Start saving now if you have children Latest figures reveal it can cost over 1.4 million AED to support a child through school and university

F

inancial solutions provider Old Mutual International is urging expat parents in the UAE to start saving early as latest figures show the cost of a child’s education could reach almost 1.5 million AED. The latest industry figures, based on sending a child to a UK or US curriculum school in the UAE followed by university in the United States, demonstrate the huge cost that most parents in the UAE will have to consider at some point. Old Mutual International, part of Old Mutual Wealth, is passionate about helping its clients plan for the future and believes early preparation is one of the keys to success. To help parents calculate the cost of sending their child to school in the UAE, Old Mutual International has launched a new online tool that will help families to plan for their aspirational future while taking in all the additional costs associated with education. Brendan Dolan, regional director, Middle East and Africa, for Old Mutual International, says: “Most parents want to provide the best for their children and would agree that funding their children’s education is a key financial priority and this is especially the case in the UAE where all expatriate parents need to pay for their children’s education. “It’s imperative parents in the UAE start saving as soon as they can so as not to rely solely on their income to fund the fees, which can be a risky strategy. The earlier parents start to save for education, the less money they will need to put aside as it will have more time to accumulate any investment growth. “The first step in planning appropriately is facing up to these costs and our online tool will help parents to do this. We would then advise they seek out professional help from a reputable financial adviser as early as possible.” Based on the latest industry figures from whichschooladviser.com, Old Mutual International estimates that sending a child to a UK or US curriculum school up to university age can cost 562,543 AED*

14

NOVEMBER 2016

(US$152,865) in school fees alone. Additional costs such as trips, bus services and uniforms, can cost as much as 15,684 AED** (US$4,262) every year from primary through to high school, this could bring the total cost of school education to approximately 766,437 AED ($208,271). When it comes to supporting a child through university the figures can become even more eye watering depending on the country the child studies in. If the child studies in the US, industry figures estimate the total cost for a four year course can add up to 681,124 AED (US$185,088)*** which includes university fees, room and board, transport and other living expenses. If the child studies in the UK, then costs may be slightly cheaper at approximately 323,700 AED ($87,962)**** for a three year course, which includes university fees, rent, transport and other living expenses. If the child studies at a top university in London then costs will rise significantly. With the cost of living rising all the time, by the time the child reaches university these costs are likely to be significantly higher. Brendan continued: “When considering the best ways to save for a child’s education there are many options available. Many parents may want the security of ringfencing these savings to ensure future educational needs are safeguarded – in such cases, a trust arrangement may be beneficial, and will ensure the child’s future is provided for in the event of something happening to one or both parents. “The various potential risks should also be taken into account, for example, what if one or both of the parents lose their jobs, have an accident, or dies? Or an unexpected situation may arise when there are competing priorities, such as looking after an elderly relative. Speaking with a financial adviser will help to ensure a robust financial plan is put in place.” The new online tool from Old Mutual International to help parents calculate the cost of sending their child to school in the UAE is available at www.oldmutualinternational. com/educationcalculator

Engines Roar on Sand and Water in “Red Bull Bar Bahr” on November 11

and and water motorsports are different in many ways, mainly the nature of the track consisting of solid ground in the first type and water in the second. In addition to the vehicles and the way they are driven on each track. Nevertheless, a unique event came to combine between the two types once again, in a relay race between competitors racing on Quad bikes and their teammates on Jet Ski: “Red Bull Bar Bahr” which returns to Kuwait for the second time on November 11, on Marina Beach in Salmiya. The race will be preceded by qualifying rounds on November 10 to select those who will participate in the finals. The level of thrill and adrenaline will double for speed and adventure lovers who will witness, starting from Friday, November 11th, at 2:30 PM, two consecutive races on the two Quad bikes and Jet Ski parallel tracks. The event is organized by Basel Salem Al-Sabah Motorsport Club and will be held under the sponsorship of Nissan Al-Babtain, Public Authority for Youth and Sports, Kawasaki, Pirelli, GoPro, Acqua Eva, Marina Mall, Al Anbaa Newspaper, Kuwait Times Newspaper, and Studentalk Magazine.

A relay Race involving 24 teams The 24 teams will be vying for “Red Bull Bar Bahr” title, with each team consisting of a Quad bike racer and a Jet Ski driver. The competitions kick off with Quad racing on sand, and upon reaching the end of the land track, the driver will have to hop out of his bike and run towards his teammate to hand him the key so the latter can begin his Jet Ski race to reach the finish line. The land racing track consists of a track designed to bring out the racers’ driving skills, and includes curves of medium and sharp edges, bumps, and sand barriers, driving thus the event to more exciting levels. Buoys, however, delimit the water track, and particular 016

maneuvers will be required for this kind of competition, including double or triple turnovers and similar details that add, in turn, more excitement to the race.

A committee of experts to supervise the race A committee of motorsports experts will oversee the smooth functions of the qualifying rounds and the finals; it includes motorsport stars and Red Bull athletes, UAE national Mohammad Al Blooshi, Kuwaiti national Mohammad Jaffar, and Kuwaiti Mohammad Burbayea who won the championship’s first season in 2014. The mission of the racing’s technical committee will focus on supervising “Red Bull Bar Bahr” competitions and the participants' commitment to the rules and regulations. In order to participate in the championship, each quad bike competitor must possess a driving license and be owner of his bike. Participants in the Jet Ski category should have a license from the Marine Sports Club of Kuwait. Red Bull Bar Bahr was held for the first in 2014. It was an extraordinary event in Kuwait and the Middle East when Quad bikes and Jet Ski motorsports disciplines were combined in a unique competition, which announced Mohammad Al Khulaifi (Quad) and Mohammad Burbayea (Jet Ski) as the winning team.

JUST BE YOURSELF

Sherif Abdel Wahab

H

aving a phone call with one of my friends from work, in the marketing department asking for help to be ready for my job’s interview. Marketing is one of my burning passions and getting this chance to shift my career from sales to marketing was a turning point in my life’s journey. Me: I’m really tensed, I have this interview I’m looking forward to. I have to be 100% ready for it. So what type of questions should I expect in such an interview? Any tips? Friend: Nothing much (and he paused for a bit)…. Just be yourself!!! That’s it!?! JUST BE YOURSELF!! I was expecting the most important questions and the tipping points of this job’s interview (which was his current job at that time). What a disappointment. But after going through the experience where I wasn’t able to express my real self (and of course not getting the job) and thinking deeply of his advice, I realized how valuable his words were. (But definitely not in that short notice). Who are you? How can you be yourself? And how to express your real capabilities in life’s biggest events? These non-googled questions that no one but you can answer. It is; in fact, a journey of meeting yourself, getting to know you, the background, the history and the motives in order to identify its current and future, never regret missing any of these opportunities, going through the dilemma of prioritization and live every moment to the maximum, you need to know how to answer the above questions accurately and authentically. This is the ultimate introduction for any self-development and leadership program. How and where should I start looking for myself and be a real authentic person? This series of articles will help you to develop a selfawareness habit. Yes it’s a habit that can be developed by practice and fade if you stopped. Change is the only constant in your life, so if you don’t cope with it, you will never be able to answer the above questions and to maximize the usage of your authentic-self and be present at your life’s biggest events whether personally, professionally or socially. So where to start practicing this new habit of selfawareness? I would be very unrealistic if I can answer this question in only one article, yet we can start with the first baby steps in establishing the foundation of this adventure. Even the most gifted artists don’t stay at home thinking in the empty box till they find the idea of a painting, a poetry or a book. They always move their b*%” Down and start working till they find how to represent their art. So the first thing to be sure of that you will never find what you are looking for unless you start working towards it.

1.Find one or more heroes and start following their steps: Who’s your hero, your role model and idol? You definitely have a childhood hero. And by time he/she keeps on changing to suit your ambition and pattern of thinking. It’s never too late to decide, but once you get him/ her, start following their steps of success. The why and the how not just the what (what you see from success and fame). Following the steps is a practical way to find self-awareness to see what you are able to do and what you aren’t. Before conducting my first self-development event, I was following 2 heroes in this field and felt like that’s it! These are the real ones who I can follow and tailor what suits my needs. But that was not the case. Six months later while preparing for the second event, I started following a third hero. It takes time! But I guarantee you that it is worth it and every time you feel like “Shit! I’ve lost my way again” it means nothing but you are moving to the next level of the game whether life, career, people or finances.

2.Be ready for the daily battle: I totally believe that everyone has something unique to offer which is the genius part in you (the one responsible for the ideas and the initiatives). But you have to put this on top of your mind every moment every day that you are a fighter in a daily battle between your genius and Resistance (the part responsible for the comfort zone and the survival behavior) that your above hero is winning it. Every time you postpone an activity, you avoid doing the extra mile or go for something new, be aware that the Resistance had won the fight. It’s very obvious after setting your ambitious new year’s resolutions and failing to follow up on them. Resistance is a monster that knows nothing but winning and crushing what’s in front of it. That’s why you would lose hundreds and thousands of ideas not being executed. Not because they were not that good, but because they couldn’t beat the resistance. The good news is that resistance can be beaten and with the support of your hero, you can have some great insights in the know how of beating it. You will find how they rarely mention their talents and gifts, however they keep on mentioning how great warriors they’ve become to earn your trust in following them. Kudos to everyone who beats this monster of resistance to bring us an inspiring masterpiece to tell to the world. And I will leave you thinking of this quote by Mark Twain till next time to go for some of the resistance tactics and how can we tackle them :) “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight. It’s the size of the fight in the dog.”

FACEBOOK RELEASES NEW SAFETY CENTER & BULLYING PREVENTION HUB

F

acebook is where people share some of the most important moments in life. That's why we build our services and tools to help people stay in control and feel safe being themselves. Today we are releasing our new Safety Center and Bullying Prevention Hub. You can visit the new site at: Facebook.com/safety. To make it easy for your readers, Facebook is sharing 5 safety tips (and new videos!) you need to know to take charge of your online well-being, and keep your Facebook profile secure.

1- Lock down your login: Login approvals (or two-step verification) are the best and easiest way to keep your Facebook account from getting hacked. When you log in from a new computer, phone, or web browser, you'll enter a code that you get on your phone to help make sure it's really you. How to Do It? To turn on login approvals, go to “More” and tap “Settings.” From there, select Security Settings, and check the box next to “Login Approvals.”

choose to share with everyone, just your friends or even a customized audience. When you create a customized audience, you can selectively share with, or hide something from, specific people. You also can change the audience for a post after you’ve shared it. To change the audience for something you've posted, tap the top right of the post to edit the post's privacy setting and select a new audience. Remember, when you post something on another person's profile, that person controls who can view the post. Additionally, anyone who gets tagged in a post may see it, along with their friends.

4-Check who can tag you in posts: When it comes to tagging, you can review the content you’re tagged in on Facebook. Tag review lets you approve or dismiss tags that your friends may add to your posts. When you turn this option on, a tag that someone else adds to your post will not appear until you approve it. We also offer timeline review. Timeline review lets you choose whether posts you're tagged in appear on your Timeline. When you turn this option on, posts you’re tagged in will not appear on your Timeline until you approve them. To turn on tag review or timeline review, tap the icon with three lines, and then tap Settings, then Account Settings and select Timeline and Tagging. From here you can manage everything from tags people add, to who can add and see things on your timeline – putting you in control of who you connect with and how you connect with them.

2-Let us know when you see something that 5-Go for a checkup: shouldn't be on Facebook: If you see something abusive or harmful that you think should not be on Facebook, you can report it to us by clicking the report link (typically an upside down arrow in the top right of a post). Our global team works 24 hours a day and 7 days a week to review things that you report and remove anything that violates our community standards. We don't include any information about the person who filed the report when we reach out to the person who posted it. If you've reported something, you have the option to check the status of your report from your Support Inbox. Keep in mind that only you can see your Support Inbox.

3- Understand who you're sharing with: Whenever you update your status, share photos or post anything on Facebook, you can select who sees what you share by using the Audience Selector tool. You can 022

Dr. Khalid

Hamad Al-Sebeih “Our career needs lots of patience”

PHOTOGRAPHER: Hamad Al-Ainati - @7mdphotography

When it comes to medical expertise, Dr. Khalid Hamad Al-Sebeih is head and shoulders above the rest. Specializing in the treatment of Ear, Nose & Throat and Head & Neck issues, Dr. Khalid’s skills have transformed the lives of patients across the globe. But what inspired the talented Kuwaiti to study medicine and what advice does he have for future, medical professionals?

First we would like to thank you for taking time out from your busy schedule. Can you please tell our readers a little about yourself?

have a smooth plain around them and it was not the case in this patient. As the patient was in his early 20s, I told his parents there would be no guarantee but I would take him to the operation theatre and try to excise the tumor. We went into the operation theatre as a team of Otolaryngology surgery and neurosurgery. We extracted the tumor using an approach called craniofacial section. We got rid of around 98% of the tumor and the big surprise was that it was not a malignant tumor. It was actually benign and the patient survived (and is still surviving). If we had left the tumor inside, it would have compressed his cranial cavity and he would have passed away. This is one of the patients I will never forget. Another case involved a patient who had burns all over his body. Because of this his trachea was affected and was intubated for three years. He had a pipe through his throat (tracheostomy). He could not talk and was fed through a tube in his abdomen. He was referred to me and I did bronchoscopy to look through his throat. Following a CT scan and MRI I told him the only option was to resect a part of the trachea and reanastomose the rest. It was very difficult and there was no guarantee, but it was the only option. The patient agreed and we did the operation for him. I remember it was very difficult because he’d had many earlier operations on his neck and it was full of fibrotic tissue. When we opened, we found that around half of the trachea (which is around 11cm) was stenosed and fibrotic and we had to take all of this out. The major challenge was to reanastomose the rest of the trachea which was a very difficult process, but eventually we stitched the trachea together and the patient, post-operatively, succeeded to be decannulated and get back to his life, his family and his career.

Hi, my name is Dr. Khalid Hhamad Al-Sebeih. I am a graduate from Kuwait Medical School. I then did my residency at McGill University, Montreal, Canada in the specialty of Otolaryngology (Head & Neck Surgery). I then did a double fellowship in Head & Neck and Facial Plastic Surgery. I am also an American Board certified in Otolaryngology. I joined the Faculty of Medicine, Kuwait University, in 2001 as an Assistant Professor and I am still there as an Associate Professor. Also, I previously worked at the Ministry of Health as a Consultant in Otolaryngology; I am also a board member in Kuwait Red Crescent society.

Where, when and how did you actually get interested in medicine to begin with? Well, I got interested in the field of medicine immediately after high school and with the recommendation of family; especially my mother who was very keen for me to get into medicine.

So you were in medical school and you decided on a surgical career. What pointed you towards head and neck surgery in particular?

I got particularly interested in ENT after my second year in medical school when I was studying the anatomy of head and neck and nose and ear and it interested me a lot. When I moved into ENT, I realized that the specialty was very interesting for many reasons. Firstly, there is no age limit to the patients; they could be from newborn to an elderly person. Secondly, it has around six specialties within it and the treatments could combine macroscopic surgery, endoscopic surgery and microscopic surgery. All of these made me really attached to this field.

Is there any particular person who influenced you the most, or who was your mentor or role model back in the early stages of your career?

Tell us about Otolaryngology and what ENT people actually treat?

We treat different types of disease including all those affecting the ear, nose, throat, head and neck and also facial surgery. It could be simple diseases such as tonsillitis and sinusitis to more serious diseases like laryngeal cancer, thyroid cancer and parotid tumors; and also different types of systemic diseases that can affect these areas like rheumatoid arthritis and spondylosis.

How many patients are treated by ENTs and Otolaryngologists each year? It is difficult to answer this as there are no such statistics in the private sector but I am sure there are some statistics in the public sector and I can only mention that it is quite a large number.

What are the most common ENT cases you come across in your daily practice? The common diseases vary from one country to another. The most common in Kuwait would be the allergic rhinitis which can affect the nose and throat. It can be seasonal or year-round and mainly affects adults. For pediatric age group, lift medicine recurrent tonsillitis, adenoid hypertrophy and otitis media with fusion of the ears, which is also known as fluid behind the ear drums.

A surgeon's career must be an adventurous and exciting one; would you like to share particularly memorable experiences from your career? Is there anything that stands out as a particular moment you’d want to capture for posterity? Yes there are plenty. One of them is when I got back from Canada after my fellowship. I faced lots of patients with difficult diseases and I remember a Syrian chap who had a tumor at the skull base, extending from the cranial cavity and into nasal cavity. He had come from Syria where they did a biopsy for him and it came out as a very bad and aggressive kind of tumor called Chondroid carcinoma. He came to Kuwait and was seen at the Cancer Control Center by a colleague of mine, who asked me if I had any better options for its cure. After examining the patient and checking his MRI and CT scan I was suspicious as most of these tumors infiltrate into the tissue and do not

NOVEMBER 2016

At CMC we are offering a high standard of medical services and care which can be compared to North America. The caliber of the doctors offering these services at CMC is also very high.

Yes, socially my mother was my mentor; she had a great influence on my career. She supported me during medical school and also during my course of training. From a professional point of view, there is an ENT doctor who was a role model for me at that time and who also did my tonsillectomy.

Now there is a visible trend towards non-invasive or minimally invasive medical treatments, has this trend also influenced the practice of head and neck surgery and has it changed over the years?

Yes, the field of Otolaryngology is evolving rapidly and there are many evolutions in the field. Endoscopic surgery is one of them and is a big evolution in the field of ENT. We are now doing most of our nasal surgeries endoscopically. There are also many non-invasive treatments for facial plastic surgery like different types of fillers, threads and implants that can be used as an alternative option.

What do you think has changed the least in head and neck surgery? There are a lot of changes that have happened in this field, particularly in the treatment of cancer in the head and neck. There are new options of radiation therapy and chemotherapy, robotic surgery was introduced in surgeries for different kinds of head and neck cancers; we see other sub-specialties such as otology where there are new techniques such as cochlear implant (a piece of device implanted for a completely deaf person to regain their hearing ability). There is constant research going on for other sub-specialties.

Please tell us why and when you established the Canadian Medical Center (CMC)?

When I started my private practice it was in a small private clinic and as the practice grew the number of employees increased. I needed a bigger space and so joined certain other specialties which were closely related to my own (dermatology and plastic surgery). So, the idea of establishing a medical center with these specialties came up, and in 2008 the Canadian Medical Center was established, combing these specialties. At the beginning it was very difficult to get the right people but eventually we succeeded and got through it.

What are the different specialties available at the CMC?

At CMC we have specialties including Otolaryngology, head and neck surgery, dermatology, plastic surgery, cardiology, dental and urology. The new addition will be gastroenterology and the hyperbaric oxygen therapy unit and we also have operation theatres and day surgery units. We also have a high standard lab, a radiology department and a pharmacy.

What sets CMC apart from others?

I cannot talk about others but I can certainly talk about the Canadian Medical Center. At CMC we are offering a high standard of medical services and care which can be compared to North America. The caliber of the doctors offering these services at CMC is also very high. This is what we would always maintain and we cannot afford to drop our standards.

What are your future plans for CMC?

In addition to the current specialties available at CMC we are planning to bring two more sub-specialties which are gastroenterology and pediatric. We also have plans to establish a hospital which will be a sister company of CMC.

How do you keep yourself updated with the latest developments and trends in your field? There are different ways to do that. First of all, every week I read a certain number of researches, papers and journals. I try to attend different courses, workshops and conferences every year (at least two to three courses each year). Further, I do my researches and papers myself to highlight my weaknesses and strengths. I then fix my weaknesses with help of such papers and researches.

Which of your many awards are you particularly proud of?

I am particularly proud of the award for research I did to test the inner ear which is called the VEMP (Vestibular Myogenic Evoked Potential). It got the second position in the entire province of Quebec, Canada.

Any particular words of wisdom that you would like to convey to current and/or future head and neck surgeons?

I would really advise young head and neck surgeons, or anyone in the medical field, to have patience. Our career needs lots of patience. You should be active and productive. Don't listen to, or be affected by, any negative impact from their colleagues, friends or society. Always have a target and consider all factors to reach this target. Always choose a career that you love. If you choose a wrong specialty, you will not be creative and will not enjoy it because this specialty is going to live with you more than your family. You will be attached to it for the rest of your life. Choose what you love rather than other factors such as easy life, more money and reward. Your career is part of your life and not vice-versa.

You have written in several distinguished publications. Which have been your favourites?

There are a lot of researches done by me and each one of them is special and close to me. I don't have any one favourite as they are all part of me.

We heard you also co-authored a book. Please tell us more about it. Yes, there have been several books where I have been asked to contribute in different chapters.

Any more books on the horizon?

Because of lack of time I have several researches that are still pending. Unfortunately, here in Kuwait, I have to do all of it myself.

I am particularly proud of the award for research I did to test the inner ear which is called the VEMP (Vestibular Myogenic Evoked Potential). It got the second position in the entire province of Quebec, Canada. What are your hobbies?

My hobbies include soccer, swimming, fishing and, my favourite one is hunting. Again, due to lack of time, I do not go hunting every year.

How do you maintain a work/home balance?

This is very difficult because at the beginning my work was a bit far from my family and home. I am now cutting down on my work and trying to spend more time with my family.

What is your favourite travel destination?

I really love to travel to North America; I lived there for more than six years and find myself attached to its society and culture.

What is your favourite food?

My favourite food is our Kuwaiti cuisine, especially the fish, and especially Zubaedi fish. We call it the Mutabbak Zubaedi 030

and Muhammar. This is my number one choice. I also enjoy all other kinds of cuisines such as Indian, steaks and Persian food.

Your message for CP readers: This message is for all Kuwaitis to work hard for your country, especially at this time. We need to be aligned and united. We have to be smart in dealing with the coming obstacles. We need to eliminate these challenges with our intelligence, love this land, and be one united hand towards all foreign attacks and policies threatening to dilute us.

Your message for our magazine: I would like to thank CP magazine for giving me this chance to talk about my specialty and the Canadian Medical Center and sharing everything about me. I wish all the success for your magazine and to be the best, not only in Kuwait, but the whole region. Thank you for the interview.

Korea in Kuwait? Gill Sherry

T

ucked away in a quiet corner of Kuwait City, the Inn & Go Hotel is slightly less obvious than its more prominent neighbours. But behind its modest exterior lies a labyrinth of secrets just waiting to be discovered. One such secret is the Arirang Restaurant. The combination of rich colours, sumptuous furniture and gilded furnishings provides a welcoming and relaxing ambience guaranteed to impress. Whether it’s an intimate table for two or a family celebration, Arirang offers a Korean dining experience you won’t forget in a hurry. The menu includes authentic Korean cuisine as well as a wide selection of traditional Asian options and popular Filipino dishes. The hotel’s General Manager, Michael Nielsen, invited us to try this hidden gem and to sample the delights of dinner with a difference. Korean food is known for its spicy flavour and this was evident in our selection of appetizers which were as colourful as they were fiery. Served cold, they included spinach with sesame, egg roll, flaming radish pickle and a crunchy beansprout salad. Last but not least, we braved the spicy pickled cabbage known as Baechu Kimchi – not for the faint hearted! 032

NOVEMBER 2016

The combination of textures, tastes and colours certainly whetted our appetites and we looked forward to the next course with eager anticipation. We were not disappointed. Our feast began with Sushi. The Salmon Makki (salmon roll), California Makki (crabmeat, avocado and cucumber roll) and Sunshine Makki (tuna, yellowtail, avocado, cucumber and fish egg) were all as good as any Sushi we’d tried elsewhere; the delicate combination of flavours a real treat. We followed this with a Sashimi Platter (raw salmon, tuna and yellowtail), a mouth watering delight for any lover of Japanese food. Eager to try more Korean delights, we were served with Ebi Furai (breaded shrimp served with a choice of garlicmayo or tonkatsu sauce). Light, crispy and non spicy, this was a firm favourite – particularly with the mayo and sauce combined! Next up was the Haemul PaJeon (seafood and vegetable pancake). Similar in texture to an omlette, this popular dish was both colourful and flavourful - and easier to enjoy with a knife and fork (which our server was more than happy to provide) than the stylish stainless steel chopsticks! We chose Japchae (mixed vegetables with clear noodles) as a side dish but this tasty and sizeable option would be an ideal main course for vegetarian diners. Other vegetarian options included Tofu Dolsot and Vegetable Dolsot.

The spice returned as we tucked into our Chicken Bokkum Tang (spicy chicken stew). Served with Kimchi Bokkum Bap (kimchi and rice) it was an eye-watering but delicious combination consisting of soft bite-size chicken sausage and beef cubes. Anxious to sample the Filipino cuisine, the executive chef, Rahul Jahed, recommended a seafood curry. By far the most eye-catching dish it consisted of squid, shrimp, mussels and crab delicately flavoured with coconut milk and peanut butter. Displayed to perfection this delightful dish is a must for all seafood lovers. The Filipino soup, a clear salmon based soup with crunchy green beans was also a salty treat. Returning to the taste of Korea, we sampled the Bulgogi; probably the best known of all Korean dishes. Translated as ‘Korean barbecue’ this tangy option with hints of garlic and sesame is best enjoyed with a crunchy salad and is a concept Michael and his team are keen to expand on; with plans to introduce a live barbecue some time next year. Despite the objections of our waistlines, Chef Rahul was still not done and insisted we try his Kimchi Pot Stew (we didn’t need much persuading!). This was a warm, hearty dish with soft tofu slabs and that now familiar Korean kick. We were also tempted with another beef dish, this time with steamed rice and vegetables. Mixed at the table with a fiery chili paste, the combination of textures was an absolute favourite. Throughout the evening the staff were courteous and attentive, happy to explain any aspect of the cuisine and to assist with menu choices. The ambience was relaxing and the background music non-intrusive; a truly unique dining experience. Our final treat of the evening was the Patbingsu dessert. This Korean specialty included vanilla ice-cream, crushed ice, condensed milk and mixed fruit. Topped with crispy cornflakes this cooling finale also included another surprisingly unexpected ingredient. However, we’re not going to divulge this intriguing secret so if you want to find out, you’ll have to order one for yourself!

The Arirang Restaurant is situated in the Inn & Go Kuwait Plaza Hotel, Fahed Al-Salen Street, Kuwait and is open from 12 noon to 10pm daily. To book a table call 22436686. You can also follow them on Instagram @innandgokuwait. 034

Don’t Ask!

I

I guess we’re all, as emotional beings, sensitive about certain things. Some of us, for example, take offence when asked to disclose our age for no other reason than to satisfy the enquirer’s curiosity. It’s tempting to say ‘mind your own business’ but more often than not, the magic number is reluctantly confirmed; the questioner oblivious to the discourtesy involved. ‘Why don’t you have children?’ is another question guaranteed to cause offence. Why people think they have the right to ask this question is beyond me. Firstly, it’s no-one’s business, other than the couple themselves, why they don’t have kids. Secondly, it can cause great distress if the reason they don’t have children is a medical one, or indeed something over which they have no control. Regardless of our own opinions, the decision to remain child free is being made by more and more women (and men) every year. The reasons for this are endless as well as personal to those concerned. Perhaps they carry a life-threatening gene which they have no desire to pass to their offspring; perhaps they fear the world in which we live is no place to bring up a child; or maybe they have been advised, for medical reasons, not to risk pregnancy. Of course, there are some couples out there who have simply decided that they don’t want to be parents. This may shock some of us and go against everything we believe in but at the end of the day, it has absolutely nothing to do with us. Their freedom of choice allows them to make such a decision without interference, criticism or judgment. They should not be questioned about their choice and certainly shouldn’t have to justify it. Imagine being asked to explain why you married your chosen spouse, why you became a fashion

036

NOVEMBER 2016

designer rather than a doctor, or how old you are. Your response would be understandably indignant. Asking someone why they don’t have kids is equally offensive, unfairly intrusive and an invitation for an umbrageous reaction. Admittedly, some may not object to being asked, but others certainly will and it’s those who deserve a little courtesy and respect. For women with successful careers, it’s often assumed they have chosen not to have children because they have put their career first. However, this is not necessarily the case. One such lady suffered the private trauma of three miscarriages but was still labelled as ‘selfish’ and ‘power-crazed’ by judgmental onlookers. Another lost her child to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (cot death) and another tried for four years to conceive before her husband lost patience and divorced her. I wonder how these women feel when they’re asked why they don’t have kids. Each and every one of us has the fundamental right to choose how we live our lives. Those choices, as well as those lives, should not be judged by others who do not share the same thoughts and aspirations. Far too many of us take it for granted that just because women can have children, they should have children. But what’s good for one person is not necessarily good for another and the fact that we are all so different is what makes this world such a wonderful place. So next time you’re tempted to ask a newly married couple when they expect the pitter-patter of tiny feet; or why a successful entrepreneur is sitting behind a desk instead of standing behind a pram, think twice. Sometimes, things aren’t as obvious as they seem.

Please introduce yourselves to our readers.

I am Yezenia Navarro, a Mexican living in Qatar since 2011. I am a wife and mother of three beautiful boys. My name is Nuha. I’m 23, born to Iraqi parents. I grew up in Malaysia, New Zealand and Qatar and I’m currently between New Zealand and Qatar.

Tell us about your education:

Yezenia: I studied Communications and Drama in Mexico. I’m a professional actress and presenter. I started modelling at 7 years old. I never stop! I believe that studying is the best tool we have to succeed. Nuha: I never knew what I wanted to do, so I went to beauty school after high school instead of going to university and studying something like science! After graduating from Tajmeel Beauty Academy in Qatar, I 040

NOVEMBER 2016

decided to study business as I planned to establish my own someday. I graduated in Business Marketing from College of the North Atlantic in Qatar. And, after all those years thinking I didn’t want to study science, I am currently studying exactly that at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. How ironic!

Now, what do you do?

Yezenia: Actress, Model and TV Presenter. I’m the founder and chairwoman of Queens Without Scars. I’m an individual expert of the 13th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice held in Qatar. I’m a Goodwill Ambassador of Egypt and I was one of the speakers at the Narrative Summit held in Cairo and many other events and congresses for VAW (violence against women), empowering women, empowering youth and kids. My passion for fashion and beauty mixed with my passion for helping the needy work perfectly together. My goal is to inspire and to help.

Nuha: My year is split between New Zealand and Qatar. When I am in New Zealand I am focused on my studies, my health and fitness and occasionally modelling. When I am in Qatar, I am constantly on the go with Yezenia! We start our day at the gym (we love doing Crossfit!), getting ready for events, photo-shoots or fashion shows - depending what’s on that day!

of domestic violence and that’s the reason I started QWS. I’ve travelled the world to help people in need, to speak out against this epidemic of society called violence, and to empower. I use the pageants as a platform to share news of Queens Without Scars and to invite beauty queens to join my initiative. Why queens? Firstly, because I believe that many of the victims of violence are looking for someone to inspire and motivate them. They are looking for warriors; people to stand up for them. My ambassadors are great human beings and they have a lot of confidence and courage. Many of them are quite famous so this makes it easier for us to raise awareness and to get support from the community.

How did you guys meet and how would you describe your friendship?

Yezenia: We met at a fashion Show. We often worked together. I invited Nuha to one of the events for Queens Without Scars; I didn’t think she would go but she did. Since that moment we have been very close to each other. Nuha and I are really good friends; sisters. We have different religion and are from different countries (she is from Iraq and I’m from Mexico) so we have a different mother tongue (Nuha Arabic and me Spanish). I also speak Portuguese but we communicate in English. Regardless of cultural differences, we are very similar. We love fashion, makeup and crossfit; we work together as models for photoshoots and fashion shows; and we are passionate to travel. We also enjoy trying different sports and creating different concepts for our followers.

Yazenia, you also hold some very important international titles - can you tell us more about them? Yezenia: Being married and being a mom is not an obstacle to make your dreams come true. You have to believe it, live it and work hard for it. These are my titles: -Mrs. Belle C Femme 2006 -San Diego Latin Beauty 2009 -Beauty of Mexico 2011 1st RU -Mrs. Mexico 2014 -Mrs. Universe 2014 1st RU -Mrs. UN World Ambassador 2015 -Mrs. Mexico Universal 2016/17 I’m going to compete for the international title of Mrs. Universal in Namibia, Africa in 2017

Nuha: I don’t actually remember when and how we met but it was definitely at a fashion show; a casting, rehearsal or something like that. The reason I don’t remember is because I had always known of her and admired her from afar. She was on the cover of almost every magazine before I had even started modelling. It might seem stalker-ish but I knew we would be great friends before we met! I love the type of friendship we have. Although we do a lot of the same things together, we are very different and we constantly learn from each other. Usually girls get very catty and competitive and compare themselves to one another too much, but we like to embrace that we are different and that’s why we complement one another.

What’s it like working as a duo?

Yezenia: It's great fun! We are so different and so similar at the same time. We learn from one another every day. We are sincere and say things as they are. We motivate each other to be better.

How did the idea of the collaboration come up?

Nuha: The idea to collaborate really just came up one day on set. Yezenia is the one who voiced it but I was thinking it. We had been doing quite a few shoots together and we enjoyed it and we noticed that people started approaching us as ‘Yezzi and Nuha’ as a duo. Sometimes we receive only one invite for an event, as they know we will come together.

Yaezenia, tell us about your modelling and acting career?

Yezenia: I started modelling at 7 years old and acting at 12 years old in plays. During university, I received a scholarship for the best acting school in Mexico. I worked as an actress in theatre, soap operas, musicals, short films, Mexican, American, Italian, German and Indian cinema and commercials, working in Mexico, USA and Qatar.

For me the best part of working together is that we don’t just hang out as friends and enjoy quality time together, but we are also productive.

Photo by Angel: Malari @scenestealer Makeup by: Andrea Espinosa @aemakeapp Hair by: MJ Smith @mjs_passion

Yezenia: We are social influencers in Qatar and we frequent most events such as openings, product launches, media events, fashion shows and more; and always together. We always appeared together in magazines or blogs and we used to do everything together. That’s why we decided that it was the moment to start!

~Nuha

What is Queens Without Scars and how did the idea come up? Yezenia: Queens Without Scars is an NGO (non-governmental organization) that seeks to address all forms of discrimination, violence against women, girls and domestic violence in public and private sectors, including trafficking and sexual exploitation. We have ambassadors in more than 14 countries including beauty queens, models and celebrities. I always support NGOs and charities in my country but I never thought of creating an organization myself until I moved to the Middle East. The statistics of violence against women show that 1 in 3 women worldwide have suffered some form of violence in their lives. It could be your mother, your sister, your daughter, your friend or yourself. I am part of the statistics. I am a survivor

How would you both describe your styles?

Yezenia: Elegant, classy, fresh, etc. We love trying new styles and different trends.

On stage for @yousef_aljasmi at @MBFWD 2015

Nuha: I have a hard time answering that question all the time. I don’t know what my style is really. It’s a mix of a lot of things. For instance, at uni you will most probably find me in sneakers, leggings and loose sweaters. Going to an event I would usually go all out - I love my designer heels and purses and usually complete the look with an elegant timeless, fitted type of dress. Check out my instagram to know what I mean – it’s just all over the place!

What are your morning beauty routines like? Any products you can’t live without?

Yezenia: I can't live without my sun protection, my moisturizers and my argan oil shampoo and conditioner. Also my mask before bed!

I started modelling at 7 years old and acting at 12 years old in plays. During university, I received a scholarship for the best acting school in Mexico. ~Yezenia

Nuha: My morning beauty routine involves a nice cup of coffee! And since in New Zealand we are 10 hours ahead of Doha, I like to sit and check my social media and see what everyone was up to while I was asleep. It gives me anxiety not knowing sometimes!

Who are your favourite designers?

Yezenia: Valentino, Louboutin, Ellie Saab, Ramy Kadi, Carolina Herrera, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci.

Nuha: For me the best part of working together is that we don’t just hang out as friends and enjoy quality time together, but we are also productive. Whether we are on set or at the gym, I enjoy being productive and doing that with your best friend is priceless.

What have been your best moments so far?

Yezenia: Travelling together to Santorini and Thailand. Spending time with our families. Going together to our medical appointments or baking together. And going to Crossfit together is always amazing! Nuha: It’s hard to say what has been our best moment so far - we’ve had many! The first thing that comes to mind is Santorini, Greece last year. Yezzi juggled everything from her work, her kids (her entire life!) so she could be present for my wedding.

Your blog has become very popular and you are considered one of the coolest bloggers in town! Where would you like your career as bloggers to go? Yezenia: Fashion, beauty, lifestyle, travel. I’d love to have more collaborations in different countries with different brands, designers, makeup artists and hairstylists, hotels and airlines. We love adventure and we also love sharing them with our followers to inspire. Nuha: We definitely don’t consider ourselves as bloggers, at least not as traditional bloggers. We don’t have a blogging platform, we just love to share what we do, what we eat, what products we use and what we wear, with our followers. Through that, we hope to inspire young girls to take care of their bodies, their mind, chase their dreams and most importantly, surround themselves with people who bring out the best in them.

Nuha: I don’t have one favourite. However, there is always one that stands out and for me that would be Dolce & Gabbana. I am absolutely crushing over the royal looks; the accessories and embellishments on the garments are simply so beautiful. I would love to shoot a look with some of the D&G pieces.

What song or album do you have on repeat right now?

Yezenia: La Bomba by King Africa. We are crazy about Enrique Iglesias and we love Latin Beets. Nuha: We actually have a favourite song together and we came to love it while we were in Greece. It’s a Latin song called La Bomba by King Africa. I’ve always been a fan of Latin pop, even before meeting Yezzi.

What advice would you give to an up-and-coming blogger? Yezenia: Believe in yourself and be genuine; don’t try to be someone else. Don’t pretend, have fun, enjoy every moment and try to give to your followers something good each time; something to help them in any way.

Nuha: The number one tip for any type of up-and-coming public influencer is to be true to yourself.

Best food/cuisine according to you?

Yezenia: Mexican, Italian and Japanese - but we always try to eat healthy and organic food. Nuha: My absolute favourite dish has to be penne pasta with white sauce and mushrooms!

What are you favourite clothing brands?

Yezenia: Zara, Mango, BEBE. For not very expensive shoes I like Aldo, Steve Madden and sometimes Zara. But we love new brands and local designers. Nuha: Zara! Especially for everyday casual wear.

Who takes the longest to get ready when you are going to work or going out? Yezenia: Yezenia!!!! I take hours to do my makeup and deciding what I will wear.

Nuha: Yezzi definitely, without a doubt, takes the longest to get ready! She is unbelievable and gets distracted so easily!

Your message for CP magazine:

Yezenia: Thank you very much for this opportunity. I hope people enjoy our adventures as much as we do. Nuha: We would love to say thank you so much for choosing to talk with us, we’ve really enjoyed doing this Q&A and we hope your readers enjoy it as much as we did.

We definitely don’t consider ourselves as bloggers, at least not as traditional bloggers. ~Nuha

Proper Ingredients Make PROPER SLIDERS

W

ith so many restaurants in Kuwait, it’s hard to know where to start when those hunger pangs hit. That’s why the team at Proper Sliders went back to the basics and came up with a simple formula to produce a Proper Slider. Their meat is ground on site every day, ensuring a fresh, tender and juicy beef patty. Their vegetables are sourced from trustworthy, reliable suppliers; and their potato buns are delivered fresh each day from a local bakery. This combination of quality ingredients ensures a winning formula for a Proper Slider. Keen to sample the delights of the Proper Slider menu, we paid a visit to their Shaab restaurant and were treated to a finger-licking meal we were all keen to repeat. The compact diner was funky and light with ample space 046

NOVEMBER 2016

for both indoor and outdoor dining; rich green shrubbery provided a natural privacy screen from the road and bright red parasols ensured shelter from the sun. The lively music included everything from Elvis to The Beatles - a foottapping winner! Whilst the premises and ambience were clearly impressive, it was the Sliders we were most interested in. Keen to sample as many as possible, we opted for the Proper Combo: 7 Sliders (1 The Proper Slider, 1 Proper Bacon Slider, 1 Proper Spicy Slider, 1 Proper Mushroom Slider, 1 Proper Crispy Chicken Slider, 1 Proper Spicy Chicken Slider and 1 Proper Grilled Chicken Slider), 4 Sides (1 Fries, 1 Proper Fries, 1 Proper Chili Fries and 1 Proper Onion Rings) and 3 soft drinks – a bargain at KD 10.00.

Unwilling to miss out on other delicious options, we also ordered Proper Coleslaw, Proper Bacon Cheese Fries, Proper Cheese Fries and Proper Caesar Salad. Well, how could we resist? Deciding on a favourite was not an easy task, each of us choosing a different mouth-watering Slider. The Proper Spicy Slider was just that – the chopped jalapenos adding just the right amount of fire; the Proper Mushroom Slider left us licking our lips and our fingers with equal delight; and the Proper Crispy Chicken Slider was as tasty as it was crispy. No Slider is complete without fries and the Proper Chili Fries were the perfect choice. Melted cheese, homemade chili beef, chopped jalapenos and onions topped with a satisfying helping of delicious Proper mustard. Add a spoonful of coleslaw and you’re in Proper Slider heaven! For the slightly more health-conscious diners – or those wanting an alternative side – the Proper Caesar Salad is the ideal choice. Fresh, crisp lettuce with crunchy croutons, seasoned chicken and tangy Caesar sauce proved just as much a winner as the Sliders themselves. Well, almost….. Adding a giant Proper Onion Ring to an already overflowing plate proved a tricky balancing act which prompted us to highlight our one and only complaint – the plates were just not big enough!! Surprisingly, despite our hefty order, we still had room for dessert. Only one dessert graces the Proper Slider menu – Chubby Balls! Biscuit balls immersed in a blend of special Proper sauce is the only dessert you’ll need and it brought a smile to the face of every one of us as we dived into this delectable dish. But be warned, this melt-in-the-mouth biscuit treat (in a creamy sauce with a drizzle of chocolate) is bigger than you think!

Watch this space for reviews of other Kuwait London Company Brands: The Kitchen, Junkyard and Humble Burgers.

You will find Proper Sliders in Shaab Al-Bahri, Block 8 (22391002), Mahboula, Block 2, Street 201 (22391903/4) and Ardhiya, Block 2, Sara Complex (22399600) with a choice of dine-in, take-out or delivery. You can also follow them on Instagram @propersliders and be assured of a true Kuwait based concept as opposed to a typical, familiar franchise.

YUMMY FOR THEIR LITTLE TUMMY:

Cool Moms Make SUSHI! Sherifa Alasousi

Y

ou probably already know that fish is an excellent food, especially for growing bodies. Fish contains a whole host of good things, including omega-3 fatty acids, as well as lots of protein, vitamin D and other great nutrients. This means it’s excellent for a child’s brain and eye development. Some people believe that eating tuna is no problem, while others think that children shouldn’t be introduced to tuna until they are much older. Most experts, however, believe that some tuna in moderation is fine for young children, as long as some precautions are heeded when introducing the new food. When choosing when to let your baby eat tuna, keep in mind any food allergies that might be in your family. Food allergies can be genetic, so make sure that you don’t have anyone in the family allergic to fish before you think about giving it to your child. If there are no allergies in your family, you can consider giving tuna to your child at the six-month mark, or when he starts eating more solid foods. Though sushi might taste great for adults, it’s a different story for little children. Make sure that the tuna is cooked thoroughly to avoid any risk of bacteria. Make sure there are no bones in the tuna, as this can lead to a choking hazard. Canned tuna is a way to help avoid the problems that might come from undercooked tuna. Remember that no matter what type of tuna it is, it likely has some level of methylmercury, which can be harmful in large quantities. Babies might be particularly susceptible to the problem, so make sure to limit their intake to twice a week, at most; and always opt for the canned albacore as it is likely to have less methylmercury. My recipe this month is easy and fun. It depends on your baby's likes and age – it’s suitable for babies over one year old who are already introduced to solid foods. What I love about this is that you can let your baby feed herself/himself and experience the fun as they grow into an independent toddler.

This is what you will need: l l l l l l

One can of white tuna White or brown toast Carrots Cucumbers Organic mayonnaise Avocado

Let's start: lMake sure the canned tuna is cooked and not raw. Place the quantity you need in a bowl and add some of the organic mayonnaise, until it's creamy. lPlace the toast on a sheet and cut the sides - use a dough roller to flatten the toast until you get a thin bread- like result. lNow it's simple - paste your toast with the creamy tuna and add your vegetables. lRoll the toast to form sushi rolls, then cut them to a size suitable for your child.

I tried the same recipe with turkey, cheese and sundried tomatoes. It tasted so good and my baby loved it! It's a wonderful afternoon snack for all ages so be creative and have fun with it! Bon appetite!

AUTUMN MEANS ALLERGIES

T

he autumn weather normally brings a drop in temperature and dormant allergens make their appearance. If you know what itchy, red, swollen and watery eyes feel like, then ocular (eye) allergies are well known to you. The good news is, that besides causing these unpleasant symptoms, eye allergies cause little or no threat to your vision. However, potentially fatal eye infections mimic symptoms similar to eye allergies. This must not be taken lightly. If it feels out of the ordinary to you, consult your doctor. Eye allergies occur when your body overreacts to something. The immune system makes antibodies which causes the eyes to release histamine and other substances. This causes itchy, red, tearing eyes and nasal allergies. Allergies can be seasonal or perennial. Seasonal allergies occur from spring until autumn and triggers are usually in the air, i.e. pollen, grass, spores and molds. Perennial allergies normally occur throughout the year. Major triggers are dust mites, pets, perfumes, cosmetics and air pollution. If your allergy trigger is not known to you, then you should get an allergy test. This will provide you with some answers as to what your allergic triggers are. Allergies never completely disappear. However, here are some tips which can help you to control them: lFirstly, try to limit your exposure to the possible allergens.

050

NOVEMBER 2016

Again, it is worth knowing your allergic trigger. The trick is to limit your exposure to these allergens in any way possible. lWearing big wrap around sunglasses will eliminate outdoor airborne allergens. lDo not rub your eyes when they itch. This releases more histamine which makes the allergy symptoms worse. lArtificial tears are effective in rinsing out airborne allergens that have settled in the eyes. It also tends to soothe the eyes. lContact lenses attract and accumulate airborne allergens. Consider switching to glasses during allergy season. If you are a constant contact lens wearer, then use a daily disposable contact lens, instead of your usual weekly or monthly contact lenses. lWhen in dusty or chemical related environments, wear the required protective eyewear. Safety glasses assist to alleviate allergic symptoms by protecting the eyes from dust particles and chemical reactions. lWhen swimming, always try to wear swimming goggles. Chlorine is a major irritant to the eyes. At International Optique, we have a wide range of prescription and nonprescription swimming goggles for children and adults. lConsult your doctor about eye drops specifically formulated for eye allergies. You may need oral medication for nasal allergies which are commonly associated with ocular allergies.

Alaa Busedra is a Canadian photographer with big ideas. Keen to pursue a career in commercial and fashion photography, Alaa is focusing on developing her own personal style as well as the self-confidence of her subjects.

Tell us a bit about yourself – where do you live, where did you grow up?

What cameras and lighting gear did you start with and what are you currently using?

My name is Alaa Busedra, I am 20 years old and I live in Canada.

What are you currently studying and where?

I’m currently in my graduate year at Algonquin College studying Photography in Ottawa, ON, Canada.

When did you first get into photography? How did you begin your photography practice?

I started my photography journey in 2012 when my mother gifted me with a DSL camera. I started practicing by taking photographs daily of everything from still life, to family, to street photography.

Which photographers do you particularly admire? Richard Avedon and Lucia Giacaniis. I really admire both and find them very inspiring.

Can you describe your style?

When viewing some of my photos you can really tell how I love colour. I enjoy photographing bright colourful pictures. 052

NOVEMBER 2016

I want the viewers to get a positive vibe from my work and leave a good image in their heads

The first camera I started using was a Canon Rebel T3 and as a start natural light was my source. Now, since I study photography, my school provides us with all the gear we need and I mostly prefer the Canon 5D Mark III. For lighting, Profotos are the best.

Where do you do most of your work?

Most of my work is done at my office at home that’s where I find myself the most comfortable and able to edit and be focused.

Is there a certain subject matter that you gravitate towards?

I really enjoy commercial and fashion photography and I am willing to pursue them once I graduate.

What project have you worked on recently that you're proud of?

I’ve done a project about self confidence which I am really proud of because of how I was able make what I visualized in my head appear on photos with a strong message.

Instagram is one of my favourite social media apps because it gives me the ability to view all my work in one place without having to catalogue or separate my work. Also, lots of people use Instagram so it is a good way to network with people and it is easy for them to view.

What do you look for in your subjects?

I look for self confidence because I feel that’s what brings out the personality of the subject and makes them who they are; that really adds up to the photograph or the scene that they are in.

What's the best thing someone has said to you about your work?

When someone sees my work and says ‘yes that photo is you and your style’ that really makes me happy. I love that people can actually tell it is my photograph by my style.

What is your editing process like?

Editing is a pretty big thing when you are a photographer. It can be a little time consuming but when you see the final product it is worth it.

NOVEMBER 2016

What type of lighting techniques do you favour? I like both natural and flash but I mostly like working in the studio where I get to replicate sunlight or make it cloudy without actually going out and waiting for the weather to be perfect.

What do you see yourself doing in the next five years? Any grand plans?

What do you want your viewers to take away from your work?

I’d like to see myself owning a studio, being a fashion photographer, and traveling around the world doing photography.

How do you use Instagram as an outlet for photography? How has it helped?

I appreciate and thank CP magazine for their interest in me and giving me this opportunity to talk about myself and share my work experience with you.

I want the viewers to get a positive vibe from my work and leave a good image in their heads.

RED BULL GIVES YOU WINGS

We’ve all heard of the advertising slogan claiming Red Bull Gives You Wings, but we’ve never really believed it to be true. Or have we? Following the conclusion of this year’s Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, 25 men and 11 women have proved that our favourite energy drink, really does give you wings! Gill Sherry

T

he Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series Finals took place in Dubai on Friday 28th October 2016. Dubai Marina may not have been the most obvious location choice - I don’t remember ever seeing any cliffs in this particular Emirate - but the organizers at Red Bull were not going to let a minor detail like that stop them. Having already held successful dives from other cliff substitutes (Copenhagen Opera House and Saint Nicolas Tower in La Rochelle, France, to name just two) there was no reason why the elegant restaurant tower, Pier 7, couldn’t host this respected World Series Final. In fact, it didn’t just host it, it smashed it! As you would expect, the event attracted quite a crowd. Cliff diving has a reputation for its excitement and drama and crowds gathered early to secure a suitable vantage point from which to watch this amazing acrobatic show. People were craning from balconies, boats and bridges to get a view of this first-ever night time diving competition. The remainder, like me, were crammed onto the Red Bull marina concourse, soaking up the atmosphere and marveling at the setting which was nothing short of spectacular. I must admit, other than to catch a glimpse of the extreme sport on TV, I’d never really watched cliff diving. For me, this was a perfect opportunity to see what all the fuss was about whilst enjoying the dramatic backdrop and adrenalin-filled atmosphere. Other spectators obviously took the sport more seriously and had followed their favourite divers through the previous eight stages, kicking off in Texas, USA and ending, penultimately, in Shirahama, Japan. The slight delay to proceedings only 056

fuelled the atmosphere so by the time the first competitive diver took to the platform, the impatient crowd was buzzing. Giant screens were in place for those with a less than perfect view, so no-one would miss the action. Although aware of the complex dives the competitors were capable of, nothing had prepared me for the sight of them plunging into the water from 28 metres up. It was an awesome sight and one I couldn’t get enough of, despite the intense heat and everincreasing crowds. I began to wish I was dining in one of the stylish Pier 7 restaurants but I suspect the fee for such a privilege was at a premium on this particular evening. Certainly, those lucky enough to be watching the competition from one of the Pier 7 establishments would not forget this particular dining experience in a hurry.

Canada’s Lysanne Richard coming in second with 1030 points and Cesilie Carlton (USA) taking third with 780 points.

I’m embarrassed to admit that before 28th October, I hadn’t even heard of these inspiring men and women. Now, after witnessing their breathtaking athleticism and outstanding, worldclass dives, I shall be following them a little more closely. Thank you Red Bull for opening my eyes to this amazing sport and giving us all a Cliff Diving World Series finale to remember. It seems Red Bull really does give you wings.

Over 12,000 people gathered at the marina to watch the drama unfold. For those interested in the technical details, five international judges score each diver on take-off, position in the air and entry in the water. The competitors must display their skill and versatility by executing take-offs from basic dive positions – front, back, inward, reverse and handstand. Although well experienced in the art of cliff diving (these were the World Finals after all) some athletes were clearly disturbed by the night-time conditions. Others though, relished the change, rose to the challenge and took the opportunity to shine; producing some of the best dives of their career. In particular, Andy Jones (USA) delivered sensational dives and emerged as winner on the night, taking top spot on the podium. Britain’s Gary Jones came in second, followed by Jonathan Paredes from Mexico. In the ladies competition, Australia took first and second with Rhiannan Iffland and Helena Merten respectively. Mexico’s Ady Jimenez came in third. However, this was just one of nine World Final competitions and it’s the total score from all nine rounds that counts (a little like the Formula 1 Grand Prix Championship). The 2016 Red Bull cliff diving calendar began on 4th June in Texas before travelling to Denmark, Portugal, France, Italy, UK, Bosnia/Herzegovina and Japan, finally reaching its climax in the UAE on 28th October. The overall winner and the 2016 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series Champion was Gary Hunt, with a staggering 1350 points. Jonathan Paredes finished second overall with 1030 points and third place went to the winner of the Dubai stage, Andy Jones, with 910 points. Rhiannan Iffland was crowned women’s champion with 1290 points (quite an achievement for the surprising wild-card entrant) with

4. the MUST stay…Just 2 blocks away from Independence Hall is the Best Western Independence Park Hotel. It boasts 17-foot high ceilings and a lovely glass atrium. Did I mention it is walking distance to almost everything? http://www.independenceparkhotel.com 5. the MUST do off the beaten path…Comprising half a city block is a series of multi-layered walls forming a labyrinth of immersive artwork by mosaic artist Isaiah Zagar. The non-profit exhibit has a low cost admission price and it’s best to book tickets in advance as they sell out frequently. https://www.phillymagicgardens.org

The line usually moves quickly and once you exit you have Independence Hall right at your feet. https://www.nps.gov/inde/learn/historyculture/storieslibertybell.htm 2. the MUST eat…Hey you’re in Philly - gotta have a Philly Cheesesteak sandwich! While Pat’s King of Steak in the south side may be the original, across the street is Geno’s and both are open 24/7. I cannot decide which I like more so can only recommend to try them both. Get in line early though - wait times can be up to half an hour. http://patskingofsteaks.com and http://www. genosteaks.com 3. the MUST shop…Ask anyone in Philadelphia and without hesitation the reply is ‘Reading Terminal Market’. BRUSSELS THE CITY GUIDE

Brussels is the bilingual capital that delights in contradiction. Its streets are signed in French and Dutch (to everyone’s confusion); its most iconic landmark is a tiny statue of a boy urinating (the Mannekin Pis), which symbolizes not just its people’s attitude to authority but their enduring deadpan humor; and it simultaneously boasts some of the grandest and ugliest architecture in Europe. This is the city that inspired one of the finest architects of the Art Nouveau movement, Victor Horta, as well as an endless series of "Brussels’s Ugliest Buildings" blogs. Dig a little deeper, though, and you’ll find not contradictions but context; a rich history that stretches back long before World War II devastated much of the capital, prompting rampant postwar redevelopment.

THINGS TO DO Comme Chez Soi

Manneken Pis

This is definitely the top attraction in Brussels. In among the narrow lanes of the historic city center at 31 Rue de l'Etuve (lievevrouwbroersstraat) stands the statue of a little boy taking a pee. The statue is only 61cm high and is made of bronze, it is a fountain statue. The thing that makes it so special, apart from being quite unusual is the amount of stories surrounding the much loved figure.

NOVEMBER 2016

Please introduce yourself to our readers. Hello, my name is Julie Fautley and I am 50+ years old. My husband Barry and I have been married for 30 years and have 3 grown up children; Jemma, Michael and Jake. My children all live in the south west of England. I am British; I was born in Surrey, near Hampton Court Palace. How long have you lived in Kuwait? I have been in Kuwait for 18 months. My husband and I arrived from Australia, where I helped run a ‘Dry season weekly market’ in Darwin. What prompted you to become involved with the British Ladies Society Kuwait? When I arrived here I didn’t know anyone and found the BLS via a Google search. I thought it would be a great place to meet and find new friends. What will your role as President entail? I will become the face of the British Ladies Society. I will support my new committee and together, we will endeavor to make the Society an enjoyable place to meet and make new friends. We have events and activities planned for the 2016/2017 season, as well as coffee mornings at different venues and members’ homes in Kuwait. I will also be travelling around Kuwait to promote the Society. Is the Society only open to British members? No. The Society is open to all nationalities. A British lady by birth, marriage or who has British parents can become a full member. Ladies of other nationalities can become associate members. As an associate member you can enjoy the same benefits as a full member. How can people get in touch or join the BLS? Ladies can apply via the website by completing our online application form (www.theblskuwait.com) or email the BLS (info@theblskuwait.com). Explain how the Society benefits its members. As a member you become part of a very multicultural community and make friends from all over the globe; friends that can last a lifetime even if they move to the other side of the world. We have a discount program which includes everything from coffee shops to dentists! We are very grateful to all our sponsors for their support. We have trips to historical places of interest around Kuwait, which are a great way for newcomers to settle into life in Kuwait. We also have an active mother and toddler group that meets on a Sunday morning. This is invaluable for mothers with young children. Our walking group also meets every week so we can lose those pounds we’ve put on thanks to the supersized restaurant portions in Kuwait! Tell us a little about the charities you will be raising money for this year. We raise funds for 2 charities each year, one here in Kuwait and one in the UK, voted for by our members. The Kuwait charity, The Foundation of Hope, serves

to raise funds to enhance the lives of both adults and children who are mentally challenged or have mental disabilities. With our support, The Foundation of Hope team can assist in providing a better quality of life for those who might otherwise live in the shadows. Our chosen UK charity is Alzheimer’s Society. At the Alzheimer's Society, they believe passionately that life doesn't end when dementia begins. They are there for anyone affected by dementia, and do everything they can to keep people with dementia connected to their lives and the people who matter most. Dementia can happen to anyone and there's currently no cure. There are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK and the number is set to rise to 1 million by 2021. What do you enjoy most about your involvement with the BLS? Forming lifelong friendships and meeting new people from all walks of life. Other than the BLS, what else do you enjoy about living in Kuwait? I like the sunshine, but not too much as I like to be able to go for a walk. I like watching the lightning as it reminds me of our time in Darwin, Australia. Do you have a favourite restaurant here in Kuwait? I love the garlic shrimp in The Cheesecake Factory. What about a favourite store? I like the Coach handbag store in the Avenues. I also like Ikea and could spend hours in there! I like loads of different shops for different reasons but if I had to choose a favourite, it would be Ikea. Have you travelled elsewhere in the GCC? I lived in Abu Dhabi and loved it. The Grand Mosque is amazing and so beautiful. I have been to Qatar, but only for a night, so can’t really comment other than to say the hotel was great. I was in Bahrain in April and loved it. We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary there. What advice would you give to other ex-pats who are new to Kuwait? Join a society and make friends. It makes the world a much smaller place and life less stressful. Be open to new adventures. Driving can be scary at first, but you do get used to it. Tell us about one thing on your ‘bucket list’. I want to go and spend time in the Ice hotel in Jakkasjarvi, Sweden. Or maybe learn to dive. Your message for the team at CP magazine and our readers: Thank you to the team at CP magazine for inviting me to be part of your magazine and thank you to the readers for reading this article. Please feel free to contact the British Ladies Society Kuwait for any further information – and come along to our Winter Bazaar at BSK on Friday 18th November!

TOP THINGS TO DO IN

MADRID With the holidays approaching, there’s no better time to start planning for your winter getaway. Madrid is one of the most celebrated and beautiful places in the world and a magnet for elite international tourism. Home to the iconic El Corte Inglés department store in Castellana, a draw for shopping lovers as one of the world’s largest stores, there are many amazing activities for the discerning traveller within close proximity. Here are some of Madrid’s top sights to catch between a shopping spree.

1: Santiago Bernabéu Stadium Just a nine-minute walk from El Corte Inglés, Madrid’s main football stadium is home to the city's most popular team: Real Madrid. Opened in 1947, the stadium is enormous and has undergone multiple renovations over the years, now seating up to 81,044 people. There is no better way to experience an integral part of the Spanish culture than to cheer on Real Madrid at a game. 2: Puerta de Alcalá A quick 10-munite drive from El Corte Inglés, the Puerta de Alcalá, meaning the “Citadel Gate” and derived from the Arabic word al-qal'a, is a neo-classical monumental city gate, and regarded as the first modern, post-roman, triumphal arch in Europe. It was built between 1769 and 1778, using granite and stone from Colmenar and makes a wonderful backdrop for a memorable picture. 3: El Prado Art Museum Not falling short on culture, Madrid’s Prado Art Museum is one of the world’s first museums to hold a royal collection of art from the 15th to the 17th centuries, including the works of Velazquez’s ‘Las Meninas’ and El Greco’s ‘The Annunciation’. Art lovers can also head to the neighbouring Reina Sofía and Thyssen-Bornemisza finishing the Golden Triangle of Art to admire the works of many world-renowned abstract and surrealist artists, all only a short ride from the famous El Corte Inglés. 4: Plaza de Cibeles square Adjacent to Paseo del Prado, marvel at marble sculptures at the city’s most famous plaza. Known for its stunning architecture, the fountain features the Roman goddess Cybele who represents Earth, agriculture and fertility, and was adopted by the city's football team. After a winning match for Real Madrid, this is the spot to celebrate the victory. 5: El Corte Inglés The seven-storey department store is the hotspot for visiting fashion mavens. International visitors receive a 10% reward discount card year round and can ask to have their shopping delivered to their hotel or home country, along with assistance with their tax refund. Celebrating its 75th anniversary, this shopping mall is in the heart of Madrid, and a stone’s throw away from many local attractions. The store features over 8,000 Spanish and international brands and is the ideal answer to the most discerning shopper with its comprehensive collection of designers. Anyone on a shopping break should not miss stepping into the El Corte Ingles’ concept stores Serrano 52MAN and Serrano 47WOMAN. The impressive men-dedicated store Serrano 52MAN incorporates the latest trends in prestigious men's fashion across seven floors dedicated to showcasing different styles and garments for every occasion. The recently opened women-focused store, Serrano 47WOMAN, spanning 11,000 square metres offers everything a woman would need in fashion, accessories, and in beauty, perfumery and cosmetics. Let the imagination run wild and find inspiration at every corner of this storied city. El Corte Inglés is an iconic landmark of fashion that marks itself as a destination in its own right.

TOP PICKS FOR

A LIFE IN PARTS by Bryan Cranston

THE COLOR OF LOVE by Ty Mitchell

Bartending at The Spot in Los Angeles was a temporary gig for starving artist Daisy. Whether that meant catching her big break or burning the place down, she was determined to color the world wıth her paintings. Arson seemed like the less likely of the two when she learned that a frequent patron, Mike, was an agent with top-shelf connections in the art world. Steppıng out of her comfort zone, she agrees to meet with him at a concert. On the night of the concert, Daisy greets Mike with an unexpected surprise. He knew that she was bringing someone, but he never expected this. What was more surprising was the implications after the confusion was cleared.

A poignant, intimate, funny, inspiring memoir—both a coming-ofage story and a meditation on creativity, devotion, and craft—from Bryan Cranston, beloved and acclaimed star of one of history’s most successful TV shows, Breaking Bad. Bryan Cranston landed his first role at seven, when his father cast him in a United Way commercial. Acting was clearly the boy’s destiny, until one day his father disappeared. AMERICAN ULYSSES: A LIFE OF ULYSSES S. GRANT by Ronald C. White Jr.

In his time, Ulysses S. Grant was routinely grouped with George Washington and Abraham Lincoln in the “Trinity of Great American Leaders.” But the battlefield commander-turned-commander-inchief fell out of favor in the twentieth century. In American Ulysses, Ronald C. White argues that we need to once more revise our estimates of him in the twenty-first. Based on seven years of research with primary documents some of them never examined by previous Grant scholars this is destined to become the Grant biography of our time. White, a biographer exceptionally skilled at writing momentous history from the inside out, shows Grant to be a generous, curious, introspective man and leader—a willing delegator with a natural gift for managing the rampaging egos of his fellow officers. His wife, Julia Dent Grant, long marginalized in the historic record, emerges in her own right as a spirited and influential partner.

HIS BLOODY PROJECT by Graeme Macrae Burnet

A brutal triple murder in a remote northwestern crofting community in 1869 leads to the arrest of a young man by the name of Roderick Macrae. There’s no question that Macrae is guilty, but the police and courts must uncover what drove him to murder the local village constable. And who were the other two victims? Ultimately, Macrae’s fate hinges on one key question: is he insane?

THE GERMAN GIRL PRE-SUASION: A REVOLUTIONARY WAY TO INFLUENCE AND PERSUADE by Robert B. Cialdini

The author of the legendary bestseller Influence, social psychologist Robert Cialdini shines a light on effective persuasion and reveals that the secret doesn’t lie in the message itself, but in the key moment before that message is delivered. What separates effective communicators from truly successful persuaders? Using the same combination of rigorous scientific research and accessibility that made his Influence an iconic bestseller, Robert Cialdini explains how to capitalize on the essential window of time before you deliver an important message. This “privileged moment for change” prepares people to be receptive to a message before they experience it. Optimal persuasion is achieved only through optimal pre-suasion. In other words, to change “minds” a pre-suader must also change “states of mind.”

by Armando Lucas Correa

A stunningly ambitious and beautiful debut novel, perfect for fans of Sarah’s Key and All the Light We Cannot See, the story of a twelveyear-old girl’s harrowing experience fleeing Nazi-occupied Germany with her family and best friend, only to discover that the overseas asylum they had been promised is an illusion. In 1939 before everything changed, Hannah Rosenthal lived a charmed life. Her family moved in Berlin’s highest social circles, admired by friends and neighbors. Eleven-year-old Hannah was often taken by her mother for an afternoon treat at the tea room of the beautiful Adlon Hotel, both dressed in their finest clothes. She spent her afternoons at the park with her best friend Leo Martin. But, in an instant, that sunlit world vanished.

PRESS Ford’s Warriors in Pink Dedicated to Fuelling the Spirit of Breast Cancer Survivors La Plus Belle Salon Opens Its Boulevard Branch, The Biggest of Its Kind ‫المال وبهبهاني تحتفل‬ ُ ‫ شركة‬in the Middle East

‫حفل مثير وبحضور‬ ‫في‬ ٍ ‫السفير األمريكي لدى‬ ‫الكويت‬

Radiating with positivity, breast cancer survivors selected by Ford Middle East and North Africa for this year’s edition of Warriors in Pink have come together to reflect on their battles with the disease and to share their heartfelt stories. By continuously asking, “What more can we do?” Ford’s long-standing programme Warriors in Pink continues to support, inspire and empower patients, survivors and co-survivors of the disease year after year. The objective is to drive conversation on breast cancer awareness as a leading health concern, to spread a message of hope to current patients and to encourage women and men to get regular check-ups. Following the remarkable success of previous years’ activities, Ford recently organised several photo sessions for survivors – “Models of Courage” – across the Middle East and North Africa region, in the hope that these courageous ladies’ actions can inspire current and future patients in their own battles. The 2016 collection of the “Warriors in Pink” clothing and accessories line, which includes a wide range of items from scarves to shirts, was also introduced during these photo sessions. Kuwait “Everyone said I was so strong and coped very well emotionally. I'm not sure I always felt that strong inside when I was at my weakest with the chemotherapy treatment”, says Model of Courage Sheila Lilley. She continues: “But my view was that, as long as my children and husband were healthy, I could cope emotionally and physically. My main concern was making sure I survived as I was not ready to say goodbye to my beautiful children.” In a similar context, Model of Courage Jane Chacko advises women: “It is very important to take the necessary precautions. I went for a baseline mammogram when I was 40 years old, but then I never went back. Had I gone for regular mammograms, I would not have been able to prevent cancer, but my cancer would have been detected earlier, which would have made my treatment easier. In fact, if my cancer had been diagnosed in time, I could have avoided going through chemotherapy. So go for a mammogram!” Chacko explains: “If a woman is diagnosed with cancer, it is not necessarily the end of the world. Cancer can be treated and many women are breast cancer survivors and are leading normal lives. The important thing is to accept the situation – it is what it is - don’t think about what you should have done or what could have been, rather just stay positive and move on. \” The 2016 edition of Warriors in Pink was a relaxing event held at the Baraka Wellness Centre at the Costa Del Sol hotel, Kuwait. Two breast cancer survivors– Sheila and Jane Chacko –modelled the new apparel and accessories collection, and shared their powerful message of hope. Sue Nigoghossian, general manager, Communications, Ford Middle East and North Africa, said: “We are thrilled to welcome these courageous and inspiring women to the Models of Courage programme, and we are proud to have them represent Warriors in Pink in the region. This campaign has flourished into a long-standing programme in the Middle East and North Africa, and we continue to be committed to raising greater awareness of breast cancer and the importance of early detection as it can help save lives.” “Through the Warriors in Pink campaign, we aim to further raise awareness in the UAE and across the MENA region, to encourage, inspire and empower breast cancer patients, as well as their families.” Ford Warriors in Pink hopes to raise the needed awareness about this topic and looks forward to valuable engagement in the fight against breast cancer.

Fitness First, one of the world’s leading health and fitness companies, and a part of Landmark Group recently hosted “Pink Power” an informative fun event held to support breast cancer awareness. Themed as Party in Pink, the event began with an educational session conducted by renowned medical oncologist Dr. Susovana Sujit Nair, from Kuwait Cancer Control Center followed by a fun group exercise marathon which included body pump, Zumba step, body attack, body combat, Zumba and yoga all conducted by professional trainers. The venue came to life in pink and boomed with everyone’s favorite Zumba tracks and choreography. The Fitness First Chief Operating Officer, George Flooks, while making the announcement, reiterated the company’s commitment in spearheading health and fitness awareness in the region. He also underscored the importance of exercising as a way of reducing the risk of diseases such as breast cancer and many other health related diseases. “Since 2014, Fitness First has been driving breast cancer awareness by promoting compelling messages about fitness for good health in a fun way. Our objective as a leading fitness provider is to rally women in the Kuwait to recognize the importance of keeping fit as one way of minimizing the risks of breast cancer." said George. He further added, “Our Ladies-Only clubs are a testimony of our efforts towards encouraging women to chase their fitness goals in a wellkitted out environment. Ladies can comfortably and freely exercise through their fitness goals in these exclusive clubs regularly. For now, we would like to invite all ladies to try out our Fitness First clubs during weekends, all of this month.” “I am delighted to be a part of the “Pink Power” initiative”, said Dr. Susovana Sujit Nair, medical oncologist from Kuwait Cancer Control Center. Approximately 1 in 9 women have an estimated life time risk for developing breast cancer. Everyone can join the fight by spreading knowledge about the disease, encouraging their loved ones to get screened. The earlier breast cancer is diagnosed, the better the treatment options available and the higher the survival rate. Breast cancer is a curable disease, agonizing and painful months of chemotherapy treatment can be avoided by only doing yearly check-ups and undergoing a life- saving mammography in women.” “Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Kuwait and is the second biggest killer of women in the country. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to detect the disease in its early stages. If discovered and treated at an early stage, 98 per cent of sufferers will survive. It is really inspiring to see the dedication of Fitness First and the support they receive from the Kuwait residents to spread the message on breast cancer awareness.” All attendees were encouraged to adopt a healthy lifestyle, which include regular exercise and physical activity. The ‘Pink Power event was fun filled with vigor and vibrancy and open to everyone including non-Fitness First members.

Gilda, the watch with the strong iconic identity from Swiss watchmakers Eberhard & Co., a perfect combination of elegance and style, was chosen by Elisa, an artist with a unique style and an unconventional, never dull look, for her new video It is her third single, after the great success of “No Hero” and “Love Me Forever”, from the album “On”, the singer-songwriter’s ninth album which marks her return to writing songs in English. The album is different from the singer’s previous works as it has moved closer to electronic music and pop. The track list includes a duet with British singer Jack Savoretti and a trio with Italians Emma Marrone and Giuliano Sangiorgi (the singer from Negramaro). “Elisa” (also known as Elisa Toffoli) was born in Trieste in 1977 and is an all-round artiste: songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist and record producer. During her career, she has been involved in projects as video director, stage actress, photographer and writer. In a career spanning 19 years, her albums have reached the top ten in the Italian and international sales charts 9 times, and her singles have achieved this 16 times. In Italy she has received all the major prizes and awards on the music scene: from the Sanremo Festival to the Targa Tenco, from two Premio Lunezia awards to 14 Italian, Wind & Music Awards, from Festivalbar to Nastro d'argento, and a Premio Regia Televisiva television award. Her many other accolades include an MTV Europe Music Award and some beautiful pieces that have been part of the soundtracks of famous films. The video was filmed in the magical Salento region, more precisely in the enchanting castle of Mesagne, near Brindisi. It stars an elegantly dressed Elisa who wanders through the rooms of the castle, with Gilda on her wrist. After the initial scenes, marked by the precious hands of the watch, memories begin to emerge in her mind, with a long flashback of her as a child grappling with a difficult father and starved of affection. Thus begins the story of a painful, complicated relationship.

Reebok’s #PerfectNever campaign, a powerful and encouraging global movement that asks women around the world to champion life’s imperfections every day, was launched in Dubai on Friday. The unique gathering brought together 48 inspirational women from different backgrounds across the region for an exceptional luncheon at the spectacular Dubai Opera House, for the first event of its kind to take place in the new facility. The guests, who were all role models in their own right, took part in a wide ranging discussion about what it means to be ‘perfect’ and shared personal stories, opinions and ideas on ‘perfection’ and what truly makes them human. The intimate occasion, designed to encourage real discussion and debate on what truly makes women strong in the face of considerable societal expectation, was attended by influential figures from across the globe including Bahraini Ironman Myrna Saliba, Emirati businesswoman Mthayel El Ali, international yoga star Tara Stiles and Sheikha Asma Al Thani of the Qatar Olympic Committee, who alongside her work is also planning an all-female expedition to the North Pole in 2017. Amongst the remarkable figures who told her story of challenge and triumph was Myrna Saliba who at the age of 60, after being diagnosed with osteoporosis in 2000, defied all the odds, turning her life around to become the first Arab and GCC national to ever qualify for the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii. After sharing her personal interpretation of #PerfectNever at the event Myrna said: “I don’t think perfection exists and this luncheon has reaffirmed my view. Like many women here today, I always have a desire to do better, to improve and for me that is what perfection means. It is very simply doing everything you can to be the very best you can be. It’s a message that needs to be shared as young ladies today face an expectation of being perfect. A goal no one will ever achieve. This is the type of event that can motivate and make a real difference to the lives of many.”

Start looking more at the big picture for your long-term goals as Mars enters Aquarius on November 8. An opportunity for more money could come with the Full Moon on November 14. It may seem radical or unrelated to anything else in your life, but maybe you need a new hobby, one that could pay for itself. It would boost self-esteem, too. The November 29 New Moon encourages mischief and some social daredevil behavior that may or may not work out well. You're not inclined to caution now, but you can keep a lid on the more outrageous impulses.

The Sun trines Neptune on November 1, opening people's hearts and making some of them hypersensitive. Tread lightly. The November 14 Full Moon lights up your career and public image. Even if you feel like staying home now, people will find you, so you might as well participate fully whatever you're doing. On the job, be visible and let your work shine. The November 29 New Moon promises great fun and games without going over the edge into recklessness or extravagance. Take your time and choose amusements. What seems great at first could leave a sour aftertaste. Be discerning.

A question at work goes your way when the Moon sextiles Jupiter on November 2. Gently speak up about an opportunity that advances or expands your position. The November 14 Full Moon favors home finances and personal budget. Discover something useful that's been overlooked but now solves a small money mystery. Make an effortless change (switch brands or stores?) that saves you money daily. The November 29 New Moon is all yours and it's ablaze with cleverness and good sense. Any new idea will turn out to be proper and successful. Social interactions will all benefit you. Now go be your energetic self.

(December 22 - January 19)

On November 2, when the Moon conjoins Venus, you might start looking forward to a great romantic weekend, but remember that sometimes plans fall through. The November 14 Full Moon is all yours to make whatever changes speak to your heart. Don't be too rigid in your thinking or planning, though, because you might want to make still more changes later. Be forgiving as well. The November 29 New Moon could usher in a period of confusion when you want to help but don't quite know how. Be patient with yourself, and don't look for easy answers that would be misunderstood anyway.

On November 2, a romantic offer may seem wacky at first, but true affection could be there. Be kind. The November 14 Full Moon encourages a greater sense of fun and adventure. Let a friend or a friend's child - suggest a new place to go and something new to see and do. You don't have to do it again, and you may like it. Family members may all turn to you during the November 29 New Moon, or they may just all show up at your house, with good intentions, of course. Relax. You know how to reserve your personal space.

November 4 is productive, fun, and maybe thrilling at times as Venus trines Uranus. The November 14 Full Moon thinks that you need more fun in your life. You deserve it, too. Go for something comfortable, yummy, and soothing to the inner child. It does not have to be a lullaby. Look forward to a vibrant private life with the November 29 New Moon. Despite the improved quiet time and solitude, more people may join your circle of trusted intimates, not all at the same time, of course. And you may not want to be alone as much as you originally thought.

Love could find you on November 2, when Mercury sextiles Pluto and the Moon conjoins Venus. Curl up with a good book or great movie during the November 14 Full Moon. Pamper yourself and don't feel lonely. People are only a text away, after all. Or invite someone over, if you must. The November 29 New Moon brings fantastic romantic possibilities. They won't be languid dreams, either. It's the time to find real, practical, solid romance with someone smart and never boring. (This includes the possible reigniting of a current or old relationship.) You can speak first, but let yourself be pursued.

Be more charming and feel more attractive when the Moon conjoins Venus on November 3. Romance is a distinct possibility. The November 14 Full Moon suggests that you hold the key to someone else's problem, but they need to figure that out. Be available and generous with your time, if you can, but you have responsibilities. too. Don't instantly volunteer. It's party time at home and in the neighborhood at the November 29 New Moon. You don't need to host an affair. Social skills alone should attract enough friends to make a festive spontaneous gathering that won't want to end.

People are more agreeable on November 7, when the Moon in Aquarius sextiles Saturn and then sextiles Uranus. The November 14 Full Moon could trigger a change of heart about a family member or something at home. You can always talk about it first and then act. The knee-jerk reaction may be tempting but probably isn't wise. With the November 29 New Moon, some new people may appear to keep you busier than ever. Be respectful of everyone's time (including yours) and engage as much or as little as you please. You'll have nice ways to prevent your time being eaten up.

November 1 may be very emotional when the Sun makes a trine with Neptune. Be conscious of any vast dreams or unreasonable expectations. Social tensions should soften with the November 14 Full Moon. Relax, be more comfortable with new acquaintances, and surround yourself with a few more favorite things. Order what you like off the menu (respecting budget, of course) and forget appearances. The November 29 New Moon encourages you to put yourself first. Eat good food, rest, be active, and have a health routine and schedule. Now jump into family and social affairs. People will tell you how great you look. Seriously.

You could feel hyper when the Moon conjoins Mars on November 6. Be more physically active, or expend the energy preparing for the work week. The November 14 Full Moon shines directly on your world of love and romance. A friend could express the desire to be more intimate, or you might suddenly notice someone great who has been nearby all along. The November 29 New Moon ushers in a lunar month of good financial prospects and a sensible slowing down of any previous binge-spending spells. You know when to act on a good thing and when to wait.

The Sun trines Neptune on November 1, making people around you more emotional. Give them room, if you can. Get away, if you can't. The November 14 Full Moon is busier than you may want. Friends and neighbors could drop in or call more often, leaving you with fewer places to hide. Get them talking to one another, and slip into the background. The November 29 New Moon highlights career and public presence. Be ambitious, proactive, and vocal. You have observations and comments that other people need to hear. You can accomplish things that no one else can now. SPONSORED LINKS
