I wanted to work again with some of the musicians from Guadeloupe that I worked with 15 years ago. That's why it's called Back to Roots. I also wanted to work with people I had met in Kuwait and I mixed it all up with vibes in my style. Now I know exactly my sound. People from different cultures are most welcome. It was easy to select the songs. If when I played one, my son was running to the studio with a smile or dancing, I would keep the song - simple! He has good taste, I trust him even though he is only 20 months old!

How did you select the musicians to collaborate in this album?

I work with people full of spirit. If someone can be a friend, he can play on my music. I am not in the business any more. I am just trying to have fun and to create energy with some beautiful souls. We all have different talents and united we stand!

What's your current main project?

I have collaborated with a movie maker who shot something with Nicolas Karabatic, the best handball player in the world. I’m currently working on an advert for Matahi, a natural energy drink made with baobab.

Are you already writing and recording songs for your next studio album?

I am writing songs but only the root, guitar and voice, melody and harmony. I will record it in August. First I need to play those songs on stage this summer to see if I am comfortable and if they make me fly.

How do you see the current music scene in Kuwait?

Four years ago, when I met my actual partners, the scene was really small. Then month after month came a new scene and new musicians. There are more and more shows and a lot of interesting musicians in every style. As I am also a teacher, I am happy because I found an evolution. I would just like some of them to be less American and more

Music is a part of me so I am very happy for those people who play and those who listen. I love to play and I listen to a lot of music every day.

Your message for our readers and your fans in Kuwait?

I am still here and I am already missing you now I know it's the end of the season here!

How has your experience been performing live in Kuwait?

It was great. Reactions and behaviours are totally different here. People who come to my shows are very well educated, smart, open minded and curious. A bunch of beautiful people. I feel blessed; do you know another Frenchman who has performed for four years in Kuwait? That's awesome! A beautiful experience. Of course it's different than in Europe but my mind and my arms are wide open to embrace the change and new ways to think, to give and receive.

Where else have you performed in the region?

I have played in Oman, Qatar, Abu Dhabi, Dubai and I hope to play in Bahrain soon because they have contacted me several times.

Your message for us at CP magazine: I love you all! Keep on grooving.

Lastly, is there any advice you would give to young songwriters and artists who are trying to break into the business?

Work. Listen. Perform. Work. Learn from the past. And don't try to be anyone else but you. Don't forget to turn mistakes into something beautiful. Stop showing off, focus on the music first. I say that because I used to show off until one of my mentors asked me if I thought I was a genius! I came back to Earth quickly! But it's ok to have fun as long as it helps the song, not your ego. FITNESS AND MENTAL COACHING FOR RAMADAN Spirituality, peace, contemplation, kindness, great food, family and happiness - some of the many words that come to mind when thinking about the Holy Month of Ramadan.

So what does Ramadan mean to the mind and body?

Your lifestyle is going to change soon for a month, going from a normal sleep pattern to a non-routine day/night. The circadian cycle will be reversed and the body will be affected.

Muslims all over the world abstain from eating, drinking and smoking, as well as participating in anything that is ill-natured or excessive; from dawn until the sun sets.

SEE In the Arabian Gulf particularly, restaurants and coffee shops only open after sunset and working hours are shorter. More time is spent around the house. Muslims who fast stay awake for the pre-dawn meal of Suhoor. Almost every meal is consumed with the family, followed by all members of the family gathered around one TV to watch their favourite Ramadan programs. Taking all of this into account, there are noticeable shifts in media consumption as well.

FEEL Let’s take media consumption as an example. During Ramadan, TV consumption increases by almost 25% in the region. Viewers are consuming content that is more relevant.

And let’s not forget digital! There is a major opportunity to

move online as usage peaks during Suhoor (between 2:00am and 4:00am) and social media usage increases by 30% during the month. According to studies, in the UAE and Qatar social media users during Ramadan last year were most active leading up to sunset, while in Saudi Arabia, Facebook was most popular around 10pm and Twitter was busy between 4am-6am.

REACT After a brief study of a new lifestyle after the Suhoor until 4am, the body and mind can be affected by the changes in different ways - positively or negatively - through wellbeing and physical activities. The fitness activity is decreasing by the augmentation of the activities on social media and virtual life online. People decrease their moves and feel mentally drained by the hot weather and the reduction of physical activities.

So here’s an interesting fact about the brain: During a period of fasting, a hormone is released that upsets how your body changes food into energy. When that happens, it increases the number of mitochondria in neurons that tell you when you’re hungry.

In research, this caused mice to overeat. The study suggests there’s a connection between ‘breaking fast’ and eating more than you need to replenish yourself. Typically we have noticed a trend in increased obesity and many incidence of diabetes during the Holy month because of irregular and inappropriate eating after breaking the fast.

RELEASE Mental Coaching will be an amazing tool to decrease obesity and also increase wellbeing during the Holly month. How? Simply by keeping the body and mind correlated in one.

By spending more time with the family, practicing more meditation, creating meal preparation or cooking your own food. A new culinary knowledge can change everything about your way of life .A lifestyle isn’t a diet; it’s changing your life to a new lifestyle. A new approach of reading and meditation will teach you how to control yourself and use a positive mind in many situations. he female menopause is no laughing matter. Take it from someone who knows!

Having said that, sometimes it’s better to see the funny side of things; after all, it’s better to laugh than to cry. In many households, the menopause has become a taboo subject so if nothing else, making fun of our symptoms should get the subject out in the open.

No-one likes suffering in silence do they?

The most common symptoms of the menopause or ‘the change’ as it’s often called, include night sweats, short-term memory loss, weight gain, mood swings and hot flushes. Not much fun for the lady concerned but hardly a barrel of laughs for her partner either. The key is recognizing the signs and addressing them head on.

There are, of course, a number of remedies available to tackle some, if not all, of the symptoms. Most of these, however, carry a variety of side-effects which can be more serious than the symptoms themselves. For this reason, many women decline medical treatment and decide to ‘ride it out’. The trouble with that is, there is no way of knowing how long the menopause will last. Some suffer for only a short time, others for years and years.

Now, where was I? Oh yes, the menopause. Memory loss can be extremely irritating. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve gone to the store only to forget what I went there for. I can be introduced to someone new, then less than a minute later, completely forget their name. Many times I’ve left one room in the house to go to another with absolutely no idea what I was going there for. Whilst annoying, it’s not the end of the world if we become a little forgetful; and laughing about it later is much better than feeling embarrassed or ashamed.

From my own personal point of view, hot flushes are the worst thing about the change. I have no idea when I might have one or how long it will last.

Sometimes I could have dozens in one day, other times I may have none. It’s the unpredictability that makes them so annoying. Only yesterday, I was standing in a queue waiting to pay for some items in a store when a hot flush appeared from nowhere. I felt as though I was about to spontaneously combust! In an attempt to remove my jacket, I dropped my intended purchases on 040

MAY 2017

the floor, elbowed a total stranger in the stomach and instantly regretted my choice of what was now an almost see-through blouse. Two minutes later, thanks to the store’s air conditioning, I felt as icy as the stranger’s stare. ‘Sorry’ I said, ‘hot flush’. I’m sure I detected the crease of a smile. Whether he was smiling at my bundled attempt at an apology or the way my hair was now sticking to my face, I have no idea.

Suffering a hot flush in the middle of the day is one thing. Suffering one in the middle of night is quite another. For some reason, night sweats seem ten times worse. Within minutes of settling down to sleep, the comforter is thrown off, the sheets are wet with sweat and the only option is a shower. Needless to say, this is not an ideal recipe for a good night’s sleep. Again, laughing about it is the only option. It may be disturbing from your partner’s point of view but at least you can remind him that you’re still ‘hot stuff’!

Mood swings are probably the most difficult symptom to cope with as far as our friends and family are concerned. One minute you’re bright and cheery, the next you’re ranting and raving like a banshee. It’s not uncommon to launch into a torrent of abuse at the most minor thing, or to get upset over something as trivial as a spilt drink.

Reactions like these can quite easily escalate into a full scale row so it’s important to recognise them for what they are i.e. a symptom over which you have no control. Once your family are aware of the facts and are able to understand why you are behaving in such an uncharacteristic manner, they can handle it much better. Being able to laugh about it (together) is vital.

There are, of course, countless self-help books available on the subject as well as natural remedies and medical treatments aimed at reducing or eliminating the symptoms. However, working on the theory that laughter really is the best medicine, a good dose of humour will, if nothing else, put a smile on your face throughout this challenging period.

TEEN ACNE - CAUSES AND TREATMENT OPTIONS

T

eenagers are faced with a myriad of challenges while growing up, one of which is acne. The primary cause of teen acne is hormonal fluctuations associated with puberty. These hormones stimulate the oil glands in the pores to make more oil, which along with the dead skin cells can clog the pores making a favorable atmosphere for bacterial proliferation.

The bacterial growth then stimulates the body to mount an immune response creating redness, inflammation and pus formation causing the dreaded pimple.

The healthy skin care regimen for teens is aimed at decreasing oil, exfoliating the skin, moisturizing and decreasing inflammation and bacteria.

Daily facial care for teen acne: 1.Gently wash your face twice a day. In the morning wash with a gentle non-soap cleanser and then apply a moisturizer that says non-comedogenic. Also use a sunblock with a minimum SPF of 30.

2. At bedtime wash with a cleanser containing 2.5% benzoyl peroxide and apply moisturizer.

3.Spot treatment: apply 2% salicylic/glycolic acid containing cream/serum on acne spots at bedtime.

Other medical interventions may be helpful, such as chemical peels, acne facials and laser treatments. Assessing internal factors is also key to improvement and your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic course for your acne. With the combination of topical and in-office treatments, teen acne can be managed and long-term effects may be avoided.

When treating teen acne it is important to consider medical intervention as early as possible to prevent worsening and permanent scarring. If scarring has already occurred then laser treatments are extremely beneficial at minimizing the depth and severity of scarring.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE…

A

Although Kuwait has not generally been known as a melting pot, it is obvious that it is woven in the fabric of the culture. Kuwait is a wonderful place that allows all cultures and races to live harmoniously together.

At first glance one may not think so, yet when you look deeper into the multi-faceted Kuwaiti culture whether as a native citizen or other nationality, it is obvious that a deep respect and keen tolerance for all cultures, races and religions is present. In this country we all live together in peace.

‘Who do you love?’ once sang LL Cool J. Whether you frequent Marina Crescent or Gate Mall, you are bound to see people coming together to share their experience and amongst them some will even find love; a true understanding of love; a love that can stand for itself amongst the many hurdles that life will present to the couple. The beauty in Kuwait is that you are destined to know, learn and grow mentally, spiritually and emotionally with others. We are all different and accepting that difference without judgment is the meaning of love. In Kuwait, it is obvious that people stand up for each other. They accept the differences we share with love.

On the topic of love, it is always apparent that cultures, races and religions are coming together to unify in Kuwait. I have not lived in any other GCC country so I cannot speak of those, yet here in Kuwait you can always see how cultures weave together to create a lasting bond. Before doing research on this topic, I interviewed many families and couples of different backgrounds living harmoniously together. Over the holidays I was invited to the home of friends who will, one day, be of a mixed religion marriage. It was beautiful to see them, as well as the other guests, enjoying a holiday that may not be something they would traditionally celebrate. I also had the opportunity to interview other mixed marriage families. I myself come from a

mixed marriage where my mother is Croatian and my father is Lebanese. In Canada this is very common yet I did not expect to see this in Kuwait. My assumption was wrong. Very wrong! I recently met a family where the mother is from the Philippines and the father Scottish, and another family where the mother was Christian and the father Muslim. Celebrations then become a part of their rituals as they embrace each other’s differences as opposed to using it against growth and change.

Some of our greatest challenges as humans are to learn from each other and grow from those differences without judgment. This is obvious in Kuwait as we are all from a variety of backgrounds and enjoy a peaceful existence in a country that embraces difference as strength towards innovation and growth. How many expats have started businesses, married and become active citizens who have laid a strong foundation in Kuwait while walking their path with someone who is not the same? Going forward it is obvious that the youth in Kuwait, whether Kuwaiti or expat, will be different than their forefathers.

With so many young Kuwaitis living, studying and travelling abroad from such a young age, it is obvious that the mindset can never be the same.

Nothing is more obvious as an expat or Kuwaiti than the relationships we form with people in this country of Kuwait, from friendships to romances and, above all, the ability to relate to one another without speaking the same language or growing up with the same family rituals and traditions. We accept the differences we share, particularly as every holiday, tradition or celebration is attended by all who take part in your life. Our plethora of friends in Kuwait is not limited to our birth right of a certain religion, culture or race. We all come together to share our moment in time in a country we now call home; with love.

REVIVE YOUR SOUL THIS RAMADAN Naseera Hoorzook

R

amadan is here and it’s the perfect time to kick-start your spiritual connection.

Think of it as a boot-camp, a retreat, a time to focus inward as well as outward.

If you are able to consciously internalise your thoughts and turn them into actions then you stand to score all round and are able to achieve more than just a feeling of hunger and sleep deprivation.

You can mobilise yourself towards outward action by serving your immediate family, yourself and your community; and in doing so, your Ramadan days would have a more meaningful and productive spin to them.

You may wonder, why now? Why in Ramadan? I’ll tell you why.

Firstly, the past is already gone and the future has still not arrived. But since Ramadan is NOW you’d have a great head-start and opportunity to grab on to. Secondly, fasting in its own right takes strength and discipline; it is challenging and requires some serious mental and physical stamina. We know

that disciplining the body and mind are one of the best ways to exercise self-restraint. Naturally, when you fast you are already training yourself to restrain from that which you love. By default you are already challenging your body and mind, so taking the next step should be simpler than starting from scratch, out of Ramadan.

Third, we know that in Ramadan the rewards for our actions are multiplied. So mathematically this is the perfect chance to score more points with no extra effort on your part. The rewards for your effort will be felt immediately as well as being accumulated for the next life. We know this from various passages in the Quran. Here is one such example: Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward (in the Hereafter) according to the best of what they used to do (Al-Na'hl, 16: 97).

Finally, another great reason to start here, now, in Kuwait is that we have been granted more time off

work officially by the government. So prior to, and after Ramadan this perk will no longer exist. You would need to scramble to find time for yourself and the development of your inner being.

Now that it all makes sense, start your journey towards self-realisation and soul rejuvenation now.

Some parts of the process have already begun. So here’s an idea how to move deeper towards finding your soul, becoming more mindful and living more consciously this month and thereafter.

The first step to take now would be to understand the soul. What is it? What do we know about it? And how does it affect us?

The Webster’s Dictionary defines the soul as: ‘an entity which is regarded as being the immortal or spiritual part of a person and which, having no physical or material reality, is credited with the functions of thinking, willing, and choosing’.

According to Salman Al Odah: ‘The dualism between the body and soul is very clearly evident in the physical world. The body is subservient and the soul is in charge; however both are indispensable. It is just that the soul is the master while the body is the obedient servant. People have a habit of letting themselves become fully absorbed in fulfilling their physical needs to the utter disregard of their spiritual ones, which are rarely so much as contemplated’.

Coming back to why Ramadan, why now? The dualism spoken about above is what needs to be balanced. Often with the social media influence and current lifestyle trends, there is a lot of focus on the physical/outer bodies than there is on inner traits and values.

Depriving your body of innate desires such a food, and intimacy (in Ramadan) means you are already using your soul to take charge of our body and mind.

Mindfulness experts recommend some practical and easy-to-implement ways to find the balance between the dualities of body and mind. Some notable ways are to:

• Practice gratitude • Eat lighter foods • Meditate/ponder • Reconcile and accept yourself, your past and things you can’t change • Do things that bring you real and lasting joy • Embrace that you are not your thoughts and therefore disconnect from identifying as such • Open your heart, to be yourself, to let go of your ego • Send positive notes to yourself

The Islamic approach to nurturing the soul has 2 components.

1. Your obligation to God. This is the personal spiritual connection you build and maintain with God by carrying out rituals and acts of worship such as fasting, prayer, praise and becoming consciously aware of His presence, and so forth.

2. Your responsibility to humanity. This encompasses fulfilling the rights you owe to other human beings, animals, the environment and all of creation.

In finding a balance between your personal relationship with God and the one you have with everything around you, you will find peace, a heightened level of conscious living and enlightenment. Below are a few basic steps to set you on your path towards mindfulness as you search for your connection to your soul.

Take a moment to draw up two columns, one being the personal obligations to God and the second column for our obligations to humanity.

Then list what you can realistically start working on today. Commit to at least five in each column.

These can become your set of Ramadan goals.

Start implementing them now and notice how your confidence, contentment and satisfaction begin to flood you. I wish you the most amazing and soul satisfying month of Ramadan. Naseera

Elnett Satin hairspray has been the ultimate styling product of hairdressers and stylists around the world for almost half a century. In 1960, L’Oreal laboratories created this satin formula containing fine polymers that could be brushed out. They revolutionized the hairspray market with a product that effortlessly fulfilled all the promises.

Please introduce yourself to our readers: I’m 26 years old, originally from Ohio and opened CW Pencil Enterprise in NYC in 2015.

Tell us about your education: I studied art at Goldsmiths College in London.

How and when did your love for pencils begin?

I fell in love with pencils at no particular point as a child. I grew up in a creative household with parents who are obsessed with art/office supplies. With age, my interest in these things grew and pencil eventually - and very organically - became my 'thing'.

Tell us your journey from when you began to collect pencils to when you opened your own store: Opening a pencil shop was always a silly dream; my if-I-couldhave-any-job plan. I liked the idea of being able to take a world tour through a very simple, universal object. I moved to NYC after college and had a job I really disliked. One day I woke up and a switch flipped in my head and I decided to go for it. It took about 8 months to get the website set up and to open the shop.

Which is your favourite pencil?

If I could only live with one pencil it would be the Editor, the pencil we made with Caran d'Ache. I use a lot of red pencil, so it's useful to have it all-in-one. Otherwise, I always fall back on the Craft Design Technology Pencil (both the Pentel and Camel versions).

What, according to you, is a good or great pencil?

A good pencil holds its point well, is well centered, is made out of good quality wood and satisfies whatever qualities the user likes about pencils, whether it be scratch, smooth, hard, waxy, dry, etc.

When and why did you decide to write the book?

I was approached last year by Gestalten about writing this book.

They offered me the opportunity and I jumped on it - how could I say no?

How long did it take you to complete it?

About 4 months.

In general, what does the book cover?

The book covers pencil history from the 16th century until today.

It’s full of anecdotes and stories of people, places and things that define what the pencil is as an object and what its place is in the world.

Who would you recommend to read your book?

I’d recommend it to anyone with an interest in analog tools as well as anyone who’s curious about objects.

Who has been your greatest help in completing this book?

I’m not quite sure how to answer this. I wrote this book entirely on my own. Henry Petroski’s book on pencils - the only other book on pencils - was incredibly helpful though.

How would you describe the experience during the writing process?

It was hard because I have a very busy job. I spent a lot of very late nights writing.

What are your future plans? Any more books planned?

I’m not planning any more books right now. I’m quite happy with my one shop. I’d like to continue to develop some new products and grow my online business.

What are some of your other hobbies?

I spend a lot of time writing letters, travelling, knitting and reading.

What has been your biggest achievement so far?

My biggest achievement was definitely opening my tiny pencil shop on Forsyth Street. That’s what started all of this.

Have you ever found yourself lost in the beauty department store with the idea of buying a brush or two for your make-up kit but not knowing what to buy? CP Magazine will this month guide you through the forest of brushes with a free BRUSH MASTERCLASS! The right make-up brush can make a big difference to your make-up application. Having a good understanding of the use of each brush is essential, but honestly, you don’t need to own every single brush in every single size. Having a powder, blush, contouring and a blending brush for the eyes should be enough; using your fingers can be the best tool for your foundation, concealer and lips.

There are two kinds of bristles, synthetic and natural. The synthetic brushes are man-made from nylon or other synthetic materials and, in my opinion, are the best to use with creamy products and liquid foundations.

The natural brushes are often made of different animal hair and work best with powdered products. These are better for blending. When the bristles are shorter the application gives a much fuller coverage. When the bristles are longer the application is much softer.

One piece of good advice is to clean your brushes regularly. Dirty brushes can build up bacteria and cause acne and other skin problems. I would normally wash them with a bar of soap and rub the brushes with the soap two to three times. Keep brushing until the foam comes out clear then rinse them with a lot of water and dry them flat (horizontally) on a towel over night.

That way you keep your make-up flawless and your brushes will last much longer.

For simplicity, I will break it down for you: This set of 12 brushes is from SIGMA. It is one of the best brush sets I own. They are high quality brushes and come with a leather holder cup. The price is not exaggerated either and you can easily order it from Amazon.com or other net shops.

How long have you been making films and videos?

I directed music videos for 10 years, but Mahbas is my first film. I started working on it in the beginning of 2013.

How did you make the jump from directing music videos to feature films?

Directing music videos was the only way to get close to storytelling. The budgets were there, the production companies were there, so I took advantage of telling certain stories or conveying certain emotions through my videos. Most of them were not just a sequence of beauty shots. Making a film was the ultimate goal and only when all the elements were found, did I decide to take that leap - along with my partner, co-writer and producer, Nadia Eliewat.

How did you come up with the idea for MAHBAS? Nadia Eliewat-Producer

We wanted to talk about a subject that matters; something that’s worth telling. The Lebanese-Syrian relationship with all the baggage that it carries is, in our opinion, worth shedding light on. It is a complicated lovehate relationship and complications in films are needed and wanted.

When you started writing, was the story clear in your head or did it evolve over many drafts?

Of course the main line of the story, being the proposal between a Syrian and a Lebanese, was there from the start. What changed from the first to the final draft of the script was the flow of the story, the structure, the dimensions of the characters and their actions; and also the sub-plots that were created to reach, at the end, a well-rounded, believable, identifiable story.

How did you go about casting the lead role?

Julia Kassar, ‘Thérèse’ was the one and only actress that came to my mind for the role. We approached her when we were still at the first draft and were delighted to have her from day one, and to know that she believed in the potential the story carries. Julia is one of the most respected, serious, professional actresses in Lebanon.

I don’t think an actress who doesn’t have these great qualities could have carried Mahbas the way Julia did.

Which was the most difficult character to cast?

Maybe the most ‘dangerous’ character in Mahbas is ‘Solange’, the neighbour and friend, played by the amazing Betty Taoutel. Solange is a pushed character, who goes beyond reason in reacting to events. We didn’t want to fall in the trap of exaggeration, and Betty, like me, had the same care for the role and succeeded in not exceeding the border line of the situation comedy. People love her.

How difficult was it to finance your first movie?

I was lucky to have people who wanted to support me in my first movie. Three Lebanese investors came on board and made my dream possible. Also our main partner and co-producer, ART, thanks to a dear friend and supporter, Antoine Khalifeh. Also, Damas Jewelry believed in our story and contributed to the budget and by designing an engagement ring especially for Mahbas.

How were you able to juggle it all and continue your current full-time job as a manager of student affairs at the American University in Dubai?

I am also a mother of two boys, Jad 10 and Ziad, now 6. It was not easy at all and I am sure my family suffered a bit due to my continuous absences. Being a mother, the guilt feeling does not leave you so it was definitely a hard task.

My husband was very supportive, AUD as well, because the administration believed in the value of what both Nadia and I are doing. It all ended without any serious damage on anyone!

When do story ideas usually hit you?

There is no special time for that, plus I did not have the luxury to choose a time of the day where I am more creative. We wrote whenever time permitted. We had to write in order to meet the deadlines we set for ourselves.

Sometimes we would spend a day without even writing half a scene, but that happens to anyone who is keen to write.

Please describe the things you do on a typical day.

I rarely have time to do anything outside kids, full-time job where I teach writing and production, and all work related to Mahbas. I force myself to do some exercise but I am not consistent. I always feel I can do more in everything, but it turns out there are limitations, which I don’t like. I travel a lot, mainly with my sister Julia. I read but not enough.

On a good day when things are going well, can you give an example of something that really makes you feel good?

In most of my days things are going well! First comes spending some quality time with the kids, it really makes a difference to me. Also, hearing great feedback about the release of Mahbas which is happening a lot lately and I am very thankful for it.

What’s next for you?

I am starting soon to work on a new script - a theme that I have had in mind for some time now - but it’s still too early to talk about.

Your message for our readers in Kuwait?

First of all thank you for having read my long interview and I hope Mahbas speaks to you; I am eagerly waiting to know the feedback after our Kuwaiti release.

The Science of Afterburn There is a scientific term for afterburn: excess postexercise oxygen consumption (EPEOC). This refers to the oxygen that your body needs to restore after a heart-pounding workout. So afterburn is indeed real.

As you exercise, your body needs fuel to keep your muscles firing and this requires oxygen to transport the fuel into the muscles. This causes your metabolism to rev up to an elevated state during and after exercise.

Who inspired you to start your own business?

I have always had an interest in sports and well being and I found an opportunity in this specific sport.

Why a boxing gym and not a regular gym?

In a normal gym you train your body. In a boxing gym you train your mind, heart and body. While lifting weights will get you the abs you need for summer, boxing gives you GUTS FOR LIFE! What and who got you into boxing?

I was introduced to boxing in the US as a form of cardio. I used to alternate between running and boxing. I found it much more engaging than a mere treadmill.

What benefits do you think boxing can add to someone's life?

Boxing is far more than a sport. It is a great way to release stress, build character, boost confidence and get in the best shape of one's life.

What is your target market?

Anyone with determination who can put on gloves.

What makes boxing different to any other sport?

It is a metaphor for life. We are all fighters in life in the face of what are called problems. Everyone has difficulties they face every day and sometimes feel helpless about them. Just like in a fight, one needs to learn how to stand up, maneuver, roll and knock one's difficulties out. As the saying goes 'life is not about how hard you can hit, but how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward’.

What are the challenges you faced when you started the business?

I can talk for hours about that but I don't like to complain. The hardest thing is setting up the business due to ministry issues, but this is normal in Kuwait.

With all the new gyms opening, where do you see ‘The Hook’ in 5 years?

It is healthy to have a wider health club industry in the country. It will help raise health consciousness and this is why we are here. We aim to expand our home-like culture in the country and educate people about the great benefits of boxing without breaking your nose or front teeth doing it.

What does ‘The Hook’ mean?

A punch with knock-out power.

How do you spend your free time?

I like to work out, engage in social activities and spend time with my family. Family is sacred to me.

As an entrepreneur, what is the advice you would give to those who are considering starting their business soon?

What inspired you?

The hotel is designed for everyone who is in love with fashion, innovation and creativity. It is young and hip. The hotel fits for both corporate and leisure. Who said that corporates cannot have fun and stay in a hotel with a nice atmosphere, melody, good vibes and delicious food?

What does the hotel offer in terms of leisure facilities?

The hotel offers a wide variety of services. As well as rooms and a full food and beverage service – it has four outlets, each with its own identity and unique design for both locals and travelers – there’s banqueting, a concierge ‘wish list’, an alternative ‘just ask’ menu, activities, marketing tools for promotion and publicity, and a design store. You can skip to the rooftop to enjoy your favourite cocktail while tanning in the pool overlooking the hippodrome of Beirut. Moreover, an early morning or a late night work-out will help at our Superhero Gym. Everything is offered with a smile and a special touch. Also, you can enjoy a ride by renting one of our bikes and have a tour of the neighbourhood.

When my superheroes deliver professional service and ensure each guest’s stay is embraced with a unique emotional experience by anticipating their needs and exceeding expectations. This is what pushes me to go further. Also, my employees’ happiness and satisfaction is what motivates me the most.

What authentic local experiences will guests have access to?

We are having a sort of farmer market brunch at the Secret Garden; and for the travellers, we have a Lebanese breakfast buffet.

All staff are well trained and get along with guests in a professional but friendly way; personalized but never casual. My superheroes will make sure to deliver to every single guest a high standard of personalized service where they will be anticipating needs and fulfilling requirements and preferences leaving each guest with a unique emotional experience.

TheSmallville Hotel will offer every guest a ‘just ask’ menu, recommend the city’s happening outings, theatres, bookings and all Lebanese-flavour arts and culture with add-ons and extras that you do not usually find in a nondesigned hotel.

Your biggest achievement so far?

My biggest achievement so far is succeeding in building a successful team at the Smallville Hotel resulting in it becoming one of the top 3 hotels in town for high occupancy, and one of the top 5 hotels on TripAdvisor.

Although we are not a chain, we managed to create our own identity which is rarely found in the Arab region.

What are some of your hobbies?

Swimming is my major hobby. Also, creation and innovation is my passion.

Take time off to swim at the end of each day.

What are your keys to success?

Never giving up. Persistence, continual follow up, having a sense of detail and a sense of vision and purpose are my main keys to success.

Your favourite holiday destination?

Any beach destination. Immerging myself into salty water in the sunlight makes me feel very relaxed.

What are your future plans?

To expand into this business further and engage as many people as possible. I am also writing a children’s book for the UN about sustainable development goals that have been signed in the Paris agreement.

Your favourite cuisine?

Japanese.

WRITING MOVIE

T

his is the eighth film in the ever chart topping successful Fast & Furious franchise. If you suspected this would mean they slow things down you are absolutely mistaken. They manage to top the previous film’s action and also manage to tell a compelling story while doing so. To that end I say without reservation that story-wise this film is by far the best written film in the franchise. It almost perfectly sets up the dominoes to fall just right. Notice I said almost. With just one writer on this film it is a minor flaw to most, but as you read on below you will suddenly question the rest of the film and perhaps see it as a major flaw in writing.

Here come the spoilers.

This film kicks off with an old school street race on the streets of Havana. It’s really gritty and starts the story’s foreshadow of Dom’s desire to have a child. The next day Dom crosses paths with a woman who has something on him that will make him choose to betray his team; surprising, as the last few films in the franchise have clearly made a strong theme of family. This woman, played with cold steel malice by Charlize Theron, is a mysterious super hacker named Cipher who has covertly amassed money, die hard mercenaries, super hackers, weapons and bleeding edge technology to keep her untraceable and allow her to fly around the world undetectable by any nation on the globe. Remember this for later.

Jason Statham’s character, Decker, is back and the scenes in the prison with Dwayne Johnson as Luke Hobbs are superb. He also has a spectacular action sequence on a plane towards the end of the film which really lets Statham shine. The races and actions sequences are fast paced and expertly executed. The stakes are raised appropriately and all seems lost with no hope for Dom Toretto or his team. Or is it? Luckily Dom had a plan from the beginning. Of course he did. With all of these dominoes lined up action-wise and story-wise the audience is in for a thrill. But wait. The first domino is crucial to fall before the rest can. Now it’s time for me to reveal the films smallest, yet most crucial flaw – communication.

The film does a great job revealing what Cipher has on Dom. His former lover, Elena, and his son, who he didn’t know about until a couple days prior when he met Cipher, is being held hostage by her. The film did have a quick scene of Dom soldering something right before getting the call from Hobbs to bring his team to Berlin for a mission. Later it is revealed he was soldering a tracking chip to his cross in that scene. Oh wait I am not done with that scene. The chip protrudes out the back of the cross and has a flashing LED. Let me repeat that; a flashing LED. Dom was just seeing Cipher’s reflection in the glass wall as he was visiting Elena and his son. A 084

red flashing LED would be far too noticeable. Yet that isn’t the flaw.

The next gen plane is evading all radars, satellites, etc so therefore it must also have sensors to detect rogue signals coming in and out of the plane. Especially signals that would allow it to be tracked.

Still not the flaw…stay with me. This plane also would have tightly controlled communications systems given a super hacker is running the operation. She has a mic and video surveillance on Dom 24/7.

Even before she meets Dom it can be safely assumed she had all of his communications tapped, and, after he is on her plane all of his devices confiscated. So what’s the flaw? How did Dom arrange to meet Deckard’s mother, get the Cuban guy from the race at the beginning of the film to be where he needed him to be with the moving truck, identify all of the cameras in that area to know exactly where to drive and park the car? None of this is possible without communication. There is simply way too much information to pass along to accomplish all of these tasks - especially under the ever watchful eyes of Cipher and her team. Not to mention the plane would quickly detect any rogue communications coming from the plane. Let that sink in a bit.

The film includes some flashbacks to reveal that Dom didn’t kill Deckard, Deckard meets with mother, the Cuban guy helped Dom, two other guys from previous films pose as medics, and his cross tracker leads Deckard and his brother, the villain from the 6th film, to the plane to retrieve Dom’s son. Even if we suspend all disbelief and assume he did all of this communication before he got on her plane, how did he know New York was next? Oh, and one last cherry on top - he used the God’s Eye on Cipher’s plane to track Deckard’s brother who is locked away in an unknown secret prison. Again something Cipher would have detected and shut down. Unless she isn’t as good a hacker as the film wants us to believe.

Now how can we fix this movie wrong with writing? I admitted in the start of this review that it’s the best written story of the franchise so far and with just one writer I am very impressed. It isn’t easy being a writer and sometimes things get left out, unaddressed, or unexplained. Sometimes you don’t need to explain everything, but given that you put a super hacker as your main villain you have to do better to show how a non-hacker like Dom is going to take her down.

The only way to right this movie ‘wrong’ is to insert a flashback showing how Dom managed communications under the nose of Cipher. Just not plausible.

In conclusion, the writing just needs to fix the first domino of communication for Dom. Then the story sticks a solid landing for the the rest of the dominoes to fall in a perfect adrenaline pumped action film with a high stakes, great tension and a plausible plot.

Ramadan is the holy month. The streets go quiet during the day and in the evening the city comes alive. Incredible acts of kindness take place and everyone takes a moment to reflect and spend time with family and friends. You may be wondering how this introduction actually applies to our monthly makeover section. Well, we have tried to also bring joy, colour and a surprise factor to this month's makeover.

Anneken, please introduce yourself to our readers: My name is Anneken and I have just turned 40. I am Estonian and live in Dubai working as a make-up artist for TV Commercials and editorials.

What made you feel you needed the help of Carla & Marie and what do you expect from this experience?

Turning 40 feels like a new phase in life, but rather than feeling I should be more serious or look more classic, I feel quite the opposite. I want to bring on the outside the person I feel on the inside - happy, colourful and fun. I kindly asked Carla and Marie to help me achieve my dream of a new me. I trust them and I am very excited to see how this makeover experience turns out.

Now, let the makeover begin!

COLOUR ANALYSIS Colour is a key part to every person’s look, the colour of our hair, the colour of our lipstick, the colour of our outfit and accessories. It all sends a message about you. When analysing a person’s image, the first step is testing warm vs. cool colours in order to discover his or her optimal colour palette. This colour analysis applies to hair, make-up and wardrobe.

Let’s get down to business with our client Anneken. If we look at the two images of the colour analysis performed on Anneken, the one on the left shows warm colours and the one on the right cool colours. One of them brings Anneken more youth, more brightness and is definitely more flattering for her. On the other hand, the other colour palette has the opposite effect. We have concluded that she looks a million times better in the cool shades as oppose to the warm shades, which means Anneken is of cool undertone. Due to her fair skin, light colour of eyes and cool undertone, she is classified as ‘Summer’ colour palette, with softer shades of cool colours.

GOLD vs. SILVER ANALYSIS As individuals, we tend to feel more attracted towards silver or yellow gold. But the question is, is our favourite metal for our jewellery, accessories and even clothes, really the most flattering for us?

Looking at Anneken's image, silver near her face brings light and freshness, whereas gold makes her look pale, yellow and it ages her. Therefore, we conclude our client’s optimal metal is silver. www.cpmagazine.net

BODY SHAPE ANALYSIS We all have different body shapes, which we should embrace and make it work to our advantage. How do we do that? By choosing those garments and accessories that enhance our best body parts and camouflage those we are not so confident about. In order to make the most of our appearance and our body, the body shape analysis plays a key role.

Let’s analyse Anneken's proportions. When measuring her, we realise that her shoulders, waist and hips are pretty much in line, which indicates that Anneken is a ‘Rectangle' body type. The amazing part of her shape is that she can wear ruffles, big prints, oversized cuts and big or small belts. In other words, any form or shape that creates volume, rectangle shape people can take. In the case of our client, what we aim to create is the illusion of bigger shoulders and hips but smaller waist. We have achieved this by: lGiving her an oversized t-shirt with a big print, which instantly creates volume on the upper body. lBy adding a belt, we accentuate her waist. lFinally, a pencil skirt with textured fabric also creates the illusion of more volume, even though the skirt is a straight cut.

HAIR AND MAKEUP Without a shadow of a doubt, this is one of our favourite parts of the makeover process. Somehow hair and makeup make such a dramatic impact on all of our clients - in a positive way of course!

Anneken came to us craving a change. After numerous analyses and a long chat with her, we decided to give her something extraordinary that really showed with her creative, fun and outgoing personality. A dramatic red hair with a retro feel to it was all she needed.

Even though Anneken is of cool undertone, against all odds this daring shade of copper looks fantastic on our her. She now looks outgoing, fun and confident.

MAKEOVER RESULTS: Last but not least is ‘The Outfit’. Based on the analysis previously described, Anneken is cool undertone and Rectangle shape, therefore we have selected cool colours in the shades of white, red, blue and pink.

Doesn't she really rock those colours?

In terms of style, the retro feel of her hairstyle is blending perfectly with her outfit. Her makeover look showcases a mix between a rock star represented by her t-shirt - and a very feminine lady - achieved with her skirt, belt and sandals.

Please introduce yourself to our readers.

I am Selma Benomar. I was born and raised in Morocco before moving to Paris for higher studies. My brand of luxury kaftans was founded in 2012 after I moved to Dubai and realized the need for an authentic kaftan brand.

What inspired you to become a kaftan designer? Did you always know what you wanted to do?

Kaftans are close to Moroccan heritage. I remember watching a family member work on these while I would watch in amusement. I would watch them manage fabric, hand-stitch material and use different stone work. Although I loved it all, I never really knew that this was something I would do passionately later in life.

I studied in Paris, completed my Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Master’s in Quality Management. I worked for almost four years in the same field. Soon I realized I needed to travel and surprisingly landed in Dubai, where I discovered the need for kaftan, real ones and my destiny.

So how did you get into the kaftan design business?

SELMA BENOMAR

Moroccan kaftan in itself is a luxury outfit. When I came to Dubai, there wasn’t really any luxury brand for Moroccan kaftans so it was my goal to have a trusted luxury kaftan brand available to people here. It’s a traditional outfit usually but I did it in a trendy, modern way – from cuts to fabrics. It was my vision to present this in a more up-to-date manner and follow fashion trends.

How would you describe your style of fashion and your designs?

If you compare my designs to traditional Moroccan kaftans, my designs are very light in embroidery. I like simplicity above all. Saying that, I think I am most inspired by two factors.

Firstly, my Moroccan heritage which is a big influence; but also, living in Paris for ten years has a great influence on my designing style because I put the European simplicity into the traditional Moroccan kaftans.

What materials, fabrics and colours did you use in the new collection?

Simply Beautiful When it comes to luxury kaftans, few can rival the Moroccan designs of Selma Benomar. By combining her Moroccan heritage, European influence and South East Asian inspiration, Selma Benomar creates simple, lightweight kaftans that are bang on trend.

As most of my clients are based in hot countries, my choice for fabrics is limited as I cannot use a lot of heavy fabrics because of the climate. Even though Moroccan kaftans are known to be heavy and luxurious, mine are not. I always choose light fabrics; I work a lot with chiffon, flowy crape and organza. These are materials I work with in most collections.

How can a woman choose the perfect kaftan?

The same as every outfit; the same way you choose a dress or a suit. As they are a kind of dress, you need to make sure you choose the right cut for your body and the best possible colours for your skin tone. It is very important to have in mind the colours which go best with your skin regardless of what is trending. Make sure you are comfortable with your measurements and sizing. We always advise the customer based on what they like and what suits them. It is not always easy to convince a customer totally against what she likes but it is best to get expert advice from a stylist especially for women who are not aware of what suits them best. This will further guarantee that the piece fits them well in every way.

How would you describe your own personal style?

I like to wear simple stuff. I love simplicity in general. I don’t like complicated and heavy outfits and this shows in my designs too.

Where can people buy your kaftans?

They can buy them at Selma Benomar Atelier, located in the heart of Dubai.

Can you talk to us a bit about your upcoming projects?

For the past five years, we’ve focused on the GCC market; the next five will be focused internationally. Saying that, I do have my range for the next season coming up, I am always on the go, travelling to South East Asia to get inspired by the natural beauty there. So something will be out soon - stay tuned!

You have already achieved so much in your young career, but what would you say is your ultimate goal in life?

How did you go about achieving your level of success? We want the secrets!

I believe each person has their own challenges in life and that’s why ‘the secret’ to success differs for everyone. For me, it was a matter of time, realizing that my education and work in the quality management field was not my real passion. I had not realized that my Moroccan heritage and childhood memories of watching kaftans being made were what I was meant to do. Once I realized that, things fell in to frame. I would also add, if it weren’t for the city of Dubai, the wonderful city that it is, I would not have come to terms with the image of kaftans to the outside world and the lack of good, luxury Moroccan kaftan.

If you could say one thing to women out there to inspire them on their journey to success, what would it be?

I know most women have different roles to play - mom, wife, daughter, sister - and as women we tend to sometimes overlook what we really want because of our duties and responsibilities. Although this is a trait that we must be proud of, we should also remember that some things are done for the greater good. If you choose to follow your passion today, following your dream might lead to so many people around you achieving something, be it big or small. You may see a good number of energized, motivated women pouring their energy and their passion into manifesting their future and the future of their loved, as opposed to being disappointed or let down. So keep going!

To achieve anything, you must be prepared to work hard and never lose the passion you have. You must continue to work with the same passion regardless of success or failure. This is my ultimate goal, I think. To maintain the passion I have for what I do. To see art, creativity and inspiration all around me and produce it passionately based on my perception.

Do you have a favourite quote you would like to share with us?

I believe in investing your time in good things that you are dedicated towards and that eventually those things will benefit you and will be associated with you. In simple terms, I believe that if you invest good effort into what you love, eventually it will take care of you. Do what you love and never work a day in your life!

W

hen it comes to cars, I have to be honest and say I’ve always taken a practical approach, tending towards realism instead of fantasy; need rather than desire. And so, from the time I first passed my driving test at age 17, the majority of my cars have been nice, safe, family saloons; mostly with four doors for ease of passenger access but all, without exception, having a capacity to seat five or more adults in relative comfort. The ability for my cars to be able to carry stuff was paramount, whether that “stuff” was people, shopping bags, luggage, pets, or any combination of the aforementioned. Over the years I have treated myself to a variety of nice, reliable, family sedans, as well as a campervan which I thought would be great for holidays with my friends.

Moving to The Netherlands in the late ‘90s I became a bit more adventurous, dabbling with a couple of more sporty brands, though of course both conformed to my desire for space. My current wheels of preference are attached to a midsized SUV, which fulfils all my requirements and keeps me happy. However, you cannot imagine my excitement when I was extended the opportunity to road-test a Porsche for this magazine’s issue – my heart skipped a beat as I imagined getting behind the steering wheel of one of my favourite SUV models of choice, either a Macan or a Cayenne!

On collecting my car for this road-test, however, my expectations were intensified when I realised that the car I am about to drive for the weekend is from the Porsche iconic 911 range. The Porsche 911 Carrera presented to me was, it has to be said, an apparition of absolute beauty. The distinctive and unmistakeably aerodynamic lines which Porsche first projected on to the roads in the early ‘60s have since been developed and refined almost to perfection. On viewing the stunning test model in shining silver, I began to sense that I was going to be taken well outside of my comfort-zone … yet I experienced a tingle down my spine and an involuntary grin as I prepared to experience a new adventure.

The years have not been kind to me so, for a man of my stature (who likes his food too much but dislikes exercise), getting in and out of any sports car is not going to be straightforward or easy, and the Carrera did not let me down in this regard.

But once in the cockpit it was a simple task to touch some buttons and adjust the seat to obtain the ultimate driving position, such that I soon felt that the comfortable leather seat - in this case a warm shade of dark red – had been moulded around me. Familiarising myself with the controls, it was clear that everything had been positioned to enhance the driving

experience, allowing the driver to have full access and control whilst limiting distractions and retaining focus on the road. All set to go, the three-litre six-cylinder engine with bi-turbo charging roared into life and provided me with an instant thrill as I accelerated to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds, thanks to the amazing Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) feature and the Sport Chrono Package. I was beginning to wonder exactly what I had been missing all my life!

The roads here in Kuwait are not conducive to providing the ultimate driving experience, so I knew from the outset that I would not be able to put any car fully through all its paces, let alone one with such calibre and breeding as the Carrera (top speed of 295 km/h). But with so much power under my control I continued my drive with some caution, although the vehicle is well-equipped with front and rear cameras and, seemingly, sensors all around such that whenever another or object got too close I would hear and see the glowing warning indicator in the car's mirror triangle and receive a warning notification on the information screen, all of which gave me comfort.

The overall ride was a lot smoother and more comfortable than I had expected, and I drove in auto-shift mode which is better suited to the Kuwait driving conditions. I was aware that the Carrera has an awesome gearbox and can easily imagine the excitement of using its 7-speed gearbox to push the car around the hilly and twisty roads in my native British countryside.

Now, the kind people at Porsche Centre Kuwait also provided me with a stack of technical data and performance specifications ‌ but I shall beg their forgiveness for not including any of this in my brief report. Such information is easily accessible on the internet, or obtainable from the Porsche showroom. What I will tell you is that the car hugs the road and its handling is superb; the infotainment system is the best I’ve encountered; the aircon was really effective, which is so important for our hot summers; the sound system was earsplittingly amazing; the fuel economy was surprisingly frugal; and that overall this car offers the most exciting driving experience!

I had fallen in love with my ride, and it would have been so easy to slip behind the wheel and drive off into the sunset, but the next day our Editor insisted on doing a photoshoot. Admittedly I am not model-quality (and the piece would have needed to be titled Beauty & the Beast instead of Beauty in the City had I selfishly kept the car to myself) so we decided to bring our team member Haya and let her also experience driving the car to move around some of the photogenic locations in Kuwait and capture the experience with an amazing photoshoot.

As Mister Practical, I had realised that I would not be able to seat 5 adults in comfort, drive to the airport with all my luggage, or even fit my weekly food shopping in the luggage space ‌. but who cares when you get this much excitement in one beautiful package? My zest for driving has been re-kindled; life is for living.

The one downside for me is that my adventure was too short-lived.

I think I probably need to conduct a year-long test to fully appreciate and review this awesome car. So, Mr Porsche ... what are the chances? www.cpmagazine.net

Birthday Cake

Steps: 1-Preheat oven to 180 degrees C. Grease and flour a 23cm x 23cm cake pan.

2- Cream together the sugar and butter. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

3- Combine flour and baking powder, add to the creamed mixture and mix well.

ince May is the month of special birthdays to me – it’s my husband's birthday, my first baby girl's birthday and I am expecting my second child in May too - I decided to make a birthday themed cake this month. This particular cake contains vanilla, chocolate, Oreo, cookies, sprinkles, icecream, brownies and hot fudge. All the good things in life! It’s one of my favourite flavours, if not my number one favourite ever!

You will need: l l l l l l l l l l l l

1 cup icing sugar 125g butter 2 eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 1/2 cups flour 1 3/4 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 cup milk Crushed Oreo cookies Sprinkles Readymade brownies or chocolate cake (cut into small cubes) Chocolate and vanilla ice cream (to be used as filling and topping) Hot fudge sauce

4- Stir in the milk until mixture is smooth. Add the Oreo cookies, brownies, and sprinkles to the mixture. Pour into the prepared pan.

5- Bake in a preheated oven for 30 to 40 minutes. The cake is done when it springs back to the touch.

6- Let your cake rest and cool for an hour then slice it for filling.

7- Mix the vanilla ice cream with Oreo cookies, brownies and sprinkles then start filling the cake.

8- Finally, cover your cake with chocolate ice-cream (make sure

it's creamy and soft) keep it in the freezer when done, covering until serving. Add garnish right before serving and serve with hot fudge sauce on the side.

You get messy and creative with the decorating - I tried this recipe to make cupcakes and discovered that kids loved them more!

HOW TO KEEP YOUR METABOLISM HIGH DURING RAMADAN

R

amadan can be a golden opportunity to benefit your weight and detox your body, provided you eat right. Fasting is a challenge and affects your body in many ways. Your body undergoes quite a drastic change from receiving food and water on a regular basis to not receiving anything for an extended amount of time; it understandably causes a shock to the system. Your body becomes unsure whether food will be readily available and as a result of this, tries to reserve as much energy as possible by slowing down your metabolism.

Your metabolism is the speed at which your body converts food into energy. A slow metabolism means that the food is converted into energy much slower, which can result in weight gain particularly after Ramadan when normal eating habits are resumed. Therefore it is important that during Ramadan you undertake measures to keep your metabolism as normal as possible. Remember, there is no need to consume the same amount of food as regular days, because during Ramadan you have a less active lifestyle which means you use less energy.

Six steps to control your metabolism during Ramadan:

1.A meal should be a meal and not a feast.

Eat enough but don't overload yourself with food as a result of feeling very hungry after fasting. Eat healthy, try to have vegetables and fruits in your diet and switch to lean meats (grilled fish, lean beef, skinless chicken - always remove any visible fat before cooking).Try to have less fat content in your meals (baking or grilling instead of frying, no added margarine or butter, measure the oil in spoonfuls instead of just pouring it from the bottle) and avoid simple sugars by shifting to complex carbohydrates which are rich in fiber, such as those found in grains and seeds. For example, whole-wheat bread, beans, fruits and vegetables should be eaten, particularly during suhoor. Fiber-rich foods help increase the feeling of fullness, promote good blood glucose levels and help with regularity. Fasting during the day can also increase stomach acid content and cause feelings of pain or discomfort. High-fiber foods during 114

dinner can help neutralize this acid and alleviate pain. Eat more protein. This is good for your metabolism; in addition, protein is a muscle builder. Lean protein is better – more good stuff for fewer calories. Your body takes a bit more work to burn this stuff too.

Avoid: lFried and fatty foods such as French fries, sweets, fried sambousa, greasy curries and biryani. High-fat foods are high in calories and are nutrient deficient which will lead to an imbalanced diet, thereby increasing sluggishness and fatigue during Ramadan. lSalt and salted food, such as pickles, high salt sauces (barbeque, soy, teriyaki), nuts, chips and olives. Dehydration is a risk due to limited fluid intake during the day; high salt foods can further increase this risk by drawing fluids out of your body. lFoods containing too much sugar such as sweet glucose energy drinks. These are sources of empty calories with very little nutritional value. While they may provide you with instant energy, they will not sustain you through the day and night. lOvereating especially at suhoor can cause further metabolic imbalance, like highs and lows in your blood sugar and dehydration. lToo much tea or caffeine at suhoor. Both of these are diuretics when consumed in large quantities and the body can lose valuable minerals, salts and fluids that you need during the day.

2.Eat more frequently but smaller meals.

Try to eat 4-5 small meals during the night. By getting food into your body regularly, you keep your metabolism firing and leave your body in a much better state to burn some energy for you.

And whenever you eat only one big meal at futoor, your body immediately stores it as fat for fear of starvation.

Eat slowly and chew food well. Because you have not eaten all day, there will be a tendency to want to eat a large quantity of food quickly. Remember that it takes twenty minutes for your stomach to tell your brain that you are full - put small portions on your plate first.

3.Increase incidental physical activity.

Do some cardio work outs. Being active will automatically give

a short term boost to your metabolism. For example, park your car a little further away than normal and walk; and take the stairs occasionally. Just by simply being more active which is called incidental activity, you will get an increase in your metabolism. Walking, brisk walking, jogging and cycling are other cardio workouts that can be done in Ramadan to increase your metabolism.

4.Do some weight training after futoor.

Even if you only lift light weights, weight training is the ultimate exercise for firing up your metabolism. The more intense your exercise and the more muscles you get involved, the better metabolism increase you will get. The more muscle mass you have, the higher your metabolism will be. However, make sure you do them after your futoor, not on an empty stomach.

5.Drink much water.

It is advisable to consume at least 8-12 cups so that your body may adjust fluid levels in time for the next day.

6.Make sure to have enough sleep.

If your body is exhausted then the efficiency with which it burns calories goes down. A well rested body is more efficient. Fasting neither affects the quality of sleep nor does it cause excessive sleepiness during the day. The sleep changes at Ramadan could be a result of the change in the lifestyle during the fasting month.

Consequently, people are recommended to get sufficient sleep at night and sleep in the day for a short time. In addition, excessive eating at night, particularly prior to sleep leads to sleep disorders and an increase of the acid influx into esophagus, which affects the sleep quality.

In conclusion, getting trapped in the empty promises of fad diets and misconceptions will result in poor health outcomes and in a slow metabolism that will have you rebound all your lost weight a few weeks after Ramadan is over. There’s always a way to modify such meals or to have control over how often they are served. The key is variety, frequency and portions! Ramadan Kareem! www.cpmagazine.net

Volvo Cars, the premium car maker, has announced that its luxury Sedan Volvo S90, was named Best Midsize Premium Sedan at the Middle East Car of the Year (MECOTY) Awards, held alongside the 2nd International Motor Show, Abu Dhabi.

The Volvo S90 win at MECOTY awards, the largest and most coveted of the regional automotive industry, comes after XC90’s success at several leading global motoring awards last year. XC90 was named Best Medium Premium SUV at MECOTY and jury prize in 2016.

Other regional awards received by the S90 so far include those from Arab Wheels, Automobile Magazine and Future TV.
