FOR THE LOVE OF READING Gill Sherry

’ve always been a reader. I was encouraged to read from an early age and a good book would always take priority over the TV. My favoured books as a child included The Magic Porridge Pot (Paul Galdone), the Moomin series by Tove Janssen and, of course, Enid Blyton’s Famous Five. As I matured, so too did my choice of reading material. My sister introduced me to Sebastian Faulks (Birdsong is still one of my all-time favourites) but I also lost myself in psychological thrillers, the odd romance novel and numerous autobiographies. As a writer, I’ve never been more aware of the importance of reading. Firstly, why should I expect people to read my work if I don’t read the work of others? Secondly, reading is learning. Whether it’s the use of grammar, the structure of a sentence or the imaginative use of language, by reading regularly we are able to expand our knowledge and appreciate the power of the written word. Occasionally, I still stumble across an unfamiliar word and relish the opportunity to search my dictionary for its meaning. Reading also allows us to identify what works on the page and what doesn’t and, perhaps most importantly of all, it stimulates our imagination. I’m staggered when people tell me they don’t read, particularly when they cite lack of time as the reason for their reluctance to enjoy this age old pastime. Those same people, by their own admission, spend countless hours glued to their mobile phones. The fact that they prefer to indulge in petty bickering on Twitter, comment on what their friends had for breakfast on Facebook, or search for a so-called inspiring quote on Instagram is absurd. This endless scrolling eats up hours of precious time and breeds negativity. It is widely accepted that social media is linked to depression and anxiety, particularly in teens and adolescents. The constant pressure bred from staged images, false lives and unrealistic expectations is damaging to mental health. But it’s not just youth who are consumed by social media. Adults too are addicted to the pointless exercise of scrutinising the false lives of strangers, commenting on the posts of celebrities they’re never likely to meet and driven by the perverse need to attract more followers. Over breakfast this morning, I devoured two chapters of a rather captivating novel. I was impressed with the author’s style of writing, the clever way his plot unfolded and the quirky traits of his characters. Of course, I could have scrolled through my Instagram account (yes, I do have one), reactivated my Facebook account (not used for over five years) or read whatever blurb our world leaders were churning out on Twitter. I chose not to, preferring to read something well written and imaginative over the trivial nonsense available online. I shall do the same at lunchtime and, more than likely, before I go to bed. And I shall repeat the pattern tomorrow, and the day after, and the day after that, keen to discover what happens next. Authors can spend years learning their craft. They make untold sacrifices and endure hours of solitude purely for the pleasure of telling their story and entertaining their readers. The very least we can do is read what they’ve written. Rather than encouraging negative thoughts and unnecessary anxiety, a book takes you on a journey of discovery. Depending on the book, it can inspire you to write, to cook or to travel. It can teach you about history, geography or science. It may be humorous, emotional, intriguing or suspenseful. A good book

can awaken your senses and transform you into a wondrous world of imagery that’s so much more rewarding than anything online and, when you consider the time wasted on other pointless pastimes, a book is a healthy and welcome diversion. Of course, it could be argued that books are no less make-believe than the fake stories found on your social media feed. A novel is fiction, after all. However, it is written with your satisfaction in mind and aims to bring delight, gratification and joy. Compare that with those posting their own stories on social media where their intention is to please no-one but themselves. True, a book may be fictional but at least it’s promoted as such; it makes no secret of its content or its intentions. The make-believe we are subjected to by certain bloggers, vloggers or instagrammers (or whatever else they like to call themselves) is fantasy dressed up as reality. To use an age-old cliché, it’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing so don’t be surprised when it bites you. Reading a book is time well spent and, without your phone as a distraction, you have more time to read than you think.

Recommended Reads I must confess, I’m a lover of imagery when it comes to novels. Some authors can transport you to a French marketplace, an African village or a quaint English harbour in just one clever sentence. Their descriptive language and awareness of the senses are key to bringing the story alive, allowing the reader to identify with the characters and become engrossed in the tale. One of my favourite books, based on imagery alone, is A Heart Bent out of Shape by Emylia Hall. Based in the Swiss city of Lausanne, her descriptive language brings the city alive, demonstrated perfectly by her use of metaphor: ‘The Hotel Le Nouveau Monde was wedding cake white, laced with wroughtiron balconies and capped with tangerine awnings.’ The image conjured by this simple sentence is far more beautiful than any photograph taken and shared on Instagram. This is where the minds of both writer and reader combine to produce a lasting picture only visible to those prepared to take the journey. The French Affair by Susan Lewis is equally enchanting. Not only does it describe the French countryside in glorious detail, and the cuisine with mouth watering brilliance, it also includes a surprisingly unexpected twist. Another master of imagery is Carlos Ruiz Zafón. This is taken from The Shadow of the Wind: ‘Dusk fell almost surreptitiously, with a cold breeze and a mantle of purple light that slid between the gaps in the streets.’ Such is my love of books, it would take forever to list my favourites. And of course, you should choose your own preferred authors and genres. It’s not for me to dictate what you read, only to encourage that you do.

The Saudi Arabian player won what was then the FIFA Interactive World Cup Grand Final in Munich, Germany, in 2015 and has ultimately become an icon of the E-Sports world, acquiring the privilege to be in the company of lifelong legends, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Lionel Messi. Teams who end up in a tie would play a Golden Goal round where it’ll lead to a penalty shootout switching players per shoot. Sounds intense huh? 151 teams battled it out in the qualifiers and only the top eight thrown – thirty teams made it to the on-ground National Final, held at 360 Mall on October 17. When I learnt that they were reintroducing the Chevrolet Blazer to the market this year, I was excited and curious to see what they had done to this great model whose history goes all the way back to 1969, leaving behind a trail of acclaimed models over the years. For those who might be new to this name, the Blazer was a typical “off road” vehicle back in the day before the SUV hype caught up with us. The 2019 Chevrolet Blazer has been dabbed the trendiest SUV in the market currently, attracting both young and old buyers since it was released. I wanted to get a closer look at the vehicle to see how they had reimagined it. The 2019 version of the Blazer is available in 5 Trims namely: 1LT, 2LT, 3LT, RS and Premier. Coming from a model that has always received immense positive reviews in the past, I wanted to get a closer look to decide whether the vehicle upheld its steady progress as an outstanding SUV. After days of waiting, my team and I finally got a chance to do a test drive of Chevrolet Blazer RS (sport trim) since the vehicle is currently available under different trims. The first feature that caught my eyes on the first look of the Chevrolet Blazer was its striking sleek body design that immediately impressed my quite choosy attention. The Blazer has managed to keep its SUV look physically while still giving it the sleek sporty look similar to those of the company’s top rating sports car, the Chevrolet Camaro. The infusion of these two features makes Blazer stand out from all other SUVs in the market. The SUV possesses a bold and athletic look even from far, with its exterior features carefully designed to reflect Chevrolet’s magnificent modern designs. Physically, Blazer satisfies the appetite of many people who prefer cars with sporty designs while still enjoy a powerful and strong look. It is definitely a car that will have people turning heads in a parking lot full of other SUVs. Its styling is something worth commending for maintaining Camaro’s legendary muscle car appearance; it is simply way cooler than its competitors. The front of the Blazer has Camaro’s lustrous design, with mind-blowingly slim and lowplaced HID headlights placed slightly above the LED daytime running lamps. The open grille between the headlamps works so well in complementing the overall boldness of the vehicle. The hood has been well stylized with the bodyline curving in as it comes up instead of going just straight back, adding to the aggressive yet cohesive look of the SUV. Blazer 24

has nice roof rails that can be fitted with cross bars to make room on the roof, just like many SUVs but still boasts of being shorter, adding up to its sporty design. The rear corner windows have a slim and trim pattern, peaking towards the end to give the car a beautiful floating roof appearance. On the rear end, the SUV does not disappoint. It is a flawless continuation of the overall cool design, with the same slim style of LED lamps. In my opinion, echoing the design and style of the legendary Camaro, the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer made the right decision since it dared the odds and introduced interesting features to the SUV market. It remains the most progressive Chevrolet crossover design theme. Its bold features clearly expressed by a wide stance, a high beltline, tight proportions and sensational sculpting. This, plus a truculent front end is complemented by a prominent character line that running along the side of the vehicle and dramatically goes up at the rear to join stylishly with a splendid roof spoiler. For those who love customization, the Blazer is adjustable to match your color preferences. The vehicle that I got to test for instance, has been customized in Kuwait, to accommodate Kuwait’s favorite color, a finishing of Black. This is therefore another advantage for those who want the freedom to choose how their vehicle looks. Another impressive thing about the Blazer is how the wheel arches are pronounced:

the standard 18-inch aluminum rims are expandable to available 21-inch wheels on the RS and Premier. Overall, the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer is overflowing with styling details that appeal to the modern crossover driver. Getting inside the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer’s cabin, it is a clear reflection of the bold exterior theme with sporty cool looks. Just like its exterior, the interior, borrows a lot from the Camaro, and it looks like most of its ideas came straight from that car’s cockpit. If you are a fan of sport cars, especially the Camaro then you will definitely be impressed Blazer’s central stack of controls and oversized circular air vents that look exactly like those of the Camaro. The interior design of the Blazer is crafted to emphasize space and customer customization with a variety of styling choices available for the users for different models. The Blazer has other sporty details including a padded knee area and grab handles on the doors. The finishing and material of the door panels is one feature that impressed me as soon as I got inside the car. There is high quality leather stretching from the armrest all the way to the door. The material used transitions to a softer, glossy plastic as you get inside to the dashboard. The RS trim has an 8-inch infotainment screen and the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 interface. We already know that this system has earned lots of accolades from critics for being user

friendly through its easy and uncomplicated layout, clear graphics, responsive display as well as the popular convenient shortcut bar. In addition to those unmatched features, the system has enchanting elements such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and impressive four USB ports. The 2019 Blazer also offers other high-tech upgrades such as a Wi-Fi hot spot, wireless charging, and a navigation system. The premium Bose sound system, which is arguably the best car sound system is also incorporated to the SUV, wrapping up the car’s entertainment system in style. Another interesting feature about the Chevrolet infotainment 3 system is its ability to remember different user’s preferences such as ambient lighting and audio settings. The five-seat 2019 Blazer RS is reasonably comfortable and spacious with the second row boasting of more legroom than the average midsize SUVs available in the market today. The front seats are standard and manually adjustable while the reclining second row seats that can slide to adjust space when needed. In addition to this, Blazer offers luxe options, such as perforated leather seats, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats for customers who enjoy a little more luxury. The headroom in the vehicle, which has a considerably low roofline compared to other mid-size SUVs, is surprisingly imposing, especially when it comes with a sunroof. In

terms of cargo space, the 2019 Blazer has a 30.5-cubic-feet hold, expandable to 64.2-cubic feet by folding the second row seats flat. There is an optional cargo management system also, that comes with a cargo fence as well as a floor-mounted rail system, which simplifies tasks such as loading things like backpacks and grocery bags, which I have to say is a clever feature they added up in this SUV. After feeling the exterior and interior parts of the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer RS, It was time to get the real hand-on experience with the car I had already fallen in love with. We decided that it would be selfish to go on a test drive on our own, so we decided to invite our friend, and a member of the national squash team, AlRamzi, to join us and our photography team to do the test drive. We set this for the next day and we decided to take the car all the way to Boubayan Island, located across the new Sheikh Jaber AlAhmad Al-Sabah Causeway. We agreed that this route would be good enough to help us feel test the car’s performance. I could tell that everyone in the team was as excited as I was. We couldn’t wait for the following day. Now, before I get to the experience we had with the Blazer, let me enlighten you about a few performance stats you need to know about the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer. Blazer features a standard 2.5L 4 cylinder

engine on 1LT, and a standard 3.6L V6 engine on 2LT, 3LT, RS and Premier trims. The 2019 Blazer is available with two engine choices for you; 4 cylinder and V6. Both units come with an advanced 9-speed transmission as well as feature intelligent start/stop technology which stops the engine when the power is not required. Using the Traction Select feature available on all models, drivers are able to make real-time adjustments to the vehicle’s driving mode for different road conditions. The RS and Premier trims offer a more state-of-the-art twin-clutch AWD technology that really helps optimize traction for every condition by providing great performance in wet conditions, while providing advanced stability in dry weather. All these technologies brought together mean that the Blazer delivers an excellent balance of performance and fuel efficiency. AWD Blazers come standard with a 3.6-liter V6 engine while FWD models can be fitted a with a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine. The Blazer’s 3.6-liter V6 produces impressive 305 horsepower and 365 Nm of torque which is more power than most of its competitors. It is also important to note that this engine is routed via a high-tech nine-speed automatic transmission, pairing the engine and transmission in a nice way. In addition to this great engine performance prowess, the Blazer’s steering, braking, and handling are all made for daily comfort. www.cpmagazine.net

Safety wise, Chevy is known for offering one of todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most advanced safety features, and this is quite echoed by the 2019 Blazer. There are several safety options available for the Blazer such as blind spot-monitoring, rear parking sensors and rear-cross-traffic alert. More advanced safety features like 360-degree Surround Vision camera, adaptive cruise control and forward collision alert with automatic emergency braking are available for the RS and Premier trims of the Blazer. Other safety features worth noting on the Blazer are the Lane Change Alert, Rear Park Assist and a distance indicator. These safety measures integrated to its astonishing technology makes any driver comfortable of and confident of their safety when going out on the new Chevrolet Blazer. After learning all that about the Blazer, it was now time for us to experience the vehicle and decide whether all the features I have explained above are reflected in the driving experience. After settling in the car with my friend, AlRamzi, the first comment we both had for this vehicle was the fact that it was comfortable. The spacious seats as well as the ambient feel of the interior are something worth your time and money. The ignition button I also noted was placed slightly above the usual area beneath the steering wheel, making it more accessible. The interior was generally roomy and quiet, which is quite commendable. Once started, the engine sounded great and boosted our morale as we prepared for takeoff. One thing that impressed me about the blazer was how it accelerated swiftly, with almost immediate thrust and responsive shifts. It gave me the feeling of driving a powerful yet friendly beast, which in a way describes the Blazer. Overall, the ride was splendid, with the SUV handling bumps well, thanks to its suspensions that also worked to minimize body movements and brought about a steady and firm feeling while driving through different landscapes. The ride was steady and smooth even on areas of the road that were twisty, hence complementing the vehicleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s outstanding handling and performance capabilities. The drive modes also worked well, changing the vehicleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s features to best handle various conditions. Its sporty appearance is also felt in the ride, working to give the SUV a solid and nimble feel. To wrap things up, I think the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer is a great reintroduction to the SUV market and definitely a trendsetter in terms of how it has successfully blended the sporty look of the Camaro with the SUV capabilities to bring a cool and fresh design that has been missing in most SUVs. This one is most definitely going to be a favorite for young people.

Ultimate Italian Elegance: The Maserati Quattroporte MY19

The story of Maserati’s reign in sophisticated and stylish cars starts way back in 1963 when they launched the world’s first-ever luxury sports sedan. Although they have had a significantly impressive models throughout their 100-year spell, the 2019 Maserati Quattroporte is arguably unrivaled in the way its designers have blended elegance and athletic attitude into this masterpiece to make it the beacon for Maserati’s Italian style and heritage. The Quattroporte has elegantly embraced the virtues that made Maserati the master of Sedan Sports cars. On the outside, the exterior detailing of the Quattroporte is as distinctive and exclusive as its predecessors to say the least. The dominant, powerful nose is impressively carved around the pointed three-dimensional grille to bring about a seductive and aggressive shark-nose effect. This signature grille serves as a functional element of the car’s active aerodynamics, integrating an Air Shutter between the air vents and the radiator. MY19 offers a choice of ten body including two brand new tri-coat colors; the Rosso Potente, and the deep dark Blu Nobile, which is my personal favorite. There is also a choice of nine alloy wheels in six different designs in sizes ranging from 19 to 21-inch and new entries for the MY19 are the 20-inch Perseo and the 21-inch Atlante wheels.

It would be wayward to talk about the exterior of the Quattroporte MY19 without mentioning the adaptive full LED headlights that flaunt the front of all versions of the car. The headlights support several splendid features including Daytime Running Lights (DRL), parking and turn lights, featuring Static Bending Lights and automatic height regulation. The DRLs are horizontal with the headlamps taking a three-blade design to match the signature Maserati wing air ducts. Another imposing feature of the Quattroporte MY19 headlights is the front camera that supports the BiLed Glarefree adaptive high beam which can create a light ‘tunnel’ by lowering the beams to reduce the light shining on vehicles travelling towards you, while keeping all other zones fully illuminated. This allows the driver to maintain high beam without dazzling oncoming drivers. Getting inside the Maserati Quattroporte MY19 feels almost like entering into a luxuriously and exclusive first class lounge with natural Pieno Fiore leather and plenty of room for both the driver and passengers. The three-seat bench offers excellent legroom in the rear, and they feature ventilation and electrical movement, ensuring great relaxation during long working trips. The armrests are fitted with USB sockets and two foldaway cup holders and the seats can be fitted with individual entertainment screens. In a nutshell, the interior delivers streamlined forms, which furnish the dashboard and tunnel with a feeling of lightness. The dashboard itself features various exclusive trims, embossing the refined character of the Quattroporte. The interior is driverfriendly with a 7” TFT display for the analogue

rev-counter and speedometer. The steering wheel is leather-finished and is electrically adjustable to take care of the driver’s height and reach. The lighting inside the Maserati Quattroporte MY19 is remarkable, with an optical fibre running along the dashboard and doors to give the interior a deluxe look. The front and rear ceiling lights incorporate a diffused lighting lamp and two separate reading lights. The Quattroporte MY19 comes with the legendary MTC+ infotainment system based on a highresolution 8.4” capacitive touch screen, with updated graphics and improved Climate Control functions. The Climate control comes with an Air Sensor that prevents toxic gases and polluted air from entering the cabin. The infotainment system in the Quattroporte MY19 offers great interaction as well as compatibility with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring functions. The Siri Smart Personal Assistant can also be used in the car. MTC+ also controls the front seat heating and ventilation, the steering wheel heating and the operation of the power rear sunblind. In the case of the optional rear seat entertainment unit, the Quattroporte offers two 10.2” LCD displays. It also includes an A/V-IN connection for devices such as video game consoles, cameras, video cameras or laptops. The Quattroporte can contain optional WLAN technology that effectively turns the car into a Wi-Fi vehicle hotspot. Still on the infotainment part, Maserati has included Harman Kardon or Bowers & Wilkins Sound Systems as a standard feature throughout the entire Quattroporte range. The audio system uses a 12-channel, 900W amplifier with 10 speakers and a high-performance subwoofer, giving impressive power and sound quality. For those who love customizing their cars, Maserati provides a wide range of personalization options through the GranLusso and GranSport trim strategy. Each trim is has a combination of a vast

range of materials for the customer to choose from, including fine woods, carbon fibre, finegrain extended leather and the new full-grain Pieno Fiore leather. GranLusso trim features luxurious Ermenegildo Zegna Silk interiors, Radica open-pore wood trim on the dashboard and leather steering wheel with wood insert. It also includes additional comfort equipment like power foot pedals, power rear and rear side sunblind, four-zone automatic climate control, heated rear seat, extended keyless entry and Soft Close Doors system. The GranSport trim on the other hand an array of exclusive elements, such as the 12-way power sport leather seats, the sport steering wheel fitted with aluminum gearshift paddles and the Inox sport foot pedals. The MY19 has embraced the Pieno Fiore natural leather, which matches the car’s quality and feel. This full-grain leather is available in black, red and tan color, either with comfort or sports seats, each with a unique stitching pattern. Maserati also offers two brand new High-Gloss interior veneers for the MY19 Quattroporte, the Carbon Fibre Twill, which adds exclusivity to the cabin by conveying the idea of a deep 3D look and the luxurious, wooden Rovere Veneer, which features fine stripes with a brushed effect under the glossy top coat. In terms of performance, Maserati has not gone small on the MY19, with the top-of-the-range Quattroporte GTS flaunting a 3.8-litre V8 engine, the perfect representation of Maserati’s tradition of extreme performance. The engine produces 390kW (530hp) at 6,800 rpm and 650 Nm peak torque from 2,000 rpm to 4,000 rpm. The peak torque figure can be automatically over-boosted to 710 Nm between 2,250 rpm and 3,500 rpm. This engine enables the Quattroporte to reach 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds and a top speed well above the 300 km/h barrier at 310 km/h. The V8 engine is boosted by two small parallel twin-scroll turbines which provide high performance while reducing inertia. The Quattroporte has two intercoolers, each mounted low and wide of the main radiators to

catch a constant supply of fresh, cool air. The engine operates in Normal, Sport and I.C.E. (Increased Control & Efficiency) driving modes. A 3.0-litre V6 engine is also available for the Quattroporte S and S Q4 versions. This engine delivers 430hp and 580 Nm peak torque between 2,250 rpm and 4,000 rpm and the maximum engine speed is 6,500 rpm. The 3.0-litre Twin Turbo V6 engine has a lot in common with the V8, including same bore dimensions, variable valve technology and very similar turbocharging, manifold and engine block technology. The engine uses high-tumble cylinder heads and four-phase variators. As on the V8, the engine uses an ECU with integral highspeed processors, which handle an array of functions in real time. The V6 also uses an innovative computer system to control the alternator, which monitors the vehicle’s electricity consumption and manages the alternator’s workload to match the need. The Maserati V6, however, features V600 architecture, instead of V900, that makes it unique. The Quattroporte S Q4 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in a remarkable 4.8 seconds while the Quattroporte S accelerates to 100 km/h in 5.0 seconds. The maximum speed is the same for both versions however; at 288 km/h. Another important similarity between the two engines that is probably worth noting is that both of them are developed by Maserati in collaboration with Ferrari. The Quattroporte Diesel engine accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 6.4 seconds, up to a maximum speed of 252 km/h. Thanks to Active Sound technology, the Quattroporte Diesel exhaust produces a characteristic Maserati sound similar to the V8 petrol engine. This is achieved through sound actuators that are fitted near the exhaust tailpipes to accentuate the engine’s most distinctive tones and modulate them accordingly, depending on the driving style. When the driver presses the Sport button on the central tunnel, the sound becomes even more resonant and utterly inspiring for a diesel – reminiscent of that of a V8 petrol engine. Quattroporte Diesel also comes with the benefits of lower emissions and lower fuel consumption, just 7.3 litres/100 km. In addition to the great engines available, all versions of the Quattroporte are fitted with the eight-speed ZF automatic transmission that ensures exceptional comfort, fast gear shifting, optimized fuel consumption and reduced noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). The MY19 Quattroporte is fitted with a redesigned gearshift lever, which flanks an inherent, dual lane shift pattern to provide shorter travel and improved operation. Using this feature, the driver has 50

the option to use the gearbox in either automatic (RND) or manual mode (M) simply by shifting the lever from right to left, while a new ‘P’ button on top sets the transmission in parking mode. The car is set to recognize a variety of conditions, such as whether it is travelling up or downhill, braking hard or driving through a corner, and selects the best gear and the gearshift style accordingly. Touching on the technology used in the MY19, Maserati has done a commendable job to stay at the top of its rivals with this Sports Sedan car. From the Keyless Entry, Soft Close Doors and Power Boot Lid features incorporated in the car to the striking double laminated windscreens, Maserati has left very little undone in designing and developing this icon of modern luxurious sports cars. The Keyless Entry feature enables the Quattroporte to open most of its doors and compartments without necessarily using the key. The double laminated windscreens which are made from acoustic glass enable make the cabin more comfortable since they filter the type of noise that the owner prefers. Technology has also been used to the driving experience of the Quattroporte feel easy and safe. The Integrated Vehicle Control (IVC) function is one of those feature meant to make driving the car safer. The feature prevents loss of car control and gives it better performance. The Maserati Stability Program (MSP) is another feature in the car that uses a wide array of sensors for early detection and intervention. If skidding is detected, the system reduces the engine’s torque output and may activate the brakes with finely varied inputs to restore the car’s stability within milliseconds. Other technological features included in this vehicle for safety and quality performance purposes include the Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Active Blind Spot Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Forward Collision Warning Plus, Advanced Brake Assist system, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Rear-view camera with dynamic lines and optional Surround view camera that uses four cameras to provide a clear 360° bird’s eye view of the car on the highresolution display. In order to further enhance high performance, The Q4 Intelligent All-Wheel Drive System has been designed offer absolute safety and genuine all-weather capability in any road conditions. The system has been designed guarantee highest traction, torque, and comfort in all road conditions. In normal driving conditions the Q4 provides 100% of the engine torque to the rear wheels, which also optimises fuel consumption and emissions. In low-grip conditions or in the case of grip loss at the rear axle, the system reacts instantly, transferring the necessary torque to the front wheels.

The chassis of the Quattroporte is another important attribute that works to meet the performance and comfort demands of Maserati buyers while maximizing safety levels. The chassis of the MY19 is 3, 17 m long on the wheelbase at its core. This enables the Maserati to offer exceptional interior comfort and exciting handling characteristics. Despite its rather large size, the flagship Maserati sedan is remarkably lightweight, weighing 1,900 kg in V8 form while the rear-wheel-drive V6 versions weigh 40 kg less. The front of the chassis is built around an aluminium casting, with a reinforced cross-strut which helps deliver outstanding rigidity in every direction, at the same time providing maximum passenger safety for the lowest weight possible. The Quattroporte MY19 has other features for maximum comfort and safety including its Standard Skyhook suspension which are basically a racing tradition at Maserati, carried on by the Quattroporte. Brembo dual cast brakes, which feature fixed-caliper braking technology, are also worth mentioning in the MY19. These brakes have an enlarged swept area, highly efficient cooling, are designed for consistent performance in sport driving situations and are oversized to meet the demands. Other features include the Electric Power Steering and Electric Parking Brake that have both improved the carâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s handling and comfort while ensuring safety for the passengers. Majid Alyousef is an award winning art and design veteran with a long experience in Arabic calligraphy and typography. His work has been featured in various galleries and institutions around the globe. MASERATI ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR ALL-NEW MODELS TO BE DEVELOPED, ELECTRIFIED AND PRODUCED IN ITALY In line with FCA’s €5 billion investment program for Italy, Maserati announces its innovation plan for production, electrification and autonomous driving technologies. With regards to production, Maserati announces plans for its lineup of new and electrified products at Modena, Cassino and Turin (Mirafiori and Grugliasco). All of Maserati’s new models will be 100 percent made in Italy and will adopt hybrid and battery electric propulsion systems capable of providing both innovation and the high performance embedded in the brand’s DNA. Maserati’s all electric models will combine traditional highly appreciated Maserati driving dynamics together with next-generation battery electric technology, offering unique driving modes, extended range and ultra-fast charging capabilities.

Hi Zak! We last interviewed you in 2012 and it was a very daring photo shoot. How was your experience? Yes, I remember that shoot! Fun times at what used to be the Hard Rock Kuwait. It was great from what I remember. The place was all ours, the photographer was a friend of mine, and I was surrounded by Rock & Pop culture memorabilia.

Now, tell us a little bit about yourself - your background, education etc.

Well, I grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana till my middle school years, that’s when I came back to Kuwait. I attended NES before joining ASK for high school and eventual graduation. Naturally, I headed back to the US for university and attended Loyola University in New Orleans, since it was more like home. But I had to switch uni due to my major in Mass Communication so I attended and graduated from Murray State University in Kentucky.

How did you get interested in music?

Very early on! Growing up in New Orleans, the birth place of Jazz & Blues, you cannot help but be surrounded by it on every street corner and every bar/café in the city. MTV has a huge part in that as well (back when MTV played music videos). Rock ‘n Roll was king back then.

We’ve been hearing a lot about you and your music and we notice you’re starting to gain a lot of attention. How does it feel?

It feels great! This is what I have been working for all these years. It has not been easy though. It takes a lot of time and effort and a lot of sacrifices have to be made. But it was my dream to become a musician just like those I saw on MTV and that’s what had to be done to achieve that.

How has the singer-songwriter scene evolved since you started?

It has grown immensely. I started to do what I do way back when no-one else was doing it. Before Instagram, before Snap Chat and before Facebook! Word of mouth was all we had back then. Now, I notice the musicians are coming out of the woodwork and it’s no longer taboo to be playing guitar. There are no longer looks of confusion or disgust when passers-by see us at an event. In fact, it’s the contrary. I am so pleased to see this happen here. We need it. We need more of it.

What does it take to be a singer/songwriter today?

Technology has changed the game. Today, the singing and the songwriting alone might not be enough. Image, social media presence and fashion play a huge role in defining artists these days. A while back, musicians actually had to have a bit of musical talent, like play an instrument or really have a defining voice to make it. Today, a few apps or programs can create so much with a few finger swipes. In my opinion, it takes a bit of both - real talent and technological help to make it today.

Beyond song craft, what other skills, technical or otherwise, does today’s singer/songwriter need to cultivate?

It’s necessary to ask the inspiring musician what his main goal is, money or critical acclaim? You have to have technical skills in today’s cut throat music business. Most young musicians I see today, spend hours and hours behind a computer or a drum loop machine or some other new gadget. Old-school musicians would spend hours and hours with their beloved instrument, trying to perfect their craft. It’s more intimate that way. But the world is changing, whether you like it or not, and that’s why you need a bit of both. You need technical skills but also, to be the real deal, with real talent to back it up if the computers shut down.

What kind of music do you listen to?

Honestly, nowadays I don’t listen to much! I do enjoy the radio because it gives me a quick idea of what’s hip in today’s music scene, from different new artists to different styles of music. The market is so over saturated with new sounds and artists, it’s hard to keep up. But, I’m a Rock ‘n Roller at heart, so that’s my go-to feel good vibe.

What is your day-to-day life like these days?

Very busy and hectic, but fun! In order to be recognized and hopefully loved for your craft, you’ve got to work, work, work! Most days I’m gigging or playing a show anywhere they let me. Hence why most people say to me: ‘I’ve seen you somewhere, right?’

When you sing in your mind, what do you hear?

I usually close my eyes certain times while singing and belting out loud. It varies from song to song. Some songs I really live each word that is sung. Others, I concentrate on certain notes that to me, must be hit just right to get maximum adoration. Some notes are really hard to hit!

Who are your musical inspirations?

Anyone who knows me knows I’m the biggest Bon Jovi fan. Jon Bon Jovi has changed my life with his music and as I delved more into his personal life, he changed me even more by being the great humanitarian and philanthropist he is. Richie Sambora, the Bon Jovi guitarist was one of the main reasons I picked up a guitar. I never thought I could be Jon, leading a rock band, but I thought, I can definitely be a Richie! Obviously there are many, many other inspirations like Def Leppard, Guns N’ Rose’s and Pearl Jam. You can tell I grew up with Rock ‘n’ Roll in my veins.

If you could perform anywhere in the world, where would it be? I hear Coachella is pretty nice!

Do you prefer playing bigger venues or smaller, more intimate ones? That’s a good question. I have to say, both. Being from here, we don’t have that many big venues to play, so mostly I’m known for my café gigs and more intimate shows. I love them. I get to meet the fans one-on-one; have a real conversation with them, shake their hands and take selfies all night long. But I won’t lie to you, nothing beats the adrenaline feeling of performing to thousands and thousands of screaming fans.

You have just released your new single, how does it feel? What inspired the song? Yes, Nvr Let M3 Go! I’m so excited about this one. It’s a complete departure, musically and lyrically from what I’m known for, but that’s what I love about the song. Every artist has to push his own boundaries and not stay in his comfort zone too long. This song is a collaboration with a young, talented Kuwaiti rapper, EL3MENT. The boy’s got flow and his vibe is contagious. You all will love this one! Nvr Let M3 Go was written probably three years ago. I was very influenced by the emerging Synth and EDM sound in music today and wanted to write something very radio friendly. I tried many times to record it unsuccessfully, but the third time was the charm I think.

What’s your songwriting process? I usually come up with a musical ‘hook’ first, a chorus so to speak. Then I try to put lyrics to it once I believe the music is ready. My process is more organic though. I like things to flow naturally and not force myself to sit down and finish the song. If it comes, it comes. If it doesn’t, leave it for another time.

Do you have any standout/strange/funny gig moments? Performing outdoors, you're always open to the unknown. Not so much funny, but recently I was performing for a VIP dinner event outdoors on a huge balcony on the 14th floor of a high rise building. Needless to say, the wind was not kind to us. Mid-way through the show, the wind picked up and there was flying gourmet food everywhere! People dressed up in their finest clothes ended up leaving with tiramisu all over them.

What are you working on now and where do you feel your music is headed? Right now, I am finalizing my second full length album. Recording, mixing and mastering a 10-track album is quite hard work, especially here where the industry is still in its infancy. Yes, we have studios, but not all studios here are familiar with Westernized music. So finding the right people to work with is essential, and hard to find locally. Luckily, I found amazing people to work with, it just takes longer than usual to get all related parties in one place at the same time. To speak frankly, the internet opened up so many possibilities. I feel my music and the production elements I am investing in are targeting a worldwide, international audience. Nowadays, it's doable to target that with the help of the internet. So I’m going worldwide!

Everybody needs time out. What do you do in your free time? I’m a homey kind of person. If I’m not gigging or playing at an event somewhere, you’ll probably catch me at home, Netflix and Chilling.

What advice would you give to an aspiring singer-songwriter? Keep trying! I have been rejected so many times. I almost contemplated quitting this whole music thing and just working at a bank or something. So keep practicing and keep perfecting your skill no matter what it is, and always try to perform infront of people who don’t know who you are. Friends and family can be biased, they will love whatever you do. But the general public will let you know if you're on the right course, or far from it.

So it finally came, the weekend we have all been waiting for. This time it was a test drive with the amazing Porsche Cayman GTS; everyone was so eager for a chance to feel the experience in this magnificent beast of a car. Simply put, we were all thrilled that the chance was finally here, being the type of people who are always immensely captivated by every Porsche vehicle. Once again, the Porsche Centre Kuwait, Behbehani Motors Company, came through; only today, it was the 718 Cayman GTS model. This is one of those sports cars that oozes both class and style combined with a performance at par with very few ever built. The company was generous enough to give us four days with this elegant beast. We had the opportunity to take the car out for a test drive and write about the experience. First, we made the trip around the Gulf Road and then around the Salmiya area, and it was nothing short from excellent. Ayumi AlMutawa, our colleague, was very smitten and wanted to try this amazing beast the next day. Our photography team, headed by Hamad AlAinati took the opportunity to capture the beautiful experience. On this material day, Ayumi started her day with the car, making the first stop at Boulevard mall to meet some friends at the café. From there, she took it for a morning cruise downtown through the gulf road, feeling the sunset before coming to a rest along the beachfront.

Exterior Design The first mark of elegance was the shiny ‘Graphite blue’ trim on the chassis with its magnificent reflection in the morning sun, which made a pleasant sight to behold on the streets from the oceanfront. This trendy trim is the go-to color to complement the Porsche 718 Cayman GTS sporty outlook, especially in the streets of Kuwait. Also available for the test drive was the silver color. Other colors available for the 718 GTS model include the lava range, chalk, Miami blue, carmine red, the GT silver metallic, grey metallic, blue metallic, racing metallic as well as the traditional white black and red trims in case you may want to try out. The sporty chassis design in the 718 Cayman GTS model is also an improvement from the immediate predecessors. The new chassis features a completely retuned compact model that allows for an even dynamic cornering capability while retaining comfort behind the wheel at the same time. This is made possible with the combination of the Porsche Stability Management (PSM), the reinforced break as well as the multi-collision braking system. The introduction of 72

an optional 718 Cayman S PASM sports suspension with a 20mm lower ride height option also makes the GTS stand out among sports cars of the same design when it comes to maneuverability. Visually, the GTS stands out from the other 718 models thanks to the new Sport Design front apron. As is typical for GTS models, the front light modules and the Bi-Xenon headlights are black-tinted. At the rear of the vehicle, the tinted tail lights, black logos, black rear apron and centrally positioned black sports tailpipes of the standard sports exhaust system give the GTS its unique appearance. Black GTS logos on the doors and 20-inch wheels painted in black complete the side view. This seamless and comprehensive design simply oozes class on the move. Another eye-catching safety feature is the extended assistance systems at the drivers’ disposal. The car, for instance, could automatically break albeit moderately at the exceeding of a preset speed, slowing the car automatically when on a downhill run. The 718 Cayman GTS is further equipped with a warning assistant that monitors traffic with sensors fitted on the mirrors and which alerts the driver of traffic approaching on a blindspot. With such instruments at the driver’s disposal at all times, safety standards are thus guaranteed with this new model

Interior Design The interior of the 718 Cayman GTS is totally on another level altogether when it comes to class and luxury altogether. The GTS models feature Sports seats Plus with Alcantara seat centres. The steering wheel rim, shift lever and armrest are also covered with Alcantara, as is the roof lining in the 718 Cayman GTS. This complements the classy feel and texture as well as the already established luxurious interior of the previous models.

Furthermore, the GTS model boasts of a new Porsche Communication Management system as an additional improvement from the previous models. This new feature includes support for infotainment and connectivity to allow the user to interact more efficiently without interruptions while driving. The components of this system include a mobile preparation to allow for mobile communication and connectivity during a ride. Additionally, it boasts of a range of audio interfaces and a 150-watt audio power Sound Package in a redesigned panel, which enhances the driving experience both for the driver and their passenger â&#x20AC;&#x201D; riding in such a highly interactive and entertaining environment is a plus when it comes to supplementing the luxury inside the car. Even without USB ports as common in most cars of the same type, the GTS model has a connect module with wireless connectivity. Voice control is also availed in the navigational module for interested buyers, thus making it easy to enter destinations when driving. Online functionality is also enabled with the connect plus module, enabling WI-FI and internet access. Thus, journeys seem short even when driving over extensive periods. Moreover, customers would feel comfortable the moment they resume a ride, giving them an experience of a lifetime.

Engine and Performance After a careful examination of the external and internal features of the 718 Cayman GTS, it was time to power this baby up and check out its capabilities. Perhaps the greatest improvement in the new Porsche Cayman 718 GTS is the engine. The powerful rev when powered up and even when on idle hints at a better engine capacity as compared to the predecessors. Just so you get a clue about the 718 Cayman GTS new performance statistics, it is worth noting that this lean sporting machine boasts of a The 2.5-litre, four-cylinder turbo flat engine with a redeveloped intake

duct and optimised turbocharger now delivers 269 kW (365 hp). Fuel economy is well catered for with the flat engine consuming around 9.0â&#x20AC;&#x201C;8.2 litres per 100 Kilometers. This is very impressive considering the high reliability of the gentle monster as soon as it hits the tarmac.

The new 718 Cayman GTS engine also boasts of increased torque, delivering up to 420 Nm to the crankshaft at engine speeds ranging from 1,900 and 5,500 rpm. This extra gain would definitely be felt in this new car as it allows the driver to enjoy a better torque at all speeds, requiring less effort on their part to control the car. The increase in performance is made possible thanks to a redeveloped intake duct with greater volume as well as an optimised turbocharger with variable turbine geometry (VTG) and increased boost pressure. Instead of a maximum boost pressure of 1.1 bar as seen in the 718 S, the optimised single turbocharger with VTG and a larger compressor pushes the air into the combustion chambers with a pressure of up to 1.3 bar. This means that the high torque plateau begins even at a low engine speed of 1,900 rpm and remains at the maximum value all the way to 5,000 or 5,500 rpm. During the test drive, the 718 Cayman GTS was also surprisingly fast when it comes to turbocharging reaction times as compared to the previous models of the 718 Cayman. The variable turbo geometry (VTG) in the powerful 718 Cayman GTS engine allows for optimum efficiency in use through adjustable vanes that control exhaust gas steam. This was made possible by the focus on achieving a higher level of engine responsiveness by the manufacturers in tuning the turbocharging process. The vehicle is able to attain such effectiveness with the alternation of two driving throttles in the ignition timing, the Sport and Sport Plus modes. Alternating these two allows the driver to attain maximum torque with ultimate efficiency. Another noticeable feature in the 718 Cayman GTS is the Dynamic www.cpmagazine.net

Boost function. This new function allows the driver to maintain the throttle even when the pedal is released, which allows the driver to apply quick throttle alternations with no decrease in the engine response, as was noticed in the test drives both by Ayumi and me. In addition to the Dynamic Boost function, one will notice that the 718 Cayman GTS is equipped with a Sport Response Button comparable to that of the previous 911 models. This is combined with a Sport Chrono Package with the PDK gearbox located in the middle of the program switch. Additionally, there is a Sport Plus mode, which is used to initiate shifts in the gear to allow for better performance in action. Another interesting development with the model is that the gear in the 718 Cayman GTS is a manual six-speed transmission system as a standard. However, Porsche Centre Kuwait, Behbehani Motors Company, made a point to inform us that there was an option for a seven-speed transmission gear. Surprisingly, the sports beast was found to be excellent with fuel efficiency, even incorporating a system that shuts off the engine as the car coasts to a stop. As far as the engine optimization packages go, it turns out that the 718 Cayman GTS modelsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; developers were keen to enhance its sporting properties to no limits. On the dashboard is installed a program switch with several optional choices. Among the instruments cluster menu available for the driver is the auto start and stop functions, a Sport Response button in the program switch for cars with PDK gearboxes for overtaking maneuvers. Also, there is a feature for a rear spoiler to counter challengers behind the car in a race. The Sport Chrono Package that comes as an option further pushes the racing potentials of this elegant masterpiece of a car.

Verdict The 718 Cayman GTS is no doubt one of the most formidable among the sports cars of the year. This magnificent racing beauty combines both power, elegance, and safety to make any sports car lover's dream come true. From the super comfortable interior, the elegant beauty and quality of the exterior, and the excellent performance parameters incorporated in designing as well as the efficiency and sporting capabilities, this car oozes pure class and luxury like no other. The customization options available with this model as well as the efficiency it affords the user again proves just how much the Porsche company cares for its customers as well as its mastery of the client needs as it has always done over the years, and which make it the go-to company when it comes to luxury sport cars.

They say that the cars we drive say a lot about us, and nothing says rich and cool louder than a Ferrari. There is really no need to get into details about the thousand-and-one reasons why a Ferrari should be your ultimate dream car. Last week, as usual, we had a chance to test drive a car; only this time it was not just any other car but a Ferrari! Unlike other test drives, this one was unique since the Ferrari that our friends from Kuwait Automobile & Trading Co. had invited us to test was pre-owned.
