GET IN ON THE PRACTICES OF POSITIVE PEOPLE AND CHANGE YOUR LIFE!
Noelle Elsaadany
I
n life, we come across two kinds of people. The first group is generally optimistic. They tend to see the brighter sides. The second rarely look at the positives, but always point out negatives. These are called pessimists and you can bet on them complaining about life. What a downer! We attract what we put out in the world. Positive people tend to embrace the cup being half full, instead of half empty. They also have better success. These folks usually follow habits focused on positive outcomes so check out this comprehensive list of practices.
resentment. Who has time for that? It blocks positive energy every time. Forgive people so you can move on and invite positivity in. You may find this one hard to fight but it’s okay, you’re worth it. Allow yourself the blessing and let go of anger that serves no purpose other than to bring you down. Nobody’s perfect and people deserve second chances most of the time. You don’t have to re-enter a friendship with someone who has hurt you, but do let go.
1-Don’t Assume the Worst
Respect goes a long way, for ourselves and others. Self-respect is everything. With it, you can slay dragons. You will know when to tell people that you aren’t interested, instead of playing games. Respect for others means we respect their boundaries. Positive people understand this. Be grateful for small successes and big ones. Be humble, no-one likes a jerk! Treat people with kindness. It boils down to treating people the way we want to be treated and demanding the same in return.
Positive people don’t assume the worst. They approach situations with the best outcome in mind. They avoid jumping to conclusions before allowing negativity to take over. It’s hard work but has positive outcomes. If you’re prone to thoughts of doom the minute things don’t go your way, you’re not living. Allow yourself to believe and know that you deserve good things. It can be hard if you’ve been hit with back-to-back trauma but be encouraged to develop practices that change your thought process.
2-Realize the Truth
5-You Don’t Have Problems, You Have Challenges
Positive people deal in the real. They don’t allow themselves to get caught up in denial. Some things in life are unpleasant, that’s a fact. Admitting the truth of a situation opens the door for positivity and logic to work their magic. The truth will set you free.
Positive people aren’t oblivious to problems, they just choose to view them as challenges and opportunities to grow. While it may feel good initially, blowing up and having a complete meltdown doesn’t help. Thinking of ways to employ the best outcome is better for emotional health.
3-Control Resentment
To summarize, incorporating the practices of positive people allows your inner light to shine! Let’s do it!
Hanging onto baggage that has brought you down before can cause 14

DANCING IN THE RAIN Eman Alawadh
‘Do you remember who you were, before the world told you who you should be?’ - Danielle LaPorte
D
o you remember what brought you joy? Do you remember the things you wanted to do with your life before the world, before society, suggested you should want something else?
It’s hard sometimes to look back and remember when you changed or what instigated the change in you. Life nowadays is fast-paced. Everyone is rushing off to get somewhere, convinced that that somewhere is where their happiness will be found. If you’ve seen ‘Eat, Pray, Love’, you will remember the scene when Elizabeth Gilbert stays up in the middle of the night, crying, not knowing why she no longer wanted her life the way it was, even though she had been an active partner in building that life with her husband. She felt she’d been swept away with everything and that she should want it even though it brought her no happiness. I relate to her character a lot because I too once found myself up at the dead of night with everyone asleep, oblivious to my tears and desperation. At first I wasn’t sure why I felt that way. Something must be wrong with me, I thought. Otherwise why would I be so miserable with all the blessings around me? I had a great job in one of the best industries in the country. I had a loving husband and two beautiful children after a journey through infertility. I had my own business. So why was I so unhappy? I remember sitting on the bathroom floor choking on my tears, hoping no-one would hear me. Like Liz, I felt helpless and asked God why I felt so hollow. And, like Liz, there was no magical answer, just silence and a realization that this was silly, I should go back to bed. But when I stood up to wash my face, I stopped. I took a long look in the mirror and asked myself, ‘What do you want?’ And I found that I was lost. I no longer remembered what it felt like to want something badly. I forgot that I had the right to my own desires. I had been so swept up in my roles as mother, wife, daughter, sibling and employee, that I forgot what it was to strip away all those roles and simply be me. The roles that we have should never define us. They are a part of us. We should not let them bury who we are underneath and let ourselves disappear. So I decided I needed to step away. Not to abandon my roles - they were all still very important to me - but to step back and take care of myself; to run away from my roles towards finding and recreating who I am. What I did was simple, but changed me irreversibly. I took 16

a short trip to London completely on my own. It wasn’t my destination that brought on the change in me, but the fact that I had decided to be present in every moment of it. I had come across an incredible book right before my trip - ‘The Power of Now’ by Eckhart Tolle - and I have never been the same since. Eckhart teaches you to stop and ask yourself, ‘What is my problem right now? What’s wrong with this exact moment?’ and to shift your thinking. If you feel unpleasant at any moment you have three choices. You can remove yourself from the situation, change it, or accept it. As he goes on to explain, anything else is insanity. He also goes on to teach you to enjoy every moment no matter what situation you are in. Because this moment, your now, will never come back again. I had been to London countless times before, but I had never seen it the way I had this time. I was present. I noticed the little details one usually overlooks when rushing to get somewhere. I made pleasant conversations with complete strangers and met two people I am still in touch with. I can’t describe the unexpected pleasure it brought me. I was walking down the street one afternoon. It was raining and busy and I smelt something heavenly. I wasn't sure what it was but I followed the smell until I found a tiny hidden booth making fresh waffles. I asked the baker for his recommendation, and, with a scoop of chocolate (because, why not?) I stood there on the corner of the block, eating the sinful waffle in the rain. I felt like the happiest, goofiest, fat kid on earth and it felt so good.
I decided, since I was getting wet anyway, I might as well feel the rain. Passersby probably thought I was crazy but I was just high on this carefree feeling! There’s something magical about standing in the rain if you let yourself get lost in it. There’s a pleasure I cannot find the words to describe. You have to experience it yourself, sitting in a small cafe in the middle of nowhere watching people. I realized that for a long time I had been pressuring myself to achieve so many things that I had forgotten to enjoy the journey. After all, that’s what life is, a journey. We get so busy with planning and imagining our destinations, convincing ourselves that is what will bring us happiness. Whether it’s when we make a certain amount of money, reach a certain body weight, have the house of our dreams, or find the right person to share our lives with, we get so busy trying to reach that destination we often forget we have a right to be happy every step of the way.
I knew that for sure at that point, because I already had so many of the things I had worked for in my life and, as humbled as I was for the blessings, I was unable to feel true joy and fulfillment because, until then, I had not realized that happiness is something within you. It’s not something you bring to yourself from the outside. Too often we take ourselves for granted and don’t even notice how harsh we are on ourselves. Unless we learn to treat ourselves right, we won’t have a healthy precedent to set for anyone else around us. I have only now come to realize the value of this idea. And you can never love anyone else right unless you first learn to take care of yourself. As you often hear before a flight, ‘Help yourself before seeking to help others.’ Overall, I would recommend that everyone try it. If you can’t arrange to travel alone, take a day off wherever you are and disconnect yourself. Discover a part of your town you’ve never wandered into. Talk to someone you usually wouldn’t interact with. Do one small thing every day that pulls you out of your comfort zone. You will be delighted with what you find. www.cpmagazine.net

AMSTERDAM AND BEYOND

M
ost people, at the mention of the Netherlands, usually think of Amsterdam. The capital city of Holland does, after all, attract over 4.5 million visitors every year. Many are there to experience the active and diverse nightlife (legalised prostitution and marijuana dens, included). But Amsterdam isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Let’s be honest, its reputation is enough to ensure that many don’t even step out of Schiphol Airport. But there’s more to Amsterdam than the Red Light District. For example, did you know it has over 60 miles of canals and more than 1,500 bridges? (It’s not called the Venice of the North for nothing). There are also more than 880,000 bicycles. Over 8,000 are parked at Amsterdam Central Station on a daily basis – quite a spectacle and well worth a photograph or two. There’s also plenty of culture and history in Amsterdam. The Rijksmuseum, for example, first opened its doors in 1885 and is now home to the largest and most important collection of classical Dutch art, including works by Rembrandt. Van Gogh is also particularly popular is Amsterdam (he actually lived there for a while) and the Van Gogh Museum is dedicated to his work. Sunflowers, arguably his most famous painting, is on display there. What a feeling to be standing in the same room as such a masterpiece, 18

admiring every stroke, every shade of this classic work of art. Ann Frank House offers another glimpse back in time. The house is where Ann Frank, a young Jewish girl, was hidden from the Nazis during World War II. The house, now a museum, opened in 1960 and shows her hiding place behind a large, moveable bookcase. It’s one thing reading about such hardship and terror, but to stand in the shoes of those involved is another thing entirely. Understandably, the house is a very popular tourist attraction so be warned, even though you book and pay for your timeslot on line, you may still be faced with lengthy queues. Another favourite with tourists is the Maritime Museum. Situated close to Dam Central Station it’s very easy to spot – just look for the replica sailing ship outside. The museum includes exhibits on a variety of themes including ‘Port 24/7’, ‘The Navigational Instruments’ and ‘Voyage at Sea’. There’s plenty to keep the kids amused too. From shipping to shopping, Amsterdam has it all. Jordaan is an especially charming neighbourhood boasting independent art galleries and unique shops as well as some of the most desirable residences in the city. Its maze of narrow streets is also dotted with a fine selection of restaurants. ‘9 Streets’ is another quirky area known for its vintage and designer shopping. It certainly makes a change from the predictable chain-store experience in Kalverstraat.
with some reluctance that we bid farewell to this pretty little fishing town. But not before stumbling across a hidden gem in the high street. This particular store was brimful of vintage clothing, shoes, handbags and hats. Entering the store was like opening a chest full of treasure; a treat for the eyes and pure indulgence for the imagination. This wasn’t your average second-hand store; the goods were high-end, top-quality, with a price tag to match. I could easily have lost myself among the rails of coats, beneath the rims of hats, or by stepping into the kitten heels of those who had walked before me. If only I’d had more time....
Talking of Kalverstraat, just behind the mayhem of this crowded shopping metropolis, you’ll find the oldest wooden house in Amsterdam (built in 1528). It forms part of the Begijnhof, a group of medieval court houses formerly home to the Beguines – a community of unmarried, religious women. For obvious reasons, their time was limited, but their legacy remains and includes a hidden church, built after the ban on their Catholic faith in the sixteenth century. It’s a far cry from the more commercial, liberal side of Amsterdam. Holland is also famous for its tulips and what better place to see them than Bloemenmarkt - the world’s only floating flower market? You can also take a trip to Bollenstreek to see the flowers at their beautiful best, stretched across miles and miles of open fields, as far as the eye can see. You need to time your trip right though. Springtime is the best time to catch these colourful blooms – and don’t forget your camera! Another of Holland’s attractions is its windmills and Amsterdam itself is home to two of these beauties. Molen van Sloten mill is a 19th century polder draining mill and a guided tour allows you to trace the history of the mill. Or, if you’re lucky, you may get to witness a wedding ceremony as it’s now possible to get married at the windmill. The second mill, De Otter mill, was built around 1630 and is a twenty minute walk from Dam Square. It’s the only woodsawing mill of its kind still in operation and well worth a visit. Imagine seeing those sails in operation, hearing them slice through the air and feeling the wind on your face.
Our next destination was Marken. This was the perfect place to find two more typically Dutch products – clogs and cheese. Whether you wanted to wear them or hang your keys from them, there were clogs of all shapes, sizes and colours. You could even visit the clog making workshop. Similarly, the choice of cheese was astounding – the free samples alone were enough to keep us going until dinner time – and we couldn’t resist buying at least one mouthwatering variety to bring home. Marken itself is a traditional, quaint village known for its wooden houses, many of which are built on stilts. It was once an island, completely surrounded by water, but is now connected to the mainland by a causeway. It has a lighthouse, Het Paad van Marken (the Marken Horse) which dates back to 1859 and is still used today. It’s possible to walk the entire perimeter of Marken - about 9 kilometres; the perfect way to appreciate this charming Dutch haven. Again, we were welcomed with efficient hospitality and enjoyed an afternoon beside the waterland, admiring the boats and basking in the warm, spring sunshine. Definitely a day to remember. Many people take a boat trip from Market to Volendam, another example of the ‘real Holland’. It takes just twenty minutes and allows you, amongst other things, to witness cheese making and a fish auction – a treat for more than one of the senses, I would imagine! Time restraints prevented us from taking the trip this time but at least we have an excuse to return. Because, as this trip reminded us, Amsterdam isn’t just for overexcited youth looking for kicks. It offers so much more than its reputation will have us believe. Beyond the crowded, noisy city centre streets, Amsterdam really does have something for everyone and I, for one, am looking forward to finding out what my next visit has to offer.
During my last, most recent trip to Amsterdam, I decided to stay outside of the city centre. Bus travel in and around the city is cheap, safe and convenient and the choice of accommodation for our party of seven was less restricted (and less expensive) away from the city. Having explored Amsterdam numerous times before, we looked to our host for new ideas and inspiration. His first suggestion was a trip to Monnickendam, a short bus journey from our apartment. This picturesque town was the polar opposite of its boisterous, noisy neighbour and gave us a taste of the ‘real Holland’. Its immaculate terraced houses, quaint street market and elegant, historic bell tower afforded plenty of opportunity for photographs before being spoilt for choice with the water-side cafes and restaurants. The Dutch hospitality was particularly welcoming and it was www.cpmagazine.net

IF YOU CAN’T STAND THE HEAT...
T
he list of old English idioms and phrases is endless. My grandmother would often come out with something that left me completely clueless. Even after she tried to explain what the expression meant, I was still none the wiser. ‘I’m not as black as you paint me’ was a favourite of hers and perhaps one of the more easy to understand. Simply translated it means, ‘I’m not as bad as you think I am’. ‘Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth’ was another. In other words, ‘If you’re given a gift, accept it with good grace and do not find fault with it.’ ‘If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen’ is another well used phrase and one that I often use myself, particularly here in Kuwait. It’s pretty self explanatory although ‘the heat’ could be anything (the pressure, the stress, the pace) and ‘kitchen’ could actually be any room, any place, anywhere. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve heard people complaining about Kuwait. They complain about the heat, the lack of entertainment, the traffic, the supermarkets, the cats, the beaches..... In fact, the list is endless. Whenever someone complains about my adoptive country, I immediately spring to its defence. For every perceived negative, there is always a positive and one thing I learned very early on was that it’s all about attitude. I’m definitely a ‘glass half full’ kind of girl. In other words, I’m an optimist who chooses to focus on the positive. 20
MAY 2018
Others, however, are the ‘glass half empty’ kind and will always find fault or something to complain about. But what’s the point of frowning when you can smile instead? Why waste time looking for something or someone to criticise when you can offer a kind word or compliment? All too often I hear people grumbling because there’s nothing to do in Kuwait. Seriously? There’s plenty to do in Kuwait you just have to go out there and find it. They complain about the heat (hello, this is the Middle East!), the food (unbelievable), the roads (spare a thought for those having to walk), the cats (they were here before you were), etc, etc, etc. Another common complaint is one relating to weight; typically, ‘I’ve put so much weight on since I moved to Kuwait.’ Well, there’s only one person to blame for that! You can’t blame Kuwait for offering giant sized portions or a delicious selection of cakes. You have to take control of your own diet choices and make sure you get some exercise. Many expats use the heat as an excuse not to exercise but there are plenty of exercises you can do indoors. Most of the time it’s laziness that prevents people from exercising so they choose to blame Kuwait for their expanding waistline, rather than their own lack of discipline. My simple response to these negative people who disrespect this wonderful country is simple. ‘If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.’ No-one is forcing you to stay. Take your negative attitude elsewhere and let the rest of us enjoy everything that Kuwait has to offer.

Mystic And Mystery Unfold To Reveal SUV Convenience of Porsche Cayenne S
The absolute opposite of ordinary
Since its late 1966 debut, Maserati Ghibli has consistently pushed against the boundaries of the sports-car universe. This quintessential Italian sports tourer legend has just been treated to an extensive round of revisions to mark its midlife facelift. Most noticeable changes are to the exterior styling. They’re subtle, yet effective. It's been given a new bumper, some neat LED headlights and a little more horsepower, among other things. More work has been done under the skin, though. It’s rare that you have the opportunity to explore a vehicle as grand as the Porsche Cayenne S. Love At First Sight The day begins for Carla like any other day, except today she had traded in her ride for the very fashionforward Porsche Cayenne S SUV. This German-made vehicle is based on the sporty Porsche 911 but retains some SUV qualities that make it fun to drive and carry everything you need along the way too. This was a good thing because Carla had quite the day planned for her and Marie. To start her ride with the Porsche Cayenne S, Carla opened the passenger door and noticed the luxury the vehicle offered from the very start. It exuded driver confidence and greeted Carla warmly. She knew she was in for a treat with this luxurious SUV when she saw the Porsche Advanced Cockpit. Nestled in the dash panel was 12.3 in full HD touchscreen that gave Carla a feeling of excitement as she knew this would be the heart of the vehicle. The Porsche Advanced Cockpit allows for voice commands or intuitive touch operation. Users can access services as well as the Internet through the device as well as navigation management and control. The driver’s dash also displayed that classic Porsche tachometer and two 7-inch full HD displays for complete viewing of all the vehicle systems and functions while driving. The display also includes Night Vision Assist with thermal imaging cameras for better viewing in the dark as well as a myriad of assist functions for parking, lane changes, traffic, and cruise options. The exterior of the vehicle was just as refined. The Porsche Cayenne S featured new horizontal lighting edges for a wider and athletic stance. The length was increased by 63 mm while retaining the same wheelbase of 2,895 mm. Roof height was also adjusted and reduced by a total of 9 mm. Dimensions
of the vehicle are 4,918 mm long by 1,983 mm wide. This aids in the use of the 770 L luggage compartment which Carla and Marie were going to fill quickly after their shopping trip. This is an increase of 100 L for the vehicle, making it even more convenient to run errands daily. The Porsche Cayenne S combines the performance of a sports car with the capabilities of an off-road vehicle and the luxury of a touring car. It has a lighter chassis base and gets its high-performance abilities from the multilink rear axle and front axle engineered with a separator link. New mixed tires round out the package along with providing more stability and road grip when driving. Wheel sizes are up to 21 inches as an option for the Cayenne.
Plenty of Power As Carla turned the engine on, she heard that familiar Porsche roar. The Porsche Cayenne S comes fully equipped with a six-cylinder engine. Carla and Marie's Cayenne S was equipped with a 2.9 L V6 twin-turbocharged engine rated a powerful 440 hp. This is an increase of 20 hp over previous Porsche Cayenne S model. The engine achieves a torque of 550 Nm. With this V6 engine, the Porsche Cayenne S has the ability to reach speeds as high as 265 km/h. Its Cayenne counterpart features a 3 L turbo engine rated 340 hp. This is a 40 hp boost over its predecessors for more power and performance out of the SUV. Torque rating on the base Porsche Cayenne model is 450 Nm. And, Carla was off to pick up Marie. The two had a busy day ahead and needed to get started straight away. They headed to a local cafĂŠ in the heart of www.cpmagazine.net

Kuwait to work for a few hours. This gave both women a chance to really see what the Porsche Cayenne S was made of. The vehicle has the ability to go from zero to 100 km/h in less than five seconds (with the Sport Chrono Package), so Carla knew there would be no chance that she would be late. The twin-turbo engine matched well with the new eight-speed Tiptronic S gearbox transmission. It gave faster starts, quicker response, and provided a better ratio for an all over sporty vehicle feeling when driving the SUV. The eight gear is part of the gearbox that allows for low torque, better fuel usage, and a more relaxed driving feel, which the ladies could definitely appreciate.
Bumpy Roads Ahead They knew that Kuwait would be congested this time of morning and they needed to make sure that the SUV could easily make its way around the obstacles that they would soon find themselves in. Sure enough, roadwork ahead! Carla put the Porsche Cayenne S into off-road mode, and it was smooth sailing through the rock and rubble. Off-road mode is pre-programmed for easy management of rough terrain. The Porsche Cayenne S offers four modes – mud, gravel, sand or rocks – to allow for complete customization of the SUV's performance on off-road terrain. In addition, the transmission, chassis, and differential locks can be tuned to the exact conditions of the road, which really help Carla and Maria traverse the
36

rough gravely area of the roadwork. The ride over the bumpy terrain was only more enhanced by the Porsche 4D Chassis Control System. This allowed for real-time optimization of the Porsche Cayenne S, including the rear axle steering which really allowed Carla to control the vehicle along with many twists and turns she encountered on the way to the café. Even the brakes on the Porsche Cayenne S are topnotch with the Porsche Surface Coated Brake on the vehicle. These high-performance brakes are an option for the Cayenne, but the SUV that Carla and Marie drove included them and the women were glad to have that extra safety precaution to rely on that incorporated cast-iron discs with a tungsten-carbide coating. This is designed to increase friction and reduce wear and brake dust. The brake calipers on the Porsche Cayenne S also add a nice touch with a sporty white hue with a gloss coating. Also supporting the Porsche Cayenne S is the option of an adaptive air suspension with threechamber technology – a new feature for the SUV. This is designed to increase the gap between driving a sporty vehicle and riding like a touring car. The system works by making adjustments while driving for rough terrain. The vehicle also offers an optional Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control roll stabilization to soften the ride even further. Drivers can switch from hydraulic to electric operation with the system for even shorter response times and precision when driving. It really makes those bumpy rides more comfortable as Carla, and Marie found out through the road construction they traveled.
Time For Some Shopping
Partying In Style
Both Carla and Marie spent some time grinding their gears at the café but just couldn’t keep their eyes off the Porsche Cayenne S. It gleamed in the sunlight and just commanded an air of respect. Built with a steel and alloy construction, the Porsche Cayenne S has an all-aluminum exterior to give it that lightweight feel. Alloy is used in the floorpan assembly, front section, and almost all of the chassis components. The empty weight of the vehicle is 1985 kg - a reduction from the previous 2040 kg of the previous generation. A good portion of the weight savings of the Porsche Cayenne S occurred from the lithium-ion polymer starter battery that saved a total of 10 kg in vehicle weight vs. previous battery models. As hard as they tried, they knew it was time to jump back in for another ride. This worked out well for the ladies that needed to head to the local mall to find an outfit that could stand up next to such a fine automobile for the shoot. They used the ParkAssist feature to get a good spot by the mall, and Marie was even able to check some emails on the way with the WiFi hotspot included. It was a nice ride to the mall as Carla and Marie were able to get a good feel for how the Porsche Cayenne S handled. They also took advantage of the Sport Chrono Package outfitted on the SUV. This gave them the option to drive in normal, sport, or sport plus modes. They even configured their own mode to give the trip some adventure and utilise the new Cayenne’s full driving dynamics. It was a nice day too, and Marie and Carla were able to enjoy the Porsche Communication Management and listen to their favorite music using the new sound system from Bose. A Burmester system can also be spec’d with the SUV. The ladies also noticed that even though they were all day with the Porsche Cayenne S, they had only consumed a small amount of fuel. The Cayenne S vehicle has a combined fuel consumption rate of 9.4-9.21/100 km. It is also an environmentally friendly vehicle which Carla and Marie both liked.
Shopping was exhausting for Marie and Carla, and they were glad to be back in the comfort of the Porsche Cayenne S. With outfits in hand and a party planned for the night, Carla and Marie had some primping to do. They parked the Porsche Cayenne S and got ready at Marie’s residence for the trip. Dressed head-to-toe in glam, the ladies were ready for a night of fun. They headed off to the event and were delighted they had the Porsche Cayenne S to mark their arrival. The vehicle’s Baskaya Blue exterior paint shimmered in the light of the cameras that lined the red carpet that welcomed them to the movie premiere. After a long night of fun, Carla and Marie were ready to call it a night. They headed to the Porsche Cayenne S and stopped for a minute to take one last look at the vehicle in all its glory. They both were in agreement that the Porsche Cayenne S has all the

features they desired for every day use and plenty of fun packed in every drive. The SUV light up the night sky with its endto-end strip of LEDs. A three-stage light package enhanced the overall appearance even further and made it easy for Carla and Marie to find their way back to the hotel. The headlights of the Porsche Cayenne S use LEDs as standard. Luckily for the ladies, the SUV had the Porsche Dynamic Light System which provided cornering lights and a motorway light. A matrix beam was also fitted in the headlights for added visibility and an enhanced vehicle appearance. As the ladies left for their hotel, they took the long way around just so they could hear that engine roar one more time and hit the rails on those curves that bended the road. They really took advantage of the Porsche Traction Management system to equally move driver power to the axles. It provided just the right of hang time on the curves and made the ride fun and elating. When they arrived at their hotel, Carla and Marie bid their farewell to the Porsche Cayenne S. Their lives were changed for the better because of the first class ride they had in the vehicle. Saying goodbye was difficult for both, but they knew in the light of day they would never forget the time they spent with the Porsche Cayenne S and all that it offers drivers and passengers alike.

The Verdict If you couldn’t already tell, Carla and Marie, as well as all our team members, were enamored by the Porsche Cayenne S. It’s certainly not your grandma’s SUV as it comes with plenty of power, performance, and punch making it the ideal vehicle for everyday use. We loved everything about the Porsche Cayenne S! From top-to-bottom, it has the appearance of a sports vehicle with an interior that sings. We loved the enhanced control options and loved that way that it caters to the driver. There isn’t anything that this Porsche Cayenne S can’t do it seems. We are glad that Marie and Carla had the opportunity to drive the Porsche Cayenne S on rough terrain as well as on the smooth highway. This really gave them some good insight into how the different performance modes of the SUV operated and allowed them to feel the luxury this vehicle provided even when traversing bumps and jumps.

There’s plenty of cargo room in the Porsche Cayenne S, which just adds to the attractiveness of the vehicle. This certainly made shopping for Carla and Marie more manageable, and we can only imagine what it could do for a day out on the beach.. It’s a comfortable and luxurious while also being that vehicle that you turn to for all your traveling needs. We do have to say this was one vehicle that we were sorry to see go. But, we were sure happy that we got to spend as much time with it as we did though with the Porsche Cayenne S. Carla and Marie loved riding in style in addition to having the safe and performance-enhanced ride that they did. They sure caused a stir when they showed up at the movie premiere event and that turned at the entrance. Both Carla and Maria felt like the belle of the ball that night, and we can certainly see why!

Vietnam Hello from Vietnam! This month I visited Ho Chi Minh City, also known as Saigon. This city has a vibrant nightlife with countless bars, restaurants and cafes. Some of these establishments even offer live music, including karaoke which is very popular here. Ho Chi Minh’s Chinatown is very popular for its food and affordable shopping. Also, if you would like to sharpen your bargaining skills, this is the perfect place for you! You would be surprised how many pancake and other western specialty shops are all around the city. It’s a real pleasure trying all tastes - and don’t forget to sample the Vietnamese coffee!

Xa My Phong is one of many temples to attract lots of tourists but local people also come here to pray. All around are flowers and, of course, bonsai trees. The whole area is really peaceful and quiet and if you meet youths living in temple, they will kindly offer to show you around.
Mekong River is the heartbeat of the city. Fishermen can be seen fishing there and taking water for their rice fields. You can rent a small boat and go for a ride. It would be an amazing experience, if time permits, to visit the candy factory in the middle of the forest.
In the same forest you can see small fruit markets where they sell every possible kind of fruit. But if you see durian, stay away – this fruit has a really unpleasant smell! Having said that, the taste will make you forget your first impression.
In the middle of the forest, on my way to the candy factory, I discovered they were making candies out of fresh organic coconut. You can see the whole process in front of you and really enjoy it!
One of the local markets is known for selling pure art, including jewellery boxes made of pearl shells and egg shell. It takes hours to break shells into small pieces and then use them to ‘draw’ paintings.
Buddha, in Vietnam, is shown as smiling but also as reading, praying and eating. You can see his statue on every corner - a wonderful sight and excellent photo opportunity.

THE STARGAZING EXPERIENCE IN NORTHERN CHILE Where: Alto Atacama, Chile
San Pedro de Atacama is a tiny oasis located at an altitude of 2,500 metres, in a geographic area showcasing some of the tallest peaks in the Andes Mountains, as well as the famous Atacama Desert - known as the driest desert in the world. Considered to be the archaeological capital of Chile, Atacama is privileged by beautiful landscapes and eternally clear blue skies. Alto Atacama Desert Lodge & Spa is the result of the humble dream of a Chilean Family, inspired by the magnificence of this land that seemed from another world. Located in the lush Catarpe Valley of the Salt Mountain Range, just over a mile from the plaza of San Pedro, the Alto Atacama’s design was influenced by local village architecture and conceived to blend seamlessly into its environment and appear as a part of the terracotta-coloured ridge that rises behind it. The setting, the sweeping views, the tranquility and silence, and the hotel’s wonderful outdoor lounge spaces make the Alto Atacama a destination in itself, and unlike any other hotel property in the region. Chile’s desert is blessed with the clearest skies in the southern hemisphere and Alto Atacama’s unique location away from the bright lights of the village of San Pedro means there is zero light pollution, providing the most dramatic setting for an evening of stargazing. This experience is not designed to be a scientific one, rather a sensorial one, and an emotional link with the cosmos. http://www.altoatacama.com

VEGETARIAN
GONE WILD
PAELLA VEGETARIANA
P
aella - a Spanish rice dish - is traditionally made with seafood, chicken or sausage with a seasoning base of saffron and tomato. However, this vegetarian version is just as good, if not better, than the original. Taking traditional dishes that include non-vegetarian ingredients and turning them into veggie approved dishes, gives those traditional flavours a new direction. Once you try this recipe, you will know the sensation I am talking about. The key to this dish is using as much colour as you can. They say you eat with your eyes first and what is more colourful than a bunch of fresh veggies!
INGREDIENTS 900ml vegetable stock l 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil l 1 large onion, finely chopped l 1 red pepper, deseeded and diced l 1 green pepper, deseeded and diced l 3 crushed garlic cloves l 1 cup chopped tomatoes l 1 ½ tsp paprika l 250g paella rice l 1 small fennel bulb l 1 cup roasted peppers, drained and rinsed l 110g fine green beans l Paella cooking pan (or wide frying pan)
PREPARATION: 1.Heat the extra-virgin olive oil in paella pan over a medium-high heat. Fry the chopped onion and diced peppers for 5 minutes.
2.Add the crushed garlic cloves, chopped tomatoes and paprika; fry
for 2 minutes. Stir in the paella rice. Shave the fennel bulb and add to the pan; season with salt and paper. 3.Pour over the stock and saffron, bring to the boil. Reduce to a simmer and leave the rice to cook uncovered, without stirring, for 10 minutes. 4.Take half of the roasted peppers, drain and rinse them, and scatter over. Top and slice fine green beans; add and cook for a further 10 minutes. 5.Turn off the heat, cover with foil and let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Serve with lemon slices for extra freshness.

Raphael Blechschmidt Riyadh is enjoying Swiss Fashion Days in the grounds of the Swiss Embassy Residence. Imagine camera flashes, Saudi guests and a unique atmosphere combining different cultures and styles of clothes design. Well, I have been lucky enough to witness a unique run way collection full of colour and shine by Swiss Designer, Raphael Blechschmidt, who visited from Switzerland to launch his collection for the first time in Saudi Arabia. One early, dusty morning in Riyadh, me and Raphael were sitting in the lobby of one of the central hotels, talking about his first experience in the Saudi fashion industry and slowly getting into his fashion career story which began more than 30 years ago. Could you tell us about your influences or inspirations for this season?
My inspiration for this season was Paris, the capital of haute couture, the city of the Chansons bistros and, of course, its landmark the Eiffel Tower which makes Paris also a city of architecture. In my current collection you can see several details which have been inspired by this extraordinary construction.
Do you feel that your Swiss origins have a strong influence upon your work? I am sure that my Swiss origins exert an influence on my work. Most people associate Switzerland with mountains, chocolate, watches and banking but there is a lot more. Despite the small size of our country, we have four different languages (German, French, Italian and RhaetoRomanic) plus many other factors that make Switzerland remarkably versatile and unique. I tend to think more on an international level than most people living in central Switzerland due to my place of work and residence in Basel near to Germany and France.
In your early sketches for each season’s design, do you try to bring a feeling of world cultures into your creations? I never plan to bring a certain Swissness into my creations. My inspiration comes from everything which surrounds me in my everyday life, my experiences and my feelings. Perhaps there will be a touch of Saudi Arabia in my next collection. Who knows?
Which countries have your designs been shown in recently? I am one of the last couturiers in Switzerland. That is why I only present my collections in Basel where I live and work.
Can we expect to see your designs available here in Riyadh and in the GCC countries? No. My dresses can only be bought in Basel. We set a great value on perfect measurement and accuracy and we work on two exclusive collections each year that you can see in my own fashion show in Basel. You are always welcome to come around and we will create your attire exactly how you fancy it!
Please tell us how your creative career began: In December this year I will celebrate my 30-year-jubilee! After my This is your first visit to Saudi Arabia. I always try to go my own way, to feel the time, to bring my own feelings into my collections and of course to have fun with what I do. I want fashion to be elegant and nice. In my eyes, fashion should never appaer tawdry. But there is one couturier that always fascinated me: Yves Saint Laurent. The way he used colours and clothed women elegantely is just outstanding. Apart from that, I am just a creative person who makes his own things and has developed his own style over the last decades. When one of my clients is admired because of her outfit, it‘s is the biggest compliment for me; especially when you can see it is Raphael Blechschmidt made.
What has been a major surprise in your life? My first diving experience. All these beautiful shapes and colours in

This Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer is without doubt a must have this season. 3.La Prairie Skin Caviar Concealer-Foundation is definitely the best foundation in the world. I was too young to see the benefits the first time I tried it some years back. But now I realize how good and beautiful the texture of the foundation is. Perfect for every skin type and so worth the high price as it comes with a thick concealer with exactly the right shade for the foundation on the lid of the bottle. A big plus also for the synthetic brush that comes with the best quality hair for creamy products. 4.Make Up For Ever, HD High Definition Powder is my go-to powder on sets. I use it to prime the eyelids before eyeshadows. It also gives you everlasting results during weddings and provides high definition results as it photographs really well. 5.Bioderma Sensibio H2O Makeup remover. I would never start a makeup routine without this product. It removes every trace of old makeup and dirt and will tone your skin in a gentle way. 6.EMBRYOLISSE Lait -Creme Concentrate. I like the pink one for cooler tones and the peachy one for warmer skin tones. 11.Laura Mercier foundation primer is simply the best one! 12.Christian Dior’s 5 Couleur Eyeshadow Palette in MONTAIGNE. A universal palette with the colours you need, it suits most skin tones and the pigment has a beautiful shimmer. 13.Rock ‘N’ Kohl Bedroom Black . WHAT IS PREVENTATIVE BOTOX? Botox is the most popular cosmetic treatment in the world, with millions of procedures performed each year. But it is probably one of those things you’ve always assumed you’ll think more about in 15 or 20 years. After all, Botox is largely used by an older demographic to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Botox has fundamentally been used for treating wrinkles that are already formed, but in recent years it has transitioned into being used as a tool for prophylactic, or prevention, of wrinkles. There is a consensus among the medical community that if started earlier, it can help slow the formation of permanent wrinkles.
62
MAY 2018
What is preventative Botox and how does it work? People develop wrinkles because, over time, skin weakens and can’t effectively bounce back from the folding caused by laughing, smiling, frowning and other motions your face makes on a regular basis. So, it is typically recommended treating wrinkles in two steps: Using a topical retinol product to stimulate collagen, which strengthens your skin, and then using neuromodulators like Botox to relax facial muscles and prevent them from constricting and wrinkling overlying skin together. Preventative Botox simply starts that process early on people who need it more. Preventative Botox is used to retrain facial muscles and improve facial posture that can cause wrinkles. By using very precise and discrete placement of a neuromodulator like Botox, we are targeting specific muscles that are pulling in a direction we don’t want. It allows for opposing muscles to pull in the opposite direction to become stronger over time, allowing for muscles to age more evenly. Botox specifically prevents dynamic wrinkles, or wrinkles caused by muscle movements. Those typically include lines around the sides of your mouth, horizontal lines across the forehead, crow's feet, and wrinkles on the side of your nose. By freezing these muscles with Botox, you can prevent their movement and ensuing wrinkles. The right age to start The best time to start treating wrinkles is when they first appear. Initially, wrinkles will start to show up when you're making facial expressions and will go away at rest. However, over time wrinkles will start to stick around, even when you’re not making a particular facial expression. When you start to develop the earliest sign of resting wrinkles, this is the best time to start treating them, before wrinkles start to stick - it is presumptive to assume that they will develop. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has approved Botox for adults between the ages of 18 and 65. Skin ages at a different rate and is affected by common factors differing for each patient’s skin type, race, level of sun exposure, genetics, lifestyle and facial mobility (frequency of use of facial expression). Because of these
determining factors it is recommended patients seek treatment when they begin to notice signs of line etching when their face is in a relaxed position, which can range from the late 20s to early 30s for most patients. Doctors can usually tell if and where you might need preventative Botox just by looking at your face. For example, someone who regularly purses her lips and furrows her brow out of habit might start to get lines around her mouth and forehead in her 20s. Botox can be injected in the right places to help ‘train’ a person’s face to no longer fall into that habit, lowering the odds that they’ll develop permanent wrinkles in those spots. Starting Botox in your 20s or 30s doesn’t mean you’re going to be hooked on injectables for the rest of your life. Ideally, patients come back less and less often over time. Some people may need a touch-up after four months, while others may not need to come back for a year or even longer. Is preventative Botox for everyone? Preventative Botox isn’t for everyone. Everyone needs to use sunscreen, but not everyone needs Botox. It’s just another tool in an individual's wrinkle-preventing arsenal, along with safe sun habits, moisturizer and anti-ageing products. If you’re doing everything right but find that you’re starting to have these resting wrinkles, you might want to look into the procedure. Benefits of preventative Botox Patients seeking preventative Botox treatments may reap more benefits than those using Botox as a corrective cosmetic procedure. Aside from being avidly used to smooth facial wrinkles in the forehead, between the eyebrows and around the eyes, the effects of cosmetic Botox can also improve facial symmetry; arching of the eyebrows, the resting position of a scowling mouth, and correcting a gummy smile. Also, by injecting Botox at the first sign of ageing, muscles are paralyzed from contraction thereby preventing deep set wrinkles to form. The proper amount of units of Botox administered by a doctor can soften facial wrinkles, while still allowing slight movement for more natural facial expressions.

REPLENISH THROUGH RAMADAN
T
he holy month of Ramadan is just around the corner and its a devoted time of the year where millions of Muslims around the world fast from sunrise to sunset. The daily fast is broken with Iftar - an indulgent food feast with family and friends, after a testing day of perseverance and patience. Without eating or drinking during the day for a whole month, fasting can be a challenge especially when it comes to keeping hydrated and energized in the desert sun. The easiest option may be to stay indoors, however with the air conditioning on all day, this too can have a very drying effect. Could IV Vitamin Drips be the answer to staying replenished during Ramadan? Intravenous (IV) Vitamin Drips deliver vitamins, minerals, and amino acids directly to the body for maximum absorption. This allows the nutrients to flood your body and nourish itself at the cellular level and by using this method larger doses, compared to smaller does of vitamin supplements, can be safely injected. Some of the incredible benefits include: •Increased energy •Support for weight loss •Improvement of mood & decrease of anxiety attacks •Chronic pain & headache relief •Support for digestive issues like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) •Strengthened immune system •Healthier sleep patterns •Lessens the symptoms associated with Allergies, Diabetes, Asthma, and Cancer Dr. Lanalle Dunn, Founder of The Chiron Clinic & Director of Health and Wellness at Dubai Sustainable City, advises having IV Drips weekly after Iftar to keep your mind and body supported during Ramadan. 64

RIYADH ARAB FASHION WEEK
F
or the first time in the history of the country, we had the chance to see and be part of this remarkable international, world renowned fashion event. After New York Fashion Week, fashionistas and international models landed in the desert Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in Riyadh. The Ritz-Carlton Hotel welcomed and hosted the guests including big international design teams from countries such as Russia, Italy, Brazil, Lebanon, Egypt and USA. Top Saudi designers such a SWAF were also presenting their collections on the runway. International sponsors of the event included names such as Richard Mille, Makeup Forever, Huaway, BMW and well known Saudi Jewellery company, Lazurde, from which I had the pleasure of wearing a high quality 21 carat golden necklace for the event. The Riyadh Arab Fashion Week was organized by the Arab Fashion Council with the patronage of HRH Princess Noura Bint Faisal Al Saud. The Kingdom is experiencing huge social changes and one of these is Arab Fashion Week. Many Saudi women have been waiting for such changes for a long time and, thankfully, we all feel that the country is heading towards the 2030 Vision. The Guest of Honour at the event was Jean Paul Gaultier, who opened the runway show for the first day at the Show Tent. Fashion celebrities and influencers filled the massive 66

venue. Over the five days, we saw many fashionable looks including local styles for Saudi ladies. One picture of me wearing a black velvet abaya provided by @sketch.saudi, a multi-brand boutique, and a handmade bag by talented Saudi designer @firenze.sa, has been posted on the New York Times, where you can see me standing infront of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Riyadh. My runway highlight was that of two designers from UAE, Arwa Al Banawi @arwaalbanawi and Rana Yousry from the Egyptian high-end fashion house @asoryofficial, where the elegance of creation meets with the dramatic style of iconic gowns. By special invitation, an extra event was held at the Riyadh’s city centre Harvey Nichols store, a fabulous extension of the original central London, Knightsbridge store, championing a multitude of the best small and large designers. The Trunk Show at this event gave those lucky enough to be present a really exciting close-up feeling of fashion from the House Of MuaMua, Maison Alexandrine, BibiSara, Yanina Couture and many more. This special event was also attended by HRH Princess Noura Bint Al Saud. Following the success of this wonderful fashion event, we are now hugely looking forward to the second edition of Riyadh Arab Fashion Week in October 2018 with a much bigger variety of local and international designers..

Fasting for
NON-MUSLIMS
Dr. Lanalle Dunn Founder of The Chiron Clinic
D
id you know about the surprising benefits of fasting this Ramadan? Ramadan is a month in which Muslims all over the world undergo a daily fast - one in which food, drink, and smoking are all forbidden between sunrise and sunset. However, many non-Muslims are learning of the physical benefits to be attained through the struggles of hunger. Founder of the Chiron Clinic, Dr. Lanalle Dunn said that many of her non-Muslim clients were undertaking the popular 5:2 diet around the time of Ramadan. “The premise of the diet is five days of the week you eat as you normally would, no restrictions on food, drink, anything. But then on two days of your choice in the week, you consume just 500-600 calories in 24 hours,” she said. Dr. Lanalle gives her top tips on how to benefit from the 5:2 diet:
FILL UP ON PROTEIN AND VEGETABLES
Make sure that you are eating high-quality meat and vegetables on your fasting days. This will help you stay fuller for longer and you can eat a lot of filling vegetables for very few calories. I advise my clients to stick to oily fish, prawns, chicken, turkey, pork, beef, and eggs. 68
MAY 2018
EATING MEDITERRANEAN
Stick to a low-carbohydrate Mediterranean-style diet, both on the days when you are fasting and when you are not. That means more olive oil and nuts, as well as plenty of eggs, yogurt, oily fish, and vegetables. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER
It is important that you drink plenty of fluids (although not allowed during Ramadan for fasting Muslims), the 5:2 diet allows for drinking water. Stick to two liters or eight cups a day, also remember that tea and coffee count (minus the milk and sugar). EMPTY ALL OF THE JUNK FOOD OUT OF THE HOUSE
Make sure you get rid of any temptation, it means you are far less likely to cheat on fast days and you are less likely to indulge in other days. Instead, make sure you have healthy snacks that are already prepared that you can snack on if you are hungry. Celery and carrot sticks with hummus are one of my personal favorites. REGULAR EXERCISE
It’s important that you are still exercising while undertaking the diet if you want to keep the weight off. I would recommend doing muscle building exercises such as press-ups and squats, as well as aerobic exercises such as walking and cycling.

“There is a big difference between having a passion for something and making a business out of it”
When it comes to art and design, Dania Dahleh is driven emotionally throughout the process. She’s also living proof of her own motto, ‘If you believe, you can achieve.’ Read on to learn what sparked her interest in fashion, what trends to look out for in 2018 and, most importantly, where to find her creations!

Please introduce yourself to our readers: I am Dania Dahleh, a Jordanian fashion designer. I was born on 15th March 1987 in Saudi Arabia. I’m a mother of three little boys and the owner/co-founder of Dania Dahleh Fashion House in Amman, Jordan. I’m an artist by education, and a fashion designer by passion and experience.
Tell us about your education: I planned my journey in fashion and arts from a young age, starting with private lessons in art and drawings at the age of 15. I graduated from the University of Jordan in 2008, a BA of Fine Arts. I believed I needed to strengthen my abilities in drawing and extend my knowledge about the anatomy of human figures and colour theory, so I could start my career in art and design on a solid foundation. I continued my studies in fashion in London (Central Saint Martins) where I earned the necessary fundamentals and skills needed for my career in fashion. In early 2010, I joined one of the best finishing schools in Switzerland (Institut Villa Pierrefeu) for additional studies in languages, etiquette and protocol to help in the business world in dealing with multicultural societies.
What sparked your interest in fashion? As a young girl, I was always interested in arts, fashion and dressing up. However, the turning point was actually when I designed my wedding dress at the atelier of the Lebanese Designer, Abed Mahfouz (every girl knows how important that dress is). At that point I believed I had a special talent.
What made you take fashion more seriously and make a career out of it? The feedback and positive reactions I received from my family, friends and supporters at that time, plus my love and passion for this field, made me believe and be certain that this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
When did you decide to start your own label? After getting my education and practical experience, I thought the time was right to be one of the first to start my own label as a couturier in Amman, Jordan.
Haute couture vs. ready-to-wear - which captures your heart the most? If I am speaking from the heart, Haute couture captures my heart the most for the simple reason that it includes a lot of details and there's a big space to show my creativity in embroidery art.
How has your work evolved since you began your own label? I started my career from a very young age when I was around 22 years old. Definitely, the experiences and exposure I get every year, reflects on my work. I was able to create my own blue print and identity; hence the change in fashion trends over the last 10 years.
How was the start? What challenges did you have to face and how did you overcome them? Each stage of my journey had its own challenges, whether it was business related obstacles (such as financial matters, finding the right team members and suppliers) or the personal challenges. The challenges continue, but because of the team I created at work and my personal support system, I am always able to reinforce my ability to overcome the obstacles and believe in myself more and more.
What do you love most about the fashion design business? Fashion design is what makes me alive; it’s what creates my identity and confidence; it's a language I use to express myself to the world. 72
MAY 2018
How is your work received internationally? So far I am so happy with my accomplishments, regionally, nationally and internationally. But I truly believe that the best yet to come.
Describe your designs in three words. Edgy, sophisticated and dreamy.
What usually inspires you when working on a new collection? I really can't give you one answer because my inspiration can come from so many things. However, what I can assure you is that I need to be driven emotionally throughout my designing process. I always depend on the ideas and messages that I want to share throughout my designs.
This may be an impossible question to answer but do you have a favourite collection? Yes, this is so difficult to answer! Each collection is so dear to my heart. It's like asking a mother to choose her favourite child.
What are your favourite fashion trends for 2018? A. Street style evolution. B. The mixture of patterns and colour embroidery into ready-to-wear pieces. C. Over-sized jackets and outfits. D. Men's style suits into women's wear. E. The blend of simplicity with edginess all in harmony.
Where can we find your designs? Our base location is in Jordan where our boutique is located but thanks to social media, we are one click away: Instagram page : @daniadahleh website: www.daniadahleh.com
What is the biggest lesson that you have learned since you started your company? There is a big difference between having a passion for something and making a business out of it.
What’s your motto? If you believe, you can achieve!
What’s your future vision for the DANIA DAHLEH label? Dania Dahleh’s brand vision is to be one of the known fashion brands around the globe. Another big dream is to have our own showroom in Paris.
What advice would you give to young designers? For all young designers or startups: believe in yourself, do your homework and never give up!
Your message for us at CP magazine: Thank you CP magazine for giving me this beautiful opportunity to be featured in this issue. Best of luck to everyone working behind the scenes to make this magazine one of the leading magazines in the region. www.cpmagazine.net

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR SOME TENDER, LOVING, COUTURE?!
W
ho doesn’t hunger for some TLC once in a while? We all do, at certain periods in our lives - if not always! And just when we need it, there it comes to the rescue; at a time when we are down in the dumps in our fashion game, lost and alone as if in a vacuum, pitch black with no thoughts of what we want, need or fancy. Have you ever been there? I know I have. But this is not the point or a way to make you feel bad, it can happen to anyone. And I mean anyone. We all try to keep up with appearances when it comes to fashion choices. While looking for appraisals, we seem to lose sight or miss the whole point entirely and fail to see what is great for this look and what will enhance it; turning a blind eye on that one bad decision that will completely demolish our look to the point of fashion blunder of no return. It’s not really our fault; the chances are that we never sat down in a one-to-one conversation with ourselves to really understand what is ‘stylein’ or, more importantly, ‘style-out’ when it comes to our own TLC. We need to understand what is flattering and what is damaging in our closets. You definitely must hear terms like trends, styles, fashions, showcase, craze, vogue, rage, mode, mania, must-have, so out, passing fancy, fad, look, classic, latest, so over. The list goes on and on and on. My point is not to bore you, just to inform you that all of those terms we hear lingering around when we shop at any couture house should just be echoes. What we ought to hear is, flattering my figure, praise my style, or acclaim my trend. Because, at the end of the day, us designers want to sell our creations and some would sell anything to anyone. But and this is a huge BUT – a good, smart, talented, real fashion designer and couturier knows exactly which of his/her latest collections and illustrations will slip on perfectly, complementing the figure of each and every client that walks in to their atelier. There is a goodie bag of ideas and trends suggested to each and 76
MAY 2018
every paying customer and it is so wrong to sell the right idea to the wrong kind of figure and vice versa. Get to know your curves; learn about them and what they need more or less of; learn what will enhance and boost them; and know what will break them if you chose wrongly. It is not so difficult - God bless Google for making such information so accessible and comprehensible to us all. Because of my generous nature and my endless love to my calling profession, I will show you a trick that I entrust to all my darling clients when it comes to knowing your silhouette and what is suitable, what it is a much better fit and what is not. It goes like this: PUT LESS ON MORE AND MORE ON LESS WITH MODERATION. This short sentence will definitely shine a beam of couture insight light when you are sometimes in the dark, wondering what to decide or what will work best for you. For example, if your body frame or shape is an athletic physique - skinny and slender with no real definitions or curves on the waist or bust area - then viola, just put more on your less area, with moderation. But remember, moderation is key. Shopping for TLC, or TENDER LOVING COUTURE as I love calling it, is and must be an adventure. Like Alice going down the rabbit hole to a sparkly couture heaven, every visitor there must feel, live, encounter and experience the glitz and glam of it all. So next time you are in the mood for an adventure, choose the right safari guide. In other words, a good designer with a conscience that will accompany you on that ride that will live and last forever in your mind, thoughts and wedding album. And remember, when you want to picture couture, picture it this way and this way alone. Couture is magic, designers are illusionists, and you lovely darling clients are our show stopping, breath taking act! Until next time, my darlings. Find your
TLC. Stay safe and fashionable.

AVENGERS INFINITY WAR WRITING MOVIE
WRONGS moviewrongs.com by: JIM WEST
A
Directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo - Written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely
decade of build-up in what has been a feat of movie magic to layer and bring these various characters to the screen and now we are wrapping up a culmination of the decade of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (referred lovingly as the MCU). This film clocks in under three hours and it is most likely another hour plus of film edits that hopefully will get to be seen in extended cuts. This film is meant to be a two part film event that will conclude certain fates of long beloved characters. Coincidentally the contracts for most of these characters are done as well, and should’ve been taken into consideration in the movies climax. Now, compared to most Marvel films, this one will easily break box office records and be ranked high on the MCU list due simply to the things they are starting to get right in the MCU. Yet there are still missteps that can easily be corrected with better writing. Here come the spoilers. Following the events of Captain America: Civil War and Thor Ragnarok, the Avengers are still broken apart. We resume with a distress call from the ship that Thor and the Asgardians escaped in at the end of the last Thor film. We get our introduction to the new bad guy in Thanos. He has come to claim one of the infinity stones. Infinity stones are from the creation of the universe and contain singularities that each grant power and control over certain aspects of the universe. The stones are Space, Power, Reality, Time, Mind and Soul. Thanos quickly shows us he is stronger than Hulk, and his Black Order of henchmen are very formidable foes. They have spent years culling the universe planet by planet and now Thanos is on his fast track to gather the stones so he can make quick work of what he believes is the right thing to do to save the universe. This sets him apart from most villains in the MCU as it gives him conviction. The last villain they wrote this aspect into was Killmonger, from the massively successful film Black Panther. Conviction is a far better aspect to a villain than the run of the mill ‘crazy and wants to see the world burn’ villain. He believes in his purpose and cause and is willing to sacrifice everything to fulfill this purpose. Before he can kill the Hulk, an Asgardian opens the bifrost and sends Hulk to Earth. There, he lands right in the Sanctum of Magic where Doctor Strange gets told Thanos is coming. Things start to move rapidly with Tony Stark being brought in quickly and before we can say infinity stones; Thanos’s henchmen have already made it to Earth. The rest of the film shows the Avengers trying to protect the two stones they have. The Time Stone is with Dr Strange and the Mind Stone is embedded into the forehead of Vision. Now there are many 80
MAY 2018
locations to cover and parts of the Avengers team to keep track of, so writing several perspectives and locations must have been a tall order for the two writers. We have to track Tony Stark’s group or Spiderman, Doctor Strange, and eventually half the Guardians of the Galaxy, then there is Thor’s group of Rocket and Groot, and finally the rest of the Avengers with Captain America and crew holding up in Wakanda with Black Panther and his army. Since this is ‘war’ there are casualties and although death is expected for a film like this, here is where I felt they made mistakes. In foreshadowing scenes Doctor Strange sees over 14 million possible outcomes in their fight against Thanos and of course there is only one outcome where they win. Then several minutes in the film later, he willingly gives up the Time Stone to spare Tony Stark’s life when he told Tony in the beginning of the film he would not give up the stone for anyone - much less Tony. So, Tony MUST be key to the ‘endgame’ comment from Doctor Strange. This completely throws off any real risk. Then when Thanos snaps his fingers and half the universe ‘dies’ and disappears to ash; the characters we all know have future films in the works disappear. Black Panther has a billion dollar film success. He is getting a sequel. Why not instead let his guard and sister disappear in front of his eyes and give him an emotional moment. Winter Soldier’s gun stays behind, but not his arm? That actor is signed for several more films in the MCU so we know he will be back. Half of the Guardians of the Galaxy went away and Spiderman too. So it sort of undermines the impact of the culling. I think the writers should’ve taken the real life contracts into consideration in the selection of who disappeared so that it would help fuel the debate over will they come back or won’t they? Even with most of us already assuming these characters will somehow come back. Then, send off Captain America instead of Bucky. Have this scene end with him telling the rest to never give up and keep up the fight. That would have been a better emotional send off. Then, there is the digital turning to ash. Why not have the clothes stay behind as reminders they were just there? This visual would have been more harrowing to see. I think the writers and filmmakers made a terrible visual choice here to capitalize on what could have been a tremendous emotional moment in any MCU film. Missed opportunity there. Yet there is much to appreciate in this film. It seems Marvel is taking establishment of villains seriously and this bodes well for the future of the MCU. I hope they continue this trend. We have a year till the second half of this story concludes as well as the conclusion of the primary cast’s contracts. Give these characters we have watched for a decade the proper emotional send off they each deserve.
Thanks for reading Writing Movie ‘WRONGS’.

Memoirs About Unforgettable Moms The bond between a mother and child can be the most emotional and complicated of any relationship, so it's no wonder that moms have inspired some of the most heartfelt and heartrending writing in all of literature. In honor of Mother's Day, we rounded up few memoirs about some exceptional and unforgettable women written by their daughters and sons.
FIERCE ATTACHMENTS: A MEMOIR
THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE
by Vivian Gornick
by Nancy Bachrach
In this deeply etched and haunting memoir, Vivian Gornick tells the story of her lifelong battle with her mother for independence. There have been numerous books about mother and daughter, but none has dealt with this closest of filial relations as directly or as ruthlessly. Gornick's groundbreaking book confronts what Edna O'Brien has called "the prinicpal crux of female despair": the unacknowledged Oedipal nature of the mother-daughter bond. Born and raised in the Bronx, the daughter of "urban peasants," Gornick grows up in a household dominated by her intelligent but uneducated mother's romantic depression over the early death of her husband. Next door lives Nettie, an attractive widow whose calculating sensuality appeals greatly to Vivian. These women with their opposing models of femininity continue, well into adulthood, to affect Gornick's struggle to find herself in love and in work.
Nancy Bachrach is living in Paris, selling deodorant to the French, when a freak accident kills her father aboard his cabin cruiser, the aptly dubbed Mr. Fix It, in her incongruously named hometown of Providence. Her mother, Lola, the self-proclaimed “center of the universe,” whose medical history reads like the chapter headings of a psychiatric manual, lies in a coma “on death’s waiting list.” Nancy rushes home and sits by her mother’s ventilator—thinking about Sunny von Bülow and eyeing the plug. Thus begins a family reunion with her brother, Ben (a piano prodigy and eventual surgeon who was born with three thumbs), and sister, Helen (the wild child, now an “abnormal psychologist”). This is a dark, hilarious tale of genius, madness, ineptitude, collateral damage, and hope—with an ending that’s improbable, as only the truth can be. Aching and tender, unflinching and wry, The Center of the Universe is a multi generational mother-daughter story—a splendid, funny, lyrical book about family, truth, memory, and the resilience of love.
COCKTAIL HOUR UNDER THE TREE OF FORGETFULNESS
by Alison Bechdel
WHY BE HAPPY WHEN YOU COULD BE NORMAL? by Jeanette Winterson
Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? is a memoir about a life's work to find happiness. It's a book full of stories: about a girl locked out of her home, sitting on the doorstep all night; about a religious zealot disguised as a mother who has two sets of false teeth and a revolver in the dresser, waiting for Armageddon; about growing up in an north England industrial town now changed beyond recognition; about the Universe as Cosmic Dustbin. It is the story of how a painful past that Jeanette thought she'd written over and repainted rose to haunt her, sending her on a journey into madness and out again, in search of her biological mother. Witty, acute, fierce, and celebratory, Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? is a toughminded search for belonging, for love, identity, home, and a mother. 82
MAY 2018
by Alexandra Fuller
In Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness, Alexandra Fuller braids a multilayered narrative around the perfectly lit, Happy Valley-era Africa of her mother's childhood; the boiled cabbage grimness of her father's English childhood; and the darker, civil war-torn Africa of her own childhood. At its heart, this is the story of Fuller's mother, Nicola. Born on the Scottish Isle of Skye and raised in Kenya, Nicola holds dear the kinds of values most likely to get you hurt or killed in Africa: loyalty to blood, passion for land, and a holy belief in the restorative power of all animals. Fuller interviewed her mother at length and has captured her inimitable voice with remarkable precision. Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness is as funny, terrifying, exotic, and unselfconscious as Nicola herself.
ARE YOU MY MOTHER? A graphic memoir of Alison Bechdel becoming the artist her mother wanted to be. Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home was a pop culture and literary phenomenon. Now, a second thrilling tale of filial sleuthery, this time about her mother: voracious reader, music lover, passionate amateur actor. Also a woman, unhappily married to a closeted gay man, whose artistic aspirations simmered under the surface of Bechdel's childhood . . . and who stopped touching or kissing her daughter good night, forever, when she was seven. Poignantly, hilariously, Bechdel embarks on a quest for answers concerning the mother-daughter gulf. It's a richly layered search that leads readers from the fascinating life and work of the iconic twentieth-century psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott, to one explosively illuminating Dr. Seuss illustration, to Bechdel’s own (serially monogamous) adult love life. And, finally, back to Mother—to a truce, fragile and real-time, that will move and astonish all adult children of gifted mothers.
LIES MY MOTHER NEVER TOLD ME: A MEMOIR
THE GOOD DAUGHTER: A MEMOIR OF MY MOTHER'S HIDDEN LIFE
by Kaylie Jones
by Jasmin Darznik
In her riveting memoir Lies My Mother Never Told Me, Kaylie Jones—the daughter of author James Jones (From Here to Eternity) and an acclaimed author in her own right (A Soldier’s Daughter Never Cries; Celeste Ascending; As Soon As It Rains)—tells the poignant story of her relationship with her famous father and her alcoholic mother, and of her own struggles with the disease. A true story of privilege, loss, self-discovery, and redemption, Lies My Mother Never Told Me is Jones’s unforgettable account of a not-quite-fairy-tale childhood and adulthood defined by two constants: literature and alcohol.
Jasmin Darznik came to America from Iran when she was only three years old, and she grew up knowing very little about her family's history. When she was in her early twenties, on a day shortly following her father's death, Jasmin was helping her mother move; a photograph fell from a stack of old letters. The girl pictured was her mother. She was wearing a wedding veil, and at her side stood a man whom Jasmin had never seen before. At first, Jasmin's mother, Lili, refused to speak about the photograph, and Jasmin returned to her own home frustrated and confused. But a few months later, she received from her mother the first of ten cassette tapes that would bring to light the wrenching hidden story of her family's true origins in Iran
WHITE WALLS: A MEMOIR ABOUT MOTHERHOOD, DAUGHTERHOOD, AND THE MESS IN BETWEEN
MOM & ME & MOM
by Judy Batalion
Judy Batalion grew up in a house filled with endless piles of junk and layers of crumbs and dust; suffocated by tuna fish cans, old papers and magazines, swivel chairs, tea bags, clocks, cameras, printers, VHS tapes, ballpoint pens…obsessively gathered and stored by her hoarder mother. The first chance she had, she escaped the clutter to create a new identity—one made of order, regimen, and clean white walls. Until, one day, she found herself enmeshed in life’s biggest chaos: motherhood. Confronted with the daunting task of raising a daughter after her own dysfunctional childhood, Judy reflected on not only her own upbringing but the lives of her mother and grandmother, Jewish Polish immigrants who had escaped the Holocaust. What she discovered astonished her. The women in her family, despite their differences, were even more closely connected than she ever knew— from her grandmother Zelda to her daughter of the same name. And, despite the hardships of her own motherdaughter relationship, it was that bond that was slowly healing her old wounds.
by Maya Angelou
For the first time, Angelou reveals the triumphs and struggles of being the daughter of Vivian Baxter, an indomitable spirit whose petite size belied her largerthan-life presence—a presence absent during much of Angelou’s early life. When her marriage began to crumble, Vivian famously sent three-year-old Maya and her older brother away from their California home to live with their grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas. The subsequent feelings of abandonment stayed with Angelou for years, but their reunion, a decade later, began a story that has never before been told. In Mom & Me & Mom, Angelou dramatizes her years reconciling with the mother she preferred to simply call “Lady,” revealing the profound moments that shifted the balance of love and respect between them. Delving into one of her life’s most rich, rewarding, and fraught relationships, Mom & Me & Mom explores the healing and love that evolved between the two women over the course of their lives, the love that fostered Maya Angelou’s rise from immeasurable depths to reach impossible heights.
THE LONG GOODBYE by Meghan O'Rourke
What does it mean to mourn today, in a culture that has largely set aside rituals that acknowledge grief? After her mother died of cancer at the age of fifty-five, Meghan O'Rourke found that nothing had prepared her for the intensity of her sorrow. In the first anguished days, she began to create a record of her interior life as a mourner, trying to capture the paradox of grief-its monumental agony and microscopic intimacies-an endeavor that ultimately bloomed into a profound look at how caring for her mother during her illness changed and strengthened their bond. O'Rourke's story is one of a life gone off the rails, of how watching her mother's illness-and separating from her husband-left her fundamentally altered. But it is also one of resilience, as she observes her family persevere even in the face of immeasurable loss.
BETTYVILLE by George Hodgman
When George Hodgman leaves Manhattan for his hometown of Paris, Missouri, he finds himself—an unlikely caretaker and near-lethal cook—in a head-on collision with his aging mother, Betty, a woman of wit and will. Will George lure her into assisted living? When hell freezes over. He can’t bring himself to force her from the home both treasure—the place where his father’s voice lingers, the scene of shared jokes, skirmishes, and, behind the dusty antiques, a rarely acknowledged conflict: Betty, who speaks her mind but cannot quite reveal her heart, has never really accepted the fact that her son is gay. As these two unforgettable characters try to bring their different worlds together, Hodgman reveals the challenges of Betty’s life and his own struggle for selfrespect, moving readers from their small town—crumbling but still colorful—to the star-studded corridors of Vanity Fair. Evocative of The End of Your Life Book Club and The Tender Bar, Hodgman’s New York Times bestselling debut is both an indelible portrait of a family and an exquisitely told tale of a prodigal son’s return. www.cpmagazine.net

The Rado True Thinline Nature Collection
PRESS Burgan Bank Group Announces First Quarter 2018 Earnings
The Rado True Thinline Nature Collection is a beautiful fusion of nature and innovation taking the essence of Rado, and blending elements of the natural world into its design. The fruits of a creative partnership with Grandi Giardini Italiani - an organisation that promotes the rich heritage of grand Italian gardens - these additions to the True Thinline Collection celebrate the intersection between design and nature. In our increasingly urbanised lives, great pleasure can be taken from experiencing the vibrant colours of nature. The Rado designers took the very best elements of the natural world and worked to incorporate this aesthetic into these new True Thinline models. Whether it be the rich taupe brown of Earth, the deep midnight blue of Water, or the verdant green of Leaf, each colour rejuvenates the eye like a walk through a beautiful garden leaving it refreshed and inspired. Colours of nature created in high-tech ceramic Although the palette is simple and comes from nature, recreating these colours consistently in high-tech ceramic is incredibly difficult and, currently, only Rado has the expertise. To complement the lustrous cases and bracelets, each piece in the collection involves a unique dial treatment that echoes the natural world. Water gains a painted Motherof-Pearl dial that evokes the ebb and flow of the open sea, Earth boasts a metallised coating, which reflects and refracts light beautifully, and Leaf sports green Mother-ofPearl with a leaf structure applied to its underside which shimmers brilliantly in the light. The True Thinline is, in many ways, the ultimate Rado with its full high-tech ceramic construction, pioneering monobloc case and its lightness and thinness working in perfect harmony with its durable and scratch-resistant properties. Now, with the influence of nature, each piece subtly evokes beautiful aspects of the natural world, transforming these timepieces into something truly special, a calming and regenerative visual treat for the wrists of nature lovers.
Centrepoint’s 2018 Ramadan Exclusive Selection Delivers Elegance for Fashion

For a more refined, yet festive look, the collection also introduces ruffles and lace to tops and dresses, in addition to classy flowy trousers and overalls. To complete your look, Shoemart has a range of footwear and purses to complement any outfit, from highly wearable brown and nude pink shades through to more psychotropic and glittery shades that will work all summer.

The Freak Collection FREAKS OUT!
Fasten your seatbelts: the Freak is no longer a single timepiece. It’s an entire collection ! After the FREAK VISION launch at SIHH 2018 and the new FREAK VISION CORAL BAY, four new FREAK OUT timepieces, each armed with the in-house manual-wind caliber UN-205, are now joining the most maverick collection in Haute Horlogerie. All the game-changing Freak Out oddities are in place: no crown, dial or hands, a “flying carousel” tourbillon (the baguette movement rotates on its own axis) and super-light silicium technology. Freak architecture replaces traditional anchor and anchor wheel with two silicium impulse wheels in the center. Both wheels have 18 engaging teeth, each activating an alternator that transmits its energy to the balance staff — first in one direction, then the other. Requiring no lubrication, the structure ensures that force is always released in the direction of the balance rotation, thereby minimizing friction. The silicium hairspring beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hertz) and is only very slightly disturbed. The amount of disturbance is reduced to a minimum thanks to the low lift angle.

Tissot Chrono XL NBA Team Collection Sporty Gets Smart
The Tissot Chrono XL NBA Team collection, like the players, makes a bold fashion statement, thanks to the large 45mm cases of the watches. This obviously makes for a flawless readability. The collection dedicated to the six NBA teams is full of appealing design quirks, including clear indices and a black dial, which leave the logo and team colours free to be admired. A useful chronograph function adds to the sporty appeal. No detail is left neglected with the Tissot Chrono XL. Slick black PVD coating on the case, coloured stitching on the leather strap and sandblasted finishing, which gives a matte finish, ensures the result is ultra-modern. No sports fan will be able to resist this stylish homage to their favourite team.
Writing an entire century of watchmaking history while demostrating more dynamism than ever. This is the world of Mido, which can be discovered by those who take the time to explore the path that the Swatch Group brand has built over the past ten decades. Mido, which was founded in 1918 in Solothurn (Switzerland), is celebrating its centenary in 2018 with a pleasing display of vitality. And to put it mildly, 100 years after its creation, the Swiss Made brand – whose name means I measure in Spanish (yo mido) – remains true to the four cornerstones on which it has built its international reputation: appealing and timeless designs, a great ability to innovate, accurate and reliable movements and, the jewel in the crown, value for money that is undeniably one of the best in the market. These intrinsic values are the foundation for Mido’s bright future at a time when fine watchmaking enthusiasts are becoming more and more discerning. A brand with 100 years of history naturally draws inspiration from its rich past and the present environment to design its collections. While an anniversary is traditionally the occasion to re-issue iconic models, this is not only the spirit of Mido. Quite the opposite – after ten decades of business, the Swiss brand is leaning on its past and its present to look to the future. It is in this context that in 2018 the Swatch Group brand is unveiling (amongst others) the Caliber 80 with a large calendar aperture, an exclusive Mido movement that powers the stunning brand-new timepiece: the Commander Big Date. This elegant automatic watch, which respects the original Commander Collection’s DNA, features a large date aperture at 6 o’clock, a big date to celebrate an iconic date – Mido’s 100th anniversary – a feature generally produced by only high-end watchmaking brands. To top it all off, as its name suggests, its highperformance movement gives it a power reserve of up to 80 hours (compared to 42 hours for a standard movement). www.cpmagazine.net

You can learn a lot now no matter how things turn out. So long as you follow your passion and aren't reckless about safety or money, you should be fine. It could be quite a thrill, too.
The sun-Jupiter opposition is on May 8, when Jupiter is at its brightest. Be at your wisest and most discriminating when choosing when and how to be generous. With the new moon on the fifteenth, find that little trick that lets you train the dog, bring the houseplants back into bloom, or eliminate some small physical annoyance. The effort will be minor, but the results will look like magic. Get in the mood to concentrate on yourself during the full moon on May 29. If you get bored or the outside world distracts you, a good friend or partner will bring you back. Be grateful.

Party on during the new moon on May 15. Be safe and sensible and still have a great time with the crowd. Time may be short, and you may not get to do everything, but you can try. Venus enters Cancer on the nineteenth. Be prepared for a burst of popularity. People will find you more attractive no matter how you feel. Around the May 29 full moon, spending time with others could turn out to be the best way to take care of yourself. Be self-reflective, but don't drop out of sight and isolate yourself. It's okay to not be hyperactive.
The sun-Pluto trine on May 11 energizes you and gives you opportunities to network and socialize in a loftier circle. Some people may be hesitant or tired, but not you. Be charming and smart about love with the new moon on the fifteenth. A special someone could think that you're the answer to all their prayers - or problems. You'll know who (and which) it is. The May 29 full moon is for fixing a money matter or revamping something that used to be a moneymaker. Feel lucky and be smart. You can improve your cash flow and be more in the black now.
Jupiter opposes the sun on May 8, and you may have a few more self-doubts. Just be honest and feel good about how things are going. Enjoy your favorite people and local pleasures during the new moon on the fifteenth. There may be a lot of exotic temptations now, but they will still be there later. The full moon on May 29 lets you focus on career moves or social interactions. It's a complicated time, but you have the instincts and intuition to navigate through it all. Don't over promote yourself, but don't back away from a promising suggestion or offer of advancement or responsibility.
