WHAT IS FORMERLYME?

FormerlyMe is an online movement to motivate and inspire people to become the best version of themselves by showing them my journey and experience in trying a new workout and lifestyle regime every 30 days. Every post, update, and video is ‘formerly me’ as I endeavor to become the best version of myself and become FormerlyMe. Each month CP Magazine will showcase a part of my journey to becoming the best version of myself. I hope that in turn this inspires and motivates you to start your own journey as well. For this month’s story we will focus on the “Carey Drilling Sessions” days of my journey.

I had a few male personal trainers in my first year of FormerlyMe, and when I decided to work on a slam dunk challenge I knew I needed to focus on mobility and flexibility. I reached out to Carey Drilling to get me started on developing my muscles for jumping. Carey Drilling is the founder and lead personal trainer with her company DrillFit Training. With schooling and certification through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and working alongside some of the best bodybuilders and athletes in the business, she has developed substantial knowledge in the wide scope of the fitness industry. She has experience in functional training, bodybuilding, weight loss, strength/conditioning, corrective exercise, and rehabilitation. We got started with working on the legs from quads to hamstrings. The leg presses and lunges she had me doing were at first hard to keep balance. I stuck with it and after a few days of working through the exercises I started to get stronger and maintain better balance. This only reinforced the lesson I keep coming back to of consistency. If you stick to something long enough and practice perfectly, it does get better and better.

I announced via YouTube the GoFundMe campaign for my Slam Dunk Challenge to raise money and awareness for Child Mind Institute. The Child Mind Institute is an independent nonprofit dedicated to transforming the lives of children and families struggling with mental health and learning disorders. Our teams work every day to deliver the highest standards of care, advance the science of the developing brain and empower parents, professionals and policymakers to support children when and where they need it most. January passed us by super fast and my time with Carey came to an end. Carey helped me get a great start on preparing myself to reach my goal of slam dunking a basketball again at 44 years old. Two more months of February and March to go!
