LOVE FOREVER AFTER Eman Alawadh

W

hen I was younger, I remember sitting in my bedroom with my best friend on a rainy day and making a list together. The list was basically a checklist for the type of partner we hoped to have in our lives. We kept the lists in a box under my bed and promised ourselves to look back on the list once we met someone significant. The next time I saw that list was on the day I was packing to move out to my husband’s house. I had forgotten we had ever made it and giggled to myself remembering that rainy afternoon when we thought we could plan and predict everything that would make us happy. Plot twist: my husband didn’t check all the boxes. Actually, he barely checked any at all! I sat on my bed and went over the list a dozen times, realizing that the two of us are polar opposites and wondering who was

right. Was it my younger self? Were things clearer for her to see? Or was it the new adult version who had just got hitched? I thought the answer was simple, but like marriage, it was anything but black and white. A lot of people watch my social media accounts or hear my husband and I talk about our relationship and ask how we figured it out. In short - we haven’t. At least, not everything (who has?) But we realized early on that if we were going to be happy, that in this thing called marriage (or any relationship really), we had to make sure we were fighting on the same side. Like any marriage, we’ve had our share of tough situations; some more challenging than most. There was a time when we sat across from each other and laughed thinking, ‘how are we even still together?’ and the answer was, we chose love. Whenever we had the choice to throw in the towel, we chose love instead. But

that choice was never simple. It was never easy. It was some of the hardest work either of us ever had to put in. But together, we built something beautiful, something strong.

lWhen

you’re feeling distant, drop everything and schedule a date night and put away your phones. Never ever stop dating. Never forget to look each other in the eye when speaking; we miss out on so much by forgetting to look up and seeing what the other person is feeling through their expressions.

I was told during our early days of marriage by many people that the first couple of years are the hardest, and I guess they are. But between slamming doors and yelling over who’s turn it was to vacuum the living room, we found time to build or own foundation.

lMake a habit of encouraging your partner and complimenting

It worked for us and I hope it works for you too:

lLastly,

lWhen you’re angry, don’t speak straight away. You could say a

lot of things you may regret and can’t ever take back.

lDon’t

make a habit of storming out of a fight. I remember walking out and driving away only to circle the neighborhood and drive right back. There were times when he wanted to leave and I wouldn’t let him; distance would only make us bitter. What helped us was closing that door with both of us on the same side saying, ‘we’re doing this right now, we’re having this fight’ and I can’t tell you how healthy it is to work through things in your relationship head on instead of letting the bitterness pile up within you.

lNever,

ever, go to sleep without talking to each other. Always find a way to say goodnight even if you are not ready to sort through what you’re feeling.

lWhen

you’re ready to talk about why you’re angry or upset, always start with a hug or an ‘I love you’ first. I learnt this from my husband and at first I thought he was crazy! Why would you want to hug someone right at the moment when you’re considering ripping each other’s heads off? Because you love each other more than how angry you are, that’s why. And it does wonders. Your mind setting completely shifts from battle field to peaceful negotiations once you remind yourself and each other why you’re together in the first place.

lStart every morning with a good morning (and an emoji). It may

be cheesy, but he swears it puts him in an infinitely better mood to be able to read my affection through a tiny icon.

lDon’t hesitate to apologize and admit to your mistakes. Again,

it’s not a battle where you’re fighting against each other. Make sure you’re fighting on the same side and that you’re not keeping score.

them frequently. Remind each other of the things you value in each other. Leave a sticky note on the bathroom mirror or in their lunch bag from time to time. but possibly most importantly, give each other space! Don’t suffocate your partner and keep tabs on them all the time. Give each other space to grow and unwind on your own sometimes. It will allow you to reflect and value your time together and will give you both something to talk about when you see each other. Being each other’s shadow all the time is unhealthy (toxic, I would say). No matter how much you love each other, there are bound to be some differences in your preferences and for your relationship to be healthy and grounded, you need to feel like at least a piece of you is still your own. There are obviously many more healthy habits to follow (and toxic ones to avoid), but these are the most important to us personally, and that we feel made our marriage a solid one. In this day and age, who isn’t scrolling through one social media platform or another for the better part of the day? Most of us do, and it becomes easy to forget that most of the images we see are pure fiction, or at least a very polished up lifestyle for the world to see. No-one is going to post the ugly stuff, so you assume the couple you see cozied up on instagram won the relationship lottery. But it doesn’t work that way; like when you admire a famous painting, you saw what the artist decided to put out there, not his torn up sketches, his torched canvases or the callus on his fingers from practice. If you want your relationship to last, jump together with both feet and make a conscious choice every single day to renew that commitment. There is no such thing as the flawless relationship! I know my love story has been anything but conventional, but it’s the rollercoaster ride that gives you the thrill, the excitement and the hysterical laughter in the end for pulling through. It may not be flawless, but in its own way, it is perfect. The couples that are meant to be, are the ones who go through everything that is meant to tear them apart, and come out even stronger.

WIND FARMS:

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR of 215 wind turbines with the capacity to generate power to 300,000 homes. Contrary to the alleged eyesore loathed by many, I found both the sight and size of the estate particularly impressive. The turbines vary in size, the largest being 140 metres tall. The speed of the blade tips can reach 160mph (240kph) and each turbine is capable of producing enough energy to power over 1,000 homes. So how do they work? The blades of the turbines are carefully shaped and angled to allow the wind to push them around. The air slows down as it passes through the turbine and some of the energy from the moving air is converted into electrical energy. A cable in the tower then carries the electricity from the generator to a transformer. This charges the electricity to a higher voltage before sending it to a substation. Here, the voltage is increased again before being passed to the National Grid through wires supported by pylons. From there, it travels to further substations and, finally, to our individual homes and businesses. Probably the last thing you think about when you switch on your TV or make a cup of tea!

ike many, I’m becoming increasingly concerned about the damage we are causing to our environment. Recently, I wrote about plastic pollution and its detrimental effect on the ocean’s ecosystem. But plastic, while immensely damaging, isn’t the only cause for concern. The widespread burning of fossil fuels is not only contributing to global warming, it’s also polluting the environment. Fossil fuels, including petroleum, coal and natural gas, contain high percentages of carbon which can be destructive to the atmosphere as well as the ocean. It’s vital, therefore, that steps are taken to reduce the emissions of such gases. A round of applause, then, for the Al-Sheqaya Renewable Power Plant in Kuwait. We all know how windy it can be in Kuwait - those desert storms can be fierce – so why not take advantage of it and invest in renewable energy? The picture of the giant wind turbine standing tall in the north west of the state was a sight for sore eyes indeed. At last, a step in the right direction towards cleaner energy and renewable energy products.

Whitelee is also a popular destination for school trips. The Visitor Centre hosts regular science workshops, craft activities and exhibitions. You can stand in their wind tunnel, produce your own electricity with the spin of a wheel and get a bird’s eye view of the wind farm with a virtual reality headset. You can also take a bus tour and learn about the habitat, history and ecology of the site. Something for the team at Al-Sheqaya to aspire to, perhaps? A wind farm may not be the obvious place to look for wildlife. However, Whitelee is home to many animals, plants and birds including roe deer, owls, snakes, foxes and otters. Probably not an environment Kuwait is able to replicate but certainly proof that a wind farm can be so much more than just an energy plant. As for the turbines themselves, it was a treat to get up close and personal with these giant, modern windmills. I was dwarfed by their enormity and hypnotised by their sound; a sound I can only describe as an ‘eerie whoosh’ as the sails sliced through the air. Personally, I’m not averse to the sight of a wind farm. I think they add something mysterious and efficacious to an otherwise latent landscape. And why not take advantage of what nature provides?

During my last visit to the UK, I was keen to visit Whitelee Windfarm, the country’s largest onshore wind farm. Since its commission in 2009, the site has been the subject of much controversy. Whilst its supporters are keen to promote the various advantages of its existence, there are those who object to the blot on their otherwise picturesque landscape.

From Kuwait’s point of view, whilst oil is not necessary considered a fossil fuel, its finite supply must surely be a concern. The last thing any country should do is become over reliant on one type of electricity generation. The commitment to the development and construction of renewable energy products must therefore continue and any steps taken towards the development of renewable energy plants must be encouraged and embraced. Certainly, the efforts of Al-Sheqaya Renewable Power Plant and Kuwait Institute of Scientific Research are commendable. The desert state is the ideal location to harvest the power of winds, not only because of the vast amount of land lying idle but also the lack of neighbouring properties likely to object.

Situated in Scotland, a short drive from Glasgow, Whitelee consists

May the wind of change continue.

Renewable energy is collected from renewable resources, such as sunlight, wind, rain and waves. Solar power may seem the obvious choice for Kuwait and other Middle Eastern countries, but the efficiency of wind farms should not be underestimated.

14

Spread over 20 square miles and with 80 miles of internal roads, Whitelee Windfarm offers a surprising alternative for a family day out. There are 130 kilometres of trails accessible by foot, cycle or horse. There’s a designated mountain bike trail, a number of walking and running circuits varying in length, and a scenic hilltop viewing point. There’s also a picnic area (weather permitting). In fact, far from being an unsightly place to be avoided, it’s the perfect venue for a family day out. It’s also a photographer’s dream, providing an endless series of dramatic backdrops.

NOVEMBER 2018

Please introduce yourself to our readers. I am Tamara Jamal, a digital influencer and TV presenter with a passion for fashion and TV. Born and raised in Dubai, I’m originally from Lebanon.

Tell us about your education. I grew up studying in an American school and pursued my Bachelor’s in Business Administration from the American University, Dubai. With a focus on marketing and management, I then studied for a higher diploma in Strategic Marketing.

continuously on your communication skills. It’s a continuous work effort.

One of the most important things you need in order to be successful as a host is to keep yourself current and updated. What is your favourite way to approach this? How do you apply this to your busy schedule? I am always connected online. Social media nowadays is a massive resource of information and knowledge; whether it’s staying updated in fashion, beauty, news, TV or events. I always like reading online and being aware of everything happening around me. Being in Dubai also helps as it’s the Middle East hub for all events and grand launches.

What drew you to media and becoming a TV host? I always had a passion for TV and presenting and was constantly asking my mother to sign me up with a TV network. Back then, because I was still in school, it wasn’t possible. Luckily, I had the presenting skills and talent to get me on social media and then on to my first fashion segment episodes on MBC.

Sometimes the transition between college and a first job can be daunting. What was your first job out of college? Tell us a little bit about your time between college and where you are now. I graduated from AUD in 2011, having already applied to companies ahead of time. I got my first job just over a month later. I’ve always been an independent person and very ambitious, always looking ahead. Before I graduated, I called my dad telling him I wanted to move out of the university accommodation and get my own apartment. I also told him I was ready to fund it on my own as I was doing a part-time research job while studying and had managed to save.

Did your parents ever steer you towards other professions? My mother is a doctor in forensic medicine and always wanted one of us to study and work in medicine. However, that never interested me. Initially, I wanted to study chemical engineering and become an engineer. My parents were happy for me to do whatever interested me the most and three years later, I decided to focus fully on social media and TV.

The entertainment industry doesn’t necessarily provide consistent work. Were you ever faced with this reality? How were you able to overcome times where work was scarce? I was, and still am, fully aware of this point. It’s important to focus on your work and to get the work. Basically, no work will come through if you don’t actually work for it. Also, always plan ahead, prepare creative content and work www.cpmagazine.net

wisdom do you have for these women? Do not give up! Nothing is impossible if you have the will for it. Grow yourself internally and it will definitely reflect externally on your career, and your life as a whole. Growing up, did you have a role model you looked up to? And what is one quote you live by? I always looked up to TV personalities and actors. One quote I live by is: “Don’t let anyone tell you what you’re capable and not capable of.”

What are your hobbies? I grew up playing basketball in school and university. And I love listening to music, both English and Arabic.

What is your favourite food? I’m definitely into Italian cuisine, so pasta and pizza! My second favourite is Mexican food.

What is your favourite business tool or resource? Google and Instagram.

What is your greatest fear? Losing someone I love.

How would you describe your personal fashion style? Very diverse - both Western and Middle Eastern. It can range from elegant chic to high street style depending on the occasion and my mood.

What is the best advice you have ever received? What are the most and least exciting things about being a host? Well, it all started from my Instagram account. As an influencer who produces creative content, including videos, this opened doors to the TV industry. The most exciting thing about it is when the camera rolls and the content is presented. Watching the episodes on the TV afterwards is even more exciting; and receiving positive feedback is the greatest! There is nothing I would consider as the least exciting.

How do you stay motivated through difficult times? By nature, I am a positive thinker and eliminate any negativity from certain people or situations. I keep myself motivated by looking through all of my successful moments and watching my fan base grow. I have always been a very proud and hard working person so this drives me to always continue forward.

What struggles have you faced during your career and how did you overcome them? Everyone faces struggles in their career, or ‘bumps’ as I like to call them. These are completely normal. I always follow the theory that everything happens for a reason. I believe in God’s plan. Always stay positive and surround yourself with positive people who can lift you up.

There are many women who struggle to follow their dreams and transform them into a career. What words of 22

My father told me to always look into the eyes of a person when you want to face them or confront them. It makes a big difference.

What advice would you give to other budding presenters? Continuously work on your skills and take care of how you carry yourself around and in front of the audience.

Do you have a message for the team at CP magazine? Keep up the great work of always carrying the right message and content and highlighting key points. Thank you for this opportunity, I am so happy to be here!

I always like reading online and being aware of everything happening around me.

fumeroism

“When I paint, especially in public, it puts me in a zone where I become super-energized and I feel as though I have wings.”

Fumero’s obsession with art began at the tender age of three. He considers art an extension of his body and mind; just as he needs air to breathe, he needs art to feel alive. His artistic journey includes everything from stick figures and bubble letters to the illegal papering of public walls. His unique ‘grafstract’ wall art is now featured across the globe, from New York City to Kuwait.

NOVEMBER 2018

Please introduce yourself to our readers. My name is Fumero. I am a New York artist. My style is called Fumeroism, the ‘ism’ being the Grafstract. Grafstract is the mechanics of my visual approach to fine art. Grafstract is not an artistic genre; it is my coined term to represent the evolution of the distinctive style of art that I create.

Tell us about your education. I went to the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City. I was there as an undergraduate art student. It was where all the artistic stimuli I explored throughout my life came into fruition and culminated into what I do today.

How did you become interested in graffiti? I became interested in graffiti art at 5 years old. I would see the trains in the subways and the elevated trains in The Bronx, NY. Even my older sister remembers how I used to get excited about NY subway art. At 13, I began creating graffiti in my ‘black book’, a sketchbook used to practice my letter designs. I also started ‘bombing walls’, or spray painting bubble letters at that age. At 14, I created my first 4 colour piece with a 3-d perspective. A cop rolled up on me and my friend. He got caught but I ran and got away!

How old were you the first time you tagged a wall? I have been creating art since I was 3 years old. I have documented proof because my mom took a picture of me crouched down over a puddle in the sidewalk, consciously making a ‘puddle design’ with 3 branches from a bush that had yellow petals, and 4 clothes pins (red, light blue, yellow and wood coloured). At the age of 4, I began drawing on lined note paper, drawing stick and bubble figures.

Where was your first mural? Is it still available to see today? My first mural as Fumero, a professional artist, was in 2010 at Art Base, Miami. I painted a large portrait of my grandfather, ‘The Grampa.’ It no longer remains.

Is Fumero a tag name? Can you tell us a bit more? Fumero is not my tag name, it is my real name and the name I use as a professional artist. When I was a teenager writing graffiti, my tag name was Gusto.

What inspires you to keep creating? I couldn't say what inspired me to create art when I was 4, only that it is innate. What keeps me inspired is the thrill to create. I love to draw and I especially have a passion to illustrate the human anatomy. Creating art has always been in my life and is an extension of my body and mind. It is like oxygen; I need air to breathe and I need art to feel alive.

What makes your work unique and different? I use an extensive colour palette and top it off with a black contour. I love how the black outline makes all the colours fuse together and pop even though the colours are separated. The manner in which I see the real world and translate it into my reality inspires me. I love the process and my process is a thorough one. I see colours as shades. I exaggerate and abstract any person, place or thing with vivid colours that bounce and contrast against each another. This is what causes my art to stand out and be distinctive from other artists.

How has your work evolved through the years? My work has evolved from graffiti art. I abandoned the letter designs and transferred the ‘wild style’ colours into the human anatomy, landscape, or anything from the natural world. I use unnatural colours to express how I see tones of shades. Fumeroism is the embodiment of the evolution from graffiti to what I do, the Grafstract.

Do you paint with spray cans or do you use other techniques or media? I am primarily an acrylic on canvas painter. I use paint and a brush as any traditional artist would, but I execute my vision in an untraditional style. I use line, shape and colour to create movement. I love to place warm and cool colours, and light and dark colours against each other. This formula captures the viewer's eye. I also work with oil pastels, paper collage and spray paint. When I paint public murals I use mostly aerosol. I use latex paint as well to cover large areas on a wall.

Which of your artworks are you most proud of? I have a few I am proud of. The Table Series is a serious body of work on canvas and was the inspiration for my street logo, The Table Series Logo, made for New York City streets in 2006. The paintings are of my family, a lower middle class (poor) and ethnic Italian American NY family sitting around the kitchen table. The TS logo is a symbol and the message is not only about family but how ‘the table’ brings family together. That is how I grew up. The family that breaks bread together stays together is the message. It is very important for young children to grow up like this; keep your friends close but your family even closer. The Table Series Logo is not my family, it represents the universal family unit, gathered together around a table. I started ‘getting up’ this image as street art in 2006. I have murals that I am very proud of. The Grampa, my first large scale mural was painted in 2010 at Art Basel Miami in Wynwood, Miami. Also, The history of Itri, in southern Italy in 2013. I returned in the summer of 2014 to continue this 70 year long mural on Via Cescole, Itri, Italia. The city commissioned me and it is still there today. The Grampa was also painted on a six-story building in the city of Yonkers, NY. A year later I returned to Yonkers to paint my Table Series Logo, based on of the yellow circle sticker I created in 2006. That is what started it all; it represents the origins of my career as a public street artist and contemporary muralist. In 2016, I copied a Table Series painting titled Nanny's Kitchen and recreated it using aerosol during www.cpmagazine.net

Art Basel, Miami. In 2017, I painted Tru York for Black Tap inside their Lower East Side location on Ludlow Street in Manhattan. I loved it so much I recreated it on a 24 by 48 inch canvas and sold it to a Brooklyn restaurant. I am very proud of the fumeroized Dutch Masters Cigar Box that came out a couple of months ago. I redesigned the Dutch Masters logo on canvas using aerosol and acrylic paint and they loved it so much they made 55,000 boxes and called it the Fumeroism Limited Edition. These cigar boxes hold 55 individually wrapped cigars and the box looks fantastic! They are on the shelves now in stores. I love to paint walls because they are large and I love to create large scale imagery and compositions. I enjoy painting for people, bringing the culture of a gallery out into the streets and beautifying communities. Why should walls be dead and barren? That is not esthetically pleasing to the eye. I love to bring my colours to cold and barren walls, bringing them to life. Not everyone walks into galleries or museums but everyone walks the streets. This is why I paint fine art on walls. It inspires me. When I paint, especially in public, it puts me in a zone where I become super-energized and I feel as though I have wings. It takes me away to another place as though I am lifted off the ground. I do not get hungry or tired. I can paint for hours nonstop, climbing up and down ladders. Only rain or darkness can stop my flow. Give me water and a banana and I'm good to go! When I put on my respirator mask, my shades, hat and gloves, I become the ‘glartiator’; an art warrior battling the wall and the hot sun and heat, and challenging myself to go in hard and rock it out.

Have you collaborated with other artists? I have collaborated with a few artists over the years in Brazil, Miami and New York, but just for fun. 99% of time I paint alone.

Is there a dream place worldwide where you would like to create an artwork? I would love to paint in Paris. I would also like to paint in Japan and Africa. I’ve gone global every summer since 2012. I painted in Brazil, Germany, Italy, England, Spain, Denmark and, more recently, in Kuwait. I’m currently painting in Dubai. I am living the dream every time I paint outside of the US.

Can you tell me what it’s like for you when you paint a wall? I have painted in some ‘shady’ places, one of which was in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I painted a large mural in an abandoned lot; a wasteland of garbage and broken beer bottles. There was a huge hole in the ground that was once a basement. It was camouflaged by the mound of garbage and I could easily have fallen 15 feet and been seriously hurt. The mural took a few days to complete. It was in November of 2013 and it was very cold; my fingers were numb even with gloves, because I was outside for hours at a time. This was the craziest mural I painted. I also painted for Black Tap in Las Vegas at The Venetian Casino Hotel. It was crazy because of the construction. There was noise and dust all around me in a tight area.

What’s the riskiest thing you’ve done as a graffiti artist? The riskiest is when I used to do wheatpaste paper art on public walls. This is not legal and a few times I was caught by the cops! My murals are always legal but getting up my paper street art risked my freedom. I would go out after dark while people were sleeping or partying. I was grinding during the NY hot and humid summer nights, climbing tall fences and using a ladder to climb onto rooftops. I put myself out there in open spots using very long extension poles, with buckets of glue or paste. I had to move very quickly because police cars come out of nowhere and appeared like a shark fin through the water's surface! I would be there for the entire night, finishing in the morning in daylight. I call it ‘art after dark productions.’

Tell us about your collaboration with Black Tap? What have you created on the walls of the newly opening branch at the 360 Mall? I began painting for Black Tap in the spring of 2016 at their first location on Broome Street in Soho, Manhattan. The second time was in the spring of 2017 at their LES (Lower East Side) location, then in Las Vegas, and now here in the Middle East (Kuwait and Dubai).

How long did it take to finish the project? What was the biggest challenge in this project? The Black Tap at 360 Mall was a challenge because of the huge wall there. The background alone took me 14 hours to complete and I did that in one day. I began Black Tap 360 on November 3rd and finished on November 11th. The challenge was not only the very large wall but also the time constraints to complete the project. My vision for Black Tap 360 Mall was to bring the Tru York theme to the Middle East. I incorporated old school New York which is what Black Tap is all about. I included my Grafstract and, on the entrance wall, I incorporated NYC iconography with Kuwait City iconography.

Where did you visit in Kuwait and what did you like the most? I didn't get a chance to see Kuwait and meet the people. I worked every day and I only experienced the hotel, the 10 minute taxi ride and 360 Mall. That is all is was able to see of Kuwait City. The people I met were very nice and pleasant.

Do you have a message for the team at CP magazine? Thanks so much for having me, Kuwait. It was a great experience to be the first NY artist to introduce what you call graffiti, but what I call Grafstract, to the ancient sands of Mesopotamia. As-Salaam-Alaikum. I live by the ‘carpe diem’ philosophy. Live each day like your last and make every day count. I am always in a NY state of grind. It is not important whether a person likes or dislikes my art, what is important is that they remember it. www.cpmagazine.net

ASTROTOURISM: STAR GAZING HOLIDAYS!

A

strotourism is a new trend that is seeing travellers choose remote destinations in order to enjoy the beauty of the galaxy. By visiting ‘black sky’ locations, astrotourists are distributing their money and ecological footprint more evenly across the planet. Most of us can appreciate the beauty of the night sky, but there are a growing number of ‘darkness seekers’ looking for next level, celestial experiences. They hunt for places where the sky is the darkest and most clear. The desert is an ideal environment for this kind of viewing, but the mountains and oceans also lend themselves to unobstructed stargazing. With so much light pollution in cities, it’s no wonder that people are heading out into remote lands to bask in the light of the heavenly bodies. Stellar Parks, Sarlight Reserves, Sky Routes and Sky Decks are allowing amateur astronomers the chance to see the sky properly, as few can; a beautiful black void pierced by millions of brilliant heavenly bodies. We have pulled together our top five stargazing hotspots around the world. Plan your next getaway!

SPOT SATURN, JUPITER AND MARS FROM VIETNAM Where: Six Senses Con Dao, Vietnam

Six Senses Con Dao, the first five-star resort in Vietnam’s Con Dao Archipelago, offers guests the opportunity to become one with the universe as they gaze out at the stars from the resort’s private Astronomical Observatory, the first and only privately-owned celestial viewing centre in the southernmost region of Vietnam. Just a short flight from the bustling streets of Saigon lies this tranquil oasis on one of the archipelago’s 16 islands. At the heart of the observatory is a MaksutovCassegrain 127mm telescope, allowing curious minds to marvel at Saturn, Jupiter, Mars and open clusters such as Pleiades and the Beehive Cluster. Visitors can also witness dreamy nebulas and their evolving journeys as stars. The observatory is open twice weekly and up to 30 guests can participate at one time on a complimentary basis at each evening session. From conception to realisation, this imaginative project to build the observatory took a full year of planning and construction. The grand idea originated from Six Senses’ regular celebrity astronomer, Dr Parag Mahajani, an independent consultant and trainer in the fields of science and technology, and a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society of London. With 25 years’ experience under his belt, Dr Parag has been visiting all Six Senses resorts for over a decade, and in each location he delights guests with his wealth of knowledge and passion in the field of astronomy. Dr Parag is in residence at Six Senses Con Dao several times a year, during which he hosts evening slide shows at the authentic Vietnamese restaurant, By The Market, as well as talks on astronomical observations, morning solar observation sessions and exclusive zodiac dinners. Six Senses Con Dao is nestled on a curve of golden sand on the island of Con Son, looking out over the glistening South China Sea. Contemporary in its design, the resort comprises 50 private pool villas and reflects the essence of a traditional fishing village. Protected by lush forest-clad mountains on a mile-long stretch of sand, each private pool villa is designed to showcase the breathtaking natural surroundings. www.sixsenses.com

An ideal place to take in the African night sky is Singita Pamushana, which re-opened in July 2018 following a significant design transformation, with bold new interiors which bring guests even closer to the wild. With nature as a key design informant, the new cliff-top fire pit and suspended bar with 270-degree views of the Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve offer the experience of being totally immersed in nature and provide the perfect location for alfresco dining, sundowners and fireside stargazing. According to Sally Tsiliyiannis, lead architect from GAPP Architects, ‘the new suspended bar deck hangs dramatically over the outermost promontory of the hilltop. Grounded by a backdrop of boulders the deck extends forward to float in the air above the dam.’ Two new two-bedroom suites have also been added to the lodge, offering 8 suites in total and an exclusive-use 5-bedroom villa. Each suite has a private pool overlooking the Malilangwe Dam and surrounding bush. While telescopes are provided to spot the game along the lake shore below and to stargaze, guests can also enjoy walking safaris, community visits, rock art site visits, fishing and sundowner cruises on the dam below the lodge. NOVEMBER 2018

CP Magazine is proud to introduce its five Inspiring Men for 2018. Each year, we pay homage to those men who lead by example and inspire the next generation to achieve great things. Through hard work and perseverance, these men have followed their dreams, put aside their fears and learned from their mistakes; proving that dedication and determination are the keys to success. But none of them did it alone. Each one of our five Inspiring Men has their own story to tell, but all have benefited from the support of family, the aid of teamwork or the motivation of life’s ups and downs. Each one has been inspired by something or someone on their road to success and is now in the privileged position of being able to inspire others. Congratulations to this year’s Inspiring Men. We hope you enjoy their stories.

Abdulghaphor Hajjieh “Today is the first day of the rest of your life.”

For Abdulghaphor Hajjieh, that day was when he was run over by a car. The accident forced him to reevaluate his life. It was an emotional experience, as if a bolt of lightning had suddenly made everything different.

One of Abdulghaphor’s favourite things to do is to the help the people around him. This is evident in both this personal and his professional life. Along with others, he established the Youth Association of Kuwait, the first left-leaning youth organization in Kuwait. ‘I am motivated by the enduring hardship that our Kuwaiti forefathers went through for us to live this comfortable life. I believe we owe it to future generations to work hard for them to have even better opportunities than the ones we have.’

Abdulghaphor also talks about another, less traumatic, life changing experience. When his sister gifted him a Pentium 4 Compaq PC, his curiosity was awakened. ‘There was no Wikipedia page back then, you had to search the web, page by page, and piece together the information.’ Unfortunately, his obsession with his computer had a detrimental effect on his studies, resulting in low grades from Qurain High School. STRIKE A ‘CORD’

C

orduroy. Even the word is strange. It’s spelled strange, it looks strange and it sounds strange. But what’s even stranger is the fact that this velvety, ribbed fabric is making a comeback. When I think of corduroy, I think of stuffy, old English teachers in hacking jackets with corduroy patches on the elbows; or 1970s pop stars with flared, cord trousers; maybe even stiff school uniforms worn until they shine. So what possessed fashion designers to reintroduce this retro material? It reappeared on the autumn/winter runways in 2017 and was soon hitting high street stores (as well as designer ones) in vast numbers. Celebrities were seen wearing matching corduroy jackets and trousers, or autumnal coloured cord trousers paired with chunky knit jumpers. Even coats were made from this stiff, dated textile. But far from being a one season wonder, it’s back in the stores again. Everything from miniskirts, high waist trousers, pinafore dresses, even handbags, is made from this archaic cloth. Once associated with those of a dowdy or nerdy disposition, it was a fabric to be avoided at all costs. Now, on the other hand, it’s a wardrobe must-have for even the most fashion conscious amongst us. 52

NOVEMBER 2018

The advantages, I’m told, include the fact that it’s hard wearing. It comes in many different weights and it gathers and hangs really well. It’s warm, so it’s a perfect autumn/ winter choice. It’s also versatile and will suit both men and women alike. But regardless of how good corduroy is claimed to be, those of us of a certain age may still struggle with the concept. In my opinion, for example, corduroy is second only to crimplene in the ‘not to be seen dead in’ category. Fashion experts, however, insist it’s here to stay (for the time being, at least). Once seemingly only available in dour shades of green or brown, it now boasts a fresh new image in bright, bold tones. How about a buttoned mini skirt in burnt orange? Perhaps a seasonal red pinafore dress, perfect for the holidays? Or maybe a mustard coloured cord shirt teamed with jeans? What better fabric to provide that all-important texture to your outfit? Vintage stores everywhere are also cashing in on the corduroy comeback. Genuine 1970s jackets and trousers are now in high demand along with shirts and dresses from a bygone era. We just can’t seem to get enough of cord. Personally, I’m still not convinced. I might succumb to a new cord cushion to jazz up my sofa, but corduroy trousers? No thanks.

WRITING MOVIE

WRONGS moviewrongs.com by: JIM WEST

Mandy

Directed by Panos Cosmatos Written by Panos Cosmatos and Aaron Stewart-Ahn

W

ith all of the rave reviews out there, I wonder if they saw the same film I did. Sure, Nic Cage is your typical Nic Cage, but there was nothing on display that I would rave about. The director also created the story, and this story is not unique in the slightest. In fact, it borrows so heavily from other cult classics, it’s like Frankenstein; made up of parts from better films with better stories to tell.

Here come the spoilers. Red Miller (Nic Cage) and Mandy Bloom (Andrea Riseborough) live in a house in the mountains; the ‘Shadow Mountains.’ Red is a lumberjack and Mandy is an artist. Both live quiet and uneventful lives. That is until the day Mandy is walking along the road and a van full of cult members drives by, their leader taking a liking to Mandy. The film at this point is already running a bit long with exposition (by at least five minutes worth of screen time), then takes a nose dive as what passes as one part Hellraiser, one part Children of the Corn, and a healthy dose of Stranger Things take over. I found myself trying hard to find a scene or sequence that was not homage to another film. I can say Evil Dead, Mad Max, and a plethora of other films can be traced to this film, but this film doesn’t do them justice at all. And don’t get me started on the blue and red obsessive lighting! Red gets tied up and has to watch his wife burn alive until he eventually gets free and goes on a revenge killing spree. He gets a crossbow named Reaper that for some reason was stored at a friend’s house with no real explanation why (other than to set up some dialogue about the cult). He then blacksmiths a fantastical 58

NOVEMBER 2018

weapon, even though nothing prior in the film indicates he was capable of such workmanship. Then he spends an entire night killing everyone in such a cheesy way that it’s actually laughable (if it wasn’t trying too hard to pass as gory and horrific). So, how to fix this film? Well for starters, let’s break down the film as a feverish LCD trip gone bad. If that is established, we can then work that angle into this film. After the climax of the film, have Mandy drive up in a car to pick up Red, which would be different from him getting into the car and seeing Mandy (or Mandy as a ghost). When Mandy looks at him from the car she sees him with sticks in his hands - he has been crushing a piece of a tree bark as if it was the cult leader’s head. They get in the car and drive home, but the end credits show what really happened. Mandy’s friends came over and Red started to have a massive bad LSD trip and they decide to mess with him all night. We get cuts of various scenes in the film, but told from the friends’ perspective. Mandy passed out so she’s unaware what her friends were doing until she wakes up and goes to pick up Red. This would lend reason why there were so many homages to other films as the friends went along improvising ways to continue messing with Red. Red never killed anyone but they staged fights with Red with bushes and trees. Immediately the film would deserve a repeat viewing, or at least get viewers to come again and drag their friends along for the trip (pun intended). Finally, doing something as bold as this direction would give the horror fantasy genre something special to elevate this film to a true cult status, and not just a wannabe.

Behind every GREAT MAN is a Tom Ford designer suit (or a GREAT WOMAN that chose it)

N

ow hold on gents, I am definitely not implying that your fashion statements are not sound and trendy, but it’s always good to have a second female opinion, don’t you think? As we women are usually escorted to the malls by our husbands for a second opinion, it goes without saying that we should share our opinion when it comes to your styles; just an extra boost in making a fashionable decision as to what’s hot and what’s not in masculine fashions and styles. We all know trends tend to change, sometimes dramatically, from season to season, so it’s always good to know what is in and what is definitely out. Knowing that allows any man to be up to date with some (if not all) of the runway shows for men’s clothing and designer lines as well as the men’s designers’ blogs; not forgetting the latest in street style and the many other fashionable links and style applications that are out there. Unfortunately, a man’s daily routine rarely involves checking up on the latest in trends on line, but women are more keen and prone to use a whole lot more fashionable links and sights. So, you gents have found a new best friend in me, because I’m going to let you know what’s in and what’s out so you can stay fashionable, trendy and stylish all year round. Fashion is a game; it has rules, restrictions and reservations. Like any other game, the rules are simple and the consequences of trial and error are usually visible (sometimes unforgettable). Thanks to selfies and other picture uploads, the whole world knows about your fashion blunder! So do be careful and take your time in choosing RIGHT. Which brings us to rule number one of the game: Take your time in selecting a killer style that never kills your style. And remember, what looks great and chic on your best mate, might look fiercely ugly on you! Keep in mind that no two bodies are the same. Secondly, don’t be afraid of colour. Yes, colour is your friend. Do use colour when you need to but don’t go over-board with it so you’ll resemble a lit Christmas tree at spring time. And remember one very important thing; choose your colour palette according to your skin tone and undertone (basic, neutral or warm or cool). Colour makes all the difference so choose accordingly. Thirdly, CLASS is everlasting. Retro/AvantGarde does not suit everyone. For example, have you ever owned a blazer or a pair of slacks that you proudly bought a couple years back and have recently worn to the office? I am sure you have (and still do!) If I had to

guess, it would be a classical style blazer or pair of off-waist pencil boot-legged jeans. Am I right? And did you ever do the unthinkable and purchase a complicated pair of low fitted slacks with a designer complex flashy T-shirt that every time you think of wearing for the second time you never do? Be honest now gents! My guess would be a very colourful pair of slacks with multi zippers and pockets and an equally unappealing T-shirt. Sometimes avant-gardism is showcased beautifully on the runways and many men do purchase an item or two. However, they can’t seem to muster the courage to actually wear them. But no worries, it happens to the best and the most fashionable of us. It is more than fashionably allowed to make a statement with wacky, unsound trends, but remember that these styles die – and die fast! They can be the successful show-stopper in one season and gone the next. So stick to the more lasting and more playful ready to wear styles and trends that you can get your hands on. Finally, AGE DOES MATTER and if someone says otherwise then they must have seen a convincing fifty-year-old gentleman, dressed like he’s in his twenties, who actually pulled it off! If so, I rest my case and withdraw my comments. But since age is not always in the heart and a gentleman in his fifties would never want, nor have, the demeanor and bearing of a much younger man, I will most definitely continue my point. Age does matter. It matters a lot. I have seen a young man and a much older man both wearing the same suit. The difference in appropriate style is 360 degrees and one thing I noticed is that men should wear the garment and never allow the garment to wear them. So dress age appropriately. If you are looking to subtract some years off your biological calendar, add a trendy belt and a solid pale or bold coloured shirt and lose that tie! By doing that, you would achieve both a mature look and a fresher, younger and trendier elegance. Try not to erase the number of glorious years from that salt and pepper Richard Gere natural hair colour by doing otherwise. It looks and feels terrible so please remember who you are as a man and what you do for a living, and never forget that with every year, you gain wisdom in your style and maturity in your looks; which is exactly what younger men are hoping to get when they reach your esteemed age. And that, dear gents, is enough said. Stay classy, definitely trendy, and stay true to who you really are - a gentleman inside and out! www.cpmagazine.net

The Midnight Zodiac Lumineux watches’ spellbinding illumination has its origins in a phenomenon known as piezoelectricity. An object of study since the 18th century, it refers to the capacity of certain materials to accumulate an electric charge when subjected to mechanical constraints. Developed exclusively for Van Cleef & Arpels, the module incorporates a piezoceramic blade whose vibration under the effect of the watch’s movement enables electrical energy to be generated mechanically. This energy is then used to supply from four to six LEDs: at the press of a button, they backlight the dial’s translucent enamel beads for about three seconds. 72

The Conquest V.H.P. by Longines offers new sporty models

The Conquest V.H.P. represents a new achievement in the field of quartz, combining great precision, high technicality and a sporty look, marked by the brand’s unique elegance. In the true essence of Conquest – the ultimate sports line – the brand now proposes chronographs that bring together all of the qualities of the Conquest V.H.P. movement. Longines’ history with quartz has been one full of technical innovations and feats. In 1954, the first quartz watch set a precision record at the Neuchâtel Observatory. It would be fitted into the legendary Chronocinégines, an instrument that became a pioneer in the history of timekeeping, as it provided judges with a film strip composed of a series of prints, allowing them to follow the athletes’ movement as they crossed the finish line. In 1969, technological mastery led Longines to reveal the Ultra-Quartz, the first quartz movement designed for wristwatches. A huge stride was made in 1984 with the quartz calibre fitted in the first Conquest V.H.P., setting a precision record for that time. As an extension of these historic milestones, the winged hourglass brand presents its new Conquest V.H.P., now also available with a chronograph calibre in various chromatic variations. The movement developed exclusively for Longines stands out for its high degree of precision for an analog watch (±5 s/yr) and its ability to reset its hands after an impact or exposure to a magnetic field, using the GPD (Gear Position Detection) system. These attractive features are likely responsible for its status as an exceptional movement, to which a very long battery life and a perpetual calendar must be added.

Introducing the Hamilton Khaki X-Wind Auto Chrono Limited Edition

Based on the original Khaki X-Wind Auto Chrono, the 2018 Limited Edition is packed with aviation features for pilots and offers a technical perspective including the ground-breaking crosswind calculator of the original. Limited to just 1,918 individually numbered pieces, the Khaki X-Wind Auto Chrono Limited Edition features a robust 45 mm stainless steel case. Inside the case is the H-21-Si, the first Hamilton chronograph movement with a silicon hairspring. This material makes the movement more precise as silicon is non-magnetic and less sensitive to shocks. The former is an important feature for pilots because they often stay in environments with high magnetic fields, such as airports. In addition, the movement has been precision certified by COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres) as a chronometer.

Readers of auto motor und sport put Ghibli first The readers' choice "autonis - the best design novelty 2018" of auto motor und sport, the renowned German car magazine, is always a special indicator of the design capabilities of a car brand. Heralded as the ‘Oscars of the Luxury Industry’, the aim of the annual event is to reward and celebrate excellence and innovation. Presenting the award, Sir Eric Peacock described Aston Martin as a “powerful, hugely aspirational brand that is the epitome of luxury” and defied anyone in the room not to covet it. He went on to say the last 12 months have been an “Annus Magnificus” for the brand as it “soared into profit, increasing sales by an astonishing 8% in the first half of the year alone…it has been one of the fastest turnarounds and renaissances the luxury industry has ever seen”. You probably notice that grace makes up a big part of disgrace. Combine this with the dis- prefix, meaning “the opposite of,” and you get a word that involves shame and dishonor. Think of disgrace as a kind of fall from grace — it’s what happens when you do something that causes you to lose favor or damages your reputation. Be the answer to someone's impossible dream with the new moon on November 7. A problem that never interested you could get you involved now, to everybody's benefit. Do good and feel great about it. A romantic matter makes more sense on the ninth when Venus trines Mars. Mars enters Pisces on November 15. A fantasy could take on more life. The next day, Venus goes direct and Mercury goes retrograde. Slow down and listen more closely. On the nineteenth, Mars squares Jupiter and it could be harder to be as ambitious as you want.

Family and home life look great with the new moon on the seventh. Warm your heart with a major change - or a minor change that gives you major satisfaction, totally practical and utilitarian with nothing cosmetic about it. On November 16, Venus finally goes direct as Mercury goes retrograde. Harsh feelings may soften, but it's probably too soon for softer words that won't be misunderstood. During the full moon on the twenty-second, a lot of wonderful things may call you, but the strongest urge mwight be to get away from it all, go out, and be with people. That can be valuable, too, so don't beat yourself up if you don't get much done. You can do that later. The sun enters Sagittarius today, too. The social urge is strong.

When the new moon arrives on November 7, the most productive and pleasant times might be spent in private or with one or two special intimate friends. Afterward, you could realize that a great insight has come your way. The next day, Jupiter enters Sagittarius. It might take extra effort to pace yourself and not get carried away. Be generous, within reason. On the sixteenth, Venus goes direct as Mercury goes retrograde. Give yourself more time before speaking or acting, especially about love. Love is all that matters on the November 22 full moon. Follow your heart, but not too far.

(December 22 - January 19)

On November 6, the moon conjoins Venus and people will want to be friendlier. Enjoy the bright vibes. The next day’s new moon brings you a cosmic infusion of love. It might be a fresh, new romantic interest already near and dear to your heart. You might have trouble not overreacting, but a big reaction might be appropriate. On the ninth, the Venus-Mars trine makes it reasier to love. Venus finally goes direct on November 16 as Mercury goes retrograde. A relationship may thaw, but take your time anyway.

The November 7 new moon brings neighbors and friends together. It might not be a block party, but it will still feel like one. Get cooperation and make a lot of practical connections. On the sixteenth, Venus goes direct shortly before Mercury goes retrograde. Stay organized, slow down on making decisions, and let a romantic matter settle down before celebrating. Acquaintances or co-workers could make demands of you during the November 22 full moon, but you should be able to placate them with no trouble at all. This may take a bit of time away from family or home life, but it should be nothing too severe. You can make a lot of people happy now.

You're a social magnet with the new moon on November 7. People you never considered talking to could be drawn to you and want opinions, advice, and acknowledgement. Be gracious but not gratuitous with your praise. On the eleventh, the moon-Saturn conjunction gives you a bit more authority to accomplish a lot. Act responsibly and respectfully. Venus goes direct and Mercury goes retrograde on November 16. A relationship could become more authentic, if not easier, in the next several days. Misunderstandings are still possible. During the full moon on the twenty-second, you might have a lot going on and think that your plate is already full.

Take good care of yourself and don't get too carried away during the new moon on November 7. There's always more to do than there's time for. Pace yourself and focus. What you accomplish now will not need to be done again. On the ninth, the moon conjoins Mercury. Think long and deeply about something important. Mercury turns retrograde on November 16, just after Venus turns direct. Don't be in a hurry to speak before thinking, especially about love. For the full moon on the twenty-second, see elements of yourself in your partner. Be more generous. You'll be amazed by how much goodwill and affection come back to you. Now go out and be more ambitious together.

The new moon on November 7 could bring you money or something tangible of great value. It may not be measured in instant cash, but the opportunity to make it happen soon is already here. On the ninth, Venus trines Mars and love might get easier to feel, but it won’t be easier to share or express. On November 16, Venus finally turns direct shortly before Mercury turns retrograde. Speak carefully, if at all. It might be a good day to simply listen. When the full moon arrives on November 22, your mind could bounce off a few walls, but try to limit knee-jerk reactions.

Uranus retrograde reenters Aries on November 6. Get more adventurous again - in a subdued way. The new moon the next day lets you be the hero or go-to person at work or in a social setting. Tidy up a sticky situation, make it look easy, and get a lot of credit from a lot of people. On the sixteenth, Venus goes direct shortly before Mercury goes retrograde. Feel more comfortable about a romantic relationship while not needing to be outspoken about your feelings. The moon-Uranus conjunction on November 20 lets you feel spunkier for a while. Don’t fret if the full moon on the twenty-second knocks you sideways. Even you can be indecisive at times.

PISCES

(June 21 - July 22)

(October 23 - November)

(February 19 - March 20)

On November 5, the sun in Scorpio trines Neptune in Pisces. The world gets more emotional for you, but not for everyone around you. The new moon on the seventh wants you to remember a long-forgotten heart's desire. It could be something utterly personal that revives an old, important love. Indulge yourself. On November 16, Venus goes direct shortly before Mercury goes retrograde. True love won't need to explain anything. You might be full of energy under the full moon on the twentysecond, and people could be tugging at you to fill up your time with their concerns. You won't let that happen, though. Pamper your inner child - and your deeper mind - with more quality, private peace and quiet. Let the world buzz away without you.

Go for broke with the new moon on November 7. You have power and resources that most people can't imagine and that nobody else can even see. Pick something meaningful and good and get it done. Venus trines Mars on the ninth. Love may be strong, but it’s still under wraps. On November 15, Mars enters Pisces. You might find it easier to read people now. Venus goes direct and Mercury goes retrograde the next day. Be patient with a love that might be having trouble clearly expressing itself. People could get on your nerves during the full moon on the twenty-second, but it doesn't have to be that way. You have smarts and resources that others lack, and there might be some passive-aggressive jealousy directed at you. Don't feel threatened by anything or anyone. Feel calm and secure.

The sun-Neptune trine on November 5 keeps love and dreams bright and alive. Your world gets bigger in the most fundamental of ways with the new moon on the seventh. Don't be provincial. Be more expansive and adventurous. Mars enters Pisces on the fifteenth. It might feel awkward, but sincere affection won't be denied. The next day, Venus goes direct and Mercury goes retrograde. Be organized, and don't expect romance to instantly ignite. True love is still alive even if not visible. Your home environment comes into focus during the full moon on November 22. You can easily finish a big but languishing remodel, rearrangement, or other major task. You can find helping hands, too, if you want or need. Be happier with how your space feels and looks, even if it's only after straightening your book or magazine collection.
