SAVE THE TURTLES! Gill Sherry
When I was a child, Mother’s Day was a big event. My sister and I would make a card for our mum, present her with a bunch of flowers and ensure she felt special. Father’s Day was also a ‘thing’ but it was minor in comparison. As a family, we always celebrated Pancake Day (of course) on Shrove Tuesday, my favourite being served with the traditional lemon and sugar topping. Saint Valentine’s Day didn’t appear on my radar until I reached my teenage years and I suddenly became desperate to receive an anonymous card through the door!
As I grew older, I became aware of other ‘days’ being acknowledged, some more worthwhile than others. National Siblings Day and Teacher’s Day, for example, seemed to make sense. National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, less so.
The sceptical side of me put the sudden invention of these celebratory days down to commercial exploitation, large monetary enterprises encouraging the public to spend their hard-earned income on gift cards, cookies, or whatever else they wanted to sell for a quick, often significant, profit. I mean, who else could possibly benefit from National Sticky Toffee Pudding Day?
As a result, I refused to be taken in by National Fish and Chip Day, International Waffle Day or Ice Cream for Breakfast Day (seriously?). Other days of celebration, however, have begun to catch my attention. I could easily be persuaded to part with my cash on International Polar Bear Day and Bat Appreciation Day if it meant I was helping these particular mammals.

MAY 2022
In fact, there is one particular day in May that has really piqued my interest. World Turtle Day takes place on 23rd May each year. It aims to bring attention to, and increase knowledge of and respect for, turtles and tortoises, and encourage human action to help them survive and thrive. I was lucky enough to visit Sri Lanka in 2016 and witness first-hand the efforts certain conservationists go to in order to protect these vulnerable creatures. Sea turtle eggs are collected from beaches where they are at risk from poachers and predators (land, sea and air). Once hatched, the tiny reptiles are nurtured before being released into the ocean. Without this essential intervention, many would perish. Of course, World Turtle Day isn’t just about sea turtles. All species of turtle and tortoise are included in this yearly observance. As well as encouraging us to celebrate and protect these shellcovered beauties, it aims to increase awareness of their disappearing habitats around the world.
The advice given to those wishing to embrace World Turtle Day includes never buying a turtle or tortoise from a pet shop or market. This simply increases demand from the wild and lines the pockets of poachers. Similarly, they should never be removed from the wild unless they are sick or injured. It is essential that illegal sales of turtles or tortoises is reported and stopped, along with cruelty to these fragile creatures. World Turtle Day is a non-profit organisation spreading awareness on illegal pet trade, live food markets and habitat destruction. You can follow them on Instagram @worldturtleday or make a donation via their website www.worldturtleday.org/make-a-donation. That has to be better than eating ice-cream for breakfast!

This tiny house retreat helped me unplug and reconnect with what matters most Getaway's tiny cabins are located outside of major metropolitan areas and offer a minimalist escape from city life-with a strict no-WiFi policy Latifah Al-Hazza
If you’ve ever scrolled through Instagram and come across a photo of someone doing a complicated acroyoga pose in front of a huge glass window in a tiny wooden box in the woods, chances are it was taken at Getaway. The modern cabin rental company, founded in 2015 and featured in season eight of Shark Tank in 2017, now has more than a dozen locations around the country. Getaway’s founder, Jon Staff, grew up in rural Minnesota and most of his childhood was spent outdoors. After working at a tech startup, he found himself burned-out and longing for nature. He quit his job and hit the road in a 26-foot Airstream trailer to take time to reflect. During this trip, Staff had an epiphany, realizing that being in nature was essential to his well-being, productivity, and happiness. Today, Getaway invites guests to cherish their free time, find balance through disconnection, and reconnect with those who matter most. Guests drive about 2 hours from a metropolitan city (including New York, Nashville, and Los Angeles), place their phone in a dedicated inroom box, and spend a few days enjoying the solitude of nature.

Intentional minimalism
As soon as I arrive at Getaway’s North Carolina location, I realize I won’t be as alone as I had anticipated. I drive past a family sitting in Adirondack chairs around a campfire as I search for my designated wooden box. Around the corner, a couple is making lunch at their picnic table while their dog is attached to an incredibly long leash.
The cabins are spread throughout 31 acres of land, but I can still hear the faint chatter of my neighbors. Each guest has their own personal plot of land equipped with the same items: a picnic bench, a few chairs, a dog leash, a fire pit, a cooking grate, and beautiful views.
I try to pull up an email that lists my cabin number and discover that I have lost cellular service somewhere between the entrance and the drive through the outpost. It’s ok—Getaway preps guests with what to expect, guidelines, and additional details before arrival, and I come prepared with screenshots (the campground map is especially helpful).
My accommodations are definitely tiny, but the ceiling inconspicuously heightens toward the window, so it feels more spacious than it is. Although there is electricity, the gigantic window and light pine interior keep the space bright. Good lighting is important for those Instagram shots, but you’ll have to wait to post your photos—Getaway stays true to its minimalist word, with a strict no-WiFi or TV policy (the cabins do have air conditioning, heat, electricity, and running water, but cell service is spotty or nonexistent).
14
The small space also comes with a dining table and a fully-equipped kitchen and bathroom. In the two-person cabins, one queen bed has up-close views of the forest. In the four-person cabins (the maximum number of people allowed), two queen beds are stacked, bunk-bed style, for fun summer camp vibes.
MAY 2022
Recharging
I’m excited to have unscheduled, unstructured, and uninterrupted free time with my dad and dog, Theodore. I cherish the break from routine and technology. I not only need to reconnect with those I was traveling with, but also with myself, my soul, and my mind. I need to be inspired and motivated again.
What really matters
In the morning, we boil tea and whip up eggs over the electric stove. I take Theodore out for a walk along the nearby stream while my dad plays Sudoku. A rainstorm on the second day of our stay gives us even more reason to slow down and marvel at the natural world around us. We take shelter in our cabin, play card games, and peruse the mini collection of books provided for us. The mesmerizing window—an entire wall of the wooden box—gives us front row seats to our own private nature show. To fully enjoy Getaway, guests are encouraged to embrace the disconnection. After just two days off the grid—surrounded by nature, cooking meals over a fire pit with two of the most important figures in my life—it’s not hard for me to realize what matters, or doesn’t matter, most in life. And I know I won’t find it on my Instagram feed.
I set out to explore our tiny habitat (it doesn’t take long). I organize our belongings to maximize the space and we set out on a nature walk. Getaway provides all guests with suggestions for several nearby activities, including walking or hiking trails and wineries. We pass the other cabins and see a group of teenagers playing games, an older couple sipping tea by a fire, and a young family of four with two dogs.
The evenings at Getaway are even more magical. Once the sun sets, my dad starts a fire. The three of us gather around the flames, two of us reading under the stars while Theodore makes use of his long leash. I look up from my book and see hundreds of shining stars. For dinner, we cook food wrapped in foil on a grate over wood that we foraged from the forest bed. We eat at the picnic table and devour dessert thanks to Getaway’s complimentary s’mores kit. We go to sleep early, full, and happy. www.cpmagazine.net

EMERALD THE BIRTHSTONE OF MAY May is here, and with its green shoots and sense of rebirth, comes a renewed focus on emeralds, the fitting birthstone of May. Twenty times more rare than colourless diamonds and credited with everything from curing snakebites to easing childbirth, emeralds have always had an aura of healing about them. Gemfields has been mining emeralds since 2008, when it acquired the Kagem mine in Zambia in partnership with the local government. Zambian emeralds are

amongst the world’s most sought-after as they are known for their extraordinarily deep colour and represent some of the largest and most exceptional emeralds ever found. Without doubt, the greatest joy in owning an emerald is deciding how to style it. An emerald can take centre stage, juxtaposed against a gold band, when worn as a ring, as with Fabergé’s featuring Gemfields Cosmic Curve ring from the Colours of Love collection.
consideration is how rare the gemstone is, as rarity is associated with higher value. Ultimately, though, it comes down to taste, as each emerald is utterly unique.
There are also a few cardinal rules when caring for emeralds. To avoid scratches, never store them next to a diamond – the hardest material known to man – or a ruby or sapphire, which are almost as hard. Emeralds can be quite fragile so must not be placed in an ultrasonic cleaner and should be kept away from liquids like perfumes and alcohols and removed before showering.
Without doubt, the greatest joy in owning an emerald is deciding how to style it. An emerald can take centre stage, juxtaposed against a gold band, when worn as a ring, as with Fabergé’s featuring Gemfields Cosmic Curve ring from the Colours of Love collection. In a similar classic style, with its sleek band of flawless emeralds, is the Valani Atelier x Gemfields Meredith bracelet. The Shachee Fine Jewellery x Gemfields Petrichor necklace makes imaginative use of emeralds, weaving gold into lace and reviving the micro mosaic to produce a piece that feels like wearable art. But perhaps the most popular way to wear emeralds is as earrings, with a huge range of styles to choose from, from dangly to modest studs: the Margery Hirschey x Gemfields geometricstyle drop earrings combine ancient techniques with a modern sensibility, while the Sandy Leong x Gemfields Oversized Origin hoops feature Gemfields’ Zambian emeralds alongside diamonds atop large gold hoops. For something smaller and more subtle, the Misahara x Gemfields Water Lily studs have a delicate floral motif, inspired by nature. Twenty times more rare than colourless diamonds and credited with everything from curing snakebites to easing childbirth, emeralds have always had an aura of healing about them. Not surprisingly, these glittering green gems have been beloved by everyone from Cleopatra, who used to present them to subjects as talismans, to Catherine the Great, Queen Victoria and Elizabeth Taylor. Ancient Egyptians viewed them as sacred; early Christians believed they represented the resurrection of Christ; Indian Mughal emperors saw their greenness as an emblem of paradise; and Romans believed they could revitalise the souls of all who wore them.
However, you choose to style them, emeralds are just the thing to impart the freshness of this joyous season.
These talismanic properties, coupled with their fresh verdant hue, make emeralds a perfect partner for the glorious month of May: when the land thaws, buds with flower and bursts into a haze of green.
Gemfields has been mining emeralds since 2008, when it acquired the Kagem mine in Zambia in partnership with the local government. Zambian emeralds are amongst the world’s most sought-after, thought to be more than 500 million years old, and more robust than other origins due to their high iron content. They are known for their extraordinarily deep colour and represent some of the largest and most exceptional emeralds ever found. When looking to buy an emerald, it is important to bear a few things in mind. First, one should look for evenness of colour with good saturation and try to judge the gemstone in natural light to best assess this. Second, it is crucial to purchase your emerald from a source who can be trusted to have mined it with integrity and transparency and can present proof of this; if buying a significant gemstone, one might request a certificate from a trusted gemmological laboratory. FormerlyMe.com presents “On The Go: Cruises”
WHAT IS FORMERLYME?
Jim West
FormerlyMe is an online movement to motivate and inspire people to become the best version of themselves by showing them my journey and experience in trying a new workout and lifestyle regime every 30 days. Every post, update, and video is ‘formerly me’ as I endeavor to become the best version of myself and become FormerlyMe. Each month CP Magazine will showcase a part of my journey to becoming the best version of myself. I hope that in turn this inspires and motivates you to start your own journey as well. For this month’s story we will focus on the “On The Go: Cruises” days of my journey. 20
MAY 2022
Towards the end of 2021, I had begun a series of back to back cruises. The stops I would get a chance to explore extensively for several weeks were Cozumel, Belize, and Roatan. I had sailed a few times to the eastern Caribbean to visit the Bahamas. Now I would be visiting the western Caribbean. One of the things top of my list to see were Mayan Temples. I absolutely love history and to get to see and walk among the ruins was quite the experience to have while in Belize.
Altun Ha Mayan Temple Ruins
Finally there was Cozumel. I got out to the city center and walked the streets and took in the sights and sounds of a city coming back alive as tourists are coming back. Going through the shutdown and pandemic gave me a renewed appreciation of travel and how important it is for not only businesses, but the people who support and work at these businesses to earn a living. The ability to be able to travel is a gift and one that I, now more than ever, did not want to let go to waste.
At the next stop in Honduras I would get perhaps the most unexpected experience. I have been to a few animal encounter experiences such as the gators in Orlando, and had a dolphin experience in Egypt. These are typically very pricey and you can't take your own photos and videos. At Daniel Johnson's Monkey and Sloth Hangout you get not only one animal encounter experience, but three. Sloths, macaws, and monkeys are all there for such a low cost and it was one of the most memorable experiences I have ever had.
Follow my journey online at FormerlyMe.com and on the YouTube channel. Next month I will cover my more unique experiences I had in 2021-2022. Until next time that has been FormerlyMe! facebook.com/FormerlyMe twitter.com/MeFormerly instagram.com/formerlymeofficial www.cpmagazine.net

cartonlab
Pablo García CARTONLAB:
cardboard design for a better world When you imagine that it is impossible to discover new objects and designs made of cardboard, the talent of projects led by young people surprises you. Like the Spanish studio cartonLAB, they like a challenge! And they continue to innovate with ingenious and innovative designs. All of them, of course, made of cardboard and with flat packaging to facilitate shipping and transport and reduce the carbon footprint. CartonLAB takes product design and interior design to a new dimension by using cardboard as an organic and environmentally friendly material in all of its projects. Their philosophy is to combine the principles of sustainability, creativity and contemporary design. The studio was born from the design team of Moho Architects, seeking with this new adventure to combine the design and production of different projects where the main material is cardboard. Set up in Murcia, in Southern Spain, in 2009, they have designed over 300 projects in trade shows, retail floors, pop-up stores, art exhibitions and many other areas. This award-winning studio have already completed a large number of projects for brands and companies all over the world, from Hawaii or Venice to Miami and Kuala Lumpur and recently New York, where they were in charge of building the popup store for the American brand Nuhü Division together with the architect Javier Jiménez of Studio Animal. A space designed under a clear premise, sustainability, of which both parties are standard bearers, given that cardboard is one of the most ecological materials available and Nuhü's casual garments are characterised by being made from 100% organic cotton. The connection and harmony between the parties has meant that the launch of this avant-garde and temporary shop has been achieved in record time: just one month, including design, manufacturing and assembly processes. They designed their own fun and stylish cardboard furniture line too which is available at their ecommerce shop. Check it out! Our lifestyle editor, José Berrocoso, chats with Pablo García, one of the cartonLAB founders, to find out about the scope of recycling in a new chapter for architecture and design. 24

Talent Radar Words: JOSÉ BERROCOSO
“We believe in a new culture of contemporary design based in innovation and sustainability. We are an architecture studio focused in cardboard creations. Cardboard is a wonderful material to express your values. It is recyclable, lightweight, easy to ship and assemble, resists heavyweights and durable” www.cpmagazine.net

CityPages Magazine: Cartonlab was founded in 2010, what is the philosophy behind the project? Pablo García: There has always been a “lab” vocation. A space for research in order to explore the limits offered by designing with a material as special as cardboard. A material that allows us, from a responsible and ecological positioning, to respond to multiple issues that the current society demands, mainly in the sector of ephemeral installations and events.
CPM: With all the advancements in materials technology, cardboard has become more than just the “thick kind of paper” you use to make boxes or packaging. What are the benefits of using cardboard? PG: One of the most obvious characteristics of cardboard is its lightness. Although we use all kinds of different ones, depending on the type of project, the heavier cardboard sheet will always be much lighter than one of any other material. This allows us to easily manipulate it and optimize transport logistics. As everything is transported disassembled, in flat packs, we ´re even able to ship in a single big pallet, the materials to build up a whole installation. However, we speak of a surprisingly resistant material, as long as it has a proper structural design. With it, we have designed stages, platforms, structural beams, and all kinds of functional and resistant furniture. CPM: What about the environmental benefits? PG: It’s a big advantage being working with one of the most ecological materials, mostly in a context in which no one doubts about the need of positioning a company in terms of Corporate Social Responsibility. Producedinpart from recycled cellulose, with quality seals that guarantee the origin of the paper from well managed forests, and being 100% recyclable for later use, cardboard becomes an unbeatable material when it comes to control its traceability and to be able to close the circle between productionmanipulated-consumption and recycling.
CPM: CartonLAB designs and produces booths, events, pop-up stores, exhibitions... What has been the most original/weird request so far? PG: We can find cardboard industry absolutely everywhere. That makes it much easier to think about working with it as a fully exportable concept. We have always thought of cartonlab as a company with a global vocation, capable of adapting to the times in which the “unlocation” of services allows us to manage projects from any of our two headquarters (Murcia / Miami), or even take the advantage of a growing network of proximity suppliers if needed. The most extreme example of this came with one big booth work, in which we received an order from the Russian government, with an intermediate from Genève (Switzerland) was designed it in Murcia, produced it in Miami and shipped to Hawaii, where we assembled it. 26

MAY 2022
CPM: Tell us about the coolest projects that you have developed with CartonLAB. PG: Cardboard is a material that allows to achieve, in a very short time, to generate a fully personalized and unique project. In this sense, we are fortunate to have carried out dozens of projects of different kinds all over the world. Perhaps because it is a recent one and because the stars aligned in the best of ways (situation, clients, brand, recognitions...), we have a special affection for the New York Pop Up Store whose article accompanies this interview. CPM: Back in January 2020, when the interiors of the Olympic village were first unveiled, the sustainable low-carbon cardboard beds immediately grabbed attention. What’s the future of the cardboard? PG: Although "functional" cardboard furniture has been around for quite a few years now, it's surprising that it's still in the news. This gives an idea of the enormous field of opportunity that lies ahead of us and that companies like ours are trying to lead. CPM: What are the latest trends of cardboard? PG: It´s incredible how day by day it is consolidating as a material that can be found in so many different markets and formats; furniture, interior design, scenography and even fashion.
CPM: What´s the future of the industry? PG: Large carton companies linked to the packaging industry and its R&D must step forward and feed the market with truly innovative products that allow us to think of much more ambitious applications for cardboard through qualities that at first may seem alien to this material (resistance to fire, water...). From there, its consolidation in markets such as construction can be unstoppable. CPM: Any plans for the Middle East region? PG: Any ideas? We´re fully open to talk ;)…

A HOTEL WITH ITS OWN PERSONALITY
Asturias is honest, authentic, full of life, respectful of the past and present, attentive, courageous, welcoming, modern and cosmopolitan. Whether you’re looking for a relaxed getaway or an adrenaline-filled one , you can’t go wrong with Gran Hotel El Brillante in San Esteban de Pravia. Pack your stuff, your next trip awaits!
www.cpmagazine.net
31
By land, sea or air. It doesn't matter how you get to Asturias, in northern Spain. The lofty sight of the steep Cantabrian Mountains, with their rolling green valleys which meet the coastline in an abrupt outline which falls off into the deep blue Cantabrian Sea, captivates you before you even step foot in Asturias. This is just the start of a unique experience for which you are going to need all five senses. Without them you will not be able to taste its gastronomy, be stunned by its architecture, breathe its nature, listen to its urban heartbeat or enjoy its hospitality. We travel to San Esteban de Pravia, a small fishing village on the left bank of the Nalón estuary, just a few metres from its mouth in the Cantabrian Sea where the building that housed the mythical pension ‘Brillante’, inaugurated in 1905, reopened its doors last year as ‘Gran Hotel Boutique Brillante’.
Due to its impressive natural location, San Esteban has attracted the attention of artists. At the beginning of the 20th century it hosted a remarkable colony among which was the prominent Nicaraguan poet Rubén Darío. But in addition to its artistic vocation, San Esteban has a cosmopolitan feeling; its Indian past manifested in its overseas architecture and in the palm trees of its private gardens. 32
MAY 2022
In August 1904, coinciding with the arrival of the railway to San Esteban de Pravia and the dawn of a golden age marked by the incipient industry and the splendour of the bourgeois class, the notable Asturian journalist, Edmundo Díaz del Riego, inaugurated the Brillante. Gran Hotel Boutique Brillante keeps alive the history and preserves all the charm of the early 20th century, when the seaport of the village was one of the most important ones in Spain. The establishment faithfully preserves the essence of the old Hospedería.
The property is now considered one of the best boutique accommodations in the area. It has 14 rooms including the main suite, Rubén Darío, and 8 private residences for guests who want to stay longer. It has a modern interior design with Colonial details and uniquely decorated rooms. You can enjoy a drink or evening meal in the hotel's stylish Restaurant. Try the tasting menu with local gastronomy and plenty seafood and fish and a good winne served chilled or a glass of champagne Laurent Perrier. www.cpmagazine.net

MAY 2022
There is nothing better than starting the morning enjoying a good breakfast with freshly squeezed orange juice. The hotel has a wide range of hand-made pastries, made every day in its own bakery. The wide and exquisite selection of homemade biscuits, frixuelos, toasts, show cooking of scrambled eggs, omelettes, seasonal fruits, a selection of cold meats and cheeses, jams, dried fruits, cereals, yoghurts... and a selection of bread rolls stand out.
Exclusivity, privacy and a chic touch create a special atmosphere of harmony and respect for the incomparable natural environment and local history in every corner of Gran Hotel El Brillante. You will undoubtedly enjoy a pleasant, relaxed experience, and you will be able to get to know the surrounding villages such as Cudillero or Somao. Asturias is Spain’s best-kept secret, it is a perfect destination for those looking to get away from mass tourism. Add this cozy region to your bucket list!

Ralph Lauren (NYSE:RL) announces the celebration of its most iconic product – the Polo Shirt – alongside Ralph Lauren’s Polo Shirt, a new coffee table book published by Rizzoli International. This quintessential, singular piece of clothing is ubiquitous and has served as the canvas for the lifestyles and worlds that have inspired Ralph Lauren since 1972.
At the centerpiece of the campaign, Rizzoli International will publish Ralph Lauren’s Polo Shirt (170 AED), which is a fascinating look back at the history of the enduring wardrobe classic. With beautiful photography, an introduction by Ralph Lauren, and an afterword by David Lauren, the book shines the spotlight on the shirt, itself. Embodying a chic casualness that is uniquely American, the Polo shirt is a cultural symbol, worn by everyone from movie stars and presidents to athletes and artists. As stated within the first chapter, “The Polo shirt is to Ralph Lauren what Mickey Mouse is to Disney or the Empire State Building is to New York City.” Whether worn with the collar popped up, open and untucked, or dressed up under a suit jacket, the Polo embodies the optimism of American style. For over five decades, the Polo shirt has journeyed everywhere, creating memories for all who have made it part of their lives. It became not only a canvas for Lauren’s artistry, but a backdrop and inspiration for many dreams, hopes, and ambitions for people all over the world. This 544-page compendium celebrates and documents the iconic
style and influential impact of the Polo Shirt, which has never been defined by the latest trend. A juxtaposition of modernity and heritage, tradition and individuality, refinement and ease, it always endures and continues to evolve in innovative and sustainable ways. As seen through historic imagery and told through the personal stories of celebrities, politicians and presidents, royals, world class athletes, as well as everyday people, the book showcases various individuals who have made the Polo their own and inspired others to follow suit along the way. From the classic white to the weathered Polo, from the Earth Polo to the US Olympics, the US Open, and Wimbledon Championship collaborations, this unique volume celebrates the full spectrum of the Polo, making it a collector’s dream.
To further amplify the campaign and bring Ralph Lauren’s loyal customers into the fold, the Company invites everyone to join the conversation, and style their favorite shirt or share a fun memory across social platforms by using the hashtag #MyPoloShirtStory and tagging @PoloRalphLauren. Fans, friends and followers will also be able to share their own personal story and unlock an exclusive experience through an official Snapchat lens. Audiences will be able to explore a 3D version of Ralph Lauren’s Polo Shirt in their Snapchat app world view, with the ability to interact with stories from those who have worn it, loved it and made it their own. The lens can be accessed via Ralph Lauren stores, social channels, and digital properties via a scannable Snapcode. www.cpmagazine.net

STINGRAY C8
The first-generation Chevrolet Corvette debuted back in 1953. Since then, it has maintained its status as the quintessential American muscle car. There have been seven generations of Corvette, each delivering the sleek exterior design and roaring power the lineup has become known for. Now, there’s a new eighthgeneration here with a huge update in style that is instantly shaking things up with a revolutionary mid-engine design. Some people likened the new shape to Ferrari or McLaren, which is hardly bad company to be in.

With its all-new 6.2L LT2 V8 engine, generating a 2021 Chevrolet Corvette C8 horsepower of 495. Designed to sit lower for better handling on tracks and highways, the engine employs a standard dry-sump system to enhance performance when g-forces are high. Meanwhile, Continuously Variable Valve Timing further heightens performance. Corvette has taken huge steps in pushing the boundaries of engineering to deliver a machine that combines exotic car design and track performance.

For my custom build I selected the Z51 Performance Package. This option adds a sportier suspension setup, beefed-up Brembo brakes, an electronic limited slip differential, and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires. All these help the car corner like its on rails, and the Z51 Performance Suspension with Magnetic Selective Ride Control maximizes the track capabilities of this car, while also improving on-road comfort. Whether you're driving the new Corvette on the road or at the track, drivers of all skill levels will enjoy this car immensely. Additionally I opted for the
front lift adjustable ride height making it possible to go over large speed bumps and up steep driveways without worrying about scraping the front bumper. A neat feature is the car can store GPS coordinates in memory of locations where you need to raise the front end such as your home driveway to eliminate the need to push the button every time.
I took delivery of my custom ordered C8 in January 2021. I was fortunate that I had to wait less than 60 days from order to delivery. Many people were not as fortunate to receive theirs due to high demand, supply chain issues, and pandemic shutdowns had many waiting over a year to receive their custom builds from the factory. My first impressions when I first saw it was “Wow!” this is like the Batman car! That is exactly what I hear from people when they also see it. One of the best things about driving this car is watching the reactions people had to this car was almost as entertaining as driving it. Necks would snap and cars driving beside me would either slow down or speed up to check out the car. Everywhere

I went in the car it drew attention and people would come snap pictures or take selfies next to the car. I even got offered 20,000 USD (6134 KWD) over retail price to buy my car in a grocery store parking lot.

MAY 2022
I stand about 6 ft 4 in (1.93 m) and the interior has plenty of legroom for me compared to most Lamborghinis. Starting up the car you get a tremendous growl as the engine come alive. Then when you press the petal the explosive acceleration is astounding. You immediately fall in love the roar of the naturally aspirated V8 engine. I drove this car as my daily driver for seven
months and took a 6 hour road trip to New Orleans in it. The only downsides is the limited trunk space as it comes with a front trunk space (frunk) and a rear trunk space. If you manually take off the top of the roof it takes up all the storage space in the rear. Grocery shopping in this car is next to impossible as the frunk has enough space for a small ice chest and the rear has enough space for a set of gold clubs. Then again this car isn’t made for trips to the supermarket, it is made to turn heads in the streets and press you back in the seat from its horsepower on the highway.
As orders eventually get delivered for the new 2023 Z06 Performance edition, you will soon get to see the Corvette with the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 in production deliver 670 horsepower with a 2.6 second 0-60mph time. That will certainly establish Corvette as a supercar
amongst the likes of Ferrari, McLaren, and Lamborghini with a sticker price that is significantly less than that list. This new direction by Corvette has them finally elevating an American car to true supercar status at an affordable price tag.

LAUNCH OF NEXT-GEN ABAYAS CREATED FROM HIGH-END FURNITURE FABRIC Asha Middle East, a Dubai-based homegrown fashion house fusing Western flair and Middle Eastern tradition into Abaya design, has launched a first-of-a-kind Abaya collection using Spanish blends of durable, anti-crease high-end furniture fabric.
Arabian fashion innovation with a Western twist has been at the heart of Asha’s strategy since inception. The company was the first to refashion Western design into Abayas, inventing blazer-like, raincoat and high-neck Abayas with bracelet sleeves. Vlada Horo, Fashion Designer and Founder of Asha Middle East, commented: “My vision was to create a place where Western fashion meets Middle Eastern tradition. Asha Middle East was born to diversify the face of Abayas and give women a wide array of custom-made, West-Mideast fusions to choose from, reminding them of their uniqueness and enabling them to express their personal preferences while remaining true to their culture.”
In Arabic culture, Abayas tend to follow the same design and patterns. The traditional garments are often mass-produced with the same cut and design elements such as color variants, crystals or embroidery.
“We do what local designers don’t. While they all work with one cut and add details such as embroidery or sparkly features, our collections are custom-built and present nontraditional Abaya designs. Every Abaya design we create is a distinct cut. We take Western fashion components and blend them into Abaya design, introducing stylish, functional and culturally relevant aspects such as buckles, loose sleeves, hoods that can be used as head covers,” Vlada added.
46
With profound respect and love for Middle Eastern culture, Asha was created to unite Western fashion trends and the tradition of the Middle East. The brand is loved, worn and adored by women in the Arab world, Europe and the US. The garments are made-to-measure and handcrafted by generational specialists.

TIPS FOR CREATING AND FOLLOWING AN ASTHMA ACTION PLAN Being prepared is key for asthma patients and those who care for them Creating an action plan in consultation with a physician is an important step in preventing unexpected asthma attacks, and patients as well as those who care for them should understand how to create and use an action plan, says an expert from global health system Cleveland Clinic ahead of World Asthma Day on 3 May.
“It’s important for asthma patients and those who care for them to understand what their symptoms are and what they have to do if they’re getting worse,” says Cleveland Clinic pulmonary medicine specialist Nirosshan Thiruchelvam, MD. “It’s also important for patients to work with their healthcare providers to improve their symptoms rather than allowing them to get worse.” An asthma action plan prepares patients in case of an attack, while also improving their day-to-day lives. This plan can serve as a tool for patients as well as their caregivers and physicians. For parents, it’s an important resource for their child’s school nurse and teachers. Asthma plans usually include contact information and

a list of medications that are divided into traffic colors or “zones”, usually color-coded in green, yellow and red. These zones help determine what steps to take depending on the severity of symptoms. The plan should also list items such as a person’s immunization history, including the dates of receiving flu and COVID-19 vaccinations. The different stages of the asthma plan make it clear what medications to use and what additional steps to take based on the symptoms. “The asthma plan takes any guesswork out of deciding what to do when a patient has an asthma attack,” Dr. Thiruchelvam explains. “Individualized care is key,” adds Dr. Thiruchelvam. “Especially when you’re treating asthma, there are two different paths. One is avoiding triggers and the other is treating the symptoms.”
As a plan isn’t one-size-fits-all, patients will fill in the different zones of their personal asthma plans when they see their physician. This should be updated during office
Dr. Nirosshan Thiruchelvam
visits to monitor any improving or weakening symptoms, Dr. Thiruchelvam says. “It’s going to be a living document, so it’s not going to be set in stone. The controller medication might be different and things might change.” Here, Dr. Thiruchelvam outlines elements of a typical asthma action plan, as well as additional steps to take in the case of a child having an asthma attack.
medicine isn’t helping and breathing is hard and fast, the patient is having trouble speaking, their nose is opening wide or, in children, their ribs are showing. In addition to taking the medications listed for the red zone, patients or the person taking care of them should contact their doctor immediately, or if this is not possible, go directly to an emergency room.
Contact information
Personalized best peak flow
Symptoms and medications by zones
Triggers
The asthma action plan should contain important contact information, including the patient’s name, their doctor’s information, and the name and phone number of an emergency contact. It should also include the date the plan was created, so anyone reviewing will know how current it is.
One section should include a list of symptoms to identify. Based on those, the patient’s doctor fills out the appropriate steps to take. Depending on the triggers, symptoms and previous steps taken, each zone lists certain medications and actions to take The green ‘Go’ zone lists the medications the patient takes daily to control their asthma. In the green zone, the patient is able to get a good night’s sleep, breathe at a good rate without any coughing or wheezing, work and play during the day. The green zone will also list what medication should be taken in the event of exercise-induced asthma.
The yellow ‘Caution’ zone lists additional steps the patient should take, on top of continuing all of the green zone medications. Patients would follow these steps if they had the first signs of a cold, exposure to an unknown trigger, a cough, mild wheezing or feelings of a tight chest, or coughing at night. In addition to taking the yellow zone medications indicated, patients should call their asthma care provider to update them on their status. The red ‘Danger’ zone comes into play if the asthma continues to worsen even after patients have taken the medications outlined in the green and yellow zones. This section lists additional medications a patient should take when other
Peak flow refers to how quickly a patient can push air out of the lungs when he or she blows out as hard and as fast as possible. Everyone’s peak flow is different and is found by using a peak flow meter. The personal best flow should be recorded in the plan, as well as the peak flows for each zone on the plan. Everyone has different triggers that could set off an attack, whether it be a change in weather or seasons, certain foods, dust, exercise or even emotional triggers, and these should be mentioned in the plan.
Follow the 4:4:4 rule for children
In addition to the steps in the action plan, the 4:4:4 rule is important to know when children are having an active attack. This shortcut will help the parent, child minder or teacher remember the specifics for helping the child to use their inhaler during an attack. When a child is showing shortness of breath, tightness in their chest, wheezing or other severe symptoms of asthma, the 4:4:4 rule is as follows: nHave
the child sit upright. four puffs, one at a time, from their inhaler. nWait four minutes. nIf there is no improvement, give another four puffs. nGive
By creating an asthma action plan and knowing the 4:4:4 rule, patients and those who care for them can be confident they are prepared for a possible asthma attack. Copies of the plan should be available at home, at the physician’s office and at any school or daycare center for children. www.cpmagazine.net

Hiking, swimming or mountainbiking? Liechtenstein may be small, but it offers something for everyone in just 160 km²,. And one thing’s for sure: wherever you are staying in the country, you can get anywhere you want to be within half an hour, either by car or using the local bus. Visitors with a passion for outdoor sports are spoilt for choice thanks to the country’s 400 km of wellsignposted walking paths stretching from the valley floor up into the mountains, from gentle walks to challenging multi-day hikes in the Alps. Mountainbikers can also explore an abundance of clearly marked trails ideal for all abilities, while around 100 km of gentle cycle paths are a great way to discover the country and its sights on two wheels.
Situated in a protected position at 1600 metres above sea level, the Alpine village of Malbun offers guaranteed snow, modern lifts, 23 km of pistes and a children’s area known as “malbi-park”. Its family- facilities have even seen it receive the Families Welcome Award. The nearby region of Steg-Valüna is a paradise for crosscountry skiers and provides 15 km of idyllic trails catering for both the traditional classic technique and the more modern skating technique. 60

Route 66: Cross Liechtenstein in hiking boots Liechtenstein has a surface area of 160 km2 and over 400 kilometres of signed hiking trails. One highlight is the 48-kilometre Liechtenstein Panorama Trail– indicated with the number 66. The trail leads from Malbun in the south to Ruggell in the north, through practically every part of the Principality. A picturebook trail: wild, almost untouched and offering wonderful views.
The first stage begins in the familyfriendly holiday centre of Malbun. The Fürstin-Gina-Weg rises to Augstenberg at an altitude of 2,359 metres, the highest peak in Liechtenstein that is not a border mountain. Following the first peak, the trail descends to the Pfälzerhütte, a mountain lodge where a first break can be taken. The trail then continues gently through the Naaf Valley, via the Alpelti to the Sücka mountain guesthouse, where hikers can spend the night. A special feature of this hiking trail is the wealth of flora. Hikers can discover almost all 800 of Liechtenstein's species of alpine plants along the route.

61
Fürstensteig and Drei Schwestern Two classic highlights await hikers during the second stage. From Sücka, the trail continues on the Gratrücken ridge, along the largest part of the tour to the Fürstensteig trail. The Fürstensteg is a unique experience for hikers with a head for heights and sure feet. The trail, which is hewn into the rock and was opened in 1898, is one of the most famous paths in the Rätikon region. Following the impressive Fürstensteig, the legendary "Drei Schwestern" ("Three Sisters") mountain ridge awaits. According to legend, three sisters were turned into rock here, because they went gathering berries on a Sunday, instead of going to church. The Kuhgrat (2,123 meters above sea-level) is the highest point on this varied stage, offering splendid views of Rätikon, the Swiss and Vorarlberg mountains. This stage ends at the Gafadura Mountain Lodge, where hikers can enjoy fine food and reflect upon their adventures.
62
MAY 2022
From the mountains to the valley Nature-lovers will particularly enjoy the final stage. The route leads from the mountains down into the valley. Passing Nendeln and Mauren, the route takes hikers through Schellenberg. At just 626 metres above sea-level, the municipality of the same name is not considered a mountain municipality by Liechtensteiners. Schellenberg is located on the high ridge of Eschnerberg, which extends as an isolated mountain from north to east from Bendern (FL) to Feldkirch (A). Its secure high altitude above the Rhine Valley made Eschnerberg a favoured settlement site in the pre-historical era. Archaeological excavations have demonstrated that there has been a continuous settlement here since approx. 5000 BC. From Schellenberg the trail descends. www.cpmagazine.net

Tell us about your education. I received a Bachelor of Science degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Illinois at ChampaignUrbana and a Master of Science degree in journalism from the University of Southern California.
Do you have any early travel memories that fueled your passion for exploring the world?
I took my first flight with my parents when I was three months old. My father is trying to go to every country in the world and growing up I tagged along on his trips as much as I possibly could. In other words, I spent more days traveling than I did in a classroom…oops!
What fuels your passion for travel?
Knowing that there are so many cultures I have yet to learn about, so many people I have yet to meet, so many sites I have yet to see, so many traditions I have yet to experience, and so much food I have yet to taste.
How did you work your way into travel writing?
I knew I was going to go into journalism because of my studies, but I didn’t decide on entering the travel journalism world until I interned for CNN Travel in Hong Kong. That’s when I realized I truly loved my assignments and I was actually passionate about my work.
66
MAY 2022
How did you first get published? Through my internship at CNN Travel. I had to write an article a week for their website.
How many different publications do you write for? I freelance and have written for about 10 different publications in total.
What do you enjoy the most about travel writing? That I have the flexibility to work remotely, that I have the freedom to set my own hours, that I am able to two combine two things that I absolutely love (travel and writing) and most importantly that I never have to give up traveling.
What has been your biggest challenge as a travel writer?
Trying to lead a balanced lifestyle. It’s definitely difficult to maintain any type of relationship with people (family, friends, etc.) when I’m constantly on the road and it’s even harder for people to understand why I love doing what I do.
Do you also take photos for your articles? Do you think travel writers should do their own photography? Why?
I do take photos but they’re usually only for personal use. Publications often want high resolution images that would most likely require me to have an actual camera (not just my iPhone). With this being said, some publications have used my images before. It really depends on the article and what type of images are needed. Scenic shots I can usually master, but food, hotel and portrait shots I’m not as professionally versed in. If travel writers do their own photography then they should definitely get paid more. I also like the idea of separating travel writers from travel photographers though.
How do you see bloggers changing or contributing to the ongoing evolution of travel writing?
Their content is real, personable, unfiltered, and unedited. What I don’t love is when bloggers write posts because they have been sponsored or they’re getting paid by the brand to write/advertise for them. I feel this is biased and doesn’t give readers a true sense of what a property, destination, restaurant, etc. is like. I see more and more people become bloggers because really anyone can be a blogger, you don’t need experience. I assume people will slowly phase out from reading travel articles from credible sources and will use blogs as their go-to… but I hope no time soon!
What characteristics do you think all good travel writers have in common? A sense of curiosity, a need for adventure, empathy towards other people, an open mind and patience.
What has been assignment?
your

That’s hard to answer! Probably a documentary I produced in Tanzania that exposed the poor living and school conditions of the locals. I was able to visit some of the children’s homes and get a true feel for how they live, what they need from us, what their dreams are and taking that content to the States to raise awareness.

What makes a great travel story?
What are some of your other hobbies besides travelling?
One that was not thought of or planned in advance. One that developed from meeting a stranger or getting lost.
Reading, dancing, basically all watersports, skiing
Winning an Emmy.
It has been wonderful! I love that I have the freedom to write about any travel-related topics that I am interested in!
It’s okay to not stick to a plan. The best memories come from unplanned events.
It was my third photoshoot ever and it was so much fun! It’s so hard for me to keep a straight face, I always want to laugh so I appreciate the team not strangling me for that. I also thoroughly enjoyed being able to shoot with my dog who is near and dear to my heart as I rescued her from the streets a few years ago.
What are some of your biggest achievements so far?
What is the most important thing you have learned from travel?
What skills have you picked up from being on the road so much?
A few words in most languages, patience, and easily meeting new people. You didn’t ask, but a skill I have NOT picked up is how to pack lightly!
How has been your experience writing for CP magazine and being a part of the team?
How was the experience and inspiration behind the recent photoshoot?
Your message for the readers.

NEW MAY RELEASES
Son of Elsewhere: A Memoir in Pieces by Elamin Abdelmahmoud At twelve years old, Elamin Abdelmahmoud emigrates with his family from his native Sudan to Kingston, Ontario, arguably one of the most homogenous cities in North America. At the airport, he's handed his Blackness like a passport, and realizes that he needs to learn what this identity means in a new country. Like all teens, Abdelmahmoud spent his adolescence trying to figure out who he was, but he had to do it while learning to balance a new racial identity and all the false assumptions that came with it. Abdelmahmoud learned to fit in, and eventually became "every liberal white dad's favorite person in the room." But after many years spent trying on different personalities, he now must face the parts of himself he's kept suppressed all this time. He asks, "What happens when those identities stage a jailbreak?" In his debut collection of essays, Abdelmahmoud gives full voice to each and every one of these conflicting selves. Whether reflecting on how The O.C. taught him about falling in love, why watching wrestling allowed him to reinvent himself, or what it was like being a Muslim teen in the aftermath of 9/11, Abdelmahmoud explores how our experiences and our environments help us in the continuing task of defining who we truly are.

My Seven Black Fathers: The Men Who Made Me Whole
by Will Jawando My Seven Black Fathers is a memoir like few others--both the story of Yemi, a boy with an African name who feels awkward and alone as he is shunted from school to school, and a powerful consideration of the role of race, masculinity, education, and family in the lives of Black boys in the United States today. Inspired by Will Jawando's experience as a civil rights and education policy attorney, as well as by his involvement in My Brother's Keeper, President Barack Obama's hugely effective mentorship program for young men of color, this book explores the bonds that developed between the author and the host of father figures who formed him: Mr. Williams, the math teacher who taught him how to tie his first tie; Joseph, the stepfather who altered his understanding of family; Jay Fletcher, the openly gay colleague of his mother's who introduced him to the theater; Mr. Holmes, the high school chorus director who taught him to use his voice and saw him through a crushing disappointment; and Deen Sanwoola, who helped him bridge the gap between his American upbringing and his Nigerian heritage--eventually leading to a reconciliation with his biological father.
Patriarchy Blues: Reflections on Manhood
by Sarai Walker
by Frederick Joseph
New Mexico, 2017: Sylvia Wren is one of the most important American artists of the past century. Known as a recluse, she avoids all public appearances. There’s a reason: she’s living under an assumed identity, having outrun a tragic past. But when a hungry journalist starts chasing her story, she’s confronted with whom she once was: Iris Chapel. Connecticut, 1950: Iris Chapel is the second youngest of six sisters, all heiresses to a firearms fortune. They’ve grown up cloistered in a palatial Victorian house, mostly neglected by their distant father and troubled mother, who believes that their house is haunted by the victims of Chapel weapons. The girls long to escape, and for most of them, the only way out is marriage. But not long after the first Chapel sister walks down the aisle, she dies of mysterious causes, a tragedy that repeats with the second, leaving the rest to navigate the wreckage, to heart-wrenching consequences. Ultimately, Iris flees the devastation of her family, and so begins the story of Sylvia Wren. But can she outrun the family curse forever?
What does it mean to be a man today? How does the pervasive yet elusive idea of "toxic masculinity" actually reflect men's experiences--particularly those of color--and how they navigate the world? In this thought-provoking collection of essays, poems, and short reflections, Frederick Joseph contemplates these questions and more as he explores issues of masculinity and patriarchy from both a personal and cultural standpoint. From fatherhood, and "manning up" to abuse and therapy, he fearlessly and thoughtfully tackles the complex realities of men's lives today and their significance for society, lending his insights as a Black man. Written in Joseph's unique voice, with an intelligence and raw honesty that demonstrates both his vulnerability and compassion, Patriarchy Blues forces us to consider the joys, pains, and destructive nature of manhood and the stereotypes it engenders.

Fly Girl: A Memoir
Mother Noise
In 1978, in the tailwind of the golden age of air travel, flight attendants were the epitome of glamor and sophistication. Fresh out of college and hungry to experience the world—and maybe, one day, write about it—Ann Hood joined their ranks. After a grueling job search, Hood survived TWA’s rigorous Breech Training Academy and learned to evacuate seven kinds of aircraft, deliver a baby, mix proper cocktails, administer oxygen, and stay calm no matter what the situation. In the air, Hood found both the adventure she’d dreamt of and the unexpected realities of life on the job. She carved chateaubriand in the first-class cabin and dined in front of the pyramids in Cairo, fended off passengers’ advances and found romance on layovers in London and Lisbon, and walked more than a million miles in high heels. She flew through the start of deregulation, an oil crisis, massive furloughs, and a labor strike. As the airline industry changed around her, Hood began to write—even drafting snatches of her first novel from the jumpseat. She reveals how the job empowered her, despite its roots in sexist standards. Packed with funny, moving, and shocking stories of life as a flight attendant, Fly Girl captures the nostalgia and magic of air travel at its height, and the thrill that remains with every takeoff.
Mother Noise opens with Cindy, twenty years into recovery after a heroin addiction, grappling with how to tell her nine-year-old son about her past. She wants him to learn this history from her, not anyone else; but she worries about the effect this truth may have on him. Told in essays and graphic narrative shorts, Mother Noise is a stunning memoir that delves deep into our responsibilities as parents while celebrating the moments of grace and generosity that mark a true friendship—in this case, her benefactor and champion through the years, David Sedaris. This is a powerful memoir about addiction, motherhood, and Cindy’s ongoing effort to reconcile the two. Are we required to share with our children the painful details of our past, or do we owe them protection from the harsh truth of who we were before? With dark humor and brutal, clear-eyed honesty, Mother Noise brilliantly captures and gorgeously renders our desire to look hopefully forward—while acknowledging the darkness of the past.

Primitives
by Cindy House
Half-Blown Rose
by Erich Krauss
by Leesa Cross-Smith
From New York Times bestselling author Erich Krauss comes Primitives, the story of two unlikely heroes thrust into a postapocalyptic mission to restore humanity. Thirty years after The Great Fatigue infected the globe—and the treatment regressed most of the human race to a primitive state—Seth Keller makes a gruesome discovery in his adoptive father’s makeshift lab. This revelation forces him to leave the safety of his desert home and the only other person left in the world…at least, as far as he knows. Three thousand miles away in the jungles of Costa Rica, Sarah Peoples has made her own discovery—just as horrific, and just as life-changing. It will take her far from the fledgling colony of New Haven, yet never out of reach of its ruthless authoritarian leader. On separate journeys a world apart, Seth and Sarah find themselves swept up in a deadly race to save humankind. Their fates will come crashing together in an epic struggle between good and evil, where the differences aren’t always clear. Among the grim realities of civilization’s demise, they discover that the remaining survivors may pose an even greater threat than the abominations they were taught to fear.
Vincent, having grown up as the privileged daughter of artists, has a lovely life in many ways. At forty-four, she enjoys strolling the streets of Paris and teaching at the modern art museum; she has a vibrant group of friends; and she’s even caught the eye of a young, charismatic man named Loup. But Vincent is also in Paris to escape a painful betrayal: her husband, Cillian, has published a bestselling book divulging secrets about their marriage and his own past, hinting that when he was a teenager, he may have had a child with a young woman back in Dublin—before he moved to California and never returned. Now estranged from her husband, Vincent has agreed to see Cillian again at their son’s wedding the following summer, but Loup introduces new complications. Soon they begin an intense affair, and somewhere between dinners made together, cigarettes smoked in the moonlight, hazy evenings in nightclubs, and long, starry walks along the Seine, Vincent feels herself loosening and blossoming. In a journey that is both transportive and intimate, Half-Blown Rose traverses Paris, art, travel, liminal spaces, and the messy complexities of relationships and romance, with excerpts from Cillian’s novel, playlists, and journal entries woven throughout. As Cillian does all he can to win her back, Vincent must decide what she wants . . . and who she will be.
Directed by Daniel Espinosa Written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless
Anti-heroes are common nowadays because they embody the tropes of chaotic neutral characters who are trying to contain themselves from being the monster they are. These characters play by their own rules and try their best to not hurt others in being the rebels they are. Venom is a recent popular character played to perfection by Tom Hardy. In this case of the symbiote we have two distinct personalities vying for control. With Dr. Morbius we just have a single personality dealing with the thirst for blood as the cure to his physical condition and the moral compass of not killing people for blood. The struggle is there in the plot, but the devil is always in the details. Details that this film left out.
Here comes the spoilers.
A young Michael meets his adoptive brother Milo who both suffer form a rare blood disease. Their adoptive father sends Michael to New York to medical school. Years later Michael is declining the Nobel prize for his invention of artificial blood. Michael begins to experiment with bat blood in search for a cure for his rare blood disease. Due to the legal ramifications of the experiments he gets funded to take a mercenary vessel into international waters to conduct his experiments. He injects himself with his experimental cure which turns him into a vampire. He ends up killing all of the mercenaries on board, and when he regains his senses he erases camera footage and escapes back to New York. The film goes on to show case him trying to ween himself off real blood
by using his artificial blood. Here is where they really need to consult with drug addicts to add in details of drug withdrawal. The film doesn't show him reverting back to his former physical condition. Loss of muscle and strength would make the struggle to cross the line and kill more intense. Yet the film doesn't go there and it doesn't give us the level of empathy needed to really connect to Morbius as a human character struggling with the cure and the morality of killing people. Then perhaps have him consider killing criminals which is the path the writer's took with Venom. Nope. Missed opportunity. Then the blatant foreshadow of his brother Milo (Matt Smith) eyeing the cure vials. You already know when he leaves his cane he took the cure. Next we have a rushed villain going on a killing spree and forced brother versus brother climatic fight that was not very emotionally driven at all. Such a shame and waste. Marvel script writers listen... your audiences are smart and patient enough to allow a villain to survive a film and continue to antagonize the hero(s). Craft and create a universe of villains who survive and continue to give our heroes their constant struggles. You don't always need a bow-tie ending. Let villains live to grow stronger, smarter, and more menacing. Your hero is only as great as the challenges they face. Morbius's greatest challenge is the inner addiction struggle in the form of his thirst for blood versus his do no harm as a doctor. That did not get played up to the levels that a audience needs to connect with his fight. The devil is in the details and Morbius lacks volumes. Marvel please give us villains that can live to fight another day (film). A universe of villains is far more interesting than a world of Avenger's. Thanks for reading Writing Movie ‘WRONGS’.

ARIF RAHIMOV Executive Director of Baku City Circuit This year’s FORMULA 1 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX 2022 could be the most spectacular race yet to be held on the streets of Baku as the new generation of F1 cars descend on the city circuit on the weekend of 10th-12th June, 2022.
FORMULA 1 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX 2022
Set to host F1 for the sixth time, the Grand Prix around the Azerbaijani capital has established itself as a fan favourite on the calendar thanks to its unpredictable racing and magnificent setting. The combination of record-breaking high-speed straights along the shoreline of the Caspian Sea in addition to tight and twisty corners around the historic ‘Castle Section’ offer an incredible challenge to the drivers. That has led to five different winners from its first five races and there could well be a sixth different driver on the top step of the podium in June. As the world is emerging from the Covid pandemic, this year’s event in Baku is welcoming fans back for the first time since 2019 and is attracting huge interest from both international visitors and local fans as Formula 1’s popularity continues to grow in the region. “Formula 1 races around the world are reporting record crowds as spectators flock to circuits as countries are opening up again after the pandemic,” says Arif Rahimov, Executive Director, Baku City Circuit. “It’s the same in Azerbaijan as we have seen huge interest for tickets for this year’s race in June. We can’t wait to welcome back crowds to what is set to be a sell-out.”
“Formula 1 fans know this race is unmissable as anything can happen”
The promoters of the FORMULA 1 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX 2022 believe the combination of the new regulations and the surge in popularity of Formula 1 thanks to the success of Netflix’s Drive to Survive series has led to mass public interest in this year’s event. Plus, they believe the new cars will result in an even more exciting and unpredictable race than usual – which is saying something for the hugely popular Baku race! “I can’t wait to see these new cars take to the streets of Baku in June,” added Rahimov. “Our track is already known as a venue where there is plenty of overtaking and I expect the long straights leading into Turn 1 and Turn 3 will see more action than we have ever had before. It’s wonderful we have had five different winners in five races. Formula 1 fans know this race is unmissable as anything can happen. It’s the most unpredictable race of the season which also makes it the most exciting!” Fans can expect another thrilling race as drivers will duel at speeds over 350km/h when the Baku City Circuit roars into life on 10th12th June for the FORMULA 1 AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX 2022.

The pandemic has hit the sporting world hard in the past two years, how important is it for Baku City Circuit to have fans return this year? “We missed the race in 2020 but did manage to host a Grand Prix last year without spectators. What we have experienced is that all events, particularly sporting ones, are proving to be very popular again. People have been locked in their homes and they are hungry to return to big events once more. Across the world, ticket companies are reporting sell-outs within days of going on-sale because people want experiences like Formula 1 again. Races are reporting record crowds as countries are opening up and returning to normal. In Baku we are taking into consideration all the necessary precautions so everyone is safe and we’re delighted to be welcoming fans back in June. We don’t foresee any problems with Covid for this year’s Grand Prix.”
In the uptake of tickets for this year’s race, what has been the percentage of national and international sales?
“Right now the split is 60/40 with 60 per cent of the sales from international fans. But we have found in previous years that the local market is quite ‘last minute’ from a sales perspective. In saying that, we have sold many more tickets domestically ahead of this year’s race than we did at the same stage before the 2019 event. It’s not a surprise that international travellers book earlier because they have to secure hotel accommodation and airline tickets and it’s great to see the return of tourists to Azerbaijan and this great city after a break of a couple of years. Plus, this year 76
MAY 2022
the Grand Prix will be in June so the climate will be perfect — warm and sunny! Overall, the trend is really good and we believe we could sell out prior to the race weekend.”
Why do you think the Azerbaijan Grand Prix has been one of the most popular races on the calendar in recent years?
“One of the reasons this circuit produces such exciting races is that it has the right balance between a slow and twisty section and long, flat-out straights. We also have gradient and a variety of different corners which makes it difficult for teams and drivers to find the right setup. It might explain why we have had five different winners in the five races we have hosted so far. And I think we’re in for another new winner this year! The Azerbaijan Grand Prix is always full of surprises, whether it was the famous clash between Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton in 2017 or both Red Bull drivers colliding a year later. Don’t forget we also had the drama of last season’s race when Max Verstappen retired with his puncture and we had a two-lap sprint to the finish. Formula 1 fans know this race is unmissable as anything could happen. It’s the most unpredictable race of the season which also makes it the most exciting!”
Do you think this new generation of F1 car will make this year’s race even more exciting?
Absolutely, I’ve no doubt this year’s Grand Prix will be an amazing spectacle. We have seen already in the opening rounds of the year that the DRS effect [the opening of the Drag Reduction System on the rear wing to improve top
speed] has been much stronger. When you consider the long run out of the final corner here, I think there will be plenty of overtaking into Turn 1 and also into Turn 3 after the second DRS zone. We have seen that the new regulations have enabled the cars to follow each other more closely and that has produced exciting racing. Our circuit has already proven it is possible to overtake so I can only imagine this year’s race will be even more fun.”
How important is the Baku City Circuit in showcasing the Azerbaijani capital and why is it such a special venue?
“Firstly, we are a street circuit that is truly in the centre of the city. Nearly all of the other new street tracks I can think of use areas of land based in the outskirts and require transportation to and from them. We’re located in the very heart of this beautiful capital, which showcases the shoreline of the Caspian Sea and also the historic areas of Baku, such as the Maiden Tower and the ‘Castle Section’ of the track. We have seen that hosting a Formula 1 race attracts massive international audiences, directly with the live sporting spectacle but also a secondary following thanks to the success of the Netflix ‘Drive to Survive’ series. Everyone in the world now knows where Baku is. It’s the race where drama unfolds. We monitor the impact that F1 has and the positive effect makes us all very proud.”
How has support for the sport grown since you first hosted a Grand Prix?
“The interest in Formula 1 from local fans has risen exponentially since our first race in 2016. Indeed, it is telling that while we are not planning any night-time concerts after the on-track action this year, this has had no impact on ticket sales. That proves there is a strong, core F1 fanbase here. I’d say that locally supporters split their allegiances pretty evenly between Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull.”
The increasing popularity of Formula 1 is leading to an increase in more venues hosting races, does that put pressure on your position to retain a Grand Prix in the future? “You can see there is more demand from cities to host a Grand Prix, but I think that actually puts more of a challenge on the teams than the promoters because the number of races is likely to rise as a result. We don’t feel any pressure because we have no competition with other races in our region. If you have three Grands Prix in one country, like the USA, or four countries in the Middle East vying for a place then that’s where you’ll more likely see pressure in hosting.”
What does the future hold for Baku and Formula 1?
“Well, we’ve had five races now and in 2022 this will be our sixth. To be honest, I don’t think we need to change a lot. We are happy with the layout of the circuit — it’s challenging, exciting and as we said, showcases the city of Baku really well. For the same reason we’re not interested in holding the race at night, as we want people to see the beautiful city we have in Azerbaijan. When the demand comes we could look at trying to increase capacity. It’s not something we will do this year, even though it looks as if we’re on course for a sell-out, as you have to remember there isn’t the infrastructure to suddenly build more grandstands as we’re surrounded by buildings in this historic city centre. We are happy to continue for years to come.” The Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2022 is set to be another spectacular battle on the streets of Baku. Can any of the previous winners manage to break the streak and become the first driver to win multiple races in Baku? Or will we see another new winner celebrate on the podium? There is only one way to find out.

LEO
You’ll feel the love this month, dear Aries, as Venus, the planet of romance and money, makes her way into your sign on May 2. These vibes are perfect for embracing the sweeter side of life, though there will certainly be a passionate and exciting energy to go along with this planetary placement. While matters of the heart will be on your mind, make sure you’re using this cosmic climate as an excuse to prioritize your needs while indulging in plenty of self-care. The universe wants you to feel adored and pampered, not only by the people who surround you but by yourself as well. Luck will be on your side beginning when auspicious Jupiter enters Aries on the tenth. Use this opportunity to check in with your personal goals, because you’re sure to see growth wherever you put your energy over the next several months. For this reason, it’s important that you gravitate only toward positive people, experiences, and behaviors that can help elevate you to new heights. Mars, your ruling planet, enters your sign on the evening of May 24, bringing a flurry of activity your way over the next several weeks. You should feel inspired, motivated, and passionate about your ambitions, making it an ideal time to start new projects and pursue your dreams relentlessly.
(April 20 - May 20)
TAURUS This will be an exciting month for you, dear Taurus, because the sun makes its way through your sign and brings attention and new activity your way. May 5 will feel particularly thrilling thanks to a cosmic alliance between the sun and revolutionary Uranus, which is bound to shake things up in your personal life. These vibes are ideal for going off-script, so don’t feel guilty if you opt for adventure over responsibility, if only for a day. The Scorpio full moon on the fifteenth brings intensity to your relationships, helping you connect with your partner or bestie in profound ways. However, these vibes could also put you in a private or secretive mood, causing you to pull away from your nearest and dearest. If you find yourself walking a solitary path during this lunar event, make sure you’re using the time to embrace self-love. Venus, your ruling planet, is cozied up to healing asteroid Chiron in the sector of your chart that rules the subconscious. This can act as a cosmic salve for whatever it is that’s ailing you internally. You’ll feel a shift when the sun enters Gemini on May 20, activating the sector of your chart that governs finances, your sense of security, and the material realms.
(May 21 - June 20)
GEMINI This month could be an intriguing one for you, dear Gemini, because the Aries sun shines a light in the sector of your chart that governs secrets, revealing information that was once hidden. Even the subtlest of clues could crack open a mystery you’ve been struggling with, so be sure to pull at any threads that pique your interest or intuition. These sentiments could feel particularly pronounced when the sun cozies up to unpredictable Uranus on May 5. It could lead to moments of clarity that strike like lightning. Mercury, your ruling planet, enters its retrograde motion while traveling through your sign on the tenth, which is sure to leave you feeling a touch out of sorts. Watch out for low energy levels, brain fog, miscommunication, errors, and clumsiness now as the universe plagues you with some cosmic funk. Luckily, this energy will also give you full permission to reflect, providing an opportunity to tie up any loose ends in your personal life.
(June 21 - July 22)
CANCER You and your friends can bring stability to one another this month, sweet Crab, because the Taurus sun activates the sector of your chart that governs community. If you’re unhappy in your current situation, now would be the time to shift your work in a new direction. MAY 2022
You’ll have cosmic support to build something solid in your professional life, dear Leo, because the Taurus sun activates your solar tenth house. This energy brings a lucrative and stabilizing energy to your career, helping you make steady headway toward your goals. However, this energy tends to move at a slower speed, so it will be important that you remain patient with each step. This is also a great time to work a little money magick around your income, so don’t hold back if you feel drawn to light a candle and make a wish. The vibe shifts significantly as Gemini season emerges on May 20, amplifying your position within your communities. Use this energy to build up your connections, but don’t be afraid to share the wealth by linking any friends or colleagues you believe might benefit from the introduction. You might also feel inspired to invest in your neighborhood, choosing to support small businesses rather than give your hard-earned dollars to faceless megacorporations. Meanwhile, action planet Mars enters fiery Aries on the twenty-fourth, providing you with the motivation needed to implement any major changes you’ve been building up to.
(August 23 - September)
VIRGO You can be a master manifester this month, dear Virgo, because the Taurus sun shines brightly in the sector of your chart that governs spirituality. These vibes can create a portal-like connection between you and the other side as the universe looks for ways to guide and support you. However, you’ll need to back up your dreams with any work required to achieve them. While the powers that be might send you the opportunities you ask for, you won’t see any actual payoff unless you can keep up with the responsibilities that inevitably come with every blessing. Unfortunately, this month won’t be without its tests, because your ruler Mercury heads retrograde on May 10. This planetary backspin could create issues in your professional life, plaguing your career path with new obstacles. Luckily, this energy can also present you with an opportunity to break patterns and learn from past mistakes, giving you a chance to overcome such hurdles. Survive this cosmic climate by staying centered, monitoring your stress levels, going early to the office, and proofreading every communication before sending it.
(September 23 - October)
LIBRA This month could put you in a transactional headspace, sweet Libra, because the Taurus sun activates your solar eighth house. This cosmic climate won’t have you in the mood to mince words or play games, bringing out an uncharacteristic directness that could throw your loved ones and colleagues for a loop. Don’t feel guilty about stepping into your personal power, negotiating, or advocating for yourself, especially if you feel as though others haven’t been taking you seriously of late. Just try not to let a desire to cut to the chase take away from your ability to engage in pleasantries, since not everyone will be in the same place as you. Your heart will have plenty of room for romance and connection beginning when Jupiter enters Aries and the sector of your chart that governs love on May 10. Whether you’re dating or in a stable partnership, this planetary placement brings some sparkle to your aura, helping to breathe new life into your connections. These vibes can also strengthen any chemistry that exists between you and that special someone, and your charm and charisma can reach new heights. However, you should be cautious about rushing into a commitment just because someone sweeps you off your feet, no matter how tempting it might be. A shift occurs as the sun makes its way into Gemini and the sector of your chart that governs spirituality on the twentieth.
(October 23 - November)
SCORPIO Get ready for a month full of love, luxury, and romance, dear Scorpio, because the Taurus sun activates the sector of your chart that governs matters of the heart. While this energy should bring more stability to your relationships, that doesn’t mean there won’t be a good dose of excitement to go along with it. Shocking gestures or declarations of love could find you when the sun cozies up to unpredictable Uranus while aspecting your passionate ruler Mars on May 5. Whether you’re in a committed relationship or looking for a hookup, you can bet that these steamy vibes will bring plenty of excitement to your day. Creative inspiration will find you when Mars forms a cosmic alliance to dreamy Neptune on the seventeenth. Lean into your artistic side even if you don’t consider yourself a master crafter. Playing in your imagination is sure to bring you healing while giving your confidence a little boost. These vibes are also perfect for taking action toward your dreams because your efforts can transform fantasy into reality. Just remember to stay grounded and clearheaded in the process. Emotional investment in any given situation could cloud your judgment if you’re not careful.
(November 22 - December)
SAGITTARIUS Though you’re known for your exuberance, sense of adventure, and fierceness, dear Sagittarius, you might want to slow things down this month. When the sun shines brightly in Taurus and your solar sixth house, the universe is pushing you to bring solid foundations to your daily routines, especially if you’ve been burning the candle at both ends. Use this cosmic climate as an opportunity to recommit to a more consistent schedule, which is sure to pay off in a boost to your efficiency, physical stamina, and mental well-being. You’ll feel invigorated by a renewed belief in yourself starting when your ruler Jupiter moves into fiery Aries on May 10. Just try not to abandon your grace in the process, and be aware of whether or not you’re maintaining a healthy ego.
(December 22 - January 19)
CAPRICORN It’s okay to build yourself up right now, dear Capricorn, because the Taurus moon activates your solar fifth house, asking your ego to come out and play. While you’ll certainly gain a new appreciation for your capabilities and talents, these vibes also encourage you to nurture your existing interests. Take some time to reconnect with a creative outlet right now, because the universe is blessing you with inspiration and a desire to express yourself. Embracing your artistic side can offer healing and personal transformation, especially when the sun forms a supportive connection to Pluto, currently camped out in your sign, on May 19. While you’ll certainly be in a more free-spirited mood throughout Taurus season, you’ll notice a shift in your priorities when the sun enters Gemini on the twentieth. This solar placement can motivate you to achieve greatness, pushing you to bring steady organization to your daily routines. These vibes are also ideal for mapping out your path forward so you can break down your big picture into small, manageable steps. Just try not to put too much pressure on yourself, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.
(January 20 - February 18)
AQUARIUS Your focus will be on domestic affairs this month, dear Aquarius, because the Taurus sun shines a light on your solar fourth house. These vibes are perfect for embracing luxury from the comfort of your own home, which could inspire more evenings in and perhaps a proper staycation. However, you might also feel drawn to freshening up your interior aesthetic, causing you to reach for a bucket of paint and some brushes. You’ll want to make sure to complete such projects before Mercury enters its retrograde on May 10, or you could end up regretting your decisions. Expansive Jupiter enters Aries and your sector of communication on the tenth, helping your voice grow in the coming months. For this reason, it will be particularly important that you avoid lies, gossip, or mean-spirited comments. Your words could reach further than you imagine. Maintaining a positive attitude can help you make the most of this cosmic climate, though you should also take some time out to reconnect with your spiritual or philosophical studies. You’ll notice a shift when the sun makes its way into chatty Gemini on May 20, putting you in a more social mood.
(February 19 - March 20)
PISCES You’ll learn more easily through hands-on experiences this month, dear Pisces, because the Taurus sun brings a rush of activity to the sector of your chart that governs learning, communication, and curiosity. These vibes can inspire you to get your hands dirty when it comes to expanding your knowledge, especially if you have a mentor to help illuminate any new mental journeys you choose to go on. However, this energy moves at its own pace, so you’ll want to make sure to be patient with your progress. Jupiter, the planet of luck and expansion, moves into Aries on May 10, helping you grow your wealth over the next several months. An increase to your prosperity is on the horizon, though you’ll need to be willing to take a few chances and say yes to opportunities. Be on the lookout for new work, career paths, or investments during this time, because the financial decisions you make right now are likely to pay off in big ways down the line. Mercury will be in the midst of its retrograde journey, so make sure you fully understand the terms of any new agreements you sign.
